kicks off Friday, February 12th
with the Canadian film, Eadweard, a drama about 19th century photographer Eadweard Muybridge who is considered by many to be the godfather of cinema thanks to his pioneering motion-capture techniques. The film’s director, Kyle Rideout, and producer, Josh Epstein, will be in attendance for a Q & A following the screening. Festival goers are encouraged to wear the traditional black and white attire on Opening Night, anything from tuxes to t-shirts. Talented local performers will also be on hand to provide musical interludes between the films. Seats for seniors Andrukow Group Solutions Incorporated (AGSI) and the Rose City Curling Club have joined together to provide seats for area senior citizens in the ‘AGSI Senior Skip’s Section’ for the morning and afternoon weekday draws at the Boston Pizza Cup men’s provincial curling finals Feb. 10 to 14 in Camrose. As one of Alberta’s premiere curling events, the Boston Pizza Cup offers an opportunity to not only see some of Canada’s best curlers in action, but also an arena to give back to the community and ensure that everyone has a chance to take in the action. Select seats in sections A, B, and C at the EnCana Arena have been donated towards the initiative with support from Andrukow Group Solutions for senior citizens in lodges, extended care facilities, and from surrounding communities to share in the excitement of the games for free. The ‘AGSI Senior Skip’s Section’ will be available for the morning and afternoon draws on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. “We have a longstanding partnership with the Rose City Curling Club, and when the idea came up to give Camrose and area senior citizens the chance to come and take in some draws, we both loved the idea,” said AGSI marketing director Keynon Ternovoy. “It’s a way for us to give back to our communities, and we know that there are some pretty avid curling fans that might not otherwise have the chance to get out and see curling of this calibre live.” A limited number of tickets will be available, and are coordinated on a first come, first-served basis. Tickets can be arranged for your senior citizen’s group by contacting Adam Enright, director of seniors and schools, at 780-678-9014. For additional information on the event, please contact Keynon Ternovoy at 780-390-0262 or kternovoy@agsiag.com. AGSI has been serving clients in central Alberta for over 35 years. With 17 AGSI and Partner locations and an experienced staff of agronomic consultants, AGSI is living up to its promise of “Making agriculture, our clients and our people better, stronger and proud of their profession.”

Team Erickson or Team Yablonski will play the rink skipped by Charley Thomas, who had the World Junior Champion team in 2006 and 2007. from the Crestwood Curling Club and The Glencoe Curling Club. Team Sallows or Team Hansen will play the rink skipped by Brendan Bottcher, the 2002 World Junior Men’s Champion. Warawa receives local support at BP Cup
Tom Sallows rink consists of third Jordan Steinke, skip Tom Sallows, second Mark Pillsworth and lead Kendall Warawa. By Murray Green
Kendall Warawa will be returning to Camrose with plenty of home town encouragement as he competes in the Boston Pizza Cup curling provincials Feb. 10 to 14. “I am beyond excited because the area is where I grew up and learned to curl. It brings back a lot of memories and connections with people I haven’t seen for a couple of years,” said Warawa. “It’s great for my mom and dad because they don’t have to travel far to see me curl.” He will never forget where he honed his skills as a young curler. “I learned how to love the game at Augustana. I always had a new team every year and my lead in particular, I had to teach how to curl,” explained Warawa. “Maybe that’s why I got into the profession of teaching too; I liked teaching people to love the game the way I do. I like helping with skill development.” The former Hay Lakes and Augustana Vikings curler joined Team Sal-
lows (Tom Sallows, Jordan Steinke and Mark Pillsworth) two years ago to take a run at the provincial title, and again this year in the EnCana Arena. “I was curling with Matt Brown from NAIT and curled against Jordan from MacEwan and Mark from Grande Prairie. We curled against each other in the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) and decided we should make a team. We knew each other over a long time by competing against each other. Jordan knew Tom from Grande Prairie and things kept rolling from there. Tom was asked to be the fifth man for Team Canada.” Sallows trains with Team Canada and he often brings back drill and practice ideas to his team as they reach for a higher level. “Physically we can compete with any team. The edge for other teams is that they have been there for awhile. Seeing a sports phycologist and training mentally is important to us. We
don’t fear any team now,” said Warawa. He skipped the Augustana men’s team for four years and curled five years where he went to provincials for three years. He came home from college provincials with a silver and two bronze medals, and from nationals with a bronze. “That was special for me because my brother Wyatt was playing with me that year,” he said. Warawa teaches junior and senior high science and woodworking, and is head of the senior high curling programs. “Three years ago, the year before I came, the curling rink burned down,” he said. “They just finished building a new rink this spring, so I’m excited about that too. My first year here the girl’s team qualified for provincials and they won silver. That was special because we had to travel just to have a practice. They developed a passion for the game.” On his new team, Warawa takes advantage of his sweeping skills as the
lead. Last year at provincials in Wainwright, he won the coveted Bo Davidiuk award as the best sweeper and sportsmanship. “To win that award in my first appearance at men’s provincials was an honour,” he said. “It is nice to be in the same company as Marc Kennedy.” Winning provincials is never easy. “Anybody can get hot and win and that is why we play the games,” he said. “The initial seeding is to rank everybody. The top four teams are going to be good, but we feel we can beat them. History shows it could be anybody’s provincials. “I take everything as a challenge. I saw as a skip how important it was for the lead to make good shots. That’s why I spent time with our leads at Augustana, because it was important and now I am using that knowledge in my curling as a lead. That is my challenge – to improve. The other thing is to keep our team loose. I’m excited to represent my area, as well as my team.”

Constable Rolfe named Top Cop By Murray Green
The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club has named Camrose Police Service Const. Matt Rolfe as the third recipient of the Top Cop award. He will be presented with the award at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino on Saturday, Feb. 27. The public is invited to join the community celebration with a supper and program. Constable Matt Rolfe is a strong community builder who focuses on assisting the youth of our community. Const. Rolfe is a 12 year veteran of the Camrose Police Service and is currently in the patrol division. He just completed a tenure with the K9 unit with the police service dog Mishka until she recently retired. The officer enjoys the interaction with youth on a regular basis. In his spare time he also chooses to mentor the youth of our community in a variety of ways. He has provided K9 demonstrations for youth, coordinated ride-a-longs and has attended schools with the dog to meet and speak with children of various grades and ages. As an on-ice hockey official he has volunteered time and knowledge as an off-ice supervisor for young officials to aide and mentor them in the development of their officiating skills. He also volunteered with the MS Society, Camrose Women’s Shelter Society (Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes), Charity Checkstop, Free the Finest event, Alberta Junior
Hockey League, an initiation hockey team (as coach), The Black and Blue Campaign, and a Habitat for Humanity build. Const. Rolfe has mentored Camrose Kodiaks hockey players and received approval from the Camrose Police Service to create a yearly Camrose Police Service Citizenship Award to present to a player. He has taken the initiative to recognize players who exemplify
good citizenship as demonstrated by excellent behaviour that follows positive values. The Kiwanis Club, along with those who nominated Const. Rolfe, recognize the value of building good habits in our youth. Tickets are available at the UPS Store, by calling Weston Voytechek at 780672-8199, or Ivan Nesdoly at 780-781-4400.

REFLECTIONS
Boden spreads distracted driving message
by Bonnie Hutchinson Eyes of Love
This week is one of my favourite issues of the Camrose Booster – the one with little one-inch Valentine messages sprinkled throughout. It’s fun to read them – to see how people express affection in ten words or less, and also to see if I recognize any of the people. I appreciate the idea of a day in which we make a point of expressing our love to those who are precious to us. *** Whenever I think about Valentine’s Day, and expressing love, I remember an interview in which author Toni Morrison talked about how we express love to children. She said that when her children were young, she really wanted to be a good mother who made sure her children were cared for. As part of that care, whenever she looked at her children, the first thing she did was check to make sure that their faces were clean, their clothes were presentable, their socks matched, and so on. One day she realized two things. First, whenever she looked at her children, in her very first glance she was looking for flaws. That realization made her uncomfortable. The second realization shocked her. She realized that when her children looked back at her, she was always frowning. The expression on her face looked like she thought something was wrong with them. Because of her most frequent first facial expression, they believed that she disapproved of them. On the day she had that realization, she made a resolution. From that point forward, whenever she saw her children – or anyone else – she made sure that, before she did anything else, she would first look at them with eyes of love. *** On the day I heard that interview, I had similar shocking realizations. I wondered how often I look at people I treasure with eyes of distractedness or irritation. I wondered if my first facial expression creates an impression that they are not precious to me. That was uncomfortable to contemplate. I made a similar resolution – that my first look at people I treasure would be with eyes of love. I’m not there yet. I do not always remember. On cranky days, I’m not even sure I want to remember. But most of the time, I hold the intention that my first look at people I treasure will be with eyes of love. *** The practice has the potential for expansion. Gandhi said, “It is easy enough to be friendly to my friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.” I’m definitely not there yet! But perhaps in February, on Valentine’s Day, we could experiment. As well as letting the precious people in our lives know we appreciate them, we could – just to see if we could do it – see if in our first glance at everyone we see, we could look with friendly eyes. And if we wanted to go for the gusto, we could experiment. We could experiment with whether we could actually, in our first glances, look at others with eyes of love. Not romantic love or family love, but Agape – in a “love of humanity” state. Couldn’t hurt. And Happy Valentine’s Day, whatever form it takes! *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@ BonnieHutchinson.com If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com
Murray Green, Camrose Booster John and Shauna Boden put together a moving visual presentation about the dangers of texting and distracted driving to use as a positive tool for school students. John has reached students as far away as the Northwest Territories. He will be speaking to Bawlf School in February and is planning a trip back to the NWT. By Murray Green
John Boden is excited to spread his message about distracted driving to new drivers across western Canada. John, from just east of Camrose, was injured by a distracted teen driver back in 2007. After about eight years he decided it was time to create a visual awareness program to share where he and his wife Shauna talk about the accident at schools and in surrounding communities about the dangers of not paying attention to the road while driving. The accident, with a teenager texting while driving, changed his life forever, but he has found a new road in life. In late October, for the first time since the collision left him an incomplete quadriplegic, John spoke to groups of students about the dangers of distracted driving. “I was invited to go to the Northwest Territories (through their transportation department in a program called Drive Alive) and speak to school students, sometimes as many as 250, explained Boden. “I never intended to be a public speaker, but people kept asking me to share my story. “I got a sense that when we spoke the students were focused on every word. There were students that looked like they were very emotional about the topic. The event wasn’t seen by students as an opportunity to get out of class for a while, but as a learning opportunity. That made me feel good about the presentation.” After the event, he was greeted by many students who were amazed by his forgiveness. “I don’t dwell on the past because I can’t change that,” he said. “The students at the school made me feel like they understood and could change their outlook on life, to being more positive.” John challenged students to put themselves in his position, imagining how
their parents and siblings would have to cope with providing care around the clock for many years. During his talks he shows photographs of his mangled vehicle. Shauna speaks about assisting him in her every spare moment and how you can’t take even simple tasks for granted. “I can speak from the heart and memories, and don’t need a prepared speech,” said John. “I share my positive outlook and try to share some humour with others. People often ask me how I can be so positive, but I don’t look back. I concentrate on the future. I want to continue telling my story about texting and distracted driving and perhaps it can save a life.” After the presentation he wows the audience with an example of his determination. “I do a demonstration of how I can stand,” he said. “It shows them how life can change in a split second and how long it takes to get back what we take for granted.” Another trip to the NWT is in the planning stage. Since John’s accident it has become illegal to use handheld devices including phones and GPS navigators, while driving. John plans to share his heart-warming story with Battle River School Division students. One session will be with Bawlf School students in February as part of a Self Awareness Day. He plans to add more speaking engagements in the future to share his story with others. His positive outlook on life is very moving. “It is not just about distracted driving, but how to be positive, move forward and not dwell on things you can’t change,” he said. “People ask how can I be so positive, but I don’t have negative feelings towards anyone.” He spent about three months at the Glenrose Hospital in Edmonton after the accident. “I told the staff that I
wanted to walk out of the Glenrose,” said John. “The staff didn’t say much at the time. They were amazed when I did it and said it was one of the first times that they actually got to see someone do it after such an accident. The Glenrose Hospital has asked me to go back and share my story with the staff and patients at the Glenrose auditorium. I just haven’t set a date yet.” His willingness to talk about his life was encouraged by his family last summer. You see, John has always anticipated the days that he would walk each of his three daughters down the aisle when they got married. The incident put that dream in jeopardy. However, he succeeded in reaching his goal last August when he walked one of his daughters down the aisle in Camrose. All three of his girls were teens when he was injured. “I was determined to be able to walk again and the wedding announcement didn’t change anything, but it gave me another goal to reach,” he admitted. The wedding announcement a year prior further inspired his intense two or three times a week rehabilitation sessions at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose. He can now stand for a short time period, about 10 minutes. “The staff and I worked very hard on me being able to walk down the aisle,” John said. “It was powerful to my family and friends when I walked and I received a standing ovation at the reception. It’s a day that I won’t forget.” It also led to his idea of sharing the message of distracted driving. He wants to encourage students to help spread the message to their parents about the dangers of driving while distracted. Contact John at jbboden@hotmail.com for more information on how to arrange for him to speak to your school, or organization.

Local filmmaker screening at Nordlys for second time By Laurel Nadon
The Nordlys Film and Arts Festival is set to welcome back local filmmaker and director Hans Olson. In 2014 Nordlys screened The Auctioneer, and this year will showcase Olson’s first feature length dramatic work, Figurine. The Nordlys runs at the Bailey Theatre from Feb. 12 to 14, with Figurine screening in the afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 13. Figurine, which is filmed in Olson’s distinctive observational-documentary style, was shot in Edmonton in the fall of 2013 at real locations with a cast of firsttime actors. “We were after a feeling of authenticity,” said Olson, who grew up near Armena. “We wanted real people acting as themselves. I was really excited to do a fiction project that was inspired by a documentary approach.” The film follows the life of Karin, a woman who leads a quiet life working at a truck wash and ushering parttime at the hockey arena. Her solitary routine is broken when she meets James, a truck driver seeking work in the city. As autumn gives

way to winter, Karin opens herself up to the possibility of romance. The film received its first screening at the end of August, 2015. Olson shared that oddly enough, the idea for the film took shape at an Oilers game.
“I was struck by the image of a solitary usher, passed by and ignored by the crowd,” Olson said. “The script slowly grew out of this character of Karin. I was very interested to make a quiet drama with a documentary approach to produc-
tion. I met the lead actor, Kelly Goetz, while she was selling her paintings at the Whyte Avenue Art Walk. I’m really grateful that she agreed to take the leap.” For Olson, it’s gratifying to see his films screened at the festival that found its
roots in the Pretty Hill Festival on his family farm. “It’s a little bit surreal, but also feels like coming full circle to an audience that I’m really familiar with,” Olson said. “Nordlys has played such a big part in me wanting to make films in the first place so it’s an honour to get to screen for a hometown audience.” Olson will be unable to attend Nordlys this year as he has accepted an invitation to participate in Berlinale Talents, a seminar program at the Berlin International Film Festival. Kyle Armstrong, the film’s producer, will be in attendance. “All of us at Nordlys are very proud to feature the work of Hans Olson,” said Steven Hansen, Nordlys festival board member. “He’s won awards as a filmmaker and been successful in his own right. It’s great to acknowledge and feature the work of an award-winning, local filmmaker.” Information on the other films that will be featured at the Nordlys is available at www.nordlysfestival.com. Festival passes are available in person at the Bailey Theatre or on the website.
Vancouver filmmakers share Godfather of Cinema By Laurel Nadon
It was while acting in the play “Studies in Motion: The Hauntings of Eadweard Muybridge” alongside Josh Epstein that Vancouver actor and director Kyle Rideout was first inspired to learn more about the man called the “godfather of cinema”. “When you’re living in a story, you see it every day under a microscope,” Rideout said in a phone interview from Vancouver. “There wasn’t a film on him and I thought that was so odd because he’s the godfather of film.” The Canadian-made drama Eadweard is the first feature film for Rideout, who has previously directed two short films, and he is excited to present it at the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, Feb. 12. Both director/writer Rideout and producer/writer Epstein will participate in a question and answer session following the film. “It was like making a really, really big short film. It was a pretty awesome, amazing, magical shoot,” Rideout recalled of the 2014 shoot in Vancouver. “We had over 600 period costumes. We had goats, llamas, horses, dogs, nude people, children, visual effects and multiple locations. We were very ambitious and wanted to make a film that stood out.” Many consider Muybridge to be the godfather
Photo submitted Michael Eklund brought the character of Eadweard Muybridge to life in the film Eadweard. Director/writer Kyle Rideout and producer/writer Josh Epstein will attend a question and answer session following the film’s screening at the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival on Friday, Feb. 12.
of cinema thanks to his pioneering motion-capture techniques. A cloudy moment in his history is the murder of his wife’s supposed lover. Muybridge was acquitted as the court saw it as a justifiable homicide. Today, Muybridge is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras and stop-motion photographs to capture what the human eye could not distinguish as separate movements. He famously proved a horse can fly with photographs that show a horse lifts all four hooves at one point in the action
of running. He also used zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip used in cinematography. In an effort to be truthful to Eadweard’s story, Rideout and Epstein travelled to the University of Pennsylvania where they saw his camera and pored over letters he had written. “It’s an independent period film. Every person on it was working as hard as they could. Having Michael Eklund lead the ship, he really carved out the clear character of Eadweard,” Rideout said. “It’s such a
collaborative process. I’m an actor and that’s a collaborative process as well. You meet up with everyone else with their ideas and you pick the best one and that’s just an incredible process.” Eadweard has screened at film festivals around the world. In addition to winning five Leo Awards, it won audience awards at the Nashville Film Festival, Maui Film Festival and the Rhode Island Film Festival. “We’re thrilled to have Kyle and Josh join us,” said Steven Hansen, Nordlys festival board member. “One of the things that sets
Nordlys apart is having special guests be part of the festival and allow our audience to mix and mingle with them and ask questions about the films.” Rideout said that he enjoys engaging with the audience after they’ve watched the film. “After the film, people are curious about this character,” Rideout said. “I’m flattered that they’re interested to learn more about him.” Festival passes are available in person at the Bailey Theatre or on the website at www.nordlysfestival.com.

On the Other Hand… When were you recruited? In my experience they are everywhere. They are new recruits and old recruits. They come from every walk of life, and every race and both genders, and all ages. They are at every meeting and conference, especially those gatherings that are more formally organized than casual meetings we share. They take their cue from the 1944 Simple Sabotage Field Manual published by the Office of Strategic Services (now known as the CIA). They are easily recognized as they carefully follow the protocols highlighted here: Insist always on following proper “channels”. Make speeches: talk frequently and at great length. Refer everything to committee for further study. Keep bringing up irrelevant issues. Haggle over precise wording. Return to matters already decided on. Advocate “caution” to avoid haste and delay decision making. Argue that the decision should be made by a different person or group. It is hard to think of a meeting where they were not present; where one or two or three of these techniques were not in evidence. At some meetings all eight seemed to be active and not all by just one person, ultimately sabotaging the meeting. And so I am left to wonder, “When were you recruited?” I am sure that you, like me, have left many meetings frustrated at a lack of progress; and wondering how this happened and what was the purpose? Why decisions and actions that seemed so obvious to us were thwarted, stymied, stalled, or stopped. Maybe you leave those meetings and like me are wondering, “When were you recruited?” Accomplishments die under the weight of numerous admonitions. Decisions decay due to countless delays. Progress is postponed in the efforts at precision in wording (less so today as the common vernacular supersedes grammatical rules-LOL). The ability to get work done gets lost in the question “Who is in charge?” The relevance of our work is tangled up in repetition and review of what we thought was already decided (like Fagin we say, “I think I better think it through again.” Our individual commitment to the task at hand drowns in a sea of committees. And I am left to wonder, “When were you recruited?” The recruiters are subtle. You may not even know when, where, why or how you were recruited. You may even deny that you have been recruited, I know I would. But the preponderance of evidence leads to no other conclusion than that they are among us, and they are active, and they are succeeding. And so I leave meetings wondering to myself, “When were you recruited?” On the other hand, the next time I’m in a meeting where there are no results, I’ll try to de-enlist from subtle sabotage techniques we’ve all perfected since 1944. I do not remember being recruited, but there is evidence I might be one of them, too. Happy and meaningful meetings to all of us!
Police involved in stand-off with male subject By Lori Larsen Camrose Police Service members were involved in a stand-off on Feb. 3 with a 32-year-old male subject wanted for Uttering Threats. After receiving notification from the RCMP indicating the man was believed to be in Camrose, police located the subject at approximately 4 p.m. sitting in a van parked in the 7-11 parking lot located on 51 Street and 48 Avenue. Police members contained the vehicle (van) and ordered the male to exit.
The male, who was observed with a handgun in his possession, refused direction given by police members so was continuously monitored. “We were faced with a potentially dangerous situation with an individual who was quite agitated,” said Deputy Chief Foreman of Camrose Police Service. The area surrounding the vehicle was secured and communication was established with the male occupant.
At approximately 6 p.m. the male subject tossed out the handgun and a few minutes later surrendered to the police. Police took the subject into custody and an investigation is continuing. “Through a lot of good work on behalf of the members at the scene we (the police) were able to look after that situation satisfactorily and we were quite happy with the outcome,” added Deputy Chief Foreman.
Courtland’s Hope fundraising gala
Melanie Patterson of Courtland’s Hope Foundation sold the first ticket to the fundraising gala to City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer. The event will be held on Feb. 20. By Murray Green
Courtland’s Hope Foundation is about “Helping Kids Be Kids.” This charity and its founder, Melanie Patterson, are committed to providing medical equipment and services for disabled children. “Often the equipment that will enrich a child’s life is expensive. In 2015, we helped six families. My goal is to help 25 families next year,” said Patterson. “Most of the items we have purchased have been because a family could not afford their portion of Alberta’s cost share program.” To help Courtland’s Hope Foundation in reaching that lofty goal, the foundation is holding a fundraising gala at the Norsemen Inn on Saturday, Feb. 20 starting at 5 p.m. “We have a beautiful evening planned, so I’m hoping the community embraces it. Entertainer Jordan Leden of the Bailey Buckaroos will be performing a set for us,” said Patterson. As well as a roast beef dinner, the family event will feature silent and live auctions. The live auction will be led by Battle River-Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson. “We have tickets to West Side Story at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, tickets to the Sleeping Beauty ballet at the Lougheed Performing
Arts Centre, and large painting by Sharleen Guillemette, plus many more items. It is wonderful that people are starting to donate things to our fundraiser and take notice of what we are doing,” said Patterson. As a mom, trying to keep up with medical expenses and working in a tough job, Patterson needed help and didn’t know where to turn. “My husband and I did not have $500 to pay our costshare portion of Courtland’s medical equipment,” she explained. “It occurred to me that other people must be in the same situation. “We want to provide equipment and services that are not covered under government programs. We want to assist with things like bicycles, special equipment and things like horseback riding lessons. “Things like bicycles are not deemed a necessity, but what child doesn’t want a bicycle? I think it should be part of everyone’s childhood. Courtland’s Hope Foundation is developing an equipment lending library, wherein we can refurbish equipment and bicycles to make them available for the next family. We don’t very many items now, but we can build up our store of items.”
Patterson’s son, Courtland, has a rare form of cerebral palsy. He is the inspiration behind the Foundation’s formation three years ago. It started as a vision, then she went on to find people of like vision to be board members. At first, Patterson held hot dog barbecues and then received funding from Augustana’s Rocky Road Ice Cream Fantasy event a couple of years ago. “Now we need to fundraise again and that is what this event is about,” she said. “In order to meet our goal for 2016, we will need to raise $13,000 at our Banquet of Hope.” Tickets for the fundraiser are available at eventbrite.ca. Patterson sees many children in this area whose families need financial assistance for their child’s medical equipment. “These children often have mobility issues and that is the main area we are focusing on. It is our intention to expand to help children in other areas as well,” she said. Parents needing financial assistance regarding equipment for their disabled kids, can contact the foundation by clicking on the Need Assistance tab on the website at www.courtlandshope.org or email@courtlandshope.org for more information.

Canucks edge Kodiaks in overtime By Murray Green
The Calgary Canucks broke a 1-1 deadlock with an early overtime goal against the Camrose Kodiaks on Feb. 2 in the EnCana Arena. Calgary netted the only tally in the opening period. Ryan Rebelato garnered the equalizer in the second frame when he was set up by Stefan Danielson and Mackenzie Bauer. After no scoring in the third, overtime was needed to determine the outcome. Goalie Patrick Gora made 16 of 18 saves, while Camrose had 36 shots on the Canucks’ net. Drumheller Dragons were on fire as they burned the Kodiaks 6-2 in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Drumheller scored first on a power play with under two minutes played in the game. Camrose recovered with a tally on a T.J. Brown marker before they ran into penalty trouble again. The Dragons netted another goal with the man advantage to take a 2-1 lead into the dressing room. In the second frame, Drumheller scored twice with another early power play. They added two more in the third before Kodiaks defenceman Stefan Danielson replied. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 15 of 19 shots prior to Brodan Salmond coming on in relief and turning away 16 of 18 shots. Camrose fired 40 shots at the Dragons’ net.
Ethan James of the Kodiaks tries a wrap around against the Olds Grizzlys.
The previous night Camrose edged the Dragons 4-3. The Kodiaks built up a 3-0 lead, but had to score late to break a 3-3 tie. Captain Cam Gotaas netted the winner with Paul Lovsin, Angus Scott and Mackenzie Bauer notching markers in the first period. Gora was blitzed with 56 shots and he made 53 saves. Camrose fired 43 at the Drumheller net. Bear facts
Netminder Brodan Salmond was called up for the remainder of the season to the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. “We are excited for Bro-
dan as he has a great opportunity with Kelowna,” said Kodiaks general manager and coach Boris Rybalka. The Rockets lost their 20 year old goaltender due to injury. “The Rockets are a great organization with a proven history of success,” said Rybalka. The Kodiaks are currently on a five game road swing due to the men’s curling provincials. The next home game is on Friday, Feb. 19, against the south division leading Brooks Bandits in the retro game in the Max McLean Arena.
“The atmosphere will be amazing and the game will be too. The Kodiaks will be wearing a special jersey for the night and fans will be able to bid on these jerseys and take them home to the highest bidder,” said Rybalka. On Saturday, Feb. 20, at 5:30 p.m., at the Camrose Regional Exhibition, it is the Kodiaks’ annual dinner and auction with special entertainment provided by Williams and Ree. Then on Sunday, Feb. 21, the Kodiaks host the Bonnyville Pontiacs at 2 p.m. in the EnCana Arena.

Letters to the Editor 48th Avenue Bridge
(This letter was originally published in the Feb. 2 issue of The Camrose Booster. It is being printed again to include new information). The 48th avenue bridge replacement is a project that is needed sooner than later as this infrastructure asset is nearing the end of its life. The extension of the merge lane going west from 51 Street is also much needed as it currently creates a bottle neck during peak traffic times. All of these are necessary capital expenditures and, of course, come at a cost. The cost of $5 million to replace the bridge and increase the traffic lanes is substantial in itself. Is it prudent to add $2 million to this project for a pedestrian underpass? Will the 50 people that will use this underpass a day justify this cost just to save some steps to the traffic lights? Some would say yes we do need to have the pedestrian underpass, it is safer for crossing 48 Avenue as the traffic in the city of Camrose appears to be increasing year over year. I argue that these are not major issues in this city. A comment heard at a City council meeting in the past is very relevant: “we have rush minutes, not rush hours.”
In addition to the incremental cost, what will this addition of the underpass mean to the construction completion timeline? Will it mean that traffic will have to be completely diverted from going past the downtown district for an extended period of time? Will it mean 100 per cent closure of this main thoroughfare through our city for months versus weeks? What will the impact on business be? These are questions that bear asking and reviewing. Nice-to-have – but is it really necessary based on these price tags? After driving around the city for the past months I honestly believe that the $7 million could be better spent fixing or repaving a lot of streets or avenues, or even the ring road in the city of Camrose. Louis Hagel, Camrose Want not a need
I refer to Louis Hagel’s letter regarding this project, and would suggest that the pedestrian underpass is most definitely a want that we can not afford, and definitely not a need. Regardless of where one approaches 48 Avenue on the pathway system, there is a point where one can cross 48 Avenue
protected by traffic signals within 50 to 75 metres. When I am out walking for exercise that is of no consequence! The usage of the underpass cannot possibly justify the extra cost in my mind, when considering all our other municipal problems that urgently need fixing. However, there is one issue that does not appear to have been aired in public. That is the paramount issue of public safety. The underpass will become a hangout for all the druggies in town to use or to deal drugs in relative safety. It will also become a haven for muggers and unsavoury gangs of ruffians, and anyone entering the “tunnel” has only one choice – give us your money or swim for your life! The bridge and road improvements are warranted but the pedestrian underpass is a gross waste of money. Spend the extra $2 million where it will benefit more than just a few pleasure walkers. W. Smith, Camrose

Camrose taxi token program receiving a warm reception By Dan Jensen
The City of Camrose will be taking over the administration of the taxi token (subsidy) program. City manager Malcolm Boyd told Committee of the Whole council Feb. 2 that they will be distributing the tokens at City Hall and forwarding the data on where they are being used to the Camrose Transit Advisory Committee for program evaluation. Approximately 13,000 tokens have been distributed since the program was implemented last fall. “The current consumption is about 200 tokens per month,” said Boyd. “There are two or three agencies we could add to the
list to bring it to about 250 per month.” Valued at $4 a piece, the tokens can be redeemed for discounted rides at participating Camrose taxi companies. City councillor Max Lindstrand told council that the taxi token program was well received at a recent meeting of seven Camrose agencies that receive the tokens. “Many of them (agencies) spoke quite favourably about the program,” said Lindstrand. Lack of buy-in Not all the taxi companies are on board with the program. “There are some problems and one of the things I would like to see
happen is some negotiations with the taxi companies in town,” said Lindstrand. “One is very supportive of the program, one is totally against the program and the third one is luke warm to it. I would like to bring all the companies on board.” Lindstrand agreed with the way that the program is set up. “The agencies themselves define what the needs are, who should get the tokens, and on what basis they get them,” he said. “I think that is appropriate because no one knows better than the agencies themselves who needs these vouchers.” Taxi service Councillor Bill Sears noted that while the program is making a difference
with those who need it, the quality of the service provided by the taxi cabs is not always good. “I think we really have to work with the cab companies and the cab drivers to figure out how to make the system better because the cabs are the key,” he said. “If the cab companies don’t want to be a part of this it is going to be hard for us to make it a go. “Evaluation is really important: evaluation from the users, evaluation from the user groups, evaluation from the cabs and the cab drivers.” Boyd said he is concerned about the quality of the taxis and the inclusiveness (or the lack thereof)
of the token program and suggested that a review of the city taxi bylaw may help clear up some of the questions. Councillor Lindstrand expressed concern that the level of service provided by the taxi companies may decline as the taxi program becomes more popular. “That is something we have to keep an eye on too,” he said. “If the response time goes from 15 to minutes to an hour and 15 minutes that is not a good situation. Yet apparently, in peak times it is a problem getting the cabs on a timely basis.” Taxi drivers are able to redeem the tokens at Vision Credit Union.
Churchmice preparing production of My Fair Lady By Murray Green
The Churchmice Players have come a long way since practicing lines in a church basement. Members have been on several stages since their humble beginnings. This year’s production of My Fair Lady will be the group’s first musical performance in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre after last year’s production of The Three Musketeers. The show runs Feb. 25 to 28. My Fair Lady is based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The local production is directed by Sylvia Lyon. “I’m excited because the audience will be able to see so much better. When it is a flat surface it is hard to see everything,” said Lyon. “The sets are the biggest challenge because they have to be double the size of what we have done in the past. For the cast, it is nice to have more space.” The disadvantage of moving to a larger facility is a reduction in the number of shows. “We have to pay for every night the set is up, even if we are not using it,” said Lyon. “Sometimes in the past, people listen for reviews and then decide if they should go the following weekend. This year we hope people trust that the show is good and they come out right away because we only have one weekend. Musicals usually draw good crowds.” Churchmice Players will be holding five performances. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Matinees on Saturday and Sunday start at 1:30 p.m. “This is a very costume oriented show with the ball, so we had to have a lot of fancy formal dresses. This show is very witty and people will enjoy the comedy as well as the music,” added Lyon. The play has a cast of 30:
Dave McDougall plays professor Higgins and Ashley Kambeitz plays Eliza Doolittle in Camrose’s local drama club’s production of My Fair Lady.
13 in the orchestra and 10 to 15 people behind the stage. “It’s a lot of people, but it is a lot of fun too,” said Lyon. “My Fair Lady is a classic and the play is known for its wit. It has songs that everyone can relate to and enjoy. We have a wonderful cast and they all get along so well. We had to teach the men how to waltz, which was a challenge for some of them. I love it when we get young people coming in and staying with us for years. They don’t get the lead the first year, but they work to it. It is a good family activity.” Dave McDougall plays Professor Higgins and Ashley Kambeitz is Eliza, both of whom are main characters in the local production. The story is about flower girl Eliza Doolittle, who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetics specialist, so that she may pass as a lady. The original Broadway, London and film versions all starred Rex Harrison. “I’m a bit of a snob and self-involved at first, just teaching the proper way to speak,” said McDougall, on
his character. “He uses a lot of words to say very little. Rex Harrison wasn’t a great singer, so he talked his way through songs. I sing more than he did.” The musical’s 1956 Broadway production was a momentous hit, setting a record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals. It has been called the perfect musical. “I’m really excited to be able to perform at the Lougheed Centre. It will be a play that will be portrayed the way it should be in a theatre,” added McDougall, the drama teacher at the Camrose Composite High School. “It’s fun and rewarding to be able to be on stage with former students, such as Ashley. I always hope that students, if they don’t make a career out of it, will be involved in community theatre. I’ve worked with Don Hutchinson for close to 30 years and now with his family. It is a way of giving back to the community.”
The story opens on a rainy night in Edwardian London with opera patrons waiting under the arches of Covent Garden for cabs. Eliza runs into a young man called Freddy. She admonishes him for spilling her bunches of violets in the mud. She does manage to sell some flowers to an older gentlemen, Colonel Pickering, but is soon angered when she finds out another gentlemen, Henry Higgins, is copying down her speech. Higgins explains that he studies phonetics and can identify anyone’s origin by their accent. He laments Eliza’s dreadful speech and explains his theory that it is poor speech, not looks or money that separates social classes. Before departing with Pickering, Higgins drops a large amount of change in Eliza’s basket. With the unexpected windfall, Eliza and her friends wonder what it would be like to live a comfortable life. Eliza decides the way to transform her life is to learn to speak proper English and decides to ask Higgins to give her lessons. Higgins
declares that in six months he can turn Eliza into a lady. Intrigued by the declaration, Pickering offers to pay for Eliza’s lessons and she moves into the Higgins house to begin her transformation. After months of frustration where everyone is just about ready to give up, Eliza suddenly recites “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain” in perfect upper class style. Higgins and Pickering then decide the time is right to try out the new Eliza in public. Eliza’s first public appearance is at the Ascot Racecourse and she makes a good impression, but later shocks everyone with an accidental slip into her coarse Cockney slang. In spite of the slip up, Freddy, who ran into her in the opening scene is smitten with her. Her second appearance is at the annual Embassy Ball, where she dazzles everyone in attendance, including the Queen of Transylvania. After the ball, she flatters Higgins on his triumphant transformation of Eliza, and Higgins expresses his pleasure that the experiment is now over. The episode leaves Eliza feeling used and abandoned. She decides to leave the Higgins residence and finds the still smitten Freddy waiting for her. She and Freddy return to Covent Garden, where her friends do not recognize her with her newly refined bearing. Eliza realizes that she no longer belongs in Covent Garden with her former friends and decides to leave, but first has a chance encounter with her father, Alfred Doolittle, who has had his own transformation to middle class morality with an unexpected inheritance. Back at the Higgins residence, Henry realizes that he’s grown attached to Eliza and misses her dearly, although he could never admit it to her in person. Tickets are available at the Lougheed Centre box office.

Camrose Police Service celebrates 60 years By Lori Larsen Imagine, if you will, a Dodge Crusader two-door police car cruising the mean streets of Camrose back in 1956, the lone officer keeping a constant vigil on a red light mounted on top of a power pole which, when activated, indicated a call to service. On July 1, 1956, Camrose Police Department was formed with Howard Martin as chief. The first members – Chief Martin, Const. Duff Franklin, Const. Charlie Starcheski, Const. Robert Bell, Const. Bob McFeeley and Const. Tom Coultis (still a resident of Camrose) – sported the provincial government brown uniforms as they patrolled the streets for the first few months in their own personal vehicles. “Eventually the Department got its first and only patrol car,” said Camrose crime prevention officer Const. John Fernhout. “We (Camrose Police Service) tried to find the original car (a 1956 Dodge), but couldn’t. Eventually, the same make and model was discovered and it is now used during various events throughout the year, including the BVJ (Big Valley Jamboree) parade and the Show and Shine.” The replica was found in a field near Granum, Alberta and brought back to Camrose where, with funding from some Camrose businesses and help from police members, it was fully restored. In 1963, Chief Martin
retired and the job of heading the Department was taken over by Chief Christianson, who served until 1982. Deputy Chief Duff Franklin then assumed the position of chief until he retired in 1987. Acting as chief until 1988, Inspector Vic Redekopp handed the reins to Bill Bradshaw who was chief until his retirement in 1999. With the retirement of Chief Bradshaw the Camrose Police Service leadership was taken over by then Deputy Chief Chalmers, who remained chief until 2007. On Jan. 1, 2008, Deputy Chief Kambeitz was appointed chief. He remains at the helm today. In 1962, provincial legislation allowed for a police commission to be formed to hold the chief accountable, something it still does to this day. The Camrose Police Station moved from 51 Street and 50 Avenue (a former church) into the upstairs floor of the old post office building. The building was purchased by the City to house City Hall. Citing inadequate facilities Chief Christianson convinced the City to relocate the Service to a location on 49 Street and 49 Avenue. The Service remained there until 1999, undergoing an expansion in 1976. Once again, and due to expanding needs and personnel, the Service was on the move, making one more relocation to the current site on 48 Avenue. Over the years the mem-
bers have fashioned a variety of uniform styles and colours. The uniform changed from the brown to light blue shirts and navy pants bearing a red stripe in 1979. In 1996, the uniforms changed again to the present dark blue shirt and pants. Camrose Police Department became Camrose Police Service in 1990. A little over three years later it became the third police service in Canada to receive accreditation – the first with less than 100 officers. In 1998, the Service received its second accreditation award, followed by its third award in 2001 and fourth in 2004 from the CALEA (Commission for Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies). The fifth accreditation award came in 2007. In 2006, the Service was the first police service in Alberta to be found in compliance with the provincial policing standards. The Service earned three awards in 2010: its sixth accreditation award, a meritorious award (an accredited police agency in excellent standing for over 17 years) and the designation of “Flagship Agency,” given to agencies that show a commitment to providing the best possible service to the community and a high level of professionalism. As well as these awards, Camrose Police Service successfully passed an external review indicating it complied with all applicable provincial
policing standards and provided its community with an exemplary level of service. In 2013, the Service received its seventh accreditation award for meritorious excellence. In late 2014, the Service again successfully passed an external review with an exemplary level of service. From its very inception in 1956, the Service offered the citizens of Camrose the comfort of knowing they had 24-hour policing. The officers were, and still are, trained in criminal, traffic, liquor laws and City bylaws. Unlike the limited resources of the first depart-
ment today’s Service also includes other divisions such as crime prevention, victim services, major crimes unit, a forensic identification section, Police Service dog unit, school resource and officer safety unit. Through all the changes over the past 60 years one factor remains the same. Camrose Police Service is comprised of a group of well trained, professional and dedicated men and women whose mission is to provide the residents of Camrose “Public Safety Through Policing Excellence.” Congratulations Camrose Police Service on the first 60 years and here’s to an equally successful next 60 years.

The Orchard playing at curling event By Murray Green
The Orchard is returning to Camrose. The first time they appeared here was at the Big valley Jamboree. The Orchard is a Canadian country duo made up of singer/songwriters Kasha Anne and Mitch Smith. Their sound can be defined as smooth alternative country, heavy southern blues, folk influences, guitar driven with powerful vocals. They will be appearing in the Rose Garden (foyer of the Max McLean Arena) on Feb. 12 for shows at 5:15 and 9:30 p.m. between draws of the Boston Pizza Cup curling provincials. The Orchard’s sophomore album Georgia features hit singles “She Don’t Play Fair”
The Orchard returns to Camrose for a show between draws.
and “Angel Eyes.” Lyrically, the album paints beautiful portrait-telling stories from all over the map. Kasha and Mitch take pride in playing almost all the
instruments on the album, including guitars, ukuleles and percussion. Recent accolades for The Orchard include opening for some of Canada’s biggest
names in country music such as Dean Brody, George Canyon and Chad Brownlee. The Association of Country Music in Alberta (ACMA) has recognized The Orchard by nominating them for several awards, including Group of The Year, Album of the Year and Fan’s Choice. The Orchard’s debut album, Southern Ground, was released in August 2012 and received rave reviews, including five singles that entered the top 100 on Trax country charts. Currently, The Orchard has been playing shows across Canada. Music and art always come first and The Orchard are constantly writing and creating new sounds for their third album.
Amy Metcalfe performing in Rose Garden By Murray Green
Red Deer’s Amy Metcalfe is one of the newest shining stars in country music. She will be appearing in the Rose Garden (foyer of the Max McLean Arena) between draws of the Boston Pizza Cup provincial curling championship on Feb. 11 at 5:15 and 9:30 p.m. Metcalfe has written over 250 songs herself and co-written with talents such as Byron Hill, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Duane Steele and Phil Madeira. Metcalfe doesn’t allow a day to go by where she isn’t inspired to write. Many of her ideas have come to mind while working with horses, her second job. “It’s a peaceful job and gives you a lot of time to
think and do hard work at the same time,” she said. “The horses don’t mind if I record a voice memo on my phone.” Her debut EP was released in 2015, with six of the seven tracks written on her own. Amy hopes the compilation gives listeners a good sense of who she is as a person.
“This EP is about self discovery whether that be through someone who hurt you, someone you’ve lost, or the person you’ve shaded yourself to be. As a new artist, I’m trying to figure out my place in the mix and this album is a good representation of the last few years of my life,” said Metcalfe. “There are a lot
of question marks in the lyrics. I’ve been blessed to write with so many amazing writers, but I felt like the stuff we wrote was better suited for my second album, allowing room for growth and to show another side of me.” She decided to release a third single to radio that was not from the album. Metcalfe released it as a duet with CCMA Rising Star nominee Tristan Horncastle. The duo performed a song written by Amy and Byron Hill. It hit Billboard’s top 100 for 11 weeks and peaked in the top 50. With a love to perform and be on stage rooted in a 13 year dance career, Amy aspires to impact Canadian Country Music in a big way.

Luis Mario Ochoa Cuban Quartet coming to Performing Arts Centre By Murray Green
The Luis Mario Ochoa Cuban Quartet provides a mixed blend of Cuban and international music at its finest. Ochoa and his band are stopping in at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre for a 8 p.m. show on Friday, Feb. 12. The Luis Mario Ochoa Cuban Quartet is an acoustic group that features music ranging from rumba to samba, bolero to waltz, and son to cha cha, and features Toronto’s leading jazz and world musicians. “I came to Canada in 1990, after spending time in Cuba playing music. I decided to stay and play my music. The music in Cuba was conservative and now things have changed. Everything was clas-
sical and military. I like jazz. I had the privilege of learning jazz and classical music from my dad, so I was able to navigate in both waters,” said Ochoa, in between recording sessions in Miami. “I went to Canada (Toronto) to perform as a trio and I really liked the country and people’s appreciation of good music. I don’t like the cold weather, but I like the quietness and respect Canadians have. Cuba and Americans are known to be loud,” laughed Ochoa. “Canadians are very passionate about the things they love in their heart. Their are many great Canadian musicians. It is a mine of good musicians.” The group was nominated for the 2007 Canadian Latin Jazz Artist of the Year award. Guitarist and
lead vocalist Ochoa leads this ensemble with fire and finesse. “Going to Canada is like going to many countries at once. You can experience a lot of cultures within a few blocks. I play Canadian music because I have been here for 30 years. But, my roots are in Cuban music. It is Cuban music with a tough of jazz,” he added. Ochoa formed the Cuban quartet, which in 2008 released Momentos Cubanos. His music features original and classic Latin American songs and the popular CD reached the number two spot on the world music charts at Earshot Canada. He now has four CDs. However, he is working on three at one. “I’m helping produce an album for someone else as well as mine and one for
the band. I like to be part of other bands and people join in my band too.” Cuba is a land where poets and dreamers, cynics and sages hold sway amid beaches, bays and mountains. Their music defines them, unites them and brings all that is Espirito Cubano to the world. This acoustic quartet features the romantic rumba, the lively samba, the pulsating bolero, the swaying waltz and cha-cha. Be transported as Havana-born Luis Mario Ochoa, performs with his Cuban Quartet. “I look forward in meeting Camrose music fans. I know its cold, so I want to bring a little bit of warmth with Cuban music to the Camrose souls,” he concluded. Tickets are available at the Lougheed box office.

Make a savings plan that involves paying yourself first By Dan Jensen
“Pay yourself first!” “We’ve all heard that piece of advice, but hearing it and actually putting it into practice are two different things. Without a plan which automatically deducts a certain amount from your bank account, saving money can be very difficult. Inevitably, something comes up which will use the funds you have set aside. Many savings accounts are diminished due to what people refer to as “emergency expenditures.” The problem is that people plan backwards. Instead of paying themselves first, he said they pay others first. To paraphrase Parkinson’s Law, expenditures rise to meet income. This means that as your income increases, so does your expenditure. That is what is wrong with believing at some future time you will be able to save, but not now.
Saving takes discipline, but after doing it for a while, it becomes natural. One way to save is to deduct a portion of your salary (say 10 per cent) before spending. Start with a lower amount, and if it feels comfortable, increase the amount later. Another method is to commit yourself to putting away a set sum every day, and at the end of every month, transferring that amount to a savings account or other investment vehicle. Look at your lifestyle and determine whether or not you spend $5 a day on items that are not really needed. You may decide to bag your lunch, instead of always going out. Over a period of 35 years, $5 a day invested at six per cent, compounded annually, would grow to $216,675. A favorite saving method for many investors is to put aside 10 per cent of the money spent on each
and every item. The government already takes five per cent in the way of Goods and Services Tax, so is it that much more difficult to add another five per cent? If you spend $100 on a bill, make sure $5 is set aside for your savings. If you spend $600 a month on mortgage payments, add another $30. Investing Money There are many investment vehicles that are available, but few are as popular as the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). The Government of Canada established RRSPs in 1957 to encourage Canadians to save for retirement on a tax sheltered basis.. Every dollar that you put into your RRSP, up to a certain limit, can be deducted from your taxable income. You eventually pay tax on funds withdrawn from an RRSP, but that is presumably after you have retired, and your tax rate is not as high. Continued on page 23

What is an RIF? Bank of Montreal
Think of a RIF as an RSP in reverse. Instead of contributing to your retirement savings, you use a RIF to withdraw income for retirement. The untouched portion continues to grow tax-sheltered, just as it does in an RSP. You can no longer contribute new funds, but you can manage your investments in the same way you do with an RSP. You can convert RSP savings into a RIF any time. But you must convert your RSP to a RIF or other income option by the end of the year in which you turn 71. Benefits of a RIF
Flexibility is the key advantage of a RIF. Plus, the money that stays in the plan continues to benefit from tax deferral. So any funds not used for income still have the opportunity to grow. A RIF lets you withdraw as much or as little as you want from your retirement savings, subject to a yearly minimum. If you decide you need more or less income, you can adjust withdrawals to suit your needs. How RIF payments work
You can structure a RIF to provide payments according to the schedule you want. Many people prefer monthly payments, but semi-annual and annual options are available. Or you can simply withdraw lump sums. Payments can be any amount you choose as long as you withdraw a minimum amount every year, as stipulated by federal government regulations. The minimum is calculated as a percentage of the plan’s total value on Jan. 1 each year. The percentage depends on your age at the beginning of the year. For example, when you are 71 you must withdraw 5.28 per cent of the fair market value of the RIF. When you are 85, it is 8.51 per cent. If you have a younger spouse, the minimum annual payment can be based on his or her age. RIF payments are considered taxable income in the year they are withdrawn, so they’ll be added to your other income sources for tax purposes. Payments are also subject to a withholding tax, which depends on the amount of withdrawal and your province of residence.
Who should have an RRSP? RBC Financial
Every individual who works, files a Canadian income tax return, and looks forward to secure retirement should consider having an RRSP. Here’s why: People who earn income through their employment or self-employment, can reduce their annual tax bill while saving for their future through an RRSP. For people who have a company pension plan,
RRSPs add extra comfort that their retirement needs are met; for those who don’t have company pension plans, RRSPs may be the foundation for funding their retirement. Married couples where one spouse earns more income than the other can reduce their combined tax burden through a spousal RRSP. At retirement, an income-splitting strategy can be applied to reduce
overall tax when the funds are withdrawn. If you are planning on purchasing your first home or are interested in continuing your education, you can contribute to your RRSP, then use these funds as a source of financing. If you anticipate fluctuations in your income because of maternity leave, career change or employment interruptions, the funds in an RRSP are always available to you.
Make a plan to pay yourself first Continued from page 22
Investing in mutual funds is another way to make money grow. A mutual fund takes the savings of many investors and invests that money in a portfolio of securities. Since the funds are spread among several securities, the risk is minimized, as opposed to going the way of the stock market. Mutual funds are offered by banks and trust companies, mutual fund dealers, financial planning organizations, stock brokers, some credit unions and insurance companies. Bonds are another type of interest-earning security.
When you buy a bond, you lend money to a business or government body. The institution pays you a fixed rate of interest for its use and your original investment is repaid at maturity. If you want a good yield with virtually no risk, you may want to investigate a guaranteed investment certificate or term deposit. These are certificates issued by a bank or trust company for a fixed term that earn specific rates of interest for that term. Some of them have minimum investments and involve redemption penalties. The stock market, gold
and silver are other investment opportunities available, all with varying degrees of risk, from small to great. Whichever method you choose, remember it is important to save and save regularly. Statistics Canada surveys on aging and independence have found 50 per cent of Canadians 65 and over, and 41 per cent of those 45 to 64 had not made financial preparations for their retirement. In contrast, 18 per cent of those 65 and over and 20 per cent of those 45 to 64 had prepared for six or more years. In which category do you belong?

Community part of Mosaic Project Submitted
The City of Camrose has been named one of the eight Alberta communities to take part in the national project Canada 150 Mosaic. In 2017, Canada will turn 150 years old. It is a country that has welcomed the world through its borders. To celebrate this birthday, the Mural Mosaic team is launching a bold undertaking. Over a two year span, the team trio (Lewis Lavoie, Paul Lavoie and Phil Alain) plan to create a mural including all provinces and territories, over 80,000 paintings and 150 individual murals that when united will form one gigantic mural mosaic. The mural, if ever connected would be over 365 meters wide (four football fields) x 2.5 meters high (eight feet). The mural will represent
a cultural mosaic, a time capsule, a visual portrayal of history, an art masterpiece from the soul of the nation. An art piece, that 50 years from now, may inspire another generation, who will in turn be able to celebrate through the mural, and maybe take it upon themselves to add to this memory. The City of Camrose sees this project as an opportunity to engage the community on several different levels. It will help foster community pride, support arts and culture and share an expressed image of value while leaving a wonderful legacy as one the community threads that connects Camrose to the rest of Canada. To this end Camrose citizens are invited to share their thoughts on what they think best represents Camrose. Once an image is cho-
sen a design will be created by professional artist Lewis Lavoie and participants will be encouraged to leave their mark during painting workshops that will be held in June. Hundreds of tiles will be completed by community members of all ages and skill levels. The completed tiles will be assembled into a large grid magically transforming the paintings into a unified mosaic that will represent Camrose. Once assembled a date for unveiling will be chosen and the community will be invited to celebrate. Anyone wishing to share their idea for an image that will best represent Camrose is asked to go to www.camrose.ca or stop by the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre by Feb. 26. For more information on this project call Jane at 780-672-9949.

2016 Ford Escape Spirited driving experience Matt McLeod
By Dan Jensen
The 2016 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose brings a chic package, offering customers advanced technology, style, great fuel economy and a spirited driving experience. Escape offers three different engines: a 2.5 litre Duratec, a 1.6 litre EcoBoost and a 2.0 litre EcoBoost. The standard 2.5 litre Duratec puts a zippy 168 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque at your disposal. The 1.6 litre EcoBoost uses twin independent variable camshaft timing to emphasize fuel efficiency or power output as your input demands. It has a rating of 7.4 litres per 100 km highway and produces 178 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque for lively acceleration and passing performance. The 2.0 litre EcoBoost produces 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. With 90 per cent of its peak torque available from 1,750 to 4,500, it helps you make the most of every drive. EcoBoost eng ine torque is specially engi-
neered to provide a fluid shifting experience and enhanced fuel economy. The available intelligent all-wheel-drive system uses software and sensors to analyze data from 25 external signals, including wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle. The system uses the sensor inputs to help the driver turn the vehicle – adding and subtracting torque as needed via an electromagnetic clutch to deliver confident handling and traction performance in a variety of conditions. The Escape also has Curve Control technology to assist the driver by automatically slowing the vehicle when it’s cornering too fast. Torque Vectoring Control applies brake force to the front inside wheel so that more engine torque can be applied to the outside wheel. The result is better handling and traction. Active Grille Shutters can be adjusted on the 2.5 litre and 1.6 litre models for greater fuel efficiency. Escape’s EcoBoost engines come standard with specially calibrated
six-speed select shift automatic transmissions that can provide a more handson experience via manual gear selection control. The Class II trailer tow package enables up to 3,500 pounds of towing capability. Trailer sway control will help by monitoring the motions of your vehicle to detect trailer sway. If needed, it can reduce engine speed and selectively apply brakes to help you maintain control of both the vehicle and the trailer. Looking good An available chrome appearance package includes elegant accents like chrome door handles, skull caps, roof rails, rear license plate appliqué, chrome trim on the front fascia grilles, and 19-inch wheels. Magnetic Metallic debuts as a new color for 2015. Versatile Escape provides up to 1,920 litres of cargo space with the rear seat folded. For a f lat load surface, fold the reclining 60/40 split rear seat down and place the adjustable cargo load floor in its highest position.
The available handsfree liftgate allows fast and easy access to the cargo area with a gentle kicking motion. Discreetly stow your go-to essentials in the front centre console. And keep others close at hand in the storage tray next to each front seat. Escape takes care of you and your front passenger with 10-way power, heated and leather trimmed seats, standard on Titanium. And every model comfortably supports with more hip room and more rear leg room than the previous generation. Treat yourself and your passengers to the deep, rich sound of 10 strategically-placed speakers. Escape respects nature by putting several materials often destined for landfills to practical use. Recycled plastic bottles go into its carpeting, which is a resilient blend of post-consumer and post-industrial polyester fibres. Scrap cotton from jeans, sweaters and t-shirts is turned into sound-absorption material that helps keep Escape quiet inside. Plus, the vehicle itself
is approximately 85 per cent recyclable after it has driven its last kilometre. Technologies you want The 2016 Ford Escape has several available technologies that add to its versatility. SYNC® with MyFord Touch® allows customers to manage information through voice commands, menus accessed via steering wheel controls, touch screens, buttons or knobs Active park assist can detect an available parallel parking space and automatically steer the vehicle into it. Drivers help by controlling the gas and brake pedals Blind Spot Information System with crosstraffic alert displays an alert in the side mirror when a vehicle is detected entering a blind spot. Cross-traffic alert warns if traffic is detected approaching from the sides You can see the 2016 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. “Over 100 years of dedicated service to your community”
June 9, 1924 ~ January 31, 2016 Janet Aurora Snyder of Camrose passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the age of 91 years. Left to cherish her memory are her son Gordon Snyder of Camrose; and three grandchildren Theo, Amy and Ben. Janet was the daughter of Swedish immigrants and grew up on a farm near Ferintosh, AB. She joined the RCAF, WD from June 1943 until June 1946 where she was trained as a stenographer. Then she married and raised a family, travelling to Alaska, BC, Alberta and then, finally, to Toronto, ON where she worked as a medical stenographer for many years. She worked mainly for Toronto General Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital. When she retired, she returned to Camrose to enjoy her home community and flew to Florida as a snowbird over many winters. Her father eventually left farming and moved to Ferintosh where he was the mayor for about a decade. Her brother Roy died in action in 1942 as a RCAF tail gunner on a return run back to England from a bombing mission. Janet was predeceased by her parents Nils and Esther Erickson; husbands Joe Snyder and Tony Sokoloski; daughter Madeline (Harry Moncrieff and Doug Grover); and three brothers Roy Erickson, Clarence (Marguerite) Erickson and Richard (Jewel) Erickson. At Janet’s request, no funeral service will be held. Her ashes will be interned at a memorial celebration at Highland Park Cemetery near New Norway on the afternoon of June 9, 2016. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, STARS Air Ambulance or Donalda Cemetery Club. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.
August Frank Schmidt August Frank Schmidt went home on January 29, 2016 to his Saviour and King on whom he focused his eyes pretty much all his life. Being 99 (he would have said ‘in his 100th year’), so many have gone on before him: his loving wife of 67 years, Alice; 10 of his 11 brothers and sisters; and, of course, his parents. He is survived by his three daughters Ellen Geddes, Sharon (and Tom) Dorsey, and Mae (and Bruce) Fraser; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his brother Dr. Elmer Smith. August was born on September 25, 1916 in a homestead sod house several miles northwest of what is now Hazlett, SK, the eighth child (third son) of August and Louisa Schmidt. His father died tragically in a farm accident while visiting family in the U.S. in 1921, leaving a family of 12 to struggle through great privation well into the 1930s. In 1955, he moved his small family to Saskatoon and enrolled in teacher’s college. Within one year, he had his teaching certificate. He spent five years at his first school – a one-room, grade 1 to 8 school called South Hollywood, northeast of Nipawin. Then he became principal of a three-room school at Blue Jay, just north of Carrot River. Every summer for six weeks, he and the family moved to a place outside Saskatoon in order for him to take another summer-school course at the University of Saskatchewan which went towards his B.Ed. This was always followed by the annual summer camping trip, usually to his beloved Vancouver, the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. 1963 saw the family move closer to Saskatoon. In 1964, he took a sabbatical from teaching to finish his B.Ed. degree at the University of Saskatchewan. He taught elementary school, high school, and adult education in a variety of settings. Dad was a lifelong learner – from astronomy, geology, geography and Old English Literature to European history … and delighted in singing with Mom, gardening, shopping for bargains, canning fruit and berries he’d picked, and auction sales! A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose. Interment will take place at Daysland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gospel for Asia or The Gideons.

Donna Urkow of Camrose, formerly of Rosalind, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at age 75. She was born on September 27, 1940 at Daysland, AB. She was the eldest of five children born to Vern and Barb Van Slyke. Donna married Bill Urkow on July 7, 1959, and they farmed for many years while raising a family of five children. After moving from the family farm at Rosalind in 1986, they spent many hours dancing with friends in Camrose. Donna was a lifetime member of the CWL and spent many hours volunteering with many organizations in the Camrose area. She was a very giving person and loved to entertain and have friends and family over to her home. Donna also enjoyed many years of camping and fishing with her late husband Bill and the family (except when Bill would drop her in the water getting out of the boat). She loved to bake and cook for people. Desserts and ice cream were her favourite. To be surrounded by family was her pride and joy. Her nurturing was a natural ability as she was always concerned about others before herself. Donna is survived by her children Jim (Cathy), Barb, Roger (Shelly), Neil (Rosanne) and Brian (Catherine); 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her brothers Lloyd (Darlene), Allen (Pat) and Ron (Betty). She was predeceased by Bill, her loving husband of 52 years; her brother Bob; and her parents Vern and Barb Van Slyke. Her infectious laugh and her favourite saying of “ya ya” will forever be remembered. We thank our dear Lord for many wonderful years spent with Donna; you will be forever missed and held dear in our hearts. A memorial Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Camrose with Father Larry Pederson as celebrant. Inurnment will take place at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

October 31, 1943 ~ January 29, 2016 Jim was born on October 31, 1943 to Ludwig and Louise (Miciak) Marcinkoski in Viking, AB and passed away at the Royal Alexandra Hospital ICU in Edmonton, AB on January 29, 2016. Jim was raised on a farm north of Strome where he attended Willow School. He finished Grade 11 and decided to help with the farm when his father fell ill. He had a passion for farming his entire life. In his younger years, Jim enjoyed riding horses, calf-roping and the rodeo scene. On May 2, 1981, Jim married the girl across the road, Irene (Vass), at Polska Church. They were blessed with four daughters, Heather, Jennifer, Heidi and Amber. As the girls grew up, he was actively involved with restarting the Wavy Lake 4-H Beef Club in Strome and showing his purebred Charolais cattle across Canada. Jim enjoyed time with family, friends and neighbours, Bruce Stampede, America’s Funniest Home Videos and watching a variety of sports – whether they were played by his girls or grandchildren, or professionally on TV. Jim found great joy in all his grandchildren and loved having visits with them. Jim will always be remembered for his great sense of humour, his determination in completing any task, and his joy in his family. He was always eager to chat with friends and neighbours, from discussing the weather to sharing new-found jokes. Jim was proud of his girls and the lives they had created for themselves. In 1999, Jim was diagnosed with Lupus and, though challenges arose, he was still able to be on the farm and enjoy family and friends. Jim began to receive dialysis treatments in 2014 at the Vegreville Dialysis Clinic where he made more friends and enjoyed being a jokester with the nurses. Jim was admitted to the ICU at the Royal Alexandra Hospital where he was called home with family by his side on January 29, 2016. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife Irene; daughters Heather (Ryan) Bratrud and their children Parker, Makenzie, Tuf and Tate, Jennifer (Clint) Hamilton and their children Cole, Ceejay and Kylee, Heidi (Bonnie) Marcinkoski and Amber (Landon) Gall; his siblings Ken (Darlene Brash), Audrey Hazard and Bob (Wendy); his aunts Helen Fischer, Lorraine Hintz and Steffie Miciak; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Waiting to welcome him home are his parents Ludwig and Louise; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Prayer services were held on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 7 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel in Camrose. A Mass of Christian Burial was held from Holy Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Viking on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11 a.m. with Father Leon Kler as Celebrant. Interment has taken place at the Polska Cemetery near Holden. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Polska Church Fund or to the Renal Program c/o St. Joseph’s Hospital, 5241-43 Street, Vegreville, AB T9C 1R5. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Animal Shelter searches for logo
Central Agencies Home of the Week
Beautiful townhouse home
By Murray Green
The newly formed Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society is seeking help from talented artists. This is a group of dedicated animal lovers who see a need for an animal shelter in Camrose, and are committed to seeing this goal become reality. “We need a logo. We are asking people to send your submissions by email to susan.mary.hertel@gmail. com or drop off paper copies to Fiona’s Coffee Shop on Main Street in Camrose before Feb. 19,” said member Susan Hertel. If you are interested in joining the planning and fundraising for an animal shelter, join the group for the next meeting at Fiona’s on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend to talk about animal protection, or about a new shelter. “Adoptions work so much better if they have a shelter to go to and visit to see the animals prior to adoption,” said Hertel.
