…which has just completed its annual 11,000 km spring trip from South America. Purple martins, over the past few days, have begun returning to their summer, condominium-style homes in Camrose and area. Scientists, and citizens alike, have been waiting patiently for the martins’ migration from their native Brazil. Keen eyes of martin “landlords” and volunteers are peeled watching for birds with bands on their right legs. Over the past three years remarkable research of an international scale and importance has been undertaken locally, involving this intriguing species of swallow. Captured martins have been outfitted with a “mini-backpack” which houses a geolocator device. It is now necessary to recapture the banded birds which have worn this special holder for a full year. Experts will then remove the geolocators and download the data on themm in order to learn more about the birds’ migration route and speed, and to reveal unique traits of the species. These birds will be released unharmed. New research from up to five mini-scientific devices deployed in 2014 and retrieved last July in Camrose will be revealed at the annual Purple Martin Festival in Camrose on Saturday, June 18th from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm at Stoney Creek Centre.
