If you feel like you’ve been
“knee-deep” in water all summer, it’s no wonder. We have had an extraordinary amount of rainfall since mid-May. In Camrose, the official recorded amount of precipitation, from May 1st to August 29th, is 414.2 mm (16.78 inches). Contrast this to 244.8 mm (9.63 inches) during the same time period in 2015. However, the current year’s rainfall amount is low compared to areas including Edberg, Ferintosh, Bittern Lake, Round Hill and Kingman, and other spots in the trading area where, unofficially, an additional 10 inches or 250 mm of rain has poured down this growing season. Most people are ready for a moisture reprieve – but especially our farm friends who are now anxious to get on their land and commence or continue harvesting operations.

Round Hill to hold Harvest Show and Shine By Murray Green
Grab your favourite car polish to prepare for the classic vehicle fourth annual Round Hill Harvest Show and Shine on Sunday, Sept. 4. The Round Hill and District Agricultural Society is hosting its yearly event at the agricultural grounds near the ball diamonds and campground.
“The show and shine is open to all pre-90s vehicles and is in conjunction with our threshing demo. We changed to pre-90s instead of pre-80s because it allows vehicles 25 years and older to enter. A vehicle can be registered a classic after 25 years, so it made sense to include 80s vehicles. We had a lot of requests to include them
as well,” said organizer Allen Tomaszewski. “Every year our event is growing. We had 59 vehicles in our first show and 69 in the second year. It depends on the weather, but we are hoping for more this year. I remember that in our first year, I went into Round Hill and couldn’t see Main Street because it was so foggy. I

thought it was going to be a wreck, but it cleared off and it turned out to be a great day,” he recalled. Awards are presented in classic, pick-ups, rat rods, muscle cars and bone wagon categories. “The show is open and we even take works in progress,” said Allen. “The event brings a lot of people into Round Hill and it

begins with a pancake breakfast,” he added. The pancake breakfast starts the day from 9 to 11 a.m. with registration held from 9 a.m. to noon. The car show is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and door prizes will begin at 1:30 p.m. “We will have a binding, threshing and stooking demonstration. We want to show younger people how things were done in the past, and bring back memories for some of the long-time farmers,” he said. “It was so labour intensive and took days compared to the 10 minutes it takes a large combine to do the same space. This is our chance to show them what it was like.” Tomaszewski, when he was 16, was one of the last age groups to harvest with binders and threshing machines. “Both threshing and the vehicles are a thing of the past. This is an opportunity to reflect on our history in the area,” said Allen. The threshing demonstration is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. A stooking contest begins at 2 p.m. for all ages. An awards presentation will be held at 3 p.m. and several awards will be presented. “We have several organizations helping out to put the show on. In a community like Round Hill, everyone pitches in and helps to make it a success.” Refreshments and food will be available during the event. For more information on the event contact Allen at 780-672-6104.

GRANOLA
Ingredients:
Bridget
• 6 c. old-fashioned rolled oats • 1 c. cashews or almonds, pecans, walnuts Vinesation or macadamia nuts Owner • 1 c. unsweetened large flake coconut • 1 c. dried fruit (such as cherries, blueberries, dates, raisins, cranberries, etc.) • 1/2 c. chocolate chips or smarties etc. • 1/2 c. Vinesation Blood Orange, Lemon or Persian Lime Olive Oil • 1/2 c. honey • 1 tsp. vanilla extract INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat the oven to 325 F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchmentt paper. Mi Mix th the fifirstt ffour dried ingredients and spread evenly over lined baking sheet. In medium pot over low heat, or in microwave, gently warm the honey so that it becomes more fluid. Whisk the olive oil into the warm honey along with the vanilla. It won’t emulsify, but that’s alright. Evenly drizzle the honey-olive oil mixture over the oats on the baking sheet. Toss everything gently to coat as much of the oats with honey and olive oil as possible. Redistribute evenly and bake on middle rack. Every 10 minutes for about 1/2 hour, check and stir the granola; the honey and olive oil will continue to coat remainder of granola as you do this. When the granola is fragrant and golden brown, remove it from oven, stir and cool. Store in airtight container for up to 3 weeks. Makes approx. 9 cups.

BRCF names Maurers next Community Builders By Murray Green
The Battle River Community Foundation named the 2016 Community Builders at the annual open house. Director Marshall Wideman talked about the Community Builder event that is held at the Norsemen Inn each fall. “The BRCF allows everyone an opportunity to give back to worthy causes. The donors have peace of mind knowing that their dollars are going exactly where they want them to go,” said Wideman. Each year the BRCF celebrates local individuals, or couples who have lived their lives with commitment to serving their community. These well-deserving people are given the title of Community Builder and honoured at a fundraising dinner. Wideman listed the names of past Community Builders. The goal of these special
evenings is to recognize those who share the giving back philosophy that is so integral to the success of the BRCF, while raising money for worthy causes in east central Alberta. In 2015, Donna and Terry Howe were celebrated in Castor and Ken Drever was honoured in Camrose. Together the evenings raised almost $100,000. In 2016, Bonnie and Dwight Maurer will be featured in the Community Builder event in October. “Bonnie and Dwight Maurer moved to Camrose in 1985. Bonnie took over Wideman Drapery, while Dwight drove to Edmonton as a captain in the fire department. From the beginning, they were active in the community,” shared Wideman. He told BRCF supporters how the Maurers were involved in various programs. “They helped the Church of God outreach program that
was launched and was to last four months. At that time it was discovered that there were 42 homeless youth in the community,” said Wideman. “The (business) was approached to advise them to lock things up because there could be as many as 60 homeless youth wandering the city. They decided to help form a program called the Open Door and operate it above the drapery shop. In 2005, it moved to the old Smith Clinic. In 2011, the former Gardner College was purchased.” The Maurers, especially Bonnie, took an active role in forming the Open Door to provide shelter for the homeless youth. The Community Builder event will be held at the Norsemen Inn on Oct. 21 starting at 6 p.m. to honour Bonnie and Dwight Maurer.

Camrose Police Service identify POG’s By Lori Larsen Every year Camrose Police Service identifies at least three of the most concerning problems in Camrose and establishes objectives and goals to deal with, reduce and or prevent crime and victimization. These initiatives are referred to as POGs (problems, objectives, goals). “These strategies allow the Camrose Police Service to stay very proactive in the community,” said Const. John Fernhout, Camrose Police Service’s crime prevention officer. The first POG identified by the police service is offender management. “Offender management involves identifying the repeat offenders in our community, and making sure they are abiding by the conditions passed down by the court,” explained Fernhout. These conditions may include staying home when they have curfews, staying away from alcohol and drugs, and not associating with the people with whom they are not to have contact. Offender management was one of the POGs for 2015 and it proved very effective. “It is our way of keeping tabs on the people who are causing the most problems in our community,” added Const. Fernhout. The second POG on which the police service is focusing is theft of motor vehicles. Theft of motor vehicles and from motor vehicles is an increasing problem in Camrose and across Alberta. “We are advising people to lock up their vehicles and avoid leaving a spare key in the centre console,” said Fernhout. Removing the opportunity for crime is the first step in preventing crime. “People sometimes get
desperate, “explained Fernhout. “We are starting to see windows on vehicles being broken because they (the offenders) see valuable electronics or a purse inside. So it is important to keep valuables out of sight or remove them entirely. “There are some criminals who walk around all night just checking door handles, hoping for an unlocked vehicle. “There have been some nights, over the weekend, where 20 to 30 cars get broken into due to unlocked doors. It’s very important to make sure you lock up your vehicle at all times and keep your valuables out.” The third POG selected concerns the rise in problems surrounding synthetic (man made) drugs in Camrose. “Drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, and various opiates are derived from some sort of natural substance,” said Fernhout. In some cases drugs derived from plants are further manufactured in order to increase their potency. These are still unlike synthetic drugs that are completely man made and chemically based, which makes them far more dangerous and capable of quickly causing damage to people using them. The three drugs targeted by the Camrose Police Service POG initiative are methamphetamine, GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) and fentanyl. “ Met h a mphet a m i ne is highly addictive,” said Fernhout. “Some studies show if you take meth once there is a 46 per cent chance you will take it again, and if you take it twice there is a 96 per cent chance that you will become addicted. “Meth is an extremely powerful stimulant. When people are under the influence they become extremely alert and highly agitated. These
behaviors contribute to a large number of crimes in our community as these addicts are constantly thinking of ways to pay for their drugs.” Because the drug is highly addictive, anyone using it needs to find a way to financially support his or her habit (pay the dealer), which in turn can lead to the users committing property crimes such as theft from vehicles. Meth was a major concern in Camrose 10 years ago. As a result, an extensive drug task force was formed to focus on preventing the problem, largely through public awareness. This POG initiative is once again building awareness to the rising problem of meth. “I have spoken to Battle River Schools and we are setting up dates for drug presentations to teachers and parents about drug awareness”, said Fernhout. “We want to build an understanding of what these drugs are and the specific dangers involved with them.” GHB is clear, looks like water and is odourless, making it very difficult to detect. It has been referred to as the “date rape” drug because it can be easily slipped into a person’s drink without his or her knowledge. “In its pure form it is extremely concentrated and deadly,” remarked Fernhout. Because many dealers of GHB will dilute the pure form in order to sell more of the product, users (purchasing the drugs) have no way of knowing the drug’s actual concentration. A person could be putting his or her life in danger, for example, if he or she was using GHB at a concentration of 25 or even 50 per cent to sleep or deal with stress or depression, then suddenly obtained the drug from a different supplier (dealer) who manufactured the drug in its purest form (100 per cent).
The final drug, fentanyl is an extremely potent drug. “It’s a synthetic opiate and is 80 to 100 times more potent then morphine, which is used to deal with pain,” said Fernhout. Fentanyl is normally prescribed by a doctor but dealers are making it for the black market in clandestine labs in basements and out of the back of trucks. They will mix it with other drugs such as cocaine or heroine to increase the power, which results in a lot of overdoses. “The challenge for us is that these synthetic drugs are made in pill form which makes them very hard for us to detect,” said Fernhout. “As well, people (users) have this false sense of security because it is in pill form. They might assume it came from a doctor or approved manufacturer.” One hundred and fortyfive of the drug deaths reported in Alberta between January and June 2015 were linked to fentanyl. The objective for the police is to stay ahead of the problems presented by these dangerous drugs and to do everything possible to stop an epidemic. Accomplishing this is being done through the continuous work of the major crimes unit with drug investigations, awareness of the members (police) on the street, public awareness through presentations and the DARE program Camrose police continually work to ensure a safe community in every aspect of the service. Identifying these three POGs is yet another way of making that service even more successful.
BRCF presents grant to Hospice Society The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a $20,300 grant to the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. Battle River Community Foundation director Marshall Wideman presented a cheque to Stacey Strilchuk, chair and Pam Cummer, vice-chair. The grant is from income from the Bowthorpe Family Memorial Fund and the Lorne Lemay Memorial Fund, both created to support palliative care projects in the region. The grant will assist with the costs of operating the Hospice Society’s Companion Volunteer program and with the costs of assessing the need for and developing a plan for a Hospice Home in the Camrose area. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local com-
munities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principals of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted more than $4,000,000 to support community facilities and programs such as those offered through the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. Canoeing the Rideau in support of the Royal Military College By Lori Larsen
Camrose area resident Ray Hook will be taking part in a very special canoe trip up the Rideau Canal from Ottawa to Kingston, Ontario starting on Sept. 16, as part of the RMC (Royal Military College) 2016 Canoe Trip La Chasse-galerie. “I graduated from the RMC in 1971 and, as class secretary, (a volunteer position) I organize reunions every five years,” said Ray. “This fall it is our 45 reunion which is a big deal because we enter what is called the Old Brigade at the RMC.” The reunion will take place on Sept. 22 to 25 in Kingston, however prior to that Ray will partake in the La Chasse-galerie. “A friend of mine has organized trips down the Rideau in this 15 man, 35 foot Voyager canoe.” The trip in its entirety is 202 km and will take the crew seven days to complete and by Ray’s calculations takes any where from 75,000 to 90,000 paddle strokes. The crew carries supplies such as food needed for lunch and breaks on the canoe with them then disembark at night and stay in motels or bed and breakfasts. The La Chassegalerie, aptly named and loosely translated to mean flying canoe, is a French-Canadian tale based on voyagers who, through a deal with the devil,
Submitted Photo Camrosian Ray Hook, pictured fifth from the bow, during the 2011 La Chasse-galerie, will once again be making the 202 km canoe trip up the Rideau Canal as a 1971 graduate and in support of the Royal Military College.
were transported from backwoods camps to their homes on the St. Lawrence by way of the bewitched canoe. Since the year 2000 a crew consisting of cadets and excadets from the RMC decided to relive the La Chasse as a way to raise funds to support athletics at the RMC. “It is the prime fund raising vehicle for supporting the RMC,” said Ray. Between 2004 and 2014 the initiative has raised close to $250,000. “The goal of my class (‘71) is to raise $150,000 this fall to present as our gift to the college as we enter the Old Brigade of alumni,” explained Ray. Each member of the La
Chasse (15 in total) are encouraged to raise $5,000 in pledges and then acquire sponsors to match the pledges. The majority of the funds raised have gone to the Danny McLeod Athletics Fund at the RMC and are used to purchase specialized sports equipment and athletic travel. This year marks the fifth and final expedition and will be Ray’s third time paddling in the event. “Seven of the 15 paddlers are from my class,” said Ray. “We are going out in style, we are old enough and mature enough to throw the paddles over board,” he smiled speaking figuratively. The whole event exhibits a sense of pomp and ceremony
with a piper standing amidst paddlers during departure, saluting of dignitaries standing on the canal banks, a guard of honour and hundreds of cadets greeting the crew upon final disembarkment followed by the Legacy Dinner that evening. “That night (final night) there is a black tie dinner where the alumni will present their gifts,” said Ray. “Our class will present whatever we have raised.” Following the La Chassegalerie trip Ray and his wife, Elaine, will enjoy the class reunion weekend which also ends in ceremonial style with a tribute to fallen comrades at the Kingston Memorial Arch. “On the Sunday we form
up on parade square,” said Ray. “There will be all the Old Brigade members and all the other ex-cadets, probably 600 on parade. “We march through the college grounds that are lined by cadets all the way out then we go to the Memorial Arch, have a brief ceremony to recognize fallen comrades then march through the arch,” said Ray, noting the only times it is allowed is for the graduation of recruits or during an ex-cadet weekend. After the RMC class reunion Ray and Elaine will be attending the 150th anniversary of the Brockville Rifles, of which he was a commanding officer for a few years during his last command with the army, then travelling back home. When Ray isn’t travelling around the countryside he can be seen playing in the Camrose Community Band, involved in the community as a member of the Rotary Club of Camrose, golfing or enjoying Scottish dancing with Elaine. Ray currently sits at approximately $4,000 of his $5,000 pledge. If you are interested in donating to the RMC, call the Royal Military College of Canada at 613-5412-6000, or toll free 888-386-3762, extension 6807 during business hours (eastern time) and ask to speak to Jennifer Jordan.

By Lori Larsen As a way of thanking their dedicated customers the owners and staff of Camrose Fountain Tire, both locations, celebrated the 60th anniversary of Fountain Tire and doing business in Camrose since 1968, with a barbecue and a movie held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Aug. 24. East side location owner
Jason Fleck and downtown location owner Randy McCrea were on hand doling out buns and ensuring that everyone was having an enjoyable evening. Just over 400 guests were treated to barbecued burgers, hot dogs and cake and then at 7 p.m. hunkered down inside the Lougheed Centre for a special viewing of the family movie Angry Birds.
Despite threats of a thunderstorm, the weather cooperated and the night was a success. The event raised $1,000 in donations, which each Camrose Fountain Tire store met, bringing the total to $3,000. The proceeds will be donated to the Battle River Community Initiatives Foundation (for the Stollery Children’s Hospital) and The Camrose Women’s Shelter.

Yellow Fish Road program By Lori Larsen
Residents of Camrose may be noticing a yellow fish image appearing next to storm drains throughout the city. These brightly coloured symbols, along with the words Rainwater Only, have been painted by volunteers from Trout Unlimited Canada as a reminder to everyone that storm drains connect directly to our local streams, rivers and lakes and that we all need to take care in what is being put into these drains. “The Yellow Fish Road program is an educational outreach program of Trout Unlimited Canada,” said Battle River Watershed planning coordinator Sarah Skinner. “The focus is on raising awareness about storm waters in our communities and how we manage that storm water. There is a particular focus on raising awareness about the fact that the water from our streets, sidewalks and lawns, that flows into our storm drains, is not treated before it enters into our natural waterways.” In Camrose waters entering the storm drains flow directly into Stoney Creek and then into the Battle River. “The Battle River Watershed Alliance looks at the health
of the Battle River, especially related to the quality of the water in the Battle River,” added Skinner. Skinner provided a few tips to assist residents in preventing pollutants from entering natural waterways. “Be aware of what you are putting on your lawn,” she said.”People sometimes put weed killers and fertilizers on their lawn.” Skinner suggested reducing the amount of fertilizer and lawn care products or changing to products that are more environmentally friendly as well as ensuring the products are applied according to the instructions and avoiding over application. “Another area to be aware of is washing your car in your driveway,” said Skinner. “That could be a potential source of pollution.” Skinner advised residents, where possible, to use commercial car washes. “Often commercial car washes in communities have their waste water go through the waste water treatment lagoons as opposed to the storm water system. “This is one way of preventing potential pollution from the
soap or whatever you are using to wash your car.” Skinner also suggested inquiring with the car wash as to the methods used to manage their waste water. Lastly Skinner recommended not dumping any potential harmful products down storm drains. “That is the message behind Rainwater Only, we shouldn’t be dumping anything other than water down our storm drains. Skinner indicated that they (program) are finding litter, both garbage and natural, such as twigs, leaves and branches, in the storm water. “People could help out by trying to clean out their storm drains of garbage and debris as much as possible. An indicator of the impact residents can have on maintaining the health of the natural waterways is seen in the example that one drop of motor oil can make 25 litres of water undrinkable. Protect yourself from deceitful contractors during renovations By Murray Green
Fall is approaching, a time when many consumers’ thoughts turn to home renovations. Police remind homeowners to protect themselves against deceitful contractors. Home renovation fraud is one of the most common complaints received by Camrose Police Service and costs homeowners in the province hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. “Door-to-door paving contractors are frequent subjects of complaints,” said CPS crime prevention officer Const. John Fernhout. “In a typical scam, a contractor arrives at a consumer’s home without warning, claims to have leftover asphalt from another job in the area, and offers a discount for paving jobs. The quality of the asphalt and work provided is usually poor, with driveways falling apart within days. By the time consumers notice problems, the pavers have left
the area making it difficult for consumers to address problems directly.” Service Alberta’s Consumer Investigations Unit recently investigated complaints into one similar incident. Michael George MacDonald and his company, Highway Maintenance and Asphalt Repair were convicted on 44 counts under the Fair Trading Act in relation to a paving scam that primarily targeted the elderly in various rural communities across Alberta. In November 2014, MacDonald and his company were fined nearly $887,000 and ordered to make restitution of nearly $138,000. Camrose Police Service urges consumers to take the following steps to protect themselves. If a contractor wants payment up front, first make sure they are on a list of licensed and bonded businesses at servicealberta.ca or call the Consumer Contact Centre toll-free at 1-877-427-4088.
Check references and confirm the contractor’s complaint history through the local Better Business Bureau. Get at least three estimates before entering into a contract. Always get estimates and contracts in writing; make sure they include key dates, cancelation rights and a description of materials to be used. Beware of unsolicited door-to-door offers or deals from contractors who “just happen” to be in the area. “Homeowners should also consider holding back a portion of the payment, which allows them time to deal with any deficiencies and ensure suppliers have been paid,” said Const. Fernhout. “Don’t pay a large deposit to renovators for materials. Most reputable contractors maintain charge accounts with their suppliers.”

This appointment demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing seniors’ issues in the province. The Alberta Council on Aging welcomes Sheree Kwong See to her new role and is looking forward to working with Sheree and her team,” added Fred Olsen, president, Alberta Council on Aging. “I am excited for this great opportunity and am eager to get to work on behalf of Alberta seniors,” said Kwong See. Kwong See will begin her term on Sept. 1. The seniors advocate will report directly to the minister of seniors and housing and will provide the minister with an annual report, which will be tabled with the Legislative Assembly. The seniors advocate was established in 2014.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Summer favourites
summer.
As summer is winding down I’m reflecting on highlights of the past few months, and what I’ve especially enjoyed. My greatest enjoyments fall into two categories: The season itself and Live entertainment, especially drama. Here are some of my favourite things from this summer. As you read them, I hope they bring back your own favourite things about ***
The season itself. No matter what, the summer season itself always lifts my spirits. I love catching the tail end of pink and gold sunrises, early morning walks in cool fresh air, warm days, and I especially love long summer evenings. I make a point of being outside more. I love patio breakfasts, patio lunches and patio dinners. I like anything near water – lake water, river water, ocean water and pool-in-a-Japanese-garden water. Speaking of Japanese gardens, two of my favourite summer days were spent in a Japanese garden. I felt replenished for days after the beauty and serenity of the gardens. I also enjoyed being able to drive in the country several times during the height of Canola fields in bloom. Those yellow fields light up the countryside and my mood. Fresh garden food is a treat, especially since I don’t even have to do the work, just enjoy what gardeners give me. I also enjoy that everything is easier in the summer – no coats, no gloves, no boots; sandals and shorts; easy driving; leaving the windows open all night. ***
Music and entertainment, especially drama. I love outdoor music festivals – jazz, roots, blues, rock, reggae, country, folk, symphony. Of course Big Valley Jamboree is a big deal for Camrose and East Central Alberta – with thousands of visitors from all over. No matter which music festival, it makes me happy to know those musical events are going on. My personal favourite is Edmonton’s Symphony Under the Sky. Once again this year, right on cue, as the orchestra opened the first concert with Oh Canada in an arrangement written by a local composer, the Canada geese flew by in formation. I especially enjoyed drama this summer. I was delighted to learn that two friends I’ve known for many years actually like Shakespeare. (It just never came up in conversation before!) We loved our evening of Shakespeare comedy performed in an outdoor theatre. The play was brilliantly done and we laughed pretty much non-stop for a couple of hours. The same friends and I went to a totally different comedy, written by a local playwright and performed a newlyrenovated theatre. That too was an evening of non-stop laughter. Good for the soul. The third drama was an unusual improv production. Improv is weird anyway – the actors get ideas from the audience, and then make up a drama on the spot (a high stakes art!). This improv upped the weirdness factor. The two actors draw from two storytelling traditions – Cree warrior tales and Russian Jewish tales of fools – and they ask the audience to come up with a third storytelling tradition. They ask for a setting. Then they instantly create a 60-minute performance. Okay, it’s a minority group taste. I know one person on the entire planet who thought this might be fun and agreed to go with me. The improv actors accepted my friend’s suggestion that Battle River Valley be the setting. Other audience members suggested a videogame as the third story-telling tradition. It’s a performance I won’t forget – Cree warrior Russian Jewish fool Videogame heroes and villains multiple eras all cavorting in the Battle River Valley. Definitely once in a lifetime! ***
As summer winds down and we’re gearing up for fall busy-ness, I’m carrying these enjoyments into the next season – along with fresh garden vegetables. An auspicious beginning. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

The Alberta Weed Control Act specifically states which weeds are prohibited noxious, designated noxious and restricted and nuisance weeds. These weeds must be controlled by Alberta Provincial Law. The City of Camrose has numerous green space areas which are full of these weeds and haven’t been controlled. These weeds have matured to flowering stage and have produced seeds. The wind, birds and wild animals have and are transporting these seeds around our communities at this time. We noticed in the past couple of weeks after numerous complaints by taxpayers to City Hall that they have taken action on some complaints. By taking action, I mean by bringing a tractor and flail mower and mowing down the wild millet (commonly known as foxtail.) Great, this action has allowed the foxtail seeds to spread by wind and birds. It’s one of the many complaints I have heard lately from areas residents. My biggest concern is still the fire hazard the City has created near the residences by letting the grass grow and not keeping it manicured.
After all we do have a volunteer fire department where the firefighters do have other jobs and have to be called to service. You can’t blame the summer students for not recognizing these situations as they probably haven’t been informed what to look for. My brother and I planned to go to the Augustana for tea about 2 p.m. on Aug. 18. Upon arriving we noticed four city employees (weed eaters) and a city oneton truck. The view was just simply amazing, three riders in the truck and one weed eating. How many people does it take to weed a flower bed? The city management figures quite a few, because that’s what we see every time they are picking weeds and having a casual conversation. Myself, personally, I believe we are not getting what our tax dollars are paying for and therefore have started a petition against the Naturalization program the City of Camrose is running. I have received more opposition comments about this program from the people I have approached and have witnessed their signatures. The City has stated there is no evidence of rodents or snakes in these areas and no complaints, that’s not what I am being informed by the residents signing the petition. The snakes go where their food source is and that’s in the tall grass. Mice, lots of them have been reported to me. We as taxpayers are spending more money trying to implement this program than what it’s worth. Another disturbing thing that was mentioned to me was some of the pet owners are taking advantage of the Naturalization program by let-
ting their dogs defecate in the tall grass and not picking it up. Come on, there are tax payers watching. Be responsible. Since the city has sprayed herbicide along the ring road, or hired it out, now we have a real mess. Drive by and see how nice our boulevards look now. During Big Valley Jamboree many or our guests to the city were wondering what happened to Camrose. Camrose used to be such a clean city, now look at it. It can’t afford to cut the grass anymore, and the city still advertises it as being clean. Move to Camrose. I will be canvassing neighbourhoods in the near future with the petition and will be at the Duggan Mall on Saturday, Sept. 3 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. (Farmers’ Market hours) if anyone is interested in signing the petition. Hope to see you there. Rodger Banack, Camrose Attack advertising
I just have to make a comment on how disappointed I was in a comment by your editor in last weeks edition. He/ she made reference to Donald Trump missing the meeting on attracting votes through attack advertising. I am wondering if there is any difference on what Donald Trump is doing as opposed to what Hillary Clinton is doing? I see no difference–one is as bad as the other! But to me, singling one out over the other is not a very professional way to conduct yourself! Journalism should be kept neutral. Just my opinion, but it did raise the hair on the back of my neck. BRCF will be part of Canada’s 150th Community Fund project Submitted New Community Fund for Canada’s 150th builds community, inspires understanding and encourages participation for the sesquicentennial. A collaboration for Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation is bringing people and places together to build community and activate a groundswell of local initiatives, activities and events. The Community Fund for Canada’s 150th is an effort led by Community Foundations of Canada and the national network of community foundations with the support from the Government of Canada and leaders from coast to coast to coast. The Fund will engage Canadians from all walks of life in a wide range of local projects that build community, inspire a deeper understanding of Canada, and encourage participation in a wide range of initiatives that mark Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. The Fund will be responsive to local priorities and will be accessible to all Canadians, including Indigenous peoples, youth, groups that reflect our cultural diversity, and official language minority groups. Applications from community groups within the Battle River area will be accepted beginning Sept. 1. The deadline for applications is Oct. 23. “The Battle River Community Foundation is excited to see what projects the people of our area are planning to mark this important milestone in our history” said Vivianne Grue, chair of the Battle River Community Foundation. “We are happy to play our part in an important national initiative.” President of Community Foundations of Canada Ian Bird remarked on the vital roles community foundations play in building strong communities. “Canada’s 150th is an historic moment with the power to strengthen our communities and our connection to one another. Through the leadership of participating community foundations, the Community Fund for
Canada’s 150th will spark thousands of initiatives and activities that bring out the best that Canada has to offer. “The Fund will encourage all Canadians to contribute to their communities in a way that fosters a greater sense of belonging, inclusion, and reconciliation as we look to 2017 as a catalyst for community development in the years ahead.” Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage commented on the importance of the 150th celebration. “The 150th anniversary of Confederation is an opportunity for a whole generation of Canadians to come together and celebrate our accomplishments. This important step will allow us to strengthen the bonds between Canadians from all regions of the country and to build, together, a vision for our future. “The Community Fund for Canada’s 150th will let us create community projects that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come,” she added. The Community Fund for Canada’s 150th is a collaborative effort, seeded by the Government of Canada and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast. The Fund is matched and delivered locally by Canada’s 191 community foundations. For more information visit http://www. brcf.ca/ or www.communityfoundations.ca/ CFC150. BRCF’s role

All I ever really needed to know, I learned in choir By Joy-Anne Murphy
When I was young (about eight, I think), I joined the choir at my elementary school because I could sing loudly. Truth be told, I was kind of yelling, but it was heartfelt, throw-back-your-head-andholler-your-joy kind of yelling, and my teacher found something of merit in it and let me into choir. Quite frankly, I think any child who sings like that should be encouraged. None of this “just move your mouth, sweetie” nonsense! Any child who doesn’t have a hearing deficiency or vocal pathology should be able to sing on pitch - some just need more practice than others. There are so many things we can learn from singing in a choir, it still surprises me to this day that not every elementary aged child is expected to experience it for at least a couple of years. Bands and orchestras are wondrous things, but they require a certain level of proficiency or dexterity that makes them slow to gel anything truly musical at the very beginner level. Now, once the commitment is there and a group of instrumental players have some experience, that is a wondrous thing, so please don’t think I am against bands! But even instrumental
players need to know how to think and feel musically, which is where our very own built-in instrument comes into play. Long before kids are learning instruments, they should be given the chance to hear and feel what it is like to make awesome (or raucous or serene or driving) music with their own bodies. To know that they can be, that they are musical, and to feel a part of a larger whole; to understand on a gut level what “fine tuning” means, and to be part of something that moves them and others is of profound importance in shaping young people’s perspectives and skills for living. So what, exactly, are the many life lessons one might learn in choir? Timing is everything! Choirs teach you how to count, move together, breathe together, begin to create music together. There are so many layers of information being conveyed in the performance of a piece of music - often intuition is the strongest thread binding the fabric of the song. Variety is the spice of life. Every colour and volume is important or useful in the singer’s vocabulary, and one must be able to use judgment as an individual and as a group. For the singers and

listeners, it takes a wide range of styles to create and sustain interest, and a choir is a great place to explore everything from the classics to world music to Broadway hits. Discipline
Every singer can tell the story of rehearsing a piece that was not really their favourite, until one day, one rehearsal or performance, that song simply became beautiful anyway, and they were compelled to admire what they had helped to create. To know on some level what amazing accomplishments can come from sustained effort - that sometimes methodical or even tedious work can bring astonishing results - is often what brings the choral singer back. We all need something to nourish our brains toward longer attention spans in this age of instant messaging. Cognitive skills
Choral singers learn how to understand, analyze and apply symbols from their own language as well as other languages and systems. They learn how to gauge unspoken meanings, how to interpret intangible concepts and how to memorize both visually and aurally. Continued on page 22

Learn skills at choir Continued from page 18 Listening
The choir member is always learning how to hear others, how to balance another part against their own. Each singer must also discover how to hear their voice before opening their mouth, how to hear the music before they sing it! Awareness
This is one of the awesome things about choral singing: intuiting things with your body as well as your brain! Sensing whether your note’s colour and shape, volume and duration is the same as the notes of your fellow singers can involve not just your ears but your abdomen, rib cage, lungs, throat, tongue, inner and outer muscles around the mouth...whew! Leadership
Choir members learn how to balance leading and following, how to take direction, how to read body language, how to interpret someone else’s ideas yet bring in their own personality. Trust
A choral singer must learn to trust their body, brain, and the connection between them! They learn to trust the director as well as the other members of the group.
A group is more than the sum of its parts. Each group can have a distinct personality, that becomes its own apart from all the interests and abilities brought by each member. To be part of a luminous performance in such a group can be breathtaking, a true “aha!” moment that every choir (and many an audience member) continues to strive for. The moral of the story is: Everybody should sing in a choir, of course! Not possible? Convince others to join with you. Interested in a choir in Camrose? Kodiaks reloading team for upcoming season By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks pulled the trigger on a few trades to begin the reloading process of another season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. In a complicated three way deal, the end result sent Josh Zablocki to the Kodiaks. He scored 20 goals and racked up 260 penalty minutes for the Grande Prairie Storm last season. Zablocki was sent to Nipawin in Saskatchewan before going to the Kodiaks. “We are excited to have Josh become a Kodiak and we know he will be a leader and a great addition to the team,” said Camrose coach and general manager Boris Rybalka. Camrose also acquired Joe Tambasco from the Drayton Valley Thunder for defenceman Max Salpeter. “Joe was a leader and captain of the Thunder and the Kodiaks are excited to have Joe in Camrose. We firstly would like to thank Max for being a Kodiak. He is a great young man with a huge future ahead of him.” Tambasco arrived in Camrose ready for training camp that opened on Aug. 26. Camrose will also receive future considerations. The Kodiaks sent Tanner Younghans to the Sherwood Park Crusaders for future considerations. The exhibition season includes a three game series with Sherwood Park. Games in Camrose are at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 and 10. The regular season will be launched on Sept. 16 with the Drumheller Dragons here for a 7 p.m. start. The following night, Sept. 17, the Okotoks Oilers provide the opposition.
SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID! A new hearing aid offer has been introduced for retirees. The hearing aid is a great value, simple to operate and brings IMPROVED hearing to thousands!
At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your
smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better
than even the previous top-ofthe-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

Round Hill hosts annual bench show By Dan Jensen
The wet summer impacted the number of entries at the Round Hill Agricultural Society’s 32 annual Bench Show Aug. 9 and 10. “We had 1,059 total entries from 56 exhibitors,” said Round Hill Bench Show committee member Debbie Blouin, who had 38 entries in the horticultural section. “Last year we had 1,277 entries from 79 exhibitors.” Blouin won 22 red first place ribbons, as well as the best in show award in the horticultural category for her fairy garden. “It’s nice to win the categories,” she said, “but mostly I enter just for the fun of it. Even when I don’t win anything, it is just good to see what others are doing and get ideas for what I can do next year. I have a garden with flowers in it, as well as a number of flower beds.” The photography category had the most entries in the show, at 302, while the youngest and oldest exhibitors were two-year-old Violet Regnier and Ken Wancho, respectively. The Willy Banack award went to Don Messick, the Cec Banack award to Ken Wancho, the junior art award to Sophia Regnier, the junior kitchen award to Noah Martin and the junior craft award to Natalie Welch. Doreen Wancho accumulated the most points among individuals, while Doreen and Ken Wancho and children accumulated the most points as a family. The Round Hill Bench Show has the reputation of being one of the largest in the province. “This is probably better than a lot of the others in the province because of the variety of entries,” said Alberta Horticultural Association first vice-president and Canadian Dahlia Society third vice-president Ken Jensen, who has been a judge at bench shows the last 20 years. “There aren’t a lot of shows that have as much baking and canning as this one.” Jensen feels the rain had a lot to do with the drop in the number of horticultural entries. “It’s tough to get good horticultural entries because you are forced to go out and pick what you have two days ahead of time,” he said. “It’s not like preserves or needlework where you can do the projects ahead of time.” Bench show organizers were pleased with the number of entries coming from younger exhibitors, especially in the areas of school art and photography. “It would be good to get more young people out but that is something that all organizations wish for,” said Jensen. “The older folks like me have more grey hair and more time to do it.” Matthew Stinson, who operates Stinson Catering at Armena, was in charge of
judging the show’s jams, jellies and preserves. “I have been a judge here for more than 10 years now and I love doing it,” said Stinson. “The show is introducing people to growing their own food and then canning and preserving it in whatever way possible. They know they can purchase the food in the food stores, but also know that if they grow and preserve it themselves it is more meaningful and in many cases more flavourful. It brings people back to their farm roots, especially on the prairies.” Stinson said the quality of products brought to the show has always been exceptional. “I always get lots of surprises when I see what people have produced in their own home. There are some fantastic flavours, colours and textures. The preserves are works of art because they look so good in the jars.” The Round Hill Bench Show brings people back to the basics of baking, sewing or making their own products. “The people aren’t using modern technology to make it, they are using needles, knives, spoons, rakes – just the simple things,” said Stinson. “It’s not really a competition as such because people simply enjoy presenting what they have made.” Stinson gets a big charge from seeing how exhibitors take his comments to heart. “It’s nice to see that people have implemented the recommendations I have made when I judge their entries,” he said. “I can’t give red ribbons in every category because I have to follow procedures. As well as flavour and presentation I look for sanitation.” Cheryl von Tettenborn entered a scarecrow she called “Kevin,” which she made as a joke for her friends, Shelly and Kevin Grundberg. “When they were in Cuba Kevin dressed like that,” said von Tettenborn, referencing the scarecrow’s bright red shirt, “so I found some clothes in the cupboards as well as some eyeglasses from the building where I work and made a figure that looked like him. I knew they (Grundbergs) were having a couple of family parties this summer, one being a wedding, so I thought it would be funny for the yard at their farm. I brought it over to them as a surprise and they started laughing. People have told me it looks just like him.” A Round Hill Bench Show fireworks display Tuesday evening was sponsored by Stewart and Jeanne Campbell, Noreen’s Place, Burnie’s Oilfield Service, Tomaszewski Farms, Weber Funeral Home Ltd., Round Hill Elks, E&L Autobody, Dale Campbell Trucking and Round Hill Hotel.

Former Camrosian celebrates one hundred years young act out their own versions of Will Rogers movies. “They watched one movie where the bad guys greased the railway track, bringing the train to a halt,” said Keith. “So a couple of his brothers decided that a live replay might be fun. They used all of their father’s machinery grease on the tracks, but the train didn’t stop. He learned a couple of lessons that day - not everything in the movies is reality and you don’t waste in hard times.” In 1939, Lloyd met his soon to be bride, Barbara Wanner. They went on a double date in New Norway and then, after a few years of courting, were married in 1943 in Daysland celebrating with a train ride to Calgary for a short honeymoon. The rest, one might say, is history as the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Dec. 27, 2013, an amazing feat in today’s society. Lloyd and Barbara con-
tinued the Marler family with four sons. Two of the sons reside in Edmonton, one in St. Albert and one in the Riviere Qui Barre area. In 1954, Lloyd left the farm to work in the oil fields hauling water and the family relocated several times, eventually settling in Edmonton in 1964. In 1969, Lloyd switched from hauling water for the oil and gas industry to hauling fuel for farmers in the Edmonton area, which he continued to do until his retirement in 1981. In 2014, at the age of 93 Barbara passed away. Lloyd currently resides in St. Albert where he is often visited by family which has now grown to include eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, many of whom recently gathered to help him celebrate yet another tremendous feat, turning 100-years-old.

By Lori Larsen The next time you turn onto Marler Drive in Camrose share a wishful thought for Lloyd Marler’s 100th birthday. Born on Aug. 18, 1916 in Bremner (now part of Edmonton) Lloyd moved with his parents Minnie Belle and Walter Marler in 1918 to a farm in the Camrose area. That three quarter section farm stood where what is now Marler Drive and the area directly south.
Walter farmed the area for many years and also acted as a councilor and county reeve. Minnie Belle and Walter had six boys and one girl. Eventually two of the sons, Lloyd and his brother Doug took over the farm, continuing until the mid 1950s. “Lloyd tells of stopping the tractor and walking a short distance for a refreshing beer on a hot day,” said Keith Marler, Lloyd’s son. “He still remembers the
old days when Camrose had wooden sidewalks. It was a custom back in his younger years for the town police to check the business premises at night to make sure they were locked. He recalls a time when he and some of his brothers decided to put honey on the door knobs before the police made their nightly rounds.” With the train track running on the east side of the farm it was easy access for some young energetic lads to

It’s that time of year again to heed school crossings and busses
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Participants of the Camrose Pubic Library Reading Buddies program were treated to a special guest reader on Aug. 18 as Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley stopped by to share his love for reading. Eight-year-old Atley Marsili demonstrated his own love for reading as each child was invited up to spend a special moment reading for Mr. Hinkley.
By Lori Larsen On Thursday, Sept. 1, Battle River School Division schools and Our Lady of Mount Pleasant will be back in full swing, St. Patrick Catholic School begins on Aug. 31 and children will once again be walking, cycling or bussed to schools throughout Camrose and area. Residents are reminded to use extra caution when driving. Canada Safety Council advises that, despite the first day of school being an annual occurrence, many drivers forget and may become frustrated, impatient or confused when it comes to road rules and regulations regarding school busses and pedestrian traffic. The number of fatalities and injuries among young pedestrians rises during the months of September and November.
Tips for safety
The Canada Safety Council advises all drivers to allow for extra time when driving. Rushing is not an excuse for disobeying traffic laws and endangering others. Always stop when approaching a bus with its arm extended and lights flashing, it is the law. In most cases traffic approaching from both directions must stop unless the road is separated by a median. Do not proceed until the lights are turned off and even then do so with caution. Adhere to the speed limits posted within school zones and slow down in residential or any areas where children may be present. Avoid making three-point turns and U-turns especially in school zones. These types of manoeuvres can put pedestrians in jeopardy, are very
unsafe to other drivers and may be illegal. Obey all crossing guards, signage and pedestrian crosswalk safety devices. Be aware of cyclists at all times. Allow for proper distance behind or while passing a cyclist. Check over your shoulder before opening your vehicle door to ensure you do not strike an oncoming cyclist. For parents or others driving children to and from school, never let children exit the vehicle into oncoming traffic. Avoid congested school areas by dropping children off a block or so away and walking them to the school. Everyone must and should obey all traffic laws at all times; when in doubt inquire with Camrose Police Service or your local RCMP detachment. Every child’s safety is every citizens’ concern.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Rubicon Lucifer dares you to go places By Murray Green
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Lucifer edition at Camrose Chrysler is still the best off-road vehicle made. It has been Canada’s favourite offroad vehicle since 1941. “Jeep Wrangler was made to go where other vehicles simply can’t go and it does it with the ability to navigate narrow gaps and dodge emergency situations with precision steering, optimized wheelbases and a tight turning radius,” said Camrose Chrysler sales consultant Tony Smith. “Suspension systems enhance on- and offroad performance by maximizing flexibility, axle articulation and wheel travel, while electrical and body seals and a high air-intake system let you traverse that stream with confidence.” Every Wrangler is fortified with underbody armour that protects critical components. Stamped steel skid plates defend the fuel tank and transfer case, while a skid bar safeguards the automatic transmission oil pan. Durability and articulation cone firm heavy shafts, shift housing, large pinion bearings and above-centre pinion mountings. The abovecentre mounting helps reduce driveshaft joint angles for smooth and quiet operation while adding ground clearance. Front sway disconnect allows you to flip a switch to disengage the sway bar when driving under 29 km/h in 4WD-low mode, permitting the front suspension to travel up to 25 per cent farther. Jeep’s Sunrider Soft Top utilizes special three-ply material that’s quiet, watertight and easy to fold away. The premium Sunrider Soft Top adds durability and sound dampening for a quieter ride. Plus, a dust blocker helps keep it in tip-top shape and makes it easier to wash.

a ir f low for torque, and equallength downpipes to assist lowand mid-range torque response. The front end accessory drive and highmounted rear-facing alternator enhance water fording capability. Its pulse-widthmodulated 600-watt fan is 100 per cent variable speed, not just high and low, plus it has a full-face condenser for better a stand-alone transmission oil cooler. The Pentastar comes standard with an exceptionally capable six-speed manual, or you can opt for the smooth-shifting five-speed automatic. This strategically optimized automatic transmission helps maximize fuel economy while its low first-
gear ratio gives Wrangler authentic Jeep brand off-road capability via a lower overall crawl ratio. The Command-Trac 4WD system employs the NV241 GII transfer case, delivering smooth and quiet part-time shift-on-the-fly operation, and comes standard on Sport and Sahara models. For those who demand ultimate capability, Wrangler Rubicon with its standard Rock-Trac 4WD system delivers radical crawling strength at low speeds
for greater control over tough terrain. Control
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) assists drivers in maintaining control by utilizing hydraulic brake assist, traction control, Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), and Trailer Sway Control (TSC) to constantly monitor driver input against the vehicle’s actual course. If needed, ESC automatically brakes and/ or reduces engine torque, while ERM estimates the
potential for wheel lift, reducing engine power and applying the brakes if needed. TSC detects sway unique to trailering and engages the brakes to slow the vehicle, increasing brake force to one side of the vehicle to help counteract the sway from the trailer. You can drive the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon by visiting Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Dedicated Lunty reaps marathon award By Lori Larsen Waking up at 4 a.m., strapping on runners and facing the great outdoors, no matter what the weather, is a sign of sheer dedication and Brendan Lunty knows it all too well. First place winner of the Aug. 21 Edmonton 42 kilometre Marathon with a time of 2:35:21, which he ran on his 38th birthday, Brendan epitomizes not only a devoted runner, but a role model of a healthy active lifestyle. “I started running marathons in 2001, in Edmonton,” said Brendan. “So it is always neat to go there again.” This was Brendan’s 91st marathon, the 11th time he ran the Edmonton Marathon and the second time (first time was 2010) he came in first place for this marathon. Brendan began running under the encouragement of his now wife and has never looked back. “You do find it is like an addiction,” commented Brendan. “But everyone is addicted to something you just have to find something positive to be addicted over or obsessive about.” For some people birthdays mean indulging in something sinfully delicious like birthday cake and ice cream. Brendan was no exception, the only difference was he ran off the calories thus earning him a birthday meal of Chinese food and, at the petitions of his five and two-year-old daughters, an ice cream cake as well.
Brendan Lunty
Besides the rewards of guilt free calories, running for Brendan has other payoffs including the health benefits, travelling to other places such as Boston, Paris and Hawaii where he has participated in marathons, being a role model for his children and winning a marathon. “It is really rewarding to
know that all the hard work that you put into this is not all for not,” he said. “It is kind of emotional especially at the finish because there are hundreds or thousands of people there and they are all cheering and excited. It really is inspiring.” For Brendan the hard work is making the time to
train. Getting up on a regular basis at 4 a.m., having a quick bite to eat, then out the door and on the running trail at 4:30 a.m. for a one and a half hour run then back home to get ready to leave for work as an x-ray lab technician at the Viking hospital by 7 a.m. “My secret – I don’t sleep much,” laughed Brendan.
For most it seems like a daunting lifestyle. For Brendan, his wife and his two young daughters, it is normal. “My daughters think every mom and dad run in the morning and at night. We get them involved with the running club here in town. They (running club) always have events for children that are non-competitive, just for fun, but the girls like to say they have a big race coming up.” Brendan also remarked on the availability of trail systems in Camrose and how it is a contributing factor to his continual commitment to running. “The trails in town are awesome, we are so lucky to have what we have here. It makes it easy to get up and run. I do a loop on the bike trails in the morning, about 20 kilometres. “In the summer, I love running on the ski trails. I get to see a lot of wildlife and you can get all the way down to the river where it is so calm and so nice.” Along with a few other Camrosians, Brendan attended the Quebec City Marathon held on Aug. 28. He ran the race with a time of 2:39:36 taking 3rd place out of 1265 runners. “It is rewarding to know all this hard work is paying off,” concluded Brendan. “Things like this just don’t happen; you get out of it what you put into it, which is no different than anything else in life.”
Schultz captures gold medal in pentathlon By Murray Green
Camrose athlete Taylor Schultz entered the grueling pentathlon event at the Alberta Summer Games in Leduc last month because she likes track and field. She was selected to enter
the pentathlon, a combination of several events, and Taylor emerged with the most points at the Games. The pentathlon consists of 100 metre race, high jump, long jump, shot put and 800m events. “I did pretty good in the
100m race with a time of 13.16, which was okay and I was first. Then we went to high jump and I jumped 1.48m, which was okay, but I thought it could have been better,” explained Taylor. “In shot put, I threw 9.81m, which was a personal best for me, so that was really good. In long jump, I reached 4.47m, which was pretty good. Then was the 800m, which is not my favorite event.” Taylor didn’t know where she stood in the standings prior to her last event. “I did okay, but I ran a 2:40, which is not ideal. However, since I was strong in the other events, it was enough to pull me through,” she shared. “High jump and shot put are my favourite events. I went to a Zone 4 try out meet and entered the events. The coaches put me into the
pentathlon. I wanted to play basketball, but they changed the age group a few years ago, so I was too old. I played when I was in Grade 7. So, I decided to go into track. I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did,” said Taylor. She experienced the Games as a team player and as an individual competitor. “It’s really different. I like the individual sports because I don’t have to rely on someone else. In team sports you have to do everything as a team, where in track you have freedom to go and watch other sports,” she added. “The Games are a lot more intense then tournaments. The Summer Games allow you to see and play everybody. The officials are better at track in the Games.” Taylor suffered a hip injury on June 6 and worked
hard to heal and get back into shape for the Games. Pentathlon has been added to high school track meets recently. “I would like to continue in track and other school sports as long as I can,” Taylor said, not committing to one sport. “I’m not really good in any one event. But, I’m fairly good in several events. I like the pentathlon because it has several events. The training is similar for the events. You still need speed and power for all of the events,” she added. Taylor is thinking about going to the next Summer Games, but she would move into the heptathlon and add javelin and hurdles to the mix of events.

Jane (Jean) Catherine Hennig of Camrose, formerly of Alder Flats, passed away peacefully at the age of 80, surrounded by her family, on August 22, 2016. Jane was born in Edmonton on October 13, 1935 to William (Bill) and Lillian (Lil) Pearl Milroy. She married the love of her life, Ted, in 1951. Their life together brought them to Bottrel, a small hamlet in southern Alberta. They were soon blessed with three daughters and remained in Bottrel until their jobs moved them to Cochrane. After a few years the family moved to Calgary where they remained for many years. Jean worked for one of the banks there and as a payroll officer for an oil company and developed a real love of working with finances. A new chapter in Jean’s life began when they left the city behind and went farming in Alder Flats. Jean was in her glory. Her love of gardening led her to create beautiful flower/rock gardens as well as organic vegetable and herb gardens. She also loved working with animals and they maintained an exceptional herd of cattle, and raised chickens and pigs. You could always find a friendly cat or two to visit with. The cattle became their biggest love and they ran a cow-calf operation for many years. Ted passed away in 2010 and Jean moved to Camrose to be near family. Other family members soon moved to Camrose and it became a home to two of her daughters, as well as a grandson and granddaughter and their families. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren thought Grandma’s house was the best place to visit. Her love for her family was a beautiful gift to all of us. She was always there for us, whether it was to lend a helping hand or just to listen and provide a shoulder to lean on. Jean was an amazing woman and her thirst for knowledge brought her great happiness. She loved history and was fascinated learning about any new scientific discoveries. She was also a woman of change and was always looking for new ways to make things better. She was a huge supporter of natural health methods and worked endlessly towards having changes brought about that would provide everyone with choices and the opportunity to benefit from alternative care methods. Jean is survived by her children, Gwen Hennig of Camrose; Lil (Bryan) Auser of Limerick, Saskatchewan; and Ruth (Doug) Hauck of Camrose; five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Salvation Army or to the Red Cross. The family sends a very special thank you to Dr. Minders, Bici and the staff at St. Mary’s hospital. The special care that they provided with such compassion was truly wonderful. Forever remembered, missed and loved by Bernette, Donald and Crystal Fietz and family; Lila and Dale Kreutz and family

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
ARMENA COMMUNITY MARKET 2016 – Mon., Sept. 5, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Armena Anniversary Park. Everyone welcome! Please contact Donna Lange at 780-672-1000 if you would like to book a table to sell “homegrown or homemade” products. Last big camping long weekend of the year! Stop at the ROSE CITY FARMERS’ MARKET for all your market needs Thursday, 1 - 6 p.m. in climate-controlled comfort at the Duggan Mall
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Augustana women’s hoop team adds players By Murray Green
The Augustana Vikings women’s basketball team is preparing the fall season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. Samantha Dargis, a point guard, from the St. Albert Catholic High School Skyhawks is ready to move on to the college level. “I was drawn to Augustana by the fact that it is a smaller school and the opportunity to work with a great team and coaching staff,” said Dargis. Nicole Ubels of Lacombe played for the Central Alberta Christian High School Knights. She is a 5’11 guard. “I am taking physical education as my major, and biology as my minor. I plan to become a physiotherapist down the road. This is my first year playing college ball. I want to grow in my game as a player and teammate,” said Ubels. “I want to learn more about the game and become the best I can be. In my spare time I work as a lifeguard, play other school sports and relax with friends and family. Those who have encouraged me have been many: my coaches, parents, family and friends. Mr. Eggink (my high school basketball coach) always encouraged me to strive to be a leader, play hard and not give up,” she added. “My parents have been nothing but supportive; from driving me to different sporting activities (sometimes three time a week) to making sure my homework is always completed and they never failed to encourage me every step of the way. I was drawn to Augustana by the size of the campus and the close knit community. I have a passion for sports and I didn’t want it to end after high school.” Emma vanBruinessen, a forward, is from Leduc. “I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in physical education, however down the road I hope to get into political sciences and pursue my goal to become a politician. I’ve been playing basketball since I was in Grade 4, as well as finding myself active during the off season playing a multitude of other sports. Choosing where I would attend in the fall was a difficult task with the opportunity to also play volleyball at the post secondary level. Augustana, however, stood out as it offers me a U of A degree, while still staying in a small learning environment. I look forward to a great season with my new family and can’t wait for what’s to come in the next few years.”
