2015 Scarecrow Festival Small business owners in Camrose have once again used their time and creativity to build scarecrows for public viewing and pleasure. This year, a higher number of scarecrows seem to be on display inside stores and businesses as a measured step to combat the efforts of vandals as well as the temperamental side of Mother Nature. Judging will take place this Friday to determine the winners in each of three Scarecrow Festival categories: Best Decorated Business, Best Decorated Non-Profit or Institution, Best Decorated Residence. The winner in each category will be awarded $100, courtesy of The Camrose Booster. Be sure to notify The Camrose Booster if your location is to be included in the competition to ensure that you are not overlooked by the judges. Ph. 780.672.3142 or email ads@camrosebooster.com with your address (put ‘scarecrow’ in the subject line).

Camrose golfers stay hot as the season comes to a close By Murray Green

Although the golfing season is winding down for most golfers, a couple of local

players remain hot at the Camrose Golf Club course. Andrea Gilroy had a hole in one on number 11. It

was her first and she hit 108 yards using a gap wedge on Thursday, Sept. 17. Last week, Friday,

Sept. 11, Kerry Robinson recorded his perfect shot on number 11 for 116 yards using his pitching wedge.

On the Other Hand… De-Cluttering We have lived in the same house here in Camrose for thirtytwo years. We have been fortunate to have had no flood or fire. We have raised two children. We have had several different jobs. We have had several cars. We changed hobbies a few times. We have been fortunate to have such stability and good fortune. But there is one downside. CLUTTER. We moved a lot of stuff into the house over 32 years, but never had occasion to move it out. We added shelving, storage units and bankers’ boxes to hold all of our stuff. We moved this stuff around, but not out. It soon became clear that my stuff was priceless, but the other’s stuff was that which needed disposal. (Surprisingly, this view seemed to be shared by each and so everything became priceless and needed to be kept.) “Of course we will store it until you find a permanent residence” we said as family came and went. We wished we had a garage for the car, but alas, we only had one for stuff. ReStore, the Thrift Shop, the Emergency Shelter, the Diabetic Clothes Line all offered us opportunities to pass stuff along to homes where it might be better used and more appreciated. So we put it in boxes and stored it for “that day” which never seemed to come. Seeing the big green refuse container in our back drive has prompted some to ask – “Are you moving?” Some even more concerned – “Is one of you dying?” The answer is – “We are not moving!” And the second answer is obviously “yes” (aren’t we all) but we are not expecting to any time soon. The truth is we want to put down deeper roots, remodel the house, and get ready for the next years of enjoying Camrose and our place in Camrose. Step one is to de-clutter. This time has offered some reflection on the souvenirs of memories and events surrounding what were once priceless. This time also reminded me of my diminished memory. I could not remember where some of those treasures were from or even why they were once so treasured. I was reminded by my family that they had little attachment at all (oh the pain it caused me) to what I had so highly prized. Most surprising, three dumpsters later, I found the de-cluttering not nearly as painful as I had expected. Next step, at 66 years old, is to de-clutter my mind. I am not OCD as some suspect; I am just correct in all of my habits. I am not fixed in my ways; I am just certain of how things ought to be done. I am not nostalgic; I just like things the way they were. I am not unwilling to change; I am just extremely comfortable without changing. I find myself experiencing a certain satisfaction having de-cluttered our house and getting ready for “whatever” comes next. De-cluttering the house was easy. On the other hand, decluttering my mind. Ask me later.

MS education events in Camrose The MS Society, Alberta and Northwest Territories Division, is hosting two MS information events in Camrose this month. On Sept. 30, Margaret Prociuk, MN, NP will present to local health professionals at the Camrose Public Health Centre from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Later the same day, Margaret will follow with another presentation specific to community members at the Norsemen Inn from 7 to 9 p.m. The evening activities are free and open to anyone; refreshments and appetizers will be served. This event will feature Margaret Prociuk, who will bring a professional perspec-

tive on homecare, caregiving, rehab, drug therapies, client care and self-managed care for those living with MS and/ or other disabilities. “We are thrilled to be bringing Ms. Prociuk to Camrose,” said Doug Tokaryk, manager, special projects at the MS Society of Canada – AB and NWT Division. “She brings a wealth of professional experience and an engaging speaking style to her public talks. We know many people live with multiple sclerosis in this city and it’s our desire that Margaret’s talk educates and encourages them, and all MS stakeholders.” Canada has the highest

rate of multiple sclerosis in the world. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system comprising the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve. It is one of the most common neurological diseases affecting young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society provides services to people with MS and their families and funds research to find the cause and cure for this disease. Visit mssociety.ca or call 1-800-2687582 to make a donation or for more information.

Fire Prevention Week Oct. 4 to 10

Fire Prevention Officer Jeff Knopf watched last week as Mayor Norm Mayer proclaimed Oct. 4 to 10 as Fire Prevention Week in Camrose. The 2015 Fire Prevention Week theme “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm” effectively serves to remind us that we need working smoke alarms to give us the time to get out safely.

Location matters when it comes to your smoke alarm is the message behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm.” Along with firefighters and safety advocates nation wide, the Camrose Fire Department is joining forces with the non-profit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 4 to 10, to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. “In a fire, seconds count,” said Jeff Knopf, fire and life safety educator. “Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.” According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, three out of five fire deaths resulted from

fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign includes the following messages. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are ten years old, or sooner, if they don’t respond properly. Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it. If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Go to your outside meeting place. The Camrose Fire Department will be hosting activities during Fire Prevention Week to promote “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm. Through these educational, family-oriented

activities, residents can learn more about the importance of having a working smoke alarm in every bedroom. A pancake breakfast will be held at the Fire Hall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4. Neighbourhood smoke alarm testing will be held in the area of 53 Avenue between 46 Street and 53 Street Oct. 6. The Camrose Great Escape, a city-wide fire drill, will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 7. Firefighters will be driving fire trucks throughout the city and if they see people having a fire drill they will stop and give out prizes. Grade 4 students within the city will receive a free smoke detector to be placed in their bedroom. To find out more about Fire Prevention Week programs and activities in Camrose, please contact the Camrose Fire Department at 780-672-2906 or visit www.camrose.ca. To learn more about smoke alarms and “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm,” visit NFPA’s website at www.firepreventionweek.org, or www.sparky. org/fpw.

Augustana and Chamber to host election forum Oct. 5 By Murray Green

The Camrose Chamber of Commerce and the University of Alberta Augustana Student Association are partnering to host a federal election forum on Monday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. It will be held in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. “All forums fall under the mandate of the Chamber(s) of Commerce, so that is why we are involved. The students association wanted to set up a date right away and because it’s our mandate we said absolutely we wanted to be involved,” said Camrose Chamber of Commerce past president Jennifer Filip, who is also on the government affairs committee. “Augustana wanted to be involved because they have political science students and a club. It is an opportunity for them to get more students involved in the election process. They feel it is important that the younger voters get out and listen to the issues and voice their opinion on issues within their country.” “Officially, on the Elections Canada website, we have two candidates running in the Battle River Crowfoot election. They are NDP candidate Katherine Swampy and MP Conservative Kevin Sorenson. As other candidates officially announce they are running, they will be added to the list of speakers. Candidates had until Sept. 28 to announce their candidacy.” Since then, Liberal candidate Andy Kowalsi has been comfirmed. The candidates will be allowed opening remarks before answering questions pre-submitted to the Chamber of Commerce. “Because we are a chamber, we want to make sure some questions asked have a business perspective as well,” said Filip. “We will have forms available for people to submit questions prior to the start of the forum.” Associate Professor Lars Hallstrom will be the moderator. “You can send your questions to the chamber by emailing admina@camrosechamber.ca,” said Filip. “We want to make sure people’s questions are heard, but we don’t want them duplicated.”

Q.

With the holiday season coming up, and all the stress that goes with it, I want to make sure I stay healthy. Any suggestions?

A:

Absolutely! Stress management strategies are critical in maintaining wellness and disease prevention. While we might think one instance or event is more stressful than another, our bodies perceive all stress equally. Cortisol levels rise, neurotransmitter levels become erratic, key nutrients are depleted and hormone levels vary. Supplements are any easy, cost effective method of managing the side effects of stress which can include: insomnia, headaches, pain, anxiety, poor immunity and fatigue or tiredness. While these can be symptoms of other, deeper health issues, we have found that specific supplements can be very helpful in combatting many symptoms of stress. It is also worth noting, that while we may notice more stressful symptoms around certain times of the year ( eg. Christmas), our bodies deal with stress on a day-to-day basis and many people find that a supplement program helps them feel better not just in higher stress periods but throughout the entire year. Visit us today for suggestions on which supplements may work best for you. Answer provided by:

Battle River Crowfoot Green Party candidate Gary Kelly, Liberal Party candidate Andy Kowalski and NDP candidate Katherine Swampy will be sharing their views when Camrose Public Library hosts an election forum from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. The candidates will be given two minutes each to make opening statements, after which they will be able to spend two minutes answering questions that have been pre-submitted to the library. “People will be able to drop off their questions at the library or submit them online on our forum website,” said Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman. The forum concludes with each candidate given two minutes to make final comments. The election brochures and policies of all four of the candidates in Battle River Crowfoot, including Conservative Kevin Sorenson, will be made available before and after the forum. Camrose Public Library will be providing assistance at its computer stations to anyone wishing to register or confirm their registration for the election, which will be held on Oct. 19. The library held a forum earlier this year for the candidates in the City of Camrose byelection. The Battle River Crowfoot riding was created largely from the former riding of Crowfoot, combined with the southern half of the former Vegreville-Wainwright riding. Communities in the riding include Three Hills, Consort, Stettler, Camrose, Viking and Wainwright. Just over 16 per cent of the people in Battle River Crowfoot were seniors as of the 2011 census, the highest figure in Alberta. Just under five per cent of people here in 2011 were immigrants, the lowest number in the province.

Why are some travel “bargains” not bargains at all?

There is a timeless quote perfect for this message: “Price is what you pay – value is what you receive.” Our team of travel consultants regularly work with clients who drop by for professional agent assistance after they have taken a trip they booked elsewhere, on an internet site, or from a fax fanout. The usual pattern is that they were shocked at surprise costs which were not completely revealed in the seemingly ‘irresistible’ offer. Cruise and river cruise travel seems to rank highly in terms of this kind of disappointment. The expensive lesson… not all so-called all-inclusive vacations are truly all-inclusive! As exerts with an excellent reputation we know the “fine-print”, we know which companies provide true superior value and which are known for “nickel and diming.” Our goal is to provide no-surprise travel, always. We can show you true value, even if it means paying a bit more for a vacation package. We believe travel should be memorable for all the right reasons. We want you as a repeat client. Count on us! Q.

Should I get a flu vaccine this fall?

A:

The single best way to protect against getting the flu, reduce passing on the flu to others, cut down on doctors’ visits, save on health care costs and decrease the number of flu-related hospitalizations and deaths is to get a flu vaccination. I urge everyone 6 months of age or older to obtain the flu vaccine this fall. Vaccinations will be available as of October 20 (no appointment necessary) at our pharmacy department. It is especially important for certain individuals to not procrastinate about this important step in personal health: people 65 years or better, if you have medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or chronic lung disease. Pregnant women and people who live with, or care for, others should also not second-guess the advantages of a flu shot. Conversely, you should not book a flu vaccination for a child younger than 6 months. As the flu vaccine may contain egg, it is important for you to tell us if you are allergic. The scientific data regarding flu vaccinations is overwhelmingly in favour. Count on us this fall to help you get through winter without “catching” the flu. Answer provided by:

Q.

Are my deposits at Vision Credit Union government guaranteed?

A:

All deposits, no matter the amount, are 100% guaranteed (including interest!), by the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation (CUDGC). Deposits include chequing and savings accounts, RRSPs, RRIFs, and TFSAs. This impressive guarantee covers ALL deposits, including money in your foreign currency account at Vision Credit Union. It even covers deposits with terms exceeding five years. One of the primary roles of the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation is to provide a 100% guarantee of deposits held with Alberta credit unions. Your money… any amount… could not be safer anywhere else!

Q. A:

As surprising as it sounds, the answer is a resounding yes! Our own clients have found the treatment we provide can greatly reduce acne breakouts, and now a 40-year scientific d b study offers additional compelling evidence to support the benefits of the age-old Chinese-based medicine for use on patients with acne. Unlike applying cream or other chemical treatments, which do not address the underlying imbalance in the body – acupuncture, and in some cases herbal medicine and slight dietary changes, can yield amazing results. Side effects such as dry skin, mood changes and serious side effects from taking acne medications are non-factors when relying on acupuncture for acne problems. Like all acupuncture programs, this treatment is used to make the entire body healthier. Additional benefits you may experience during your acupuncture for acne treatment may also potentially include better digestion and sleep, lower stress level and increased energy. Acupuncture is all about natural communication within the body. Herbal medicine provides building blocks to make those changes. Combining the two greatly assists healing. Don’t be shy to try! Which travel destination W currently represents excellent value?

A:

Europe! All the major airlines now have excellent routes and scheduling. W WestJet just announced direct flights tto Gatwick (London) twice weekly from Edmonton and five times per week from Calgary. Go direct from Edmonton to Amsterdam on KLM or direct to Heathrow from Calgary. We love the five-day per week flight option with a stop in Iceland by Iceland Air, where you can layover for up to one week at absolutely no extra charge. Europe offers so much to see: history, culture, entertainment and spectacular scenery. The dollar exchange is currently favourable. Travel, once there, is a breeze - spectacular and memorable. Train trips are wonderful. River cruises have become extremely popular. We have tremendous experience with European vacations to pass on to you. Count on us! Points to remember: book early for maximum savings and best price. Flight times and bookings are available up to 330 days before departure. If you book nine to ten months before your travel date, you will find far better pricing than any seat sale or sell-off pricing. Travel agents buy wholesale direct from travel and tour companies. Q. A:

Do you see prices of Camrose residential real estate dropping?

This is a question I hear, daily. While other centers have experienced W pprice reductions because of their eexposure to the oil and gas markets, Camrose has far less reliance on this C sector. Because many retirees move here to live, a trading area based on agriculture, education, healthcare and a wide array of other occupations, we have historically been exempt from fickle moves in market pricing. The beauty of Camrose, the perfect distance to Edmonton and the opportunities here for lifestyle and comfortable living means Camrose is poised well for prices to hold firm and for the market to continue to grow at a reasonable pace. If you are in a position to sell now, we have significant interest and qualified buyers for property that is priced below $300,000. If you are interested in building I can show you some of the best building lots Camrose has ever offered. These are located on the southern edge of our City, south of the ring road. Whether buying or selling, put my years of experience to work for you. I’m ready to help you with your next transaction. Answer provided by:

Any reason I shouldn’t keep using my hot tub over the winter?

A:

If your tub is in proper operating condition, use it. Enjoy it! For most people hot tubs are a true joy during the winter. Lay back and watch the brilliance of the night sky or the snowflakes gently falling. Some of the best conversations you will ever have with family members will likely take place in your hot tub. Soothe those aching muscles, get relief from arthritis and other medical ailments. Today’s hot tubs, especially the Hydropool line-up, are made in Canada for the harsh Canadian environment. They are built for maximum energy efficiency and designed to not let you down when the weather turns cold. No additional maintenance or water analysis is required during winter’s extreme weather. Simply make sure your tub is cared for as you would at any other time of the year. We recommend you drain and refill your tub in the fall before the weather changes drastically. With regular water testing, and adjusting the chemistry of the water as required, you would be set until another scheduled water change in the spring. pring. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Messy in the Middle I’ve just started reading Rising Strong, a book by Brené Brown based on her research about why some people grow from their setbacks while others get stuck. As I began dipping into the book, I found myself thinking about the life of a butterfly – a metaphor for transformation. An egg hatches into a caterpillar that eats everything in sight, spins itself a cocoon, and some time later breaks out of the cocoon as a butterfly. Nice. ***

Until a few years ago, I just assumed the caterpillar nodded off to sleep and magically woke up as a butterfly. Then I heard a scientist describe what goes on inside that peaceful-looking cocoon. From the outside it looks like nothing much is happening. But inside? It’s violent! Gruesome! Probably not suitable for children! Maybe you already know this but I didn’t. Within the caterpillar are a few cells with the capacity to become part of a butterfly. They are called “imaginal” cells. (That name tickles me.) When the first imaginal cells show up, the caterpillar’s immune system perceives them as enemies and kills them off, like good immune cells are supposed to do. But the imaginal cells keep coming. Eventually there are so many that the immune cells can’t kill them fast enough and they take over the caterpillar’s body. There is a stage somewhere during this process that the (former) caterpillar is basically liquid goo. ***

Thinking back to times of major challenge or change in my life, I remember that stage! After you know something is ending or changing but you have no idea what is emerging, there’s an in-between stage. You might try to fend off what appears to be the disastrous end of life as you know it, but that doesn’t work. You don’t know who you are any more. You might be consumed with self-doubt and confusion, or terror. No, you’re not crazy – though it might feel like it. ***

Back to the cocoon. Within that goo, the imaginal cells begin to take shape into a body and wings. Eventually the butterfly cannot be contained by the cocoon. The cocoon has served its purpose and the butterfly breaks out – possibly still with damp wings, but able to fly. It doesn’t look like the result of a violent transformation.

Refugee sponsorship meeting at Centra Cam this Wednesday By Dan Jensen

The refugee sponsoring process, the role of sponsors, and the financial requirements of sponsors will be addressed at a refugee sponsorship information meeting Wednesday, Sept. 30. The meeting will be held in the boardroom of the Centra Cam Vocational Training Association starting at 7:30 p.m. “We felt that, due to the great need, we should hold an information meeting at this time to see how the Camrose community wishes to respond,” said Erhard Pinno, chair of the Camrose Interchurch Refugee Committee, which is hosting the event. “We’re going to have residents who have received or sponsored refugees describe their experience and answer any questions.” The legal entity for sponsoring refugees may be a church, a service club or a

group of five or more individuals. St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church is currently sponsoring one young man and has a family that will be coming at the end of October. The new family is related to one the church sponsored a couple of years ago. Messiah Lutheran Church, which has been sponsoring refugee families since 1980, has completed its legal responsibilities with Paula Valencia and her daughter, Sara, who are currently in Edmonton. “We still stay in contact and just bought them a car,” said Pinno. “Twenty-five or 26 people contributed money so they could have a car.” The United Church is not sponsoring a family at the current time, but has indicated a desire to get involved in the process. Sponsors have found

that helping refugee families from other countries gives them a sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing they have made a difference. “The families that are impacted by sponsorship have the beginning of a new life and a new hope,” said Pinno. “Having an organization sponsor them makes all the difference in the world.” The calamity happening with refugees in Syria re-inforces the need for Canadians to provide support in whatever way they can. “There are people now who know a lot about refugees that they didn’t know about before,” said Pinno. “The publicity surrounding the need to sponsor refugees is now a political issue as well as an ongoing concern for living out our Christian faith.”

Brené Brown’s book gives examples of how the middle of a creative process is the hardest and messiest part. That’s when the toughest challenges show up, the unanticipated barriers, the strongest emotions. The middle of a big change is like the cocoon stage. What may not be visible from the outside is the tumultuous turbulence. Lots of stories of overcoming challenges focus on the hero’s or heroine’s bold and clever moves to success. The stories don’t tell about lying awake at night worrying, or being blindsided by toxic emotion that turns you into a person you really don’t like very much. Brené Brown’s advice? Dive deep. She says the more you are prepared to experience fully what is happening, the more you are likely to discover wisdom and opportunities. I’m being simplistic here – in part because I’ve only started reading her book! – but the pattern fits my experience and I see parallels in other fields too. ***

Two other thoughts about the butterfly metaphor: First, perhaps it is almost inevitable that, even when our rational minds know that some changes are unstoppable and might even be good for us, other parts of us try to stop the change. Perhaps those resistant parts of us accurately see this as a life and death struggle (the caterpillar will be no more). Second, when an egg first hatches into a caterpillar, everything required to become a butterfly already lives within it. Though some stages (like the eat-everything-in-sight stage) aren’t very attractive and might even be disapproved of (gluttony!), all stages are essential to the caterpillar’s destiny as a butterfly. On occasions when I’m feeling somewhat like caterpillar goo, those thoughts are comforting. ***

Lord brings a powerful voice

By Murray Green Soprano Marie-Josée Lord will be leading a trio of talented musicians at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Friday, Oct. 2 starting at 8 p.m. Lord, is joined with Uliana Drugova (violin) and Dominic Boulianne (piano) to present Jambalaya – a spicy collection of audience favourites. With her own personal style, voice, charisma and choice of repertoire, she delivers a great recital of classical and popular pieces. It will be an introduction to the opera in a mixture of classical and popular melodies. “I’m very happy to perform this series in Alberta because I don’t come out often. The last time was two or three years ago. The show Jambalaya is really a way for people who are not used to opera, to discover it,” said Lord. “When I created Jambalaya, I wanted a concert that would be relaxed and at the same time share classical music that I like with others. I want to bring people to the lyrical world and explain to them what is opera and help them understand that opera is not an act that is so inaccessible. It is possible to discover opera and like it.” Gershwin, Verdi, Bernstein, Dvorák, Bizet and many other composers make up the trio’s song selection. She sings in English, Italian and a couple of songs in French. Lord captivates audiences with her irresistible personality, generosity and passion for lyric art. “I like to talk to the audience and have a connection with them as I share the songs,” she said. “I want to have a relationship with them and don’t want the audience to feel like I just stand like a statue there and sing, and they

just sit listening. I want to communicate with them, speak with them and have a good relaxing show.” Her original voice has led to prestigious awards including Prix d’Excellence de la Culture, awarded by the Fondation de l’Opéra de Québec. She was selected to represent Canada at the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Last season, she sang Violetta in La traviata (Verdi) in Würtzburg, Germany as well as Serena in Porgy and Bess (Gershwin) for five sold out

performances at l’Opéra de Montréal. “This is my prairie debut series of seven concerts. Then I will come back out west in the spring and perform seven more. The purpose is to play more places, so people can discover the music,” said Lord, who grew up in Quebec City. Her first solo CD, with Orchestre Métropolitain, won a 2011 Félix award and received a Juno nomination. She is a sought-after performer for opera, recitals and with many orches-

tras. Then she added her second in 2012 and in 2014 she released a Christmas album. Lord will be helping University of Alberta, Augustana campus students as well. She is presenting a vocal masterclass with Bachelor of Music vocal students from the studio of head of voice Prof. Kathleen Corcoran participating. This takes place on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lougheed Centre as well. There is no charge to attend the mas-

terclass and the public is welcome. “Students will present me their works, I will listen to them and give some advice. I want to be available to answer any questions they have about singing, carrying (notes) and about music,” added Lord. “I’m sure I will like Camrose.” To purchase tickets, visit the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre website at www.camroselive.ca or call the box office at 780608-2922.

Rose City Swingers Square Dance Club members Debbie Johnson, left, Charles Delhomeau, Darlene Delhomeau, City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer, Dolores Evans, Camrose County Deputy Reeve Doug Lyseng, Helen Lowther and Wayne Lowther practice their steps to prepare for the Oct. 4 to 10 Square Dancing week.

By Murray Green

Camrose County deputy reeve Doug Lyseng and City of Camrose mayor Norm Mayer declared Oct. 4 to 10 Square Dance Week in the area. The Camrose Rose City Swingers Square Dance Club is excited to be celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. “The club members welcome the public to join them in square dancing this fall. Dancing is easy to learn and if you are not sure about joining, come and watch,” said Darlene Delhomeau, of the club. The Fall Kick-off Dance and Open House takes place on Oct. 9 at Mirror Lake Centre, beginning at 7:30 p.m. “S q u a r e dance clothes are not required for beginners. We are accepting members ages 13 and up. Come with partners if you can,” added Darlene. “Dancers usually meet at the Mirror Lake Centre.

Lessons are available beginning on Oct. 16.” The Rose City Swingers Square Dance Club was created in 1980 as a result of the action of five Camrose Square Dance couples joining with the already established Wetaskiwin Square Dance Club and the Senior Games Society, to arrange a square dance Jamboree to be held in conjunction with the Camrose Senior Games in August, 1980. Because of the interest shown in this Jamboree, two couples, Betty and George Baum and Georgina and Don Nelson, decided they should start a square dance club in Camrose. The Camrose Rose Swingers Square Dance Club was started in November, 1980. Official club colours were voted in to be red, white and black. A white swan was chosen to be the mascot. By 1982, the Camrose Club received the Central Square and Round Dance Association President’s Trophy in recognition of their

hard work and enthusiasm in attending other club functions as well as their own. The Camrose club draws many visitors to the city by continuing to hold special dance events such as the Fall Kick-off dance and supper, and Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine parties. The New Dancer’s Jamboree and the August Weekend Campout draw the largest crowds. In addition to these events, Camrose square dancers have been invited a number of times to teach and dance with the university students at Augustana Campus as part of their curriculum development program. Over the years, the club has been grateful to have had Olive and Allan Zwierschke as its main callers, as well as many guest callers to provide a wide variety of lively music. Seniors over 70 carrying more debt Mortgage debt among seniors is increasing right across Canada, and for those aged 70 and over has increased 12 per cent compared to 2013. That’s according to the results of a Debt in Retirement study conducted by HomEquity Bank and Equifax Canada. The study was conducted in July, 2015 and focused on Canadians aged 55 and older. It analyzed the main categories of debt including: mortgages, lines of credit, bank loans, car loans, credit cards and retail cards. The study provided a comparison period of 2013 and 2015. Here, below, are the

key findings of the Debt in Retirement Study: In 2015, 16.5 per cent of people aged 55 plus are carrying a mortgage. This is an increase of 10 per cent from 2013 The average mortgage balance for Canadians aged 55 plus grew by 11 per cent from $158,000 in 2013 to $176,000 in 2015 The average mortgage balance is highest in the 55 to 60 age group, at $189,000, and lowest for the 75 plus age group at $134,000 Seniors aged 71 plus with a mortgage have an average balance of $140,000 Overall debt for those 70 plus has increased by 12 per cent between 2013

and 2015 versus only a four per cent increase for those under 70. “It’s shocking to find Canadians 71 plus are still carrying hefty mortgages,” notes Laurie Campbell, CEO, Credit Canada Debt Solutions. “By this age, they are fully retired and there’s no opportunity to increase their income.” In fact, the study is showcasing a more relaxed attitude towards debt, she adds, “and this can jeopardize retirement.” The best case scenario is to “have your financial cards in good order in your early 50s and mortgage free by retirement,” Campbell explains.

Buffaloes lose close game By Murray Green

The Camrose Buffaloes peewee football team ran into a tough Sherwood Park Sabrecats squad in the team’s home opener on Sept. 20. Sherwood Park scored two touchdowns to win 12-0 in a close contest in Kin Park. The Buffaloes are now 1-1 after two games in regular season play.

The bantam squad suffered a one-sided loss and fell to 0-2 on the season. They lost to the St. Albert Fury, who will likely move up a division for the playoffs. Camrose was also at home with Capital District Minor Football Association league play on Sunday, Sept. 27.

This show is held annually in conjunction with our conference so members from across Canada can enter their items into the show. They demonstrate their skill and creativity in the various categories. It also gives artists a chance to connect, share and inspire others to create using fibre. The categories are weaving, spinning, dyeing, felting, and mixed creative fibre art and these are broken down into various categories within each skill set. This year the library at the Augustana Campus will have the display for everyone to come and view. The official opening of the show will be held on Saturday Oct. 3, at 3 p.m. and be on display daily until Oct. 30. It is a marvelous show – a must see for young and old. It’s been a few years since the movie The Blues Brothers was a major hit at the box office. To help music fans recall the movie and prepare for the upcoming Blues Brothers Revival show at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m., the movie will be played on the huge screen at the LPAC on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. The movie is better than the original because they didn’t have HD then. “Even if you have seen the movie before, you have never seen it like this. It will be featured in full HD and on the 42 foot screen that is larger than at regular theatres,” said LPAC acting general manager Nick Beach. “We thought it would be fun to show the movie two weeks in advance of the concert. We are not a movie house – there are other venues for that. But, on special occasions we bring in movies like this. We are thinking of a couple of movies next year, along with fun themes.” This was a classic film that featured the late John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. After his release from prison, Jake (Belushi) reunites with his brother, Elwood (Aykroyd) to form the Blues Brothers. Jake’s first task is to save the orphanage the brothers grew up in from closing by raising $5,000 to pay back taxes. The two are convinced they can earn the money by getting their old band back together. Howev-

er, after playing several gigs and making a few enemies, including the police, the brothers face daunting odds to deliver the money on time. “Since we were bringing in the official Blues Brothers Revue to Camrose, we thought it appropriate to introduce those who have never experienced the original film, or, re-introduce those who haven’t had the pleasure of watching the movie recently,” explained Beach. “I think the movie will re-ignite everyone’s love for the movie, music and amazing stage show.” Official Blues Brothers Revue ticket holders, season subscribers and picksix purchasers will receive a discount to the movie if they go to the box office, or phone in. There have been many imitators, but there is only one duo in North America sanctioned by both Aykroyd and Judith Belushi (John’s wife) to be the official version of Jake and Elwood Blues. Performers Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty capture the infectious humor and unbridled spirit of the Blues Brothers similar to the originals. Backed by the original musical director Canadian Paul Shaffer, the show will be filled with classic hits from the Blues Brothers catalog, including Soul Man, Rubber Biscuit and Sweet Home Chicago. The Blues Brothers’ act evolved beyond the Las Vegas show rooms and, together, Kieron Lafferty (Elwood) with his stage part-

ner Wayne Catania (Jake), starred in the Blues Brothers Revival, a musical written by Victor Pisano and staged in Chicago in 2004. “We’re excited to bring this concert to Camrose. It features a huge brass band to give a full sound. Those who have seen this concert say it is an amazing show and a rocking night,” said Beach. “The people that produced the movie helped produce this concert.” The Blues Brothers act has toured extensively across the US, Canada and Australia, and is currently touring in The Official Blues Brothers Revue produced by Judy Belushi Pisano and Dan Aykroyd, with musical director Paul Shaffer. The Norsemen Inn Brewing Co. will make the Longship Lager beer available before and during the intermission. “They were quick to come on board as sponsors,” said Tanya Pattullo, LPAC patron services manager. This live concert show combines the comedy and hits from the original movie and pays homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, gospel, and soul music. Jake, Elwood and the band hit the right balance of humour, music and mayhem. It is fun for all ages. The box office is open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Battle River Crowfoot Conservative candidate Kevin Sorenson and NDP candidate Katherine Swampy will be sharing ways to foster active citizenship among up and coming generations of voters at a École Charlie Killam School candidates’ forum from 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 5. École Charlie Killam School drama and humanities teacher Jon Lindstrand feels the forum will allow students to become more aware of the democratic process and the importance of being active and informed citizens, while at the same time giving candidates a chance to tap into a demographic of people who are the future voters and possible leaders of Canadaand, people who have a significant impact on the current electorate. “Charlie Killam students are participating in the Student Vote program for this federal election so it will be interesting to see if and how students’ opinions change after the forum,” said Lindstrand. “The Student Vote is often nearly identical to the outcome of the actual election.” The candidates will be given three minutes to make opening remarks, after which they will have time to answer student generated questions, vetted by the teachers, from each grade. They will also be given time to answer questions by school staff ranging from the importance of voting and the health of Canada to their views about democracy. The forum will conclude with three-minute statements from the candidates.

QUALITY Seniors’ Chat Camrose Seniors’ Coalition

Despite the new date and the new location, it will be the same good time when Celebrating Seniors Day returns to Camrose for a fourth year this fall. Hoping that this year’s event won’t be subject to the same massive snowfall that blanketed much of east central Alberta at the end of November last year, Camrose Seniors’ Coalition has moved the date up a month – to Oct. 30 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The location has also changed. Celebrating Seniors Day 2015 will be held in the auditorium of Camrose United Church. Last year, Camrose Seniors’ Coalition asked seniors who they wanted to see in 2015. Some said they wanted to see Ken Grambo. Well, Ken Grambo is coming, accompanied by Leslie Lindballe, who was such a delightful performer at the Strawberry Tea during Seniors’ Week this past June. Ken and Leslie have performed together before, and even made a video several years ago in support of the Family Violence Action Society. A few decades may separate Leslie and Ken, but that makes no difference when they get together to play some of their favourite tunes. Both will agree that a thriving community is one that creates space where people of all ages come together to learn, play, and grow together. With that in mind, Seniors’ Coalition has also invited students from Augustana’s Theatre Department – specifically, Paul “Sparky” Johnson’s improv class – to add to the intergenerational flavor of this year’s event. In a thriving community, people also take care of one another. Often, it is the very old or the very young who are most at risk of being neglected or abused. What are the signs? How can we help? If intervention is needed to ensure someone’s safety, how can we also maintain that person’s dignity and autonomy? Autonomy is important to all of us, but especially as we age and face a future that may include decreased mobility and increased isolation from the rest of the world. To help us address some of those questions, Sheralyn Dobos, program director of the Camrose Family Violence Action Society, will start the day off with an informative and important interactive presentation on preventing elder abuse, entitled It’s Not Right: Neighbours, Friends and Family. Rounding out the day, seniors will have time to visit with one another or browse information displays showcasing the diverse active aging opportunities available in Camrose. They will also be served a delicious “old-fashioned meal with a bit of a hip twist,” cooked just right by locally owned and operated Prairie Oven Catering. Celebrating Seniors Day is made possible by a small grant from CDSS (Camrose and District Support Services), as well as several donations from local businesses and services clubs. Tickets are available until Oct. 23 at CDSS (2nd Floor, Community Centre). Call 780-672-0141 for more information.

Province boosts support for families, communities Funding for Family and Community Support Services programs that help strengthen communities will increase by $10 million. “Our government is committed to increasing FCSS program funding to meet the changing and expanding needs of children, families and seniors across the province,” said Irfan Sabir, Minister of Human Services. “Albertans rely on these programs to support their well-being and strengthen our communities. ”

Funding for FCSS now totals $86 million. Approximately $7.5 million will be distributed to all participating municipalities and Métis Settlements. In addition, the remaining $2.5 million will be distributed to the communities that have experienced substantial population growth. FCSS has been in Alberta for almost 50 years and offers a range of community-based programs and services that are preventive and enhance social

well-being, such as support groups, youth mentors, home support and outreach services for seniors. FCSS programs help improve Albertans’ quality of life and their ability to prevent or deal with crisis situations. “On behalf of the FCSS programs across the province, I would like to thank the Alberta government for the increase in funding,” said Jeff Carlson, president of the FCSS Association of Alberta. “The preventive

social services that FCSS programs provide to communities across this province will be enhanced as a result of this additional investment. Programs across Alberta will be better positioned to achieve outcomes that will strengthen all Albertans.” Quick Facts Three hundred and nineteen municipalities and Métis settlements receive FCSS grants. The Government of Alberta provides 80 per

cent of funding, with the participating municipality or Métis settlement providing the remaining 20 per cent. Many programs are delivered through partnerships with volunteers, local businesses and other agencies. In addition to FCSS funding, Human Services invests another $298 million in prevention and early intervention supports for families and children.

African Children’s Choir at Messiah Oct. 4 By Dan Jensen The African Children’s Choir will be stopping in Camrose as part of its 11-month long tour of North America Oct. 4. “We started last February in North Carolina and we will be on the road until January,” explained African Children’s Choir tour director Amy Kraus. “The kids love seeing new places and meeting new people.” The African Children’s Choir has 18 members between the ages of seven and 10 who melt the hearts of audiences with charming smiles and delightful African tunes, well-loved children’s songs, hand clapping and traditional spirituals. “People are really struck by the joy and the energy the children have,” said Kraus. “Their performance is really just full of life and hope and people are very drawn in by that. They have a lot of things to be joyful about despite the fact that many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. Being on tour is a huge experience for them.” The choir’s primary goal is to raise awareness of the need of destitute and orphaned children and to raise funds for continued development and support of African Children’s Choir programs. Once members complete the tour, they will return to their homeland in Uganda with the tools necessary for bettering their future. “Their future is very full of hope,” said Kraus. “Now that they are in their choir their education will be covered all the way up through university.” Choir members are chosen through an audition process at a school where they do a weekend of activities filled with singing and dancing and interaction with others of their own age. “A lot of consideration is given to their family background and how much they

would benefit from having their education covered,” said Kraus. In 1984, in the midst of Uganda’s bloody civil war, human rights activist Roy Barnett was called on to help the many thousands of orphaned and starving children abandoned and helpless to feed and protect themselves. Realizing the enormity of the task, Barnett and his team came up with a unique approach. The only way to make a meaningful difference was to impact the lives of the children one at a time. “Inspired by the singing of one small boy, we formed the first African Children’s Choir to show the world that Africa’s most vulnerable children have beauty, dignity and unlimited ability,” he said. The first choir was selected from orphaned and vulnerable children in the Kampala and Luwero

areas of Uganda. After being trained to perform and readied for living in new and different cultures, the children travelled from Uganda to tour amongst the North American church communities. They immediately impressed audiences with their vibrancy and outstanding musical talent and quickly became a mouthpiece for the plight of the many thousands of vulnerable children like them. The funds they earned through donations provided for their own education and support, as well as the construction of an orphanage in Kampala, from which a second African Children’s Choir was selected. Subsequent tours have funded a growing program of establishing literacy schools to enable the very neediest children to get a foot up into proper education.

Under Barnett’s leadership, the African Children’s Choir has gained international recognition, performing at Live 8, at the House of Commons and the Pentagon, and appearing at some of the world’s most prestigious halls, including the London Palladium, the International Club of Berlin, and the Palais des BeauxArts in Brussels. In 2011, the choir and its parent organization, Music for Life, won the prestigious Tumaini Award, sponsored by World Vision, Compassion and Save the Children for Best NGO Education Initiative. A year later, choir children came together from past choirs to perform for the Queen at the Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Catherine Macharia joined the choir in 1993 at the time that Kenya was undergoing political

turmoil. She toured with choirs 10 and 11, something she said was the greatest experience of her life, since she was able to meet many great people and share the love of Christ with them. Early in 2011 she graduated with a diploma in nursing, and today works in the second largest slum of Kenya as a nurse midwife. To her, the nursing experience is a God-given opportunity to change lives and make a difference in various women’s lives in her community. Dr. Robert Kalvesubula was a member of the second choir. “Before I joined the African Children’s Choir I was actually out of school,” he said. “I didn’t have food to eat and I didn’t even have clothes to wear. I didn’t know where to sleep because we were 10 children sharing one house. When I joined the ACC, everything changed. They provided for me food, they provided for me shelter, and I was able to play with the others without fearing and wondering what I was going to eat the next day.” After his exposure to the world on the tour, Dr. Kalbesubula went back to Uganda, where the ACC paid his tuition, as well as the tuition of his brothers. He went on to medical school in Kampala for his first degree, and then earned a Masters degree in Internal Medicine in a country where there are only three nephrologists for a population of 30 million. Today he works in the village where he was born, giving back to the community in ways that were previously unimaginable. The African Children’s Choir concert will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church starting at 7 p.m. The concert is no charge, but a free-will offering will be received to support African Children’s Choir’s education, care, relief and development programs.

Boys and Girls Club ready to start new year By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Boys and Girls Club will be starting another year of operation Oct. 1. “We are excited about getting underway,” said Camrose Boys and Girls Club executive director Rees James. “We have a few new things planned that we think the children will really like.” The Camrose Boys and Girls Club was formed in 1989 to give children and youth of all socio-economic backgrounds a safe and supportive place to experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop skills and confidence for life. “We exist to serve the youth of Camrose,” said James. Camrose Boys and Girls Club has received many compliments over the years for the work it does. “We have received some glowing reviews from our children and their families,” said program coordinator Trish James. “One of our boys, when asked what he thought about the program said it helped him be a kinder and a better person. That is pretty positive endorsement.” The Camrose Boys and Girls Club operates two main programs: Kid Way and Keystone. Kid Way is a membership club for children ages six to 12 that offers a variety of fun and meaningful social and recreational activities from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. In addition to receiving healthy snacks and education on healthy food choices, children take part in relaxed non-competitive sports and games, nature walks, park and playground crawls, tobogganing, skating and other outside activities. “We schedule outdoor

physical activities once a week or more, weather permitting said Rees. Kid Way helps children develop leadership skills and promotes volunteerism through the The Random Acts of Kindness project. “We have groups of children, staff and volunteers go into the community to help unsuspecting citizens by doing physical jobs like raking leaves or shovelling snow,” said Rees. Kid Way also provides a quiet area where children can work on the homework and receive help from staff. Kid Way rewards good behaviour (kindness to others, helping out, working to resolve conflicts) by distributing tokens that can be spent on items at the BG store. In 2014, the Boys and Girls Club received a grant from Canadian Tire that allowed children in Kid Way to participate in hockey, swimming lessons and soccer. “We are hoping to do most of those programs again, as well as some new ones, like TaeKwon-do and dancing, two of the things that were at the top of the list when we surveyed the children on what they wanted to do.” The youth are picked up from the six elementary schools throughout Camrose, and are transported to all external events and activities. “The transportation that we offer is complementary,” said Rees. The Boys and Girls Club Keystone program for youth ages 13 to 17 concentrates on five key areas: leadership, teamwork, healthy choices, service to club and community and learning for life. “We had 30 to 50 youth who were involved in the Keystone program last year compared to about 85 in Kid Way,” said Rees. “The cool thing about Keystone

Camrose Boys and Girls Club members, left to right, Amileah Sharp, Shae-lynn Larson, Baylie Brown, and Naomi Goliboski.

is that a lot of the kids will volunteer back into this Kid Way program. We try to cultivate a culture of giving back to the community and giving back to your organization and volunteering with Kid Way is one way for them to do that. They also volunteer their time in the community by helping out with Relay for Life, the Father’s Day picnic and Movie Marathon.” Apart from Kid Way and Keystone, the Camrose Boys and Girls Club offers a summer program that includes trips to a places like the Telus World of Science, Launch Pad (a trampoline park), the Edmonton Street Festival and the World Waterpark at West Edmonton Mall. “Our summer program is always filled to capacity and with the addition of our 21-passenger bus we are able to not only offer this program to more Kid Way age kids but also take along two of our Keystone youth as junior volunteers each week,” said Trish. “Our

bus is complete with a big screen television and DVD player to entertain the children as we hit the road.” Volunteers play a big role with the Camrose Boys and Girls Club, from sitting on the board to assisting with fundraising activities. The club had 225 volunteers (109 of them youth) in 2014 who donated 4,612 hours. “The majority of the hours were spent as direct time in the Kid Way and Keystone programs, where they (volunteers) enhanced the lives of children as they developed their own skills and experiences,” said Rees. The Camrose Boys and Girls Club believes its Kid Way and Keystone programs go a long way to contributing to the social skills of youth while helping them steer clear of pitfalls. “It is a proven fact that after school programs prevent crime,” said Rees. “Studies have shown that the number of crimes committed by youth triples

between 3 and 6 p.m. – the hours between which they are let out of school and their parents return home from work. Without anything to do, some youth engage in violent crimes, become the victims of violence, take up smoking or drinking, or take rides in vehicles that result in accidents. The risks are dramatically reduced for youth who are in after school programs.” Camrose Boys and Girls Club operates with two full-time staff (Rees and Trish), two part-time program workers and one summer program worker. The operating budget each year is $170,000, with Camrose and District Support Services providing 45 per cent of the funding, grants providing 25 per cent, and fundraising and community donations 30 per cent. The club waived fees in 2014 for 63 families to stay with its belief that no child should be denied because of financial reasons.

McKay back on track for indoor high jumping By Murray Green

Tim MacKay of Camrose is a fighter. The Camrose Composite High School high jump athlete was knocked out of track and field with ulcerative colitis that led to surgery and a delay in training. “It turned into a developmental year. I got pretty sick and was in the hospital for a month. I lost my muscle strength and almost all of my jump. I had to work really hard to get back to my previous height,” said Tim. Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the colon. The disease is a type of colitis, which is a group of diseases that

cause inflammation of the colon, the largest section of the large intestine, either in segments or completely. “I had ulcerative colitis all last year, I just didn’t think much of it. At the end of the outdoor season it started to get worse. My doctor said if a normal person, not an athlete, had it they would be passing out,” said Tim. “At the end of the outdoor season it started to get worse. The surgery eliminated my winter track season last year and training. It took me a while to get healthy again because I lost 30 pounds. I concentrated on getting back to where I was before, rather than focusing on improving. It set me a year back, but

I’m hoping a good off-season training period from now until January will put me in a position to obtain my goals this spring.” The Grade 11 student set a personal best height and earned a silver medal in high jump at the Athletics Canada Legion National Championships in Langley, B.C. in 2014. Tim leaped 1.86 metres to record his highest jump ever in competition. An Ontario high jumped reached 1.89m to edge him out of a gold medal. “I hit 1.90m since then at open provincials and set a record,” he said. “To still break a record after the year I had, was exciting. Normally, only improving four centimetres is not

something you would want. Under my circumstances it was good though.” Tim is setting his goal at the two metre mark next spring. “I will be getting that steady progression back by next January,” he said. The high jumper will be training and maintaining his routine over the winter months as well as playing volleyball and basketball as cross-training. The last meet that counts for the summer season is at the end of November at the U of A Butterdome. “I was able to hit 1.86m at high school provincials this year and then 1.90m. I felt that I was nearly back to where I was when the outdoor season ended,” said

Tim. “When I started again, I basically started over. In a way that was good because I really worked on my technique and became technically sound. Now I just have to get my strength back. It is easier to gain strength then improve techniques.” Although the symptoms of ulcerative colitis can sometimes diminish on their own, the disease usually requires ongoing treatment to go into remission. “Like other athletes who have various diseases, I can compete at a high level. I will just have to take medication to keep everything in check,” he said. “I try not worry about it. I should be alright to push myself hard again by January.”

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

Krystal Smith By Dan Jensen

The powerful 2015 Dodge Ram 1500s at Camrose Chrysler help you take on any job and save money doing it. The Ram 1500’s 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V6 rivals V8 output and capability yet is still able to deliver fuel economy of up to 8.4 litres per 100 km. Working with the TorqueFlite® eight-speed automatic transmission, it delivers class-leading low-end torque of 420 lb.-ft. at only 2,000 rpm, enough to tow 4,173 kg when properly equipped. “The 3.0 EcoDiesel is one of the most advanced diesel engines in the marketplace and is one you can count on to endure decades of hard labour,” said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Lincoln Manzevich. The EcoDiesel is built with a cylinder block and bedplate constructed of highstrength compact graphite iron, a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, durable aluminum alloy pistons, heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads, and oil injectors for each piston. An electronically controlled and watercooled Variable Geometry Turbocharger enhances durability and capability. The system provides critical turbine power at low engine speeds, helping ensure optimal power and performance at all times. State of the art selective catalytic reduction reduces emissions and

incorporates a unique Diesel Exhaust Fluid system that alerts the driver to low diesel levels while allowing the engine to maintain full power. The Ram 1500 also offers the choice of a 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 and a legendary 5.7 litre HEMI V8. The 3.6L Pentastar VVT V6 applies some of the most advanced automotive engine technologies available. Mated to the TorqueFlite® eight-speed automatic transmission, it delivers an exceptional balance of power, long-term durability, and new five-cycle highway fuel economy rating of up to 9.3 litres per 100 km. The 5.7L HEMI VVT V8 with FuelSaver multidisplacement system (MDS) technology delivers exceptional performance across the board. FuelSaver MDS technology transforms the mighty V8 into a fuel-sipping four-cylinder, while Variable Valve Timing (VVT) controls the valves in the most efficient manner. This allows for optimal engine breathing throughout the entire rpm range to deliver valuable increased torque for towing and hauling. The Short Runner Valve (SRV) active intake manifold controls air intake flow by changing port length based on engine rpm for enhanced horsepower and torque. 4x4 performance Selecting 4x4 on the

Ram 1500 can be as easy as pushing a button. The 4-HI setting locks both drive shafts for extra grip and pulling power to give you confident handling on slippery, wet and loose terrain. For the meanest terrain out there, the 4-LO position delivers a 2.64:1 gear reduction ratio for stump ripping, mountain climbing grip and power. With the Ram 1500’s available on-demand 4x4 system all you need to do is just set it and forget it. Four corner air suspension The remarkable ActiveLevel Four-Corner Air Suspension is an available system that improves control and ride quality. Active-Level technology ensures automatic levelling while under heavy payload, and is the foundation of a comprehensive system featuring five distinct operational heights (or modes). Audo Mode automatically adjusts at highway speeds, while Entry/Exit and the two Off-Road modes are managed manually via the integrated switch bank or the key fob. The standard rear suspension on the Ram 1500 is unmatched in the light-duty class. The class-exclusive multilink coil spring rear suspension technology is the preferred suspension system for rail cars. This suspension design offers strength, durability and exceptional ride

comfort without sacrificing capability. Design Ram 1500’s classic aggressive forward leaning grille, headlamps, hood and world class interior add up to premium quality, exceptional efficiency and a bold style that will satisfy even the most discerning truck driver. Models range from the well-equipped Ram ST to the ultra-luxurious Ram Laramie Limited. Cab configurations include regular, crew and quad cab. The available classexclusive RamBox® continues to set the trend for inventive, out-of-the-cargo-box thinking. This multi-faceted storage system includes two large, drainable, illuminated and lockable storage compartments on each side of the cargo bed which are spacious enough to hold a full golf bag or a number of power tools. The system also includes a cargo bed extender/divider which lets you customize the cargo bed area and extend usable bed length. Success in fire prevention By Dan Jensen

Camrose fire prevention officer Jeff Knopf knows he has done his job well when he pulls up to a home fire and sees the family gathered at their meeting spot. “So often this success is made possible by a working smoke alarm,” said Knopf. “I’ve been in homes fighting a fire when the smoke alarm continues to sound and continues to sound long after the fire is out. Firefighters put so much value in this; sometimes we even save the smoke detector after the fire as a souvenir of success. Smoke alarms save lives, it’s as simple as that.” Knopf has had many indications over his career that his fire prevention messages have made a difference. “I’ve been stopped in grocery stores by children who tell me things like ‘after you visited our class I told my mom to check the smoke alarm and the battery was dead, so we changed it,’” he said. “Or, ‘my dad didn’t know where the meeting spot is at home, but he does now.’ “You can’t say that a fire prevention program has failed because a fire starts.” In the business of fighting fires, Knopf feels that success is sometimes measured in preserving life. “Most of us will never experience what it feels like to lose a home to a fire, or, even worse, a loved one,” he said. “Firefighters are often the first to be with families as they experience the loss that a fire brings.” Knopf said it is difficult to judge a fire prevention program’s success based on guesses of how many fires were avoided. “When fires are reported, the fire department looks at things like area of origin, major sources of ignition, losses by acts or omissions, and the material that first ignites.”

Feth named ACAC Athlete of the Week By Murray Green

University of Alberta Augustana Vikings golfer Cole Feth was named the male Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) athlete of the week. He won the Open North Regional Tournament as an individual and helped the Vikings to a second place team finish at the Camrose Golf Course Sept. 19 and 20. “It was really nice to play at home in Camrose. It gave us home course advantage and probably gave every one of the players on the team a two or three shot advantage,” said Feth. “It was nice to have some individual success, but I wish that we had better fate as a team.” The Vikings had a 12 stroke advantage after the first round, but Grant MacEwan University, a yearly powerhouse for the last four years, played well in the second round to win the team event. “We never finished in the top three before, so this was a really big step (second place) for us,” said Feth. “We were a little nervous the second day because we were never in a position of leading a tournament before. I know I was nervous.” Feth shot rounds of 71 and 72 (first place overall) to help the Augustana Vikings team place second for the first time in the short history of Vikings golf. He didn’t show any nerves. “I felt good in both rounds and thought I was right there (near the top). Chase (teammate Martin) shot a 69 in the first round to put the pressure on me, which

helped. However, I saw him in places he shouldn’t have been in the second round, so I knew I gained a few strokes on him,” said Feth. “I capped it off nicely with a 50 yard chip in on the last hole to finish with a three. That was the difference in the end.” He anchored a very strong Vikings team that continues to improve, as all of the male Viking golfers qualified with a top 10 standing for the conference championship in Medicine Hat. “I was in the final group every time last year and I feel comfortable again this year. I didn’t close the deal last year, and it stung all winter. Braxton (teammate Fox) got to go to Montreal last year, and good for him, but I should have gone too. This year I was highly motivated to win, but I don’t want to be done with one. I want to win, but also I want the team to go to nationals as much as anyone,” said Feth. “MacEwan is tough to beat because they are eight guys deep and they can all play. I feel we gained a lot of experience today as a team. In talking to the guys, if we shave off a putt here, a chip there we are within reach. I thought of two or three shots each day that I thought I earned, but didn’t get. Five shots in a team event is nothing. I feel we are on a very good path here.” The college golf season is very short. “We will get together and see how we can improve,” Feth continued. “You can always get better at this game. We want to stay in the

top two because the top two qualify for nationals. Without a doubt, that’s the goal.” Augustana has more team depth this year and every player is a few strokes better than at the same time last season. “I haven’t won a tournament in a long time, so it feels really good and is a relief. I like the feel and it is a standard I want to set for myself,” said Feth. “This is the third year for the golfing program and we are already second, so it speaks well of the program and the future.” Cole, from Camrose, is a fifth year student enrolled in biology at Augustana. “We have had great sponsors this year which has helped. Colin Grindle sponsored the tournament. James Mayer at Central Agencies, Augustana staff and Byron Campbell added scholarships, so it has made a huge difference for the golfers as well.” MacEwan won the team event with four golfers recording a score of 580. Augustana, which never finished higher than fourth in a team event, shot 585 to finish just five strokes back of the strong golfing program. Red Deer came in third. Besides Feth securing the win with a 143, Chase Martin shot a 146, Michael Harrison counted a 147 and Braxton Fox fired a 149. The ACAC championships will be held on Oct. 3 and 4 at the Desert Blume Golf Club in Medicine Hat. The nationals are slated for Oct. 13 to 16 at the Chilliwack Golf Club in British Columbia.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Cole Feth captured the ACAC Open North Regional Tournament in Camrose by shooting a 143 over two days at the Camrose Golf Course. The Augustana Vikings placed second in the team event.

Kodiaks open home schedule with pair of victories By Murray Green

Veteran forward Nelson Gadoury scored two goals and assisted on another to help the Camrose Kodiaks to a 5-3 win over the Fort McMurray Oil Barons Sept. 20. He garnered the game winner less than five minutes to go in the third period. He put the game out of reach for the Oil Barons in the final minute with his second tally of the night. Angus Scott, Scott Ferguson and Liam Motley notched single markers in support on offence. “All of the boys are clicking well. We just have to get that defensive zone figured out,” said Cole McBride. “The offence is rolling and everything is going well right now.” Camrose outshot Fort McMurray 37-31 with goalie Brodan Salmond making 28 saves. The Kodiaks welcomed former goalie Patrick Gora from Prince George back to the team to add leadership between the pipes. The Kodiaks have won all four games the team played, but the club is only tied for fifth in goals against.

Nelson Gadoury of the Camrose Kodiaks fires a shot on the Olds Grizzlys net in the opening home game of the season. Camrose has started the season with five straight wins.

“We are working on tightening up defensively. I know it took me a while to learn the system and now our young guys are going through the same thing. The new guys are catching on quick, so we should have this figured out. Giving up three goals a game is too much. Now we have (goalie Patrick) Gora back to help us. It was

tough to see (Josh) Williams go because he is a good guy. Our offence is rolling, but we can’t be expected to score five goals every night,” added McBride. “The team defence needs to improve and that’s what we are working on. Gora played well for us last year and he will add that veteran reassurance in net for us.”

The 5-3 score and script were identical in the home opener against the Olds Grizzlys on Sept. 18. This time McBride netted the winner with less than five minutes left on the clock. He also added his second of the game in the last few seconds. “It felt good to score the winner. Everyone played well all night, except getting off our game in the middle of the third, but coach (Boris Rybalka) called a timeout to settle the guys down. We had a nice break out with Salmond throwing it (puck) along the wall to (Estian) Coetzee who got it up to me and I was lucky enough to score,” explained McBride. “As the other teams get better, you can’t afford to let in three goals against every game. It’s too risky to count on your offence for four or five goals every game.” Gadoury started the scoring in the first to give Camrose a 1-0 lead after the first frame. Slater Strong and Tanner Younghans added to the lead before the

Grizzlys rallied to tie the game in the third. After Olds tied the game in the second, McBride put the Kodiaks back on top with his two goals. Salmond stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced. The Kodiaks fired 48 at the Grizzlys net. “I want to have a good year and possibly go to college (Merrimack) next year. I want to get my confidence up by putting up some numbers, but also progress my game in the defensive end and improve as an all-around player,” said McBride. “Obviously the points are nice to get, but I want to help the team and that is going to be by improving a couple of notches on the defensive side as well.” Bear facts

The Kodiaks are currently on a three-game road trip. Camrose will be hosting the AJHL Showcase from Oct. 1 to 3. The Kodiaks take on Lloydminster on Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. and then Fort McMurray on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., with both games in the EnCana Arena.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

THANKS ALVIN RUDE AND FAMILY would like to thank all those who supported us in so many ways through the loss of our wife and mother, Alice. We would also like to thank the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital for their exceptional care. A BIG THANK YOU – To all the citizens and businesses of Camrose who have contributed and continue to contribute toward my travel expenses to make my ultrasound instruction trip possible for the medical staff in a health clinic in rural Haiti, I say “THANK YOU!” I leave Edmonton on Oct. 27, 2015 for a minimum of six weeks. Your encouragement and good wishes are very much appreciated. – Yours sincerely, Jim Sawchyn

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

NOTICE OF DEVELOPMENT PERMITS

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MY BACK YARD?

The City of Camrose is implementing an Area Structure Plan (ASP) requirement for all undeveloped areas in the City (excluding undeveloped internal areas and some ongoing subdivisions). An ASP is a long-term statutory plan that provides a detailed framework for future development of a parcel of land. Though ASPs are a general statement about future land uses in a new area, developers must thoroughly research their development plans and incorporate adequate servicing into the plan. Developers or landowners must demonstrate to Council the impact their proposals will have on the existing areas, on neighbouring communities, and on other parts of Camrose. You can have a say too! ASPs are presented to Council before being adopted by Bylaw. This is when community residents can become involved and share their thoughts and ideas. Below is a map showing potential areas for future ASPs. New Area Structure Plans will always be advertised for public input. To find out more information, contact Francisca Karl, Long-Range Planner at the City of Camrose. Phone 780672-4426 or email fkarl@ camrose.ca

Curling club prepares for new season Continued from page 36

The Little Rockers program for young curlers is back again with Augustana Vikings coach Roger Galenza heading the instruction. “The last time I talked to Roger he already had 46 students signed up, so they need to register right way because he may have to cap the number because of the number of coaches he has available,” said Wizniuk. The dues have stayed the same except for the seniors who curl twice a week.

“I would like to put on an advertisers fun day, so businesses can put in a team of four curlers. Our bonspiels are all set.” Camrose will hold the mixed doubles provincials for the third straight year. “The club is thinking about holding mixed doubles sessions to more curlers try the quicker game. It is ideal for couples to curl together. It is going to be an Olympic sport, so we want to get more interest locally.” Don Miller is back and currently working on going

the ice ready. “We will still have nine sheets this year. We will assess it again after the season. We want to get more interest in curling, so we can keep all the sheets in. We want to add fun nights so people can come out and try the sport with families,” said Wizniuk. “The Camrose Academy of Curling are going to have one hour of instruction on Mondays and then on Thursdays have a league to play games. This is for the high school curlers.”

In 1963 we opened the doors to Central Agencies in downtown Camrose. Our goal at the time, was to offer unparalleled service in insurance coverage to the residents of the city of Camrose as well as those who lived, farmed and operated businesses near the community. Over the years we sourced new insurance companies to represent. We ventured into the real estate business and added wonderful, conscientious and talented staff, including our son James, to the business. Thanks to you, our clients, and the dedication and commitment of our employees, our business has grown considerably. Our success, in turn, has allowed us to actively and proudly support a diversity of community initiatives, clubs, organizations and capital building projects. We have considered this not only a corporate responsibility, but also a privilege. Thank you for allowing us to make a difference! As another year of business rolls by, and as our beloved city continues to grow, we take this opportunity to thank our staff for their commitment to our customers. We’re honoured that some have invested their entire working career with Central Agencies. We thank our clients for entrusting us to provide responsible levels of insurance protection, and for relying on our people and our service when buying or selling homes, farms and businesses. It’s been a treasured journey so far. We look forward to working with you now, and for many more years.

My last day on the job will be September 30th. After 41 years at a truly fulfilling career, I am retiring. I take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of clients with whom I have had the privilege of doing business. Many of you were repeat clients - a lot of you entrusted me for a long string of transactions as phases of your personal or business life changed. I also take this opportunity to publicly thank Norman, Betty and James Mayer – the best employers one could ever hope to have. Though I will leave my office on Wednesday, I leave behind an exceptional group of professional realtors at Central Agencies Inc. Each is more than capable of assisting you whether buying or selling. Thanks again for having counted on me! I hope to cross paths with you again soon as I enter this next step of life. – Darrell Rosland, Realtor Central Agencies Inc.
