Kodiaks back on winning ledger By Murray Green

Camrose Kodiaks played 40 minutes of great hockey to skate away with a 5-3 victory against the Olds Grizzlys on Sept. 27. The win snapped a two game losing streak. The Kodiaks dominated the first two periods and were up 5-1 prior to going into hibernation for the third frame. Mackenzie Bauer led the Kodiaks offence with two goals, while Estian Coetzee, Cooper Johnson and Liam Motley added single markers. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 52 of the 55 shots he was peppered with including facing 20 shots in the final period. The Kodiaks fired 36 at the Grizzlys cage. Camrose dropped two, one goal games on the road Sept. 23 and 24. The Kodiaks failed to

hold onto a 4-3 lead early in the third period against the Calgary Canucks. Calgary scored on a power play to even the match and scored just 39 seconds into overtime to gain the extra point. Kyler Kupka, Ryan Rebelato, Ryan Hartman and Bauer provided the scoring punch. Goalie Joey May turned away 35 of the 40 shots fired his way. Camrose had 28 shots on net. Camrose opened strong against the Okotoks Oilers and built up a 3-1 margin after 20 minutes. After an even second frame, it was all Okotoks in the third as they came back to win 6-5. Veteran Angus Scott collected a hat trick on offence, while Bauer and Kupka netted the first two tallies for Camrose.

BALLOON RELEASE

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The start of the Camrose Terry Fox Run was marked with the release of coloured balloons by Mayor Norm Mayer and participants at Stoney Creek Centre on Sept. 18. The run raised more than $2,600 with 36 participants on the cool windy day. The Terry Fox Run averages 70 to 80 participants and approximately $3,000.

Gora started in the net and stopped 26 of 32 shots. May then stepped in to block all four shots he faced. The

Kodiaks only mustered 22 shots at the Oilers. After two away games in Grande Prairie and Whitecourt, Camrose is back

home to host the Drumheller Dragons on Oct. 11 and Fort McMurray on Oct. 14. Both games have 7 p.m. start times.

Our Lady of Mount Pleasant honours Orange Shirt Day

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster On Sept. 29 Our Lady of Mount Pleasant staff, teachers and students along with some special guests recognized Orange Shirt Day in honour of Indigenous Awareness Day. Grade 11 Leadership student Angela Nagy thanked guest speaker Charlene Bearhead for her thought provoking presentation.

By Lori Larsen On Sept. 29 in recognition of Orange Shirt Day, officially Sept. 30, the staff, teachers and students of Our Lady of Mount Pleasant, along with special guests, honoured Indigenous Awareness Day. Under the guidance of facilitating teacher Kristy

Smith the Leadership students organized a morning of special guest speakers, a group photo and a blanket ceremony. Students sat on the gymnasium floor donning shirts worn in support of awareness for Indigenous people in what could only

be described as a sea of orange. The symbol of the orange shirt originated from a story told by a former residential school student, Phyllis Webstad. As a young girl in residential school Phyllis recalled having her brand new orange shirt, given to her by her grandmother, taken away from her. Speakers at OLMP included Elder Donald Johnson who gave an emotional account of his experience in residential schools, Elk Island Catholic Schools Board of Trustees chair Justine Wright and public speaker Charlene Bearhead. Bearhead gave an inspiring presentation to the intently quiet group focusing on the younger generation’s opportunity to be the people who make a different history within Canada. “Can we change what happened in the past? No,” remarked Bearhead “but we can change what happens going forward.” “Residential schools are an important part of our history because how do we move forward in a good way if we don’t know what we are moving from,” she added. Bearhead called the students to action on their own truth and reconciliation. “I am going to call on you because I think you are the ones that are going to make a difference. If

Square dancing has been around since the 17th century in England making its way into the hearts and feet of North Americans with early European settlers. A dance characterized by four couples (eight danc-

ers) arranged in a square, a couple on each side facing the middle, the dance is now widely associated with the image of cowboy dancing. For the members of The Rose City Square Dance Club, square dancing is a great way to get exercise

you teach young people the truth you don’t have to worry about teaching them about hope or action or doing something different when young people like yourself learn about the truth the first thing you say is “That’s not right, you can’t do that, that is not how you treat people and what are we going to do differently?”” Bearhead congratulated the students for wearing the orange shirts and show-

ing honour to the memory, resilience, and strength of Indigenous people. “You will make a different history,” she concluded. After the presentations the Junior High School students had the opportunity to participate in a Kairos Blanket Exercise, a teaching tool aimed at sharing historic and contemporary relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster As part of the ceremonies for Indigenous Awareness Day held at Our Lady of Mount Pleasant on Sept. 29 junior high school students spread blankets out to accommodate a ceremonial blanket exercise. Grade 10 leadership student Lukas Daley eagerly assisted in the exercise.

Gregorwich signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 9 to 15 Square Dance Week. In October, The Rose City Square Dance Club will be entering its 36th year of square dancing and invites residents to come in and see what the club is all about. On Oct. 14, at the Mirror Lake Centre from 7:30 to 10 p.m. the club will be kicking off the dance season with a dance and potluck dinner open for anyone to come and dance or watch and learn. Regular dances are held on Friday nights at the centre beginning Oct. 21. Lessons are also available. Anyone aged 12 years and up is welcome to join the club. Besides regular dances the club also participates in special dances during the year, visits other clubs throughout Alberta, and attends the annual Provincial Convention. Firefighters spark pre-schooler’s interest By Lori Larsen

The Camrose and District Pre-school paid a special visit to Camrose Fire Department on Sept. 29 and spent an hour with some of Camrose’s firefighters. Camrose Fire Department fire life safety educator Jeff Knopf greeted approximately 20 excited preschoolers, their teachers and a few parental guests. The tour began with a fire home safety video starring an energetic little robot. After the video the group continued the tour in the truck bay with a tutorial by firefighter Mike Kambeitz and firefighter Pat St. Dennis

on some of the equipment on the fire trucks and an opportunity to sit inside the big shiny trucks. No tour of a fire department would be complete without seeing a totally decked out firefighter in all the gear, and firefighter St. Dennis was more than willing to oblige, after which came an impressive demonstration of fire suppressing foam. All and all the tour was enjoyed by both children and adults and gave guests an opportunity to become a little more aware of the vital service our fire department provides.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Gearing up for a fire can be a hot and exhausting task as demonstrated by firefighter Pat St. Dennis during the Camrose and District Pre-School tour on Sept. 29. Four-year-old Abbigail Mulloy was a little apprehensive of the man in the noisy mask, but eventually warmed up to him.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson A balance of light and dark

Now that we’re on the other side of the autumn equinox, and the days are shorter than the nights, I’m thinking about light and dark. The past few weeks have also brought illness and death for people I treasure. Some days have felt “dark.” *** When I was little I was scared of the dark. I still remember that terrible walk from the light switch to the bed. I’d turn out the light, cross the bedroom floor and jump into bed from as far away as possible, so the monster hand didn’t reach out from under the bed and grab me by the ankle. I’d dive under the covers and peer out. The half-open closet door hid nameless shapeless terrors; unknown bad things, scary things that would ooze out and do harm. *** From an early age, I have preferred the light: daytime, rather than nighttime, sunny rather than cloudy. I have wanted to hide from, be protected from, turn away from, the darkness. At first, “darkness” meant simply the absence of physical light. As I grew older, “darkness” also acquired symbolic meaning – dark depressing emotions, dark ominous thoughts, dark evil actions. Anything I didn’t like was “dark.” *** And then one day, I was jarred. A friend from the west coast was visiting me on the prairies. We had, in my mind, perfect summer weather – sunshine every day, blue skies, bright and sunny. One morning it was grey, raining and overcast. I was disappointed. My friend came into the kitchen and said, “Oh thank God, a rainy day. I was so tired of that relentless sunshine!” It had never occurred to me that light could be “relentless.” *** When I remember painful experiences, many were prolonged unnecessarily because I kept myself “in the dark” about things I didn’t want to see. Some of those things were external – events and people around me. When I was willing to look deeply, most of those things were also internal. At the root, what I did not want to see within myself kept being reflected back in the outside world until I was courageous enough to let myself see it, or I was forced into seeing it because I had turned away for so long that a niggle became a crisis. Paradox: I had to go into the darkness to see the light. Barbara Brown Taylor made the point eloquently: “…when, despite all my best efforts, the lights have gone off in my life…I have not died. The monsters have not dragged me out of bed… “Instead, I have learned things in the dark that I could never have learned in the light, things that have saved my life over and over… “There is really only one logical conclusion. I need darkness as much as I need light.” *** On this planet we have light and dark in equal measure. No matter where we live, at whatever latitude, over the period of a year we experience the same number of hours of light and dark. Perhaps there’s a message here. Darkness has gifts. In the darkness, we can rest. In the darkness, seeds begin to sprout and grow roots and leaves. In the darkness, dreams are born. In the darkness, ideas can percolate and take shape. If we are willing to explore the darkness, we discover gifts we cannot imagine when we are blinded by the light. *** So how do we walk in the dark? Carefully, gingerly, gently at first, feeling our way. How do we learn to walk in the dark? Two favourite quotes provide a hint. First the hard part, the courageous part (from David Whyte): Start with the first thing close in, the step you don’t want to take. And then the hope (from Patrick Overton): When we come to the edge of all the light we have known, And step into the darkness of the unknown, We must believe one of two things will happen: Something will come up to meet us Or we will be taught to fly. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. We were driving west on Highway 13 Sept. 26 from Camrose to Wetaskiwin when a trailer door flew off a truck and trailer heading east. My husband took evasive action as it would have come through the windshield

that this is a scam and that at no time will a STARS representative request payment for delivery of a prize won in the STARS Lottery. “This one has been around for quite a while, but we have seen an increase in this scam and some of our citizens have been deceived by these smooth talkers,” warned Camrose Police Service Constable Kelly Bauer. Police advise residents to remember these important tips in order to protect themselves from these types of scams. Legitimate lotteries will

never require you to pay a fee or tax to collect winnings. Never send money to anybody you don’t know or trust. Ask yourself; “Did I even enter this contest?” You cannot win if you didn’t enter. Nominations have been received from the community for businesses and individuals they feel are most deserving in the following categories; Small Business of the Year Award (25 or less employees), Business Excellence (over 26 employees), Home Based Business of the Year, Franchise and Corporate Business Award, Community Spirit Award (available to not-for-profit and all business), Customer Service Excellence Award (individual award) and Ambassador Award (of the community also an individual award.) “In order to qualify businesses have to have three years of success in Camrose behind them,” said Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce executive director Sharon Anderson. As for the individual awards of Ambassador and Customer Service there is no year limit. “Somebody who is new to the community and who has been outstanding could have been nominated,” added Anderson. The voting will take place on Oct. 17 by a panel of a minimum of nine judges consisting of past winners and a few past directors of the board who are knowledgable in the process. The winners will be

announced during the semi-formal ceremony held on Oct. 20 at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort and Casino. “Everybody is welcome to come to the awards dinner and help celebrate business excellence in our community,” remarked Anderson. The celebratory evening will consist of a savory dinner, local entertainment and the engaging commentary of Master of Ceremony Police Chief Darrel Kambeitz. Other special guests include Alberta Chamber of Commerce vice-president Shauna Feth, MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose Bruce Hinkley and Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer. “It is a celebration of local businesses and individuals,” said Chamber director and Re/Max Real Estate agent Trevor Vinet. “We are proud to say Camrose is still thriving, and growing and participation in an event like this is indicative that Camrose remains an anomaly with a very strong business community.” The One Less Trip initiative which encourages residents to shop local, supports the continued effort of keeping the Camrose region a successful and flourishing business community. The evening is an opportunity for all community members to come out and show their gratitude for the businesses available in their own backyard. Tickets for the Oct. 20 Small Business Dinner are available at the Camrose Chamber office located at 5402-48 Avenue, telephone 780-672-4217.

Reported cougar sightings investigated By Lori Larsen

Recently there has been some concern about possible cougar sightings in and around Camrose. District Fish and Wildlife officer Lorne Rinkel has been diligent in investigating the matter and reported that there have been three confirmed sightings. The first and second sightings occurred on July 26 and Sept. 8 in the Stoney Creek drainage area and the third, most recent, occurred on Sept. 24 in the Bittern Lake area. “Regarding the Sept. 24 sighting, the cougar had killed a deer in the Bittern Lake area,” said Rinkel. “However, the cougar did not show any signs of aggressive or threatening behaviour towards people.” In the instances of the previous sightings in Camrose the cougar again did not display any signs of aggressive or threatening behaviour. Rinkel added that there have not been any further sightings or reports of sightings in Camrose and that it would appear the cougar has moved on with no negative encounters. As for the cougar in the Bittern Lake area, the deer carcass is gone and there have been

no further reports of cougar sightings. At this point Fish and Wildlife has no plans to directly respond unless an incident escalates to involve contact with humans, pets or livestock. Sightings of cougars in Camrose and area are possible as, true of any wild animal, they follow food sources which, in the case of cougars, can consist of deer, rabbits and game birds. “Cougars will follow the deer into town and there are deer all over Camrose,” said Rinkel. To avoid encounters Fish and Wildlife strongly encourage residents to not feed the wildlife and avoid putting any attractants out such as dog food, grain, birdseed and uncontained garbage. Cougar tips

While it may be possible to sight a cougar in our area the likelihood of an encounter is somewhat slim, however Rinkel offers some tips in the event of either a sighting or encounter. “If you should have an encounter you will know right away if the cougar is displaying signs of aggression or threatening behaviour,” said Rinkel. Similar to a house

cat, when preying upon or stocking prey a cougar will generally crouch down, close the distance between itself and prey, fixate on the prey’s eyes, and possibly be twitching its tail. “If you see a cougar at a distance it will likely disappear, but if you encounter a cougar where it is displaying some of these predatory behaviours it’s time to take action,” said Rinkel.

Rinkel suggests the following tips: Never turn your back on a cougar and maintain eye contact with the cougar. “A cougar’s predatory prey response can be triggered by the prey breaking eye contact,” explained Rinkel. “That is what the cougar is waiting for – the break of eye contact and turning and running.” Make yourself appear

large by raising your arms or, if in a group, huddling together. Make as much loud noise as possible. “While looking big and being noisy, slowly back away and keep backing away to what you determine to be a safe distance, then get out of there,” he commented. Keep pets on a leash at all times outside of your own property. Protect small children by ensuring their whereabouts at all times if there is report of a sighting in an area you and your children frequent. If an attack should occur, and the likelihood is rare, Rinkel advised not to play dead, but to fight in any manner possible. “If people are out and walking about and they come across the carcass of an animal, which may be visible or simply foul smelling, get out of the area and notify Fish and Wildlife immediately. Cougars will normally bury or cover up their kill and they will return,” warned Rinkel. To report any wildlife concern contact Camrose Fish and Wildlife at 780679-1225 or Report a Poacher at 1-800-642-3800.

Fire Prevention Week proclaimed

Like light passing through a prism, colour enters our lives in ways both predictable and unexpected. Colour can reflect or change our mood, and it can instantly conjure memories of a particular event or season. On a more practical level, most of us expect that consumer items, from cars to cell phones, will be available in different Deanna V. Mason, colours. Colour adds a cerEnglish, Augustana tain, well, colour to our lives. Campus, University of Alberta Colour also filters into an array of disciplines in multifaceted ways. In the natural sciences, colour influences the perpetuation of species and is often crucial to their survival, and changes in colour are often used as indicators of chemical reactions. Political parties, governments, sports teams, and other groups frequently use colours—and the varied cultural associations they have accrued—to create a sense of identity and define “insiders” and “outsiders.” Colour is also intimately connected with constructions of racial and ethnic categories and continues to be used as a marker of “difference” and a basis for racism. In many disciplines, colour is an aesthetic consideration. Artists, authors, and film directors use colour as a motif in their work, and musicians compose pieces inspired by colour. Lastly, underpinning all of these facets of colour is the fact that what we see of colour is not an external reality but a subjective reaction based on the brain’s calculations and our own perceptions. This year Augustana has chosen colour as its annual theme. There are a number of events and faculty talks that we are planning, to which everyone is warmly invited. Faculty will be speaking about a wide range of issues within the colour theme. We will hear about the basic physics of colour and how different colours are produced. We will also learn how colour combinations make the Rubik’s Cube so frustrating and how colour plays a role in the study of subnuclear particles. A mathematics talk will address a question known as the four-colour problem. Are four colours sufficient for making a geographical map such that no two regions sharing a common boundary on the map, no matter how complex, have the same colour? Another talk will provide an overview of how the brain calculates colour. This approach goes well beyond the conventional theory about how we see colour. Some of you may remember the Second Thought column by Professor Tim Parker on the infamous blue-and-black (or was that gold-and-white?) dress that was the focus of much media attention last year. Fine Arts professors will also give talks on the aesthetics of colour. We will learn about the history of colour in art and film culture and, in particular, the use of colour to create a depth of darkness and an expression of threat and peril. In addition, the music division is sponsoring concerts and lecture recitals devoted to the notion of “musical colour,” including a performance at the Lougheed Centre’s Cargill Theatre by singer-songwriter and motivational speaker Garth Prince, who was raised in Namibia. As you can see, the Theme Committee is planning many colourful occasions. Please consider this your invitation to attend these events. More information about the dates of the faculty talks and theme events can be obtained by visiting www.augustana.ualberta.ca/theme or calling the reception desk at 780-679-1100. See you on campus!

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer, left, with City of Camrose Fire Department Fire Life Safety Educator Jeff Knopf, right, as witness, signed the official proclamation declaring Oct. 9 to 15 Fire Prevention Week. By Lori Larsen

More often than not people don’t think of the Fire Department until they hear of or are involved in an incident that requires emergency services; however, besides being a vital emergency service, the fire department also takes the job of awareness and education very seriously. For decades fire departments within Canada have been recognizing Fire Prevention Week as a method of building awareness and educating the public on the importance of fire safety and prevention. This year, by proclamation Mayor Norm Mayer on behalf of the City of Camrose council and with the Camrose Fire Department Fire Life Safety Educator Jeff Knopf as witness, signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 9 to 15 Fire Prevention Week.

The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is Don’t Wait - Check the Date. Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years. “Time and again, I’ve seen the life-saving impact smoke alarms can have in a home fire,” said Knopf. “That’s why we’re making a concerted effort to educate Camrose residents about the overall importance of smoke alarms, and that they do have a 10-year life limit.” According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) most Canadian homes have at least one smoke alarm but may not be aware of the age of them. The National Fire Alarm Code requires smoke alarms be replaced at least every 10 years. Smoke alarms that have expired put people at risk. This year’s Fire Pre-

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Fire Department Fire Life Safety Educator Jeff Knopf, left, and Canadian Tire store owner Dave Jewell, right, ensure the store is well stocked in smoke alarms and batteries in preparation for the upcoming Fire Prevention Week and the Don’t Wait-Check the Date campaign. Canadian Tire will be donating batteries for the Oct. 11 event involving smoke alarm testing and battery exchange in the area of 44 to 50 Street between 46 and 48 Avenue.

vention Campaign is aimed at educating the public on the critical importance of knowing the age of their smoke alarms and subsequently replacing them if they are past the expiration date. The Camrose Fire Department will be hosting a week of activities in support of Fire Prevention Week. On Oct. 11, there will be Neighbourhood Smoke Alarm Testing in the area of 44 to 50 Street between 46 and 48 Avenue sponsored by the local Canadian Tire. On Oct. 12, the Camrose Great Escape will take place where all residents are encouraged to participate in the city-wide fire drill. Firefighters will be driving throughout Camrose and giving out prizes for participating families. Be at your meeting spot at 6 p.m. to participate. On Oct. 16, a pancake breakfast will be held at the Camrose Fire Department between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Along with these activities the Camrose Fire Department Association partnered with Wild Rose Co-op will be distributing free smoke detectors alarms to Grade four students within Camrose to be placed as needed in their homes. To determine the age (expiration date) of your own smoke alarms look on the back of the device where the date of manufacture is marked. The device should be replaced 10 years from this date not the date of purchase. Camrose Fire Department encourages residents to conduct monthly tests and replace batteries once a year ( or when the device begins to chirp) on all smoke alarms in the home. For more information on smoke alarms, or the 2016 Fire Prevention Campaign visit www.camrose.ca or telephone 780-672-2906.

CCHS Trojans edged by Rebels in two-point game By Murray Green

The Camrose Composite High School Trojans football team lost a heartbreaker 21-19 to the Rocky Mountain House Rebels, Sept. 23. “The Trojans defence stifled the Rebels rushing attack holding them to under 100 yards on the ground. However, the Rebels went to the air throwing for 278 yards edging us out for the win,” said coach Adam Belanger. Rocky Mountain House scored first on a pass play to go up 7-0. CCHS running back Dorian Gibbs broke free and ran for an 80 yard touchdown to bring the Trojans back into the game. The point after attempt by Chandler Barore went wide. The Rebels added another touchdown through the air and added the convert to put them up 14-6 with 53 seconds left in the opening half. Gibbs struck again with a 40 yard kickoff return to put the Trojans into good field position. Five plays later Griffon Lorenz scored on a quarterback sneak behind centre Shane Bowles. “Bowles was playing his first game as centre taking over for the injured Jayden Neuman and played excellent rising to the challenge,” said Belanger. The two point convert attempt was unsuccessful for a 14-12 score at the half. In the second half, the first drive from the Rebels was stopped when the throw went off the receivers hands right to Tro-

jan Barore. He squeezed the interception and returned it deep into the Rebel territory. Rocky Mountain House tightened the defence and the Trojans were held to a field goal attempt that went wide for a single point. Trojans quarterback Lorenz ran outside on the Rebels defence and had a key block from receiver Aiden Brown, to burst down the

sidelines for a 45 yard touchdown run. However, the two point attempt was no good. It gave the Trojans their first lead of the night 19-14. Defences stiffened on both sides of the ball, but the Rebel passing attack struck again late in the fourth quarter and with a successful point after the Rebels were back on top for good, 21-19. CCHS tried a fake punt

that didn’t fool the Rebels, but a big defensive stand gave the Trojans the ball back with under two minutes to play. Matt Harland hauled in a 35 yard pass from Lorenz bringing the Trojans into Rebel territory, but the Trojans were unable to convert with no timeouts left. The Trojans host the Wetaskiwin Sabres on Oct.

21 at 7:30 p.m. in the next home game. CCHS travels to Drayton Valley for a 4 p.m. contest on Oct. 7 and to Ponoka for a game against the Broncs on Oct. 13 for a 4 p.m. start in away contests. Division playoffs are slated for Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 to determine a champion. Provincial playoffs are slated for Nov. 11, 18 and 25.

Skjaveland garners four medals at Canada 55 Plus Games By Murray Green

Ferintosh athlete Darryl Skjaveland entered four events in athletics and came home with four medals. The local athlete led Alberta to a second place finish among provinces in the team event. “Alberta had 78 people on the team that received 63 gold, 42.5 silver (includes a tie) and 22 bronze medals for a total of 127.5,” shared Skjaveland. “Ontario had 596, more than twice what we had. Saskatchewan was third and we had a lot of competition against Saskatchewan.” Skjaveland qualified for the national Summer Games in Brampton, Ontario (July 16 to 19) after winning two medals in the provincial version of the event last year. He entered long jump, triple jump, discus and shot put. “I happened to get silver in all four events. I could have gotten a gold in triple jump, but I had a sore leg and couldn’t get my speed up. I pulled my hamstring, but there are no excuses,” said Skjaveland. “We were camping and I chased an 11-year-old child. I made about three steps and then started dragging. I didn’t do all of that training not to be in the Games. I pushed on and did quite well.” He enjoyed track back

in his high school days, so it was a natural fit for him to enter athletics. “In 2011, I was in Fairview at the Alberta Games. We went for a walk across the area where the track and field had been held. I didn’t even realize they had track in field in the Senior Games. I entered the Games in cycling,” explained Skjaveland. “At that point I made a plan to enter the Games. I couldn’t in 2013 because I was still working, so in 2015 it was in Strathmore and I entered track and field. I received a gold in long jump and a silver in shot put.” He just missed out medals in the javelin and discus. “By earning medals at the provincial games, I qualified to go to nationals,” he added. “Whoever has the most medals is asked first and down the line. Four people is the limit in athletes for the senior 55 plus division, so they pick the ones who have the best chance of receiving more then one medal,” he continued. “The fellow that received four medals opted out of going, so they went down the line and asked me to go. To go to Ontario is costly.” Skjaveland went from two medals in Alberta to four at nationals. “The competition is higher in Alberta

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Darryl Skjaveland collected four silver medals at the Canadian Senior Plus Games in Brampton, Ontario.

and I had a whole year to train,” said Skjaveland on his improvement at nationals. “I thought that I would be competing against eight to 10 people in each event, one from each province. My goal was to win a bronze. But, most events had four competitors. I trained hard because I didn’t want to go to nationals to just say I went. I

wanted a medal. I work out every second or third day, so I take it seriously.” He practices at least once a week at the Camrose Composite High School track facility. “I borrowed some equipment from the New Norway School for the Alberta games. I have since bought my own equipment.” He also set a personal

best at the Canada Senior 55 Plus Games. “I set my best distance in discuss at the Games. I didn’t in the other events because of my sore leg. I plan on going again if I qualify,” he said after gaining confidence in Brampton. “The province has Games on the odd years and the Canadian Games are on the even years.” The next Canadian Games are in the Maritimes. “That will be a trip as well as competing if I go,” he said. “This year was our 50th wedding anniversary, so we made a trip out of it too. We went to Niagara Falls and a couple of Toronto Blue Jays games.” He is trying to convince his wife Gail to enter javelin and compete at the same Games. She has entered her artwork in other Games in the past. “The part I really like about it is the fact that the people you are competing against are cheering you on. You try as hard as you can, but you feel bad that you beat them. In shot put, someone was always reminding me to walk out the back instead of the front. You are disqualified if you walk out the front. You become friends and have a lot fun.”

Turn back the clock, hear early rock By Murray Green

The Original Legends of Rock ‘n Roll will showcase the early music that launched rock in North America. Class of ’59 features Bobby Brooks Wilson in the touring cast that includes a show at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Wilson is a Motown entertainer who has a way of becoming the undisputed hit of any musical production he is part of. And, with Lance Lipinsky and Zachary Stevenson on the same concert that is really saying something. Wilson, known as Bobby Brooks back in the 1990s, broke into show business portraying Jackie Wilson in the original Waikiki production of Legends in Concert. He was discovered by a Legends in Concert talent scout who suggested he perform

a tribute to Jackie Wilson because of his uncanny likeness to the 1950s recording star. Audiences found him an unusually close natural look-alike, especially for a tribute artist and he went on to international success portraying the entertainer. Overcoming early foster care and personal tragedies that read like a work of fiction, Bobby Brooks never knew his father, much less that he was a famous father. Through various acts of fate, he finally met some of Jackie Wilson’s family members. After comparing family time-lines, it was discovered that Brooks could be the son of the late, recording artist Jackie Wilson. With the aid of one of Wilson’s family members, it was officially confirmed through a DNA test that Jackie Wilson was indeed his biological father. The Wilson’s have since accepted Bobby as family

and a new duet video featuring Bobby superimposed singing with his father is now in the works. Buddy Holly and The Killer will be playing guitar and piano, respectively, in the all-star Legends Band including Big Bopper on string bass along with guest performers such as Elvis, Bill Haley, the Everly Brothers and introducing Bobby Brooks Wilson as Jackie Wilson and Sam Cook. In 1959, the music was raw, pure and simple in a fun musical period. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive. ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances.

Derina Harvey Band returns with East Coast Kitchen Party By Murray Green

One of the highlights of the fall at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre will be the East Coast Kitchen Party featuring the Derina Harvey Band on Saturday, Oct. 8. A preview of the high energy Celtic rock sounds of the Derina Harvey Band were held on June 8 during the season launch. Although the band is now based out of Edmonton, they hail from Newfoundland and Labrador. Guitarist Scott Green, drummer Steve Pinsett and bassist Ed Smith are all from Newfoundland, while Harvey is from Labrador. The latest edition, fiddle player Matt O’ Connor, is from New Brunswick. “We came out here in 2002 and Steve (Derina’s husband) was already working in the music industry with some friends. I met all of these guys in college and hadn’t seen them in a while. We got together to form a band,” recalled Harvey. “My mother’s maiden name is Murphy, so I had to follow my heart with Celtic music. She asked me why I growl so much when I sing. My answer was that the story I’m telling requires me to growl and act that way to deliver the story as proper and with as much conviction as I can,” she explained. “My strong voice came from many rehearsals as a child.” A new cabaret format was an instant hit. “We have one additional show outside of the various series, the East Coast Kitchen Party. Because it is a limited seating show, 184

seats, we couldn’t include it in one of the series, we knew enough to know we had to have it,” explained Nick Beach, general manager of the Lougheed Centre. The Derina Harvey Band provided a sneak peek of what to expect during the party. It gave a real taste of her cabaret style show that is coming back on Saturday, Oct. 8. “I think it is fantastic that we had a live show to promote a concert in the fall,” added Beach. “It wasn’t until that I was about 14 that I realized not every family rehearses after supper,” she joked. “My dad has a very loud strong voice. So to sing with him or over him, I had to push to be heard.” She also inherited some high energy. “The way I look at it, I’m here to entertain you. Whether that is to make you laugh or cry, dance, or even distract you from a difficult time, that is what I want to do,” Harvey added. “We also love what we are doing and it shows.” The area music fans will be treated to a great show. “We have performed at preview shows before and it is a great way to know people, do an interview with you and get a connection when we come back. I’m excited to come back to Camrose, without a doubt. The room is beautiful, people are so nice and I can’t wait to meet more people,” Harvey said. “The staff are top notch, everything about the room is gorgeous (theatre) and it sounds fantastic.” The cozy East Coast Kitchen Party will feature a bar along with the great

music. “There will even be space for a little dance floor. It will be intimate, but at the same time high energy and I will have a few stories to tell. It will be fun.” That killer live show in June led to the fastest sellout of the season. If you were not one of the fortunate ones to obtain tickets, you are still in luck. The Derina Harvey Band will also be playing at the Heisler Community Culture Centre in Heisler on Nov. 3. The fundraising dinner for the Daysland and District Cultural Arts Society begins at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, or more information contact Sharon at 780-374-2403.

DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORIAL LECTURE

If there’s a goal that everyone remembers:

Social memory, Canada and competitive advantage by Dr. Bill Foster

Have you ever wondered why many Canadians think of the Timbit as a national symbol, while those south of the border give us a quizzical look when we refer to it as such? And why is it that The Tragically Hip is revered as the quintessential Canadian band, while never quite achieving a similar level of success around the world? Dr. Bill Foster’s lecture will discuss how Canadian organizations and groups strategically position themselves by reaching back into the past to create and build strong DR. BILL FOSTER relationships amongst customers and fans alike. Join us for an enlightening evening that will leave you thinking about more than whether your donut should be glazed or dipped the next time you’re in that drive-through line.

2017 Chevrolet Spark

An economical way to see the world

Tyler Pryor Sales Consultant By Murray Green

The Chevrolet Spark at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC will get you places on a budget. “The Spark is ideal for first-time buyers to get them started on the road to success. It offers great fuel mileage for city dwellers. It’s inexpensive, easy to drive and offers the latest modern technology,” said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC sales consultant Tyler Pryor. Young drivers understand the appeal of a subcompact car, especially if you are one of the millions of Canadians living in or near a crowded city centre. These cars are easy to park, inexpensive to own and will easily get you where you want to go. The Spark’s peppy 1.4-liter engine makes it the perfect miserly commuter car. The 2017 Spark primarily stands out for its technology-forward cabin that won’t strain your bank

Tyler Pryor Sales Consultant

account. Each Spark comes standard with a rearview camera, a 4G LTE hotspot and a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. On the Spark 2LT, you can also order an optional package to get lane departure warning and forward collision alert, two safety features not commonly found in this class of car. The Spark’s relatively long wheelbase contributes to its stability and smooth ride, as well as

nimble handling. If you’re looking for the best performance, the manual transmission may be the way to go. In the city, the Spark excels with its tight turning radius and very pa rk ing-space -f r iendly size. With so many people easily distracted by cell phones and other devices,

i t ’s nice to know the 2017 Chevy Spark can warn when the car is drifting from its lane or about to experience a front-end collision. The Spark’s layout consists of seating for four and a small space for groceries and gear behind the two rear seats. Those seats can be folded to expand cargo capacity from roughly 11 cubic feet to over 27. That’s more than enough to hold a few suitcases. More hip and shoulder room has increased over last year. Chevy’s little hatchback appears more proportional thanks to a lower roof and longer wheelbase. It features a larger grille and handsome headlight housings. Integrated handles high in the rear doors give the Spark a svelte, coupe-like profile. Audio enter tainment is provided by a four speaker sound system with USB input and Bluetooth streaming. Safety features include 10 airbags, rearview camera and a six month trial of OnStar Guidance with automatic crash response and roadside assistance. Upgrades includes power windows, keyless entry, cruise control,

steeringwheel-mounted audio buttons, theft-deterrent system and satellite radio. Topline 2LT models have a leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome exterior trim and rear-park assist. A power sunroof is offered on mid and top trims, while the top trim offers the Driver Confidence Package. An automatic transmission is available on all versions of the Spark. The standard transmission is a five speed manual. Most buyers will want an automatic and for that the new Chevy Spark uses a continuously variable transmission. Even though Dale Earnhardt Jr. had less horsepower to work with compared to his racing car (415 horses on his Chevrolet SS), he was able to smoke the tires on the Spark. See the Chevrolet Spark at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 3850-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Brenda Marie Busenius November 24, 1961 ~ October 8, 2015 God saw you getting tired, A cure was not to be. So He wrapped you in   His loving arms And whispered, “Come with  Me.” With tearful eyes,   we watched you, We watched you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped  beating, Hardworking hands at rest. God broke our hearts   to prove to us He chose to take the best. So many things have happened, Since you were called away. So many things to share   with you, Had you been left to stay. Sadness still comes over us, Tears in silence flow, Memories keep you ever near, Though you died one year ago. Love, Dad and family

In loving memory of

David Robert Sederquest February 11 1970 ~ October 7, 2010 Do not grieve for me, As the beauty of fall is in the air. Now that I’ve been gone for six sad years, That you have had to bear. Remember that I’ve only stepped Through that eternal door To the dawning of a brighter day. If you could only see the beauty that lays beyond that door, If you could feel the touch of my Master’s hand, You would want to come and walk here too. Still missing you, Mom

Thomas “Tom” Harvey Campbell January 11, 1924 ~ September 27, 2016 Thomas Harvey Campbell was born on January 11, 1924, in the home of his parents Vic and Miriam Campbell in the Ankerton district. He passed away peacefully at Lynnwood Long Term Care in Edmonton on September 27, 2016 at the age of 92 years. Tom spent his childhood on the family farm. He attended East Lynne School as a youngster, leaving school at age 14-1/2 to do the field work his father physically could no longer do. Tom and Doris were married on July 25, 1953 and started a farm north of his parents. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years Doris (Anderson); daughter Laura Morin and her son Andre Ladouceur (Chelsee); and sons Ross (Deborah) and their children Ryan, Jillian, Joel and Lauren, and Lorne (Judy) and their daughter Erin (Bryan) and son Bryce (Melanie); and seven great-grandchildren (Maycen, Kyden, Blaire, Alex, Rylee, Owen and Sterling). He is survived by siblings Victoria, Carol, David, Stewart, Rhondda and Lorna. Tom was predeceased by his parents; siblings Ralph, Alice, Bill, Bob, Miriam and Brian; and son-in-law Wayne Morin. After retiring from the farm in 1981, Tom and Doris moved into Rosalind and Tom was employed by the village. His duties included maintenance of village property, utilities and equipment. He was an avid community member, supporting and participating in the United Church, the Elks, the Drop-In and community events. Tom and Doris travelled extensively, going to Europe three times (once crossing the Atlantic by sea) and seeing most of the United States. Their true passion was exploring Canada, seeing the Queen Charlotte Islands in the west to the northern tip of Newfoundland in the east. They did not forget the rest of Canada, dipping their toes in the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk, seeing the polar bears at Churchill, and visiting many other Canadian destinations. Tom will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his family, friends and all who knew him. A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2016 from Rosalind Community Hall with Rev. Deanna Cox officiating. Interment has taken place in the Green View Cemetery. The University of Alberta Augustana Vikings men’s soccer team edged Grande Prairie 2-1 to garner its first victory of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season, Sept. 25. Augustana received goals from Jaeden Norton (30 minute mark) and Braeden McKenzie with the winner (73 minutes) to gain the points at home. Vikings goalie John Aitken stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced. The Vikings lost 6-2 to Concordia the day before. Norton garnered both goals (27 and 90 minute marks) to lead the Augustana offence. Aitken stopped six of 12 shots he faced. The women’s team lost two 5-1 games against Concordia and Grande Prairie. Angela Tan (72 minute mark) scored against Concordia, while Tara Berger (74 minutes) scored against Grande Prairie. Goalie Michele Greer stopped eight of 13 shots against the Wolves. Cross-country running

In the men’s event at Lakeland on Sept. 24, Matt Martin was the top Viking in third place in the ACAC event with a time of 29:29 minutes over eight kilometres. Erik Rust placed ninth, Reece Bailey was 17th, Sasha Eccleston was 18th, Brett Meyer was 22nd and Cameron Hutchinson

The Camrose Buffaloes bantam football club took on the Edmonton Seahawks at Kin Park in the second game of a home and home series on Sept. 25. The Seahawks came out strong seeking revenge on the Camrose win the week prior. The game ended with a final score 22-6 for the Seahawks. “Bantam player Dominick Charpentier played exceptionally well running for numerous first downs, while the guys on the line held their own against the larger Seahawks,” said Rejeanne Matson, spokesperson for the team. “Quarterback Lachlan Stevens showed great leadership during the game running numerous times to get the first down and threw a huge 10 yard pass to Drew Forester early in the fourth quarter who then took it down the field for a 40 yard touchdown,” said Matson. On Sunday, the peewee Buffaloes had their own rematch against the Wetaskiwin Warriors. The Warriors battled hard against the Buffaloes, but were unable to contain the Buffaloes offensive. In the end the Buffaloes won 30-8.

Peewee Buffaloes stop football Warriors “Each team made impressive kickoff returns for touchdowns, but due to penalties the runners were unable to put the points on the board,” said Matson. The atom Buffaloes took the field against the Fort Saskatchewan Storm and lost a close 2-0 match. The team is really starting to come together. “The atom defence did an excellent job making tackles, following the plays and showing good hustle. The atoms offense is still working out some kinks, but after losing their quarterback to injury early in the game, players stepped up and covered different positions. It was a great effort and showed great team spirit,” added Matson. Camrose teams are in the Capital District Minor Football Association league and play several home and away games. You can follow the Buffaloes or sign up for the team on the website http://www. camrosebuffaloes.com and receive more information. The next home series is on Oct. 16 at 12:30 p.m. with the peewee Buffaloes playing the Sherwood Park Sabrecats and at 3 p.m. the bantam Buffaloes host Fort Saskatchewan.

Annika Olesen came in 15th, Tayla Koerber was 16th, Katelynn Cook crossed the line in 17th, Leah Reid placed 18th and Daniella Burke followed at 19th. Augustana hosts a Grand Prix race on Oct. 15 at Stoney Creek Centre. Golf

Cieanna Hewitt of Augustana shot rounds of 87 and 91 for a total of 178 at the Raven Crest Golf and Country Club to place fifth in the women’s competition on Sept. 24 and 25. Teammate Darcie Benoit came in 14th. On the men’s side, Michael Harrison of Camrose fired rounds of 76 and 74 for a total of 150. He placed fifth, five strokes back of the leader. Chase Martin placed 16th with rounds of 77 and 85. Braden Clarkson with a 163, Colton Leslie with a 168 and Darion Geddes with a 176 rounded out the Augustana team. victory in the opening game of the season, Sept. 23. Augustana started the scoring in the first when Mitch McMullin connected in a Carter Danczak feed. The MacEwan Griffins tied it up in the first on a power play and that was enough to force the extra frame in the evenly played contest. Goalie Curtis Skip stopped 28 of 29 shots he faced in the contest. The Vikings directed 30 shots at the MacEwan net.

Augustana lost the rematch 4-3 in another overtime encounter. Matthew Martin, Scott Swiston and Connor McLaughlin replied for the Vikings to force overtime. Skip turned away 33 of the 37 shots fired his way. Augustana recorded 31 shots on goal. The first game against Portage was postponed due a problem with transportation. In Lac La Biche, Portage connected on four straight tallies to skate to a 5-2 victory on Sept.

29. After the Voyageurs scored first, Augustana stormed back with two goals from Cody Fiala and Zachary Kercz. A shorthanded marker early in the middle period sparked Portage and they also capitalized on Augustana penalties. Harry Fredeman was in net for the Vikings. The Vikings host Concordia in the EnCana Arena at 6 p.m. on Oct. 8 in their next home game.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

High incidence of theft in Camrose Sept. 15

Police received a call from an east end business reporting that their compound had been broken into and that the suspect(s) stole a truck from the yard. Police are still investigating this matter. Sept. 14

An employee of a westend business reported that a male had fled the store on foot with some stolen electronic equipment. With the assistance of store employees members located the suspect and arrested the Edmonton male for theft and possession of stolen property. The property had been dumped while the suspect was in flight and subsequently turned back over to the business. In a second report police received later on in the afternoon, another west-end business indicated they were looking through their video surveillance at a suspicious male that had entered the store and determined that the male may have taken a few items totaling $750.00.

Exceptional bungalow

Matt Banack By Lori Larsen

Purchasing a completely finished home in a well established neighborhood makes the transition of moving that much easier. This exceptional move-in-ready bungalow located in Century Meadows subdivision is just waiting for new owners. With four bedrooms, three bathrooms and close proximity to a school this would make the perfect family home. The home has lovely curb appeal with a neatly manicured lawn and landscaping. As you enter the home you will be delighted to see beautiful new hardwood flooring throughout the living room, hallway and main floor bedrooms. The large front window floods the living room with natural light which reflects beautifully off the soft pastel wall colours. The kitchen has plenty of cabinets and a large centre island for a convenient quick breakfast or setting out buffets for family gatherings. The spacious dining area allows entertaining to flow naturally from the kitchen through the garden door leading to a huge covered deck an ideal location to extend entertaining and enjoy anytime of the year. The master bedroom is large enough

to accommodate a king sized bed and has a three piece ensuite for home owner privacy. There are two more bedrooms and a four piece bathroom on the main floor as well as a convenient laundry space. The basement is completely finished and has an oversized family room a perfect location for a big screen television and a huge games room that would easily fit a pool table or could be petitioned to include another room. There is a fourth bedroom located in the basement, a three piece bathroom and another large room which could be converted to a fifth bedroom, craft or exercise room. Included in the purchase are the fridge, stove, built-in dishwasher, washer, dryer, window coverings, central vacuum and a garden shed. Downtown business window smashed Sept. 13

An employee at an eastend business reported that sometime over the weekend unknown person(s) entered their property and stole a diesel particulate filter from a vehicle at a value of over $6,000.00. Sept. 12

A west end business reported a shoplifting that was occurring at their location. Police attended and located a female who was stopped by staff after she attempted to leave the store with stolen merchandise. All the merchandise was recovered and charges are pending against the female suspect. Police were called to a west end residence after a caller reported a female

yelling outside of the residence. When police arrived they entered the residence and found a male inside that had been consuming alcohol contrary to his release conditions. A further search of the residence found a female hiding in the basement and she was also breaching her no alcohol conditions. Sept. 11

A call of an alarm was received at a downtown business. Upon arrival the front glass door to the business was found smashed and it appeared someone had entered the building. Police cleared the building finding no one and it appeared that nothing was missing from the business.
