REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson The sound of silence I popped my head out of the water. Everything was quiet. One of my summer adventures is taking adult swim lessons. As a child, I took lessons in the olden-days outdoor pool at the south end of Main Street Camrose. I never became good at swimming and never liked putting my head under water. During my pre-beginner adult swim lessons this summer, the initial focus was learning to be comfortable in water. In Lesson Two, we were learning to put our heads under the water. I knew this is what I came for. It was also what I dreaded most. I’d finally been able to float on my back and let my head go back far enough so that the water was over my ears. I really didn’t like that feeling, but I did it. I couldn’t quite make myself put my face in the water while floating on my front, but I was willing to put my mouth underwater. Finally I did it – just dunked my entire head under water. More than once, even. (Small moment of personal pride – mixed with how much I didn’t like the feeling.) That’s when I popped my head above water and everything was quiet. My ears were full of water and I couldn’t hear. *** Oddly enough, my first sensation was relief. Swimming pools are noisy. High ceilings, hard surfaces, people shouting. I loved that the noise had gone away. My second sensation was the weirdness of feeling my ears plugged. I was in a cocoon of silence. *** I’ve had plugged ears before. Every other time there was a specific moment when I could hear loudly again. Pop, and my hearing was back. Not this time. A day went by and then another day. Following the swimming instructor’s suggestion, I tipped my head to each side so the water would run out of my ears. It didn’t. A visit to a medical clinic resulted in a recommendation for ear drops, which I used. I kept popping my ears. There was never a “pop” to have my hearing return. It was just a gradual improvement until one day I realized my hearing seemed back to normal. In the meantime, I was amazed at how much relief it was to be cocooned in semi-silence. Traffic sounds, people noises, equipment, TV – the silence was a relief. I had no idea how much the everyday noise of urban life was affecting me. On the other hand, some days I spend several hours on the phone in conference calls or long-distance business conversations. Voices sounded faint and far away, and I knew I was not hearing everything clearly – a definite disadvantage! Yes, some miscommunication happened. *** A few months ago I heard people talk of the impact of losing their hearing. One woman estimated she missed about one-third of what people said to her, and described how it interfered with every aspect of her life. We had instructions about how to make it easier for people with hearing loss to hear us. Face them when speaking with them. Project our voices. Enunciate, not just so they can hear better, but so they can see the shape of our moving lips. My voice does not project well. I felt like I was shouting, but to them it sounded ordinary volume. I found myself getting impatient. *** Three takeaways now that my hearing is back: 1. I’m going to be a lot more patient with people who are hard of hearing. 2. I’m more aware than I was of the relentless toll of background noise. Those of us who spend time in noisy work or home environments probably use more energy than we know fending off the background noise while trying to hear specific voices or other sounds within that noise. 3. I’m much more appreciative of the gift of hearing – not just the ability to hear sounds (especially music and the voices of people I treasure) – but of the powerful impact hearing has on our ability to connect with fellow human beings. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

It seems a strange pity that such an iconic feature of our city would, at significant cost to the taxpayers, so nonchalantly be destroyed. Certainly there need not be a great rush to do so and all could be given another year to consider this possibility. Especially since there is a group prepared to do fundraising and whatever it takes to maintain the structure, at no cost to the city. Could they not be sold a small parcel of land for parking and access from the south, where there is already a street less than a block away? Such a sale would remove from the City any further costs for the site, and any other responsibilities and liabilities. If a few people in the area happen to not like the looks of the thing, certainly when they moved nearby it already existed and if they really don’t like to see it there are plenty of places to live in the city where it can’t be seen. Douglas Hendrickson, Bittern Lake
Opposing rezoning
I write this publication in regards to the proposed rezoning of our mature, homey, quiet, lakeside neighbourhood on 54 Street. The condo proposed could be as high as 75 feet and as close as nine feet from the side of my house right in the middle of our block. We have many concerns including traffic, parking, crowding, shading, noise, loss of privacy and loss of property value. After having talked with several councillors I learned that there is no Area Redevelopment Plan or ARP. In mature neighbourhoods like ours ARPs are essential in preventing unpredictable rezoning and creates a development vision going forward. We need a mature neighbourhood overlay which is community supported like the Augustana neighbourhood adopted. This creates a clear vision and takes away the fear and anxiety of what’s coming next. A home is probably the single most important investment people make. The primary purpose of zoning bylaws is to protect property values and to make sure development maintains the form and character of the neighbourhood. Section 641 of the Revised Statutes of Alberta, Chapter M-26 of the Municipal Government Act reads as follows, (6) A land use bylaw may authorize a development authority to decide on an application for a development permit even though the proposed development does not comply with the land use bylaw or is a non-conforming building, if in
the opinion of the development authority, (a) the proposed development would not (i) unduly interfere with the amenities of the neighbourhood (ii) or materially interfere with or affect the use, enjoyment, or value of neighbourhood parcel of land, and (b) the proposed development conforms with the land use bylaw. Clearly this rezoning would violate Section 641. Some members of council have stated that we need the density downtown. If this is the case there are three lots right downtown which would be perfect including north of Wild Rose Co-op store, south of the RBC Royal Bank and across the street from Francoeur Cleaners. None of these would cause any hardships to the neighbourhoods. On Tuesday, Aug. 2, the proposed rezoning will come before council for the third reading time at 5 p.m. at City Hall. The last two times it received overwhelming opposition. I ask any concerned citizens to attend this meeting and help us stop this rezoning and ask council to consider an ARP. If you cannot attend write or email your concerns to council. Remember this could happen to your neighbourhood. Barry Green and Linda Rolleston, Camrose

Developer addresses concerns of rezoning By Lori Larsen
After concerns were brought forward at a public hearing held April 18 by residents over the type of possible structure planned for Lots 15 and 16, Block 23 Plan 5190HW, city council deferred decisions on the redistricting of the lots until the first regular council meeting in August, requesting clarifications on the development from the developer as well as administration. During the Committee of Whole meeting on July 18, Jamie Affleck and Andrey Sokolov of Alair Homes, representing Fieldstone Developments, made a presentation to council regarding the specifics of the proposed development and addressed concerns brought forward by residents. “We were engaged by Fieldstone primarily to help them with the design of this development, as well as represent them through the rezoning process,” began Affleck. In the beginning of the presentation Affleck demonstrated visual renderings of the proposed building and described for council what the interest regarding the request for rezoning of the two lots located at 4825 and 4823-54 Street. Making reference to the City of Camrose’s Municipal Development Plan and the five pillars of sustainability, Affleck said how the proposed building and development related to the plan. “Reducing Camrose’s ecological footprint was high on the priority list, along with encouraging infill and higher density development.
“Incorporating and establishing green building practices was mentioned in a couple of different areas and reducing water consumption per capita was important. “Emphasizing pedestrian and bicycle pathways was critical to you as well as developing a business strategy that would support the existing businesses and encourage the flourish there as well as relocation of new businesses.” Affleck explained that the proposed development, in his opinion would meet the requirements of the City’s development plan. Addressing concerns
In addressing some main concerns voiced by neighboring residents regarding shadowing, parking, traffic and property values Affleck explained: “In designing the north face of the building we have minimized the vertical surface of the north setback there. “It is actually the slim part of the building that is actually three or three and a half stories tall. The rest of it is really two at the max and on the other side it is all decks. “The way that we designed the fourth floor also drastically reduces the amount of shading that would be on the north side or any other perspective for that matter.” Affleck also indicated the development would incorporate the slope of the hill to reduce shading and that the setback on the north side of the building would be three times more than what is required. With regards to the park-
ing concerns, Affleck told council the development will include 33 parking spots, eight of which will be located on the outside of the building with the rest contained in an underground parkade. “We want to take pressure away from the parking on 54 Street and surrounding neighbourhoods,” he said. In addressing the concern about decreasing property values Affleck referred to two examples. “We have included two references - one out of Denver and one out of Toronto combating this assumption. In fact the reverse is true. When you have a building like this come into a community not only does it maintain value of properties around it, but it also increases value and we’ve even seen some experience of that in recent real estate sales here in Camrose regarding the north side of tall buildings.” Building specs
Affleck summarized the overall concept of the proposed building and development. “We would be looking at an underground concrete parkade. “The top four floors would be wood construction, there would be a total of 18 units in the building with a common room. “The square footage of these units is going to range from about 1,100 to 1,500 or 1,600 square feet.” Affleck said offering a range of square footages would provide different affordability options and encourage a vari-
ety of demographics of residents. “There will be one elevator in the building and 800 square feet of amenity space. Affleck described the amenity space to be spaces inside the building such as a common room and deck contained on the fourth floor, foyer or lounge area as well as some public greenspace around the exterior of the building such as communal gardens or flowerbeds. The benefits
Along with concerns, Affleck wanted to relate to council what they deem to be some of the benefits of the proposed development. “We also have to look at the opportunities and benefits of a building like this. “The top of the list is livability. When we have the opportunity to create a high quality building it attracts high quality people and this promotes a safe, clean community because they have a vested interest in their building, in keeping it safe and a vested interest in their community as it pertains to the outside of their building.” Affleck indicated that potential residents for this building would be those desiring to have close access to the downtown retail core, trail systems around Mirror Lake that encourage an active lifestyle and access to the arts and cultural community offered in the downtown area. In conclusion Affleck remarked. “How do we make this area flourish? We make sure we have higher density that provides built-in clientele for these types of retail stores and encourage
people to be there, not just during the day or not just during the night, but at a variety of times and if you can encourage this it creates a very safe clean, environment.” Affleck encouraged council members to request landscaping plans, environment assessment, traffic impact analysis, shadow reports and noise studies specific to the proposed development as well as a review of the threedimensional rendering. Councillor Max Lindstrand inquired about the feasibility of building a three floor, 15 unit building. Affleck replied, “We tried to find a happy medium to fit in the community, specifically to the homes that are there and to the R4 across the street making it fit into the topographical landscaping. By having it on a hill there is a way to minimize the overall height.” When asked about the height of the building Affleck responded that the exact height was not available at this time but it would be well under the allotted 75 feet and likely closer to 45 feet. Mayor Norm Mayer requested Affleck to put together and provide council with a shadowing analysis and the proposed height of their building. During the April 18 regular council meeting Bylaw #2839/15 was deferred to the first regular council meeting in August, which is scheduled for Aug. 2.
Railway station hosts a tribute to prairie women of the rail By Lori Larsen
Submitted Photo During last year’s event, Tribute to Pioneer Women held at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park, attendees were treated to some story telling and demonstrations. Duane Riske holds up an intricate cloth item to illustrate the craftsmanship of pioneer women.
Throughout history the struggle of women finding their place and gaining respect in the workforce has been an ongoing topic of conversation. The Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will be presenting a tribute to the hardworking, brave women of the Prairies and Railway. The Women of the Railway event will take place on July 30 at 2 p.m. The main speaker is Colleen Nelsen who worked in the Camrose Railway Station as a relief agent. Other speakers include Glenys Smith who will relate the story of Marian Lillico, a child of the railway in the 30s, whose stepfather was a relief section foreman and Barb MacDonald who will tell the story of Catherine McDonald, one of the first settlers in the 1800s to the Heather Brae District.
During the Second World War many women throughout the world were called upon to take over jobs in the workforce that were typically done by men who were called to serve their countries. Unfortunately, these women were not paid the same wages as the men they replaced and once the men returned the jobs were quickly returned to them. All of these women blazed the trails for women of the future and proved through hardships the invaluable contribution women make to society. The event will be held outdoors among the gardens, weather permitting, and attendees are encouraged to wear a hat or clothing depicting the 1930s. The Station will be serving homemade berry desserts. For more information contact the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park at 780-672-3099.

Camrose will be welcoming friends from Japan on July 26 and 27 to honour and celebrate the ongoing sister city friendship with Kamifurano and celebrate the unveiling of a new permanent display at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. The museum will be hosting a community reception for the Camrose and Japan Friendship Society on Wednesday, July 27 at 1 p.m. “We’ll be unveiling a new permanent display,” said coordinator of the Camrose and District Centennial Museum Janine Carroll. “A few months ago we were asked to incorporate the City of Camrose Kamifurano collection into our collections. It’s comprised of gifts given to the City over the years by this sister city. Also in the collection are gifts from ToyamaChuo-Nogyo High School in Ohyama-Machi, Japan. The collection includes several pieces of exquisite art, woodwork, metalwork, clothing, dolls and fans. “Not all of it is able to fit into the display, which allows us to interchange artifacts to keep it dynamic,” remarked Carroll. The museum invites anyone to come and enjoy cake and refreshments all the while joining in on the celebration of international friendship. The delegation will also be visiting City Hall during their stay and attending a special banquet held in their honour at the Best Western Plus Camrose Casino and Resort on July 27 at 5 p.m.

Submitted photos Brothers David and Fernand Francoeur are seen posing in front of the Francoeur Bros. General Machinery Dealer they started and built as a successful Camrose and Alberta business. David Raymond (D.R.) Francoeur (insert) is this year’s honoree for the Camrose Founders Day Festival. By Lori Larsen
The third Sunday of August marks a special day in the lives of Camrosians as residents celebrate Founders Day, the past and the bold leaders who contributed to making Camrose the thriving community it is today. Camrose Founders Day Festival will take place on Aug. 19 to 21 with a variety of activities aimed at commemorating Camrose’s rich history. The area around Camrose was first settled in the early 1900s. The settlement was incorporated in May of 1905 as Sparling, later named Camrose in 1906. “This year, the Camrose Founders Day Festival Committee is proud to honour David Raymond (D.R.) Francoeur as our 2016 community founder,” said Camrose and District Museum coordinator Janine Carroll. David Raymond Francoeur (1888-1963), known fondly by his family and friends as D.R., was a successful businessman and community leader. In 1911, D.R. moved to Camrose in search of opportunity. In response to the needs of the agricultural community he began the farm implement business known as Francoeur Bros. in partnership with his brother Fernand. The business dealt in general machinery and became the western distributors of Jardin’s Threshing Machines. The business prospered contributing to the growth of Camrose. In his book entitled A Business History of Alberta, Henry Klassen said about
Francoeur Bros., “The new retail firm was to make implements available to farmers and help bring hinterland trade to Camrose. In doing so, Francoeur Bros. would contribute to the town’s growth. As more and more farmers moved into the Camrose region, Francoeur Bros. built a substantial business selling threshing outfits, as well as engines, fanning mills, pumps, windmills and many other items that farmers needed. The machines the firm provided, often through credit sales, were backed by reliable, fast service.” The brothers were recognized by Alberta Venture as one of the top 100 entrepreneurs that helped to build Alberta. In 1920, Francoeur Bros.’ name was changed to Alberta Machinery Company and continued operating within the family for several generations. In celebration of his contributions to not only Camrose but Alberta, the Founders Day Festival will be honouring D.R. Francouer throughout the celebrations. The ceremonies will begin on Friday, Aug. 19 with a promenade at 11:30 a.m. People wishing to join the promenade are asked to meet in front of Candlers Art Gallery where the walk will proceed to the Messiah Lutheran Church of Camrose. Members of the church will be welcoming anyone for tea from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 19. The promenade will then walk down to The Bailey Theatre for the opening ceremonies taking place at 1 p.m. During the opening cer-
emonies, the 2016 Founder David Raymond Francoeur will be honoured. “We will also have speakers representing the federal, provincial and local governments,” said Carroll. On Saturday, Aug. 20, events will take place at both the Camrose and District Centennial Museum and the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park, schedules to be announced. On Saturday at 7 p.m., there will be a graveyard tour at Valleyview Cemetery, 4205-52 Street, guided by John Person as he shares entertaining, albeit informative, stories. The cemetery will be adorned with hundreds of white crosses and flowers in recognition and in memory of past members from the Legion and other local service clubs who have passed away. On Sunday, Aug. 21, a church service will take place at the 1908 St. Dunstan’s Church at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum at 10 a.m. The service will be led by Father Jacques deGuise Vaillancourt of the St. Andrew Anglican Church. The final event for the weekend honours the brave men and women who served in the military to ensure security for our way of life, not only for Camrose, but for our country. Residents are invited to join the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No 57 in the Decoration Day Service held in the Field of Honor at Valleyview Cemetery at 1 p.m. For more information contact the Camrose and District Centennial Museum at 780-672-3298.

Museum meet and greet By Lori Larsen
The Camrose and District Centennial Museum had a Meet and Greet on July 13 to attract a committee of people interested in contributing to a fund development plan. “This could include planning events which raise funds as well as specific fundraisers,” said Camrose and District Centennial Museum coordinator Janine Carroll. “The City of Camrose provides a budget that covers many aspects of the site such as staffing, utilities and grounds upkeep. They maintain the main museum building as well as provide some funding that can be used for other building maintenance. They help keep the place secure and safe.” However, with 13 heritage replica and storage buildings, and over 85,000 community artifacts to maintain, the needs go far beyond the assigned budget. “We recognize that the city doesn’t have endless pockets. As with all museums, even those owned and funded provincially, planning and fund development needs to happen,” said Carroll. Some of the projects currently requiring attention at the museum include; restoration of the interior of the church, an overhaul of the 1912 Steam Engine, repair and maintenance of many of the tractors, indexing and digitizing approximately 600,000 newspaper photo negatives, updating some equipment and buildings, general maintenance of some of the individual artifacts, developing of programs and events to attract visitors to the museum and upgrading signage. “We are currently undertaking the indexing and digitizing of our photograph collection as a summer project,” said Carroll. “While optimistic that we will get a good deal of this project completed by the end of August, we have thousands of photographs. Organizing, indexing, digitizing and making sure they are cared for is all part of this project.” For more information contact Janine Carroll by telephone at 780-672-3298.

Getting poked for a good cause
gatling gun Replica
Gatling gun on loan By Kayden Prevost, Camrose and District Centennial Museum
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Lindsay Cole, acupuncturist and owner of Wildrose Community Acupuncture works on a client in the serene back room during a fundraiser for Courtland’s Hope Foundation held in March. The organization raised $260 for the foundation.
By Lori Larsen The mere thought of having several needles poked into one’s skin during an acupuncture treatment must terrify trypanophibiacs (people who fear needles or injections). However, combining the 3,000-year-old healing technique with a fundraiser, enticed some residents of Camrose to come out and experience it for themselves. Wildrose Community Acupuncture hosted a free acupuncture event on March 28. In lieu of payment donations totaling $260 were collected for Courtland’s Hope Foundation. Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for conditions that include musculoskeletal pain, headaches, allergies, morning sickness, arthritis, post-operative pain, side effects of chemotherapy, and other pains or disorders. “The most common condition we use acupuncture to treat is any kind of pain,” said Lindsay Cole acupuncturist and owner of Wildrose Community Acupuncture. She referred specifically to upper and lower back pain but indicated the treatment is also effective for shoulder, elbow and knee pain, as well as joint conditions. “The second most common (treatment) in acupuncture is specializing in fertil-
ity,” added Cole. “It is very much an appreciated method for couples that are having difficulty with that.” The process involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into different acupuncture points located throughout the body. How the procedure feels varies from person to person. “It can feel like a lot of different things,” remarked Cole. “Sometimes people don’t feel anything. They may not feel the needles going in and may not feel the needles while they are in place.” However for those who do feel something, it is most often compared to the pinch of a mosquito bite. “While the needles are in, the sensation is usually described as an aching, tingling, numbness or warming and those are signs that the needles are working,” explained Cole. As methods of scientific inquiry have progressed, the reasons why acupuncture is effective are beginning to be more clearly understood. “Our best response from a western medical perspective is that it encourages the body to heal itself,” said Cole. “Blood flow has such an important role in the healing response. It brings oxygen and white blood cells to the area which helps in the healing process, like repairing tissue or carrying away aspects that need to get
carried away, such as lactic acid after a heavy workout. “Acupuncture is also well known for influencing neurological response and how the body perceives pain.” Acupuncture has also been proven to have influences on hormonal responses, hunger or cravings and sleep disorders. The premise behind community acupuncture is to make the treatments available to more people by offering a more open concept. “Camrose Community Acupuncture is very focused on trying to make acupuncture more accessible to people,” said Cole. “We have a community room so we are able to reduce the costs because there are multiple people getting treatments at the same time.” Clients at Camrose Community Acupuncture receive treatments in a softly lit room while seated in a reclining chair with tranquil music playing in the background. An environment conducive to a relaxing state of mind, in this case, to clients who not only received a dose of goodness for their body but their hearts as well by making a donation to Courtland’s Hope Foundation. Courtland’s Hope Foundation is a Camrose based charity established to provide assistance in obtaining medical equipment or services for disabled children.
In 2013, Leonard Olson and Don Scabar, of the Hay Lakes community, built a onethird scale model of a Gatling gun. The realistic replica is constructed from scrap brass, melted and crafted into various parts of the Gatling gun. The wood used to make the wheels, axel and tongue came from an oak log that was provided by Dave Holdsworth. Unfortunately, in December of 2013, while the replica was still under construction, Don Scabar died. Mr. Olsen continued with the project. He completed the gun and constructed a stunning glass case in honor of his late friend. The non-functioning Gatling gun replica is now on display at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum, and is a great addition to our main gallery. This replica represents the world’s first successful machine gun, invented in 1862 by American Civil War doctor Richard J. Gatling. Dr. Gatling was tired of seeing soldiers killed and injured. He developed the weapon with the intention of reducing the size of armies resulting in fewer casualties and showing the futility of war.
The gun was first used in battle by Union General Benjamin F. Butler at the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia and became a standard weapon in the US Military. It was utilized when settling the American west and during the Spanish American War in 1898. Imperial European powers used the Gatling gun to expand their colonial empires in Africa and Asia, using this superior weapon. The Russian and Japanese Empire used the Gatling gun when at war against each other in the Russo-Japanese War 190405. In the early 20th century, the Gatling gun was removed from the military and was replaced with newly developed machine guns. But in 1968, during the Vietnam War, the Gatling gun was restructured as the Vulcan 134 mini gun and mounted on each helicopter. The Vulcan mini gun is still used today. The Gatling gun revolutionized modern warfare and contributed to a changing world. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Senior’s Chat
Five ways to stay active in your own retirement community By Christina Rehmann, activities coordinator at Sunrise Village, Camrose
The experts all say when it comes to aging, “Use it or lose it.” At Sunrise Village, we like to suggest use it and have fun while you’re at it. By getting involved and staying active you will have so much richer an experience - you will wonder why you didn’t move in sooner! Here are five easy suggestions that will keep you active and excited to be in your new home; • Read the calendar, newsletter or ask! There is certain to be an activity for every taste, so take a look at what there is to offer. Activity coordinators love suggestions as that is the only sure way that they can meet the wants of all their residents. So if the activities offered just aren’t speaking to you, then a chat with the activities department will quickly remedy that. • Take a chance. Sometimes taking a chance and trying something new can be the beginning of a new passion or at least an enjoyable new pastime. Even retrying an activity that you may have tried previously can surprise you. Maybe not if the activity was something like bull fighting or stock car racing; on the other hand bingo is a riot with the right bunch of people…as is a hula dem-
onstration, book club, exercise class, walking group or floor curling. • Go for a walk. Walking is always a winner. Most seniors’ facilities will have hand rails to keep you steady; if the weather is dreadful you need only hit the hallways. So many communities are making the move to become more walkable with dedicated paths, trails and benches. The City of Camrose is an excellent example of that, even here at the facility level Sunrise has a smooth paved walkway that takes you almost one km in total with many benches along the way. • Listen to music. Tap your toes or dance around the room - listening to your favorite music just makes you feel good. It doesn’t have to be live music but jump at that opportunity if it arises! Visiting with people that share your taste in music is always a wonderful boost. • Stay connected. As simple as making a phone call to a friend, a grandchild or an old acquaintance or as sophisticated ( but easy) as jumping on skype for some face to face visiting with loved ones. Making new friends and new connections is a wonderful way to make your new place feels like a home and it’s as easy as smiling and saying hello to your neighbour.
Always address elder abuse By Lori Larsen
Elder abuse is an action or inaction by self or others taken against an older adult that jeopardizes his or her health or well being and can include financial, emotional, physical, sexual, neglect or medication. “Often times it is family members (abusing) which is a whole different dynamic,” explained Elder Safe Battle River project coordinator Sherri Armstrong. “Most times they (elders) have a relationship with that person and they still want to honour that relationship.” Armstrong said that more often than not it takes several times for an elder to hear information before they decide to take action and make a change. The challenge for organizations such as the Family Violence Action Society (FVAS) is to identify the supports and services available or needed in order to serve both the abused and the abuser and ultimately provide a safe and secure environment and encourage healthy relationships. The FVAS is a registered charitable organization which is funded in part by Camrose and District Support Services, Alberta Human Services and Battle River Community Foundation. Recently the minister of seniors and housing announced a $1,200,000 grant as part of the Taking Action Against Elder Abuse Coordinated Community Response Grant Program. Camrose and District Family Violence Action Society was named as one of the recipients and received $50,500 this year and $56,500 last year. “Elder abuse (response, awareness and education) has been an opportunity that FVAS has taken on and has been working on for a couple
of years prior to actually getting the grant funding,” said Armstrong. “They (FVAS) looked at other models for elder abuse and their protocols to determine how it would work in Camrose and to develop a network for providing opportunities for people to receive training so they can become what we refer to as responders.” A level one responder to elder abuse is educated in identifying elder abuse and providing a phone number for a local agency so that they can receive support. “By obtaining the grant funding we are able to expand that network and have more people as responders and more people who know about elder abuse.” Armstrong said the network is already increasing and more agencies within the community are becoming involved and taking responder training sessions. “More people are starting to be able to respond if there are issues,” said Armstrong. “The network also helps to identify any gaps in services in regards to elder abuse. For example right now we know that we don’t have an emergency bed that is suitable for either a man or a woman. There is an emergency shelter but it is only for women and an emergency shelter for elder abuse has different requirements.” Armstrong described three key areas that need to be addressed in the issue of elder abuse as: decreasing isolation, having effective transportation and safe and secure housing. “In regards to the grant, the overall goal is to have this network all over Alberta and to have one common help number, which is 211 for family violence.” Armstrong noted that any information supplied for
a referral would be specific to that local area. “Right now this particular network is servicing Camrose and Camrose County and we are just starting to move west into Wetaskiwin as different agencies agree to become a part of it then we liaise with other areas. “I am able to go whereever needed to do training,” she said. “I have a lot of flexibility. Sometimes I might train only one or two people or sometimes I might train a whole group. “The St. Mary’s Hospital stroke team did training during one of their staff meetings.” Individuals or groups interested in receiving free responder training can contact the Family Violence Action Society director at 780672-0141. Partners supporting elder abuse response, awareness and education include Family Violence Action Society, Camrose and District Support Services, Camrose Police Service, Camrose and District Victim Services, Camrose Women’s Shelter, Camrose S en ior s’ C oa l it i o n , Camrose Primary Care Network, Tofield/Ryley Beaver and Viking/Beaver FCSS, Canadian Mental Hea lt h A ssociation, A ssociation of Communities Against Abuse, AHS and Mental Health and Addiction. “Without these partners this would not be happening to the degree that is; we are one of the leaders in the province,” commented Armstrong. If you or anyone you know may be suffering from elder abuse email eldersafebattleriver@gmail.com or telephone 211; you will be connected to services within your local area.
A Camrose team won the Alberta 55 plus Zone 4 Bowling Challenge Cup at Ponoka Lanes with 10 teams entered. The Camrose team was victorious with 182 pins over their average, 11 more than the closest team from Rimbey. The team included Sharon Olsen, Bob Burt, Paul Davis and Frank Snopek.

Downtown market off to a good start By Dan Jensen
The weekly Downtown Camrose Market is off to a great start. “We are up to 30 vendors now, a number that has far exceeded our expectations,” said Downtown Camrose board member Debbie Thompson last week. “We had hoped for that many but we weren’t really expecting it so quickly.” The market features a large assortment of items that are either “made, baked or grown,” including fresh fruits and vegetables, organic meats, homemade decor and baked items fresh from the oven. Hours of operation are 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday evening. The market was launched June 9, after three years of research and planning, under the billing of “the first outdoor market in the Camrose area.” Downtown Camrose (formerly City Center Camrose) provided all the seed money and hired the first manager. “We had a lot of people who were questioning why we didn’t have a market downtown,” said Thompson. “We thought it would be a great addition to the excellent shopping we already have and would encourage more people to come down here. It fits well with the Downtown Camrose mission to make downtown a great place to live, work and play.” Downtown Camrose Market acting manager Connie Turre said the market is exactly what she dreamed it would be. “We are so pleased with the vendors and assortment of products. I believe we have top notch vendors, some of whom are in their teens and some of whom have been doing this for years. They all present themselves in a professional manner. It’s great to see the entrepreneurial spirit of the young people.”
Nicola Irving sells meat fresh from Irvings Farm Fresh near Round Hill.
Frieda Thompson, who operates Frieda’s Baking, said the market is the best thing that has happened to downtown Camrose. “The number of customers is increasing all the time. It makes me happy when I see the number of people who come back for more of my baking because they enjoyed it so much the first time. I would say I sell to about 75 to 100 customers every week.” Francois Michaud, who goes by The French Raw Chef, said the market is a brilliant idea.
“I think it is exactly what Camrose needed because, obviously, people are coming downtown in droves. We see new people discovering the market every week. I take my products to about a dozen markets and this is definitely one of the best.” Michaud said the idea of an outdoor market appeals to those who want to get outside and explore new shopping opportunities. “An outdoor market is something that Camrose was missing.” Downtown Camrose is
hoping there will be enough growth in the market to expand it to 49 Avenue east of 50 Street (it is currently on 49 Avenue west of 50 Street). “If we continue to get new vendors at the rate we are getting them we should be able to go there (to the other side) before the end of the summer,” said Thompson. “We already have permission from the City of Camrose.” The market will run all day this Thursday immediately after the conclusion of the Chamber of Commerce BVJ Kickin’ Country parade.
Downtown Camrose envisions the Downtown Camrose Market to be a destination market similar to the markets at St. Albert, downtown Edmonton, and Old Strathcona. “We’re trying to model our market after those but at the same time we don’t want to get too big,” said Thompson. “I think if we had around 100 vendors that would be our limit. The fear is if we get too big it will be too diluted because we don’t have the population to sustain it. We would rather just have a great array of products from a good number of quality vendors.” The market will shut down Sept. 29 and evaluated over the course of the winter to see if any improvements can be made. “To be honest there hasn’t been a lot of time to think of improvements because of all the work that is involved in organizing it and getting it going, but there are some things that we are considering: some centred around housekeeping and some around parking,” said Thompson. “We sometimes have problems with people parking on the street because they didn’t realize the street will be closed.” There is also a wish to attract more food vendors so that people can grab something to eat or drink while they are doing their shopping. “We have a local vendor, Friendly Dog, who is selling hot dogs and smokies, and someone else who is selling fresh lemonade,” said Thompson. “Having a few more of those, as well as more places to sit down, would turn our market into a real gathering place.” Thursday nights have traditionally been an evening where many businesses offer late night shopping.
McKay sets the bar higher at junior trials By Murray Green
Tim MacKay of Camrose reached a personal best high jump of 2.01 metres at the Canadian Junior and Senior Track and Field Championships and Team Canada Olympic Trials in Edmonton earlier this month. His height earned him the top jump in youth competition (his own age group) and fourth in juniors, the age group older that him. The Camrose Composite High School Grade 12 student actually tied for third with a University of Calgary athlete at Foote Field in Edmonton. He went into the meet with a personal best of 1.95m. “I was the underdog, so people didn’t have the expectation for me to do really well. The athlete that I tied received third because he had less faults,” shared McKay.
“Fourth at junior nationals is pretty good and the winning jump was 2.10m, so that is getting within reach for me.” Based on that performance, McKay could reach the 2.03m mark later this summer. He is going to a western tri-prov competition in Regina, Saskatchewan in August and then enter youth Legion national track events before heading into the winter season. The Canadian Games are in Winnipeg next year and McKay has his sites on showing well in that high profile event. The Legion nationals are in Brandon, Manitoba next season as well. The high jump athlete won a gold medal at the recent Alberta Summer Games in Leduc on July 15 to 17 with a 1.95m leap, which
set a new record. He tried a 2.03m jump, just barely knocking down the bar with his trailing foot. “The Alberta Summer Games are about fun for younger athletes and I am trying to focus on personal bests and improving for upcoming track meets, so I was there for different reasons,” he explained. “Sleeping on four inch mats in classrooms with 10 other people and staying with your group all weekend was definitely not ideal. It gave me a chance to set a record and give me confidence knowing I’m close to 2.03m now.” McKay is known as a jumper because of his fivestep jumps. Most international athletes progress through a seven, nine and 11 step system that he hasn’t even
approached yet. The extra running distance allows athletes to gain more height. “That is something that I will work on in the off-season. I should be able to add more height once I use more steps and gain momentum. Right now I’m just a pure jumper,” he said. “Tim is an incredibly gifted athlete. Anybody who can jump over two metres at his age has to be. Jumping that high requires an excellent nervous system (coordination) and power (speed and strength). Tim has come about these attributes at a very young age through a combination of genetics and occasional specialized training (with me in Edmonton),” said coach Linda Blade. “As the mental game is just as important as physi-
cal attributes, it must be said that Tim has admirable ability to pre-focus - to be able to imagine a situation in advance and anticipate solutions to problems. He displays a higher percentage than many top athletes at being able to implement his own corrections when he misses a jump in competition,” she explained. “I have observed exceptional intelligence regarding the biomechanics of high jump. Tim’s mind is like that of an engineer. When he looks at a video of a jump, he can identify at least five technical factors that contributed to the success or failure of the attempt,” she added. “This young man was born to perform and compete. It is inspiring and fun to be his coach,” said Blade.

Swimmers turn in medal winning performances at Games By Murray Green
Two members of the Camrose Swimming Club Sea Serpents brought home medals from the Alberta Summer Games in Leduc on July 14 to 17. Casara Holm earned a bronze in 50 metre freestyle, a bronze in the 200m freestyle, a silver in the 50m butterfly and a gold in the 200m individual medley relay. Casara received medals in four of the six events that she entered. “It was fun to swim against winter club people. Since I swim in the summer, we normally don’t get a chance to do that,” shared Casara. “It was interesting to swim against them. I had a lot more competition, which pushed me and I found it really fun.” Madison Hoyme competed in triathlon on two relay teams. In the age 12 to 13 division she earned a bronze in the 12 to 15 age category; her team placed fourth. Madison came in third in individual times, but it didn’t count. “I was only old enough to compete in the relays, not as an individual at the Games. When you are 12 or 13 you can be in the relays, but you have to be 14 to compete in the individual events,” explained Madison, who can attend the Games again in two years. “It’s inspiring to win a medal this time. At normal triathlons, there are not as many people. There were people that knew a lot about triathlons and it was a lot more competitive.” The Summer Games has created a different atmosphere in Alberta than just competing for medals. “I found it cool to see all of the other athletes and how good they are at different sports. To see how good they are was fun to watch,” said Casara. “I was a little nervous at first because the other swimmers
knew each other, but I didn’t, but it was fun.” The Summer Games features eight zones across Alberta. “It was neat to see other sports that I had never seen before like lacrosse. I also had the chance to watch Casara swim,” said Madison. “It was a good opportunity to make new friends. I knew a couple in advance, but it was nice to meet new people.” The Games experience reaffirmed methods that local athletes already train in and focus on competing. “There are a lot of fast people out there, so it pushes me to go even faster and work harder to improve my times. It really pushed me that way,” added Casara. “There are a lot of fast people in triathlon too. My bike time is not as fast as my running and swimming, so I always tried to keep up to everyone. It was nice to have someone in front to keep pushing me to do better by keeping up,” shared Madison. “Our coaches gave us feedback on how we were doing and what to work on. They got us pumped up and ready to go when you were ready to race,” Casara said. “No matter what sport we did, our swimming coaches always supported us and encouraged us and that always helps,” added Madison. Casara set a provincial record in the 400m freestyle event for the summer swimming season, but is waiting for word on whether or not it is counted at the Games. “We are waiting to see if the time will be accepted as a games record,” said Sea Serpents coach Shane Gau. “I’m hoping they recognize it. I’m confident she will get it again, so I’m not super concerned. Casara is the type of an athlete that will bring her best every time, so I wasn’t surprised that she did it.” Casara turned in sev-

eral personal best times as she prepares for the club’s host meet in Wetaskiwin on Aug. 5 to 7, regionals and provincials. “Most of the swimmers are from winter clubs so they have trained for 10 months and are at the end of their season,” explained coach Gau. “Our club trains to peak for provincials. We are only three quarters into our
season, so Casara isn’t close to her peak yet. We have a month of training. For her to do what she did is incredible. Very few summer club swimmers get that opportunity. Our athletes try out for the Games at the beginning of our season, so it is hard for them.” This is the first year in the swim club for Madison. “For her to be third best in
her first year, that’s outstanding. You would never know by watching her that she is a first year swimmer. She swims like she has been swimming for years,” said Gau. Both swimmers have a strong commitment to sports and don’t miss practices, or meets. “They have a strong work ethic and have good attitudes.”
Armena hosts baseball semifinals By Murray Green
The Ryley Rebels and Armena Royals were named the hosts of the semifinals in the Powerline Baseball League. Ryley grabbed first place in the league with a 10-4 record and earned the right to host the Rosalind Athletics. Armena hosts
the Beaumont Angels in the other draw. The other three teams posted a 9-5 record to create a tiebreaking stir in the board room. Rosalind and Beaumont host game two of the series on July 26 beginning at 7 p.m. If game threes are needed, they will be played

Enriching the soul through the soil By Lori Larsen
Avid gardeners will be the first to admit that digging in the soil, planting seedlings and ultimately watching them grow can be wonderful therapy not only for the gardener but the earth as well. The Chester Ronning Centre of the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus, along with some community organizations, has initiated the Seeds for the Soul summer series, under the umbrella project Spirit of the Land, as a way to teach members of the community practical skills for maintaining sustainability of the land, environment and spirit. “We have already had two events,” said Spirit of the Land intern Carley Angelstad. The third event will be taking place on Aug. 3 at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park from 6 to 8 p.m. The session will include a presentation by Railway Station director Glenys Smith on companion gardening and a presentation by Bernice Kadatz on the grassland restoration project at the Meeting Creek Canadian Northern Railway Station. The event will also include some fun crafts and activities for children and a visit from the Camrose Public Library Book Bike. “The first event was in June and was hosted at the Ronning Centre,” noted Angelstad “For the first hour we learned all the different things you can do with pine needles such as pine needle tea, paint brushes, soap, fire starters and incense. “The second event was held at the beginning of July at the Camrose Public Library. We learned how to make our own aquaponic system in the first hour and in the second hour we
discussed a chapter from the book Sacred Economics: Money, Gift and Society in the Age of Transition (author Charles Eisenstein) and how realistic it is or isn’t in people’s lives.” Angelstad, along with two other equally enthusiastic interns, Kate and Anderson Gael, are responsible for expanding the Spirit of the Land class and conference that has been taking place in November for five years. “We are hoping to reach new demographics and new areas of the public that maybe haven’t heard of us before,” explained Angelstad. “One way we wanted to do that was with more successful programming off campus.” The format of the events has attendees doing some hands on projects during the first hour. The second hour is reserved for philosophical discussion in an attempt to get diverse members of the community and surrounding areas sharing ideas about how to work together on sustainability all the while respecting all earthly gifts. The events are free and welcome all ages. The premise behind Spirit of the Land is a network of peoples from diverse places inspired to work for the healing and restoration of the world; peace for all the lands, waters and communities of the world. This is a community-led initiative. The Spirit of the Land conference will be held in November at Augustana. For more information visit the Spirit of the Land website at spiritoftheland.ca/ or by email at spiritofthe land1@gmail.com.

Clara Johanna Johnson March 7, 1915 ~ July 19, 2016 Clara Johanna Johnson, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, passed away on July 19, 2016 at the age of 101 in Camrose, Alberta. Clara was born in Bole, Montana on March 7, 1915. The family returned to the New Norway area in November 1917 and then moved to farm at Rosalind, Alberta in 1923, where a total of nine children were lovingly raised by John and Karen (Aursness) Olstad. Her Norwegian roots ran deep and Clara was very proud of her heritage. After Clara left school, she worked for 10 years in the Rosalind area for various family members and neighbours. In 1944, Clara was offered a job as cook at Camrose Collieries, and it was there that she met her future husband, Norval, who drove truck and later was a cat operator. They married in Camrose in 1945 and their daughter Lorraine Karen was born in 1946. They lived and worked at Camrose Collieries until 1954, moving to Camrose where Clara and Norval both worked at Rosehaven. Clara loved her work at Rosehaven, bringing tender and loving care to the residents. The best part was the friendships forged with coworkers still existing today. Clara lived and thrived in Rosealta Lodge for eight years, participating in all events and enjoying the company of the residents and staff. Celebrating her 100th birthday in 2015 was a joyous event and she revelled in the memories of that wonderful day. Clara most recently lived at Bethany Meadows, Willow House, receiving the most kind and gentle care from the staff. Clara’s relationship with God brought her much comfort. Clara is survived by her devoted family, daughter Lorraine and son-in-law Paul Rattell of Calgary, AB; grandchildren Jason (Amy Elliott and Sophie) of Nanaimo, BC and Erin and husband Mario Henriques of Calgary AB; sister-in-law Betty (Ben) Laursen of Kelowna, BC; and her many, many loving nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends. Clara was predeceased by her husband Norval in 1997; and her beloved granddaughter Julie Ayn in 2014. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2016 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Eriksson officiating. Inurnment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Mental Health Association (c/o Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division, 320 Ledgeview Business Centre, 9707-110 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5K 2L9) or to the Alberta Diabetes Foundation. Mosquito, peewee baseball teams host provincials By Murray Green
Peewee baseball
The Camrose double-A mosquito captured first place at the Airdrie triple-A Little League Tournament on July 1 to 3 as they were preparing for hosting Baseball Alberta provincials. Both the mosquito and peewee squads are hosting provincials at Kin Park, Aug. 5 to 7. The mosquito division will feature six teams and the peewee version of the finals will have eight clubs battling for the title. Camrose has been playing at a solid pace this season and ranks third or fourth in the province as they head into the Tier 1 playoffs. “I feel the strength of the team is that we are a very deep club. We have a lot of very solid pitchers and have great hitters throughout our lineup. I think our biggest strength is our defense. We have a lot of boys that can play multiple positions and be effective in those positions,” explained coach John Kelndorfer. “The teams that will be participating at provincials are all very good. Every team has the ability to challenge for the title. Our group of boys has improved tremendously throughout the year, and I think we have the talent and capability to take the next step and challenge for the provincial championship. It should make for a very exciting weekend of baseball,” continued coach Kelndorfer. The team of Cohan Harrison, Nate Gotaas, Max Logelin, Dawson Sparrow, Jackson Goosen, Treyton Dewald, Mike Dingman, Grayson Jarrett, Cody Nordstrom, Rylan Kelndorfer, Hayden McIndoe and Jake Popowich. The coaching staff consists of Kelndorfer, Wes Harrison, Brad Dingman and Brent Gotaas. The provincials will feature an opening ceremonies on Aug. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Kin 2 diamond.
The peewee club has been a force all year and is often ranked as the best team in Tier 1. “We have strong team chemistry (boys enjoy playing the game and being together) and we have depth in batting, fielding and pitching,” shared coach Ryan Popowich. “The team acronym is BEST (Better Every Single Time) they show on the field and the boys have really adopted this philosophy and work very hard in practices striving to get better as team,” he added. “Once in a while we can get a bit complacent and take the foot off the gas. They need to be reminded at times to play a complete game,” said coach Popowich. “We need consistency in being able to perform at their best, stay focused on what makes them successful individually, and as a group.” Hosting provincials comes with some expectations. “The team has set the goal to win a provincial championship. Our second year players learned a very hard lesson last year going in as provincial favorites, and not even making a semi-final. Our first year players won Tier 1 provincials last year at the mosquito level, so this group, as a whole, has lots of experience to draw from. As well, this same group two years ago, came up just short winning silver in provincials, so they are hungry to win it all together this time around. The focus will be to get to semi-final Sunday, and with some luck and strong play, have a chance to play for a championship,” said the coach. Members of the team include Gavin Galenza, Dylan Soch, Braden Bowler, Evan Williams, Graydon Gotaas, Sam Popowich, Blake Sitler, Josh Erick, Justin Kushnerick, Brett Sharkey and Jager Broughton. Popowich, Scott Sitler and Terry Soch coach the peewee squad.

Riopel leads Camrose Axemen at all-star game The annual North Central Alberta Baseball League all-star game is always a highlight for the better players. Hosted by the Barrhead Orioles, the mid-summer classic featured the Beverly Optimist Club All-stars in the lead for most of the contest until the last inning when the opportunistic Leon’s Stars home club won it with a bases loaded and two out walk that scored the winning run in walk-off fashion, 5-4. For the Beverly Allstars the most effective hitting performance was given to Jordan Riopel whose two RBI triple was the most productive hit of the day putting the visitors

2017 Ford Escape Embraces new technology By Murray Green
The brand new 2017 Ford Escape line is know in at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose. The new models feature high quality advanced technology, style, great fuel economy and a spirited driving experience. “Everything inside has been modernized to keep up with advanced technology. It has it all to give drivers comfort and dependability,” said Sales Associate Jan Nowakoski. Under the hood drivers can choose between two new EcoBoost engines, a 1.5-liter EcoBoost and a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged EcoBoost. Buyers can expect to see an even more fuelefficient vehicle with the 1.5-liter engine, since it is a smaller engine than the 2016’s 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost. Just like the 2016 model’s EcoBoost technology, the 2017’s EcoBoost technology helps to produce a cooler and denser fuel injection charge that can generate more power per every drop of fuel. EcoBoost engine torque is specially engineered to provide a fluid shifting experience and enhanced fuel economy. The available intelligent all-wheel-drive system uses software and sensors

to analyze data from 25 external signals, including wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle. The system uses the sensor inputs to help the driver turn the vehicle – adding and subtracting torque as needed via an electromagnetic clutch to deliver confident handling and traction performance in a variety of conditions. “The Escape also has Curve Control technology to assist the driver by automatically slowing the vehicle when it’s cornering too fast. Torque Vectoring Control applies brake force to the front inside wheel so that more engine torque can be applied to the outside wheel. The result is better handling and traction,” added Nowa-
koski. Active Grille Shutters can be adjusted on the 2.5 litre and 1.6 litre models for greater fuel efficiency. Escape’s EcoBoost engines come standard with specially calibrated sixspeed select shift automatic transmissions that can provide a more hands-on experience via manual gear selection control. The Class II trailer tow package enables up to 3,500 pounds of towing capability. Trailer sway control will help by monitoring the motions of your vehicle to detect trailer sway. If needed, it can reduce engine
sp e e d and selectively apply brakes to help you maintain control of both the vehicle and the trailer. Plenty of space Escape provides up to 1,920 litres of cargo space with the rear seat folded. For a flat load surface, fold the reclining 60/40 split rear seat down and place the adjustable cargo load floor in its highest position. The available hands-free liftgate allows fast and easy access to the cargo area with a gentle kicking motion. Discreetly stow your goto essentials in the front centre console. And keep others
close at hand in the storage tray next to each front seat. Escape takes care of you and your front passenger with 10-way power, heated and leather trimmed seats, standard on Titanium. And every model comfortably supports with more hip room and more rear leg room than the previous generation. Technologies updated
The Ford Escape has several available technologies that add to its versatility. “The new 2017 Ford Escape gives SUV drivers even more of what they want. It is equipped with more smart features to help make their drive safer and easier, feature greater connectivity, two new EcoBoost engines, and Auto StartStop Technology that saves fuel in heavy traffic,” shared Nowakoski. Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert displays an alert in the side mirror when a vehicle is detected entering a blind spot. Cross-traffic alert warns if traffic is detected approaching from the sides You can see the 2017 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

BUSINESS KEEPS BUILDING AT HAUSER HOME HARDWARE
WE’RE HIRING!
By Murray Green
Zone 4 boys missed the medal round in U13 soccer this year, but the team was close in several games. The Alberta Summer Games were held in Leduc from July 14 to 17. Kris Thomson and Clint MacPherson were named coach and assistant coach for the Zone 4 team. They had a few close games that could have gone either way and then lost 6-0 to the Calgary team, which Thomson said is always very strong and has won gold medals. The team was made up of half of the Red Deer Renegade U12 boys and the other half were boys who played in CASA Tier 4. All the boys got to play at a very high level of competition for the weekend and had a great time making new friends and gauging their skills with the rest of the Alberta soccer players of their age group. Thomson, who was the head coach, will now move on to be the assistant coach for the Augustana men’s soccer team this upcoming fall season. MacPherson will resume coaching with the Sherwood Park Phoenix U14 boys team. Thomson was an assistant coach two years ago in Airdrie at the Games and Clint’s son played in those games.

Years after toiling over the long ribbons of track, Doug Roper is back in the railway business. Roper will be making applications for grants, marketing, seeking out sponsorship opportunities, and booking school tours as the new managing director of the Canadian Northern Society Railway Station and Park in Camrose. Roper said there is a lot more to the station than first meets the eye. “When you think of railway stations your first thought is tracks and trains, but Glenys and the volunteers here have worked up some very unique programs around the history of the railway, gardening and saving the earth. I know the educational programs that are offered every spring for the students have received a very warm response.” Roper was intrigued with the historical aspect of operating a railway station. “I managed the Phoenix Theatre in northern B.C. for 17 years and was the manager of the historic Bailey Theatre in Camrose so I felt this job would be a good fit,” he said. “My wife and I bought a home in Camrose in 2014 and we want to stay here.” “I started out as a brakeman and worked my way up to an engineer,” he said. Smith is happy to have Roper as a member of the team. “He has a lot of experience as a manager and knows how a non profit organization works,” she said.

Airport in the market for a new or used remote altimeter By Lori Larsen
During the regular council meeting held on July 18, city council authorized a request from administration to negotiate the purchase of a new or used remote altimeter for the Camrose Airport, with the monies (if required) to be taken from the general capital reserve. With the installation of a new AltaLink communications tower on the east edge of the City there are concerns related to its height and the safety of pilots. A remote altimeter would allow local pilots to have more precise elevation of any nearby height obstructions resulting in improved pilot safety all the while permitting the communication tower to be installed at its full height. “The new communications tower will be about 20 metres taller than the existing tower,” said City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson “We have been working with AltaLink to eliminate some of our concerns over their new tower installation.
AltaLink, through their letter of support, has identified and recognized that they would be responsible for a large portion of the cost.” AltaLink’s financial commitment for the device would be 100 per cent of the first $20,000 of the project and 50 per cent of the remaining $40,000 for the anticipated project cost. “Should we proceed with a new unit there would potentially be a cost for the city of up to $10,000,” said Enarson. Councillor PJ Stasko questioned as to whether or not a quote had been obtained for a used remote altimeter, indicating that if a used system was $20,000 AltaLink would then cover the full costs. In response Enarson indicted, “We are working with another municipality that has a used remote altimeter which they are in the process of decommissioning because their airport is shutting down entirely. “From what we understand the consultant we are working with indicated this
used device is about 10 to 12 maybe, 15 years old.” Enarson said this consultant was the same company that originally supplied the device and would attest to the quality of the unit. The City is also working with its consultant to price out a new unit, although detailed pricing was not available at the time of the council meeting. If the other municipality’s council decides to sell the unit the cost for the unit would be $10,000 and another $10,000 for the consultant to decommission, deliver and install the unit in Camrose. “That would mean $20,000 for the used unit as opposed to a new unit that would cost in the $35,000 to $38,000 range,” said Enarson. Mayor Norm Mayer added that AltaLink agreed to pay 50 per cent over and above the $20,000 up to a maximum of $10,000 for a new device. “Sometimes it is worth the extra money to have the new device and not have to worry so much whether the used one is going to work,” said Mayor Mayer.
