The CAMROSE BOOSTER, May 17, 2016 – Page 4

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Generosity and gratitude

Two weeks later, the media images and sounds of the Fort McMurray fire are still seared in our minds. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be an evacuated resident who cannot yet know what’s ahead in the next weeks, months and probably years. Even less can I imagine what it would be like to be one of the first responders – the fire, police, ambulance and other emergency workers who fought the blaze, stick-handled the evacuation and attempted to protect lives and property as much as humanly possible. Astonishingly, 90,000 people were safely evacuated, some with only minutes notice, from an isolated location with basically one major road out. Of those, two died in a highway collision. As far as we know, the others are safe, sheltered and having their basic needs met. Amazingly, about 90 per cent of structures did not burn. *** Crisis brings out the best and worst in us. In this case, the best seems to have far out-weighed the worst. Here are some of the best I heard about. During the initial chaos of the evacuation, even though people were panicked and under enormous stress, evacuees reported that others were courteous and orderly, letting others into the line-ups of vehicles needing to get out. Some teachers cared for students for hours or days until the children could be reunited with their parents. Small and large communities rose to the challenge of looking after thousands of unexpected visitors. Within hours, donations to help evacuees began arriving from communities hundreds of miles away – and then from across the country. In the face of great personal loss, many evacuees talked most about their overwhelming gratitude and appreciation for the help they were receiving. *** The worst? In the immediate aftermath, I heard about super-nasty social media comments that were almost as distressing as the fire. Any of us who have been called upon to deal with even small scale crises will have some small inkling of the enormous pressure and impossible competing interests faced by the first responders and the evacuating residents. I wondered if those who posted nasty comments had ever handled a similar situation. *** Our hearts go out to the people of Fort McMurray. They have a long road ahead. And then, thinking of the disruption, discomfort, inconvenience, disorientation and loss experienced by the Fort McMurray evacuees, my mind went to another place. Imagine being in a desert refugee camp with children, with limited food and water and no medical care or school for the children. Imagine knowing you can never return to a home and community you loved, because you would be bombed or shot. Imagine not knowing where all your family members are or if they’re even alive. Imagine not knowing how long you’ll be there or where you’ll go next. And no, you won’t have insurance reimbursement for anything you’ve lost. *** Does crisis bring out the best in us? Perhaps it can. A friend who experienced a Los Angeles earthquake on her 50th birthday (some celebration) told me an interesting fact. In the days after the earthquake, violent crime in Los Angeles went down and there were no homicides for three days. To put that in context, Los Angeles had 609 homicides that year (an average of 1.7 per day). Back to Fort McMurray. On the Sunday after the evacuation, I listened to a few hours of first-hand stories while I was driving. By the time I arrived at my destination, I had tears running down my face over the courage, generosity and gratitude I heard. I was proud of the people of our province and our country. My brother has a saying I like. “In every adversity there lies the seed of greater benefit.” I won’t be quoting that saying to any Fort McMurray evacuee right now, but I have hope that in a few years we will see some benefit that is not obvious right now.

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Reflections

One of the first things I look for in the Camrose Booster is the Reflections column by Bonnie Hutchinson. Bonnie writes well about a variety of topics, but seemingly always hits the mark. She is a ‘keeper’. Thank you for providing the Camrose Booster in our area. Doris Johnson, Sedgewick Water bills

Further to letters sent by Ron Pilger and Pat Hagel; as a landlord myself and this includes several members of my family in the rental business, I would like to say that we all agree with Ron and Pat in what they have said. There are all sorts of instances of what tenants can and will do when not paying for their own water bills. I would like to make everyone aware that as landlords, we are trying to provide and are providing a service to the community with rental accommodations for the people of Camrose who need to rent. Therefore, as landlords, we expect to be paid for our service (if I go to a restaurant for a meal, I have to pay for that service.) As landlords we already face a lot of challenges. We have a bylaw if

tenants leave garbage behind a house, we have AHS if a tenant decides to retaliate over some supposed slight we have done and they leave old vehicles for us to pay for towing. Ron is very correct in his assessment of what can and will happen when a tenant is evicted (for non-payment of rent for our service). Water bills are a very big part of our ongoing problems in doing our business. We as landlords are of the opinion that all tenants should pay their own utilities as part of living. It would create a more responsible attitude towards life and their well-being. We agree the City of Camrose should hold a deposit, re: water bills and when the bill is too high they notify and disconnect. I’m sure all people do not want to be without their utilities. A fairly hefty deposit would be installed, all other utilities, as mentioned in Ron’s letter, do and they seem to survive and collect. Again, if landlords try to control, or inquire about utilities not being hooked up or disconnected, we cannot do so due to privacy laws and this is on our own property, re: heat in winter, excessive water bills due to broken taps and running toilets that need fixing. With the constant increase in taxes, higher insurance costs, large water bills (they seem to go up all of the time), landlords are probably going to go out of business, which will put a larger strain on the city to provide affordable housing in Camrose in the very near future. It does seem that as landlords, we are balked, penalized and blamed for everything. We are just trying to provide a service for the people of Camrose. We totally agree with

Ron and Pat in saying that it is the City’s responsibility to operate a sound business and to be responsible for their own problems in incorporating a sound business plan in the very near future and stop trying to pass the buck. Carol Kostawich and Avis McMann, Camrose Stoney Creek Lodge

In the May 10 edition of the Camrose Booster, a Letter to the Editor brought up the issue of Stoney Creek Lodge remaining empty during the recent crisis. Ms. Rickards mentions “people seeking a roof over their heads for many months to come, one wonders if an empty building like this couldn’t be utilized to help people in distress.” Stoney Creek Lodge is owned by the Government of Alberta, not The Bethany Group or Camrose and Area Lodge Authority. While The Bethany Group can manage and operate the facility, we have no decision making capabilities in regards to whether or not it is used. That said, Stoney Creek Lodge has been offered as a suitable place to house evacuees and it is part of a possible response to housing needs. While the Government of Alberta has focused their housing efforts further north, the lodge is still a part of their portfolio of available spaces and will be considered if deemed appropriate. We thank the City of Camrose and its partners in galvanizing a communitywide response, that includes The Bethany Group and its resources, in offering support, housing and assistance to those in need. Denis Beesley, president and CEO, The Bethany Group

Norwegian day celebrating to open museum season By Dan Jensen

The national colours of Norway will be prominent when the Camrose and District Centennial Museum hosts a Norwegian National Day celebration May 17. “It’s going to be our first event of the season,” said museum coordinator Janine Carroll. “It is going to be geared towards children, as many Norwegian Day celebrations are, but everybody is welcome to attend.” The museum has sent invitations to a couple of schools to be part of the festivities, which will include cultural costumes, traditional baking demonstrations, readings of Norwegian classics like The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Sandra McLay in the one-room schoolhouse, crafts, entertainment, Norwegian rosemaling, a comical look by long-time Camrose resident

Lloyd Johnson at some Norwegian gadgets, ice cream from Ole O’s Ice Cream Castle and a display of antique vehicles by members of the Camrose Cruisers. “We’ll have people making krumkake in the Old-Timers’ Hut,” explained Carroll. “We also will have a young lad who will be providing entertainment with juggling and circus type demonstrations.” Crafts will include flowers with ribbons that Norwegian children typically wear on their national day. The students will receive a welcome from Dr. Ingrid Urberg, a professor of Scandinavian studies at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. “She is going to explain the connection between Camrose and Norway and teach them a few Norwegian words,” said Car-

roll. “She will do the same presentation for each of the different grades.” The Norwegian National Day celebration has been organized by a committee of volunteers, including the Camrose Sons of Norway, members of which will be gathering after the day is over for a Norwegian meal at the Lefse House. “Once we gathered the different people together on the committee the ideas just started to flow,” said Carroll. “Our hope is to make this a yearly event which is always held on the same day, kind of like Canada Day on July 1.” Camrose and District Centennial Museum has a few old photos of Norwegian National Day celebrations that were held in Camrose in the early part of the 20th century in observance of the community’s Norwegian roots. In 1926, the Nor-

wegian Canadian Club of Camrose, members of which included A.J. Ofrim, Iver Christenson, Dr. H.B. Ness Dr. F.A. Nordbye and Fred Hoyme organized a highly successful Norse celebration, that attracted special guests J.E. Brownlee, premier of Alberta, and consul-general L.C.M. Aubert. The cover of the program said “Norse Celebration Including Bydelag Conventions and annual meeting of Norse Society of Camrose.” Norwegians settled in Saskatchewan and Alberta in huge numbers. They built their homesteads all over the prairies, but most of all in a broad belt roughly stretching from Estevan (in Southeast Saskatchewan) to Saskatoon, the Battlefords, Camrose and Edmonton. Their communities reflected their heritage as they established their own

churches and schools. The Norwegian language was predominant in their early communities for some time. Many other Norwegian settlers continued to come to Alberta throughout the early part of the twentieth century, and they were buying land to support their growing families. The Census of Canada reported there were only 304 Norwegians in the area in 1901, but that number had grown to 5,761 about 10 years later. Though May 17 officially marks the signing of the Norwegian constitution in 1814, it has also come to be associated with Norway’s independence, peace and children. This day is celebrated around the world by Norwegians and friends of Norway living abroad.

Watching fire in the rearview mirror By Lori Larsen

With the help of friends, family and, in many instances, complete strangers the displaced citizens of Fort McMurray are finding some solace in the kindness and generosity of others. Camrose and area residents have pulled together to donate, volunteer and take in disillusioned evacuees. The Fort McMurray Welcome Centre, located at the Rose City Curling Club, resembles that of a mini mall with tables and racks set up displaying thousands of donated items available to evacuees. The centre was the brainchild of local resident Krista Stenlund, who began the project with one borrowed trailer in hopes of collecting a few donations. Ernestine Delorme, one of the evacuees staying with family in Daysland, experienced first hand the donations, not to mention the relief offered by the centre. After a gruelling journey out of Fort McMurray on Tuesday, May 3, Delorme and her boyfriend have found refuge with family in Daysland. “I was at home for lunch,” recalled Delorme. “As I was leaving to go back to work I heard on the radio that there was a voluntary evacuation for the Thickwood (north of downtown) area.” Hearing that it was a voluntary notice Delorme headed back to her workplace at BMO (Bank of Montreal) in the downtown area. “By the time I got down the Thickwood hill my boss called me and said they were doing an emergency shut down of the branch,” said Delorme.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Evacuee Ernestine Delmore, left, was so grateful for all that volunteers have done and continue to do that she volunteered at the Welcome Fort McMurray Centre with Camrose and area volunteers such as Robin, middle, and Derek Weselowski.

“I was already down the hill but could tell it was getting chaotic.” She returned to the bank, retrieved her purse and then headed back to her home to meet up with her boyfriend but the street she needed was closed. “Then I started to panic because I am a nervous person and was thinking I’m not going to get to my boyfriend and I don’t know what I am going to do because I am a horrible driver,” said Delorme with slight laughter in her voice. After taking another route the normal 10 minute drive ended up taking her an hour and just minutes before her boyfriend was about to leave, as a result of the now mandatory evacuation, she reached him safely. They packed up their dogs and began the long, harrowing trip out of the city.

“It took us 10 hours to get to Anzac (normally a 20 minute trip south of Fort McMurray),” remarked Delorme. “We were running out of gas, had no food or water. Then it took us two hours to get gas.” After fueling their vehicle they headed to Bonnyville where they stayed for three days, until securing arrangements with Delorme’s cousin in Daysland, where they have been since. “It was a relief knowing that my cousin would let me stay there, not living in suitcases and having my two dogs in a better environment,” she said. Delorme described the experience of frantically driving away from her home and seeing fire burning through the rearview mirror of their vehicle. “It was chaotic, we were so worried. The things we saw, I mean I am sure people have

seen worse, but it was hard seeing people walking with no shoes and their luggage, biking ,skateboarding (trying to get out of harms way). “And there were kids trying to run home from school, it was sad,” reflected Delorme. “Then you get to the point where the media is making it seem like the whole town is burning and people are all talking, so you think your house is gone from what you have heard and that puts a hole in your heart.” To the best of her knowledge Delorme’s home has survived which was of some comfort, however to eventually return and face the damage caused by smoke and the loss to her friends and community as a whole played heavily on her mind. For now Delorme found joy in coming to the Camrose Fort McMurray Welcome Centre to not only be surrounded

by a group of volunteers she fondly refers to as family, but to also volunteer. “It keeps me busy and it’s nice to give back,” she said. The people of Camrose, Daysland, Bonnyville, everybody have been so nice.” Delorme’s friends and colleagues are scattered in various locations not only throughout the province but the country but she reported they are all fine and of the ones who lost their homes they are learning to cope. She attended a meeting in Edmonton held by her employer (BMO) to provide counselling and offer options available to the displaced employees regarding their employment future. “Seeing co-workers helped me to feel somewhat normal again, but everything is still so unreal.” In two weeks evacuees will receive notice as to when exactly they will be allowed to return to Fort McMurray. “We are not sure if we are going to stay there or go somewhere else,” said Delorme, a sentiment likely shared by many displaced residents of Fort McMurray. Delorme gave a huge shout out to the many firefighters, RCMP members and everybody that assisted in getting everyone evacuated quickly and safely. The Camrose Welcome Centre is no longer accepting general donation items. To date Canadians have donated over $86 million to the Red Cross Alberta Fire Appeal. Anyone wishing to donate through the Red Cross can do so on the Alberta Fires Appeal website.

Vikings assist Fort McMurray baseball By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings athletic teams and Dave Borman, owner of Battle River Sports Excellence have joined forces to help three Fort McMurray baseball teams get back into action. The University of Alberta, Augustana campus knows that sports and regular activities can be comforting at times of crisis. The Vikings compete against the Keyano College Huskies during the regular season, but thought about their families and all those affected by the Fort McMurray wildfires and how they could help. The Augustana Vikings and the Battle River Vikings Booster Society are reaching out to raise enough money to supply three Fort McMurray Minor Baseball teams (the Orioles, Rangers and Oil Giants) with baseballs, bats, gloves (13 per team), baseball shoes and uniforms. The target is $6,000. The Augustana Vikings

and Keyano are part of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference and work with the Huskies and athletic director, Wade Kolmel. His family was part of the evacuation process on May 3. Kolmel was in Lac La Biche at ACAC league meetings when the call to evacuate was given. Wade’s wife evacuated in a Toyota Rav 4 with three children, all aged 13 and under. Needless to say, there wasn’t much room for personal effects. His house was in the subdivision (Beacon Hill) that took the greatest hit. His two boys are most upset that their baseball equipment and that of many of their teammates has been lost. “With the help of Dave Borman, his suppliers and expert staff at Battle River Sports Excellence, equipment will be arranged (at cost) in Camrose and delivered to the young Fort McMurray athletes when the craziness subsides,” said Vikings athletic services coordinator, Jadene Mah. “Wade, being the leader

that he is, is most concerned that he get his children back to normal as soon as possible. For many individuals, that will include sports and recreation activities. No, we can’t make this go away, but we can help some of them get back to normal,” said Mah. “About $1,000 has already been raised.” At this time cash and cheque donations are being collected. If there is a need for

new or used sporting goods, they will provide information for a subsequent drive. Cheques should be made payable to the Battle River Vikings Booster Society. Drop off your donation at Battle River Sports Excellence (6120-48 Avenue, Pharmasave (1010, 6708-48 Avenue, or mail to Battle River Vikings Booster Society, 4213-59 Street Close, Camrose, AB, T4V 4G9.

Barbecue to be held

A barbecue will be held to assist other Fort McMurray residents. Shelley Moch (with Credential at Vision Credit Union’s city centre branch) is planning a fundraiser barbecue on May 18. The barbecue will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vision Credit Union city centre branch with proceeds going to victims of the fire.

Wildlife greenspace program off to a flying start By Lori Larsen

The City of Camrose has enlisted the expertise of Katherine Rogers, a third year University of Alberta, north campus environmental economics and policy student, as the Wildlife and Greenspace Program summer coordinator. “I am looking forward to practicing some of the knowledge I gained in school,” said Rogers. “It’s important to involve the public as much as possible and get people informed about what is happening in the community, especially with environmental issues.” The program will include weekly events held on Thursday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. running from May 19 to Aug. 4 at Stoney Creek Centre. The topics covered during the events will range from wildlife, plants, and connections to nature throughout history and today. “We are trying to get people outside enjoying the environment in Camrose,” said Rogers. The goals of the Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Society are to increase residents’ awareness and understanding of the wildlife and greenspace that exists in Camrose, ensure that wildlife and greenspace are taken into consideration during planning and management, lessen conflicts that may occur with wildlife which could pose a threat to public safety and property and to encourage further research on wildlife and habitats within Camrose. “These events will range in style, some will be lectures while others will be activities,” said Rogers. “The goal is to educate the public on the environment and help them to find parts of nature that they can enjoy in Camrose. “The environment is a very diverse concept, which provides a lot of opportunity for people to participate. I’m hoping with the events this

summer that every person in Camrose feels there is at least one event that they would like to attend.” In many cases the events will be presented by renowned speakers with knowledge and expertise in their given fields. The first event will take place on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at Stoney Creek Centre and is titled “Hoo Goes There?” featuring a special feathered guest, a saw-whet owl and a presentation by the Beaverhill Bird Observatory. Aside from weekly events Rogers will also be busy arranging and participating in the aquatics summer program involving outdoor educational activities, the Purple Martin Festival held on June 18 at Stoney Creek, tree planting and other educational and awareness initiatives. The City of Camrose will be planting trees during the day and encourages groups or organizations to come out and participate in planting trees in areas the city is trying to naturalize. For more information on any of the programs, events or tree planting initiatives contact the program summer coordinator through the Community Services Department at telephone 780-672-0544 or visit https://www.facebook.com/CamroseWildlife facebook page. The city will also be providing a brochure describing the events with times and dates which will be available at a variety of locations throughout Camrose.

Axemen prepare for baseball season By Murray Green

The Camrose Axemen men’s baseball team opened the 49th North Central Alberta Baseball League season with a 2-0 decision over the Edmonton Athletics on May 8. Pitcher Blair Mulder tossed a two hit gem over seven innings to give the Axemen a solid performance on the mound in the first game of the season. In fact, Mulder was flirting with a no-hitter until the bottom of the sixth. He struck out 13 batters and only walked one to pick up the victory. After five scoreless innings, Camrose scored twice in the sixth that proved to be the difference in the contest. The rally started with a lead off single by Jordan Riopel. After an error and a sacrifice bunt by Kris Kushnerick, first baseman Joe Pasychnyk knocked in the opening run with a high sacrifice fly. Catcher Kris Johnson then singled to drive in the second run as insurance. Cal Zimmer, Mulder, Riopel and Johnson all collected two hits at the dish. Camrose travels to Edmonton to take on the Primeaus on May 17. The home opener for the Axemen will be on Wednesday, May 18, against the Edmonton Blackhawks, beginning at 7:15 p.m. on Harry Andreassen Field at Kin Park. Camrose then hosts the Sherwood Park Athletics on June 8, at 7:15 p.m.

Members of the Not So Sure pool team are, back row left to right, Cleve Rackel, Dan Rau, Bryan White, Scott Swerda, Justin Suyker and Kyle Appleby. Front, left to right, Russ Greipl, Bernie White and Josh Zecca.

Members of the Not So Sure, Whoops and High Rollers billiards teams in Camrose will be putting their skills to the test at the 36th annual Valley National Eightball Association World Pool Championships at Bally’s Hotel in Las Vegas May 25 to June 5. The Not So Sure and the Whoops teams play in the Camrose Vegas Eight Ball League. The High Rollers team plays in the Camrose Mixed League. “We’ll be happy if we win one match,” explained Not So Sures member and founder Russ Greipl, who will be making his first appearance at the double knockout championship after playing in the Camrose Vegas League for the last 15 years. “Our team is going up against teams that are loaded with players with some of the best teams in the world.” Greipl will be joined by Not So Sure teammates Cleve Rackel, who has been to the championships on one other occasion when he was living in Las Vegas, Bernie White, who has gone five times, Bob Reid, who is a member of another Vegas League team, and Karen Rau, a member of the mixed league. “The time I went there were about 5,000 players who were registered,” said White. “You have to be ready because you are humbled pretty quickly.” Members of the Whoops team who will be going to the championships are Roly Melin, Jeremy Olesen, Allen Eliuk, Jade Davison, Dale Snider and Dave Borgel. Members of the High Rollers team that will be going to the championships are Shauna and Andy Adloff, Paul Samoisette, Ken Jacobsen, Wayne Swanson, Colleen Swanson and Jim Young. The Not So Sure team was formed four years ago with the sponsorship of R&D Hot Tubs in Camrose. Members are required to play a minimum

of 12 weeks so that the team can qualify for a Vegas League tournament, the winner of which goes to the national championship, along with the league’s first place team throughout the season. “This year we had 10 teams in the Vegas League,” said White, who also plays in the Camrose Mixed League. “The team that placed first automatically qualified to go to the national championship and didn’t have to play in the tournament.” The Not So Sures are working people who have jobs, families and commitments to attend to each week. “For the most part we always have four players available to play each week, but we have faced the odd week where coming up with four players has been a bit of a challenge,” said White. “Our members have played sick, covered for each other with little, or no notice and adjusted their schedules to play. They have mutual respect and consideration for each other and others. They all have integrity, fairness, sportsmanship and strong team spirit.” Camrose Vegas League plays Wednesday and Thursday evenings out of the Rusty Spur and the Taproom at the Norsemen Inn, while the Camrose Mixed League plays Monday and Tuesday evenings, also out of the Rusty Spur and the Taproom. Players pay a fee and put money into a pot that is distributed at the year-end tournament. Both leagues are always willing to accept new players. “Our team’s home is the Taproom,” said White. “Sean (Norsemen Inn manager) Willms and his staff provide great support for both leagues. Griepl, White and Rackel are planning to drive to Las Vegas for the championship. “This is the first time that I will have driven there so I am kind of excited about seeing the scenery,” said White. “I don’t know what kind of scenery there is, but I guess I will find out.”

Ceci addresses chamber Less is more I have a very random way of selecting books to read. I like to walk through the aisles at the library and look at the pictures on the cover of books that are on display, not the ones stacked vertically together. I am easily swayed by fancy words like “New York Times bestselling author” and I take my chances. Sometimes if I’m lucky I remember to bring a list of authors I’ve enjoyed previously, but if there are sticky little hands trying to grab hold of me and drag me to the children’s section, it’s really more of a dash and run kind of selection. War stories That’s why I find it odd that two of my most recent reads have been about the Second World War, but not from the viewpoint of the soldiers - one was about two teenagers waiting for their enlisted father to return and the other was about two sisters finding out about how their mother had survived the siege of Leningrad in the war. It struck me as odd how quickly we forget the horrors of something only a few generations back. It made me think about how wasteful we are, versus how resourceful people were back then. Extra butter I made cinnamon buns on the weekend recently and had leftover melted butter. I looked at the butter in my bowl, and remembered how the elderly woman in the book “Winter Garden” by Kristin Hannah was starting to hoard butter near the end of her life, reverting to things she had needed to do to survive. I wondered about what to do with the butter. I couldn’t put it down the sink, because it hardens. I could wait for it to harden and scoop it into the garbage. Or I could use it for…something. I put it in the fridge while I waited for inspiration to strike. A bit later, it hit me: melted butter goes perfectly with popcorn! Time to have a popcorn party. And I felt so good about not wasting that butter! I think that when people have such abundance that it can lead to wasteful behaviour. I’ve never had to cook a leather belt to eat just to make my belly feel full, but I have thrown out food from my spare fridge that I’ve forgotten about. Would I be so likely to cast out the end crusts of a loaf of bread, leaving them to languish in the bottom of my bread drawer, if I had stood in line in the bitter cold for four hours to receive the bread? I’m betting not. What to take The recent fires in Fort McMurray have also made me think about survival. I was astonished by the pictures of fires right alongside the road, abandoned vehicles and charred remains of homes. I wondered about what things I would reach for if I needed to evacuate with short notice. Family members and pets, food, water, tent and sleeping bag, camera, wedding albums, passports…my list started to get kind of long. I’m used to all of the stuff. Then I thought about the people running out of gas in their vehicles as they fled and suddenly it became about sheer survival. As the flames drew closer, it would be a matter of maybe grabbing your wallet and water bottle and starting to run. Or maybe just the clothes on your back would do. It makes me think that all of the nice things we work so hard to buy and put in our homes aren’t what matters at all and that’s not where our focus should be. This quote is on a friend’s fridge and I like its message: “And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, ‘This is important! And this is important! And this is important!’ And each day, it’s up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, ‘No. This is what’s important’.”

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster MLA assistant Neil Parker and MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose Bruce Hinkley greeted Finance Minister Joe Ceci at the Chamber of Commerce meeting held on May 11 at the Bailey Theatre. By Lori Larsen

Alberta Minister of Finance Joe Ceci addressed a light crowd at the Camrose Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting held on May 11 at the Bailey Theatre. The crowd, attended mostly by Camrose Chamber members, listened as Ceci first spoke on the circumstances surrounding Fort McMurray. “The past week tells us about the good work of public servants and first responders. The worst disaster and largest fire evacuation in the history of Alberta is going on just north of us here. So many people are doing their utmost to ensure that people, property and our forests are protected.” Ceci commented at length on the generosity and kindness being shown by Albertans and Canadians in response to the needs of the Fort McMurray evacuees and community. “Glad to hear that so many things are happening here in Camrose in terms of emergency responses and donations going out to that community.” For the remainder of his presentation Ceci covered highlights of the Alberta Jobs Plan. “It’s a plan to support Albertans through this downturn,” said Ceci. “A plan to generate a better business environment and a plan to get Albertans working again.” Ceci spoke briefly about the issue of spending cutbacks and how this plan will be different than what has occurred in the past. “We are taking a different approach, we are investing almost $35 billion in infrastructure to stimulate our economy and put Albertans back to work.” Ceci reiterated the main points of the Alberta Jobs Plan, indicating it would build a stronger and more resilient Alberta. “The Alberta Jobs Plan will do this by supporting Albertans with a new child benefit, tax credits and skills training.” “Supporting our infrastructures by investing in schools and hospitals and the Alberta Jobs Plan supports businesses by supplying incentives and cutting taxes to spur growth.”

While no specific reference was made to the 2016-17 Alberta Budget Score Card prepared by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce prioritizing four themes for the Province to consider when preparing the fiscal plan, Ceci did briefly cover a few points relevant to some of the scorecard themes. “Our investors tax credit and capital incentive plan will help small and medium size businesses innovate and grow,” he said. “We are also pleased to announce that we will launch Alberta best tax credit for those who invest in Alberta small and medium sized businesses.” There will be a commitment of $50,000,000 towards apprentices completing their training and work requirements. “Another $10,000,000 will expand the training for work programs to reach more unemployed Albertans.” Ceci also spoke on the implementation of the carbon tax levy. “Small business will receive a tax cut of one third to help them adjust to this new carbon price.”

Joe Ceci

According to the minister, the government will be diversifying energy markets to create new jobs with support of newer incentives such as the petrochemical diversification fund. He also said there must be affirmative action on the movement to get pipelines to tidewater. “Alberta gets short changed on its oil because we can only sell to the United States, who was our biggest customer and is now our biggest competitor.” Glenn Fox owner of Fox TaeKwon-Do Schools

inquired, “With the economy and the downturn of the economy the way it is, how is this the right time to introduce a carbon levy? Is it irresponsible to do that right now or is it just to put a good face on Alberta oil?” Ceci’s response indicated there was more to the carbon tax levy than that. “When the Climate Leadership Plan was produced major oil sands producers were standing side by side with the premier and (Environment Minister) Shannon Phillips.” “They see this as an important step to help with the social licencing that is needed to be able to get pipelines to tidewater in this country and to help with the actual reduction in emissions.” “The oil sands has a reputation problem throughout the world and the producers see this as a way to say they’re taking action with government and with other population to clean and green their energy, not only oil but the electrical grid.” Director of Flagstaff Family and Community Support Services Lynne Jenkinson inquired as to the future of the coal mine in Forestburg. “I would like to know, from a social services perspective, because the coal mine jobs are high paying, what are we going to do when the Village of Forestburg no longer has that coal mine?” Ceci referred to the 18 coal mine plants of Alberta indicating 12 of the plants will be closing by 2030 and the six that would not have closed until closer to 2050 will be closing by 2030 as a result of federal rules. “Those six that are outside of that will be the ones that will be assisted through their transition through the supports that are available through the carbon levy collection.” “Basically we are going to work with the producer, the coal mine and the community to see what supports people need to transition out of those jobs into other jobs.”

Cohen’s music alive with Tower of Song

Leonard Cohen is one of the strongest songwriters in the history of music. His creations come to life through the band Tower of Song. The band will be performing his hits at the Bailey Theatre on Thursday, May 19 starting at 8 p.m. Tower of Song is a metaphor for the inspiration that flows between songwriters, each toiling away on their own, but connected by their shared craft. Moved by this concept, celebrated BC singer-songwriters Oliver Swain and Glenna Garramone, collaborated to produce a project that is a dialogue through song and a tribute to the legendary songwriter. Re-imagining both rare and classic works of Cohen, the duo have crafted a sound that resonates with both longtime Cohen fans and a younger audience. Tower of Song began as a one-off tribute night for a packed house in Vancouver and has since grown into an actively touring folk duo. Together as Tower of Song they arranged some of Cohen’s timeless songs beautifully, for two voices, banjo, string bass, piano and guitar. Encouraged by the response, they continued to present the show regionally, and after several sold-out shows on Vancouver Island and a successful tour of B.C. and Alberta, Tower of Song recorded their debut album In City and In Forest. Oliver Swain is a Juno nominated Americana Folk Noir musician that spent a dozen years in some of North America’s most loved roots bands before going solo. Performing on banjo and string bass, led by tremendous vocal abilities, Oliver’s live show attracted a lot of attention. Glenna Garramone was inspired by the geography and spirit of the places she has lived, from Nunavut to Hawaii. She harmonizes the experimental with the classical and the unexpected with the organic. Glenna’s style puts her somewhere between Keith Jarrett and Joni Mitchell. Glenna’s songwriting earned her a grand prize in the 2010 Artswells Songwriting Contest. Tickets for the show are available online at www.baileytheatre.com or at the Bailey Theatre Box Office, 780-672-5510.

BRCF awards $20,000 grant to Open Door

Blain Fowler, left, past chair of the Battle River Community Foundation presents Camrose Open Door Association executive director Randal Nickel with a grant of $20,000.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a $20,000 grant to the Camrose Open Door Association. The grant is income earned from the Foundation’s Community Funds and from the Dave Jacobsen Memorial Fund. The Dave Jacobsen Memorial Fund was established to benefit youth in the region. The grant will assist with meeting costs of overnight supervision at Mauer Hall. Grants from community funds may be made to projects in any of the communities served by the Foundation. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support programs such as

this in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4 million to support community facilities and programs such as the Camrose Open Door Association. To learn more about the Camrose Open Door Association, contact the Open Door at 780-679-6803. To learn more about the Battle River Community Foundation contact Dana Andreassen, executive director, at 780-679-0449.

Battle River Community Foundation still giving strong By Lori Larsen

Vivianne Grue, Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) chair of the board presented the annual report to City of Camrose council members on May 2 and Camrose County council members on May 10. Grue began the presentation with a brief history and the purpose of the BRCF. “The Foundation was born from a vision to establish an on-going, long-term means of supporting important community ideals related to arts, culture, education, health, recreation and more,” explained Grue. How it works

BRCF began in 1995 with a starting fund of $10,000 which has grown to $11,500,000 at the end of 2015. “Our mission is to provide a vehicle to accept and manage funds of community-minded people, creating a permanent legacy that benefits the community, fosters a spirit of giving and meets donors’ wishes,” said Grue. How it works

The Foundation works on the premise of granting funds from income derived from the permanent endowment as opposed to immediately giving away the money raised. The amount available for grants is determined by the earnings on investments and further donations received. The funds granted from this income are then distributed to aspects of community life passionate to the donor, such as recreation, health, arts, education, culture or sports. In some instances the donor may specify youth or elders or a need in a community such as a village playground or library, a performing arts centre or sports facility in a city. The Foundation is guided by clear values that include openness and honesty, accountability, open communication and collaboration with other charitable organizations, professional but non-extravagant image, and

positive and proactive leadership. Managing the Funds

The Foundation’s endowment portfolio is managed by Edmonton Community Foundation. “Their fee is one per cent of the fund each year, far less than any investment management organization could offer,” explained Grue. “Our goal is always to ensure that our assets are managed wisely to meet our financial goals, to protect our donor investments and to fulfill our legal and ethical responsibilities.” Although not required by law or regulation, each year BRCF has a complete external audit conducted. “Canada Revenue requires that we grant a minimum of 3.5 per cent of the value of endowment funds every year on a rolling five-year average,” said Grue. “Grants from flowthrough funds can be included in the 3.5 per cent.” Steering the ship

The Foundation operates the organization with a working board and a small staff consisting of three part-time paid personnel (executive director, technology and administrative support, and data entry). “The Foundation does run a lean and efficient organization. Only a small portion of endowment fund earnings are directed towards operating costs,” said Grue. Members of the Foundations consist of the mayor of the City of Camrose, the reeve of the County of Camrose, the president of the Camrose Chamber of Commerce, the dean and CEO of Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, chief of medical staff at St. Mary’s Hospital and a judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta. The Foundation board is responsible for the governance as well as setting policy and direction. Members of the board help to organize events and participate in activities and promote

awareness, but are also charged with direct fundraising and seeking donors to create funds. Board members complete three year staggered terms with a maximum of three consecutive terms. Donors

At this point donors generally range in ages 67 to 84 years-old, however the Foundation welcomes all donors.

Vivianne Grue

“We continue to nurture our relationships with present donors,” said Grue. “We are striving to reach out to younger generations to foster their spirit of giving and make it easier for them to acquire the habit of contributing each year.” Donations can be made through online methods including ATB cares and Go Fund Me or automatic monthly payments. Granting funds

The process for granting funds involves advertising, inviting and reviewing grant applications, selecting grant projects, notifying applicants, delivering cheques and publicizing the grants given. In 2015, funds held in endowments on Dec. 31 totaled $11,500,000. The total cost of operating the Foundation was $137,000 including two Community Builders dinners at a cost of $19,000 each. Donations to endowments were $999,000 while earnings on investments totaled $853,000. Grants paid from endowments totaled $661,000 and

grants paid from flow-thru donations received were $314,000. Since the beginning in 1995 to the end of 2015 the total grants awarded were $3,900,000. Forecasts to the end of 2016, will see BRCF granting over $4,000,000 to the geographic area it serves. Funding recipients

Some of the projects funded by Foundation grants in Camrose for 2015 include; Reading University, Learning together program held at Chester Ronning, CCHS auto-mechanic program, Music Festival, Camrose and District Boys and Girls club, Camrose Arts Society, Camrose Family Resource Centre Association, Camrose Neighbour Aid, Camrose Open Door Association, Canadian Northern Historical Society, Centra Cam Vocational Training Association, and Camrose Association for Community Living. “These grants came from donor advised funds, field of interest funds as well as the Community Fund,” said Grue. In 2015, a fund to support program expenditures at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre was created. At the end of the year the balance in the fund was $443,000 and in 2016 the first grant from this fund will be awarded. Grue related the example of The Reading University as another success story that the Foundation’s granting has had on the community. “Reading University was initiated seven years ago in our community. “Under the leadership of our past chair, Blain Fowler, a partnership between BRCF, Battle River School Division (BRSD) and University of Alberta Augustana was formed in order to offer a very useful, fun, learning experience for children identified as needing extra support to improve their literacy skills and reading levels.” During the first seven years of the initiative approx-

imately 55 students, per year, benefitted from the program. The program costs approximately $2,000 per student to operate with no cost to the family. BRCF covers 50 per cent of those costs, BRSD covers the other 50 per cent and Augustana acts as the facility provider. This year there are 85 students participating in the program at Tofield, Killam and Camrose campuses. At the end of the program each student receives a letter of congratulations from a community leader and a certificate of achievement from Reading University, which is presented to the students by the Dean and CEO of Augustana at a ceremony held at the Augustana campus. Grue read a heartfelt letter from a parent whose child attended Reading University. In the letter the mother extended her sincere gratitude and expressed how much her daughter had not only succeeded but thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Grue extended an invitation to members of council to attend the Reading University graduation ceremony held on July 28 at Augustana, Faith and Life Centre at 1 p.m. Councillor Max Lindstrand asked for clarification on the exact geographic area covered by BRCF. Grue responded with, “The geographic area we cover is basically the trading area for Camrose as a major trading city, the same area the Camrose Booster covers.” For more information on the Battle River Community Foundation visit their website at http:// www.brcf.ca/.

Edna Kathlene Connery July 14, 1924 ~ May 8, 2016 Edna Kaser was born July 14, 1924 to Joshua and Katharina Kaser in the East Bittern Lake District. She was taught in the little one room school house until Grade 9, then worked in Camrose before moving to Calgary to live with her older sister Dora to find work. She got a job at Jenkins Grocery Store where she worked for a number of years and it was there she met Robert Connery. They were wed in June 1949, and that was the start of their family, Jacqueline and Richard. In 1961, Edna and Bob moved the family from Calgary to Camrose, where they both worked in the Arlington Hotel restaurant. After working at Bailey’s Drug Store, she moved on to Scona Drycleaners/Palm Dairies, and later went to work at the Corner Drug Store until she decided to retire and do the things she wanted to do, such as golfing. Edna was community minded. She volunteered wherever she could … the Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, the Moose Ladies’ Auxiliary, St. Mary’s Hospital Gift Shop, Rosehaven and she also offered baking and meals to whoever needed it. She loved to entertain her friends and family, and was always baking and cooking. She was known by many for her great sandwiches. Dancing was her love and Big Band Music was her favorite choice. Robert passed away in April 2003 and, several years later, Deer Meadows became her new home until January 2015, when her final move was into Sunrise Village. Edna had a full and eventful life. She is survived by her daughter Jackie (Francis) Rowein; son Rick (Connie) Connery; three grandchildren Jeffrey Rowein, Jennifer McKenzie and Michael Connery; great-grandchild Austin McKenzie; and brother Gordon Kaser. She was predeceased by her siblings Minnie Soderstrom, John Kaser, Annie Soderstrom, Rudy Kaser, Dora Noga and Charlie Kaser. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 16, 2016 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment will take place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Alzheimer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Fiddle champion returns to Camrose By Murray Green

Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and Fiddle Entertainer of the Year Scott Woods is returning to Camrose due to public demand. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Woods loves his fiddle. His current tour entitled Love That Fiddle reflects his love for music. “Every year we have a different show and this year we are celebrating the magic of the fiddle and reflecting on simpler times,” said Woods. “When people hear fiddle music they are almost transformed back in time and that is what people long for. People ask me why is fiddle music so catchy and full of joy. Some of the tunes are 100 years old and it takes you back in history. We are celebrating all of that.”

Woods and his band will be here Tuesday, May 24 for a show at the Camrose Regional Exhibition beginning at 7 p.m. Woods and his band will feature a masterful presentation of old time fiddling, traditional country, gospel, sensational step dancing, inspirational stories, trick fiddling and family humour. Woods and the band are reaching out to all the displaced folks of Fort McMurray. They would like to offer free admission to the Fort McMurray evacuees who may be in the area. He believes that perhaps a two hour upbeat show like theirs might help bring them a little joy in an unbelievably difficult and heart wrenching time and provide an opportunity to show them love and support. Born on March 13, 1942, Bob’s growing years and school were spent in Rosalind with his twin sister, Betty. In 1964, he started training as a psychiatric nurse in BC, graduating in 1966. On August 1, 1967, Bob married Patricia Konschuh of Red Willow, AB. He continued working in the lower BC mainland in community-based residence and training centres for the physically and mentally challenged. Bob deeply loved and cared for his family and charges. He was also an avid gardener and inherited his Mom’s passion for trying new flowers, as well as being an adventurous cook. He is survived by his wife Patricia; daughter Betty-Jean; son Mark; and grandchildren Derek, Jessica and Anessa; along with two surviving sisters Glenys Blades and Diana (Dale) Smith; sisterin-law June Evans and sister-in-law Leona Konschuh; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ron and Denise Konschuh; and numerous nieces and nephews. They were beautiful beyond imagination. A very special thank you to Tyler and staff from Weber Funeral Home. Once again, your professionalism, guidance and wisdom has been a huge blessing. Thank you, Tyler, for cutting your holiday short at the time of Kenzie’s death and for the exceptional guidance you have provided since. There is no way to demonstrate how lucky we are to have you to guide us through the darkest hours of our lives. Thank you for the beautiful slide show at the memorial. Your service has expanded far beyond professionalism and guidance in such dark, murky waters. Thank you to all who attended Mackenzie’s memorial and for the memorial donations. A special thank you to all who wrote in her memory book; again, great memories for her son to cherish. To Matthew Shields, thank you for the gift of life. To all: please forgive us for taking so long in thanking you. Unfortunately, our thanks were delayed by circumstances and difficulties. Our gratitude will always live in our hearts. Please believe we are grateful to each and every individual who helped us through our ongoing journey of pain. With deepest appreciation, the loved ones of Makenzie Harris

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Audrey Teske. Audrey Wilma was born on July 27, 1934 to Fred and Ottillia Nordworksi of Ryley, Alberta. She and her older sister Agnes spent their childhood and teenage days enjoying and delving into daily life on the family farm. After graduating from high school, she attended Alberta College to obtain a Secretarial Diploma. Audrey met Gordon Teske when they were in their late teens; they stole each other’s hearts and would have celebrated 63 years of marriage this upcoming July. Audrey and Gordon spent their time working and raising their family in Redwater, Drayton Valley and, in the 1960s, rebuilt and re-established the family farm near Ryley, which today is known as Teske Farms. She worked beside Gordon everyday, supporting him and running the farm, being a great housewife. She was a dedicated mother to her three children Bonnie (Brian), Ron and Colleen (Dave). She was an amazing grandmother to Alayna, Aaron, Jenna, Bryce and Whitney. She will be remembered by family and friends for her younger years of being the life of the party, her beautiful meals, her love for travel, her love for playing cards and, most of all, the endless hours of conversation over coffee in her home. Regardless of the season, there was always time for conversation and a cup of coffee. Audrey was a strong, determined and unselfish women; she never let others see her hardship or pain. Audrey peacefully lost her battle to cancer on May 7, 2016. Our family would like to send our sincerest thank you to all of you who, over the years, spent endless hours over coffee with Gordon and Audrey. If that table could tell stories, we would all have endless memories. To those who visited and made her time pass in the hospital, she was so touched and grateful for your continual support. Thank you to Tofield Health Center staff and Dr. Muneer for their care and determination to make her comfortable, and especially to Pastor Kevin Langager for his amazing support. Memorial donations may be directly given to Tofield and District Health Foundation in Audrey’s name to assist with projects for patient comfort and palliative care.

Dodge Power Wagon Offers muscle when you need it off-roading

Mike Kissick Sales Associate

By Murray Green

When power matters, the 2016 Dodge Power Wagon is ready for action. Available at Camrose Chrysler, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Crew Cab 4×4 is a truck for serious off-road enthusiasts who want to make a statement by driving a big boy pickup. “The truck comes with a 6.4-liter Hemi gas engine that puts out about 410-horses, and more importantly, 429-pound feet of torque,” advised Camrose Chrysler sales associate Mike Kissick. “It is matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission and it has a 4:10 rear axle ratio. This Power Wagon is capable of towing just under 10,000 pounds, so you can bring your other toys with you on trips.” This truck seats you high above the rest with its lift kit, big tires, wheels and graphics that lets everyone know you are driving a Power Wagon. You can’t call it a monster until you have seen all of the extras. It truly has off-roading in mind. The 4×4 offers locking front and rear axles, which you can operate close to the steering wheel. It has the handy shift-on-the-fly manual transfer case to lock it into 4-wheel drive and you can even disconnect the sway bars electronically for better traction on difficult terrain. The Ram Power Wagon has a hill descent control system for added safety going down steep descends. Your fearless attitude of getting stuck, or helping your neighbour will be backed up with a factory 12,000-pound pulling winch. “On the inside, the huge interior comfortably sits six adults. You will love the large fold down centre console in the front and the back seat that folds up to offer extra in-floor storage bins,” said Kissick. The Power Wagon’s seats are comfortable and everything is easy to reach. Large gauges are easy to read and there is an easy to read seven inch driver information

centre in the middle of the dash. It contains plenty of storage areas cup holders. “Another great thing about the new Power Wagon is the fact it comes well equipped with a ton of standard equipment including keyless entry, power windows, power door locks, cruise control and Chrysler’s Uconnect system, which gives you access to Bluetooth, Sirius radio and a variety of apps,” revealed Kissick. You can add power fold exterior mirrors with builtin turn signals, courtesy lights to see under the truck, a leather steering wheel and

a built-in spot for your garage door opener. An optional camera has an eye on the cargo area. A navigational system built into the Uconnect screen offers weather, traffic, and other information so you can turn your Ram Power Wagon into an office complete with Wi-Fi. A few more options include rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, remote start and a spray-in bed liner.

“You can even have a tool box for your gadgets. A box is built into the truck on each side of the bed and they are both waterproof and lockable. You can add a wide variety of accessories to hold guns, fishing rods and extra items. For hot days, there are plugs in the bottom of the box for drainage if you want to carry ice. The tool boxes and tailgate all secure when you lock the cab doors,” said Kissick.

The Power Wagon maybe a large powerful truck, but it rides more like a car than a pickup. It doesn’t always have to be a beast. It has cylinder deactivation, so it is only running on four cylinders at highway speeds. You can drive the 2016 Power wagon by visiting Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Top to bottom the famous Anthony Pages Flying Trapeze act performed to the sounds of oohs and aahs as they flew from one trapeze to another. The audience was delighted by the antics of the Videla Family fifth generation Argentian circus clowns skipping rope while balancing on a unicycle. The flying trapeze act had to be taken outside the building where the sky literally was the limit as performers flew back and forth.

Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer, Camrose Elks Lodge and the Ladies of the Royal Purple raised the May Hearing and Speech Month flag at the Elks Hall to create more awareness of speech and language limitations in children. The City of Camrose Mayor, Camrose Elks Lodge and the Ladies of the Royal Purple then signed a proclamation to announce May as hearing and speech month. Elks exalted ruler Gerry Czapp, front left, and honoured royal lady Linda Stevenson witnessed the signing. They were backed by members of the Elks and Royal Purple, left to right, Doreen Pushak, Marion Czapp, Larry Babiuk, Rosemary Broen, Velma Babiuk and Pauline Gateley. The service clubs encourage parents to have their children checked for hearing and speech skills, so problems can be detected early.

By Dan Jensen Canada Revenue Agency and police are urging Camrose and area Camrose residents to steer clear of the latest telephone scam. “Several people have reported receiving fraudulent calls in recent weeks from a person claiming to be from either the Canada Revenue Agency,” indicates a Camrose RCMP news release. “The caller states tax money is owed immediately and if not paid an arrest warrant will be issued.” CRA spokesman Paul Murphy said dealing with the callers can be difficult. “A lot of it has to do with demanding immediate payment, threatening arrest, threatening jail, using really aggressive language.” The Canadian AntiFraud Centre recommends that anyone who receives calls regarding their taxes to first of all verify what they are being told is the truth. It also recommends asking why CRA would be requesting personal information over the phone or email that they likely already have on file. The Canada Revenue Agency said it will never send an email with a link and ask you to divulge personal or financial information. If you call the CRA and request a form or a link for specific information, a CRA agent will forward the information you are requesting to your email during the telephone call. This is the only circumstance in which the CRA will send an email containing links. Anyone who has been a victim of deceptive telemarketing is encouraged to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online, or by calling 1-888-495-8501. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

I’m bringing my sister Kendra (Woods) Norris – a multi-instrumentalist and certainly no stranger to old time fiddling, having won the Canadian Duet Fiddle Championship title three times with me as well as several solo wins in various classes. She has played in the summer with us before, but after more than 31 years as a teacher, she is now retired and able to tour with us full-time again. She took off a year to tour with us in 2009,” recalled Woods. Also on-stage are Canadian Country Music Award Winner and Guitar Player of the Year, Steve Piticco and upright bass player and vocalist Gary Boles. “Steve has toured with us before, but often he tours on his own early in the year so sometimes he is unavailable,” shared Woods. Keeping the band in time and on time is drummer Wes Dymond and Patrick Linton will be lighting up the stage with his championship step

dancing. “Patrick is finishing his Grade 12 this year, but he is studying on tour this year.” Woods is known affectionately across Canada as ‘The Flippin’ Fiddler’ and tours extensively across the country every year raising funds for churches, charities and community service organizations. “We feed so much off the audiences as well, so we are always excited about the shows, meeting friends and new people along the way. The music always makes it exciting, even when the long tour can make you tired,” said Woods. “The adrenaline we receive as musicians is our drug of choice.” If you enjoy fiddling at its best, you don’t want to miss this show. Advance tickets are recommended and on sale at Wisemen’s Way Bookstore in Camrose, by calling toll free 1-855-ScottWoods (1-855-7268896), or a limited number of tickets will be available at the door beginning at 6 p.m.

Budget 2016 includes a $2.6 million increase for Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) to continue fighting crime across Alberta. The increase means ALERT will be able to maintain all its policing positions. ALERT will receive a total of $29.1 million in provincial funding. “This government knows the valuable work ALERT does to help make our province safer each day,” said Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “With urgent issues like the deadly impacts of fentanyl, we felt it was critical to maintain ALERT’s integrated approach to crime.” “The funding increase allows ALERT to continue our pursuit of organized crime, and tackle serious crime related to gang violence, fentanyl trafficking, and child exploitation,” said Superintendent Charmaine Bulger, chief executive officer, ALERT. “The 2016-17 budget ensures ALERT can maintain a full complement of police officers working these types of investigations.” “ALERT plays a critical role in the fight against organized crime, drugs, gangs, and child prostitution,” said Lisa Holmes, president, Alberta Urban Municipalities Association. “The budget increase will sustain the current level of law enforcement resources. We hope the province will ensure that in the long term, funding keeps pace with service demands.” Along with increasing funding for ALERT, 40 sheriff positions in the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit and the Sheriff’s Surveillance Unit have moved to the Justice and Solicitor General department. The transfer of the sheriffs, who will continue the work they are doing now, will enable ALERT to use its budget to focus on its core mandate of fighting organized and serious crime. ALERT is the umbrella organization of an integrated, provincially-focused law enforcement unit that promotes safe and secure communities in Alberta. ALERT was established in 2006 and represents an integrated model of specialized service delivery in a multi-jurisdictional capacity. Its operations are conducted in a regional manner, not hindered by municipal boundaries. The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit targets and shuts down properties that are regularly used for illegal activities such as drugs, gangs and prostitution.

Stollery Hospital receives 4-H support By Dan Jensen

Camrose District 4-H will be auctioning a steer in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital’s operating room redevelopment project as part of its annual interclub show and sale at the Camrose Regional Exhibition June 7. “We’re hoping it goes for a good price,” said Rosalind 4-H Club president Carson Berg. Steer sales proceeds will be flowed through the Battle River Community Initiative, which is already raised close to half of the $500,000 it set as a target last fall. “We looked at the Battle River Community Initiative and felt that it was something good to give to,” said Berg. The 50 members (approximately) of the Camrose District 4-H Armena, Bashaw, Camrose, New Norway and Rosalind clubs who had market steer projects contributed to the price of the original purchase price of the steer, which was raised as a charity project. The Stollery Hospital Foundation is inviting everyone to support the Battle River Community Initiative and leave a lasting legacy. “Donor contributions have a life-changing impact on critically sick and severely injured children at the Stollery Children’s Hospital,” explained Stollery Hospital Foundation development officer Cyndi Matthews. Donations are being accepted by Battle River Community Initiative members Brett, Nicole and Cliff Denham, Rod Ross and Brian Austrom, all of whom have benefited first hand from the incredible level of care that the Stollery provides, as well as the Battle River Community Foundation. Donations may also be made on-line at www.stollerykids.com, or by calling 1-877-393-1411.

PRIZE STEER

Nicole Denham and her sixyear-old daughter, Macy, joined members of the Rosalind and Camrose 4-H Clubs with the steer that will be sold by Camrose District 4-H at its annual show and sale June 7 in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital operating room re-development. Camrose District 4-H members contributed to the original purchase price of the animal, which was fed and cared for by Carson Berg. The Rosalind 4-H Club had its Demonstration Day at the CRE May 1 in preparation for the show and sale.

Restaurant prices on the rise Todd Hirsch, Chief Economist, ATB Financial

Restaurant goers may have noticed that they’re forking over more dollars for those delicious dishes. But while menu prices have been trending higher, they may not be rising by as much as you might think. Setting the level of prices in March 2006 equal to an index value of 100, the allitems consumer price index in Alberta has risen to a value of 122 – meaning that, on average, prices in the basket of consumer goods and services has gone up 22 per cent. Prices for food purchased in restaurants, on the other hand, has risen to an index level of 130, or an increase of 30 per cent over the same period. However, the general index for all food purchased in grocery stores has shot up to 137. So while prices for prepared dishes in restaurants have indeed outpaced general consumer price inflation, they have actually risen less quickly than food prices. It may seem like restaurants are constantly raising the prices on the menus, but in fact they are actually not even quite keeping up with their food input costs. How have restaurants been able to do this? They can be creative, substituting less costly vegetables, reducing serving size a wee bit or offering feature items that can be prepared more cost effectively. Many restauranteurs may also be taking the hit on their bottom line margins, since raising menu prices too quickly could lose them customers.

Eastlink invests heavily in Camrose and Slave Lake $2M fibre optic build well underway CAMROSE, ALBERTA – People in Camrose will soon have access to state-of-the-art fibre connectivity for Internet, TV and phone services. Eastlink, the Maritime family owned and operated company that recently purchased LynxNet, has already begun work to build fibre optic connectivity into both Camrose and Slave Lake. “We have a proven track record of investing in and building world class fibre networks into smaller communities delivering the kind of advanced Internet and TV services usually found only in larger urban centres,” says Lee Bragg, CEO of Eastlink. “We’re looking forward to leveraging the strengths and successes of both Eastlink and LynxNet to fully modernize telecommunications services in these communities.” Larry McLaren, General Manager Camrose, confirms that upgrade work is well underway. “We’re really pleased with the speed by which the entire team is advancing this fibre optic build. There’s still plenty to do, but we are confident that by summer, the build will be complete and customers, current and new, will see immediate benefits.” Mr. McLaren noted that the company intends to keep the community informed on progress with updates posted on the LynxNet website and in local media, as well as community events.

Local technical staff ready fibre optic cable Eastlink has invested over $165 million in the towns it serves in Alberta over the last 10 years, bringing state-of-the-art, high speed Internet services (fastest internet service available in Alberta), HDTV, and competitive telephone services to towns like Grande Prairie, Cold Lake, Fox Creek, Three Hills, Bonnyville, St. Paul, Wetaskiwin, Whitecourt and Mayerthorpe, to name just a few.

“When we made our initial announcement in January, we said then that customers here have our commitment that we will work hard, every day, to deliver an exceptional customer experience, which includes access to our most advanced video and communications services. This fibre upgrade work is part of that commitment,” affirms Mr. Bragg.
