Sahakarini supports several powerful projects By Murray Green
T he 16t h a n nu a l Sahakarini Loaves and Fishes dinner will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Norsemen Inn starting at 6 p.m. “Our theme for the year is Power of One, which is an interesting concept when you think about so many ways to talk about power. When an organization is willing to help others, you have to be sensitive to how you use the power of a first world country to walk with people. Our tag line is pipal power,” said Sahakarini vice-chair Gail Stolee. “Our partner in southern India is called Pipal Tree and they have started a Children’s College Soumya that we are supporting. It is for tribal children wanting to finish school, go on to college, or receive vocational training,” Gail explained. “These children are from people who have been displaced from the forest. The parents are farmers, but they are displaced because they are creating a national park, which is one good thing. As a result the children didn’t have a school to go to until this project was started.” The children go to school in a village and come home to receive tutoring and leadership training. “They learn more about agriculture and can help their parents. The program focuses on girls because they probably get married off at 13. This program helps them get through high school, which is about Grade 10 level here,” she added. “Once they reach high school they have a lot more choices and opportunities to improve themselves.” Sahakarini projects have helped in Colombia with small scale agriculture and protection of water

sources, in Uganda with the Iryango Widow’s Group agriculture for self sufficiency and in Tanzania with Shine, the women’s entrepreneurship and health project. Sahakarini partners with the Augustana Community Service Learning Program. Five students assisted
in creating a marketing and social media plan. Rebecca Berger is the president, Don Rebus is the treasurer and Carolyn Andersen is the secretary. Directors are David Edwards, Linda Gervais, Melissa Kennard, Jen Lindstrand, Varghese
Manaloor, Les Parsons, Maya Rathnavalu, Carly Angelstadt and Signi Bruner. In 2015, Sahakarini attracted 245 people to the dinner and raised about $33,000. The famous Sahakarini sandals travelled a lot last year and a story about
the sandal’s journey will be shared at the dinner. In m id- Ja nua r y Sahakarini will be having a Film and Speaker Festival. For more information, or to obtain tickets for the dinner email sahakarini@ gmail.com or phone 780672-8222.
Friends share love of music By Murray Green
Fusing classical and jazz sounds from University of Alberta Augustana classical pianist Milton Schlosser and electric guitarist Robert Renman has created wonderful music between these two Camrose friends. Classical and jazz meet in one of the most innovative concerts of the year at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. Camrose residents Milton Schlosser (classical piano) and Robert Renman (electric guitar) join forces to perform a concert marked by a fascinating contrast of styles, moods, and creative skills. They have known each other for more than 15 years after Robert, one of Alberta’s top runners, began coaching Milton for running halfmarathon races. They soon
discovered not only a mutual love of running, but of music. And, they discovered that they also shared a passion for education—Robert in the field of computer science and Milton in the field of classical piano. A joint research venture funded by the University of Alberta helped them develop a software program that allowed Augustana musicians to track their daily practicing over an entire year. This software was based on the one Robert had already developed for runners and which was successfully employed by Milton in his half-marathon training. Milton continues to be active as an instructor and performer based at University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus. Robert is successfully self-employed, having joined together his computer, instructing and perform-
ing skills to offer guitar lessons by video and webcam to a global audience. They will perform together and as soloists. As a duo, they can be heard in a variety of jazz and popular styles, including their own arrangements of Swedish folk songs where Robert grew up before coming to Canada. Milton will perform some classical piano works, including Beethoven’s famous Pathétique sonata (well-known for its beautiful slow movement) as well as three jazz preludes by George Gershwin. Robert can be heard as a soloist in styles extending from jazz to blues and funk. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive. ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson What I learned from doing puzzles
Okay, I admit it. I’m a puzzle junkie. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Ken Ken, logic puzzles, Jumbles – I love them all. It’s occurred to me that doing puzzles has some relevance to living life. The pattern In puzzles, as in life, there seems to be a pattern to finding solutions. First, you notice the easy things. You fill in the easy words, the easy numbers. That feels pretty good. Each time you add one more word or one more number, you notice something you didn’t see before. Each small answer reveals another small answer. You’re on a roll. (In projects and life, too, each step opens the door to something you couldn’t see before.) And then there’s the impasse. You’ve solved the easy parts. What’s left is not obvious. You look at it, re-read the clues, nothing jumps out at you. You’re stuck. Sometimes you pause, look away, look back, notice one small thing and you’re back on a roll. But sometimes, you really are stuck, stuck, stuck. I’ve learned that if “stuck” lasts more than a few minutes, the best thing to do is take a break. When I come back, I always see something obvious that I couldn’t see before. Nearly always that leads to a complete solution to the puzzle. Hah! Satisfaction. In life, in times of impasse, sometimes if you take a break, stop the struggle, let it go, something new emerges. When you’ve come to the edge of your capabilities, there’s value in backing away for a while. Optimum challenge In puzzles and in life, there’s an optimum level of difficulty. Easy enough to be solved, but not so easy that it’s boring or even insulting. Hard enough that it’s a stretch, but not so hard that it’s impossible and overwhelming. I find as I get more skilled at doing a certain kind of puzzle, I begin to seek a more challenging level. Not too challenging – just enough to add stimulation. In a book called In Over Our Heads, author Robert Kegan talks about how to foster young men moving from adolescent self-centeredness (appropriate and necessary for one stage of development) to the adult capability of looking after the well-being of others. Kegan talks about “an ingenious combination of challenge and support” (a phrase I love). To help yourself or another person grow to their next developmental level, set a challenge that’s somewhat beyond their competence zone and provide enough (not too much) support so they’re not overwhelmed. The challenge has to be worthy – something that means something to the person. This reminds me of teenagers who dislike reading, but pore over the driver’s manual to get a driver’s license – a worthy challenge. Too much of a good thing Doing puzzles is fun when it’s a short break. I know I’m in trouble when I have a looming deadline or a notnegotiable task I dislike, and I’m doing my fourth Sudoku on my way to a third crossword. Just as a few pieces of fudge are a delicious treat but eating half a pan of fudge makes you sick, a few puzzles are totally appropriate but doing too many begins to feel yucky. I’ve learned to tell the difference – when puzzles are a beneficial diversion, and when they are a crutch to fend off facing what needs to be faced. Puzzles can be addictive. That short burst of satisfaction on finding the solution requires the next short burst. The total mental absorption that blocks out whatever are the worries or responsibilities of the day can also be addictive. “Just one more” is a dangerous thought. In puzzles, as in life, even good things, used to extreme, create bad outcomes. That takes me to the Alcoholics Anonymous Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” “The wisdom to know the difference” is a gift of life experience – a puzzle solved. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com
Bashaw motel fire leaves one dead, sparks investigation By Murray Green
A Bashaw motel fire left one person dead and two others injured. Bashaw RCMP confirmed that there was graffiti damage to property on the premises of the Bashaw Motor Inn which was the casualty of a fire that occurred on Oct. 10. On Monday morning at about 1:15 a.m., Bashaw RCMP were called to the scene of a fire at the Bashaw Motor Inn. Fire services also attended and extinguished the fire. The scene was secured for investigational purposes. The inn was occupied at the time and three people were transported to hospital in serious condition. Investigators on scene at the Bashaw Motor Inn were able to search through some areas of debris and confirmed finding remains of one person. Because of f lowing water from a damaged water main, recovery of this unidentified body was delayed. An autopsy was scheduled for later in the
week to determine cause of death and identity. Three people were taken to hospital on Oct. 10. One person was released and the condition of the other two remain unchanged. At this time, police have no information to indicate if the mischief to property and the motel fire are related in any way. The RCMP’s major crimes unit and other RCMP support services were brought to the site to assist in the investigation. The RCMP are taking the precaution of considering this to be a crime scene until proven otherwise. At this time, the RCMP will not speculate on how the fire may have started, or on any of the evidence they may have collected thus far. The Bashaw Motor Inn is located off Highway 53, near Highway 21, south of Camrose. Wildrose Battle River-Wainwright MLA Wes Taylor heard news that racist vandals left hateful graffiti on the Bashaw motel before it burned.
“I’m beyond disappointed and heartbroken for the owners and residents of the motel, the Tiwana family, and for all those impacted from the loss of life as a result of the fire. “We in no uncertain terms condemn this act of hatred towards members of our community. I have been extremely encouraged with how our community has rallied around the Tiwana family and raised $8,000 for them in just two days. It’s the spirit of Albertans to come together during challenging times, and I believe our community will continue to reflect the very best of this spirit,” said Taylor. Anyone with information that might assist police in determining who is responsible for the graffiti, or what caused the fire is asked to call Bashaw RCMP at 780-372-3793. If you want to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), by internet at www. tipsubmit.com, or by SMS.

Alberta is a great place to invest in By Bruce Hinkley, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose
For this MLA update, I would like to touch on three topics: 1) the excellent economic statistics about Alberta’s top rank for best province to invest in (our two year recession is extremely difficult but in the bigger picture Alberta continues to be the favourite place for investors to put their money); 2) funding for urban and rural municipalities and 3) a reminder/update on the pollution penalty. Alberta still has Canada’s highest per capita investment. The Canadian average is $7,046/person, while in Alberta the average was $17,855/person (for 2015). In 2016, its currently at $15,541 (and rising)/person; down but still ahead, far ahead of every other province. B.C. is at $5,733/person, Saskatchewan is $11,541/person (Alberta is ahead because our economy is more diverse). Investment in Alberta’s non-energy sector, is higher than its ever been, reflecting the resilience of our general economy. Alberta Investment Management Corp (AIMCo) indicates that the Heritage Fund has not been raided. It’s investments are made by experts and not through backdoor dealing in cabinet. AIMCo boss Kevin Uebelein states “it is just a sensible, cautious redirection of capital to the home front in a time of need.” The Calgary and Edmonton District Labour Councils are advocates of additional taxation powers for Alberta’s municipalities. They state: “Due to mismanagement and austerity undertaken by previous governments, municipalities face a vast infrastructure deficit that is well beyond their fiscal capacity to manage.” The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA, contains 82 per cent of Alberta’s population) has identified a $26 billion infrastructure gap over the next 10 years: $7 billion for Calgary, $11 billion for Edmonton, $6 billion for cities and specialized municipalities, and $2 billion for towns. The Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) our government is delivering on will start to make up this infrastructure deficit. MSI funds can be used for municipal services, planning activities, assistance to non-profit organizations, repairs and maintenance of admin buildings, rehabilitation of capital assets, and a variety of small capital projects. The municipality of Millet received in total: $596,889. The municipality of Wetaskiwin received $2,838,662. Another source of funding is the Federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) which allows communities to do a variety of projects such as public transit, wastewater, infrastructure, drinking water, solid waste management, community energy systems, local roads and bridges, capacity building, highways, local and regional airports, short-line rail, disaster mitigation, broadband and connectivity, brownfield development, culture, tourism, sports and recreation. Camrose GTF: $972,483; Millet GTF: $112,786; Wetaskiwin GTF: $680,436. A third source of funding is the Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) grants. The objective of the ACP is to improve the viability and long-term sustainability of municipalities by providing support for regional collaboration and capacity building initiatives such as: new or enhanced regional municipal services, improved municipal capacity to respond to municipal and regional priorities, and effective inter-municipal relations through joint and collaborative activities. Camrose received $249,500 to partner with the village of Edberg to purchase a fire truck. Wetaskiwin received $67,000 to support the salary cost and expenses of a municipal finance officer intern and a second year municipal administrator intern. County municipalities also received the above funding and this August the County of Camrose received $285,282 for a solar retrofit for the County office building and $144,000 for a bridge (BF8315) replacement. A quick update on carbon pricing – just a reminder that it was actually introduced in Alberta in 2007 by the former PC government under the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation at $15 per ton of CO2 emitted. The carbon levy is not new to Alberta; we have had it for nine years. We have not met our carbon emissions targets so another $5/ton will come into effect January 1, 2017. This will add only 4.5 cents per litre of gas at the pumps. All parties are beginning to realize the necessity for climate change action; all Canadians and Albertans can become more energy efficient.
Lion Bear Fox invade the Bailey Theatre By Murray Green
Three strong solo artists came together to form Lion Bear Fox. The trio will be performing at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. Chris Arruda (Lion), Cory Woodward (Bear) and Ryan McMahon (Fox) kept crossing paths in the folk music circuit, so they decided to work together to create magic on stage. “All three of us were solo artists for about a decade before we started this project. We have been front men of different rock and folk bands. Then you play on your own and it is an interesting path to take,” said Chris. “It is a lot of hard work and difficult when you don’t have other people to help you along. I almost stopped because I was getting tired. Ryan invited me to go along with him on a month-long tour, along with Cory. We toured the country and it was a great experience.” Vancouver’s Lion Bear Fox merges three huge voices sharing stories through compelling lyrics, honest narrative and unbridled passion. Three men spread a message of hope, vulnerability and redemption. Lion Bear Fox are further cementing themselves as the new Canadian band to watch. “We started out playing three separate sets and then slowly we would back up each other on certain songs,” recalled Chris. “We grew closer together and at the end of the tour, in Winnipeg, we were told that we only had 20 minutes to play. We didn’t have time for each of us to play, so we played the songs that all of us knew. The response was overwhelming. People thought we were a band. It was bigger than the sum of its parts and that is how it started.” A year later they recorded their first CD and they have been playing as a trio for four years. “We all have distinct voices and song writing styles. The first year was
a learning curve and we kept playing and a style just emerged, rather than setting out on a style,” said Chris. “It has evolved into a cohesive sounding unit.” The band name was a collection of throwback animals that were not taken. “We wanted an earthy name to our band because I think that is what our music sounds like. At the same time we wanted something that represented us separately,” added Chris. “Cory is part Métis and his spirit growing up was always a bear. I’m a Leo and have a big tatoo of a lion on my chest. Ryan is extremely crafty and he became the fox.” The trio spent 10 days in the Vancouver Island wilderness crafting “the record of their lives” - a collection of songs steeped in character and full of warmth. One part folk, one part rock, a pinch of gospel and a dash of growl, the self-titled LP is a testament to the trio’s strength as songwriters. Lush acoustic guitars are book ended by buzzing electrics and screaming organs; all tied together by rich percussion and three voices in mighty harmony. It’s a sound that harkens back to an era when the song was paramount. “We are thrilled to play in Camrose. Our music really belongs in a theatre setting. One thing we set out to do on this tour was to avoid playing in bars. We have high energy, but we have intimate songs as well that work well in a theatre. We love places with historic legacy. If you have the right venue, you can maintain that intimate feeling of just 15 people, but with a lager audience that adds energy to the room. We like to tell stories and with a theatre setting you get to do that.” Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre. com/tickets, at the Bailey Box Office 5041-50 Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780672-5510.

Liberal climate change disaster By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot
While many folks are busy with harvest, following the baseball playoffs, or getting into the new hockey season, the Trudeau Liberals are busy preparing to foist on Canadians their largest tax yet: their national carbon tax on everything. It is a massive increasing tax grab that makes Canadian businesses less competitive in the global market; takes money out of the pockets of all Canadians; and, hands it over to the Liberals in Ottawa to squander and waste, along with the 10s of billions of dollars they will borrow by the next election. The pending economic loss is astonishing even when we contemplate the added costs to our local agricultural sector. The price of diesel fuel alone will rise between 11 and 14 cents per litre. All operating trucks and machinery will become more expensive to run and I have heard estimates of between $10,000 and $50,000 per year – in added costs. The Liberals in Ottawa are more concerned about catering to the international community and making sure they know that “Canada is back.” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already sent nearly $3 billion to developing nations to help them (China, India, and others) invest in climate change. They will use our money to become more competitive than our Canadian exporting firms. What’s worse is the total disrespect for provincial jurisdiction. Even the Alberta government won’t support the Liberal’s carbon tax without conditions. Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Yukon have voiced their opposition, but the response from Ottawa is clear, either you impose a tax on your own jurisdiction, or Ottawa will do it for you. Aaron Wudrick of the Canadian Taxpayer Federation said, “The federal government has now committed to imposing a wide-ranging tax which will rise over time taking $38 billion out of Canadians’ pockets annually by 2022 – all in pursuit of an emissions target that, even if it is met, will have no substantive impact on global climate change.” The Conservative Party supports the Paris targets to reduce emissions by 30 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030. The previous Conservative government had a plan to get there without a carbon tax and without going billions of dollars into debt. With Canada contributing 1.6 per cent of world GHGs, perhaps we should be requesting the largest emitters (China, India, USA) to consider something similar before implementing measures that will kill jobs and hurt economic growth in Canada. They need to start listening to premiers of provinces like Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and the territories. These jurisdictions do not want a carbon tax, because they know that Canadians, particularly rural and northern Canadians, cannot afford it. In Alberta, we are going through the toughest recession we have had in decades, and the worst possible thing is to hike prices and impose new taxes on everything. The Liberal government is ruling with a top-down, do-it-or-else approach to federalism. In Alberta, this will make a bad situation worse. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.
Community pulls together to fund Stollery Hospital room
MOVIE NIGHT
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose Fountain Tire downtown owner Randy McCrea, east end Fountain Tire owner Jason Fleck, along with son Dawson and wife Kelly and Battle River Community Initiatives member Brian Austrom present Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation development officer Cyndi Matthews with $1,500 raised and matched from Fountain Tire’s 60th anniversary movie night. Dawson Fleck and his family have also received care from the Stollery Children’s Hospital. By Murray Green
The Battle River Community Initiative did it! They raised $500,000 to fund an additional operating room at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. “We had a small committee who have all had a child or grandchild cared for at the Stollery Children’s Hospital at one time or another. The core team was Cliff and Brett Denham, Brian Austrom and Rod Ross,” explained Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Development Officer Cyndi Matthews. “We had a goal to raise $500,000 to put toward the new operating room unit at the Stollery and we did it.” Support came from the Battle River community which included, The Battle River Community Foundation, the Camrose District and Flagstaff District 4-H Beef Clubs, individuals and local businesses in the County of Camrose and Flagstaff County. “We have surpassed
the goal of $500,000 towards the Stollery Children’s Hospital pediatric operating room expansion and redevelopment. The hospital’s upgraded operating room suite includes state-of-the-art operating rooms, improved pre-operative spaces and private recovery rooms to provide excellent care for children from across Western Canada,” she added. In honour of the tremendous generosity of everyone in the greater camrose area, a plaque recognizing the Battle River Community is proudly displayed outside one of the new operating rooms. The Stollery Children’s Hospital underwent an extensive expansion that included the construction of new facilities to continue to provide the services and care necessary to support children through their medical journeys. The hospital is expanding to meet growing community needs for advanced, compassionate and family-centered care.
GOLF PROCEEDS
The province committed a total of $55.3 million to upgrade and modernize the OR suites, the physical environment for neonatal and pediatric patients who require lifesupport and critical care, as well as space for teaching and training. The hospital identified that $15 million in additional funding would allow the expansion projects to have a higher degree of excellence in terms of programming, research and resources which the foundation is responsible for raising through an integrated five year campaign entitled Critical for Care. The first phase of this campaign is complete and the new ambulatory clinics are open and seeing hundreds of children a day. Operating room redevelopment was the second phase of the campaign and construction not only renovated the five current operating theatres, but expanded to a total of 10 operating theatres to improve patient care and provide timely access to all children requiring surgery.

Bailey Buckaroos more than just a house band By Murray Green
The Bailey Buckaroos provide classic country music in a show held once a month at the Bailey Theatre. The Buckaroos offer a sound that goes back in time when classic songs were created that were fun for the entire family. The band features monthly special guests offering a wide variety of country and western styles. The next show is on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. “We hope to have more guests this year. There are so many talented musicians locally and we would like to include them on the roster throughout the season. We had a big celebration at the end of last year with Rudy Famulak’s birthday party. We had about 20 musicians on stage and we would like to have a big, end of the season show like that again,” said Curtis Bessette, an original member of the Buckaroos. “This year we are focusing on bringing in local talent, especially younger musicians.” The show is a great way to introduce young talent to the stage. “This gives them a platform to perform in front of the public to build their confidence in playing,” added Curtis. Charly Doll, Chad Szott and many other musicians first appeared with the Buckaroos. “On Oct. 23, we have scheduled Ethan Harty, an
upcoming fiddle player. If you close your eyes and listen to him play you would think he has been playing for decades,” revealed Curtis. “Kim Meyer will also be on the show.” Harty is an award winning traditional old-time fiddler player from Strome. In his spare time, the 14-year-old like to hone his blacksmithing skills. The Bailey Buckaroos regular members are Les Hall, Dan Olofson, Arne Mack, Jordan Leden, Stan Kontek, Hal Strudwick and Famulak. Female vocalists Jessica Dostie and Myra Marshall join as rotating guests when they are available. “The idea for the band started with Dan Olofson and myself. We wanted to support the Bailey Theatre and local musicians and bring people to the theatre,” explained Curtis. “At the time the Bailey was having a hard time making ends meet and trying to raise funds. That is when we created the Bailey Buckaroos Music Society.” The band members receive an honorarium as well as donating funds to the theatre. “We are not an in-house band, but at the same time we are exclusive to the Bailey Theatre,” Curtis added. “Technically, we are not just a band. We are supporting the theatre. My role is to line up guests and round up the band mem-

bers for monthly shows,” said the former president of the society. “We are consistent in bringing in $10,000 to the Bailey every season. It is nice to see the show solidified as a staple for the theatre,” said Curtis. “Some guests and members of the Bailey Buckaroos forgo their honorarium and donate it back to the Bailey.” Curtis has taught music in the past and has performed with several bands

in the area. “It is fun to watch someone grow from playing three cords and saying they can’t sing to three years down the road getting up on stage and performing. It is a blessing to encourage people to follow their passions. Rudy and Dan both like to fuel the fire of young musicians. The whole band is a good support group. When up to 10 band members play it is a great back-up experience for a young performer.” Other shows will be
held on Sunday, Nov. 27 and Sunday, Dec. 18 this year. Next year (2017) shows are slated for Sunday, Jan. 29; Sunday, Feb. 26; Sunday, March 26; Sunday, April 30; Sunday, May 28 and Sunday, June 25. Black Hyenas launch Halloween season By Murray Green
You will be treated to the performance of the Black Hyenas and haunted by the classic showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Or, is it the other way around? The beginning of the Halloween season will be launched when the Black
Hyenas take the stage at the Bailey Theatre on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. The Black Hyenas are a post-apocalyptic primitive progressive surf-a-billy jug band. Call them what you want, but they have a solid local fan base and the band joins the Bailey Theatre’s Home Grown series.
The band plays for a couple of hours prior to showing Rocky Horror Picture Show at 10 p.m. The young and young at heart are encouraged to come out in full costume and join in with the Rocky Horror experience. In this 1975 cult classic, sweethearts Brad and

Local dancers audition for parts in Nutcracker By Murray Green
Ballet Victoria will be showcasing the classic Nutcracker on Thursday, Dec. 15 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The holiday season brings happiness, love and peace. Enjoy it with the splendour of real ballet for the whole family by the Victoria Ballet Company that preserves the beauty and spirit of this classical ballet. The Nutcracker delivers everything you expect from a Ballet Victoria performance: beautifully executed dance, brilliant costumes, complex choreography and a bit of humour. Victoria Ballet incorporates local dancers into the cast of the show. Local dancers play the party children as well as Russian dancers and mice. Heading up the audition and rehearsal schedule is Lisa Rootsaert, artistic director with Camrose Academy of Dance. “I’m very excited to be a part of this wonderful creative process,” said Rootsaert. “It is a great opportunity for Camrose dancers to participate in a professional show. Ballet Victoria’s Nutcracker is a classic that everyone will enjoy. There are many parts available for a wide range of dancers. Everyone is welcome to audition, but must be able to commit to the tight rehearsal schedule prior to the show.” Open auditions will be held at the Lougheed Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants must call the Lougheed Box Office at
780-608-2922 to schedule an audition time. Nick Beach, general manager of the Lougheed Centre is excited to have a local component to the show. “It engages the community in a unique and creative way. Families who have the opportunity to see their dancer on stage with a professional company is a memory that will last a lifetime. The Nutcracker is a family classic and is a wonderful Christmas tradition.” The history of The Nutcracker ballet dates back to December of 1892, when it was performed for the first time at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia with famous ballet dancers and choreographers of classical ballet. The story starts with a traditional family Christmas Eve party where a gift from an uncle unleashes a whirlwind of unexpected vignettes and surprises. Paul Destrooper, Ballet Victoria’s artistic director, is known for his dramatic, inspiring, and physical style. Ballet Victoria embodies the ability to combine the stunning classical lines of pointe work with the grounded side of neoclassical ballet and modern contemporary dance forms. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive. ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances.

From the Northwest Resistance of 1885 and for over 60 years, the Canadian Government denied many Indigenous peoples of the prairies the basic freedom to leave their reserves, all the while knowing there was no basis in law for the policy. This investigative documentary features Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, Ojibwe and Blackfoot Elders and their stories of living under and resisting the system, revealing a little-known picture of life under segregation. Fire Prevention Week successfully educates residents
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The flashing lights and the sounds of sirens caught the attention of young residents as they gathered around firefighter Len Chartrand and Sparky the Fire Dog for tips on home fire escape plans during the Great Escape event held on Oct. 12.
Eight-year-old Drayton Page donned his own miniature sized turnout jacket while posing with firefighter Shelton Tkaczyk on the ladder truck during the Camrose Fire Department pancake breakfast held as a wind up to Fire Prevention Week.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Left to right, firefighter Duncan McDougall serves up a pancake for Marj Sjogren, while firefighter Morgan Caudron and Emile Chaput prepare for the next hungry person during the annual firefighters breakfast sponsored by the Camrose Firefighters Association held on Oct. 16.
The Firefighters Honour Guard marched in formation during the pancake breakfast held at the Camrose Fire Department.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Sparky the fire dog gave seven-year-old Isaac Pozerniuk a high five during the Great Escape initiative held on Oct. 12
Camrose Firefighter Aaron Taves lifted three-year-old Samuel Haugen up so he could push the smoke alarm test button during the smoke alarm testing blitz held on Oct. 11 as part of Fire Prevention Week.
Camrose residents were more than willing to allow firefighters into their homes to check the smoke alarms. Firefighter Morgan Caudron sprayed canned smoke at the smoke detector while Lieutenant Rob Olson waits for the chirping signifying the alarm is working.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Some residents were simply curious as to why the fire trucks were on their streets on Oct. 12 and came out to investigate. Pictured left to right are firefighter Len Chartrand, home resident 13 year-old Declan CarpenterHall, volunteer 11-year-old Bray Paulson, Sparky the fire dog, five-year-old Malakai Hall (seated on Sparky’s lap) and volunteer 10-year-old Fisher Knopf.

“Providing meaningful tributes for those who have lived, been loved and passed on”
When thank you is just not enough… There are no words to express the magnitude of love and support we have received during this difficult time. The beautiful cards, flowers, food, phone calls and visits have been overwhelming, but truly appreciated. John was so proud to be a part of this community. His positivity, kindness, humour, sarcasm and quick wit will bring a smile to many for years to come. John was very passionate about educating people on the dangers of distracted driving, a message we hope will continue. Special thank you to Phil Merritt, my rock on that unfortunate day. Thank you for all your support, I will never forget it. It was a difficult day for both of us, and you were not only a caregiver for John, but a cherished friend. To Burger Funeral Home, we appreciate your time and dedication throughout this difficult time. We, the family, cannot fully express our gratitude. – The family of John Boden: Shauna, Kelti, Orland, Kendra, John, and Kourtney In loving memory of
Victor Szott February 21, 1928 ~ October 22, 2015 On the First Anniversary of your Passing One year ago today, we lost not only a husband and a father, but our best friend. In a quiet country graveyard, Where the wild flowers grow, Rests the one we loved so dearly, we lost one year ago. We visit your resting place and we put flowers there with care, But no one knows the heartache as we turn and leave you there. Your passing has left a loneliness the world can never fill, There’s not a day that we don’t love you still. May the winds of love blow gently and whisper so you can hear, That we will always love and miss you and wish that you were here. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you never went alone, For part of us went with you the day God called you Home. We think of you as living in the hearts of those you touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, and you were loved so much. You’re in Heaven with the angels, singing a sweet refrain, Living in a city where the roses never fade. We miss you so very much. With all our love, Wife Helen and all your children

But will you, till I call her back Take care of her for me? She’ll bring her charms to gladden you And – should her stay be brief – You’ll have her lovely memories As a solace for your grief.

In loving memory of
Daryl Skaret The moment that you left me, My heart was split in two. One side was filled with memories, The other side died with you. I often lay awake at night When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down Memory Lane With tears upon my cheek. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But missing you is a heartache That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart, And there you will remain, You see, life has gone on without you, But will never be the same. Love, Andrea, Kate, Bailey, Marissa, Lyndal, Kayla, Dustin, Dolores and family
Now, will you give her all your love? Nor think the labor vain? Nor hate me when I come to take This lent child back again?
November 29, 1921 ~ September 21, 2016 George Norman Osness of Kelowna, BC, formerly of Camrose, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the age of 94 years. George was born on November 29, 1921 to Victor and Lillian Osness on the farm southwest of Camrose, AB. He was baptized and confirmed at Camrose Lutheran Church. George married Gladys Rasmussen on November 16, 1947 and together they raised five children. Gladys passed away peacefully on December 14, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 77 years. Growing up on the farm 4-1/2 miles southwest of Camrose, George liked to play baseball, hockey and go skiing. When he was 19 years old, George travelled to Trenton, ON and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and became a Hurricane Fighter Pilot. After obtaining his Pilot Status, he was sent to England and was stationed at Oban, Scotland where he served for three years from 1940 to 1943. Upon his return to Canada, he was stationed at Shepard Field in Calgary and was released from duty upon the end of the war in 1945. George and his family lived and farmed near his childhood farm until he and his sons began a construction company, building custom residential homes in Camrose. Following Gladys’ passing, George moved to Kelowna to live with Doug’s family for two years. He then moved into the Lake Country Manor, a home near Doug and Gwen, where he lived for the past eight years. George and Gladys enjoyed spending winters with their many friends and family in Arizona. George enjoyed his trips to Hawaii, North Dakota and Norway. He especially loved to play chess and was a member of chess clubs in Camrose and Kelowna. It could be said that he and his father Victor were fantastic fanatics! When he was younger, while on a trip to visit his sister Gladys Snowden and her family, he found a place to play chess in downtown Toronto which challenged his expertise. George also loved his dog, Idgy, a large and loveable boxer who was always up for a visit to the Lake Country Manor. George will be lovingly remembered by his family of four children, 15 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren: George’s son Bob (Rhonda) of Calgary and family, Kayleigh (Jules), their children Theo and Vesper of Peachland, BC; Mindi (Cory), their sons Dane, Leif and Bryn of Cochrane, AB; Brett (Cherisse), their children Violet, Roland and Thoren of Cochrane; and Lael of Los Angeles. I fancied that I heard you say “Dear Lord, Thy will be done. For all the joys Thy child will bring The risk of grief we’ll run. We will shelter her with tenderness We’ll love her while we may – And for the happiness we have known Forever grateful stay. But should the angels come for her Much sooner than we planned, We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes And try – to understand.” – Author Unknown

The footage on that camera may help us identify a suspect which can lead to more solved crimes.” Camrose Police will be the second police service in the province, after Lethbridge, to use this type of program to assist in preventing and aid in investigating crime. By Lori Larsen Get your bed made, the annual bed races are just around the corner. The Brick and the Open Door present Bed Races and Family Funday on Oct. 29 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. All funds raised as a result of team pledges and donations given at the event will be donated to the Camrose Open Door housing and support programs for at risk youth in the community. “We are really excited this year because not only do we have the bed races with the teams and the pledges, but we are combining it with a family fun day,” said Camrose Open Door executive director Rochelle Johannson. The day offers something for people of all ages including old fashioned carnival games, face painting, spooky story time, people donning Halloween costumes, crafts, food and of course the heart pounding excitement of teams
racing their very imaginative beds. “There is no entry charge to the event but there will be some minimal costs for the games and food,” commented Johannson. “We think it is a great opportunity for families to have a low cost fun time and learn about what the Open Door does and is all about but also an opportunity for us to give back to the community.” The event is a great opportunity for children to wear their Halloween costumes and enjoy the safety and warmth of an indoor pre-Halloween party, and of course adults are also welcome to dust off their costumes and dress up as well. Teams will be competing for such titles as the Golden Spring Award (fastest bed), Stuffed Mattress Award (most pledges raised), Best Costumed Award and the chance to win a catered lunch. Other challenges will include bed bowling, bed

Camrose Police Service is reaching out to residents and businesses for their assistance in not only helping to reduce crime, but provide some aid in investigations. “Camrose Police have initiated a Security Camera Registry program whereby businesses and residents in our community who have security cameras on their property can register these cameras with the police service,” said Const. Danton Bennefield. “The purpose of this program is to assist the police service in crime prevention and it can also be used as an investigative tool.” All a resident or business owner has to do to register security cameras with Camrose Police Service is visit www.camrosepolice.ca and click on Security Camera Registry. Complete the
neighbourhood. In essence you are not only protecting your own property but supplying the police with the tools to investigate incidents happening in your community. By having the names and locations of security cameras throughout the community, members of the police service will save time seeking people with security cameras, instead they can immediately contact any registered partici-
pants and inquire about footage of any suspicious activity that may have been captured on their cameras. “Signing up is free and easy and completely confidential,” said Bennefield. Once your registration is complete a member of the Camrose Police Service will contact you to verify your camera(s). If there is any criminal activity or an incident in the vicinity of your camera the police will contact you and may request a copy of the video captured by your camera in order to assist in further investigation of the activity or incident. “This program will create a communication bridge between the community and the police service and allows us to work with our community to help solve more crime,” concluded Bennefield. Knowing in advance where security cameras are located throughout
the community will help to save the police valuable time in canvassing neighbourhoods in search of video footage which may assist in solving files. In conjunction with the City of Camrose IT department the information on security cameras will be geomapped and easily assessable to the police. Information on the program will be made available to all businesses during their annual business registration with the city. To help reduce crime and expand investigative capabilities, Camrose Police Service is encouraging all residents and businesses to register security cameras and contribute to providing a safer community. People simply begin to see a new perspective, a more positive outlook.” Fuechtman will be making two presentations one at 1 p.m. and one at 7 p.m.
“The talks on Tuesday give people a universal understanding of the big picture of their lives here. How can we live life if we don’t know why we are here? ” asked Fuechtman. Born and raised in rural Alberta, Fuechtman is a former bank executive of 35 years who was introduced to the Inner Peace Movement in 2010 and is now the national director. During the presentation participants will learn

F-Series Super Duty Redesigned for 2017 By Murray Green
If you demand a truck that gets the job done, the redesigned Ford 2017 F-Series Super Duty truck at Lamb Ford Sales is it. All-new high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy slashed the weight of the body. Much of that weight savings was then reinvested where it counts the most, an all-new fully boxed frame built of over 95 per cent highstrength steel that is 24 times stiffer than the previous frame. The result is a pickup that has a stronger frame than ever before, yet is up to 350 pounds (158 kg) lighter. “Technology expands your vision and productivity. Newly available cameras, up to seven in all, enhance visibility for on-site tasks, including the trailer reverse guidance system for the often-tough job of backing up a large trailer,” said sales consultant Nicholas Eades. “And Super Duty now offers available BLIS with cross-traffic alert and trailer tow10, lane-keeping alert plus adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support.” The 2017 Super Duty is more than just the most capable heavy-duty Ford pickup ever built. This all-new Super Duty exceeds in maximum payload, as well as in con-

ventional and fifthwheel/gooseneck towing. The Ford 6.2L V8 gas engine is more heavy-work capable than ever. In fact, no other gas-powered fullsize pickup delivers as much torque for jobs calling for rugged pulling power. The available 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8 comes through with best-in-class horsepower and torque. The available B20-capable 6.7L power stroke turbo diesel V8 is the winner in diesel performance with its best-in-class horsepower and torque ratings (440 horsepower; 925 lb.-ft. of torque). “The available integrated tailgate step makes it easier to
access all of the payload the Super Duty can carry,” added Eades. “Step and handle stow inside the tailgate and can be easily accessed when needed.” With SYNC 3, you can enjoy all of the SYNC 6 features, plus a next generation of voice-activated technology. Enjoy smart hardware and software with an easy-toread color touchscreen, experience quick reactions to your commands; capacitive touchscreen features impressive responsiveness such as the convenient swipe feature; talk

with real-world voice commands; locate your favourite restaurants with simple destination entry via the optional navigation and bring the power of Siri eyes free and your iPhone into your vehicle. Ford Super Duty trucks offers a factory-installed, fully integrated trailer brake controller (TBC) with no installation hassles or aftermarket worries. Integrated with the anti-lock brakes and trailer sway control, TBC synchronizes vehicle and trailer brakes for seamless braking,
even with the heaviest loads. The Ford TBC offers the advantage of verified compatibility with trailers (one to four axles) utilizing electrically actuated drum brakes and certain electric-over-hydraulic drum or disc brakes. The available live-drive Power Takeoff (PTO) provision with Mobile Mode lets you power an aftermarket snow plow, pump, compressor or other accessory. And the big news: PTO provision is now available with the 6.2L gas engine as well as the 6.7L turbo diesel. PTO provision is integrated into the torqshift transmission, reducing the time needed for seasonal upfit changes. An output gear connects directly to the engine crankshaft to power your PTO anytime the engine is running, whether the truck is in motion or stopped. Another big feature is “split-shaft” capability (diesel only) that allows multiple accessories to operate at the same time when the truck is stopped. You can see the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks at Lamb Ford Sales on Highway 13 East Camrose. Phone 780672-2411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

The Camrose Kodiaks allowed the Drumheller Dragons to heat up a 3-0 first period lead before rallying in a 5-4 comeback victory on Oct. 11. The Dragons were on fire in the opening frame and scored 3:32 into the game and then added another tally on a power play 10 minutes later. Before the frame was over the Kodiaks dug a threegoal deficit. Camrose fought back in the second when Estian Coetzee put the team on the scoresheet. The clubs exchanged power play tallies in the middle part of the period. The Kodiaks came out of hibernation in the third by dominating the Dragons, both on the scoreboard and in shots. T.J. Brown, Cooper Johnson and Mackenzie Bauer scored with the latter two shorthanded markers. The shots in the third were 22-2 for the Kodiaks and 48-20 in the game. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped eight of 11 before receiving the hook. Joey May stepped in to make seven of nine saves. Camrose had the Whitecourt Wolverines nipping at them in a 5-3 loss in Alberta Junior Hockey League play, Oct. 8. Camrose opened the scoring with Slater Strong grabbing the only tally in the first period. The middle frame was all Whitecourt as they came back with three goals. In the third, Jack McCool pulled the Kodiaks to within one. However, the Wolverines replied two minutes later to gain the two-goal advantage back. After Zach Vinnell scored for the Kodiaks, the contest was close until Whitecourt added an empty net goal. Goalie Gora stopped 13 of 16 shots and May came in to turn away nine of 10 shots he faced. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Baking for a good cause By Lori Larsen
Going into the fourth annual Breast Cancer Bake Sale, the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Vikings women’s volleyball team is proud to once again be supporting such an amazing cause. “As a team we want to become active members in our community to show not only our commitment to athletics and school, but to the people who support us,” said fourth year libero, Jenn Laskosky. The bake sale was held on Oct. 12 in the Aug ustana Campus Forum and raised funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. “Raising awareness for breast cancer allows our team to show their support for the thousands of women and families affected by breast cancer each year. As women we are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, so by helping to raise awareness we show our support for those already affected, but also for each other. As a team we strive to represent an ideal; a team made up of friends who become family and who
will support each other and their community.” Breast cancer affects one in nine Canadian women during their lifetime and one in four cancers diagnosed in Canadian women will be breast cancer. Of the women diagnosed with breast cancer one in 30 will succumb to the disease.
However, fewer women today are dying from breast cancer as a result of early detection and the many advances in technology. Breast cancer mortality rates have decreased by 44 per cent since 1986. Every dollar donated can and does make a difference.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Members of the University of Alberta Augustana Campus Vikings women’s volleyball team were selling a variety of baked goods on Oct. 12 in the Forum to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Jenn Laskosky, left, and Nicole Brockman, draw people in by tempting them with homemade cupcakes and cookies sold for a great cause.

Masked men enter home Sept. 21
At 4:30 a.m. a woman called the police station advising the side door to her residence was kicked in and three masked men entered. Once confronted, the men fled from the residence. Sept. 20
Police conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle due to an equipment malfunction. Checks on the 42-yearold male driver revealed that he was currently bound by a Recognizance for an assault charge, with a no contact condition with the 38-year-old female victim, who was located within the vehicle. Sept. 19
While on routine patrols, police noted a vehicle speeding at high rate of speed in a residential area. The vehicle was pulled over for speeding and upon coming to a stop, a male passenger exited the vehicle
and fled the scene on foot. The driver was issued violation tickets for traffic offences. The male passenger was later located and provided a name to police. The male was identified by an assisting officer and determined that he had lied to police in regards to his identity. Sept. 18
Police received a complaint from the security staff at Duggan Mall, reporting that a female was suspected of stealing items from one of the stores. Police attended and entered into a theft investigation as stolen property was located in the adult female’s possession. The investigation determined that the female had stolen items from three different stores. As a result of the information and property obtained, the female was charged with eight criminal offences.
