Camrose Branch No. 57 ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Wednesday, November 11, 2015 The Camrose Branch No. 57 of the Royal Canadian Legion is conducting their annual Wreath and Poppy Campaign. The purpose of the Poppy Fund is to provide assistance to ex-service personnel and their families who are in need. However, as the funds raised usually exceed that need, the surplus is used to improve life in the community through donations to local charities, purchase of hospital equipment as well as bursaries to local students that may have need. The annual Remembrance Day Service will be held at the CRE starting shortly before 11:00 a.m. Members of the general public are asked to attend and please be seated no later than 10:45 am so the veterans may enter, and the service commence, timed so that the two minute silence may be observed at 11:00 a.m. Come and help remember the participants of both world wars, Korea and Afghanistan as well as those personnel serving on United Nations Peace Keeping duties throughout the world today.

But, several thousand members will have earned much more!

Dan and Clara Fowler –

“We have been dealing with the Castor Credit Union for the last 15 years. The branch manager, Kevin Johnson, has helped us with advice and financing for our farming operation. He has also arranged financing when we bought into a local business. He made the deal possible for us, where other institutions did not. It is nice to deal with an experienced manager who understands our operation. Kevin helps you realize all aspects of the endeavour that you are undertaking. The turn around time is very prompt. The staff at the Castor Branch are both friendly and helpful.”

Ron Pilger –

“As a teenager, I opened a Credit Union account with my very first paycheque. Though I’ve ‘shopped around’ for personal loans, mortgages, rental property loans and foreign funds rates, I’ve always found my Credit Union branch to be competitive or better. The service is beyond compare. For over four decades, I’ve enjoyed thousands of dollars in profit sharing. I highly recommend membership.”

This is the actual amount of profi t-share which one of our long-term corporate accounts will receive on November 4!

John Wipf – Viking Colony

“Friendly staff who treat us like family. If I ever need some clarification, some advice, some training on what new gadget is out today, you always help us out. I’ve dealt elsewhere, but the CU tellers are the best around. A lot of the colonies have moved to CUs over the past few years.”

Evelyn Robert –

“I want to say it is ALWAYS a pleasurable experience when I come into the Vision Credit Union to do my banking! Anytime I have come in or called, Rose your Branch Supervisor, Trisha your Loans Officer and Tammy your Member Service Representative have always given me exceptional customer service. At all times they all have been very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and very accommodating in providing me whatever assistance I needed!! At times they all have gone ‘over and above.’ In addition, they make the effort to take the time to ask how things are and that is such a nice ‘touch’ and is sooo appreciated!”

Bittersweet victory for Kevin Sorenson By Dan Jensen

Kevin Sorenson will be going back to the House of Commons in Ottawa, only this time he will be sitting on the side of the Official Opposition. Sorenson claimed 81 per cent of the vote to win the Battle River Crowfoot riding Oct. 19, but his Conservative Party went down to defeat, picking up just 99 seats, compared to 184 for the Liberals. The NDP was able to obtain 44 seats, the Bloc Quebecois 10 and the Green Party one. Sorenson described his win as bittersweet. “It is disappointing when you look at the national picture and see the global economic difficulties around the world, but I am overjoyed and overwhelmed with the level of support the voters of Battle River Crowfoot have given me,” he said at the Norsemen Inn where he watched the election results stream in. “I will continue to serve to the best of my ability and work hard to make sure the issues in Battle River Crowfoot are heard clearly in Ottawa.” Liberal candidate Andy Kowalski received 9.3 per cent of the votes in the riding while NDP candidate Katherine Swampy received 6.5 per cent of the votes and Green Party candidate 3.2 per cent. “I feel I did well,” said Kowalski, owner of Ryley Sausage. “I am glad that Kevin is still in there. I would have liked to have been in his place but he is a great guy. He knows how to treat his voters well. I could tell after the first couple of polls that he won the riding.” Kowalski was hurt by the fact he wasn’t able to get any election signs. “Something was messed up in the head office so I was running for 11 weeks without any election signs.” Sorenson said the other Battle River Crowfoot candidates represented their parties to the best of their ability.

Kevin Sorenson spoke to his supporters at the Norsemen Inn after learning he had been elected as Member of Parliament for Battle River-Crowfoot for another term. Joining him at the podium were, from left to right, his son-in-law, Matthew Schmidt, his daughter Kristen, his wife, Darlene, and his son, Ryan.

“They were clear at getting their party policy out.” Sorenson admitted being nervous about the what the Liberals will do once they form government. “They have committed to massive spending, they have committed to tax increases, they have committed to infrastructure that is going to burden our children and grandchildren for years. That is what they talked about in the election. I hope that calmer heads and wiser heads will prevail in that party and they will see that right now Canada is in the best position of any country in the G-7. We have a triple A credit rating. That means that the interest rate on our national debt is lower. We have seen what the Liberal government has meant in Ontario. Massive debts, credit ratings dropping, manufacturing having difficulties. We will just have to see how this works out, I hope they don’t live up to their political promises because if they do we are going to see national debt

at a level we haven’t ever seen.” Sorenson said he was pleased with the messages the Conservatives were giving in the election. “We have a platform that says we believe you can have a better life for you and your family, whether you are a senior citizen or you are a young person with children. That is why we were investing in things like universal child care benefits. When the other parties were talking about a national day care system where the largest cities would have this federally run day care, we said we want to put the money into the pockets of moms and dads because they are the ones who are the experts in child care. Families are a significant part of our platform.” Sorenson said the Conservatives committed to spending money on infrastructure in a focused way while coming back to a balanced budget. “We did it last year with a $1.9 billion surplus and we

were headed towards a surplus and a balanced budget this time. We were able to cut taxes to the lowest level in 50 years. We provided income splitting for seniors, we got tough on crime, we stood up against bullets and we stood up against terrorists. We said we would take our share of refugees and we did but we weren’t going to bypass the security of our country for a quota system before Christmas of 30,000.” He said the Conservatives are going to pressure the new Liberal government to continue on the road of the Trans Pacific Partnership. “I think some of the people in that party get it so hopefully they will carry it down the road.” Sorenson expressed his gratitude to voters for being given the chance to represent the riding and serve the country. “So many times I have almost had to pinch myself to see if this is really happening. How did I end up as a Member of Parliament?

How did I end up as Minister of State for Finance? It is a great country and it affords us many opportunities. I have had the pleasure of serving with the Prime Minister. He is head and shoulders above other leaders and he is a friend. I will always count that as an extreme honour.” The riding of Battle River Crowfoot was created largely from the former riding of Crowfoot, combined with the southern half of the former VegrevilleWainwright riding and includes the communities of Three Hills, Consort, Stettler, Camrose, Viking and Wainwright. In 2011 in Crowfoot, Sorenson took 84 per cent of the vote, followed by the NDP with 9.8 per cent. In terms of demographics, 16.5 per cent of the people in Battle River Crowfoot were seniors as of the 2011 census, the highest figure in Alberta. Just 4.9 per cent of the people here in 2011 were immigrants, the lowest number in the province.

Municipal overspending costs households over $2,000 The Canadian Federation of Independent Business’ annual Alberta Municipal Spending Watch reveals operating expenditures by the vast majority of the province’s municipalities have risen at an unsustainable rate between 2003 and 2013, the last year for which data is available. Excessive operating spending by local governments cost Alberta households $2,039 in 2013 alone and a total of $9,955 since 2003.

“Municipal spending is out-of-control and in the context of the current economic situation, businesses and taxpayers deserve more scrutiny over every dollar spent,” said Amber Ruddy, Alberta director for CFIB. “Overspending at the municipal level has created a dangerous financial situation for local economies, and resulted in an excessive tax and spend scheme that is damaging to small firms.” Growth in real (i.e. inflation-adjusted) operat-

ing spending from 2003 to 2013 increased by 82 per cent, compared to population growth, which grew by 24 per cent. Province wide data shows that municipalities overspent by $13.8 billion since 2003, and $2.9 billion in 2013 alone. Half of municipal operating spending across Alberta was allocated toward salaries, wages, and benefits. “Municipalities fail to take responsibility for bloated employee compensation, which is the main driver of

excessive spending,” said Ruddy. “Instead of resorting to property tax increases and asking the provincial government for additional tax powers, local governments must be looking for savings in their own backyards.” The report recommends municipalities control spending increases to the rate of population growth; adopt sustainable wage growth policies; and have suitable contingency funds to match the risk of natural disasters.

The report recommends the province: reject calls for new taxation powers through City Charter agreements; create a municipal auditor general to conduct performance-based audits for Alberta’s municipalities. Read the full 2015 Alberta Municipal Spending report cfib.ca/ab. CFIB is Canada’s largest association of small- and medium-sized businesses with 109,000 members across every sector and region.

Employees of the Camrose Grant Thornton LLP office laced up their walking shoes to participate in the Grant Thornton Foundation’s first annual Making Steps Count Walk – a national walk-a-thon supporting three Canadian children’s charities on Oct. 8. The Camrose office was well-represented, with 14 walkers turning out for the event, raising a total of $1,320 for the Grant Thornton Foundation’s three national charities: Big Brothers, Big Sisters Canada; Breakfast Club of Canada; and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada. Nationally, the Making Steps Count Walk raised $125,415, with Grant Thornton LLP itself matching staff donations. “The Grant Thornton Foundation’s Making Steps Count Walk was a fun way to make a difference in our community – and communities across the country,” said Beth Kushnerick, principal at Grant Thornton LLP in Camrose. “Not only did we have the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, but we were able to positively impact the lives of Canadian youth in the process.” The Making Steps Count Walk was just one part of the Grant Thornton Foundation’s year-long campaign to raise funds for its three national charities. Money raised through the campaign will go towards a variety of youth-focused programs – including funding

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Which brain?

So there I was, standing 918 feet above a glacial valley, with nothing but a sheet of glass between me and the valley floor, trying hard to believe my rational mind. My rational mind knew that I was safe, the engineering worked, all was well. My primeval mind did not believe that for a moment. My rational mind was whispering something about an amazing view but I couldn’t hear it because my primeval mind was shrieking, “Get back! Danger! We’re going to die!” *** I’ve been reading brain books for a few years now. I’m fascinated with how our brains do what they do. If I understand it correctly (grossly over-simplified), the front and top part of our brain, the neocortex, allows us to learn, remember, think, process information, communicate. Besides processing information and knowledge, this part of the brain can also imagine new possibilities. I think of the neocortex as the rational brain. The middle of our brain, the limbic brain, is our chemical or emotional brain. When we have experiences, our limbic brain manufactures chemicals that reflect the emotions we’re experiencing. We begin to embody what we are experiencing or imagining. I think of the middle limbic brain as the emotional brain. Down at the base of our skull is the cerebellum. This part of our brain that keeps us breathing, keeps our heart pumping, looks after all the automatic functions that allow us to stay alive. It allows us to make conscious movements. It also stores our hardwired attitudes, emotional reactions, habits and unconscious skills (like riding a bicycle) that we have mastered. The cerebellum is about “survival.” I think of it as the “primeval” brain. A key point is that, if we want to make changes or create new experiences in our lives, we need to get all three parts of our brains working together. Our thoughts, emotions and actions need to align. *** Back to the sheet of glass. When my friend and I arrived at the Glacial Skywalk on the Banff-Jasper Highway in the Canadian Rockies, we agreed that we’d each meander around the displays and walk the glass-bottomed glass-sided Skywalk at our own pace and reconnect afterwards. I know that I’m sometimes uncomfortable with heights Glacial Skywalk near but until I was standing at the Columbia Icefields edge of the glass walkway, I had not experienced absolute paralyzing primeval terror. My heart was pounding, palms sweaty, and I could practically feel my pupils expanding. I lifted one foot to step onto the glass walkway and every cell of my body froze. I could see people ambling comfortably and even (gasp!) leaning over the sides. I was not one of them. My friend, who had by now walked around the glass Skywalk several times, came to join me. She offered to take my left arm while I clutched the railing with my right hand. I finally could let one foot rest on the glass. After a few seconds, I actually lifted the other foot and stepped onto the glass bottom. Eventually we made it all the way around the glass walkway, with me sometimes actually taking in the breathtaking views and other times having waves of terror. At the perfect moment (when she was sure I was okay), my friend said, “This is probably inappropriate, but would you like me to take a picture of your white knuckles clutching the railing?” I did laugh. And I was glad that we visited the Glacial Skywalk. *** At times when we choose new experiences or have new challenges just show up, we can expect that our three brains may not immediately be in sync. Even when we know something is right for us, our emotions and body may take a while to agree. I’ve understood that concept for a long time. The Skywalk gave me a whole new physical experience and I think it’s fair to say that the concept is now embodied! *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson. com

Tim Parker (Oct. 13) continues on about “scientists,” people hired by the federal government to do research, and whose political activism has been dampened. He asks the Conservative candidate, “Why is this deliberate muzzling of scientists in the best interest of Canada?” Our representative in Ottawa has already responded to him, “I reject the premise that our government is muzzling scientists.” Parker talks about “shutting down science,” as if to put restraints on the political activism of some is to eliminate all science. To restrain activism is not to restrain science, if there ever was any. He smears Harper’s Conservatives with “...had anyone told me that a Canadian government would purposefully shut down science ...,” yah, there is no science left! In reality, priorities change from time to time and choices are made by our leaders on what to spend our money on, what to research. “Some scientists have been required to change

their results because the results are politically inconvenient,” Parker claims. Probably their “results” were very “politically correct,” i.e. liberal garbage. “Others” are (were) complaining about “they can’t voice an opinion even when they are willing to identify it as their own opinion”; for how many was it an auxiliary aim if not their major concern to “get Harper out!”? Supposedly 15,000 federal scientists were surveyed; he says they were “invited to participate” (in an online survey yet!). So perhaps a hundred or two actually did participate? And “90 per cent of scientists” said this or said that. Wow! Can faux science be more obvious than that? “Here is what they found,” he says, speaking like a lot of science, speaking as though true facts were being presented. Note that the “findings” were about feelings: “90 per cent...don’t feel they can speak freely to the media,” “37 per cent report...” (we should believe their selfinterested “report”?) Did even one object to being questioned about their feelings, did even one suggest scientists should be about objectivity, not subjective opinion? By the way, why should we pay big salaries to 15,000 to fantasize about, to make models about things like “climate change”? They didn’t save the cod fishery, so what good are they? A thousand or two would probably be plenty. Douglas Hendrickson, Bittern Lake Sign vandalism

It is “interesting” to

see the “blue-wave” blanketing Alberta...to see how entrenched Alberta is in its “Conservatism,” and see the evidence of Albertans’ blind support of the Federal Conservative status quo. It was, however, distressing to see how Albertans defaced numerous NDP (Ms. Swampy) election signs in the Heisler-Forestburg area, the incumbent Conservative candidate’s place of residence. These actions reflect poorly, and perhaps unjustly, on Battle River-Crowfoot residents. What do these defaced signs say about Battle RiverCrowfoot’s respect for diversity? And the right to express democratic change during an election? What does that vandalism say about respect for property and the democratic process? Is this vandalism an adult version of the Daysland Grads’ defacing of the Wild Rose Candidate’s signs during the provincial election (on Highway #13 at the entrance to Daysland)? That vandalism was just brushed-off as being a “typical teen-age grad thing,” instead of requiring the culprits to make restitution by doing community cleanup, to teach them responsibility for their actions and respect for the democratic process. How do we explain the sign-defacement during the federal election campaign? And how do we improve respect for diversity? How do we build a “better” Alberta? Marion Leithead, Bawlf

Ghostwalk at museum October 30 By Dan Jensen

The stories will be flowing, the costumes will be on display and the popcorn will be popping at a Camrose and District Centennial Museum Ghostwalk fundraiser Oct. 30. Museum coordinator Janine Carroll, also known as the “Ghost Lady,” will be telling stories starting at 7 p.m. about some of the odd and mysterious things she has heard about buildings on the museum grounds and the old fairgrounds, as well as one or two about Rosehaven. While none of the stories

are scary, the evening is not appropriate for younger children. Popcorn for the Ghostwalk fundraiser will be provided by Prairie Kettle Corn. “The owner will be adding to the fundraiser by making a donation for every bag of popcorn purchased,” said Carroll. “People can stock up with some deliciously flavoured popcorn and support the museum programs.” As the event will be on the eve of Halloween, those who are attending are encouraged to come dressed in costumes.

Carroll has a large collection of ghost stories as the owner of the small business GhostTouring Camrose. “I know most of the stories that have been around, but I am doing research and hoping to collect a few more,” she said. Suggested donations for those planning to attend the Ghostwalk fundraiser are $10 per adult and $25 per family. All money received will be used to support Camrose and District Centennial Museum programs.

Q. Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose Probus Club’s 2015-16 executive includes from left to right membership chair Jim Anderson, treasurer Sharon Anderson, speaker committee member Rose-Marie Kerr, president Alex Oliver and secretary Bonnie Oliver. Missing is committee member Dorothy Felgate.

By Murray Green The Probus Club of Camrose stands for retired, or semi-retired PRO(fessional) and BUS(iness) people. Its goal is to stimulate thought, interest and participation in activities at a time in life when it is easy to become complacent and self-centered. Probus Club of Camrose is affiliated with Probus International and Rotary International. The Camrose club was formed in 1995 and meets every third Tuesday of the month except July and August at 9:30 a.m., usually at the Norsemen Inn. Meetings include a short business agenda and then a guest speaker. Local, national and international speakers cover a wide interest spectrum, representing all walks of life. A question/answer period follows. Probus clubs are to be non-political and non-sectarian, non-profit making and non-fundraising. They are sponsored by Rotary and use a distinctive lapel pin, and name badges to assist in friendship.

“If you are interested in your city, country and the world, come join us for fellowship, and to listen to outstanding speakers and presentations,” said president Alex Oliver. For more information contact Alex Oliver at 780679-5617 or Jim Anderson, membership, at 780672-5752. The 20th anniversary was celebrated at the Sept. 15 meeting in City Hall. Probus clubs were first formed, as an acronym for PRO(fessional) and BUS(iness), in the early 1920’s in Saskatchewan and in New Haven, Connecticut, USA – the latter devoted to helping people with mental and physical disabilities, and autism. Because they were not restricted to retired professional and business leaders, and had a different objective, they are (were) not associated with the present mainstream of Probus clubs worldwide. The name was fused into a different type of club in England, and the first non-

sectarian Probus club specifically for active retirees was formed in 1966 by the Rotary Club of Caterham, England to allow retired professionals to continue to meet together for fellowship. The previous year, the Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City, England, formed the Campus Club that had the same purpose. The two soon merged and flourished under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Bromsgrove, Birmingham, England. In 1974, Probus expanded into New Zealand and by 1976 the idea had spread to Australia. The first Probus club for seniors in North America was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Galt in Cambridge, Ontario, in 1987. Although Probus membership has its greatest concentrations in Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, clubs today exist in all parts of the world, including the US, Belgium, India, South Africa and several other countries in Africa and Asia.

How should I evaluate the value of a trip compared to the price of that trip?

A:

Price is what you pay – value is what you receive. It’s true, there are often many different sale prices for the same destination. We see or hear about trips being offered on-line or through print ads at what seems to be spectacular pricing. But when our professional travel advisors really analyze what is being offered for the advertised price, we inevitably find bare bones features included, if at all. Once we add in the cost of minor extras like water or wine, or expensive trip options like side tours, entertainment choices or superior rooms the “bargain-priced” trips are typically not bargains at all. At Marlin Travel we go to great lengths to offer trips with maximum value. We want our clients to be pleasantly surprised – not nickel and dimed. We will walk you through what is included with your cruise, guided or other dream vacation. We believe trips should be relaxing, fulfilling and memorable. We want you to have fun. We want you to be thrilled and we’ll go the extra mile to ensure you get a great trip at an irresistible value!

Q.

I’m extremely healthy – do I really need an influenza vaccine?

A:

A flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and others from this highly contagious illness. The World Health Organization has identified the strain of influenza most likely to cause illness and death this winter, and this vaccine has been ordered to benefit 60 percent of our provincial population. I administer the vaccine right in our pharmacy, and no appointment is necessary. You have the option to receive the vaccination by nasal spray or needle. Also, there is no direct cost to you or anyone who requests the vaccination. The influenza vaccination is low-risk and few people are ineligible. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, this does not eliminate you as a candidate, nor do most other vaccines administered in a tight time period. An allergy to latex is not applicable, and there are only a few medicines which may negate you from having the current vaccine. Though you may have had influenza shots in previous years, it is important to make this year’s shot part of your fall routine as the virus changes from year to year. As a trained health professional, I can answer any additional questions you may have about the influenza vaccination.

Q. A:

Yes. Shingles is a viral infection. Approximately 1 in 3 people over 55 years of age will get shingles at least once in their lifetime. It is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. This virus lies dormant near your spinal cord and brain until it reactivates as Shingles. The accompanying rash can be devastatingly painful. This pain, medically known as Posteropetic neuralgia (PHN) is difficult to treat with traditional medicinal techniques. Biofeedback is one potential pain reduction option. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, a therapy that uses mild electrical current, is sometimes a solution for people who suffer. Acupuncture, the science mastered by brilliant Chinese health professionals over hundreds of years, is also commonly used in order to offer patients meaningful comfort from Shingles. Early treatment not only lessens the chance of complications, but can also help shorten the time of a Shingles infection. Acupuncture is an amazing science that is proven world-wide for a wide variety of ailments. Pain relief is the number one reason people visit our clinic.

Q.

Are Canadians A v vacation-deprived?

A:

World-wide research suggests we aare! Canadians, according to Expedia. ca, do not take advantage of 10 million vvacation days they have earned at their pplaces of employment. As a result 53% of Canadians report being vacation-deprived. Work schedule is the top reason at 32%. 29% of people prefer to save money. Financial obligations rank third at 29%. 24% of people said personal and family schedules were the reason they could not enjoy the numerous benefits of travel. Really sad is that 1.4 million Canadians have reportedly never been on a vacation. Research also shows just how important vacation time is to one’s physical and mental wellbeing. Improved relationships with family, friends and others comes with wise use of time off. Greater productivity on the job is another advantage of going on a holiday. A whopping 78% of people agree they feel energized and excited before a vacation. A full 40% of people feel less stressed and more relaxed after a holiday away. And 36% of people report being happier after a holiday. Reward yourself – treat yourself – take care of yourself. Get away. We will help make your vacation a lifelong positive and happy memory. Q. A:

Is it better to buy a brand new home or a pre-owned dwelling?

When we relocated a few years aago, we craved the design, amenities aand pride offered by brand new cconstruction. However, we loved the floorplan and location of a very nice used property. So we bought it! Choose a home that will make you happy for years ahead. New homes come with warranty on components and even the appliances. That can be advantageous. The what-if factor can play a role in buying a used home: What if the furnace doesn’t last as long as we expect? What if we only get eight more years out of those shingles, and so?...... In Alberta, buyers are protected by law – all preexisting conditions must be disclosed! This should offer peace of mind. Often used homes are discounted in price, reflecting their age and condition, allowing you wiggle room for repairs, renovations and even major custom overhauls. Clearly home buying is a highly personal decision. I recommend buying what you need, want and in a location that is right for you. Use a home inspector. Buy using more logic and less emotion. Q.

What is the best type of blind to reduce heat loss in the winter months?

A:

Cellular shades are the most energy effi e cient type of shade. The attractive honeycomb design creates pockets of air h that insulate windows from heat and cold t to t lower energy bills year round. Cellular shades also offer great sound absorption to quiet rooms with hard flooring or vaulted ceilings. They come in a wide variety of colors and opacity levels for personalized privacy and light control. Fabrics come in widths up to 144” and can also be made in a convenient side opening design for wider windows or patio doors. They are a great choice for room dividers and closet doors as well. Cordless cellular shades also provide safety solutions for homes with children or pets. The popular top down bottom up or “café style”option allows cellular shades to provide exterior view and natural light while still maintaining privacy. They can also be made in specialty shapes like arches, octagons, hexagons and triangle shaped windows. Loss of heat through skylights can be tremendous in the winter, and cellular shades will be insulating while still allowing natural light to come in. A perfect finishing touch for your cell shade is an elegant cornice. They come in a variety of wood finishes or upholstery fabrics to complement any decor. St. Mary’s experience valuable for students By Murray Green

Camrose Grade 8 students are excited to be involved in the pilot program Young Medical Minds, a joint initiative between Alberta Health Services, and Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose. Charlie Killam School student Georgia Borys and Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School student Tannen Zamryrut are two of the 12 participants in the Young Medical Minds attending sessions at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose. “It is literally the most amazing program that you could ask for,” said Tannen, on his thoughts. “It is like medical school for kids. You

can learn all kinds of stuff that you otherwise thought would be obvious. For example, stitches are not done with a needle and thread. They are done with a hooklike needle using thread and done in knots. We learned how to do x-rays and how to use tools that we otherwise couldn’t.” Young Medical Minds was launched to give junior high students a sampling of medical professions available in Camrose. “It is really cool because it was hands on instead of reading from a book,” added Georgia. “Instead of watching someone do it, you can actually do it yourself. It helps us learn more about it.”

Tannen was asked what was the best part of the program so far. “I love it all. Paramedic science is one of my favourite subjects,” he said. “My favourite part was the stitches and casting. It was cool to see because you don’t think they do all of that stuff,” added Georgia. “There is a lot more to do than just put the needle through.” The program gave students another option to consider when they make career choices. “I was thinking about it earlier and being a mathematician, but when this program came it totally changed my perspective of being a doctor or an EMS person,”

said Tannen. “I learned the difference was that EMS people had to work in hazardous situations. Doctors have everything ready for them, so I’m thinking it is better to be a doctor.” Georgia was thinking about becoming a pediatric doctor. “It has changed my perspective and I really wanted to be part of this program. I didn’t realize there were so many professions in the medical field. My friends are saying they should have joined.” The students didn’t mind the extra learning sessions in the evenings. “It is more than just school. It is five times more

amazing than school,” concluded Tannen. Every Wednesday in September, 12 junior high students from Camrose have been taking part in such events as a simulation of a trauma patient’s journey (EMS, ER, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation) at St. Mary’s Hospital. The hands-on, real life experiences stimulate the students’ interests and expose them to health and medical career opportunities. The program is supported by the University of Alberta Augustana Campus and sponsored by the Health Sciences Association of Alberta and Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak.

Junior high students gain medical experience By Murray Green

Camrose Grade 8 students at Charlie Killam School and Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School are aspiring young medical minds. The pilot program Young Medical Minds was a joint initiative between Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose, and was supported by the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, the Health Sciences Association of Alberta and Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak. The program gave young people a sampling of medical professions available in Camrose. Every Wednesday in September, 12 junior high students from Camrose took part in such events as a simulation of a trauma patient’s journey (EMS, ER, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation) at St. Mary’s Hospital. The hands-on, real life experiences stimulate the students’ interests and expose them to health and medical career opportunities. Junior high students are at a prime age for career discovery. “Camrose physician, Dr. Christopher Nichol, came up with the idea for the program in part because of his personal experience. He was inspired to become a physician at a young age after taking part in a special science program through his school division. There was a series of evening sessions and he still remembers being impressed by the experiments,” said Carol Breitkreutz, school and health promotions with Alberta Health Services. “I went to the schools to see if they wanted this. They want real life experiences for the students.” The program was given the green light on Feb. 20, and by September, a total of 12 excited students were attending the sessions. “We began with Dr. Nichol pulling together a lot of colleagues from different areas who were knowledgable and passionate health care providers,” explained Breitkreutz.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Charlie Killam School Grade 8 student Georgia Borys learned how to take care of a fracture by moulding a cast for fellow student Cameron McIntyre during a Young Medical Minds session at the Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose.

“Everything we did was to have fun. We wanted to motivate students to at least look at careers in the medical sciences. Whatever the field may be, we wanted to get students thinking about medicine and health related careers,” added Dr. Nichol. “We thought this would be a great opportunity to do that. We have very enthusiastic individuals in Camrose who jumped on board. The students we selected were happy to be able to touch things and do things and hopefully we motivated them to look at the health field as a career.” The Camrose program was a pilot with plans to take it across the province. The need for young people to consider health professions is high; Alberta’s population is growing, aging and has more complex health needs. “In my experience as a teacher for 28 years, recently in junior and high school,

I know that students are asked to think about career choices earlier. Grade 8 is a nice age because when they reach Grade 9 students need to get their marks up as they head to high school and make course choices. It is a great curriculum fit as well because they learn about the body. They learn a lot more hear that they can take back to the classroom,” said Breitkreutz. Because it was a pilot project, the program was kept small to 12 students. “We went into the schools and talked about what we were going to do. Then the students applied to be in the program. The schools made the selection of students for us because we didn’t know the students,” said Breitkreutz. “About 18 applied. I wouldn’t be surprised that now that they are going back to the schools and telling classmates what they did, that we won’t get a lot more applying next time.”

The low numbers allowed the students more hands on time. The program took the students through an entire health care scenario. “We had a call come over the radio that there was a scene for EMS to respond to. It was a simulated scene of a skateboard accident where a youth was unconscious, face down and the helmet was off. It was a bicycle helmet, not a skateboard helmet,” said Breitkreutz, recalling the scene. “That’s where it began and the emergency team responded, just like it was a regular call. The students saw all of that and then the EMS broke them into four groups and they went to each of the four stations and they did the same things the emergency responders had done, using Stan (the learning patient). They learned amazing things.” The second week the students went to the simulated emergency room at the hospi-

tal to learn about injury prevention and immunization. “We talked about Stan, who had face lacerations, a cut on his face and a deformity to his wrist (broken). We stabilized Stan in a mock emergency room and split into two groups. One group did casting on the other, and the other group did suturing on chicken thighs,” explained Dr. Nichol. The students also learned about diagnostic imaging and on the last week rehabilitation and mental illness. “We ended the sessions at Augustana to bring it full circle and talk about education and what you need to do to be employed in the medical profession,” said Breitkreutz. “Our goal is to ‘grow’ our own health care professionals. Local students can go to school and work here.” The program was made possible through grants from the Health Sciences Association of Alberta and the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak.

Kelsey Drama Club holding auditions By Dan Jensen

The Kelsey Drama Club will be holding auditions for its February production of Michael Parker’s The Amorous Ambassador (An American Farce) at the Kelsey Hall Oct. 28 and 29. “We’re looking for four females and four males who are in their mid 30s or older and who enjoy doing comedy,” said Kelsey Drama Club member and play director Ray Leiren. “They should be willing to attend practices once a week from November to January, as well as the 12 shows over four weekends.” The show is heavy on action, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to learn the lines. “It is heavy on the shticks if we can call it that,” said Leiren. The Amorous Ambassador centres on “Hormone” Harry Douglas, an American Ambassador to Great Britain and the trouble in which he finds himself when he tells his wife, Lois, that has he has arranged a golf outing in Scotland for the weekend. Lois in turn tells Harry that she, too, will be gone for the weekend at a spa, and that their daughter, Debbie, will be gone visiting a girlfriend. Each then tells Perkins, their newly hired butler in their country home, who stoically watches as each of them leave for the weekend. The action starts to heat

up when Harry secretly returns to the house, having planned a romantic rendezvous with a sexy nextdoor neighbour. Debbie returns with her boyfriend, Joe, believing they have the house to themselves, followed by Faye Baker and Captain South of the U.S, Marine Corps, who have been forced to leave the embassy by a bomb threat. When the captain places a squad of marines around the perimeter of the house, everybody is sealed in. “It is a lot of situational comedy,” said Leiren. The Amorous Ambassador is the Kelsey Drama Club’s 24th winter production. “We did our first show back in 1992 as a way to help the community society raise money to fix the Kelsey Hall,” said Leiren. “They had seen that Gordon Fadum, Gerry Pilger and myself had done a couple of shows with the Bawlf Town and Country Women and asked if we would help get them on their way.” While he doesn’t mind taking his turn as the drama club’s director, acting is Leiren’s first love. Of the 24 drama club productions he has been a part of, he has been an actor in 12 to 14. “I enjoy interacting with other people on the stage and making people laugh,” he said. “I took on the job as director this year

because nobody else seemed to want to do it and we all do our part.” Tickets to Kelsey Drama Club dinner theatre productions have typically been very hard to come by. A few years ago, tickets for all the shows were sold out within an hour of them going on sale. Last year, the club did a special Sunday show in cooperation with the Battle River Railway.

“They (Battle River Railway) picked up passengers along the rail line and we accommodated them by doing a show on the Sunday afternoon so that everyone could get home at a reasonable time,” said Leiren. “They had people on the train from as far away as Wainwright.” Leiren said there is a good amount of camarade-

rie amongst the club’s members. “We get a lot of people coming back year after year to be involved. Our stage managers have been with us for five years now and everyone seems to have a good time.” Auditions for the play will start at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing more information may contact Leiren at 780373-3910.

To add to von Tettenborn’s (Oct. 20) list, here are several more things MP Sorenson said during the Augustana forum, that also need to be refuted/corrected. 1. Youth employment “increased” under Harper. Correction: youth employment was negative, down 1.1 per cent from PM Martin’s era (Stanford and Brennan; 2015). 2. Our universities are at the top globally. He lauded them as “innovative.” Correction: Reuters Top 100 World’s Most Innovative Universities lists only U. of T (#38) and U. BC (#67) in Canada. U. of Alberta ranked #96 in the QS University (Top 100) World Rankings. We are not “at the top”! 3. Praised Prime Minister Harper’s strong “leadership.” Correction: When comparing Canada’s nine Prime Ministers (19462014) using 16 criteria (Stats Canada data; Stanford and Brennan 2015) Harper ranked “worst” of the nine. Harper ranked last (or tied for last) in seven categories. In six

more categories Harper ranked (or tied for) second last. This data contradicts Sorenson’s claims of Harper’s “leadership” skills. 4. PM Harper has a strong “economic record.” Correction: As Minister of State Finance, Sorenson should be aware that Harper, within two years, turned a surplus of $13.8 billion into a $5.8 billion deficit, and gave Canadians at least seven consecutive deficit budgets (Clark and DeVries; April 2015). Under Harper, real GDP growth fell 1.3 per cent; GDP per capita fell 1.5 per cent; exports fell 2.7 per cent; average growth in personal income fell 2.1 per cent. Stanford and Brennan’s (July 2015) list is extensive. Additionally the CIBC “Job Quality Index” indicates the quality of jobs deteriorated 2.5 per cent. “Invest in Canada” (2014; Fig 4-10) shows Agriculture as “NA,” thereby indicating agriculture’s lack of importance in Harper’s Canada. Sorenson was very fortunate the moderator chose not to read questions that might embarrass Sorenson, such as the one regarding the demise of the Canadian Wheat Board, dismantled under Harper’s watch. Sorenson was also lucky to avoid having to justify Harper’s “Old Stock Canadians” comment, explain the Senate and robo call scandals, defend the despicable Omnibus Bill, Bills C-23, C-24 and C-51. All in all (aside from some booing) Mr. Sorenson’s Conservative audience let him off pretty easy.

Harper’s biographer, Ibbitson, says Harper “does not like to take directions,” and that he thought he at last had “a job where no one could tell him what to do.” The majority of Canadians, however, thought otherwise, and clearly told Harper he can no longer be Prime Minister. One can only assume the 81 per cent voting for Sorenson are content with Harper’s poor fiscal record. Why are Albertans okay with Harper’s refusal to hold an enquiry into the murdered and missing Indigenous women? And his pitting “Old Stock Canadians” against more recent immigrants (despite the fact that we’re all “immigrants,” except perhaps the aboriginals)? His disregard for Syrian refugees? Why did Albertans condone Harper’s secrecy surrounding the signing of the TPP, which will cost taxpayers multi-billions in “protection” money to farmers, seafood and auto industries, while adding a mere three per cent increase to Canada’s already existing NAFTA agreements (and CETA, if/when CETA is ratified)? NAFTA already costs Canadians millions in ISDS (Investor State Dispute Settlement Clauses), which allow foreign investors to sue Canada if they feel their expected future profits threatened. Despite the long list that supports the logic of removing Harper, Albertans supported him...and we are left with the consequences of that Alberta blue wave. T. W. Leithead, Bawlf

Augustana voice faculty will unite in song Oct. 30 Submitted

On Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m., the Augustana voice faculty, Charlene Brown, Kathleen Corcoran and Joy Anne Murphy, will join together again for one evening to present The Art of Song. The concert, presented in the Augustana Faith and Life Chapel, will feature standards of the vocal art song repertoire. As vocal instructors, these three know that the art of communicating through music and words is what defines the classical singer and throughout the centuries great music has been composed to tell great stories. Composers and poets have joined together to not only tell stories but to paint pictures, explore feelings, nature and the great unknown; to, in essence, take us on a journey. Honing skills through the exploration of this vast repertoire is the central component of any singer’s development and mainstay of their performance tool kit. Brown, Corcoran and Murphy have shared the stage several times over their years at Augustana and are pleased to be back together again. They will be joined by fabulous collaborating pianists Roger Admiral and Tova Olson. What better night to come together in telling stories through music than the night before Hallowe’en? This recital is also in keeping with Augustana Campus’s 2015-16 academic theme, “A Time to Play.” Well it’s Hallowe’en and time to play...you’re invited to attend the concert in costume! Hallowe’en treats are available in an after-concert reception sponsored by the Augustana Theme committee. Tickets for the concert are available at the door, with children aged 12 and under being admitted free of charge. Augustana and Conservatory students are admitted free of charge with proper ID.

Why I Wish We Had Elected a Minority Government

When I turned on the television on election night and saw that the Liberal Party had completely swept Atlantic Canada, my reaction was not joy at a change in government, but concern over a government without effective opposition. Canada’s electoral system, which distorts 40 per cent of the popular vote into predictable Shauna Wilton, majority governments, works Political Studies, within a system that has very Augustana Campus, few effective checks on the University of Alberta power of the Prime Minister. Winning a majority of seats in a Parliament that is constrained by strict party discipline, ineffective and partisan committees, and the dominance of an ever increasingly powerful Prime Minister’s office means, effectively, that the Prime Minister can do pretty much whatever he wants. Even when we compare Canada’s Parliament to the one in the UK (on which ours in based), the British PM is not nearly as all-powerful as ours. In fact, the Canadian PM has fewer effective checks on his power than virtually all other democratically elected Western leaders. We are all familiar with the idea that “absolute power corrupts absolutely” and we can certainly see evidence of that in the Canadian system of government. When the Reform Party entered the political scene it advocated, among other things, change in Ottawa: the decentralization of power, effective checks on government, and a reformed Senate to limit the power of the PM. When Stephen Harper eventually became Prime Minister under the new Conservative Party of Canada, he brought those ideas and the populist support behind them with him. Yet, once he secured a majority government, he appeared to become much more concerned with controlling Parliament than with democratic reforms. Instead of reforming the Senate, he stacked it with Conservatives, instructing them to support the government. Thus, an institution that already had problems with democratic legitimacy, became even more of a rubber stamp. Harper increasingly used the powers of proroguing Parliament and closure to further limit debate and discussion within the House of Commons. However, what he will perhaps be remembered for was the control emanating from the PMO and the lack of freedom of information, transparency, and access to cabinet. To be fair, Harper was continuing a tradition of concentrating power in the PMO that started long before him. His actions suggest, however, that once you have power it is increasingly difficult (or undesirable) to make the changes that reduce your power – regardless of how urgently these changes are needed. On Oct. 19, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party was chosen as the new government of Canada with a strong majority of seats. The Liberals campaigned on a program of “Change. Real Change” and their platform outlines a number of ways in which they promise to change the way government works and reinvigorate Canadian democracy. These include: a more open Parliament with empowered governmental watchdogs, stronger committees, more free votes, fewer omnibus bills, reforming the Senate practices and the appointment process, and replacing the first-pastthe-post electoral system with one that more accurately reflects the inputs of Canadian voters. While many pundits saw the Liberal’s win as an antiHarper vote, it was also a vote for the Liberals and their platform (after all, there were other parties we could have voted for). On election night, a triumphant Trudeau restated his message of change, hope, transparency and working together. I just hope that the power of leading a majority doesn’t go to his head and he makes the changes he promised. Regardless of your political leanings, a system of government with less concentrated power, more checks on the governing party and PM, and more transparency and dialogue is a good thing for democracy and all Canadians.

Eye exams revealing More evidence points to the importance of routine eye exams, not only to pinpoint potential conditions of the eye, but also to serve as windows to diseases that affect the entire body. Now more than ever it is essential to make and keep annual eye exams, as they can help to reveal the first signs of serious ailments. There are many systemic diseases that can be seen in the eye. In addition to the conditions mentioned, jaundice can indicate liver disease while retinal detachment and bleeding in new blood vessels may indicate hypertension. By looking at the color of the cornea, some doctors can tell if a patient has elevated levels of cholesterol. Many people have had their eye doctors be the first healthcare professional to detect the presence of their diabetes. If an ophthalmologist suspects an underlying medical condition, he or she will likely refer men and women to their primary care doctors for a more thorough examination. Going to the eye doctor can do more than ensure your vision is sharp. It’s a life-saving decision for many people who have major health conditions diagnosed through the eyes.

Ron Rotvik of Wetaskiwin, left, Jean Billy of Camrose, Marvin Hay of Wetaskiwin and Betty Irving of Camrose were two of 76 teams in the tournament. Henry Fiege and Vic Chwlyk of Sherwood Park won the 32 hands with a score of 11,360. Sylvia Lyon and Bev Schatz of Camrose placed second with a score of 9,840.

Seniors’ Chat November is Falls Prevention Month

As people age, the risk of falling and becoming injured in those falls greatly increases. Falls can result in injuries that limit your ability to move and to remain active and independent. Alberta has seen a sharp rise in fall related hospital admissions and emergency department visits and is noted to have the third highest rate of seniors’ falls admissions in Canada. Research tells us that four of every 10 nursing home admissions are the result of falling. The good news is you can take steps to prevent this from happening to you! Falls prevention isn’t just about stopping falls before they happen. It’s about continuing to enjoy life’s simple moments; it’s about playing with your grandchildren and keeping active with friends and family. Most of all, falls prevention is about keeping your independence. There are many things you can do to help reduce your risk of falling; Watch your step! While walking seems like a natural thing to do for many people – it’s important to pay attention to how you walk. Wherever you are keep pathways, halls and stairways well lit and free of clutter. Watch out for ice, cracks and uneven surfaces

while walking. Walk with your arms out to your sides for balance (not in your pockets). Walk flat-footed and take short steps and walk slowly. As you are walking - keep your head up and concentrate on balance. Ask your healthcare provider about which type of grab bar to use in your bathroom. Have your eyes checked every year. Wear shoes that support your feet and have a closed heel. Avoid rushing and doing too many things at once. Tell your doctor if you often feel dizzy or lightheaded. There are many different causes of dizziness, including some medications. Ask your healthcare provider to test your blood pressure with you lying down and standing up. You may feel dizzy if your blood pressure drops quickly when you get up. After lying in bed or sitting in a chair, clench your fists and circle your ankles 10 times, then take your time and get up slowly. Dehydration can make you dizzy. Drink six to eight glasses of fluids including water each day, or as directed by your healthcare provider. Keep active! Regular physical activity and exer-

cise can increase muscle strength, improve balance and help prevent you from falling. Ask your doctor or healthcare provider about the best type of exercise program for you. Do at least 30 minutes of activity every day. Check your medication. Once a year, have your doctor or pharmacist review all medications. As you age, the way some medications affect you can change and increase your risk of falling. Medications include prescriptions, overthe-counter pills, vitamins and herbal supplements. Medications that relax you, help you sleep or improve your mood can increase your risk of falling. Alcohol affects medication. Be careful. The Camrose Primary Care Network and Alberta Health Services both have programming and services to support individuals and their families cope with the aftermath of someone experiencing falls. For information on local programs, please contact either the Camrose PCN at 780-672-5034 and ask about their Fall Prevention Program or the Healthy Living Centre at 780-608-8683. You can also visit www.camrosepcn.com/STOPfalls or www.findingbalancealberta.ca to learn more.

Kodiaks return with a three game winning streak

Camrose Kodiaks forward Nelson Gadoury battles for the puck in a recent home game for the first place team. The Kodiaks are currently riding a three game winning streak. By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks now have a three game winning streak and a stronger defensive system in place. That showed in recent outings with only three goals allowed in the past four Alberta Junior Hockey League games. “It’s nice to have everyone going again. We are playing well as a team and we have dropped our goals against the last three games,” said Tanner Younghans on the recent success. “It has been positive and we can still elevate our game to be even better.” Camrose blanked the Olds Grizzlys 5-0 in a well played contest in the battle of the bears. Goalie Brodan Salmond stopped all 23 shots he faced to earn the shutout. The Kodiaks fired 44 at the Olds net. “Everybody is buying into the defensive system and our d-zone coverage is getting better. Hopefully, that keeps clicking and things go well for us,” he added. The offence was spread around with Scott Ferguson, Estian Coetzee, Jake Dube and Nelson Gadoury all notching single markers. “Before if we made one mental error it cost us, but we are sharper now and know what we have to do. It has paid off for us the last three games,” said Younghans. “If the other team can’t score, they can’t win. Shutouts are good for the goalies to get their confidence up. It helps our defence and forwards gain confidence as well.” It took the Kodiaks an extra period, but they defeated the Whitecourt Wolverines 3-2. Cole McBride netted the winner just over two minutes into the overtime frame to give the Kodiaks two points. Camrose built up a 2-0 lead in the opening period with tallies from Gadoury and Younghans. The Wolverines kept fighting back until they forced overtime when the team scored on a power play in the third. “This year, as a veteran instead of a rookie, I have more confidence. You just know what you have to do. Now it’s about taking a leadership role and teaching the rookies what they can do,” said Younghans. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 21 of 23 shots he faced. Camrose carried the play for the most part and had 34 shots on goal. It was Gora’s turn to have the hot hand against Okotoks. He stopped all 25 shots directed his way to record the shutout. The Kodiaks pelted Okotoks with 36 shots. McBride led the charge in scoring with two markers. Drew Weich and Younghans netted the others. “Our team is definitely bigger this year and faster. We are a hard team to play against if we play as we can,” explained Younghans. “Teams fear to play you if you are physical and use your speed. It makes a difference.” The team dropped to third place after two straight losses and that didn’t sit well with the players. “We want to be first and you just have to learn from those games. We want to get better and stay in first place. We want other teams to look at us and think they have to beat us,” he added. Camrose is in first place, one point ahead of the Oilers in the south division, as of Oct. 23. Bear facts

Camrose hosts the Brooks Bandits on Nov. 6 in a rare Friday afternoon home game at 3 p.m. in the EnCana Arena. Enjoy the hockey and move over to the Community Centre after the action for the Jordan McIntosh and Brett Kissel concert. On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Calgary Mustangs provide the opposition at 7 p.m. In a scheduling nightmare, the horses will ride back into the city for a rematch on Nov. 10 in a rare back-to-back with a travel series for Calgary.

T.J. (Timothy Jefferson) Dahl T.J. (Timothy Jefferson) Dahl was born in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, AB on Sunday, March 5, 1995; and passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at the age of 20 years. His parents are Terry and Susan Dahl of Donalda, AB; T.J. was the third of four children. He grew up in Donalda where he was both baptized and confirmed in the Sharon Evangelical Lutheran Church, attending Sunday School and enjoying every minute of our annual summer holiday at Living Hope Bible Camp. He attended E.C.S. through grade nine at Donalda School, and graduated from Wm. E. Hay Composite High School at Stettler in 2014. While in junior high, T.J. lived for volleyball and badminton, always wanting to improve his jump, improve his spike, cheering his beloved teammates on to their next victory. In high school, his passion changed to welding, giving a new source of enjoyment and a new-found sense of pride in his own abilities. Still in high school, T.J. discovered another love, his girlfriend Bailey Skorodenski of Calgary. A long-distance high school relationship meant some very long weeks waiting for the weekend, and weekends that were far too short. As time went by, Bailey soon became a part of our family. T.J. played hard and worked hard, always willing to lend a hand, especially if it meant the chance to show off some muscle, or some welding! T.J. was a handsome, mischievous, considerate, fun-loving, tender-hearted young man. He had a beautiful smile that he was willing to share and always had time to stop for a chat. T.J. is survived by his parents Terry and Susan; his sister Selina (Russell) Hellekson; his brothers Steven (Kayla Harper) and Jonathan; one niece Blakely Hellekson; his grandmothers Laura Dahl and Catherine Kneeland; his girlfriend Bailey Skorodenski; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his grandfathers Elmer Dahl and Ervin Kneeland; three aunties; and one uncle. A funeral service for TJ Dahl was held on Sunday, October 18, 2015 in the Donalda Community Hall, Donalda, AB with Pastor Charles Jackson officiating. A loving tribute written by family was presented by friend Albern Bergstrom. Several musical selections were played and sang by family and friends. Prior to the funeral service, TJ was laid to rest in Bethany Cemetery, Donalda, AB with Logan Erickson, Luke Erickson, Levi Erickson, Owen Dahl, Jordan Bauer and Chariti Dahl as active pallbearers; several of TJ’s friends served as honorary pallbearers. Following the service, family and friends shared a time of fellowship and a luncheon prepared by Teresa’s Catering and members of the community. In memory of TJ donations are gratefully accepted to Bethany Lutheran Church or Stollery Children’s Hospital c/o Stettler Funeral Home & Crematorium, Box 1780, Stettler, AB Phone 403-742-3422, who were entrusted with the care and funeral arrangements. Mary Esther Warke December 4, 1919 - October 19, 2015 Mary Warke of Camrose passed away on Monday, October 19, 2015 at the age of 95 years. Mary Esther Bean Ringwall Warke was born to Harry J. Bean and Rev. Olive E. Bean at Lousana, AB. In 1944, Mary was united in marriage to Arthur F. Ringwall of the Red Deer Lake area. To this union was born one daughter Ardith Mary who predeceased Mary in 1999. Arthur passed away in 1960. Mary was always a music lover. Before her parents purchased an instrument, Mary would sit by a table and pretend she was playing a piano. Her love of music followed her throughout her life. While living in the Ferintosh area, she was the Program Convener for the Home and School Association and conducted an orchestra in which she played the piano. She also was the pianist for the local Church of the Nazarene and conducted many musical programs for church and community. In 1961, Mary and her daughter Ardith moved to Camrose where Mary became a financial planner for AGF Mutual Fund for seven years. In 1971, Mary was united in marriage to John Warke of Sherwood Park, AB. John was foreman of a CNR Bridge Gang. They lived on their acreage for 30 years. Mary was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Edmonton where she participated in musical programs, etc. Her last musical contribution was for her church in their outreach ministries at McConnell Place. After the death of her daughter, she no longer felt a desire to play until she bought her keyboard in 2004. John died in January 2002. Mary had a long and fulfilling life as a writer. She wrote many slimline booklets of poetry, prose and photography which have been widely read. Her first poem was written as an assignment in Grade 5 and continued on as a never-ending adventure. She distributed booklets of approximately eight poems therein for patients in St. Mary’s Hospital, and also to the sorrowing and ill persons in the communities of Camrose, Sherwood Park, Edmonton, etc. Mary sold her duplex and moved to Deer Meadows in Camrose, AB in July 2009 where she again used her musical and writing talents. Mary’s outstanding characteristic was that no one had to wonder where she stood on subjects near and dear to her heart. She proclaimed her views loud and clear. Mary leaves to mourn her passing her nieces Rosemary Rittenhouse (Dennis) of Camrose, Rilla Murray (Scot) of Ferintosh, Grace Hellis of Stony Plain, Marion (Stig) Petersson of Wetaskiwin, and Margaret Lindholm of Camrose; nephews Joel Campbell (Sherry) of Vulcan, AB, Brian Campbell (Star), and Gavin Campbell of Edmonton; son-in-law Douglas Storey of Edmonton; sister-in-law Sylvia Warke Tordoff (Verne) of Hay River, NWT: brothers-in-law Alfred Warke and Robert Warke of Castor, AB; cousin Lona Guyer and family, USA; and many other relatives and friends. Mary was predeceased by her first husband Art Ringwall; her second husband John Warke; her daughter Ardith; and one sister Roanna. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2015 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dr. Larry Dahl officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Central Valley Cemetery, Ferintosh. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Olive Bean Memorial Scholarship for Women in Ministry, c/o Ambrose University College, Calgary. Camrose City council has approved a request from Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman to add fourth year Augustana students Carley Angelstad and Kate Gael to the membership of the Camrose Public Library board. Cryderman noted that the students are involved in Augustana’s Community Service Learning program and that allowing them to sit on the board will help them develop their leadership skills. “To the library’s benefit these young people bring a unique perspective that nonstudent members do not and past student board members have had a major impact on the service direction the library has taken,” said Cryderman. The Camrose Public Library and Augustana have a strong history of collaboration, which has resulted in approximately 40 students participating in library operations each semester. “The students develop new skills, contribute to the community, develop new interests and meet a diverse range of people through their participation in the library,” said Cryderman. “They go on to be supporters and library advocates as they leave school.” The Camrose Public Library board is made up of seven members of the public at large, not more than three of whom are from Camrose County and not more than two of whom are students. Crosswalk signage Council has approved the installation of crosswalk signage on an interim basis on 50 Street between the trestle and Creekview subdivision. The adjacent developer will be asked to install a more permanent crosswalk. Organizational meeting Council will hold its 2015 organizational meeting in the council chambers Oct. 26. According to the Municipal Government Act, council must hold an organizational meeting annually, not later than two weeks after the third Monday in October.

2015 Ford F-150 Better than ever before Craig Beddoes

By Dan Jensen

The 2015 Ford F-150 at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose has the highest EPAestimated fuel economy ratings of any full-size gasoline pickup on the market. When equipped with the available 2.7 litre EcoBoost engine the new Ford F-150 4x2 has estimated 14.9 litres per 100 km city, 10.9 litres per 100 km highway and 12.8 litres per 100 km combined fuel economy ratings. Two smaller turbochargers, instead of one large one, pump air quickly into the combustion chambers, generating a virtually instantaneous surge of ondemand power. The flex-fuel 3.5L TiVCT V6 is engineered to handle demanding everyday jobs while keeping operating costs as low as possible. It has a five per cent higher power-to-weight ratio than the previous 3.7 litre V6 and can tow up to 3,447 kg, a 408 kg improvement. The 3.5 litre EcoBoost delivers 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Direct injection technology draws optimum power from every drop of fuel, while twin air-to-air intercooled turbochargers provide the surge of on-demand power when you need it. The proven, durable 5.0

litre V8 has 385 horsepower and 387 lb.-ft. of torque, which has improved from the 2014 model year. This engine has a 16 per cent higher power-to-weight ratio than before. The engine was built with twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) technology. With conventional valve cam timing, the intake and exhaust valves have to open and close at a fixed point, compromising performance. But Ti-VCT virtually eliminates this compromise. Variable control of valve cam timing optimizes performance across the entire low, mid and high ranges of the power band to match the driving conditions, all the while burning fuel with impressive efficiency. The standard electronic six-speed close-ratio transmission has a wide gear ratio for responsive low-end performance and enhanced fuel efficiency at the higher gears. The selectable tow/ haul mode improves performance when towing or hauling heavy loads. It compensates for grade and load and reduces gear hunting to improve on power delivery. Engine braking also helps slow the truck when descending hills. The available SelectShift® automatic has two modes of operation: Pro-

gressive Range Select lets you limit the range of gears to lock out overdrive for consistent speed over hills and mountain ranges. With Full Manual mode, you can go all the way up and down the gearbox, staying fully in control. Lighter

The new Ford F-150 is lighter by up to 317 kg thanks to the use of military grade aluminum that is the same high-strength grade used in the aerospace industry. Aluminum is resistant to dents and corrosion and its scrap can be reclaimed and sent back into the manufacturing process to minimize waste. The new fully boxed frame is made of more highstrength steel (more than 70 per cent at 70,000 psi) and larger cross sections than the previous frame. And while stronger and more rigid, this frame is lighter because many of the components are fabricated using the state-of-the-art roll-forming process that minimizes weight. Ford torture-tested the F-150 in labs, over highaltitude passes and through desert valleys, while hauling huge loads and towing heavy trailers at temperatures from -29 to 49 degrees Celsius. Ford also put F-150s in

the hands of people in heavy industries such as mining and construction who really know how to take a pickup to the extremes of durability. The cab redefined

The F-150 cab was redefined to help you work smarter and more productively. One hundred and 70 degree swing-out rear doors on SuperCab make for easier entry and exit, loading and unloading. The fully flat load floor has more under-seat storage space than ever – now in both the SuperCab and SuperCrew®. The new power sliding rear window is a seamless piece of glass with a power sliding centre section that seals tightly when closed and allows for the use of the defroster even when open The beltline of the doors was lowered by up to two inches and the front pillars were moved forward to improve visibility. The available classexclusive 360° camera with split-view display and dynamic hitch assist uses four cameras – one in the grille, tailgate, and under each of the sideview mirrors. The system enables you to see all sides of the truck and surrounding area by stitching the imag-

es together and displaying them on a centre stack screen. It’s helpful when manoeuvring in tight parking spaces, job sites and trails. The dynamic hitch assist feature provides a line-of-sight guide in an instrument panel display to help direct your hitch ball to the trailer receiver. The new available LCD productivity screen on the instrument cluster (part of SYNC® with MyFord Touch®) provides updated information from fuel efficiency to towing tips. You can create a customized “MyView” home screen to access your most frequently used screens in one place. The menu includes gauge setup, trip computer, fuel consumption, and towing/ off-road applications. The productivity screen is standard in F-150 Lariat, King Ranch® and Platinum. A 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen is optional in F-150 XL and standard in XLT. The F-150 has lots of places to store the assortment of things you carry inside the cab – plus nearly twice the front storage space than before. You can see the 2015 Ford F-150 at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Kodiaks trade because of injuries Cooks By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks will probably make three trades before the deadline in early December. General manager and coach Boris Rybalka made one move already because of injuries, not because the team was struggling. “We are looking for guys because we were decimated with injuries. Two guys are out with wrist injuries, which isn’t fun. It is the bone in the thumb area of the wrist and it takes time to heal,” explained Rybalka. “We have other injuries and it’s the hand we have been dealt. We had 10 forwards and we couldn’t keep playing like that. We played with 10 for about two and half weeks and the guys have been phenomenal, but we had to get some help.” The Kodiaks had 10 forwards, seven defencemen and were returned goalie Keelan Williams from the Western Hockey League, to give them three goalies. The math of too many players in some areas and not enough in others sparked the first move. “We have a surplus of goalies and 20-year-olds, so we have to make some decisions in the next few weeks,” stated Rybalka. “It’s tough, but we have been up-front with everyone.” Help arrived in the form of Mackenzie Bauer from the Lloydminster Bobcats. “When Bauer came available from Lloydminster we jumped at him. We knew the player – assistant coach Blair Becker previously coached him – and knew he would fit right in,” coach Rybalka said. “He is a smart hockey player who sees the ice well and makes things happen out there.” Bauer was caught in a numbers game as a 19-yearold with the Bobcats, who are juggling the lineup to go for the Royal Bank Cup as hosts of the event. “He fits right in with us as a two-way hockey player,” Rybalka added. Bauer was very excited to come here.” Rybalka isn’t scared to make a couple more moves before the deadline. “My favourite saying is ‘the day you think you are the best, or don’t have to work is the day you could go down.’ I know the players respect that the staff is always a step ahead of everyone else.” Bauer has a goal and three assists in 10 games this season with the Bobcats and the Kodiaks. He will cost the Kodiaks a player in return in future considerations. Only seven players on Camrose have played in every game this season.
