St. Mary’s Hospital moves to in-patient doctor care By Murray Green
Every patient at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose has access to a doctor through the In-patient Care Team Program. On a rotating basis, a doctor will be available on a regular shift at the hospital. In the past some patients have had to wait for their own doctor to make a round at the hospital before receiving care, or updated instructions. “A dedicated family physician will be on-site in the hospital to make rounds, take care of admissions and deal with problems as they arise,” explained Dr. Lindsay Bick, who spearheaded the program. Since June 6, a hospitalist (a doctor assigned to the hospital for a regular shift) is available for patients to see, which saves doctors’ time from running from the hospital to their own clinic each day. “As it now stands (prior to the program starting) a physician drives to the hospital, looks for a parking spot, makes their rounds and then heads to their own clinic to see regular patients,” she explained. “We find it is not very good for patient care. It is too hurried and the nurses are trying to keep up to several doctors who are making the rounds at the same time.” The hospitalist is available to both patients and their families to discuss care and treatments. They will confer with the patient’s regular physician. “The physicians can now focus on their clinics and the in care doctor can focus on the hospital patients. We want two-way communication so that the family physician and the in-patients doctor can dis-

cuss matters of concern, or personal directives,” added Dr. Bick. “Family physicians will be notified for discharges and appointments booked for follow-up care.” In-patient Care Programs enhance patient care and speed up the process if patient complications arise. “We are launching phase one of the program with three family physicians, Dr. Amber Jorgensen, Dr. Ansar Pasha
Help your child build better body image Alberta Health Services
Children of all ages are exposed to ideas about thinness by parents, peers, and other sources. Starting in grade school, children may become more aware of body image as they compare themselves to others. Adolescents often become extremely concerned about their bodies and their weight. This is understandable since dramatic physical changes are occurring. Unrealistic media images of the ideal body also add to their concerns. There are many ways adults can help children and teens develop a healthy view of themselves and reduce their risk for an eating disorder. Compliment children about the things they do, not always on how they look. When commenting on how children look, focus on their eyes, hair, or smile, not on
their height, weight, body size, or body shape. Talk in terms of your child’s health, personality, achievements in school, activity level, and other healthy lifestyle choices. Avoid making comments that link being thin to being popular or healthy. Teach children to take good care of their bodies. You are your child’s first and most important role model. How you think and talk about your weight and your health have a lasting impact on your child. Take time to reflect on your words and actions. Give children and teens some freedom to make choices that are appropriate for their age and maturity. Talk with them each day. Find out what is happening at school and with their friends. Listen to their concerns. Help them solve their
and Dr. Kevyn Letley. All three are at the Smith Clinic. I have locum physicians helping out over the summer to cover holidays,” said physician lead Dr. Bick. It will be on a weekly rotation.” This program at St. Mary’s Hospital has been in the works for about five years. Dr. Bick stepped up the process a year ago to make it happen this month. “We studied hospitals in
Ontario that had hospitalists and care teams. The study shows increased patient care. We want to improve length of stay (shorter stays), the ability of the patient to bounce back to regular life, avoid return patients and better handle patient admission doctor care,” she explained. Dr. Bick led a committee of family physicians, Camrose Primary Care Network, Covenant Health, St. Mary’s
Hospital and Alberta Health Services and established the program as soon as enough doctors volunteered to work shifts at the hospital. They needed enough doctors to agree to the rotation to make it viable and not over burden just a few doctors. “The in-patient care is a team, not just one physician. The team talks about the various patients and everyone is involved from the pharmacist to the rehab therapists,” added St. Mary’s site administrator Cherylyn Antymniuk. “Everybody has input so it is a more complete team approach to providing care to the patient.” Dr. Bick also noted that having the physician on site allows for easy access to various members of the team throughout the day. The hospitalist will be working during a 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift. “The hospitalist will also see the unattached patients (those without a regular family doctor), so when they go back out to the community, they will have a physician to follow up with them,” added Antymniuk. “It might not be the same physician, but they will arrange for follow up through a referral.” Dr. Bick indicated that about 25 per cent of the patients two years ago didn’t have a doctor attached to them, so the follow up check is important. The hospitalists will be on salary, so they can spend more time with the patients. The program funds are in place for a year for phase one and no extra fees will be charged to patients. Phase two will call for two hospitalists at the hospital at the same time next year.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Amanda’s story
My friend Mary Johnson of mary@bridgeworkscoaching.ca recently had the privilege of introducing Amanda Lindhout at a speaker series. I was so impressed with Mary’s story of Amanda’s message that I asked Mary if I could share it. She said yes. I’ll let Mary take it from here… *** For those of you who don’t know Amanda, or need a refresher, she is the Calgary journalist that was captured August 2008 by Islamic extremists in southern Somalia and held hostage for 460 days. That’s 15 months. More than half of that time was spent in solitary confinement while regularly beaten and raped. Amanda’s words were more careful. ‘Regularly hurt’ is what she said. While I listened, my stomach clinched and my mind went terrible places. It would be difficult not to feel hatred and bitterness towards your captors for the rest of your life. Yet she does not. Amanda freely admits this doesn’t come easily. She works on it every day. How did she, how does she today, maintain her humanity, her strong internal sense of Self? With the hard times and stories of horrid events around us, we might take a page from her story. Here’s some of what Amanda shared. #1 Gratitude: Amanda looked for the bright glimmers. A few kind words by her captors, a Muslim woman who tried to help her, hearing the birds sing. Conscious noticing of the smallest things helped her feel Gratitude. #2 Compassion: Early in her captivity her captors, very young men, shared some of their story. They collectively had been raised in poverty and deep violence. There was a want for better. She was to be a ticket (ransom sought) out of the deplorable circumstances that were Somalia. Later, when she was being beaten and worse, Amanda found a modicum of compassion for the larger circumstances of these men’s lives that brought them to this point. It kept her open for the tiniest possibility versus imploding internally in defeat. #3 Remembering by visualizing and naming out loud: Amanda recounted over and over, the faces and stories of her loved ones. Rather than making her feel worse, this gave her strength and held her grounded in the now. She was loved and worthy – something her captors systematically worked to strip. *** One never knows when we might get handed a supreme challenge as Amanda did. As we have seen, it could be a fire, economic downturn, unfathomable attack. Challenge can also show up as a difficult situation that manifests in your workplace or family. No, that isn’t 460 days in captivity but it can topple your world, and your sense of self, just as well and for a very long time. Slowing down the terrible places your mind can go, to come into the present as Amanda did, to look for evidence that Life is still good. In its simplest, she said, it came down to choice. Choose to take a step forward, choose to remember your highest good, choose to see the good around you. As a teacher many years ago said to me, “It’s about choices and better choices.” What will you choose today? *** Here are four quotes from Amanda Lindhout: “Sometimes, you have to make the choice to forgive 10 times a day when you have these pockets of anger come up. That’s a lot of work, but to me it’s worthwhile.” “When you see a 14-year-old boy who has never known what peace looks like for a day in his life, there’s part of you as a human being that feels some degree, you can say, compassion for the fact that these boys have known war, famine, violence and death from the day they were born.” “The greatest gift you have been given is the gift of your imagination - what do you dream of wanting to do? You have a responsibility to move your dreams forward, no matter what.” *** P.S. Since her release, Amanda has embarked on a philanthropic career. She also has a book, A House in the Sky: A Memoir. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

Hats off to all the wonderful people who worked so hard digging, planting, carrying pails of water and soil on a very windy June 15 evening to make the off leash area behind Sunrise Village into a beautiful park-like area. Even the dogs seemed to enjoy the activity. Watching the dogs and their owners is quite entertaining and I greatly admire these people for their devotion to their pets. Marilyn Henderson, Camrose Naturalization program
As a taxpayer and resident of the City of Camrose, I am very proud to tell people where we have purchased our home and love to hear the nice comments about the cleanliness and stature of our city. When a non-resident person says I have a beautiful city, clean and appears to have all the big box stores, the Augustana University, the historical downtown centre, a decent hospital and medical facilities that appear to be second to none, my chest expands a bit. Yes; I am proud to be a Camrose native, born and raised. Then someone on city council or an employee of the city had a bit of a lapse of thinking and destroyed the beautiful image. Whoever is responsible
for the Naturalization Program being set up along the bypass route (13A) has not put any thought into the matter. We live in Creekview and have since the area was in early development. The Naturalization Program started, I believe last year on the north side of the bypass route. I didn’t like the idea then. I thought it was just an easy out, not to pay employees to mow the grass. In my opinion it looks shabby and does not reflect the status of our city’s appearance. We (the residents living next to the overgrown mess) were never consulted as to whether we would like to see this type of landscape, the city took it upon themselves to change it at their discretion. Now that we are in year two of the project, I have noticed the expansion of the project further to the west as far as Enevold Drive. We in Creekview have noticed we are now having to contend with rodents such as gophers, mice and moles. Not to mention the huge fire hazard we will have in the fall once the grass starts to die off. All we need is for another Fort McMurray type situation on our hands. We pay some of the highest property taxes in the province of Alberta and I feel we deserve better treatment from our city council and city employees than we are getting. The way to fix this would be to start mowing around all the small shrubs the city has planted and let them grow. It would allow a future windbreak for the area residences from the south winds and give a nice scenic drive as people pass through our beautiful city on the bypass route. Rodger Banack, Camrose Museum tour
For many the word muse-
um invokes a mood of silence and rich memories-and for good reason. However, on May 17 silence was scarce at our Camrose and District Centennial Museum as scores of elementary students saw, in action, the source of many artifacts of our fine museum. They heard (and learned to speak) Norwegian, thanks to faculty of Augustana, they saw authentic national costumes being modeled and saw excellent wood carving and rosemaling. They heard the ring of a young blacksmith as he shaped red hot iron and were entertained by a performer with a whip. The smell of food led to another area where Norwegian goodies were being baked and samples enjoyed as they listened to a gifted storyteller’s tales. The children observed a home, a church and a school as our ancestors knew them. Being May 17, ice cream was enjoyed as is the custom in Norway. Watching the expressions of our youngsters and hearing their questions was a joyful experience for me. It came about as a result of organization by Janine and the museum board as they focused our attention on the strong Scandinavian influence on our history in Camrose. And there are exciting plans for further events this summer. Our centennial museum, as well as our excellent railway museum are gems we can be proud of and a showpiece for visitors as well. With well over 100,000 items on display and as many again carefully catalogued in storage, I say thanks to the dedication of organizers over the years and to the enthusiastic plans of Janine and her staff today. Rediscover our museums this summerthey are gems. Lyle Erga, Camrose

Power grid prepares for disaster Submitted
Disaster exercise helps prepare operators to turn the lights back on after simulated blackout. The power has never completely gone out across Alberta, although in May 1986, a blizzard caused massive destruction to power lines across southern Alberta. Thousands of wooden
distribution poles were destroyed and tens of thousands of rural residents were without power for several days – some people didn’t have electricity for weeks. On the 30th anniversary of that storm, the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) just completed its 13th annual simulated System Restoration Train-
ing, which involved approximately 200 system controllers representing the AESO and about a dozen industry partners from across the province. The restoration training was a success and dozens of system controllers are now back at their work stations, better prepared to address a province-wide power outage.

Auxiliary constable hangs up his hat after 30 years By Lori Larsen
After 30 years of dedication in a volunteer position as an auxiliary constable with Camrose RCMP, Derek Engen is hanging up his hat. “Derek’s retirement will be a loss to the program and the detachment,” said Camrose RCMP Const. Lou Leroux. “He was not only a valued member to the program and detachment, but over the years has became a friend.” And while Derek will no doubt make appearances at the detachment to visit and catch up, his regular presence as an auxiliary member will be missed. “He always had a happy spirit and when he came on shift was upbeat and positive, which was infectious to everybody else on the team,” added Leroux. On June 10, 1986, Engen was sworn in, along with four other auxiliary members. “I was always interested in joining the mounted police,” he said. “I was a volunteer member of the Camrose Fire Department for 30 years and one day an RCMP car arrived at one of the scenes we were attending.” Camrose RCMP Const. Russel Olansky, (since retired) the responding officer, had an auxiliary member with him which peaked the interest of Engen. Const. Olansky explained the auxiliary program to Engen after which the ball started rolling. “He (Olansky) said they were looking for auxiliary members so I went to the detachment the next day and spoke to the sergeant. I told
him I was interested in the program.” After an interview and a thorough security clearance that took up to four months Engen was accepted into the program. “I wanted to see if it was going to be something I wanted to do as a career,” said Engen. Having decided it was a career prospect Engen completed all the paper work and successfully passed the testing to continue as a regular member. Unfortunately, due to some family illnesses, he was unable to pursue that avenue but continued his committed service as an auxiliary in Camrose. While the majority of his service was concentrated in the Camrose area, he was able to work in other areas such as Wetaskiwin, Grand Cache and Bashaw to assist members who had been transferred from Camrose. When recalling his most memorable moment, Engen related an occurrence involving a suicidal young woman. “We were able to get her to talk to us and for some unknown reason she and I had a really good rapport,” he said. “She started talking to me, so the regular member that I was with told me to just keep going. I convinced her (subject) we were there to help her and to come to the hospital with us where she received help. A year later she sent the detachment a letter to the NCO (non-commissioned officer) in charge, thanking me.” Engen humbly said that in the letter she thanked him for helping her change her life.
“I did do something good and that was kind of nice.” Engen stated auxiliary constables offered a unique service to the RCMP by providing a contingency of local people (members) who have been or stay in the area longer. “The regular members get transferred in and out so having auxiliary members that are from the community was a resource for the force. “Auxiliary members might be farmers or other people with different jobs who know the people in the community.” When he was younger and living in Scotland with his family he decided, much to the disapproval of his mother, to join the Royal Marines, but nearing the end of his application process his father announced the family was moving back to Canada. Engen said he told his father he was very close to getting in and with a laugh repeated his father’s response. “You would be over here (Scotland) with a gun and I would have to live with your mother. It isn’t a fair fight.” In 1982, Engen was thrilled to move from Morrin, Alberta to, in his words, the big city of Camrose. Outside his work as an auxiliary constable Engen works at his full-time job at the Home Hardware Western Distribution Centre. As if working full-time and putting in many hours as an auxiliary constable wasn’t enough, Engen volunteered for 30 years with the Camrose Fire Department, retiring from that position in 2013.
Submitted Photo After 30 years of dedicated service as an auxiliary constable for Camrose RCMP Derek Engen retires.
Perhaps with some of his new spare time Engen will be able to spend more time with his two daughters and granddaughter. It is evident that he will miss his role with the RCMP, not just the excitement that comes with policing, but the camaraderie of working with some amazing people. “Over the years I have been able to work with some very professional police officers, both regular members and the auxiliary,” commented Engen. “On occasion I worked alongside the Camrose Police Service, also a very professional organization. “What a lot of people don’t realize about the police is that due to their professionalism
there is a lot of what they do that doesn’t make the paper. They just look after it and do their job without the glory.” On a final note, Engen thanked the members and all the people he had the opportunity to work with over his 30 years. “It was a great experience,” he said. “I especially want to thank Const. Olansky for telling me about this program in the first place. If it wasn’t for him I really would have missed out.” For more information on the RCMP auxiliary program visit http://www.rcmp-grc. gc.ca/ccaps-spcca/auxil-eng. htm website.
Recognizing the good in people By Lori Larsen
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster A core group of volunteers for the Camrose Welcome Centre for Fort McMurray were recognized by the City of Camrose at a barbecue held on June 15. Left to right front row Rachel Coventry with Lucy (Victim Services service dog), Krista Stenlund, Emrence Law (young girl), Roxanne Porter, Naomi Porter, Angeline Chernezky, Robin Weselowski, back row Brandon Stenlund, Dean Porter, Rob Chernezky and Ryan Poole, manager Community Services for the City of Camrose.
As residents of Fort McMurray slowly move back and try to get their lives in order, the volunteers throughout the province and country, including those in Camrose, are left with a new sense of pride and humility. Those volunteers are also returning to the lives they led before dedicating countless hours to Fort McMurray residents displaced by the wildfires. To ensure the volunteers of Camrose and area knew how much their tireless efforts were appreciated the City of Camrose hosted a steak barbecue for the core group of vol-
unteer organizers on June 15 at the Rose City Curling Club. “We were all pretty much leading our happy lives in Camrose really not directly affected by what was happening in Fort McMurray,” commented City of Camrose general manager of community services Ryan Poole. “Then this core group of volunteers here in Camrose along with Camrose and District Victims Services and other support groups helped set up this amazing Welcome and Donation Centre.” The centre was eventually housed at the Rose City Curling Club. Taking over nearly three quarters of the
centre were tables filled with donations covering every possible need of the displaced Fort McMurray residents. Aside from the generous donations, the volunteers that manned the centre showed up without fail to greet and comfort the wildfire victims and distribute goods as needed. “They all did it out of the kindness of their hearts,” said Poole. “Some of them were putting in over 50 hours a week.” “We (the City) just wanted to say thank you to these wonderful volunteers, our own staff and all of the people in Camrose and area who generously donated goods.”
Bittern Lake mailboxes were vandalized Submitted
June 6
A complaint was received after two friends exchanged property and one refused to return the items. An RCMP officer mediated the situation and all property was returned to the rightful owners. June 10
Bittern Lake mailboxes were vandalized and opened
along Highway 616. No mail was reported to be missing. Report any suspicious activity to Camrose RCMP at 780-672-3342. A truck was locked and parked near Edberg during the day. When the owner returned the truck had been broken into and a duffel bag with belongings, including a laptop, were taken. This is currently being investigated.
Police responded to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 26. The one-yearold passenger was restrained properly and suffered no serious injuries. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor. RCMP received a complaint of a large group of people being loud and having a bonfire at the Ross Flats Campground. The campers were reminded of fire safety
and agreed to keep noise levels down for other campers. June 11
After responding to an erratic driving complaint, police located the suspect vehicle and subsequently arrested a 23-year-old female from Edmonton for Impaired Driving. Her vehicle was noted to be damaged and was towed and impounded. The suspect was released on
a promise to appear in court in Camrose. If you have any information regarding any of the above mentioned incidents that may lead to an arrest, contact your local RCMP Detachment at 780-6723342 during business hours or Crime Stoppers Tips at 1-800-222-8477.

David’s memory for names of people and events will be greatly missed by all who have worked with him. Centra Cam, you did us a great favour 22 years ago by sending David to us. He’s made our store uniquely better.
We love you David and hate to see you leave us, but you deserve a long and happy retirement!

Army Cadets to on European battlefield tour By Murray Green
Four members of the South Alberta Light Horse Army Cadet Corps in Camrose and the commanding officer will be participating in a European Battlefield Tour, Aug. 11 to 23. Captain Angeline Rolf will lead CWO Adam Clarkson, Sgt. Riley Newberry, Cpl. Calum Beauregard and WO Keianna Greene to five cities in France, then two or three cities in Belgium and then on to the Netherlands this summer. “We had to be over 16, meet complete attendance requirements and be in the top group of cadets,” explained Newberry on how they qualified. “We not only had to be passing standards, but actually surpassing them, which made us viable for this opportunity,” added Clarkson. “I was excited to participate in a tour outside of Canada. We will be visiting First and Second World War battle sites. It is a great opportunity to learn about the history,” said Beauregard. “It’s good to hear the stories of what people have gone through and how they sacrificed,” added Newberry. “I’ve been in cadets for six years and this regiment really does mean something to me, so I’m excited to see where they fought during the First and Second World War. I will feel how they interrupted the situations,” com-

mented Clarkson, who also works at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. “History has always been an interest of mine, especially the First and Second World Wars. This is something I’ve always wanted to do since I was very young.” The cadets will tour areas where the SALH regiment fought and traveled during the wars. “We are doing an assignment on soldiers that passed away that were from
this area. We are going to find out where they are buried,” continued Clarkson. “If they are from the Camrose area, we plan on putting a Camrose flag on their headstone or marker. So far, I have found three that I just need to find out what cemetery they are at,” explained Newberry. “We found names on the cenotaph here in Camrose and now we are matching them to where they fought and were buried.”
Beauregard was surprised at the number of brothers, or family members he found. “Some of the names are closely tied to people who still reside in Camrose,” added Rolf. “We haven’t pursued any local information, but if we find something out that people want to know about, we can share that with the families. If we find someone’s final resting place in the areas we are touring, we can definitely speak to the fami-
lies,” she added. “We search on websites for information that help us locate the cemetery and monument sites. We realize that we might not find everyone, because it might be unknown, or we might not be in that area. Each cadet is assigned 20 soldiers, so that could be up to 80.” Clarkson said the numbers are workable because they have been finding a lot of useful information. “Unfortunately, we may not find everybody. If they were lost or the names are common it will be harder.” This is more than history in school. “We will learn more than we did in school. We will go to the beaches where soldiers landed and fought and receive a similar feeling they did. We will be following in their footsteps on the beach,” explained Rolf. “We are going to be meeting people who were affected by the Second World War. We may find people who saw our regiment walk through their town,” said Clarkson. The cadets will participate in ceremonies such as at Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium. They may present wreaths or recite poems in the services. “We thank everyone for their support and encouragement to be able to go on this tour,” concluded Rolf.
Camrose police warn about scams By Lori Larsen
BICYCLE SAFETY
Murray Green, Camrose Booster
Two local boys from Camrose listen to instructions from Camrose Police Services Const. John Fernhout during a bike safety program for local youngsters.
Camrose Police Service are requesting that residents be wary of two fraud occurrences currently affecting citizens of Camrose. The first involves a scam under the pretence of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by way of fraudulent communication through telephone, mail, text messages or email requesting personal information such as a social insurance number, credit card number, bank account number, or a passport number. Individuals (taxpayers) are told that personal information is necessary in order for them to receive a refund or benefit payment. In some cases threats or coercive language may be used to scare people into paying a fictitious debt to the CRA. In other instances individuals are asked to visit a false CRA website where they are asked to verify their identity by providing personal information. Do not respond to these fraudulent communications or click on any links provided. If you do receive information indicating you owe money to the CRA, always call and verify on a trusted number. The following information about the CRA is vital to remember. The CRA will never send emails with links requesting
personal or financial information, ask for personal information of any type through email or text message, request payments by prepaid credit card, disclose taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization has been provided by that taxpayer or leave personal information on the answering on an answering machine. If something does not seem right and you are doubting the validity of the communication ask yourself the following: did I sign up to receive online mail through my account or business account, did I provide my email address on my income tax and benefit return to receive mail online, am I expecting money from CRA, is the person requesting information that I would not provide in my tax return or I know is already on CRA file and lastly is this too good to be true? More often than not if it is too good to be true than it is not true. The second scam involves telephone immigration scams under the pretence of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), which is occurring across Canada. These fraudulent calls has the caller identifying him/herself as a CIC officer calling to collect additional personal information and/or to request
a fine be paid immediately to avoid deportation. The caller may attempt to scare individuals by quoting laws supposedly violated by the person being contacted and threatening with warrants for their arrest, jail, loss of immigration status and deportation if a fine is not paid. I nd iv idua ls have also been asked to provide personal information including, dates of birth, passport numbers, social insurance numbers (SIN), landing dates, credit card numbers and or bank account information. Under no circumstances does CIC contact clients by telephone for the purpose of collecting fines to avoid deportation and will never ask for payments via purchasing prepaid credit cards or through a private money transfer service provider. With regards to CIC always remember the following; no one can guarantee a job or visa to Canada, only immigration officers in Canada, at Canadian embassies, high commissions and consulates decide to issue visas, fees for Canadian government services are usually paid to the Receiver General for Canada. The Battle River Community Foundation will be hosting an Open House on Thursday, June 23. This annual gathering is an ideal opportunity to hear members of the Foundation Board of Directors speak about the successes of the last year – how many new funds have been started, how much has been allocated back to worthy local causes and how many dollars remain in the endowment. But even more importantly, the annual public meeting is an ideal opportunity to meet and hear from people who have been directly involved with giving and receiving. John Person will speak about why he and his wife Carmen have chosen to give back to the community through the Battle River Community Foundation. Margaret Holliston, Executive Director of Camrose and District Support Services, will speak about the difference the Foundation’s grants have made to local organizations which support people, from programs for pre-schoolers to those which help victims of violence make a new beginning. Featured speaker will be Dale Jones of Sedgewick. Dale is a cattleman and auctioneer, as well as husband to Nanette. The couple supports the Foundation both financially and philosophically and Dale is going to talk about why he thinks BRCF is of value to east central Alberta communities.
Please join us at our Open House on Thursday, June 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Norsemen Inn, Camrose Helping you make good things happen, forever!

There are five important ways to improve and keep your mental wellbeing in tact for the every day stresses in life. Five Ways to Wellbeing promotes a healthy lifestyle for busy people and it starts with mental health. “To be in shape physically, we are told to eat our fruits and vegetables, receive good sleep, so we know there is a recipe for how to be healthy,” said Tammy Richard of Alberta Health Services addiction and mental health. “We never talk about our mental health. It is a state of well being where we feel good and recognize our abilities, so we know what we can do. We can handle the every day stresses of life and effectively make a contribution to our community,” explained Richard. “Everyone has experienced stress. Some may have more difficulties than others. We can bounce back from stress and be productive.” Mental health is something that everyone needs to take care of. Being positive is the base of strong mental health. “Good mental health makes us resilient. It can help you flourish in life. Depression is going to be the second leading cause of mental illness. It is important for us to improve our mental health,” continued Richard. “The Five Ways to Wellbeing were developed in England and some of the things you may already be doing. The first step is connections. When we connect, we connect with people around us.
Connections build mental health because we feel better with ourselves. What is really important is when we walk away from a conversation with others, that it leaves us with a positive view.” Some personalities can energize others. “A positive connection can lift your spirits and improve your outlook on life. It makes you feel good inside,” said Richard. The second way is giving back. “Help a stranger or family member. Volunteering your time helps the larger community and helps us see outside of ourselves to know there is something more. Some people think they don’t have time or money to give. Think of something smaller and thank people for helping you. Smile or open a door for someone,” said Richard. Keep learning is another step. “Just because you are out of school, doesn’t mean you can’t still learn. At whatever age you are in life, you are able to keep learning.” Take notice of your surroundings. “Whether you walk or drive to work, take notice of things around you. Take notice of what you are feeling and be curious of what is going on surrounding you,” said Richard. “Notice the birds and the changing of the seasons. The more we notice what is going on, the better we will feel.” The fifth way is being active. “We know how important it is for our physical health, but even when we are physically active, it releases chemicals in our brain to feel good. It is good for our mental health as well,” she

added. “Park at the far end of the parking lot and walk to where you need to go.” If you don’t want to exercise, change the word to move and get up to get a glass of water, or just walk around. “Sitting has become the new smoking. Harmful effects are happening to people because they don’t move around enough. Get up and move around at least once an hour. Whatever movement you want to do, it helps physically and mentally,” said Richard. She explained how to receive help through community resources. “Our family serving your family since 1906”
Edwin Nelius Grue January 4, 1921 ~ June 14, 2016 Dad’s Life Story Ed was born on January 4, 1921 at Czar, Alberta. He was the fourth child of Oscar and Annie Grue and brother to Bethora, Doris, Evert and Marvin. Ed was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Czar. Ed and his brother Evert farmed together from 1939 to 1942 in the Czar area. Back in those days, they only had horses to help them with the work. In 1943 Ed moved near Armena, Alberta where he rented a farm until 1948. Growing up Ed became friends with Lloyd Williams. Lloyd had a younger sister named Pearl who worked at the local Red and White store in Hughenden. Edwin and Pearl attended the same church, became friends and soon were an item. With such close family ties the two did not have much privacy during their courting. However, Pearl had a key to the store where they retreated during a severe winter storm on February 14, 1943. Edwin proposed to Pearl at the store on Valentines Day and that is how their love story began. Ed and Pearl were married on October 24, 1943 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church
in Czar following the Sunday morning service. Pearl’s Dad, Andrew, requested the wedding take place on a Sunday so that he did not have to stop harvesting. Pearl’s family always treated Sunday as a day of rest spent together as a family. Ed and Pearl resided in Armena where they farmed and, soon after, started their family. They were blessed with four children. Karen (1944), Dale (1946), Dell (1951) and Brian (1953). They enjoyed day trips to Miquelon Lake, tenting holidays to visit relatives and Sunday visits with neighbors and friends. Time spent together with family and friends was always a priority. In 1948 Ed and Pearl, along with his brother Evert, purchased the Armena General Store. After the sale of the store Ed began trucking and driving the school bus until 1951. This was followed by a 30-year career working in the oil patch. From 1951 to 1965 Ed was the Sunday School Superintendent at Scandia Lutheran Church. He also worked with the Boy Scouts as an Assistant Cub Master for a few years. Music was Dad’s passion. Along with Evert Grue, Vernon Lyseng and Bert Lomnes they started a men’s quartet. Ed and Evert sang together as young boys and continued to do so at various functions until Evert passed in 2009. In 1965 after Karen and Dale were out on their own, Ed and Pearl, along with Dell, Brian and their young nephew Shane Williams, moved to Stettler. They enjoyed 15 years in Stettler while Ed worked for Gulf Oil. Ed was active on the church
board, taught confirmation classes, sang in a men’s quartet and was a member of the church and community choirs. Ed also joined the Gideons, which remained very important to him throughout his life. Ed and Pearl cherished the friendships they formed with their church and community friends while in Stettler. Throughout their lives Ed and Pearl were avid campers, loved the outdoors and took every opportunity to travel. One of their most memorable adventures was to Norway and Sweden in 1979 to research each of their families’ histories. After retiring from Gulf Oil in 1980, Ed and Pearl moved to Camrose. Ed began another career working at Bethany until he fully retired in 1985. Shortly after, he and Pearl moved to Hillside Village where they enjoyed 19 years together. Ed and Pearl spent their golden years of retirement travelling to Hawaii, Alaska and throughout the United States. They were most happy, however, when spending weekends camping at The Ponderosa (The Petersen farm near Armena) with Ed’s brother Evert and his wife Ruth. Together, they entertained friends and family every chance they got. Another passion of Dad’s was horses and he loved to share this lifelong hobby with his family and friends. He taught several of his grandchildren how to ride on his horses Lightning and Queenie that he kept at his friend’s farm near Stettler. Later in life he treated both family and friends to sleigh rides in the winter and buggy rides in the warmer months.
Much to his daughter’s chagrin, Dad purchased and then broke two black Percherons with his friend, Bob Blair, at the age of 88. This was something he always dreamed of doing and, in true Ed Grue form, he did it! Another highlight was the opportunity to partake in the Make a Wish Trail Ride in Kananaskis in celebration of Dad’s 90th birthday in 2011. Dad led the way in a fourhour trail ride along with 14 family and friends on the most beautiful sun-filled summer day. In 2012 Pearl’s health declined and she moved to Sunrise Village. A few months later Ed moved into Deer Meadows Lodge and started a new chapter in his life. Dad was a wonderful father, a loyal and devoted husband, a caring and active grandfather and a trusted friend. His love was unconditional. He was thankful to have celebrated 71 years of marriage with Pearl. Dad was healthy and active throughout his life and in his last few days was surrounded by family and friends at the hospital. Dad always had a big smile on his face and a twinkle in his blue eyes. He was loved and admired by everyone who met him. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Karen Hansen, sons Dale Grue (Donna), Dell Grue (Jo) and Brian Grue (Pat); seven grandchildren, Lori Hansen (Brad), Cathy Mowat (Wade), Jennifer Trydal (Chris), Michael Grue (Raquel), Waylon Grue, Kyra Grue and Liam Grue; six great-grandchildren Wyatt Mowat, Mason Trydal, Amy Mowat, Nevaya Grue,
Adelina Trydal and Ayden Grue. Ed is also survived by his brother Marvin Grue and sisters-in-law Ruth Grue and Madelaine Williams and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. Ed was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Annie Grue, his sisters Bethora and Doris, his brother Evert, sister in law Ruth Johnson and brothers in law Lloyd Williams, Clayton Williams and Lloyd Johnson. The love of his life, Pearl, passed away on August 6, 2015. They are all now reunited in heaven. Should family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute, Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose, Alberta, The Gideons International in Canada, Hastings Lake Lutheran Bible Camp or a charity of your choice. Thank you for all the great memories. A funeral service was held on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 2:00 pm from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Calvin Skriver officiating. Interment has taken place in the Scandia Lutheran Cemetery, Armena. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the charity of one’s choice . Camrose has the second highest lightning strikes By Lori Larsen
Submitted Photo Camrose took second place on ForitsAlberta’s top 10 list of hot spots for lightning strikes around the province. Albeit fascinating and beautiful, lightning packs a powerful punch, as seen in the photo above.
Gaming his way to Edmonton By Lori Larsen
Since its appearance in 1981 Donkey Kong has had some die hard gamers fixated to an arcade or monitor trying to wrack up points in hopes of obtaining that high score. Jason Brittain, of Camrose, just happens to be one of those lucky few who has been able to conquer the game, earning him a spot as top scorer and an invitation to the Edmonton Gaming Tournament on June 25th and 26th and to The ReplayFX Arcade and Video Game Festival held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US on July 28 to 31. Jason will be attending the Classic Video Game Championship in Edmonton on June 25 and 26 held at NAIT north lobby. “I won first place in local champion qualifier at NAIT in Edmonton on Feb. 7,” said Jason. Unfortunately Jason said he will not be able to attend the Pittsburgh festival due to some financial restraints. Jason has been playing Nintendo, Super Nintendo and different console games since a young age. “I guess I was pretty good at it, there
was just something about gaming that I really liked.” And Jason is not alone. Canada has the third largest video game industry, following USA and Japan, with close to $3 billion added to Canada’s GDP (gross domestic product) in 2015. In 2011 after watching the documentary King of Kong, featuring Steve Weibe and Billy Mitchell as rival gamers going for world records, Jason focused his playing on the game Donkey Kong. “My top score then was 90,000 points,” said Jason. While suffering from Charcot foot, Jason was confined to a wheelchair and had to spend more than eight months off of work. During that time, and with limited mobility he began practicing more. “Now after five years of playing Donkey Kong my score is 1,001,600 points and I am ranked 35th in the world.” Although not quite the Canadian record holder, that title goes to Jeff Willms, Jason is determined to give all the champions a run for their money. Jason tasted his first vic-
tory in February at Edmonton during a classical video gaming tournament. Despite a broken wrist set in a cast, he was able to take home first place, beating the competition out by only one point. To score a million points or more players are looking at dedicating up to two and a half hours or more of steady playing time. To some that may seem like a lot of time, but it is not much different than a three hour chess game or three hours waiting for the perfect photo of a rare bird; it’s not time wasted if you are enjoying what you do. Unlike the original arcade game, Jason plays online on a MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) which is designed to recreate the hardware used in the arcade systems. To view Jason playing games or practicing for his tournament in Edmonton visit his twitch at www.twitch.tv/ retrogeekgamer36 or to view information on the tournament itself visit www.replayfx.org.
If you have ever wondered what causes thunder and lightning the answer is reasonably straight forward. A thunderstorm is the result of a series of sudden electrical discharges, which occur because of the atmospheric conditions. The charges cause flashes of light (lightning) and trembling sound waves (thunder). At this time of year, because of sudden changes, we tend to experience more thunderstorms, normally occurring in late spring lasting until September. “Recent analysis of our service territory shows that there are hot spots for lightning strikes all over the province,” said Jen Cain, communications advisor, corporate communication for FortisAlberta. “As such, we have collected a top 10 list for lightning strikes in our service territory and Camrose ranked number two with 2.16 strikes per square kilometer (total 9,313 strikes). In 2014, Camrose placed seventh with 1.75 strikes per square kilometer (total 7,561 strikes).” FortisAlberta’s top 10 hot spots were Sedgewick first, Camrose second, Redwater third, Fort Saskatchewan fourth, Strathmore fifth, Wainwright sixth, Sherwood Park seventh, Lacombe eighth, Edson ninth and Vulcan 10th. Consistent hot spots for lightning around Alberta are the result of geography and weather patterns. In Alberta alone, last year there were over 185,000 lightning strikes recorded in 54 of FortisAlberta’s major service points. Lightning, while a beauti-
ful and fascinating aspect of nature, can also be extremely dangerous. According to Environment Canada there are approximately nine to 10 lightning related fatalities and between 150 to 160 injuries in an average year in Canada. FortisAlberta offers the following safety tips to help you stay safer during a thunderstorm. First, prepare your electrical property before the storm hits by disconnecting electronics and electrical appliances including radios, computers and televisions. Second, stay indoors where possible and keep away from doors, windows, fireplaces or anything that can conduct electricity such as radiators, stoves, sinks and metal pipes. Use battery operated appliances and do not handle electrical equipment or telephones. A cellular phone is the safest means of communication. Lastly, take great precaution if you are caught outdoors during a thunderstorm by taking shelter when you count 30 seconds or less between seeing lightning and hearing the thunder. Stay clear of objects that conduct electricity such as water, tractors, golf clubs and carts, motorcycles, lawn mowers and bicycles. Avoid being the highest point in an open area, get low by crouching down and cover your ears. Stay away from tall objects such as tree, hilltops or poles. By following these tips and respecting the force and potential threat of a thunderstorm, a person can avoid the possibility of injury or death and enjoy the magnificence of nature’s light show safely.

As chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, my duty is to oversee the committee’s deliberation on the Public Accounts of Canada and the reports of the Auditor General of Canada. The Public Accounts of Canada report itself is a three volume document that publishes annually the federal government’s revenues, expenditures, budgetary balance, liabilities, assets and accumulated deficit. Our committee studied the 201415 public accounts. The Auditor General of Canada examines the annual Public Accounts document and reports to Parliament through our committee. The current Auditor General, Michael Ferguson, appeared before our committee and I am pleased to report that Government of Canada received its 17th consecutive unmodified audit opinion from the Auditor General of Canada. This means that the government properly reported its overall financial performance for the 2014-15 fiscal year to Parliament and to Canadians. The Receiver General for Canada reports in the Public Accounts document on page 14 that there was a budgetary surplus of $1.9 billion in 2014-15. The Conservative Party campaigned in 2011 on a promise to balance the federal budget by the end of our mandate, and the Public Accounts of Canada proves that we got the jobs done by 2015, like we promised. The 2014-15 Public Accounts document is the final report on the performance of our previous Conservative government. Canadians can have confidence in the financial stewardship of our party, now serving as the Official Opposition and the government in-waiting, as we are referred to in Parliament. We already know that next year’s public accounts will describe the current Liberal government’s deficit spending that is already underway. Community supports Ewashko’s long journey By Lori Larsen
The Camrose store owner/manager Rochelle Daniels and her staff of Real Canadian Superstore and President’s Choice Children’s Charity presented Aidan Ewashko and his mom Julie with $4,102 to provide an advanced bio-mechanical rehab and rehab machine. “It’s wonderful to be able to help a child reach their full potential. We are so proud to partner with President’s Choice Children’s Charity and to help children right here in our own community,” said Daniels. The team at Real Canadian Superstore has raised money towards this gift through the generous support of their customers during in-store campaigns, direct employee contributions, barbecues and bottle drives. All funds raised by the Children’s Charity in Alberta go directly toward supporting Alberta families whose children have physical or development disabilities, as well as nutrition programs aimed at fighting childhood hunger. In 2012, the Children’s Charity granted $1.1 million to 57 families and 141 nutrition programs, which fed over 20,490 children in Alberta. In his short little life three-year-old Aidan Ewashko has already battled a host of complex medical needs. He has been diagnosed with mixed cerebral palsy quadriplegia, moderate cortical visual impairment (he
is legally blind) and severe delays in motor and communication skills, on top of which he suffers from seizures. This remarkable little boy has endured more in his life than most adults in their entire lifetime. At six-weeksold Aidan started hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Currently he receives Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration (MNRI) and Advanced Biomechanical Rehabilitation (ABR). ABR is a hands-on method of manual applications to Aidan’s body, based on biomechanical principles, which for the most part are performed by his mother, Julie Ewashko. The approach creates the strengthening and remodeling of fascia (connective tissues) encouraging the realignment of their musculoskeletal structure and their overall global development. As a result of generous donations from President’s Choice Children’s Charity, the Al Shamal Hospital/ Hope Air and family and friends, Aidan will begin the ABR Thrive and Flourish program in Toronto on Aug. 24 to 26 and continue to use the ABR compression machine at home. For more information on ABR, visit www.abramericas. com. To learn more about President’s Choice Children’s Charity visit www.pc.ca/ charity or call 1-800-3611168.
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Julie and son Aidan Ewashko received $4,102 from Real Canadian Superstore manager/ store owner Rochelle Daniels on behalf of the staff. A belated birthday party was held at the store on June 17. Aidan’s journey has involved various therapies, starting with hyperbaric oxygen treatments at six weeks old. He is currently receiving Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration (MNRI) and Advanced Bio-mechanical Rehabilitation.
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Julie and son Aidan Ewashko received $2,225 from Elks exalted ruler Gerry Czapp from the Elks and Royal Purple, and then the Elks added another $300 assist in funding his complex medical needs including mixed cerebral palsy quadriplegia, moderate cortical visual impairment (he is legally blind), and severe delays in motor and communication skills. He also suffers from seizures.
Letters from the past gives hope for the future By Murray Green
The Camrose and District Ministerial Association, along with Mayor Norm Mayer and Reeve Don Gregorwich celebrated the seventh annual Camrose County and City Prayer Breakfast at the Norsemen Inn in May. It was time to reflect on the past with a theme of
Celebrating Our Spiritual Heritage. John Person portrayed Father Pere Hippolyte Beillevaire, one of the first settlers in the area. Camrose was a meeting place for Cree, Blackfoot and Metis. Person read some of Beillevaire’s letters from his brother in France. “Dear brother, so here I am in the

new world. After landing in New York, I booked passage on a train bound for St. Paul, Minnesota. I headed north to Fort Garry, which is little more than a trading post,” he said. The area around present-day Duhamel was first settled in the mid-1870s when the Salois and Dumont families migrated here from Lac Sainte Anne. The Metis presence at the site was bolstered in the early 1880s with the arrival of the large Laboucane family from White Horse Plains, near Fort Garry. “We then travelled from Fort Garry on horse and cart. It was a tough journey. We wound around massive mud pits and ended up in St. Albert. I am studying Cree and the ways of the Indian people. On March 18, 1881, my apprenticeship is finished and I am going to leave the mission soon,” said Person quoting Father Beillevaire. The Laboucanes established the Duhamel settlement as a centre for their trading and freighting operations throughout western Canada. Shortly after their arrival, the Laboucanes invited Father Beillevaire, an Oblate mis-
sionary at Hobbema, to visit their settlement. “I’m going to the Cree settlement, perhaps 50 to 60 miles south of St. Albert. I’m taking with me a 17-year-old, a real Indian who was raised in a mission, but can speak French,” he continued. “I will receive an allowance, a horse and a cart.” The Oblates had previously founded several missions for largely Metis populations at Lac Ste. Anne, Lac La Biche, and St. Albert, endeavouring to help these communities face the challenges of a declining fur market, the demise of the great buffalo herds and the beginnings of Euro-Canadian settlement in the region. “Who thought the sky could hold so much rain,” he wrote in May. “They chopped down trees (to build a hut) on Monday and by Thursday the brothers were fitting windows and a door. After it was completed, the roof was covered in spruce bark. It was a rude accommodation, made more uncomfortable with a leaky roof. The wind howls through the many cracks in the walls,” he added in a letter. “I had to leave the cabin because the conditions were too severe in this hut. We had a cold spell
that was very severe. I made my way to the Battle River. Sometimes on the prairies we are overtaken by the snowstorms. We sleep with our guns, so if the snow gets too deep we can shoot holes in the snow to get air to breathe,” Person read. Father Beillevaire ministered to the residents at Laboucane Settlement—as the site was then known in 1881-82, celebrating mass in a modest structure that served as both the priest’s accommodation and a chapel. “If only I had more resources. Land is inexpensive and I would like to build a farm with a house. It would be an example for the Indians.” Arch Bishop Joseph Duhamel of Ottawa helped with funds for a church bell; as a result the community was named Duhamel. “I cover a big area from Hobbema to Wainwright to serve the spiritual needs, often for those dying. I myself remain in good health, thanks to tobacco. When it is moist it is going to rain, when it is dry the skies clear.” “Whatever blessing I have been to this land and people, I myself have been blessed 100 fold,” said Father Beillevaire.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else. The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Residents speak out on redistricting plan By Lori Larsen
Concerned residents of Camrose spoke out against an application made to the City for the redistricting of two lots located at 4825- and 4823-54 Street from R2 (mixed use residential district) to R4 (high density residential district) during a regular City council meeting public hearing on April 18. The application for redistricting was re-instituted by Fieldstone Developments Inc. after having been suspended in April 2015. Fieldstone representative Cliff Drever informed council and attendees at the hearing that Fieldstone did not know at that point (prior to possible approval of the redistricting) exactly what type of project it could build on the property and therefore had no conceptual drawings or plans to present. “Fieldstone has been asked by numerous individuals to build another building in this area that allows people to live within walking distances of services such as shopping, recreation, banking and entertainment,” said Drever. “The new building will not be over four stories and we will have parking that will exceed the requirements of the City of Camrose.” Drever also indicated a plan to incorporate green technology. “Our goal is simple,” added Drever. “We want to build a building that is complementary to the neighborhood while allowing new residents to share this beautiful part of the city with existing and future residents.” Public voice
Residents living in and around the proposed area of development took turns presenting their reasons for requesting council members reject the application. Some of the concerns included a possible decrease in property value, noise (during construction as well as after), increased traffic and parking, privacy concerns, increased strain on City services such as water and sewer, crowding, and the effect the proposed development would have on the overall ambience of the mature lakeside area. “Erecting a large condo,

nine feet from the side of my house and potentially 23 metres (high) as R4 high density allows will contravene Section 641 of the Act (Municipal Government Act),” remarked Barry Green a neighboring resident of the proposed development. “It would definitely interfere with the amenities of the neighborhood. “The primary purpose of zoning bylaws is to protect property values and make sure development maintains the form and character of the neighborhood.” Twylene Hicks, another resident, voiced her concerns around the rezoning of the neighborhood in question by first stating the developers had yet to submit any plans on the intended development. “We have no idea what it might be this time, other than what they have already told us,” said Hicks. “Although they tell us they are going to build something and it tends to be something else. We are experiencing that right now in our neighborhood.” Hicks continued speaking more specifically on the application to have the area redistricted and the fact that a large condominium complex would devalue the historical homes that exist in the surrounding area. “Allowing this trend to continue to creep into our neighborhoods of historical and long established single family homes is what we would like to see halted.” Hicks indicated that the development of the lots was not the issue, but what the development ultimately would be was of great concern. “What’s there right now (in the way of districting) will allow them to build a duplex, four-plex or six-plex of two stories, maybe even three, that will still meet your density without changing the zoning,” she said. “Thoughtful and practical planning is what is required here.” Deputy City manager Kim Isaak indicated there were seven written submissions prior to the day of public hearing and four additional written submissions received on the day of the public hearing.

During a presentation by University of Alberta Augustana Campus Dean Allen Berger to the City of Camrose committee of whole meeting he announced that Augustana was awarded an Alberta Emerald Award, June 13. The award was presented by the Alberta Emerald Foundation (AEF) on June 8 during the 25th annual Emerald Awards Celebration held at Calgary’s Telus Spark. “Augustana was recognized by the Emerald Foundation with the Post Secondary Emerald Award for 2016,” said Berger. “That award was given for our Community Service Learning initiatives with regard to the environment.” The awards are unique to Alberta and are given in recognition of environmental excellence in 12 cross-sectoral categories. “We have been recognized as a leader across the province with that Emerald Award. It is something we hope to leverage with continued work on the sustainability fund.” Berger also congratulated the City regarding the recent approval and move forward on the solar installation at the EnCana Arena. For 25 years, the Emerald Awards have been given to large and small businesses, individuals, not-for-profit organizations, community groups, youth and governments in recognition and celebration of exceptional environmental achievements. This year the AEF received 70 nominations. After review by a panel of judges three finalists, one for each of the three categories, were selected. “Over our Foundation’s quarter century, we have seen a great evolution in sustainable practices across all sectors in our province,” said AEF chair of the board Andy Etmanski. “We have witnessed the inspiring effect Albertan EcoHeroes have had on others, both in our province and around the globe. “Each recipient represents a unique, positive, and innovative approach to sustainable practices. We are thrilled to share their stories with Alberta as we showcase their hard work and dedication to the environment.” For more information on the Alberta Emerald Awards visit www.emeraldfoundation.ca.
