Although it’s a national campaign, 100% of the money raised at Shoppers Drug Marts’ two Camrose locations will help women locally, in the annual

Growing Women’s Health campaign now through October 9th. Formerly known as the Tree of Life campaign, this major initiative has raised over $26 million for Canadian health charities since 2002. Partnering with Shoppers Drug Mart is Camrose Women’s Shelter Society. Funds raised will be dedicated to helping Camrose and area women improve their health in mind, body and spirit. You can participate by purchasing a “leaf” for a loonie, a “butterfly” for $5, an “apple” for $10 or a “bird” for $50. There are even opportunities to win Shoppers Optimum Points and direct $50,000 to local women’s health initiatives.

Camrose Open Door Harvest Gala will help shelter youth

UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER WORK BEE

Camrose Grateful Grannies members Lisa Alain, left, and Leslie Koehli turned in some interesting creations at an Ugly Christmas Sweater Work Bee following a pot luck supper at Messiah Lutheran Church Sept. 20. The Grateful Grannies are getting geared up for their Nov. 21 Christmas Market in support of all the grandmothers in Africa who are caring for children whose parents have died in the AIDS crisis, and felt that ugly Christmas sweaters would make an interesting addition to the wide assortment of baking, crafts and baking. For more information about the Grateful Grannies, feel free to contact Grateful Grannies Christmas Market chair Janet Galenza at 780-679-2676.

Top volunteers By Dan Jensen

Eloise and Carl Gotaas were named Centra Cam Vocational Training Association Volunteers of the Year Sept. 16. Eloise and Carl, along with their daughter, Sharon, who is a Centra Cam employee, have been involved with the association for close to 27 years. “They help with many events, including our casinos and the golf tournament, sell and buy tickets, and supply baked goods,” said Centra Cam executive director Roxanna Skjonsberg. “The best thing of all is they are always willing to help at the next event. They attend a lot of community events, namely a lot of hockey games, and they are always advocating for us.” Skjonsberg thanked Carl and Eloise for “being there when we can use the extra four hands.”

By Murray Green A single fundraising night could change the lives of many youth within the community. The Open Door Harvest Gala is planned for Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Norsemen Inn. It is an alcohol free, all ages event. “The purpose of the event is to have fun and to create a sense of hope and impact. It is also a fundraiser for youth shelter and support services provided by the Open Door,” said Randal Nickel, executive director of the Open Door. Last year, the event raised $15,500 to support the programs and housing shelter that the Open Door offers to those who have no where else to turn. The funds were raised through sponsors, tickets, auctions and donations. “Rapid Fire Theatre Improv group is coming again to provide a great comedy experience,” said Nickel. “Limited tickets are still available at the Open Door.” Emcee David Samm and auctioneer Otto Streberg will be helping to ensure the evening is a celebration. Homelessness can come in many forms. It doesn’t have to be someone sleeping in a box in an empty lot downtown, or in a bank entry way. It can be a youth couch surfing who doesn’t have a dependable place to sleep at night. They may have a house, but it may not be safe enough for them to call home. The gala event kicks off at 6 p.m. with mocktails and a salad bar, followed by dinner, silent and live auctions, and the entertainment. The Open Door doesn’t have consistent grant funding for shelter services; these funds will go towards overnight and weekend staffing, facility costs, food, blankets and hygiene supplies. The Open Door provides emergency housing for young adults up to age 24. They also offer professional counselling and a range of outreach supports. The Open Door provided services to about 150 youth, including 47 youth who received temporary housing. The facility, formerly Gardner College, has eight beds as well as four one-bedroom apartments for longer stays. Tickets to the harvest gala are available online at www. camroseopendoor.com or in person at the Gateway Centre at 4825-51 Street. Auction items, or sponsors for the Harvest Gala costs are gratefully accepted.

Taxi subsidy program launched By Dan Jensen

The Camrose trial taxi subsidy program is ready to go. The City of Camrose has ordered and received tokens valued at $4 that the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, Battle River School Division Learning Together program and Camrose Women’s Shelter will be distributing to students or clients who are in need of subsidized transportation. “The distributors are given the discretion to determine if those requesting the tokens are in need of assistance via subsidized transportation costs,” said a report presented to Camrose City council Sept. 8. The recipients will be allowed to use one token for each trip in taxis operated by either Armand’s Cabs, Rose City Taxi or Lakeside Taxi. Taxi drivers will be able to redeem the tokens at Vision Credit Union. “Taxi drivers will present tokens, a completed redemption form and their laminated City of Camrose taxi driver permit card at Vision Credit Union’s

downtown branch,” said the report. “Staff will ask to view the driver’s motor vehicle operator’s licence to establish positive identification. Information on their licence will be compared with information on the withdrawal form and permit card.” The tokens will be retrieved from Vision Credit Union by the Camrose Transit Advisory Committee (CTAC)on a weekly basis so they can be put back into circulation. The number of organizations that will be participating in the program will be expanded to include PACE Outreach School, addictions and Mental Health, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Camrose Open Door, Camrose Association for Community Living, Public Health Alberta Health Services and Camrose Neighbor Aid Center once the established process is running smoothly. “We want to start quite small, so any issues that might arise with taxi companies of handing (tokens) out can be resolved before we do a massive handout,” said Yvonne Allan, who will

be managing the program for CTAC. “There are a lot of organizations that haven’t been approached and perhaps the biggest of those is the Bethany Group.” Allan will be asking organizations that are involved with the program to provide information on the number of tokens they have given out, as well as the postal codes, so that she can do future planning and identify high use areas. The trial program will be carried out within the City’s 2015 budget allocation of $52,000 for public transit. The expenditures to date total less than $4,000. “Ultimate expenditures can be controlled by the number of tokens issued and it is anticipated that most of the budget will be spent,” said CTAC chair Tony Hladun. Information gathered by CTAC a year ago indicates that a subsidized transportation program in a city the size of Camrose should expect to provide 20,000 rides per year. “In Peace River when they did the taxi system they actually had more

demand than normal, so it is possible that it could go above 30,000,” said Hladun. “The 10,000 (tokens) that we budgeted for these three or four months (September to December) is about 30,000 for an entire year.” Hladun explained it is easier for private companies in other communities that operate school buses to add a private bus service. “The problem in Camrose is that the school district is doing the busing,” he said. “I spoke to Allen Hay who did the school bus service before and he said he could do it, but it would be costly to do it just for a transit system.” CTAC will present an update to council at the end of October on how the trial system is progressing. A final report will be brought to council after completion of the trial period on Dec. 31. “Going forward, based on the four-month trial, the City will need to decide what to do for 2016,” said Hladun. “If the program were to continue in its present form for 2016 the operating budget should be $150,000.”

Hospice Society plans workshop By Dan Jensen

Find it hard trying to come up with the words to say to someone who is dying? The Hospice Society of Camrose and District wants to help. The Society will be hosting a one-day workshop for professionals, volunteers and caregivers entitled Being with the Dying: Care, Communication and Compassion at the Norsemen Inn Thursday, Oct. 1. “It’s going to address how we can talk to people who are dying, how we can answer some of those tough questions, and how we can instill hope,” said Hospice Society board member Pam Cummer. The conference will feature two keynote speakers who are well known in the world of palliative care and have addressed many workshops throughout the province. Dr. Shane Sinclair, who holds a Cancer Care Research Professorship in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary and focuses on psychoso-

cial and spiritual issues, including compassion within oncology and palliative care, will speak on Compassion: Essential Ingredient in Palliative Care. Dr. Cheryl Nekolaiichuk, a counselling psychologist on the Tertiar Palliative Care Unit at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and professor in the Division of Palliative Medicine, Department of Oncology, University of Alberta, will speak on Sharing Hopeful Moments: Supporting Patients and Families on their Palliative Care Journey. The conference will also feature morning and afternoon break out sessions on Compassion Fatigue (Rev. Bill Harder), Spiritual Care at the End of Life (Dr. Shane Sinclair), Conversations that Matter (Colette Howery and Pam Cummer), Self Care (Rev. Bill Harder), Spiritual Dimensions of Death and Dying (David Goa) and Self Care through Yoga and Nutrition (Ravidass). “People will be able to choose one session in the

morning and one in the afternoon,” said Cummer. The conference is the first to be put on by the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. “The members of the Society’s educational committee have been involved in different kinds of workshops in their professional careers, but this is will be the first one for us to host,” said Cummer. “We have always known from our experience with providing training that the subjects that are going to be addressed are ones that a lot of people want to know more about. There are clinically based conferences, but this one covers quite a broad spectrum.” The conference is being funded by a grant from the Battle River Community Foundation. “It’s a way for us to provide education to the community,” said Cummer. Information on how to register may be obtained by visiting www.camrosehospice.org or by calling 780608-0435.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Hold the tension, hold the silence When I returned to school when I was in my fifties, one of my teachers, Don Swartz, taught us to “hold the tension.” He began his career as a mechanical engineer, and grew into one of the most skilled group facilitators and trainers that I have ever met. One reason might have been that he knew how mechanical and physical things worked – the steps it takes to shape metal into component parts and processes to create a vehicle that moves ahead or a machine that gets work done more efficiently than human labour. He could also break down the steps it takes for groups of people to go from chaos, confusion and disagreement into an ability to move ahead and get work done. One of his mantras was “hold the tension.” Often when a group of people have been talking and trying to figure something out, or wrangling over a decision, there is a lull in the conversation, and high tension. For some of us, there is a temptation to do something to break the tension – say something funny or suggest a break. Don Swartz advised us to “hold the tension” – preferably with silence. Twenty years later, I have now experienced many times when – as Don suggested – holding the tension, holding the silence, created space for a breakthrough to occur. If we dissipate the tension too soon, we also dissipate the opportunity for a breakthrough. *** I’ve just returned from a retreat experience in which we spent almost half our time in silence. Certainly there was instruction and explanation and conversation. But our most powerful times were in silence. In silence, sometimes the chatter in my mind stops and there is space for a deeper wisdom to be heard. And not just heard but experienced. In silence, I can begin to feel subtle shifts and signals in my body, my emotions and my thoughts. I can begin to tell the difference between wisdom and mental noise. At the retreat, when someone was speaking in the group, we were encouraged not to comment or respond, but simply to listen deeply and silently. In the presence of that supportive silence, many of us had breakthrough understandings. That would not have happened if others had been talking – trying to “help” us with the noise of their words. *** Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist who experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain in 1996. In My Stroke of Insight, she tells the story of what she experienced while having a stroke. Because of her expertise, she actually knew exactly what was happening in her brain. Essentially her entire left brain shut down. It took eight gruelling years to recover her abilities to move, speak, eat and so on. One of the many profound things she talks about in her book is the healing power of silence. In a section of advice for caregivers, she talks of how excruciating noise was for her, how noise scrambled up her fragile recovering brain, how noise was actually physically painful. I flashed back to experiences in hospitals, medical clinics and once in an ambulance – whether as a patient, family member or friend – and thought how her message of the healing power of silence would be a great benefit to all medical professions and facilities. *** Yesterday I spent a good portion of the day in airports and on a plane – non-stop noise. Ironically, while writing this, I got up to shut the window against the sound of a siren, intended to help an emergency vehicle move through city traffic. We live in noise. Sometimes I think we crave noise. We even carry noise with us. We fend off silence – and, perhaps, fend off hearing the wisdom and healing that could be available to us in silence. I’m going to be silent now! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

On Sept. 3, within our province, the inhalation of the general populous’ breath sucked the wind out of the sails of the Notley NDP(s). While Calgarians demonstrated a flaming disregard for the withering PC dynasty as it slowly shifts into the ephemeral world and graveyard of past provincial political parties. This by-election appears as a seismic shift in the coming political spectrum as the populous adjusts its thoughts in search of the next government that will set the direction in the province for what may be the next several decades. Without even waiting for the very first NDP budget, Calgarians have turned away from the government with indifference and unbelief. Albertans are rousing to the futility of the NDP ideology to govern in a world of pragmatic reality, where families are raised and bills paid, where parents desire to give their children every opportunity they can afford. But these opportunities dwindle as jobs are cut and taxes are

raised and families stretch to the breaking point. The NDP currently have the economic acumen of a candy bar vending machine, handing out treats and sweets to their friends without regard nor understanding of the repercussion and devastation this will bring our province. These NDP MLAs for the most part have neither run a business of any kind nor do they have a rudimentary understanding of the dynamics it takes to make a business work. Thus, their fixation on their ideological mantra is understandable, for most of the ND caucus knows nothing else, and it is one way to keep the novelties from running loose. This blind allegiance to NDP dogma demonstrates our need for the common sense policy of the Wildrose and will become increasingly apparent to even ardent NDP supporters over the next four years. The catch phrase “Buyer’s Remorse” is not just a political quip, but a growing fear within the economic heart of the province. The bright side in all this is that there are only 1,220 more sleeps till we can find satisfactory relief. Rob Johnson, Daysland Misleading ads

I have just seen the latest attack ad unleashed by the Harper Conservatives. It begins with a smug individual explaining that “We came out of the last recession [2008] faster and stronger than other countries. That was no accident. That was leadership.” Quite true, and imagine what would have happened had Canada’s banking sys-

tem not been protected by regulations. The ad claims that Prime Minister Harper was responsible for the strong regulation that characterized the Canadian banking system at the time of the subprime mortgage crisis that devastated the world’s financial system. This is nonsense. If you Google “Harper” and “bank deregulation” you will see a large number of Canadian newspaper articles that reported that Prime Minister Harper was the strongest proponent of financial deregulation – precisely what fatally weakened the US financial system. It was only due to the fact that parliamentary committees were delaying passage of his legislation to remove these regulations that Canada was not equally impacted by the financial crisis. We are indeed lucky that he did not have time to dismantle the system before the crisis hit. Of course, how convenient for the Prime Minister to change his tune in light of the world crisis and to announce that it was Canada’s, ergo his, strong financial regulation that protected the Canadian economy. It is unfortunate that in their efforts to reduce the ease with which Canadians can vote, by imposing regulations that we have never needed before, the Conservatives saw no need to impose a certain level of regulation concerning truth and misleading statements in political advertising. I am no fan of attack ads in the first place, but there should at least be some regulation in place (ironically enough), that prevents ads from intending to mislead, to put it tactfully. Expressive Arts Experience for Women at Arts Centre By Dan Jensen

Women who have experienced trauma or abuse and wish to gain greater clarity about the challenges they face will benefit from an Expressive Arts Experience for Women set to be offered at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre in Camrose Oct. 6 to Dec. 1. Expressive Arts Experience for Women focuses on helping women create, reflect and learn about themselves, not on the mastery of the art form of the finished product. “It approaches trauma from a different perspective, which adds a lot of richness to the women’s experience and a new opportunity for healing,” explained Sheralyn Dobos, from the Family Violence Action Society, which, along with Camrose Arts Society, is the program’s host. The program has run before with glowing reviews. “It gave me time to reflect about how I feel about what has happened to me,” said one former participant. Expressive Arts Experience for Women facilitator Diane McLaren believes that arts-based exploration bypasses the thinking mind and reveals more of

Family Violence Action Society program director Sheralyn Dobos, Camrose arts director Jane Cherry-Lemire and Expressive Arts for Women facilitator Diane McLaren with an example of a kind of work that will be produced in the program.

what the deeper self wants to express. “For women who find trauma and abuse difficult to talk about, this is another way to approach it,” she said. The program will use various arts mediums, from clay, which will help the women create something very personal to

themselves, and expressive movements, to collage and pastels. The idea is that spontaneous creation without pre-planning often helps to expose regressed psychological patterns which may be holding one back. “Spontaneous art is wider than words and can invite growth steps that

you might not have been able to conceive of in your thinking mind or articulate through words,” said McLaren. “Sometimes what happens with our problems, as well as trauma and abuse, is that we just think about them a lot. If you have a problem you think about it, think about it, think about it, and you are no further ahead because you keep thinking about it the same way all the time, which gets you nowhere. I remember one lady telling me that she felt like a brain on legs, that she was just walking around and thinking all the time. When you are creating art and you are doing movement with your body, you start to feel things in your body and it helps you get back into your body and feel grounded.” Expressive Arts Experience for Women participants do not have to have any art experience. “We don’t want people thinking they can’t do it because they have no arts experience,” said Camrose arts director Jane CherryLemire. “We don’t want people to feel intimidated by that.” Cherry-Lemire saw first hand how the arts can provide a release from trauma 20 years ago when she created a painting that

is still on display at Augustana. “I was able to work through the shame that I felt from my trauma when I did my art piece,” she said. “I was willing to say well, you know this is me, and I am okay.” The program was started after women in the Family Violence Action Society’s Choices program expressed a need for more support. “It seemed like a very good fit with what we were already offering,” said Dobos. After seeing the success of the first two programs, McLaren approached Dobos about offering it to women who were dealing with traumas not related to family violence. “She talked to her board about expanding it so that other women could benefit as well,” said McLaren. “Then we approached Jane because we thought that using art as a way of healing was a good match for the Camrose Arts Society.” The program requires that women pre-register and submit to an interview to ensure that it is a good fit for them. Registration information may be obtained by calling Sheralyn at 780-672-0141 or Diane at 780-672-2564.

Round Hill proceeds with Harvest Show and Shine By Murray Green

The third annual Round Hill Harvest Show and Shine was postponed, not cancelled. The event was rained out on Sunday, Sept. 6 and has been moved to Sunday, Oct. 4. “We will be proceeding with the car show and shine including the harvest portion,” explained organizer Allen Tomaszewski. The Round Hill and District Agricultural Society is hosting its yearly event at the agricultural grounds near the ball diamonds and campground. “The show and shine is open to all pre-90s vehicles. We changed to pre-90s instead of pre-80s because it allows vehicles 25 years and older to enter. A vehicle can be registered a classic after 25 years, so it made sense to include 80s vehicles. We had a lot to of requests to include them as well,” said Tomaszewski. “Every year our event is growing. We had 59 vehicles in our first show and last year we had 69. It depends on the weather, but we are hoping for more this year. I remember our first year, I went into Round Hill and couldn’t

see Main Street because it was so foggy. I thought it was going to be a wreck, but it cleared off and it turned out to be a great day.” Awards are presented in classic, pick-ups, rat rods, muscle cars and bone wagon categories. “The show is open and

we even take works in progress,” said Allen. “The event brings a lot of people into Round Hill and it begins with a pancake breakfast.” The pancake breakfast starts the day from 9 to 11 a.m. with registration held from 9 a.m. to noon. The car show is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and

door prizes will begin at 1:30 p.m. An awards presentation will be held at 3 p.m. and several awards will be presented. The threshing demonstration is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. A stooking contest begins at 2 p.m. for all ages. “We have several organizations helping out to put

the show on,” said Allen. “In a community like Round Hill, everyone pitches in and helps to make it a success.” Refreshments and food will be available during the event. For more information on the event contact Allen at 780-672-6104.

NDP candidate launches campaign

James Oliver Severson April 10, 1940 – September 11, 2015

Photo submitted Katherine Swampy, Bruce Hinkley, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose, and Fritz Bitz, NDP candidate for Edmonton-Wetaskiwin

Battle River-Crowfoot NDP candidate Katherine Swampy addressed a cheery crowd of supporters at her campaign launch in Camrose Sept. 11. “I’m confident Katherine will take her vast public service experience and apply her persistence, top-notch leadership skills, and integrity to represent this riding well” stated Bruce Hinkley, newly elected MLA for WetaskiwinCamrose in his introduction of Katherine. Fritz Bitz, neighbouring NDP candidate for EdmontonWetaskiwin, attended the launch to show her support for Katherine as well. Katherine is committed to giving back to the community, by working to improve educational experiences for Indig-

enous post-secondary students and mentoring young women and girls in traditional customs. She served on various committees while attending U of A’s Augustana Campus, and has worked to ensure fair elections for the Samson Cree Nation. Katherine was honoured to receive the Onesimus Award for her on-campus leadership, and the Margaret Brine Graduate Scholarship for Women, awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women. Katherine has worked as a tax officer for Canada Revenue Agency, as well as a census enumerator for Statistics Canada. She is ready to embark on this new challenge after recently completing her BA in Economics from the

University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus. “I’m honoured to represent the NDP here in Battle River -Crowfoot,” said Katherine. “I plan to travel across this district to listen to what you want and be your voice to bring your concerns to Ottawa. This election is about change. Tom Mulcair has a solid plan with the right priorities for communities in Battle RiverCrowfoot, including reducing the small business tax to help local businesses grow and create good jobs – and he has the experience needed to replace Stephen Harper. “I really understand families’ priorities and experience daily the joys and struggles of balancing work, family, and volunteer commitments while raising five children.”

James was born on April 10, 1940 and went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 11, 2015 at the age of 75 after a long battle with dementia. James was born at St. Mary’s Hospital and remained in the Camrose area for many years. He went to school in Armena and Kingman. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church north of Camrose, where he was baptized and confirmed. He farmed with his dad, as well as worked at the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool. In 1969, he married Doris (Olson) and, after a short time living on the farm, they moved to Calgary where Jim was employed with Alpha Dairies. Kendall and Keith were born in Calgary. In 1976, the move back to Camrose happened and James began a new career with Hudson’s Bay. Colin was born in 1979, and now James had “my three sons”. James was employed for 25 years with The Bay. James was predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Georgina Severson. He is survived by his wife Doris; three sons Kendall (Merlee), Keith (Ainsley) and Colin (Natalie); and eight grandchildren Robin, Casey, Randi, Jamie, Levi, Bailey, Roxanne and Vanessa. He is also survived by two sisters Lorna (Mel) Klassen and Nellie (Morley) McArthur; as well as sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. from First Baptist Church, Camrose with Pastor Greg Pietz and Roger Olson officiating. Interment has taken place in the Bethlehem Cemetery north of Camrose. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Bethlehem Cemetery Fund or to the Resurrection Church Building Fund. Chamber seeks input on minimum wage increase By Dan Jensen

The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce is seeking input from local businesses on how they see themselves being affected by proposed increases in the minimum wage. “We want to know if it is going to cause them to let go of some of their newer employers, hold off on hiring new employees,” said Chamber president Tanya Fox. “We also want to know how many will feel the impact and how many are up around the minimum wage mark already.” Input received by the Chamber so far has indicated that the minimum wage would be harmful. “We have received some major hits over the past year in the oilfield and agriculture and there are a number of variables that have to be considered,” said Fox. “We need to review what is happening with the economy right now to see if increasing the wage is still a viable option.” The Alberta Chambers of Commerce is recommend-

ing the government assess the minimum wage annually and only revise by a percentage equal to the per cent change in the Alberta Consumer Price Index, provide a minimum of six months’ notice of any minimum wage changes implemented, and establish an ongoing research program for data and information gathering and its subsequent analysis to address policy-relevant minimum wage issues, as well as alternative poverty reduction strategies. Alberta Chambers of Commerce president and CEO Ken Kobly feels if the provincial governmnent’s goal is to reduce poverty, a higher minimum wage is not the most effective approach. “It puts the burden solely on the backs of businesses and does not result in an additional $9,600 for minimum wage earners,” said Kolby. “We have proposed that alternative solutions, which include more moderate wage increases, along with increased gov-

ernment supports for lowwage earners through the Alberta Family Employment Benefit, an existing program, would help keep more money in the pockets of these individuals while sharing the burden for their well-being among everyone. This also would not enrich the federal government.” The input received from the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce will be forwarded to the Alberta Chambers to support its minimum wage policy, and from there to the provincial government. “We will present it to the government and say this is what the people are asking for, these are what their fears are, and see if we can get any change,” said Fox. “We want to let the government know that we have a voice, whichever way it is they are planning to go.” Business awards The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the small business of the year, business excellence of

the year, community spirit, ambassador of the year, franchise business of the year, home based business of the year, customer service employee of the year and Alberta Works employer of choice awards that will be handed out at its 31st annual “Puttin’ on the Ritz” small business event Oct. 22. The deadline for emailing of faxing entries to the Chamber of Commerce office (admin@camrosechamber. ca or 780-672-1069) is Oct. 2. Award recipients will be chosen by the Chamber small business week committe, the decision of which will be final. “You can nominate yourself; it is not tacky,” said Chamber president Tanya Fox. The small business of the year award, which is open to businesses with up to 25 employees, is presented to businesses which have made significant achievements within the last three years, shown sustained financial performance, been involved in business and/ or professional associations

and community activities, and demonstrated high level of customer service excellence. Recipients over the last three years have included Cloud 9 Day Spas, Burgar Funeral Home and Interiors on Main. The home based business of the year award is presented to businesses with up to three employees. The Camrose ambassador of the year award is presented to someone who tirelessly volunteers his or her time and efforts in promoting Camrose and surrounding areas. Past recipients have included Trevor Vinet, Berdie Fowler, Boris Rybalka, Kevin Gurr, Norm Mayer and Bob Prestage. The community spirit award is presented to an organization or business whose contributions to and promotion of the community distinguish it from its peers. Past award recipients have included the Rotary Club of Camrose, Battle River Community Foundation, Camrose Open Door Association and Central Agencies.

Beer Festival offers samples and music The Camrose International Beer Festival is a great event for those who want to sample several different types of beer and listen to live music at the Bailey Theatre, Oct. 3. The Beer Festival will have a United Kingdom and Ireland theme for the beer and the music. The event, hosted by Downtown Camrose as a fundraiser for special projects, includes a beer seminar from 4 to 5:30 p.m. “The Beer 101 seminar will include presentations from the Norsemen Brewing Company (Sean Wilms and Ryan Stang) and Olds College brewmaster David Mozel. The Norsemen will talk about the ingredients that are used in the brewing process. David will share the different beer styles and the various tastes,” explained Downtown Camrose event co-chair Jeff McDevitt. “You can learn about your favourite beer and where the ingredients come from They will explain the difference between craft beers and the macro beers from the big companies.” Deb Thompson is also the co-chair of the Beer Festival. “We had previously held an Octoberfest, but there are other Octoberfests out there and we wanted to do something a little different. The craft industry is gaining popularity, so this is something different. It will be a fun event,” shared McDevitt. “We will be bringing a cask of beer and explaining the difference between craft beer and cast beer,” said Sean Wilms, of Norsemen Brewing. “We will take 40 litres of our regular Longship Lager beer and add some hops, spices and herbs. We will add ingredients to give it a different flavour and seal it in an aluminum barrel cask. At the event we will uncork and serve it. It won’t be chilled, so you will be able to really taste the ingredients.” The main event begins at 6:45 p.m. with the beer samples and music by three groups. There will be about 12 different varieties of beer at the long bar. McDevitt is expecting a full house of 150 people. “Money raised will go towards downtown revitalization projects. We don’t have all the projects planned, but we’ve talked about additional signage and improving walkability,” said McDevitt. “This event will be a part of receiving funding to go ahead with those types of projects.” Continued on page 23

Dungarees play at local Culture days By Murray Green

The Dungarees are playing at the Bailey Theatre on Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. during Alberta Culture Days and are hosted by the Camrose Arts Society. Last week it was reported that the Dungarees were performing on Sept. 26, but they are on the Bailey Theatre stage on Friday, Sept. 25 and the John Welsh Band will be playing on Saturday, Sept. 26. The Dungarees stand out as a five-man band, dedicated to their love of traditional, high energy country music. Their album Ain’t Through Being Happy Yet, produced by multiple CCMA winner, Bart McKay, was released last year with success. The Dungarees have performed at some of the biggest country festivals in Canada, including Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, and Dauphin CountryFest. They opened

for Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton at the Saddledome during the Calgary Stampede. In the fall they will open for Miranda Lambert. Although the band is considered country and roots, they sing everything from Kim Mitchell to Queen, as well as their own music. All five members of this traditional country music outfit are essential players in a number of different national and international recording artist bands, as well as their own original bands (Robb Angus in The Wheat Pool, James Murdoch of Adam Gregory Band and his solo project, and Darrek Anderson of The Guaranteed), or essential members in others (Ben Shillabeer in The Boom Chucka Boys, Kiron Jhass in The Uncas). Tickets are available, at no charge, at the Bailey Box Office or Chuck McLean Arts Centre.

For Those About to Vote

When it comes to electoral politics, Canadian parties and citizens are coasting: they are content with governments that take care of political tasks and problems for them, without addressing the sense of injustice or fatigue that seems to be mounting toward all parties. Over the last few elections, we have been content with about 60% of the population voting for one of the shopping lists of policies put together by Jérôme Melançon, the parties. Political Studies and Philosophy, The voter turnout is likeAugustana Campus, ly to rise this time around, as University of Alberta it is often the case when the outcome of an election is difficult to predict. However, if the Conservatives lose their majority in Parliament, it will not be because of enthusiasm for another party. If anything, it will be fatigue or anger that might defeat the Conservative Party. We are not likely to get a vision for political life either: the NDP and the Reform Party proposed their own for many years, but both parties have abandoned them to take up a piecemeal approach and to focus on the personality of their leaders. Without a vision, we know what parties will do, but not how they will do it and not what their actions will mean for us. What happens when new issues arise that weren’t part of the parties’ platforms? In this context of persistent disappointment with electoral politics, I am asking myself whether it is worth it for me to be voting at all. I am not talking about the effort: I put more effort into getting take-out or taking my kids to the park than I do into the actual act of voting. I am talking about what happens when I vote. It’s often said that those who don’t vote don’t get to complain. But I’d like to turn that common saying around: those who vote accept the results no matter what they may be, and they give a party and its leader the right to govern them for a few years, no matter who they had chosen on their ballot. In other words, Albertans who voted for the PC or the Wildrose Party and who are now mad at seeing the NDP as their provincial government did, in fact, agree to be governed by the NDP. So did the MLAs who are attacking the NDP continuously, for that matter. After all, they would want others to respect the election results if their choice had received the most votes. So what happens when I vote? Let me rephrase this question along three lines of thought: First, when did I agree to be governed at all? The electoral and political system in place was created almost 150 years ago and has not changed drastically since then – and even in 1867 and in 1982, when the Constitution was created and modified, no one was asked. What kind of relationship do I have with the government, then? How can it ever be my government, even if I voted for it? Second, do I get to take part in my own self-government? Will anything I have to say or suggest about how to define rules and pay for how we live together make a difference to what the parties think? Will I be consulted when decisions are made that affect my life? Is the fact of being elected by the most votes (and not by the majority) sufficient for a government to be considered democratic? Third, are my concerns addressed? The campaign only focuses on the issues parties think will get them elected. As a result, problems that millions of Canadians face are simply ignored – poverty, the fact that women are still paid less than men, the rights and safety of transgender teenagers, the lack of representation for racialized Canadians in political institutions, the economic conditions that made the drought so terrible for farmers this year, just to give a few examples. We all know our own concerns; are we voting for them to be addressed? These questions are different than those we’re asked to consider by the parties campaigning for our vote and by the candidates in our riding. They have to do with the meaning of our vote, with what they will do with these votes, and what will be done to us, for us, in our name. If we at least consider them, maybe we can make sure that we’ll do more than only coast, and have enough power to climb up the hills that appear on every road.

Many young people, and adolescents in particular, desire to look older. But those desires often shift as men and women reach middle age, at which time looking younger becomes a priority. When wrinkles crop up or laugh lines appear, people are quick to run out and find methods to wipe away the years. Fortunately for adults, there are plenty of ways to create more youthful looks when Father Time starts catching up. • Gel Fingers

BAILEY HARVEST FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Bailey Harvest Fundraising Festival was a huge success with Danny Hooper as the master of ceremonies on Sept. 12. Comedian Ken Valgardson, left, provided plenty of laughs and Charlie Stuart, top, put in his bid for the Edmonton Oilers sweater with Connor McDavid’s name on it. Although the tallies are not added up yet, it looks like the event met or exceeded last year’s totals. The highlight of the night was the sponsorship of Grade 12 prom packages that will go to Pace School students next spring.

Hospice Society moves forward with home project Submitted In 2011 the Hospice Society of Camrose and District was formed to provide compassionate care for the dying and their loved ones. This month, the society is pleased to announce it is moving forward with its Hospice Home project. Background With your help individuals, their families and caregivers, living within the catchment area of the Hospice Society of Camrose and District, will have the support they need to face the life changing effects of a palliative diagnosis. Our Hospice Home will: support individuals, their families and care givers to overcome the emotional, physical, spiritual and practical challenges of a palliative diagnosis and end of life care; compliment medical treatment and healthcare services currently available by filling essential gaps – all at minimal to no cost for individuals, families and caregivers; and be a place where people can connect with others who know what they are going through because they have been there themselves. Our Hospice Home will also: improve quality of life while also reducing costs to the medical system (most people need more than treatment, they need help to heal the body, mind, and

spirit from the crisis that often comes with a palliative diagnosis); be a warm, welcoming home-like environment where individuals are supported to live well during and beyond their palliative diagnosis as well as supporting those involved with end of life care; be operated by professionals and trained volunteers – who want to help others through their palliative and end of life care journey; and be open to any with a palliative diagnosis, at any stage, along with their family members and care givers. Vision Our Hospice Home will provide a comprehensive range of palliative and end of life care supports, resources and programs for individuals and their families, caregivers so they can develop the skills and strategies to improve their quality of life during and beyond the palliative diagnosis and end of life care. Goals include: improving quality of life by reducing the distress, fear and isolation experienced by a palliative diagnosis and end of life care; helping individuals with a palliative diagnosis, along with their family and caregivers to understand and live well; and improving communications with family, care givers, healthcare teams, co-workers and friends

working towards achieving wholeness as they navigate the palliative and end of life journey. Inviting home Our Hospice Home will be a warm and inviting, home-like building that strives to create welcoming spaces – distinct from the hospital and clinics. The emphasis is on the person, not on the illness. We want people who come to our Hospice Home to feel safe and valued. Our Hospice Home will be centrallylocated, with easy access and parking. It will have bright windows and open spaces. Initially areas within our Hospice Home will include: self-serve café/ lounge/kitchen; multipurpose/exercise room; resource library; presentation and peer support rooms; and respite rooms (out of town family members and/or care givers). Programs and Services Once built our Hospice Home will offer a wide range of programs, services and supports. This will include: one-to-one programming/support; group programming/support; and education, information and resources for patients, family members, caregivers, bereaved; and healthcare providers. Programs will be offered at minimal cost or free to all individuals, fam-

ily members and caregivers with a palliative diagnosis or supporting end of life care. All programs will be evidence based and instructed by certified facilitators. Volunteers Our Hospice Home will require a number of volunteers to help in the following areas: volunteer coordination, fundraising, administration, peer support, front desk, support group facilitators, transportation, and events and outreach. Long Term Goal The Hospice Society of Camrose and District will have “End of Life” rooms in our Hospice Home that would be available for residents within the society’s catchment area, during their final days. This would be an alternative to hospital admission and the care would be based on patient need. There will be 24/7 support coverage. Families and caregivers would be encouraged and welcomed to participate in the care of the patient at the Hospice House. This requires further collaboration with local healthcare and community stakeholders and we are anxious to begin this process. Donate The Hospice Home will be dependent on the generous support of community donors and volunteers to

fulfill its mission. There are many ways to support our Hospice Home including: a donation in your own name to support our Hospice Home; a gift in memory of a friend or loved one; a special “in honour of” gift to commemorate a special occasion; a financial investment such as an endowment gift; a virtual gift for the person who seems to have everything; and monthly giving in support of our Hospice Home throughout the year. Corporate Partners Our Hospice Home will also rely on the support of corporate sponsors. Becoming one of our charity sponsors can bring lasting benefits including: enhancing your organization’s image in the community as a good corporate citizen; improving your organization’s credibility as a socially responsible company; improving employee motivation, morale and team relationships due to their involvement in charity projects; giving your organization and employees the opportunity to have a tangible role in helping to sustain and improve palliative and end of life care in the Hospice Society Camrose and District catchment area; and improving awareness of your organization amongst supporters and stakeholders of our Hospice Home.

Beer Festival at Bailey Continued from page 16

The Bailey stage will be filled with talented local performers. Cory Vanderjagt and Jordan Leden (Bailey Buckaroos) will open the entertainment with an acoustic mix of music with a splash of beer, pop and folk songs from the featured countries. After the cask opening, the Olson Brothers (Steve and Leif) take the stage with a sound similar to Chet Atkins and Merle Travis. They will also add some

Irish and English themes into their set. The headliner for the event will be the band Glove Box, which has both Camrose and Edmonton members. They are a pop and rock band that will feature a set of British invasion and Irish music to which people can dance. A ticket to the event includes the seminar, snacks, glass of task beer, three beer samples, silent auction and the entertainment.

Jayla Kucy earns her second trip to Augusta National

Jayla Kucy chips onto the green to win the semifinals of the Drive Chip Putt championships to earn a trip to the finals.

By Murray Green Camrose golfer Jayla Kucy had a great day of golf at the Drive Chip and Putt semifinals in Washington State Sept. 12. For the second straight year, Jayla earned herself a trip to Augusta, Georgia, where, on April 3, 2016, she will play on the course that hosts the Master’s Golf Tournament. Although the Grade 4 student is still only nine years old, she competed in the girls’ 10 and 11 category. She scored 123 points in the drive, chip and putt events to become the overall champion. Her closest opponent netted 105 points. Jayla shot well in all three categories at Chambers Bay (the home of the US Open), but her excellence in chipping put her score out of reach for the other older golfers “I like chipping the best,” said Jayla, prior to her trip last year. Jayla’s father, Joe, is proud of his daughter’s accomplishment.

“Considering she competed against girls who were almost 12, two years older than her, it was almost overwhelming that she scored that much higher than the other girls at the semifinals,” he said. The age is based on the age of the competitors next April. “She played very well and worked very hard. Her journey started in Woodburn, Oregon, where she placed in a tie for third. She squeaked in because her last putt counted as the tie-breaker and she qualified for the sub regionals because the top three out of the 20 golfers moved on,” Joe explained. “Sub regionals were held at Mariweather National Golf Course (west of Portland) where she won outright convincingly to qualify for the regionals at the US Open course.” The family is excited to visit Augusta again. “She has played in 17 golf tournaments as an

underage in the girls 14 and under division so that has prepared her. Jayla said she is not going to be as nervous this time because she has been there before. She is going with a different mentality and is excited about the opportunity,” said Joe. “She is the only girl from western Canada to qualify so far. There are three more qualifying tournaments left. Seven out of the top 10 spots have been determined.” Last year, Jayla qualified in Park City, Utah to earn a trip to the North American championships. The regional finals included ten girls from the northwestern states of Washington, Arizona, Oregon, Wyoming, Utah as well as western Canada. All 10 players were representing their sub regions. Jayla started entering golf tournaments at age five and won the Alberta Junior Linkster in Red Deer on May 29, 2011.

Vikings tie Huskies in women’s soccer will be held Sept. 26 and 27 at the Innisfail Golf Club, with the Vikings entered. The ACAC championships will be held Oct. 3 and 4 at the Desert Blume Golf Club in Medicine Hat. The nationals are slated for Oct. 13 to 16 at the Chilliwack Golf Club in British Columbia.

By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings women’s soccer team scored in the first half and earned a 1-1 tie with the Keyano Huskies on Sept. 12 in regular season play. Coach Paul Stone’s crew dominated the game in the opening half and Tara Berger finally gave the Vikings the lead prior to the break. The Huskies fought back in the second half with a goal from Jolene Bradley. Ashley Chaput was strong in goal for Augustana. The Vikings lost 4-0 to NAIT in a contest that saw them play well in the first half. NAIT has won three out of the last four ACAC crowns, so coach Stone noted his team stayed with them for the most part. The men dropped a 5-0 game to NAIT and a 3-0 contest to Keyano as they continue to look for more offence. Augustana hosts NAIT with games at noon and 2 p.m. on Sept. 26. The Vikings also host Concordia on Oct. 3 with games at 2 and 4 p.m. Hockey

The Augustana Vikings hockey team edged MacEwan Griffins 3-2 in exhibition play on Sept. 11. The 51st Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regular season begins on Sept. 25 in the EnCana Arena against SAIT.

Basketball

The Vikings open at home on Oct. 16 against the Lakeland Rustlers. The women’s game starts at 6 and the men follow at 8 p.m. Volleyball

Augustana takes on the King’s Eagles on Oct. 23 to begin the season. The home opener is on Oct. 24 with return matches against the Eagles at 6 and 8 p.m. Curling

The Vikings will be hosting a challenge cup at the Rose City Curling Club on Nov. 7 to launch the new season. Biathlon

The first action in the winter season will begin for the Vikings Dec. 12 and 13 in Canmore. Cross Country Skiing

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Lauren Feth, of the Augustana Vikings, number 12, closes the gap on Keyano Huskies player Barbara Nascimento in women’s soccer action in Camrose on Sept. 12. The teams had to settle for a 1-1 tie in the home opening game for the Vikings. Cross-country running

The running team has grand prix races at Lethbridge on Sept. 26 and SAIT on Oct. 3 prior to

hosting a meet on Oct. 17 at Stoney Creek Centre. The ACAC provincials are on Oct. 31 in Lethbridge. The nationals are

Augustana will be competing in several competitions, including the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village Feb. 12 and 13, 2016, and the local Ole Uffda Loppet on Feb. 21, 2016.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Matt Harland of the Camrose Trojans goes up for the football with two Rocky Mountain House defenders watching. By Murray Green

The Camrose Composite High School Trojans football team’s defence was almost perfect. However, CCHS lost a 6-4 game to the Rocky Mountain House Rebels on Sept. 17. “We dominated the play and had 16 first downs to Rocky’s two. Our running game gained over 200 yards. The positives were the fact that our offence can move the ball and our defence stopped their running game,” said coach Adam Belanger. “We lost, but it was a good learning experience for our guys.” The Rebels only completed one pass, but it counted for six points. “What happened is that it went through the receiver’s hands hit one of our defensive player’s helmet and then back into his hands,” recalled coach Belanger. “It was a good run, but he had to catch it twice. It was just bad luck for us.” Camrose had a lot of tackles for losses on defence. All four points for CCHS came on safety plays. The offence moved the ball well, but had a trouble finishing with points on the board. The players felt bad when the other team cheered at the end of the game. “I told the boys to remember this feeling. The feeling of being so close, but just coming up short in a close game. I told them to remember that the next time we are in a tight game. No one likes a loss, but moving forward this is just going to make our guys real hungry,” stated coach Belanger. Rocky Mountain House had a good goal line stand on the one yard line to stop the best Camrose scoring chance of the evening. The Trojans did score, but it was called back on an off-side. The Trojans are now 1-1 on the season heading into Stettler. Last year, Camrose only lost one regular season game. The team still has a chance to equal that mark. “Austin Thompson had an incredible game on both sides of the ball. He returned about eight kicks and averaged more than 13 yards a return,” said Belanger. CCHS hosts Drayton Valley on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. and Ponoka on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.

Pro Sports Photography The Camrose Kodiaks beat the Olds Grizzlys on this shot and in the home opener 5-3 on Sept. 18. Camrose also won by the same score against Fort McMurray to improve its record to 4-0 early in the season.

By Murray Green The Camrose Kodiaks were still shuffling the deck as the team played its first two games of the season. The Kodiaks acquired defenceman Jake Dube from the Okotoks Oilers for forward Danton Davis. In another deal, Camrose sent goalie Reid Kilburn to English River in the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) in northern Ontario. “Jake has a great attitude, he skates well, moves the puck well and competes. He is a left hand shot, which is what we were looking for from the point,” said coach and general manager Boris Rybalka. “In acquiring Dube, the Kodiaks had to give up something good and that was Danton Davis. He will do well in Okotoks as they were looking for scoring and that is what he does well.” The Kodiaks changed direction in goal and Kilburn went to the English River Miners in the SIJHL. “Reid is an outstanding young man and we wish him all the best with the Miners,” added Rybalka. Camrose opened the season on the road with a 5-3 victory over the Olds Grizzlys on Sept. 11. Captain Cam Gotaas led the charge on offence with two goals. He scored just 37 seconds into the game and then added a shorthanded marker in the second. After Olds tied the game in the second, Cole McBride put the Kodiaks back on top. T.J. Brown connected on a late power play to give the Kodiaks a 4-2 lead. In the third, Olds closed the gap with a shorthanded tally of their own. The comeback attempt was halted when Stefan Danielson hit the net after a feed from McBride. Brodan Salmond started between the pipes for Camrose and stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced. The Kodiaks fired 32 shots at the Grizzlys net. Camrose doubled the Drumheller Dragons 4-2 the next night as Tanner Younghans took his turn at a two-goal game. The Dragons went up 1-0 after the first frame and but Younghans evened the score early in the second. After another Drumheller tally, McBride and newcomer Dude gave Camrose its first lead on the contest. Younghans put the game out of reach late in the third.

Working out in an outdoor gym may be appealing to those who don’t like the stuffy atmosphere of closedin quarters. Camrose PCN received the 2014 Alberta Blue Cross Healthy Communities Grant and has been planning diligently with the City of Camrose and the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition for the installation of a new Camrose Outdoor Gym. With construction on track, the outdoor gym will hold its grand opening on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from noon to 3 p.m. A ribbon cutting will take place at 12:30 p.m. in Jubilee Park. Exercise experts will on site for three hours to show people how to properly use the new equipment. The grant of $50,000 was to assist in keeping local residents healthy. Recognizing the significant role an active lifestyle plays in improving health, well-being and quality of life, the Camrose PCN put the funding towards the purchase and installation of a community outdoor gym. Through its Healthy Communities Grant Program, Alberta Blue Cross is investing $1 million over a five-year period to support and promote active living in communities across Alberta. Outdoor gyms are gaining momentum, offering an alternative for people wanting to become more active and stay healthy. “This helps to encourage people to go outdoors and we have wonderful outdoor spaces here in Camrose,” said Dr. Chris Nichol. “This adds another opportunity (for fitness) and is close to walking trails. Walking is good exercise, but there are other things to do. This is another way to get involved in outside activities. The annual Machinery Day at Camrose and District Centennial Museum has been moved to this Saturday to coincide with the Alberta Culture Days festival and the Street Performers’ Festival that goes with it. “We are hoping that some of the people who attend the Street Performers’ Festival will wind up coming here and that the people who come here will be taking in the street performers,” said museum coordinator Janine Carroll. Machinery Day is one of the museum’s most popular events of the year. “All the machinery that runs will be running,” said Carroll. “We’ll be pulling out the antique cars and trucks, and will even be doing a threshing demonstration using the old steam engine.” The museum is also trying to line up a few new attractions. “We’re working on bringing in a rope maker so the kids can try their hand at cranking rope, and we are trying to contact a man who has the equipment to make miniature hay bales,” said Carroll. The events will be moved inside in the case of rain. Camrose and District Centennial Museum is currently on the lookout for any clothing that can easily be altered into Klondike or cowboy type fashions that it can be worn by people attending the special events it puts on during the year. “It would be great if people could come to the museum a few days before the event to pick out some old fashioned clothes that they would like to wear,” said Carroll. “The clothes would be donated items, or items from the Camrose Thrift Shop, not any of the artifacts that we have in our collection.”

Crop conditions across county vary from good to bad By Dan Jensen Crop conditions varied from very good to downright bad as farmers in Camrose county began their harvest. “The areas that got the showers are doing pretty well but even those have different levels of maturity,” said Round Hill area farmer and Canadian Federation of Agriculture/Alberta Federation of Agriculture vice-president Humphrey Banack. “It has been a challenge but we are doing our best to manage those challenges and we are up to most any challenge out there.”

Banack feels that good quality crops will go a long ways towards offsetting some of the yield issues. “The initial grades and quality have been good but the rain that we have been seeing for the last few days will affect some of that,” he said. “The worst of all the scenarios would be a lower yield with lower quality. That would really hurt.” Banack isn’t sure how many farmers will be dipping into their crop insurance coverage because of the dry conditions that were experienced in the early part of the year.

“There will be some producers doing it and others that will be just on the line,” he said. “Crop insurance is based on quantity of a certain grade so there will definitely be more if the crops we have now deteriorate.” While pea harvest in the County began around Aug. 20, wheat harvesting is still in the beginning to mid stages. “There isn’t really one part of the county where the farmers are more ahead with the harvest than any other,” said Banack. “Because of the rains they have only been

able to take a corner or a piece here or there. We combined this last Friday but I know there were other areas that weren’t going because of the rains that came through. I told the Rick Mercer people when they were here a year ago that you can’t harvest if you can’t hang any clothes on the line.” The hope of many producers is that by letting the canola stand longer they can get greater maturity. “There can be challenges with straight cutting canola, but I think everybody is looking at different ways to get

the most they can out of the crops out there,” said Banack. “They don’t want to be in a position where, when they start swathing it the seeds are going to break out of the pods and go onto the ground. A lot will depend though on jack frost. If we don’t see frost until around Sept. 20 this canola will get around and ripen. Frost any earlier than that can be detrimental to a canola crop because when it freezes it locks the chlorophyll into the seed and then it comes with green tinted oil that they have to bleach out, which discounts the price.”
