The well-worn sandals being held in this photo are symbols of care and commitment. They have made an appearance in some of the world’s most impoverished countries. Larry Rathnavalu (left) and Les Parsons (right) generously purchased “Gordon’s sandals” for a year at last fall’s Sahakarini Loaves and Fishes Dinner. The late Gordon and his wife Mina Schieck (both Camrosians) spent about 10 years as missionaries in India. Gordon walked to many dirt poor communities in these very sandals. This footwear remains an everlasting way to

Proposed changes to taxi bylaw Affordable websites

By Lori Larsen

During the Sept. 12 Committee of Whole meeting, council reviewed and discussed Bylaw 2905-16 to replace the current Bylaw 2045/96 and amendment taxi Bylaw 2152-99. The proposed changes to the bylaw include: prohibiting smoking in a taxi at any time, mandatory acceptance of City issued taxi tokens, completion of (out of province) mechanical inspections by an approved inspection facility, driver permits with prominently displayed photograph of driver to be mounted within visibility of the passenger, revision of references to enabling provincial legislation, and the updating of penalties for infractions. First reading to the bylaw was given during the Sept. 19 regular council meeting with direction to administration to advertise the proposed changes to seek feedback from local taxi businesses and residents. Prior to first reading city administration circulated Bylaw 2905-16 to all taxi companies in Camrose. The matter of 2905-16 taxi bylaw returned to council during the Oct. 17 regular council meeting with a recommendation from administration that council consider proceeding with second and third reading of the proposed bylaw. Councillor PJ Stasko was

not in favour of the bylaw in its current form and suggested that postponing the motion for a month would afford council an opportunity to make some changes. Councillor Throndson was also not in support of the bylaw in its current form, stating the bylaw contained a few key issues of concern. “One is the requirement for a taxi company to accept (city) tokens. There seems to be some push back from the cab companies. The second is the requirement of inspection. I think that the benefit of some more discussion between administration and the cab companies that are affected might lead to a compromise or solution to one or more of the items.” Throndson also suggested that, as opposed to an annual out of province inspection, there could be an inspection every other year. “That will still achieve public safety but might be more economical to the cab companies. “On the issue of the tokens I don’t think it is our mandate to force businesses to accept a token program we developed; it is up to them.” Mayor Norm Mayer expressed concern regarding the feedback from the taxi companies outlining their concerns and suggested council address the concerns before proceeding with the motion.

A motion to postpone second and third readings of 2905-16 taxi bylaw to Nov. 21 was carried. Clint Davenport, one of the owners of Lakeside Taxi, spoke to council about the consequences of some of the proposed changes to the taxi bylaw, indicating that when the first meeting transpired he was out of town. “This industry employs 30 to 40 people in town and this document can seriously affect their income,” said Davenport. “You really do need feedback from the industry; there are a lot of items in here (Bylaw 2905-16) that have changed from the previous bylaw.” Davenport indicated some concerns with a few of the items in the new bylaw and suggested an opportunity to go through these concerns with council in a separate meeting. “If you put the bylaw through the way it is right now it would effectively kill the taxi industry in this town and put 30 to 40 people out of work.” Davenport suggested council receive feedback from the industry and the mechanics charged with doing the inspections in order for council to make an informed choice.

Taking a ride to freedom and independence By Lori Larsen For some a loop around the city on the Camrose Community Bus is a way to get from one place to another, for others it is a wonderful ride to freedom and independence and has become an opportunity for a social outing. Since its inception in March, 2016 the Camrose Community Bus service has seen some changes and with the persistence of city administration and staff ironing out the bugs it is has become a valuable service to Camrosians. Karen Carbonneau, Camrose resident and frequent rider knows all too well what having this service really means. “I don’t know if the powers-to-be realize really what this bus means to people,” commented Karen. Karen spoke sincerely from her own point of view but mentioned that other ladies she knew felt the same way. “They (operators of the bus) think they are giving me a ride someplace but they are not. They are giving me freedom.” Karen remarked on how using the bus service has enabled her to go places now when she wants and stay there as long as she wants and that it has given her, and many others who ride the bus, a new found independence.

“We get enough taken away from us when we get older such as eyesight and hearing and our mobility.” With the bus service she no longer has to worry about difficulty walking due to health issues or inclement weather, the bus picks her up and drops her off right outside the stops. “This is such a blessing,” she said with genuineness. “My children always ask me “What would you like for Christmas?” I’ve got things,”” said Karen pointing to items in her home, “Give me bus tickets, those I will use. “I know the bus was implemented for necessity but this winter I know I am going to take that bus just to get out. I’ll just ride the bus around, because when I get on the bus it is like old home week. We may not have known each other when we get on but we do by the time we get off the bus.” Karen couldn’t say enough about how she and many other riders have also come to appreciate the bus driver, Barry Toms. “He is a joy. He will carry my groceries up to the door for me. He comes up to every stop so we never have to step out into the cold and he even will check at the check-outs to see if we are in line.” Barry’s warm and friendly nature along with his dedication to stay on schedule

LIVING BOOK Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Some of the Grade 3 students of St. Patrick Catholic School were treated to some captivating stories told by Alberta storyteller and educator Ginger Mullen on Oct. 4, sponsored by the Camrose Public Library as part of the Taleblazers Festival. Seated in the front of some very intent listeners.

VIP DONATES Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The VIP club of Camrose donated $500 to Camrose Public Library to be used towards the purchase of a Victor Reader. Left to right VIP member Kaethi Riexinger and president Randy Simmett presented the cheque to Camrose Library staff Lisa Cummings and Cheryl Hamel.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Karen Carbonneau, a frequent rider of the Camrose Community Bus is greeted by bus driver Barry Toms as she boards for her Friday ride on Oct. 28.

makes riding the bus that much more of a gratifying experience for riders. Karen fought back emotion when she described the sense of independence having the Community Bus has given back to, not only her, but many other riders. “I lived independently for much of my life and now all of a sudden I find I have to ask for help to do things I want to do. “No matter what and how much my children will help I always stop and think, do they have time to take me, will they miss family time or are they too tired?” And despite her children (particularly her son who lives close by) telling her differently Karen just doesn’t like putting people out to take her places. “I buy a package of tickets and I know I am good for 10 rides on the bus. I can go get my prescriptions or groceries and do other things all on my own, thanks to the community bus.” Karen also said the bus

offers an economical option for residents, especially those on a fixed income. “The number of people getting on the bus is growing,” added Karen. “When I first started going there were three or four people on the bus, but when I came home yesterday the bus was almost full. There were college students, elders, a young woman with a little girl and a grandmother with her grandson, it works for everyone.” And Karen strongly feels once the colder snowy weather arrives more seniors will be using the service to avoid having to start their vehicles and drive in hazardous conditions. “I know once winter comes I would be stuck inside but now because of the bus I can get out, even if it’s just for a coffee with a friend or for a stop at the Recreation Centre and maybe a little walk around the walking track.” Karen commented

SWING YOUR PARTNER

on how much the bus has changed her life and that of others she knows and hoped the service will not only continue but may even grow to include more days including weekends and other stops such as the library. “I can just ride the bus to get out and visit with others on the bus, have lunch or even just look at the Christmas decorations. No words can explain what that means. What it has done for people, money cannot buy.” Karen expressed her gratitude to the City of Camrose for implementing the Community Bus and in her own words concluded, “Keep the wheels rolling.” For more information on the City of Camrose Community Bus visit the website at www. camrose.ca or call 780672-8777. Bus passes can be purchased at Rose City Handivan Society office located at Mirror Lake Centre.

CHIME IN!

Express your thoughts - voice your opinion. Have your say on Camrose Now! Tap on the green Forum button.

Some of the recent topics and comments submitted: HELIPAD • More on Helipad - The parking area at the hospital is now completely dysfunctional. Even worse than a couple of retail lots on the west end. Let’s hope whoever designed this two-million dollar project doesn’t get turned loose on a critical project. •

Stupid Helipad - I’m in the medical field. I have worked at hospitals with helipads. Yes, I think the helipad plan in Camrose was less than perfectly thought out. Most people do not understand that before a patient can leave many hospitals they have to be deemed to be in a condition stable for transport. One could argue that air ambulance transport from the Camrose airport may have been possible in virtually all cases. Could the same amount of money been put to equal or better use in other areas? Absolutely.

Helipad Certification - Waiting for the helipad certification is not only being wise and safe, it is the law. Things like this do not happen overnight.

Helipad - We live in the flight path of STARS landing at the hospital so I’m not real concerned that for the last 26 times it’s landed at the airport. What bothers me is that our local MLA couldn’t get information on what the new pad cost. Is this transparency in government?

AMERICAN ELECTION • American Election Soap Opera - In Canada our drive to elect a new prime minister is typically 6 weeks. Wonder what level of lies, corruption, womanizing, flip-flopping, or irrelevant and unnecessary crap might be dug up on our white-as-snow candidates if our campaign was eighteen months long. I think we ought not to throw rocks. Just sayin’! •

Not a Chance Hillary - Despite the news networks trying everything possible to discredit Donald and boost Hillary’s stature, I think there is a good chance Hillary will flame out. Obamacare, emails, the Foundation, baggage and 30 years without a whole bunch memorable that is noteworthy. History in the making.

Trump Steam - You say Trump is picking up steam. So, that must mean more HOT AIR. He’s obviously full of it. Poor Americans.

Trump Picking Up Steam - Let the ego resume. Polls now say he’s no longer a guaranteed election loser. Just a life loser. Better entertainment than a soap opera.

HALLOWEEN • In the Halloween Mood! - Drive by the home at Marler Drive and 63 Street. These people know how to get us in the spirit of Halloween. – Martin Crawgdon.

Helipad - Clearly the right hand of our Provincial Government doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. Crummy part is that we get to be the ones to pay for their bureaucratic blunders.

Helipad - Insightful letter in today’s Booster about the helipad at St. Mary’s. If there is no rush in getting it certified for use why was there such a rush to blow 2 million on a new one?

Halloween House - Intrigued, we drove by to check out the decorated house you recommended. You’re right. Well done! – The Millers.

Halloween Decorating? - Haven’t you heard? With this year’s weather, we are skipping Halloween in 2016 - going straight to Christmas! LOL

Quit Bashing the Helipad - If this helipad can be useful in saving even one life, it’s worth whatever the cost and many times more than that.

Halloween Decorating Disappointment - We’ve tried decorating our yard for Halloween and Christmas. Vandals either steal or destroy our work. We gave up.

Holiday Decorating Vandalism - Vandalism is a huge problem for the corporate community, too. Broken windows, graffiti, damaged planters on Main Street and so on. There was an earlier remark about lack of participation in this year’s Scarecrow Festival. The reason is simple- vandals. So few wreck so much for so many.

GRAFFITI • Graffiti Gone - Thank you - As someone who lives on the north side and walks behind the Ken’s Furniture and The Brick locations daily, I appreciate not having to look at the foul language and drug symbols on the backs on the complex. Thank you for painting over this graffiti garbage this fall. Margaret T. INTERNET • Internet Down Today - Amazon, Netflix, Tumblr, Twitter and other popular sites again hacked. Another reminder that the web will never be totally secure. Be careful when posting. •

Re: Internet Down Today - Wouldn’t it be fascinating to see if the sun would still come up if the entire World Wide Web went dark for a week. Just imagine - people would have to talk face to face, go to libraries for answers, read a daily newspaper for news, sneak a peek at a Playboy magazine for a thrill, wait for the radio announcer to hear how bad a Toronto sports team lost and go for an actual walk after dinner. Is the world a happier, healthier place because the world is online 24-7? Internet or Other? - Didn’t have service last night (TV and wireless internet.) As usual can’t get through to the technical support line. Is this connected to the recent internet DOS attacks or internal tech troubles? Would ask local provider if I could somehow get through. Does anyone have the answer?

BIG VALLEY JAMBOREE • BVJ - I see that Keith Urban and Jason Aldean are both returning to Big Valley next summer. Thank you, thank you, thank you! – Country Fan. MEDICAL MARIJUANA • Marijuana at Shoppers - It will finally be nice to get dope inside the store instead of behind the store. Bring it on! •

Medical Marijuana - Soon to be at a Shoppers Drug Mart near you. No turning back the clock now. What have we become?

Medical Marijuana - The government wants us all to plant special tulips for the 150th Birthday of Canada. With the way the province has gone to pot under Notley we might as well each plant a personal marijuana plant. Happy and broke!

Immature Comments about Medical Marijuana - As someone who benefits greatly from prescribed medical marijuana, I welcome the news that a local provider may soon be an option for me. If you can’t find something decent to say on this topic, please don’t. Thank you.

Grass at Shoppers - I think Shoppers may have to expand their delivery hours. 9:00 pm to 9:00 am might work better in the future.

TV Back On - Stayed on hold for tech support for 20 minutes. Finally gave up. Working now. Not the first time with no service. Frustrating.

CANADIAN POLITICS • Goverments’ Primary Focus Being the Environment - Honorable but darn short-sighted. Rachel and Justin how about going hand in hand for a long trip to Russia, India and China, just for starters, and get each of your friends in power to get them onside with no burning of coal, no dumping of waste into the ocean, no pipelines to transport oil or gas. After you’ve accomplished this, come home and we will all abide by equal playing rules. •

Next Election - It’s a no-brainer that Notley is a one-termer. Trudeau will buy Ontario and Quebec votes so that’s a huge issue for the West. Fickle Mother Nature is a whole other issue. She’s moody.

It’s Said That Things Happen in 3’s - Let’s see: Rachel Notley screwing Alberta into the ground; Justin Trudeau who doesn’t give a rat’s butt about Alberta and Mother Nature giving rural Alberta the middle finger. Yup. We got three!

What’s on your mind?

CITY OF CAMROSE • Camrose Isn’t at It’s Peak, BUT… - Reading the posts about Camrose not being as pristine as usual- valid point, but, in all honesty, is there a better place in Alberta, all things considered? Probably not! •

Camrose Looks a Little Sick Right Now - For sale signs everywhere. Many downtown stores empty. Lots of apartments to rent and, just can’t wait for the carbon tax. That will surely bring back prosperity to Alberta. When’s the next election?

It’s been proven that overall health can be directly linked to hearing health. CCHS prepares for hosting volleyball provincials By Murray Green

Camrose Composite High School and the senior girls’ and boys’ Trojans volleyball teams will be hosting the 3A schools’ provincials on Nov. 24 to 26. Megan Olsen is excited to play in the provincials. “Since this is my last year in high school, to go to provincials and host it will be a pretty cool experience. It makes us want to earn a spot in provincials and not just host it,” Megan said. “We want to play well at zones to actually qualify for provincials. It will help our team to earn a spot.” In league play, the team is at 2-2 and shooting for a 4-2 record and qualifying for zones. “We really click this year and we have a certain dynamic with everyone getting along so well,” said Olsen. “We have a well-round-

ed team this year. We have players on the bench that can step right in and contribute,” added coach Graeme Thain. “To play well, we have to play collectively as 12 players together. We don’t have that one all-star that can carry us; we all have to work together to be successful. It is a matter of challenging each other to do better in every practice and game.” The team can’t settle for just being good. “We need to push each player to improve and they have to push each other,” explained coach Thain. “I think if we have high intensity in practices and games and keep winning, then we will continue to improve,” shared Olsen. “Challenging each other will help us improve. As Grade 12’s we really want to do good. Starting out hosting provincials is really cool for

Megan Olsen

the younger players as well. It will make them want to play at provincials again.” The community support will help the local teams. “It will be good to have a lot of community support in cheering for us, along with the boys’ team. It encourages us to do better too. Provincials

is a community hosting, not just us,” Olsen said. Games will be played at CCHS, Jack Stuart School and Charlie Killam school. “One of the things we want to do is allow the students to go back to a former school and play in front of younger students and give them someone to look up to,” shared coach Thain. “To play in front of former teachers and at your former school at the provincial level is a pretty cool experience as well. Elementary students will be cheering our teams on.” Olsen said that “It will be a cool thing to be a role model. They can see that they could be playing provincials at this level one day.” Hosting 24 teams for provincials takes a lot of volunteer hours from staff and community members. “It requires a lot of communication to work together

as a staff to host provincials,” said tournament cochair Michael Steeves. Andy Lyster is also a co-chair. “There are going to be hundreds of people working for three straight days. We want to highlight our school and present it the best way we can,” he added. “Hosting a double, girls ‘and boys’ provincials is huge. We are expecting a minimum of 360 athletes,” said Thain. CCHS will be hosting its annual 24-team tournament on Nov. 4 and 5 to prepare for provincials. “We expect half of the teams to come back for provincials because the tournament is that competitive,” said Thain. He listed Sylvan Lake and Innisfail as the teams to beat in league and zones. The CCHS boys are in first place in league play and should advance to zones.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson A touch of beauty - and macro-intent

Six friends gathered for dinner and conversation. Our hostess had stargazer lilies – in this fall-into-winter season! What a treat. Lilies – especially Stargazer lilies – are one of my favourite flowers. To see them in this season of shortening days was pure delight. The lilies lit up the room. Their scent permeated. They definitely enhanced the pleasure of our dinner and conversation. As we left, our hostess gave each of us a lily flower that had not yet opened. “Put it in a glass of water beside your bed,” she said. “When you wake up it will be open and you’ll have that wonderful smell.” So I did. *** The first morning the lily had just opened slightly but I could indeed smell that lovely scent. I smiled and carried on with the activities of the day. On the second morning the lily had opened and it was glorious. The scent was stronger. I carried it into the kitchen, smiled at it over breakfast, took it with me as I moved to my office. Later that day I was hosting an online webcast. Front and centre in my line of vision, the lily was smiling back at me as I spoke on the webcast. Inspiring! I’m writing this on the third morning. The lily is in full radiant bloom and the scent is even stronger. I’m carrying the lily from room to room so I can see it while I move from one activity to another. Every time I flick my eyes in the direction of the lily, I smile. The lily is lifting my heart and spirit and increasing my optimism. Such a gift! *** A few days before the dinner with friends, I’d been reading a book called In Times of Terror, Wage Beauty by Mark Gonzales. I’d been thinking about the state of the world, and how unsettling and traumatic events impact the way we feel and think, even when we’re not directly affected by the events. I’d been thinking about how to stay healthy and sane even when some things in the world seem insane. I was also thinking how sometimes I feel powerless and discouraged in the face of events that seem appalling to me, but over which I have no influence whatsoever. In his book, In Times of Terror, Wage Beauty, Mark Gonzales talks about how we might not feel like we can do much, but we have more power than we know. This quote stopped me cold, and reverberated for days: “…even if your contribution to a better world seems like a small step, never doubt the power of a micro-strategy done with macro-intent.” Macro-intent? What a concept! I can do macro-intent. However tiny my direct impact may seem, I am absolutely capable of having a macro-intent, like “be a positive presence in the world” or “contribute to highest good of all” even when I don’t know what that is. I also remembered the African saying: “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you’ve never spent a night with a mosquito.” *** I’m looking at one little lily flower, and noticing all the ways it’s enhanced my week. Our hostess’s “macro-intent” was to bring some pleasure to her friends. That lily has done so much more than that for me in just a few days. Theme of the week is worth repeating: Never doubt the power of a micro-strategy done with a macro-intent. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, Brian Jean visited our fine city from 5 to 6 p.m. at Smitty’s Restaurant. There were around 50 people in attendance. I was very impressed with what our leader of the opposition had to say. We do live in one of the best places

in the world. We are very blessed to have the resources which we have here in Alberta. It was Premier John Edward Brownlee who was our fifth premier of our province who signed an agreement with the federal government transferring control over Alberta’s natural resources to its provincial government. Many well meaning Albertans are not aware of the fact that Alberta has not always had control of our natural resources. We as Albertans do have to fight for our rights before we lose them. We have a right to be consulted before any government makes any laws which will affect our lives. Bill 6 is an example of our government constructing a bill without consulting the ranchers and farmers

who would be affected. This legislation was passed in the Alberta’s legislature on Dec. 10, 2015 before they consulted with the farmers and ranchers. The government does claim that they will be consulting with farmers and ranchers as they develop this legislation. From what I have been told, there has not been too much consulting so far until this time. Who knows what the real truth is on this matter. The next election is coming in 2019. Albertans will have to decide what sort of government they want to lead them for the next four years. I really do hope that the right decision will be made for everybody’s sake. Time will tell. Fire chiefs name new executive director By Murray Green

The Alberta Fire Chiefs Association (AFCA) introduced Fred Tyrrell as the new executive director to its members on Oct. 15 and 16. After an extensive recruitment process and much qualified interest in the position, the board selected Tyrrell. “As we celebrate the 10-year service of our cur-

rent executive director, Bill Purdy, who recently announced his desire to retire, we are pleased to announce that Tyrrell will step into the role effective Nov. 15. Mr. Purdy has done much to bring our association to where it is today and we wish him well in his next venture. We are pleased that he has agreed to continue to serve the AFCA as an advisor until

the 2017 annual convention and AGM,” said president and Camrose Fire Chief, Peter Krich. The Alberta Fire Chiefs A ssociation, formed in 1948, is comprised of fire chiefs from 450 fire departments from throughout Alberta. Collectively they represent approximately 13,000 firefighters, 11,000 of which are volunteers.

THRIFT SHOP SUPPORT

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose and District Family Thrift Shop board members Maureen Schreiber, back left, and Gloria Wimmer presented $3,000 to Camrose and District Victim Services chair Michele Nelson and Lucy. Spirit of the Land Conference welcomes community involvement By Lori Larsen

The fifth annual Spirit of the Land Conference will take place on Nov. 4 to 6 at University of Alberta Augustana Campus and is open to people from every aspect of society to come and join in conversation

about the broader sense of reconciliation, with not only experts but other members of the community. The theme for this year’s conference is Reconciling Land, Life and Livelihood. “It’s a great opportunity for Camrosians,” said

Spirit of the Land intern Carley Angelstad. “We get a lot of incredible speakers from across Canada and it’s a chance for people to not only hear from these speakers, but to hear from their fellow community members.”

After each speaker groups of eight attendees from different backgrounds and aspects of the community will have the opportunity to speak and listen to each other about the topics at hand in a round table format.

“We are promoting a safe and welcoming atmosphere,”said project coordinator at University of Alberta, Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life Rajan Rathnavalu. Continued on page 17

Better than a phone book!

You’ll never have to recycle a phone book again. Current, up-to-date information, always. A handy and environmentallyfriendly way to put Camrose in your Pocket! THE HISTORY We are often asked, “How did Camrose Now! come about?” The brainwave for Camrose Now! came after repeatedly reading data which suggested that 5% of all people, annually, were dropping their telephone “land lines” in favor of smartphones. Users of smartphones tend to keep most of their contacts in their cell phone directories so we recognized that in the future, there will be far less need for any sort of printed phone book. So, we decided to create an electronic phone directory for the residents and businesses of Camrose and area. Then, in our excitement of planning and brainstorming other possibilities for a comprehensive community app/website we got carried away…we researched which features were popular in every information conveyance platform in Camrose.

THE GAMEPLAN With a long list of reader, viewer and listener favorites to ponder, we set out to determine if it was possible to build an app with this type and this relative quantity of information. We conceptualized how a home screen should be laid out in order for users to quickly source the

news, entertainment options or other information they wanted. We recognized that this technology would, over time, become the primary tool for local business sourcing. And with our “laundry list” of wants and need for an app, we began serious work with one of the most sought after and reputable builders of apps in North America. The hard work was well underway. Users of Camrose Now! tell us that we’ve hit a proverbial “home run” with this handy information tool. People tell us that the search button on the top right corner of the screen is the handiest button on the entire screen. After all, all one needs to do is type in a search word such as “Oil Change”, “Taekwon-Do” or “Retirement” and up come options which make business sourcing a breeze. The Free Buy and Sell ads have been a wonderful tool for private individuals. Being able to find the location of a church, school, apartment house or business using our pin map location feature has earned Camrose Now! rave reviews. The Fun button, which contains Sudoku, crossword puzzles, horoscopes, a joke which changes every day, and an audio joke by Dale Smith, which also changes daily, is one of the highest traffic areas on Camrose Now!

THE CONTENT No other product, locally, lives up to the quality or quantity of content available on Camrose Now! A direct feed to Canada’s largest news organization brings you the latest news and sports headlines and stories. The Forum button, growing in popularity by the week, gives you a chance to voice your opinion on a local or national matter. You can buy or sell real estate on Camrose Now! In fact, you can even get turn-byturn instructions directly to an open house in the community!

Cadets return from European battlefield tour By Angeline Rolf

Four cadets and their commanding officer toured various First World War and Second World War battlefields in Western Europe alongside members of the South Alberta Light Horse Regimental Association (SALHRA) from Aug. 11 to 23. They gathered eagerly at the Edmonton International Airport, for the trip of a lifetime. Chief Warrant Officer Adam Clarkson, Warrant Officer Keianna Greene, Sergeant Rylie Newberry, Master Corporal Calium Beauregard and Captain Angeline Rolf to an estimated 60 different sites and locations in 13 days. The tour started in Caen, France and immediately took them to the Ranville Drop Zone from D Day as well as the Pegasus Museum. From there they participated in a day and a half long tour of D-Day. This particular part of the tour took the members of 3068 to the Beach Heads of the Atlantic Wall, Juno Beach where they participated in a ceremony of Remembrance and then they moved to a local town by the name of Berniers Sur Mur to View Canada House. From there, members of 3068 visited the first of several Canadian Commonwealth War Cemeteries; Beny-Sur-Mur where they participated in another ceremony of Remembrance reading in Flanders Fields, Laying wreaths and standing proudly at attention while Last Post and Reveille played on the bugle. During the tour, these

four cadets and one officer toured the South Alberta Regiment advance Route in France and arrived in a small town by the name of St. Lambert Sur-Dives. This town is were Major Currie, who served with the 29th Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment, received his Victoria Cross for his leadership at St. Lambert. The cadets and Capt. Rolf had the opportunity to visit with town locals and the mayor and alderman of St. Lambert Sur-Dives. For Capt. Rolf, this is one of the most memorable days of the tour for her as the photo of Major Currie receiving his VC is posted in the 3068 Office here in Camrose and the cadets and herself, had the privilege to step foot on the very ground where the photo was originally taken. On this day, they also visited another Canadian Commonwealth War Cemetery, the Bretteville-SurLaize cemetery where two local soldiers from the Camrose Cenotaph lay to rest. These soldiers originally were from the Hay Lakes area. It was a great honor for Sgt. Newberry to locate these two brave soldiers final resting place and pay his respects by leaving a City of Camrose flag to signify his presence there. The tour then led members of 3068 to participate in some First World War history. They learned about the Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Somme. They also toured the Lochnagar Crater, a crater 300 feet in diameter and 70 feet in depth formed by a mine that exploded before 7:30 a.m. on

Sgt. Newberry places a City of Camrose Flag at the head stone of a local soldier from Hay Lakes that rests in the Bretteville-sur Laize cemetery.

The mayor of Eeklo, Belgium, Capt Rolf and the cadets from 3068 Camrose and 3053 Onoway pose for a photo near the Soldier and the Girl Monument.

July 1 to breach German lines. It is now dedicated to peace, fellowship and reconciliation between all nations who fought on the western front. They also had the opportunity to go to Beaumont Hamel and walk through some preserved First World War trenches. The craters and trenches really hit home for all who were there. Even though many had eroded from earth over the years, the conditions and sacrifices soldiers made were still very evident. This led the cadets and staff to the Theipval Monument that bears the names of 72,194 officers and men that fell between July 1916 and March 1918 with no known grave. They toured the Pozieres Windmill and Tank Memorial as well as participated in a re-enactment of the Battle of Courcellette. The members of 3068 also toured Vimy Ridge. They walked through preserved French and German trenches and seen portions of the battle grounds that still are fenced off to this day as not all undetonated explosives have been located. The monument itself took their breath away. The sculptures, craftsmanship, names of our fallen and the significance behind the massive structure left us all speechless. We ended this part of our tour with leaving a City of Camrose flag blowing in the wind. The tour now moved the members of 3068 to Belgium. They travelled to Essex Farm where John McCrea wrote the famous poem, In Flander’s Fields. They toured more Canadian Commonwealth War Cemeteries, Zonnenbeke Museum, St. Julien Memorial, Passchendaele and the Menin Gate where the cadets, officer and SAL-

HRA members participated in their nightly Last Post Ceremony. Now, back to Second World War history, the tour led everyone to Bruges, Belgium. The cadets, Capt. Rolf and members of the SALHRA dined with the mayor, alderman and dignitaries from Bruges and had the honor to engage in conversation and fine dining. The following day, they toured the Adagem Cemetery, the Clanky Tank Memorial and a ceremony with town locals and dignitaries from Eeklo, Belgium at the Soldier and the Girl Monument. Touring the Breedonk Concentration camp was also something that rendered many of those on this tour speechless. It was a “waiting” camp designed to receive political undesirables before their transfer to Germany. They got to tour the barracks, the torture chamber, the kitchen, the grounds and the Execution Square where we held another ceremony of Remembrance. The tour started to wrap up in Bergen Op Zoom, Netherlands. The members of 3068 learned of the Battle of the Scheldt and toured several more Canadian Commonwealth War Cemeteries. The cadets and members of the SALHRA marched into Canadalaan, which means Canada Avenue, where the locals and dignitaries greeted them with excitement and hosted them to lunch and entertainment. A very memorable day for all who participated. Everyone on the tour travelled to Steenburgen/ Welberg Forest and participated in a Bell Ceremony where for the first time locals rang the original bell while a replica bell, that was created to bring back to Canada for the SALH Regiment was rang at the

exact same time. It was a moment marked for the history books. Dining in Markiezenhof Palace also took place in Bergen op Zoom. This palace was built in the 15th Century and it needed to be worthy enough to receive important guests in its day and is now a national monument. The final two days of the tour brought the members of 3068 to learn of Kapelsche Veer, a small island only five miles long and one mile across at its widest point and then to the Hochwald Gap. This particular battle was almost as large as Normandy, but three times the casualties. Then they moved on to Veen and finally to the Groesbeek War Cemetery. Most are Canadians buried there and many people died in the Battle of Rhineland. On the final day of the tour, CWO Clarkson, WO Greene, Sgt. Newberry, Maj-Cpl. Beauregard and Capt. Rolf travelled to Amsterdam and toured the Anne Frank House and they say it is one thing to read the book, it’s a whole new experience to actually walk through her place of hiding during the Second World War. It really hit home. It really was a tour of a life time and created a distinct connection to the history learned in school of the Great War and Second World War. To be able to place foot on the very grounds where so much sacrifice was made to have the freedom we have today, is something that will live on with us for a life time. Many thanks are extended to the SALHRA for the invite to participate, and to all businesses, individuals and organizations that graciously provided donations to allow us to participate in such an incredible experience.

Rose City Roots Society will be presenting the Wooden Horsemen for its first stop in Camrose on Nov. 5 at the Bailey Theatre. The Vancouver bluesrock band Wooden Horsemen will take the stage at 8 p.m. “We are now a six-piece band. This is our first trip back to the area since the band was a folk trio. We have high energy and I think the show will be exciting. With the addition of horns and an expanded rhythm section, the group fuses elements of raw blues and rock, while incorporating a bit of gospel, a bit of dancey with a little of folk,” described band member Steve Beddall. “We started out with folk sound and from there it grew into a more energetic full band. We are thinking of adding a couple of solos to go along with the full band,” he added. “I like both performing as a solo artist and with a full band.” The Wooden Horsemen were honoured to receive a call from the Rose City

Roots Music Society. “Every time I go to Alberta, it is a positive experience. We don’t get to do it enough, unfortunately. There is a sense of a really strong music community and support of bands in Alberta,” said Steve. “It is going to be the first time we are playing in a venue like the Bailey. I’m excited to play there and it would be nice to play at venues like that all of the time.” The band likes the connection with the audience. “People are there to listen and it is a different kind of intimacy. It is more rewarding when the audience is listening to every song.” The band first released an album in 2011 and added an extended album last February. “We are thinking of going back into the studio in the early spring,” Steve said. “It is always exciting. I love performing live more.” Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre. com/tickets, at the Bailey Box Office 5041-50 Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780-672-5510.

Edmonton Celtic rockers Derina Harvey Band will also be playing at the Heisler Community Culture Centre on Nov. 3. It will be a fundraising dinner for the Daysland and District Cultural Arts Society which begins at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. A preview of the high energy Celtic rock sounds of the Derina Harvey Band were heard in Camrose at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Oct. 8 to a sold-out audience. Guitarist Scott Green, drummer Steve Pinsett and bassist Ed Smith are all from Newfoundland, while Harvey is from Labrador. The latest edition, fiddle player Matt O’ Connor, is from New Brunswick. “We came out here in 2002 and Steve (Derina’s husband) was already working in the

music industry with some friends. I met all of these guys in college and hadn’t seen them in a while. We got together to form a band,” recalled Harvey. The area music fans will be treated to a great show. “We have performed at preview shows before and it is a great way to know people, do an interview with you and get a connection when we come back. I’m excited to go to Heisler after meeting such nice people in Camrose and I can’t wait to meet more people,” Harvey said. “There will be space for a dance floor. It will be intimate, but as the same time high energy and I will have a few stories to tell.” The Derina Harvey Band will be playing in Heisler on Nov. 3. Unemployed workers need jobs, growth By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

Jobs and economic growth are the most important files upon which the current federal Liberals are failing miserably – and it’s getting worse. When a government has a firm goaloriented economic policy that serves all sectors of the economy, Canadians have jobs and spending power. In turn, tax revenues are generated for the government and many other things become more easily achievable, everything from the provision of new or more federal programs and services, to investments, to lower taxes. The Prime Minister was elected on a promise to create jobs and grow the economy by only borrowing $10 billion a year and capping the annual federal budgetary deficit at $10 billion. He broke that promise and instead is borrowing as much as three times more, $30 billion. Now, according to economists it is $46.5 billion that has been borrowed. The Prime Minister’s plan is not working. The economy is not growing and regular families across the country including right here in Battle River-Crowfoot are losing income and they are losing jobs. Simply borrowing more and more money is actually not creating jobs. This week in Parliament, the focus was on the failure of the current government to successfully manage the softwood lumber agreement with the United States. Over 95 per cent of Canada’s softwood lumber is exported to the U.S. and 400,000 jobs are dependent on that industry. Admittedly, it is a difficult file and must be renegotiated periodically. Even as a new government, our Conservative government managed to renew the deal in 2006 because we had to stop the 27 per cent tariffs put on Canadian softwood lumber. It was hurting many Canadians communities, firms, workers and families. Since the new Liberal government came in, there was no mention of softwood lumber in the trade minister’s mandate and even today, no discussions of any significance on the file are taking place. It is a massive industry, yet the Liberal’s response to critics about the file is not to worry because the PM was invited to a dinner with the U.S. president and he was able to take his family there, and we had the president back here and he spoke in Parliament and we have never seen this before. Well, if that is what Canadians are to take some solace in, given how the United States negotiates, we are in trouble. Canadians know that when they borrow money it has to be paid back, but the Prime Minister’s plan is to pay it back with higher taxes. The Liberals have already hiked taxes on small businesses; cancelled the tax credits for regular families. Coming next is a payroll tax hike and a National Carbon tax hike; and, they are now considering a tax on watching Netflix – opposite to what they said in the election campaign. These taxes will hit everyone. We have natural resources, gas and oil, which are in trouble; the softwood lumber file, which it seems has had nothing happening in the last year; and our economy, which, even with all the spending the government is doing, is not growing. Nothing the Liberals are doing seems to be working for average Canadians.

Learn about grief and bereavement at workshop By Lori Larsen

Dealing with grief is handled differently for each situation and by each individual but people can often benefit from more knowledge and a greater understanding. The Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) will be offering a one-day Bereavement and Grief workshop on Friday, Nov. 4 from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Camrose Public Library. “Since 2011 we have met hundreds of wonderful people who have taught us the uniqueness of grief and loss,” said certified grief facilitator Donna Erickson. “This seminar is for everyone. Learn how to walk alongside another who is suffering loss (of any type.)

Understand the nature of grief and how it affects your physical, mental, emotional, cognitive and social realms.” The workshop is designed for people who are coping with grief and loss as well as for anyone interested in becoming a grief helper, supporting people going through a loss. The workshop will include: how to be a companion/grief helper, types of loss (mobility, health, earning potential), importance of integrating loss into our own lives first, uniqueness of individual grief journeys, recognizing the signs of complicated grief, and how to access appropriate community resources.

CHILD SUPPORT

“PCN physicians and staff are very pleased with the success of the grief and bereavement workshops which we have offered for over four years now,” said Camrose PCN executive director Stacey Strilchuk. “Participant feedback has been extremely positive and we know we are making a difference in people’s lives by offering this type of support in the community.” The workshop is free and will include a lunch, however space is limited. For more information or to register for the workshop contact the Camrose PCN at 780-608-4927. Registrations will be accepted unit Nov. 2.

Stop family violence By Murray Green

The incidence of family violence in our community is all too frequent. In 2015, Camrose Police Service responded to 94 reports of domestic violence, rising significantly from previous years. November is Family Violence Prevention Month and the Family Violence Response Council (FVRC) is coordinating the campaign to deliver roses on Nov. 1 and 2 in the downtown core by FVRC members. Alberta consistently has one of the highest rates of family violence among all provinces in Canada, along with one of the highest levels of family violence related suicide and homicide. “Roses for this campaign have been generously donated by Pedersen’s Florists,” said Sheralyn Dobos, program director for the Family Violence Action Society. “Vases are donated by the Camrose Family Thrift Shop, Centra Cam Outlet Store and ReStore, and friends of the campaign.” The Family Violence Response Council is calling on citizens of Camrose to speak out against family violence.

“The Red Rose awareness campaign was so wellreceived in 2015, we are doubling its size.” Camrose Family Violence Response Council, a 12-member interagency body, invites you and your workplace to take an active role in raising awareness of family violence in our community. By displaying our single red rose in a prominent place in your workplace for the entire month of November, along with the card bearing the message, “In memory of the women, children and men in Alberta who have died as victims of domestic violence,” you can join with 120 other Camrose area workplaces in this awareness event. “We have chosen to use a fresh cut rose for this awareness event. As it withers and dies, it is a symbol of the experience of too many victims of violence. At the end of November, the vase will be picked up from your location and kept for use again next year,” said Dobos. If you’d like to participate, make your staff aware that you intend to display the rose and card. Call the Family Violence Action Society at 780-672-0141.

Dodge Power Wagon When life takes you off the main path Candice Stone Sales Consultant cstone@camrosechrysler

By Murray Green

When power matters, the 2017 Dodge Power Wagon will be ready for action. Available at Camrose Chrysler, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Crew Cab 4×4 is a truck for serious off-road enthusiasts who want to make a statement by driving a big boy pickup. The truck comes with a 6.4-litre Hemi gas engine that puts out about 410-horses, and more importantly, 429-pound feet of torque. It is matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission and it has a 4:10 rear axle ratio. This Power Wagon is capable of towing just under 10,000 pounds, so you can bring your other toys with you on trips. “This truck seats you high above the rest with its lift kit, big tires, wheels and graphics that lets everyone know you are driving a Power Wagon,” said Camrose Chrysler sales consultant Candice Stone. “You can’t call it a monster until you have seen all of the extras.” It truly has off-roading in mind. The 4×4 offers locking front and rear axles, which you can operate close to the steering wheel. “It has the handy shift-on-the-fly manual transfer case to lock it into 4-wheel drive and you can even disconnect the sway bars electronically for better traction on difficult terrain. The Ram Power Wagon has a hill descent control system for added safety going down steep descends,” said Stone. Your fearless attitude of getting stuck, or helping your neighbour will be backed up with a factory 12,000-pound pulling winch. On the inside, the huge interior comfortably sits six adults. You will love the large fold down center console in the front and the back seat that folds up to offer extra infloor storage bins. The Power Wagon’s seats are comfortable and everything is easy to reach. Large gauges are easy to read and there is a easy to read seven inch driver information centre in the middle of the dash. It contains plenty of storage

area cup holders. Another great thing about the new Power Wagon is the fact it comes well equipped with a ton of standard equipment including keyless entry, power windows, power door locks, cruise control and Chrysler’s Uconnect system, which gives you access to Bluetooth, Sirius radio and a variety of apps. “You can add power fold exterior mirrors with built-in turn signals, courtesy lights to see under the truck, a leather steering wheel and a built-in spot for your garage door opener,” explained Stone. An optional camera has an eye on the cargo area. A navigational system built

into the Uconnect screen offers weather, traffic, and other information so you can turn your Ram Power Wagon into an office complete with Wi-Fi. A few more options include rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, remote start and a spray-in bed liner. You can even have a tool box for your gadgets. A box is built into the truck on each side of the bed and they are both waterproof and lockable. You can add a wide variety

of accessories to hold guns, fishing rods and extra items. For hot days, there are plugs in the bottom of the box for drainage if you want to carry ice. The tool boxes and tailgate all secure when you lock the cab doors. “The Power Wagon may be a large powerful truck, but it rides more like a car than a pickup,” she said. “It doesn’t always have to be a beast. It has cylinder deactivation, so it is only running on four

cylinders at highway speeds.” The Power Wagon delivers a lot of truck for the price tag. It is well suited for true off-road enjoyment. The warranty offers a three or five-year powertrain backing with roadside assistance. You can drive the 2017 Power wagon by visiting Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East, Camrose. Speakers express appreciation for Maurers By Dan Jensen

Dr. Darryl Schultz, Yvonne Allan, Randall Nickel, Marshall Wideman, Pauline Maron and Michael Maurer paid tribute to Bonnie and Dwight Maurer at the Battle River Community Foundation Builders Dinner Oct. 21. “Both successful business people, they realized early the truth of the saying ‘You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.’ Giving generously is what Dwight and Bonnie are known for,” said longtime family friend Yvonne Allan. “Thank you Bonnie and Dwight for living your values and for the vision of what could be in this community to support youth,” added Yvonne. “The turnout tonight reflects the high esteem people in this community have for Bonnie and Dwight and the Battle Riv-

er Community Foundation. Wouldn’t it be too bad if we never had the chance to meet them,” said builders dinner emcee Dr. Schultz. “One description of leadership is that you never ask someone to do what you aren’t willing to do yourself. That is clearly something demonstrated by Dwight and Bonnie. They invite youth into their home for special dinners, painted the entire Gateway Centre and mobilized volunteers to renovate it, and were the first people to provide a meal to my family when my mom passed away ten years ago. Another key principle is that people will usually live up, or down, to expectations. Bonnie has high expectations for the people she works with,” said Randal Nickel, executive director at the Open Door from 2005 to 2016. “Quietly, Bonnie and Dwight have given back to this community for many

years. And tonight I would like to congratulate them on being recognized for what they have done and for what they continue to do in this community,” said Marshall Wideman, brother of Bonnie Maurer and Battle River Community Foundation board member. “For some unknown reason you could ask Dwight any time and he knew exactly how many shifts he had to work until he could retire. And that wasn’t a year before retirement, that was 20 years before retirement,” added Marshall. “Mom and Dad have supported me in everything I have done, encouraged me no matter what. They told me my entire life that I would succeed at anything I put my mind to. Taught me to take pride in what I do. Stand up for what is right, to forgive and forget, and to be open minded. They have taught me

to take life seriously, but also to remember to have fun and enjoy life,” said Pauline Maron, daughter of Bonnie and Dwight. “Drive, determination, faith and high aspirations have got our parents to where they are today. From those days of it being hard

to pay a $4 phone bill to now, in this room, celebrating the success they have had, not only building their lives, but also in building into the lives of their children, their family and many others in our community,” said Michael Maurer, son of Bonnie and Dwight.

tions from time to time, our strength is based on hundreds of modest gifts received from individuals who wish to give back.” Battle River Community Foundation has been able to make donations totalling more than $4.4 million over the last 21 years to organizations who recognize the needs in their communities and develop initiatives and projects to meet those needs. “These are necessary services within our communities and are made possible through all those who choose to support the foundation,” said Grue,

adding that in the last year alone, more than 850 donors made gifts totalling just under $1 million. “Best of all, after all the grant cheques have been delivered, the principal remains intact so that earnings and granting can and will go on into the future.” Grue said the BRCF board realizes all it has done is provide a conduit or vehicle between donors and recipient organizations. “There will always be needs and we will continue to strive to ensure our foundation will always be there to meet them.”

BRCF has been a force for good in community By Dan Jensen

Vivianne Grue shared information about the Battle River Community Foundation at the Builders Dinner Oct. 21.

The Battle River Community Foundation has been an incredible force for good since its formation in 1995. “The foundation was born from a vision to establish an ongoing, longterm means of supporting important community ideals related to health, education, the arts, culture, recreation and more,” said BRCF board chair Vivianne Grue. “Its growth and success in doing good is the result of thousands of caring people wishing to make a difference. While we receive major contribu-

Battle River Community Foundation paid tribute to Dwight and Bonnie Maurer for all the ways in which they have contributed to the growth and well-being of Camrose and area at its annual Community Builders dinner Oct. 21. BRCF board chair Vivianne Grue thanked the Maurers for sharing their time, talents and resources to make their community better, safer and more caring. “Dwight and Bonnie both believe that the best way to help others is a hand up rather than a hand out,” said Vivianne. The Maurers have spent a lifetime putting their beliefs into action. They feel fortunate to have been blessed by God and are committed to sharing their blessings in whatever way they can. “God has blessed Dwight and I in many ways,” said Bonnie. “Not so we can

live the blessed life, but so that we can be a blessing to others. I believe generosity is a requirement for happiness. I also believe when God gives us an assignment he also provides the resources to carry it out – talents, finances and people.” Bonnie is co-founder and ongoing champion of Camrose Open Door, which provides shelter for homeless youth, while Dwight is an active supporter of the Kids Campus Child Care program, which serves about 150 children every month – giving them a good foundation for life through high quality care, socialization and stimulation. Their support was key to the Open Door being able to purchase and pay for the Gateway Centre, where its programming is now centred, as well as the Keystone Centre, where it offers shelter and support. “Without them the Open Door could not have been able to finance the pur-

chase,” said long time friend Yvonne Allan. “By doing what they felt was necessary for the youth they were able to assist the Open Door in doing what was possible. Their generosity allowed growth that otherwise would have been impossible.” The Maurers learned early on in their married life the importance of leaving the world a better place than they found it. They were able to purchase their first home with the help of an interest free loan from Dwight’s grandfather, and in the years that followed supported a number of organizations, both financially and otherwise. The legacies they have left to their children are those of integrity, generosity, value of hard work and value of going on a holiday. “Pauline and I are who we are today because of who our parents are,” said Michael Maurer. Dwight began a 26-year career with the Edmonton

Fire Department in 1970, eventually climbing to the rank of captain. “First and foremost Dwight was a fireman,” said Marshall Wideman, Bonnie’s brother. “This is how he provided for his family. As a fireman you are the first responder to the scene. You drive up facing

the complete unknown, then you have the job of trying to make all the right decisions. Put this in perspective: when was the last time you held someone for the first time as (he/she) passed away in your arms. Now that is a tough job.” Continued on page 23

Maurers are true community builders Continued from page 22

The Maurers moved to Camrose in 1985 after purchasing Wideman Drapery from Bonnie’s mother, Margaret Wideman. In 1997, Dwight and Marshall (Wideman) opened Wideman Paint and Decor. While he is now retired, Dwight still installs blinds and does books for Carpet One, another business co-owned by Wideman Paint. The Maurers were unaware of the plight of Camrose youth until they heard a presentation by a Camrose police officer during the early days of Wideman Paint and Decor. “He (police officer) stated that on any given night there were as many as 60 people sleeping outside and cautioned us about an increasing number of break-ins and thefts from local businesses,” Dwight recalls. “He told me many of the perpetrators were teenagers who didn’t have a home to go to. That really tugged at our hearts and consciences.” The groundwork for the Open Door was laid in 1998 with a youth outreach ministry initiated by the Church of God. “Under the umbrella of the Church of God a summer youth worker was hired who identified 42 homeless youth,” said Yvonne. “The worker and Church provided support to these youth but by the end of the summer Bonnie knew that support needed to be continued.” The Maurers have seen a lot of success stories come out of the Open Door over the years. “So many young people who were at risk now have jobs and families and a positive lifestyle,” said Bonnie. “I am so grateful to have played a part in making that possible. Bill Johnson says we raise our own standards as we care for the most marginalized in our city.” The Maurers are grateful to the community and Battle River Community Foundation for funding the Open Door and its programs. “BRCF and many of you have assisted in funding programs at the Open

Door,” said Dwight. “The youth that have received a hand thank you. Many have gone on and now have families and jobs and are making a positive contribution to society. Some have contacted the Open Door and stated they do not know where they would be today if they had not received a hand up at a critical time.” Dwight noted money is a tool that can be used to do good in the world. “What we do today will affect tomorrow. Some day, each one of us is going to have to leave everything behind. Perhaps the wisest person who ever lived stated that he worked and prospered and he would have to leave everything to someone who would have control and would be either wise or foolish. It would be received by someone who had not worked for it. Would it be wise, while we are able, to support the BRCF? The foundation should be able to build wealth over the generations benefitting hundreds of thousands of people. We can be assured the money will be distributed to worthy causes in this area or to projects of our choosing even after we are long gone.” The Community Builders dinner raised more than $51,000 for a Dwight and Bonnie Maurer endowment fund that will support the Open Door. Of that amount, approximately $18,000 came from an auction, conducted by Doug Johnson, which included cinnamon buns, Dwight’s broken-in fireman’s hat, an art sketch by Bonnie, the right to be the first in line at the buffet table, and a delectable cheesecake made with love by Pauline Maron. An additional $21,000 was raised from $100 sponsorships of beef donated by Skor Simmentals to Camrose and District Neighbor Aid’s food bank. Supporting the Battle River Community Foundation gives a “hand up” to those in need – just as the Maurers are doing.

Honour your departed friend or relative …with a memorial gift that will do good in their name forever.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

PEACE OUT

Put Camrose in your Pocket!

Customers visiting the Camrose Registry office on Halloween were treated to the sight of the staff dressed up as hippies from the 1970s. Bellbottoms, fringe, flowers, paisley and peace signs were the order of the day for these creative women who make it an annual event to wear costumes for Halloween. Left to right, staff include Cathy Cockcroft, Melissa Mills, Astrid Blaeser, Karen Dammann, Rita Giles and Kayla McNabb.

F R E E A PP Wideman nominated for Canadian volunteer of the year By Murray Green

Now that Camrose Special Olympics chair Carol Wideman was named the Volunteer of the Year by the Alberta Special Olympics, her nomination was sent on to the national level. She received her award at its annual general meeting and awards luncheon on Oct. 15 in Calgary. The provincial award garnered more support to be nominated for the Special Olympics Canada Jim Thompson Award Nov. 17, in Toronto. “Carol brings more to the organization than just her time. She is an excellent role model for the athletes whereby she is respectful, kind, patient and accepting of everyone and their individual abilities,” said Katharine Bailey in a letter of support. Carol has been involved as a Special Olympics volunteer and chair of Special Olympics Camrose Alberta affiliate for the past 10 years. She is the driving force behind Special Olympics in Camrose and its surrounding area. Her passion for the movement is contagious and she motivates others to jump on board to accomplish a number of fundraising and marketing initiatives. “Carol spends time talking, watching and cheering on each and every athlete. She has a great ability to make each athlete feel special, feel like they are an important part of Special Olympics, and feel like they make a contribution to the team,” added Regina Freeborn, vice-chair of Special Olympics Camrose. “Carol’s enthusiasm inspires the rest of the affiliate to make our organization great.” Carol has taken a somewhat loosely structured and fledgling local Special Olympic program and, through her leadership and passion, turned the Camrose affiliate into an extremely well-organized and high profile organization that supports over 100 athletes. In the last year alone,

she spearheaded the No Good Way campaign, Draft an Athlete and Goals for Kids (Fundraisers in partnership with the Camrose Kodiak junior hockey club), plus placed profiles of over 75 individual athletes in The Camrose Booster, liaising with corporate sponsors (Staples, Mary Brown, Safeway, ATCO Gas, Walmart) and arranged for photo opportunities and awareness displays, and coordinated LETR’s Free Our Finest weekend. Rarely does a week go by when there is not local media exposure making the community aware of the exciting activities that the athletes are involved in.

Carol Wideman

She is excited to advance the ongoing exceptional partnerships with the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, CLBI as well as the Camrose City Police. Carol is involved directly with the sports programs and not only coaches a number of sports, but advocates for all Special Olympic athletes. She is in attendance at the majority of practices, games and out of town tournaments including chairing every tournament that Camrose has held. She promoted the expansion of new sports in the community including bocce, crosscountry skiing, athletics, curling, golf, Active Start and soccer. She has rallied the community to support the athletes and, most importantly, she has given the participants the confidence to proudly identify themselves as Special Olympics athletes.

Kodiaks ran over by Pontiacs By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks were doubled by the Bonnyville Pontiacs 4-2 to continue an up and down autumn. “We have been playing okay, but that is not good enough for us. We are a little inconsistent and we haven’t got a big winning streak going yet. It is something we are trying to fix, so hopefully we can do that,” said Mackenzie Bauer, who has 10 goals and eight assists in 14 games. “One thing we need to do is get better starts. We have had some slow starts and we end up playing catch-up. We need better starts and come ready to play,” he stated. After Bonnyville opened the scoring, Liam Motley netted an equalizer less than three minutes later in the first period on Oct. 22. “We should be mentally ready when the puck drops. It starts in the morning when you wake up and think about the game,” said Bauer. The Pontiacs scored three times in the middle frame, two from former Kodiaks player P.J. Marrocco, to force Camrose to play from behind. A lthough A lex Mo wb r ay c ol le c t e d a ta l ly for t he Kodiaks on a power play, Bonnyville shut down the offence the rest of the game to skate away with the two points. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 41 of the 45 shots he faced. Camrose fired 32 shots in the direction of the Bonnyville net. “We get up for the big games and we need to be ready to go, regardless of who we are playing. Fast starts are better than trying to come back,” said Bauer. “Playing tough teams are a good test for us. The league is different this year and it is more competitive in the south. We just need to be ready every game.” Bauer now finds himself as one of the older players and a leader on the team. “I’m older now and all 20-year-olds have to be the leaders. It is expected from the coaching staff and the younger guys on the team.” The bears controlled the Calgary Mustangs 5-1 when they got an early jump on the horses, Oct. 21. Bauer scored the only marker of the first period. Camrose rallied early in the middle frame to score three before the Mustangs added one of their own. T.J. Brown, Colin Schmidt and Angus Scott were the marksmen for the Kodiaks. Cooper Johnson added an insurance tally in the third period. Goalie Gora stopped 22 of 23 and Camrose hit 40 shots on the Mustangs. The Kodiaks host the Lloydminster Bobcats on Nov. 4 and Calgary Mustangs again on Nov. 5.

City appoints auditor By Lori Larsen

During a special council meeting held on Oct. 24 administration recommended the appointment of Grant Thornton as the external auditor for the City of Camrose for the fiscal years Jan. 1 of this year through Dec. 31, 2017. Councillor Wayne Throndson made the motion to appoint Grant Thornton as the external auditor at the quoted rates of $44,000 for the 2016 and $45,500 for 2017. The motion was carried. The original recommendation was presented to council on Oct. 17 at the regular council meeting and a motion to refer the proposals to the Oct. 19 Finance Committee of Council Meeting for further review was made and carried. After review of the proposals and supplementary information the committee supported the proposal from Grant Thornton based on the hours estimated to complete the audit and the firm’s significant understanding of the City’s financial records and operations resulting from their (Grant Thornton’s) years of providing auditing services to the city.

Affordable bi-level close to parks

Cole Walker By Lori Larsen

This nicely maintained bi-level is located in a well established quiet neighbourhood close to parks and the golf course and is priced with budget in mind. Completely finished, this home offers plenty of space for a growing family with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two living areas. The main floor has a large comfy living room that opens to the family dining area adjacent to the kitchen. The large front window along with patio doors off the dining area and another large window in the kitchen fills the entire area with tons of natural light. The kitchen features a huge farm sink, amazing resurfaced concrete counter tops and popular white subway tile backsplash. Completing the main floor are two bedrooms and a four-piece bathroom that has some trendy updates. The lower level of the home has two more bedrooms, a three-piece bathroom, a large utility room with plenty of storage and a generously sized living area including a kitchenette with fridge, stove and microwave. This area is perfect for large family gatherings and storing and cooking all the

Tylor Keller extras during special occasions or can be used by older children as a place to socialize with friends. The patio doors lead out to an oversized two-tiered deck, a fantastic place to entertain, featuring tons of seating for guests. The deck steps down into a large lot with mature trees and a manicured lawn which is fully fenced. In the back there is also a heated double car garage, which eliminates brushing off snow or scraping windshields on cold winter days, as well as a RV parking space. Included in the purchase are the fridge, stove, built-in dishwasher, washer and dryer. This wonderful family home at 6216-48B Avenue is priced at an affordable $299,000. There will be an open house on Friday Nov. 4 from 2 to 5 p.m. For a personal viewing contact Cole Walker or Tylor Keller at: Central Agencies Inc. 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 or Cole cell 780-679-5544 Tylor cell 780-281-0016
