Submitted The Camrose Crossfire U12 team captured provincial silver medals in Irma on July 9 and 10. The team consisted of, back row from left, assistant coach Andrea VanBrabant, assistant coach Melanie Weinkauf, Allyson Thain, Chelsey Chartrand, Sarah Raymond, Emily Watters, Taylor Willoughby and coach Kathy Koehli-Watters. Middle row from left, Kiana Sikstrom, Sydney Kowalchuk, Ava Pearson, Ariana Lundstrom and Maryn Skaret. Front row left to right, Edyn VanBrabant and Bryn Weinkauf. By Murray Green

The Camrose Crossfire U12 team came home with silver medals after competing in softball provincials in Irma July 8 to 10. Camrose met Marwayne in the first game and exploded on offence to gain a 15-3 victory. The Crossfire took on the Edmonton McLeod Royals in the second contest and Camrose again showed plenty of offence with a 16-3 win. The local girls suffered a setback in the third game as

they lost a close match against the host Irma squad, 10-6. Camrose fought hard to reach the playoffs with an 11-10 win over Innisfail in extra innings. “After a five hour rain delay and change of venue, Camrose beat Provost to advance to the final and a rematch against Irma,” said coach Kathy Koehli-Watters. “We lost the gold medal final against Irma 10-7 after playing both playoff games back to back after such a long delay. We had great play by all

12 girls and fantastic pitching by our pitchers,” she said, thanking her players. The team was coached by Koehli-Watters, Andrea VanBrabant and Melanie Weinkauf. Silver medal winning players include Edyn VanBrabant, Bryn Weinkauf, Kiana Sikstrom, Sydney Kowalchuk, Ava Pearson, Ariana Lundstrom, Maryn Skaret, Allyson Thain, Chelsey Chartrand, Sarah Raymond, Emily Watters and Taylor Willoughby.

She also makes it clear that clients can pop in anytime, without an appointment, during her convenient business hours (Mon.- Fri., 9-4:30 every weekday). Owner, Vinesation

A few years ago Bridget and her son Mike were looking to start a business but weren’t sure what kind of business. Then, within a few weeks of each other, they each received a gift pack of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Their business idea was launched and they haven’t looked back. Vinesation Olive Oil and Vinegar Tasting Room opened two years ago with help from family and friends. It features over 40 flavors of healthy extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars, rubs and accessories. The feedback from customers has been outstanding. “Camrose is full of foodies,” says Bridget with a smile. More and more are discovering the delicious and healthy ways oils and vinegars can enrich the taste of food. “Our flavored olive oils are created by either fusing the oil at time of crushing with another flavor or it’s infused with something like garlic after it has been pressed,” says Bridget, who is passionate about the benefits of olive oil. The quality of the oils at Vinesation is tested rigorously, it’s never older than 24 months, a claim that cannot be made by standard grocery stores. If you’re ready to expand your culinary horizon, visit Vinesation today. Watch for cooking demonstrations with Chef Tyson Wright from The Hart House. Recipe ideas, private tasting parties and gift baskets are here too.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Good servant, bad master

This quote made me laugh out loud. I’ll tell you why in a minute. “There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision, and for whom the lighting of every cigar, the drinking of every cup, the time of rising and going to bed every day, and the beginning of every bit of work, are subjects of express volitional deliberation. Full half the time of such a man goes to the deciding, or regretting, of matters which ought to be so ingrained in him as practically not to exist for his consciousness at all.” ~ William James: Psychology: Briefer Course The contrast Forgetting for the moment “the lighting of every cigar” (not part of my daily life), what made me laugh out loud was the contrast between William James’ perspective and mine, for several decades of my life. In my twenties and thirties, I relished most aspects of my time as a teacher of middle school students. But when I moved on from public school teaching, one of the things I did not miss was having buzzers go off every 37.5 minutes to change classes no matter what was going on in the moment. Post-teaching, I relished the freedom of being able to adjust the time to fit the purpose, of “go with the flow” time. I loved being able to have “the time of rising and going to bed” be different every day if I felt like it. That felt like freedom. As I moved into my forties and fifties, I tried to be as conscious and intentional as I could, in greater proportions every day. “Mindfulness” was a big deal. I wanted “the beginning of every bit of work” to be “subjects of express volitional deliberation.” The idea of something being so ingrained “as practically not to exist for his consciousness at all” was the opposite of how I wanted to be. I aspired to precisely what William James considered misery. The unpredictability The second reason I laughed at the quote was the unpredictability of life. Who would predict that I of all people, with my Attention Deficit all-over-the-map mind and years of dedication to not being fenced in by routines, would become a fan of the potential benefits of regular systems and routines? It is just delicious. It’s been a gradual process to realize that, the more I can create routines to take care of some things to be “so ingrained as practically not to exist in consciousness at all,” the more I have time and space for creativity and enjoyment. More down to earth benefits include avoiding unnecessary hassles like having to pay penalties for late submission of various forms! My takeaway: good servants, bad masters Routines and systems can be excellent servants, if they’re designed to fit the person or people who use them. They can save us time and inconvenience; free us from mundane or boring activities, ensure important tasks are done on time, reduce the possibility of error, and open time for creative expansive experiences. Routines and systems can also be bad masters. For example, as a community development person, I was often frustrated with bureaucratic requirements that got in the way of how communities actually work. As a government employee I was sometimes irritated by procedures that sucked up time with no visible benefit. As a private consultant, part of my work was often to help clients find ways around their own organizations’ systems that blocked them from accomplishing the very things the organization was set up to achieve. In our personal lives, if we’re locked into certain routine ways of perceiving or doing things, that keeps us from recognizing new opportunities that would enrich our lives. What about you? What routines or habits are serving you well? What routines or habits could be limiting you or getting in your way? How do you change or eliminate routines that no longer serve? I’ve been thinking about those questions a lot this summer, and hope you find them useful too. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

I am inspired by the July 12 letter to editor of Robert Earley and Lori Larsen’s column of same date. In fact I feel all residents of Camrose should follow the example of the City. Audley Gaudet Camrose Amazing Camrosians

My husband and I moved to Camrose three years ago today. We are now moving back to BC to be closer to family. There are so many people from Camrose that I wanted to individually thank. The community in general is what made the move so welcoming in the first place. I was hoping to write a letter to all of the beautiful Camrosians about my experience-how they turned this city slicker into a country girl-something so that I could say goodbye and thank you! Aman Hunt Camrose

Ski jump disappointment

We, (Camrose Nordic Park Society) feel a need to apologize to the citizens of Camrose for the failure of our endeavor to refurbish and repurpose the ski scaffold. We proposed a viable plan, ideas to repaint and repurpose the scaffold with stairs and a viewing platform, all to safety standards. The proposal to the city council contained engineer plans, monies already pledged by persons passionate about our City’s heritage, visuals and a newly formed society to enable us to apply for grants to continue the work that needed to be done. The council was informed that grated stairs would minimize snow build-up and slipping and that the powder coating of the scaffold would have a sustainability factor of 25 years, so their concern of maintenance should not have been a huge issue. This project was to be carried out at no cost to the City taxpayer; an icon for the city and a usable structure that the citizens of Camrose would be proud of. There were only two councillors, councillor Lindstrand and councillor Hycha with the foresight to see that the project had merit. Instead, the City council chose to demolish the scaffold (at what cost?) and initiate their own agenda to erect signs and a commemorative alternative (at what cost?)

With a city already over budget on numerous projects, the council elected to add yet another cost to the high taxes of the city taxpayers. Could not the unbudgeted cost of the demolition project be better used for a decent swimming pool for our youth, not just a fix? At the very least, could council not have used the cost of demolition to fund their ideas of a bigger playground, an annex to the Valley Ski Lodge and information boards? So, if we must go the route of council, wouldn’t it be impressive for tourists to visit at the lodge, look out the window and see a magnificent scaffold and just maybe, they would have the urge to go to the top to see for miles and get the feeling of what the ski jumpers must have felt. And, as a last note, with comments from city councillors such as it’s like putting lipstick on a pig, we have to wonder what they are doing as councillors. Is this how you represent what’s best for Camrose citizens? Shame on you, councillor Wood and councillor Throndson for being so unprofessional and rude. Camrose Nordic Park Society

Teams battle for playoffs By Murray Green

The Ryley Rebels and Armena Royals share first place with a 9-3 record. However, the Beaumont Angels and Rosalind Athletics are close with an 8-5 record in the Powerline Baseball League. The Leduc Milleteers at 7-5 are also in the hunt

for a playoff position. The top four teams qualify for playoffs with the first and second place clubs gaining home field advantage in the opening round. On July 12, Rosalind beat Holden 5-0, Beaumont edged Leduc 1-0 and Armena defeated Bardo 6-4. Rained out games from

Police warn telephone scam going rampant By Lori Larsen

Camrose Police Service once again wants to warn citizens to be wary of a telephone scam that is defrauding people out of thousands of dollars. “The gist of this particular scam is they (person committing the scam falsely representing themselves as an agent of the Canadian Revenue Agency) frighten people into thinking there is a warrant out for their arrest and that they are immediately going to be arrested unless they clear this alleged debt up,” explained Camrose Police Service Deputy Chief Lee Foreman. The fraudulent caller uses scare tactics and speaks very quickly allowing the victim very little time to respond or think and will try to get the victim worked up so they will buy into the scam. “They (victims) are quite concerned the police are going to show up at their door right away and take them into custody.” Citizens should be aware that the police are not going out and arresting people for tax debt. “The victims are looking for an out so the con man essentially convinces them that they can clear up this debt and avoid all the consequences by going to local large stores to buy iTunes cards to satisfy the debt,” added Foreman. In this particular scam the victims are purchasing thousands of dollars worth of iTunes cards, scratching the activations codes and then phoning back the number given by the con artist and providing the codes to the con artists. “Now that the card has been activated and it can not be reimbursed, they (con artists) have the value of the iTunes card and the activation code which I am guessing they turn around and sell at a reduced rate.” In many cases even once the cards are purchased, and not necessarily scratched to activate the code, the retailer cannot issue a refund. These fraudulent callers

are able to obtain telephone numbers, through a software program, that are associated with the CRA, RCMP and other government organizations and will appear on the victim’s caller display. The police strongly advise not to feel falsely secure about the number that appears on caller id or your cellular phone and instead of using the telephone number supplied by the con artist, look up the legitimate number for the Canada Revenue Agency and contact them. “We are doing everything in our means to try and educate the public,” said Camrose Police Service Deputy Chief Lee Foreman. “We want to avoid having people victimized because once that transaction is done it is virtually impossible to get their money back.” Red flags

More often than not these scams send up red flags that cause doubt or concern. Some of the warning signs may include the following. The Canada Revenue Agency uses mail out correspondence and will rarely telephone a person, especially to satisfy a debt. The CRA, under no circumstances, would request a citizen to settle debts with prepaid credit cards or gift cards. The CRA does not use coercive or threatening language. The fraudulent caller will be very rushed, use threats and intimidation and will not afford the victim much time to talk or think. The fraudulent caller may specify the particular retail store where they want the cards purchased. The fraudulent caller will indicate that the victim must purchase the cards immediately. CRA usually does not demand payment immediately but provides a degree of time. The fraudulent caller will tell the victim not to talk to anyone and may become nervous if the victim mentions calling a lawyer. Preventative measures

CPS have undertaken

and discovered an error and that the victim is eligible for a refund, then ask them to provide banking information so they can directly deposit a refund.” If a person uses direct deposit for tax refunds through the CRA that information will already be on file and there would be no need for an alleged agent to telephone and request the information again. Protect yourself

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Police Service provided posters for retailers to warn customers about the telephone scam that is taking place and defrauding residents out of thousands of dollars.

many measures to help prevent further victims of this and any other scam. “We have taken steps to notify the stores in Camrose,” explained Foreman. Retailers’ employees have been asked to make note of any individuals purchasing large volumes of gift cards of any type including iTunes or prepaid credit cards. “The employees in the stores are asking the customers if they might not be falling prey to the CRA scam going on right now,” said Foreman. “Unfortunately, the conman tells the victim not to tell anyone or they (victim) could be charged under the Disclosure Act.” According to Foreman no law or act exists, it was invented by the con artists as part of the elaborate scam to intimidate the victim. Because the con artist uses the threat of arrest or charges, victims feel real concern and avoid admitting to store employees they were asked to purchase the cards by an alleged CRA representative. Foreman advises it is better to be safe than sorry and when in doubt, slow down, think and do not make rush

decisions, especially when it comes to financial transactions. CPS has taken further initiatives in alerting and protecting citizens from these scams by posting posters in many retail stores throughout Camrose, posting warnings and information on their website, notifying local media and educating citizens. “The best way to stop it is to stop victimization, so it is no longer profitable for these people (suspects) to be pulling these scams.” Foreman also suggested that citizens not be intimidated to ask questions when they receive a telephone call from someone alleging to be with the CRA or any official agency. “Get the name of person you are talking to then hang up and call the CRA yourself.” Foreman also advised that the CRA already has most of your personal information on file and would therefore not be requesting it over the telephone. “Another part of this scam has con artists sending emails to individuals saying they are eligible for a tax refund. They claim they have done an audit

The following are tips to protect yourself against victimization by one of these scams provided by Camrose Police Service and Canada Revenue Agency If you have not received written correspondence from the CRA do not comply with requests made by alleged agents over the telephone or by email. If it doesn’t make sense check it out thoroughly. At all costs avoid giving out personal information over the telephone or through an email. Always call and verify on a trusted number, not the number provided by the caller who alleges to be an agent. Question anything or anybody that seems out of the ordinary. Always verify facts by asking the caller to provide you with specifics such as your address or last year’s income, however do not provide the information to them. Lastly, spread the word to others about these scams. The more people who are made aware, the less chance of people being victimized. “We have people that have been victimized of several thousand dollars and some in access of $10,000,” said Foreman. “For some people that is their life savings.” Anyone who has been a victim of deceptive telemarketing is encouraged to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online, or call 1-888495-8501. If you suspect you may be the victim of fraud or have been tricked into giving personal or financial information, contact the Camrose Police Service at 780-672-4444 or RCMP at 780-672-3342.

Handrails installed at EnCana Arena By Lori Larsen

City of Camrose responded to concerns from citizens about the steepness of the stairs at the EnCana Arena by hiring a local welding firm to design a railing that will attach to the aisle seat arm providing patrons with something to hang onto as they ascend or descend the stairs. “Our main priority is the safety of our patrons,” said recreation facilities operations supervisor Jim Cook. “We will be installing 64 hand rails over the summer months on four separate stair aisles.

Over a period of time, it is our intent to have these installed throughout the EnCana Arena.” The railing is designed and constructed in such a way that it can be moved to other areas should the need arise. The city encourages feedback from patrons over the upcoming hockey season to determine whether or not to install more hand railings in the off season of 2017 or sooner. For more information contact Jim Cook at email jcook@camrose.ca or by telephoning 780-672-9195.

Donate to Clothesline Program using bins

Submitted

The Clothesline Program has placed new drop off bins for collecting donations throughout Camrose. The program has been operating across Canada since 1985. Each year, more than 46 million kilograms of clothing, household and electronic items are diverted from Canadian landfills. In addition, the Clothesline collection saves 840 million kWh of energy and reduces our donors’ carbon footprint by 115 million kilograms of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to saving 8.2 million trees each year. Items suitable for donation include reusable clothing, footwear, bedding, linens, drapery and of any size and style. The Clothesline drop boxes can be found at Wild Rose Co-op at 4818-51 Street, former Sobeys location at 4820-66 Street, Superstore at 7005-48 Avenue, Walmart at 6800-48 Avenue, and goods can be donated 24 hours a day, seven days a week for your convenience. All of the net proceeds from donations support the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) and diabetes research, education, programs and advocacy. Over the last 40 years, the CDA has funded $130 million in world-leading Canadian research that has contributed to the development of new treatments and devices, ways to prevent Type 2 diabetes and search for a cure. For more information phone 1-800-505-5525 or visit diabetes.ca/clothesline.

Local residents put behind bars to raise money for two very worthy causes By Lori Larsen

It is fast approaching that time of year again where residents have an opportunity to see some of their bosses, local celebrities, colleagues, family members or friends put behind bars. The third annual Jail and Bail Outlaw Roundup will be held on July 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at ATB Financial Camrose. “There will be an old fashioned courtroom where our Outlaws will be rounded up and arrested by Constable Kelly Bauer and brought back to the branch,” said Camrose ATB assistant branch manager Stacey Siminick-Lecomte. “They will stand trial for their crimes and try to make their bail in the form of your generous pledges.” This year all proceeds raised during the Jail and Bail event will be donated to Camrose Open Door and Courtland’s Hope Foundation. “This year we are thrilled to have teamed up with the Camrose Open Door and Courtland’s Hope Foundation for the third annual Jail and Bail Outlaw Roundup,” said Siminick-Lecomte. This year’s list of outlaws includes some of Camrose’s most wanted such as Brad and Don Forestier from Royal LePage, Matt Hunter from Camrose Kodiaks, Trevor Vinet and team from ReMax, Shawn MacKinnon from 5 Star Home Solutions, Ashley Morton from Premier Event Management, Heather D’Eschambeault from The Brick, David Drever from D&D Sales, City councillor Bill Sears, Jordan Leden from Bailey Buckaroos, and Deputy Fire Chief Joe Mah. The Camrose Open Door is a not-for-profit organization that exists to meet the needs of youth at risk, ages 11 to 24 from Camrose and area. Courtland’s Hope is a Camrose-based not-for-profit foundation committed to providing medical equipment to children with disabilities in order to enrich the child’s life and assist the families that may otherwise not be able to afford such expensive equipment. Over the last four years ATB Financial has locally been a sponsor of the Big Valley Jamboree. As well the Camrose

branch helped raise and donate over $145,000 to support community programs including: Camrose Neighbor Aid Centre, Sparling School Christmas Dinner, Christmas Adopt-aFamily, Toques and Mitts Program, Open Door, Centra Cam, Boys and Girls Club, Kodiaks Game Day, Camrose Women’s Shelter, Teddy 4 a Toonie, Tour of Alberta, Camrose 4-H, and Canadian Bull Congress. ATB Financial has been supporting community based charities and initiatives in Alberta for over 75 years. In 2015 alone, that meant thousands of volunteer hours and $4.4 million given back to Alberta, through donations and fundraising. “This year with your support and donations to the Outlaw Round Up – our goal is to help raise over $20,000 for the Camrose Open Door and Courtland’s Hope,” said Siminick-Lecomte. ATB encourages residents to come out to the Jail and Bail Outlaw Roundup event and enjoy an afternoon filled with fun and food. There will be a barbecue and entertainment provided by Kaleigh Jo Kirk, songwriter from Cochrane, and the grand prize winner of last year’s ATB Financial Homegrown Talent Competition. For more information contact Stacey Siminick-Lecomte at Camrose ATB Financial, telephone 780-679-5295.

Lia Taha Cheng, CIS manager of sport and international programs, will serve as assistant chef de mission at both events. “I am truly honoured and humbled to be selected as Canada’s Chef de Mission for the 29th Summer Universiade,” Cates said. Cates returns as chef de mission for his second consecutive games, after leading Canada at the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain. Grossman also possesses previous Universiade experience, having served on the communications staff for four consecutive Games – including three as sports information officer – from 2005 to 2011. Cates took over as head of RMC’s fitness, sports and recreation programs in 2004, following a six-year stint with the University of Ottawa sports services. Over

the past decade, he has been a member of numerous committees of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and CIS. Black and Blue logo contest

By Lori Larsen One lucky Camrose or area artist may very well have the chance to see his/her own creation displayed on Camrose Minor Hockey helmets and University of Alberta, Augustana campus athletic team jerseys and win a prize package valued at $100. The Family Violence Action Society, Camrose and District invites residents of Camrose and area to participate in a contest to design the logo for the Camrose Minor Hockey and University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings, 2016/2017 Black and Blue campaign. “We are looking for a local Camrose artist of any age to create something unique,” said program coordinator for Milestones in Mental Health and Wellness, Carley Horkoff “We want it to stand out and represent the theme, which is promoting respect and culture of zero tolerance for abusive behavior in sport.” The Logo design must contain the brand Respect is a POWER Play and should be applicable to any sport. The Black and Blue Campaign’s mandate is to raise awareness of abusive language and behavior of spectators, coaches and players particularly directed at young officials and youth involved in sports. “We believe organized sports are important in shaping lifelong attitudes and behaviors of children and youth,” said Family Violence Action Society, Camrose and District program director Sheralyn Dobos. “A positive, supportive culture within sport is beneficial for all young participants, but especially so for those who have challenges at home or at school.” Dobos quoted statistics stating that between one and four children in every classroom in Alberta has witnessed violence at home between their parents. Between four and six children in every classroom are bullying and/or are being bullied.” At specified times during the past two hockey seasons, referees with the Camrose Minor Hockey Association participated in replacing the traditional black and red officials’ armbands with a black and blue armbands to draw awareness to the Black and Blue Campaign. As well a banner was displayed in the arena with a call to action, Keep your own attitude positive and remind other spectators to do so as well. Fliers were distributed to parents and spectators to reinforce the message Respect is a Power Play. University of Alberta, Augustana Campus director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Greg Ryan sup-

Did you know?

It’s coming. Douglas Nyback

Actor Douglas Nyback is currently enjoying a role in a new exciting television series that will begin airing in the fall. The former Camrose area resident plays Roger Caplan in a CBS science drama called Incorporated that is produced by Hollywood heavyweights Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. “I can’t say much about it because is hasn’t been released yet,â€? said Nyback, who has had a number of important roles over the last seven years. “It is about the future in a post climate change world. It is about segregation between the poor and the rich.â€? He is excited for the opportunity. “It is such an honour to work with this incredible cast and crew. To have them put their weight and support behind me as we collaborate. It is so wonderful.â€? He also recently played Private James Goodwin in AMC’s Hell on Wheels in the episode “Two Soldiersâ€? that aired in June. â€œIt was a really cool show to be on and it was fun to shoot in Calgary, so close to home,â€? said Nyback. “I was very excited to be a part of the last season of the show and it I was grateful to play a pivotal part in the Swede’s story line. I had worked with the director (Michael Nankin) on Defiance, so getting another chance to work with him was really cool. Of course, growing up in Alberta, I’ve always wanted to do a western. I usually play characters in the future, so it was fun to play someone in the 1800s.â€? He played Sgt. Frei Poole/Ben in 15 episodes of Defiance through it’s three season run and was also featured on Murdoch Mysteries. In 2014, Nyback did a two-episode arc of the CW hit Reign about Mary Queen of Scots called “Terror of the Faithfulâ€? and “Blood for Bloodâ€?. “I got to play a Protestant minister in a time when they were labeled heretics. It was a crazy episode for me, I got tortured, it was very physically and emotionally challenging. It was fun to be in a historical drama like that. It’s filmed at the same sound stage as Incorporated (Toronto), so it’s interesting that side by side you’ve got 1500s France and a science fiction show.â€? Reign features Cana-

dian iconic actress Megan Follows, who is remembered by everyone across the country as Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables. “Megan is so inspiring and good. In her role (queen mother and regent) she is so terrifying. I had to do a couple of scenes where she is staring me down. She is so professional and yes, a Canadian icon, shared Nyback. “I was so lucky to share the screen with her. Nyback’s first major role was as Billy in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. Nyback is the co-owner of Monolith Pictures in New York and Toronto which recently released it’s biggest feature film to date, Peter Cousin’s Freedom. He’s a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, is an award winning screenwriter and also serves as an acting coach. He has four optioned feature film screenplays in various stages of development, including the award winning Not Quite November (Laurel Award, Canada International Film Festival, 2010), the dark comedy Falling Forward and most recently, a hardhitting drama Innocence and the horror film Ascension (co-written with Michael Goodin). His short films As The Leaves Fall and Coming Around have won numerous awards at various film festivals across the United States. “I feel a lot of momentum right now and I think Incorporated is going to be a big show. The quality is there. It’s been a slow and steady build and I really look forward to what the next chapter in my career will be, he added. His film and television credits include HBO’s Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Jim Sheridan’s Dream House, Aaron Poole’s Conspiracy, SyFy’s Defiance, Haven, Warehouse 13, CW’s Reign, Murdoch Mysteries, NBC’s The Firm, Copper and many more. “I grew up in Camrose, Laura and Ken Nyback are my parents, and I was very involved in the local theatre scene. I moved to New York to study acting and during that time Berdie Fowler was a big supporter of mine. I have a heartfelt thank you for that support and for Camrose for helping me get started, said Nyback. Continued on page 17

“I always visit the same teachers; Tom Spila (band), Charlene Brown (voice), Caroline Simonson (English) and Dave McDougall (drama) when I go back. There is no way I would be doing what I am without them. I also lucked out by having such a talented group of community actors that both challenged and encouraged me,” said Nyback about groups like the Churchmice Players. “Things like the music festival shaped me for the future.” Nyback graduated from the Camrose Composite

High school at around 18 years old and 20 hours later was living in New York. “A couple of days later I started school. It was a huge jump. I threw myself into studies. In 2005, I moved to Toronto and focused on film and television.” He encourages students

to get involved with the arts. “If I was to pass advice to anyone in Camrose, it would be that you can do anything you put your mind to, just don’t give up. It is a long hard journey, but if you want to make a career out of acting, it can be done,” said Nyback.

SENIOR DANCERS

Submitted A Camrose Academy of Dance preschool community senior performance was held on May 15 with approximately 49 dancers performed at Sunrise Village and RoseAlta Lodge. The dancers, from three to five years old, entertained residents and staff with their performance. Preschool dancers are taught by Frances Snowdon and Hailey Rootseart. This event received help from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. The performance at Sunrise Village was called Your Lips Are Movin with the four-year-old class.

Try as I might, I have a tough time keeping my neurotic side at bay since having children (okay, I guess I can’t blame the children, it was probably always there, but it’s more obvious now). It started with the birth of my daughter seven years ago. My sister-in-law helped me create clay footprints as a keepsake, holding my sleeping daughter while I pushed her perfect feet into the soft clay. I didn’t think the imprints were quite right, so we did it again. Then again, to get it just right. Then I realized that I only needed to make one more, and I could give one to each set of grandparents, so that was what we did. No child needs so many impressions of their young feet, but I was hormonal so nobody argued with me. We just wrapped up what I refer to as “birthday season” in our household, with all three children having spring or summer birthdays. Let’s say I tend to go over the top with birthdays. I make homemade invitations; I make a year-in-review poster with pictures; I pore over the Internet for ideas of different activities; I have a theme with coordinating colours; I prefer birthday cakes that are three dimensional and candy laden. I didn’t mean for this to happen; each time I plan a party it seems to morph into something larger and louder than I intended. For my daughter’s first birthday, I made a ladybug cake with mini Oreos as black dots and licorice antennae. My mother and I worked and worked at making the icing red, and ended up making copious amounts of it which we froze (discovering much later of course that it’s possible to buy colour tints for icing). Months later, my Dad looked in the freezer and said, “What’s with all of this pink icing?” and my mom and I both shouted, from different parts of the house, “It’s not pink, it’s red!” I videotaped us singing Happy Birthday to her and then felt like I hadn’t really been watching her with the cake, so I asked if we could sing it again so I could watch this time. Again, no one argued with me about a second rendition. This year, I mentioned to my sister-in-law that I was going to keep it simple for birthday parties. She laughed. Out loud. In my face. Was this such an unbelievable statement? Yes, yes, it was. She knew me too well. A few days later, I started daydreaming about how to create a water balloon catapult for my son’s knights and dragon party. Keeping it simple, right? For my two-year-old’s party, I fashioned shark fins out of blue foam, hot glue and pins so that each partygoer could have a shark fin attached upon arrival, and could then create their own shark hats, play in blue playdough, blue flubber and cooked blue spaghetti. Keeping it simple, right? Then for my daughter’s science experiment party, we created lava lamps, mini volcanoes in Mason jars, swirling milk colours and Diet Coke and mint Mentos geysers (shouldn’t both of these products come with warnings about what happens when combined with the other?). I went from store to store looking for dry ice. And six per cent hydrogen peroxide. I was imagining a steaming volcano cake and foaming creations. Keeping it simple, right? I suggested to my daughter that as part of the festivities, we should spend an hour gazing in admiration at the cake. We could ponder how it was formed, marvel at the colours and decorations. Then when it was time to dig in, we would take very slow bites. Like maybe every five minutes or so, in order to savour the four-hour creation just a little bit more. She has already perfected the “my mother has completely lost it” look, and that is what I received. My husband proclaimed that back in the day, the theme of a party was: birthday. You ate pizza, ran around outside without any structured activity, maybe had a balloon or two put up in your honour, ate a cupcake and opened a few presents. He read up about the explosion of birthday “themes” and the stress that it can cause parents. And truthfully, maybe simpler birthday bashes were more fun for the children. Today’s kids are over scheduled, indoor creatures. At our nature party last year, we had a scavenger hunt on the way over to a pond where we caught and watched tadpoles and water striders. Then we fed chickadees from our hands in the woods, and made our way back to my house. One six-year-old guest then spotted our playhouse and swing set and asked if they could now have “free time”. Enough with the fun planned activities already! Set us free! Maybe next year, kids…maybe next year.

Jeep Cherokee Easily handles your off-road needs By Murray Green

Camrose Chrysler sales associate Chris MacIntyre is excited to be back in the city and invites everyone to stop in and say hello. The 2016 Jeep Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler offers exciting adventures and endless possibilities. “The Cherokee Trail Hawk (Mango Tango Pearl colour) in the showroom with its factory lift and more aggressive tires is more than capable of handling your off-road adventures,” said MacIntyre. Cherokee’s 2.3 litre Tigershark MultiAir I-4 engine achieves fuel economy of 7.7 litres per 100 km highway and arrives as standard issue. From its fully isolated aluminum head cover with an integrated oil separation system, to its high pressure die-cast aluminum block, the Tigershark engine was engineered to deliver a quiet and refined ride. The 3.2 litre Pentastar Variable Valve Timing (VVT) V6 engine with stop/ start technology is a workhorse that was designed for those who require efficiency combined with extra muscle. Demanding drivers will appreciate its 271 horsepower, 239 lb.-ft. of torque, and fuel efficiency as impressive as 8.1 litres per 100 km highway. Economies are further enhanced with engine Stop/Start technology that automatically shuts off the engine as the vehicle comes to a stop, then seamlessly restarts it when the brake pedal is released. “Jeep Cherokee’s class exclusive nine speed automatic transmission is all about driving comfort, refinement and efficiency,” added MacIntyre. “Shift modes are determined by intelligent software that monitors engine torque, as well as kickdown, acceleration and road grade changes.” Jeep Cherokee offers class-leading capability with your choice of three 4x4 systems. tion in and out of 4WD at any speed. Equipped with a rear-axle disconnect, you can go from four-wheel drive to two-wheel drive and back again seamlessly, without driver input. This results in reduced energy loss when 4WD capability is needed – improving fuel efficiency. It all comes together to deliver a consistent boost in all weather capability. Jeep Active Drive II is a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU) offering torque management and 4-Low mode. This locks the front and rear driveshafts to deliver additional power at low speeds, or for towing your toys. A driveline neutral switch enables you to hitch

Cherokee to your RV and take it along for the ride. Additionally, offroad capability is enhanced with a 2.5 cm increase in ride height and an incredible crawl ratio of 56:1 when paired with the 2.4 litre Tigershark, and a ratio of 48:1 when paired with the 3.2 litre Pentastar. “The Trail Rated Jeep Active Lock includes everything in Jeep Active Drive II plus a locking rear differential that allows the wheels with the most traction to get

100 per cent of the system’s torque. For those who face severe weather or off-road conditions, Jeep Active Drive Lock will help Cherokee grab onto the ground and keep going, powered with even more capability and strength,” said MacIntyre. Every 4x4 Cherokee is equipped with Jeep SelecTerrain Management System, giving you the power to tackle Mother Nature’s toughest conditions. You’ll have up to five settings that

deliver ultimate driving stability by coordinating 12 vehicle systems, including throttle control, transmission shifting, transfer case, traction control and Electronic Stability Control. Choose from up to five sure-footed modes: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/ Mud and Rock. You can drive the 2016 Jeep Cherokee when you visit Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East. A county resident received a phone call from a male claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency. The male convinced him to purchase $3,800 of iTunes gift cards. This is a very common scam occurring in and around the Camrose area. Be aware and do not provide these callers with any information. Camrose RCMP assisted the Wetaskiwin Detachment in apprehending two individuals responsible for files of Breaking and Entering. Two stolen trucks were in their possession and were recovered. Police and Camrose EMS responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 21. A brief period of heavy downpour contributed to poor visibility, resulting in one vehicle driving into the oncoming lane causing a head-on collision. All parties were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.

SOCCER RACE

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose player Rachel Ware of the U16 squad outruns an Athabasca defender and races towards the net. Camrose won the game 2-0 and won their placement game 3-2 in a shootout to finish in fifth place at provincials hosted by Camrose, July 8 to 10.

The Camrose Vikings U18 girls soccer team earned silver medals at provincials in Ponoka on July 8 to 10. Camrose defeated Breton 5-1 in the first game with Shavonne Voytechek scoring all five unanswered goals. “I was in the right place at the right time with great passes by teammates to allow me to score those goals,” she said. Camrose went on to play Sherwood Park winning 4-1 to put the team into the semi-finals against Edson, which ended in a shoot out. “We had to go through 12 players before taking the win 5-4,” said coach Weston Voytechek. “It was a very strong game for us. It was fun to watch and intense and then followed with the shoot out. Both teams had strong shooters scoring 10 out of 12 shots for us, ending with our keeper Kamryn Leavitt putting it in for the win.” Camrose faced Ponoka in the gold match coming up short in the final. “We had a

great year with a lot of solid games. We won silver in the Ice Breaker tournament in the spring, followed by a silver in the Night Classic tournament, third in a tight league and then silver in provincials. It is a great accomplishment,” said assistant coach Micheyl Voytechek. Most of the team consisted of first year players in the age group and included some younger players. “I had the privilege of working with the keepers over the season. I played my minor soccer in Camrose under coach Voytechek, so it was cool to be on the other side of the fence and to be able to give back. That was rewarding in itself. I felt good about working with this team and to accomplish what we did for my first year back in outdoor soccer as a coach is what I call amazing and rewarding. These were a great bunch of girls to work with,” stated keeper coach Mark Reinhart.

“Providing meaningful tributes for those who have lived, been loved and passed on”

In loving memory of

Dorothy Rose Keller

In loving memory of

Bartley James Graham 1975 ~ 1995 Broken is the family circle; Our dear one is passed away. Passed from earth and   earthly darkness Into bright and perfect day. But we all must cease to  languish O’er the grave of him we love; Strive to be prepared   to meet him In the better world above. Remembered and sadly missed, Mom and Dad Bryan, Tracy and family Roxy, James and family

who passed away on July 22, 2015 Little did we know that  morning God was going to call   your name. In life, we loved you dearly, In death, we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, Your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, You are always by our side. Our family chain is broken And nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Loved and missed forever, Your loving family

In loving memory of

Dorothy Rose Keller In loving memory of my Dad

Sonke Matzen who passed away on July 23, 1998 Dad, you gave me many things   in life Gifts both great and small, But most of all,   you gave me love, Always the greatest gift of all. A life that touches the heart of others lives on forever. Always loved and remembered by Hazel

who passed away on July 22, 2015 Keep her, Jesus, in Thy keeping Until I reach that golden shore. Then, dear Saviour, let me   have her And love her as I did before. Love forever, Wilf

Dr. Suna Anne Smith April 23, 1936 ~ July 8, 2016 Suna Anne Smith, neé Bulgun, was born on April 23, 1936 to Kamer Ökmen and Riza Bulgun in Izmir, Turkey. During a time of progressive Islam, Suna’s mother Kamer worked as a bank manager and Suna was afforded the privilege of being educated to the highest level. As a youth, her interests included her studies, mandolin and tennis; and she eventually chose medicine as her career – entering medical school at the University of Ankara in Turkey. Upon graduating from medical school, she was offered a residency position at McGill University in Montreal where she began her training in psychiatry. Her studies eventually brought her to the University of Alberta in Edmonton where she met her soon-to-be husband, Alan Gerald Smith, who was completing his residency training in surgery. They fell in love and were married in Camrose at St. Francis Xavier Church on July 7, 1962. Suna and Alan recently celebrated the 54th anniversary of their marriage. Suna gave birth to three children and is survived by her husband Alan; her three children Jacqueline, Michael and Thomas; seven grandchildren Katarina, Tamara, Catalina, Brooke and Brandon, Kiana and Thomas. Her first great-grandchild, Charlotte Sophia, was born on April 10, 2016. Suna had the pleasure of meeting baby Charlotte for the first time just hours before she passed and enjoyed singing, dancing and remembering all of her children and grandchildren as babies. She came to our Lord Jesus Christ through her close relationship with the Sisters of Providence and Father Bonner. Suna lived as fiercely as she loved, travelling to all corners of the globe, hiking remote mountains and rain forests, sailing distant oceans and seas, and walking the most exotic of beaches. She often told us that at the end of her life, she hoped to be able to say that she had drank a hell of a lot of champagne – as she truly valued the importance of celebration. A Prayer Vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2016 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Jacobson officiating. At the conclusion of the service, interment took place at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your charity of choice in memoriam. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

In loving memory of

Morris Reum who passed away on July 18, 2015 He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went on quietly working For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there…a firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad One of our greatest blessings The man that we called Dad. Forever in our hearts, Tammy, Preston, Perry, Tanya and families

In loving memory of

Allen Johan Severson Allen Johan Severson was born on July 25, 1927 to Theodore and Mary Severson on the home farm north of Sedgewick, Alberta. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethania Lutheran Church, north of Sedgewick. From grades 1 to 11, he attended local schools and graduated from Camrose Lutheran College in 1946. In the fall of 1946, Allen began studies at Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute (CLBI) in Camrose, followed by enrolment at Luther Seminary in the fall of 1947. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatoon in 1951 and a Bachelor of Divinity from Luther Seminary in 1952. Allen was ordained in 1952 and answered a call to the parish in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan where he served until 1956. From 1956 to 1958, Allen was Dean of the Bible Department at Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute (LCBI) in Outlook, Saskatchewan. Here he met and then married his beloved, Mary Sundby of Stewart Valley, Saskatchewan in 1957. In 1958, Allen received a call from Dunbar Lutheran Church, Vancouver, BC, where he was pastor until 1963 when the family moved to serve in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. In 1967, Allen and family moved to Alberta, this time to a four-point parish that included congregations in Edberg, New Norway, Donalda and Bethany (rural Donalda). In 1973, Allen was called to be the chaplain at Bethany Homes and Hospital in Camrose where he served until 1989 when a series of heart attacks made it necessary to take early retirement. Allen was a devoted member of Messiah Lutheran Church and served on various church boards and committees. Allen was also an avid sports fan and served as statistician and sports writer for the Camrose Lutheran College Vikings hockey team and also was an organizer on the Viking Cup Committee. In his retirement years, he volunteered in the kitchen at CLBI and maintained his love of preaching in a part-time role in congregations throughout central Alberta. Allen was recognized for his community service in 2002 when he received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal. Allen is survived by his two sons Marvin (Christine) of Edmonton and Truman (Kim) of Sherwood Park; one daughter Carol (Brent) of Whistler, BC; grandchildren Meryn, Benjamin, Emily and Thaya; brother-in-law Erland Sundby and sister-in-law Sylvia Sundby; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Mary; his daughter Marion; brother Lester (Gladys); sisters Minnie (Nels) Djos and Thelma (Otto) Sorenson; brother-in-law Gene Sundby; and sister-in-law Ruby Sundby. A prayer service will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose. Interment will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Lakeview Cemetery, Edberg, Alberta. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose with Rev. Calvin Skriver officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Suggestions include Camp Kuriakos, CLBI or the Alberta Cancer Society.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. This year’s UDF program begins July 18, 2016, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for two to three months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regard to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Vincent Choy at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at (780)672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.com.

Kingman Rink of Dreams coming true By Lori Larsen The Kingman Rink of Dreams really is a testament to the fact that dreams can come true, especially with the support of generous donations from organizations, businesses and individuals. “We are very close to our funding goal for the Rink of Dreams campaign,” said Kingman Recreation Association member Trent Kenyon. Most recently the rink initiative has received donations from Richardson Pioneer Camrose for $10,000, Wildrose Co-op for $4000, Fountain Tire Camrose for $4500, Napa for $4000, Tim Hortons for $4000, and Round Hill Elks $2500. The Rink of Dreams also received a $35,000 grant from the Makadiff Sports, a province wide not-for-profit

organization with a mission to support innovative growth and development of amateur sport. Every year the organization selects five community projects that are delivering sports to members of the community in a new and positive way. The Kingman Rink of Dreams, with its mandate to offer free access to the rink to anyone at any time and encourage children or adults to just come out and skate, fell right into the Makadiff Sports criteria. The Kingman Recreation Association is asking for volunteers during the week of July 25 to 29 to come and assist with the construction of the rink. For more information contact Trent Kenyon at 780679- 7903.
