Open Door executive director changing lanes

By Lori Larsen While one organization in Camrose feels the loss of a valuable member, another will experience a tremendous gain.

Open Door Camrose executive director Randal Nickel will be changing career paths to take on the slightly revised position of executive director of student life (chief student affairs officer) at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus.

Nickel will be assuming his new role at Augustana on July 1 and, although he is taking a different direction in his life, Camrose will still benefit from his invaluable experience and involvement.

“Randal brings an experiential background that will translate well to a postsecondary setting,” said Augustana dean Allen Berger. “I’m particularly excited that he will be bringing new perspectives to Augustana’s leadership team as a full partner in ensuring seamless, high quality educational experiences for students, both inside the classroom and beyond.”

Nickel spent 11 years as the executive director with Camrose Open Door Association.

Camrose Open Door’s mission is to meet the needs of youth aged 11 to 24 who find themselves at risk. The organization provides programs for youth in Camrose and surrounding area.

New role In his new position as the chief student affairs officer, Nickel will be charged with providing direction and support for non-academic program areas, including residence life, counselling and wellness, accessibility services, athletics and campus recreation, as well as the chaplaincy program, student conduct and food services.

He will also be responsible for the orientation of new students and targeted services to international and aboriginal students.

Background Nickel has been a sessional instructor in community service-learning at Augustana, a high school teacher, and

an English as a Second Language instructor in Egypt.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and History from the University of Manitoba (1990), a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary (1993), and a Masters of Education in Workplace and Adult Learning from the University of Calgary (2008).

“A great university experience includes a strong relationship between academic and non-academic programming,” said Nickel.

“Participation in extracurricular activities such as athletics and the arts, as well as strong relationships and student living arrangements play a critical role in academic success. A positive environment on campus will give students the best opportunities to be successful in their classes. I truly look forward to being part of the team that seeks to build this better future for students at Augustana.”

Aside from his exceptional contributions to the organizations with which he worked, Nickel has been and continues to be involved in the community of Camrose.

He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Camrose, and has served on the board of the Mennonite Central Committee (Alberta and Canada).

He was nominated for the Camrose Ambassador Award in 2014.

St. Mary’s Hospital expanding labour services

Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose is planning to expand the number of labour rooms to offer more comfort and space for newborns and parents.

“We are grateful for the generous donation from the Western Financial Group to use toward the addition of a third labour and delivery room. We are excited to be in the early planning stages of expanding the labour and delivery area,” said Catherine Turn, St. Mary’s Hospital patient care manager.

The care of the mom during labour and after delivery has undergone some significant changes over the last 30 years.

“At St. Mary’s Hospital, we have embraced a holistic approach to labour and delivery; encouraging family presence during birth, skin to skin contact and the use of many comfort measures during labour. The mom labours and delivers in the same room and the new family often stays in the labour room for several hours after delivery.”

“Our goal is to expand the space with the addition of another labour room, creating a comfortable, homelike environment support-

Isaak uses humour to share stop bullying message

By Dan Jensen Paul Isaak used juggling and humour to share the anti-bullying message with students at Charlie Killam School on Pink Shirt Day. “I find that using my unique skills to present the subject in a fun and memorable way is better than just standing up and speaking to them,” said Isaak, who has performed on cruise ships and throughout the United States and Europe. “If I can captivate their attention there are a lot of different messages that I can slip into my show.”

Isaak encouraged the students to find what makes for a diverse community and to celebrate and build the diversity that exists in their school rather than tearing it down.

“The goal is to help the students focus on what makes them into individuals and to find ways to make them an integral part of the community where their peers will cheer them on and support them,” he said.

Isaak has found that juggling is a great metaphor for life.

“We balance our priorities, we juggle our books, we juggle our schedules,” he said. “There are so many things where you can find a juggling metaphor.”

He feels that the face of bullying has changed quite a bit over the last few years, thanks in part to national events like Pink Shirt Day. “When I was in high

City facilities to receive much needed repairs

The Camrose Aquatic Centre and Camrose Public Works are about to receive some much needed repairs.

Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer told Chamber of Commerce members in his annual address that the City will spend $6 million to revitalize the two facilities over the next five years.

“The Aquatic Centre and the public works facilities are two of the City’s assets that are in most need of substantial investment,” said Mayer. “The replace-

ment of these facilities is not affordable at this time, however renovations have been planned.”

The City will also start a 10-year $31 million program of road repair that will be partially funded by increased franchise fees for electricity and natural gas.

“The City has increased the fees to a level which now matches the average of other municipalities in Alberta and the revenue will be solely used to repair our roads’ infrastructure,” said Mayer.

Roads were analyzed

using advanced testing and mapping technology in 2015 in order to prioritize the roads and the rehabilitation required.

Mayer noted that 56 per cent of the 2016 capital budget of $9,803,600 will go towards engineering, 13 per cent towards Community Services, 10 per cent towards waste management, eight per cent towards corporate and protective services, eight per cent towards the water system, three per cent towards policing and two per cent towards wastewater.

The operating budget of $38,025,211 includes $1.5 million for fire service, $7 million for public works and transportation, $2 million for engineering, just over $8 million for Community Services, $2.5 million for capital projects, $5 million for general government, $6.4 for policing and $4.5 million for administration.

“The budget was developed with a guiding principal of fiscal responsibility in mind,” said Mayer, adding that the adjustment to the tax levy for 2016 will be 2.3

per cent. “This entails being cautious with debt, targeting sustainability over the long term and identifying needs rather than wants.”

Mayer said the planning and development department is now fully staffed.

“The City has operated with a shortage of support personnel for some time.

We now have experienced persons that are working with developers. The staff has brought experience from other cities for planning and development.”

Quilters make big impression on judges

Four Camrose ladies made a big impression on the judges at the Central Alberta Quilters’ Guild’s 25th annual show in Red Deer April 1 and 2.

Janice Steiner won a first place ribbon for her wall hanging entitled Perfect Form, Glenna Ramsay won a second place ribbon in the large quilt category for Butterfly Quilt, and Liz Maki and Kathleen Riggins shared a first place ribbon in the long arm quilting category for a piece entitled Skyline.

“They worked hard on their quilts so it is nice to see them receive recognition,” said Riggins, who is manager of Quilting from the Heart and The Sewing Centre, where the ladies regularly gather to churn out their creations. “They are definitely very talented.”

Steiner created Perfect Form to commemorate the 10th year anniversary of being cancer free.

“It took me probably 16 hours to make, with most of that time spent cutting out flowers,” she said.

Steiner was surprised that her wall hanging won a first place ribbon. “I did it mostly for fun and didn’t expect that I would win anything,” she said.

Quilting has been Steiner’s hobby for the last 16 years. “Quilting helped me quite a bit when I had cancer,” she said. “It gave me somewhere to go to meet with friends.”

Skyline was pieced together by Maki and quilted in the longarm style by Riggins.

“I think Kathleen did a spectacular job with quilting it,” said Maki, who won four ribbons at the same show last year, including Best in the Show and Best Large Quilt. “It is a simple quilt but she made it beautiful.”

Maki has been quilting for the last eight years.

“I love doing the quilting but I also love getting together with the other ladies,” she said. “I am able to be part

of a social group and in the end come out with something that people love to use.”

Maki feels good support from Quilting from the Heart and The Sewing Centre owners Roger and Ardelle Kerr.

“They offer courses on a regular basis and we take quite a few of them,” she said.

Ramsay’s Butterfly Quilt was created from the same design that Maki won with

in 2015 using odds and ends from the “fabric stash.”

“It was made with my friends at the quilt store, over a period of a year meeting once a month,” she said.

“We had a lot of fun making

Ramsay has quilted for twelve and a half years but has been sewing since she was age four. She has found quilting to be a way to meet new friends and get through some of the tougher times in life.

“I had a son who passed away 12 years ago and quilting helped me heal,” she said.

“I have always loved sewing and being creative and the friendship and camaraderie that develops from doing it with others is so much fun.”

Ramsay said going to the Central Alberta Quilters Show provided inspiration to do more quilting in the future.

“It was a lot of fun to see the different quilts and people who come from all over. We met people at the show that had gone with us on quilting tour in Amish country in Pennsylvania”.

Riggins has been involved with Quilting from the Heart since it was opened 16 years ago.

“My parents (Roger and Ardelle) were the ones who started the store,” she said.

“They taught me almost everything I know.”

Do your part to keep Camrose beautiful

It is amazing how much truth there is to the saying, “A little goes a long way.” Just one person picking up a piece of trash when out and about can make a huge difference when it comes to maintaining our already beautiful city.

The City of Camrose in conjunction with Pitch-In Canada will be participating in the 49th annual Pitch-In Canada Week up to April 23.

“We are happy to have been involved in the past and again this year,” said Chris Clarkson, City parks director and coordinator of the PitchIn Week in Camrose.

“Traditionally we have had a good response from various organizations and individuals with picking up garbage in their areas and through our park systems.

“We work with them by handing out the “Pitch-In” bags and coordinating a location for them to drop off the full bags for the City to pick up after.”

Pitch-In bags will be supplied to schools and made available for pick up at the City Community Service Department, City Hall and the City yards.

“People interested in participating will register when they pick up their bags and as soon as we have the bags from Pitch-In Canada we will make them available to residents,” said Clarkson.

Pitch-In Canada is a non profit organization with a mandate to get communities involved in cleaning up and improving the environment.

Pitch-In Week involves more than 725,000 Canadians,

members of local partner groups and more than 1,500 local PitchIn volunteer coordinators.

The outcomes of this initiative include; inspiring Canadians of all ages to get involved in local projects to clean up and ultimately enhance their communities, restoring the environment by cleaning up litter or garbage from urban, rural and wilderness areas, initiating habitat preservation and restoration projects and urban renewal activities, encouraging voluntary action as a means of resolving environmental problems, encouraging Canadians to reduce, reuse, recycle and properly dispose waste, educating Canadians to pack-in/ pack-out their waste when they enjoy the natural environment, and building civic pride so that future

generations will want to help communities develop in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.

“We are proud of our city for being a clean city so this initiative works well for us and assists us on getting a head start on the spring clean up,” said Clarkson.

“We encourage people to participate, not only during the Pitch-In week but all year and look after the best interests of the City.”

Clarkson stresses that residents be diligent about safety when picking up garbage or litter.

Assess the area first, taking note of any hazards or possible dangers.

Use proper safety equipment (gloves and safety vests) and tools (shovels, trash pickers).

If participating in a

group effort such as Pitch-In, have sufficient supervision.

Always supervise children and do not let them wander off alone.

Do not pick up dangerous items such as sharp needles or broken glass.

Be aware of vehicular traffic and use extra caution when near roadways.

Do not carry heavy items alone.

Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water after handling any items (even if gloves were used).

Residents are also asked to use recycling and reusing programs when picking up items, and to sort items accordingly.

“We need to keep our boulevards, parks and green spaces clean,” said Clarkson.

Money stolen from inside vehicle April 15

A resident in the area of 68 Street and 50 Avenue advised sometime during the night unknown person(s) stole money from inside of their unlocked vehicle.

Police received a complaint of a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex. Upon arrival yelling and arguing could be heard from inside of the home. An intoxi-

cated 24-year-old man and an intoxicated 21-year-old woman were spoken to. The man was arrested for Prevention of Breach of Peace and released when sober.

A woman advised her roommate was intoxicated and she couldn’t get him inside of the residence.

Police attended and dealt with a 34-year-old man. The man was assisted in getting

into his residence for the evening.

Police responded to a complaint that a father was being physical towards his child and that he was removing the child from his mother’s residence.

An investigation determined there was a family order for the child not to be at the mother’s residence and the child ran away from the father. Police mediated the situation.

REFLECTIONS

by Bonnie Hutchinson Ten happy things

Here are 10 things making me happy today.

1. Spring is actually here – and early too.

The days are longer and warmer, the trees have those grey-green buds almost ready to burst, and somebody gave me a package of sweet pea seeds.

2. It’s light by 6:30 a.m. and nearly until 9 p.m.

I’m looking forward to our long northern evenings when gorgeous sunsets linger until after 10:30 p.m.

3. I got to attend an intense and inspiring national conference about how cities can reduce poverty and now I believe it’s possible.

4. I heard wonderful stories from people who are directly involved about the collective positive impact of multiple organizations working together in previously-impossible ways. More importantly, I got to hear what it took to make that possible. I love practical inspiration!

5. I have two spectacular orchids, one white with tinges of mauve and another that’s vivid magenta. They make me smile every time I look at them.

6. I spent an evening and a day at a workshop with Neale Donald Walsch, an author whose Conversations with God books were life-changing for me. At the workshop, I especially appreciated some one-on-one conversation with him, an opportunity I never would have imagined to be possible in my lifetime.

7. When I think of the amazing heart-warming and mind-expanding opportunities I’ve had just in the past month, I’m filled with gratitude.

8. Two cooing pigeons just landed outside my window and their antics are making me smile.

9. For fifty years, I’ve noticed that whatever I want to learn about, or whatever would be helpful to me, shows up at the perfect time in the form of an experience, a song, a person, a movie, a book, or sometimes a surprising idea. The older I get, the more I am in awe that life unfolds exactly as it should – though sometimes with me doing a fair bit of kicking and whining!

And that takes me to #10…

10. As I thought about it, I realized that actually none of those things is making me happy. I am already happy and those things are helping me to notice! ***

I’m grateful to have lived long enough to learn that happiness is an inside job. We cannot control the outside world – Shakespeare’s “slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.” Sometimes we cannot control events in our lives – deaths, disappointments, pain, misfortune, illness.

But we can take charge of our responses and choices. Whether we’re in a joy-filled time or a time of great challenges – or both simultaneously! – happiness is within us all the time, ready to be noticed.

Garbage collection My wife and I welcome the upgrading of the garbage collection service.

Recycling the compostable refuse will save years on our landfill.

Our concern was the disposition of the galvanized tin and plastic garbage containers. A call to the City resulted in a reply that “we don’t know, nothing has been arranged.” I visited Centra Cam Recycle one morning and expressed my concern about the galvanized tin cans. Centra Cam has already sent out a notice that they would take all the plastic containers for reuse or recycle. The local metal recycler did not have a market for the tin. Later that day, Terry, the manager of Centra Cam Recycle, advised that he had found an end-use market for the tin and that they would welcome all drop-offs of the garbage can when the new system starts on May 1.

What a relief that the thousands of tin garbage cans won’t be filling our landfill.

Ross Shuman, Camrose Right to live As a retired nurse I find Steve Passmore’s open letter to the Prime Minister to reflect some of my own concerns regarding the ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada in the Carter case.

The Feb. 6, 2015 Carter decision opens the door to physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia in Canada.

Steve Passmore is a disability rights advocate living in Hamilton, Ontario. When he was a child his parents placed him in a “home” for children like him – that is, children with cerebral palsy. He lived there

for six years, feeling totally abandoned and wondering, “Does anyone really care?”

With the Carter decision, he again feels abandoned and has lost confidence in the institutions meant to protect him – the Canadian Supreme Court, the Canadian Government, Canadian Law, the Canadian Medical Association, the Church, and the Canadian media.

As he says, “I want to live, even though some people may not find my life worth living. I am grateful to all of the key sectors that I mentioned for the life I have. But, when the law allows physicians to kill patients and those with consciences are forced to kill or pressured out of medicine, when people who want to kill themselves are exulted in the media to the point where the law is changed and the voice of those of us who wish to live is disregarded and silenced – what am I to think?”

He continues, “People like me have always known that we were just tolerated, not really accepted, had no value and no equality in the eyes of many Canadians.

Society built us ramps to buildings but not to Canadian hearts...the Carter decision provides I have no equality, no value or acceptance. If my choice to live can be circumvented, in my best interests, of course, where is my autonomy?

Choices are made for me every day: where I may live, how much money I receive, and now, finally, with these changes, when I will die.

“It is said that how a nation treats its most vulnerable is the measure of that nation. Please speak up for my right to live. Our future as Canadians must include the vulnerable and marginalized. As a man living with disabilities, I have no voice and unless I want to kill myself I am closed out of Canadian media. Please ensure that all Canadians have a future. Protect us from those doctors who will kill us. Protect us from the media which asks you who would want to live like me.

Defend us from the law which has been turned upside down and from gov-

ernment, which refuses to protect our lives.

“Whatever happened to Canada the good? I am on a ledge right now. Will Canada pull me back or push me off?”

Physician-assisted suicide is coming. The Canadian government has until June 6, to enact a law. If you have concerns about safeguarding the lives of the disabled, the elderly, and those with psychiatric disorders as well as the conscience rights of health professionals and health care institutions, please write to the Prime Minister, Health Minister Jane Philipott, and Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould. Do we really want to go down the same road as the Netherlands, Belgium, and the states of Washington and Oregon?

Dora Grettum, Bittern Lake President needs support I recently became a widow and a friend of mine urged me to join the Senior Society at the Mirror Lake Centre. I did buy a membership, thinking that this would give me a chance to meet new people. I have attended a few meetings and the Morning Coffee Clatch. A new president was elected and has expressed great visions for the Society. After only one day as president it came to my attention that he has no support from the executive. They are already campaigning to have him removed. A petition is circulating, claiming that he is a bully and does not deserve to hold the position of president.

I know that I am new to the Society but it sickens me that this three-person executive can run roughshod over someone who hasn’t had a chance to prove to the membership what he can do for them. The members should show them what he can do. These are volunteer positions and should be appreciated for the time and effort put into them. I hope that the new president stands his ground and does the best of his ability. He has my support.

Royal Canadian Circus to hold Camrose show

Pritchett thrilled to perform at spring rodeo in Camrose

Country music performer Aaron Pritchett is as much at home in front of a large Big Valley Jamboree crowd as he is singing a concert at rodeos.

“It doesn’t matter the event, the size, or venue to me. I will play the same way whether it is a packed hall or in front of five people,” said Pritchett about attending the Camrose Spring Classic Pro Rodeo. “It is the same show I perform everywhere else. I like high energy, in your face country mixed with a little bit of rock show. Rodeos are always fun because everyone is in a good mood after watching some great action and they are ready to party.”

When he was asked to add a Camrose date to his tour Pritchett jumped at the opportunity.

“It is always special to come back to Camrose because, to be honest, my career really took off after I performed at the Big Valley Jamboree festival in Camrose and I am excited to get a chance to come back. It is a special area for me, whether it is BVJ or at the rodeo.

Camrose has a special place in my heart. I love performing in Alberta as well and it is like a second home to me,” said Pritchett, from his home on the lower west coast.

His concert starts at 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, after the rodeo winds up at the Camrose Regional Exhibition.

Pritchett is loved by country music fans for his intense rock-style energy and has become one of the most sought after artists in the business. His passion and intensity for his art overflows on stage and spills into his unwavering dedication to his fans.

He grew up in smalltown northern B.C. and then Vancouver with early musical influences from 80s rock that he transitioned to country music.

The heart of country music is in Alberta, however I did live in Edmonton for three months and maybe that is where people get that from. I listened to country at a very young age, so my love for it is real.”

Wheel,” “Hold My Beer” and “Let’s Get Rowdy.”

“The best crowds are from Alberta. They might not be the biggest crowds, but Albertans are the true die-hards of country music,” said Pritchett. “Camrose is special, but I can go to Stettler or Lacombe and be surrounded by great country music fans. I also have great support from the music industry.”

Pritchett released a brand new single in late March that has been well received.

“It’s called ‘Dirt Road in Them’ because everyone has a little dirt road in them,” he chuckled. “The video just came out last Wednesday, so I’m excited about that.”

He is set to release a new album in late June. “We will test the new song on the Camrose audience,” he said.

“We are learning some others, but I’m not sure if they will be ready by the time the rodeo show comes along.”

Since 2001 Pritchett has become a star in country music. “It’s fun to go places

and realize people know your songs and they sing along.

Now I have too many songs to play in a set, which is a good problem to have,” said Pritchett. “I like the social media aspect of talking to people right away and getting their reaction.”

Police seize traffic sign collection

A mother contacted police advising her son brought home two traffic signs that he found in a wooded area. Police seized numerous stolen traffic signs from the location.

Police stopped a motor vehicle and located one of the passengers attempting to conceal a knife. A further search located a vial of GHB (gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid) inside of the vehicle. A 23-year-old man was charged with one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance.

A complaint was received of a man inside of a vehicle smoking illicit drugs. Police attended and located an 18-year-old man inside of his motor vehicle. A small amount of cannabis marijuana was located. The man was charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Earth Day celebrated with hay rides this Friday

Residents are invited to come out and celebrate Earth Day on April 22 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Camrose Staples parking lot and contribute to a good cause.

The event will feature horse drawn hay rides, live entertainment and refreshments. All proceeds raised during the event will go towards the 4-H Foundation.

The event is intended to

create awareness about the importance of recycling and making Camrose a greener city.

Sue Pezzutto, general manager of the Camrose Staples store, said they will be putting the recycle bins in the parking lot during the event to encourage residents to bring in their recycling.

Some of the recycle programs offered by Staples include battery, ink and toner, electronics, writ-

ing instruments and paper shredding.

“Staples is committed to the environment,” said Pezzutto. “We offer eco-choices for customers with products and services that are ecofriendly and we also support community programs.”

Larry Lievre and Trishaly Banack of Camrose Curbside Recycling are firm supporters of all things green and sustainable. They hope to take

the benefits of recycling to the next level by providing their service using a horse and wagon team as opposed to a gas driven truck.

“This campaign is very important to us,” said Lievre. “By using draft horses to pick-up recycling instead of a truck, it will eliminate about 14 tonnes of green house gases annually.”

An eggs’traordinary’ art class

By Lori Larsen Students of Our Lady Mount Pleasant teacher Kristy Smith’s art class learned the intricate art of writing pysanky (storytelling through creating Ukrainian eggs) during a class taught

by Lyrissa Sheptak of Beaumont.

Sheptak is a writer, editor, historian, and mother of four children who dedicates time out of a busy schedule to not only write pysanky but offer workshops and classes in the art as well.

“In the past six weeks I have taught over 500 people,” said Sheptak. “I teach adult and church workshops as well as school students.”

OLMP students were given a tutorial by Sheptak on the exact process required for writing (decorating) their eggs, including using the kystka (writing tool) by heating the tip with a small lit candle then scooping a small amount of beeswax, quickly reheating the wax, then applying it to the pattern on the egg.

After applying wax to some of the areas on the egg students (no more than five at a time) would carefully carry the egg in their palms to Sheptak, who dipped the eggs into jars containing a variety of dye colours. This continued until the entire design was waxed and then dyed, building up from light to darker hues.

Sheptak’s experience in writing pysanky and teaching the art was evident in the creativity that emerged throughout the classroom.

By Murray Green It isn’t officially spring until the annual Camrose Spring Classic Pro Rodeo arrives at the Camrose Regional Exhibition April 22 to 24. This year marks the 27th edition.

Rodeo action will open with the fan favourite wild pony races for young participants. This event has been a hit with fans of all ages for several years.

Every performance features different competitors in bareback, saddle bronc, tie down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies’ barrel racing and bull riding events.

Enjoy watching the Donalda Drill Team show as well as main rodeo events, while attending three performances over the weekend.

“The Donalda Drill Team will perform riding sequences set to music. They will ride in different patterns within the infield,” said CRE general manager Chuck Erman. “They have 10 riders and they will be carrying the flags in the opening ceremonies for us as well.”

The Spring Classic will feature three performance times. On Friday and Saturday the action begins at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the action begins at 2 p.m.

“You can go to all three performances and not see the same cowboy twice, unless they are in more than one event,” shared Erman. “We are part of a circuit where cowboys will be attending more than one rodeo on the weekend. That allows us to attract the big names in each event.”

Rodeos provide great entertainment with non-stop action.

“If you haven’t been to a rodeo, you should come. It’s one of those events that is hard to explain and you need to experience for yourself. If you have and haven’t gone for a few years, come and check it out. It has lots of action. We have a big screen to watch replays and we have added a few bells and whistles on the production side,” said Erman.

Saturday evening will feature added excitement.

“We want to build an event within the event,” explained Erman. “We want to bring rodeo fans and music fans together for one night.”

Aaron Pritchett, a former Big Valley Jamboree performer, will be providing the entertainment during the dance on Saturday evening. You can enjoy the concert and dance after the rodeo. However, you don’t have to attend the rodeo to purchase tickets for the concert. Doors open at 8 p.m. with Dr. Entertainment DJ and Videos, and then Pritchett begins his show at 11 p.m.

The Spring Classic draws more than 300 competitors and 4,000 spectators each year.

“I’ve been decorating for 36 years and instructing for 10 years,” said Sheptak.

The high school students began the session at 10 a.m., followed by Grade 7 students.

A few of the high school students (who did not have an otherwise scheduled class) remained in the classroom

to assist Smith and Sheptak with the Grade 7 students.

The final process of removing the wax was left to the expertise of Sheptak, resulting in the unveiling of each student’s masterpiece and a story to share with family and friends.

Recyclers’ Appreciation Day this Thursday

The Recycle with Centra Cam Depot will be taking the opportunity to thank Camrose and area residents for helping to protect and conserve the environment during a Recyclers’ Appreciation Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Thursday.

“We’re going to be giving tours of the facility, conducting draws for prizes, handing out prizes and holding a barbecue,” said Recycle with Centra Cam coordinator Terry Vickers.

The Recyclers’ Appreciation Day fits well with Earth Day, which this year will be celebrated on April 22.

“We are hoping it raises awareness about Earth Day and the importance of recycling as a way to keep the earth in good health,” said Vickers.

The Recyclers’ Appreciation Day is a biennial event that has received generous support from Camrose and area businesses through the donation of products and gift certificates. Prizes that will be available to be won this year include gift certificates from the Centra Cam outlet store, food vouchers at Camrose restaurants, and lined reusable bags that can be used for shopping trips or carrying lunches.

“Allied Paper Savers donated a Boston Pizza gift card the last time we did this and will likely be doing the same this year,” said Vickers.

The Recycle with Centra Cam depot has had a steady year handling everything from paper and milk cartons to electronics and cardboard.

“We are seeing more new people coming in and asking questions about what they can recycle and what they can’t,” said Vickers. “We are very pleased with the number of residents who are doing their part.”

Vickers is continually looking for more markets for recycled materials and recently plugged in with a recycling company in Montreal, which takes both plastics and cardboard.

“We have already sent them a load of cardboard,” said Vickers. “If I ship it to Montreal it stays in Canada, whereas if I ship it to the west coast it goes to the United States. I am always looking for a better paying market if there is one.”

Protecting yourself through immunization

Immunization is vital in the fight against disease and illness and is often the front line of protection from what can sometimes be deadly.

According to Immunize Canada, immunizations introduce a vaccine into the body which in turn triggers antibodies as though the body were being exposed to a disease or illness.

While vaccines do contain some of the antigens that cause the disease or illness, the antigens are either killed or greatly weakened.

Some of the diseases or serious illnesses vaccines protect against are diphtheria, influenza, hepatitis A and B, measles, meningitis, mumps, blood infections, polio, rubella (German measles), tetanus, chicken pox, whooping cough (pertussis) and now shingles.

According to Safeway pharmacist Cheryl Feth, shingles is an infection caused by a reactivation of the latent varicella-zoster virus that lays dormant in nerve tissue near a person’s spinal cord after having chickenpox.

“Anybody 50 or older who

had chickenpox as a child, even anybody who says they don’t know (if they had chickenpox) is still an eligible candidate,” said Feth. “(He/she) will still benefit from receiving the shingles vaccine.”

Shingles begins with a painful burning or tingling sensation on some area of a person’s body which develops into a red rash, then into blisters filled with fluid that eventually break open and crust over.

“It is estimated there is a 30 per cent lifetime risk of developing shingles and that

risk increases exponentially as a person get older.”

National Immunization Awareness Week runs from April 23 to 30 and is designed to create continuous awareness to parents about the importance of immunizing their children, but also to inform adults about vaccines available to them.

Labour changes sought Alberta’s largest worker advocacy organization is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to broaden eligibility for employment insurance in Alberta.

The prime minister’s visit to Alberta was announced because of the need to boost the provincial economy, which has been hit hard by falling oil prices. In January, the Alberta Federation of Labour wrote letters to the prime minister and to finance minister Bill Morneau, asking them to make employment insurance reform a priority when looking at ways to stimulate the economy.

“I applaud Prime Minister Trudeau for taking the needs of the Alberta economy seriously,” AFL president Gil McGowan said. “The federal government has promised to increase infrastructure spending in Alberta. Those kinds of initiatives are welcome, but I am also very hopeful that he will see that one of the quickest and most effective ways to stimulate the economy – and to help Albertans weather the current recession – is to reform and expand the employment insurance program.”

Today in Calgary, workers must work 630 hours before they can qualify for employment insurance, while in Newfoundland and Labrador, they only need to have worked 420 hours. Because of this disparity, only 37 per cent of unemployed Albertans receive employment insurance.

“This is clearly unacceptable and patently unfair — especially in the context of the current recession,” McGowan said. “The most powerful economic stabilizer in Canada is employment insurance. But when the vast majority of those who are out of work can’t access it, there’s something wrong with the system.”

The Alberta Federation of Labour is calling for dramatic changes to the employment insurance system to make it fair for all Albertans and Canadians, including a reversal of changes in 2012 that saw the creation of a three-tiered system that made benefits harder to claim. Because of these changes, young workers and new Canadians face eligibility requirements for employment insurance of more than 900 hours of employment.

“During times like these employment insurance isn’t just a tool that helps workers and their families bridge the gap between jobs. It’s a bulwark that helps the whole economy stave off the worst depths of a recession,” McGowan said.

Costello to play for Red Deer next season

Camrose Kodiaks defenceman Trevor Costello has agreed to play for coach Trevor Keeper at Red Deer College this upcoming year.

“Trevor was our top d-man in the playoffs this year and all I can say is that Red Deer is getting, I believe, one of the top defencemen in Western Canada,” said Kodiaks

coach and general manager Boris Rybalka. “As an organization we would like to congratulate Trevor for accomplishing this and getting to the next level. This is only the beginning of the next chapter of his life as he can play professional one day if he decides he wants to.”

Costello collected 10 goals and 28 points in the

regular season. He added a goal and five assists in the playoffs. Costello scored 21 goals and chipped in 43 assists over 206 games in a Camrose Kodiaks uniform.

Six of those regular season goals came in game winning situations.

“I am excited to begin my new life in school and playing college hockey.

Florence Irene Boden December 5, 1935 ~ April 14, 2016 Florence was born on December 5, 1935 in Camrose, Alberta. She passed away peacefully on April 14, 2016 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose. She was raised on a farm in the Rosalind area by her parents Clyde and Edith Lohr. Florence was the eldest of 10 children and attended school in Rosalind.

Florence married Ted Boden of Edberg on August 12, 1960.

In 1961, they moved to their farm outside of Edberg where they started their family. They farmed in the Edberg area for many years where they raised their three children Shirley, Dennis and Sharon.

Ted and Florence retired and moved to a home in Camrose where she lived until her passing.

Florence was a constant companion to her husband Ted, going to the gravel pit, picking up parts, going on coffee dates at the Norsemen and playing bingo. Florence also enjoyed her flowers and feeding wild birds.

Florence was predeceased by her husband Ted; brother Alvin; and sister Leona.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter Shirley (Les) Erickson; son Dennis (Karen); daughter Sharon (Jeff) Banack; six grandchildren Emily (Logan), Jesse (Sarah), Dylan, Caitlyn, Hillary and Brandon; sisters Eileen (Jerry) Mutchler, Cecelia (Delmont) Seiferman and Brenda (Carl) Hildingson; brothers Donald, Larry (Cheryl), Lloyd (Carla) and Neil; and numerous relatives and friends.

A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Interment took place in Edberg Lakeview Cemetery.

Ethel Harris Ethel Harris of Camrose, Alberta was born in England on August 24, 1918. She passed away on April 10, 2016 at Wetaskiwin Long Term Care at the age of 97 years.

Film suggests a wild time for screen time swap

Swapping screen time for wild time is the radical new idea of a father tired of his children being hooked on screens.

Project Wild Thing is the real-life story of one man’s determination to get children out and into the ultimate, free wonder-product: Nature.

The documentary, which screened at the Camrose Public Library on April 13, is about a father in the UK named David Bond whose children don’t want to go outdoors. He appoints himself as the marketing director for Nature and develops and launches a nationwide marketing campaign to get children outside.

“The research is showing that people are more depressed than ever. Too much screen time can make people feel isolated, disconnected and that we don’t have enough stuff,” said Nathalie Olson, education and outreach coordinator with the Battle River Watershed Alliance. “There’s so much happiness and joy that can be found in your own back-

yard or out in the river valley.

But nobody’s advertising it, because it’s free.”

The Battle River Watershed Alliance partnered with the Camrose Wellness Coali-

tion and the Camrose Public Library to host the film screening, which was followed by a Q and A session.

“People really enjoyed the humorous approach to how he would market nature,” Olson said, adding that they had a good turnout and mix of people with children and without.

She said that the film has important messages about physical and emotional health and is for anyone interested in their family’s health. She stresses that technology isn’t bad, but balance is key.

“There’s no one telling us to schedule nature in, it’s not listed on the to-do list and it will often be pushed aside,” Olson said. “If we don’t recognize the value of it, we’re less likely to incorporate that into our schedules. The Battle River Watershed Alliance believes that people benefit from spending time outside, especially as our world becomes more technologyfocused. We need to balance that out and take time to enjoy the natural things.”

Olson noted that there has been a huge spike in obesity and diseases, including depression. Research has shown that by spending time outdoors, these illnesses are decreased.

“By being outside, children are more likely to gain confidence, independence and imagination,” Olson said, adding that outdoor play sets in motion life-long passions for activities such as skiing, biking and other outdoor activities if children begin at a young age. “Even for adults, it’s important because of the mental benefits of relaxing.”

She noted that studies have shown that people in hospitals recover sooner if they have a green view, and that 20 minutes of walking on lunch breaks improves productivity in the afternoon.

During the discussion time after the film, one mother noted that she is less likely to let her children be outside on their own if she doesn’t know the neighbours. Olson suggests that a way to feel that our surroundings are safe is to take steps to meet our neighbours through neighbourhood picnics or barbecues.

Film viewers also noted that Camrose has a lot of green spaces.

“Sometimes it’s just a matter of getting out there and into them,” Olson said.

The Wild Network, which was kick-started by the film, cites a variety of reasons why kids are spending less and less time outside:

streets that are perceived to be too busy and dangerous; availability of space for play to happen; the omnipresence of screens as a diversion tool; and our over-scheduled lives.

They also point to a distressing fact that 50 nature words have been removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary since 2007 and replaced by more up-to-date words (words such as acorn, dandelion and lark were replaced with attachment, broadband and chatroom).

Kids spend less time outdoors than prisoners, a new study commissioned by Persil discovered. In the UK, 74 per cent of kids get less than the one hour of daily outdoor play time recommended by the UN. The Wild Network suggests wild time ideas such as shell collecting, creating a journey stick while on a nature walk and taking a long bike ride.

Olson said that the first step in getting nature back into your routine is to simply put down technology devices and go outside. She recommends starting with a 20 minute walk or biking to the store, and then progressing to going bird watching or simply ambling outside with no specific purpose or direction. She also suggests that sometimes we mistakenly think that we need mountains or more wild places to have quality outdoor time, when in fact nature is right at our doorstep.

By Lori Larsen With the new age of technology virtually every aspect of business is or has the potential to be at the click of a button. The City of Camrose is no exception as it prepares for a future of further technology with the development of its first IT Master Plan.

Finance officer and Project Sponsor, Grant Egerdie said “Camrose is entering an exciting time, where we not only want to do things better, we want to do everything well, in fact we want to be the best! The IT technology we use will be cutting edge, and will hopefully delight our community.”

Tantus Solutions Group representatives Dave McGarva, principal manager, consulting, and director Natalie LaBelle presented the project to members of City council at a Committee of Whole meeting.

Tantus Solutions Group is the consultant that was selected to assist in the preparation of the City’s IT Master Plan.

McGarva explained the project plan and phases of the plan, including forecasted completion dates for each step.

The first phase involves the project initiation, meeting with administration and reviewing of documents, a session with council, and a workshop with senior administrators to clarify planning assumptions.

The second phase includes preparing a workbook to capture business areas and capability requirements, interviewing system owners and business area representatives, documenting and preparing a draft report for presentation to council and finalizing the current state system report.

“We will present a draft for review by council and administration the first week in June for information and feedback ,” said McGarva The third phase involves determining and prioritizing a list of potential projects, as well as preparing and finalizing a draft of a 10-year IT Roadmap and Implementation Plan.

The final phase of the project entails determining challenges and goals, preparing a draft for service strategy and operational plan, finalizing IT governance structure and processes, preparing and presenting to council the final IT Master Plan Document, and conducting a six-month check.

Councillor Bill Sears asked about the inclusion of any public engagement. “Is there any point in the process where we ask the public what they need from us or do we know that already?”

Police Report April 17

Police responded to numerous noise complaints during the night.

A mother contacted police advising she located her child at a residential party and the youth was refusing to come home. Police attended and mediated the situation.

A local motel called and advised of two intoxicated men wandering around the building. Police located a 20-year-old intoxicated man.

The man was transported back to his residence.

A traffic stop was conducted and the female driver and male passenger were arrested for Possession of Stolen Property. A further search of the male revealed a quantity of methamphetamine in his possession as well as checks revealed he was bound by conditions. He was charged with Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of a Controlled Substance and four counts of Breach of Recognizance. The female was charged with Possession of Stolen Property, Drive Without a License, No Vehicle Registration and No Vehicle Insurance and one count of Breach of Recognizance.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $25,700 to the Camrose Public Library.

The grant represents income from the Ross and Denise Irving Fund in 2014.

The fund was established with a bequest to the Foundation from the estates of Mr. and Mrs. Irving. This endowment is designated to support the Camrose Public Library.

The Battle River Com-

munity Foundation exists to support facilities, such as this, and various projects in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The

principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $3,900,000 to support community facilities such as the Camrose Public Library and worthwhile programs throughout the Battle River area.

Four former Camrose Composite High School Trojans football players are trying out for the Football Alberta Senior Bowl North team.

The first selection camp was held April 8 to 10 at Foote Field with 140 of the top graduating Grade 12s from leagues representing Red Deer and north.

The 40 players selected to represent the north face the south squad on May 23, at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.

Wide receiver Liam Jones, offensive tackle Alex Loosemore, noseguard Seth Craig and linebacker Michael Davidse all attended camp that also included physical testing.

The host University of Alberta Golden Bears provided the facilities and the two junior teams (Edmonton Huskies and Edmonton Wildcats) the coaching support. The Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos provided the game jerseys for the North team.

The north coaches, who are selected from the championship teams from all over Northern Alberta, made their selections at the conclusion of the camp.

Establishing a birdfriendly environment may seem as simple as hanging a feeder on a pole or tree and erecting a bird bath nearby.

But a certain level of maintenance is needed to keep birds healthy and happy.

Humane societies advise cleaning hanging feeders once every two weeks or more often if they’re heavily used. Ground-feeding designs should be cleaned every two days. Feeders can be immersed in a very-diluted solution of bleach to water (nine parts water to one part bleach). Let soak for a few minutes, and then scrub the feeder with a stiff brush or scouring pad before rinsing.

Bird baths should be emptied of water each day.

Brush or wipe the bath clean, then rinse and refill with fresh water. Do not leave standing water overnight; otherwise bird baths can easily become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other parasites.

Frequently collect discarded seed hulls and clean bird droppings from beneath feeders. If the area around the feeder has become especially soiled, relocate the feeder elsewhere and clean its initial location.

Follow proper instructions with regard to seed and other bird food. For example, reduce the amount of suet offered in hot weather. Heat can cause suet to spoil, and sticky suet can become stuck in birds’ feathers and make it hard for them to keep clean.

Get out and get active Lori Larsen Getting out and becoming active can be trying with all the other obligations that bid for our time, so Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) along with 11 Edmonton and area PCNs have made it easier and more fun with the GOGA (Get Out, Get Active) Challenge taking place from April 25 to June 5.

GOGA is a six week program that involves an online tracking system of any and all physical activity of the participants. Participants can then monitor their progress online to determine how far they have gone and how well the team is doing.

Camrose PCN will be kicking off the challenge on April 25 at noon in the far east parking lot of the Camrose Recreation Centre. The first 50 participants will receive a free GOGA t-shirt (sizes are limited on a first come first serve basis). Come prepared to join the Augustana Fitness Centre team members in a 30 minute outdoor trek.

Royal Canadian Legion expresses appreciation to council for cenotaph

The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion presented a plaque to City council for its support in helping find a new home for the cenotaph that honours the memory of the soldiers who were killed in the First and Second World Wars.

Legion cenotaph committee chair Ragnar Gisla-

son commended council for the foresight it showed.

“We have created a brand new cenotaph using the pieces from the old one,” said Gislason. “We have done something here in Camrose no other centre in Alberta has done.”

The cenotaph is located just south of the Camrose and District Centennial Museum.

“The cenotaph location is I think very good in that it is an area where there are a lot of community things going on,” said Gislason.

The inscription on the plaque reads: “This is to commemorate the coordination effort between the City of Camrose and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57 in finding a new and permanent location for the

cenotaph. The new cenotaph incorporates parts of the old one. It is important to remember those who gave their lives in the service of Canada. Their sacrifice has made this the great country we now enjoy. We will remember them.”

Legion president Bob Burt expressed appreciation to Camrose parks director Chris Clarkson for his work

in the relocation efforts, as well as everyone on council.

“We can’t thank everyone enough,” said Burt.

Mayor Norm Mayer said he is happy with the way everything turned out.

“I think the location and the final product is something everyone can be proud of. It is a spectacular tribute to Legion members.”
