When asked about choosing Eastlink as the company’s buyer, Lynx Net owner, Larry McLaren had this to say. “Having met Eastlink’s owner and key people, I truly believe that the company is run by good people who care. “This industry is undergoing a period of rapid change requiring significant amounts of capital investment to leverage growth opportunities. Given Eastlink’s proven track record in Alberta, its financial resources and its strong operational history, I am confident that they are the right people to drive the long-term success of our company.”

Libraries across Alberta are reaching out to encourage citizens to read for 15 minutes on January 27, 2016 to win the title of Alberta’s most ‘readerly’ community for Family Literacy Day. Camrose Public Library and Camrose Family Literacy have joined the Read for 15 challenge and the goal is to promote the importance of literacy in the community.

FAMILY LITERACY DAY CARNIVAL

Continuously flexing your reading muscles has been proven to reduce stress, expand vocabulary, improve memory, focus and concentration, and develop deep analytical thinking. It’s a rewarding recreational activity too.

You can help Camrose become Alberta’s most ‘readerly’ community!

Join us for carnival games, snacks, and activities, complete with face painting and balloon twisting courtesy of last year’s Family Literacy Day’s magical guests, Professor Copperpot and the Fairy Godmama!

Participation is easy. After you finish your 15 minutes of reading your chosen material, let the library know by posting a photo with the number of readers to https://www.facebook.com/CamroseLibrary/, email Readfor15camrose@prl.ab.ca , phone 780.672.4214, or stop by the library and we’ll make sure your reading is added to the tally. You can follow participation and report your reading by using #Readfor15Camrose on Twitter and Instagram.

Family Literacy Day celebration Jan. 27 By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Public Library and Camrose Family Literacy will be hosting their fourth annual carnival in recognition of Family Literacy Day Jan. 27. “We’re going to be offering crafts and playing games that should be fun and interesting for not only the children, but adults as well,” said Camrose Public Library program coordinator Nicole Bannick. “Our Amazing Race game has been set up in such a way as to encourage families with children to recognize shapes and do counting before they move onto the next step.” Most of the activities will involve some type of reading component and problem

solving. A “kissing booth,” for example, will encourage people to guess the number of Hershey Kisses in a jar, while a scavenger hunt will involve reading different clues to achieve the final goal. The carnival hopes to encourage families to incorporate reading into their own homes. “It’s all about families learning together,” said Camrose Family Literacy program coordinator Lynne Hartwick. “We encourage lots of positive activities and experiences, every day things like talking and singing together.” Special guests at the carnival will include Professor Copperpot and Fairy

Godmama, who will be doing balloon tying and face painting. The carnival will also provide the chance to win some great prizes, including a pair of tickets to Koba’s, an upcoming children’s show at the Bailey Theatre, and four tickets to a Fred Penner concert. Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on Jan. 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. “Family literacy programs focus on parents as the means to improve the

reading and writing skills of all family members,” says the ABC Life Literacy Canada website. “By reading to children and engaging in fun literacy activities, parents are actively keeping their own skills sharp while at the same time strengthening the relationship between the family which, in turn, encourages lifelong learning.” Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman feels that literacy is even more important in the current economic climate where jobs are starting to disappear. “There are people who are finding themselves out of work who don’t have the literacy skills to find or

qualify for new jobs,” said Cryderman. According to recently compiled statistics, 42 per cent of Canadian adults between the ages of 16 and 65 have low literacy skills, and 55 per cent of working age adults have less than adequate health literacy skills. An Adult Literacy and Life Skills survey conducted in 2003 showed that literacy challenges can be connected to pressing social and economic issues and made the conclusion that investments in foundation skills would lead to improved levels of health, increased productivity, reduced social costs and higher economic growth. Continued on page 24

Camrose Public Library encourages you to Read for 15 on Literacy Day By Dan Jensen Camrose Public Library is encouraging its patrons to read for at least 15 minutes Jan. 27. “We have entered a Read for 15 competition with the other libraries across the province to see which one can get the highest percentage of its community registering their 15 minutes of reading on Family Literacy Day,” explained Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman. “The library that has the highest percentage of its community registering wins a trophy and bragging rights.” The competition doesn’t place any restrictions on where the reading is done or the type of material that is read. “It could be a phone book, Facebook, a recipe or the road signs on the highway,” said Cryderman. “Read all the signs on the highway between here and Wetaskiwin and you will have your 15 minutes of reading.” Cryderman is hoping that different organizations will challenge each other to see which has the highest number of registered readers. “We could have the Booster challenge the Canadian or the maybe the RCMP could challenge the City police,” she said. Readers can report their participation by using #readfor15camrose on Twitter or Instagram, posting their accomplishment to the library’s Facebook page, filling out the web form at https://parklandab.wufoo.com/forms/ mtv03z5042izC2/, speaking to someone at the library in person or calling the library at 780-672-4214. Read for 15 is something in which Cryderman participated when she was working in the Northwest Territories. “I was thinking we should do this here in Camrose so I called a friend in Stony Plain and explained the idea,” she said. “We thought it would be just four libraries at first, but there was so much interest that we expanded it to include the rest of the province. We have libraries from every region in the province participating.” The competition’s main purpose is to make people aware that it is important to do a little bit of reading every day. “Reading is a basic function that affects everything we do in life, from filling out forms to making shopping lists and reading what is on labels,” said Camrose Family Literacy program coordinator Lynne Hartwick. The latest literacy study by Statistics Canada shows that millions of Canadians do not have the literacy skills they need to keep pace with the escalating demands of our society and economy. A one per cent increase in the literacy rate would generate $18 billion in economic growth every year. Investment in literacy programming generates a return of 241 per cent.

PICK A GOOD BOOK

Camrose Public Library staff Alyssa Martin, Brooklyn Wolf, Deb Cryderman and Shuham Elmi take a few moments to read their favourite book. Camrose Public Library is encouraging everyone to take fifteen minutes to read and register their reading on Family Literacy Day Jan. 27.

Mayor investigating possibility of out of town bus service By Dan Jensen

Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer is continuing to have conversations with transportation companies about the possibility of providing an out of town bus service. “Right now we’re looking at putting some prices and proposals together for a service that would be similar to what we had before that we can present to the provincial government,” said Mayer. “They (government) have some money set aside for rural transportation along that line.” Mayer envisions the service as being strictly experimental at first. “We would have to gauge whether or

not there would be enough interest to keep it going,” he said. Mayer noted the City of Camrose does not get a lot of comments from residents asking for out of town service. “We run into it every so often where we hear about people having difficulty to get to medical appointments and things of that nature,” he said, “but fortunately for our community there are a lot of people who volunteer as drivers who can help with the back and forth.” Mayer said he hasn’t had any discussions with council about his ideas, but

as for now there isn’t anything to present. “I think philosophically council would say it would be nice to have a service but we have to have some cold hard figures and we have to have the money. I don’t have any fear that I would have their moral support to try to move forward with something if we can get it financed and find someone that is prepared to provide the service.” The City has already allocated its 2016 funding for public transit towards an extended Handivan service and $4 tokens that can be redeemed with taxi companies.

“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” “Forgiveness is not an occasional act. It is a permanent attitude.” “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” “Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness.” “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.” “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” “Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.” “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others.” “There are some things so dear, some things so precious, some things so eternally true, that they are worth dying for. And I submit to you that if a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.” “We’ve been in the mountain of war. We’ve been in the mountain of violence. We’ve been in the mountain of hatred long enough. It is necessary to move on now, but only by moving out of this mountain can we move to the promised land of justice and brotherhood and the Kingdom of God. It all boils down to the fact that we must never allow ourselves to become satisfied with unattained goals. We must always maintain a kind of divine discontent.” “When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.” ***

Record number of entries for 4-H Heifer Show By Laurel Nadon

With two previous heifer shows under his belt, Carson Berg is hoping that the third time is the charm at the 4-H Heifer Show, coming up at the Canadian Bull Congress which will run on Jan. 22 and 23 in Camrose. The 17-year-old, who lives on a family farm near Bawlf and is also the president of the Rosalind 4-H Club, said that he views the competition as a chance to promote his herd. “It gets young people out there to show off their cattle and they get connections with other breeders,” Berg said. He reasoned that the key to success is having what the judges like. “You make sure your animals are looking good and they’re fed, watered and fitted (styled) properly,” Berg said, noting that he will compete with his heifer “May”, who weighs approximately 750 pounds. “Her qualities are what I wanted to put into my herd. She’s a very square animal who stands well and she has a very moderate frame. She’s very quiet, she’s not very rambunctious.” Enrollment for the show has hit record levels, going from 22 entries last year to

Photo submitted Enrollment is at a record high for the 4-H Heifer Show which will be held on Friday, Jan. 22 as part of the Canadian Bull Congress in Camrose. Carson Berg, shown above at Farmfair International in 2014, will compete in the senior level at the show. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event.

approximately 34 this year. The swell of entries has meant that the juniors and intermediates have been divided this year. Competitors ages 9 to 11 will compete at the junior level, ages 12 to 14 at the intermediate level and ages 15 to 20 at the senior level. “It caught me by surprise,” said Canadian Bull Congress committee mem-

ber Charlie Gould of the increased entries. “I wonder if the showmanship concept encouraged more kids, or maybe because it was the 30th anniversary more kids decided to take part. This is the most kids we’ve ever had entered in the heifer classes.” A Showmanship Class was included last year for the first time in the Heifer

Show, and will be included once again as it went over well. “Showmanship is a big aspect in the 4-H program in the shows the kids take part in,” Gould said. “We thought it was important to add this part to the Canadian Bull Congress.” He added that the panel of judges will watch for eye contact with the judges, how

participants handle their showstick and show courtesy to the other members. The prizes for the showmanship category are hoodies as well as $100 for first place and $50 for second place. The annual Heifer Show provides exposure for club members as well as valuable life skills such as problem-solving, time management and public speaking. The heifers will be judged on their potential of becoming a milk producer and breeding cow as well as the frame of the animal, correctness in structure, legs and feet. The champion prize is $300 and the reserve champion prize is $200 plus jackets for both. “It’s to give them practice showing cattle and to meet and have fun with members from other parts of Alberta,” Gould said. Berg said that the competition also gives youth ideas of what other people have in their herds, gives them confidence in speaking to others as well as organizational skills. Berg’s goal is to win his class and qualify for the Supreme Show in November at the Farmfair International in Edmonton.

Public speaking skills gained at judging workshop By Laurel Nadon

It was when fourth year Biology major Jessica Sperber gave an orientation to 12,000 students at MacEwan University that she realized how important the skills were that she gained through 4-H Club. Sperber spent nine years in the Ponoka District 4-H Club and excelled at the Alberta Provincial Multi Species Judging Contest in 2011. She went on to represent team Alberta at the Montana Nile Livestock Show. She has also judged at the Junior Farmfair for Futurity in Edmonton as well as the Vermilion Stock Show and for Rimbey 4-H. She will bring her wealth of knowledge when she speaks to the senior group at the judging workshop held during the Canadian Bull Congress at the CRE on Saturday, Jan. 23. “Judging teaches that there are characteristics they should be looking for,” Sperber said. “The most beneficial thing I learned from judging is being able to apply that to my animal the next year and animals you’re going to breed for years to come.” Sperber will explain the qualities and characteristics people look for when judging heifers and bulls, as well as how to give a complete set of reasons. “Learning how to judge in 4-H taught me everything I now know about the ag indus-

try,” Sperber said. “It shows them these characteristics are working out for these breeders.” Sperber, who was raised on a beef farm west of Ponoka, plans to begin her Agricultural Masters in Animal Welfare and Behaviour. She said the

workshop participants will be able to use their knowledge for their own herds or if they seek careers in agriculture such as becoming cattle buyers or working in the option markets. “It supplies life skills such as public speaking which

will definitely assist them in post-secondary,” Sperber said. “Judging gives you confidence.” This year will see the highest number ever in the senior group of participants, though the overall numbers are down for the workshop. This year 220 club members will take part compared to 240 last year. “It was a record-breaking year last year for numbers,” said Charlie Gould, a workshop organizer and Canadian Bull Congress committee member, who noted that entry levels go in cycles. “Anytime kids have public speaking or judging experience and have contact with people making decisions, it all helps to build your confidence up and prepares you for what life brings you.” The junior group, for ages 9 to 11, will have 80 participants and will receive a basic introduction to judging animals and learn how to prioritize and organize. They will work through seven stations and judge animals such as guinea pigs, hedgehogs, budgies and a heifer calf. The intermediate group for ages 12 to 14 will have just under 70 participants and will learn the form and function of various species of animals. They will learn why dairy and beef cattle are built how they are and similarities. Partici-

pants will also be expected to explain their reasons orally. The senior group, for ages 15 to 20, will have 70 participants and they will perform a hands on judging of beef heifers, goats and forages where they will judge the quality of feed. Members have judged grain and pulse crops before, but not forages. “It’s so they know what to look for when they’re feeding their animal, looking at nutrition-wise and tastiness and ease of an animal to eat it,” Gould said. “We throw it in to prepare the kids.” He noted that the judging workshop prepares club members for shows at their club level and throughout their region as well as provincial competitions in the summer and the Agribition Shows in Denver and Regina. “It’s how to recognize and prioritize things and how to apply that to day-to-day life,” Gould noted. “It’s about how to make choices and to know why you made that choice. It prepares you for making any decisions you make. You’re going to go out to buy a car; you prioritize and then judge which one to purchase.” Each participant will receive a binder with 4-H emblem as a keepsake item. Club members can also take part in the fourth annual Scavenger Hunt after the workshop.

Camrose Police Service stopped a vehicle along Highway 13A just west of Exhibition Drive for a traffic violation. As the officer was speaking to the driver a passing vehicle struck the side of the parked police car, causing minor damage to the vehicle’s side rearview mirror. The passing vehicle then continued to drive away without stopping. The investigation is continuing. Several complaints were received from people in the area of 68 Street and the 4800 block reporting two pitbull dogs were running loose and were becoming aggressive toward people trying to coral them. The owner of the dogs was eventually identified and it was determined that the dogs had not been properly secured at home, resulting in their escape. Patrol officers responded to a complaint of a domestic argument within a residence. When officers arrived a man was noted to be extremely intoxicated and the primary cause of the disturbance within the home. The 40-year-old man from Camrose was arrested to prevent further breach of the peace and released from custody in the morning without any charges.

Elvis tribute highlights his musical journey By Murray Green

Donny Edwards, the master of tributing Elvis, will be performing The King, A musical Tribute, in Camrose at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts centre on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. His western Canadian tour includes five stops in Alberta and three in British Columbia. “I’ve played with several Elvis tribute artists and Donny is the best,” said promoter Mike Schell, who is also a member of the Uptown Hornz band that will be backing him on stage. “Currently, Donny is in Australia, but he is looking forward to his Camrose show and the tour.” Schell has played at the Bailey Theatre previously, but the Edwards show is so popular that it was booked at the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre to accommodate a larger audience. “It is always exciting to play in a new facility, so we are looking forward to that. Cassandra Friskie is opening the show with her tribute to Marilyn Monroe. She has sung in Camrose before with her dad, who is also an Elvis performer,” recalled Schell. Edwards’ “The King” will take you back to the beginning of Elvis’ career in the 1950s and the spark

of the rock ‘n roll revolution. Relive the moments of the Memphis Flash with hits like “Hound Dog,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Love Me Tender” and “All Shook Up.” Then travel into the 60’s with the hits “It’s Now or Never” and “Viva Las Vegas” prior to the intermission. The second half leads to Elvis’ astonishing climatic concerts of the 1970s with hit songs and performances of “Burning Love,” “My Way,” “American Trilogy” and “Suspicious Minds.” The Edwards perfor-

mance is so authentic you’ll feel as if you’re watching the King himself. With Edwards’ looks, moves and voice backed by the fabulous Cadillac Kings band, it’s a performance not to be missed. “All of the costumes will be authentic, like the ones Elvis wore,” added Schell. Edwards is an internationally known, multi award winning veteran entertainer, performing his tribute to The King of Rock n Roll to sold out audiences, worldwide.

“He is a Las Vegas casino headliner act and is the only tribute artist ever to perform on the estate grounds of Graceland, Elvis’ home in Memphis, Tennessee. At that show, he was also made an honorary Tennessean by the governor,” said Schell. Edwards has performed for celebrities such as Marie Osmond, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart, to name a few. He has also portrayed The King in commercials world wide and TV shows such as The Young and the Restless and several documentaries about Elvis Presley. Edwards has performed with many of Elvis’ legendary band members, including The Jordanaires, The Sweet Inspirations, Millie Kirkham, DJ Fontana and bassist Bob Moore. “There are a lot of Elvis performers out there, but with Donny, it’s a tribute about honouring the memory of Elvis Presley in the most authentic way possible,” said Schell. He will be touring with Western Canada’s premiere Elvis tribute band, The Cadillac Kings, featuring the Uptown Hornz. This tour is presented by Schell Shock Ent Inc. and TCB Rock and Roll Legends. Tickets are available at the Lougheed Arts Centre box office.

Honour your departed friend or relative …with a memorial gift that will do good in their name forever.

August 7, 2000 – December 22, 2015 Reid Michael Kyfiuk was born on August 7, 2000 in Powell River, BC and he passed away on December 22, 2015 while snowboarding with his family at Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island. Reid lived in Powell River until 2008, then moved with his family to Victoria, BC. Reid lit up the room with his zest for life. He always tried to make people laugh or feel better. He had a radiant smile to match his contagiously happy and energetic spirit. Reid loved to be outside, and would constantly remind others to take the time to have fun. When it came to sports, Reid had a warrior’s heart. He worked hard and his passion for whatever sport he was playing (hockey, golf, baseball) shone through to coaches, teammates and fans. Reid was also generous and kind. He always told his family that he loved them, and wasn’t shy to do it in public. He looked out for his parents: he’d wrestle Mom, but always made sure not to hurt her; he’d take a bit of power off his knuckle ball so that he didn’t hurt Dad. Reid maintained the faith of a child. He had an unconditional love for God and a divine insight for how everyone should live. Reid’s sister says that his eyes were like a window into Heaven. Everyone loves him. Left to cherish Reid are his parents Andy and Denise Kyfiuk; his siblings Eric, Lauren, Dean, Tayler and Andrea; his grandparents Mike and Helen Kyfiuk from Red Deer, AB (formerly of Consort, AB); many uncles, aunts, cousins and countless friends. He is predeceased by his grandparents Steve and Marge Yuha from Rosalind, AB; and his cousin Ben Yuha from Spirit River, AB. The family asks that in lieu of flowers or donations, people pray the “Divine Mercy Chaplet” in memory of Reid. It is a very special prayer that can be found on the internet. Reid is not gone, he’s just living in a different place now. We can still talk to him, God just took him home. Funeral Services and interment have taken place in Victoria, BC. Please forward condolences to Burgar Funeral Home, 4817-51 Avenue, Camrose, AB T4V 0V4.

On the Other Hand…

ANNUAL

A question of perspective Some time ago, I had a trip that involved four legs of travel to complete. I like to fly, and so was looking forward to the flight as much as to the events at my destination. (I also look forward to the return as Dorothy was right – “There is no place like home.”) The airline prided itself for on time departures and arrivals, which is one of the reasons I chose to travel with them. True to their word, on my outbound travel we had two on time departures and two on time arrivals. Each time I smiled as a crew member announced once airborne or at the terminal, “Thank you for flying with us, the world’s most on time airline.” Just saying it doesn’t make it true, but it did match my experience. I thanked the cabin crew upon exiting and expressed my appreciation for their on time service. When it was time to return, I looked forward to that same prompt and timely service. Leg three was another on time departure and arrival with a reminder that they were the “worlds most on time airline.” On the final leg: We encountered bad weather and we were slowed by powerful headwinds. We were routed around a massive thunderstorm. We were late getting to the airport of destination, and lost our place in the landing cue, so we were forced to circle in a holding pattern. Finally, due to the untimely arrival, the gate crew was busy with another flight and we were further delayed. At last the plane pulled to the jetway and the cabin door was being opened. A crew member simply announced, “Welcome to Edmonton.” That was it. Yes, we were ninety minutes late. Yes, there were some disgruntled passengers. Yes, there would be issues to be resolved due to our lateness. I am still not sure whether it was good judgment or cowardice. I wanted to stand up and shout for all to hear – “Thank you for flying with us, the world’s most on time airline.” We had four on time departures and three on time arrivals. The fourth arrival was late, and not at the fault of the airline. Why did the crew not recognize that this one late arrival did not diminish the truth of their prior statements? I left the plane and wandered to baggage claim. As I did, I noticed the headlines and covers on display in the newsstands. It began to dawn on me that those headlines, like the airline crew, let one anomaly change their perspective. The anomalies of human behavior, the negative influences, and the problems of life defined their perspective and their pronouncements of reality. The airline crew let one late arrival redefine their perspective and their announcement. The media lets the “bad news” define the news cycle. The public has learned to define reality based on anomalies and limited experience rather than the broader truth. Wait, I am the public. On the other hand, what if I quit focusing on the negatives, the problems and the anomalies in favor the bigger and truer picture of life?

Canadian Jim Witter taught himself how to be a piano man and now he honours Billy Joel and Elton John with his Piano Men concert at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Jan. 30. By Murray Green

It is rare to find an artist so talented that he or she can perform cover songs that turn out even better than the original composition. Canadian singer and pianist Jim Witter is one of those artists. Witter will be showcasing his Piano Men concert featuring the masterpieces of Billy Joel and Elton John at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre starting at 8 p.m. Jan. 30. “I’m excited to play at the new performing arts centre. Nick (Beach, LPAC acting general manager) and I went through the list of equipment the theatre has like tech nerds and talked shop. We talked about the toys and I’m excited to be able to come to Camrose,” said Witter. “We put on the same show regardless, but a state of the art system makes it so much more enjoyable. It’s like the difference of driving an old beat up car and driving something that is brand new. In the end, what matters is how the audience responds.” His renditions are so riveting that if you close your eyes, you would think you are listening to hall of fame artists themselves. He is known world-wide for matching Joel’s music and vocals note for note. “I’m not one of those copy-cat artists and I don’t emulate them. However, I learned to play the piano by listening to them. I would borrow my brother’s copy of the Piano Man album. When I was about 12 years old my

brother had tickets to a Billy Joel concert and his friend was sick and couldn’t go, so he asked me. Every since I heard “Piano Man” I was hooked. I told my mom the next day what I wanted to do in life. It was like an epiphany,” Witter explained. “My mom taught me a few chords and then I taught myself how to play the piano.” Although his voice naturally sounds like Billy Joel, his constant work with his music created an iconic mirror image. “I learned to sing by listening to Billy Joel as well. It is easy for me to play “Piano Man” because I have been learning that song since I was 12,” said Witter. “Then I fell into that vibe where I learned all of his songs. I had a brother who liked Elton John and the album Honky Tonk Chateau, so I listened to that a lot. He was also a great piano man, so I started working on his songs. Whether I sound like him or not, I’m not sure. I’m so intimate with those original recordings because they were a big part of my childhood. I don’t try to sound like him, but I stay as close to the original arrangements as I can.” Witter’s versatility as an artist has allowed him the opportunity to reach out and share his music and his infectious personality with audiences of all ages across North America. He is capable of going back to the same stage with the same fans and performing an entirely different concert that leaves fans amazed at his talent. “I also have a Beatles

show, Simon and Garfunkel and even Barry Manilow concert. A big part of the shows is using the big screen behind us and to relive the era of the 70s. We like to take people back in time to hear different artists.” Witter has a rich, powerful voice and has an ease of manner at the piano that makes him a favourite everywhere he travels. “We get to know people in every city because we can go back with a totally different show,” said Witter. “I like to have interactive shows and sing-alongs so it is fun for everyone.” Witter has earned multiple awards and nominations from the Canadian Country Music Association, the Juno Awards and, most recently, the Dove Awards in Nashville, where his album Forgiveness was nominated for Inspirational Album of the year. From his first self titled record, to All My Life and Forgiveness, Witter has had 10 top 10 radio hits in Canada and seven hit videos on CMT, Billboard and R&R. A few years ago, Witter came up with the concept for the show “The Piano Men”; a musical journey through the 70s featuring the songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. “I was always a big fan of acoustic music – especially the folk of the ‘70s,” he shared, “but my real mentors were Billy Joel and Elton John.” To listen to the great songs of Billy Joel and Elton John played like they were meant to be played, contact the Lougheed Centre for tickets at the box office.

The Wet Secrets at Bailey Theatre

By Murray Green

Edmonton band The Wet Secrets will be performing at in the next Rose City Roots Series event at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 23. The six piece rock ’n roll dance band blends catchy lyrics with both regular rock instruments and horn sounds. The band was formed on a dare by Lyle Bell, Trevor Anderson and Kim Rackel and launched a CD entitled A Whale of a Cow CD in 2006. Written and recorded within a week of getting together, it was a clarion call to anyone within earshot that The Wet Secrets had arrived. The Wet Secrets’ members are Lyle Bell (bass/ vox), Trevor Anderson (drums/vox), Kim Rackel (tuba/trumpet/vox), Donna Ball (trombone/vox), Jeremy Nischuk (keyboards) and Doug Organ (keyboards). A year later the band released Rock Fantasy and the track “Secret March” which reached number two on the national CBC chart. International acclaim soon followed. The band played the opening slot at Edmonton’s inaugural Sonic Boom festival. Grant Lawrence of CBC Radio 3 named “Secret March” one of the Top 20 Songs of the 2000s. The third album, Free Candy, came after the a four-year hiatus in which members focused on other projects. The Wet Secrets brought new material with more excitement. The band is planning a new CD release in early 2016, so local fans can listen to some songs that could be featured on the new album. Tickets for the 8 p.m. event are available at the Bailey Box Office or online.

Vintage railway excursions Continued from page 15 Once in Forestburg passengers will be treated to dinner and the stage production “Not Now Darling,” by Ray Cooney and John Chapman. The train experience is

The community of Camrose is fortunate it has been identified as a priority by Alberta Health Services for an upgrade to its heliport. The investment will provide better access to emergency care for patients in the community and area. The ability to have specialty trained medical personnel from STARS on site in the emergency department at St. Mary’s to work with the Camrose team will help improve patient care outcomes. The new heliport will allow for larger AW139 helicopters to land. The AW139 medically-equipped helicopters can provide an advanced level of medivac care to a wider area. These helicopters have a larger medical interior with the ability to accommodate more than one patient at a time, more powerful lift capacity, and can fly better in adverse weather conditions where ground ambulance and longer transport times would have been required in the past. A thorough evaluation was done by specialists in the field to determine the best heliport location for the site. They considered helicopter flight patterns, impact on

nearby residents (including noise) and off-site obstructions, proximity to the emergency department, security and maintenance and operational requirements. The conclusion in Camrose was to keep the heliport next to the hospital. Camrose’s upgrades are considered a priority because of high volume. Last year, St. Mary’s received 31 STARS air ambulance transfers and with the new heliport that number is expected to increase slightly. When the new heliport opens in spring 2016 we hope Camrose residents will take comfort knowing they will have improved access to air ambulance service and it will be seamlessly connected to their hospital. Cindy Mulherin, senior director, operations – rural acute care, Covenant Health, Steve Rees, senior program officer, capital management, Alberta Health Services Clock is ticking

I am writing in response to Ron Pilger’s letter of Jan. 5. Moot point at this stage, as the money has already been spent. For argument’s sake let’s do a reality check on Mr. Pilger’s idea of leaving STARS at the airport. Trust me, it’s not a simple three to five minute trip. Start the clock on this trip from St. Mary’s. First, EMS has to come from the station in the east end – five to seven minutes depending on how much medical paraphernalia is being loaded. Then we leave for the airport. On a good day it is a seven minute trip. The clock is running – we are now between 17 and 29 minutes. However, there is a wildcard aspect to this trip. It is called the train. There are

four crossings in Camrose on the tracks running east and west between 51 and 52 Avenue. We are seeing “super trains” on a more frequent basis. These super trains can be crossing all four at one, and, God help you if it stops. Happens fairly often. Then you are looking at an additional five minutes (if it is moving) to 30 minutes (if stopped). Add into the equation the traffic congestion once the train has moved off. Tack on five more minutes. Are you keeping track of the clock? We are now looking at a 27 to 65 minute trip to the airport. And guess what Mr. Pilger? That patient is still going to have to be transferred to the helicopter out in the elements. A three to five minute transfer from St. Mary’s directly to the helipad is starting to look real good right about now. The patient would already be well on the way to Edmonton. Well worth the $2 million to have it on site, in my opinion. Now if you want to sink your teeth into a waste of money, look at what is going to be spent to raise the elevation of the highway over Mirror Lake under the guise of replacing the bridge. Personally, I think that money would be better spent building an overpass or underpass on at least one of the above mentioned rail crossings. That way those citizens who live and/or work on the north side of Camrose don’t need to live in fear when they call for EMS or fire, wondering how long it is going to take emergency services to get to them. Remember, there are two schools north of the tracks. The clock is ticking. Just something to think about. Lori Blades, Camrose

2016 Ford Edge A showcase of innovation Craig Beddoes

By Dan Jensen

With its bold design, the 2016 Ford Edge at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose will definitely get you noticed. Edge sets itself apart with a dynamic grille, sleek roof and aerodynamic shape and a commanding profile. “The inviting and charismatic design of the 2016 Ford Edge inspires confidence, turns heads and changes the way you feel about everyday driving,” said Lamb Ford Sales sales manager Brett Read. “There’s something inspiring about the power dome hood, raised belt lines and boldly sculpted shoulders around the wheel arches. It’s a proud, impressive look with sharp angles and graphic lines.” Power to go

Three different engines provide more than enough attitude under the hood. The Twin-Scroll 2.0 litre EcoBoost offers lively acceleration and passing performance. This standard powerhouse produces 245 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of lowend torque. The engine also features available Auto Stop-Start technology for improved fuel efficiency. In city driving, the engine automatically shuts off when the vehicle comes to a stop. Then as traffic once again starts to

move, the engine automatically restarts when your foot leaves the brake pedal. The available 3.5 litre twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) can be easily described in two words: no compromise. It delivers 280 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque. With conventional valve timing, the intake and exhaust valves have to open and close at a fixed point, compromising performance. But Ti-VCT virtually eliminates this compromise. With its variable control of valve cam timing, Ti-VCT can optimize performance across the entire low, mid and high ranges of the power band to match driving conditions. The dynamic 2.7-litre EcoBoost® engine that powers the Ford Edge Sport kicks out 315 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. The Active Grille Shutters, standard on EcoBoost® models, help to reduce air resistance and optimize fuel efficiency. When the Active Grille Shutters are fully closed, vehicle aerodynamics are improved by reducing airflow through the radiator. With the front air curtains, aero ducts are positioned on the lower fascia of the vehicle. Air is guided through these ducts and forced out

across the front wheel wells, creating an air curtain down the vehicle side. You don’t have to know how to drive a manual transmission or learn how to master a clutch to enjoy the sporty feel of shifting gears. Using race-inspired technology, the steering wheelmounted paddles provide an engaged driving experience by letting you easily and quickly go from gear to gear without taking your hands off the wheel. Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support represents a major step beyond conventional cruise control. When its radar sensor detects traffic slowing ahead, your vehicle also slows down. After traffic has cleared, your vehicle resumes the preset speed. This system lets the driver set distance, speed and the time gap between vehicles. The system can also alert you to a potential collision by flashing a warning on the windshield, sounding an alarm, and prepping the braking system to help. Adaptive steering

Available Adaptive Steering is the next evolution in steering technology. The system controls the relationship between how much the driver turns the wheel and how much

the front wheels turn. Lowspeed steering – such as pulling into a parking space – requires much less turning of the wheel. Enhanced Active Park Assist is designed with side parking sensors to give you confidence and help make perpendicular and parallel parking a breeze. While driving slowly near parking spots, activate this feature and Ford Edge will scan for available spaces. Ultrasonic sensors measure the distance from other vehicles, and once an appropriate spot is identified, you’re signaled to stop and accept the system’s assistance. With a few actions on your part – shifting, accelerating and braking – the vehicle can smoothly parallel park or back into a perpendicular parking space. At slow speeds, Ford Edge helps you see around corners, down alleys and even helps while you’re pulling out of parking spots, thanks to the available 180-degree camera tucked into the grille. An included pop-out washer helps keep the lens clean and your view clear. Interior design

The quality and craftsmanship can be seen and felt everywhere throughout the interior of 2016 Ford Edge. The Edge Titanium

features a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-trimmed sport seats. Other smart touches include metal-plated accents, mechanical stripe aluminum applique, illuminated scuff plates and ambient lighting. Choose lighting that fits your mood with the available seven-colour programmable Ambient Lighting feature that’s standard in Titanium and Sport. LEDs illuminate various areas such as the front foot wells and cup holders. Choose Ice Blue®, Orange, Soft Blue, Red, Green, Blue or Purple. The elegance and craftsmanship of design can be seen all around – and above you. The available panoramic Vista Roof® features a large forward panel that tilts up or opens fully, plus a fixed rear skylight. So whether you’re sitting up front or in back, the Vista Roof® lets in more of the world above. With the available second-row EasyFold® seat release, you can maximize your cargo space with the touch of a button. You can see the 2016 Ford Edge at Lamb Ford Sales on Highway 13 East Camrose. Randal Nickel, executive director from the Camrose Open Door provided an example of success, which he referred to as a “Mission Moment.” Nickel related a story to attendees at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting on Jan. 6, explaining that eight youth staying at the shelter were placed in homes for Dec. 25 and 26. One placement in particular raised concerns as to

whether or not it would be a good decision. “There was a history within that family of relationship breakdowns over a period of time,” said Nickel. “The family members had come to the point where they felt this is not going to work, we’re not going to coexist with each other. “There was a real sense of pessimism about the opportunities for a reconciliation. The feelings were that this person was never going to change or this would never work out positively.” When the youth returned back home for Dec. 25 and 26 even the employ-

ees of Open Door had their concerns. “If you believe that it’s not going to work you’re going to create that reality,” commented Nickel. “After coming back from a couple of days with family (the youth) reported having had a good experience and was ready to move back home. “We (employees of Open Door) all jumped up and down and said how awesome it was.” Moments like these are real lifeexamplesthatthemissionstatements of an organization are successful. “This was a real glimpse of something positive happening even if all parties were skeptical,” concluded Nickel.

Bannick sees many library users who have difficulties with computer literacy. “Most of the job searches are done online and these people don’t know where to start,” said Bannick. “They don’t know how to create a resume online and upload it to a job search website. We have been helping people a lot with that lately.” Cryderman believes children who receive proper literacy education early in life will be better off when they become adults. “The skills we give them at a young age will help them to better succeed,” she said. Camrose Family Literacy strives to give kids the basic foundation that they need when they start school. The Building Blocks program involves someone from the program going to the home of someone who has been referred to provide family support with literacy. “There are lots of people who didn’t grow up in homes where there was the opportunity to read or play games or do any of the other things that develop strong literacy skills,” said Hartwick. “Our job with the Building Blocks program is to go out and give parents ideas on some of the things they can do with their kids.” The four-week-long Books for Babies program stresses the importance of parents reading with their children and the importance of play. “Children learn through play so we show them (parents) all the different ways they can do that,” said Hartwick. “We also give them a different book in each of the four weeks. They are such good books that I wish every family had one. The best books for children have an interesting story and simple illustrations. Bannick said Books and Bounces is one of the most popular literacy programs for infants at the library because it involves singing, rhymes and play. “There is a lot of interaction, which is huge for helping the kids develop,” she said. Bannick said that even board games have a literacy component. “I have had some people question why we do board games here, but with almost every one of them there is a reading component. They (games) teach you how to solve problems and involve a lot of sequential learning.” Cryderman said any program the library does has some sort of literacy component, whether it be reading or following instructions. Hartwick noted it is important to begin listening, talking and singing to babies right away, even before they are talking. “The more they hear the language the more that language development is going to happen. “Listening to adults speak helps children learn the rhythms and cadences of language in a way they can’t learn from television.” The Camrose Family Literacy Day carnival will be held at the library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. More information may be obtained by contacting the Camrose Public Library at 780-672-4214.

Shoppers Drug Mart Camrose front store manager Rick Graumann, left, associate owner Gary Wowk, and assistant front store manager Kim Dewald, right, present a cheque for $4,600 to Camrose Women’s Shelter executive director Nora-Lee Rear. By Dan Jensen

The four-week long Growing Women’s Health campaign at Shoppers Drug Mart in Camrose raised $4,600.14 for the Camrose Women’s Shelter. “The success of the Growing Women’s Health Campaign can be attributed to the support and commitment of our loyal customers and staff,” said Shoppers Drug Mart Camrose associate owner Gary Wowk. “We are pleased to present this year’s Growing Women’s Health campaign to the shelter.” Growing Women’s Health, formerly known as the Tree of Life Campaign, is one of the leading partnership programs of

the Shoppers Drug Mart LOVE YOU platform, which is the company’s commitment to improving the health of Canadian women in body, mind and spirit. In support of leading women’s health organizations, customers, staff and pharmacist-owners at over 1,250 Shoppers Drug Mart locations raise funds through the sale/purchase of the Growing Women’s Health paper icons of a butterfly, apple, cardinal and leaf. Customers and employees are also able to donate directly to charitable organizations to ensure that resources and programming are available to meet the needs of Canadian women.

Since 2002 the Shoppers Drug Mart campaign has raised more than $26 million for Canadian charities. One hundred per cent of the proceeds stay in the community in which they are raised. Shoppers’ LOVE YOU represents the organization’s commitment to improving the health of all Canadian women. Brought to life through important partnership programs, created with leading experts and institutions in women’s health, this national initiative connects women to health information and resources that help ensure their health only gets stronger.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Kodiaks earn a split with rival Canmore Eagles By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks split a two-game series with the Canmore Eagles on Jan. 8 and 9. The local team wanted more than two points, but the squad was slowed in a penalty-filled match. In the second game, the Eagles soared with three straight power play tallies and went on to win 4-2. “We outplayed them and out shot them, but we seemed to hit a lot of goal posts and crossbars. The puck just didn’t go in for us,” said forward Ethan James. “That changed the game for us. If those shots go in, it is a different game for us.” Canmore led 1-0 after the first period and 3-1 after 40 minutes. Defenceman Trevor Costello netted the first Camrose marker and Ryan Rebelato replied in the third. “We need to focus on

winning every game and not worry about anyone else. Hopefully, they (Brooks) start losing,” said James. Goalie Brodan Salmond stopped 22 of 26 shots in the

Camrose net. The Kodiaks carried the play and fired 48 shots on goal. “I like playing in Camrose. Ever since I got here, I’ve felt that I fit in really

well. It’s a winning team, so I like that,” said James. “The hockey is better and it is one of the best organizations in the league. Camrose won the opening game 6-4 when they were allowed more space to set up plays. However, the contest was tied 4-4 after two periods and a strong third frame was the difference. “We have our lines set now and we just need to work hard all of the time. We need to work on little things like chipping the puck forward, tweaking our power play, skating, making sure our shots are on net, face-offs and other little things to make us better,” said James. Nelson Gadoury sparked the offence with two goals, while Cole McBride, Ethan James, Stefan Dan-

ielson and Rebelato added single markers. Goalie Patrick Gora turned away 24 of the 28 shots directed his way. The Kodiaks collected 44 shots at the Eagles’ net. James has added offence to the Kodiaks after the early December trade to Camrose. “I like to think I’m a power forward who likes to go in the corner and get greasy. I’m a playmaker, pass first kind of guy,” explained James. Bear facts

The Kodiaks return for a Jan. 22 game in the EnCana Arena with the Olds Grizzlys starting at 7 p.m. The game supports the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. Limited edition game-worn Kodiaks jerseys will be auctioned to help the children’s hospital.

Camrose County has been working on this project since December 2014, and two open houses have been held to date. The Final Draft Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Land Use Bylaw (LUB) have been updated based on feedback from residents, businesses, Steering Committee, County departments, and County Council. HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ME? The vision, goals and regulations within the MDP and LUB dictate how you, and your neighbours, can use their land in the future. These documents will help shape the community and how it will look in the future. Driver suffers stroke at intersection January 17

A 29-year-old Camrose man was arrested on four outstanding warrants for his arrest for failing to appear in court and a theft charge. He has since been released on bail to face the charge in Camrose court. A patrol officer stopped a

motorist and found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol. The 18-year-old woman driver was noticeably intoxicated and she was arrested for impaired driving and provided samples of her breath that were double the legal limit. The woman was charged with impaired

driving and driving with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg per cent and released to face the charges in Camrose court. Patrol officers, EMS and Camrose Fire responded to an injury collision at the intersection of 53 Street and 48 Avenue as one of the occu-

pants had suffered a stroke while driving through the intersection. The vehicle made contact with the side guard rails and rolled onto its side, coming to a stop. Camrose Fire Department had to cut off the

roof of the vehicle in order to access the occupants. A woman passenger suffered minor injuries and the male driver was transported to Edmonton Hospitals for medical attention as a result of the stroke.

Help the Vikings make some noise for mental health By Murray Green

Student-athletes across the province and mental health advocates in Alberta are teaming up to reduce stigma related to mental illness, and promote mental health and wellness. Augustana sports teams are backing the program with several events to support the Make Some Noise for Mental Health campaign, which promotes mental health awareness on postsecondary campuses. The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) has partnered with Canadian Mental Health Association Alberta Division to implement a conference-wide awareness campaign. “We are going to have a photo booth at every game, so fans can take as many photos as they can. We will have props available and the photos will appear on social media,” said Rob Hunt, Augustana venue coordinator. “We will have mental health sayings posted and have a place where people can add their comments, or share thoughts on mental health.” Those using the hashtag Make Some Noise for Mental Health and Go Vikings Go together will be entered into a draw for a Vikings prize package. This is open to students and community fans who attend the games. “Each fan will be given a noise maker to Make Some Noise for Mental Health and cheer on the Vikings,” added Hunt. By involving studentathletes, Make Some Noise for Mental Health is intended to encourage empathy, understanding and open mindedness, as well as promote resources and supports

available on campuses and communities.” Members of the Vikings will be participating in the semicolon project. “Players put a semicolon on their wrists to remind everyone of an author that was going to end a sentence and then chose not to,” said Hunt. “The author represents a person and the semicolon represents their life. We will have a booth set up so people can make their own.” The campaign was created and implemented by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans

in January of 2015. The Trojan Outreach Program won a national 2015 community service award for its efforts. “I got involved because I wanted to raise awareness and help people out in a positive way,” said Jocelyn Wynnyk, SAIT Trojans women’s hockey player, who participated in the inaugural event. The program runs until Feb. 13 with 17 ACAC member institutions in 11 communities. “ACAC member institutions collectively embraced this opportunity to expand upon the very successful pilot campaign conducted by

SAIT last year,” said Mark Kosak, CEO of the ACAC. “This is an important health issue that directly impacts the very community we serve on our campuses. Studentathletes are viewed as role models and leaders and it was deemed that their participation could have a greater influence on creating awareness and reducing the stigma of mental health issues.” The campaign will be promoted through studentled, on-campus activities and highlighted at the ACAC members’ regular season home games for various

sports, including volleyball, basketball and hockey. “Make Some Noise for Mental Health links student-athletes to a cause that resonates with all Albertans,” said David Grauwiler, executive director, Canadian Mental Health Association Alberta Division. “Across the province thousands of students face the challenges of maintaining mental health as they face the day to day pressures of academic life. CMHA is excited to partner with ACAC to build public awareness of the unique mental health challenges faced by students.” The 17 ACAC members will collaborate with the nine CMHA regional offices and one provincial CMHA office to connect those experiencing mental illness and those who are impacted by mental illness with the support they need. “This is also a reminder that we have free services on campus such as counseling, student chaplaincy, residence services, as well as a mental health office in downtown Camrose. There are lots of services for people to go to in Camrose if they need assistance,” added Hunt. Visit the Canadian Mental Health Alberta Division at www.mymentalhealth.ca for more information, including student services. On Jan. 22, the Augustana Vikings will hold an awareness event during the Grande Prairie and Vikings basketball games at 6 and 8 p.m. Members of the Camrose chapter of the CMHA will be attendance at the games.
