Inside

Despite fairly fickle summer weather, City of Camrose crews and outside contactors have made great strides this year improving streets and avenues in the community.

To Camrose Homes To Rural Homes Tues. Thurs. With Booster This Week’s Flyers:

Some of the work completed in recent weeks has been “carry-over” projects from last year. Other patching and repaving is a reflection of the commitment by the Mayor, Council and Management to invest $30 million averaged over the next ten years in order to improve our local roadways. Most notable this year is the resurfacing of much of Camrose Drive, the new pavement on 50 Avenue in the area of the Library, upgrading 48 Avenue approaching Highway 26, and a replacement of the asphalt on a portion of 53 Street north of Mirror Lake. In addition to this, hundreds of potholes have been filled since spring. This summer the City has launched a new initiative, albeit it on an experimental basis. Asphalt millings from the recent resurfacing work have been spread on 50 Street heading south to the local landfill. It is hoped that this material might be an effective resource in keeping this busy roadway in better operational condition and allow diminished or complete reduction of calcium, which has been liberally used in the past to keep vehicle dust under control.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Won’t last long

This week I had a delightful phone call with a 92-yearold reader. He told me a story about the first issue of The Camrose Booster, back in November 1952. He remembers standing with Jack Ferris, owner of Ferris Motors, when my dad, Bill Fowler, walked across the street and handed him the first issue of The Camrose Booster. They chatted for a few minutes and then my dad

walked away. After my dad left, Jack turned to the man who told me the story and said, “A paper that you give away? There’s a business that won’t last long.” That was 63 years and nine months ago. The Camrose Booster appears to be alive and well. *** The same reader also told me stories of the early days of what is now The Bethany Group. Originally, Bethany’s facility for older people was in Bawlf, operated by the Lutheran Church. When the Bethany facility moved to Camrose, the man I spoke with remembers that every year, his father and a couple of other men would spend a few days cutting wood for Bethany. Yes, the kitchen staff cooked on wood-burning stoves. As he spoke, I was trying to imagine cooking for that many people on a wood-burning stove, and was also struck by how the community pitched in to make sure the facility had what it needed to do what it did. *** Here in Western Canada, we tend to think 100 years is a long time. We bulldoze buildings after a few decades. During my first trip to Eastern Canada, in Ottawa I was amazed to see buildings that were more than 100 years old. In Old Montreal, I saw buildings older than that. In a museum, I was blown away looking at a letter that General Wolfe wrote to his wife on the night before he died in 1759, more than 200 years before. That trip changed my concept of “new” and “old.” Eastern Canada was nothing compared to visiting Europe. In a Swiss village, visiting relatives, we attended the family church. The “new roof” dated back 300 years (about twice as old as Canada) and the church itself was built in the 600s – not 600 years ago, but the year 600! What amazes me is not just that the church is still standing. It’s still in use every day. In the same village, aqueducts built by the Romans are still in use because they still work. Now that’s “built to last.” One of my strongest impressions in Europe is the sense of history alive and well and walking around on the same streets as current people. The past is always present. That must make a difference in how people think and feel and make decisions. *** I read that in 1976, when Americans were celebrating the two hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, someone in the Chinese government was asked what he thought of the American experiment with a new form of government. The Chinese person replied that it was too soon to tell – it had only been a few hundred years. That would be the voice of someone with a few thousand years of history. *** A few years ago, I had the privilege of visiting a fossil bed discovered by a friend, a science teacher in Grande Prairie. I held in my hand dinosaur fossils that were about 65 million years old (give or take a few million years). He said, “It does something to you to hold something that’s 65 million years old.” He was right. I looked at the fossil and couldn’t remember whatever I was distressed about recently. I also remembered that dinosaurs who apparently ruled the earth at one time are now extinct. *** Nothing lasts forever. But taking a longer view helps put the present in perspective. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. No transparency

I always hear about transparency in government. I don’t think that applies to Camrose municipal government though - I guess they’re an entity on their own, which I think is wrong. I didn’t know about the ski hill, the water bills being transferred to the landlord, the barricades on special neighborhoods (who do they know to get the special treatment), land development by infilling or any other issues affecting our community until someone wrote about it in the paper. I’m very concerned about this trend - after all council is to answer to us - they work for us and I don’t think we are getting our money’s worth. Remember that at election time. Cheryl Grundberg, Camrose Farmers’ Market

This is going to come across as sour grapes, but the only sour note is the lack of balance and fairness in this situation. I am speaking of the two markets running on Thursdays. According to the Alberta Farmers’ Market Association, all farmers’ markets are tourist attractions to the communities in which they reside. Everyone can see

that an open air market would be quite the draw. But does it warrant what seems to be favouritism (my choice word) on behalf of City Hall and others? Before I explain this comment, let me first say thank you to all the venders and customers of the Rose City Farmers’ Market running out of Duggan Mall. You are such a loyal and dedicated group. The fact that we are a yearround market means that the other market will not run us out of business. Rose City is, however, facing extreme odds in serving the citizens of Camrose and area. Let me explain. The downtown market doesn’t seem to have to follow the same rules and regulations with regards to the signage on public property as we non-profit organizations. It also seems that a blind eye is turned towards some of their practices. Rose City Farmers’ Market has submitted a formal letter of complaint about these to the City as well as a copy to the police. The odds are tipped in their favour again with this very publication. Please do not misunderstand me; Rose City Farmers’ Market advertises with the Camrose Booster, and Sue (along with the rest of the advertising department) does a marvelous job for us. The reality lies in the fact that the downtown market has received, in the past seven months, more articles, pictures, etc. than Rose City has in the past 13 years. A prime example is the invitation to the Booster (in writing) to attend our 10th Anniversary. We received nothing. No reporter, no photographer and no printing of story with pictures submitted to this paper. Let’s cap this off with the full colour, full page advertisement the downtown market received with the front page

of the Aug. 2 Booster following a City-granted 10 plus hour market they ran July 28. In comparison, the Rose City Farmers’ Market submitted a five inch two column coloured advertisement plus a boxed announcement in the classifieds in the July 26 Booster and for that privilege we paid over $300. Does any of this seem right to you? Lori Blades, Camrose Editor’s Note: The Camrose Booster takes pride in our serious and dedicated effort to provide fair and balanced coverage to the community. Non-profit groups and associations, and the corporate community alike, regularly benefit from our commitment to comprehensive, competent and always popular news features and photography. It is worth noting that each of the Farmers’ Markets at Duggan Mall have had an impressive, perhaps enviable level, of free Booster news coverage over many years. In March of both 2015 and 2016, we dedicated a free full page of space where we profiled the appealing local Farmers’ Market concept and lengthy service to the community. In addition, free full front page exposure on our publications has also been granted many times, including: Sept. 6, 2011, Aug. 13, 2013 and Sept. 9, 2014. In the spirit of being an on-going supporter of Camrose, we will continue to watch for additional opportunities to provide coverage to all Farmers’ Markets including the Rose City group of small businesses.

New library programs bridge gaps By Dan Jensen

Spontaneity at its finest

The water looked enticingly cool and my heart thumped loudly at the thought of leaping off the dock to the chilly depths below. My husband had performed the task for the kids and it was my turn. To the chants of “Do it! Do it! Do it!” I ran off the dock and into the blue. We recently returned from 10 days of camping, canoeing, biking and backpacking and had a wonderful holiday. My daughter experienced her first overnight backpacking trip to a mountain scene with “too many waterfalls to count”. We spent a drizzly afternoon making up our own nature plays at a beautiful log amphitheatre (my favourite was pretending to be a tree shocked to discover little beavers nibbling at my trunk, causing me to fall over). A few of our days were pretty action-packed: canoe trips in the morning where we looked down into the lake to find jackfish and tadpoles swimming right below and families of geese on the lake banks; then an afternoon of swimming and sand castle building at beaches; then evenings of interpretive programs where we cooked bannock over an open fire, learned that cougars have a 285 degree field of vision and owls can swivel their heads three-quarters of a turn. Fun days, but they weren’t the most relaxing times. Looking back, it was the moments that were unscripted, unplanned and spontaneous that were some of my fondest of the trip. We arrived at one campground late in the day and headed over to check out the playground. My husband brought a ball and taught the kids how to play ball tag on the playground equipment. They literally shrieked with excitement as they chased each other with the bright yellow ball. I sat on the sand with my two-year-old, feeling the heat of the sun, and smiled at the innocence of the moment. Then I jumped into the game, and showed the kids some of my ninja moves. We hadn’t planned out every detail of that afternoon, but it was spontaneous and perfect. Another afternoon we found ourselves in a little cove that was part of a larger lake. The water was warmer there, the foothills serene as the backdrop, and we had the place almost to ourselves. The water was crystal clear down to the bottom, and I swam out and perched on a large rock, flexing my feet up and down. I just felt so relaxed, this uncoiling in my system from the stresses of everyday life. On our last night, we found ourselves camped right beside a lake where we swam and played at the playground in the afternoon. After supper, we took a trail down through the trees to the water’s edge and started to skip rocks. Again, totally unplanned and unscripted. I showed the kids what kind of rock to look for, how to hold their fingers, how to stand, the angle the stone should hit the water. After several attempts, my daughter’s entire face lit up as she proclaimed she had done it! The rock skipped three times! Her body was transformed with new confidence and excitement over a gained skill. I pocketed a few of the deep orange rocks as mementos of the night. It made me think about how to bring more spontaneity into our lives at home. A bannock roast in the backyard? More impromptu dance parties or visits to the splash park? Last minute trips to get ice cream cones? Or maybe more evenings on the deck with a good book in hand. If the best part of a holiday is the spontaneous parts, perhaps in life in general the best parts are things that happen spontaneously. The next day I began what are, in my opinion, the worst parts of a holiday: unpacking and laundry. I came across the orange rocks, now dry and not as vibrant. They looked plain. Ordinary. But the moment had been anything but plain and ordinary. Maybe that’s the key to a memorable holiday; taking something plain and ordinary and transforming it into something magical.

Two new summer programs at Camrose Public Library are helping to bridge the gap between the generations. Reading Buddies runs from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, while Babies to Boomers goes from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays. “The programs were just started this year so there has been a bit of trial and error,” said library employee Kelsey Mailer. “We have had quite a few kids, which has been awesome, but it has been harder to get the adults and the seniors. We are hoping that will change over the next few weeks.” Reading Buddies is designed to help children get excited about reading and develop friendships with community members who are not their own age. Story telling sessions featuring a guest reader are followed by games and activities like making bookmarks and the chance for children to spend some time with an adult or mid level reader with a book of their own choosing. “We had the mayor of Camrose come in one time to do some reading, which the kids thought was great,” said Mailer. Through their interaction with adults, children can see that reading is something that happens at all stages of life and that, in the end, people are all pretty much the same. “The interaction helps break down a lot of the stereotypes and barriers that are already existing in our society between the generations,” said Mailer. “There are definitely some stereotypes, so when you can bridge those gaps you can break those down and, in the long run, create a stronger community. One little girl has been paired with the same lady in Reading Buddies for quite a while. They have created

a good friendship, which is really nice to see.” In the first week of the program children wrote words of encouragement on cards they had decorated (love letters) and placed them in books throughout the library for people to find at a later time. “The people who borrow the books will get a nice surprise when they find these letters,” said Mailer. “I kept some the cards back for the times that we do outreach to seniors who are in lodges or care facilities, just to create that connection between the children and seniors.” While Babies to Boomers is related more to activities than it is to reading, the idea of creating intergenerational connections is the same. Over the coming weeks and until the program ends Aug. 18, children will have the opportunity to do a craft with the Battle River Quilters’ Guild, learn a few old time dances with the Wild Rose Dance Club, and enjoy a story telling session with Bill Harder. On July 27, children made their own drums and learned about the rhythms with Alberta Health Services school health facilitator Carol Breitkreutz. Another time children created an intergenerational bulletin board in which they listed their hopes and dreams for the future on cut out stars. “We traced everyone’s hands and had them reaching towards the stars,” said Mailer. The programs have been a major hit with Heather Howe’s three children, ages eight, five and three, who can’t wait for the next time they go to the library. “There are always so many activities and different things to which they normally might not have much access,” said Howe. “The last time they drew pictures for stories that the seniors had told. Today was a drum circle, which was a nice surprise

BABIES TO BOOMERS

because music transcends all ages. The chance to spend time with people who are not their own age gives the children the opportunity to make connections in the community and realize that just because a person is older doesn’t mean they can’t be a friend with that person.” Howe also likes the fact that the library is an environment in which her children can feel safe. “When they feel safe they can have fun,” she said. “If they are not in a specific program they play building blocks somewhere, or go on the computer for a while waiting for the next one to start. We have been coming here every single day.” Reading Buddies and Babies to Boomers are based on the underlying premise that children and adults are segregated from each other and that by bringing them together we can create a more caring society. “When you look at it, the children are in school, adults are working and seniors are in the apartment complexes or care facilities,” said Mailer. “We really don’t have a very good mixing of generations. Unless it is in your own family you don’t know a lot of people outside your own generation or associate with them very much. Some children might not even have a grandparent figure in their lives because of distance and travel.” Based on the comments that have been provided, adults are very excited about interacting with the children. “I have had a lot of people tell me it is a cool program and that they enjoy getting involved with the children in their reading and play,” said Mailer. More information on the intergenerational programs and what is being offered in the coming weeks may be obtained by calling Camrose Public Library at 780672-4214.

Kyle Pantaleon and Elle Rehmann had the opportunity to make and then play their own drums.

The Battle River Community Foundation assisted the Rose City Residential Support Society with a grant for programs. The grant is made from income from the Foundation’s Community Fund. Grants from this fund are awarded by the Foundation Board to charities in the region who apply for assistance with projects and programs. This particular grant will assist with the cost of providing one meal a day to participating residents of Sparling Manor in Camrose. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support initiatives, such as this, in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects

and organizations. Note that the deadline for applications for grants in the 2016 granting cycle is Aug. 15. An application form may be obtained at www.brcf.ca or by calling the BRCF Office at 780-679-0449. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4 million to support community facilities and programs such as those offered by the Rose City Residential Support Society.

…a special summer feature In Camrose and area a significant number of women hold positions of power and prestige. Many others own their own small businesses or are key players in their respective companies. The Camrose Booster is profiling some of the best, the brightest and the most prominent women who work, employ and lead in the community of which we are all so proud. Watch for profiles in summer issues of the home team paper! If you would like to be a part of our next women in business issue, please call The Booster, 780.672.3142 and ask for Mike, Jeff, Sue or Ron.

Marj started working in the home design and décor business over 30 years ago. She quickly found she had a passion, and a knack for helping others create their dream spaces. Along the way she received her interior decoration designation, and seven years ago she started her own company. “The most important thing,” Marj emphatically states, “is to decorate the space to suit the clients’ tastes. This is their space and they have to love it. It’s easy to put together a perfectly coordinated color scheme, but if it’s not what your client likes it doesn’t matter. Everyone has different styles and it’s imperative to keep that in mind throughout the entire process.” Whether you’re doing a full renovation or new build, or one room in your home or office, Marj can take care of everything and, with numerous satisfied clients and many referrals, it’s obvious she puts her clients first. Before doing anything, Marj meets with her clients to determine their color preferences, tastes and what kind of function and feel they wish their space to have. Then she works with them every step of the way, from paint selection, flooring and window coverings, to sourcing furniture and artwork, and the placement of all items. She also keeps extremely flexible hours, so she is able to meet with clients on evenings or weekends. And the last few years, she’s noticed an extra benefit to those flexible hours. She’s finding she’s able to spend ample time with her five precious granddaughters!

Kathy Helgeland, Owner Sure Exposure

A growing success story Nine years ago, as the mom of three handsome young men, Kathy Helgeland noticed her sons were driving to Edmonton to buy jeans, maybe a hoodie or a tee shirt. Back home they would come, happy they were able to find something they enjoyed wearing. Kathy got an idea. She opened a store in Duggan Mall to provide young men with the clothes they like. She brought in Buffalo, Hurley, Burton, Volcom, Oakley. Word spread quickly of this new store that carried all the current brands. Young men came and liked what they saw. The wives and girlfriends also came and starting buying stuff for their guys. Now Kathy’s store has grown to offer clothes for men, women and children.

Ardelle Kerr,Co-owner, Quilting From the Heart Kathleen Riggins,Co-owner, The Sewing Center The mother/daughter team of Ardelle Kerr, Quilting From the Heart and Kathleen Riggins, The Sewing Center might well rate as two of the most accomplished and busiest people in the local corporate community. Ardelle’s mother passed down her love of sewing on the family farm near Amisk. This led to a U of Ed. degree in Education and Ardelle subsequently teaching Home Economics at the high school level. In the evenings she often taught adults the art of simple or complex sewing techniques. Over the years, students routinely asked Ardelle about quilting and she then taught many courses and classes. Tens of thousands of hours later, Ardelle and Roger Kerr opened their store – Quilting From the Heart. She spells out her retail concept simply with heartfelt words: “It’s a place for fun and creativity. It’s a place where, among friends, we create beautiful things.” Ardelle continues to learn and teach her skills – her most recent addition to her much-admired resume – leading classes at Sparrow Studios, Edmonton, a noted industry supplier. Kathleen, brings to their now combined main street quilting/sewing shop a U of A Bachelor of Commerce Degree, plus a year’s experience working at a busy quilting shop in England! With tremendous knowledge of machines’ capabilities, how to repair them when necessary, and the patience and skill to teach others the hobby, Kathleen and her husband Rocky team up to provide their respective skills to a wide audience. She

writes a weekly quilting blog followed by people far and wide. Kathleen has earned a continentntinentwide reputation for her creativity and competence in quilting. In fact, she is now under contract ntract to some of the world’s leading fabric, quilting ting and machine companies to share her uniquee skill. She has produced designs and actual quilts for select, high-powered industry executives. And, d, in recent months, a real treat: Kathleen was presented with one of the world’s most elaborate quilting machines, featuring the absolute latest technology. Her most st recent achievements: Recognition for the he best long-arm quilt at the 2016 Centrall Alberta Quilt Show; a future opportunity ity to teach down in Georgia and at present nt the talented business couple is in Australia where Kathleen is passing on her skills to an eager group of hobbyists and professionals.

Alice Marguerite Cross of Kelsey passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, July 29, 2016 at the age of 77 years. Alice was born to Stanley and Ruby Henry in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. She grew up there on a farm with her three siblings. Alice married Ernie Cross in 1956 and they celebrated their 60th wedding Anniversary in June of this year. They moved to Alberta, living in Bawlf for awhile, and eventually moving to the Cross farm east of Kelsey where they lived and raised their family. She was a hardworking, selfless and loving mother, wife and neighbor who cared for her family above all else. She always thought of others and rarely came for a visit without bringing a bag of veggies, a dozen eggs, a homemade angel food cake or, for the grandkids, a jar of homemade dill pickles! She grew the family’s vegetables, raised chickens for eggs and meat, turkeys for special occasions and worked tirelessly on the farm with Ernie. Her favorite times were spent in her garden, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending church with neighbor and closest friend, Anne Gregorwich, and visiting with neighbors. She worked at the old Bethany Long Term Care Centre when her children were small and most recently for the Edmonton Journal until retiring in 2004. She worked for the Journal for over ten years. Alice had the opportunity to meet many people while working for the Journal and made several good friends. After she retired, she had more time to tinker in her greenhouse, growing flowers which decorated her yard and bloomed in splendor every year! She shared this love for gardening with all of her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed participating in the annual Camrose Horticultural Show, entering veggies and flowers in the various categories and encouraging all the kids to participate too. She would be beaming when the kids brought home ribbons and cash prizes! Some of her prize produce was even honored with pictures in the local paper. Alice will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her loving husband Ernie; her children Carol (Jack) Westergard of Camrose, Brenda Wilson of Camrose, Marion (Arnold) Jacobson of Didsbury, Randy (Miranda) of Camrose, John (Christine) of Daysland, Cindy (Lyndon) Skjaveland of Ferintosh, Allyson (Dana) Braybrook of Bruderheim, and honorary daughter Tomoko Hara of Kyoto, Japan; her grandchildren Jean (Clint) Heinish and Stephen Westergard, Brad (Jenn) Sieben, Janelle (Rob) McTavish and Michael (Amanda) Sieben, Kristi (Mark) Pearson and Darren (Leanne) Jacobson, Karina, Jenna and Daniel Cross, Ryan, Ashley and Alicia Cross, Starla (Shayne) Andres, Rachel (Tyson) Wiebe and Leikny Skjaveland, Zachary Twigge, Vanessa and Hayden Braybrook and Karin Hara; her great-grandchildren Dustin and Jesse Heinish, Kara and Owen Westergard, Alyssa and Blake Sieben, Harper McTavish, Andrew and Cadel Pearson, Layla Jacobson and Rowan Wiebe; sisters Muriel Cooper and Arlene Stach; and sister- in-law Shirley Henry. Alice was predeceased by her parents; her brother Clarence Henry; and parents-in-law Andrew and Florence Cross. Lois Elizabeth Gillespie

Honoring your loved one’s memory

November 25, 1930 ~ August 1, 2016 Lois was born in Lamont, Alberta, on November 25, 1930 to her parents Martin and Ella Christensen. Very early in her life, her family moved to Camrose which was home for her as she grew up and went to school. She graduated from Camrose High School (now Charlie Killam) and went to work for Calgary Power in 1948. She worked for them for five years until November of 1953 when she married Don Gillespie. The first two years at Holden, Lois did work outside of the home, but when their family began to come along in September of 1955 when Pat was born, Lois stayed home to look after her. When their daughter Barb was born in 1958 with some special needs, Lois got involved with Camrose and District Association for the Mentally Handicapped and served as their president for a period of time. Lois was also very involved with Barb in her schooling and spent a lot of time with her at Burgess School until Barb was able to go into the V.R.R.I. program and their group home in Calgary. Now, Barb is living on her own with a supportive roommate in Calgary. Lois was also very skilled with her hands, doing a lot of sewing and knitting. When her children were young, a lot of their clothes were the product of Lois’ labours. She also liked to do petit point pictures. Lois, like Don, loved camping. “Let’s just pack up and go!” She enjoyed travelling and seeing new sights, having new experiences. Like her husband, Lois also enjoyed fishing and gardening – activities that would take them outdoors and closer to nature. The fishing was special because they were outdoors and, even though they were often not successful in their catch, the pleasure was in being out there trying. Lois was a great reader. Reading light novels was an enjoyable pastime for her. She was very content to curl up with a good book for a few hours. She also enjoyed curling in a number of communities where they lived. But, most important of all for Lois, was her family – her husband and her children. Retirement gave Lois and Don time to be and do things together, including visiting their daughters. The family is remembered in our thoughts and prayers today … her husband Don; daughter Barb of Calgary; daughter Pat and her children Tamara (Tammi), Daniel (Dan), and Brandi of North Dakota. Lois was predeceased by her parents; brother Bill Christensen; and sister Jean Clarke. A funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 8, 2016 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. If friends and family so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Battle River Community Foundation or to the charity of one’s choice. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Big Valley Jamboree organizers are keeping mum on the headliners for the 25th anniversary festival in 2017. “We have chosen not to make any announcements,” said Panhandle Productions general manager Mike Anderson July 31. “We will be making our announcement in the middle of October. We want to build up the anticipation.” The 2016 version of Big Valley Jamboree ended with an inspired performance by Carrie Underwood, one of the true queens of country music. Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley was the headliner on Friday night, while Country Music Association 2012 entertainer of the year Blake Shelton was the headliner Saturday. “The entertainment was great,” said John Molund who, along with his wife, Sharon, came down from Edmonton. “There isn’t anything about it that has made us not want to come back. I really enjoyed Doc Walker at the kickoff on Thursday because they are pretty close to where I grew up at Portage La Prairie.” The only drawback was the damp and cool weather, which had many fans seeking shelter or looking for warmer clothing. “We made sure before we came to bring our rain gear,” said Molund. “When you prepare for the weather you are doing a little better than those who don’t.” They had a lake-sized pond in beside their trailer, but chose to keep a positive attitude. “Our spot was kind of dry in relative terms,” said Molund. “On the bright side, nobody was camped beside us on that side so we had a bit more privacy.” The Jamboree also received positive comments from Don Butler, who has made it a regular part of his summer since 2003. “It’s been a great event for my family,” said the Edmonton resident. “We took a year off to go to a bike rally in North Dakota one year, but we felt bad about it because we were clashing with tradition.” The number of tickets sold for BVJ was reportedly the most ever. “We were pretty happy with the attendance and how everything went,” said Anderson. “There was a bit more congestion because people weren’t able to roam quite as freely (due to the puddles).” A storm late Saturday afternoon had organizers holding their collective breath hoping for the best. “We were starting to prepare for the worst, but continually the weather was getting better and better,” said Anderson. “The meteorologist said there would be no rain by eight so we got a full show.” Camrose Regional Exhibition chief executive officer Tom Gerling said the weather presented a few challenges,

but none that couldn’t be overcome. “The ground can only hold so much water before it becomes a mudfest. All things considered, the site held up well. Our teams worked really well to keep everything as good as we possibly could keep it.” Cindy Brooks McLaughlin, who operated Brooks & Bling, said while her hat sales were hampered by the rain, she did well with sales of warm clothing. “Business has definitely been affected. People will tend to stay in their campers more, rush out to see the entertainers when they come on, and then head back to their campers where it is dry and warm.” Brooks McLaughlin was pleased with the attendance at the Jamboree considering that the attendance at the Calgary Stampede this year was down considerably. “We were gearing up for a smaller crowd,” she said, “and were pleasantly surprised when it was bigger.” The cleanup of the Big Valley Jamboree site by the approximate 250 volunteers began almost immediately after the final performance. The Molunds decided to join many others and leave Sunday night with the hope of beating the traffic jams on Monday morning. Tow trucks and tractors were on standby Monday to help extricate the trailers and smaller vehicles stuck in the mud. Big Valley Jamboree has a huge impact on the Camrose, provincial and federal economy. A report by Economic Research Limited for Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation has indicated that more than $5.8 million in tax revenue is seen by all three level of governments combined, with the federal government receiving more than $3 million. The report also showed that of the 21,912 fans who attended the Jamboree in 2011, more than

Police officers patrolling the Big Valley Jamboree site made 35 arrests over the course of the four day festival, down from the 36 arrests made at the 2015 Big Valley Jamboree. “Generally I thought it went very well,” said Camrose Police Service deputy chief Lee Foreman. “I am pleased to say we didn’t have any use of force incidents during the entire event, which means no one resisted arrest or was uncooperative with us.” While there were no significantly serious offences like sexual assaults or assault with a weapon, there were three common assaults and one assault causing bodily harm, which was the result of a domestic situation in the campground. Fifteen of the arrests were for severe intoxication, while four were for driving while impaired. One of the impaired drivers who stole a vehicle from another campsite was charged with theft as well as having a blood alcohol count of more than .08. Police normally go out of their way at the Jamboree to avoid arresting individuals who are intoxicated. “If we can get someone else to look after them and take them back to their campsite, we certainly try to facilitate that,” said Foreman. “We try everything that we can to avoid having to babysit these people in our cell blocks, but there are some that are simply to the point that they don’t have the wherewithal to locate their friends or where they are camped. In those cases, we have no choice but to hold them until their heads are a little clearer.” Camrose Police Service had the assistance of police services from Edmonton, Calgary, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. “Edmonton Police Service gave us notice this year that they would be giving us a reduced number of staff and would no longer be assisting us in the future, so we reached out to the other large municipal police services,” said Foreman. “Counting us then, there were five different police services on hand. It worked out quite well because we wanted the other new police agencies to get an idea of how the event ran while we still had our Edmonton policing partners. We found it helped and we are hoping it will pay off next year because they (other partners) will have more of an idea of what is taking place.” Police didn’t run as many check stops as in previous years. “We have a good return rate for a lot of the campers and they are aware now that we do that,” said Foreman. “We didn’t have too many people trying to leave in the morning that were inebriated.”

Walking in heels to show support despite some discomfort By Lori Larsen A group of gallant men of Camrose once again came together donning high heeled red shoes, this year undertaking the daunting task of walking the 2016 Big Valley Jamboree Kick Off parade in support of the Walk A Mile campaign and the Camrose Women’s Shelter. Forty-four men participated in the event, who, along with players from the Camrose Kodiaks, marched alongside representatives of the Camrose Women’s Shelter raising awareness about domestic violence. “I think this was a great event this year,” said Camrose Women’s Shelter executive director Nora-Lee Rear. “Moving it outside definitely changed the impact that it had because we were able to reach a larger audience.” Despite being offered the opportunity to change from the high heeled shoes to flatter more comfortable shoes, none of the men chose to do so.

“It was very overwhelming to see all of those men turn out and stand up against domestic violence and be determined to walk that entire length of the parade. I think it was great,” said Rear. Thus far donations from the event have totaled $19,000 with all proceeds going towards the Camrose Women’s Shelter. As stated on the website, the Camrose Women’s Shelter mission is that of a non-profit organization which exists to assist individuals and families experiencing the effects of family violence to work towards a lifestyle free of abuse. For more information on the Women’s Shelter visit camrosewomenshelter.org/. The Walk a Mile campaign is an internationally known organization that promotes men marching to bring awareness to and stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence in communities throughout the world.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Dozens of thoughtful and gutsy men walked the parade route in high heeled red shoes all to show their support of the Walk a Mile and the Camrose Women’s Shelter. City of Camrose Planning and Development director Aaron Leckie managed to wave to the crowd despite the slippery road conditions and lack of experience in high heels.

Smoking bylaw changed to include other public places By Lori Larsen

The City of Camrose administration requested direction from council on revising the Smoke Free bylaw 2877-16 to include stronger provisions respecting smoking in public places and workplaces during the July 18 Committee of Whole meeting. The proposed bylaw is based on the City of Red Deer’s Smoke Free Bylaw. The revisions to the bylaw would include; smoking (and vaping) are prohibited in the following places: bingo establishments, casinos, drinking establishments, grandstands, outdoor public events, patios, private clubs, public buildings, public transportation vehicles, restaurants, sidewalk cafes, workplaces, and within 10 metres of a playground, seasonal skating rink, skate park, sports field, water spray park or toboggan hill. The definition of smoking includes the carrying or possession of a lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe, or other lighted or heated smoking equipment used to smoke or vaporize any tobacco or non-tobacco substance. “The intention was to look after the areas our vulnerable sector occupy,”explained City of Camrose Police Chief Darrell Kambeitz. “That includes playgrounds, toboggan hills and those type of areas. Those

are very clearly defined in this bylaw. “Prior to this it wasn’t prohibited; a person could take his or her children to the toboggan hill and smoke in that vicinity, in front of all the other children that were there.” Councillor Bill Sears inquired as to the affect the bylaw will have on public events such as the Jaywalkers’ Jamboree, Farmers’ Market and BVJ. “Most of the other public venues that we have such as Jaywalkers’ and farmers’ markets are controlled in the existing provincial legislation (Provincial and Territorial Smoke-Free Legislation Alberta),” said Kambeitz. “There has been a lot of good research into this bylaw. Some of the definitions we’ve explored from our point of view and they are very concise, clear and enforceable for the Community Peace Officer and all the other officers. “I am speaking in favour of this bylaw and I do not anticipate significant public reaction to it. Most people are already very conscientious about where they smoke and for a few that are not, we are giving them some very clear guidelines to avoid conflict.” Councillor Max Lindstrand questioned Chief Kambeitz about the particu-

lar alley off the Composite High School. “Is there anything we can do about that to make that a smoke-free alley, or can you pick one alley and make that smoke-free.” In his response Chief Kambeitz stated,” It would be very difficult for us to pick on a specific area of the city unless we prohibit smoking in all areas and I don’t think we can take it away from every area. We have made some great strides in that particular area. I know there is still some conflict with some of the residents there but we are making some progress and we will continue to work on it.” For more specific information on the Provincial and Territorial Smoke-Free Legislation Alberta visit www.nsraadnf.ca/cms/file/files/all_ jurisdictions_Mar_2012(1).pdf During the Aug. 2 regular council meeting administration proposed a change to Subsection 4.2 of the SmokeFree Bylaw 2877-16 to exclude outdoor public events that are held for more than one day as larger events such as the Big Valley Jamboree have designated smoking areas and leaving the bylaw as it was would have prohibited it. A motion was carried to give first reading to Bylaw 2877-16 Smoke-Free Bylaw including the change to Subsection 4.2.

SASKATOON PIE

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Residents of Camrose were treated to a sweet contest on July 23 at Duggan Mall during the Rose City Farmers’ Market, when eight entries in the annual Saskatoon Pie Contest were plated, judged and ultimately sampled in order to determine a winner of the Judged and People’s Choice Awards. After the official judging was completed the public were invited to try samples of the pies and cast their own votes for the People’s Choice Award. Top photo, after a short deliberation by the official judges and the public votes were in, two winners were selected out of the eight entries. The winner of the People’s Choice was Ryan Lindsay with pie number four and the winner of the Judge’s Choice was Leslie Olson with pie number five. Bottom photo, judging the entries for the annual Saskatoon Pie Contest was no small feat but judges left to right, Randal Nickel executive director Student Life at University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Dan Macpherson sales and marketing manager - Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino, Jennifer Routhier, general manager Stockmen’s Chophouse, and Constable Kelly Bauer Camrose Police Service appeared to be enjoying the task at hand.

Bailey Theatre introduces Calendar Club By Murray Green

Donating to the Bailey Theatre has been made easier. Members of the Bailey Theatre Society introduced the Calendar Club to salute those who donate yearly to the non-profit society. The Bailey Theatre has been in operation as a restored historic live performance venue on the Main Street of Camrose for five years. Carman Mason, David Roth and Dan Olafson of the society are looking for people to join the Calendar Club to support the theatre. The Bailey launched a sustaining donor campaign called the Calendar Club. The idea is to ask many donors to commit to $100 a year (or more) on a certain month on an annual basis. The initial goal is to find 200 donors in 2016, hopefully increasing to 500 within three years. “Some of the original funding from the MacInnis Family Foundation has been available during this time to help us through our growing pains, but those funds are now depleted,” said Roth. “We often receive generous unsolicited donations that have been very helpful to keep paying our bills, but it is difficult to plan ahead when we do not have a source of predictable funding. We are a Not for Profit Society and we do not receive any municipal funding for operations.” People are invited to commit to a regular yearly donation of $100 or more on the same set month each year, to offset operating costs at the Bailey Theatre. A donor board has been mounted on the wall facing the front door in the main lobby of the Bailey Theatre with an engraved plaque recognizing each donor and the year the donations begin. Bronze plaques will acknowledge annual donations of $100, silver for donations of $200 and gold for donations of $300 or more. Donations are eligible for a charitable tax receipt and donors will have their names engraved on the Calendar Club display in the Bailey Theatre lobby. The intention is that these donations will give dependable, yearly sources of revenue to the not-for-profit Bailey Theatre. Continued on page 17

Pour the olive oil into a large bowl or container. Toss the potatoes liberally in the olive oil, making sure to get it in between the slices. Arrange the potatoes on a foil-lined baking sheet, cut side up. Sprinkle with smashed peppercorn salt to taste, making sure to season in between the slices. Bake for 30 minutes until the edges begin to turn golden brown. If desired, remove the potatoes, sprinkle with cheese, and bake for another 15-20 minutes until fully tender and golden brown. Adjust seasoning to taste, sprinkle with fresh chives for garnish, and serve with sour cream. Serves four.

Mulder’s 17 strikeouts on the night set a team record. Back in 2011, Cory Martz fanned 14 batters in a game. Mulder pitched seven innings, while allowing one run on one hit and one walk. Camrose scored three runs in the second inning

and then added three more in the fourth to take control of the game. The way Mulder was pitching, two runs would have been enough. Mulder helped his own cause by collecting two hits at the plate. Shawn Noble and Kris Kushnerick also belted two hits each. Kushnerick drove in three RBI’s, while Mulder had two. Camrose has to have help from other teams if they want to garner the last playoff position this year.

For the second straight year it is the Rosalind Athletics and Armena Royals in the Powerline Baseball League finals. In the opening game of the final series, Rosalind came away with a 9-6 victory. The script was similar last year as Rosalind won the first game before Armena fought back with two wins in a row to claim the title. If a third game is needed this year, it will be played on Aug. 9 in Armena starting at 7 p.m. The Rosalind Athletics defeated the Ryley Rebels 6-4 and 5-0 in the best of three series to move onto the finals. In the other semi-final series, the Armena Royals shut out Beaumont 4-0 in the opening game, but the Angels fought back with a 9-7 victory in the second game. Armena won a close 7-6 contest in a third and deciding game on July 28. The annual all-star game is slated for Harry Andreassen Field in Camrose on Aug. 11. It will feature the Battle River League all-stars against the Powerline Baseball League top players.

Dodge Ram EcoDiesel Best in class fuel economy By Murray Green

The 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 at Camrose Chrysler enjoys the highest customer loyalty of any full-size pickup. “It offers numerous bestin-class advantages, exclusive features, durability and an unfailing commitment to innovation,” said Camrose Chrysler sales consultant Noel Skoglund. The Ram 1500 delivers unflinching capability with three powerful and capable engines. “The class-exclusive 3.0 litre EcoDiesel delivers bestin-class fuel economy as efficient as 8.0 litres per 100 km and impressive low-end torque that’s also best-inclass,” added Skoglund. The engine also delivers 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft of torque. The 3.6 litre Pentastar V6, a three time winner of Ward’s 10 Best Engines, uses just 9.3 litres per 100 km highway while producing 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. The legendary 5.7 litre HEMI V8 with 395 horsepower and up to 4,826 kg of towing capacity is a leader in strength and durability. “Ram 1500’s standard Electronic Stability Control system features Trailer Sway Control which helps stabilize the vehicle against crosswinds and the buffeting from large truck trailers,” explained Skoglund. “The tow/haul mode varies the shift patterns to adapt performance for ideal towing.” Other available features such as the active-level fourcorner air suspension system, the integrated hitch receiver with four- and seven-pin wiring harness, and the responsive electronic trailer brake controller were engineered specifically to help contribute to greater towing confidence and control. The integrated switch brake that is intuitively located on the centre stack and manages a host of standard and available towing and interior features, including trailer brake controller, ESC system, tow/haul mode, heat and ventilation for seats, heated steering wheel and model of

the fourcorner air s u s p e n s io n system. This available system offers five separate modes of operation, keeping your Ram 1500 at the ideal level, maintaining a constant driving profile and ideal headlamp-to-road angle, even while under the heaviest payloads. Off-road 2 mode provides impressive ground clearance for the path and trail and generous angles for approach, departure and breakover. Off-road 1 mode provides outstanding ride balance with an extra degree of clearance when off-road scenarios are less severe than Off-road 2 requirements. Normal ride height offers the most comfortable balance

of ride and handling for everyday driving. Aero mode automatically lowers the vehicle, reducing aerodynamic drag and body roll and improving fuel efficiency. Entry/Exit mode automatically lowers the vehicle for easier entry/exit, loading/ unloading, and trailer hooking/unhooking. The class-exclusive multilink coil spring rear suspension is standard on most Ram 1500 models. It’s so durable and comfortable, it’s the preferred technology for railroad

coaches and boxcars. The suspension supplies more lateral stiffness and greater vehicle control, and adds to what is an already supremely comfortable ride. The Borg Warner transfer case, standard on Ram ST, SLT, Outdoorsman and Rebel 4x4 models is ideal for off-road, farm, industrial and leisure activities. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.
