Last Friday evening, a magnificent spruce tree east of the Bill Fowler Center was the centerpiece amidst Christmas carols, lighting of candles, some tears and fellowship for the Annual Lights to Remember Ceremony. Coordinated by The Hospice Society of Camrose and District, the event is held to honour those we have loved and lost. If you have not yet had an opportunity to support this year’s campaign, donations can be made at Duggan Mall on Saturday, December 12 or 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Alternatively, go online to camrosehospice.org. If you desire a tax receipt, a minimum of $10 must be donated. Your support will help light up additional trees! The Society has wonderful plans going forward. The group of dedicated members are planning and fundraising for a hospice home to be developed right here in our community. Your generosity will definitely be valued and appreciated.

Friends and family rally to support McDevitts Submitted

Jeff McDevitt was many things – a business owner, volunteer, teammate, but most importantly a father. Since his passing on Oct. 25, friends and family have worked to establish and grow a “Jeffrey McDevitt Memorial Trust Fund to help his three young daughters going forward. Sara Walkey (a friend and teammate of Jeff’s) set up a GoFundMe account, while members of the ball team Jeff played for (Havoc) organized a memorial slo-pitch game. Between the GoFundMe account and the slo-pitch game approximately $10,000 has been raised. On Dec. 13, Jeff’s other family – the two hockey teams he played for, the Writeoff’s and the Ducks – will do what they can to help increase the funds in the trust account while paying tribute to the outstanding individual Jeff was. The two teams will face off at 6 p.m. on the EnCana ice surface at the Camrose Recreation

Grant Thornton LLP Chartered Accountants made a donation of $1,000 to the Jeffrey McDevitt Memorial Trust Fund last week. Accepting the cheque from Grant Thornton senior manager Michael Wetsch were, left to right, Sara Walkey, trustee for the fund, and Amanda, Payton, Shaylee and Alayna McDevitt.

Centre. The game will feature the retiring of Jeff’s jerseys, a ceremonial puck drop as well as a silent auction. We encourage all of

Jeff’s family and friends to come out to watch the game and bid on silent auction items. Anyone who is interested in making a contribu-

tion to the silent auction is asked to contact Michael Wetsch at Grant Thornton in Camrose at 780679-6430 or to drop items

off at the office located at #201 4870 51 Street. Contributions to the trust fund can be made at Scotiabank Camrose.

Merry Christmas Fund behind last year’s totals By Murray Green

It’s eight days before Merry Christmas Fund organizers and volunteers start packing hampers and the monies collected are down. “Last year at this time we had $9,000 collected and heading into December we have $6,400,” said public relations chair Dale Debnam. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund was launched in 1965 to supply food hampers to less fortunate families in the community. Although some things have changed through the years, the need to provide food support hasn’t. In 2014, the Merry Christmas Fund supplied 250 food hampers by raising $29,879. “Our goal this year is about the same. We are estimating the number of hampers to be around 250 and our target goal is to raise $29,879 to cover the cost of the food,” said public relations chair Dale Debnam. “We are hoping people will donate soon because we would like to pay for the food on Dec. 16 when it is delivered. We would like to know if we can pay for the groceries.” Donations can be made at the Royal Bank and at the Camrose Fire Department. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund is a registered charity, so people

will be mailed a tax receipt during the first two weeks in January. The Merry Christmas Fund also needs volunteers to make the program a success. “We always need help unpacking the food on Wednesday, as well as delivering the hampers,” said Debnam. The food hampers are intended to provide a good Christmas meal and food for an entire day. “If someone wants to have a hamper delivered to them or a family, they have to register at the Camrose Neighbor Aid Center,” said Debnam. The number at the centre is 780-679-3220. “The community has supported this project for many years and we are thankful for that,” said Debnam. “We are looking for the community to come through for us again to make Christmas a little brighter for everyone.” Volunteers also help deliver toys packaged by the Camrose Kinettes. “Some hampers will also have toys to deliver at the same address. The Kinettes sort and package the toys, the Lions Club picks them up and drops them off to us and we send them out with the food hampers,” explained Debnam. “If volunteers have a small vehicle we give them hampers without a lot of toys

THRIFT SHOP SUPPORTS MERRY CHRISTMAS FUND

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Merry Christmas Fund public relations chair Dale Debnam, left, accepts $1,500 from Camrose and Family Thrift Shop board member Gloria Wimmer. The Merry Christmas Fund is just over a third of the way of reaching its target.

and those who have a larger vehicle can take more.” For more information, or to volunteer with the Merry Christmas Fund, contact Larry Schultz at 780672-1493. If you need a donation picked up contact Debnam at 780-672-8777. The hampers are delivered to homes on Saturday, Dec. 19, in the morning. If people know they

are receiving a hamper, they are asked to be home to receive it to avoid sending it back. Undelivered hampers will have to be picked up at the food bank. “We need volunteer delivery people and we are asking for volunteers to be in pairs to carry the food. We also need people to volunteer for jobs that don’t involve delivering. It is best to call Larry so

we know who is coming to volunteer. We meet at the current Fire Hall starting at 9 a.m. to start delivering hampers,” said Debnam. She said it is a good outing for families who want to expose their children to the Christmas spirit and helping others. The food hampers are intended to provide a good Christmas meal and food for an entire day.

Apply for Canada Summer Jobs Battle River-Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is inviting local employers to apply for funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program 2016 to help create jobs for students next summer. “Every year, we try to focus on local priorities, while achieving tangible results for both students and their communities through this federal initiative,” says Sorenson. “It works in local economies throughout our large riding.” The Canada Summer Jobs initiative provides funding to not-for-profit, publicsector and small privatesector employers with 50 or fewer employees. It creates summer job opportunities for young people 15 to 30 years of age who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year. Employers can apply online at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/csj or print an application from the website. Applications are available at any Service Canada Centre. The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2016 will be from Jan. 4 to Feb. 26, 2016. “These full-time students who intend to return to their studies in the next school year can return home for the summer months – and have a summer job. This is important to families in our riding. Through Canada Summer Jobs, we are helping young Canadians get the skills and experience they need to get jobs now and in the future,” Sorenson concludes.

REFLECTIONS

OLMP students volunteer at Mustard Seed in Edmonton

by Bonnie Hutchinson What makes you laugh?

It’s “ho ho ho” season and that got me thinking about things that make me laugh. Naturally, somebody has researched laughter. According to Robert Provine, Ph.D., who wrote a book called Laughter, “One of the remarkable things about laughter is that it occurs unconsciously. You don’t decide to do it. While we can consciously inhibit it, we don’t consciously produce laughter. That’s why it’s very hard to laugh on command or to fake laughter.” I started remembering cards, one-liners and incidents that made me laugh. *** Front of a birthday card “The years have been kind…” Inside the card “…but gravity’s not doing you any favours!” *** Robert Provine says, “Laughter is social and contagious. We laugh at the sound of laughter itself. That’s why the Tickle Me Elmo doll was such a success – it makes us laugh and smile. The first laughter appears at about 3.5 to 4 months of age, long before we’re able to speak. Laughter, like crying, is a way for a preverbal infant to interact with the mother and other caregivers.” A while ago I went to a conference and heard many knowledgeable and interesting speakers. It was fascinating stuff. Two days later I realized the only thing I could remember about what I heard at the conference was the jokes; the things that made me laugh. *** Mother’s day card: “Mom, I’m sorry you had all the pain, the agony, the anguish…” Inside the card: “…but enough about my brother!” *** Robert Provine: “Contrary to folk wisdom, most laughter is not about humor; it is about relationships between people. Over a 10-year period, we studied over 2,000 cases of naturally occurring laughter. “We found that most laughter does not follow jokes. People laugh after a variety of statements such as “Here comes Mary,” “How did you do on the test?” and “Do you have a rubber band?” These aren’t jokes. “We don’t decide to laugh at these moments. Our brain makes the decision for us. These curious “ha ha ha’s” are bits of social glue that bond relationships.” *** Something my grandmother said about my father: “There must be music in him – because none ever came out.” *** Robert Provine: “No one has actually counted how much people of different ages laugh, but young children probably laugh the most. At ages 5 and 6, we tend to see the most exuberant laughs. Adults laugh less than children, probably because they play less. And laughter is associated with play.” *** Front of a birthday card: “One good thing about getting old… Inside the card “…Nobody wants to borrow your clothes.” *** Robert Provine again: “When we laugh, we alter our facial expressions and make sounds. During exuberant laughter, the muscles of the arms, legs and trunk are involved. Laughter also requires modification in our pattern of breathing.” *** My dad was a stickler for safety. At work he was insistent about safety goggles and proper procedures for using machinery. At home when he mowed the lawn, no matter how hot it might be, he put on coveralls and work boots and wore leather gauntlets. Once when he and Mom were in their seventies, he got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. On the way back to bed he stubbed his toe. It really hurt and he made some noise. A voice from Mom’s side of the bed said, “You mean you weren’t wearing your steel toed boots?” They both started to laugh, and then they got the giggles. When one would begin to stop laughing, the other would start again. As Dad said, “Two old coots in the middle of the night, laughing their heads off in the dark.” *** Actually, who cares why we laugh? We do and it’s fun. The phrase, “I could die laughing” might not be a bad way to go! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

Submitted Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School students from back to front Jemma Lauder, Kaleigh Taschuk and Kendra Bell prepared a snack during their visit to the Mustard Seed in Edmonton. By Sarah McConnery, OLMP School

On Friday, Nov. 27, 15 students from the Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School leadership group hopped on a bus and traveled to Edmonton with intentions of volunteering with the Mustard Seed organization. The Mustard Seed is a not for profit organization targeting those who are struggling with poverty and homelessness, and those who are unable to fulfill their basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter and other support services. The Mustard Seed helps to provide these assets. Homelessness is a crucial issue in our community that needs to be fixed. The most recent homeless count in Edmonton was 2,500 people, but due to the consistent circumstantial methods that are used to find this number, it is suggested that the statistics are much higher. In the morning, the OLMP group sorted through the enormous amount of donations brought to the warehouse from the Camrose community, including St. Francis Xavier Church and the school. We then broke for lunch before

we went on a guided walk throughout the inner city suburbs of Edmonton. We paused at sites of significance and came away with a deeper knowledge and understanding regarding the seriousness of the situation at hand and questions that had been raised. This walk was the highlight of my trip. I had been taught the information in theory, but being exposed to it was a different experience. We then cooked a meal for 200 people, and in-between cooking, serving and cleaning, we sat in the commons area, playing card games and hearing some inspirational stories from people living on the streets. In a school environment, we are hidden from these issues. A general stereotype our generation has about the homeless is that these people are ‘bad’ and ‘lazy.’ We have learned that this is not the case at all. I spoke to a man who worked on the oil rigs, had gone to college and was successful. But then a significant event took place and he turned to alcoholism to deal with this, eventually losing his job and ultimately his house. This shows how we are all susceptible to homelessness and it could

happen to anyone; this is not usually a preferred choice. In 2008, Canada experienced an economic boom, resulting in the increase of jobs available and the demand for jobs grew. This brought people from all over the world to Canada, which ultimately decreased the chances of getting a job and increased the unemployment rate. This economic boom drove more people to homelessness. A major issue in the Edmonton area is the lack of affordable housing for people in need. Not only is it difficult to get the funds to build affordable housing, but it is also difficult to get communities supporting these developments. This is of growing concern as we begin to welcome refugees from Syria into our communities, ultimately increasing the aggregate homelessness. The OLMP leadership group is thankful to everyone who donated, whether it was through the clothing drive or the wake-a-thon fundraiser, which enabled us to have this opportunity and learn about the issues in our community so our generation can help to make a change.

Introducing Jeff and Gary

Canadian Tire managers driven by customer service The warm memories of what it’s like to live in a smaller town came flooding back to Jeff Bonnor as he and his wife were given a driving tour of Camrose by Canadian Tire dealer Dave Jewell. Jeff was then the store manager at the Canadian Tire in Windermere and they were considering a move to Camrose to fill the position of general manager left by Todd Cochrane’s move to Ontario. Taking the drive around town with Dave convinced the young couple, who have a newborn son, that Camrose is the right place for them. Camrose’s wealth of sports and culture facilities and programs made it clear that this is a great place to raise a family, become involved in the community and build a life together. Jeff’s management style also reflects the sense of community he so much appreciated growing up in a small town in Saskatchewan. He worked his way through the ranks of several Canadian Tire stores, most recently in Edmonton, but always hoped Jeff Bonnor he would land in a town just like Camrose. He General Manager endeavors to create a sense of community with his staff, too, knowing that success comes by working as a team, being collaborators, having each other’s back, just like members of a tight-knit community who help neighbors and look out for each other. This sense of teamwork translates into better customer service, which is the focus of all Dave’s staff here in his Camrose store.

Kiwanis taking applications for Top Cop award

Get the

By Dan Jensen

The Kiwanis Club of Camrose and District is accepting nominations for its 2016 Top Cop award. The award recognizes an active duty member of the Camrose Police Service whose volunteer efforts make a substantial impact on the community. Nominations should list details of the officer’s volunteerism and community service, outline his or her roles and responsibilities with those organizations, state the number of months or years the officer has been involved with each endeavour, and provide other relevant information that would make him/her a deserving recipient. Nominations should also include letters of recommendation or support for the organizations with which the officer is involved. The selection committee will consider volunteerism beyond sporting functions and youth sports teams, although coaching may be one aspect of volunteer service. The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club presented its first Top Cop Award in the spring of 2014 to Rick Marcinkowski for his dedication to Camrose Minor Sports as a coach and a mentor, his service as chair of the board of the Camrose Mixed Slow Pitch Association and his support of a DARE program fundraiser. The 2015 award was presented to Const. Matthew Wilton for his work with Camrose Special Olympics, Charity Check Stop, Camrose Neighbor Aid Center’s food bank and the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Nomination papers for the Top Cop may be obtained from the UPS Store in Camrose at 6010-48 Avenue, or by calling either Wes at 780672-8199 or Ivan Nesdoly at 780-781-4400. Forms may also be requested by sending an email to inesdoly@gmail. com. The deadline for submitting a nomination is Dec. 23.

Hospice Society launches Lights to Remember Campaign By Dan Jensen The Hospice Society of Camrose and District launched its annual Lights to Remember Campaign at a Christmas tree bulb lighting ceremony immediately east of Bill Fowler Centre on 48 Avenue Dec. 4. The campaign has received very good response since it was started three years ago. “People are finding it a great way to remember that special loved one who has passed on,” said Hospice Society of Camrose and District board member Pam Cummer. The campaign is accepting donations for the Christmas tree bulbs at Duggan Mall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 12 and 19. Donations may also be made online at camrosehospice.org. “We are happy to accept whatever donation people are willing to make,” said Cummer. “What we have said is that we will give out a tax receipt for any donation of $10 or more.” The purchase of a bulb will provide an opportunity to write a message to their loved one in a journal on display at the mall. The Hospice Society of Camrose and District raised $2,500 in the 2014 Lights to Remember Campaign. The money collected this year will be put towards the new Hospice Home and the training of palliative care volunteers who work at The Bethany Group and St. Mary’s Hospital. Canadian Tire in Camrose donated all the Christmas lights which were placed on the tree by D-2 Electric using a bucket truck. Windwood Group made a couple of eye-catching signs, while Tim Hortons and The Real Canadian Superstore provided the coffee and goodies for the light up. The mission of the Hospice Society of Camrose and District is to enable the community to support those facing advancing illness, death and bereavement with dignity through education and compassionate care. Donations throughout the year are graciously accepted on the society’s website, www. camrosehospice.org.

Bailey honoured by Band Directors’ Association By Dan Jensen

Charlie Killam School music teacher Bob Bailey felt humbled when the Alberta chapter of the Canadian Band Directors’ Association presented him with the Director of the Year award at the annual Alberta Music Conference in Red Deer Oct. 23. “It is a tremendous honour to even be considered in that group of music teachers (who previously received the award),” said Bob. The Director of the Year award has been presented to 31 music teachers since 1974, including Camrose Composite High School music director Tom Spila, who received the award in 2010. “I know all of the names that are on (the award) and some were my mentors,” said Bob. “The voting is conducted by past recipients.” Bob has taught band for 33 years at all levels, including high school, junior high and elementary, the last 27 of which have been in Camrose. His bands have consistently earned “superior” awards at the Alberta Band Association’s Provincial Festival of Bands. “I have been fortunate enough to teach kids who like music and want to pursue music,” said Bob. “I have also been fortunate to have received great support from the Charlie Killam administration over the years.” Band instruction is compulsory for Battle River School Division students in the elementary grades. “They (students) all get to try it in Grade 5 or 6, depending on the school,”

said Bob. “When they get to Grade 7 it is their choice as to whether they want to continue. We have been lucky to retain a lot of the kids through the junior high program.” In addition to concert band, Bob teaches choral, jazz and chamber ensembles. He has acted as guest conductor/clinician at Sifton’s Summerfest, the Grande Prairie Regional College Summer Band Camp, Adventures in Summer Music in Red Deer and MusicCamp Alberta, and is in demand as an adjudicator in music festivals throughout Alberta. In 2005 he was honoured by an invita-

tion from the Alberta Band Association to conduct the Southern Alberta Junior High Honour Band, and in 2009 he was co-recipient of the inaugural University of Alberta (Augustana) Fine Arts Achievement Award for contributions to the fine arts. Bob’s bands have had the opportunity to perform in some unique events over the years, including a concert with the Royal Canadian Artillery and the high school band at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, and a concert at the Bailey Theatre the year before. “We have an active pro-

gram as far as performing around town and doing festivals and concerts,” he said. “Every grade has a field trip or a concert tour.” Bob has had the opportunity to teach all three of his children: Brittany, who is an actor and singer; Halley, who has obtained a masters degree in vocal performance; and PJ, who at the time of his death in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 19, had just finished his first year in trumpet studies at Grant MacEwan University. A special concert entitled The Melody Lingers On featured many of Bob’s former students and colleagues and was able to

raise a substantial amount for a Battle River Community Foundation endowment fund in PJ’s memory. “That would definitely be one of the highlights of my career,” said Bob. “The interest that is generated by that endowment fund is used to support deserving band programs and students.” Bob is a member of the Alberta Choral Federation, the International Bandmasters’ fraternity Phi Beta Mu, and the Alberta Band Association. He plays trumpet for various ensembles, including Camrose and District Community Band, Battle River Big Band and the Simply Brass Quartet. He has also served on the executive of the Camrose and District Music Festival Association and the Camrose and District Community Band. Bob estimates he has taught more than 4,000 students, either in Camrose, Rocky Mountain House or Manning. “I enjoy where I am,” he said. “Every year I get a new crop of students who go from, in some cases, being a complete beginner, to being able to perform in concerts, music festivals and concert tours. I have been able to watch them improve and change and grow.” Bob credits much of the success he has enjoyed to his wife, Valerie. “None of the trips, rehearsals and concerts would have been possible without her support,” he said.

Library pitches free memberships to Camrose County By Dan Jensen

Camrose Public Library pitched the idea of free memberships for rural residents to Camrose County council in a budget presentation. CPL director Deb Cryderman told council that free memberships would mean that everyone would be able to access the library’s resources regardless of their income, either from home or in person. “Libraries are the only publicly funded institutions where all citizens can continue to educate themselves their entire life, regardless of their income or location, at very little cost,” said Cryderman. “Camrose Public Library is where we connect with community and the people in it, where we learn more about our municipality, province, country and world. No other place promotes educational accessibility,

encourages social gatherings to build personal and professional skill sets, and serves all community members without discrimination.” The library raised the membership fees for County residents from $12 to $25 earlier this year but later restored the fees to their former rates. “We sent cheques for $13 to people,” said Cryderman. “Seventy per cent of the people cashed them while 30 per cent of the people returned them as a donation to the library.” CPL has welcomed more than 80,000 visitors so far this year, a number that it expects will grow to 100,000 by year end. More than 17,000 people have participated in programming while more than 35,243 people have accessed the library’s Wi-Fi. The number of one hour computer sessions booked to the end of September was 14,411.

The library has been able to supplement its physical collection with eResources, a collection that is being built with the support of individual libraries throughout the Parkland regional system. “Like other libraries we are responding to patron needs and going beyond books, movies, music, audiobooks, magazines, language learning materials, newspapers and more,” said Cryderman. The library’s adult services programmer, supported by a number of community professionals, including police officers, lawyers, funeral directors and optometrists, have presented programs to more than 2,500 participants on topics ranging from funeral planning, fraud prevention, drug awareness and home security. “Adult programming is a great way for like-minded community members to meet one another and

explore topics of mutual interest,” said Cryderman. “Libraries are often the hub of a community, where a sense of belonging is born. Libraries are one of the first places newcomers come as they are settling in and learning about their community.” Cryderman said it is not unusual for more than 30 people to attend the library’s early literacy programs. “By the end of September 3,062 children had taken part in library early literacy programming. Parents and caregivers realize the advantage of introducing literacy skills while children’s brains are developing. Library story times have shown to improve school readiness, vocabulary, development, motivation to read, narrative awareness, phonological awareness and print awareness.” Cryderman said that libraries are a key component of any community’s infrastructure, and a ser-

vice that delivers opportunities for citizens to grow, to experience new things, to engage with their neighbours, and to belong. “They are as important to a community as to any other service, including hospitals, schools, emergency services and other recreational facilities such as arenas. Libraries deliver high quality public education for all through a curriculum that is comprised of self directed information seeking, support for individuals conducting research into any number of issues, as well as the provision of instructive, enlightening and inspiring experiences through our expanding library programs.” The cost of providing free memberships to 500 County residents at the current membership rate of $12 would be $6,000. Camrose County’s contribution to the library’s 2015 budget was $100,542.

Don’t make it easy for someone wanting to commit a crime by leaving doors to houses, shops, shed, barns, vehicles unlocked. Locking doors may seem unneighbourly, however it is one way to deter crime. As the saying goes, “Lock it, or possibly lose it.” Crime Watch also reminds citizens to be wary of telephone scams. There’s a lot to take into consideration when creating a school calendar. Everything from whether Labour Day is early or late, the day of the week upon which Christmas falls and exam dates set by Alberta Education influence how it comes together. In addition, it’s important to have a balanced number of days in each semester, provide professional development time and stay within the provincial targets for days students and staff should be in school. Battle River School Division has created four options of school calendar for the 2016-17 school year. All four calendars meet the criteria for what is to be provided, but each one does have a different combination of dates for school

Ben’s heart’s desire is to see lives changed by the power of God. This is very evident in the music and message he brings. Come and be blessed – everyone welcome!

Shred Kelly is not just your average folk band. The group has emerged as a leader in folk rock that is expanding the fan base across the country. The Rose City Roots Music Society is presenting Shred Kelly in its series at the Bailey Theatre on Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. Shred Kelly consists of Tim Newton, Sage McBride, Jordan Vlasschaert, Ian Page-Shiner and Ty West who have pioneered Canada’s modern folk sound and pushing the boundaries of the genre. Shred Kelly released its third album Sing To The Night last January which featured new material showing growth and depth of the band. They still share banjo riffs, rock sounds and sweet vocal harmonies. Producer John Critchley helped create an album that pushed their creativity and gave Shred Kelly a new take on their signature sound, which translates perfectly onto an album, or a packed dance floor. Tickets are available at the Bailey Box Office.

Ennis Sisters share East Coast Christmas By Murray Green

Newfoundland’s Ennis Sisters will be sharing their sixth annual holiday tour with local music fans to get them in the Christmas spirit. The three sisters will be performing on the Bailey Theatre stage for the first time on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 8 p.m. “The first five years we did all of our shows in Newfoundland. We have been getting requests from other parts of the country asking for the Christmas show, so we decided to take it off the island this year,” said Teresa Ennis. “It’s exciting, especially for me because I took a break from the group to have a child. It is exciting be able to take our tour off the island, spread our music to other parts of the country and see new faces.” The Ennis Sisters – Maureen, Teresa and Karen – are known for their signature holiday hit “I’ll Be There Christmas Eve,” from their 1998 release, Christmas On Ennis Road, and their tribute to the great Dermot O’Reilly “A Children’s Winter,” from their album, It’s Christmas, released in 2012. “We love singing Christmas songs. It was a big part of us growing up, even just around the house. It is going to be a really fun show with step-dancing, our original Christmas tunes, as well as some classics. It is a really good family show.” Continued on page 18

There is something for everyone,” added Teresa. The sisters grew up singing in church and have since turned it into a 20-year career with several albums. “The three of us are a harmony focused group. We will have a percussionist and a multi-instrumentist member with us and some of us play Celtic instruments,” said Teresa. Winners of a Juno award, SOCAN award, multiple East Coast Music awards and Music Newfoundland and Labrador awards, the Ennis Sisters are world-renowned performers. Their inspirational harmonies, humorous recitations, Irish step dancing and engaging stage rapport lift spirits and warm hearts. An East Coast Family Christmas with The Ennis Sisters offers timeless tradition, and features carols and holiday tunes of past and present. “We love performing Christmas songs and we have two Christmas albums out. People are going to hear some different songs with that east coast Celtic flair. We also tell a lot of stories from our time growing up as sisters and what Christmas means to us,” explained Teresa. The Ennis Sisters’ multi-generational interpretations of seasonal classics have sold out shows across Newfoundland year after year. “It’s going to be exciting to play at the Bailey. I’ve never been there, but I hear it is over 100 years old and it’s exciting to play in these different venues. You get such a rush playing in these older venues. I’m looking forward to it,” said Teresa. The group will only be singing in Medicine Hat, Athabasca, Fort McMurray and Camrose in Alberta this December.

Fill the air with warm wishes People spend a good amount of time and money selecting gifts for their loved ones, taking special care to suit the needs of the individual. The same amount of care should be given when thanking those who have been so gracious. Any form of thanks is always appreciated, but making someone feel as though they have made it a smart and meaningful purchase is a gift in itself. Instead of hastily choosing a package of thank you cards, pick a card for each individual, having your thank you come truly from the heart. Have pictures taken of each of you unwrapping your gifts. In the thank you card, enclose a photograph of the person’s gift being opened, worn or displayed. How about a personal thank you for those who live in your area? Taking time to thank someone in person and expressing how much you are enjoying the gift will make that person feel that his or her gift to you really meant something special. If time allows, a get-together for everyone to whom you want to say thank you is a unique and fun way of showing your gratitude.

Last minute Christmas gift ideas Camrose stores have everything you need not only to trim your tree and your house, but also to stuff stockings with those last minute gift items. Start with the basics – a tree and not just any tree. Choose from a wide variety of artificial Christmas trees like a Blue Spruce, White or Canadian Pine. Artificial trees are environmentally friendly and don’t lose their needles. Like the smell of a real tree? A Christmas tree scent is just like the real thing.

Consider a kitchen gadget for a last minute stocking stuffer? Specialty items like ice cream scoops and kitchen timers make great gifts for anyone on your list who spends time in the kitchen. Other stocking stuffers can include items like small bottles of gas line antifreeze, lock de-icer and ice melters. Don’t forget the furry and feathered creatures during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Let Fido know you haven’t forgotten

him with a toy Christmas stocking. Sprinkle some birdseed in your yard in front of a window for the little ones that brave the cold weather months. People often travel to see relatives and loved-ones during Christmas. Booster cables and first aid kits make great gifts for anyone who spends time in their car during the cold winter months. Give the gift of peace of mind during cold winter travelling – a cellular phone.

Winter Warm-up Oxtail Soup Ingredients: 1 Oxtail, approx. 1.5 Kg

Thyme, a few fresh sprigs

3 Tbsp. Olive oil

Rosemary, one fresh sprig

2 Large Carrots, diced small 1 tsp. Black peppercorns 2 tsp. Tomato paste 1 small Rutabaga, diced small 300 ml Red wine 4 Celery stalks, Diced medium 1 Large yellow onion, diced medium 4 Tbsp All-purpose flour 1 Bay Leaf

1.5 L Beef stock, good quality 4 Tbsp. Butter, softened Italian Flat-leaf parsley Kosher salt and cracked black pepper, to taste

In shallow pan, mix 2 Tbsp. of the flour with Kosher salt and cracked black pepper. Heat half the olive oil in a thick bottomed pan or cast iron skillet. Dust oxtail in the flour mixture, shaking off excess flour. Fry until golden brown on all sides. Remove oxtail and place on plate to cool. Add remaining oil, herbs, 1/2 of the chopped vegetables, and peppercorns to the pan. Sauté for 4 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften. Stir in tomato paste and remaining flour. Stir frequently for another 4 minutes. Pour in red wine and scrape pan to dislodge any sediment. Boil for one minute. Return oxtail to the pan, add stock and bring to a simmer. Partially cover pan and cook on a slow simmer for 3 hours. At this time the meat should come off the bone easily. Remove oxtail and place on plate to cool. Remove the meat by using a fork and pulling it away from the bone and shredding it with your fingers. In pot, sauté the remaining vegetables in 2 Tbsp. of butter, sauté until softened. Using a fine sieve, strain the oxtail liquid into the pot using a wooden spoon to force the vegetables and extract as much of the liquid as possible. Bring to a slow simmer until vegetables are soft. Skim any oil and sediments from the top of the pot. To thicken the stock, use the remaining 2 Tbsp. of flour mixed with the butter. Whisk into simmered stock in small increments. Simmer well for 5 minutes. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Add the shredded meat into the pot, warm thoroughly. Garnish with fresh chopped flat-leaf parsley.

Simple tips for having a successful Christmas gift exchange Ensure participation in gift exchanges is fun and friendly for all involved by following these simple tips. Do set a gift amount limit. Gift exchanges are more about having fun and exchanging a little something with friends and family members than walking away with amazing prizes. Establish a spending limit

so everyone receives a gift of roughly the same value. Don’t exceed the spending limit. It can be tempting to spend more to make your gift appear more impressive. But overspending defeats the purpose of the exchange. The presents typically are anonymous, so being overly generous will not win you any style points. Do make it a game.

Try passing wrapped gifts around in a circle to a holiday song. When the music stops, the gift you are holding is the one you open. Experiment with your own variations to make gift exchanges more fun. Don’t let anyone see the gift you bring. The idea is to keep things as secretive as possible so as not to sway the selection of presents. Do ensure your gift is

unisex. Unless you know specifically that only men or women will be opening the presents, select items that will appeal to both genders. Don’t forget to consider ages as well. Gift exchanges may include both children and adults, so include gifts that appeal to all ages when necessary. When the exchange has ended, allow participants to swap gifts if they want to.

Do expect some gifts to be the gag variety. Such gifts are entertaining and may make up the majority of the gifts. Keep your sense of humor and you’re likely to enjoy grab bags a lot more. Don’t re-gift items. Should the person who gave you the gift participate in the exchange, he or she can trace that gift back to you and may be offended.

City of Camrose earns Choosewell Healthy Communities Award By Dan Jensen The City of Camrose received a Communities Choosewell Healthy Communities Award in the Building Community Capacity category during the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association conference and Energize workshop at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Oct. 22 to 24. The award recognizes the City for the work it has done with the Camrose Wellness Coalition to promote physical activity through the installation of bike racks and an outdoor gym, as well as to improve the eating environments at recreation facilities. The installation of the bike racks followed a Camrose Wellness Coalition survey on active transportation. “The survey results were very clear,” said Camrose Wellness Coalition member and Alberta Health Services community health promoter Lucy Ernst in a presentation at a Nov. 2 Committee of the Whole Council meeting. “More people would bike more often if there were more bike racks. Our coalition came together and we partnered with the City of Camrose and purchased and installed four additional bike racks in our community.” The Outdoor Gym,

Lucy Ernst, left, Erin Branton, right, and Pamela Boyson presented the Choosewell Healthy Communities Award to Mayor Norm Mayer.

which opened in September, was created with funding Camrose PCN was able to obtain from Alberta Blue Cross. “It has become a popular destination for seniors, adults and even our school partners,” said Ernst. The incentive to promote healthy eating at recreation facilities emerged after the Camrose Wellness Coalition viewed statistics that showed 30 per cent of Alberta children are overweight and don’t eat the recommended amount of vegetables fruit, grain or milk products. “The one that is alarming the most to me is that youth who play sports consume more calories both from fast foods and sugar sweetened beverages than those who don’t partici-

pate,” said Camrose Wellness Coalition member Pamela Boyson, a registered dietitian with Alberta Health Services. “I think some of that is the environment. They are often eating in a car or eating at the rec centre; maybe some of these environments that don’t support healthy foods.” The City of Camrose has installed healthy vending machines at all community services facilities and will be stipulating in its new contracts that concession operators must meet healthy food standards. A Camrose Wellness Coalition survey that was done with Camrose Minor Sports Association families showed that 57 per cent of the 247 respondents are at the recreation centre two to four days a week and

another 17 per cent are there five days a week. The survey also showed that 78 per cent feel healthy eating is important and that 86 per cent feel 50 to 100 per cent of the foods at the concessions should be healthy. Sixty per cent of the respondents said they would purchase more food at the concession more often if healthier food was available, while 37 per cent said their purchasing habits would remain the same. “That really supports this work in saying that people, especially those who were there (at the recreation centre) during the week would really like to see change happening,” said Boyson. The Camrose Wellness Coalition was able to part-

ner with the soccer association at the Night Classic tournament this past summer to offer a healthy food concession. “We heard nothing but positive things and it was profitable,” said Boyson. “Even after the grant we made $1,000 in profit after paying the rentals of fees. Some of our learnings were that we didn’t get things out to the coaches and the teams ahead of time so a lot of people didn’t know it was going to happen.” The Camrose Wellness Coalition believes it is important to educate people on why it is trying to bring about changes to exercise and eating habits. “I have been offering clinics that educate coaches on sport nutrition and hydration,” said Boyson. “One of the things we are doing through these clinics is asking them to help support this (healthy eating) environment and help us make this a profitable venture for the operators within the facilities, but also make sure that we have healthy food options available. I know lots of coaches who are saying they take their teams away because our current environment doesn’t support the food they want their athletes to have. We really want to work towards an environment where the healthy choice is the easy choice.”

United Church celebrates 90th anniversary in Camrose By Murray Green

Alberta United Church president Paul Walfall encourages members to take the challenge of facing the future and be strong, despite declining numbers. He was in Camrose for the 90th anniversary of the local congregation where members 90 or older where honoured as well. Paul is the first Canadian president born in Jamaica. “I served in Barbados for 15 years before I decided to come to Canada. It was time for a change, and my mother and grandmother were in Canada,” said Paul, who has 25 years of experience as a minister. “I wanted to have a different perspective and experience in ministry.” He received a call from Cold Lake to serve in Alberta and he accepted the request. “Working in Cold Lake also meant serving in a small Saskatchewan church, so I liked the challenge of working in two provinces and two time zones,” Paul chuckled. “The challenge attracted me in the first place.” He was ordained as a Methodist minister, which falls under the United Church banner in Canada. He was transferred into the United Church in 2012.

Thirty-one associates of Camrose United Church who were 90 or older were recognized by the church on the celebration of its 90th birthday on Nov. 15. Those in attendance from left to right were Bob Woods, Ruth Ramsey, Elsie Snider, Jean MacLellan, Ruth Fleming, Alice McFadyen and Verna Drimmie.

Three years later he was named the president of Northwest Conference. “The annual conference was held in May and word was sent out that they were looking for a new president because Lee Sinclair was retiring from the position,” said Paul. “I wanted to nominate someone and when I asked him he said he nearly caused an accident on the road. He then said why I don’t I nominate you. I thought okay, they will never vote for a black person who isn’t born in Canada to be the president. I told my wife that I would run to prove a point. Not in my wildest dreams did I think I would be appointed.”

After four ballots, Paul was indeed the last man standing in the election. “I was surprised that I was elected. I am still in shock. I am still learning through my experience. My role model comes from back home when I was learning to be a leader. I consider myself a leader on most days,” he laughed. “I think I’m the kind of leader who climbs the tallest coconut tree and looks out to see which direction we should go.” He inspires hope for those who believe they can make a difference. “The president of the Conference is the spiritual leader of the conference and includes visiting each Pres-

bytery during his/her term and working with the executive secretary for the good of the Conference,” said Paul. “For me personally, the role is that of leading and encouraging the church in the Conference to be missional and supporting where possible. Camrose is my first place to visit, so it is exciting for me to be here.” The United Church is going through some changes. “I want to share the vision that I have and take the path towards the future. You are always in a process of change. In the United Church we must stand up and say this is what I believe and why I believe it,” explained Paul. “We are

called on social issues. We have to look at the reasons we are contracting and not just accept it. Congregations have closed. We need to join hands and support each other and face the challenges.” He was honoured to speak at the 90th anniversary. “It is a time to reflect and a time to reclaim anything that was lost along the way. The celebration is a time to focus on what is important to the church,” added Paul. “I was In Canada to celebrate my grandmother’s 100th birthday. We reflected on how the world has changed in 100 years. Just like the world around Camrose has changed in 90 years. Camrose United still has a message and a job to do. The celebration is not a time to sit back and retire, but rather to re-energize and look forward to the next 90 years.” Both United Church Canada and Camrose are celebrating 90 years. “It isn’t a coincidence,” said Paul. “It is a time for both to take on the next challenge.” Paul said Camrose has a message of hope to share with others. “God is still art work in this community. We have to be recommitted to doing that job.”

Sorenson supports Bill 6 public hearing Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

Our riding of Battle River-Crowfoot is a largely rural riding and agriculture is one of our major industries. There are many businesses that support the farmers and ranchers in our region. In the past week, I have heard from many local families concerning the provincial NDP government’s Bill 6, the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act. As your elected federal government representative, I have always tried to respect the federal, provincial, regional and municipal boundaries that are part of our large federal riding. Rarely have I spoken up on issues that are beyond my jurisdiction – but I have – and I am responding to the many constituents that have emailed, visited and called me concerning Bill 6. I support calls for a thorough public hearing and examination of Bill 6. As farmers and ranchers, we have a personal interest in maintaining safety on our farms and ranches – to protect ourselves, our loved ones, neighbours, our livestock, and more. Farmers and ranchers know how dangerous our livelihoods can be sometimes and we know the measures we ought to be taking on a day to day basis to try and prevent an accident or injury. We work too hard, day-in and day-out, to risk our prosperity by engaging in reckless or shoddy work. We know the consequences. We share best practices. We are generous with each other when it comes to reducing risk and danger. Often, our suppliers of machinery and other products make great efforts to ensure we can get the job done – safely. Around our region, we are proud of our record. We are always willing to consider improvements. We will talk to anyone, anytime about making our operations more safe and secure. For us, it should not be about increased government red tape, extra fees, fines, regulations, etc. Over the course of my years working on legislation and making policy decisions at the federal level, I have seen my share of bureaucrats reverse or modify their positions when confronted with the facts and figures from Canadians working in any given field. From my experience as chair of a number of Parliamentary committees, I have presided over testimony coaxed from witnesses – stakeholders – who have real expert experience. They can change the tone of hearings and sometimes bring a committee to unanticipated consensus. There are many of us living our lives on our small family farms. We are not ‘incorporated’. We don’t answer to ‘headquarters,’ and we personally know everyone we work with daily – even if some of them are only here to help us out on a seasonal basis. Many of these workers return to us year after year. Common practices include neighbours helping neighbours. We care about each other and work toward the highest standards of our profession. As a legislator, I encourage the NDP government to take the time necessary to be sure that the stakeholders are consulted and their voices are heard and understood. The agriculture industry is not without its dangers, but the statistics indicate that it is hardly comparable to the construction industry, manufacturing, mining, forestry and others. When it comes to our agriculture industry, we need to examine, understand and respect the difference between smaller farming operations and large industrial ones. “Assuring absolute integrity”

Church of God hosting free dinner By Lori Larsen The Camrose Church of God will be hosting its third annual free Community Christmas dinner in the downstairs dining area of the Church of God on Dec. 19. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and dinner will be served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. “The whole theme of the evening is community supporting community. This is not just a meal for individuals who are having a tough time financially it is also for anybody who is lonely, who wants to spend an evening with friends, or who is maybe feeling like they just want an evening out of music and a good meal. It is going to be in a warm environment and served by people who care. It really is going to be a great family atmosphere and we are really excited about putting it on for the community,” expressed Steve Mitts, main event coordinator. “It is a community dinner put on by the community. The Church of God is just a place where it has been held, where it started.” Since its beginning in 2013 the event has grown in size and popularity. The first year the volunteers served about 75 people. Last year that number doubled in size, serving over 150 satisfied

diners. This year the event coordinators are anticipating doubling last year’s numbers with close to 300 guests. The Church of God is taking dinner invitations to Camrose Open Door, Camrose Women’s Shelter, the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, Camrose Neighbor Aid Center, Martha’s Table and other churches. Details of the dinner will be displayed on the new church sign visible from the highway for anyone passing by. As well, flyers will be distributed this year to various businesses willing to get the word out. Guests will be entertained throughout the evening as opposed to a concert held after the dinner. There will be five groups rotating upstairs and downstairs, performing for guests either while they are dining on their meal or while waiting to be seated. “People can go upstairs and listen to the music and then come back downstairs 20 minutes later and see if there is an opening,” said Mitts. Putting together an event such as this could not be accomplished without the goodwill and participation of the community. “We are getting a lot of feedback from the community. Businesses are contacting us to ask what they can

do and how they can help, whether it be with money or actual donations of food items,” said Mitts. “We are getting a lot of businesses like restaurants that are donating turkeys, gravy, salads. This is what they do so it is going to be well done. Granted we are going to be cooking a lot of the turkeys ourselves. We are not depending on them to cook 12 to 14 turkeys. “Some businesses have actually said they are going to volunteer some of their time.” Individual community members can also bring in donations of food items or donations of money that would be put towards the purchase of various items used for the event. Members of the community can also volunteer their time for putting on the event. Last year there were 75 volunteers and, considering the number of guests expected this year, more volunteers will be needed. “A lot of people who have volunteered their time from the community in the last two years are coming forward again,” said Mitts. Anyone willing and able to volunteer with the community Christmas dinner or wishes to make a donation is encouraged to contact either Steve at 780-781-5019 or Theo Stad at 780-231-8982.

Jason Angel Spicer October 11, 1970 November 12, 2015 Jason Spicer passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Millet, Alberta. Jason will be regretfully missed by his mother, Alice; buddy, Joel; brothers; extended family and many acquaintances that he encountered over his 45 years of life. Jason had a free spirit and always lived life to the fullest; his brothers can attest to his numerous escapades. He loved his fat cat, Jupee; ferret, Lupee; his beautiful Corvette and his loving mother, Alice. Jason would often tell Alice of the many plans he and Joel were always making; how much it meant to him that Joel would take time from his own wife and children to visit Jason. Cremation has taken place. Jason’s ashes now rest in the exclusive, handcrafted, wooden urn designed and completed by his Uncle Mike and Auntie Rose. A Celebration of Life will be held in late May or June of 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to “IN TRUST OF JASON SPICER” at any ATB Financial. All funds will be evenly distributed to the following charities in Jason’s name: Brain Aneurysm Foundation, Brain Injury Association, SPCA, Whisker Rescue and the Children’s School Breakfast Program. A special thanks to Rodger Rowland, Stephanie Behm, Debbie Schmidt and Paige Lucas who found Jason; as well as Constable Desjardins and Constable Sterling for their assistance. The family is extremely grateful for Dr. Bailey, Gail Spiller and staff from the Grey Nuns Hospital who gave Jason new objectives to look forward to over the last several years of his life. Irene Ann Jones was born Oct. 6, 1935 in Camrose, Alberta to John and Julia Klug. She was the youngest of three children, having two older brothers. She passed away peacefully, at the age of 80, with her family at her side in St. Mary’s Hospital. Irene met and married Gordon “Shorty” Case and they spent many happy years together until his sudden passing in February of 1973. During their years together they moved numerous times to accommodate Shorty’s job. After Shorty’s passing, she moved to Surrey for a couple of years, until returning and marrying Edward “Sam” Jones July 18, 1975. They had a very long and fulfilling life together, living in Wainwright and finally in Camrose. Together they travelled, went camping, visited the casinos and spent time with family and friends. Irene enjoyed curling in her early years and later watched the game with great enthusiasm. She loved collecting cookbooks and reviewing them to find the next best recipe to make. While camping, mushroom picking was a must and with older brother Henry along, well you never knew what to expect when cleaning. She loved to crochet, garden and was a great cook. Her specialty was German Potato Salad which was passed down from her mother, Julia. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Edward “Sam”; brother John Klug of Camrose; nieces Diane Klug of Camrose, Shelley Moch of Camrose, and Linda Feindel of Edmonton; and sister-in-law Josephine Kuefler of Redwater; as well as numerous cousins and extended family. Irene was predeceased by her first husband Gordon, parents John and Julia, brother Henry, four brothers-in-law, and one sisterin-law. A Prayer Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wed., December 2, 2015 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 3, 2015 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Local football players win Atlantic Conference By Murray Green

The St. Francis Xavier X-men university football team (located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia) won the Atlantic Conference to earn a berth in the CIS Uteck Bowl. Although the X-men lost to the eventual national champion Vanier Cup winning UBC Thunderbirds 36-9, two former Camrose Composite High School Trojans played a big part in the team’s success this season. Linebacker Adam Kuntz and kicker Jonathan Heidebrecht logged good seasons to give the X-men a shot at the Uteck Bowl game. “Our season started out a little hit and miss. I went down to Toledo to repair some torn ligaments on my MCL and missed the first game. Then I came back in week four and eased into getting back to playing full time,” explained Kuntz. Kuntz was credited with 27.5 tackles and one interception during his four and a half games in the regular season. He was named athlete of the week Nov. 1. “After the first game major loss, we switched our defence to a 4-2 with two linebackers and we only gave up one touchdown in the next six games. On the defensive side of the ball we came out hard and became the strength of the team. We won six out of the next eight games and got on a roll,” he added. “Once we

X-Men coach Gary Waterman welcomed Adam Kuntz to the team as the university worked towards making a run at the Vanier Cup. St. Francis Xavier won the Loney Bowl recently.

were clicking on all three facets or our game the team took off. It has been 19 years since the school has won the Loney Bowl championship. It was a huge accomplishment when you consider the number of NFL and CFL players that have played here in the past. It was huge for the school for exposure and big for recruiting for the next year.” The players received a taste of what a champion-

ship season feels like. Next year has even bigger expectations. “We received the experience of playing in the Uteck Bowl. We didn’t have a great game, but we lost to the best team in the country. Our defence played well and it just wasn’t our offence’s day with seven turnovers. We didn’t get the bounces; that happens in football. Our defence showed we can played at that level.”

Kuntz expects a stringer year next fall. “We could go 8-0 or 7-1 based on the way the conference is shaping up. We only lose one defensive player and a couple on offence, but one is our All-Canadian running back Ashton Dickson, who was a workhorse. Our experience, the number of players coming back and the new recruits put us in a good position to make a run at the Vanier Cup again.” Acadia will lose more

veterans then the X-men and Mount Allison could lose about 16 players and a head coach for next season. “I don’t think they will match up to us next year. I felt good coming back. At first I was told my season was lost, but I worked hard and was able to contribute about six tackles a game to this championship season and it was good to be part of a history making season. If I can remain healthy I can have a good year next season,” said Adam. “I’m at the point that I can train properly and prepare for next year.” Heidebrecht was good on 13 field goals and 15-15 on point after attempts for 54 points in the regular season. X-Men head coach Gary Waterman led his team to a 14-12 Loney Bowl win over the two-time defending AUS champion Mount Allison Mounties. X-Men running back Ashton Dickson, defensive lineman Kay Okafor and kicker Heidebrecht were named AUS football athletes of the week for the week ending Nov. 15. Heidebrecht kicked the game winning field goal in the last second when he put one off the post and it went in. Waterman was happy for the X-Men to play in the Uteck Bowl, but also to host the game. The Thunderbirds went on to win the national title over the Montreal Carabins.

Midget Vikings conquer Ice Kings at Max McLean By Murray Green

The Camrose Vikings dethroned the Wetaskiwin Ice Kings 7-3 in a local rivalry during Northern Alberta Midget Hockey League action at the Max McLean Arena Nov. 21. “We are playing well right now. We had some new players join our roster this year who haven’t played at this level of hockey, so they are adjusting to the way the game is played at this level. It is taking some time, but in the last three months we have make some good strides,” said coach Paul King. “In the last three games things have come together really well.” The team started the season slow, but has since improved to the point where it is now even with the league’s best. “We found in this league that anybody can beat any team on a given day. The team that hasn’t been beaten could lose to the team that hasn’t won. The skill level is very equal across all of the teams,” said King. With skill level being fairly equal, the coach has to find another advantage. “It’s all in desire and

hard work. We have the skills, but we are a balanced team this team. We have scoring spread out throughout the whole lineup and that is a good thing. Our advantage is that we have three lines to score with and three lines to defend with where last year we counted on one line to do everything,” said King. “With our goaltending and when all of the players buy in defensively, there is

potential for us to go all of the way. “We used the Lloydminster game as a measuring stick of how we have progressed (Lloydminster won the first game 9-1). We lost (3-2), but it showed our progression. We were happy with the game and we had just as many changes as they did.” The teams were deadlocked at 2-2 after the first period. Camrose received

goals from Taylor Girard and Trevor Suominenn. Camrose exploded for four tallies in the second to take command of the contest. Girard netted two tallies to complete his hat trick, while Cody Milgate and Mathew Olofson added single markers. In the third period, Reegyn Graham connected on a power play goal to complete the scoring. Graham with two, Suominen with two, Milgate with two, Olofson, John Robbins, Grant Lynes and Girard collected assists. Goalie Brendon Davis made 28 of 31 saves in the Camrose net. The Vikings blasted 66 shots at the Wetaskiwin cage. The Vikings scored first against the Sturgeon Sting and hung on until the third period before the visitors scored to garner a tie. “They tied the game with a minute and a half in the third. We tied a very good team, so we are right with the top teams,” said King. “We are happy with the way things are going. We are still working on some basics and developing a smooth transition game. I

tell the team at every practice that the smallest detail makes a significant difference as the season progresses.” Daine Milgate scored for the Vikings with help from Colton Leslie and Bryn Ziegeman. Goalie Zach Wilms stopped 40 of the 41 shots he faced. Camrose fired 37 shots at the Sting in the close contest. Reducing the number of non-essential penalties is also on the radar of the coaches. “We are close to leading the league in penalties. We need to cut down on the slashing, hooking and holding penalties that are 200 feet from our net. That is one of the big things we are working on and it is a process,” said King. The next home game for the midget double-A Vikings is on Sunday, Dec. 20, when the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers stop at the Max McLean Arena for a 6:15 p.m. start. The Vikings play in Wetaskiwin on Dec. 6 and in Wainwright on Dec. 12 prior to the home game.

2015 Ford Fiesta Redefining the small car market Dan Madison

By Dan Jensen The 2014 Fiesta at Lamb Ford Sales Cam-

rose is redefining the small car market. “It delivers all the excitement drivers are looking for in a small car,” said Lamb Ford Sales sales manager Brett Read. Dynamic design Fiesta ST makes a strong initial impression with its unique highmounted body-colour rear spoiler, black headlamp bezels and fog lamps with carbon black bezels, a dual chrome-tipped exhaust, a black mesh grille with red ST badge, front and rear fascia lower extensions, and side rocker moldings. The unique front air fold and rear diffuser provide enhanced dynamics. Exterior paint colour options include Blue Candy Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, Green Envy Metallic TriCoat, and ST-exclusive Molten Orange Metallic Tri-Coat. Interior Open the door to the Fiesta and take your seat. You’re greeted by an intuitive center console, soft-touch materials and

available painted metallic accents. RECARO® seats on Fiesta ST hold you and your passenger firmly in place in tight cornering situations. Style is in high gear thanks to striking complementary colours. Heated front seats are included in the Comfort Package on the Fiesta SE and standard on the Titanium and ST. With Electronic Automatic Temperature Control, you just set the temperature you want and enjoy air conditioned or heated comfort. The Fiesta Titanium features standard leather seats and heated front seats with two comfort settings. The Fiesta comes with seven standard airbags. In fact, Fiesta was the first in its class to offer a driver’s knee airbag. This airbag inflates between the driver’s knees and the instrument panel to help provide protection in a crash. Extending through both rows of seats are also side-curtain airbags. They feature roll-fold technology, which is designed to inflate between the window glass and passenger’s

head. This helps keep the curtain against the glass and offers head protection in side impacts for all outboard seating positions. Performance The standard 1.6-litre twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) I-4 engine is engineered for impressive fuel efficiency. The engine block is designed using high-pressure die-cast aluminum for strength and light weight. Twin independent variable cam timing allows the camshafts to operate both intake and exhaust valves at different times in the combustion cycle, based on speed and load. The available dual dry-clutch PowerShift sixspeed automatic delivers performance similar to that of a manual transmission, with the shift quality and ease of operation provided by an automatic transmission. Enjoy the ease and control of a manual transmission with SelectShift®. You can change gears at the touch of a button without a clutch. Standard Electric Power-Assisted Steering helps deliver agile manoeuvrability and

responsive handling. It offers Pull-Drift Compensation to help correct for road irregularities and improve overall steering feel, and Active Nibble Control to help smooth out minor tire vibrations. The system continues to learn and adapt to steering conditions and gradually compensates for changes that can cause the vehicle to pull left or right. Torque Vectoring Control enhances road handling by adjusting the speed between the front wheels. When you’re accelerating through a corner, Torque Vectoring Control applies braking to the front inside wheel, so more of the engine torque goes to the outside wheel that has more grip. AdvanceTrac® helps you maintain control by automatically applying the brakes and modulating engine torque whenever it detects wheel slip. In combination with AdvanceTrac®, the standard Anti-lock Braking System helps maintain braking control under conditions such as ice, gravel or rain, providing confident stopping power. Fiesta’s available 1.0 EcoBoost engine with

twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) delivers power without compromising a thing. It has an intercooled DOHC 12-valve inline-3 for strength and an iron block and aluminum head with a variable-displacement oil pump to reduce friction and maximize efficiency. Technology The available technology features in the Fiesta are incredibly smart, powerful and easy to use. Using simple voice commands, you can access navigation, your phone and your music library. You can also have text messages read to you. Then there’s the convenience side of the Fiesta. An available rear view camera helps you see what’s behind you while backing up. Available intelligent access with push-button start lets you get in the car and start it up without even taking the keys out of your pocket. You can see the 2015 Ford Fiesta at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

By Lori Larsen Camrose EMS is encouraging residents to come out and support Camrose Neighbor Aid Center’s food bank by participating in the ninth annual Stuff an Ambulance event. It will be held at the Camrose Safeway (6800-48 Avenue) on Saturday, Dec 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ambulances will be set up in the parking lot with open doors ready to accept donations. Neighbor Aid food bank welcomes items such as canned foods (vegetables, soups, pork and beans), juices, pasta and pasta sauces, jams, oatmeal, and other nonperishable food items. “Even the odd perishable item we will take,” explained Camrose EMS member Pete Jensen. “We are in contact with Neighbor Aid and they give us a list of some of the items they find themselves particularly in need of and a lot of times that includes perishable. “Turkeys are one. I know we get a dozen frozen turkeys each time which is a big deal for the season.” Safeway also has available prepackaged donation bags in various denominations for your convenience. Hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner are also needed and gladly accepted. Cash donations are always welcome. “Half the money is donated as cash and half is spent on some additional food,” commented Jensen. “We don’t encourage fresh fruit. I think Neighbor Aid prefers to use the money for purchasing those items. “Last year the event raised approximately 6,000 pounds of food and about $2,000.” Jensen is one of the originators of the Camrose Stuff an Ambulance event. “The people who work EMS are the people who care about the community and care about helping,” said Jensen. “We believe in Neighbor Aid and when you’re in there and see the bins are empty and then they’re full at the end of the day that’s enough motivation.” This year during the event there will be a trailer and a large tent set up by EMS so residents can view some of the equipment used in the event of a mass casualty. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Council approves increase in hangar lease rates at airport By Lori Larsen

Camrose Municipal Airport hangar lease rates for 2016 will increase by five per cent to $1.505 per square metre. City council approved the increase at the regular council meeting on Nov. 16. Councillor Wayne Throndson inquired as to the what the norm is for hangar rentals. City infrastructure and planning services acting general manager Jeremy Enarson replied the fees are based on the size of the lot. A smaller lot could cost $600 while a larger lot could run any where from $3,000 to $5,000. Throndson also mentioned he had heard a rumour that people were living at the airport in leased hangars and that City bylaws prohibit the use of these lands for residential purposes. Enarson assured council that while the lease agreement does allow for up to 25 per cent of the lot be used for other storage purposes, to his knowledge no one was using the spaces for living. He went on to say inspections are conducted of the hangars and had not heard of anyone who was residing there. Fire bylaws spark interest

Sandy French Photo Camrose Cougars midget player Troy Campbell beats the SSAC goalie five-hole to help his team win 5-4 in a very close and physical game in the single-A Cougars tournament Nov. 20 to 22. The team finished with two wins and two losses.

Council passed an updated fire bylaw which removes the requirement for a permit for “petroleum storage tank and installation” and prohibits the sale and storage of fireworks within the City of Camrose. “It’s been a while since the bylaw has been looked at and bringing it up to speed with changes is consistent with industry,” said Fire Chief Peter Krich. Banning the sale and storage of fireworks does not, however, mean they can not be properly discharged. Discussions throughout the province determined a need for new rules on the sale and storage of fireworks to ensure their safe useage and likewise ensure the safety of Alberta communities.

Winter Solstice at 9:49 p.m. Dec. 21 As people are running to complete holiday errands they may forget that this time of year also features the winter solstice. The winter solstice takes place when the earth’s axis is farthest away from the sun, or at 23 degrees 26’. This day is the shortest day of the year in terms of sunlight. In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice takes place on either Dec. 21 or 22, or when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. In the southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed, therefore the winter solstice takes place on either June 21 or 22. The term “solstice” comes from the Latin solstitium, from sol, “sun” and -stitium, meaning “a stoppage.” That’s because during the solstice, the sun is in the lowest portion of the sky and its elevation at noontime seems to be unchanged for several days before and after the actual solstice. At this point in the year the daytime is the shortest and the nighttime is the longest. The length of time elapsed between sunrise and sunset on this day is a minimum for the year. Each day thereafter a little bit of extra daytime is gained until the summer solstice -- the longest day of the year. Of course, these measurements are based on the actual daylight hours, not modifications made by Daylight Savings Time, which artificially extends daylight hours. The winter solstice also marks the first “official” day of winter. This year it takes place on Dec. 21 at 9:49 p.m.

Kodiaks positioned for strong second half By Murray Green

Camrose Kodiaks coach and general manager Boris Rybalka didn’t receive a lot of sleep near the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Dec. 1 roster limit deadline. He pulled the trigger on three trades that made the team even better for the second half. “We are in first place, so we could have stood pat and not made any trades. However, one more solid veteran defenceman is something I had in the back of my mind,” he explained. “Spruce Grove approached us about Scott Ferguson because they needed a penalty killer and defensive forward. Right away, I was thinking about a defenceman and when they offered Tyler Morrison, I had to make the deal. He is what we wanted: a good puck moving defenceman, solid in the back end and poised in key situations.” Morrison has only played 14 games this season due to an injury, but has recorded a goal and added five assists. “Scott was a 20-year-old and one of our leaders. We had to get a leader in return to make the trade. Tyler has been in the Western Hockey League and recorded 21 and 23 point seasons before going to the AJHL. He is a veteran who also fills a leadership role. This is a trade that helps both teams. I shook Scott’s hand and told him we’ll meet in the finals.” Although the Kodiaks were good on defence, they have instantly improved. “This led to the next trade because it gave us eight defencemen and veteran players don’t like to be a healthy scratch,” said Rybalka. “Now we had too many defencemen. We traded Stephan Wack to White-

Ryan Hartman of the Camrose Kodiaks battles for the puck against the Calgary Canucks at the EnCana Arena. Three recent trades bolstered the line-up as the team focuses on finishing first in the south division of the AJHL.

court for Ryan Rebelato. This young man is tenacious, quick and in your face. His is a spark plug who can skate and he has skill. He has nine goals and isn’t afraid to go to the net and the dirty areas. When I told the guys in the dressing room that we got Ryan they said great because he is a pain to play against.” The third trade had Camrose forward Braeden Salverda go to Drumheller for Ethan James, a grinder with 13 points on the season.

“We want Salverda to get a scholarship and maybe this move helps him because, with the addition, he slipped out of the top six forwards. In Drumheller, he could become the number one centre and he will receive more playing time,” explained Rybalka. “Ethan is a smart hockey player who works hard and sees the ice well. He can play on any line because he is defensively strong and has skill on offence.” He told the coach he is excited to be a Kodiak.

“He told me that he wants to learn and is excited about winning a championship,” said Rybalka. The Kodiaks announced that Landon Pilger won’t be back this season due to a long term injury. Camrose dropped a 3-1 decision to the Calgary Canucks on Nov. 27. The Canucks scored first, but Mackenzie Bauer responded for the Kodiaks with help from Ryan Hartman and Cole McBride. After a scoreless even

second frame, Calgary took over in the third period with two tallies in 12 seconds. Goalie Brodan Salmond stopped 30 of 33 shots, while Camrose recorded 29 shots on the Calgary net. Bear facts

Camrose Special Olympics will display the Draft an Athlete campaign at the Kodiaks home games in December. Games are on Tuesday, Dec. 8 (Olds), Friday, Dec. 18 (Drumheller) and Saturday, Dec. 19 (Okotoks).
