REFLECTIONS
Letters to the Editor
by Bonnie Hutchinson No regrets On May 28, 1991, my father died suddenly and unexpectedly. On that night, when we had finished with the things that needed to happen immediately and were back in my mother’s home, here is one of the things my mother said: “You know, I have no regrets. We did all the things we wanted to do together and we said all the things we wanted to say to
each other.” I thought that was an amazingly wonderful thing to be able to say. I also knew that if I were to die that night, I would not be able to say it. I resolved to change that. In that context, I was interested to read an article making the internet rounds right now: “Top 5 Regrets of the Dying.” *** Bronnie Ware, a palliative care nurse, has written a book about the most common regrets expressed by her patients during their last days. Nearly all of her patients were more concerned with the relationships they had built with others and being truly happy than they were with money, fame or success. Bronnie Ware says, “People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance to them... It all comes down to love and relationships in the end.” Here are what Bronnie Ware says are the five most common regrets among people at the end of their lives. 1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. This was the most common regret. People whose lives are almost over will often pay attention to what they failed to do in the time they had. Ware found that most people had not realized even half of their dreams, and knew that it was because of choices they’d made.
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Carbon tax
The Alberta government has just passed the Carbon tax bill. As an Albertan I was not too pleased with this tax because of the burden this will place on families who are already struggling with paying their monthly bills. The deed has been
done! There is nothing we as Albertans can do about it so we might as well just move on. So, I began to look and see what this bill could do for me. Now, I am an adult with a spouse and no children. I am sure this will mean something else to all those people with one child to 14 children. You will be getting more money than myself. But that is your problem and not mine. The rebates will start in 2017 in January. This will work similar to our GST rebates. If the amount owed to your family is more than $400 per year, the government will give you four equal payments equaling that amount. January, April, July and October. If from $200 to $399 is owed then two equal payments in January and July will be handed out. If the amount is $100 to $199 owed to you
then it will be one payment in January. The ceiling where the amounts will not be paid out are as following. Any single person who makes over $51,250, a couple at over $100,000, a couple with two children is over $101,500 and a couple with four children is over $103,000. You can find all this listed on the website, www.alberta. ca under carbon levy and rebates. Do I believe this will be good for Alberta? I do not personally believe it is good for this province. However, I am not too proud to take any money that the government wants to give me. Time will tell how good or how bad this tax will be for our province. Like the saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, join them” Lorne W.P Vanderwoude, Camrose
Faulkner captures race in Rimbey By Murray Green
Camrose junior dragster driver Ryder Faulkner garnered first place in the CMDRA drag racing event in Rimbey on July 22 to 24. This win came a week
after he placed second at the Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals on July 15 to 17 at Edmonton Castrol Raceway. Faulkner raced in a
65 car field of entries at nationals. The Bittern Lake area nine-year-old junior dragster driver will enter several other races over the next two months.
2. I wish I didn’t work so hard. Every male patient had this regret. They felt they had spent less quality time with their families, missing their children growing up, and not spending enough time with their partners. 3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings. Many patients felt that they had repressed their feelings in order to keep the peace with others. Ware said that many had developed illnesses relating to the resentment they felt as a result of hiding their true feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. It can be hard to keep in touch with old friends when life gets in the way, and it is not uncommon to forget people as you go about your everyday routine. Dying patients didn’t truly realize how much they valued their friends until it was too late, by which point they had lost contact and it was not possible to track down old friends. 5. I wish I had let myself be happier. Many did not realize until they were dying that happiness is a choice you make. Fear of change, pleasing others and the general habits and patterns they formed in life had prevented them from true happiness. *** Bronnie Ware says, “When you’re on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying. Life is a choice. It is your life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, and choose honestly. Choose happiness.” Words to live by. So what do you want to be able to say about your life? And what does that mean for right now? *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

PROTECTING ALBERTANS AGAINST UNFAIR POWER BILLS The Government of Alberta is going to court to protect Albertans from being forced to pay for the business losses of five power companies. The companies are trying to offload their losses onto Albertans because of a deal made between the former government and Enron, a discredited and now-bankrupt U.S. electricity operator. Albertans shouldn’t have to pay for the losses of electricity companies. This ‘Enron clause’ was never raised during months of public hearings that were supposed to ensure Albertans got a fair deal as their electricity system was deregulated. And, there is evidence the Enron clause was enacted unlawfully by the previous government and then deliberately withheld from the public.

The Government is asking the court to overturn the Enron clause and protect Albertans against an estimated $2 billion in business losses over the next four years. If successful, any additional electricity fees charged to the public due to the Enron clause will be refunded back to Albertans. Albertans shouldn’t be on the hook for a backroom deal that allows companies to collect the profits when power prices are high and hand consumers the losses when prices are low. That’s why the Government of Alberta is taking legal action – to protect Albertans. Learn more at powerpurchase.alberta.ca

The EnCana Arena PV (solar installation) project will be expanding as a result of additional funding made available through the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC). During the Regular Council meeting held on July 18 council approved proceeding with the expansion of the solar photovoltaic power system at the EnCana Arena at the additional cost of $477,065 subject to approval of the Climate Change Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC) subsidy of $233,446 and that 75 per cent of the capital funding be financed through the Capital Reserve and the remaining 25 per cent funded through a 15-year lease with the lease payments funded annually though the City’s operational budget. “We received notification that our project would be approved if we wanted to expand it,”explained City of Camrose director of Finance and Asset Management Grant Egerdie. “They (CCEMC) would not let anyone use it of for a new project so we looked at how we would expand the EnCana project. The expansion is possible due to densification resulting from more efficient layout, and the
reduced dimensions of the LG PV panels, which are higher output, and take up less area than the original panel design.” Currently the EnCana project is 734kW with the cost of $1,064,445 covered by the city, which was financed in a lump sum through the Capital Reserves of $798,334 on a 15-year lease. The return on investment is 5.4 per cent. The expansion of the project would mean an increase to 1,063.39 kW and a further contribution by the city of $477,064. “We would have exactly the same return on investment because the funds would be available at exactly the same ratio,” said Egerdie. As an expansion to the already existing EnCana project the contractors, types of panels and supports for panels would all remain the same. Councillor Bill Sears questioned as to whether or not the project would have to be retendered. Egerdie’s reply indicated the original project was approved only six to eight weeks prior and because this was an expansion would not require a retender. “With your approval we would just use this as an expansion to an existing contract with the same economics. We would
assume nothing has changed and it is in line with the Purchasing Policy and Tendering Guidelines for Alberta.” Two other options for the expansion of the EnCana project, along with the densification to the EnCana Arena, were also proposed and included installing some solar panels on the curved roof of the Max McLean building and the roof of the community centre. Councillors Max Lindstrand and Agnes Hoveland expressed concerns regarding leaks at both the Community Centre and Max McLean buildings. Councillor Greg Wood voiced his concern over using capital reserve to further fund this project. “I have concerns over the future of the reserves and where this is going. This is a luxury item and I am not prepared to spend reserve on it.” Councillor PJ Stasko inquired as to the timing window for accepting the funding from CCEMC. Egerdie indicated they (CCEMC) required a decision immediately or the funding would be offered elsewhere. With the expansion to the EnCana Arena roof the completion of the installation is now projected for the end of October as opposed to September.

Pam Reber,Owner,
Jenn Stone,
Wisemen’s Way Bookstore Pam doesn’t feel it was really a choice for her to buy the well- established Christian business in downtown Camrose … it was more like a calling. “I really felt that this was the way that I could better help people learn about the Truth and to get to know God.” The little bookstore at the end of main street has seen numerous changes since Pam assumed ownership eight years ago. For starters, don’t let the name fool you. There is a lot more than books on the shelves. Pam continually adds more inventory and there is also a selection of Christian music, movies, jewelry, church supplies, Sunday school and VBS curriculum, toys, books/ bibles, framed pictures and giftware for just about any occasion, including Baptism, Dedication, Confirmation, First Communion, Weddings and more. “We also sell Lugbags and personalized gifts and we engrave in-store. We try very hard to please our customers,” notes Pam. “And we want them to find exactly what they are looking for. If we need to place a special order to make that happen, that’s just fine.” “Declaring His Glory” is our motto at Wisemen’s Way Bookstore, and we want to assist our customers to do the same by providing them with all/any Christian supplies that they may need to glorify God and spread the gospel.”

The Camrose Fire Department put on quite a show during the BVJ Kick Off parade. The antique fire truck towed a burning log cabin, while some outlandish hillbillies hitched a ride. The entry was the winner of the Antique Award.

Camrose welcomes Kamifurano sister city visitors By Lori Larsen and Murray Green
On July 27, guests from Kamifurano, Japan, Camrose’s sister city, were given the chance to experience some of our fair city’s highlights all the while experiencing some Canadian culture. The guests from Japan included 13 students from Kamifurano Junior High School, superintendant of education Hisakazu Hattori, Kamifurano junior high school teacher Sakiko Otomo, representative from Kamifurano-cho board of education Ryoko Kitagawa, Kamifurano-cho assistant English teacher Brian Wright, supporter Junko Shibue and tour conductor Yoshitaka Sasaki tour conductor. Ecole Charlie Killam School vice-principal, Todd Sikorski, along with Camrose/Japan Friendship Society ambassador Michiko Rasmussen, spent the day escorting the delegation around the city. The day began at City Hall where Mayor Norm Mayer welcomed the guests and introduced city councillors present, Agnes Hoveland, Max Lindstrand, Kevin Hycha and Bill Sears, along with city manager Malcolm Boyd. “We hope you have had an exciting and interesting day. It was good to see everyone at the museum at the unveiling of the collection of items that was specially set up to account for the many gifts we have received over the years and to have them in a proper display area. I had the privilege of going to Japan 19 years ago during your 100th anniversary,” said Mayor Norm Mayer, to the visitors. “Hopefully, you have fond memories and enjoy the experience in Camrose.” After a tour of council chambers and City Hall the group proceeded to a tour of Charlie Killam School, the sister school to Kamifurano Junior High School, the Uni-
versity of Alberta Augustana Campus and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre and the Camrose Public Library. At 1 p.m. the group arrived at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum for the unveiling of the display case dedicated to a collection of gifts given to Camrose from Kamifurano and ToyamaChuo-Nogyo High School in Ohyama-Machi, Japan. During the visit at the museum the guests had an opportunity to look at the collections and artifacts on display and visit the one room school house. They were also given a very special welcome in Japanese by the children of the Camrose Art Society summer program. After the museum tour the group headed to downtown Camrose where they visited the Bailey Theatre and were then given some free time to take in the shops and businesses of the downtown area. The busy day was rounded up with a banquet hosted by the Best Western Casino and Resort at 5 p.m. and attendees enjoyed some of Camrose’s local talent in the Charlie Killam School band and Camrose Spirals skip roping team. “This year 13 students and five chaperones came to visit Canada from Kamifurano. They came to experience Canadian culture,” superintendant of education Hisakazu Hattori. “We like to visit Camrose because of the hospitality and its welcoming citizens. The students enjoy learning about Camrose and sharing information about their culture in Kamifurano.” He said Kamifurano welcomes the friendship with Camrose that was started many years ago. “We hope that our sister city friendship grows even stronger,” said Hattori.
During their visit in Camrose the Kamifurano guests attended an unveiling at Camrose and District Centennial Museum of a display case dedicated to the gifts given to the City of Camrose over the years from Kamifurano. Left, superintendant of education from Japan Hisakazu Hattori expressed his appreciation for the exhibit at the museum and hospitality shown by the City of Camrose as Camrose/Japan Friendship Society ambassador Michiko Rasmussen translates.
Kamifurano students sang the Canadian national anthem at a banquet celebrating the friendship between the sister cities.
Japanese students, right, presented a give to Charlie Killam School students after the band performed for their guests.
The City of Camrose and the Camrose/Japan Friendship Society welcomed 18 guests from Kamifurano, Camrose’s sister city in Japan. During a tour of Camrose City Hall the guests had an opportunity to stop and pose for a photograph in city chambers with the mayor, a few members of council, city manager and representatives from Camrose.

Reading University certificates granted By Dan Jensen
University of Alberta Augustana Campus vicedean Dr. Kim Misfeldt presented certificates of achievement July 28 to the 74 students who completed the 2016 Reading University Program at the Augustana, Tofield and Flagstaff campuses. Dr. Misfeldt expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments, along with the hope that they had discovered the fun of learning and reading. “Reading can take you on adventures to other places and other times – all in your imagination,” she said. “Through reading we can begin to understand what life is like for other people from our city and from across the world. Reading also gives us lots to talk about with our friends. These discussions help us to learn even more.” Dr. Misfeldt told the students they are embarking on an exciting journey in which they can dream any dream, and eventually become anything they want. “I hope you have learned that university is an exciting place to be,” she said. “I hope you’ve learned to feel at home here at Augustana so that you will keep coming back. You can come back for concerts, basketball, soccer or volleyball games. I also hope that in ten or eleven years you will come back as a student to study for a university degree. I know you can do it. You have proven to us that you are smart, you are
talented and you belong at a university like Augustana.” Dr. Misfeldt described Reading University as a special program where parents, generous community members, the Battle River School Division and the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta come together to help young people find joy in reading. “It takes all of us working together to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people,” she said. Dr. Misfeldt commended the family members of students, Reading University staff, and volunteers for understanding the vital importance of reading as a foundation for lifelong learning, for future career success, for personal satisfaction and for building a meaningful life. “You clearly know how essential it is,” she said, “to develop joyful, excited learners in the elementary grades.” Reading University is a four-week long summer reading program that was initiated by the Battle River Community Foundation in 2009 as a way to increase the literacy skills of children in grades two and three who are not yet reading at grade level. The program’s educational component is designed by the Battle River School Division, which also recruits and pays staff, provides appropriate transportation and invites appropriate children to participate, while the Augustana Campus of

$2,000 per student, or $100 per student per day, an amount that is split equally by the BRCF and BRSD. “The Battle River Community Foundation raises its share with the help of generous and supportive members of the local community,” said BRCF past board chair Blain Fowler. “Their contributions cover the cost of meals and field trips, classroom supplies and items such as backpacks and t-shirts, as well as a selection of books they can take home.” David and Gail Stolee, Berdie Fowler, Ross Huebner, Jack and Irene Wooley, Duncan and Doris Powell, Dave and Cheryl Powell, JPC (Joe and Paula Cramer) Enterprises, the Dan and Cindy Bentley family, Zetsen Master Builders owners Garry Zetsen and Kevin Lindholm and the Rotary Club of Camrose have established endowment funds with the Foundation in support of Reading University. Battle River School Division believes that literacy is the key to its students being successful in life. “We are tireless in our efforts to ensure our students receive a solid foundation in their early years so that they can have the best opportunities in their schooling and adult life,” said BRSD assistant superintendent Shan Jorgenson-Adam. “Reading University is one of many supports we provide to ensure this.” Jorgenson-Adam thanked all the partners who
have supported the program, Reading University teachers and educational assistants who worked to ensure the students had a fun, enjoyable learning experience, and the Division’s transportation staff, who devoted countless hours to ensure the students made it to their campuses and were safely delivered to and from their various field trips. She also thanked all the parents of Reading University students for ensuring their children’s success by enrolling them in a summer reading program. Battle River Community Foundation board chair Vivianne Grue expressed the hope that the students have discovered what a difference reading can make for understanding and discovering new things. She also extended thanks to the BRSD, Augustana Campus and financial supporters for helping Battle River Community Foundation make Reading University a reality. “Blain (Fowler) first brought forward the idea of Reading University for our area,” she said. “He spearheaded it to fruition and continues to be its best promoter and supporter in every way.” Grue said she believes in the saying “It takes a community to raise a child.” “It is definitely heartwarming when individuals and organizations come together to make good things happen, as has been the case with Reading University.”

New weekend library hours start Aug. 6 By Lori Larsen
The Camrose Public Librar y ’s (CPL) numbers speak for themselves as the amount of borrowed items topped 160,403. Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman gave an update presentation to City council members during the Committee of Whole meeting held June 20. “The library is not just a place for books; it is a place for people,” said Cryderman. In 2015, the library welcomed 101,983 people into the building, with another 101,991 virtual visits. It hosted 1403 programs with 21,803 participants. Programs and events
The library offers a variety of programs including the Summer Reading Club, Summer Reading Challenge, Intergenerational Program, after school programs, and the Book Bike. In 2015 approximately 2,500 children participated in the Summer Reading Program. “The Intergenerational programmer will be working to bring generations together,” said Cryderman. She related that the number of children accessing the library after school also increased. “We are happy to have these young people with us but we noticed many of them were coming to the library hungry. In response to this we have found financial support from the Lions Club and Camrose and District Support Services to help fund our after school program Snacks in the Stacks. This program not only provides healthy after school snacks to children but will also include a visit from Alberta Health Services dietician to talk to them about making healthy decisions about after school snacks.” The Book Bike program was the first in Alberta, and was launched in June of 2015. This year the Book Bike won the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Library Service. “We reached out to over 2,583 people with that Book Bike (in 2015),” smiled Cryderman. “People who were not otherwise able to make it to the library.” “So far in 2016 the Book
“We are a tremendous equalizing force where everyone is welcome regardless of age, race, income or gender identity. We are far from being a community dinosaur. Instead we are the coolest place in town,” beamed Cryderman. Sunday opening

The Bunker recently received a fresh coat of paint thanks to seven volunteers from Camrose TELUS.
Bike has already brought service to 770 and they (library riders) signed 50 people up for library cards that didn’t have cards prior to this” The library continues to promote early childhood literacy, services to new Canadians and health related adult programs. On top of the programs offered throughout the year, the library hosts a number of events such as; family literacy day, Be Your Own Valentine, teas and a Christmas party. “Last year we had 514 people come to our Christmas party,” said Cryderman She also commented on the significance volunteers have on the success of the library. “We couldn’t do any of what we do without the generous assistance of volunteers. “In 2015, we had 105 volunteers contribute 2003 hours.” The volunteers provide after school programing, keep shelves tidy and the collections in good condition, move furniture and build sheds. “We had seven volunteers from TELUS come in (for four hours) and paint our entire bunker,” said Cryderman. “We also received a great deal of support from others from supplying prizes for our summer beauty club to financial support totalling over $90,000 in 2015. Parkland regional
Besides access to books, programs and other materials and services, the CPL offers
patrons access to the internet and WiFi. “Access to WiFi is up 60 per cent over the same time last year,” said Cryderman. Parkland Regional Library (PRL) provided a new website for CPL as well as upgrades to Windows 10 and Microsoft 2016 and migration to Microsoft 365. PRL also provided 14 new desktop computers valued at $12,252 and upgraded two laptop computers valued at $2,130. “They (PRL) made improvements to our integrated library system and took over the administration of our interlibrary loans so we can spend more time with the people,” said Cryderman. Parkland Regional Library (PRL) director, Ron Sheppard spoke briefly to council about PRL’s return on investments and the annual report, referring to last year’s statistics. “What PRL does and the value you get is very much behind the scenes,” said Sheppard. The 2015 financial investment on behalf of Camrose Library Board worked out to $139,433 for the municipality of Camrose, $37,258 to Camrose County and $1,731 to the Village of Bittern Lake. “The direct payments back to the Camrose’s library based on 2015 data was almost $28,000, based on rural library service grant,” said Sheppard. Camrose received an allot-
ment of $1.30 per capita to order library materials equalling $23,449 for Camrose, $6,266 for the county and $291 for Bittern Lake. “We pay for internet service and computers for the library including all purchasing of hardware and software licencing. As well we pay for interlibrary loans and provide for the shipping of items from within Parkland. We are also responsible for bringing items in from around the province,” added Sheppard. “Every member of Camrose has access to about 350 different libraries all over Alberta.” As part of the SuperNet, subsidized by the Alberta government, CPL has access to high-speed Internet “Currently Camrose has a 20 megabit connection network but in the fall will be going up to 100 megabit connection upgrade,” said Sheppard. PRL also provides access to a large amount of titles for people who are print disabled, eContent including hoopla digital and Zinio, a resource sharing platform connecting all libraries in the provincial network, and interlibrary loans for loaning outside of Parkland. “We are at the forefront of digital literacy and inclusion,” said Cryderman. “We are giving public access to the latest online platforms and access to programs which allows users to experiment with robotics, electronics, circuits, coding and three dimensional printing.
Councillor Agnes Hoveland inquired about the possibility of the library opening on Sunday. “I have heard comments from people within the community on the fact that the library is closed on Sundays. Can you share with us what the cost would look like if you were open for some hours on Sundays?” Cryderman indicated that not being open on Sundays was one of the most frequent criticisms of the library on satisfaction surveys. “If we were open five hours a day on Sundays basic service, no programming, it would cost us about $29,000 (extra) a year,” replied Cryderman. If we were open eight hours, basic services, it would cost $42,000 a year and if we were to add doing a regular Sunday program it would cost an additional $3,500 a year.” Mayor Norm Mayer suggested the matter of Sunday opening be discussed further among council. On July 4, during the regular council meeting, a draft motion was approved to reduce the Saturday hours at the Camrose Public Library by two hours and open the library on Sundays for four hours, at the cost of $8,500 for the balance of this year ($6,500 for opening on Sundays and $2,000 for family programming on Sundays), and that it be funded from the current surplus, and if not possible, from the accumulated surplus. The new hours will begin on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Sunday Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on the Camrose Public Library and any of the programs or services offered visit the website at cpl.prl.ab.ca/or telephone 780-672-4214.

Get Out Get Active participants kept active in Costa Rica challenge
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Colleen Lindholm of the PCN, left, and Ryan MacDonald, Augustana Fitness Centre coordinator, right, presented Hans Thygesen with his prize package. By Colleen Lindholm, PCN
Congratulations participants of the 2016 Get Out Get Active (GOGA) Challenge. You walked, ran, swam, biked, danced and moved. The challenge is in place to provide a fun way for you to work towards a healthier you and you are well on your way. This was the second year the Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) joined the Edmonton area initiative, replacing the original Virtual Trek. In total there were 3,143 people participating with 753,896,168 logged steps in six weeks. That’s equivalent to walking around the globe 13.8 times. Virtually travelling through Costa Rica, these participants increased their physical and mental wellbeing while receiving valuable health and fitness tips along the way. Of the participants 80 per cent said the challenge made them more aware of their activity levels throughout the day and even though the challenge is over, 91 per cent indicated they will continue being active. Participants had great feedback about the challenge, boasting of higher energy levels, sleeping better, as well as added health benefits of lower blood pressure and reduced chronic pain. Each year of this activity challenge, Augustana Fitness Centre continues to step up as a valued partner. From planning the very fun and well attended Kick-off Trek to offering special rates on memberships for GOGA participants and then providing
a local grand prize of a one year membership (value of $550), the Camrose PCN is very fortunate to have their continued support. The 2016 winner Hans Thygesen was very excited to have his name drawn for the local grand prize. “I learned about the GOGA challenge from my dietitian at the Camrose PCN. The Augustana Fitness Centre membership prize is a wonderful gift that I will be sure to use to its full advantage,” stated Thygesen when he learned he was the winner. “The Augustana Fitness Centre wants to see people from all ages and all fitness levels getting active and living a healthy lifestyle,” said Ryan MacDonald, Augustana Fitness Centre coordinator. “That’s why we’re a dedicated supporter of the annual GOGA challenge. We hope that by providing an annual membership to the Fitness Centre, we will be assisting a lucky winner to continue and grow their active lifestyle.” Another local highlight for the 2016 challenge was when Michelle Bjorgum and her Grade 1 and 2 split class from Round Hill School won the prize for the highest overall participation level for a school group for the entire GOGA challenge. They were excited to participate in various activities every day over the six weeks and many got their families involved when they weren’t at school. They also talked about how they have a very busy Alberta Medical Association (AMA) Youth Run Club Run – with
the school having 44 students involved. The Camrose PCN would also like to mention the Camrose Public Library for offering the “Tuesday Trekkers” weekly walk as part of the Get Out Get Active Challenge. They enjoyed finding new routes to walk each week, having a lot of fun along the way. As well a special thank you to the City of Camrose who provided Aquatic Centre passes and two prizes of walking track passes. “We are happy to be a part of the Get Out Get Active Challenge again this year where we as PCN’s can model the way for active lifestyles and provide people in our community with opportunities for increased physical activity,” said Stacey Strilchuk, executive director of the Camrose PCN. “We know physical activity produces overall physical, psychological and social benefits but it’s important to remember physical activity should be fun too.” The GOGA planning committee pulled the event off with the 2016 GOGA Challenge Sponsors and Program Supporters who helped reach the mission of providing participants an opportunity to join a community wide activity challenge in an effort to promote healthy living as well as experience the benefits of becoming more active. More information will be sent out early in 2017 for next year’s challenge. Watch for the challenge to get even bigger and better at www. camrosepcn.com.

Ronald Stewart Schielke November 23, 1958 ~ July 26, 2016 Ron was born November 23, 1958, to Allan and Marie. He was a much anticipated addition to their family, and they were overjoyed the day they got to bring him home. He grew up on the farm near Duhamel with his brother Kevin and sister Joan. His love of farming was developed from a young age, as he was always helping with the chores around the farm. Ron went to school in New Norway and met Judy at a dance in Edberg in 1978. They married on July 28, 1979. They moved a trailer onto Ron’s grandparents’ home quarter after they were married and welcomed Jocelyn Renee to their family on January 16, 1982. In late summer of 1983, they moved into the main farmhouse and welcomed Shannon Christine shortly after on October 30, 1983. Kimberly Dawn was born on September 25, 1985 and their family was complete. They continued to actively farm until their daughters were grown. They then rented out the land and Ron enjoyed working at RossAgri Supplies and the Andrukow Group in Camrose. Ron spent the last few years working at Edberg Crop Management where he was extremely happy. Ron loved nothing more than his three daughters and seven grandchildren, Kayla, Levi, Benjamin, Reid, Miles, Jake and Nora. There was nothing like the pride in his eyes when he held those babies for the first time. Ron loved to travel and took many vacations with Judy. In December 2014, he took his entire family to Mexico and introduced his grandchildren to his love of the ocean. Ron passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters on July 26, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. As with everything he did, Ron stubbornly refused to give up. He desperately wanted to stay and make more memories with his grandbabies, but the memories we were blessed to make will be cherished and shared with them for a lifetime. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Beware of utility scam By Lori Larsen
Every day a new scam is in the making and somewhere, someone is inventing a new way to con innocent people out of their hard earned money. Some local downtown Camrose businesses have experienced the latest in telephone scams. In this particular scam the threat involves their alleged energy provider threatening to shut off utilities and possible police arrest if their outstanding bills are not paid. Camrose Energy co-owner Denise Hawkins first heard of the scam from a downtown business. “The one person that alerted me said they clued in because they are not with Camrose Energy.” “They (con artists) were targeting the local businesses, mostly from the downtown area, the ones that I had contact with, and they were threatening to come down and shut off the power if they would not pay their bill and they were going to bring the police with them,” said Hawkins. “One small business did end up paying $500. I have not spoken to that business yet, but sadly because they are a customer of ours they bought into the scam.” Hawkins said she was first made aware of the scam at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 22 and by 6 p.m. she had notified the police and sent emails to all Camrose Energy customers warning of the scam. “I have also informed my billing agent in Calgary who in turn notified the Utilities Consumer Advocate, in case they have any complaints.” Hawkins wanted to assure customers that this is not part of Camrose Energy’s collection practices. “I can see how people fall victim,” said Hawkins. “These con artists use high pressure on a Friday afternoon, knowing the business people still have to run their shop. “Part of the intention of these scams is to confuse people and to use fear. You are not thinking clearly when those emotions are in place.” If you receive a telephone call, text or email message regarding any of your utilities or any other organizations the best advice is to stop and think clearly and do not allow the caller to bully you into a decision. Tell the caller you will call the organization back but do not use the telephone number they provide. Contact the organization using an official number provided on an official website or your billing information. If the caller indicates the police will be involved, end the conversation with the caller and then contact either the Camrose Police Service at 780-672-4444 or the RCMP at 780-672-3342.

Rosalind Athletics qualify for Powerline Baseball final By Murray Green
The Rosalind Athletics were the first team to advance to the Powerline Baseball League finals after knocking off the Ryley Rebels in two straight games. Although the Rebels placed first in the league with a 10-4 record, the fourth place Athletics edged
them 6-4 in the first game and blanked them 5-0 in the second meeting in the best of three series to move on to the finals. In the other semi-final series, the Armena Royals shut out Beaumont 4-0 in the opening game, but the Angels fought back with a 9-7 victory in the second game. That forced a
third and deciding game on July 28. The annual all-star game is slated for Harry Andreassen Field in Camrose on Aug. 11. It will feature the Battle River League all-stars against the Powerline Baseball League top players.

Six are completed and two are under construction. Volunteers Sandra McLay and Nola Alton along with staff members of the museum designed these new attractions. In preparation of Canada Day, the Museum set up three additional displays. A sports display using local memorabilia, located in the Fire Hall. A Wedding Day display featuring artifacts including an archival trunk filled with a bride’s trousseau and a red and white display featuring RCMP artifacts, several flags and photographs.
