Police treating trailer fire as suspicious November 16

Police attended the north end of the city for a call of a holiday trailer that was on fire. When police arrived they located the trailer with smoke coming out of it. As well, the trailer appeared to be damaged. Camrose Fire Department attended and put out the fire and the trailer was secured for fire investigators to follow up on. At this point the Camrose Police Service is treating this fire as suspicious and any information regarding the fire can be forwarded to them.

Service honours those who live with war By Murray Green

Royal Canadian Legion Camrose branch master of ceremonies Bill Hart led the Remembrance Day Service that honoured those who still live with war in their minds everyday, fell in battle, are veterans of the wars, participated in peacekeeping missions and gave their lives in the defence of our freedom. After Fred Clarke read In Flanders Fields, Chaplain Mary Ann Pastuck had a call to worship and Grace Torpe shared a scripture reading. Guest speaker Father Jacques Vaillancourt, of St. Andrew’s Church in Camrose, recalled his service in the military. “I was a military chaplain for 20 years and then retired from service to join civilian church ministry,” he said. The quest speaker talked about post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how war affects soldiers for the rest of their lives. “What we do now will define us as we remember in this 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Think of a 10-year-old girl now flying a kite, an activity once forbidden by the Taliban. In my own way, this is a ray of hope for me to honour families and veterans. We remember, but we must do more than just remember. Ours is too great a nation and the need for healing of those who suffered is too acute to be anything but our highest priorities,” he said. Father Vaillancourt suggested we don’t give in to fiscal restraint, and fund programs for those wounded by PTSD.

Legion president Bob Burt lays a wreath at the Remembrance Day service.

“We are compelled in our turn to act decisively. If we do, then this day

has real meaning,” he said. “Our resolve needs to be as strong as the

battlefield courage of our brave veterans and their families whom we

remember and honour today.” The attitude towards PTSD is changing slowly, but the nightmares of reliving those experiences aren’t going away. Only a few make a full recovery. Mayor Norm Mayer added his message. “This day we honour those veterans who are with us today and also those who are not here today. We honour all who gave us this wonderful way of life we enjoy today,” said Mayer. “You heard the reading of In Flanders Fields written by Canadian Dr. John McCrae during the First World War. It is the 100th anniversary of the poem and a long time to remember a poem that will not be forgotten. We hope the same is true for all of our veterans, those fortunate to come home and those that were unable to make it home. We thank them all. We appreciate what they have done for us and for our country. It is important to remember history and to know what is going on in our world. We pray for those who are on the front lines for their safe return as we support their families while they are away.” Legion members and cadets from South Alberta Light Horse Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and Air Cadets in Camrose participated in the service. The CCHS band provided music. The service ended with a poem reading from Lisa Kozak, the laying of wreaths and a parade march.

Council adopts declaration By Dan Jensen

City council received a prolonged ovation from Camrose residents after adopting a Blue Dot declaration that states all people have the right to live in a clean environment. The City agreed to consider cost effective measures to prevent the degradation of the environment and to protect the health of its citizens, consider costs to human health and the environment when evaluating reasonably foreseeable costs of proposed actions and alternatives, integrate into its strategic plan objectives, targets and actions that fulfill the rights of residents to a healthy environment. The City will also send letters to the provincial and federal governments calling for the development of legislation that recognizes the right of all people to live in a clean environment. The declaration was drafted by City administration after consultation with the Camrose Blue Dot group. “Administration believes that the current declaration is aligned with the Camrose Strategic Plan and presents little risk,” said manager Malcolm Boyd. While 84 municipalities across Canada have signed the declaration, Camrose is the first city in Alberta to do so. Councillor Bill Sears thanked the Camrose Blue Dot group for the work it has done with the declaration. “It is a really good initiative and speaks a lot to what our citizens believe in,” he said. Councillor Agnes Hoveland thanked Blue Dot Camrose leader/spokesman Rajan Rathnavalu for the deliberate and thoughtful way he brought the declaration forward. “You can be extremely proud,” she said. City administration will continue to work with Blue Dot Camrose to explain to residents what the declaration means to them. Racing pigeons City council has referred to its advisory committee a proposal to change the land use bylaw to allow racing pigeons to be kept in Camrose. Under current regulations, pigeons are considered livestock and as such are prohibited within corporate limits unless permission has been applied for and permission granted by the development officer. Calgary and Edmonton allow racing pigeons to be kept provided they meet regulations with regard to every dimension, number of birds, the removal of droppings, and the times and dates they are allowed to fly. Any enforcement activity would place greater demands on Camrose bylaw enforcement staff.

Rasmussen honoured for dedication By Dan Jensen When Michiko Rasmussen moved to a farm outside of Bawlf in 1973 she couldn’t believe how little people knew about Japan and its people. “The questions they asked were really peculiar,” said Michiko, who was honoured by the City of Camrose for her volunteer work with the Camrose Japan Friendship Society Oct. 19. Wishing to rectify the problem, Michiko and her husband, Stanley, took every opportunity that was presented to them to fill in the gaps of knowledge. They were delighted in 1980 when the governments of Alberta and Hokkaido, Japan, signed a twinning agreement, and even happier four years later when Michiko was asked to be a translater when the mayor of Kamifurano, Japan, a city the same size as Camrose, and then Camrose mayor Rudy Swanson met to discuss a twinning agreement of their own. “Mayor Swanson knew me because he had a farm at Bawlf like us,” said Michiko. The initial meeting between the mayors resulted in Mayor Swanson making a trip to Kamifurano in 1985 to sign an official twinning agreement. Mayor Si Siwak and his wife, Lucy, made the same trip a few years later, followed by Mayor Norm Mayer and his wife Betty in 1997 for Kami-

furano’s 100th anniversary celebration. “Mayor Mayer made a speech and I translated,” said Michiko. Along with the official City visits, Michiko has coordinated trips to Japan by several school groups, including one by current City councillor Max Lindstrand and 50 students from Camrose Composite, who stayed in Japanese homes and were able to experience the Japanese culture a level deeper than it would have been able to experience otherwise. “Everything was completely different for them,” said Michiko. “They learned how to take a bath (the Japanese way) and they learned how important it was to take off their shoes in the home’s front entry. Some of the students really liked the sushi. They never got fat because (the homes in Japan) don’t have any deep fried food.” Michiko takes pride in the fact that she was always able to accommodate the wishes of officials from both Kamifurano and Camrose. “As soon as I heard what they wanted to do I would start to take action,” she said. Michiko paid for all her own flights to Japan and never charged anyone for her time. She is thankful for the support she received from her husband, Stanley, before the Camrose Japan Friendship Society was

Mayor Norm Mayer and city council presented a plaque to Michiko in recognition of her continuing support to the commitment of friendship from the original twinning agreement in 1985 between the City of Camrose and the Town of Kamifurano. formed and a budget could be developed to welcome visitors. Michiko was in Kamifurano this past September where she was honoured at a reception for all her con-

tributions. She no longer serves as president of the Camrose Japan Friendship Society, but will stay involved with the organization in an advisory capacity.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson

Letters to the Editor

Encouraging trends

Last week I mentioned that a Booster reader sent me a note saying, in part… “Would like to suggest the topic of elder abuse and bullying regarding seniors. Hoping you will use the power of your pen to bring this subject to light.” I did write about elder abuse. The person who sent that note probably didn’t know that since 1984 I’ve researched, written and given presentations about, designed and helped implement programs for, designed and delivered training about, evaluated and generally been immersed in issues of elder abuse, bullying, child abuse, domestic violence, abuse of vulnerable people, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, sexual assault, abuse by caregivers, workplace harassment, cultural abuse… I became somewhat of an expert in abuse between human beings – the dynamics of abuse, prevalence, how to recognize signs that someone is being abused, what sometimes helps, what makes it worse, conditions in which all forms of abuse are more likely… ***

I did not decide to become an expert in this topic. It started as a professional writing project. Very quickly I learned this was not just an intellectual or professional exercise. I knew more about abuse than I imagined. I remembered experiences that, at the time, I thought were just “the way things are” but that I would now define as abuse. More slowly, I came to a darker realization. Not only had I been subjected to abusive behaviours, but I was capable of being abusive towards others. As much as I deplored violence and abuse between human beings, in certain circumstances I too was capable of – and in fact had been – abusive towards others. The day I recognized that was the day I got more useful. I also got a twinge more compassionate of those who abuse others, not to condone abuse, but to understand how it could happen. ***

During Family Violence Prevention Month and the 30th anniversary of the women’s shelter in Camrose, I’d like to add to the conversation. This week I’m mentioning some encouraging trends I’ve noticed since 1984. Next week I’ll add some thoughts about prevention. ***

“The way things are” is changing. Not only abuse in families but other kinds of violent or abusive behaviours that once were acceptable are not. It’s been a few generations since “spare the rod and spoil the child” was widely considered good parenting. Most Alberta school districts forbid physical punishment of students. Schoolyard bullying was once just a fact of life; now we have Safe and Caring Schools initiatives. We haven’t eliminated bullying or physical abuse but we recognize that it’s wrong and it matters. Abusive behaviour is no longer as socially acceptable. Attitudes are changing. Thirty years ago, when volunteers were fundraising for a women’s shelter in Camrose, one presentation was to an all-male service club. The presentation was received with courtesy, but after the presenters left, some club members didn’t think the club should donate to the shelter because it would encourage women to leave their husbands. A few people may still think that way, but I doubt they would now say it out loud in a service club meeting. More help is available. Police, health practitioners, social workers and others are more knowledgeable and better equipped to recognize abuse, understand the dynamics and provide support that actually helps protect people from further abuse. It’s safer to speak out. In the past few years, highprofile cases of sexual assault and abuse have been widely publicized. In the cases I’ve heard about, the abuse happened for years but nobody did anything to stop it. People who were abused were afraid to speak out. If they did, either nothing happened or the person who disclosed was disbelieved, stifled, punished or fired while the abusive person continued to abuse. Thanks to a few brave people, it’s now safer to speak out and much more likely that action will be taken to shut down the abusive person.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Family Doctor Week The Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) once again celebrated Family Doctor Week in Canada (Nov. 9 to 14). This was the 12th annual Family Doctor Week in Canada – acknowledging the outstanding contributions of Canadian family doctors for their dedication to their patients and the delivery of high-quality health care. This year I would like to recognize the hard work and efforts of Dr. Letley, Dr. Bick and Dr. Jorgensen in support of rural placement opportunities for medical students and physician attraction and retention. Dr. Jorgensen has been instrumental in promoting and coordinating opportunities for third year medical students interested in being placed in a rural community for approximately 36 weeks.

During this time students are provided with continuous patient care, preceptor supervision and learning experiences. Over the past six months Dr. Letley and Dr. Bick have taken more of a leadership role in physician attraction and retention efforts for Camrose. In addition to screening interested physician recruits, both Dr. Letley and Dr. Bick have coordinated and participated in pre-recruitment visits, as well as opened their home to Canadian and foreign trained physicians interested in practicing and relocating to this community. As a result of these efforts, I believe the City of Camrose and Camrose County are well positioned to not only recruit physicians seeking current practice opportunities but also attract future physicians once their training is complete. At this time, I also wish to acknowledge Dr. Valerie Smith, who was recently nominated for the 2015 Alberta Rural Physician Award of Distinction sponsored by the Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP). As a finalist for this award, Dr. Smith certainly emulates the award profile of a physician practicing in an Alberta rural community offering outstanding medical services and making huge contributions to

medical practice and her community. Congratulations Dr. Smith on being a finalist for this award. In closing, I encourage you to please take a moment to acknowledge and thank your family doctor. A listing of all our Camrose PCN family doctors can be found at www.camrosepcn.com. Stacey L. Strilchuk, executive director, Camrose Primary Care Network Overpass needed Thank you Mike Enright for bringing very important info to the foreground. As a resident of the west end (north), I had a hard time understanding how a limited few people could have the city block off access to Cornerstone for many people from 53 Street west. Now those people must use Highway 13, which is busy and scary for elderly drivers. The overpass is a nobrainer and should have been done long ago for medical and fire reasons alone. Now, of course, we have longer trains and more rail traffic, which can only get worse. Let the people that use the arts centre raise the money needed and put the taxpayers’ money to a better use. First natural gas customer signs on with Camrose Energy LOCAL CONNECTION NOW LICENSED TO RETAIL GAS

Actual ad published in The Camrose Booster on November 3, 2015

Sometimes others say it better than we ever could...

Camrose Energy owner Denise Hawkins welcomes Cody McCarroll and Habitat for Humanity as the first customer for the energy company’s natural gas retailing service.

When you sign up with Camrose Energy for electricity or natural gas, 10 percent of its profits are donated to nonprofit community partners. Habitat for Humanity has been one of those community partners that has benefitted from this unique program since Camrose Energy was launched three years ago to be a retailer of electricity. Now Camrose Energy has been licensed by the provincial government to also be a retailer of natural gas. “We have had customers asking us for natural gas since we opened. We are so pleased to be able to offer a local option now,” says Denise Hawkins who owns Camrose Energy along with her husband Russell. Their customers now have the option to sign on with Camrose Energy for natural gas and electricity. They’re also excited about having Habitat for Humanity as their first natural gas customer. “We love Habitat’s belief that they are giving a hand up, not a hand out. They work to give hard-working families a chance to step out of poverty,” says Denise. To support a local business and local organizations just by paying your utility bills, call 780-781-4115 or go to www.camroseenergy.com. RUSSELL AND DENISE HAWKINS

Grateful Grannies Christmas Market at Bailey Nov. 21 Marijuana Legalization as Harm Reduction

The legalization of marijuana was a somewhat controversial issue in the recent election. The Conservatives vowed to keep marijuana a prohibited substance while the Liberals and NDP advocated legalization. Now that Trudeau and the Liberals are in power, it will be interesting to see how committed they are to pursuing this policy Geraint Osborne and, if so, how it will be Sociology, implemented. This legal Augustana Campus, reform is much needed University of Alberta and would follow on the heels of other governments moving in this direction. Indeed, many governments and their citizens have come to the informed conclusion that the war on drugs in general has been a dismal failure, causing more harm than good, and that a more effective strategy countering drug abuse must be developed. And this is what most opponents of marijuana legalization misunderstand. When they hear legalization, they automatically think that legalization proponents are advocating, indeed encouraging, marijuana use in society. That is simply not the case. Legalization should be thought of in terms of regulation, control, and safety, not just in terms of libertarianism. In other words, legalization is an important foundational element of the broader harm reduction approach to drug use and abuse in society. Harm reduction means many things to many people, but essentially it refers to policies and programmes that reduce the negative health, social, and economic consequences that may result from the use and misuse of drugs. Harm reduction advocates argue that we must face facts and acknowledge that we are a drug using society – of both legal and illegal drugs. Every day I see huge line-ups at Tim Hortons or Starbucks as people get their morning caffeine fix from these safe consumption sites. At the end of the work day, people unwind in bars, pubs (again, think safe consumption sites), or at home with alcohol conveniently and safely purchased from liquor stores. People self-medicate with pain killers, sleep aides, diet pills and so on. You get the picture. The point is, historically and cross-culturally, all people have used drugs for a wide variety of reasons. People have always used drugs and will continue to use drugs. Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug world-wide. Millions of Canadians use it and many more have used at some point in their lives. Where there is a demand, there will be a supply. So we can either allow the bad guys - organized crime - to provide the supply and profit from it, or we can allow our governments and businesses to do it. This is regulation. It leads to a safer product which can be taxed. That tax money can be put into the health system to help people with addictions and into drug education programs to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse and the principles of responsible drug use. This type of approach works for alcohol and nicotine, and there is no reason to believe that it would not work for marijuana. As such, harm reduction advocates do not view marijuana use as a crime issue, but rather as a health and education issue. People who use marijuana responsibly should be left alone. Those who misuse it are not in need of punishment from the criminal justice system, but rather medical intervention. We need to recognize that marijuana on its own doesn’t cause crime, but the prohibition of it sure does. We’ve gone through this before, folks. The United States, and Canada to some extent, tried alcohol prohibition and it didn’t work. In fact, it made things worse. It led to the production and consumption of dangerous liquor, and provided a huge impetus for the growth of organized crime, which intensified gangland violence and fostered corruption within the criminal justice system. We quickly learned our lesson. Sadly, it’s taken us much longer with marijuana. But the people have spoken, and now it’s time for the government to act.

This year the Grateful Grannies’ Christmas market will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 12 to 4 p.m., once again at the beautiful historic Bailey Theatre. “We will keep many things the same,” said Janet Galenza, chair of the Christmas Market committee, “including a wide variety of unique and high quality home-made crafts and baking. The baking has been very popular the last few years so we are hoping to have even more than last year. We are expanding our hours this year and have also been busy with the addition of “ugly Christmas sweaters.” The Grateful Grannies were thrilled this year to receive a sizeable donation from the Battle River Shrine Club to completely cover the cost of renting the Bailey Theatre. The Shrine club’s mandate fits well with that of the Grannies. Members of the Grateful Grannies plus local artisans donate items for the sale. If you want to donate any handmade items for the market please contact Janet Galenza at 780-679-2676. “There will be one-of-a- kind local crafts, jewelry and accessories, household gifts, art and glassware, Christmas and specialty cards, quilted and knit or crocheted items, nativity scenes and of course the popular AIDS Angels,” said Galenza. The Christmas market is a time for shopping, meeting friends, drinking hot apple cider and snacking on savory nibbles. The addition of live music definitely makes the experience memorable and is a wonderful addition to the market. All proceeds from the sale go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign. This is one of the Grateful Grannies’ key fundraising initiatives. The Grateful Grannies are comprised of over 100 grandmothers and grand “others” from Camrose and area who are committed to supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmother campaign. The Grateful Grannies are one of over 245 grandmother groups across Canada who raise funds to assist grandmothers in 15 countries in sub-Saharan Africa as they care for a generation of orphaned grandchildren and others affected by AIDS/HIV. Over 12 million children have been orphaned by AIDS on that continent. The African grandmothers, despite their hardships, have become the heart and energy behind the response to the pandemic. The Stephen Lewis Foundation works with community-level groups in Africa to provide a wide range of supports, including feeding programs, housing, education assistance, and counselling. These grassroots organizations are driving the response to the AIDS pandemic in ways that are innovative, sophisticated and impactful. The Christmas Market committee includes Janet Galenza, Sue Wolfe, Lisa Alain, Carolyn Anderson and Leslie Koehli, plus all the members who contribute in some way. For more information about the event contact Janet Galenza at 780-679-2676. Mark the date on the calendar and invite a friend to join you.

JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL ACTION

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Ecole Charlie Killam School Grade 7 volleyball player Megan Kowal bumps a return while teammate Nalyn Tindall watches during a game against the Bawlf squad. Tripleball was the format that was used in order to help younger teams develop their skills. In a three point sequence there is a serve for first point, a toss to one team from the other side of the net, and a final toss from the team which previously tossed. This allows for more rally time and touches on the ball. Once the three point sequence is completed, it is repeated over and over again until there is an eventual winner.

Larson, Evelyn Nell Eileen “Nell” 1928 – 2015

It is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Nell Larson. Nell was born in Peace River, AB on December 15, 1928 and passed away peacefully in Invermere, BC on November 9, 2015 at the age of 86 years. Nell was a longtime resident of Red Deer and worked for more than 25 years for the Red Deer Public School District as Secretary at Oriole Park School before she retired. A few years later, she moved to Calgary and then on to Invermere to be closer to her family. Nell was a wonderful mother and a very proud grandmother. Spending time with her family was the most important part of her life, always putting others before herself. We had many happy holiday celebrations and vacations as a family over the years. Nell was predeceased by her husband Clarence Larson in 1975, and her daughter Donna Cooper in 2010. Nell is survived by her daughters Peggy (Jeff) Thompson and Barb (Darrell) Smith; and her grandchildren Bruce (Courtney) Thompson, Kristen (Mike) Newby, Sara Thompson, Olivia Smith and Daniel Smith; and two great-grandchildren Violet Thompson and Finlay Newby. A memorial service for Nell will be held at Parkland Funeral Home in Red Deer, AB (6287-67A Street – Taylor Drive) on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley, Box 925, Invermere, BC V0A 1K0. Catherine “Cathee” Elizabeth Young September 12, 1960 – November 8, 2015 Catherine “Cathee” Elizabeth Young of Hay Lakes, AB passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the age of 55 years. Catherine Elizabeth (nee Cor) Young was born on September 12, 1960 in Cochenour, ON, the third child to Matt and Theresa Cor. The majority of Catherine’s youth was spent growing up in Uranium City and Eldorado, SK. In 1979, Cathee’s first son, Nicholas, was born. In 1980, she had her second son, Réal. In 1987, she married the love of her life, John, and together they had two more sons: Jacob born in 1989 and Matija born in 1990. Many happy family times were spent vacationing, camping and just being a family. Some of the most important things to Cathee were good food, good friends and, most importantly, family. Cathee was a devoted sister, daughter, friend, mother, Grammie and wife. To know Cathee was to know true love and loyalty. Cathee is survived by her loving husband, John; four sons Nicholas (Melissa) LaFrance, Réal (Lisa) LaFrance, Jacob and Matija Young; grandchildren Taylor and Jacob LaFrance; brothers Richard (Cathy) Cor of Falun, and Michael (Lori) Cor of Sherwood Park; sisters Angie (Ivan) Selin of East Hay Lakes, and Colleen (James) Ewen of Sherwood Park; as well as many nieces and nephews. You taught us so much about life and how to think for ourselves. You influenced our lives with your interest and life experience. You always had a piece of advice when needed, a serious thought or a funny story. We wish we would have had you awhile longer, but we count our blessings that you were our father because there is no one else we would have wanted. Thanks for all the memories! May God care for you as you cared for us. Your children, Noella, Karen, James

Jeffrey Blaeser who passed away on November 25, 1991 They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache that lies behind our smiles. No one knows how many times we have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something so there won’t be any doubt. You’re so wonderful to think of, but so hard to be without. Love from Mom and Dad

Sultans of String offer fun music from around the world By Murray Green

Juno award nominees Sultans of String will be sharing fun music with sounds from worldly music at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Friday, Nov. 20, beginning at 8 p.m. “We are excited to perform for Camrose music fans on a trip around the world, musically,” said Chris McKhool of the Sultans of String. “We also tell stories of Canada through our music.” Sultans of String is an instrumental music group based in Toronto, Ontario, that combines Spanish flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz with folk music. They have been known to play fiery violin dances with a rumba-flamenco guitar. Acoustic strings meet with electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound, while world rhythms bring audiences to their feet with the irresistible need to dance. “Musicians from around the world end up in Toronto and music is shared, which has given us a wide variety of choose from,” said McKhool. “We like to tell stories through music about all of the places we have been to and people we meet.” McKhool grew up in a Lebanese-Egyptian house

bursting with music and diversity that included violin lessons. “Alberta audiences are fantastic to play for,” he said. “They are eager and open minded. To play music there is always a thrill for us. Alberta audiences have fun and clap along with us and have a great time. It is nice to be able to bring new music to them.”

When McKhool first heard guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (both formerly with Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm, their musical synergy created Sultans of String’s signature sound of intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. From this rich foundation, the dynamic duo has grown to feature bassist Drew Birston (Chan-

tal Kreviazuk) and Cuban percussionist Chendy Leon (Parachute Club). “We will play some songs from our new album Subcontinental Drift. I’m looking forward to playing at the new theatre with a great sound system,” said McKhool. P romoter Dav id Wi l kes (Emmylou Harris and Joan Baez) said “Over the decades, I’ve worked

with numerous top 10 and number one Billboard artists. In all that time, I have not worked with composers more talented than McKhool and Laliberté from Sultans of String. Not only are they a superb writing team, they are also amazing arrangers and musicians.” The band will spend a week in Alberta. “It is a time for us to connect with western fans and gain experience with different types of audiences. Whether you live in the big cities or in the rural area, there is something you can take away from this show,” McKhool said. “I love to hear the feedback. That is what is different when you perform live. I like to see how people react to different sounds and songs. It is great for us to fine tune our craft.” Five albums include Yalla Yalla!, Move, Subcontinental Drift, Symphony! and Luna. “The last time we were in Alberta it was performing songs from Symphony! and it was with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, which was a whole different experience,” said McKhool. “Now we will have more of an eastern music sound.” Tickets are available at the LPAC box office.

A few easy tricks to help your gift wrapping go smoothly People have varying degrees of gift wrapping abilities. Some excel at those creased corners and perfect bows, while others are less adept at wrapping. Wrapping gifts is an essential element of the holiday season. Fortunately, there are a few tricks-of-the-trade to make the process of wrapping gifts go quickly and smoothly. Stock up on doublesided tape. Wrapping with double-sided tape helps avoid

unsightly tape lines and creates a neat finished product. Use a toilet paper tube to preserve wrapping paper rolls and keep them from unravelling. Simply cut the tube lengthwise and snap it over the open roll of paper to serve as a handy clip to keep the paper tidy. When you lose the edge of the tape on a roll, it can take precious time trying to find it again. Use a plastic bread clip to hold the place

of the edge of the tape to prevent this from happening. Turn snack containers into handy gift wrap options. Empty potato chip cannisters can be wrapped and used to hold other food gifts or smaller stocking stuffers. Turn a foil-lined chip or popcorn bag inside out, first cleaning away any grease and crumbs, and use the bag to wrap a gift and tie off the end with a decorative ribbon. Wooden spoons or popsicle sticks can make clever

gift tags. Poke a hole in the end and tie onto your gift. Use a piece of fabric to wrap a present if you’re not too skilled with traditional paper. Fabric can be reused and is more durable, and you won’t run the risk of tearing an edge or poking a hole through it. This is especially useful for oddly shaped gifts. Newsprint tied with natural cord and some pine boughs is an inexpensive, classic-looking gift wrap.

Brown mailing paper can be used in a pinch. Stamp images on the paper to customize the gift wrap and use ribbons and bows to further dress things up. Always work on a hard, flat surface, as a soft surface makes it more difficult to control wrapping paper and you’re more likely to tear. Use a gift box or cardboard to create a firm container to wrap soft gifts.

Blanch the walnut pieces for one minute in boiling water. Let them cool to the touch. Remove the papery bitter skins by rubbing gently. Peel them as much as you can. If the skin is left on, the sauce may taste bitter.

Wow! Now that’s a body shop!

Place the walnuts in a bowl, cover with milk to soak, and chill them overnight in the refrigerator. THE DAY OF: Roast the chilies by placing directly over flame of a gas stove, or place under a hot broiler. Char the outside on all sides. Blacken as much of the outside skin as possible. Place chilis in a bowl and cover with plate or damp clean towel and let sit for 20 minutes. The burned skin will flake off easily and the flesh will steam cook. Slit the side of each chili to remove seeds and veins. Leave the top of the chili and base of the stem intact. (If peppers are too spicy, soak in mild vinegar and water for 30 min.) Rinse chilis and pat dry. Drain walnuts. Place all sauce ingredients in blender and purée until smooth. Heat one Tbsp. of oil in large wide saucepan on medium-high heat. Brown the meat on at least one side, in batches, while sprinkling with salt. Add oil if necessary and set cooked meat aside in bowl. Add Tbsp. oil to pan and cook onion on medium heat until soft. Add cinnamon, black pepper, cloves and garlic. Cook for another minute. Melt butter in pan, add in the meat and break up any clumps. Add tomatoes, raisins, and chopped almonds. If mixture appears dry, add a Tbsp. or two of water. Add chopped apple. Adjust spices, add more cinnamon, salt and cloves to taste. (Go easy on the cloves.) Stuff the chilis with the picadillo stuffing until filled. Place on individual plates or serving platter. Cover the chilies with walnut sauce and sprinkle with pomegranate and chopped parsley or cilantro.

Involve family members with Christmas decorations The festive season will soon be here and now is the time to decorate your home for Christmas. Rather than feel like this is a chore to be done alone, why not involve your family and turn it into a fun activity for everyone! The centrepiece of holiday decorations is, of course, the majestic Christmas tree adorned with beautiful ornaments. If your ornaments are looking a little worn, you can create new ones with different decorative objects, such as pine cones. You can also create some unique Christmas ornaments.

Styrofoam balls and glue can be found in art supply stores or in the arts and crafts section of any department store and there are endless ways of decorating them. You can cover the balls with all sorts of different materials: papier-mâché, fabric, felt, silk paper, metallic sequins, pearls, coloured cardboard discs. Use several different colours and materials if you want to create a colourful effect for your Christmas tree or simply limit yourself to one or two materials with similar colours for a more conservative style.

To hang the ornaments on the tree, insert hooks from old ornaments into the styrofoam or use paper clips that have been cut in two. Apart from the Christmas tree, other decorations can embellish your home including an illuminated centrepiece trimmed with evergreens, a salt dough garland or paper snowflakes glued to the windows. If you love home perfumes you could create a decorative bowl of spiced citrus fruits. Just stick some whole cloves into a few oranges, clementines, or tangerines.

Blake Shelton By Murray Green

The line-up for the 24th annual Big Valley Jamboree is coming together with the addition of some of the biggest names in country music agreeing to visit Camrose next summer. At the close of last year’s performance, it was announced that Carrie Underwood would be making a return appearance to the main stage. She made her BVJ debut in 2007 and her upcoming album Storyteller, is a continuation of her growth since that time. Blake Shelton will also make a return to the main stage. After taking time off for the television series The Voice, he is coming back to perform his latest hits, along with some old favourites. The crowd at BVJ wanted to see Dierks Bentley return and his schedule aligned to make that happen. Bentley already has eight albums under his belt. Joining them will be Sam Hunt with his unique approach to country music. His country rock style is a hit with people who like to dance and want more energy in the live shows. Hunt currently has a hit with fellow BVJ star Underwood in the duet “Heartbeat.” If you want high energy then don’t miss this show. The outdoor festival is slated for July 28 to 31. 2016 Ford Escape Spirited driving experience Matt McLeod

By Dan Jensen

The 2016 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose brings a chic package, offering customers advanced technology, style, great fuel economy and a spirited driving experience. Escape offers three different engines: a 2.5 litre Duratec, a 1.6 litre EcoBoost and a 2.0 litre EcoBoost. The standard 2.5 litre Duratec puts a zippy 168 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque at your disposal. The 1.6 litre EcoBoost uses twin independent variable camshaft timing to emphasize fuel efficiency or power output as your input demands. It has a rating of 7.4 litres per 100 km highway and produces 178 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque for lively acceleration and passing performance. The 2.0 litre EcoBoost produces 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. With 90 per cent of its peak torque available from 1,750 to 4,500, it helps you make the most of every drive. EcoBoost eng ine torque is specially engi-

neered to provide a fluid shifting experience and enhanced fuel economy. The available intelligent all-wheel-drive system uses software and sensors to analyze data from 25 external signals, including wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle. The system uses the sensor inputs to help the driver turn the vehicle – adding and subtracting torque as needed via an electromagnetic clutch to deliver confident handling and traction performance in a variety of conditions. The Escape also has Curve Control technology to assist the driver by automatically slowing the vehicle when it’s cornering too fast. Torque Vectoring Control applies brake force to the front inside wheel so that more engine torque can be applied to the outside wheel. The result is better handling and traction. Active Grille Shutters can be adjusted on the 2.5 litre and 1.6 litre models for greater fuel efficiency. Escape’s EcoBoost engines come standard with specially calibrated

six-speed select shift automatic transmissions that can provide a more handson experience via manual gear selection control. The Class II trailer tow package enables up to 3,500 pounds of towing capability. Trailer sway control will help by monitoring the motions of your vehicle to detect trailer sway. If needed, it can reduce engine speed and selectively apply brakes to help you maintain control of both the vehicle and the trailer. Looking good An available chrome appearance package includes elegant accents like chrome door handles, skull caps, roof rails, rear license plate appliqué, chrome trim on the front fascia grilles, and 19-inch wheels Versatile Escape provides up to 1,920 litres of cargo space with the rear seat folded. For a f lat load surface, fold the reclining 60/40 split rear seat down and place the adjustable cargo load floor in its highest position. The available handsfree liftgate allows fast

and easy access to the cargo area with a gentle kicking motion. Discreetly stow your go-to essentials in the front centre console. And keep others close at hand in the storage tray next to each front seat. Escape takes care of you and your front passenger with 10-way power, heated and leather trimmed seats, standard on Titanium. And every model comfortably supports with more hip room and more rear leg room than the previous generation. Treat yourself and your passengers to the deep, rich sound of 10 strategically-placed speakers. Escape respects nature by putting several materials often destined for landfills to practical use. Recycled plastic bottles go into its carpeting, which is a resilient blend of post-consumer and post-industrial polyester fibres. Scrap cotton from jeans, sweaters and t-shirts is turned into sound-absorption material that helps keep Escape quiet inside. Plus, the vehicle itself is approximately 85 per cent recyclable after it

has driven its last kilometre. Technologies you want The 2016 Ford Escape has several available technologies that add to its versatility. SYNC® with MyFord Touch® allows customers to manage information through voice commands, menus accessed via steering wheel controls, touch screens, buttons or knobs Active park assist can detect an available parallel parking space and automatically steer the vehicle into it. Drivers help by controlling the gas and brake pedals Blind Spot Information System with crosstraffic alert displays an alert in the side mirror when a vehicle is detected entering a blind spot. Cross-traffic alert warns if traffic is detected approaching from the sides You can see the 2016 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Nearly 700 families will be keeping warm this winter thanks to the Emergency Clothing Depot’s Coats for Camrose program held at Duggan Mall Oct. 21 and 22. “We had a great turnout,” said Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot coordinator Jaimie Griffiths. “We gave away 2,400 coats, snow pants, vests and sweaters, not to mention the countless mitts, scarves and touques.” The turnout was higher than in years past. “There was definitely a need with the economy being the way it is now,” said Griffiths. “We saw quite a diverse group of people.” Approximately 450 people received their winter wear in the first two hours on Oct. 21 after standing in a lineup that stretched all the way from the centre of the mall near the washrooms to the theatre. The lineup was at least 50 people deep at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, 45 minutes before the distribution began. Coats for Camrose was supported by the Camrose Kodiaks, which conducted a winter wear drive at its Oct. 16 and 17 home games, as well as many caring individuals who either donated their old used coats or went out and purchased new ones. “There was a gentleman who came in late on Thursday with a brand new coat, boots and mitts he had purchased from Walmart,” said Griffiths. “He told us that he didn’t have any kids at home anymore so he was able to make a donation. “We thought that was pretty sweet.” The generosity wasn’t lost on the families that were on the receiving end. “I remember a family of four that was there,” said Griffiths. “The mom was very happy to get winter clothes for her kids and was telling them to make sure that they expressed their gratitude. Murray Green, Camrose Booster Local children Faith, Chase and Brookelynn Carlson presented packed shoeboxes for less fortunate children around the world to Camrose Operation Christmas Child logistics coordinator Tammy Grose. Shoeboxes and brochures can be picked up at Century Meadows Baptist Church at 3720-66A Street. The boxes can be left at the church this week.

Camrose and District Support Services Home Support/ Meals on Wheels program director Maria Lobreau, left, and Doreen Pushak, right, accept placemats from Battle River Quilters’ Guild member Lesley Stoddart.

The Battle River Quilters’ Guild was extremely busy during the summer making placemats and quilts. In addition to enhancing the knowledge of quilting and preserving the art of quilting, the guild participates in community outreach. This summer, the guild presented 30 comfort quilts to the Camrose Women’s Shelter for use by its clients. At its monthly meeting on Oct. 21, the guild had as special guests the director and chair of the board of Home Support Services. During the meeting, guild members presented 72 placemats to the Meals on Wheels program. “It is an important aim of the guild to give back to the community,” said president Judy Hoehn. The members obviously feel the same way as they are working on quilted Christmas stockings

and lap quilts to be donated at Christmas. In addition to these projects, the guild is in the initial stage of preparation for its “Creative Reflections” quilt show, to be held next June at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre. Three special quilts will be raffled during the show. Profits from the sale of tickets on this project are to be divided equally between the guild and a local non-profit group. In the past, the guild has supported Camrose Open Door, the Camrose Association for Community Living and Quilts for Valour, as well as The Canadian Quilters’ Association. For anyone interested in quilting, new members are always welcome. The guild meets the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Camrose.

Winter On The Road Midget Vikings in fourth place By Murray Green In a battle for third place in the Northern Alberta Midget Hockey League rural division, the Lloydminster Blazers edged the Camrose Vikings 3-2 in a fast-paced and spirited contest in the Max McLean Arena on Nov. 7. After an evenly matched and scoreless first period, both teams combined for five goals before going back into a defensive mode in the third frame. In the first game of the season, Lloydminster beat the Vikings 7-1 and the local squad showed how much they have improved since then. Daine Milgate opened the scoring for the Vikings on a shorthanded marker in the middle period with help from Blaine Hironaka. The Blazers fought back with three counters prior to Camrose getting one back with less than three minutes left in the second. Colton Leslie notched the goal with assists from Brian Roth and Grant Lynes. Goalie Zach Wilms stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. Camrose fired 27 shots at the Lloydminster cage in the fairly even match. The Blazers slipped into third with 12 points, while Camrose is now three back in fourth spot. Camrose battled the Whitecourt Wolverines to a 3-3 draw on Oct. 31. Bryn Ziegeman collected two tallies, including the tying goal late in the third period. Leslie and Daine Milgate assisted on the tying goal. Keegan King and Reegyn Graham helped out on his other marker. Leslie and Hironaka combined again for the first goal for Camrose. Brendan Davis turned away 24 of the 27 shots that were directed his way. Camrose blasted the Whitecourt net with 43 shots, but goalie Connor Lee came up big to steal a point. The next home game for the midget double-A Vikings is on Saturday, Nov. 21, when the rival Wetaskiwin Ice Kings stop at the Max McLean Arena for a 2:45 p.m. start. The Northeast Panthers also play Camrose on Sunday, Nov. 29, at 3:15 p.m. in the Max McLean Arena.

Kodiaks tame Calgary Mustangs for the second straight game By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks ran their winning streak to four games with an 8-1 victory over the Calgary Mustangs on Nov. 10 in the EnCana Arena. Captain Cam Gotaas and Tanner Fleck garnered two goals each to pace the Camrose attack on offence. Gotaas opened the scoring and Calgary responded 1:19 later. However, Cole McBride gave the Kodiaks the lead for the rest of the contest two minutes later. It was all Kodiaks in the second as they scored four more goals. Between Fleck goals, Jake Dube and Angus Scott notched single tallies to give Camrose a 6-1 lead after 40 minutes. Ryan Hartman and Gotaas completed the scoring in the third frame. Goalie Patrick Gora made 27 saves on 28 shots. Camrose outshot the Mustangs 38-28. Defenceman T.J. Brown of the Kodiaks committed to Quinnipiac University Bobcats for 2017. He returned from a trip to the university in Hamden (near New Haven, Connecticut) to view the learning institution and the Bobcats hockey facility. Brown will be spending one more year with the Kodiaks. “The Kodiaks are very proud of this accomplish-

ment that T.J. has achieved,” said Kodiaks general manager and head coach Boris Rybalka. “He is not only a great hockey player, but more importantly a great person.” The Camrose player is happy about the future. “I am excited about my future and what lies ahead for me, but at the same time I am excited to finish my junior career and dominate before I move onto the NCAA,” he said. “I would like to thank the Kodiaks organization for everything they have done and also Quinnipiac for putting their trust and faith in me.” The Kodiaks also announced that Nelson Gadoury has committed to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville. “What I can say is: great job Nelson. He has persevered and kept a positive focus at the task at hand and UAH has got themselves an MVP type player. Nelson will tell you himself that he has had some ups and downs, but everything happens for a reason,” said Rybalka, who has helped two more players reach a higher level of hockey. Bear facts

The Kodiaks strive for team defence and unity, but two players are now in the top 10 in scoring. Nelson Gadoury is tied for second with 11 goals and 30 points

Nelson Gadoury battles for the puck along the boards in a recent Camrose Kodiaks game at the EnCana Arena. Gadoury will be attending and playing hockey at the University of Alabama in Huntsville next season. T.J. Brown also committed to Quinnipiac University, but not until the 2017 season.

in 21 games. McBride is 10th with 14 goals and 27 points in 21 games. Gora is second in goals against average (2.16), and save percentage (.921). For-

mer Kodiaks goalie Josh Williams is fifth with a 2.26 average for the Bonnyville Pontiacs. The Kodiaks are on the road before the next home

contest on Nov. 26 against the Okotoks Oilers. This will be the first meeting with the Oilers with former Kodiaks defenceman Drew Weich in the Okotoks line-up.

By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings were the first team to steal a point from the NAIT Ooks in hockey this season. Augustana led 4-1 after the opening period at the EnCana Arena on Nov. 5, but NAIT chipped away at the lead to force overtime. NAIT eventually won the game 5-4. The Vikings came out hard with Scott Swiston, Connor McLaughlin, Tanner Korchinski and Beau Taylor collecting single markers. NAIT goalie Ken Cameron was driven from the game after the first and Kyle Birch came in to stop all the shots he faced to give his team a chance to come back. NAIT scored two tallies in the second, one in the third and the winner in overtime to take the two points. Augustana goalie Curtis Skip was kept busy making 47 of 52 saves. The Vikings had 30 shots on goal. In the first meeting between the two clubs, NAIT won 4-1 in Edmonton on Nov. 4. The Vikings tied the game at 1-1 when Alex Rogers scored in the first frame. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE OPEN HOUSE? Following the first Open House on February 5, feedback from residents and businesses was reviewed and incorporated into updated versions of the MDP and LUB. The current Open House is your opportunity to review the draft documents and offer your thoughts on any additions or changes you feel should be considered before finalizing the documents.

HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ME? The vision, goals and regulations within the MDP and LUB dictate how you, and your neighbours, can use their land in the future. The regulations will address: the types and locations of land uses; the type and number of subdivisions allowed in an area; and the number and type of housing allowed on a parcel. These documents will help shape the community and how it will look in the future. If you are unable to attend the Open House, but would like to provide feedback please submit comments to the County Planning Department before December 1, 2015. Email: planning@county.camrose.ab.ca or mail to Camrose County, 3755-43 Avenue, Camrose, AB T4V 3S8 Draft MDP and LUB documents will be available for review online at www.county.camrose.ab.ca. We appreciate your input on these important documents and look forward to seeing you on November 25, 2015.

Companies pay their taxes based on profits. In challenging times, like these, when their revenue is down because of the downturn in world energy prices, they pay fewer taxes. So the layoffs are

not caused by taxes but international activities. However, it should be noted many companies are still showing dividend payments because they do not have so many expenses (workers’ wages); this resetting of employees is actually helping corporate bottom lines. Even with the recent tax reforms, companies and

individuals pay the lowest total taxes in Canada, with no sales tax. We are introducing three Private Members’ Bills this Fall. Estafania Cortes-Vargas has presented a Bill (202) that creates a committee to report to the Agriculture Minister on the state of local food production. It looks at ways to increase

the procurement of local food and promotes the purchases of local food across Alberta. Marie Renaud (St. Albert) will present Bill 205 whose purpose is to strengthen the Person with Developmental Disabilities Services Act by adding legislative provisions for reporting and public consultation.

I will be presenting Bill 207, the intent of which is to protect consumers from escalating, unfair electricity bills by doing a needs assessment of Alberta’s current transmission infrastructure and establish whether or not consumers are getting the best value for their public infrastructure investments.
