This year, the life of World War I veteran Theo Bailey will be celebrated. Mr. Bailey enlisted with the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion in 1915. He served as a battalion bomber, becoming promoted to Corporal. He and his battalion fought in Belgium and France in the battles of Ypres, Salient and the Somme, eventually participating in the Battle of Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917. In May, Theo was injured by shrapnel, returning to Canada on a hospital ship with a long recovery ahead. He was discharged from the military in 1918. Theo Bailey became a distinguished, popular and respected Camrosian. He was a pharmacist, drug store owner, Royal Canadian Legion president, town councillor, Rotary Club president, postmaster, accomplished athlete, hockey referee, Chamber of Commerce member and was always active in his church. He helped raise an impressive amount of money for the first swimming pool in Camrose. Theo is affectionately remembered for his faithful service to the community. For many, many years, he organized the local November 11th Remembrance Day service. For more details about this year’s Founders Day festival, turn to pages 12, 17 and 36 of this issue.

Sorenson and Kelly off and running in Battle River-Crowfoot By Dan Jensen

Gary Kelly from the Green Party of Canada and Kevin Sorenson from the Conservative Party of Canada will be seeking election as member of parliament for Battle RiverCrowfoot in the Oct. 19 federal election. Kelly is a Tofield resident who, for the past 10 years, has worked for Ecolab, a company that focuses on water, hygiene and energy technologies. As a territory manager, he is responsible for the cleanliness and sanitation concerns of over 100 restaurants, hospitals, care homes and hotels from Sherwood Park to Consort. Kelly is focused on the idea of “less politics and more democracy.” “(He) is committed to putting the interests and concerns of constituents above partisan games,” states his biography on the Green Party of Canada website. “(His) decision to run for the Green Party of Canada was mainly because of their grassroots approach to politics, which puts constituents first – prohibiting whipped votes and back room deals.” Kelly believes it is important to invest in jobs centred on knowledge, skills and sustainable resource development, and wants to restore Canada’s role as a leader in peacekeeping, education and environmental stewardship. Kelly and his wife, Sharri, have three children, Conner, Graeme and Teagan. Sorenson was first elected to the House of Commons in 2000. He was re-elected in the 2004 federal election with 80.21 per cent of the vote, and again in 2006, 2008 and 2011 with 82.5, 82 and 84 per cent of the vote respectively. Following the 2006 election, Sorenson was elected chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development. He was appointed as a Member of the Sub-Committee on International Human Rights. After the 2008 federal election he was elected as chair of the House of Commons Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan, and then chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. He was appointed to the Cabinet on July 15, 2013, as Minister of State (Finance) and became a Member of the Queen’s Privy Council. Kevin, his wife Darlene, and their children, Kristen and Ryan, still reside on a farm within a few miles of the Sorenson family farm at Killam, where his father and mother currently reside and his grandfather began farming a century ago. The Conservative Party of Canada won 167 seats in the 2011 election to form a majority government. The NDP finished with 102 seats, the Liberals with 34, the Bloc Quebecois with four and the Green Party with one.

WORK WRAPPING UP ON SANITARY TRUNK LINE

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The last manhole has been installed on the new sanitary trunk line running between 47 and 44 Avenue, through Jubilee Park. The new line completes the final phase of this year’s sanitary sewer upgrade, which increases capacity for future development. The contractors will be continuing with the landscaping construction within the park over the remainder of the summer.

National Pistol Championship returning to Camrose By Dan Jensen

The Canadian National Pistol Championships are returning to Camrose. The 10 metre men’s and women’s Air Pistol competition will be held at the Camrose Recreation Centre from Aug. 21 to 24, followed by the 25 metre pistol event at the Camrose Shooting Sports Association outdoor range from Aug. 24 to 27. The championships will be hosted by the Alberta Handgun Association. “Last year we made the decision to come to Camrose and because of the facility, the type of facility that is present, and the welcoming nature of that (Camrose Shooting Sports Association) organization and the welcoming nature of the indoor facility, we decided to come again in 2015,” said Alberta Handgun Association treasurer and past president Bernie Harrison. “We did have the option of bidding the competition at the new Pan American

range in Toronto. Instead of Toronto we chose Camrose. We felt it was better for our shooters and better for the competition.” The Canadian National Pistol Championships serves as the selection competition for the Shooting Federation of Canada’s National Pistol Team. Scores at the Canadian championships are recognized as valid scores to place competitors on Canada’s national team. “The national team is the first step towards qualifying for Canada’s Olympic team,” said Harrison. “If there are any competitive shooters in Canada who want to make the Olympic team they have to come through this competition first.” The competition differs from many other shooting events in that the targets are electronic. “There is no paper in the target,” explained Harrison. “Usually when we think of a target we think

of a piece of paper with circles and lines. You won’t find that on our targets. On our targets there will be a white sheet and a black centre. When the pellet passes through any part of the target it makes a noise and, like seismic equipment, the electronics calculate where the pellet hit the paper, puts that onto an electronic target, and sends that information back to the competitor, who has a monitor. Usually when people compete in competitions all the spectators are watching the person. In our competition, because the target is 10 metres away, nobody can see it. We project on the wall the images of the targets. It is quite interesting that the competitors are shooting at the target here, but everybody is looking over there at the screen on the wall. For new people coming in they wonder how come nobody is watching the athletes.” The Camrose Shooting

Sports Association’s outdoor range is fully safety certified with covered firing points and safety berms. Indoor events will be held in one of the open hockey arenas. None of the air pistols that will be used in the championships qualify under the firearms act as a firearm. “They basically qualify as non firearms – toys you can purchase if you are 18,” said Harrison. All competitors at the championships must present proof of Shooting Federation of Canada membership that provides them insurance liability coverage. Additionally, the event is covered by the National Firearms Association (NFA) for additional event liability. The competition is governed by International Shooting Sports Federation rules and safety regulations, as well as Shooting Federation of Canada regulations. Safety of the

event is one of the primary considerations, along with liability coverage. “The rules do not allow any holsters, do not allow blue jeans, do not allow any shirts with logos,” said Harrison. “Anything that is considered camouflage or military is banned from the range.” The Canadian National Pistol Championships have been held annually in Canada for the past 60 years. Alberta has been the primary location since 1978, although some championships have been held in eastern Canada. The event was held at the Edmonton Strathcona Outdoor Range from 1978 to 2006 until that option was no longer available with the range shutting down. The championships moved to Calgary and were hosted there for five years until the Calgary Police Service took over the outdoor range and it was no longer available to the public.

CFCW moves to 840 on dial By Dan Jensen

If you tried to dial into CFCW last week, but ended up with nothing but static, don’t worry – it hasn’t gone off the air. The radio station “flipped” AM dial positions from 790 to 840 Aug. 1. “The 790 AM signal has deteriorated over the years,” said CFCW program direc-

tor Jackie Rae Greening in a media release. “The 840 AM dial position will be much clearer: a better signal able to serve our thousands of listeners throughout north/ central Alberta.” CFCW first hit the airwaves on Nov. 2, 1954, serving Camrose and Wetaskiwin (the “CW” of CFCW) as a small 250 watt station.

Citori 725 Sporting

Fresh Cabbage is ready! Creamy Thai Cabbage Salad

Balance. Form. Excellence. The new Citori 725 is the evolution of John M. Browning’s legendary B25 Superposed, now with the modern performance advantage of a Low-Profile receiver. The new 725 receiver is significantly lower than other Citori 12-gauge receivers, yet the 725 shares the renowned durability of generations of Citori over and unders with the same rugged full-width hinge pin and tapered locking bolt design. With a 725, you get the “one with the gun” feeling you want, with the long-lasting durability you expect from a Browning over and under. And the features don’t stop there. The 725 showcases an all-new Mechanical Trigger (FireLite) that offers unmatched feel and lighter pull weights than ever before. Inflex Technology has also been added to make shooting more comfortable. And the new Invector-DS choke system moves to a new level of performance. Experience the benefits these improvements can do for your shooting with a new Citori 725.

Bridget

Vinesation Owner

Unique to the 725 Field model: • Signature 725 rounded forearm with subtle palm rest is both comfortable and stylish. • Ivory front and mid-bead sights for excellent target acquisition. • Three Invector-DS extend choke tubes (Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder). • Beautiful Grade II/III Walnut. • Invector-DS choke tubes are longer than traditional chokes, allowing for a consistent barrel taper at the muzzle. The double seal keeps fouling gasses out of the threads between the choke tube and the barrel. • The Fire Lite Mechanical Trigger system design features reduced takeup, a crisp break and shorter over-travel, resulting in a high-performance trigger that doesn’t require inertia to reset. • Inflex recoil pad absorbs and deflects recoil away from the shooter’s cheek, allowing you to shoot comfortably for longer periods of time. • Gold accented engraving.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Mirrored back When I was a little girl growing up in Camrose, the jewel now called Mirror Lake was “the dam” – dark dirty water that accumulated when Stony Creek was dammed up. I am old enough to remember when the Town and then the City of Camrose made decisions to keep the area around Stony Creek and “the dam” as park. This was not always an easy sell. It took some imagination to visualize anything other than murky water and scruffy brush in the centre of town. It took vision and persistence to convince others that intangibles like “nature” and “park” were worth more to the municipality than selling the land for “development.” ***

I thought of all that as I read an article about the impact of being in nature. I have noticed for a long time that if I go for even a short walk outside I feel better. If my walk includes some time in a natural environment, I feel even better. Turns out that’s true for most people. The article I read says that, aside from the physical benefits of fresh air and greenery, being in nature has psychological benefits. A growing body of research tells us that… …walking in nature decreases harmful “mental rumination” – that is, going over and over bad feelings and experiences from the past (I had to look it up!) – which is a risk factor for depression… …kids who go to schools with more greenery perform better on tests that require the ability to think… …seeing images of greenery helps performance on challenging cognitive tasks. In short, research proves what some people have known their whole lives – being in nature helps you feel better emotionally and helps you think better. ***

Back to Camrose and the jewel that is Mirror Lake. How fortunate that – long before it was fashionable – some visionary councillors and administrators thought it important to keep that area for park, and then to beautify it. (They probably didn’t know they were helping us cognitively and psychologically too!) I remember as the area was kept somewhat natural but with walking trails and other enhancements. Gradually, year by year, the trails were extended, creating more and more places where people could enjoy walking (or running or biking or skiing). I also remember when the first swans arrived – named “Hal” and “Faxie” because they were a gift from Halifax. What an enhancement they were to what by then was Mirror Lake.

Letters to the Editor Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only the name of writer and the city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. The plight of the Camrose Ski Jump

I applaud the City of Camrose for organizing the meeting held July 29 to discuss the fate of the ski scaffold. The scaffold was erected in 1989 to accommodate the Nordic Combined Event of the Provincial Winter Games. This was the third scaffold built as the first one burned down and the second structure was substandard and needed to be upgraded in order to hold the winter games in Camrose. I was pleased to see a variety of residents at the meeting, some with a passion for ski jumping and some with little or no connection to ski jumping. The opinions as to the future plans for the ski jump were varied; the old guard of ski members or jumpers were,

of course, for maintaining the status quo with safety and maintenance being number one priority. At this time, costs are unknown or roughly estimated. Why should we spend money on a facility that is no longer used? For those people who feel history has value, the answer is obvious. What is Camrose known for historically? A centre with both railways? A city with a generous amount of walking trails? A city with Mirror Lake strategically located in the centre of a beautiful place to live? A well planned city mainly dependent on agriculture? The “Rose City” of Alberta? I would suggest we are also known as having a strong Nordic base, with a history of a successful skiing background. As history tells us, the first immigrants to the Camrose area were of Scandinavian descsent, hence the cabin of Ole Bakken at the museum. Along with their arrival, they brought the sport or mode of travel over the snow on long boards, or skis. Surely this is history in the making. Camrose was one of a handful of centres with a ski jump and a very active Nordic Ski Club. Did you know that in the 1930s and 1940s the Camrose Ski Club supplied the majority of ski jumpers that made

the Banff Winter Carnival the success it was for many years? We were well known for producing Nordic skiers of Olympic calibre. I feel we should be proud of this accomplishment and have it recorded for future generations. I think the ski jump should be preserved so that it can become synonymous to the city of Camrose, as the Pysanka is to Vegreville, the Pierogi to Glendon or the Oil Derricks to Drayton Valley. If you look on the Alberta Tourism site on the internet, there are many cities, towns and villages that have a significant monument erected to honour their historic achievements. What better way than to use an existing structure to commemorate our historic accomplishments? There are many ways to improve and utilize the existing ski jump. Some good ideas were voiced at the meeting. One in particular, I believe, has merit. Incorporate a spiral staircase in the structure to a substantial observation platform over the top of the scaffold. This would be a focal point for the various walking trails in the valley. I would hope that City council will deliberate carefully and not rush to a decision that is not reversible. Bob Hurlburt, Camrose

***

The article I read pointed out something else. If a natural scene which delights us has litter – even a small amount – that greatly reduces the positive impact of being in nature. In experiments, even a small amount of litter triggered strong and consistent reduction in the “restorativeness” of the scene. It made the research participants feel “unhappy and less calm.” Litter is not just bad for the environment; it’s bad for us psychologically too. ***

I know people from the East country who choose to come to Camrose – or stop in Camrose on their way to Edmonton – specifically because they like heading west to that place on Highway 13 where the view of Mirror Lake opens up. If it happens to be at sunset, that’s even better. Every time I’m driving west towards that place, I can feel my spirits lift. And every time I have that moment, I say a mental “thank you” to the far-seeing people who looked at what was then a rather ugly scene and could see the beauty. ***

Perhaps when we perceive beauty, it is mirrored back to us. May we all have those kind of eyes. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

Cindy Elliott, Co-owner Elliott’s Auto Care

The Elliotts know something about making long-term connections. Cindy and Eric were married in 1980. That’s a long-term connection. It’s also remarkable that they’ve had some of the same customers since they started their first automotive repair business in 1986. They believe in the power of communication. You don’t stay together for almost 40 years without talking to each other and you can’t keep a customer that long without some dialogue. When they have a long-time customer they really get to know their vehicle and its quirks. If they see something that might be a problem down the road, they talk about it. Often, it goes something like this: “Your ______ (fill in the blank) looks like it’s starting to go. But we dont have to replace it now. Maybe in six months we should take another look and then decide if a new one is needed.” That’s nice. No need to part with money right now if you don’t have to. Other shops might be real quick in getting the new part ordered. Not Eric and Cindy. They like to do the work when it’s prudent because that’s how they would want to be treated, with respect, as a person, not as a line on a financial statement. If you aren’t afraid of commitment, then Elliott’s Auto Care is your best choice for a long-term relationship with your vehicle’s mechanical team.

Hearing Sense

We rely on our sense of hearing to communicate and if it’s compromised in any way, so is our quality of life. With over 19 years of experience as a Hearing Aid Practitioner, Gina Shiels, owner of Hearing Sense, sees firsthand the daily struggle that goes with hearing loss. “Hearing loss is a natural part of getting older, and is more common than you think,” notes Gina. Noise levels have increased everywhere. From hair dryers to leaf blowers, lawnmowers, snowmobiles, iPods®, surround sound speakers and more, we constantly expose our ears to damaging levels of noise. And that’s just at home. Our work environments are becoming increasingly loud as well. I see a lot of farmers, construction workers and people from the oil industry, whose hearing has been damaged by the equipment they use. In fact, more than 20% of all people with hearing challenges today are still in the workforce.” “Hearing Aid technology has vastly improved over the years, including the addition of Bluetooth compatible hearing aids. Modern designs are often hard to detect so most people don’t even know you are wearing hearing aids. There are more options than ever before,” says Gina. We pride ourselves on customer service. Every person is unique and we want to design a solution that works for each of them.” Suffering with hearing loss is a thing of the past. Smokies, S’mores and more

Camping is a funny thing. We take our comfiest but slightly ratty clothing, pack up mostly prepackaged, questionably healthy foods and meats, drive for several hours, sleep in much smaller quarters than at home, with children who often aren’t used to having others in their sleeping space, and pay money to stay when we are already paying for a perfectly good home. When I recently suggested a camping trip, my husband looked at me in horror. Did I not remember the last time, just in May? The time that we woke up two of our children when we came to bed, and then we all proceeded to take turns waking each other up, finally falling into an exhausted sleep somewhere between 2 and 3 in the morning? After I had begged him to please just drive us home? Ummm, yes, I did remember. But I reasoned that we had learned things from that trip. Unzip jackets before entering the camper van with sleeping children, no flashlights even if they are on red mode, no crinkling chip bags may enter. Besides, if we didn’t do things that were painful and exhausting more than once, nobody in the world would have a sibling, right? Since then, we have had several successful camps this summer, especially once we started setting up a tent to divide our family up. Now our four-year-old just crawls right in when he’s tired! There are times in life when it is best to go into the experience with low expectations, and camping is one of those times. We have learned not to expect perfection. The weather may not be perfect, there may be bugs and I can guarantee that the children will cry and whine periodically. But by taking our little ones camping, we’re teaching them to enjoy some of life’s simple pleasures and role-modelling the importance of being outdoors. We are teaching them resiliency, how to be flexible and adapt to new surroundings. There are always new discoveries to be made and bonding time to be had. Camping can be truly enchanting: listening to the epically Canadian call of a loon across a deep lake, dipping a paddle into calm waters, spending hours building the perfect sand castle, biking from one playground to the next, listening to your children giggling to each other as they snuggle into their sleeping bags. If I anticipate that it may be frustrating to get our little ones off to bed in the evening, and understand that I may not get a chance to sit down with a good book, I’m much more likely to enjoy myself. We have determined that our children should sleep separately, if possible, to mimic their natural habitat at home. We are learning how to prevent repeat visits from our children while we sit by the campfire; problems range from “he won’t stop talking to me,” to “I don’t want this extra pillow on my bed,” to “actually, I don’t think I’m tired after all.” Our baby goes to sleep first, and we wait until our older two are good and ready, and then we go to sleep at the same time, one parent and one child per camping unit. The criteria for a good camp site is now based largely on proximity to the playground. I would call us dedicated campers: otherwise, we would put a hold on camping until our youngest was five years old. But it’s important to me to get out there, away from mundane household chores and to see how much fun a child can have with a pile of sticks, even if I am awakened earlier than usual by my excited campers or in the night by a pesky mosquito. We’ve also been discovering the joys of s’mores. We roasted marshmallows in my childhood (I love telling my children stories about my childhood; once my daughter looked at me and said, “Is this my childhood?”), but I had never properly experimented with adding in gooey chocolate goodness until this year. Caramel as well as mint chocolate bars are a big hit. Somehow, I think it’s a return to the simpler way of life that we’re craving. We get to see new landscapes and creatures, breathe in fresh air, put some sand in our toes (and other places), and sun on our shoulders. Now those are some good expectations.

The 2015 Camrose Founders Days celebration is just days away. “We are going to have a First World War theme,” said Camrose Founders Days committee coordinator Janine Carroll. “We want to pay tribute to the men of Camrose and area who died in what was known as The Great War and whose names are listed on the Legion cenotaph, as well as show how the people of the community contributed to the war cause.” Activities will get underway at 10 and 10:30 a.m. Aug. 14 with tours of the new City Hall, followed at 11 a.m. with a hospitality tea at Messiah Lutheran Church and at 11:30 a.m. with a downtown promenade. “Shake out your Klondike clothes, don a fancy hat and join in,” said Carroll. “It’s fun for all ages and you could win one of two $50 bills.” The 12th annual Founders Days ceremony and reception featuring refreshments from the Lefse House and displays from the First and Second World Wars will be held at the Bailey Theatre from 1 to 3 p.m. An Old Sparling Historical Walk will start at Coldwell Banker at 3 p.m. “The walk is a chance to hear about some of the early Camrose families who

John Person will be leading a graveyard tour during Founders Days.

lived in selected homes, as well as about early pioneer architecture,” said Carroll. A ghost walk will start at 7 p.m. with buses leaving from the Camrose Regional Exhibition. Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will join the happenings Aug. 15 with a Firebox Festival and Garden Party (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) that includes fun children’s activities, the Station Swing Band and the Mirror Lake Express, which will be providing free rides throughout the day. The Railway Station tea room will serve a light lunch and desserts, while

the White Elephant Gift Shop will be stocked with unique items, some of them antiques. A Family Culture Craze at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum at the same time (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) will feature displays by the Camrose Horticultural Society and Camrose Genealogical Society, blacksmith demonstrations, and live entertainment. The ATCO Energy Education Mobile will teach kids about energy resources and how to use our resources wisely. “This free and interactive one-of-a-kind mobile

has been travelling across Alberta to schools and communities since 2010 and it’s Camrose’s turn,” said Carroll. “It features four interactive learning stations, including a touch screen computer game on Alberta’s energy landscape and a newly added “Spin to Win” energy efficiency challenge that tests visitors on their energy smarts to win prizes.” About Time Productions will be conducting story telling for ages three to eight from 10 to 11 a.m., theatre games and storytelling for ages nine to 13 from 11 a.m. to noon, and

improv games and theatre movement for ages 14 to 18 from 1 to 2 p.m. John Person will lead a graveyard tour at the Valleyview Cemetery starting at 7 p.m. You’ll see the hundreds of veteran crosses as the Legion, along with other service clubs, recognize their deceased members. “Always entertaining and informative, John creates one of the most interesting events of the weekend,” said Carroll. Due to a conflicting schedule, the customary theatrical performance at the Bailey Theatre will not be held this year. A church service will be held in the 1908 St. Dunstan’s Church (originally called Holy Angels and All Saints’ Church) at Camrose and District Centennial Museum at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16. Officiating minister Rev. Ray Olsen will reflect upon a world at war. Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will be holding garden tours at 10 a.m. The final event of the weekend is the Royal Canadian Legion Decoration Day service. Join members of the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion at Valleyview Cemetery at 1 p.m. to recognize and honour those who served in the military, protecting our community and country.

Theo Bailey to be remembered at Founders Days By Dan Jensen The life of Theo Bailey will be celebrated at the 2015 version of Camrose Founders Days Aug. 14 to 16. “We’ve decided to choose Theo as this year’s founder,” said Camrose Founders Days coordinator Janine Carroll. “We thought that given his involvement with the First World War (this year’s Founders Days theme) that he would be the perfect choice.” Theo Bailey was born in Rosemont, Ontario, on Jan. 3, 1896, as the youngest child in a family of 10 boys and two girls. In 1913 he arrived in Camrose to start a pharmacy apprenticeship with the S.E. Large Drugstore, which years later became Camrose Drug. After the outbreak of the First World War he enlisted in the 51st battalion of the Canadian army at Calgary in November, 1915. He was transferred to Edmonton during the winter months, and in April of 1916 sailed for England. He spent some time at Bramshott Camp and became a battalion bomber. He was promoted to the rank of corporal, and in due course moved with his

battalion to Belgium in the salient at Ypres. Bailey’s battalion attacked Hill 60 on June 10, 1916, and remained in that area until September, 1916. It then moved to the Somme in France, and on September 21 made a successful attack on the village and surrounding territory of Courcelette. From there it moved to the Souchez Sector where the battle of Vimy took place on April 9, 1917. On May 3, 1917, at a town called Fresnois, he was wounded by overhead shrapnel. After recovering in the general infirmary at Leeds, England, Bailey came back to Canada on a pleasure cruiser which had been converted to a hospital ship.

He eventually ended up at the Soldiers Hospital in Edmonton, and spent some time there before being discharged on June 14, 1918. Bailey returned to Camrose and married Isabella (Babe) Stuart in 1924. Following his graduation from the University of Alberta with a pharmacy degree in 1926 he served as Camrose postmaster for 17 years. He then returned to pharmacy in 1943 when he and Babe, his wife, opened Bailey Drug. Apprentices under him included Bob Dowling, Stu Bailey, his son, and Elmer Bergh. Bailey supported the community in many ways. Upon his discharge he joined the Great War Veterans’

Association, which later became the Royal Canadian Legion. “I have the greatest admiration for my comrades who served their country in a time of need and acquitted themselves in manners that has no equal; in an attack you were not alone,” he wrote. “The man on your right was there and the man on your left was there, unless they were wounded. A fine body of men. And even though that happened many years ago, in recollecting the events, I sometimes find a teardimmed eye. They gave their all, they paid the supreme sacrifice. God bless them.” Bailey served nine years as Legion president, and held virtually every Legion office. In his words, “I have never regretted being a member of the Camrose Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.” Bailey also served as a member of Town council for 12 years, president of the Rotary Club of Camrose for two consecutive terms, member of the United Church (he sang with the choir), and chair of the organization that raised $42,000 for the first Camrose swimming pool.

Bailey organized the first district hockey tournament in Camrose in the early 1940s, as well as the first minor hockey for youngsters under the age of 12. He also refereed senior hockey in central Alberta for many years. He provided veterinary supplies, service and advice to countless farmers and ranchers during his business life, before the advent of present day veterinary clinics. He is probably remembered most for his faithful service to the community in organizing the Remembrance Day observance each Nov. 11, and for the dignity and importance that he transmitted to the community for this day. Bailey was a great sportsman and a gardener, and especially enjoyed trout fishing on Findlay River, in B.C., where he and his wife holidayed for many happy summers. He was a recipient of the A.H. Robins “Bowl of Hygenia” in pharmacy, and a life membership in the Chamber of Commerce. In March of 1967 he became the first inductee to the Camrose Sportsmen’s Hall of Fame.

Local golfer Harrison reaches nationals By Murray Green

Andrew Harrison will admit shooting a nine under for a 13-stroke lead to win the Alberta Junior Golf Championships was a better outcome than placing 23rd at nationals. The Camrose golfer shot 72, 75, 76 and a grueling 81 in his four rounds to slip out of the

top 10 golfers at the 2015 Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship that took place Aug. 2 to 6 at Summerlea Golf and Country Club in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec. Harrison had to shoot under 300 to finish in the top 10. In a log jam to place in the top 25, he hit 304 and was in a fiveway tie. His plus nine on

the final round gave him a plus 16 for the tournament. The local golfer set a Camrose Golf Course record this year by shooting a 60 on the Par 71 course. Harrison, as the winner of the Alberta Junior Boys’ Championship, also earned a spot on the interprovincial team

at nationals. He helped Team Alberta place third at nationals. Harrison was joined by Jason Martens of Edmonton and Alexander Smith of Calgary. The host Quebec team and Ontario finished ahead of Alberta. Harrison is heading for the University of British Columbia on a golf scholarship this fall.

Open Minds Walk and Run Aug. 29 By Dan Jensen

The Schizophrenia Society of Alberta Camrose branch will be holding its annual Open Minds Walk and Run on Saturday, Aug. 29. “It’s our yearly campaign to raise funds for and awareness of the Schizophrenia Society,” said Camrose branch consumer peer support coordinator Anthony Holler. The event will feature a 2.5 km Fun Walk for Schizophrenia that demonstrates solidarity among people living with schizophrenia, family members, friends and healthcare providers, a five km walk/run – a timed event that challenges those walkers who want to pick up the pace while enjoying the trail system, and a 10 km run – another timed event that takes runners through the Camrose trail system. The five km walk/run and 10 km run begin at 10:15 a.m. The 2.5 km fun walk begins at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will get underway at 11 a.m, followed by a prize presentation ceremony and entertainment. “We’re going to be giving away some great prizes, including a $1,000 travel voucher to the person who raises $6,000 or more,” said Holler. Prizes will also be awarded to the best dressed team and the team that raises the most money. The 2009 Open Minds Walk and Run had between 25 and 30 participants.

“We are hoping for a few more this time around,” said Holler. “All we need is a little nice weather.” Open Minds Walk and Run registration forms may be obtained by calling the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta Camrose branch office at 780-679-4280, or by visiting the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta website at www.schizophrenia. ab.ca/events.htm. Funds raised by the Open Minds Walk and Run will be used to support family members and people living with severe mental illness, public education campaigns to eliminate stigma and increase community understanding, outreach services to help people maintain independence and social support, advocacy work to improve mental health in Alberta, and activities that help restore hope, courage and dignity for those affected by mental illness. Serving a need The Schizophrenia Society of Alberta Camrose branch plays a vital role in assisting individuals and their families. “We provide support and information to people in distress or in need of answers about the realities of schizophrenia and other mental illnesses,” said Holler. “Our client list includes consumers (those with schizophrenia), family members and friends of people with the ill-

ness, mental health service providers and professionals, as well as any other people interested in learning more about this disease.” The incidence of suicide among people living with schizophrenia is a national tragedy. Forty per cent of all people living with schizophrenia will attempt suicide; 25 per cent of those who attempt will succeed. These are our children, our neighbours, our mothers, brothers, sisters and fathers. People who live with schizophrenia should be treated with compassion and not suffer from the negative stereotypes that hinder the recovery and integration process. “Stigma is one of the greatest barriers to accessing treatment,” said Holler. “We help alleviate that stigma by providing education on the realities of this disease. We help these individuals access support and treatment by providing services where they are needed most – in their communities.” The Schizophrenia Society of Alberta works to correct errors and misperceptions with regard to the word “schizophrenia” and misunderstandings regarding the illness, in hopes that by correcting stereotypes it can make it easier for people with the mental disorder to move on with dignity towards recovery.

Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the transportation department.

Students residing in the City of Camrose Ward Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the transportation department.

Due to longer instructional days, most “Feeder Schools” have additional ‘feeder days’ on which students will not be in attendance. Holden, Ryley, Allan Johnstone and Cornerstone Christian School are operating with a four-day week. Principals at “Feeder Schools” and at the four-day week schools will likely distribute a slightly modified school year calendar.

MUNICIPAL BOUNDARY

Are you ready to rumble?

By Murray Green

Get ready to rumble again, Camrose! The Bailey Theatre will be hosting the Rose City Rumble: A Rockabilly, Surf and Roots Rock Showcase concert Aug. 28 and 29. The Norsemen Brewing Co. sponsored event was so popular last year that organizers turned it into a twoday affair. This year’s line-up features Calgary’s reigning queen of rockabilly, Eve Hell; Camrose steampunk swing sensations Punch Drunk Cabaret; the barn-burning antics of The Give ’em Hell Boys; hometown heroes The Olson Brothers; the sultry surf stylings of The Frolics; the psycho blues showcase of The Black Hyenas; the instrumentally invincible Shaguar; Edmonton’s rock and roll sinners The Preying Saints; Cowtown’s rockabilly rebels Peter and The Wolves and the stupifyingly surftastic 427’s. The Rose City Rumble blends several musical genre types to provide something for everyone. The event starts at 8 p.m. on both evenings. Weekend passes, or single day tickets are available at the door.

Art exhibit The Arts and Regroupement Artistique Francophone de l’Aberta (the art gallery of Grande Prairie) and the Alberta Foundation of Arts are presenting Emplir le Vide (Filling the Void) at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre as part of the Camrose Art Walk which continues until Aug. 26. Emplir le Vide is an eclectic group of paintings, photographic and mixed media works created by artists who are of French Canadian heritage and are living, working and have their art practices here in Alberta. The artists create work that is unique to their specific interests and artistic direction and fills a void that speaks to the growing francophone and bilingual community here in Alberta. The exhibition consists of seven artists: Daniele Petit-Chatelet, Doris Chatelet, Jean-Rue LeBlanc, Patricia Lortie, Rachelle Bugeaud, Sabine Lecorre-Moore, and Sylvia Pinard. Each of these artists submitted a grouping of their work and through a jury process three pieces were chosen from each artist to be included in the exhibition, for a total of 21 works. The works they have produced do not all necessarily portray specific French culture but rather were chosen by the jury to show their individual interests and strengths and to collectively represent the French community in Alberta.

Community tees off to help Children’s Miracle Network By Laurel Nadon

Greg Genest, with his children, Joshua and Sara, took part in the Re/Max Children’s Miracle Network charity golf tournament last year which raised $16,000 for the Stollery Children’s Hospital. This year’s event will run on Saturday, Aug. 15.

A group of likeminded commu n ity members will gather together for the second year in a row to help children – one tee off at a time. Re /Max Real Estate will partner with the Children’s Miracle Network for a charity golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Camrose Golf Course with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The event raised $16,000 last year for the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. Natasha Mayne, realtor and one of the organizers, said the goal is to surpass last year’s fundraising amount. “It gets everybody out and involved in the community and brings to light the children who suffer every day and how we can help them,” Mayne said. “ E ver ybody k nows someone who has gone to the Stollery. They’re so specialized in taking care of children and supportive with not just the children, but the parents as well.” She noted that the spokesperson at the inaugural event last year was Aidan Sheets, a local child diagnosed

with medullablastoma, a type of brain cancer found predominately in children. She is now travelling to Jacksonville, Florida to receive treatment. Hot air balloon rides will be offered at the event (depending on wind), as well as children’s activities, wrapping up with supper at the golf course.

“It gets everybody out and involved in the community and brings to light the children who suffer every day and how we can help them.”

The funds raised at the golf tournament will be used for general priorities such as equipment and programming at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, said Stacey Johnson, director of the Children’s Miracle Network. “If it weren’t for those fundraisers, we wouldn’t be able to fund specialized equipment for our children’s hospi-

tal,” Johnson said. “It’s because of fundraisers like this that we can meet the needs of families in the Edmonton area.” She noted that 50 per cent of the children aided by the hospital are from outside of Edmonton. While a large amount of funding is received from the government, the hospital’s goal is to go above and beyond those funds in order to fund excellence. The Stollery Children’s Hospital helps 220,000 children annually who are 17 or younger. For over 30 years, the Children’s Miracle Network has raised over $4.7 billion and has become one of North America’s leading children’s charities. The network’s goals are to help as many children as possible by raising funds for children’s hospitals, and to keep funds in the community in which they were raised to help local children. To enter a team or support the upcoming golf tournament in any way, contact Trevor Vinet or Natasha Mayne at the Re /Max office at 780-672-7474.

2015 GMC Sierra Most advanced GMC pickup ever

Graeme Davidson

By Dan Jensen

The 2015 Sierra at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC is GMC’s most advanced pickup ever. “The truck features some incredible technologies, abundant power and impressive efficiency, and an unexpectedly quiet cabin,” said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer principle Will McClellan. Efficient design

Sierra achieves a level of perfection and attention that begins with a purposeful premium design where there is no such thing as a small detail. A wind tunnel crafting appearance means air is used to help rather than hinder cooling the engine or otherwise flowing smoothly and quietly over sculpted surfaces, while sound-absorbing materials and triple door seals create a sense of interior solitude. Sierra Denali’s commanding presence is immediately signalled by the unique appearance of its chrome, three-dimensional grille, which fully integrates projector-beam headlamps. Sierra Double Cab features forward-hinged rear doors to make it easier to get into and out of the rear seats.

Once inside, passengers will benefit from 880 mm of leg room. Crew Cab models come with a standard five-foot eightinch cargo bed or an available six-foot six-inch cargo bed. Bumper steps integrated into the corners make it easy to access the cargo box. The deep tread of the step accommodates large boots and handle assists on the top of the side rails help give you a boost into the bed. Loading the cargo box takes less effort thanks to an available EZ-Lift and lower tailgate. To provide a permanent, non-skid surface, the available (standard on Denali) black liner covers the entire below the side rails, including the tailgate, from box top rail and lower tie-down loops Air deflectors are located in front of the rear tires to deflect air around the wheel openings to help reduce turbulence and drag. The result is a more efficient driving experience. Four patented load-bearing upper tie-down hooks are standard. Rated at 113 kg each, they can be repositioned in several places around the

box, depending on the cargo being secured. LED under-rail lights are conveniently positioned under each cargo box rail to make it easier to load or unload at night, or when the box is enclosed by a tonneau cover. Cabin

Sierra’s instrument panel provides a new premium, soft touch feel, aluminum trim, and contrasting stitching that give the interior of an overall contemporary appearance. Seats feature a sculpted design and provide lasting comfort with dual-firmness foam. They retain their shape over time, reducing driver and passenger fatigue. Enhanced rear-seat comfort and access means nearly 51 mm of additional legroom on Crew Cabs. The leather-wrapped heated steering wheel adds warmth whenever you demand it. The available centre floor console maximizes space with a cavernous storage bin large enough for hanging files, a laptop or mobile devices. Pockets on either side of the console and in the door panels offer “grab and go” convenience to help keep everything within reach.

The distinctive interior of the Sierra All-Terrain SLT provides a supportive environment as well as carbon fibre accents, unique All-Terrain leather-appointed seats with French seam contrasting red stitching, special dark aluminum IP material, Bose premium audio system, and other All-Terrain appointments. Off-road adventures

The 4x4 system of the Sierra All Terrain is ideal when traction conditions are variable. When driving in AUTO, the front axle is engaged and power is sent to the front and rear wheels automatically, based on the driving situation. With off-road adventure comes all-sort of dirt and debris attempting to invade the engine. The high-capacity air cleaner is engineered with a larger filter area that requires changing less often. Underbody shield protection helps protect vital components under the truck. Engines

The Sierra EcoTec3 engines – 4.3 litre V6, 5.3 litre V8 and 6.2 litre V8 – feature Direct Injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously Variable Valve Timing to deliver power and efficiency.

No other competitive pickup offers all of these technologies, standard in all of its engines. In fact, the available 5.3 litre V8 generate 355 horsepower and 10.3 litres per 100 km highway (4x2). The available 6.2 litre V8 is paired with the new Hydra-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission on SLT and Denali models. The electric variable assist power rack-and-pinion steering system on Sierra improves fuel efficiency versus engine powered systems. The Sierra has enough strength to achieve an impressive standard V6 engine trailer weight rating of up to 3,447 kg. On select models with the available 6.2 litre V8 and Max Trailering Package, it produces a robust trailer weight rating of up to 5,443 kg based on SAE J2807 performance requirements. And the available 5.3 litre V8 comes in at 5,080 kg with the Max Trailering Package. See the 2015 GMC Sierra at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 385048 Avenue, Camrose. Academy of Dance students 1 JUN 2015 experience 100% Disney 3 magic By Dan Jensen

Camrose dancers shared some of the fabled Disney magic earlier this month. Twenty-six members of the Camrose Academy of Dance turned in some impressive performances on three different occasions at Disneyland, California, between July 7 and 14. “We danced in the Disney parade to ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat,’ which is from the Broadway show Hairspray, on two different days, and performed two of our personal routines, ‘Hoedown’ and ‘Sizzlin’ Sensation’ at the Disney Dance the Magic showcase,” Camrose Academy of Dance artistic director Lisa Rootsaert. “It was quite a bit different from what we normally do.” The Camrose Academy of Dance was invited to perform after submitting an application and a videotape of routines its students had done to the Disney Dance the Magic program. “After telling us we had been accepted they sent us choreography for the parade that kids had to learn so that everyone was doing the same thing,” said Rootsaert. “Once we got there we had a rehearsal to make

As summer gets underway, Albertans are reminded to submit any ticks they find to the Alberta Tick Surveillance Program. The program tests first for the type of tick and then, if necessary, for the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease in humans. Lyme disease is an illness caused by bacteria that is spread through the bite of a blacklegged deer tick. Lyme disease in humans can have serious symptoms but can be effectively treated with standard antibiotics, especially if diagnosed early. The risk of being bitten by a tick infected with the Lyme bacteria in Alberta is very low. How to safely remove a tick: With tweezers, gently grasp its head and mouth parts as close to your skin as possible. Slowly pull the tick straight out – do not jerk or twist it. Try not to squash it. Save the tick in a clean, empty pill bottle or zip-lock bag. Do not add ventilation. Add a small piece of tissue, BRH Barrhead Leader lightly moistened with water, BNV Bonnyville Nouvelle to prevent the tick from drying out. COUGARS ARE PROVINCIAL CHAMPS PEE WEE DIVISION Camrose Cougars beat Red Deer 8-7 to win provincials. Team members in the back row from left to right are coach Shane Ashton, coach Jim Andreassen, head coach Terry Maron and coach Chris Raynard. Third row from left to right Jacob Weiler, Aaron Zazula, Colton Raynard, Chase Masson, Jaxon Ball and Ty Maruschak. Second row left to right Wade Stordahl, Thomas Ashton, Isaac Maron and Alex Andreassen. Front row from left Carter Wood and Jed Good.

Alberta Health Services home care manager Joanne Thomsen left the city for the warmer climate of Victoria on July 27. “I’m following my dream of moving to Victoria when I reached the age of 50. Camrose is my home community. My parents are still alive and my children are in university in Edmonton, so I decided now was a good time for me to leave the nest,” said Joanne jokingly. Too young to retire, Joanne will go back to her first love. “Here I am the home care manager, but out there I will work as a physiotherapist, which I had been for 29 years before moving over to home care, almost two years ago,” explained Joanne. “I’m going back to my original love of directly helping patients. They asked me to be a leader, but I’m not familiar with the BC health system, so I decided not to do that. I want to learn the health system first.” Joanne was thankful people support her. “I wanted to give something back, so that is why I started teaching Sunday school and being on committees,” she said. “I enjoyed teaching and when I was asked to be on United Church council, I found it to be interesting. You don’t think about the running of a church until you are involved. It expanded my horizons. “As a therapist, you always want to help people as best you can. I found it very rewarding volunteering at Martha’s Table. When I retire I would like to do more of that, or help at the food bank.” Joanne has loved animals since she was young. “I wanted to be a veterinarian before I thought about therapy,” she said. “Now I see my children evolving and taking what they learned to help others.” Joanne doesn’t think what she does as work. “I have always been thankful for my profession. This isn’t work, it is a great opportunity. It is about getting the chance to help others. I’m always thankful to have the opportunity to witness miracles,” she said. “It is fun to look back and see that more than medicine was going on.” She also volunteered with 4-H public speaking, the Winter Games, CAFCL, curling events, as well as Martha’s Table and church events.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Jardine ready for the next step By Murray Green

Sam Jardine is pursuing his dream of playing in the National Hockey League. The former Camrose Kodiaks defenceman and team leader left Ohio State University and signed a one year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Rockford Icehogs. Jardine played three seasons with Ohio State where he recorded three goals and added 29 assists. “I can not thank the Camrose Kodiaks family enough for their role in helping me sign my first professional contract and continue to chase my dream to one day play in the NHL,” said Sam. “It was in Camrose under the guidance and encouragement of Boris (coach Rybalka) and Doug (coach Fleck) that I first began to truly believe I had what it took to play professional hockey.” Jardine came to Camrose from Lacombe, following his brother to the Kodiaks. “My days as a Kodiak hold some of my fondest memories and I wouldn’t trade those days in Camrose for anything. A special thanks goes out to Boris and Doug for their continued mentoring even after my days as a Kodiak, my teammates for the lasting friendships we made in Camrose and still share today, Doug and Rhonda Grue who so generously opened up their home to me and my brother Clayton for four years, and the fans, the heart of the Kodiak family. I can’t wait to come home to Camrose again soon.” Jardine spent two full seasons with the Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. In the 2011-12 season, he collected 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points in 51 games. He captained Team Canada West, where he won the gold medal at the 2011 World Junior A Challenge and provided three assists in five games. Jardine was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round (169 overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Ethan Harty, of Strome a young man with many talents performing at Camrose Museum Ethan Harty was born on March 5, 2002 into a farm and ranching family near Strome, where he currently lives with his parents Philip, Marie and his younger siblings Elizabeth and Austin. Among his many interests, he is a capable farmhand and an important part of the family ranch. Ethan first picked up the violin at age six, but his passion for Old Time music was sparked in 2010 while he attended the Strome Centennial Celebration. During the celebration, he was helping to operate the George White steam traction engine for the parade and threshing demonstration. It was there that he heard the live music from Tony Michael and his FoggyMinded Mountain Boys. Ethan was hooked, both on steam power and old time fiddle music. That’s where it all began. Since then, Ethan has studied violin under the instruction of Thomas Schoen (Edmonton) and more recently from Daniel Gervais, Alberta’s own Grand Master Fiddle Champion. At age 10, he attended Camp Calvin (St. Edward,

AB) for the first time where he would go on to meet many influential fiddle friends in the coming years, including Canada’s fiddling sensation, Calvin Vollrath. It was there that he first met Daniel Gervais and asked Daniel to teach him some jam tunes so he could play along at the jam sessions. Ethan very much enjoys jams, and you will find him playing attentively from beginning to end, learning all he can. Ethan’s love of the old time era, spans beyond fiddle music. From an early age, he was recognized by many as being an “old soul.” He actively volunteers with museums in Strome, Camrose and the Reynolds Alberta Museum at Wetaskiwin, where he can be found at the controls of an old steamer, visiting with the crowd, or giving a blacksmith demonstration. In May 2014, he attended a Métis Festival in St. Albert, AB and was able to play for two of his idols, Alfie Myhre and Calvin Vollrath. In July, he attended the Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championship and took home the title of Junior

Champion. Later that fall, he was invited to play his first Old Time Dance with Randy Jones and the Reflections, at the Moose Lodge in Ponoka. Ethan finished out the year with a visit to Astromonical Studios (St. Paul), where he laid down tracks for his first fiddle album. He was thrilled to have Jeremy Rusu from Winnipeg backing him up on the piano. Ethan’s album Steaming Strings was released in January 2015. His music has been a source of joy to all who hear it. Ethan upheld his title of Junior Champion at this year’s Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championships. He also won a class titled “Traditional” which means contestants play with the drumming of their own feet and no back up instruments. This category was open to all ages, even championship adults. Ethan plays locally for events like Founders Days, Battle River Rail Excursions, Killam Rodeo, Vegreville Fair, and for seniors’ groups, to name a few.

Olsens express their appreciation to Camrose museum Eighty-five members (four generations) of the Olsen family from Camrose, Bawlf, Edmonton, Ontario and Liknes, Norway, held a reunion in Camrose at the Masonic Hall. The 1906 Likeness School, now an artifact at Camrose and District Centennial Museum, once sat on land owned by a family ancestor who settled in the Bawlf area. It was named after the Norwegian community from which the family came, although the name was misspelled. Members of the family expressed huge gratitude to Camrose and to the museum for caring for the treasured family heirloom.

Organizers of Big Valley Jamboree happy with turnout By Dan Jensen

Allan Anderson August 22, 1930 – July 23, 2015 Allan, the second child and oldest son of August and Ethel Anderson, was born on August 22, 1930 in Camrose, AB. He resided in the Bittern Lake district for a short time, then moved with his family to the Edberg area, eventually settling on the farm purchased by his grandfather in the early part of the century. He continued to reside on this farm until he moved to Bethany Meadows two years ago. He took his schooling at Dried Meat Lake School and Edberg School, then enrolled in Agricultural Mechanics in Calgary. Allan farmed with his dad, then later took over the farm, continuing until retirement. He enjoyed every aspect of the farming seasons and took pride in his livestock. Horses were an important part of his life – he always owned at least one. Rodeo was a popular spectator sport for him, as he attended many during the summer, as well as CFR and NFR in the fall. Winters found him curling in the Edberg Curling Club draws, as well as some bonspiels. He was part of the group that developed the concept of the new curling rink which was enjoyed for many years. He was a longtime member of the Edberg Elks’ Lodge and assisted in their many community projects. Although he was small in stature, he contributed a great deal. Allan is survived by sisters Audrey Robertson, Doreen Anderson and Enid O’Connor; brother Don (Sharon); nieces and nephews Heather (Doug) Howard, Shane O’Connor, Colleen (Hadley)Hicks, Sheena Anderson, Darcy (Janice) Anderson and Twyla (Darren) Badry; great-nieces and great-nephews Nicole (Peter) Neufeld, Kurt Howard, Dallas Spongberg, Trysta Anderson, Hayden and Seth Badry and Madeline Anderson; and great-great-nephews Timothy and Elias Neufeld. He was predeceased by parents August and Ethel; nephews Scott and Ladds Robertson and Kelly Anderson; brothers-in-law Ron O’Connor and David Robertson; and greatnephew and great-niece Wyatt and Reegen Spongberg. The family of Allan Anderson would like to thank all those who attended the memorial service and lunch, and for the many charitable donations given in his memory. Thank you to Pastor Garth for the comforting service, to the pallbearers, and to Cam and Barry at Burgar Funeral Home. Special thanks to staff at Birch Cottage, Bethany Meadows for the loving care given to Allan the past two years. It was greatly appreciated by Allan and his family.

In loving memory of

Ruby Viola Edge (nee Jonson) August 13, 1940 – August 11, 2014 A Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Friend She left us a legacy of Faith, Friendship, Support, Encouragement and Love that continues to touch us every day.

Country music fans got full value for their money at the 23 annual Big Valley Jamboree July 30 to Aug. 2. “The fans we talked to thought this was one of the best lineups we have had in a lot of years,” said Big Valley producer Larry Werner in a post Jamboree recap. “They felt it had a lot of strength from the start to the finish.” The total attendance at the Jamboree was just short of 80,000. “Single ticket sales were down a little bit, but all of the three day, the vip and the reserve seats were totally sold out,” said Werner. “We were right around the 23,000 mark each day (2,000 below full capacity), which is not too bad considering the economic times that we are experiencing in Alberta.” Werner was happy, for the most part, with the behaviour of all the Jamboree fans. “We know that people come here to party, but we ask them that they keep it under control and show respect

for their neighbours,” he said. “We have also been asking that people keep their campsites nice and clean. If they leave it messy or continue to have it messy every day that is a possible grounds for eviction.” Big Valley Jamboree continues to be a favourite with the entertainers, who consistently rate it as one of the most organized festivals at which they have ever performed. “When they get here all the i’s are dotted and all the t’s are cossed, and there is no wondering what is going to happen,” said Werner. “They are taken care of from the minute they get here to the minute they leave, so from an operational point of view they are incredibly pleased with the advance work we do to get ready for them. The new artists don’t particularly like the vip and reserve seats, but we are a festival that has a lot of tradition and those seats have been there for a long time. We are one of the few festivals that has been holding out on keeping those seats intact, so even though

they maybe don’t like the seats per se, they understand them and know that the audience is there to hear the music and are very appreciative of them.” Big Valley Jamboree staff will be taking a break this week to regather their energies, after which they will return to the office with fresh new ideas for 2016. “Once we get back we will start getting ready for the fall marketing campaign and the ticket sales campaign,” said Werner. “We will also talk about the necessary changes that are required, the little things the company likes to do to increase the satisfaction of the audience. We want to make sure that we take care of our fans the best we can.” Big Valley Jamboree has once again been nominated for the Event of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Association’s 2015 awards ceremony. Werner has once again been nominated as Buyer of the Year. He announced that country entertainer Carrie Underwood will be coming to the 2016 event.

Police make 37 arrests at Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose Over consumption of alcohol was the main cause of the 37 arrests police made during the four days of Big Valley Jamboree. Police made every effort to avoid arresting intoxicated individuals. In some cases, however, due to unresponsiveness or a lack of cooperation, arrests were used as a last resort after all other avenues had been exhausted. Twenty-two people were arrested for public intoxication during the event. Three subjects were arrested and charged with Resisting Arrest. Two subjects were charged with Assaulting a Police Officer. Two subjects were arrested for Impaired Driving and three for Assault. July 31 (BVJ) At 3 a.m. a 17-year-old from Devon was arrested for Impaired Driving in the campground. He provided two samples of his breath with readings of 160mg per cent, which is twice the legal limit. A group of young females reported a male threatening them in the campground. When police arrived the male became aggressive and resisted

arrest. A second male was also arrested and found to have a concealed restricted weapon in his possession. A 30-year-old male from High Prairie was charged with Resisting Arrest as well as Public Intoxication. A 21-year-old male from Driftpile was charged with Possessing a Restricted Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Public Intoxication. August 1 (BVJ) A male concert goer reported that he was assaulted in the concert bowl by a female without provocation. A 53-year-old woman from Vernon, BC, was located, arrested and charged with Assault. While on patrol in the concert bowl a male ran up to police and struck both male members for no reason. A 27-year-old male from Red Deer was arrested and charged with two counts of Assaulting a Police Officer. August 2 (BVJ) A 34-year-old male from Sherwood Park was charged with Impaired Driving and Not Wearing a Seat Belt after coming to the attention of police in the campground. Breath

samples of 190 mg per cent and 200 mg per cent were provided. August 3 (BVJ) Police responded to a complaint of an assault that occurred on a bus in the campground of BVJ. Witnesses stated that two males attacked a 20-yearold male on the bus and punched him repeatedly. The victim sustained a broken nose as well as cuts and bruises. A 45-year-old male from Edmonton and a 31-year-old male from St. Albert were charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm and were remanded into custody. Above and beyond the criminal charges, police issued numerous tickets for charges such as Open Liquor, Public Intoxication, Traffic Violations, Trespassing and Bylaw Offences. The success of policing Big Valley Jamboree hinges on numerous partnerships. These include: the Edmonton Police Service, Panhandle Productions and their security partners, Alberta Sheriffs, Camrose Regional Exhibition, Camrose Fire, EMS and First Aid.

Hook named top saskatoon pie maker By Murray Green

Elaine Hook of Ferintosh was named the best saskatoon pie maker during the sixth annual Battle River Watershed Alliance Saskatoon Pie Contest held on Saturday, July 25 during the Camrose and District Farmers’ Market at the Duggan Mall. Judges sampled 17 pies to determine the winner in one of the closest contests ever. “I was thrilled. I entered last year, but this year I spent more time at it,” said Elaine. “Perseverance paid off. I added rhubarb and my secret ingredient of candy ginger. I love baking, but it might never be repeated. I use feel and taste, rather than a (constant) recipe. I followed an old recipe close, but added my touch. I thought all of the pies looked wonderful.” Elaine enjoys baking. “My mom was an accredited food judge and taught classes. I think it was by osmosis because she would only let me wash the dishes,” she joked. Spectators were able to sample the pies after the judges and every entry received votes in the people’s choice award that went to Anna Harder. “There is no such thing as a bad saskatoon pie,” said David Samm of the Battle River Watershed Alliance. “There is proof because all of the pies received votes.” Pies had to be at least 75 per cent saskatoons and the crust had to be homemade. “It’s a great honour to be picked by people who were there. It must have been hard to pick just one,” said Anna. “I don’t really follow a recipe. I picked wild saskatoons and added about 10 per cent raspberries.” Last year, 18 pies were entered to set the record. “We are happy with the number of entries. We never know how many pies we will receive until the morning before judging begins because people won’t enter a pie they don’t feel comfortable with. Usually, the pies are baked early in the morning and we still receive them hot or warm,” explained Samm. “About half the pies we received were still warm, just out of the oven. We always have fun hosting this event.” Watershed Alliance director Lorne Ferguson talked about the variance in the pies. “I used to think all good saskatoon pies were similar. None of the 17 pies

entered were similar. They were all very good, but all tasted different,” he said. “Recipes are used from past winners to bake pies for our Watershed Festival,” Samm added. “People have the opportunity to sample the award winning pie at the festival in August. We hope to have the winner bake pies for the festival again.” Merchants at the farmers’ market donated the prizes and the Battle River Watershed Alliance added to them for both the judged and people’s choice awards. Cargill also sponsored the event by helping with advertising. “I thank all 17 pie bakers for helping us with this year’s competition,” said Samm. “It has been a great experience for us.” For more information on the Battle River Watershed Alliance, visit website www.battleriverwatershed.ca, or phone 780-672-0276.
