Special Olympics Fun Special Olympics athletes from Camrose and area participate in an impressive variety of sports. Basketball, over the winter months, is a wonderful way for athletes to socialize, have fun, improve their hand and eye coordination, burn off calories and improve their skills. It’s always extra special for local Special Olympics basketball teams to have the Camrose Kodiaks, Augustana Vikings or members of Camrose Police Services join them on the court for an afternoon of enjoyment. This Sunday has been lovingly marked on calendars for a long time. At 2 p.m. on March 13th Camrose Police Service personnel will be on hand at Sparling School gymnasium to interact with and play against Special Olympics basketball players. C.P.S. is one of the most active year-round supporters of the local athletes and the unique program.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson I could have danced all night Two weekends ago I had the great joy of attending the musical My Fair Lady. It was presented by the Churchmice Players, Camrose’s venerable amateur theatre group, at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Camrose’s Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. It was a fabulous evening on so many levels, starting with; I like George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion on which the musical is based. The real joy was not actually the story, though I like it a lot. The real joy was that I got to see family members and long-time friends stretching themselves through acting, singing and dancing on stage. Wow! It was surreal to see them in character, while knowing the kind of people they are when they aren’t acting (at least, I don’t think they’re acting). They did such a wonderful job, sometimes I even forgot they were relatives and friends! A second joy was the professional quality of the production. There is so much talent in our East Central Alberta rural and urban communities. It was not just the people on stage, either. The costumes were stunning. The sets, sounds and lighting created the perfect atmosphere, whether it was depicting a London square, Professor Higgins’ drawing room or the Royal Ascot horse races. The choreography was amazing, especially considering the large cast, most of whom have never taken any kind of dance training. I even loved the promotion poster! All evening I felt great pride, even though I had nothing to do with creating any of it! A third joy was the Performing Arts Centre. As far back as I can remember, our community has had great sports facilities but not so much in the way of facilities for the arts. I remember a quarter of a century ago being on a volunteer committee attempting to get a performing arts centre. When the new Performing Arts Centre opened last year on the Augustana campus – after finessing collaboration between multiple government bodies and local organizations, and phenomenal effort by hundreds of volunteer fundraisers – it was the culmination of a decades-old dream. It’s not the first performance I’ve seen in the Performing Arts Centre, but I’m still thrilled that the community now has a facility created specifically for the purpose of performing arts. I’m grateful for the creativity and ingenuity of local people that has made a gym, banquet room, church basement, community hall work for drama, dance, music and other performing arts over the years – and that is still happening and will continue to happen. Still, all evening, I relished the sets that could come down from the ceiling and then be lifted up, the comfortable tiered seats, a live orchestra in the orchestra pit and the excellent acoustics. I was thrilled to bask in the realization of a decades-old dream of a professional quality performing arts facility in my home town. A fourth joy was seeing, out of the corner of my eye, the retired drama teacher who inspired a couple of generations to be passionate about theatre. Many of those former high school students, dating back to the 1970s, formed the original core of Churchmice Players. I didn’t get to speak with the retired teacher in person, but hope he is gratified by his legacy. I also acknowledge teachers who have come after him and continued the tradition. ***

One of the My Fair Lady songs is “I could have danced all night.” Among the words are, “I could have danced all night, I could have danced all night, and still have begged for more. “I could have spread my wings, and done a thousand things, I’ve never done before.” That’s how I felt at the end of the evening! ***

A few years ago, I had occasion to ask the board members of a local organization, “What have you learned so far?” One of the board members replied, “Never take the community for granted, and never underestimate the community.” I think he was on to something. Area Structure Plan Open House Camrose residents and stakeholders are invited to attend an open house to review and provide feedback on the draft East Gateway Area Structure Plan (ASP). The open house will be held on Thursday, March 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino (320148 Avenue).

The East Gateway Area Structure Plan is a plan that will address long term planning and development of 400 hectares of land located north of Highway 13 and east of 39 Street. The intent of the ASP is to facilitate the development of a new industrial business hub with a commercial component in Camrose.

The draft ASP will be presented to City council in spring 2016. Should you be unable to attend the open house, but would like further information or to comment on the East Gateway Area Structure Plan, contact Francisca Karl, City of Camrose long range planner, at fkarl@camrose.ca or 780672-4428.

Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. A letter of Appreciation

To the several hundred people who enjoyed the Rosalind Agricultural Society Dinner Theatre and play which was held the last week in January, we would like to offer our thanks for your support. The gales of laughter that could be heard throughout the performance confirm that you enjoyed yourselves immensely. The compliments heard about the meal tell us that the roast beef supper was superb. Many of you may not be aware that this bi-annual play is produced and the meal supplied totally by community volunteers. Uncountable hours are donated by the cast and crew as they

begin their work in the fall, memorizing lines and creating the set. The time commitment increases as they practice more often in the last month before production, and the set, sound and lighting are constructed. The meal is prepared and served by community members; shifts of people doing prep work like peeling carrots and potatoes in the morning and more cooking, serving, and cleaning at the end of the day. These are all local Rosalind people volunteering their time to make the play such a resounding success. The strength of Rosalind lies in its community members. People enjoy the opportunity to work together in events such as this, and the proceeds support local initiatives, improving the quality of life for all. On behalf of the Rosalind Agricultural Society, I would like to sincerely thank all of you who had a part in the dinner theatre production of Never Kiss a Naughty Nanny this year. Dorothy Marshall, Rosalind Photo and ski hill

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ron Pilger for his fine

photography (Camrose Booster Feb. 16). I too recently viewed the ski lift remains from a distance and am still convinced that an idea I have would be more attractive. My suggestion is to take down that structure and replace it with an all weather white fence with a three to four foot high railing around the cement base that is there, leaving a small gate on one side. In the centre of the cement pad build either a flat or five to six foot formed figure of a skier holding a pair of skis and a plaque with a short history of the ski hill. This could be made from material of the ski lift, as much as possible. Then fasten benches to the side of the fence for sitting on to view our beautiful city and surroundings. Graduated steps down to meet the trail, four solar lights on the fence corners, and four to six perennial roses a distance from the fence. This shouldn’t be too expensive and a larger swimming pool would be needed more for friendly users than skiers. Thank you. Alice Hill, Camrose

Const. Rolfe named Top Cop by Camrose Kiwanis Club By Murray Green

The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club celebrated the selection of Camrose Police Service Const. Matt Rolfe as the third recipient of the Top Cop award at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino on Saturday, Feb. 27. “Police work is hours of boredom interspersed with moments of terror,” said Kiwanis past governor Roy Bird. “The person that knows this personally is Matt’s boss Police Chief Darrell Kambeitz. “We are proud of this award and proud of our participation this evening. Policing is challenging, frustrating, very seldom rewarding career. Not too often do we get to see the positive outcomes. Our interaction with people is very short lived. Very rarely do people phone us to say what a great day they are having or stop by the station just to say hello,” said Chief Kambeitz. “We deal with people in conflict or crisis. Posi-

tive community engagement takes many years. People gravitate to those individuals they have come to know. People know Matt as the mentor, coach, official and volunteer.” Const. Matt Rolfe is a strong community builder who focuses on assisting the youth of our community. Const. Rolfe is a 12 year veteran of the Camrose Police Service and is currently in the patrol division. He just completed a tenure with the K9 unit with the police service dog Mishka until she recently retired. “The things that Matt does makes it so much easier for all of us. For that Matt, what you do reflects positively on the police and we thank you for that,” added Chief Kambeitz. The officer enjoys the interaction with youth on a regular basis. In his spare time he also chooses to mentor the youth of our community in a variety of ways. He has provided K9 demonstrations for youth, coordinated

ride-a-longs and has attended schools with the dog to meet and speak with children of various grades and ages. “We want to congratulate Matt for not just being a police officer, but for what you do in this community. Const. Matt Rolfe is a strong community builder,” said Kiwanis member Weston Voytechek. “The nominations come in from the general public. Of the three nominations for Matt, two were from young people.” As an on-ice hockey official he has volunteered time and knowledge as an off-ice supervisor for young officials to aide and mentor them in the development of their officiating skills. “There are other police officers that deserve this award, so to be honoured is humbling,” said Const. Rolfe. He also volunteered with the MS Society, Camrose Women’s Shelter Society (Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes), Charity Checkstop, Free the Finest event, Alberta Junior Hockey League, an initiation

hockey team (as coach), The Black and Blue Campaign, and a Habitat for Humanity build. “After 10 years in the community, I went to the chief and proposed a citizenship award for a member of the Kodiaks. It is a way of giving back for what they do,” he added. Const. Rolfe has mentored Camrose Kodiaks hockey players and received approval from the Camrose Police Service to create a yearly Camrose Police Service Citizenship Award to present to a player. He has taken the initiative to recognize players who exemplify good citizenship as demonstrated by excellent behaviour that follows positive values. “A lot of my police dog demonstrations were done on my day off, but I felt it was important to create that connection between the police service and the people in the community. Establishing a trust between the youth and

the police is important,” said Const. Rolfe. “Const. Rolfe helps the Kodiaks personally. He takes players on ride-alongs and he is another figure other than coach Bo (Boris Rybalka) that is there for us when we have tough times. He is always there with open doors. He goes above and beyond for all of us,” said former Kodiaks’ player Adam deChamplain. “He helps because he loves to do it. He is a big part of the community. I remember the first time I met him. He came to me and said he wanted to help because we do a lot for the community. From that day forward it has been a marriage if you will. He goes beyond his job and helps players, the team and other things that we are involved with. The thing that amazes me is that he does it because he cares.” The Kiwanis Club, along with those who nominated Const. Rolfe, recognize the value of building good habits in local youth.

The City of Camrose will provide each eligible household (single family homes, duplex and four-plex units within the City) with: • One 240 L (black) waste collection cart • One 240 L (green) compost collection cart These carts will be delivered during the month of April (the schedule can be viewed at www.camrose.ca). All carts will be dropped at the front of the property, regardless of where waste is picked up, to help the contractor confirm the address. Each of the waste carts has a unique serial number and embedded chip associated with a specific property address. Once delivered to a property they must remain at that address regardless of property owner. The compost and waste carts are picked up by automated collection trucks. These trucks require one metre clear on all sides and above each cart so the automated arm has room to maneuver. Carts will only be emptied if the one-metre-clear zone is followed. On collection day, set out the carts according to the collection calendar for your neighbourhood. Your collection date will not change.

Elk Island board rejects council proposal for school co-location

SNOW GOLF

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Kirsten Freeborn of Camrose lined up for the perfect shot down the snowy fairway at hole five located at Jubilee Park during the snow golf tournament for Habitat for Humanity held on Feb. 27. Teams teed off at a variety of locations throughout Camrose enjoying the warmer temperatures, not at all bothered by the lack of snow at some holes.

Public speaking night at Round Hill The Round Hill 4-H Multi Club held its public speaking night on Feb. 24. Members and Cleaver Kids spoke on a variety of topics and received suggestions from judges, who generously gave of their time. Anna Snydmiller placed first in intermediate group and Natalie Than second. The junior first place winner was Alyvia Huard, with Allyson Thain placing second. The first place speakers went on to the district level, which was held at Bawlf Community Hall at 1 p.m. March 5.

By Lori Larsen Elk Island Catholic School responded to a letter from Camrose City council on Dec. 18 recommending EICS and Battle River School boards work together on the co-location of a new EICS high school. During the Committee of Whole meeting on Feb. 16 representatives from EICS reported on the reasons for the decision of the board to reject council’s recommendation and further proposed a partnership opportunity with Camrose Community Centre for an exclusive site. The proposal of co-location at the existing site of the Camrose Composite High School was presented to the EICS board of trustees and was unanimously rejected. Justine Wright, board chair, EICS, reported to council the rationale behind the boards decision.” “We (EICS) look at the fundamental principles of our Catholic schools when operating our schools,” she said. “We believe in and operate under the Alberta Catholic School Trustees Association (ACSTA) principles for a Catholic school facility in Alberta. “We (EICS) look at this being defined and characterized as being Christ-centred, an instrument of the church, focused on the development of the whole human person, committed to the inculturation of life and faith and permeated in every aspect of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Wright recited the fundamental principles identified by the EICS trustees and Alberta Catholic Bishops, reiterating that these principles are the foundation for building Catholic schools. “Ultimately this is why our board has made a decision to not co-locate on the same site as the Camrose Composite (High School),” she said. Ryan Stierman secretary treasurer, EICS, further reported to council the reasons why the proposed co-location site with Camrose Composite

High School would not be the best solution. “With the initial proposal there are going to be significant issues in operating two educational programs on one site with potentially 2000 students,” he said. Stierman indicated some of the other possible issues with co-location on the current Camrose Composite site included a significant loss of trees, soccer fields and green space, increased traffic and noise to adjacent neighbourhood and retirement complex, significant distance from playing fields and the integration of both schools (it would go against the principles of the Catholic school divisions). On that note, Stierman proposed to council the colocation of the new EICS high school with the Camrose Community Centre on the Rudy Swanson site. “This is definitely the preferred option of the board of trustees and the EICS administration because we actually see significant advantages to this option,” he said. The advantages reported by EICS include: the opportunity for joint use of school and City amenities, affording the new high school the opportunity to share programming space with Our Lady Mount Pleasant – specifically the modernization and addition of Career Technology studies space; additional paved parking for the sports fields and limiting the impact on residential areas; less use of green space; and the availability of land for the forecasted construction start date. Stierman provided two current examples where EICS school sites have joint locations with municipal recreational complexes within the province. “We combine our resources and actually create cost savings for both organizations. We have an agreement for snow clearing and an agreement for electricity,” said Stierman

“Through our relationship with the municipality we have worked out a reciprocal use agreement that in turn will allow for better access to facilities for residents and better access for students.” Stierman concluded with a request to have the City work with EICS on further investigating the possibility of the new high school co-locating on the Rudy Swanson site. Councilor Max Lindstrand questioned Stierman on the current use of the Camrose Community Centre. “Are you aware that the Battle River school division has a long term agreement to rent space at the community centre with the PACE Outreach School and how would that compare in mix usage?” Stierman replied with 2014-15 registration numbers that indicated there was an enrollment in the PACE school of 160 students who are only doing one or two courses. “We are not talking about the situation with Camrose Composite where you could potentially have 2,000 students operating on one site,” he said. Councillor Wayne Throndson questioned whether it is a numbers issue on the CCHS site. “I think the numbers for PACE, we were told this morning, were about 263,” he said. “So is it the fact that there are 800 students at the Composite that is the problem and 263 at the PACE is okay? “I’m trying to understand the rationalization, because it seems to me on the surface there is not too much difference between sharing a school site with the Composite or sharing a school space with PACE High School.” Stierman responded by referring to the size of the PACE program already offered at the Community Centre and that the two schools would never share programing. Council agrees to playground funding request By Dan Jensen

City council has agreed to contribute $7,500 towards a St. Patrick Elementary School playground safety improvement project. “I support the idea,” said councillor Max Lindstrand in discussions at council’s Feb. 1 meeting. “The school facilities receive a lot of use.” St. Patrick Elementary School Parent Council chair Tracey Burnett told council in a letter dated Jan. 15 that, for a number of years, the two playground surfaces at St. Pat’s have deteriorated to the point of being substandard.

“Summarizing CSA standards, the protective surface of the playground is to be 30 centimetres in depth, non compacting, clean and shock absorbing,” said Burnett. “Regrettably, some of the material used over the past few years to band-aid the solution did not meet the above specifications. Consequently, and in consultation with safety advisors, St. Pat’s was forced to temporarily close its playground from Oct. 19 to 30, 2015. In order to reopen the playground in a timely manner, the St. Pat’s School Council sponsored a temporary solution (which is expected to last approximately 12 months), and make a commitment

to spearhead fundraising towards the installation of a protective surface that will meet CSA standards and finally rectify the safety issues at both playgrounds. Unfortunately, none of the materials required are inexpensive and this has been the primary stumbling block to rectify the situation in the past.” Burnett noted that the St. Pat’s playground area is one of only two playgrounds in the northeast part of Camrose. “The playground is well utilized, not only by school students, but by the children and families that live in the area,” she said. “Research has shown that play is a

healthy way for children to develop physical, social and cognitive skills, as well as establish fitness habits to help combat the epidemic of health risks due to non-exercise that are so prevalent in our society.” Council set a precedent in 2015 when it agreed to provide $8,000 for the new playground at Jack Stuart School. “In the past the City has taken the approach of supporting to some level school playground projects in lieu of having a City of Camrose playground in that neighbourhood,” said Community Services general manager Ryan Poole. “In this particular case the City of Cam-

rose has very little in the form of playground infrastructure in this part of the city.” The City of Camrose contribution will be funded from the newly created Community Support budget (formerly the Community Events budget). “We pursued the history of the Community Events budget and really it is a name that grew over the last couple of years from where it was,” said Mayor Norm Mayer. “Some of the things we have done in 2016 really aren’t community events, so what is being suggested basically is that we amend the name to being Community Support.”

Elk Island high school Continued from page 8 As well, being close to Our Lady Mount Pleasant would provide a substantial opportunity to keep the Catholic faith permeated throughout the entire EICS program. “From what I saw in your two exhibits and what your architect laid out for a potential school on the Composite site, it didn’t look like there was sharing space under those plans either. It looked liked two self contained models of schools on the Composite site,” said Throndson. “In order to keep it self contained then there are substantial operational issues that exist,” responded Stierman.

“The board has discussed this issue in lengths and wants to work with the City of Camrose to come up with something that will actually benefit all parties. “We definitely hope that the City will be amicable in working towards a solution.” Mayor Norm Mayer said there is some reluctance about the location by the Community Centre because of the long range plans the City has as far as development around there and attachment to that structure. “Those are the things we will have to consider,” he said. “We will review it and will get back to you in a short period of time.”

Federal taxes to offer a break

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has crunched the numbers and the new Trudeau government’s tax measures will mean a tax break for most Canadians in 2016. The centrepiece measures are changes to income tax rates, with a reduction on the tax rate for income earned between $45,282 and $90,563, which drops from 22 per cent to 20.5 per cent, while a new tax bracket will apply on income over $200,000, raising the rate from 29 per cent to 33 per cent. The Family Tax Cut, which allowed couples with children under 18 to split their income, resulting in a tax credit of up to $2,000, has also been eliminated. Additionally, the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) will be replaced with the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) starting in July, 2016. The CCB differs from the UCCB in that it is tax-free, and means-tested with larger payouts going to lowerincome households.

As part of its annual New Year’s Tax Changes report, the CTF has calculated the tax impact for families for 2016 for 34 hypothetical Canadian households. Some highlights include: $1,597 in savings for a twochild, single-income family in Ontario earning $30,000 per year, $1,414 in savings for a two-child, two-income family in Saskatchewan earning $80,000 per year, $164 in savings for a twochild, one-income family in Quebec earning $100,000 per year, $7,643 in higher taxes for a two-child, oneincome family in Alberta earning $250,000 per year. “The range varies widely, from a few hundred to about $2,000 in savings, but it’s clear that most Canadian families will have more money in their pockets as a result of these tax changes,” said CTF federal director Aaron Wudrick. “Dual-income households with children, where each spouse earns a relatively equal amount, will benefit most.”

Wudrick also noted that for all the good news, high-income earners face substantial tax hikes, while the rollback of Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) annual contribution limits from $10,000 to $5,500 will also reduce future savings for millions of Canadians. Additionally, bracket creep will continue to punish all taxpayers in Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, as well as highincome earners in Ontario and New Brunswick. “While most provinces adjust their tax brackets for inflation, ensuring that salary increases that match inflation don’t push earners into a higher income tax bracket, provinces that don’t index punish workers and leave them worse off,” said Wudrick. “It’s shameful a province like Nova Scotia will squeeze an additional $20 from those who only make $30,000 a year with this hidden tax hike.”

Harpoonist and Axe Murderer return for concert By Murray Green

The Rose City Roots Music Society is bringing The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer back to Camrose on an return visit. The duo will be at the Bailey Theatre for a show on Friday, March 11, at 8 p.m. Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers will be armed with a collection of harmonicas, plenty of foot percussion and a telecaster to perform in the traditional deep blues style. The duo met over music while recording a radio jingle. When it came time to name the band, they were inspired by a lyric from Kris Kristofferson’s “Bobby McGee” that references the blues harp, (‘I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana’) and axe, a common term for the guitar. Hall provides the rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Rogers plays the guitar and drums with his feet. The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer released their self-titled album in 2008, followed in 2012 by the widely acclaimed Checkered Past. Their third album, A Real Fine Mess was released in 2014. The band was increasingly inspired not only by the electric blues of the 50s, 60s and 70s, but also by the music that goes way back in time. Both received considerable recognition with a nomination for Blues Album of the Year at the Junos in 2014. They’ve shared the stage with David Wilcox, The Sheepdogs (who also appeared in Camrose in the Roots series) and Serena Ryder. They’ve also had songs featured on television shows such as the CSI, NCIS New Orleans, The Good Wife and Blue Bloods. Tickets are available at the Bailey Box Office or online.

Nurse McLean returns to assist others on Mercy Ship

By Murray Green

Arlene McLean from Bawlf left her heart in Africa three years ago. Now she is returning to the country to continue her calling to assist needy patients on the world’s largest charity hospital ship, the Africa Mercy. The Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose operating room nurse joins about 400 international volunteers in providing health care. McLean, who previously volunteered for the charity in the Congo in 2013, left on Valentine’s Day, bringing her loving heart and skills to Tamatave, Madagascar for a month. “People from all over the globe finance their own way to come to serve with all the ability they have been given. Volunteers come as individuals from all kinds of backgrounds and become a part of a single living entity,” said McLean. The vessel is run by medical charity Mercy Ships, which uses volunteer driven hospital ships to provide free life changing health care for thousands in impoverished nations. “Most cases are more

Photos supplied Arlene McLean, right, joined medical staff from around the world to assist with surgeries on the Mercy Ship named Africa Mercy. This her second trip to Africa to help less fortunate people receive life altering medical attention.

complex than we in our western affluent culture would encounter,” explained McLean. “The kinds of procedures done within these

small operating room theatres is mind boggling.” The Africa Mercy functions like a small town, which requires many differ-

ent departments and skills to run properly. Although the main purpose of the ship is to be a hospital for patients to receive free health care

and surgery, it is a community that lives together, works together and is driven to be there for the purpose of bringing hope and healing to those less fortunate. “The ship is a labor of love. There is so much to absorb from the experience,” added McLean. With lack of doctors, finances and facilities, Africans face conditions that aren’t seen in Canada. Massive tumours, cleft lips and palates, cataracts and bowed legs are just some of the conditions that threaten the health and dignity of the Malagasy people. During the vessel’s stay in the port of Tamatave, Mercy Ships plans to provide over 2,200 surgeries for adult and child patients onboard, treat over 10,000 at a land-based dental clinic and provide holistic health care education to Malagasy health care professionals. The Africa Mercy would not be able to deliver health care services without its crew of exemplary volunteers like McLean. Mercy Ships uses hospital ships to deliver free, world-class health care services, build capacity, and assist with sustainable development in the developing world. Founded in 1978 by Deyon and Don Stephens, Mercy Ships has worked in more than 70 countries providing services valued at more than $1 billion, with more than 2.35 million direct beneficiaries. Each year Mercy Ships has more than 1,200 volunteers from over 40 nations. Professionals including surgeons, dentists, nurses, health care trainers, teachers, cooks, seamen, engineers, and agriculturalists donate their time and skills to the effort. Mercy Ships seeks to become the face of love in action, bringing hope and healing to the poor.

Exercise program for people with Parkinson’s disease We dance, we sing, we do physical therapy. What may look like a dance party twice a week at the University of Alberta’s Augustana campus in Camrose is actually an elective class in Parkinson’s for physical therapy students from the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Taught by physical therapist Connie Harrison, 15 people with Parkinson’s disease attend an exercise therapy program that uses rhythmical movements to music for therapy, while physiotherapy students from the U of A work with each of them to increase overall function and learn how to manage symptoms. The class currently runs Monday and Thursday afternoons “ There’s never been

an exercise program for Parkinson’s in the Camrose area,” says Connie Harrison, physical therapy instructor. “We designed the class to help clients with Parkinson’s increase overall function and we’ve seen these improvements over time – like being able to get out of a chair or walk to the car.” “Working out to rhythm initiates movement – big movements and largerange motion,” says Ciaran O’Flynn, first-year MSc Physical Therapy student, Camrose cohort. “There are only five students in the class and we really get the opportunity to be hands-on with the patients.” Harrison says the goal for the students is to become familiar with Parkinson’s itself, understand

the assessment, design the assessment forms and pick out appropriate outcome measures for Parkinson’s. “It was great to put what we learn in the classroom to use. It’s really nice to get the chance to do clinical work, and see what a positive difference it actually makes,” O’Flynn says. For Sharon Vestby who has Parkinson’s, the program and students have definitely made a difference. “The exercising is wonderful,” she said. “You feel alive when you’re able to move. It’s a good thing to have in Camrose, and it’s been fun being part of a group – we all have the same things to deal with.” The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine’s Camrose satellite at Augustana cam-

pus currently has 24 physiotherapy students, 12 in first year and 12 in second year. Augustana students attend most classes via real-time, high-definition video conferencing. Students in Camrose have a local instructor or teaching assistant for each course. The synchronized distance learning technology allows U of A students to train through lectures and labs across three campuses: Edmonton, Camrose and Calgary. Forty-six students have graduated from the physiotherapy program in Camrose and are currently working as physical therapists in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, Centennial Centre in Ponoka and more.

Harrison herself graduated from the University of Alberta’s physical therapy program in 1980. She worked in acute care and rehabilitation for 12 years, but stepped away for 22 years after that to take on the adventure of being a mom and homeschool teacher to her five children. “I decided to go back into practice last January, and registered for the reentry program through the University of Alberta’s physical therapy bridging program,” explains Harrison. “It was an arduous program in a short period of time, but the hard work certainly paid off. “In spring 2015 I passed all my exams and became a licensed physical therapist again!”

By Lori Larsen As the weather warms we start thinking about cleaning out the garage, basement or attic. But before you toss those items, you may want to think twice. They could be worth something. Sheldon Smithens, former co-star of the television series Canadian Pickers, which also aired in Europe, Australia and Japan as Cash Cowboys, has made a lucrative business out of buying and selling antique items. He will be in this neck of the woods, making an appearance at the Camrose Regional Trade Show at CRE on March 11 from 4 to 5 p.m., then back again from 7 to 8:30 p.m. “I am going to do a couple of things,” said Smithens in reference to his appearance at the Camrose Trade Show. “I am going to do a presentation on my Canadian Pickers experience and I’ll talk about my background. Then I will talk about how the show came about and how my involvement came about and give people an idea of how a television show of that nature, reality TV, was filmed.” The television show featured Smithens and his cohost, Scott Cozens, travelling across Canada in search of rare or unique collectables in peoples’ basements, garages, attics, barns, sheds, outbuildings, warehouses, storage units, and in some cases, flea markets, yard sales and antique shops. The two Calgary based hosts donned Cowboy hats and western wear, adding a bit of their own folksy charm to the show. “I will take a break, then come back and meet people on a one-on-one to answer questions or, if anybody wants, let them take a photograph,” said Smithens. Smithens spoke about the success of the show and the memories it created for him. “There was not a single episode that didn’t happen without so much hilarity,” he said. “It was a lot of fun and there were a lot of interesting characters. Most of the people we met were pretty unique.” Smithens said the merchandise they dealt with ranged from a piece of highly sought after Alberta ammolite to a dinosaur egg picked in Prince Edward Island. “We hauled a dinosaur egg across the country. “It was quite humorous at the time. We promised to

take good care of it and we had so much fun with it. “A couple of weeks after we arrived in Calgary the seller (of the egg), who we bought some other amazing items from, got seller’s remorse over the dinosaur egg. So we immediately sent it right back to

It was our gift back to this fellow in Prince Edward Island. “That prehistoric dinosaur egg travelled the length of the country twice.” The television show can be attributed in part to a growing interest in antique buying and selling, as well as contribut-

ing to more interest in collectables that may have otherwise been considered unimportant. “We (the show) probably opened the door for a lot more people to be out there buying,” said Smithens. Continued on page 18

Canadian picker Continued from page 17 “We would encounter a lot of people who said they are doing it (buying/selling) part time and we even had more than the occasional person say that is what they are doing full time as a consequence of the show.” Smithens remarked on merchandise that maintains interest today. “People of my parents’ generation had china, silver and crystal, all those things that you would entertain with. The next generation and subsequent generations have absolute zero interest in all those kinds of things so they are not hanging onto them. “Other items that we (the show) exposed a market for with pickers were advertising and oil and gas items, those sorts of things. “I think people are actually hanging on to them, passing them down to the next generation.” The series ended filming in Nov., 2013, and the final episodes aired on Dec. 23, 2013. Smithens remains busy doing appraising and pricing for estate sales, working with

museums on evaluations of donations, and some auctioneering. He also shares his knowledge and interest in antiques by teaching continuing education courses in antiques collecting at the University of Calgary, as well as conducting other various presentations and programs at places including the Calgary Public Library, Calgary Board of Education, and Calgary Exhibition and Stampede (Western Show Showcase). He gives back to his community by conducting benefit auctions for a number of organizations. Even if you have not had an opportunity to catch one of the Canadian Pickers shows on television, Smithens’ entertaining personality and amusing stories are well worth a visit to the trade show. “There seems to be a correlation between collectors and the colourful side of humanity,” said Smithens. “We had a really good young television crew travelling all over Canada and we had a lot of fun doing the show.” The trade show will run March 11 to March 13.

Amber Marshall of the television show Heartland will share her experiences as Amy at the trade show on March 12.

Heartland television star Amber Marshall will be visiting the Camrose Regional Trade Show at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on March 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. Marshall has completed nine seasons as the character Amy on the popular show that is filmed in southern Alberta. “If all goes well in the spring, we will be going into filming our 10th season. It’s a dream come true, nothing that I ever expected, to be a decade on a single show. It is an achievement in itself,” she said. Amber auditioned for the show when she was 19 years old and living in Ontario. “When they accepted me for the role they flew me out and put me up in a condo in Calgary. Nobody thought it would go more than a year or two,” shared Amber. “I went back to Ontario the first two years during the winter break. Then I realized how much I really loved Alberta and how it fit my lifestyle. I decided to re-locate and be here all year. I thought if the show ended I could still stay out here and look for work.” Soon a condo didn’t cut it for her outdoor lifestyle. She purchased a ranch southwest of Calgary to raise her horses, cats and dogs. “I believe my character and my life blend into one and sometimes I can’t tell where one starts and the other ends. It has blurred together over the years and the writers have added things from stories that I told about my experiences. Coming here I have adapted the lifestyle that my character lives,” explained Amber. “My character Amy has really grown over the 10 years. She started as a 16-year-old and has gone from a teenager to an independent young woman. I think a lot of young women look up to me because I have grown up with them on television.” Amber tries to be a good role model on and off the set. “It is a wholesome show

and I want to set a good example for all women. I’m proud of the fact people come to me and tell about how they learned to ride horses, or have stayed clean because of me and the decisions that were made on the show.” With all of the shows on television that bend the rules, Amber is thankful that Heartland is natural and inspiring. Ponoka’s Shaun Johnston helped her in the beginning. “What an incredible character because he is Jack in every sense of the way. It is so nice to have a family atmosphere on television and he really brings that. We have fun on the set, laugh and joke. It feels like we are a family,” Amber said. “Everyone gets along so well, it doesn’t feel like work.” She added a dog to her farm that was rescued and Amber didn’t feel right about leaving it home by itself all day when she was at work. “I started bringing my border collie on set because she needed some confidence building,” she said. “They asked me if she could go on the show, but the dog wasn’t ready for that. So I brought my Shepherd Remy out and she is now a regular cast member.” Amber wanted to visit Camrose to support the local fan base in this area. “I like to visit various places and be able to talk to people that I haven’t met before,” she said. “It is a way to give back. Canadians have supported the show and this past season’s numbers were the highest ever. It is part of my responsibility to meet the people that watch the show.” Amber will have some pictures available to sign in a meet and greet and autograph session from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information visit ambermarshall.com. The trade show will be held from March 11 to 13. Friday hours are from 3 to 9 p.m., Saturday the show is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday the hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ellen Joan (Kauffman) Lauber passed away suddenly in her home on February 28, 2016 at the age of 79 years. She grew up on the family farm south of Tofield, where she attended Bardo and Tofield schools before completing her high school at Hesston College in Kansas. She returned to Tofield where she worked at Everitt’s Foodland. At a church youth function, she met Leo Lauber and the two eventually married on August 20, 1957. They settled on the family farm north of Dodds and were blessed with four children. They stayed on the farm until 2002, when they moved into Tofield. She was not one to let the grass grow under her feet; she loved the look of a nicelycut lawn. She was always busy with something, from helping milk cows in the early years, to gardening, canning, preserving, cooking, sewing, housekeeping, singing and attending family, church and community events. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband Leo; sons Darwin Lauber and Lonnie (Michele) Lauber; daughters Darlene (Wayne) Showalter and Luella (Jon) Anderson; 13 grandchildren Lindsey (Amy) Lauber, Arissa Lauber, Isabel (Ray) Thiessen, Christina (Jarrett) McLeod, Colby Lauber, Delsen Lauber, Ann Showalter (Michael Sitvarin), Laura (Jason) Katterhenry, Alexandra Lauber, Torey Lauber, Jaron Lauber, Evan Anderson, and Evangelina Anderson; five great-grandchildren; two brothers Donald (Dolores) Kauffman and Joe (Elaine) Kauffman; two sisters Betty (Merlin) Stauffer and Grace (Edwin) Good; five brothers-in-law Walter (Jean) Lutz, Ben (Pearl) Lauber, Calvin Lauber, Murray (Sylvia) Lauber and Byron (Leslie) Lauber; and two sisters-in-law Lois Lauber and Phyllis (Geoff) Milligan. She was predeceased by her parents Loyal and Lily Kauffman; sister Inez Lutz; parents-in-law Joseph and Martha Lauber; brother-in-law William Lauber; and niece Michelle Lauber. Her faith in Jesus was important to her. She was baptized in Salem Mennonite Church at a young age and there she was actively involved in teaching Sunday school, singing in choirs, leading worship and sewing blankets (hundreds, maybe even thousands of them). She was involved in the community in many ways, and enjoyed visiting with people wherever she went. She loved her Lord, her family and her community. A memorial service took place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2015 at Salem Mennonite Church (one mile south of TWP494 on RR184). Cremation has taken place and inurnment followed at Salem Mennonite Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the M.C.C.

Edith Aurora Kinnee (Hanson)

Irene Beatrice Moench October 21, 1923 ~ February 26, 2016

Edith Aurora Kinnee was born to Ole and Tella Hansen on the family farm north of Monitor, Alberta on August 2, 1916. She was one of a family of 13 children. As a child and teenager, Edith worked hard on the farm assisting her dad in the fields tending to crops. Edith met and fell in love with Peter Kinnee, whom she married in 1936 at Provost, Alberta. They settled on a farm near Lake Demay in 1937 with their oldest son, Herbert. Here, they had two more children: Dennis and Beverly. In 1952, Peter and Edith moved to the Comfort Reinhart farm southwest of Bawlf. This is where they remained to raise their children and farm. Edith was found tending to the children and home, gardens and the poultry. In 1965, Peter and Edith moved into Camrose. Once in town, Edith started working at Francoeur Cleaners until she retired. She lived in her own home until she was 98 years of age. She spent her last year in Willow Meadows until her passing on February 24, 2016 at the age of 99. Edith was predeceased by her parents, husband and one son. She was also predeceased by two brothers and eight sisters. Left to cherish her memory are: Dennis (Joy) Kinnee and Beverly (Ervine) Kading; daughter-in-law Shirley; two sisters Bernice Barber and Lillian (Ron) Ference; eight grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; friend Lawrence Zack; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Bev Swanson officiating. Interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada or to the charity of one’s choice. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Irene passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 26, 2016 at the age of 92. In her final days, she had been looking forward to being reunited in Heaven with her mother Marie and father Peter; siblings Alvin, Doris, Verna, Edgar and Lloyd; numerous brothers, sisters-in-law and cousins; daughter-in-law Lisa; and especially Albert, her husband and sweetheart of 46 years. She is survived by her children Peter, Dawn Marie, James (Kathy), Sheila (Wes) and David (Katherine); grandchildren Karleton, Eithan and Elisha; siblings Elmer, Billie, Elsie, Norma and Lorne; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Irene will be remembered for her love of sewing, knitting and baseball – especially the Toronto Bluejays. More importantly, she will be remembered for her love and devotion to God and family. Throughout her life, Irene cherished her relationships with her siblings and their families. There was much visiting between them. Later on, she treasured the frequent company of her own precious grandchildren. But to Irene, family wasn’t limited to blood and marriage. It also extended to various others whose lives she uniquely blessed, whether as a second mother to CLBI students or as a grandmother figure to Breanne and Joshua. As we remember Irene, we can be comforted by the knowledge that while she lived a full and active life, she was also prepared for this last journey. Near the end, she was able to say good-bye and to express satisfaction with her life exactly as she had lived it. A funeral service was held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. from Messiah Lutheran Church with Bev Swanson and Rev. David Eriksson officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Messiah Lutheran Church or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Irish Rovers sell out venues during anniversary tour By Murray Green

The Irish Rovers became an iconic Canadian band despite the fact that none of the members were actually from this country. Members met in Toronto and formed a band that still plays to sold out shows across the country 50 years later. “Playing in Canada is always special for us,” said band founder George Millar. The Irish Rovers are stopping for a sold out show at the Bailey Theatre on March 10 at 7:30 p.m. “Four of the boys live in Ireland. I live in Victoria, Ian, who took over from Joe, lives in Fort Lauderdale, and our drummer lives in Montreal. The telephone companies love us,” George joked. They have produced over 40 albums in North America with many more internationally. The band’s new album The Irish Rovers, 50 Years is being released at concerts during the 50th Anniversary Tour. “It is a challenge to tour

and it is getting harder to play without a lot of practice together. We have been doing it for so long that we each know our parts and can practice them on our own,” he explained. “When we record now, we each record our part and send it to Ireland to get mixed together. It’s not something we could do when we started, that’s for sure. We don’t always have to be eye to eye.” The song “Drunken Sailor” was reintroduced on YouTube. It brought them back to the radio airwaves across North America and attracted a younger generation of fans worldwide. Ireland born George Millar and his cousin Ian Millar are both from Ballymena. Original member Wilcil McDowell is from Larne, Sean O’Driscoll is from Cork, bodhran player Fred Graham is from Belfast, keyboardist Morris Crum is from Carnlough, whistle/flute player Geoffrey Kelly is from Dumfries, Scotland, and fiddler Gerry O’Connor is from Dundalk. “We have lasted so long because we got along. I tell

young bands to make sure you like each other first before forming a band. If you do that, you will have a better chance for lasting success,” George offered. “No matter what you do, always do the best you can.” Irish Rovers have recorded a song telling the story of the Titanic with its beginnings in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, which is one of George’s favourite songs to perform. “Irish pride was at its highest and the sinking devastated the Belfast shipyard and its workers. To this day they say with a wry smile – ‘she was all right when she left here’,” recalled George. “We have added some younger members over the years and it has given us a shot in the arm and has made it fun again for us,” said George. “One of our successes is that we always have fun doing what we do. We celebrate every night that we are still alive. We are blessed.” There aren’t many groups in Canada that can match the

legacy of The Irish Rovers. The story of the Irish Rovers started in 1963 in Canada, where the 16-year-old George Millar and 23-year-old Jim Ferguson, both new emigrants from Northern Ireland, met in Toronto at an Irish function. They sang together ‘til dawn. “We change the songs a little bit to keep them fresh,” said George. “We still get butterflies before each show and that reflects the fact that we take pride in what we do. It makes people feel good to reflect on memories.” One evening, while driving to their next concert on tour, the lads realized that it was in fact their recording of “The Unicorn” playing on the radio. They leaped out of the van and tossed their clothes as dancing Rovers filled the street. “We are proud of the fact that this song is sung around campfires and it will be remembered forever. We are always happy to perform it and if we didn’t, people would probably hang us,” George laughed.

Kodiaks crush Crusaders with seven straight goals By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks defeated the Sherwood Park Crusaders 8-4 in an impressive comeback. Camrose opened the scoring when Paul Lovsin scored, but the bears went into hibernation for the rest of the period and Sherwood Park connected on four straight tallies. After the smoke cleared in the dressing room during the intermission, the bears came out snarly and garnered seven straight goals to pull out the victory against a good Crusaders squad. The message was received loud and clear. Liam Motley netted two goals while Trevor Costello, Cam Gotaas, T.J. Brown, Angus Scott and another marker from Lovsin supplied the rest of the offence. “I had a good game after sitting out for two games. I wanted to have a really good game coming back after working hard all week. Sitting out allowed me to watch and learn what was happening on the ice. I think that translated into my play,” said a refreshed Motley. “I don’t score that often but it was nice to score two goals and contribute. Motley and his crew were back in fine form for the rest of the contest. “It was a wake up call for us. We knew what we had to do and we just were not doing it at first. We executed in the second and that is why we played better,” said Motley.

Cam Gotaas of the Camrose Kodiaks waits for a rebound in front of the Canmore Eagles net in action at the EnCana Arena during the regular season. The Kodiaks take on the Old Grizzlys in the first of playoffs beginning on March 10.

The Kodiaks ran into a lull during the January and February run. “I think maybe we were distracted and not focused enough. Now that we know we are going to play Olds in the playoffs, it allows us to get re-focused. I think it is a good match up for us because they are a hitting team and aggressive, which allows us to get into the game right away.” Goalie Patrick Gora

stopped eight of 12 shots before giving way to Joey May, who stopped all 26 shots he faced. The Kodiaks grounded the Canmore Eagles 6-3 on Feb. 26. Max Salpeter and Cole McBride scored within 42 seconds in the opening period to set the tone of the game. Lovsin added a single marker in the second period to take a 3-1 lead prior to the

Eagles soaring on a power play with four seconds left. In the third, Tanner Younghans, Scott and Mackenzie Bauer collected tallies. Goalie Gora made 18 of 21 saves, while Camrose fired 33 shots at the Canmore net. “We expect Olds to be physical and they are a pretty good team. This was a good match to prepare us for the rest of the playoffs,” said Motley.

Bear facts

Camrose will be facing the Olds Grizzlys in the first round of the playoffs. Games 1 and 2 will be in Camrose on Thursday, March 10, at 7 p.m. and on Friday, March 11, at 8:15 p.m. in the EnCana Arena. The third and fourth games will be in Olds March 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. If needed, game five will be in Camrose on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m.

Men’s curling team wins silver, advances to nationals eder was also named curler of the year. “He is a great curler and I curled with him for the past four years,” said Bates. “We were on the same team in the first year when we won the mixed event and this year it is wrapping up nicely with both of us recognized and going to nationals. He absolutely deserves curler of the year.”

By Murray Green

Augustana men’s curling team garnered silver medals at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships in Portage Feb. 26 to 28. Although the team dropped a 7-2 decision to NAIT in the final, the Vikings already knew they curled well enough to advance to the national championships at Fanshawe College in London, ON, from March 23 to 26. The Vikings reached the finals by beating Lakeland 6-4 and Red Deer 8-2 in the playoff round. “We lost our first two games and we had to take the long way to the gold medal game,” explained lead Benjamin Bates. “Taking the longer way and being able to stick it out when things get tough for a team showed we are capable of doing it.” Coach Roger Galenza guided his team of skip Brad Schroeder, third Colton Simard, second Andrew Klassen, lead Bates and spare Chris McGillis to the silver medals and nationals. “Going to nationals is good. Last year, we made it because it was held in Alber-

ta and they needed an extra team. This year we proved that we belong in the nationals and that was our goal as a team,” Bates added. “This is my last year (at Augus-

tana), so to end it with a silver medal, going to nationals and being named to the ACAC all-star team was a good feeling.” Men’s skip Brad Schro-

T he Aug ustana Vikings men’s volleyball team swept the Medicine Hat Rattlers 3-0 (25-17, 25-21 and 25-17) to earn bronze medals at the ACAC championships at NAIT Feb. 25 to 27. The defending champion Augustana Vikings lost to the new champions, Red Deer Kings, in the playoff round to determine the teams in the gold medal match. After the loss, the Vikings had the bronze match against the Medicine Hat Rattlers. Player of the game for the Vikings was Devin Varga. The bronze medalists were led by Luke Ryan with 12 kills, Devin Varga with 33 assists and Thomas Regier with 12 digs in the last

match of the playoffs for both teams. Augustana defeated Lethbridge in the opening match for both teams. Hockey

The Augustana Vikings hockey team helped the Red Deer Kings by allowing them to sweep the final regular season series. The Vikings will receive a first round bye for finishing second. Augustana will start their playoff season on March 11 with a best of three semifinal series. Basketball

T he Aug usta na Vikings women’s basketball beat the Keyano Huskies 66-60 in the final game of the regular season. Sydney Purdy led the offence with 16 points for Augustana. Hayley Story chipped in with 13 points. In the 66-51 loss on Feb. 26, Purdy led with 13 points. In the playoffs, the Vikings met Lethbridge in the first round on March 3 at Lakeland. The men’s Vikings lost 94-55 and 76-68 to Keyano. Cameron Vilcsak scored 11 points in the first game and 29 in the rematch to lead Augustana.

Chevy Trax The smart small SUV

Graeme Davidson By Dan Jensen

Spacious seating for five, incredible interior versatility and the amazing ability to navigate the smallest parking spaces make the 2016 Chevrolet Trax the citysmart small SUV. Trax’ well-appointed LTZ interior with standard leatherette seating surfaces is an oasis of comfort and convenience. In cooler weather, the heated front seats help chase away the chill. Trax brings you the commanding view of an SUV along with a motorcycleinspired instrument cluster that features an analogue tachometer and digital speedometer. You can cruise in comfort with the standard driver inside armrest. The 60/40 split flip-andfold rear seats easily deliver an expansive load floor, while the fold-flat front passenger seat gives you the flexibility to carry longer items such as a paddleboard or a ladder. Trax has 15 standard storage areas. LT and LTZ models add a convenient under seat storage compartment to keep small essentials within easy reach. The available Chevrolet

Accessory Hitch-Mounted Bicycle Carrier conveniently tilts away from the liftgate for easy access to the rear cargo area. Make a connection

Available Chevrolet MyLink with Bluetooth wireless technology makes it easy to connect to calls, music, contacts and infotainment on the go – by using the 178 mm diagonal colour-touch screen display. With OnStar Turn-byTurn Navigation included for six months, simply push a button and tell an advisor where you want to go. Directions are quickly downloaded to your Trax, and voice calls out every turn. Commercial-free music plus sports, exclusive talk, news and more are available through the three month trial of Sirius XM Satellite Radio, standard on LT and LTZ. It’s easy to enjoy your favourite audio services like TuneIn global internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio with the available Chevrolet MyLink Radio. The available rear vision camera allows you to see stationary objects behind

your Trax when travelling in reverse at low speeds. Turbocharged

Chevrolet Trax allows you to merge and pass with confidence thanks to the EcoTec 1.4 litre turbocharged gas engine, paired with an available electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with Driver and Shift Control. Available all-wheel drive (AWD) automatically adapts to provide extra traction and manoeuvrability in rain, snow or other challenging conditions. When AWD isn’t needed, the system transfers power to the front wheels for maximum fuel efficiency. Yahoo Autos said “Steering is surprisingly light, and the electronic-assisted power steering makes child’s play of low speed maneuvering.” Kelley Blue Book added, “We were pleasantly surprised at how nimble the Trax is, no matter how fast you’re going.” High marks for safety

Trax’ 10 standard airbags are more than any other competitor in this class. Every Trax includes dualstage frontal and knee air bags for driver and front passenger, head curtain

side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard passengers, and front and rear-seatmounted side air bags. In a crash, built-in sensors can alert a specially trained OnStar advisor, who is connected to your vehicle to see if you need help – even if you can’t ask for it. An advisor can use GPS technology to pinpoint your location and request emergency help. OnStar is included for six months. When travelling in reverse, rear parking assist provides audible alerts when it detects certain stationary objects behind the vehicle. By holding the vehicle stationary for up to two seconds after the brake is released, Hill Start Assist gives you time to accelerate before rolling backward. Handy when parking on city streets or driveways with especially steep inclines. StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control helps you stay the course by detecting the difference between the path being steered and the direction the vehicle is actually going. It then uses the brakes and, if necessary,

adjusts engine torque to help you keep your Trax on track. Trax received the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s highest possible overall vehicle score for safety. The comprehensive NHTSA New Car Assessment Program puts vehicles through frontal, side-impact and side pole crash tests, as well as rollover evaluations. Each model is then given safety ratings from one to five stars. The result: a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for Trax. Available Internet

Chevrolet is the first and only car company to offer built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi to cars, trucks and crossovers, providing the ability to seamlessly connect your smart devices and vehicles to the Internet. After initial setup, whenever your vehicle is on, available OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi is automatically on too. It offers great signal quality and bandwith for up to seven devices. Province launches transit engagement The Government of Alberta is seeking public and stakeholder input into the future of public transit across the province. Albertans can have their say about funding criteria for new municipal transit initiatives and rural bus service, as well as a new provincial transit strategy. “Investing in modern public transit benefits all Albertans,” said Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation. “An improved transit system will encourage more commuters to choose transit, reducing congestion in our cities and helping us meet our climate change goals. Improved rural bus service will provide Albertans living in smaller communities with reliable access to essential services in larger centres, like health care facilities. It’s time for us to create a new vision for transit in Alberta.” “Contributing to a provincial transit strategy while listening to what citizens are telling us through the development of the City of Edmonton’s Transit Strategy will help us align priorities across the Edmonton Metropolitan Region,” said Don Iveson, mayor, City of Edmonton. “This approach supports our long-term vision and promotes the vitality of our city.” “Rural Albertans and political leaders welcome this chance to take part in the discussions to improve access to bus services across all of our communities,” said Tom Burton, District 4 (Northern) director for the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties and deputy reeve of the Municipal District of Greenview. “The quality of life

in rural Alberta is enhanced when residents have affordable, reliable access to health, education and other services available in larger centres.” “Bus services to small communities are essential for connecting residents to central or regional service hubs, including health care and other important services,” said Maryann Chichak, vice president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association and mayor of the Town of Whitecourt. “A reliable and comprehensive busing network will also enable small businesses to thrive in these communities. We look forward to the consultations and appreciate the ministry’s earlier announced funding commitment.” Engagement process

There will be two streams of engagement – urban and rural – and an online public survey, all of which will inform the development of an overall provincial transit strategy and criteria for future funding for municipal transit initiatives and rural bus service. During spring 2016, the Minister of Transportation will hold discussions with elected officials, including federal ministers, urban municipalities, rural municipalities and Indigenous communities. Stakeholders can also offer written feedback through a consultation workbook, available online. Alberta Transportation representatives will meet with non-elected officials from municipalities, Indigenous communities, private industry, labour groups, social advocacy groups and non-profit transit and bus operators.

port the viewer to the Great War era. Every item features local stories and speaks of the conditions and circumstances Albertans experienced during the war years. “There is not a single narrative to Alberta’s story in the Great War,” said archivist Braden Cannon. “These records depict a complex and intricate tale of the struggles, social movements and aftermaths of war in the province.” The exhibit is presented in five parts: the Western Front, Women and the War, the Home Front, Opposition and Oppression, and *

the Aftermath. These sections paint a vivid image of Alberta society from 1914 to beyond the end of the war. The exhibit also includes an introductory panel and one about the survivors. Included in the exhibition is The Lone Eagle, starring Raymond Keane as an American pilot who joins the Royal Flying Corps, eager for action. The Library of Congress officially designates The Lone Eagle as a lost film of the silent era, though the Provincial Archives of Alberta has five of the film’s original six reels.

ou know, working with The Auto Shoppe, I get a lot of ‘star treatment’, but sometimes I get complaints, too,” says Jackie Rae, celebrity apprentice. “The other day I met this fella, and he kept griping, ‘Every time I’m at the Auto Shoppe, you’re never there! Every time!’ I think the real concern is, why is he there so much? Maybe he just likes the friendly atmosphere! But listen, if you do get a dent or a scratch, or something more serious, they’ll take great care of you.”

“This film is an example of a new genre of action film that developed in the inter-war years: First World War aviation melodramas,” says the Provincial Archives website. “Several such films were made throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including The Dawn Patrol (1930) and the winner of the first Academy Award for Best Picture, Wings (1927). Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

OLMP raises funds for Habitat for Humanity By Murray Green

Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School is celebrating Lent season by selling flower-filled planters. The fundraising effort is being coordinated by OLMP High School leadership students. “This year we are working to earn funds for those without homes in our community through Habitat for Humanity Camrose and provincially,” said OLMP CTS and humanities teacher Kristy Smith. “We hope these planters will serve as a reminder of how very blessed we all are to have the homes we do when others do not.” The planters will come in an assortment of colours and include petunias, verbena, bacopa, callies, fuchsia, lobelia and dahlias. Examples of these baskets can be viewed on the OLMP School olmp.eics. ab.ca web site. Orders will be due no later than March 10. These planters will be delivered to OLMP school the Wednesday before Mother’s Day – May, 4. When the planters come in on this date students will take the orders home for delivery. Those who purchase them through community locations can pick them up between 4 and 6 p.m. that day. Otherwise they will be contacted by phone to arrange an alternate method. Planters can be purchased through OLMP students, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Cobblers on Main Street, the Camrose ReStore on 46 Street, or at the Camrose Dental Centre at 48 Avenue and 50 Street. Habitat Camrose administrative costs are covered by proceeds from the Habitat ReStore, so 100 per cent of all donations go directly to building homes for families. Habitat for Humanity Camrose works to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Habitat believes that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that

Vikings earn volleyball conference awards By Murray Green

Augustana Vikings women’s volleyball player Morgan Rigelhof has been named 2015-16 rookie of the year by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. When Rigelhof signed to play with the Augustana Viking Volleyball team last spring she had little understanding of the impact she would have on the line up. The coaching staff recognized her potential early and named her as one of the team captains. Due to a career ending injury in the second match of the season to fifth year player and captain, Jill Metrunec, Rigelhof found herself acting as floor captain for the remainder of the year. No easy task for a player fresh out of high school. Rigelhof accepted this expanded role in stride and quickly became a positive force on the floor as well as in the team room. She led by example, working hard to perfect her skill set, and continues to work on her understanding of the game at a higher level. This year she has played in 85 sets, amassing a total of 180 kills, 27 service aces, 212 digs and 12 stuff blocks. Opposing coaches voted her as the ACAC north division rookie of the year. Former Vikings player Keri Alcorn made the allconference team as a member of the King’s University Eagles. In men’s volleyball, Augustana was represented on the ACAC all-conference team by Thomas Regier and Devin Varga. The team finished second in the regular season in the north and advanced to the playoffs.

Camrose Now! app o

Camrose Women’s Sh elter Society

Ph

By Lori Larsen The Camrose Booster has taken another step in keeping its finger on the pulse of the community. Inspired by Blain Fowler, publisher, and Ron Pilger, associate publisher, the team at the newspaper launched a smart phone/ mobile app called Camrose Now! on March 1. “Blain and I attended a presentation in Texas last September on the value of having an app for your business,” said Ron Pilger. “We were really encouraged and excited about what we heard. We conceptualized the whole idea for a couple of months then when we heard about Mike Rodin changing careers we jumped at the opportunity to bring in a capable guy to help us with the app design, content and the flow.” The idea was kept under wraps for approximately five months after which a graphic artist, Sharon Schwartz was brought on board. The team of four still worked under cloak and dagger for another six weeks perfecting the concept and test builds. The company the team worked with to engineer the new product has developed 800 apps, but the Camrose Now! was a first of its kind for the company. “A lot of the apps this company has built are essentially offering a presence, the same kind of information that can be found on most websites,” said Pilger. “Essentially the Camrose Now! app can be compared to a 1,000 page phone book.” But that is not all this new and beneficial app offers. “It has a complete sourcing ability to any product or service offered by a Camrose business,” said Pilger. “There are about 600 storefront businesses in Camrose in a fixed location and roughly another 350 homebased businesses. Additionally there are a large contingent of county based businesses that do business in the city of Camrose. “Our goal is to get 100 per cent of those businesses in the app by June 1, we are probably at 90 per cent right now.” The Camrose Now! app really does offer something for everyone. Information on shopping, dining, automotive, real estate agent profiles, accommodation, health and beauty, careers, go and do events, local/provincial and federal government assistance resources, weather, road reports, sports and community news such as births and deaths can be found at the touch of a finger. There are also buttons for buy and sell, deals, an instaconnect phone book, a forum for tastefully expressing yourself or hearing what others are saying, a “fun” button that includes jokes either written or audio, crossword puzzles and Sudoku. J unior players shine By Murray Green

The Charlie Killam School junior high basketball teams played well at their home tournament Feb. 27. The boys beat OLMP and New Norway and lost to Wetaskiwin in the round robin tournament. Wetaskiwin was named the winner with CKS coming in second. On the girls’ side, CKS defeated OLMP, but also lost to Wetaskiwin in the first round. CKS defeated OLMP in the semifinal and lost to Wetaskiwin in the final game. “It was nice to see the young talent showcased. The app also offers a feed from Canadian Press with updates approximately every 15 minutes, breaking local news from The Booster newsroom as well as the complete, current edition of The Camrose Booster. “No matter where a person is, out on the middle of a lake on a snowmobile or boat or in the field combining, he/ she will have a direct source, tap and connect opportunity to whatever he/she needs that is available from a Camrose business,” remarked Pilger. The app will offer four different methods for a business to profile its organization as well as providing opportunities for banner style and full screen advertisements. “It is a more complete product than anything else in the market,” said Pilger. “Businesspeople can either make this their one source for delivering their message or use it as a reinforcement for what they are already providing in The Booster. “It is an economical way for the smallest of businesses to tell their story. “We want to stress that The Booster readership is not down as is prevalent in the daily newspaper world. Our readership is statistically the same as it was 10 years ago. Our design of Camrose Now!, frankly, ‘one-ups’ competing advertising and awareness products in the market.” Since the launch of the app on March 1 the response has been overwhelming. “It’s really taken the market by storm based on the number of downloads, calls, emails and comments expressed to us,” said Pilger. “It’s been a better launch then we could have anticipated. “The reception has been amazing and I just see it growing more and more in popularity as people get comfortable with app technology,” said Pilger. “Our slogan is put Camrose in your pocket and that is exactly what people are doing.” To download Camrose Now! app on your iPhone or iPad; tap on the app store icon to enter the store, use the search button on the screen (bottom left), type in “Camrose Now!”, select free, use your password or register for one, click okay to leave the store, locate the “Camrose Now!” icon on your phone or tablet screen to start enjoying all the features.
