Full Moon Walk scheduled for February 22 By Murray Green

Walkable Camrose, the City of Camrose and the Camrose Walkers are inviting residents to participate in a Full Moon Walk in celebration of winter walking on Monday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m., with an introduction and information on winter walking at 6:30 p.m. “We’re encouraging people to meet at the Stoney Creek Centre prior to the 6:30 p.m. opening presentation before walking on Stoney Creek Trails. This is a good opportunity for people to take advantage of and learn about the beautiful trail system that Camrose has to offer. We want people to be as active as possible in the winter and to go for walks. It is a good for photographers to take pictures of the full moon. The weather is warming up, so we are hoping for a nice night,” said Walkable Camrose member Deanna Trzeciakowski. “It will be a family

4-H collects electronics By Lori Larsen Chances are somewhere taking up room in your house is an electronic device that you no longer use, need or want. So why not put it to good use? “The Armena 4-H horse members are raising money for the club by collecting unwanted electronics,” said member Hannah Resch. This fundraising initiative not only helps the children of the club, but also serves as a way to help clean up and purposefully dispose of electronics that might otherwise end up in landfills. “The club is offering to pick up smaller items, but there is also going to be a central drop-off near Armena,” added Resch. Eligible items, in accordance to Alberta’s Electronic Recycling program, include visual display devices (monitors, televisions), laptops, notebooks, computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and faxes (stand-alone and combination units up to 1,000 kg). If you wish to donate used electronics all items must be collected no later than March 15. For more information contact Armena 4-H at 780-237-0290.

friendly event and everyone is welcome to join us. It also introduces people to other attractions in the valley, such as showshoeing and skiing. This is a great way to get children involved with more activities. “Last year we had about 70 people and we are hoping for a few more or the same as last year. This year the trails will be marked with glow sticks and walkers can carry a glow stick as well.” Winter Walk Day is an annual event in which thousands of Albertans celebrate winter and the benefits that walking provides for our health, the environment, reduced traffic and stronger communities. Many health experts recommend cold-weather walking as an opportunity to get the fitness you need, keep bones strong, improve mood and burn calories. Outdoor walking through the park or around the neighborhood on a cold day won’t burn any more calories than walking

on a warm summer day, but walking in the snow will. You expend more energy because it’s harder to move your feet in the snow, and you lift your legs a little higher. Camrose Walkers is a group of members who meet regularly to walk outdoors on various routes within the city. Walkable Camrose is a

local committee comprised of community partners who meet monthly to look at ways to enhance recreation and destination walking in the community. The group is currently focusing on safety, accessibility, and creating a culture of walking. Participants will head inside the centre for complementary hot beverages cour-

tesy of the Camrose Primary Care Network after the walk. Be sure to check the weather forecast and watch the windchill index. Walkable Camrose encourages everyone to dress in breathable layers to keep warm and avoid overheating. Ensure that your footwear has good grip for snow or icy areas.

Snow Golf tourney assists Habitat By Lori Larsen If you’re looking to add a little more challenge to your golf game or you just want to participate in a fun winter activity, why not try a round of snow golf, all the while contributing to a good cause? Habitat for Humanity Camrose is holding it’s first annual “Putt Up a House for Habitat” charity snow golf tournament on Feb. 27. “We were looking for a fundraising event that would be a bit different,” said Cody McCarroll, Habitat for Humanity Camrose executive director. “We wanted it to be fun, reach new people and raise a significant amount of money in the process.” Selecting a fundraising event that was different, could be held outdoors in the winter and would attract a variety of people was not without its challenges. The first logistical problem with the event was how to have an event in the winter time that lasts for three or four hours without removing fun from the equation. Jadene Mah, member of the board of directors for Habitat Camrose devised a solution to the problem. She suggested turning participants’ cars into golf carts. “That way they are actually only outside for five or ten minutes and it is a good opportunity to see the

best the community has to offer,” said McCarroll. “This is an event that gives back to as well as promotes Camrose,” said Brenda Murdock-Winder, project coordinator, Habitat for Humanity Camrose. “We put together a blend when we designed the course, including some of Camrose’s iconic landmarks and some empty lots or green spaces located beside strategically chosen businesses,” said McCarroll. Each of the 18 holes for the event is sponsored by a local business. Participants will tee off at the sponsored hole and could potentially be greeted with a hot drink, depending on what the sponsors want to do, then get information on how to get to the next hole. The holes will look very much like a golf course with tee off box, yardage markers, and a sign saying if it is a par three, four or five. Unlike regular golf, snow golf is played using a soft foam ball. McCarroll conducted some product testing to determine the best prototype ball. After several examples, a soft foam stress ball was chosen. “It (the ball chosen) can’t break anything, goes about 60 yards and is light enough so it won’t sink in the snow and disappear,” said McCarroll. The holes themselves

will be hula-hoops marked with soccer flags. To sink a shot participants have to get the ball to stop inside the hula-hoop. As for golf clubs, McCarroll suggested the only one that might be necessary for the event is a seven iron. “We have some old garage sale golf clubs at ReStore if participants don’t want to use their own clubs (or do not have clubs),” said McCarroll. A team of volunteers from Augustana did a trial run of the course to determine approximately how long it will take to complete. “It should be easily completed in three to three and a half hours, with about five to seven minutes per hole,” said McCarroll. Golfers will be given a score card and map of the course. The final hole is appropriately located at the Camrose Golf Course. A banquet sponsored by Stockmen’s Chophouse starting at 5:30 p.m. and a silent auction are both included in the fees. Golfers, non-golfers, outdoor enthusiasts, families, coworkers and walking groups are encouraged to put together and register a team of four and come out for a fun and worthwhile event. All funds raised from this event will go directly to Habitat’s next building project. “We build duplex proj-

ects every year. Our next build project will be in Cascades subdivision just north of Safeway. We are building two more homes for local families,” explained McCarroll. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Restore building in Camrose, and the 20th anniversary of the Habitat Camrose affiliate. The two builds slated for this year will be the 29th and 30th in Camrose. “There is always a need to raise more money. There are lots and lots of families in Camrose, especially in an economy like this one, that could use a safe and decent place to live,” said McCarroll. The title sponsor for the event is Camrose Energy. Registration takes place from 12 to one p.m. at ReStore. Golfing runs from one to 4:30 p.m. For more information including tournament rules, explanation videos and registration forms or if you wish to contribute to the silent auction please visit Habitat’s website at www. habitatcamrose.com/event, email info@habitatcamrose. com or phone 780 679 0369. For some lighthearted comments, taglines and photos prior to the event be sure to visit Habitat’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

Celebrate with Camrose Police Service at the 60th anniversary ball By Lori Larsen Members of Camrose Police Service along with their guests, retired members, Victim Services personnel, officers from other detachments and members of the public will celebrate in grandeur not only the continual commitment of the Service but its 60th anniversary at the Camrose Police Service 60th Anniversary Ball. The evening will be held in ceremonial fashion at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino on Mar. 19. “The program is quite formal; we follow the same type of format every five years,” said Const. Fernhout, Camrose Police Service crime prevention officer. The formal part of the evening will begin with the piping in of the flags. Members will carry in the Canadian flag, provincial flag, and Camrose Police Service flag. “It is tradition to pipe in the flags and we have run that tradition for a number of years. It adds a nice touch to the evening,” added Constable Belanger, who also acts as the ceremonial sergeant major for the Camrose Police Service. Piping in the flags is rich in tradition among military and policing organizations. “The tradition of marching in the flags with the piper ends with the chief paying the piper, and the way he pays the piper is with a shot of a beverage of the piper’s choice,” said Belanger. Hence the phrase, “Pay the Piper.” The evening will continue with the singing of O Canada and then a toast to fallen officers around the world. “A table is always left open at the front of the room for all the fallen members. We honour them with a toast and remember the sacrifice they have made,” explained Constable Fernhout. A toast to the queen and

grace will be followed with a three course plated meal, after which the festivities will continue with a dance accompanied by the music of a live band. “Although the beginning of the program is quite formal and rich with tradition, once the meal is finished and the live band begins to play the atmosphere becomes quite relaxed. It’s the best of both worlds,” said Fernhout. This year invitations are open to the public to attend and enjoy not only the splendor of a “black tie” event but the company of the Camrose Police Service members. “It’s an opportunity for citizens to come and find out more about the police and see us in a different light,” said Fernhout. “We often see the citizens in some of the worse circumstances so its nice to have events like this where we can meet the public without that stress. “It’s a good way to build connections. “It’s an opportunity to show our appreciation to our stakeholders, and the people who support our association and police service. We appreciate all the members of the community that donate so much of their time and effort to what we do.” The evening promises pomp and ceremony with police members attending in dress uniforms, pipers announcing tradition and a formal sit down dinner, combined with fun and enjoyment as the band plays and pomp gives way to party. Tickets are selling fast so if you wish to be part of a very special evening you can purchase them over the front counter at the police service. The order of dress for the evening is formal. All proceeds from the event will be used to support police sponsored charities.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Three to One Odds

When I still had teenagers living at home, I used to watch the news regularly. As I watched, I would do a running rant. I’d talk back to the announcer about how useless a story was. I’d pontificate about what the government should be doing. I’d argue with people who were interviewed. I’d go on about how appalling a certain situation was. I didn’t even realize I was doing that until one day my teenage son said to me, “Don’t watch if it upsets you so much.” He stopped me cold. I wouldn’t have said I was “upset.” Opinionated, maybe, but not upset. And I had no idea my ranting was affecting him.

WALMART ASSISTS FOOD BANK

***

On another occasion, when I was a board member of an organization, I was talking with our finance person about the state of the world as it affected rural people. (I think the conversation might have started with something loosely connected to the work of our organization.) He listened for quite a while. When I ran out of breath and stopped for a moment, he said, “You sound bitter.” Bitter? Not a word I’d choose as my favourite descriptor! If I were to list characteristics of people I like to spend time with, “bitter” would not be on the list. I thought of myself as a positive person. Apparently, at least one person did not think of me that way. When did I become bitter? *** You’ve probably noticed, as I have, that lots of mass media coverage is a tad dismal these days. The state of the world, the state of the economy, the state of the environment – doesn’t feel like a lot of good news. Fear is in the air. Anger and bitterness are loud. And yet, really, in Alberta and in our community, even the poorest among us are living better lives than humans did for millennia. We are safer, healthier, with more advantages and conveniences, fewer hardships and injustices, than most of our ancestors. How come it doesn’t feel that way? There might be a clue in something I read recently. ***

Adams Miller, author of Creating Your Best Life, wrote, “In order to flourish, whether in a marriage, at work or in any other type of environment, you need three positive comments or interactions for every one negative. If you listen to the news, we’re so far below three-to-one it’s staggering.” Three positives for every negative? Three to one odds? When I first read that, it was daunting. But then I thought, we could use that information in a very practical way. For example, I could pay attention to when I’m thinking dark thoughts or saying dark things. As soon as I notice I’m in “bitter” territory, I could choose to say or think three positive things. If nothing else, stopping to think of three positive things breaks the negativity trance. That in itself is a benefit. ***

So – should we stop paying attention to the news? Maybe, maybe not. We have some things to resolve, whether we watch and listen to the news or not. If we focus only on the negative, that drags us down and makes it hard to tackle much of anything. If we think of three positive things – and there are always three positive things to think or say – if nothing else, that will lift our spirits enough so we have energy to tackle the tough stuff. Perhaps on this very day, I will experiment just to see if I can flip my focus from one negative to three positive things. Can’t hurt! ***

NDP record Lorne Vanderwoude (Camrose Booster, Feb. 2) asks whether “this government is going to ruin the province like other NDP governments have done in other provinces in the past.” The facts suggest otherwise. He perpetrates an “NDPruins-provinces” myth despite factual track records of NDP governments. If measuring fiscal responsibility using “per capita” spending, Alberta (after four decades under the PC regime) spends more per capita than eight other provinces. Only Saskatchewan and Newfoundland/Labrador have higher per capita spending (2014/15) than Alberta – and all three provinces are oil-producing provinces. When the Sauder School of Business (Discussion Paper 2013-01) examined BC’s fiscal record for provincial budget and debt under the NDP (1991-2001), comparing it to the Liberals (2001-13), checking net debt loads as a percent of GDP and per capita spending, fiscal management was “moderately better under the NDP than the BC Liberals” and “the NDP managed the budget better.” This paper found Harcourt’s NDP government (1991-96) “more fiscally responsible” than the subsequent Glen Clark, Miller and Dosanjh governments. The NDP “controlled provin-

cial debt and expenditures” better than the Liberals. According to Stats Canada, BC debt climbed from $43,066 million to $59,805. Similarly, NDP’s Bob Rae got a bad rap, as Ontario debt under him rose from $35.4 billion (1990) to $90.7 billion (1995) in five years. However, no one, not even media, points out the fact that under (PC) Mike Harris, Ontario’s debt increased sharply from $90.7 billion to $132.6 billion (200203) while Harris drastically cut services, and downloaded further services onto municipalities. Likewise, in Saskatchewan, under Calvert, the NDP left Brad Wall with a $397.8 billion surplus (2007). By 2013 that surplus had dwindled to a mere $16 billion under Brad Wall, despite all their potash and oil. Meanwhile Saskatchewan’s debt liabilities had grown from $11.9 billion to $13 billion in six years. Booster readers need to know that even though the NDP may not be providing all the changes we had hoped for, the NDP (factual) track record is not one of “ruination.” Plus, the dilemma facing Albertans (regardless of which Party forms government) is an oil-glut crisis (with 10 months world-supply in storage), causing the subsequent fall in oil prices. Neither provincial nor federal governments are able to raise worldwide oil prices. Marion Leithead, Bawlf 48 Avenue bridge Reassuring to know there are at least a few of us viewing the 48 Avenue bridge/ pedestrian underpass/SMH heliport capital projects in the same light (or dark). There has to be a better way. Like a coin, each issue has two sides; thankfully we have

this newspaper as a vehicle to present both. These capital project examples evolve from a common spending theme – it is called “attitude”. Stan Waters (1920-91), lieutenant general, distinguished military career (First Special Service Force, famed Devil’s Brigade of WWII; Commander Mobile Command, 1973-75), and Canada’s first elected senator, represented Alberta on a platform of controlling Government waste at all levels. His visionary crusade message was “Stop Spending”. I knew Stan Waters and his family. I cried at his funeral for all our loss. He was larger than life; an untiring devotion to his message to his last breath. Pity, apparently no one in government listened as evidenced by spending scandals which brought down the Alberta government in our 2015 election. Government / bureaucratic spending requires great courage and strong values to “Stop Spending” and explore a better way. Reality check – Alberta’s economy is a mess. Painful now, destined to get much worse in the near term. During decades of international oilpatch assignments, as a naive Canadian, I subscribed to a business precaution – “when it looks bad, seems bad, smells bad, it is bad and only gets worse.” Aforementioned capital projects are married to only one bank account – you the tax payer and costs will eventually filter down, guaranteed. Readers, in our current economic uncertainty and pain, which side of the coin best represents to you part of the solution versus part of the problem? Neil Leeson Camrose

Talk to your teen about bullying, peer pressure Alberta Health Services

Teens can be under a lot of pressure as they deal with hormonal changes, heartbreaks, anxiety about school, and relationships. With so much going on in your teen’s life, it is important to watch for signs that they may be struggling with bullying. If your teen seems unusually anxious, worried about going to school or withdrawn, take some time to check in and let them know you are there to support them. Bullying can take different forms. Verbal: name calling, gossiping and negative comments about a person’s interests or background (e.g. culture, race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual orientation). Physical: hitting, tripping, pinching and unwanted sexual touching. Social: leaving someone out on purpose, telling others not to be friends and spreading rumors. Cyber: the use of email, text messages, social media and internet sites to socially exclude, embarrass and damage reputations and relationships. What to do if you suspect your teen is being bullied? Start the conversation. Talk often and openly. Offer comfort and encourage your teen to talk about their feelings. Work with your teen’s

school to monitor, prevent and stop bullying behaviours. Make safety arrangements. Be sure your teen knows how to get help. Build confidence. Teach your teen to be assertive,

not aggressive. Stand up for your teen. Get involved in bullying awareness and prevention programs. Be a role model. Adult intervention is key to bullying prevention. Being

informed about bullying is the first step in addressing bullying behaviour and promoting healthy relationships. Take action with teachers and other adults in your community to implement

anti-bullying programs to help end negative implications caused by bullying. For more information and resources on bullying awareness and prevention, visit www.teachingsexualhealth.ca.

Fowler steps down as BRCF chair

The economics of infrastructure spending Currently, both the federal and provincial governments are rushing to spend on infrastructure to stimulate the economy. The problem is that it won’t work. The standard story is that an increase in government Neil Hepburn spending on infrastrucEconomics, Augustana Campus, ture will increase the University of Alberta incomes of the workers on those projects and they will spend that money and that will, in turn, generate further increases in incomes. So in theory, a $1 million increase in spending results in a multi-million dollar increase in GDP. At one time that would work – Roosevelt’s “New Deal” was an example of that. However, there is a crucial difference between the world then and now. In the 1930s, global trade was largely nonexistent so any increases in income within a country would spur further consumption and incomes within that country. Today, however, global trade means that increased incomes for people working on infrastructure projects will be partially spent on imports and that won’t increase domestic incomes. (Please note, this is not a call for protectionism. The wave of protectionism that swept across the world at the start of the Great Depression only made it worse.) Attempts at stimulus spending in recent years, especially in the aftermath of the 2008 financial market crisis, had little effect around the world. Empirical estimates suggest that the fiscal multiplier is only in the 1.5 neighbourhood; thus, an increase in infrastructure spending wont’ be a huge stimulus for the economy. So, if infrastructure spending won’t increase GDP through a “multiplier” effect, what possible reason is there to go ahead and do it anyway? Well, there are two good reasons. First, if there is infrastructure that we definitely need, now is a good time to build it because we can get it done at a much lower cost than building it when the economy is booming. Furthermore, government spending on infrastructure in good times simply crowds out private investment by driving up construction costs. Second, we are in a mess in Alberta because of a one-track economy. If (and this is a big if) infrastructure spending can be identified that will spur diversification, then spending on that area may be a good idea. The risk in spending on infrastructure to spur diversification requires us to “pick winners” and that has traditionally been a risky venture. If we expect infrastructure spending to be the magic elixir that makes things all better, we will be sorely disappointed. However, infrastructure spending may still be a good idea if it is for the right projects - projects that we would want to pursue on their own merits because they provide things that we need. If, on the other hand, we spend on infrastructure just for the sake of infrastructure spending and spurring growth, we will be seriously disappointed.

The Battle River Community Foundation celebrated 20 years of service to east central Alberta in 2015. For most of those years Camrose businessman Blain Fowler has been an active participant in Foundation activities and for 10 of those years he has been chairman of the board. On Dec, 31, 2015, Fowler stepped down from the position of chair in order to let someone else become comfortable with the role. “The Foundation has been so very fortunate to have had 10 years of direction and guidance from Blain,” says BRCF executive director Dana Andreassen. “He has been a dedicated and passionate advocate for the growth of the Foundation.” Fowler made the decision to step down while he still has two years remaining in his second term as a board member. Until his term expires he will remain on the board in the role of past chair. Vivianne Grue, herself a long-standing member of the BRCF

Blain Fowler

Vivianne Grue

board of directors, assumed the role of chair on Jan. 1 of this year. “Under Blain’s leadership our Foundation’s assets have grown, our ability to weather financial storms has been cemented and, thanks to strong support from donors, the Foundation has been able to give back almost $4 million to our communities to support local projects. Blain’s influence has been beyond measure,” says Vivianne. “We as a board feel very privileged to have the opportunity to continue to benefit

from his wisdom and support as I take on the role of chair.” The Foundation has a number of projects on the go for 2016, including honouring community builders in the Flagstaff area and the Camrose area with special tribute dinners. The Foundation’s annual public meeting will take place in June at the Norsemen Inn, Camrose. At that time members of the public are invited to hear an update on all the Foundation’s plans and activities.

R&D stuffs a hot tub with food

Russ and Doneal (right) Greipl present a cheque for $500 to go along with the non-perishable that were donated by R&D Hot Tubs customers to the food bank to Camrose Neighbor Aid Center program director Jo-Anne Tweed. By Dan Jensen

Camrose and area residents showed their generosity by filling a hot tub full of non perishable items for the Camrose Neighbor Aid Center food bank during R&D Hot Tubs’ fifth annual Stuff a Tub for the Food Bank Drive during the month of December. “The donations were even more than last year,” explained Doneal Greipl, who is the co-owner of R&D Hot Tubs along with her husband, Russ. “We are very thankful to everyone who made this year’s drive a success.”

Donors also provided approximately $350 in cash that Neighbor Aid will be able to use to purchase food supplies. R&D Hot Tubs made a donation of $500. “Our commitment was that if people filled the tub we would donate that amount,” said Doneal. “We really had no doubt that it would happen.” The drive started off slow, but gained steam after a picture appeared on the front page of The Camrose Booster. “After that, the donations just ballooned,” said Doneal. “We had three or

four donations the morning after the paper went out.” Neighbor Aid program director Jo-Anne Tweed said the food bank shelves are now full with enough items to last through the winter. “I am always impressed with the support we have received from the community,” said Jo-Anne. “People in this area are caring and giving, and are concerned about others. When we put out the call for help they really step up.” The Camrose Neighbor Aid Centre food bank currently assists 165 clients.

BUSINESS BOOT CAMPS BENEFIT LOCALS Local business people are finding that Business Plan Boot Camps, which are offered by Rural Alberta Business Centre, to be extremely valuable to their respective business success stories. Chris Deitz, owner of Cloud 9 Day Spas, recently summed up her experience with the Boot Camp: “My experience with RABC was business changing! It happened when I attended the first Business Boot Camp.” Another Camrose small business owner, Evalynn Ross, operator of The Dinner Deva, offers her thoughts on the same course: “Having never done a business model before, this workshop and Louise helped me fill in a lot of blanks and to stay focused on what I am passionate about. The feedback from the panel at the end was the icing on the cake!” Business owners and managers will now get another opportunity to attend another RABC Business Plan Boot Camp. It entails attending three, 3-hour workshops, plus a 45-minute session where a mentoring panel will be on hand to provide dynamic feedback and advice. Professional business leaders will evaluate the work of all attendees’ plans derived from information gleaned at the course, giving budding entrepreneurs, current business owners and management a grand opportunity to better position their businesses towards success. Information will be offered during the sessions on: market research and marketing, operational topics, financial planning, and more. The course is open to existing businesses and ideas still in the making. One of the attendees will win a $3000 business wish! The course takes place in the RABC office Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, March 2, 9, and 16th. The review panel will take place in April. For maximum productivity and a terrific learning experience, the course is limited to just 10 registrants. Cost is only $50. An application form is available on the RABC website or contact the office at (780) 608-7875. The last day to register is February 25th. Visitor Information Centre at Chamber had a busy year

25 YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP

Windwood Group Locks & Signs was made a member of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce President’s Quarter Century Club for 25 years of continuous support and membership in the largest and oldest Camrose business organization. Accepting the award on behalf of Windwood Group Locks & Signs were Amanda and Richard McDevitt.

By Dan Jensen Staff at the Visitor Information Centre at the Bill Fowler Centre assisted more than 4,500 visitors in 2015. “The number of visitors at the Camrose VIC continues to increase,” said Sharon Anderson, executive director of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce, which operates the centre. “This is not the case at some other visitor centres in Alberta. We found there are a greater number of Edmonton visitors who stopped in just for the day. They were very interested in everything we could offer.” The centre was awarded accreditation by the Alberta Visitor Information Providers, a division of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation, and was nominated as a finalist for an AMMY award, which recognizes Alberta visitor information centres for their outstanding achievements in enhancing the quality of operations, service and facility. “We received an honourable mention but the award went to a VIC that established a digital presence,” said Anderson. Camrose VIC staff receive tourist destination and product based training at the Travel Alberta Spring Showcase, where they are equipped with the tools needed to provide excellent service to visitors and help make their vacations a better experience. “Our staff provide information on Camrose and area attractions,” said Anderson. “Our 2015 team of summer students included Valerie Brown, Lauren Feth and Brynn Markowsky. All three are an asset to our community and proved to be great ambassadors for Camrose, promoting our area, sharing the Tourism Camrose publication, as well as brochures made by our staff members for Camrose visitors. Mirror Lake Express The Camrose Mirror Lake Express enjoyed another successful year, offering trips on the Mirror Lake trails on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from June 13. Over $11,295 was raised from the sale of 4,508 tickets and 29 passes.

Chamber membership offers good value By Dan Jensen The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce continues to provide good value to its members. “When you invest in a Chamber of Commerce membership you receive the additional benefit of membership in both the Alberta Chambers of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce,” said executive director Sharon Anderson in her report at the Chamber’s annual general meeting Feb. 3. “Being affiliated with the provincial and Canadian organizations allows us the opportunity of having a business voice at all levels of government, as well as access to a variety of member only, value-added programs. The value-add programs are upgraded to ensure you get the best benefit possible.” Chamber president Tanya Fox reported that the Chamber has welcomed over 25 new businesses over the last year and has worked hard to see what their successes or struggles have been. She said the Chamber will continue to strive to be a collective voice for members with MLAs, city councillors and the mayor, our own community and across Alberta. Fox noted the Chamber is working on some exciting new looks for major events such as Small Business Week, the Chamber Parade, Jaywalkers’ Jamboree and the Corporate Christmas Party.

Members of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce executive for 2016 are left to right, front, Bridget Lennartson, Ashley Morton, first vice-president Julie Girard, Jenni Routhier, Dan Drisdelle, Marilou Yampolsky, Sam Bowen, left to right, back, president Tanya Fox, Ross Shuman, Trevor Vinet, executive director Sharon Anderson, Randall Nickel, Doug Schaffner and Ray Telford.

“I am excited to see which of the many innovative ideas that have been placed on the table are brought to you,” she said. Local, provincial and federal events in which the Chamber was involved over the past 12 months included the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Political Action Day and MLA dinner, the annual meetings of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce and Canadian Chamber of Commerce, a luncheon for (former Minister of Energy) Frank Eberle at the Bailey Theatre, a minimum wage discussion session with

MLA Bruce Hinkley, and a Syrian refugee session in Edmonton to determine the Chamber’s role in the future employment of refugees. All of the projects in which the Chamber was involved in 2015 were profitable with the exception of the parades. “Parades should break even but the cost of travel and truck rental to attend out of town events resulted in a loss,” said Anderson. The Chamber installed a new digital sign in June on which members are able to post events or employment related announcements. All

current members are entitled to one free posting. Fox said as a member of the Chamber she has been able to meet other business owners, gain some ideas, share her struggles and realize that she is not alone. “This community comes together in an amazing way to support one another and it is something that is incredible. I have lived all over the world and this is the first time I can truly say that I will never want any other place except Camrose to be my home. This is the most amazing community to live in and it is all

because of all of you sitting in this room and everybody else who is out in the community. I congratulate you and thank you every day for making everyone feel so welcome.” Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer congratulated the Chamber on entering its 108th year. “It has been a long haul for the Chamber and it has survived well doing things for the City of Camrose as well as for the community in bringing businesses to town and in assisting with the development of businesses we do have,” said Mayer.

Children’s Choir performs Disney By Murray Green

The Camrose and Area Children’s Choirs will be presenting its 10th annual Dessert Concert Fundraiser: Inspired by Disney! The event takes place Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Camrose United Church Hall (4829-50 Street). The choirs have taken several favourites from classic animated films over the years, from Pinocchio to Frozen, Cinderella to the Lion King, and then gone exploring through the world of choral music to see what complements these timeless themes or fascinating cultures. The choirs have added works by J.S. Bach, folk songs from around the world and Italian madrigals. The singers have loved learning all this repertoire, familiar as well as new, and are thrilled to share it from the stage for your listening enjoyment. The program begins with scrumptious homemade desserts at 6 p.m, followed by the concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are available in advance from choir members, or by calling 780-672-3372. Some tickets may be available at the door.

Wood prepares to release new CD By Murray Green

DaysArts presents…

Rescheduled y, sda from Wedne Dec. 9 John Wort Hannam’s winsome, lonesome and then some style of acoustic roots music is a fusion of lyrically-driven songs, soaring vocals and blistering solos.

Royal Wood is a master at writing creative meaningful songs. In fact, he was named Songwriter of the Year by iTunes in 2008. Wood has continued to evolve and develop his musical craft to create a smooth show on stage. Jadea Kelly will be opening for Wood on Friday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m., in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Kelly discovered her success with heavy orchestration, darker organ pads, layered harmonies and sonic space. Wood released his fifth studio album The Burning Bright which immediately went to the Top 30 on the Canadian chart. This was after his chart-topping 2012 release, the JUNO award nominated We Were Born To Glory, which established him as one of the country’s most accomplished alt-pop singer/ songwriters, producers, arrangers and multi-instrumentalists. “I’m going to be bringing a mixture of everything for the Camrose show. I tend to do that anyway,” informed Wood. “I’m bringing my trio with a guitar player and an upright bass player. On this tour I’m going into smaller cities and performing more intimate shows. I like to add more story telling and share why I wrote the song and what it is about.

I like the more laid back environment.” His single “Forever and Ever” was the number one added song at HOT AC Radio in Canada and a Top 20 hit on CBC Radio 2. “I grew up playing in Lion’s halls and small venues, so I really enjoy going back, getting closer to the audience,” he shared. “I want to perform a mixture of music. Because I haven’t released the new album yet, I’m not going to hammer the audience with all of new the songs they haven’t heard.” Wood’s upcoming album GHOST LIGHT, features the single “Long Way Out” and is due to be released on April 22. There are various explanations for the title ghost light. There is the supernatural narrative – that every theatre has a ghost, and that when the light isn’t lit, the darkness provides a chance for the dead to haunt us. And then there is the Royal Wood version of GHOST LIGHT. The kind that lets someone truly shine from within – raw, honest and open. That’s why he has named his new record after this mythical glow. “This album for me was a full return to writing and recording simply for the joy of creation. A true letting go and allowing,” said Wood. The result is an album that exudes raw emotion and emanates a feel of the songwriters of the 60s and 70s.

“I felt like on this album, I snuffed out the external ghost lights, and allowed my internal light to glow instead,” he added. “I jumped around from instrument to instrument in the studio, playing piano and guitar solos, bass, keys, percussion, anything and everything I could get my hands on.” This album marks an immense change in his life and his artistic path, delivering more and more of a letting go to the forefront of his music. The record seizes his sincerest passion for creativity and imagination. It showcases a deeper understanding of where his journey began and where he wants to take it. “I was raised on folk and soul music and pop rock like The Beatles. Most of my music falls under those. I am a bit a throwback where I like to really craft my music,” said Wood. “As a performer I adjust the show based on the number of people in the band and the size of the venue. With this trio, I get to perform some of the old favourites, however, with a trio and a new guitar player who keeps it fresh, and the songs are a little different. How the song is played changes and it keeps it fresh for me.” Tickets are available at the Lougheed Box Office.

Master children’s entertainer Fred Penner is back in Camrose. He will appear at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 3:30 p.m. The gentle giant with an undeniable ability to make children feel good about themselves will be bringing many years of honing his music and a love of entertaining children to the stage. At the early age of four, Penner began making up songs while travelling on the bus with his mother. He taught himself how to play the guitar when he was in grade school, and performed in school choirs and pageants. Through his experience with his sister Susan’s Down Syndrome, he recognized the therapeutic value of music. In 1984, he appeared on the children’s television show, The Elephant Show, singing “The Cat Came Back.” In 1991, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada for “using music and song to entertain and educate his young audience.” His television show, Fred Penner’s Place, aired for 30 minutes on CBC in Canada from 1985 to 1997. The Winnipeg performer often tours western Canada.

Penner has crafted 12 children’s albums and entertained many audiences

across Canada. Tickets are available at the Bailey Box Office or online.

WHO

Kidney Foundation launches campaign By Dan Jensen The Camrose Kidney Foundation will be making the call for volunteer canvassers when it launches its 2016 fundraising campaign with an evening (7 p.m.) reception at the Norsemen Inn, Wednesday, Feb. 17. “We would like to have 30 canvassers, said Camrose Kidney Foundation volunteer Erhard Pinno. “We are encouraging people to give it a try.” The Camrose Kidney Foundation has had a steady core group of volunteer canvassers for the past many years. “We are assuming that a lot of them will be back again but we still need to confirm that,” said Pinno. “We always lose a few every year so we have to find new ones.” The Foundation has not set a time limit on the campaign, but is hoping to have most of it completed in the month of March. Foundation update Guest speaker for the launch will be Kidney Foundation Northern Alberta and Territories branch executive director Flavia Robles, who will be providing an update on the research that is being done on kidney disease and the services that the Kidney Foundation is able to offer.

“There are still a lot of people who are not very aware of the Kidney Foundation and are benefitting from the work that it does,” said Pinno. Opportunities for testimonials will be provided by those who have received kidney transplants or who are currently receiving dialysis. “One of the most difficult things for those who are receiving dialysis is having to make constant trips to the kidney unit in Wetaskiwin,” said Pinno. Pinno isn’t sure of the number of people who are waiting for kidney transplant, but knows that the number of people who are living with kidney disease is growing all the time. Kidney Foundation statistics show that the number of Canadians being treated for kidney failure has more than doubled in the past two decades and that nearly 75 per cent of the over 4,500 Canadians on the waiting list for an organ transplant are in need of a kidney. Success in 2015 Camrose and area residents and businesses were generous with their giving during the Kidney Foundation’s 2015 campaign. “Together we raised $32,962 – $8,625 at the kick-

off event, $20,912 from residents and $3,425 from businesses,” said Pinno. “Some of the 900 donors gave twice: once at their business and once at home.” The campaign had 23 canvassers who braved the sometimes icy streets and cold weather to knock on doors. “Unfortunately we didn’t have enough canvassers to cover the whole city,” said Pinno. Thirty-one per cent of all the money raised by the Kidney Foundation of Canada goes towards research. Nineteen per cent goes towards public education, 19 per cent towards management and administration, 18 per cent to patient services, 5.5 per cent to organ donation, and 4.7 per cent to public policy. The Kidney Foundation of Canada funds over onethird of all kidney-related research in Canada. “We’re proud of the role the Foundation has played over the past four decades,: said the Kidney Foundation of Canada web page. “The continual enhancement of research capacity is critical to the advancement of knowledge and the career development and retention of renal researchers.”

McIndoe competes for Zone 4 in Volleyball

Camrose was well represented at Alberta Winter Games

By Murray Green

Our Lady of Mount Pleasant Grade 9 volleyball player Chloe McIndoe joined the Zone 4 team for the Alberta Winter Games in Medicine Hat Feb. 13 to 16. The power hitter, who is a member of the second place regional team, was the only local player to crack the lineup. “When I was younger in Grade 6 it was a fun after school program and I really liked it. In Grade 7, my neighbour (Carley Phillips) played on the team when she was in Grade 9 and I loved watching her. I wanted to be like her and looked up to her. I fell in love with volleyball then,” said Chloe. “She (Carley) was always helpful to me.” McIndoe lists her favourite sport as volleyball and she plays on a club team outside school sports. “I play club volleyball on the Vikings and that has improved my skills as well. Alberta Volleyball sent out a notice of when tryouts were, so I decided to go,” she added. Going to the Alberta Winter Games was a big step from the school season for Chloe, who feels that her experience of playing with better athletes will improve her skills.

“The techniques each coach teaches you are something you take in, intertwine and make your own,” she said. “Having different coaches has really helped me.” Chloe feels the Winter Games will help her make the transition to high school ball. “It will help me in high school next year. My goal is to play volleyball at the college or university level,” she said.

Meeting new athletes, bonding as a new team and being in a Games atmosphere were some of the things she enjoyed. “We stayed in a school with 200 other athletes,” she said. “We had opening ceremonies on Saturday and then played Sunday and Monday. We played in one of the first games. Our goal was to win a medal.”

By Murray Green Camrose athletes were joined by others from the surrounding area on the Zone 4 team at the Alberta Winter Games in Medicine Hat Feb. 13 to 16. Alpine skiing Maggie Smith of Viking and Hope Wiart of Castor competed in U14 female dual, giant and slalom categories. Ian Vincett of Galahad competed in the male events. Artistic gymnastics Teagan Rombough of Alliance competed in multiple events in gymnastics. Badminton Alyssa Henderson of Bashaw competed in both individual and team events. Biathlon Avry Niven of Ferintosh joined Michael Schroeder in the male individual and sprint events. Cross-country skiing Emily Eggink, Allyson Thain and Faith Taylor qualified in the 11-12 mini midget category in sprint and classic races. Leigh Humphrey, Natalie Thain and Robin Seversen were in the 13-14 age group in all three events. Lauren Payne qualified in the 15-16 female juvenile division in three events. Ben Eggink was entered in the 15-16 juvenile male division in classic, relay and sprint events. Hockey Aline Hironaka was one of the goalies on the bantam-aged hockey team. She was joined by Sydney Sorken of Sedgewick and Raice Szott of Daysland. Sam Popowich, Blake Sitler and Carson Taylor were on the Zone 4 team in the male tournament. Snowboarding Spencer Macaulay of Cadogan qualified for the 11-12 male slopestyle event. Volleyball Chloe McIndoe represented the zone in girls’ volleyball.

Winter Games call on two Bulldogs girls By Murray Green

Two players from the Camrose Bulldogs bantam double-A squad took time out from their regular club to play for the Zone 4 team at the Alberta Winter Games in Medicine Hat Feb. 13 to 16. Aline (Ally) Hironaka of Camrose and Raice Szott of Daysland of the Bulldogs were on the female hockey team. They were joined by local midget girls player Sydney Sorken, of Sedgewick. “I tried out two years ago and didn’t make it, but I tried out as an underage player,” said Ally, a goalie. “It’s every two years and I didn’t make it either, but we were the youngest players and we thought of making the team when we were older,” added Raice, a defenceman. Playing against boys prepared them for the Games. “It is tougher with more body contact against boys, so when you go against girls you don’t think anything of the contact. It is more of rubbing out someone that hitting them hard. You don’t get knocked off the puck as easy because you are ready for it,” said Raice. “Playing in the Winter Games was a chance to

get noticed. When we play against boys we don’t get noticed because people don’t know of you. This was good chance to be exposed to potential coaches.” “When we hit midget

age we will probably play girls’ hockey,” said Ally, who would like to one day play for Team Alberta. “Girls shoot different and not as hard. It is harder to play down than up.”

Ally has been called up to play on the bantam tripleA team on several occasions and enjoys the challenge. “Right now playing against boys helps us to play at a higher level than we

would against girls our age,” added Raice. The girls were not sure what to expect at the Winter games. “We only knew what our team was like and didn’t know where we fit in or if we could challenge for a medal,” said Raice. “We both wanted to excel individually and make some friendships,” added Ally. “I started off as a defenceman, but I didn’t like it. Then I switched to being a goalie and finally got good at that. I have enjoyed hockey since then.” The girls were hoping to use the Winter Games as a first step into their future in hockey. “We wanted to make an impression so we would get invited to try out for the U16 team,” said Raice. “My dad and brother played, so it was natural for me to play. I started as a forward, so I like to move up and help the forwards as a defenceman.” The girls were excited about their chance to participate in a Winter Games. “It had an Olympic feel with athletes staying together in little villages,” said Raice.

Trailer fire damages Camrose fire and police attended a fire call in the area of 52 Street and 53 Avenue on Feb. 10. Several emergency calls to 911 indicated a holiday trailer and garage were engulfed in flames, causing concern for surrounding properties. Investigation into the cause of the fire determined a renter at the home of the incident had been repairing the holiday trailer roof with a flammable substance when the trailer caught on fire. No injuries were reported, but there was extensive damage to the trailer, adjacent garages and surrounding property.

Maintain discipline and stay focused Reacting to short-term market events by making dramatic portfolio changes makes it difficult to stay on course to achieve your investment goals. While many investors feel they have to do something during a market downturn, history shows that the disciplined, patient investor will often be the one rewarded

when markets return to their upward path. Major declines have generally been followed by major recoveries. No one can precisely forecast market tops and bottoms, and trying to do so is extremely risky for two reasons: Reacting to a market decline by selling an investment guarantees a loss that

otherwise only existed on paper. Being out of the market can prevent you from participating in any gains when the market bounces back. No matter how the markets are behaving, your advisor can work with you to understand, anticipate and overcome the unique investment challenges that you will face over time.

Most Canadians have their tax deductions collected by their employer at source. Employers calculate the amount of deductions based on the information provided by an employee on a TD1 Form. It is quite common for employees to fill out only one TD1 Form and never update it when their tax situation changes. It is important to remember changes in your life impact how much tax is withheld. Though it is always nice to get a tax refund, it is even better not to pay the money to the government in the first place. If you get married or have children, your situation has changed. You should ask your payroll or human resources department for a new TD1 Form. The updated information should be used to recalculate the amount of tax withheld. Or if you are eligible for a new tax credit, you could also need to fill out a new TD1 Form. It can make a difference. Have you had any life changes in the last few months?

Are you a single parent with a child who turned 18 last year? Did you get married? Is your spouse earning significantly more income this year? Did your spouse quit his/her job to stay at home with the children? Are you caring for an elderly parent? If you answered yes to any of these questions, your tax situation has changed. It could be a good time to consult a tax professional to make sure you have the right amount of tax being withheld. A tax professional can talk about other credits and deductions that may affect you. Recession having an impact on Camrose housing market By Dan Jensen The Camrose housing market started to feel the pinch of the economic recession in the last three months of 2015. Altario Appraisals’ quarterly newsletter, The Altario Quarterly (January 2016), shows that the 51 sales of improved (the figure excludes vacant land) properties in Camrose between October and December 2015, was the lowest number of fourth quarter sales since 2007. “These (October to December) sales were exposed to the market an average of 59 days, which is actually less than the 90 DOM (days on the market) average in Q3 2015,” said Altario Appraisals owner and newsletter author Jerry Iwanus. “The reason for this seeming anomaly is explained, I think, partly by the restricted supply in certain price ranges and partly by some very realistic list prices, since most people who have to sell don’t want to sit on a property

for any length of time and then drop the price to try to move it.” The 322 sales that Altario tracked in Camrose in 2015 was the lowest annual activity since 2012, when it tracked 310. Sales price The newsletter shows that while the average sale price was down by two per cent in the fourth quarter from the quarter previous ($294,699 versus $300,685), it was still higher than it was a year ago when the fourth quarter average price was $284,615. “It is important to note that in five of the last six years the average price in Q4 was the lowest from among the four quarters in those respective years,” said Iwanus. “The 12 month rolling average in Q4 2015 is actually higher than it was last quarter ($297,788 vs. $296,267), an increase of just under one per cent and just under one per cent higher than it was a year ago ($297,788 vs. $294,900). It was the

second highest it has ever been in Q4 2015, but we would be wise not to read too much into that at this point, as the rolling average has been essentially flat for the past six quarters.” Median price The median price (the price at which half the sales in the period were higher and half were lower) was down for the second quarter in a row at $275,000 according to the newsletter, compared to $286,850 in Q3 and the all-time high of $308,250 in Q2. The rolling 12-month median price was $288,625, which was down slightly from the previous quarter but up 1.9 per cent from a year ago. “The most interesting part of the median price is that it was at the same level in Q4 2015 that it was in Q2 2007,” said Iwanus. Of the 53 sales of homes over $400,000 in Camrose during the past year, only eight occurred in the fourth quarter. “On a rolling 12-month

basis, sales volume for properties over $400,000 has held steady in that general range for almost two years, which tells us that buyers with means have held steady over that time but there are no more of them making their presence felt,” said Iwanus. “Those eight sales in a quarter are the lowest of any quarter since Q1 2014 and it will be interesting to see to what extent that figure changes over the next six months.” Oversupply The number of residential properties on the market via MLS (on the Central Alberta board and the Edmonton board combined) as of Jan. 1 of this year was 65, excluding vacant land, versus 108 at the beginning of October. “If we consider this relative to the 51 sales that occurred in Q4 2015, the market appears to be in oversupply, with the average DOM for those listings at 113 days,” said Iwanus. “However, only nine of those listings are in the $250,000

to $300,000 range, with 16 having sold in that range in Q4 2015 (average DOM: 40; average DOM for all sales in that quarter 59). Thus, while the market as a whole is in oversupply, that particular market segment is in the exact opposite situation. This, combined with the low number of sales in the $400,000 plus range suggests that, when people are moving, they’re not moving up to the higher price ranges.” Small towns Altario Appraisals recorded 219 sales in the small towns it tracks daily (as far north as Ryley, Holden and Viking in Beaver County, as far east as Hughenden in the MD of Provost, as far south as Veteran in the Special Areas, and as far west as Bittern Lake), with sales prices ranging from $10,000 to $585,000. “There were 272 total sales in 2014, so we are down 53 sales from last year,” said Iwanus.

January 8, 1940 ~ February 7, 2016 Merna was born to Martin and Alice Myrmo on January 8, 1940 in Camrose, Alberta and died at the age of 76 on February 7, 2016. Merna grew up in the Gladstone district and attended school in Gladstone until grade 8 and then finished school in Bawlf. Merna worked at Price’s Bakery in Camrose. She met Gordon Orr through his sister, Marion, who also worked there. Gordon and Merna were married on April 22, 1960. They had four children Mickey, Carrie, Colleen and Rodger. They lived on the Orr family farm for a short time until they moved to a farm near Donalda. Merna worked hard raising animals, milking cows, grain farming and had a large garden. Merna loved to join in with Gordon when he sang and played guitar. They hosted many family gatherings on the farm. Gordon passed away in 1987 and Merna sold the farm and moved to Camrose. Merna was very involved with Camrose Association for Community Living and for a period of time, sat on their board. Merna met Walter Kerr in 1988. They enjoyed camping together, travelling, playing games and going to the casino. Merna spent much of her life taking care of others and putting their needs ahead of her own. Several big names added to Big Valley Jamboree lineup By Murray Green

The 24th annual Big Valley Jamboree takes place July 28 to 31 and several artists have been added to the list of headliners. Randy Houser has been named to the line-up of the Big Valley Jamboree during the kick-off on July 28. Houser has a decade of experience playing in Nashville and will release

a new album in March. The Mississippi singer had three number one hits in a row after spending most his time writing songs for other performers. He is currently touring with Dierks Bentley. On Friday, July 29, Aaron Goodvin, Colin Raye, Jo Dee Messina and Bentley have been confirmed. Goodvin has performed

previously on the Molson Canadian Saloon stage. Messina is an empowering songstress who now runs her own record label, while Raye has a personal and humble style that has made him a fan-favourite for decades. Autumn Hill, Gary Allan and Blake Shelton are set for Saturday, July 30. Hill is returning to Big

Valley Jamboree after her 2013 debut. Allan, another alumni of the BVJ spotlight, will move the crowd with his mix of heartfelt ballads and honky-tonk hits. Closing out the concert weekend on the main stage on Sunday, July 31 will be John Michael Montgomery, High Valley, Sam Hunt and Carrie Underwood. Montgomery will share his style

of working man’s country that connects his audience to his music. High Valley, an Alberta band, will take the main stage with its signature blend of pop and bluegrass. Tickets for the 2016 Big Valley Jamboree are on sale visit www.BigValleyJamboree.com or call 1-888-4041234.

Kodiaks suffer four game losing streak By Murray Green

For the first time this season the Camrose Kodiaks have lost four straight games. Forced out of the EnCana Arena because of the Boston Pizza Cup, the Kodiaks will have to win on the road to turn things around. Camrose lost to the Calgary Canucks for the second game in a row by a 3-2 score on Feb. 6. Calgary scored three before the Kodiaks fought back to make a game of it. Defencemen Tyler Morrison and Jake Dube netted third period tallies to rally the troops, but the comeback bid was too late and a little short. Goalie Patrick Gora made 19 saves, while Camrose had 37 shots on the Canucks’ net. The Brooks Bandits stole two points from the Kodiaks in a 5-3 contest. Brooks broke a 1-1 tie with three goals in a row to change the momentum. Dube scored twice and Nelson Gadoury collected a single marker for the Kodiaks. Gora stopped 45 of 49 shots as he was pelted in the net. Camrose fired 34 shots at the Bandits’ net. Bear facts

Vikings take two games from Briercrest By Murray Green

The second place Augustana Vikings hockey team halted the Briercrest Clippers by cruising to two 6-4 wins on Feb. 5 and 6. In the first meeting, Beau Taylor, Jeff Lorenz and Evan Warmington notched markers in the opening period before Briercrest fought back with two goals. In the middle frame, the Clippers tied the game to scare the Vikings. Corey Kosloski netted a goal in the third, only to have Briercrest even the contest again. Jeremy Margeson and Pat Thompson-Gale found the mark later in the period to give Augustana the two points. Goalie Harry Fredeman made 29 of 33 saves for the Vikings, who had 36 shots on goal. In the rematch, the clubs followed a similar script. Warmington, Lukas Biensch, Thompson-Gale, Tanner Korchinski, Kosloski and Ryne Keller scored for the Vikings. Goalie Andy Williams turned away 27 of 31 shots, while Augustana fired 53 shots at the Briercrest net. The Vikings defeated the Concordia Thunder 2-0 and 5-3 in a series on Jan. 29 and 30 to give them a nine point cushion over the next team in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

GMC Sierra Raising the bar

John Marshall

By Dan Jensen The 2016 GMC Sierra Denali at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC raises the bar for capability, refinement and comfort. Sierra Denali makes a powerful first impression with a bold, confident and sculpted design with a redesigned front appearance, new Denali-exclusive grille, high performance LED headlamps, fog lamps and tail lamps, and available tri-mode power steps with articulating bed step for side access. The Sierra Denali Ultimate includes unique 22-inch wheels, chrome tow hooks, a sunroof, tri-mode power steps and a Driver Alert Package. Ultimate cabin Sierra Denali is engineered to create the ultimate cabin. Your solitude comes from triple door seals, soundabsorbing materials, and an inlaid design that fits the doors precisely into the body. Attention to detail is taken a step further with a softtouch instrument panel, burnished aluminum trim, contrasting stitching, and even more appointments. For your enjoyment are OnStar

4G LTE and built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, Bose sound, a nextgeneration Colour Touch Audio System with IntelliLink, and the turn-by-turn guidance of the Navigation System that displays 2-D or 3-D map graphics on a 203 mm diagonal centremounted screen. The screen also serves as your monitor for the available camera. Its dynamic grid lines provide the perfect target when backing up or hitching a trailer. To keep you powered up, the 2016 Sierra Denali adds a centre console, wireless charging mat for use with a variety of smartphones, and other compatible mobile devices. New for 2016 is support for the available Apple Car Play, as well as Android Auto. They’re smart ways to use your phone inside your Sierra. Now many of the functions you use your phone for – entertainment, communications and directions – appear on the built-in display. Just plug your phone into the USB outlet and go. Sierra Denali front seats have 12-way power adjusters, including four-way power lumbar control. The folding rear 60/40 split three

passenger bench includes child seat top tether anchor (Double and Crew Cab models only). Rear-seat comfort is the result of 1040 mm of leg room on Crew Cabs. And getting into and out of the second row in the Double Cab is easy, thanks to forward-hinged rear doors. The heated steering wheel, standard on Denali, adds warmth whenever you demand it. Standard power adjustable pedals are standard to help drivers of varying sizes sit at a comfortable distance from the steering wheel. Automatic dual-zone climate control has settings for the driver and front-seat passenger. An available centre floor console maximizes storage with a cavernous storage bin large enough for hanging files, a laptop or mobile device. Pockets on either side of the console and in the door panels offer grab and go convenience, and twin glove boxes give you and your companions personal storage areas. Performance Sierra’s 4.3 litre V6 and 6.2 litre V8 engines feature Direct Injection and continuously Variable Valve Timing,

as well as Active Fuel Management to deliver power and efficiency. No other competitive pickup offers, all of these technologies standard on its engines. In fact, the available 5.3 litre V6 offers both 355 horsepower and 10.6 litres per 100 km highway (4x2), while the 6.2 litre V8 offers 420 horsepower with 11.4 litres per 100 km highway (4x2). Both are paired with a Hydra-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission. Sierra Denali’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension system precisely speed-reads the road up to 1,000 times a second, responding to changes in the road long before you ever could. All you have to do is feel a more comfortable, controlled ride. A hydroformed fully boxed high strength steel frame provides Sierra with the ultimate in a solid foundation. The Eaton Automatic Locking Rear Differential directs power to the wheel with the most traction on loose gravel or slippery surfaces to keep Sierra moving continuously forward. The electric variableassist power rack-and-pinion steering system provides precise handling.

Keeping you safe Sierra’s body structure is engineered to help maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment in the event of a collision. All steel from wheel to wheel, it’s designed to crush in a controlled manner, absorbing as much of the energy as a crash as possible. Forward Collision Alert is available to help warm you when you’re rapidly approaching another vehicle and it appears a collision may be imminent. Lane Keep Assist helps Sierra stay in its lane and avoid unintentional lane changes. It assists by gently turning the steering wheel if Sierra approaches a detected lane marking without the turn signal being activated. The Safety Alert Driver Seat relays input from Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist and alerts the driver of potential traffic danger using directional vibration pulses within the seat cushion. See the 2016 GMC Sierra Denali at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 3850-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Augustana hosts Way Forward treaty rights seminar

By Lori Larsen The Way Forward: Envisioning Treaty Rights in Modern Resource Management conference will be held at University of Alberta Augustana from Feb. 19 to 21. “The conference developed in recognition of the challenges related to implementation of Alberta’s treaties in natural resource management,” explained Dr. Donelda Patriquin, University of Alberta, Augustana and Solstice Canada Corp. “The different understandings of the obligations identified in those treaties from Aboriginal and Canadian and provincial perspectives have often led to conflict – legal challenges, opposition to projects or confusion about ‘appropriate’ consultation. In part, the confusion arises because of a different understanding of environmental stewardship. “Our conference aims to develop a better understanding of treaties and natural resource management, from both perspectives, and explore areas where the treaties might be better incorporated in our management approaches to meet both interpretations of ‘stewardship.” First Nations leaders, government regulators, lawyers, academics familiar with legal interpretations to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal educators, environmental managers and consultation experts working with day-today management in this area will share information on the need and opportunity to incorporate treaty rights into Alberta’s natural resource management approach. “This collection of the different perspectives is unique, and we hope it will lead to a more informed approach to natural resource management going forward,” said Patriquin. Confirmed speakers include Dee Patriquin and Melanie Daniels from Solstice Canada/TSAG, who will discuss how theLeader consulBRH Barrhead tation system protects treaty Bonnyville Nouvelle rights,BNV Daniel Sims, University ofCMB Alberta lecturer, who Camrose Booster will share lessons from nonRMO Canmore Mountain O treatied lands, and Rocky William Littlechild, who will present LLB Lac La Biche Post on Treaty 6 and give the openLWS Lesleyville Western Star ing welcome. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Police advise you to lock your vehicle

By Lori Larsen Theft of vehicles and from vehicles is on the rise in Camrose. Last year theft of motor vehicles in the city of Camrose nearly doubled from 37 to 81 from that of previous years. As a result, one of the main objectives of Camrose Police Service in 2016 will be to focus on theft of motor vehicles. “The trend is not exclusive to just Camrose, it has also been observed in other communities in Alberta,” said Camrose crime prevention officer John Fernhout. “One of the biggest reasons we encounter stolen vehicles is a result of people leaving their keys in their running vehicle, especially in the winter.” Offenders steal vehicles for joyriding and transportation, to commit another crime, or to sell the parts to a chop shop. The major crimes unit’s goal is to increase awareness and offer proactive steps to vehicle owners in order to reduce the chances of having their vehicle stolen. To begin with, never leave the keys for your vehicle in the ignition or in a secondary location (hiding place) in your vehicle. Lock your vehicle doors and activate alarms if your vehicle is equipped with them. Never leave a vehicle unlocked, especially when running. Consider purchasing a remote vehicle starter or steering wheel lock. Where possible park your vehicle in a garage or in a well lit area. Remove all valuables from your vehicle when leaving it unattended. At home place your vehicle keys in a secure place, not hanging on a key hooks by the front door. “We strongly encourage residents to get in the habit of locking their vehicles,” said Fernhout “If an offender is watching and they see you leave your vehicle unlocked and running they are going to jump in your vehicle and steal it.” If you do observe any suspicious activity or behavior report it to Camrose Police Service at 780672-4444.

Science takes the stage at Augustana By Lori Larsen The fascinating world of science will be demonstrated by a group of Grade 7 students during the Augustana Science Fair held on Feb. 23 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Battle River School Division and Elk Island School Division have collaborated on the fair to bring together students, parents, teachers and administrators for a hands-on experimental display of science projects. Charlie Killam School and Our Lady Mount Pleasant School partnered with Augustana’s Learning Advising and Beyond office to connect local Grade 7 science classes with Augustana Community Service Learning students. “The projects are curricular based, what we are teaching them in class,” said Paul Lange, Charlie Killam science teacher. “There is a translation from the projects themselves to what we are teaching them in class so they take those concepts and do more with them.” The Augustana students have been working in the classrooms since the second week in Sepember, assisting Grade 7 teachers with mentoring students and helping them devise new and original projects for the fair. “There has been remarkable response from both sides,” commented Lange. “The students (Augustana) are heavily involved, they love what they are doing. Some of them are actually involved in educational courses so you can see how that might translate into a future career (in teaching). “The Grade 7 students enjoyed them (Augustana students) being here. “Some of the Grade 7 students actually see themselves being future Augustana students. BRCF awards $1,900 to Village of Rosalind

Battle River Community Foundation past chair Ken Drever presented a cheque to John Marshall, fire chief, Peter Tobler, deputy chief, and Jim McTavish, mayor of the Village of Rosalind.

The Battle River Community Foundation has awarded a $1,900 grant to the Village of Rosalind to assist with the costs of upgrading self-contained breathing apparatus for the Rosalind Volunteer Fire Department. The grant is from income from the Bernard Vos Memorial Fund and the Rosalind Community Fund. Both were created to provide grants to

projects and programs serving residents of Rosalind. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in East Central Alberta which benefit communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations who have cre-

ated endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $3,900,000 to support community facilities and programs such as the Rosalind Volunteer Fire Department.

EASTERN STAR SUPPORT Laurine Mingo, on behalf of Temple Chapter Order of Eastern Star of Camrose, presented a donation of $1,000 in February to Rhodelle Taylor, coordinator for the Camrose Community Cancer Center in the Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose.

Council amends cemetery bylaw By Dan Jensen

City council has amended the cemetery bylaw to incorporate a five per cent increase in fees for plots, continuous monument foundations and the opening and closing of graves. “This is a standard rate increase to align the bylaw with the 2016 budget,” said Camrose Community Services manager Ryan Poole. Starting Jan. 5, fees for a full grave plot went to $752 for a resident and $1,504 for a non resident. Fees for a half grave plot rose to $376 for a resident and $752 for a non resident. The fees for full grave and half grave plots for a veteran/member of the social service were increased to $376 and $188 respectively for residents of Camrose, and $752 and $376 respectively for non residents. The non refundable registration fee (existing plot of scattering area went to $107 for a resident and $214 for a non resident. Opening and closing fees rose to $931 for a grave up to six feet in depth, and $1024 for a grave eight feet in depth. The cost of burial of ashes by City staff was increased to $320, while the cost of burial of ashes in the scattering area only went to $107. Poole said the residential rate is the rate that is subsidized by the City. “If we bring that residential rate up to the non residential rate that is the cost of recovery. Right now the cost recovery isn’t taking into account the extra cost of staff here at City Hall.” Bus maintenance Council approved a motion to have the maintenance of the new bus leased to the Rose City Handivan Society funded by the unallocated contingency funds for public transit. “I can’t see it (the amount for maintenance) being more than $7,000 to $10,000,” said City manager Malcolm Boyd. The City of Camrose has entered into an agreement with the Rose City Handivan Society for the provision of a transportation service to various seniors’ groups. The agreement provides grant funding of $80,000 per year to the society in return for a bus service dedicated to the various seniors’ facilities. It also makes the City responsible for all maintenance related to the leased bus. The contingency fund for public transit totals $120,000. Sandwich boards Council rescinded a motion that administration approve temporary sandwich board sign permits to non profit organizations with the provisions that the sign be exhibited for no more than two days and that the location of the signs be restricted to areas away from major intersections. “Now that the new land use bylaw has been adopted, the temporary/sandwich board signs for registered non profit organizations in the public right of way policy has been folded into the land use bylaw,” said director of development and planning Aaron Leckie. “The applicable regulations can be found in Section 5.0 Development Permit Applications and Section 12.0 Sign Regulations.”
