The Camrose Kodiaks’ quest for another league championship is well underway. Main camp wrapped up on Sunday night. Players from as far away as Utah attended the tryouts. From a field of sixty potential prospects, plus goalies, the roster was reduced to about forty players hoping to be on the 2015-16 team. Fifteen players from last year’s team have been signed to this year’s roster. Further cuts took place immediately after the annual black and white game, featuring current and future prospects, on Monday evening. A pre-season tournament featuring four AJHL teams, plus the Kodiaks, will take place in Camrose this coming weekend. The first regular game of the season will take place in Olds on Friday, September 11th. This year’s AJHL showcase will take place in Camrose Oct. 1, 2 and 3 which will be exciting for fans. Dozens of professional hockey scouts will be in Camrose for each of the games. This year Kodiaks’ out-of-town games will not be broadcast on Cam-FM 98.1. Games will be available on FASThockey, using virtually any electronic platform. To listen to Kodiaks’ games you can visit the Kodiaks’ website and follow the link to listen live.

Community mailboxes would mean extra costs for City By Dan Jensen
Canadian Union of Postal Workers Edmonton 730 president Larry Dionne and Sherwood Park letter carrier Kathi Gouldi met with Committee of the Whole Council Aug. 10 to discuss Canada Post’s move towards community mailboxes and the impact that will have on both the City of Camrose and its residents. “With this change there will be added costs to the City in regards to lighting, snow clearing and litter,” said Dionne. “These community mailboxes (CMBs) have been the target of both vandals and thieves, so there are also the added costs of policing. In some communities where crime rings have targeted CMBs there have been instances of having one officer tied up with these issues alone. There were 4,840 thefts from community mailboxes in B.C. As much as they change these things there are people that get into them. With the new ones that sit on top of a pillar the thieves just cut holes, throw them in the back of their truck and away they go.” Dionne also noted that the proposed changes would reduce the number of postal workers at the Camrose office from around 20 to 10. “These people contribute a great deal of money into the local economy and make Camrose a great place to live,” he said. In addition to delivering the mail, Dionne said most letter carriers develop relationships with the community they serve.
“They are the few people that some people will see on a day to day basis. We have had many instances of letter carriers who have found a lost pet and returned it to the owner. They have alerted parents when children have strayed or gotten lost, they have reported suspicious activity in neighbourhoods, or alerted families or authorities when a disabled or aged person has not been seen or cleared their mailboxes for some time. We have had instances where letter carriers have saved lives when a person has fallen ill or been in some kind of distress.” Gouldi said in the 28 years she worked as a letter carrier she has had the opportunity to meet many people. “I go back to homes and I shovel people’s walks and I have little old ladies with whom I have become friends. For me it is personal, not a job.” Dionne feels that the CMBs will negatively impact property values. “I was talking with a realtor who told me that these could drop the value of some million dollar homes by as much as $200,000,” he said. Gouldi feels concern for seniors and others who have mobility issues who will have to brave the ice surrounding the CMBs. “We as letter carriers learn how to fall and we can tuck and roll with the best of them, but not everybody is used to walking on ice or has the gear to get out to the mailboxes. It is not fair to
Chriss Berger has been delivering mail for seventeen years, including the last year and a half in Camrose. She agrees that it could be difficult for Canada Post to determine the right locations for the community mailboxes it is proposing to install.
them if they wind up getting hurt. Not only that, there is issue with the garbage and the doggy doo. There are just so many things about them that seem wrong.” Dionne and Gouldi said something that Canada Post is not telling residents is that they can have their mail delivered once a week if they can’t get to a CMB. “I told this to a couple of ladies and they had not heard anything about it,” said Gouldi. “Why they are not telling people I don’t know. In order to get the mail delivered they have to get a doctor’s note saying they are disabled and that is an additional expense for someone with a low or fixed income.”
More than 600 cities or municipalities have signed on to oppose the cuts to door to door delivery, including the city of Hamilton, which is taking legal action. “Hamilton decided that if Canada Post was going to put these things on city property and make it pay extra costs for lighting and snow removal it was going to charge a $200 CMB licencing fee,” said Dionne. “They lost that in provincial court so they are now going to be taking it to the Supreme Court.” Building and Development Senior Planner Aaron Leckie told council that the City has had three separate meetings with Canada Post regarding community
mailbox locations for all areas south of 48 Avenue that are receiving doorto-door deliveries, and has found that half of the proposed sites need to be changed. “We are doing what we can if this goes forward to find the best possible location in each neighbourhood,” said Leckie. “The mailboxes are expensive to move so we want to make sure we get it right.” Leckie added that while there would be an additional cost to the City for snow clearing, it would be the responsibility of Canada Post to make sure the CMBs are clean and easily accessible.

Council denies redistricting request By Dan Jensen
A request to change the zoning on a pair of lots fronting onto 51 Street from commercial to direct control for the construction of two multi-family residential (four-plex) development was denied by Camrose City council Aug. 10. The lots are located in the mixed use area, as defined by the Camrose Downtown Action Plan. City director of planning and development Aaron Leckie told council the Downtown Action Plan allows for multi-unit residential development on commercially-zoned properties but only if the use provides a transition between the commercial expansion policy area and downtown residential policy areas, and if commercial or multiple uses contained within a building are integrated either vertically or horizontally. The Downtown Action Plan was adopted in 2007 as an amendment to the City of Camrose Land Use Bylaw. “Rather than being used simply as a guiding document, there was a concerted effort to ensure that developers would comply with this policy,” said Leckie in a written report. “This is a position that was shared both by council and administration.” The property in question was subdivided in 1904. It was supposed to be developed as a commercial site, but was developed as a lumber yard. In 2007, Vision Credit Union was built immediately to the east. Leckie questioned whether it would be wise for council to not follow the development policies that are already in place. “We have a good plan and have gone through other processes,” he said. “If you want to change what we have we need to look at things wholistically and not on an application basis.” Mayor Norm Mayer questioned whether the Downtown Action Plan, which is now eight years old, is right for Camrose. “There are a lot of commercially developed properties but there are no commercial developments in the downtown core,” he said, adding there has been nothing on the site for the last 30 years. “To keep a healthy downtown we have to have residential developments.” Mayer said to have bylaws insisting on a commercial component as part of a residential development will only serve to halt any potential projects. “Administration is not supportive of this (land use bylaw) change, but since 2007 no developers have availed themselves of the opportunity to move forward with developments under the existing bylaw’s requirements. Camrose does not have any potential development downtown that will shift the dynamics that exist. Our community is not large enough to force a change in shopping patterns so let’s accommodate phased development where possible, and provide much needed residential accommodations.” Councillors expressed hesitation about making one-off changes to the Downtown Action Plan to accommodate one particular development and queried as to whether the developer would be willing to incoporate commercial development as part of the proposal, even if it meant going without a defined structure. “The developer may give the commercial component more consideration based on the discussions we have,” said Leckie. Council also brought up the possibility of rewriting the Downtown Action Plan. “Let’s go forward with a Downtown Action Plan and come up with something that works,” said Councillor Sears. Leckie explained a number of incentives would have to be considered as part of a Downtown Action Plan review. Councillor Kevin Hycha said that while he is anxious to see the downtown lots filled, he would prefer to see the proposed development one lot over. “I am concerned about the traffic on 51st if we have residential there,” he said. Mayor Mayer expressed his disappointment with the final vote.
“I can’t believe it,” he said. “That is a message to our people as far as development is concerned. That was the only option we had, was to play by the rules. I would just as soon try to get around them.”

Vehicle thefts increase There has been a significant increase of stolen vehicles this year, with another vehicle being reported stolen on Aug. 20. Police are encouraging members of the public to lock their vehicles and to remove their keys and valuables. A 17-year-old youth has been charged with three counts of Sexual Assault following an investigation that was started on Aug. 1. From Aug. 1 to 20 police
received three complaints from females walking on the trial system in Camrose. The women reported that they had been inappropriately touched by a young male riding past them on a bicycle. During the last incident the quick thinking victim was able to take a photo of the youth with her cell phone, which greatly assisted police in identifying a suspect.

Q.
Why choose luxury vinyl tile or luxury vinyl plank?
A.
You won’t believe it’s vinyl. Vinyl flooring has been around for generations. Today’s vinyl isn’t the faux flooring of yesteryear. Modern options are unique and trendy with finishes that closely resemble wood, tile and even stone. Cutting-edge technologies and digital designs make natural-looking textures and greater visual depth possible. Vinyl goes everywhere. Since vinyl replicates hardwood or tile, you can use it in so many ways throughout your home. From highmoisture spaces like bathrooms, to cozy family rooms where you want the look of hardwood. Comfortably superior. Today’s vinyl is available in sheets or as luxury vinyl tile. And whichever application works in your space, you’ll love the comfort it provides. Step across a vinyl floor in your stocking feet, and you’ll notice a more pliable feel to this surface that is relaxed and footfriendly. While there’s much to consider in creating the desired look, style and long-term performance of your floors, know that you’ll find beautiful flooring that’s made affordable at Wideman Carpet One. Plus, the experts at Wideman Carpet One are always available to assist you personally and answer any questions you may have.
Q.
Can Acupuncture help me lose weight?
A:
Clinical studies prove that acupuncture could be an effective tool in helping the 25% of the general population who are overweight. Acupuncture needles will be strategically inserted into “energy pathways”. The needles effectively stimulate the release of endorphins which are sometimes casually referred to as the body’s natural “feel good” hormones. This reaction will bring about a calming and relaxing feeling which in turn reduces the patient’s need for food. The reality is that overeating is often precipitated as a result of unhealthy stress, anxiety or some source of frustration. Acupuncture can alternatively be used to counteract imbalances in the body when the spleen or liver is not functioning to perfection. Either condition can lead to weight gain. Acupuncture can target the kidneys to address water retention and the endocrine system to stimulate nerve and hormonal imbalance and can also target the spleen and thyroid glands to effect sugar and hormonal rebalancing. The adrenal and ovary glands will be zeroed in on if weight gain is due to menopause or PMS. Science also proves that when combined with traditional methods of weight loss, individuals can increase their weight loss success. Answer provided by:

With the current level of W the Canadian Dollar – w what travel destinations do you recommend?
A:
If you’ve always wanted to go to Europe – now is the time! You can pick vvirtually any country and find terrific ttravel value for your dollar. Europe has so much to offer, it becomes difficult to make broad suggestions regarding what to see. River cruises are truly awesome and you can cover an amazing amount of spectacular geography. Train travel is equally compelling and never disappoints. If you enjoy history we can put together a learning package extraordinaire. If you want to include some amazing beaches into your trip Spain, Italy and Greece will be on your destination list. The South Pacific is very hot right now. At present, our dollar favours excursions travel to New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti. The feedback we get from clients who go to this part of the world is enticing. People come home and feel like they want to move to New Zealand, permanently. How can you beat the beaches and the culture of Tahiti? And Australia is full of wonder: from reefs to rainforests, deserts to impressive mountain ranges, it seems to have it all. Don’t forget about the nightlife and the wildlife! Answer provided by:

As first-time home buyers, where do we start?
A:
The best advice you will ever get is tto find a realtor who will act as your eeyes, ears and voice throughout the eentire process. That’s me! It’s my job to be completely transparent, accountable to you and thorough at every step. It is my job to teach you the pros and cons of neighbourhoods of interest to you. I will help you determine a realistic budget and compare your wants and needs to that budget. Behind the scenes I will view and select properties that meet your wish list – properties in which you can afford to live, based on future operational costs. I can assist in coordinating or suggesting other professionals whose services you will require during the buying timeline. This may include homes inspector, mortgage broker, bank lender, lawyer or tradespeople. I will assist you with the complexities of making an offer. I will then negotiate with the seller or his/her representative. It is my job to walk you through related paperwork, ensure its complete accuracy and make sure deadlines are met. Q.
I am worried about the sun damaging my furniture and floors, but I still want to enjoy my beautiful view. How should I dress my windows to solve both of these issues?
A:
Solar shades are an ideal choice f anyone wishing to maintain an for e exterior view while keeping heat out and c coolness within. While maintaining your c comfort, Solar shades block UV rays, protecting interiors from damage and minimizing TV and computer glare. Choose higher openness(7%-14%) fabrics for a better view to the outside, or lower openness(1%-5%) fabrics for better UV blockage. A solar shade is a convenient and easy-to-operate roller shade that is available in a broad selection of colors and valance or fascia styles. Many fabrics in the solar shade collection also coordinate with sliding panel fabrics to accommodate patio or garden doors. Use a versatile dual roller shade to have control over the amount of light entering your room and the degree of privacy. The innovative design pairs two fabrics from the solar and /roller shade collections. Either shade can be raised or lowered independently of the other to give you both privacy at night and a view during the day, while still keeping out UV rays and heat. Q. A:
Is testing water a big chore for hot tub or swim spa owners?
We find there is a bit of a learning curve for new owners in the first few weeks of ownership. After all, optimum balances of chlorine or bromine, and proper levels of alkalinity, ph and water hardness will contribute to your comfort level as well as the optimum performance and longevity of your tub. Testing of your water will take less than five minutes per week. We encourage our clients to use an inexpensive water testing kit, instead of test strips which are actively marketed by other companies. After three to six months of tub enjoyment we routinely find that owners get to accurately know their water by its appearance, smell and mostly by its touch to the skin. Formal water testing will reinforce what clients already know! Water in tubs will need to be completely changed every three to four months, depending on usage levels. This isn’t a big job. Today’s water additives and solutions are gentle on the skin and extremely user friendly. Hot tub n reality, a breeze. ownership today is, in We always offer free water testing and advice. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Favourite things about summer – so far
At the beginning of this summer, I looked forward to a leisurely pace with lots of unstructured time to savour the season. As it turned out, some intense work projects showed up that weren’t even a gleam in my eye at the end of June. I had a busier work schedule than I imagined. But still, I was able to savour the summer. Here are some of my favourite things so far. As you read them, I hope they bring back your own favourite things about summer. *** Being outdoors Making a point of being outside every day – even on days with intense pulled-in-at-the-last-minute projects and ridiculously tight deadlines. Early morning walks in the cool fresh air, catching the tail end of pink and gold sunrises. Being outside with trees and grass. Hearing and seeing birds. Being in nature. Stretched out on a lounge chair on a pier under a canopy of trees, reading fiction and lapping up the sun. Anything near water – lake water, river water, ocean water. Canoe ride on a peaceful lake – with two other people who did the paddling! *** Fresh food Fresh garden vegetables, picked and eaten on the same day. Saskatoons, picked wild and made into an incredible pie. Fresh raspberries, made into jam that day; next February it will still taste like summer. The wild mint patch – which led to wild mint juleps. Patio breakfasts, patio lunches, patio dinners. Barbecues where all I did was eat fabulous food. Other people did the preparation and clean-up. *** Beauty Gorgeous flower beds with riotously coloured flowers. Subdued shade gardens with muted colours and interesting shapes and textures. Canola fields in full bloom under a sapphire blue sky. Feeling peaceful and calm the moment I walked through the gates of a Japanese garden; letting the serenity sink in. Long leisurely sunsets; exquisitely coloured skies. Seeing the June blue moon in a clear night sky. *** Music and entertainment; family and friends Our annual family gathering of four generations. Outdoor music festivals – jazz, roots, blues, rock, reggae, country, folk, symphony. Fringe festivals, jamborees, rodeos, parades, regattas, fairs in tiny communities and big cities. Seeing The Lion King stage production with four family generations and a friend. Being able to combine work travel with a family visit. Visiting other precious people I don’t see very often. *** Everything’s easier in the summer No coats, no gloves, no boots, no hassle. Sandals and shorts. Easy driving. Leaving the windows open all night. *** Our summers are short so it seems important to enjoy this precious season. What are some of your favourite summer pleasures? If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

The “Superintendent’s Message” in the County Booster (Aug. 11/15) announced that BRSD is still making twenty-first century learning strategies a priority (i.e. will emphasize the following priorities) despite demonstrations against SLAs, letters, emails, and phone calls from BRSD students, parents, residents/tax payers, calling for a return to “emphasis” on true excellent academic achievement. Education Minister Eggen has done nothing to replace Johnson’s IEfixated ministerial order, so nothing has changed for Alberta’s 600,000 students! The BRSD announcement means that all our K-12 students are again being used as lab rats in AB Ed’s Inspiring Education/IE failed experiment. Plus, the Grade 3s will be repeating last year’s failed pilot project. Apparently the pilot project results (all reported as “NA” following a drop of 14 per cent in the Grade 3 math exams in 2013) were so abysmal that AB Ed plans to repeat the project. So Grade 3s across
the province will again “guess” (estimate) until they “discover” a “friendly” and/or “comfortable” number, instead of mastering their multiplication tables. It makes one think of the definition of insanity... repeatedly doing the same thing but expecting different results. The academic achievement results indicate this IE experiment is a failure. Ryley School had the highest BRSD class average (72.2 per cent) on last year’s provincial diploma exams. Not one Grade 12 class in BRSD attained the SLA “excellence” category of over 80 per cent. Bawlf School, which used to rank in the province’s top10, ranked 196 out of 410, while Daysland ranked 239. Camrose Comp ranked 139th, and so on (www. eightleaves.com/calbertahigh-school-rankings). Yet the BRSD board would have us believe its “Every Student, Every Day, A Success” mantra! This BRSD mission/ mantra dooms our students to failure because no one is a “success” every day! Most of us would quite frankly settle for each student doing his/her best, so that the end result after 12 years in our classrooms is a graduate who is ready for a “life after school.” Despite 83 per cent of education providers claiming that today’s graduates are adequately qualified for today’s workplace, only 44 per cent of our youth (ages 15 to 29) agree. And only 34 per cent of the employers polled by McKinsey and Co. say that today’s grads are adequately qualified. Minister Eggen needs

Uglem benefits from leadership experience By Murray Green Seanna Uglem attended a world leadership event for youth and plans to use that experience as she charts her life journey. Every year schools in the area nominate students who have the qualities to attend the Global Leaders Conference. Grade 12 Bawlf student Seanna was among several nominees, but was the only one to go from June 28 to July 10. “We were given three options of where we wanted to go. I chose Europe, which was Germany, Austria and Czech Republic. When we got there, it was intense with meetings and building our leadership skills,” Seanna explained. “We went to world organizations such as the UN, USCE and OPEC. We talked to people with more advanced leadership skills. It was based on building qualities to make young leaders for the future.” The conference stretched over two weeks. “We had some long days starting from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sometimes we went for sight-seeing tours for a couple hours in the afternoon and then back to the meetings,” said Seanna. “It was meetings, listening to speakers, workshops and

sight-seeing to government buildings.” Sharing opinions with youth from across the globe was a highlight for the high school graduate. “There were 200 students representing 53 countries in the program. Seeing the interaction between different cultures with people the same age as you was amazing. You don’t get that opportunity every day,” stated Seanna. “Youth varied from 14 to 19, so there were different perspectives that way too. It was a very diverse and intense program.”
Although not all of the students will become world leaders in the future, students were able to learn leadership skills they can put to use in their lives in university and in their careers. “We were given a book at the beginning of the program. We talked about crosscultural communication, decision making, forming goals and overcoming conflicts,” said Seanna. “We played different games, had discussions, debates and from that you learn different skills to go through life in a way that
I hadn’t thought of before. Especially, after hearing opinions from different people and having interaction with different cultures.” Seanna went from taking a small farming community mentality to hearing thoughts from people with varied backgrounds to give her a perspective that she will remember forever. “If there comes a point in my life where I’m at a crossroad and need to make a decision, I can look back and remember in this certain workshop this is what we did.
We came to a consensus on how we solved this problem,” she continued. “The book had steps on how to overcome problems. It gave me and everyone else more tools to be able to use. Especially when we are going into professional careers.” Seanna has enrolled at the University of Lethbridge in education this fall. “I could see myself using some of those tools in both university and teaching,” she said. “It gave me something to use in real life experiences that didn’t come from a textbook. The experience was not what I expected, but it definitely was worthwhile.” Seanna had the option of extending the trip for three days of touring, which she did. “We went to the Alps, which is similar to the mountains we have here, but it was interesting to see people from warm climates react to the snow. They thought it was wonderful, where we are tired of snow sometimes,” added Seanna. Seanna didn’t receive any grants to go. “My parents were my sponsors, so I thank them for the opportunity to go,” she said.

The ND government will be making appointments to over 218 boards, associations, and committees over the next few years. You can be one of them. Check the Alberta Government website for the boards and direct questions and resumes to Alayne Sinclair if you have skills, expertise, training and interest in any of them. July 2015 marked the start of the new 2015-16 benefit year for the Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB) and Special Needs Assistance (SNA) for senior programs. Also for the Dental and Optical Assistance for Seniors program, which provides financial support to lower income seniors. Almost 200,000 letters have been mailed to seniors advising them of their updated eligibility. By calling Alberta Supports Contact Centre at 1-877-644-9992 inquiries regarding benefits and eligibility can be answered. Welcome financial relief was provided to the Village of Bittern Lake, Town of Millet, County of Wetaskiwin, Ponoka County, Camrose County and the cities of Wetaskiwin and Camrose with the recent (MSI) Municipal Sustainability Initiative grants amounting to $10.2 million for the benefit of our constituents. The MSI funding comes from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. Both Camrose and Wetaskiwin’s Victim Services received over $400,000 each for a three year term from the Solicitor General for the Victim Services Program. Samson Cree Nations received $1.4 million for seven projects through the First Nations development Fund (which supports economic, social and community development). Likewise, Ermineskin Cree Nation received $700,000 plus for nine projects from the same fund provided by the Minister of Aboriginal Relations. The Wetaskiwin-Camrose constituency has been a recipient and benefited greatly from these government programs. Let me end with an update on government actions pertaining to the horrible drought. A total of $70 million has already been paid out for lost crops, water pumping rental fees have been cut in half, and additional temporary grazing lands have been made public. The Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (there is one in Camrose) expects over $700 million will be paid to applicable insured claims. Livestock tax deferrals can be made where eligible. For more information one can contact Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Ag-Info Centre at 310-3276 or the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation at 1-877-899-2372. All of the drought assistance has been coordinated by the Agriculture ministry. While the constituency office in Camrose has been up and running for a month with my constituency assistant Niel Parker doing a fantastic job, the Wetaskiwin office is still waiting for its furniture, telephone and computers. Niel will gladly direct you to the government agency you are looking for. Call 1-780-672-0000. Also this fall, I will be placing an ad for a part-time secretarial position for the Wetaskiwin office. Keep an eye open for that. I thank everyone for their support and words of encouragement. Thank you for the many gifts and opportunities to learn about the great service you are providing to your communities. Greatly appreciated.
The Camrose Senior Society is located at the Mirror Lake Centre, 5415-49 Avenue, and is a place for anyone 50 years of age and over to meet new friends, have fun, exercise and associate with others. The Society office is open every day from 10 a.m. to noon. All of the people who help with the Society by working at the desk or taking a position on the board are volunteers. Our meetings are held the last Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. and our annual general meeting is held in March. The membership is just $15 per year. We have nearly 400 members and there are 17 clubs that you can join. Most clubs charge a small fee to play. The clubs are: cribbage, canasta, bridge clubs, duplicate bridge and stick rummy. We also have floor curling, pool, floor shuffleboard and dance clubs such as the Rose City Square Dance Club, which meets every Friday from October to April, the Wednesday Night Dance Club, and the Wild Rose Dance Club, which holds dances on the first Saturday of every month. Other clubs come to the facility to take part in tournaments and other events.

Take precautions when solicited Charities often target certain groups of people when soliciting donations. Those groups may include past donors and people who have recently attended charitable fundraisers. Such an approach can be very effective. It should come as no surprise that criminals posing as legitimate organizations tend to target specific groups of people as well. Anyone can be fooled by a fraudulent charity, but such criminals tend to target seniors more than others. Seniors often make attractive targets to con artists because they are most likely to have substantial savings, own their homes and/or have excellent credit. In addition, elderly victims of fraud and other crimes are less likely to report those crimes out of fear that their families may feel they are no longer able to take care of themselves or manage their own finances. These factors make seniors especially attractive and vulnerable to con artists, particularly those who prey on well-intentioned men and women by posing as fake charities. But there are steps seniors can take to protect themselves from fraud. Be skeptical of solicitors. Many con artists will indicate that persons have given to the charity in the past, hoping that prospective vic-
tims simply won’t remember if that claim is valid or not. If a solicitor or appeal letter claims that you donated in the past, don’t simply take it at face value, especially if you don’t recall making such a donation. Get specific information about alleged past donations, checking that information against your own bank records and receipts. Many donors claim donations as deductions on their tax returns, which also can be used to verify or debunk solicitors’ claims. Though not all solicitors claiming a past history of donations are dishonest, this is one way that criminals attempt to create a rapport with potential victims, so such claims should be verified before making any donations. Don’t feel obligated to reciprocate a gift with a donation. Many charities send gifts, be it mailing labels or holiday cards, to prospective donors as a token of appreciation for past donations and as a way of encouraging future donations. Con artists are fully aware of this tactic and may try to imitate it in an attempt to defraud potential victims. No matter if the people behind those mailing labels or holiday ornaments are legitimate charities or con artists, you should not feel
compelled to reciprocate a free gift with a financial donation. Beware of solicitors pressuring you to donate. Reputable charities should not be on the verge of shut down if you fail to make a donation, so such organizations never pressure prospective donors into making donations. If a solicitor is pressuring you into making a donation over the phone or in person, chances are strong that this person is not representing a reputable charity. In such instances, hang up the phone or, if the solicitor is on your property, politely close the door, ask the solicitor to leave your property and contact the local authorities. Send donations directly to the charity after independently confirming their address. When making charitable donations, those donations should never be given directly to solicitors. Donations should only be made after you have independently confirmed the charity’s address and mailed straight to the organization. Never make a cash donation, as cash provides no paper trail should you want to deduct your donation or should you learn that you were victimized by a con artist posing as a representative of a reputable charity.

Camrose rated as one of the best places to live By Dan Jensen
Camrose is continuing to hold its own when it comes to quality of life. MoneySense magazine’s yearly (2015) article on the best places to live in Canada has ranked Camrose number 111 out of 209 communities. The article notes that the Camrose population has grown by 12.6 per cent to 19,797 and that, over the past five years, the crime rate has decreased by 20.9 per cent. The article also listed an unemployment rate of 5.57 per cent (3.3 per cent according to the Alberta Labour Force July, 2015 report), a median household income of $67,564, an average household net worth of $363,782, an average household discretionary income of $43,124, an average value of primary real estate of $247,392, and an average time to buy a home of three years. The average property tax was listed as 2.459 per cent, while the average property tax as a percentage of Alberta income was listed at three per cent. The reported average income tax for individuals earning $50,000 was $9,350.

The winding trail system contributes to a high quality of life for Camrose residents.
The percentage of owned homes was stated to be 71.5, while the percentage of rented homes came in at 28.5 per cent. The article showed that just over seven per cent of residents are employed in the field of health care and that just over one per cent are employed in arts and recreation. The number of doctors per 1,000 residents was listed as 1.9. New businesses
Camrose is proving to be an attractive place for new businesses. The City of Camrose economic development second quarter newsletter shows
that at least 18 new businesses have opened their doors so far in 2015. Nineteen city businesses have changed locations in Camrose, while 10 businesses have changed ownership. New home occupation businesses total 43. New businesses that will be coming to the Camrose Commons area (beside Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre) include Winners, an off-price retailer which offers a combination of fashion, brand, quality and price, Brown’s Social House, a restaurant dedicated to the art of presenting exceptional cuisine in its own stylish

A report from Altario Appraisals shows there were 102 sales of improved properties (excluding vacant land) in the second quarter of 2015, down from 135 a year ago and a record 140 in 2013, but on par with quarter two in both 2011 and 2012. The report also indicated that the average sale price was down by 1.4 per cent
from the first quarter and 4.3 per cent from the second quarter of 2014, and that the 12 month rolling average which started an upward trend in quarter one of 2013 ticked downward from a record of $298,621 in quarter one to $295,301. The median price (the price at which half the sales in the period were higher and half lower) in the second quarter was a record $308,250, up by 7.8 per cent from the previous quarter and 5.4 per cent from the second quarter of 2014. Building permits
The City of Camrose issued building permits with a total value of $23,197,769 in the first seven months of this year, an increase of $4,451,630 from the same period of 2014. Tourism Camrose to lease space at museum By Dan Jensen
City council approved the lease of a portion of Camrose and District Centennial Museum to Tourism Camrose Aug. 10. Tourism Camrose will pay $170 per month, the same as it is paying now at its current location in the basement of the Gateway Centre. “The Gateway Centre is not ideal for people trying to find or do business with Tourism Camrose,” said Tourism Camrose chairperson Judy Bergstrom in an Aug. 5 letter addressed to the mayor and councillors. Tourism Camrose assessed several other locations in Camrose before deciding that the museum’s main building would be a plausible option. “Through discussions with acting manager Janine Carroll we think it could be done fairly easily and cheaply by erecting a pony wall or divider in the middle of their current office space,” said Bergstrom. “It would mean relocating her summer staff to an appropriate office space on the east part of the building.” Tourism Camrose believes that having tourism-related organizations located together would raise awareness of the museum and bring more visitors. It also feels the $170 monthly lease could go to the museum to assist with efforts to access grant funding for programs, and create more sustainability. Mayor Norm Mayer said that leasing the space to Tourism Camrose would provide better coverage at the museum. “Tourism Camrose operates 12 months of the year so we would be able to have someone there during the offseason and provide more security at the site.” As its funding for operations comes from annual grants from the City and County, as well as annual membership fees, Tourism Camrose is not able to pay the asking rates for spaces that are currently available. City councillor Max Lindstrand said the new site would give the museum a much higher profile than it has at the Gateway Centre.

Servold sees potential for Camrose ski hill By Dan Jensen Former Canada Olympic park venue operations foreman and Winter Olympics chief of the hill Jon Servold sees a lot of potential for the Camrose ski jump and downhill ski hill. “My feeling is that it is possible to renovate the jump and make it useful again,” he told members of the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak Aug. 18. “We need to look at the long term picture and the long term possibilities.” Servold feels the ski hill should be a place that kids can go to practice the newer disciplines of skiing like freestyle or basic alpine. “It could be a toboggan tubing park if we got a surface lift, a t-bar or a rope tow,” he said. “We don’t need a chair lift. It is obviously not big enough to demand that.” Servold believes that based on the budgets for major hill modernization projects in Calgary, improvements to the ski hill and even the ski jump itself could be done at a fairly low cost. “I would really like to encourage a re-survey of this facility,” he said. “You would have to do some geo and environmental assessments, as well as assess the structural integrity of the tower. Maybe the ski jump
Jon Servold, left, discusses the Camrose ski hill and ski jump with Rob Rolf.
has to go and you have to start from scratch, I am not sure. There are some limiting factors like the creek down at the bottom, which would be partly an environmental thing.” Servold noted that one of the difficulties with the jump as it is now is the vertical rise from the creek to the tower at the top. “You would have to stretch it out horizontally somehow,” he said. “There has to be a smaller tower or a smaller hill that fits with the terrain.” Servold noted that the ski jumping has changed considerably since the Olympic Games in Calgary in 1988 and the Alberta Winter Games in Camrose in 1990, and that there are not many places anymore that have ski jumps that
are suited to the type of jumping that takes place. “The sport had a tough time in the 1990s,” he said. “After the Calgary Olympics ski jumping went from guys jumping with their skis parallel under their bodies to flying in a big v. The skis became 20 cm longer and the aerodynamic suits that they (athletes) started wearing filled a little more, like a parachute. Basically the glide ration of the ski jumper went from dropping to soaring. Combining the old steep jumps with the new equipment and technique is basically like flying out and dropping down an elevator shaft.” Servold said he would love to be a resource or a member of a team that would look into all the possibilities surrounding the ski jump and ski area.
“It is a dead space now but there are a lot of footprints on the hill. Why couldn’t it be a showpiece park, a multi sports park, instead of having just one tower that scares people away? There should be magnets for kids to come and do other sports too. Why not use (the area) instead of letting it be a human and physical desert? We could make it into a little bit more and involve as many local stakeholders as we could.” Servold said there are a number of aeronautical, mechanical, structural and electrical volunteers who volunteered to assist with ski hill renovations in Calgary. “If we can involve some local resources like that here I think we could at least take a look at the local possibilities,” he said, adding he has a lot of experience with physical facilities and I would be glad to be part of that. “Nowadays you can get a drone survey for around $2,500. We could recruit a facility designer, and Ski Jumping Canada can provide all the information on that. If there is a freestyle community in town that would like to make a slope style facility they could have input, and the luge guys, which have maintained some activity over the years could rejig their course, especially if
we could get snowmaking back and a lift. The sky is the limit.” Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak member Rob Rolf said he was part of the club which had the ski jump evaluated after the 1990 Alberta Winter Games and found that, due to the height of the structure, it was only good for intermediate and expert skiers. “We thought we could go on the northwest side because there was a beautiful bowl area for skiing, but the snowmaking wasn’t very good back then and it was very expensive to operate, so there were a lot of issues. We had an evaluation of the facility by an outfit that said there weren’t many areas that had as good an area potential for development, but as individuals and a small group we just couldn’t do it.” Rolf said there was another group about eight years ago that wanted to get the ski hill operating again. “They looked at all of the evaluation and gave up on it because it was too big of an undertaking.” Servold believes a new facility at the Camrose ski hill could play an important role in training athletes and feeding them into the national program. The spotless floor, the pleasant aroma and the tasteful displays of water coolers, accessories, and the backbone of the business, bottles of purified and spring water, make a powerful first impression. The lady at the helm of the thriving water company is Verna Chenard, who is most often seen right on the sales floor helping customers, explaining her quality product and process and carrying the heavy bottles of clear, tasty water out to customers’ vehicles. When asked what makes her business stand out as a leader in a crowded, competitive market, she answers quickly, “It’s our attention to detail and our genuine care for our customers. Our customers trust we’re providing the best product possibly available. We love to tell them about our ozone and ultraviolet light process - the way it enhances the water quality and, of course, the taste. We consider it the customer’s right to have our staff put bottles carefully inside their vehicles or delivered right to their homes or businesses. Our customers are the reason we are successful - we strive to make sure they get treated right!” Purity Water and owner Verna Chenard have another solid reputation - that of being a great corporate citizen. “We are supporters of a variety of charitable causes with a preference for local causes versus national campaigns. We also tend to sponsor and support local sports teams. (Verna’s and Paul’s three sons - Jonathan, Matthew, and Jesse all played high levels of competitive hockey.) Verna and her team offer Camrosians tasty, safe water. Stop by soon!

The life of war veteran and distinguished citizen Theo Bailey and the 100th anniversary of scouting in Camrose were celebrated during the 12th annual Founders Days ceremony and reception at the Bailey Theatre Aug. 14. Bailey was one of more than 600,000 Canadians who gave up their aspirations of being a farmer, homesteader or business owner to serve in the First World War. He and his battalion fought in Belgium and France at Ypres, Salient, the Somme, and Vimy Ridge. After being discharged from the military, he returned to Camrose where he was a pharmacist, drug store owner, Royal Canadian Legion president, postmaster, accomplished athlete, Chamber of Commerce member and hockey referee. “He came to Camrose before the war and he was one of those who signed up and went,” said Battle RiverCrowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson. “He left his hopes of a business, came back, went to university, and then reached his dream of being a pharmacist.” Sorenson said it is important to remember those people who went before us and left a legacy.
“I think each one of us wonders what our legacy will be after we are long gone. We have a history in Camrose of which we can be proud.” Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley noted that Camrose Founders Days events are very important for the city of Camrose and its residents because where Camrose wants to go is going to be determined by the people who bring their values and beliefs from the past. “To have historical societies and individuals that we honour is indeed a great opportunity to build a wonderful future,” he said. The first meeting to establish the Camrose District Scouts was held in 1915, seven years after Scouting came to Canada. “Organizations like Scouts help us grow and learn,” said Sorenson. “They teach skills and provide us the opportunities to experience events and many other endeavours. We learn social skills, camaraderie and how to develop friendships.” Hinkley recalled with fond memories some of his experiences in Scouts. “One of the things we had to learn to do was walk straight and walk with our head up,” he said. “We had to walk with a book on our head and we would have
races and activities where we practiced proper posture.” Hinkley said that Scouting founder Lord Baden Powell became a hero to him. “He showed me that during tough difficult times you do not surrender, you do not give up. If you use your wits and intelligence you will survive.” Camrose City councillor Agnes Hoveland talked at the ceremony about the importance of celebrating what has happened in the past. “Thank you so much again to the Camrose Founders Days festival committee and the awesome job you consistently do in promoting our history,” she said. Hoveland noted that she was a member of Girl Guides when she was growing up and became a Brownie leader when she moved back to Camrose. “Guiding and Scouting are very important for the youth and we have a rich history of that,” she said. Scout leader Rod MacInnis said Scouting helps people find common ground and learn how to communicate. “There is the educational component of outdoor activities and doing things outdoors, as well as
work that is done on leadership and development, but its ultimate goal is to bring together people who aspire to similar values,” he said. “That is partly why I became involved in Scouting and why I am still involved.” MacInnis said there are approxinately 60 or 70 youth who are involved in Camrose Scouts. “We have all sections of Scouts in Camrose. We have Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, we have Venturers and we have Rovers. Our ultimate goal is that those Rovers become our leaders.” MacInnis said Scouts is very grateful for the community support it has received, including the Rotary Club of Camrose, which was very instrumental in developing the Rotary Youth Centre. Cindy Gordichuk expressed her thanks to the Founders Days Committee for honouring her grandfather, Theo Bailey, affectionately known in the community as “Mr. B.” “The concept of Founders Days is a new one to me but what a wonderful way of bringing forth the past of the community and keeping the stories of our forefathers alive,” she said. “It is important to remember what they went through to give us the lives that we enjoy today.”

BATTLE RIVER SCHOOL DIVISION #31 SCHOOL OPENING INFORMATION 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR
Our Mission The Battle River School Division, in partnership with parents and the community, will ensure that each student acquires the necessary knowledge, skills, and core values to be a caring, productive member of our democratic society.
SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR
On behalf of the teachers, administrators, and support staff, I would like to welcome each and every student to Battle River School Division for the 2015-2016 school year. This year staff will continue to strive to achieve our vision: Every Student, Every Day, A Success by providing a holistic educational experience focused on the academic, character and relationship development of each student. As a school division, we will emphasize the following priorities for the coming year: 1. Literacy 2. Numeracy 3. 21st century learning 4. Welcoming and Caring school environments We believe this is an exciting time for education in Alberta. Battle River School Division is entering its 20th year of providing educational service to students and we anticipate that the year will bring many rewards and successes for each student in BRSD. Rita Marler, Superintendent of Schools
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY
Schools will be closed on August 27, 2015 to permit all staff to participate in learning opportunities that will better prepare them to serve students. Division Office will remain open.
NEW REGISTRATIONS
Students new to Battle River School Division #31 should register at the school they will be attending and provide a birth certificate when registering.
BUSING SERVICE
The first day of busing for all students will be Tuesday, September 1, 2015.
Students residing in Beaver County, Camrose County and Flagstaff County Students new to these areas should register for bus service by calling the Transportation Department at 780-672-6131 extension #5244, or 1-800-262-4869 extension #5244, well in advance of school opening so that efficient routes can be planned. Students who were transported to a Division-operated school by bus during the last school year will be included in our plans for the 2015-2016 school year. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the transportation department.
Students residing in the City of Camrose Ward Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost. Reminder: bus passes must be picked up at division office; students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus. • Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $395.00 per student in grades 1-12, or $355.50 per ECS student. Registration for busing of non-eligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee. Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus. • Bus Passes are sold as a year pass, no half-passes or winter passes will be sold. • We now accept cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard and Debit. Battle River School Division #31 will be accepting registrations for busing in the City of Camrose from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. during the week of August 17-21, 2015 at the following address: 5402-48A Avenue, Camrose. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the transportation department.
Due to longer instructional days, most “Feeder Schools” have additional ‘feeder days’ on which students will not be in attendance. Holden, Ryley, Allan Johnstone and Cornerstone Christian School are operating with a four-day week. Principals at “Feeder Schools” and at the four-day week schools will likely distribute a slightly modified school year calendar.

4-H Multi Club looking for members and leaders

“4-H” ain’t all cookin’ n’ cows” is an expression coined by the hall of fame leader Shirley Trimble. The leaders of the Round Hill 4-H Multi Club have encouraged members to try projects that are a little different. We would like to invite new members from the communities of Camrose, Hay Lakes, Kingman, Tofield, Ryley, as well as Round Hill. Sometimes distance is a factor in young people having a club to join. Well, when one thinks about it, Round Hill is roughly 30 km away from each of the above mentioned towns. 4-H is fun while learning new skills. If you can’t have fun, meetings are boring. There are ways of learning communication, for example, in an enjoyable manner. Members have the opportunity to attend camps and workshops that they rave about how much fun they had there. Age for Cleaver kids: six to eight. Member ages range from nine to 21 years as of January of the registration year. We need extra leaders in order to add more projects to our learning journey. Discussions held recently centered around adding projects such as sewing, cooking, pets/sheep. However we need leaders and parent helpers. In the past years members have enjoyed touring the vet clinic in Tofield, going to winter camps, participating in the local suppers and farmers’ markets, and entering their items made into the local ag society summer bench fair. Leaders encourage members to have their record books and diaries completed so they have an opportunity to be eligible for award medallions, trips, and scholarships available to 4-H members. High school students can achieve more credits through the 4-H program as well. Members learn commitment to their club by attending 70 per cent of meetings, participating in a communication event, and helping with Achievement Day. Families are encouraged to participate in the club and new leaders are needed as well. Please consider joining this club for learning skills and having fun. For information about the whole 4-H program, look up the 4-H website: www.4h.ab.ca, and contact leader, Helen Andrews at 780-903-9189.

2015 Ford Focus New design and advanced technologies
Craig Beddoes By Dan Jensen
The 2015 Focus at Lamb Ford Sales delivers a new exterior design, completely revised interior and advanced new technologies for improved customer comfort and safety. “The combination of compelling, modern design and the most high-tech interior in the class will appeal to contemporary customers who desire a small car with very sophisticated features,” said Lamb Ford sales manager Brett Read. “What makes Focus so attractive to consumers today – being great to drive, delivering exceptional fuel economy and value, and offering leading-edge in-car technologies – is amplified with the new Focus.” Exterior Available in four- and five-door versions, Focus features a restyled hood and grille, available signature lighting for the headlamps and taillamps, new rear lamp clusters and a restyled trunk lid. The Focus ST includes 18-inch Rado Grey aluminum wheels and 18-inch machined aluminum with
black-painted pockets as an option. Inside Inside, colours and materials have a clean, modern look, with satin chrome detailing, new seat trims, switches and an available heated steering wheel. Storage is improved with a new centre console incorporating adjustable cupholders, and a new, easier-to-access glove box. Technology Focus is as ready to make things happen as you are. Features including the SYNC® 6 communications system that helps keep you connected and the rearview camera that helps you see what’s behind your vehicle were designed to do more than complement your drive – they make it more convenient. The rearview camera appears on either a 4.2 inch screen or an eight inch screen that comes with MyFord Touch equipped cars. The available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) uses rear radar sensors to help warn you when a vehicle is detected in your blind spot. And cross-traffic alert can help warn you of vehicles approaching from either
side when you’re slowly backing out of a parking space. Should a Focus driver start to drift out of the current lane without a turn signal on, the system provides a warning through a series of steering wheel vibrations that mimic a rumble strip. If the unintended lane departure is not corrected by the driver, the aid function of the system actively applies steering torque to help the driver direct the car back toward the centre of the current lane. Smart There’s smart. And then there’s smart done with purpose. The Focus was designed to keep you comfortable and in control down every road you travel. The available SecuriCode™ keyless entry keypad lets you conveniently unlock your vehicle without a key or push-button remote. Grabbing a cold steering wheel is a thing of the past with the new available heated steering wheel making those uncomfortably chilly days a little more comfortable. MyKey® encourages responsible driving by others when they’re behind the wheel of your Focus,
by letting you limit top speeds, decrease audio volume and more. Performance While Focus is always powered by driving dynamics, the big story this year is the innovative technology under the hood. The SE EcoBoost® package centres on the available 1.0L EcoBoost® I-3 engine—an engine that’s small, but packs enough punch to handle almost any driving situation powerfully and efficiently. Twice already, automotive journalists have named the EcoBoost® powerplant International Engine of the Year for 2012 and 2013. In Europe, where it is already on five nameplates, it accounts for 32 per cent of sales of the current generation Focus and 26 per cent of Fiesta sales. “The 1.0 litre EcoBoost® engine is proof that excellent fuel economy and performance can come in one package,” said Read. “Focys is already known for bringing together efficiency and fun, and the latest addition will bring consumers a whole new level of enjoyment.” The standard 2.0L TiVCT I-4 engine is flex-
fuel capable, so you can use either unleaded, E85 or any combination of the two. The Focus Electric runs exclusively on electricity – keeping you on the road and away from the pump. The Focus Electric is powered completely by a rechargeable stateof-the-art lithium-ion battery. That means it never needs a drop of gas or an oil change, ever. And being 100 per cent electric also means zero CO2 emissions-talk about improving your carbon footprint. The unique sport suspension offers excellent handling without sacrificing power. Suspension and shock absorber upgrades include a new shock absorber valve design providing improved interior quietness, a new electronic stability program system with less intrusion and improved comfort, and a change to the rear suspension to give drivers a more connected feel to the road. You can see the 2015 Ford Focus at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Back to school tips for drivers With children and youth returning to school, the Canada Safety Council reminds drivers to be extra cautious on the roads during this busy time of year. “We owe it to the young people in our communities to review and respect the rules around school zones,” says Jack Smith, president of the Canada Safety Council. “As the summer break come to a close, remember that extra traffic on the road means increased likelihood of collisions.” Driving Tips to Keep Kids Safe
1. Reduce your speed. Be more careful in residential areas where children are present. Respect speed limits in school zones and playground zones. 2. Stop for school buses displaying the flashing red lights and the extended stop arm. In most cases, traffic in both directions must stop for school buses. Do not continue on until the flashing lights stop. 3. Obey crossing guards. 4. Never overtake other vehicles within a school zone or within a half block of any crosswalk. 5. Give cyclists a wide berth (a minimum clearance of one metre is the rule in some jurisdictions).

Hay bale art a unique part of Prairie Fun Days By Dan Jensen
Bill and Barb McDonald have always received a kick from being part of the Havin' a Hay Day Hay Bale Art contest as part of Prairie Fun Days. "It is a lot of fun to enter," said Barb. "People really enjoy seeing what we are able to come up with. They tell us it really brightens their day." The McDonalds have been part of the Hay Bale Art Contest since it was started three years ago. Their entry in this year's contest was a bale made to look like a cat, with wire for whiskers pail lids for eyes and buckets for ears.' "The entries really don't take a lot of time to put together," said Barb. "The hardest part is getting the idea. Once we have that we use things from around the farm like wire and spray paint and pail lids to create a 3D sculpture." Barb and Bill's 2014 entry, "Hay Ewe," a sheep with a garbage can for a head and mud flaps for ears, received the third most votes from those participating in the Prairie Fun Days event. "We ended up winning a gift certificate from

Astronaut paying a visit during Milky Way Days By Laurel Nadon
For anyone who has ever gazed at the night sky and wanted to learn more, a chance to speak with an astronaut will soon be here. The wonders of the night sky will be celebrated at the upcoming Milky Way Days, being held for the first time at two locations. The Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve’s 10th annual event will be held at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park on Saturday, Sept. 5 and at Elk Island National Park on Sunday, Sept. 6, from 2 to 11 p.m. both days. The event will include solar viewing, a scavenger hunt for children, a night sky photography exhibit and indigenous astronomy stories and laser walk by Wilfred Buck. “It’s a really great introduction to what a dark sky preserve is,” said Isabella Hodson, visitor services supervisor at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park. Keynote speaker Ross Lockwood, who worked with NASA on a four-month Mars simulation project in 2014, will discuss space exploration, living on planets and the history of Mars. Lockwood, originally from Kelowna, now resides in Edmonton and earned his PhD from the University of Alberta. “It’s really amazing for people to get up close and personal with an astronaut,” Hodson said. “We have some
Astronaut Ross Lockwood will speak at the 10th annual Milky Way Days. The Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve will hold the event at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park on Saturday, Sept. 5 and at Elk Island National Park on Sunday, Sept. 6 from 2 to 11 p.m. both days.
real life astronauts who are our neighbours. I think he will have some valuable information on Mars and the future of space exploration.” She noted that the goal of the event is to increase awareness of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve as well as the importance of dark skies. A dark sky is defined as an area accessible to the public in which all lights are minimizing their contribution to light pollution. This includes red light-
ing at night and facing lights downwards, both practices that Miquelon Lake Provincial Park has undertaken. Hodson noted that bright skies at night can interfere with bird migration and seasonal changes. “A tree won’t lose its leaves if it doesn't have that signal of shorter days,” Hodson said. “Frogs and salamanders won’t mate or feed at night without light and dark signals.” During the day, space
costumes will be available to be tried on at a photo booth, and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) will have a telescope with filter set up to see the sun. Sunspots and flares will be visible, in delayed time. “Space and stars fascinate people, but can be hard to conceptualize,” Hodson said. Scott Mair, a community outreach coordinator with Parks Canada, will sing in the afternoon. In the evening, there will be a DSI (Dark Sky Investigation) musical theatre. On the beach, the RASC will have a family-friendly laser tour of the night sky. Hodson said that indigenous astronomy stories are something that will be new to a lot of people. “I think it will be rather fascinating to hear this new perspective that will open our eyes and let us see the night sky from a different perspective,” Hodson said. Recently, the town of Bon Accord became the first Canadian town and 11th in the world to be declared an International Dark Sky Community. “People are starting to be more aware of the environment and climate and preserving what we have,” Hodson said. “Half of the time we spend on earth is night time. Night is just as important as daytime. People who live in cities don’t
get to see stars, meteors, constellations and the Milky Way because of the sky glow and light pollution.” The event is timely as 2015 has been declared a UN International Year of Light and light-based technologies. “It’s about light and all the ways we use light,” said Jean Funk, supervisor at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre and long-time participant at Milky Way Days. “People need dark and they need light. Our lives depend on it and the plants and animals depend on it. The goal is for people to appreciate our relationship with our night sky and ways we can celebrate astronomy and also ways to celebrate space.” She noted that our homes and parking lots are good examples of spaces that need to be well-lit for safety and security, but where the lights aren’t required all night. “We need the right light in the right places,” Funk said. In 2006, the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve was formed as a partnership between Elk Island National Park, Cooking Lake Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, Strathcona Wilderness Centre, Ukrainian Heritage Cultural Village, RASC, Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, Sherwood Park Fish and Games Association and the Beaver Hills Initiative.

After a long and fulfilled life, Margaret Davis passed away peacefully at Sunrise Village in Camrose, AB on August 15, 2015 at the age of 101. She was born on October 26, 1913 in Whitesand, SK, and was the eldest of nine children of Wasyl and Pearl Lackmanec. She received her early education at a local school built on her father’s farm, then later attended school in Yorkton where she played on the girls’ hockey, basketball, and softball teams and sang in the school choir. At the beginning of the Depression her father could no longer afford room and board for her schooling so she had to go to work to help support the family, earning five to eight dollars a month. In 1933 she met her future husband, Brian Davis, and a year later they were married. They farmed at Springside, SK for four years before moving to Rose Valley, SK. Although they had a car at that time, they couldn’t afford gas or a license so they made the car into a Bennett Buggy and travelled by horses. They bought a quarter section of bush land with a small log house on it which became their first home. Margaret was no stranger to hard work and everything had to be done the hard way by hand as there was no equipment available. In later years, they purchased more farmland. During these difficult times five children were born and raised without modern conveniences such as telephone, electricity or running water. Margaret was a hard worker and faced every challenge with determination and perseverance. Although there were many hardships, she cherished these years on the farm with her family. Her love and passion for life, in addition to her family, was gardening and cooking. She always had a large flower garden and took pride in making bouquets for family, friends and neighbors. She entered many horticultural shows and received more than 100 prize ribbons for her beautiful flowers, vegetables and baking. She was very active in the church where she served on the board and sang in the choir. She was involved in other community organizations such as The Goodwill Friendship Club, Homemakers, Cancer Association and the Seniors’ Club. She was a news correspondent for the local paper for about 40 years. In 1980 Brian and Margaret sold the farm and built a house in the town of Rose Valley. There Margaret continued her involvement in community events and was a willing organizer and volunteer whenever there was a need. In 1993 Margaret and Brian moved to Camrose, Alberta to be closer to family. She continued to be passionate about her gardening and entered her prize-winning flowers in the Camrose horticultural shows. Brian passed away the following year. Five years later Margaret moved to a condo where she lived until the age of 97. She continued to be involved on the social committee planning parties and playing shuffleboard. Her zest for life remained strong as she enjoyed reading, writing and socializing with family and friends. For the past four years she has resided at Sunrise Village. In addition to her husband Brian, Margaret was predeceased by two brothers, Dan and Fred, three sisters, Marion, Pearl, and Anne. Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Clarence (Pat), Jean (Andy) Prophet, Shirley (Dennis) Johnson, Lorne (Linda), Gerry (Cathy), eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, three sisters, Kaye Hillier, Dorothy Quinn, Lillian Oliver, one sister-in-law Judy Lackmanec as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret touched many lives and will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Her presence will be greatly missed. A funeral service was held on Saturday August 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose with Pastor Bev Swanson officiating. Interment will follow in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The Battle River Community Foundation or to the charity of one’s choice. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

In loving memory of a dear Husband, Dad, Pa and Great Pa who passed away on August 30, 2014 In a quiet country graveyard Where the gentle breezes blow Lies the one we loved so dearly Whom we lost one year ago What we would give his hand to clasp His patient face to see, To hear his voice, to see his smile As in the days that used to be. But some sweet day we’ll meet again Beyond the toil and strife And clasp each other’s hand once more In Heaven, that wonderful life. Lovingly remembered and so sadly missed, Ida and family

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING BYLAW 1360
UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM
Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. The UDF program began on July 9, 2015, starting with Zone A and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Emma Knapik at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca.

Servold sees the potential for Camrose ski hill Continued from page 14
“If this jump was modern in its present sized we could potentially be developing athletes to go to Canada Olympic Park, which has a high school right there at the venue,” he said. “It would be a feeder to the national team some day.” Servold said there is a precedent for obtaining funding for multi-sports parks.
“The Whistler ski jump complex was the very first Olympic complex to not include progressive children’s jumps along with the package. This was a political thing, saving money and so on, but the news is from there is that the local ski club formed to help organize the Olympics and provide volunteers is
actually building jumps at the Olympic venue and at Squamish and the Rotary club is the main backer. They obtained a grant from Vanoc (the Vancouver Olympics organizing committee) and ended up creating a multi sport park with ski jumps, a biathlon training range and rock climbing.”

AHS scores high on accreditation A strong commitment to patient safety, the positive impact of Strategic Clinical Networks, and a caring and highly-competent workforce were some of the strengths noted by Accreditation Canada in its report following the May 11 to 15 survey visit. Accreditation Canada’s final report shows Alberta Health Services met 92.4 per cent of all criteria and 93.5 per cent of their highpriority criteria. “The surveyors indicated this is a remarkable result, especially for an organization of our size,” said Vickie Kaminski, AHS president and chief executive officer. “These findings demonstrate that AHS is committed to providing quality and safe care to Albertans. I credit the hard work our staff and physicians do every day as the primary reason we were able to meet such a high-percentage of Accreditation Canada’s criteria.” In total, 106 AHS sites were part of the survey visit, and the following strengths were recognized by Accreditation Canada surveyors: commitment to patient safety; the positive impact of Strategic Clinical Networks; caring and highly-competent staff; strong inter-professional teams; clinical leadership; simulation and education programs; increased progress towards an integrated health system; organ and tissue transplant; hip and knee arthroplasty; assisted reproductive technology. Accreditation Canada surveyors also identified areas for system-wide improvements, including: falls prevention, medical reconciliation, access to mental health services, common technological platforms accessible to all staff and physicians, and further spread of evidencebased practices. “Staff, physicians and leaders are developing plans to address the unmet required organizational practices (ROP) and other areas for improvement,” said Dr. Verna Yiu, vicepresident quality and chief medical officer. “A recurring theme from the surveyors’ report is the need to consistently implement standardized practices across the organization, which we will continue to work toward.” The resulting progress in achieving ROP compliance will be reported to Accreditation Canada in October 2015 and 2016. Accreditation Canada standards allow health service organizations to
