David Raymond (D.R.) Francoeur will be honored as a community founder of Camrose this weekend. D.R. was a widely respected, astute and influential businessman, so successful that he was able to give a business and home to each of his five children! He offered loans to area farmers in cases where banks couldn’t or wouldn’t. A noted community supporter, he served as the Exalted Ruler of the Camrose Elks Lodge, the chapter which he founded in the community. Elected to town council in 1931, he served as Deputy Mayor and sat on most important municipal committees. D.R. Francoeur also gets credited with paving Main Street Camrose, although some good naturedly joked that this improvement to the community was a little self-serving. After all, new pavement was oily and D.R. owned a dry cleaning shop! Other stories of David Raymond Francoeur and his legendary accomplishments will be shared at the Founders Day Festival. Activities start Friday and continue throughout the weekend.

D.R. Francoeur began a legacy of success in Camrose Lori Larsen Most Camrosians will be very familiar with the name Francoeur as not only a prominent family in the area but the name behind several successful businesses. But what many may not be aware of is that David Raymond (D.R.) Francoeur, one of the original founders of Camrose, swathed a path for Camrose to become the thriving city and agricultural hub that it is today. In 1911 D.R., as he was known by many, arrived in Camrose with $400 and a vision to make his fortune in the somewhat unchartered land of Alberta. He settled in Camrose and began operating as a farm equipment agent. “He (D.R.) came here from Quebec in 1911, but I think he was out here before that. Then his brother came out and they started Francoeur Brothers,” said David Francoeur (D.R.’s namesake and great grandson), from the Knaut Johnson Francoeur law firm. “Then he (D.R.) brought his family out here. His brother (Fernand) went back to Quebec in the 30s.” In 1918 D.R.’s father, Joseph Louis Francoeur, a stone mason by trade, helped to build what is known as the Francoeur home, located on 48 Street in Camrose, which is now owned by David (Jr.). “He (great-great grandfather) did the fountains, all the stone work and the sunken garden,” said David. D.R. eventually purchased the home from his brother, Fernand. “D.R. gave a business and a house to all (five) of his children,” added David. “The Francoeur house was a

wedding gift to my grandparents, who were also given Francoeur Cleaners.” Francoeur businesses and buildings are embedded in Camrose history and to this day are not only landmarks, but the locations of thriving businesses. David detailed some of the history of these businesses. K n aut Joh n son Francoeur law firm has been conducting business for 105 years, making it the oldest business in Camrose, located at 4925-51 Street. Alberta Machinery
(Francoeur Brothers) has been in business in Camrose for 103 years and was originally located on the east side of 47 Street. It moved to the corner of 49 Street and 50 Avenue, and then again to the industrial area of Camrose. Francoeur Cleaners Ltd., has been conducting business in Camrose for 82 years. It is presently run by Brian Francoeur, D.R.’s grandson, and is now located at 4902-51 Street. D.R’s contributions to Camrose went far beyond the businesses he started with a
notable impact on the farmers in the surrounding area, especially during the 30s. “He gave loans out to the farmers when the banks wouldn’t,” said David. D.R. was elected to town council in 1931, serving as deputy mayor. He sat on the finance, police, bylaw, sanitation and public works committees. “He is also known for the paving of main street,” said David. “My Auntie Marie said people thought he did it deliberately, because pavement in those days was kind of oily and people would get it on their clothes, then they would have to take their clothes to Francoeur Cleaners.” D.R. was also one of the founding members of the Camrose Elks Lodge and served as the Exalted Ruler in 1939. D.R. was undeniably a smart businessman and, when asked what lessons have been passed down from generation to generation, David responded. “All Francoeurs learned business and work ethic, how to do business and how to get involved in the community and contribute to its growth.” David shared a financial statement of Alberta Machinery (Francoeur Brothers) from 1928, showing an approximate net worth of $84,000 – back then a tremendous amount of money. Comparable to today that would barely be enough to purchase a piece of farm machinery. Behind every great visionary, community leader and business icon are always
relatable stories about the person, and D.R. was no exception. “He loved his cars, specifically a big Chrysler Imperial. He was known as the man with the cigar and big car and he would drive crazy fast,” smiled David. “He would go speeding down the back alley from Alberta Machinery. “The grandchildren would be playing behind my house (Francoeur House on 48 Street). My dad and his sisters and brothers would see him coming and yell, ‘Here comes Grandpa – run!’ Then they would leave the alley on their bikes because Grandpa would be flying by on his way to his house for lunch, right across the highway at a hundred miles per hour.” In June, within nine days of each other, D.R.s last two remaining children Marie (Francoeur) Dabbs and Paul Francoeur passed away and residents of Camrose bid farewell to the second generation in a double funeral service. David Francoeur (Junior) was born in Camrose as a fifth generation Camrosian and his three children are now part of the sixth generation. Despite some time away to complete his studies and pursue a career overseas, the pull to Camrose was strong and David is now settled and making his own mark on Camrose. David Raymond (D.R.) Francoeur will be honoured as Camrose’s 2016 Community Founder during the Founders Days Festival at the Ceremony and Founder Reception on Friday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m., at the Bailey Theatre.
Wrapping up the summer program with Camrose wildlife By Lori Larsen
The City of Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Summer Program wrapped up another year of informative events with a presentation by wildlife coordinator Katherine Rogers on Thursday, Aug. 4. Rogers spoke about the species most familiar to Camrose, the plight of the caribou in Canada, wolf culling, and the National and Provincial parks. She finished the evening sharing her experiences working for the City as the wildlife coordinator. “The main theme we tried to use this summer was how to connect to nature,” said Rogers. “To finish off I want to tell you a little bit about the wildlife in Camrose and how to engage with it in a fun way,” Some of the wildlife species Rogers said are seen in Camrose include deer, coyotes, bats, beavers, muskrats, swans and a variety of birds. When speaking about a possible coyote sighting, Rogers suggested some tips to protect your own safety and the safety of the coyote. “Don’t run away because that might excite the coyote;

yell at it in an angry voice to scare it off, clean up after yourself in parks and your backyard, and don’t let your pets outside.” Rogers also explained how beavers are considered pests around Camrose and that traps have been set in the Stoney Creek area to assist in controlling the beaver population and the potential hazards they create to the surrounding area. “You will see around the Stoney Creek area signs that
say please keep your animal on a leash, there are beaver traps in the area.” Rogers remarked on the variety of birds in Camrose and the value the Purple Martin program, with its volunteer landlords, has on wildlife conservation. “This summer I counted 84 purple martins in Camrose; those are mating pairs. “If you count Camrose and the surrounding farms and parks there are 195 pairs and in 2003 there were only
eight pairs. This is an example of how putting time into conservation shows results. You are helping an animal and helping it get back to a population it needs to be at to be healthy. “We are very thankful for the work of volunteers and City workers for helping out with this program.” In conclusion Rogers offered suggestions on how residents can connect to wildlife including naturescaping, geocaching, writing poetry or stories, photography, meditation, bird watching and visiting national parks, which she noted will be free of charge starting 2017. “I feel that this summer has shown the many diverse ways to get involved with the environment,” said Rogers, “There is also a strong element of spirituality in our connections with the environment. As humans, we need the environment to thrive. More importantly, the environment needs us to make changes so that it can thrive. There is no wrong way to connect to the environment – it is all about what works best for you. And it may take some time to find your way of con-
necting, but if you are patient I can assure you that you will create a meaningful relationship with nature.” For more information on the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society visit www. camrose.ca/168/WildlifeGreenspace-Stewardship.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Wildlife coordinator Katherine Rogers receives a warm thank you for all the work she did this summer with the Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Summer Program from Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society chairperson Glen Hvenegaard during the final event held on Aug. 4 at Stoney Creek Centre.

Public speaks out on redistricting By Lori Larsen
Several members of the public and residents of the surrounding neighbourhood once again expressed their concerns about the proposed redistricting of Lot 15 Block 23, (4825-54 Street) and Lot 16 Block 23 (4823-54 Street) from R2 mixed use residential to R4 high density residential during a public commentary held at the regular City council meeting on Aug. 2. The first to speak was Barry Green, a neighbouring resident. Green informed council he had a 300 signature petition opposing the redistricting of the lots, despite the fact that a Land Use Bylaw can not be petitioned. As well Green presented a 45 signature request to council to commit to an Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP) which, in his words, is essential to prevent unpredictable rezoning and create a development vision for mature neighbourhoods such as that of 54 Street. Green criticized Fieldstone and the handling of the entire proposal of development. “From the beginning, I felt, Fieldstone has consistently dropped the ball on this project. “They could never list the true dimensions of the building and, until six days ago, no one had made any effort to contact us (neighbours) and give us any information on the project. They still aren’t sure about heights.” Referring to the presentation made by Alair Homes, representing Fieldstone Developments, during the
Committee of Whole meeting on July 18, Green addressed what he said were myths proposed by Alair representatives regarding the revitalization of the downtown and the project neighbourhood. “The downtown is doing quite well on its own,” said Green. “A lot of these shops are specialty shops, unique shops, and people will go there regardless of where they live. They are not going to move downtown just because of the shops. “As far as revitalization of our neighbourhood, I have taken each and every one of you through that neighbourhood and shown you all the work the people have done in renovations. By ourselves we have revitalized a great deal of that neighbourhood. “The other point is regarding the high density issue. If you are truly concerned about high density I have shown you three alternative locations. I know the developer is not going to develop them but they are much better places,” said Green. “The people are overwhelmingly against this. Council has to make many difficult decisions that may be unpopular but are needed for the betterment of the community; this is not one of them. I ask council to stop this once and for all, listen to the petitions, and represent and protect us as our democratic representatives.” Other members of the community expressed their concerns with some of the information shared by the Alair Homes representative during the July 18 Committee of Whole meeting.
“For the company (Alair Homes) to compare Toronto, Ontario and Denver, Colorado, USA, to what is going on here is ridiculous,” said Bev Servold. Holly Lassesen, resident of the property directly behind the lots in question, spoke on her concerns about the proposed project. “My concerns involve the fact that the last time we met here council requested that the developer take responsibility to contact the community and be more transparent with their project proposal.” Lassesen indicated that did not occur. Lassesen also voiced concerns over the lack of exact dimensions provided by the developer, the issue of replacing trees between the proposed building and adjacent properties in order to provide lost privacy, the size of the parking spaces and the potential of 33 vehicles entering and exiting the proposed building through the alley backing her property. “It’s a very narrow alley. It is very clearly irresponsible planning if you think 33 cars can come in and out of this alley every day.” Lassesen also stated she was not against densification. “Working within the framework of the existing zoning could still fulfill the goal of densification without unreasonably congesting the area. My guess is that this is to maximize profits for the developer, who obviously has no concern or respect for the people of our neighbourhood. Continued on page 7

“I can say with some certainty that had the developer been more forthright perhaps he would not have been met with such friction by the community because we could have had better communication.” Twylene Hicks also spoke
about some of the information provided by the representative of Alair Homes during the July 18 presentation. “Our neighbourhood’s high quality, safety and cleanliness and our vested interest in our community were called into question. “We spent nearly two
hours with that representative listening to his arguments and looking at the drawings and renderings and nothing in those renderings or drawings or the last minute token contact indicated this developer has any interest in working with this neighbourhood.”

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson What feeds your soul? Recently, I spent an entire afternoon in a Japanese garden. As soon as I stepped through the gates I could feel myself relaxing (and I didn’t know I wasn’t relaxed). A sense of peace descended as I walked the paths and took in the greenery, the rocks, the water, the quiet. I sat for a long time in one of the resting places, enjoyed when someone would sound the deep gong, and just took it in. ***
When I returned home, I felt peaceful and simultaneously energized. I thought, “That fed my soul,” which got me thinking about what feeds the soul. Here are some things that feed my soul. What feeds yours? ***
Being outdoors or in nature. I think of moments on a mountain summit, or in a deep forest, or by a waterfall, or seeing ocean to the horizon, when I also felt that sense of peace, awe and being energized. ***
I also remember times when I was puttering in a garden and realized that I’d lost all sense of time. As I stood up, I was a bit stiff and achy from crouching (forgot to stretch now and then), covered with rose bush scratches and mosquito bites, wondering if my fingernails (and the rest of me!) would ever be clean again – and gloriously happy. For me, gardening and being outdoors are good for the soul. ***
Beauty. Beauty in nature, beauty of art, beauty of interior design, beauty of music or any other beautiful sensory experience – any form of beauty is good for the soul. ***
Connection with others. Times of feeling deeply connected with other people, times of deep mutual authenticity and honesty, shared integrity – those times of deep connection, with or without words, are good for the soul. ***
Flow. Recently a colleague and I were working on a report and we both got into a zone of creativity. We were sparking off one another. Both of us felt totally appreciated and supported by the other. Insights poured in; we thought thoughts that hadn’t occurred to us before. By the end of that long intense day we were both tired but energized and uplifted. I think things that are good for the soul contribute to that state of “flow” and “flow” is certainly good for the soul! ***
Service. One of my mom’s favourite quotes was from Dr. David Livingstone, a scholar and musician who devoted much of his adult life to providing medical services in Africa. He once said in a speech to a graduating class, “I do not know what your destiny will be but this much I know. The only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have sought and found a way to be of service.” ***
I can think of many times when individuals or groups worked on tasks that would ordinarily be unpleasant, and felt great because they knew they were being of service. ***
Inner connection. Times when I’m still and quiet, connected with deep inner wisdom and also feeling part of something bigger than myself, are good for my soul. I especially like it when I can take that consciousness, and operate from it in my regular day-to-day world. ***
Meaning and Purpose. I’ve heard a story about someone in the Middle Ages asking three bricklayers what they were doing. One said, “I’m putting bricks on top of one another.” One said, “I’m building a wall.” One said, “I’m building a cathedral to the glory of God.” The same activity can be mind-numbing or good for the soul, depending on what meaning we attach to it. ***
This leads to two obvious questions: What feeds your soul? How do you weave some soul-nourishing into every day? I’d love to hear. Send me an e-mail at bonnie@bonniehutchinson.com and I will reply. ***

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. MLA conversation Just recently I had the opportunity to speak to our new MLA for Camrose area and his assistant. After this conversation, I’m having trouble believing he’s qualified for the role. I asked why they were shutting down all the coal mines in the province. I asked if they had ever driven down Hwy. 36 past Sheerness. I mentioned that it is not possible to see even a whiff of smoke coming out of the stack. The assistant replied that there still is pollution from our coal, and it is significant. My reply was that most of the world’s pollution likely comes from places other than Canada, including India and China. Mr. Hinkley said China and India were starting to clean up their pollution, also. I said, “No disrespect meant to anyone, but our premier seems to be somewhat of a dictator and she is making some very bad decisions”. In response to my question about the carbon tax that is coming in, Mr. Hinkley’s reply was that it was only 4 or 4.5 cents per litre, which people were used to in the fluctuating gas prices and people wouldn’t even notice it. I also asked him why they always blamed the previous government for everything they find wrong. I said if there is a problem, fix it. Don’t complain about previous governments. The Liberals are notorious for the same public relations stunt federally. I told Mr. Hinkley what we really need is to have qualified business people in the government so it could be run like a business. Mr. Hinkley said, and I quote: “You cannot run a government like a business. Business runs to try and make a successful living, hire people and serve the community. Some make it and some don’t.” I told Mr. Hinkley I was
73-years-old and still had to work because I didn’t know if I had enough savings to last me with all the new taxes that are being imposed. I think it is very sad that we have a number of MLAs that got a paycheque all their lives and didn’t really know where it came from as long as it was there on payday. A lot of people have had jobs or businesses and worked hard to make a living and pay taxes which helped pay the wages for those people who didn’t really know where the money came from. And a final note to the NDP party – you were not voted in. The previous government was voted out. Marvin Despas, Camrose News coverage Thank you for printing my letter in its entirety in the Aug. 9 Booster. I’ve received an incredible amount of positive feedback. Also, thanks for providing the copies of the articles and front pages you indicated in the “Editor’s Note” following my letter. However, upon review of the copies, it has become evident that I will be sticking with my stance about coverage in this publication for the Rose City Farmers’ Market. The two “Farmers’ Market” articles in March of 2015 and 2016 are 100 per cent about the Camrose and District Farmers’ Market which runs Saturdays. The front page of the Sept. 9, 2014 issue is also all about the Saturday market with nothing to do with the Rose City Farmers’ Market. The other two front pages (Sept. 6, 2011; Aug. 13, 2013) feature pictures of venders from the Rose City Farmer’s Market with only one of them correctly captioned for that market. However, the write up below talks about the Thursday and Saturday markets operating in Camrose. It further underlines the misconception in the community that these two markets are the same, just run on different days in the Duggan Mall. Couldn’t be further from the truth, and once again, the Rose City Farmers’ Market is not the focal point. I must also point out that the reference at the end of the “Notes” that Rose City as a “group of small businesses” is a misnomer. Rose City Farmer’s market is a registered and
approved Farmers’ Market which is the only way we can use the wording in our name. I do retract one item in my original letter – Rose City Farmers’ Market is only 12 years old, not 13 as stated. My apologies for the gaff. You may have gathered I am pretty passionate about my market and can get carried away. For your informationRose City Farmers’ Market is still waiting for a response from the City on our letter of complaint. Apparently, the person who is to deal with these issues is away. If the gong show with the traffic and 49 Avenue on Aug. 11 at 3:30 p.m. is any indication, the Camrose City police aren’t taking the situation there seriously either. The road was not barricaded as they are supposed to wait until 4 p.m., but the venders were attempting to set up, which blocked the road. Non-market traffic was still trying to use the avenue and having to back out into the intersections because of the blockages. Not a very safe situation. Speaking of legalities, here is a question for all you legal pundits out there: whose liability is it if the air sock on 48 Avenue causes an accident or injury to persons or property, either directly or indirectly? Is it the Downtown Camrose Market, which owns and operates the sign? Is it the 7/11 gas bar, which allows it on its property? Or is it the City, for not enforcing the regulation about signage deemed potentially hazardous to pedestrians or vehicles? Just wondering. Lori Blades, Camrose Editor’s note Many years ago an example of the wisdom of The Camrose Booster editor and company founder, the late Berdie Fowler, came into play with a lifelong lesson. We were having an end-of-workday discussion on American presidential election politics. She expressed being appalled at the way candidates of the day were attempting to attract votes though attack advertising. (Donald Trump clearly missed the meeting). She offered timeless advice, which ironically comes into mind in formulating this editor’s note: when you want people to buy into your goals or your vision kill them with kindness. It’s a far easier route to success than beating up on them until they say “uncle.”

TORN BASIL, HEIRLOOM TOMATO AND MOZZARELLA FRESCA SALAD
Bridget
• 6 cups baby arugula, washed, spun dry Vinesation • 2 cups of sliced heirloom tomatoes Owner • 1/3 cup freshly torn basil leaves • 1/2 small red onion, very thinly sliced • 1/2 pound mozzarella fresca, thinly sliced or bocconcini sliced in half • 1/2 cup Vinesation extra virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons Vinesation Sicilian Lemon Balsamic Vinegar • 2 tablespoons Vinesation Apricot Whitee Balsamic Vinegar • 1 teaspoon salt • Freshly ground pepper to taste Combine the white vinegars in a small bowl and place the red onions in the bowl to quickly ‘pickle’ for 5 minutes or up to 10 minutes. The vinegar will turn a light shade of pink. Remove the onions and reserve. Whisk the mustard and salt into the vinegar. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil, whisking briskly and constantly to create a semi-emulsion. Just before serving dress the baby arugula with just a few drizzles of the vinaigrette. Arrange the dressed arugula in layer in a shallow, wide bowl or platter. Add the pickled onions, sliced tomatoes, cheese and torn basil leaves over the top. Add a few more drizzles of the vinaigrette and fresh cracked pepper to taste. Serve immediately with crusty bread to mop up any dressing left on the platter/bowls.

Drivers are being asked to slow down when approaching road construction workers. By Dan Jensen
Camrose drivers are being urged to be alert and take extra precautions when passing through construction zones this summer. “I’ve seen a few close calls in construction zones caused by driver error,” said City of Camrose superintendent of roads and right of way Ray Leiren. “Drivers have gone around barricades and wound up in places they are not supposed to be.” Camrose Police Service Constable Adam Belanger said most Camrose drivers obey construction zone speed limits and are careful when they are passing workers. “Except for the transition zones on the east and west ends of the city the speed limit is 60 km or lower, so when you are setting up construction zones it is easier for people in Camrose to slow down. We don’t have the freeways like they do in Edmonton, where drivers who are used to travelling at 100 km/h have to slow down to 60.” Drivers who go too fast through construction zones run the risk of encountering loose gravel, fresh oil, uneven pavement, trenches that can cause them to lose control of their vehicles and swerve into other traffic, workers operating heavy equipment or acting as flag persons. Camrose Police Service ran a successful education campaign on construction zone safety last summer when work was proceeding on the rail line for the canola crushing plant east of the city. “We had people who weren’t paying attention to the speed zones,” said Belanger. “The posted limit was 60 km/h and we were seeing people humming through there at 100. We tried to give as many breaks as we could but there were still quite a few tickets issued, especially the first couple of days. The most concerning thing to me was people saying they didn’t see the speed zone reduction sign. I thought that people would have noticed the large equipment in the area and put two and two together.” According to the Partners in Road Construction Safety
(PIRCS), more than 900 collisions and millions of dollars in property damage occur every year on road and utility construction zones in Alberta. PIRCS statistics show that 53 per cent of drivers pass through construction zones at speeds one to 10 km/h over the limit, compared to 32 per cent who pass through at speeds 11 to 20 km/h over the limit, 10 per cent at speeds 21 to 30 km/h over the limit, three per cent at speeds 31 to 40 km/h over the limit, and two per cent at more than 40 km/h over the limit. Constable Belanger knows what it is like for workers to be out on the road while vehicles are whizzing past. “I have been there and it is scary,” he said. “People are supposed to slow down to 60 km/hour when they are passing emergency vehicles and tow trucks, but every once in a while they forget.” The fine for driving through a construction zone one to 15 km/h above the limit ranges from $156 to $241 and two demerits, an amount that goes up to between $280 and $478 and three demerits for exceeding the limit by 16 to 30 km/h and between $506 and $949 and four demerits for exceeding the limit by 31 to 50 km/h. The fine for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h in a construction zone is six demerits and a mandatory court appearance. A new campaign by PIRCS this summer is asking drivers in Alberta to pledge to make roadside construction zones safer for everyone by driving the posted limit and paying attention to all hazards, whether workers are present or not. “When you vow to slow down and drive safely in construction zones you’re letting others know some things are more important than getting somewhere a few minutes faster,” says the PIRCS vow to slow down website. “Protect yourself, your property and other people on the road. The Partners in Road Construction Safety will be thanking drivers like you all summer long.” Drivers generally pass through three outer zones that are designed to create
the safest possible conditions before entering a construction zone. Zone one is an advanced warning area that tells traffic what to expect ahead, zone two is a transition area that typically moves traffic out of its normal path and advises drivers to reduce speed, and zone three is a buffer area that typically uses traffic cones and barricades that are meant to protect road workers and equipment just before the work area begins. Fleet safety operations manager Ron Wilson, who has 30 years of experience teaching traffic safety, advises drivers to check road reports ahead of time and use an alternate route if possible, use extra caution when approaching a construction zone, avoid changing lanes, be ready for sudden stops, and be ready day or night as road construction can happen at any time and doesn’t just occur in the daytime hours. “Vehicles ahead of you may stop unexpectedly so keep lots of space and be prepared to stop,” said Wilson on the AMA website. “If your lane is blocked and no one is directing traffic, yield to the traffic coming from the opposite direction. When the way is clear, move carefully around the obstacle. Lastly, avoid storing papers or other items on the dashboard that can affect vision and cause distracted driving.” Leiren noted that while drivers have a responsibility to travel at safe speeds in construction zones, there is also onus on the construction company to remove the existing speed limit signs or cover them. “I see signage that doesn’t get removed at the proper time and that creates disrespect among drivers passing through a construction zone,” said Leiren. “If we do our job properly and work together with drivers they will respect what we do and are more apt to comply with our requests for reduced speed.” Leiren said while the City of Camrose 2016 road overlay program is basically complete, crews are continuing to do spray patching, tarring, grinding and pothole repair as part of the regular road maintenance program.

After immigrating to the Ohaton area in the early 1900s, five Norwegian Lutheran families from South Dakota organized themselves into the Parkland Lutheran Congregation. They began holding worship services in their homes and raising funds for the construction of the church. The congregation grew and in 1913 it was officially incorporated as the Parkland Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation. In 1930, a building committee was formed and, through the use of local labour, a basement was dug

By Lori Larsen In a manner reflective of the way church services were held years ago, Parkland Lutheran Church will be hosting a small service followed by an old-time picnic on Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. “We will have a little bit of a service and then a little update which we do inside the church so it is open for people to walk around,” said Parkland Lutheran Church committee member Brett Read. “Then we have the lunch and afterwards some games and activities for the children; it is a very family friendly event.” The speaker for this year’s service will be Pastor John Strecker-Bessler, of the Bawlf Parish. The church is located approximately 10 km east of Camrose on Highway 26, the correction line.

and a concrete foundation poured. The construction of the church progressed over the next 16 years and was eventually completed in 1946. It was dedicated in October of that year. Following the service, a barbecue with hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided, along with a dessert potluck. Anyone is welcome to attend the picnic and take the opportunity to visit the historical church which, through generous donations, has been refurbished and maintained over the years. “We have people attend who have donated in the past and we have people from the community come out and see
the work that we have done,” added Read. “This year we were able to repaint again and do a little work on the grounds. “It looks pretty good from the outside but there is still a little bit of work to do and we would like to keep it up. If we take care of it now, then nothing can become a big issue later on and the building will still be in good shape as we go forward.” In the event of inclement weather there will be a tent on site. People will be able to visit inside the church as well. The Parkland Lutheran Church Committee welcomes any donations to the maintenance and preservation of the church.

City commemorates ski jump
MIRACLE TREATS
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster People lined up at the Camrose Dairy Queen on Aug. 11 to purchase blizzard treats in support of Dairy Queen Miracle Treat Day. All proceeds from every blizzard purchased on Aug. 11 went to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Top photo: eight-year-old Isaiah Mercier, front left and his six-year-old brother, Liam, front right, took a minute from volunteering to pose with Jordyne Jacobsen, back left and Keith Badry. Bottom photo: Isaiah and Liam loaded up 10 blizzards purchased by Katherine Cripps (back) for her colleagues at the Camrose Royal Bank. As one of the patients who has received care, Isaiah knows first hand the wonderful work of the Stollery Hospital.
Submitted As a result of the demolition of the ski jump on Aug. 6 and 7, the City of Camrose has begun the process of preparing to form a committee comprised of council members, the public and administration to explore opportunities to commemorate the ski jump site (and possibly the expansion of the Stoney Creek Centre in conjunction with the development of the area). The decision to demolish the ski jump was not taken lightly and has been in progress for quite some time. City council debated what to do by weighing fiscal responsibility and concern for the safety of citizens against the desire to honour the city’s Nordic heritage. In 2015, Ryan Poole, general manager of Community Services, reported he had received 40 responses in favour of removing the ski jump, 19 in favour of keeping it and three expressing uncertainty. The Camrose Ski Club had surveyed its members and found 64.3 per cent in favour of tearing down the jump and replacing it with some sort of commemorative attraction, and 35.7 per cent in favour of keeping the existing ski jump, with the majority for refurbishing it to make it attractive. “It’s unfortunate that in the years since the jump has not been used that we have not had a group that have come for-

ward with a plan to refurbish, an interest group that could fundraise, that could develop a plan, come up with some ideas. We’ve not had that,” said councillor Agnes Hoveland. “Now we’re faced with extreme costs in refurbishing, to what purpose?” In September 2015 a group of concerned citizens asked City council to delay the decision regarding the future of the ski jump for at least nine months in order for a committee to have time to research possible future uses of the ski scaffold. That group was granted until June 20, 2016 to come up with ideas and make a pre-
sentation to council. After the group presented, council gave the public another two weeks for any other feedback before deciding to give administration authorization to proceed with tenders for the demolition. The committee will be formed to work with Community Services for proper recognition to our Nordic heritage and as a memorial that would be accessible to everyone. Details about joining the committee will be released soon. For more information, please contact Ryan Poole at the City of Camrose at email rpoole@camrose.ca or telephone 780-672-9195.
Veterinary clinic advises of tick carrying Lyme disease By Lori Larsen Tick bites have the potential to cause grave illness, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever in humans, and in some instances, pets. Dr. Jamie Whiting, of Camrose Veterinary Hospital, warns residents to be extra diligent of ticks on their pets, especially dogs, following a recent incident involving a tick removed from a dog at the clinic. In accordance with Alberta Health, Dr. Whiting submitted the tick in order to assess for Lyme disease and as part of a continual Lyme Disease and Tick Surveillance program. “This one (tick) came up positive and subsequent testing on the dog that the tick was found on ended up showing that the dog was positive, that it was exposed to the bacteria,” said Dr. Whiting. “The dog that tested positive seems to be fine and isn’t showing any signs whatsoever,” assured Dr. Whiting. “This is more of a laboratory finding then a clinical finding. Obviously we’re doing some testing on him but he seems to be fine.” Dr. Whiting explained that while the consequences of a tick bite for a human can be heavy, the majority of dogs (90 to 95 per cent) that

ease at Camrose Veterinary Hospital. Identifying Ticks
are exposed to the bacteria build antibodies and fight it off, never showing any signs. “Traditionally in the past in our area we have had an extremely low number of ticks but the incidences have been increasing over the last few years. “Because of that the Alberta government has a tick surveillance program. If somebody discovers a tick on an animal, he or she can bring it to any vet clinic and we will submit it. They (tick program) will analyze the tick and determine what kind of tick it is. If it is the Ixodes tick they will test it to see if it contains the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease. “There are a number of different types of ticks. The deer tick is the one that can carry the Lyme disease bacteria.” This was the first tick, and subsequently dog, that tested positive for Lyme dis-
A tick can be identified as an eight legged (in adult stage) arachnid with a flattened tear shaped body. Ticks do not fly or jump but rather move in a slow crawling motion. When engorged from sucking blood from the host, the tick’s body will be quite a bit larger and rounder, with a lighter greyish colour. “If you think you see one on your dog check for legs (on the tick),” advised Dr. Whiting. “That is the biggest thing to verify that it actually is a tick because sometimes a skin tag or even a nipple can look a lot like a tick. So always check to see if there are legs. The head attaches and that is where it does the sucking.” Removing the tick
Once you have identified the tick, either prior to or during gorging, immediately remove the tick and, if possible, preserve it in a container, without air holes, for submission to Alberta Health. “If the tick is engorged use tweezers to gently pull it (at the head),” explained Whiting. “Generally it will come out fairly easy but you want to try to get the whole tick if you can. You don’t want to squash it or leave the head in. If you are uncomfortable any vet clinic would be happy to help you.” The process of removing
a tick applies to both humans and animals. “If you find a tick that isn’t latched on then it hasn’t transmitted Lyme disease (if it is carrying the bacteria). The tick has to be latched on and on there for 48 hours before it has an opportunity to transmit the bacteria into the blood system,” said Whiting. If you have any questions or are concerned your pet may have a tick bite, contact your animal health care provider. Protect pets
Precautions can be taken to protect your pets (dogs) from ticks and tick bites. “Other than basic house dogs, we recommend the use of tick preventatives for dogs that are going to be out and about camping and or running through grass,” said Whiting. “Some preventative treatments are applied to the back of the dog and generally last up to one month, while other ones are chewable. There are a number of different products and they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Most people will want to talk to their animal health care provider.” Dr. Whiting indicated there are also vaccines for Lyme disease, however they are only recommended for high risk patients (animals.) The most important prevention for your pet (dog) is to
constantly check for any ticks. Protect yourself
Use an insect repellent spray that contains DEET and continue applying. When possible walk on trails and paths that have been cleared of tall grasses. Cover up as much as possible with hats, long pants, socks, shoes or boots, long sleeved shirts and, if possible, tuck pant legs into socks or boots. Walking into Cathel Books on Main Street is a book lover’s delight. The charming window display, always festively decorated with theme books, games, puzzles and giftware of the season entices shoppers. Once inside, thousands of tomes beckon shoppers to browse aisle after aisle of interesting reads. “Our customers bring in books for sale or trade on a daily basis so we always have a large variety,” notes owner Pat Westergard. We usually keep around 30,000 books in stock and strive to keep the quality like new. Bright, spotless, and very organized, the aisles of Cathel Books offer something for everyone. “Our subject matter covers all ages and interests,” says Pat. Westerns, romance, thrillers, self-help, history, humour, children’s books, and the current bestsellers are just a sample of what you find in over 60 different sections in our store. We have also expanded our product lines to include new games, puzzles, puppets, and giftware, including leather and silk journals, globes, fossils, and other unique pieces. Pat and her staff are also known for their stellar customer service. “If there’s something we don’t have, we will try to find it. We keep a list of selections our customers are looking for. I love it when we can find books on that list!” History buffs will appreciate another unique feature – the basement, which is now a shopping/reading area, used to be a bowling alley from 1921 until the early 1970’s! Pat says Cathel Books has been very well received by the community since it opened for business. “On Aug. 17 we are celebrating our 13th birthday. We welcome everyone to stop by for storewide savings of 25%!”

Christa Tkaczyk, Kitchen Designer Interiors on Main
Christa spends most of her days designing kitchens. Then she goes home after her workday and, just for fun, designs kitchens. It’s a passion. Christa is the head kitchen designer at Interiors on Main, a full-service interior design shop in downtown Camrose, and she’s very busy. She currently has several projects in various stages on the go. Why are so many people now choosing Interiors on Main? “It’s because we definitely offer a more extensive design service,” she says. “We don’t move ahead with construction until the client is completely satisfied with the design, which often requires numerous revisions. More and more people are saying they want to work with a designer to make sure they get it right.” Getting it right also includes the materials and installation. Christa, who studied interiors at the University of Alberta, has extensively toured manufacturing facilities and visited showrooms on the west coast, the home of Solera Cabinets. She is adept at reading plans, making the calculations and providing creative input so that the cabinets they design and install are not only stylish, but also highly functional. If you’re ready to start working on a new kitchen, bathroom or adding new cabinetry, passion y, call Christa today. She will put her heer pa p ssion to work for you.

Lauren Cleveland, Owner,
ONETOOTH Activewear
One Tooth Activewear Camrose opened in November of 2013 and it has been the most amazing experience – which we attribute to this community! When I was in the early stages of deciding to return to my job as a Corrections Officer in Edmonton or open the store - I was torn! It was a decision of Passion over Pension! The decision: to take a risk, or go with what I knew – but what I knew was a long commute, migraine headaches and dangerous working conditions. I could not be happier with the choice that I made. Owning a business has been the hardest, most rewarding, fulfilling (not counting having kids) thing that we have ever done. I thrive on the constant learning, ever-changing market and up-and-coming activewear fashions. I have enjoyed networking with other businesses in town, getting involved in this community and leading the staff. The team (who rock, by the way) at One Tooth Activewear is dedicated to helping every customer who comes through the door of our shop! Through this business I have met the best people around - partnerships with Camrose Academy of Dance, Crossfit Camrose and Camrose Kodiaks introducing me to awesome organizations that only enhance our business! Who could ask for more! Honestly, we feel blessed! The future looks bright! When we started the process to open our own business it seemed overwhelming. The work seemed endless. Now, I am embarking on another passion- essentially starting another business: motivational speaking and personal coaching. The options seem endless, and the rewards are worth the work! I’m so glad I made the choice not to return to a career I hated, that confined me to a uniform and dictated my decisions, my hours and ultimately my happiness!

If you’re a fan of Sears, you will be delighted to know there’s once again a Sears catalogue store in Camrose. It’s located within Audio Video Unlimited in east Camrose on Highway 13, a very convenient location with easy access. There’s lots of room in the large bay at the back of the store to accommodate orders of any size, from small packages to appliances and furniture. Overhead doors make it easy to pick up larger items. Denise Ordze is the new store’s manager and is pleasantly surprised by the reception she has received since opening the store in April. “I really enjoy it,” she says. The people who have come here are thrilled and positive and really appreciate that a Sears catalogue store is back in Camrose. If you’re ready to order something from Sears, you can work directly with Denise for friendly, personalized service or you can do it yourself online. She is finding that many people like to order in person because it is much faster than trying to navigate through Sears online. Denise is now getting ready for a busy season as the back to school catalogue is coming out mid-August and the fall catalogue later this month. The ever-popular Wish Book will be out around September 24. She receives shipments on Tuesday and Friday mornings and organizes them so that customers can pick them up right away. If you would like to order, call 780-672-2225. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
Ria Van den Berg has been an expert in the esthetics industry for over 35 years and has owned Superb Esthetics for 15 years. Growing up in Holland, one of her first parttime jobs was assisting an esthetician, and after watching and learning from her, Ria knew this was what she wanted as her career. So she attended school, taking many classes, and spent hours perfecting her trade. European trained, and a perfectionist by nature, Ria offers numerous relaxing and rejuvenating therapies. Her European facials are extremely popular. Ria notes, “ It is quite an involved facial. It deep cleans the pores, exfoliates, rejuvenates and uplifts.” In fact many of her clients report long lasting benefits from receiving regular facials. Ria also has clients that come strictly for her perfect eyebrow waxes, along with eyebrow and eyelash tinting. An array of additional treatments for the face, back, hands and feet are available, including waxing, manicures and pedicures. Ria and her husband are the parents of two grown children and have happily made Camrose their home for many years.

“Hooked” on using… Users tell us why they enjoy Camrose Now so dearly, and how the app is valuable to them. This is a sampling/cross-section of the feedback we received from a push notification contest last week.
“I just wanted to tell you how great the Camrose Now app is. It is such a great addition to our community. I have one recommendation. In the Buy & Sell section, would it be possible to have the number of days an item has been listed, as it would help gauge new items with older submissions? Perhaps this has already been explored. Thanks again for a great app!”
“I appreciate the versatility of the app. Thankful for weather notifications.”

“Meeting the special needs of your family”
Lois Shaw Lois was born in Edmonton on April 18, 1950. She was adopted by Gordon and Corrine Downey as an infant and spent the first fifteen years of her life in Vermilion. In 1965, the family relocated to Camrose. After high school, Lois worked at the York Café for a number of years. After marrying Ernie Renshaw, she lived in Hardisty and co-owned a restaurant with a friend. They adopted Robert and she gave up the restaurant. She ended up moving back to Camrose and returned to school. Then she worked as a life skills coach for Canadian Mental Health for a number of years – a career at which she excelled and loved. She worked a few different jobs and remarried during this time period. The loves of her life were her two grandchildren who she adored. In the past few years, her health deteriorated and she passed away peacefully with her brother Dale at her side in the early hours of July 28, 2016. She is survived by her son Robert; brother Dale (Lillian); grandchildren Mya and RJ; niece Dana; her biological family; and numerous friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Roy. Sharyll Gloria Yochim was born on October 8, 1948 in Unity, Saskatchewan to Roy and Kathy Kelly. There, she grew up with her two brothers and sister until 1967, at which time she moved to Camrose. Sharyll married her childhood sweetheart, Dennis Yochim, in August, 1970. Two children were born of that marriage, Reneé and Ryan. They were blessed to call Camrose home. Time with family and friends, interior decorating, travel, and her home and yard were Sharyll’s favorite pastimes. She was hardworking, generous and kind to all she met, always willing to lend a hand. Sharyll passed away suddenly on Monday, August 8, 2016 at the age of 67 years. She is survived by her loving husband Dennis; daughter Reneé (Corey) Benoit; grandchildren Desireé, Trevor and Denyka (Justin) Young; great-grandson Jase; son Ryan (Gillian) Yochim; grandchildren Isabella and Drazic; brother Ron (Karen) Kelly of North Battleford, SK; twin brother Daryll (Lorraine) Kelly of Camrose; and sister Brenda (Gary) Fairbairn of Camrose. January 25, 1933 ~ August 7, 2016 Donna Dorothy Bowes of Camrose passed away peacefully at the age of 83, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, August 7, 2016. Donna was born on January 25, 1933 to John and Dorothy MacDonald in Camrose. She resided and went to school in Rosalind where she grew up with her siblings Ronald, Marilyn, Dorlene and June. Donna married David Bowes of Camrose on January 30, 1952 at the age of 19. To this union, four children were born, Deborah, Denise, Bradley and Daniel. Donna and David resided on the Bowes family farm until 1966, and then moved into Camrose where Donna worked for the Lyseng family at their photography studio, a job she enjoyed very much. In 1976, Donna and Dave started a taxi business and then sold it four years later. After that, with their interest in the photo business, they opened a photo finishing store across from the Camrose Canadian and later moved to Main Street. They had this business for thirteen years. Donna then went to work for Value Drug where she worked until retirement. Mom was a selfless, hardworking, devoted mother. She loved her family very much and they really were her whole life. As a young mother, she was quite a seamstress, sewing matching clothes for her children out of discarded dresses and coats from her sisters. She loved her trips to Las Vegas and Reno with her sisters and brothers-in-law and daughter Deborah. She was a great co-pilot on the many horse trailering excursions with Deborah … always packing lunches and drinks because she knew some trips would be six to eight hours of steady driving. She provided conversation, advice and laughter to my life. She was truly more than a mother, she was my best friend. Mom was witty and quick to give a giggle when something struck her as funny. She was fiercely independent, so being housebound in the last couple of years was a real struggle for her. She was so appreciative of everything we did for her and would have preferred to be well enough to do it herself. She enjoyed her phone conversations with sister Marilyn, brother-inlaw Al, brother Ronald, sister-in-law Betty and her visits with her sister June. She loved the weekend visits with her son Brad, who dropped in early for coffee and to pick up the grocery lists and take out the garbage. She wouldn’t let anyone else do groceries and garbage and said, “That’s Brad’s job and he will be upset if I let someone else do it.” Miranda and Denise cooked special little meals and treats for Mom, filling her freezer on a regular basis. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Mom loved to read a good novel, providing good conversation as we all would read the same book. She did sudoku to keep her mind sharp and later enjoyed coloring books that she proudly displayed. She was very artistic. She enjoyed visits from her friends at Deer Meadows and spoke highly of Alicia and all the staff who were so kind and caring. Donna is survived by her four children Deborah (Grant) Bailey of Camrose, Denise (George) Laumbach of Wainwright, Brad (Miranda Iftody) of Camrose and Daniel (Analiza) Bowes of Malta; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother Ronald (Betty) MacDonald of Belleville, ON; and two sisters Marilyn (Al) Maiani of Calgary and June Guhle of Daysland. She was predeceased by her husband David Bowes; her sister Dorleen Horst; and brothers-in-law Ken Horst and Edward Guhle. The family would like to thank Dr. Jaroni, Dr. Genus, Cindy, Cheryl and Sara in Emergency at St. Mary’s Hospital. Thank you also to Dr. P. Sainbhee and Unit 2 nurses including Marnie, Kim and Deb. Thank you to her respiratory doctor, Dr. York, in Wetaskiwin who helped her for twelve years with her COPD. Thank you to paramedics from Wetaskiwin and Camrose, and Camrose Fire Department. Your expertise, compassion and kindness to our mother were greatly appreciated. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Lung Association, S.T.A.R.S. or to the Palliative Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Ronald Alquin Bendfeld was born on June 1, 1941, the eldest of eight children of Verner and Norma Bendfeld. Ron passed away peacefully on August 5, 2016 at the age of 75 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose after an eighteen-month battle with cancer. Ron was a farmer from the beginning. He liked nothing better than helping his dad around the family farm east of Heisler. He especially loved his dad’s horses, Silvie and Buck. In 1962, he bought a quarter of school land a mile north of Heisler, where he would spend the majority of his life. He met Bonnie James of Killam at a hockey game in Daysland in 1966, and married her three years later on August 2, 1969. They were blessed with three beautiful children – Rhonda in 1972, Tracy in 1975, and Bradley in 1977. The three of them brought Ron an abundance of happiness and pride. He spent the majority of his days outdoors, feeding pigs, tending cattle, fixing equipment or just “puttering” around the farmyard. He bled John Deere green and had a love for Fords that rivalled no other. He loved to keep busy, but also loved his afternoon naps on his recliner, mostly watching sports, especially his beloved Blue Jays! Later on, he spent many happy days with Bonnie at the family cottage at Ma-Me-O Beach, relaxing and enjoying the company. Ron’s greatest joys were his grandchildren! He loved to teach them to play baseball in the living room (much to the chagrin of Bonnie!) and snuggle with them on his recliner. He enjoyed teasing them, and they would do their best to tease him back. One of his greatest pleasures was watching them play sports – volleyball, basketball, hockey and, his absolute favourite, baseball! He will be sorely missed by them all. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 47 years, Bonnie; his children Rhonda (Murray) McLaughlin of Ponoka, Tracy Bendfeld of Camrose and Brad (Christie) Bendfeld of Daysland; and his seven grandchildren Meegan, Chloe, Jared, Liam, Kenna, Justin and Sydney. He also leaves to mourn four brothers Ed (Renie), Bob (Saundra), Dennis (DonaMae) and Bill; three sisters Pat (Ken) Lang, Glennis Bailey (Jim) and Mary Ann Bendfeld (Diane); three brothers-in-law Bill (Joanie) James, Bob (Deb) James and Bud (Tammy) James; two sisters-in-law Debbie James and Jacquie (Wade) Bonnett; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents Verner and Norma; two nephews Michael Bendfeld and Andrew Bendfeld; one brother-in-law Darwin Bailey; his father and motherin-law Sid and Ruth James; and one sister-in-law Rosalie James. A Memorial Mass was held on August 13, 2016 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Heisler, Alberta at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations in Ron’s memory may be made to STARS or Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Isabel was born on October 8, 1919 at Bawlf, Alberta, the first daughter for John and Amelia Noullett. She passed away on August 7, 2016 at the age of 96 years. She grew up in the Bawlf area and lived with her family for some time at the Keystone Ranch. Isabel attended Oak Park School. On June 22, 1942, she married Leander Lang. They were married for 53 years. Leander passed away in 1995. They first lived and worked in Camrose and, in 1951, they bought farm land at Heisler. She worked so very hard alongside Leander, milking cows, raising chickens, growing a huge beautiful garden, cooking meals, canning jars and jars of pickles, fruit and chicken. She made sure we had plenty to eat along with a clean warm home to grow up in. Isabel’s perfect buns became known as Gramma Buns! She was active in the CWL for many years. She loved playing cards and often brought home the trophy from a card tournament. She was there to guide us and encourage us in our activities, cheering for Gerry at ball games. Isabel always had good advice for Jane in her 4-H years. Isabel and Leander moved to Daysland in 1972, and she worked at Daysland Hospital from 1972 to 1984. They moved to Camrose in 1985. She was the best Gramma to her treasured grandchildren Clint, Aimee, Shane, Desiree and Dillon. She loved them and they knew it! Her great-grandchildren Keston, Katie, Christian, Annabelle, Naomi, Alessio and Airik came to visit her and her eyes would light up and she would smile and hold the babies. Along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is also survived by her son Gerry (Shirley); daughter Jane; daughter-in-law Helen; sister-in-law Angie; brother-in-law Gunner; and numerous nieces and nephews. Isabel was predeceased by her husband Leander; her parents John and Amelia; her special friend Joe; sonin-law George; her brothers Joe, Jerry, Tony, Johnny, Leo and Ed; and her sisters Margaret and Louise. A prayer service was held on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel, Camrose. A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Camrose, Alberta. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society or the Autism Society.

Dr. Archie Campbell “Cam” Jones September 19, 1937 ~ August 8, 2016 Cam was born on September 19, 1937, the second of two boys to Archie and Marguerite Jones of Calgary, Alberta. Growing up, Cam was active in sports, scouting and church activities. In 1955, Cam attended the Eighth World Scout Jamboree held at Niagaraon-the-Lake, Ontario. As a scout, Cam received the scouts’ highest honor, the Queen’s Scout Award. After completing high school, he ventured to Davenport, Iowa to start his studies at Palmer College of Chiropractic. It was while in Davenport that Cam met his future wife, Doreen Hawkins of Camrose, AB. On September 17, 1960 Cam and Doreen were married in Camrose. After a brief honeymoon, it was back to Iowa to complete their studies. Cam graduated in July 1962 with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Doreen had graduated in 1960. Moving to Camrose, Cam opened his first office above the Eaton’s building on Main Street, and later moved his office down the street to what had been the old Smith Clinic, still on Main Street. Cam continued practicing there until he retired in September 2013 after over 50 years of service. On January 5, 1987, the love of his life Doreen passed away and with her, took a piece of him. They had been married for 27 years. A new chapter in his life began when, on June 25, 1988, Cam remarried to Connie Jacobsen. With a renewed spring in his step, Cam and Connie started their life together and enjoyed it to the fullest, including moving to an acreage east of Camrose which Cam held as their little piece of Heaven on earth. At the time of Cam’s passing, they had been married for 28 years. Cam was a very social person and was heavily involved in the Camrose community for many years in many capacities with the Kinsmen, the Masons and Scouts, just to name a few, volunteering his time selflessly. He loved dancing and being outdoors and enjoyed skiing, waterskiing, motorcycle touring and travelling. He had a deep love for his family and the many friends he made easily over the years. He held a deep reverence and awe for his Creator and would often reflect this by helping complete strangers in need without question. One of his greatest joys was interacting and tending to the many patients he treated and counseled in his 50-plus years of chiropractic practice. Many of his patients were like family to him. As his health declined, he faced it bravely and almost never complained about how he was feeling. His spirit and perseverance were inspirational to all who encountered him including his doctors and nurses. Cam’s family would like to thank Dr. Awakan, the nurses of St. Mary’s Hospital Unit 2 Palliative Care, and the entire staff of the Wetaskiwin Hospital Dialysis Unit for their compassion and excellent care of Cam. Thanks to the many people who visited Cam in the hospital. These visits gave him comfort and continued to make him feel connected to the community until his passing. We are also thankful to Rev. Brian Hunter for spiritual support during this difficult time. Cam is survived by his wife Connie; Cam’s children David (Gena), Robert (Yeon-Joo), James (Arnelda) and Diane (Paul) Neff; six grandchildren; Connie’s children John (Tilly) Jacobsen, Terry (Wendy) Jacobsen and Cindy (Dean) Kroetsch; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Bruce; first wife Dr. Doreen Jones (nee Hawkins); parents Archie and Marguerite; and grandson Dong-Hyun “DJ” Jones. A memorial service celebrating Cam’s life was held on Friday, August 12, 2016 at Camrose Masonic Hall with the Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Donations in memory of Cam are gratefully accepted to the charity of your choice.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Celestine (Sally) McIntyre on August 11, 2016 at the age of 68 years. Sally will be deeply missed by her devoted husband Dan; her three sons Ben, Nathan and Justin; her sisters and brothers Bernice (Ron), Lynn (John), Larry (Annette), Don, Marion (Laurence), Vicki (Julian), Lloyd and Tim (Jody); brother-in-law Art (Linda); numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Leo and Anna; brothersin-law Larry Schell and Don Wilson; sister-in-law Lisa Sieben; and nephew-in-law Scott MacDonald. Sally was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan. She worked hard with her parents, sisters and brothers on the family farm. After she graduated from high school, she pursued her teaching career at Teachers’ College in Saskatoon. She taught in Denzil, Saskatchewan and then later in Camrose, Alberta, where she met Dan. Sally lived a happy and fulfilling life, dedicated to being a loving wife and mother. Ford Explorer Smart technology is fun By Murray Green
The 2016 Ford Explorer at Lamb Ford Sales offers even more smart technology, a new 2.3 litre EcoBoost engine and an all-new Platinum series. “It’s going to lead the way in innovation, performance and fun,” said Lamb Ford sales consultant James Larson. The 2.3 litre EcoBoost, available on the base, XLT and Limited series, delivers at least 270 horsepower and at least 300 lb.-ft. of torque. It improves highway passing times ten per cent at speeds between 100 and 110 km/h. The 2.3 litre EcoBoost benefits from technology that makes it more efficient and optimizes performance. It employs an active oil control system to optimize pressure when less fluid is needed. An active waste gate controls boost more precisely during light load operation to help save fuel. A higher compression ratio results in more efficient fuel combustion. The standard 3.5 litre V6 engine for base, XLT and Limited models offers an estimated 290 horsepower and an estimated 255 lb.-ft. of torque, and is paired with a six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission. Explorer Sport and the Platinum edition get a standard 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 with an estimated 365 horsepower and

an estimated 350 lb.-ft. of torque – also mated with a six-speed SelectShift Automatic. Four-wheel drive
“Intelligent four-wheel drive continuously monitors wheel speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle to determine vehicle conditions and driver intent,” said Larson. “The system then determines the optimal amount of front and rear torque for the given conditions to prevent slip from even occurring, which helps keep the vehicle sure-footed on virtually any terrain. In sand, grass or
gravel mode, the antilock braking system changes its pulse rate, which allows material to build up in the front of the wheels, acting as a doorstop of sorts to help slow momentum.” A newly refined, intelligent four-wheel drive gauge display shows power being distributed to the rear wheels under all conditions – from heavy four-wheel drive system usage to when the system is not transmitting
power at all – for improved efficiency. For added convenience, the Terrain Management System automatically defaults to normal mode whenever the vehicle is started to ensure it is ready for normal driving conditions. Using a dial located on the centre console, you can shift on the fly, selecting one of four terrain management modes – normal, snow, sand or mud – to set how the engine, transmission, brakes and front-wheel
drive system will operate. A fifth setting is for navigating hills. Technologies
Both front and rear cameras have wide-angle lenses and come equipped with a washer, an industry first. Ultrasonic sensors and electric power assisted steering help drivers with parallel and perpendicular parking maneuvers. The system controls the steering wheel while the driver operates the accelerator and brake pedals and shifts the vehicle into gear. “The hands-free liftgate means you only need to kick your leg below the centre of the rear bumper to unlock and raise the liftgate,” added Larson. “Active grille shutters close at highway speeds to reduce drag and open at low speeds to deliver air flow to cool the powertrain.” The lane keeping system automatically detects left- and right-hand road lane markings using the front camera system. A vibration in the steering wheel alerts the driver if the vehicle begins to drift out of the lane. The system can also provide steering torque to help guide the vehicle back into the lane if needed. Auto high beams use windshield mounted cameras to automatically switch between high beam and low beam settings when oncoming traffic is detected. By Lori Larsen The City of Camrose Census 2016 results are in and the numbers indicate the city is growing. Camrose’s population stands at 18,044, up from the 2014 census of 18,038, with a total of 8,442 households. Age factor “The age of residents was fairly evenly distributed across all age brackets,” said deputy City manager Kim Isaak. Ages 65 and up account for 23 per cent of Camrose residents (respondents) while 28.8 per cent of Camrose residents are between the ages of 25 and 49. Ages 75 and over account for 11.9 per cent of Camrose’s population, with a total of 1861 respondents. “Alberta’s senior population is about 11 per cent,” explained Isaak. School population In conjunction with Battle River School Division and Elk Island School Division, respondents were asked how many residents were currently attending school, or who will be in the near future. “The schools assisted us with the cost of doing the online census,” said Isaak. The census results showed the current number of students, with a projected increase over the next three years. The public school system totalled 1,802 in 2016 with an expected increase of 309. The separate school system was 564 in 2016

City census Continued from page 28
Information source When asked what sources were used most often to obtain City information, 59 per cent of respondents indicated they use the newspaper medium, while 19 per cent said they use the City of Camrose website. Nine per cent said they use social media. Councillor Agnes Hoveland questioned Isaak about the 261 dwellings that were reported to have no contact during the census, indicating a concern that could represent 400 to 500 residents, at an average of two people per household. Isaak responded by saying, “Enumerators were to go to those homes at least three times and would have tried to contact them. We could not make any contact with those residents.” City manager Malcolm Boyd inquired about the success of the first online census in Camrose. “The online census went very well this year,” answered Isaak. “We (City) had 49.1 per cent of residences that responded online, which for our first time is a great response. The average online response should be anywhere from 35 to 45 per cent. “For subsequent years it should increase as people feel more comfortable getting online.” While the City and Camrose Public Library did offer computer services for any residents who did not have the system to complete the census online, Isaak indicated not many actually used that service. Mayor Norm Mayer questioned the number of respondents (2,410) that preferred not to answer questions regarding the school attendance. Isaak explained, “If some people just had a baby they may not be sure yet if the child will go to the public or to separate, and there are some that prefer to just answer how many people live in a household.” At the regular council meeting on Aug. 2 a motion was made and carried that the 2016 City of Camrose Census Report showing the population of Camrose being 18,044 persons as of April 1, 2016 be adopted and forwarded to Municipal Affairs. For more information and to view a complete copy of the information and results of the City of Camrose Census 2016 visit www. camrose.ca, the City website.

Kevin Sorenson, MP Battle River-Crowfoot All around our Battle River-Crowfoot constituency, throughout our province, across Canada, and around the world, we are closely watching the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As Canadians, from coast-to-coast-to-coast we are cheering for our own Canadian athletes. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and wish all of our athletes the best of luck as they take on the world. Canadian athletes are among the very best in the world and each and every one of them makes our country proud. It is an achievement in itself just to be successful enough at a sport to earn a place on our Olympic or Para-Olympic Teams. All Canadians share a wide range of emotion watching our fellow country men and women as they compete with the best in the world. In Canada, one of our traditional debates asks whether we prefer summer or winter Olympic and Para-Olympic games. The great popularity of hockey, curling, skating and skiing often ‘tips the scales’ for us in our northern climate. We can be proud that our nation’s athletes are competitive and successful when they are up against nations that have summer conditions for most of the year. The federal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as the private and not-for-profit sectors, provide programs and funding that support participation and excellence in sport. The federal government’s Canadian Sport Policy, effective from 2012 to 2022, is the common thread that brings together all levels of government in Canada, institutions and organizations that are part of our sport system. The Canadian Sport Policy sets a direction for all governing bodies to make sure sport has a positive impact on the lives of Canadians, our communities and our country. Through five broad objectives, this initiative aims to increase the number and diversity of Canadians participating in sport. The objectives include Introduction to sport: working to ensure Canadians have the fundamental skills, knowledge and attitudes to participate in organized and unorganized sport; Recreational sport: working to Client: CHRYSLER CANADA Project: AUG 2016Canadians DAA ROC RETAIL NEWSP ensure have the Docket: DAC_16_1090 opportunity to participate in Client Code: NONE sport health, social At: 100% Built At: 100% for fun, Output Scale: 1” = 1” interaction and relaxation; Trim: 7.25” X 11” V.O.: 7.25” X 11” Competitive sport: CanadiBleed: NONE Safety: NONE ans have the opportunity to Date: 8-5-2016 10:29 AM systematically improve and Artist: PREPRESS measure their performance against others in competition in a safe and ethical manner; High sport: NAA 0AA4 MAGENTA, YELLOW, performance BLACK

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Battle River Community Foundation director Mike Rodin presented a cheque for $10,000 to Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot coordinator Jaimie Griffiths and Centra Cam executive director Roxanna Skjonsberg as a grant to Centra Cam Vocational Training Association.
The Battle River Community Foundation has awarded $10,000 to Centra Cam Vocational Training Association. The grant is from income from the Arie and Leny Vanderjagt Fund and the Ellard Dilworth Fund. These funds were created to provide support for handicapped or disadvantaged people in the Battle River region. The grant supports the operation of Centra Cam’s Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot, which receives an average of 200 referrals for assistance monthly. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in East Cen-
tral Alberta, which benefit the communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4 million to support community facilities and programs.
