Decorating for Halloween …has really caught on in our community in recent years. And why not? Fall weather is often very favourable for creating spooky settings. With October 31st less than two weeks away, watch, as you tour the streets of Camrose, for ghosts, goblins, bats and creepy crawlers peeking out from behind trees, hedges and through windows. Admire the creativity, dream up your own ideas, and chuckle at the wit and imagination that others offer as they aim to bring a smile to your face.

CDSS funding increase lessens the pressure on municipalities By Dan Jensen
Camrose and District Support Services will have an additional $46,413 to plug into this and next year’s budget as a result of the provincial government’s decision to provide an additional $10 million for programs that support children, families and seniors. “Our government is committed to increasing FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) program funding to meet the changing and expanding needs across the province,” said Minister of Human Services Irfan Sabir. “Albertans rely on these programs to support their well-being and strengthen their communities.” The increase in FCSS funding is the first the provincial government has provided over the last five years as part of an agreement under which it is responsible for 80 per cent of the cost of programs and the municipalities that offer them 20 per cent. The freeze has impacted the programs in such a way that municipalities, in order to keep up with increased costs, have been forced to contribute more than their 20 per cent share. “We received over contributions of almost $41,000 from our partner municipalities (City, County and towns and villages in Camrose County) this year to help make our ends meet,”
said CDSS executive director Margaret Holliston last week. The funding increase will push the amount that the City of Camrose will be required to commit under the 80/20 cost sharing agreement to $102,271 in 2016, which is $8,000 less than it has paid, with the over contribution, for the last two years. “We don’t anticipate having to ask for over contributions from our municipal partners for 2016,” said Holliston. While the additional provincial grant will increase the total 2016 funding available to CDSS by approximately $15,000 to $20,000 (even with the over contributions taken out), CDSS does not expect it will be able to fund new programs. That, however, is a decision that will have to be made when the CDSS board discusses its budget on Oct. 26. “We will have a few extra dollars this year that we can carry into next year’s budget so that will help, but it is really hard to say what the bottom line next year will be in terms of increased revenue,” shared Holliston, adding that programs that are looking for new funds should not look at the new revenue and feel they can count on CDSS for support. “We are going to be looking at our currently funded programs first and see what
Camrose and District Support Services executive director Margaret Holliston.
their needs are. We will then see what is left over after the budget deliberations. We are not going to necessarily disburse it all and will be very cautious and how we use it. We may partner with an organization to bring in a guest speaker, for example, but, because of the increased costs, that is about all the additional money that we would have.” The provincial government sees the additional investment as a way of helping FCSS and municipalities get back to where they need to be in terms of services provided. Approximately $7.5 million of the $10 million that has been announced will be distributed to all participating municipalities and Metis settlements, while the
remaining $2.5 million will be distributed to the communities that have experienced substantial population growth. “The minister (Sabir) has said that we are basically recovering at a rate of roughly two per cent per year for the last five years, over which FCSS didn’t have any increases in its grant,” said Holliston. “With the money we are receiving we are basically just catching up.” The news of the provincial increase was welcomed at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association meeting in Calgary, where Finance Minister Joe Ceci once again confirmed the provincial government intends to increase FCSS funding from its current level of $86 million to
$100 million over the next four years. “It is hard to say whether or not we get another increase in 2016 to help us get to that target,” said Holliston, “but we are expecting a couple more increases over the next few years.” Holliston expressed appreciation to CDSS partner municipalities for providing extra financial support of its programs while the government was deciding on future funding directions. ‘Our municipal partners helped keep us going and got us to the point where we are now,” she said. “Now there will be some relief on our municipal partners and we will be able to cover our costs better as we move forward.”
Friends of STARS seeking local support By Dan Jensen Camrose Friends of STARS is seeking support for its 21 annual Dine and Dance fundraiser to be held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition Nov. 7. “We’re looking for donations of vacation packages, dining certificates, sporting event tickets, spa packages, camping accessories, fitness memberships themed gift baskets and concert tickets that can be auctioned at our live or silent auctions,” said Camrose Friends of STARS board member Tim Vant. “Any support we receive will be greatly appreciated.” The Dine and Dance fundraiser makes a big difference to the critically ill and injured patients that STARS transports every year. The 2014 event raised $36,392 for STARS programs and services, including aircraft fuel and maintenance, emergency medical communications through the STARS Emergency Link Centre as well as educational and research resources like the STARS Mobile Simulation program
and the STARS Operational Outreach Program. “It is evident that the community sees the value of supporting STARS,” said Friends of STARS secretary Bob Grant. “We would like to thank everyone who has made the Dine and Dance such a success and has helped keep STARS in the sky.” STARS flew 1,839 missions during the 201415 fiscal year from bases in Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie, includ-
ing 34 to Camrose (2014). In a number of cases, the quick response times made the difference between life and death, full recovery or permanent damage. “The more quickly a patient receives treatment, the much better their recovery,” says the STARS website. “Timely treatment of stroke, heart attacks or brain injuries can save more than $1 million per patient. Patients transported by helicopter ambulance are more likely to survive than
those transported by ground ambulance, even though they are more severely injured.” Camrose resident Laurie Lindstrand was helped by STARS 18 years ago after the truck he was in was broad sided by a semi trailer. Though his memories of the flight in the air ambulance are vague, he was left with the knowledge that it probably saved his life. “They were very good with me. We were there right away,” said Lindstrand, who has been a vert strong supporter of STARS since that accident. “I thank STARS and the Lord, the doctors and nurses for me being here today.” Former Friends of STARS board member Danielle Husak credits STARS with saving her life after suffering a fractured back, fractured pelvis, knee injury and multiple abrasions in an accident that happened when she was riding her mountain bike in Sherwood Park in 2006. “I remember being loaded into STARS,” Husak said, adding that she met
the flight crew a year and a half after the accident. “The pilots were awesome. You can clearly tell they love their jobs. They say it’s a rewarding career because people come back and say ‘thank you’. I owe them everything.” Husak spent 40 days at the U of A Hospital in Edmonton and still has hip and back pain and arthritis in her spine. “You can sit there and say ‘why me?’ or you can continue plodding through life and say ‘I’m lucky’,” she said. “So many good things have come out of a horrible situation.” Josh Bhikoo was 31 when he first went into a Drumheller hospital suffering from chest pain and was first diagnosed with pneumonia. He went back later that day and when he collapsed, the decision was made to call STARS to transport him to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. He later learned that decision probably helped save his life. He was told that had he arrived much later, he may not have survived. Continued on page 11

CAYRAN to hold safety check stops at OLMP and CCHS By Dan Jensen
The Camrose and Area Youth Risk Awareness Network (CAYRAN) will be reminding teens of the dangers of not wearing seatbelts, texting while driving, aggressive driving and driving while impaired during safety check stops at CCHS and Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School Oct. 20 and 22 respectively. “The students who leave the school will immediately go through a safety check stop where they will be given information on safe driving practices,” said Const. John Fernhout, crime prevention officer with the Camrose Police Service, which is one of the members of
CAYRAN, along with Camrose RCMP, EMS, Camrose Fire Department, Alberta Health Services, Battle River School Division and the Alberta Office of Traffic Safety. The safety check stops are being conducted as part of a National Teen Driver Safety Week observance (Oct. 19 to 25), the aim of which is to reduce the number of unnecessary teen road related injuries and deaths. “Canadian youth between the ages of 16 and 19 remain at a higher risk of death per kilometre than any other age group,” said Const. Fernhout. “And while young people only make up
13 per cent of all licenced drivers in this country, they account for approximately one quarter of all road-related injuries and fatalities. Most of these injuries and deaths can be prevented. As we know, driver distraction is a factor in 15 to 19 per cent of all fatal collisions involving teen drivers.” National Teen Driver Safety Week is being promoted by Parachute Canada.org, which is encouraging young people to let their friends know that teen driver safety is a huge issue in Canada. According to Parachute, one in four young adults know someone who has been impacted as a result of distracted driv-
ing, and that while almost all young adults feel that texting and driving is very dangerous, over half still admit to doing it anyway. “Using your smartphone while driving quadruples your risk of a crash and taking your eyes off the road for more than two seconds doubles your risk of getting into a collision,” states the Parachute Canada website. “Young adults believe that distracted driving is not as dangerous as impaired driving and almost 40 per cent of adults do not consider using a smartphone while stopped at a traffic light to be distracted driving. Cell phones and driving don’t mix.”
Preventable injuries kill more Canadian children than any single disease, and more youth than all other causes combined. Each year in Canada, preventable injuries cause 16,000 deaths, 60,000 disabilities, 3.5 million emergency room visits, and a $27 billion economic burden to the Canadian economy. Worst of all, one child dies every nine hours. Parachute’s injury prevention solutions, knowledge mobilization, public policy, and social awareness efforts are designed to help keep Canadians safe. Parachute’s vision is an injury-free Canada with Canadians living long lives to the fullest.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson
Letters to the Editor
Are you a diver or a scanner?
In Barbara Sher’s book I Could Do Anything if I Only Knew What It Was, a chapter about “Divers and Scanners” made lightbulbs go off in my mind. Some people are Divers – they have a dominant passion and love to learn more and more about it to deepen their expertise. Divers might spend a lifetime in one field, becoming ever more expert in narrower areas (not just physician but surgeon; not just surgeon but heart surgeon; not just heart surgeon but aorta replacement surgeon). If you’re happy being completely absorbed by one field, Barbara Sher would call you a Diver. Examples of Divers are professional musicians, scientists, mathematicians, athletes and accountants. Our North American culture tends to admire Divers – the specialized experts. Other people are Scanners – interested in many things and reluctant to settle into one field. Scanners might love to read and write, fix and invent things, play hockey and learn tai chi, design projects and businesses, meditate and sing. Did you notice the word “and” rather than “or”? Scanners don’t love to do one thing or the other; they love to do them all. Scanners might be fascinated to learn how to play bridge or paint a house but once they’re good at it, might never do it again. Scanners often become experts in several fields. They study deeply and do total immersion – for a while. Then one day they’re bored and look for what else is out there. One famous Scanner was Leonardo da Vinci – artist, scientist and inventor of entire new fields. Our North American culture is often less impressed with Scanners. Shouldn’t they settle down to one career or passion? ***
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. By the time this letter appears in the paper the election will be over and we will know who is the new government. But I want to refute some of the statements made by MP Kevin Sorenson at the all candidates’ forum as quoted in the Oct. 13 issue of The Camrose Booster. He is using the mantra that his party is using to get the farmers to vote for the Conservatives.
1. He states farmers had to sell to the Canadian Wheat Board and buy their own wheat back. This was only the few who sought niche markets and felt they could do better themselves. They had to buy it back at the suggested PRO (projected total price for that year). The CWB returned approximately 80 per cent of the selling price to the farmer; it took a year to get fully paid for our crop, but after the first year we were getting paid for a crop every year, whereas in 2012, when the old CWB was disbanded, the multinationals have been using a basis (tookage) of $3 to $4 per bushel. A professor at the University of Saskatchewan calculated that the prairie farm economy has lost from $4 to $5 billion since the CWB demise. This has gone to off shore shareholders instead of to the farming community. 2. He stated that pasta
plants, malsters and others popping up. In fact, there hasn’t been one new facility established. 3. The central agency that kept the shipping of the right grade at the right time for ships coming to port (the CWB) was dismantled and not replaced by another entity to direct the shipping of prairie grain. Each grain company wanted to ship their own grain and we saw the mix up that produced in ships being lined up at port waiting for the right grain to get loaded, with much demmurage being charged back to the farmers. 4. The federal agriculture minister promised a farmer vote on the CWB question, but after the last election where the Conservative Party received a majority, they reneged and unilaterally dissolved the CWB as we knew it. Bernie von Tettenborn, Camrose
Rotary supports Days for Girls
As I read, I realized I was a Scanner. I wanted to be a “generalist specialist” – knowledgeable about many things but not locked into any of them. I looked at my career(s): typist and layout artist; teacher; community social services manager; organizational consultant. Starting a project-based business was perfect because I could learn about different things and meet different kinds of people without having to change employers! ***
A few days ago I thought about Divers and Scanners as I watched a Tedx talk, “Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling” by Emily Wapnick. What Barbara Sher called Scanners, Emily Wapnick called “Multi-potentialites” – people with many interests and creative pursuits. She pointed out that people ask children, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” as if there would be just one thing. Sometimes people see “multi-potentiality” as a limitation or affliction to be overcome. She sees three strengths. Idea synthesis – because multi-potentialites dive into multiple fields, they sometimes see connections and patterns that are less obvious to those who stay in one field or environment. Rapid learning – when multi-potentialites get interested in something they immerse themselves in it. They’re used to being beginners so willing to try new things. Many skills are transferable across disciplines. Multi-potentialites bring everything they’ve learned to new areas, so they’re seldom starting from scratch. Adaptability – multi-potentialites are usually able to change into whatever is needed in a situation. Fast Company magazine says adaptability is the most important skill to develop in the 21st century as the world changes quickly and unpredictably. ***
Research suggests that “diver” or “scanner” is not something we learn; we are hard-wired with one or the other tendency. The world needs all of us – divers and scanners; deep specialists and broad generalists. Some of the best teams are made up of a diver and scanner. The diver can dive in deep and implement ideas while the scanner has a breadth of knowledge and perspective to see other possibilities. The key point? Whichever we are, we will be happier if we do everything in our power to align our careers and our lives with our natural inner wiring. Whichever we are, we will also be happier if we seek out and learn to work with and appreciate those who are not like us. The world needs all of us, and we need each other. ***

Thirteen Rotarians from Camrose travelled to Dawson Creek, B.C. Oct. 2 to 4 for the annual District 5370 Rotary Conference. The Daybreak Club used the conference as an opportunity to spread the word about Days for Girls. This project, now in its second year in Camrose, seeks to provide every girl and woman on the planet with sustainable feminine hygiene by the year 2020. Days for Girls International has teams and chapters working all over the world, sewing kits and distributing both kits and education to girls across the planet. Each year, thou-
sands of girls leave school when they reach puberty because of a lack of feminine hygiene options. These kits help to ensure that girls stay in school, end the cycle of poverty and abuse, build communities and achieve dignity. Moisture proof shields are components in every Days for Girls kit. If we can send astronauts into space for months at a time – we should be able to solve this earthly problem. On Oct. 17, the third major sewing event for the Days for Girls Camrose Team was held at the Certified Training Group, 505150 Street. The goal for the day was to complete 120
kits. Kits are distributed in Kenya, Ghana and Dominican Republic; this translates to 96 years of school days. Days for Girls has been reversing the cycle of poverty in more than 75 countries on seven continents since 2008 with over 100,000 kits and counting. We will continue to add to that impact. The Days for Girls motto is Every girl. Everywhere. Period. Days for Girls Canada is a registered charity and all monetary donations will receive a charitable donation receipt. Friends of STARS seeks support Continued from page 4
In Calgary, physicians performed an anoplasty and put a stent in his heart. Bhikoo was on life support for the next nine days and awoke on the 10th day. His recovery from that point was fairly seamless as he slowly began increased physical activity. STARS nurses and paramedics are experienced, typically with at least five years professional background in hospitals or ambulance services. Those selected to join must then successfully complete a comprehensive and intensive 10-week induction training program that exceeds 200 hours of instruction before they can accept their first mission. After that, a minimum of 96 hours of ongoing specialized air ambulance and critical care training is required annually for as long as they work for STARS. Transport physicians come from backgrounds that include specialty level emergency medicine and other critical care fields. Like our nurses and paramedics, STARS transport physicians work in the local community and must meet ongoing training requirements. Camrose Friends of STARS was formed shortly after STARS opened a base in Edmonton in 1991. In the 20 years it has held its Dine and Dance it has raised almost $800,000. In 2006, Camrose Friends of STARS received the volunteer spirit award. Anyone wishing to contribute to the Dine or Dance fundraiser or purchase tickets is encouraged to call 780-781-6888.

Conspiracy of Hope at Norsemen Inn Oct. 21 By Dan Jensen
After seeing how close friends were affected by suicide, Suzanne Sagmeister stepped into action. She put her career on hold and formed Conspiracy of Hope, a photographic and musical movement to create conversation, inspire hope and save lives. “I decided to use my passion for story telling through images to profile suicide survivors,” said Suzanne, who will be bringing Conspiracy to Hope to the Norsemen Inn for two hours, from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 21. “I photographed people whose lives have been forever altered and interviewed them to uncover their message of hope. I also reached out to my musical friends to come together; united by a greater purpose, to create a song that would inspire those contemplating and affected by suicide.” Each and every person who is involved in Conspiracy
of Hope has, in one way or another, felt the devastation of suicide. “It is anchored in integrity and buoyed with the knowledge that, together, we can make a difference and save a life,” said Suzanne. Conspiracy of Hope has travelled more than 50,000 km and appeared in every province in Canada over the last 18 months. At each stop Suzanne spends time with suicide survivors – someone who has tried to take his or her own life or someone who has been left behind – and captures his or her stories for an upcoming book to be entitled Life After Dark. “It is one of the greatest gifts I have ever been given – to have somebody who has been through such terrible tragedy and pain, share their stories so openly with me,” said Suzanne.
The presentations in Alberta are being supported by ATB Financial. “We’re concerned about mental wellness, so when we were given the opportunity to get involved at a grass roots level like this we jumped at the chance,” said ATB Camrose assistant branch manager Stacey Lecomte, adding that Canadian Mental Health Association will be present to provide counselling support. “When you see what Conspiracy of Hope is doing it is difficult to remain unchanged. If, by sponsoring this, we can make a difference in the community, or even one person’s life, it is worth it. “I am hoping the presentation in Camrose will be standing room only.” Suzanne is hoping that by getting people to talk about suicide that she can
remove the stigma that surrounds it. “She would like to get people to talk freely about it, as they would talk about a broken bone, cancer or other diseases,” said Stacey. One in five Canadians is affected by mental illness. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in Canada for young people aged 10 to 24. In 2009, Statistics Canada reported that the suicide rate for males is three times higher than the rate for females, and in 2011, 3,728 Canadians died by suicide. That number is now estimated to be 4,000 per year. “Suicide is 100 per cent preventable,” said Suzanne. “It is our belief that, together, we can save lives.” Conspiracy of Hope is free and refreshments will be served For more information contact Stacey at ATB Financial at 780-679-5295.

RE/MAX Home of the Week Coats for Kids at Duggan Mall Great West Park location Oct. 21 and 22 By Dan Jensen
You may not wear it as much anymore, but that doesn’t mean your old winter coat can’t still serve a useful purpose. Centra Cam Vocational Training Association’s Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot is collecting clean winter wear in good condition to distribute at its annual Coats for Kids event at Duggan Mall Oct. 21 and 22. “We will be set up in the former bingo hall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday,” explained Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot (ECFD) coordinator Jaimie Griffiths. “Winter wear will be available at no charge, however cash donations are greatly appreciated.” Coats that are not given away at Duggan Mall will be available throughout the year at ECFD. “You won’t need a referral from a local agency to pick one up from the Mall, but you will need one once you come to the depot,” said Griffiths. The Coats for Camrose event handed out over 1,000 pieces of winter clothing in 2014, including coats, mitts, toques, sweaters, boots, scarves and winter work wear. Centra Cam Vocational Training Association, through the Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot, has successfully supported over 27,500 families who have been faced with emergency situations. “We have provided furniture, clothing and essential items to people in the community facing crisis situations and economic hardships,” said Griffiths, adding that the depot has been able to keep its shelves quite full most of the year. “Our community is very fortunate to have this service and I know the people who use it are very appreciative of the help they are able to receive.” Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot had close to 2,000 referrals in 2014, many of which were from referring agencies such as the Camrose Women’s Shelter, Alberta Works and Human Services, AISH, Camrose churches, the Battle River School Division, Camrose Neighbor Aid Center and Camrose Open Door Association. Referrals are issued to one person per immediate family. Oftentimes, one referral will be used for a large family. Currently, the Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot has one coordinator and six staff. Donations of items for Coats for Camrose are gratefully accepted at the depot at 4918-46 Street, or in the bins that have been set up at Duggan Mall. More information is available by calling 780-608-1681.

The Hospice Society of Camrose and District held a conference on Thursday, Oct. 1 titled “Being with Dying: Care, Communication and Compassion.” The conference was held at the Norsemen Inn and was attended by 120 participants. Health professionals, volunteers, chaplains and family caregivers attended the one day workshop. Dr. Shane Sinclair opened the day with a presentation titled “Compassion: The Essential Ingredient in Palliative Care.” Dr. Sinclair shared his recent research and many of his experiences in palliative care. He did an excellent job explaining compassion, how it is demonstrated and expressed to those we care for. Cheryl Nekolaichuk offered the afternoon keynote presentation “Sharing Hopeful Moments: Supporting Patients and Families along their Palliative Journey.” Cheryl reviewed different types of hope, how it can be expressed and offered several suggestions as to how to offer hope throughout the palliative journey. The Hospice Society is very grateful to these excellent speakers for sharing their time and expertise with our audience in Camrose. The remainder of the day was filled with breakout sessions provided by Dr. Sinclair, Dr. David Goa, Bill Harder, Ravidass and Colette Howery and Pam Cummer. All sessions were popular with many participants commenting they had a difficult time deciding which ones to attend. This conference was made possible by a generous donation from the Battle River Community Foundation. The Hospice Society’s goal is to provide palliative education to our community and as evidenced by the attendance at this conference, it was very well received and appreciated by individuals from all walks of life. The Hospice Society will begin to promote its annual “Lights to Remember” campaign where light bulbs may be purchased in memory of a loved one. The society will sell the bulbs at the Farmers’ Market every Saturday in December. All fundraising done by the society is for the purpose of the development of a Hospice House in Camrose. Plans for this building were revealed at the Hospice Society of Camrose and District’s annual general meeting on Sept. 16. The society is proposing the development of a Hospice House which will house end of life care beds, accommodations for family members and programming unique to the needs in Camrose and District. Keep an eye on our website, camrosehospice.org for updates.

Darrell Rosland retires after 41 years in real estate By Dan Jensen “Real estate was always one of the things that interested me,” said Darrell Rosland, who retired Sept. 30 after 41 years of matching customers and properties. Darrell’s start in the business came in 1974 with Central Agencies Inc., after 15 years of working for businesses throughout Alberta, Ontario and B.C. Looking back over the years, he is grateful for the experience and valuable knowledge he gained with different employers. “The things that I learned prepared me for all that was to come in the world of real estate,” he said. “I knew by that time the importance of taking the initiative and making timely decisions.” First years The first three older houses Darrell sold were for $10,500, $11,900 and $16,200. Those same houses would now sell for $125,000, $135,000 and $170,000 respectively. “Camrose was starting to grow as a city in the mid 1970s, so it was a good time to be selling real estate,” said Darrell. The first “newer” house Darrell sold was a 1,050 square foot three bedroom, for $34,000. Today that same house would sell in the range of $260,000. “Residential lots in the new city subdivision south of Duggan Mall were selling in the range of $9,000 to
Darrell Rosland has retired after 41 years as a realtor
$12,000 said Darrell. “Now they sell in the range of $120,000 to $200,000.” The first brand new engineered home sold by Darrell in 1974 was a 1,120 square foot three bedroom/ one and one-half bath. The price was $39,000. Today, a similarly-sized home with a two car garage would sell in the range of $400,000. Farm land values have increased at a similar pace as residential. In 1975, Darrell
sold 80 acres bordering Highway 21 for $29,000. Those same 80 acres today would sell for close to $300,000. “One of the biggest things I have noticed over the years is how the prices have climbed and how people have become accustomed to higher prices,” said Darrell. “I’ve seen prices drop a few times but each time they have come back and gone even higher than they were before the drop.”
The process for completing a transaction has become much more complicated. In the 1970s the listing form was a small 4 x 8 inch document. The Offer to Purchase was a 8.5 x 14 inch document. Both the listing form and the Offer to Purchase had all the required legal information on the back, and were explained in plain English so that everyone could understand them. Today they are 12 and 20 page documents respectively and can be intimidating for a buyer. When Darrell first started, all properties were sold “buyer beware.” Today the buyer has more protection and a good overview of the property because of the availability of a home inspection. Changes in technology Darrell is amazed when he looks at how much technology has changed since he first entered the business. His first mobile phone was large and sat on the car floor, with a big box of technology in the trunk. The area of service was limited and unpredictable. This has now been replaced with a small hand held cell phone that can be placed in the pocket and has the capability of calling anywhere in the world. The fax machine, iPhone, iPad and computers have made it possible to do all real estate transactions world wide in seconds. High rates Darrell will never forget
the impact that very high interest rates had on the Camrose real estate market in the early 1980s. “That was about the only time that we really had any number of foreclosures,” he said. “Most of those involved AHMC, which was allowing buyers to purchase property with a five per cent down payment, which left no real equity in the property. This was a very distressing time, seeing people losing their homes and farms.” Helping customers Darrell said the most rewarding part of being a realtor for him was meeting people and helping them find a property that suited their needs. He realizes he was fortunate and blessed over the years with great customers, many of whom became repeat customers a number of times. He feels privileged to have been able to live, work and raise a family in the beautiful city of Camrose. He is grateful to Norm Mayer, of Central Agencies, who became not only his employer for 41 years, but also a mentor and friend. He is also appreciative of his wife, Lila, of 51 years, and his family, for their support and encouragement over the years. Darrell would like to express his thanks to all his customers for entrusting him with their real estate requirements.
Round Hill 4-H Multi Club to start a new year Oct. 28 The Round Hill 4-H Multi Club is set to start the new club year with its first meeting Oct. 28 at the Round Hill Community Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cleaver Kids from six
to eight are welcome, as are new members who are nine before Jan. 1 of the club year. In keeping with Halloween, there is a farmers’ market on Oct. 26 at
the community hall and, if they wish, kids may carve a pumpkin to bring and enter into the pumpkin carving contest that day. There will be a costume parade as well. We have added
some new leaders, and will be introducing sewing and other lifeskills projects, as well as the opportunity to try some small animal projects if the interest is there. Some
new sponsor initiatives are being promoted where 4-H clubs can video their activities, and we have a new logo to show off. For information call 780903-9189.

Aykroyd, Belushi produce The Blues Brothers concert By Murray Green Kieron Lafferty (Elwood) was picked by the Dan Aykroyd team to be his successor in The Blues Brothers Revue. The show at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre is set for Saturday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m. “It’s a great honour to be playing Elwood and have Dan’s input into the show,” said Lafferty. “It’s a classic comedy role and I have to play it straight and put some humour within that.” Aykroyd and Judith Belushi Pisano (late John’s wife)wanted a show that carried on the wonderful memories of the major film, filled with the great music and characters. “I saw the movie and being Canadian, I was familiar with the blues scene in Toronto and Ottawa. I was a musician first before I got into acting,” explained Lafferty. “Elwood is the result of fusing two people together from the blues scene that I was familiar with. The comedy and music go so well together, so it is a natural thing. A lot of things from the movie ring true when you are on the road. I can relate to the characters.” The Blues Brothers Revue pays homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, gos-
pel and soul music. Under the musical direction of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Paul Shaffer, the high-energy eight-piece Intercontinental Rhythm and Blues Revue Band delivers a big sound, performed with the passion and precision of the original Blues Brothers band. “You couldn’t ask for anybody better than Paul Shaffer to be involved. Chicago is very much like Toronto and the whole Great Lakes area loves blues music. Shaffer is from Thunder Bay and understands our show and likes to mix it up once in a while for us,” said Lafferty.
Laying down a playlist that’s a virtual encyclopedia of American music, the revue strikes the right balance of humor, music and mayhem that was featured in 1978 when the original act debuted on Saturday Night Live. “I always liked their schtick on the show and followed them as actors. This current show has been running for four years. It is a extension of a show we did called Blues Brothers Revival. One led to the other. This one is made to represent Jake and Elwood as you would have seen them in concert. It
HOURS: Sunday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.
is about the original Jake and Elwood.” The show has been refined to be as original as possible. “Kieron and Wayne Catania (Jake) are not imitators, they live the music and embody those characters. They understand the spirit of The Blues Brothers and revel in the joy of being Jake and Elwood,” said Judy Belushi. The music comes alive with “Shout,” “Gimme Some Lovin,” “Sweet Home Chicago” and the signature classic, “Soul Man.” The Blues Brothers perform a live concert that combines the comedy and hits from the original 1980 blockbuster film and subsequent albums with a multi-media presentation that combines the music with an audio/ video introduction that puts the original concept of Jake and Elwood as front men for a fictitious American blues and soul band into historical perspective. “People can expect some good music, mayhem and definitely crowd participation. If people want to get up and shake a tail feather, they are absolutely encouraged and welcomed to do that,” said Lafferty. “We are looking forward to playing in western Canada
again. We perform a lot in the States and our agent is in the States. Once in a while, we have to say don’t forget about our brothers up north. Canadians are huge fans and our families are here. That’s what happened: we put pressure on him. We were going to play Seattle and Oregon, so why not go into western Canada and to Camrose.” It’s no accident that the show has succeeded in bringing the irreverent characters that have resonated with people around the world back to life, reminding everyone why Jake and Elwood catapulted into a cultural phenomenon—a musical, comedic and cinematic legend. Not only are both outstanding musicians, their speaking and singing voices mirror the characters as alter egos. “We like to get into the community and get a feel for it. You’re in the heart of beef country, so we will hit a restaurant to find a steak,” he laughed. “It is about traveling in our country as well and we want to experience Camrose We want an experience, not just a show.” The box office is open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

WHO
MLA Update Bruce Hinkley, MLA, Wetaskiwin-Camrose
Changes made under Premier Rachel Notley and Alberta’s NDP government: banned corporates and union donations to political parties; increased funding to education to ensure 12,000 new students had teachers in the fall of 2015; scrapped proposed health care tax; raised taxes on corporations and the wealthy, while maintaining Alberta as the lowest taxed province in Canada; froze post-secondary tuition rates; funded health care to prevent the layoffs of thousands of health care workers and ensure quality of services; raised the minimum wage by $1; resource royalty review board analyzing feedback from public consultations; appointed Andrew Leach of the University of Alberta to lead a panel on Alberta’s climate change strategy; health minister Hoffman directed Alberta Health Services to take no further steps in expanding the level of laboratory services delivered by private entities; created a ministry for the Status of Women; apologized for Alberta’s role in residential schools; launched a review of all programs and policies to identify ways to implement UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; created Canada’s first gender-balanced cabinet; called for a public inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women; established an all-party committee on democratic reform; delivered $876.9 million of funding for local infrastructure to ensure stable support for the long term plans of communities across the province; funded up to 400 more midwife births in 2015; created grants to fund 76 local projects to prevent family violence, sexual violence and child sexual abuse; announced a new cancer centre will be built at Foothills Medical Centre campus in Calgary; took menthol cigarettes off store shelves; Premier Notley promoted Alberta as an attractive place for investment, a responsible energy producer and sources of diversified
goods and services in Montreal, New York and Toronto; created new and improved tools and services for entrepreneurs interested in starting or expanding their tourism business; acted swiftly to support farmers struggling through 2015 summer drought conditions; delivered Alberta’s first community response grants aimed at supporting local action against elder abuse; committed to a new Municipal Government Act by Spring 2016 to improve how municipalities work together; will deliver a budget which provides stable funding, moves to a balanced budget and stimulates the economy and job creation. Our government has provided more than $24 million to projects that will support drinking water and wastewater projects in Alberta. We are investing in infrastructure that improves the quality of life in smaller communities such as Breton which has received $142,500 for water treatment plant disinfection upgrades and the Town of Ponoka which received $299,925 for their ammonia treatment wastewater discharge. Funding for Family and Community Support Services programs was increased by $10 million dollars to meet the changing and expanding needs of children, families and seniors across the province. Some 319 municipalities and Metis settlements in Alberta receive FCSS grants. Human Services also invests $298 million in prevention and early
intervention for families and children. October is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Every child deserves to be safe, and free from abuse or neglect. All Albertans can learn about how to prevent child abuse and report any situation in which they believe a child or youth is being abused or neglected. A child who is abused “may” appear to be continually hungry, dirty or unsuitably dressed for the weather; appear to be withdrawn or aggressive; or have unexplained bruises or injuries. There are many forms of abuse, including emotional, sexual, physical and neglect. Each can have devastating and even permanent effects on the well-being and development of children and youth. If you suspect a child is being abused, phone the confidential Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-387-KIDS (5437) or contact your local Child and Family Services Office, Delegated First Nations Agency or the police. A number of community and government services and programs are available to help families provide nurturing, safe environments for their children and youth, and to prevent situations that may lead to abuse. For Information and support, contact your local Family and Community Support Services office, Parent Link Centre or visit www.humanservices. alberta.ca. And finally in this update I want to mention that the royal review panel is taking written submissions until Nov. 1. They can be mailed to: Royalty Review, 8th floor, North Petroeum Plaza, 9945 - 108th Street, Edmonton, T5K 2G6. Watch for announcements about the tourism entrepreneurial workshops focusing on opportunities in Alberta’s tourism industry. Diversifying our economy is essential. Tourism creates jobs (in 2013 there were more than 127,00 full time equivalent tourism-related jobs.) Also in 2013, there were more than 34 million visits to Alberta and visitor spending was $8 billion.
Rash of stolen vehicles in city October 15
On Aug. 1, the Camrose Police Service entered into a stolen auto investigation after a 1997 GMC Sierra was reported stolen. The vehicle was recently located in a rural area near Saddle Lake. The investigation is ongoing. Police received a complaint of a Dodge Charger being stolen from a residence in the west end of Camrose.
Police would like to remind citizens to ensure their vehicles are locked at all times while on the street. October 14
A complaint was received from a male who stated that his daughter’s vehicle was stolen by her boyfriend. The daughter confirmed that her boyfriend took the motor vehicle without her consent but was unwilling to cooperate with a police inves-
tigation. As such, no charges were pursued against the boyfriend. Police were requested to check an abandoned property on the east end of Camrose as the caller believed people may be living there without permission. Police attended during the daylight hours and also after dark and located no one on the property. Continued checks will be conducted.

The CAMROSE BOOSTER, October 20, 2015 – Page 22
Elsie Martha Kaser Elsie Kaser of Camrose, passed away on October 7, 2015 at the age of 100 years. A Celebration of Life was held at Grace Lutheran Church on October 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a private inurnment at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Elsie was born on February 21, 1915, the eldest daughter of Alfons and Elsa Weiss, who had settled in Wildwood, AB after immigrating from Germany a few years earlier. Here, Elsie and her sister Louise spent the early years of their lives enduring hardships and adventures such as goose egg-sized hail falling through the sod roof of their one-room cabin. Elsie began her schooling in Wildwood, which she excelled at, becoming a lifelong learner with an abiding curiosity about everything. After a series of moves with her family that ended in the East Bittern Lake District, Elsie began Normal School to pursue a career in teaching. In 1935, she interrupted her studies to marry John Kaser, a fellow East Bittern Laker. Their first home was the original Bittern Lake Post Office and General Store. They began a family and then moved to the “home place” where they lived and farmed for 43 years. Elsie’s life became one of caring for the children, especially Doreen, who early in life required special attention continuing until her death at 21 years of age. Elsie’s busy life also included involvement in the community through Helping Hand Club, Ladies’ Aid and the Bittern Lake Historical Society. Her interest in history encompassed her immediate and extended family, with many albums of photos and newspaper clippings telling their stories over the years. Flowers and plants overflowed Elsie’s home in Deer Meadows, spilling into common hallways, onto dining room tables and any available corner. Elsie enjoyed traveling, first with John and after he passed in 2002, on her own. For her 100th birthday, she travelled to Sedona, Arizona with her three children and son-in-law to celebrate. “I never dreamed I would have you all to myself for 10 days!” Elsie was predeceased by her husband John, and will be lovingly remembered by her son Eugene (Betty); daughters Betty and Bonnie (Bruce) Morris; four grandchildren Dominique, Fern, Karl and Aaron; 10 great-grandchildren Bradley, Brandon, Miranda, Jessica, Nicole, Nolan, Jackson, Kinley, Maligne and Lochlann. She will be fondly remembered by all her family and friends; as a matriarch of outstanding love and generosity. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Battle River Community Foundation to create a scholarship fund, the Grace Lutheran Church roofing fund, or to the charity of one’s choice.
Evelyn Donalda “Donnie” Schmidt April 21, 1925 – October 9, 2015

She grew up on the family farm and went to school at Chirbury and Daysland. She was a telephone operator in Bawlf. Florence liked farm life and spent as much time as she could outdoors. In 1953, she married Milton Mosand, and to this union were born David, Laurie and Kathleen. Florence was predeceased by her parents; infant brother Freddie; sister Lucy; and brothers Johnny and Walter. Surviving are sisters Erna Storvik and Alma Gunderson. She leaves to mourn her husband Milton; children Dave of Bawlf, Laurie (Colleen) of Bawlf and their children Lindsay (David) Jacobsen and Kristen, and Kathleen (Reg) Hauser of Leduc and their children Scott and Michael. Donnie was born in Port Arthur, ON, now known as Thunder Bay, on April 21, 1925 to Jessie and Silas Pearson. In the spring of 1929, Donnie and her family travelled west from Manatoulin Island to Alberta, where they settled in the Tofield area. Donnie attended primary grades at Ingram school, then Tofield School where she later graduated. From here, she moved to post secondary studies obtaining her teaching qualifications. As a young woman, Donnie began teaching in Northern Alberta and various country schools in the area, namely Avonroy, Farmington and Coal Hill where she boarded with the Boettger family. In November 1946, she married Homer Schmidt of Kingman and to this union, one daughter Denise was born. Donnie and Homer built their farming operation and, when Denise was a bit older, Donnie returned to teaching in Round Hill until her retirement in 1979. After retirement, Donnie and Homer spent lots of time with their team of horses participating in parades, wagon trains and trail rides. They enjoyed travelling extensively in their motor home to places like Alaska, Mexico, Ontario and the United States, visiting family and friends. In 2004, Donnie suffered two severe strokes and a heart attack. In 2010, she moved into care at Faith House in Camrose and, in 2012, to Sunrise Village until her passing. Left to mourn her memory are her daughter Denise; son-inlaw Jim Otto of Kingman; granddaughter Kyla (Rob) Coe of Kingman; grandson Kurtis Otto of Edmonton; sister-in-law Mavis Pearson of Arizona; as well as many nephews, nieces, friends and the staff of Sunrise Village. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015 from Salem Lutheran Church in Kingman with Rev. Dan Berg officiating. Interment has taken place in Kingman Cemetery. If friends and family so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, or The Alzheimer’s Society. Mark Chytracek, longtime Director of Student and Residence Services at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, died suddenly of a heart attack on Friday, October 9, 2015. Mark will be remembered as a man who loved strongly, cared deeply, and gave the best hugs. His impact on students’ lives over the past 33 years has been as continuous as it has been profound. He was seen by many as a model father figure. Mark loved athletics, and could often be found in the gym watching practices or games or at fundraisers for the Augustana Vikings. His Sundays consisted of going to church with his family, and then watching his beloved Minnesota Vikings. The thing that Mark loved the most on this earth was his family. He was a wonderful example of how to be an attentive, romantic husband, as well as a caring and devoted father. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Brandi; children Jon (Angela) of Camrose, Amanda Chytracek (Will Au) of Edmonton, and David (Jessi) of Calgary; grandson Noah; two brothers Tim (Laura) Hatfield of Wisconsin, and Greg (Michele) Chytracek of Wisconsin; and sister Karen (David) Stankiewicz of Wisconsin. Mark was predeceased by his parents Gerald and Joan; sister Jackie Zander; and daughter-in-law Julia. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Camrose at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the University of Alberta – Augustana Campus gymnasium with Rev. Craig Wentland officiating. If family and friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will gratefully be accepted for The Mark Chytracek Endowment for Leadership and Community Engagement, which will support on an ongoing basis both student awards and programming initiatives at Augustana inspired by Mark’s example. Milton was predeceased by his parents August and Clara; and brothers Albert, Lyman, Roger, Wayne and Fred. Milton is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. In lieu of a service, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Inurnment will take place in the Greenview Cemetery, Rosalind, AB. Harvest Hockey back Nov. 6 By Murray Green
Andrukow Group Solutions will be hosting Harvest Hockey Hooky 2 in a salute to agriculture featuring a matinee AJHL hockey game between the Camrose Kodiaks and Brooks Bandits on Friday, Nov. 6. It will feature family events, a trade show and concert performance by Juno award-winner and Alberta’s own Brett Kissel, in the EnCana Arena beginning at 3 p.m. Andrukow Group Solutions Incorporated (AGSI) and the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks bring two pillars of Alberta tradition and culture together: farming and hockey. More than 1,000 free tickets will be given to farmers, agricultural societies, 4-H, school groups and agricultural stakeholders as a way of saying thank you for the tireless efforts put in year on year to provide food for an ever-growing global population.
Besides the game, attendees will be treated to many other special additions, including a charity puck toss, guaranteed $5,000 50/50 draws, and a chance to win many other great prizes. As an added bonus, the game will be followed by a trade show and beer gardens in the Camrose Fieldhouse, and children’s activities centred around curling and hockey. The day concludes with Juno award winner Brett Kissel taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. “We’re extremely excited to be a part of this and to be adding even more to the success we saw with the event last year. This is going to be awesome,” said an excited Boris Rybalka, coach and general manager of the Kodiaks. A limited number of tickets will be available for the Brett Kissel concert. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17 and can be purchased by calling the
Camrose Kodiaks office at 780-679-2603. An Alberta country boy at heart, Brett’s own roots run deep in agriculture with the Kissel family recently celebrating the 100th anniversary of their own farm in Flat Lake. “Brett is the perfect fit to bring the Harvest Hockey Hooky event home. Not only is he a proud Albertan, but he is such a tremendous ambassador of agriculture and the farming legacy and future in Alberta,” said Keynon Ternovoy, AGSI marketing director. “We couldn’t be more excited to have Brett on board.” The show kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with emerging talent Jordan McIntosh taking the stage and performing his new single “All About the Girl” and other tracks from his from his forthcoming EP. Brett Kissel’s new album, Pick Me Up was recently released.

Portage Voyageurs goalie Kirby Halcrow is a thief. The hockey goalie stole three of four points from the Augustana Vikings on Oct. 9 and 10. He helped his team earn a point in a 3-3 game in the first match and then was perfect in a 1-0 victory over the Vikings in Camrose in the rematch. Evan Warmington scored twice and Beau Taylor added single markers to force overtime. Portage led 3-1 after the first 20 minutes before the Vikings mounted a comeback. Goalie Curtis Skip stopped 27 of the 30 shots he
faced, while his teammates fired 37 at Halcrow. Portage broke the deadlock in the second contest in the second period and hung on to win 1-0 in a fast-paced game in the EnCana Arena. Goalie Andy Williams turned away 23 of the 24 shots directed his way. Augustana fired 33 shots at Halcrow, who came up big again to garner the two points. Augustana hosts the Concordia Thunder on Oct. 23 at EnCana Arena in the next home game at 7:30 p.m. Cross-country running
The ACAC provincials in cross-country running are on Oct. 31 in Lethbridge, while the nationals are in

The Camrose Kodiaks lost two games and it cost them two spots in the Alberta Junior Hockey League south standings. The team is coming up just short with a 2-3 record in the last five games. Camrose lost a tough 1-0 contest to Okotoks when the team ran into hot goaltending on Oct. 10. Matt McNair of the Oilers scored in the third period to break the deadlock. Goalie Riley Morris stopped all 26 shots he faced. In the Camrose net, Brodan Salmond turned away 28 of 29 shots directed his way. The Canmore Eagles soared to a 3-2 win in overtime to take the extra point away from the Kodiaks on Oct. 9. Nelson Gadoury scored in the middle frame and Tanner Younghans tied the game in the third to force overtime for Camrose. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 23 of 26 shots fired his way. The Kodiaks peppered Canmore with 42 shots, but netminder Ryan Bontorin was up for the task. Okotoks is in first place with nine wins and 19 points. The Eagles slipped into second with eight wins and 17 points, while Camrose has seven wins and 16 points. Bear facts
The Kodiaks host Lloydminster on Oct. 24 in the next home game at 7 p.m. in the EnCana Arena. The Bobcats beat the Camrose in the first game of the showcase weekend, so the bears will be hungry for a victory. On Sunday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m., the Calgary Canucks provide the opposition. The Canucks are five points back of the Kodiaks.

Unemployment rate for Camrose-Drumheller region was the lowest in the province Steps to Independence
School is back in, and there has been a serious case of separation anxiety in our home. Our daughter has done quite well, but I’ve had a really tough time! I knew I would be one of those parents silently wiping tears away as I drove from the school, and I was right. (Can you get a distracted driving ticket for crying?) Grade 1 is a major adjustment for both students and their parents. We are used to seeing every squabble they have, eating lunches together and seeing what happens in their day. My daughter is only six, and my questions about school are already being answered with one word replies. (What was your favourite part of the day? Music. What did you do in music class? Sing.) Hmmmm. So a seven hour absence can be encapsulated in just two words now – I can’t wait to see how she tries to beat that as a teenager! What I would like to do is attach a Go Pro camera to her head for a day so I can truly understand her world, but there are probably rules against that. I kissed my four-year-old and six-year-old’s palms on the first day of preschool and Grade 1 to mimic the technique in the book The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn – but I had them kiss mine, too, so when I miss them, I can always lift my hand to my cheek and get a kiss. (Except that my daughter nibbled my hand instead of kissing it, so when I miss her, I get a nibble instead of a kiss.) I’ve been conducting an informal survey among my friends and counterparts to find out exactly how hard it is for parents to separate for full days from their children. About half of the parents have cried and been sad about the loss of time with their child, while the other half seem ready for this phase of life. A friend of mine said that she saw a mother leaving school on the first day, completely sobbing. She was surprised to see this because she hasn’t been sad about this change, and instead says she is excited for her child and all of the new opportunities and experiences that he will have. I think that’s a marvelously mature attitude; I’m just not quite there yet! I strongly believe that my job as a parent is to prepare my child for life as an adult. When my children pack up and head off into the world, I want them to know how to cook a meal. Clean a bathroom. Pay a bill. Make new friends. Do their laundry. But sometimes it makes my heart ache a little to see steps being taken towards their independence. It reminds me of my favourite motherhood quote, from Elizabeth Stone: “Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” Watching our children become more independent can be a sort of grieving process; we are grieving the babies that they were while celebrating the confident youth they are becoming. Thank goodness I have a number of years to mentally prepare for the kids going to college! I have decided to keep busy and enjoy the new quality time with my two youngest children. I also joined a recreation volleyball team to give my mind a break (we are getting team t-shirts, which I am ridiculously excited about). We have begun Franklin Friday nights, where we make popcorn and watch a Franklin the turtle video to celebrate the end of the week. Each night at bedtime, I snuggle with my daughter as she talks in complete sentences about her day, telling tales of classmates losing teeth, the latest show and tell item, and new friendships forged on the playground. So if you are driving at 8:45 in the morning in September and notice a number of drivers wiping tears from their eyes, they likely were not cutting onions before hopping in their minivan. They likely were not just trying to get out of a speeding ticket. They were very likely letting their little one gain independence and letting go, one step at a time.

Jeep Cherokee
Tony Smith By Dan Jensen
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler offers exceptional value and endless opportunities. Cherokee’s 2.3 litre Tigershark MultiAir I-4 engine achieves fuel economy of 7.7 litres per 100 km highway and arrives as standard issue. From its fully isolated aluminum head cover with an integrated oil separation system, to its high pressure die-cast aluminum block, the Tigershark engine was engineered to deliver a quiet and refined ride. The 3.2 litre Pentastar Variable Valve Timing (VVT) V6 engine with stop/start technology is a workhorse that was designed for those who require efficiency combined with extra muscle. Demanding drivers will appreciate its 271 horsepower, 239 lb.-ft. of torque, and fuel efficiency as impressive as 8.1 litres per 100 km highway. Economies are further enhanced with engine Stop/Start technology that automatically shuts off the engine as the vehicle comes to a stop, then seamlessly restarts it when the brake pedal is released. Jeep Cherokee’s class exclusive nine speed auto-
matic transmission is all about driving comfort, refinement and efficiency. Shift modes are determined by intelligent software that monitors engine torque, as well as kickdown, acceleration and road grade changes. Trail Rated Trailhawk Jeep Cherokee offers class-leading capability with your choice of three 4x4 systems. Jeep Active Drive I is a fully automatic, single-speed power transfer unit that delivers seamless operation in and out of 4WD at any speed. Equipped with a rearaxle disconnect, you can go from four-wheel drive to two-wheel drive and back again seamlessly, without driver input. This results in reduced energy loss when 4WD capability is needed – improving fuel efficiency. It all comes together to deliver a consistent boost in all weather capability. Jeep Active Drive II is a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU) offering torque management and 4-Low mode. This locks the front and rear driveshafts to deliver additional power at low speeds, or for towing your toys. A driveline neutral switch enables you to hitch Cher-
okee to your RV and take it along for the ride. Additionally, off-road capability is enhanced with a 2.5 cm increase in ride height and an incredible crawl ratio of 56:1 when paired with the 2.4 litre Tigershark, and a ratio of 48:1 when paired with the 3.2 litre Pentastar. The Trail Rate Jeep Active Lock includes everything in Jeep Active Drive II plus a locking rear differential that allows the wheels with the most traction to get 100 per cent of the system’s torque. For those who face severe weather or off-road conditions, Jeep Active Drive Lock will help Cherokee grab onto the ground and keep going, powered with even more capability and strength. Every 4x4 Cherokee is equipped with Jeep SelecTerrain Management System, giving you the power to tackle Mother Nature’s toughest conditions. You’ll have up to five settings that deliver ultimate driving stability by coordinating 12 vehicle systems, including throttle control, transmission shifting, transfer case, traction control and Electronic Stability Control. Choose from up to five sure-footed modes: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/ Mud and Rock.
Award-winning interior Jeep Cherokee arrives with an award-winning interior that offers plenty of room to move. Opt for the CommandView Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof and passengers in both rows will get more from every adventure, everywhere you go. Here, thoughtful design lives alongside versatile convenience and absolute beauty. Choose from a stunning array of colour palettes offered in sumptuous Nappa leatherfaced or premium cloth. Soft-touch surfaces are always within reach, adding more to the upscale appeal. Options abound, including heated and ventilated front seating for added warmth and cooling, and a heated steering wheel for welcome relief in the cold of winter. Cherokee has up to 18 cubbies, pockets and bins throughout, giving you plenty of spots to store phones, computers, tablets, maps and gaming devices. Flip up the floor of the rear cargo area and you’ll find three levels (depending on vehicle configuration) of rear cargo under-floor storage systems, each with an integrated storage tray. The 60/40 split-folding
reclining rear seats can travel up to 152 mm fore or aft for adjustable legroom flexibility. When the entire rear bench is folded, you have a nearly flat surface and approximately 1,554 litres of room. Masterfully simple The fingertip controls for the seven-inch customizable In-Cluster Display Centre are on your steering wheel and can instantly scroll you through a rich selection of vehicle data, including vehicle performance info, alerts and navigation. The award-winning and intuitive UConnect multimedia centre keeps you connected, informed and entertained. You can use your voice to control nearly every feature thanks to the latest available voice recognition technology. Jeep Cherokee has over 70 standard and available safety and security features, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and lane departure warning with lane keep assist. You can drive the 2016 Jeep Cherokee when you visit Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East. Phone 780-672-2476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Local leaders give their support to the YELLOW CARD program
Jackie Rae always brings a smile to work.
No matter how tough the job, her attitude is positive.
National program to end use of R word By Murray Green Camrose Special Olympics received support from community leaders and athletes from the University of Alberta Augustana Campus for the YELLOWCARD program. The national campaign was started by motionball and law enforcement agencies across Canada to end the use of the ‘R’ word when referring to any person with intellectual disabilities. Camrose community leaders took the pledge to join the second annual YELLOWCARD Day on Oct. 8. Although the ‘R’ word might seem harmless, it is actually very offensive to the 850,000 Canadians with an intellectual disability. Camrose is proud of the Special Olympic athletes in the community. Athletes recall memories of being bullied, devalued and being treated as an outsider because of the use of the word. The primary goal of the YELLOWCARD campaign is to raise awareness about the hurtful consequences of the bad word and move towards putting an end to using it. In soccer, a yellow card is shown as a warning to a player who has crossed a line, sometimes unintentionally. A yellow card has been adopted as a symbol for this campaign. It is a way of letting people know that although they might not have intended to speak in an offensive manner, they have. It is a means of communicating a need for change and encouraging people to make the choice of stopping the word use. Visit www.motionball. com/yellowcard to support the campaign and make your choice to be a leader. People are taking the pledge to remove the word from their vocabulary and conversations.
It’s her can-do spirit that keeps her going strong!

Augustana Vikings golfers Braxton Fox and Michael Harrison were named to the All-Canadian squad prior to the national finals at the Chilliwack Golf Club in British Columbia. Augustana coach Bill Penny was named national coach of the year. The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference named Fox as the 2015-16 ACAC men’s golf player of the year and Penny as the Alberta coach of the year. Fox, a fourth year bachelor of science kinesiology student, was an original member of the first Vikings golf team three years ago. Harrison joined the team this fall. “Braxton continually embraces his role as the team leader by his consistent play, battling through adversity and his deep respect for the game,” said assistant coach Neil Hepburn. “Braxton’s continuing development is a testimony to his hard work and determination. We are so pleased with his success.” Fox fired a final-round 74 to capture the gold medal in individual play at the ACAC championship. He also led the Vikings to a first-place finish in the team event. In his three years as a member of the Augustana team, Fox has progressed from placing 15th at the ACAC championships in 2013-14, to third place last year and a gold medal finish this season. Harrison helped lead the Augustana Vikings men’s team to a conference championship in Alberta. The rookie finished second individually, only two shots out of the goldmedal position. Harrison is a physical education and kinesiology student at Augustana. ACTIVE START PROGRAM Murray Green, Camrose Booster
Jason Delwo with son Joe and Lyndsey with son Lonny are ready to launch the Active Start Program through Special Olympics Camrose. Active Start allows children to have the opportunity to laugh alongside their peers. It is about having fun and being part of a program that introduces children to the world of sport by developing fundamental movement skills like walking, running, jumping and balancing.
Special Olympics adds Active Start program By Murray Green
Special Olympics Camrose now has a new program to assist parents who have children with learning or intellectual disabilities. The Active Start Program that is going to be launched in Camrose is for younger athletes who want to be involved. “The program is designed to help develop basic motor, movement and social skills for children two to six years old,” said Jason Delwo, who is helping his wife Lyndsey start the program. Active Start allows children to have the opportunity to laugh alongside their peers. It is about having fun and being part of a program that introduces children to the world of sport by developing fundamental movement skills like walking, running, jumping and balancing. “We want people to register early for the program, so we know how many will be attending,” said Lyndsey. “All participants are required to fill out a registration from through Special Olympics Camrose.” There is no cost for the program, however a parent or guardian is required to attend each session with his or her child. “We will hold a registration at 2 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Century Meadows Baptist Church (3720-66A Street),” said Lyndsey. The program will run every second Saturday until about mid-April with 12 sessions. For more information, or to register contact Lyndsey at lyndsey@centralagencies. com or cell 780-678-6117.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Support groups can offer help Cancer is a prolific disease that continues to affect millions of people around the world each year. The World Health Organization says that each year 12.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer and 7.6 million die from the disease. Despite the prevalence of cancer, many cancer patients experience feelings of isolation when diagnosed with the disease. A cancer diagnosis can lead to anxiety and depression, which can impact cancer patients’ ability to fight their disease. Ongoing research into a cure and new treatment options can give individuals hope, but finding a support group can provide the extra boost cancer patients need to make it through a difficult time in their lives. Check with a church or community center to see which programs are available in Camrose. Many community support groups meet in hospitals, churches, schools and other centers. These can be another great resource for information and support. Support groups can help cancer patients connect with people in similar situations and find the resources and emotional support they need.
