Bailey Theatre Burn the Mortgage endeavour The Bailey Theatre Society Board of Directors, and each of the countless supporters of the exceptionally restored entertainment facility, have their sights set on a milestone goal. They are hoping the final weeks of the Burn the Mortgage campaign will allow this symbolic burning of the mortgage to actually take place! A concerted effort to rid the facility of mortgage debt was launched in 2015. It is hoped that over the next three and one-half months, the final $350,000 owing to the bank will be paid in full. See more details pertaining to the Bailey Theatre Burn the Mortgage endeavour on page 11.

Teaching machine quilting down under By Lori Larsen Kathleen Riggins said a fond farewell to the country down under and is back in Camrose with a collection of wonderful memories and even more experience of teaching machine quilting, after a month long trip to Australia. At the request of one of her friends who lives in Australia, Kathleen applied for a position to teach machine quilting during the Australian Machine Quilting Festival and, to her surprise, was accepted. Accompanied by her husband, Rocky, Kathleen left on Aug. 3 and returned just under a month later on Aug. 30. “I taught classes in four different cities in Australia,” said Kathleen. “The classes were geared toward people who were more interested in learning actual machine quilting, not so much the piecing and the ages ranged anywhere from mid 20s to mid 80s.” Kathleen taught 12 classes totalling a little over 250 students. Kathleen also did some trunk shows, which involved showing and speaking about quilts she had taken along, which made packing for the trip a wee bit of a challenge. “Rocky and I packed for an entire month,” she remarked. “We had one suitcase full of quilts and then one suitcase that we had to pack with clothes for both of us for an entire month in temperatures ranging between 35 degrees (Celsius) and 5
degrees (Celsius). Not to mention clothes for going to the beach and clothes for looking professional while teaching our classes.” Kathleen smiled when she said how proud she was that they managed to get everything into those two suitcases. Along with gaining a great deal of experience teaching, which she is happy to be able to share with customers in Camrose, Kathleen was able to spend some time experiencing the people and beauty of Australia. “We went for a whole month so we had time to travel around,” said Kathleen. “We visited the great barrier reef, saw all the Australian animals and went to the rain forest, dessert and ocean. One of Kathleen’s most memorable experiences was spending the day at Morten Island, sand boarding, snorkeling and kayaking. Now back home, Kathleen has settled back into co-running Quilting From the Heart with parents, Roger and Ardelle Kerr, and her husband and teaching classes. “Because I taught so many people and classes in Australia, it has helped me realize what I would do differently, what really worked for teaching and will help me be a better teacher,” said Kathleen. “I’m teaching three quilting classes this term and we offer many other classes as well.” She will also be teaching classes in Edmonton in Sep-

tember, Vancouver and Victoria in October and Savanna in February. Kathleen, who has been quilting since she was a young teen, shared her thoughts on the craft. “I don’t think its about making a comeback, people have always quilted. I think more people are paying attention to it. “In the last five years there has been a movement
towards modern quilting, not the sort of quilts you think of your grandmother making, more with brighter colours and some negative space, less busy quilts.” And quilts are no longer for just laying across the end of the bed or snuggling up to on a cool night, now many quilters produce works of art that can be displayed on walls. And as one looks around The Sewing Center and Quilt-
ing From the Heart store you understand the passion Kathleen shares for this unique form of art. The walls are covered with beautifully stitched quilts, vibrant in colour and rich in variety. For more information about Quilting From the Heart classes visit http:// qfth.ca/ or telephone 780-6795492.

Kodiaks ready for brand new season By Murray Green
Camrose Kodiaks outscored the Sherwood Park Crusaders 7-6, Sept. 2, as the team moves closer to the regular season. A total of nine goals were scored in a wild second period of the contest. Both teams each scored a goal in the first and third periods. Tyler Schendel of the Kodiaks led the offence with three tallies for the hat trick. Other markers came from Cole Lewis, Angus Scott, Eric Lacombe and Eddy May. Goalie Joey May stopped 42 of 48 shots for the Kodiaks, while Camrose fired 41 at the Crusaders. On Sept. 5, the Kodiaks tightened up on defence, but lost a close 2-0 match to the Olds Grizzlys. It was scoreless until the third when Olds netted the deciding tally. The second goal was an empty net marker. Patrick Gora turned away all 16 shots he faced and May stopped 14 of 15

Local area resident wins the trip of a lifetime
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Linda Haugan, left, holds up one end of a scarf purchased by her goddaughter, Katelynne Cooke, right on their trip to Rio, Brazil during the 2016 Summer Olympics. Katelynne holds the stubs of the tickets to the diving, athletics and closing ceremonies. Linda won the trip through a contest held by Petro Canada sponsored by Suncor Energy Products Partnership. By Lori Larsen
Linda Haugan of Holden, never dreamt that by texting a dozen or so entries into a PetroPass 2016 Rio Olympics Trip Contest(sponsored by Suncor Energy Products Partnership) at the Viking Petro Canada card lock station that she would be one of two grand prize winners. “I entered the contest early in the year,” said Haugan.
“I sat there and texted it in every time I went.” Persistence paid off big for Haugan when she received a call in April informing her she was one of the two winners in Canada. “The manager that came down and took my picture for Petro Canada couldn’t believe both winners were from Western Canada. The prize package included a trip for two including
round trip airfare, three night hotel stay at the Golden Tulip Regente, two tickets to three Olympic events which included diving, athletics and the closing ceremonies, breakfast daily and most other food costs, transportation to and from the events and the airport, and a sightseeing excursion in Rio including the iconic Christ the Redeemer. The prize was worth $20,800. After winning the contest Linda had several offers from
people more than willing to accompany her on the trip for two. “I had lots of volunteers, probably about 30, because I work at the school in Viking and everybody wanted to go,” smiled Haugan. “I went through my list and my nieces said they would both go with me but one lives in Vancouver and the other in Kelowna so it was a little difficult to get them, so I asked Katey.”
Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month
By Lori Larsen In support of and to assist in creating awareness about Muscular Dystrophy Mayor Norm Mayer, on behalf of council and the City of Camrose, signed a proclamation declaring September as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month. Muscular dystrophies (MD)are a group of more than 30 genetic diseases that are characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles controlling movement. MD can affect anyone and despite it being reputed as a childhood or infancy disease, some types do appear later in life. The disease has no known cure and has few treatments or methods for stopping its progression. However, research and medical interventions have not only increased the lifespan of individuals living with the disorder but have also improved their quality of life by enhancing physical mobility and social interactions, delaying symptoms, and preventing heart and lung complications. Educating more people and drawing awareness to the disorder increases the advancement in research and brings light to a cause that affects the lives of not only the individuals living with the disorder but the people supporting them. Muscular Dystrophy Canada is a national, not-for-profit organization that is committed to funding research in the causes, treatments and perhaps eventual cure for neuromuscular disorders. For more information on Muscular Dystrophy Canada visit the website at www.muscle.ca/.

Mission Church event assists El Salvador By Murray Green
The Wetaskiwin Mission Church is hosting a Harvest Market and Community Garage Sale Fundraiser to help people in El Salvador. The event will take place at the church (3610-56 Ave.) on Friday, Sept. 16 from 4 to
7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Last year was the first time we did this type of event and there was a very good response, so we thought we would do it again. This year, we will be raising money to build homes in El Salva-
Katey, (Katelynne Cooke) is Linda’s goddaughter, who just turned 18 in April and was more than willing to celebrate not only her own 18th birthday but her godmother’s (Linda) 65th birthday in Rio. “The day we arrived in Rio, Aug. 19 was my 65th birthday,” said Haugan. “It will be a great memory for both of us – her 18th and my 65th.” When asked about the opportunity to attend the Olympics, Haugan and Cooke both agreed it was spectacular. “Those athletes were amazing,” said Haugan. “I don’t know how they did those dives, they were so good.” When describing the closing ceremonies Haugan exclaimed. “The noise level was off the roof, there was dancing and people clapping and singing.” Despite a long flight and an action packed trip Haugan was still energized and excited about the entire experience. “It was awesome, the food, the hotel, the people, everything,” said Haugan. “It was my first trip out of Canada and it’s been probably 40 years since I have been on a plane.” The trip could only be described as that of once in a lifetime, attending Olympic games, being treated like royalty and meeting, not only the citizens of Rio de Janeiro, but also people from all over the world.
dor, with a company called Shelter Canada,” said Sandrelle Kijewski, administrative assistant at Wetaskiwin Mission Church. This event is a combination of a farmers’ market (with a variety of vendors), a massive community garage
sale, silent auction, a pie and bake sale and face painting for the children. “This was a really neat event last year and we are even more excited to host it this year,” said Kijewski.
A concerned citizen reported that a male was passed out in the lobby of the court house and showed signs of intoxication. Members attended and spoke with the male who was aggressive and noticeably intoxicated. The male was arrested for Public Intoxication and held in custody until sober, where he was released on a Promise to Appear to court. Police received a 911 complaint from a female indicating that her commonlaw boyfriend was verbally aggressive and she wanted police to attend to assist. Police went to the residence and determined the male was currently out on a probation order for assault on the female and had a no contact condition. The male was arrested and charged with two counts of Breach of his Probation Order and released on a Promise to Appear to court.

Bailey Theatre’s Burn the Mortgage campaign is heating up this fall By Murray Green
It has been five years since the Bailey Theatre opened after a massive restoration. The cost of the huge project was supported by donations from the MacInnis family Foundation, private donations, City of Camrose, provincial and federal governments. The cost to bring the 100-yearold building back to life was approximately $8.1 million. A mortgage of $600,000 was obtained to finish the project. Last year, a Burn the Mortgage campaign was launched to pay off the
remainder of debt. After receiving donations ranging from $500 to $50,000 and a debt reduction grant from the province for $75,000 the Bailey Theatre is in better shape. “We only have $350,000 left to make us mortgage free. By paying it off, we would reduce our annual operating costs by $42,000,” said David Roth, fundraising chair for the Bailey Theatre. “We also have pledges from two individuals to pay $10,000 each once we have raised the rest of the funds.”
The Bailey received a reprieve in paying the principal, as long as they can pay at least $24,000 each year. “Our goal is to pay off the mortgage by the end of 2016. To do that we are looking for several major donors, many smaller donors and possibly another debt reduction grant,” he added. Every dollar donated in the campaign goes directly to the paying off the mortgage. Donations will be eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Contact David Roth at 780-281-2216 for more information.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Primary Care Network patient Liane Hillaby, left, receives a consultation from the PCN’s registered dietitian Rani Fedoruk. By Lori Larsen
The Primary Care Network (PCN) servicing Camrose and area is a vital entity that provides residents with healthcare needs through collaborative and comprehensive team based patient care. During the Committee of Whole meeting on Aug. 15, Camrose Primary Care Network executive director Stacey Strilchuk provided council with an update on the PCN referring to demographics based on 2014 population for Camrose and county of 29,760. Statistics
“The 35 to 64-year-old population is going up,” said Strilchuk. “We are trying to do some planning that will target that group. The average age (mean) is coming in at about 42.5 years. “The life expectancy is average to Alberta at around 81.2 years.” Strilchuk indicated an area of concern was that of the increasing numbers in social economic with 17 per cent of the population having no high school certification. “The birth rate is 36 to 1,000 which is higher than the province’s at 27 to 1,000. The good news is smoking during pregnancy has gone down, but the teen birth rate has gone up,” she said. “I pay closer attention to this in the business planning process year because we want to try our best to align those things with what we are looking at for programs and services.” With regards to mortality Strilchuk pointed out that heart and stroke, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and cancer remain the largest contributing factors and that hyper tension (high blood pressure) rose 117 per cent. “One of the other areas that stood out for me was the self reported risk factors.
Smoking and drinking were both identified as high, people are self identifying needing support in these areas. “But the numbers that jumped the most were in mental health.” Teamwork
Strilchuk spoke about the work the PCN is accomplishing in the area of multi-disciplinary team patient centre care approach. “The minister (of health) has spoken quite often about how we align that population health data with what we are doing in the community, and that very much sits on the shoulders of the Primary Care Network. In the 10 years of operation, the PCN has grown from 12 doctors to 50 by January of 2017, within the entire catchment area. “Physician recruitment is a huge feather in their (Physician Attraction and Retention Committee) cap to have those physicians come on board to Camrose is not easy,” commended Strilchuk. She also spoke about the success of the hospitalist program which began in June of this year in partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital. “It already has had an immediate impact not only on continuity of care in the hospital but also with the physicians work life balance, adding more access for physicians to see patients right in their own clinics.” “The stats for the hospitalist show they are running at 25 patients, which is caring for their maximum load at the hospital, with only one hospitalist and only two months into the program. “Eventually we will get that to full capacity where the hospital will have two hospitalitsts on board full time managing the whole hospital.” Strilchuk reported an
increase in the chronic disease management programs. “We have seen referrals from physicians go up for diabetic management, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, weight management and now we are adding a COPD compliment. We are aligning ourselves with what the population growth is telling us we need to do. “We are seeing an increase in our prenatal clinic,” added Strilchuk noting that four to six physicians rotate through the prenatal clinic seeing approximately 300 to 350 patients annually. “We have also seen an increase in our geriatric program. We had a number of patients referred because of a fall or because of a risk of a fall and that program is a full out multi-discipline team approach including the elderly specialist Dr. Smith, our registered nurse, exercise specialist, dietician and mental health worker. We are doing that on a grant of $91,000 from Covenant Health Corporate and able to find out a way to sustain it for this year and hopefully for our new business year. “I want to stress the work that we are doing in our community with our community partners. Our team has gone out and created those relationships with Alberta Health Services, The Bethany Group and Covenant Health, you can see it across every one of our programs.” Strilchuk mentioned the success the PCN has had with regards to the work in palliative and end of life care. “This last year our support group has grown for palliative and end of life care where we are sitting with 30 stakeholders around the table. “The barriers have come down, people are sharing information, resources, and we have been able to bring the hospice into the stakeholders
in order to look at how we can do business better.” What’s ahead
Strilchuk shared with council some of the PCN’s plans for moving forward. “We are looking at offering a virtual clinic for after hours. A person can call that virtual clinic and see somebody (virtually) with their concern and have it appropriately triaged. Other initiatives include support with and from Augustana through and a nurse practitioner or physician in order to provide assistance on campus in managing health care needs. “Many of the items Alberta Health Care is talking to us about with regards to multidisciplinary team based care we have already started and are well on the way which has positioned us for more opportunities that will only benefit this community,” remarked Strilchuk. The funding for the Camrose PCN remains at $62 per patient calculating to an overall operating budget of $2.2 million.

Questions from council
Councillor Max Lindstrand inquired as to concerns surrounding long time care and seniors having to transfer out of Camrose before being placed back in Camrose. Strilchuk indicated these issues were being addressed through the hospitalist program. “We wanted to ensure the hospitalist program is addressing it as far as length of stay, hospital admissions, appropriate admissions and readmissions. They are also making effort to start the discharge process at the time of admission and link in home care and discharge planning for that specifically with Alberta Health Services when it comes to transitioning that patient to long term care.” Continued on page 30

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Poetry of earth and sky
Watching the colours of autumn is making me appreciate the beauty of our countryside. My two favourite views are horizon views – the line of earth and sky on the prairies, and the line of water and sky on the ocean. That sense of being able to see forever makes me feel expansive. When I see the line of horizon – sky and earth or sky and water – my optimism increases and I imagine there are possibilities we haven’t yet dreamed of, but could. That horizon line lifts my spirits. I think prairie and ocean people may have more in common with one another than they do with valley or mountain people. Prairie and ocean people both get to see forever. I’ve heard people who grew up in the mountains or in a valley say they feel protected and safe. If they’re away from the mountains for a while, they long to return. The valley walls or the mountains feel like guardians watching over them. When they’re in terrain like the prairies, they feel exposed and unsafe. I suspect that the kind of terrain in which we grew up may give us a primeval preference for horizon views or enclosed views, and it affects what we think is beautiful. *** My favourite story about beauty was told by Courtney Milne. Courtney Milne is a photographer famous for landscapes around the world but especially of his beloved prairies. One of his favourite authors is W. O. Mitchell. W. O. Mitchell grew up in Weyburn Saskatchewan and spent much of his adult life in High Prairie and Calgary. Growing up, I listened to Mitchell’s Jake and the Kid stories on the radio. His book Who Has Seen the Wind is one of my all-time favourites; reading it felt like he knew the people in my home town. Western landscapes – prairie, foothills and mountains – are as powerful as the characters in W. O. Mitchell books. In 1999, the year after W. O. Mitchell died, his son and daughter-in-law Orm and Barbara Mitchell collaborated with Courtney Milne to create W. O. Mitchell Country, a book with 200 images of prairie, foothills and sky, accompanied by passages from W. O. Mitchell books. I heard a talk-and-slides presentation by Courtney Milne introducing the book. This is my favourite story from that evening. *** Early one morning in the mountains, Courtney Milne spotted some beautiful wildflowers by the side of the road. He pulled over and began to set up his photography equipment. A woman pulled up behind him and asked, “What are you doing?” “Taking photos,” he said. “Do you mind if I watch?” she asked. “I’ll be quiet.” He agreed. A while later, another vehicle pulled over to the side of the road. Usually when a couple of cars are parked by the side of the road in the mountains, there’s wildlife or a waterfall or something spectacular to see. The third vehicle was sort of a stereotype. I may have the details wrong, but the impression is accurate – a big RV unit, pulling a motor boat with a couple of quads chained to the roof. A large man got out of the unit. He saw Courtney Milne and the woman by the side of the road and asked, “What are you doing?” “Taking photos,” Courtney Milne replied. The man looked around for a moment and said, “Of what?” In telling the story, Courtney Milne said, “Something just snapped.” He looked at the man and said, somewhat aggressively, “Beauty!” The woman behind Courtney Milne, who had been silent, piped up. “Yeah! Beauty!” *** Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So what beauty are your eyes seeing today? Speaking of beauty, I’d like to thank the reader who sent a beautiful letter in response to the column “What Feeds Your Soul?” a few weeks ago. Your letter made my day and my week and fed my soul. Thank you! *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

I am going to write this letter very carefully because of the large support which our present government has. Health
care was a very important issue to many Albertans. Despite massive increases to spending, medical surgery room wait times have increased to 11 weeks. Under this government, our health care system is more about dollars spent instead of actual patients served. Wildrose shadow health minister Drew Barnes said, “The NDP has not only failed to put together any real wait time reduction but things are getting worse.” Barnes also said, “with over $20 billion in spending, Alberta should be a leader in outcomes in
patients across Canada, instead Albertans are just seeing wait times get longer.” I almost forgot. I guess this is why people voted these people in? “It is the government for you,” people have said to me. All I can say is this was why I never voted for them. But, I guess I am not in the majority. People in the majority must have an inside track. I guess it is not the one which I am on. Lorne Vanderwoude, Camrose
then tells the victim his/ her international package has arrived and provides a phone number along with a four digit code for the victim to call and claim the package. “When the number is called an automated voice then starts to ask for personal information in order to verify if the package is indeed yours,” added Constable Bauer. “This is just another scam in which the community needs to be reminded that they should never give out their personal information to unknown callers.
“We all need to be aware that identity theft can occur at anytime in a variety of ways.” If you think you are a victim of a deceptive telephone caller or a telemarketing scam visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online, or call 1-888-495-8501. If you suspect you may be the victim of fraud or have been tricked into giving personal or financial information, contact the Camrose Police Service at 780-672-4444 or RCMP at 780-672-3342.
Delivery scam hits Camrose
By Lori Larsen
Online shopping has become a growing industry and many people are purchasing items which are then delivered. Camrose Police Service would like to warn residents of a scam that is once again taking place in Camrose. “The scam has been around since 2015 and involves a phone call from an automated voice messaging machine that identifies themselves as Canadian Delivery Express,” said Constable Kelly Bauer with Camrose Police Service Crime Prevention The automated voice

Hus tributes the legendary Stompin’ Tom Connors By Murray Green
Country singer Tim Hus is holding a concert at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Sept. 18 beginning at 8 p.m. as A Tribute to Stompin’ Tom Connors. Hus, with his Across This Land in Story and Song tour, plays a tribute to music icon Stompin’ Tom Connors. Stompin’ Tom’s songs have become part of the Canadian cultural landscape. His legendary tunes celebrate everything from hockey to bingo to potatoes and have made him one of the most important singers in our country’s history. Stompin’ Tom’s music continues to entertain people from coast to coast
to coast with a sense of national pride that no other artist has duplicated. This multi-media tribute will feature many of the songs that made Stompin’ Tom a Canadian treasure, and also will include stories of the incredible life of Stompin’ Tom. Hus is a celebrated Canadian western artist himself who proudly carries on the tradition of writing songs about working Canadians and Canada’s rich history. Stompin’ Tom handpicked Hus to tour with him, not only as his opening act, but to play in his band as well. Hus performed at Stompin’ Tom’s funeral where he was also
a pallbearer. He will share his personal stories of his friend and mentor Stompin’ Tom in a can’t miss show of music, patriotism and board stomping. Both Connors and Hus played at the Big Valley Jamboree in the past. Hus was born in Nelson, BC, but calls Alberta his home now. Host and comedian, CTV’s Graham Neil is presenting the show at the Lougheed Centre. To purchase tickets call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances.

Bailey Kids Series
Simmons children’s show at Bailey By Murray Green
The Bailey Kids series provides entertainment for the whole family. Juno Award winner Al Simmons kicks off this series with his creative genius and highly original performance on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. Simmons is a musician, inventor and all-around entertainer on stage. He’s been called the Thomas Edison of entertainers, a wizard of one-liners and a lightning bolt of lunacy. His astounding gadgets, preposterous songs, impeccable comic timing and kooky take on classic vaudeville have thrilled and entertained fans of all ages for more than four decades. Simmons is a creative genius whose highly original performances of profound wackiness and of off-the-wall inventions have taken the arts of music and comedy to unparalleled heights of hilarity. Young or old, you cannot fail to appreciate this man’s frenetic stage antics and mindboggling lovableness. Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre.com/ tickets, at the Bailey Box Office 5041-50 Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780-672-5510.

On Forgiveness”
“
September 15-18, 2016 The year is 2008. Late one evening in rural Kenya, a band of men break into a house and brutally assault and rob the couple living there. The couple had recently arrived from Canada for missionary work among orphans. Near the point of death, they struggle to find medical treatment in the dark of night. Their healing is miraculous, but the greater story is their spiritual journey to healing through the power of forgiveness. Hear their inspiring story – how joy and hope replaced their shock and suffering.

law almost match the total passed in the five previous Parliaments combined. So far, the passage of PMBs into law by the current Liberal government indicates a return to the historic low-rate of success for PMBs. I learned of my position on the PMB eligibility list in January of this year and I have spent considerable time and effort preparing a Bill that would have required the drug fentanyl to be “tamper resistant” before being dispensed in Canada. This would have gone a long way to preventing the abuse of the drug. The abuse of fentanyl is at crisis levels in some locations in Canada (and the world). The abuse of this drug is killing Canadians at unprecedented rates. When misused, fentanyl is a deadly synthetic opioid. The RCMP has reported an increase in domestic production of illicit fentanyl. My Bill would have caused the federal minister of health to take action to help prevent the drug being tampered with for the purpose of illicit use. Last week, the Liberal government in Ottawa announced that six chemicals used to produce the drug fentanyl will be made illegal to import, or export without authorization. Fentanyl is now subject to the same controls as cocaine, heroin and other illegal drugs under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Topsoil work bee
By Lori Larsen Restoring our land is one of the ways we can ensure the sustainability of our world for future generations. Enriching the soil supports beneficial soil organisms that helps fight pests and disease, reduces runoff and promotes healthy plant and tree growth. On Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will be hosting a soil work bee for the Meeting Creek Prairie Grassland Restoration Project. The techniques being implemented for the project are not new, but are a variation of what the ancient cultures from the Amazon used to grow topsoil.

THE KEY TO HIGHER YIELDS IN CANOLA AND SPRING WHEAT For canola and spring wheat growers, making the right investments to achieve higher yields can be tricky. Research on fertility and seed safety shows how MicroEssentials® S15™ could be the right investment for growers in Western Canada.
Spring Wheat Yield Trials The Mosaic Company evaluated the yield response of spring wheat during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The trial compared MicroEssentials S15 (13-33-0-15S) + MOP to MAP (11-52-0) + MOP. MAP is commonly used as a phosphorus (P) fertilizer for spring wheat, and MicroEssentials is a premium P fertilizer that provides two forms of sulphur (S) (sulphate and elemental sulphur) for season-long availability. Spring wheat can also benefit from applications of potassium (K). Both fertilizer blends were applied during preplant and utilized as a broadcast method. In the end, the study showed that when MicroEssentials S15 and MOP were applied, a 7.7 bu/ac increase over nitrogen (N) occurred, and a 2.2 bu/ac increase occurred over MAP + MOP. Seed Safety Canola is a very sensitive seed when placed in close proximity to N and S fertilizers. Seed-placing P and basing application rates on seed safety rather than crop requirements can have a great effect on growers’ yields. Recent research conducted by the University of Manitoba examined seed-safe rates of phosphorus and sulphur in canola, and found that P applied at rates based on seed safety may not be adequate enough to maximize yields. Hybrid canola requires a higher amount of P and S throughout the growing season. The typical seed-placed rates for canola are 20 to 25 pounds of P2O5/ac and 10 pounds of S/ac. But, a 45-bu/ac crop of canola will remove 36 pounds of P2O5 and 13.5 pounds of S from the field. This means that there is higher uptake of P and S throughout the growing season than put in for a seed-safety rate, and ultimately, under-application of these nutrients will limit yield potential and deplete soil reserves. Seed-placed fertilizers give farmers the benefit of knowing nutrients are available at the start of the growing process. Immobile nutrients, such as P, can be the cause of a poor stand even though they provide the benefit of being easily available to the root right away. Included in the University of Manitoba’s research was MicroEssentials S15. Improved stands and seed safety occurred when MicroEssentials S15 was applied at the same rate as traditional blends, like MAP and AS. Higher rates of phosphorus and sulphur applied with blends accounted for a loss of 11 plants per square meter. MicroEssentials S15 saved nearly 50 percent more plants, with a reduction of only six plants per square meter when applied at the same rates of P and S.

The canola yield trials from 2011–2013 compared MicroEssentials S15 to MAP + ammonium sulphate (AS). A blend of MAP + AS is commonly used as the fertilizer source for canola growers. A proper application of P and S is critical for optimum canola yields. The fertilizer was applied with the seed at planting. Across the three-year trial period, MicroEssentials S15 increased yield by 1.0 bu/ac, 1.6 bu/ac and 3.7 bu/ac, respectively, over MAP + AS fertilizers. The 3.7 bu/ac yield advantage in 2013 demonstrates the superior performance of MicroEssentials under optimum growing conditions.

Uniform Nutrient Distribution Every plant requires adequate nutrient availability to grow and thrive. Picking the right fertilizer source is one of the best ways to get those nutrients to the plants. While fertilizers deliver the nutrients as separate granules, MicroEssentials and its patented Fusion® technology combine N, P and S to ensure uniform nutrient distribution across the field. Uniform nutrient distribution is especially important with micronutrients like zinc, found in MicroEssentials® SZ ™. The proven formula delivers vital nutrients to each and every plant, resulting in higher yields and higher profitability.
Importance of Two Forms of Sulphur MicroEssentials S15 contains two forms of S (sulphate and elemental sulphur), which are important to have available to the plant for the entire growing season. Sulphate sulphur is available to the plant immediately, while elemental S slowly oxidizes and becomes available later in the growing season. This helps provide the late-season requirements for spring wheat and canola.

In the early growth stages, young seedlings need the proper amount of P to reach their full potential. Phosphorus is not only essential for early-season growth and development, but it is also needed throughout the growing season. MicroEssentials’ Fusion technology provides a slight pH decrease around the granule that promotes the formation of dihydrogen orthophosphate and, in turn, increased P uptake into the plant.
Boosting Yields and ROI MicroEssentials helps increase both yield and profitability. Research suggests that up to 60 percent of yield depends on providing adequate balanced crop nutrition. MicroEssentials retailers are equipped with the latest information, data and tools to help you better understand what we can do for your operation and ROI.

The first Rock the Road street hockey tournament in downtown Camrose was a success with 16 entered in various age groups. Clockwise from top right, trophies and medals were on the line in the tournament held on Sept. 3. Bottom, the Ducks goalie searches for the ball after making a save; members of the Camrose Kodiaks cooked and served hot dogs and hamburgers, while the tournament was played; the Oilers battled the Leafs in the younger age group; a goal was scored after a fierce battle in front of the net. Organizers of the event, Downtown Camrose and the Kodiaks, are hoping to continue the event next year with more teams.

Seat belts save lives in Alberta By Murray Green
The use of occupant restraints reduces both the likelihood of sustaining an injury and the severity of it. Research and collision investigations show that seat belts increase the chances of survival in a collision by 50 per cent. According to Transport Canada, almost 35 per cent of drivers and passengers killed in collisions were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. In Alberta, the law requires that all occupants travelling in a motor vehicle use a seat belt or child safety seat that is properly worn and adjusted. Properly used seat belts can reduce fatal and serious injury by 45 to 65 per cent depending on the type of vehicle and seating position,” shared Becky Oxton, regional traffic safety consultant to Alberta Transportation. The fine for not using a seat belt or child safety seat is $155. Drivers are responsible to ensure that all passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured using either a child safety seat or
seat belt. Drivers may be fined for each unrestrained passenger under the age of 16. Seat belts save about 1,000 lives per year in Canada. Seat belts distribute the force of a collision evenly to the stronger parts of a person’s body. In a crash, a vehicle travelling 50 kilometres per hour comes to an abrupt stop in 1/100th of a second. At 50 kilometres per hour, an unrestrained person, weighing 80 kilograms (176 pounds), will strike whatever they hit first with a force of 2,785 kilograms (6,215 pounds), according to Oxton. Airbags are a supplemental protection and only function properly if the occupant is restrained in a proper position by a seat belt. Airbags deploy at an explosive speed and can cause injury if the occupant is not properly positioned. Vehicles are designed with an engineered life space or passenger compartment that can withstand the force of most impacts. Continued on page 28

Children should remain in their forward facing seat until they reach the maximum weight and height allowed for their seat. Children under nine years of age who weigh between 18 and 36 kilograms (40 to 80 pounds) or are less than 145 cm (4’9”) tall are safest in a booster seat when riding in a vehicle. Without a booster seat, a child is three and a half times more likely to suffer a significant injury. Children under the age of 12 are safest in the back seat of a vehicle in proper restraints based on their age, height and weight. Seat belts should be worn all the time. You cannot control everyone else’s behaviour on the road. Seat belts dramatically increase your chances of survival in a collision, regardless of who is driving the other vehicle. The seat belt should be positioned securely across the hip bones, across the centre of the chest and across the shoulder. Never put the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back. In a collision this could cause fatal injuries. A driver with a Graduated Driver’s Licence cannot transport more people in a vehicle than there are seat belts. Sharing seat belts is dangerous as occupants will hit each other during a collision, increasing the likelihood of serious injury. Always follow the weight and height guidelines in the manufacturer’s instructions when deciding to change children’s car seats. Even if a child’s
feet are touching the back of the vehicle seat in a rear facing restraint, it does not mean they should be moved to a forward facing seat. Although it is not recommended, a secondhand car seat can be used. Check the expiry date for the seat, ensure that it has not been used in a collision, and make sure that all parts are present and are in good condition. Booster seats position the seat belt over the strongest bones in the child’s body. They help position the lap belt across the bones of the hips, not across the soft abdomen. They also place the shoulder belt across the chest, preventing the upper body and head from moving forward during a collision. Preg nant women should still wear a seat belt because they are the best protection for both mother and unborn child. Pregnant women should sit as upright as possible with the shoulder belt across their chest above the belly and the lap belt low, so that it pulls downward on their pelvic bones and not on their abdomen. In today’s world of high tech gadgets and machines that can run an entire business at the touch of a screen, taking time to look back on how things used to run can be enlightening, not to mention very interesting. Camrose and District Centennial Museum will be celebrating the history of machines during Machinery Day on Oct. 1. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. welcoming guests to discover the village and see demonstrations. “There will be an old time threshing demonstration at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.,” said Camrose and District Centennial Museum coordinator Janine Carroll. “We will also have blacksmithing, rope making, old time handwork including tatting and smocking, machinery demonstrations, the steam engine, lots of tractors, and much more.” From noon to 1 p.m. Herb Krekoski will be featured playing the accordion accompanied by Bill Mattinson with vocals and playing the guitar. The event is free, however donations are always appreciated. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a blast from the past while gaining an appreciation for how things used to be done. Strilchuk informed council that the issue of palliative and end of life care is discussed at stakeholders meetings. “The one thing that was noted was a barrier in communication and the process. Now a lot of the stakeholders, such as Bethany Group, are at the table and able to give feedback. Councillor PJ Stasko asked when the virtual clinic is projected to begin and how it would work. Strilchuk said the model being considered is being presented in British Columbia and that Camrose PCN is working with that company on the logistics of a virtual clinic. “I would like to move on a pilot that would be ready for our business plan on April 1 at which time we would set the parameters for what that would look like.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland commented on the increase in mental health numbers. “We know this has been a challenge forever. What strategies do you see here in our community in addressing this increasing need for a different approach to mental health?” Strilchuk suggested three strategies which included continuity with the discharge of a patient between the hospitalist, the multi-disciplinary team and the PCN, direct referral for pediatric patients to Mental Health and Addiction, and a youth PCN model to focus primarily on youth at risk mental health including work with Augustana. Councillor David Ofrim asked if Strilchuk had any speculation on why the numbers in mental health were increasing. Strilchuk’s reply suggested that the economic downturn has affected those numbers to some degree, however she indicated the numbers are also the result of a growing and maturing community with a more diverse population. Councillor Bill Sears inquired as to the PCN’s specific use of the taxi subsidy program. Strilchuk indicated the majority of the program is being utilized by the prenatal program for getting patients to and from appointments. On a final note Strilchuk referred to a quality of life survey conducted on the chronic disease management patients. “It allowed us to take the scores of the patients completing that survey and turn it into a return on investment. Bergens share Kenya stories Submitted Eloise and John Bergen will be returning to Camrose Sept. 15 to 18. The Camrose Church of God is looking forward to hosting this amazing couple as they continue telling their story of love for God and love for their enemies. Their presentations will inspire and challenge all who will hear them. In 2008, the Bergens were serving as volunteer Christian missionaries in Kitalie, Kenya. One night, four months after their arrival, eight machetewielding men broke into their home and viciously attacked them. John, 70 at the time, and Eloise, 65, both suffered multiple lacerations and broken bones. The couple was working with the Kelowna, B.C.-based group Hope for the Nations when the assault took place. The attackers bound Eloise and held a machete to her throat, while John was attacked outside the house. “When I was going through the ordeal, I had all my wits about me. My mind was very clear, I was very calm; it was just like Jesus Christ was right beside me,” she said. “I wasn’t conscious of overwhelming fear, I was just conscious that I must do what they told me to do
and I must remain calm and have my mind about me so I would know how to cut myself free and so that I could figure out how to save my husband.” Despite being brutalized and abused, Eloise was eventually able to free herself, and begin searching for her husband who had been left for dead by the attackers. She found him in nearby bushes. Eloise then managed to get him into their car and drive him to the Hope for the Nations compound. Both were then taken to a hospital and later airlifted to Nairobi. Shortly after the ordeal, son Lance Bergen informed news agencies, “My dad told me that he wants to stay in Kenya the rest of his life.” The Bergens recount this part of their story in their book Forgiveness in the Face of Terror. Since 2008, the Bergens have returned numerous times to Kenya, first to face their attackers in court and then to visit them in prison to extend forgiveness to them. They have expanded their work in Kitale by developing a very productive growing project that enables them to feed hundreds of orphans each day. They have also begun serving in
similar ways in the country of Haiti. Eight years since the attack, the Bergens show no sign of slowing down from their work or travel. They will be passing through Camrose as part of an ambitious speaking tour of Western Canada before their return to Kenya. Some highlights of their visit to Camrose will include a public presentation on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. John will re-tell some of the details of their harrowing experience as part of an address called “Emotional Healing in the Absence of Justice.” On Saturday morning, Eloise will speak to a ladies’ brunch about overcoming abuse. At a Saturday evening dessert and dialogue session, the Bergens will offer a symposium on the mental, emotional and spiritual keys to surviving trauma, based on Dr. Caroline Leaf’s book, Who Switched Off My Brain? This event will be catered by the staff at the Camrose Golf Course Clubhouse. The public is invited to attend any or all of these events at no charge. More information is available by calling the Camrose Church of God at 780-672-3461.

The ladies of Messiah Lutheran Church and members of Messiah’s Wednesday Workers presented a thank you banner to the staff of Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre for years of delivering boxes of quilts and other materials to Canadian Lutheran World Relief in Winnipeg.
The ladies from Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose teamed up with the Christian Caring for Children and Retired Teachers groups in Kingman to send 32 boxes of quilts, baby bundles, personal items for men and women, educational materials and sewing kits to Winnipeg. “They will go to Canadian Lutheran World Relief, and from there to places in the world where there is great need,” said Lavona Broen, who coordinated the Messiah ladies’ efforts. “Wherever there is a crisis that is where they go.” The boxes were shipped at no charge by Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre. “Home Hardware handles the shipments right across Canada for all the churches and charities that contribute to CLWR,” said Broen. “The
Home Hardware in Camrose has been doing it for as long as it has been in existence.” The boxes were delivered to Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre by Messiah’s Wednesday Workers, a group of approximately 10 that gets together to carry out odd jobs. The Messiah Lutheran Church ladies meet every two weeks both to make quilts and enjoy fellowship. “I think the women find being part of this group very fulfilling,” said Broen. “They have the knowledge that they are contributing to a good cause and they are able to use their imaginations and be creative. I see it as having a double purpose, not only for ministry outreach but also ministry amongst ourselves.” The finished quilts were laid over the pews at a Mes-
siah church service at which they were commissioned before being sent away. “I think we had more than 100 quilts that were sent (to CLWR) this time,” said Broen. “The 32 boxes that were filled this time are about average for what we have done in the past.” CLWR believes that working in partnership is fundamental and essential to its work. “Mutuality, respect and participation characterize CLWR’s partnerships with churches, local organizations, funding agencies, international organizations, groups and individuals,” says the CLWR website. “CLWR is committed to being accountable to partners, including donors, by acting in a transparent manner in all endeavours.”

On July 28, 1951, she married John Blawuciak and lived on the family farm. Helen loved the farm where some days she had to be the mechanic or the vet. She loved all animals, especially cats and her dog Benji, and she loved hearing the hummingbirds and canaries sing. In October 2014, she moved to Camrose and lived there until her passing at Bethany Meadows on September 7, 2016. Helen is survived by her special daughter Wendy Blawuciak of Camrose; brothers George (Maxine) Sych of Hay Lakes and Ignace (Tillie) Sych of Hay Lakes; sister Evelyn (Orest) Eveneshen of Edmonton; brother-in-law John Poniewozik; and a host of relatives, friends and neighbours. October 8, 1919 ~ August 7, 2016 Isabel was born on October 8, 1919, the first daughter for John and Amelia Noullett at Bawlf, Alberta. She passed away on August 7, 2016 at the age of 96 years. She grew up in the Bawlf area and lived with her family for some time at the Keystone Ranch. Isabel attended Oak Park School. On June 22, 1942, she married Leander Lang. They were married for 53 years. They first lived and worked in Camrose and in 1951, they bought farmland at Heisler. She worked so very hard alongside Leander milking cows, raising chickens, growing a huge beautiful garden, cooking meals, canning jars and jars of pickles, fruit and chicken. She made sure we had plenty to eat, along with a clean, warm home in which to grow up. Isabel’s perfect buns became known as Gramma Buns! She was active in the CWL for many years. She loved playing cards and often brought home the trophy from a card tournament. She was there to guide and encourage us in our activities, cheering for Gerry at ball games. Isabel always had good advice for Jane in her 4-H years. Isabel and Leander moved to Daysland in 1972 and she worked at Daysland Hospital from 1972 to 1984. They moved to Camrose in 1985. Leander passed away in 1995. She was the best Gramma to her treasured grandchildren Clint, Aimee, Shane, Desiree and Dillon. She loved them and they knew it! Her great-grandchildren Keston, Katie, Christian, Annabelle, Naomi, Alessio and Airik would come to visit her and her eyes would light up and she would smile and hold the babies. Along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is survived by her son Gerry (Shirley); her daughter Jane; daughterin-law Helen; sister-in-law Angie; brother-in-law Gunner; and numerous nieces and nephews. Isabel was predeceased by her husband Leander; parents John and Amelia; special friend Joe; son-in-law George; brothers Joe, Jerry, Tony, Johnny, Leo and Ed; and sisters Margaret and Louise. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, August 12, 2016 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Camrose, AB. Father Joseph Jacobson was Celebrant. Interment followed. Her family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers at Willow Cottage, Bethany for the love, respect and time spent with Mom. Thank you to the CWL for the tasty lunch, to Father Joseph for making her service so truly special, along with the Keech choir – your music was beautiful. Thank you to Delores, Pat and Kevin for being with us along Mom’s journey. To each and every one of you who hugged us, brought us cards, sent beautiful flowers and shared your memories about time spent with Mom – thank you. Thanks to Tyler and Karen at Weber Funeral Home for giving the utmost care and attention to Mom and each of us. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the CWL for standing in honor of Mom at her service, along with everyone who participated in a special way. Mom would have loved it and would have said, “What a nice day that was.”

June 18, 1936 ~ September 3, 2016 Ted, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on Saturday, September 3, 2016 in Bethany Meadows at the age of 80 following a long struggle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Ted was born on a farm in Groessen, Holland on June 18, 1936. He was the sixth of ten children born to Everdina and John Peters. In 1953, Ted immigrated to Canada with his family to start a new life after the war. He worked hard beside his family and they all learned English and found their paths in Canada. Eventually, he found his way to a long career as a grain buyer working in the New Sarepta, Hay Lakes and Camrose areas. He maintained close relationships with the Peters family throughout his life. Ted met Anna (Marrazzo) in 1965, and married her in 1967. He brought her out to New Sarepta to begin their married life. During that time, Ted and Anna were blessed with three daughters – Diana, Angela and Sandra. In 1975, Alberta Wheat Pool transferred Ted and his growing family to Hay Lakes. Robert came along and the family was complete. He was transferred again in 1992 to Camrose to complete his career in the grain industry, and he finally retired in 1998. He concentrated on his yard and being a full-time grandfather. Ted and Anna maintained an extensive garden and fruit tree selection throughout their lives, and they only got busier in retirement. Ted was either watching the crops in the fields or his gardens for over 45 years. Ted had a strong sense of community, family and faith; often these were combined in his volunteer service. As his family grew up in Hay Lakes, Ted was very involved with the Boy Scouts, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Hay Lakes community groups, and the church choir. This continued in Camrose as Dad developed a strong relationship with St. Francis Catholic Church parish council and various sub committees as well as the adult choir and the Knights of Columbus. Ted was busy in retirement as a volunteer in the church. He loved to sing in church and was often requested for special events. He was very proud of being an instrument of God’s will through his singing, hospital visits and volunteerism. Ted’s good will, humour and uplifting spirit were defining personal characteristics. He was immensely jovial and approachable to everyone. Whether he was with family, at work or in the community, Ted would tell a joke, laugh loud and smile often. He worked hard and was quick to help if asked, often with some jokes to lighten the day. Ted is predeceased by his parents Everdina and John Peters; Tony Peters (brother); and Frank (infant brother). He is survived by his wife Anna; four children Diana, Angela, Sandra and Robert; eight grandchildren Jayna, Jennifer, Luke, Megan, Aidan, Jacob, Katherine and Alyssa; four brothers Henry, John, Gerry and Frank; three sisters Mary, Aleida and Dorothy; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Prayer Vigil was held on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.
