November 11th is a special day of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our country during times of war, conflict and peace. It is an opportunity to honour all military personnel, past and present, and to offer your expression of thanks to those brave women and men who gave their lives or were in a fight for freedom.

The Remembrance Day Ceremony

in Camrose at the CRE is something dear to the heart of Tom Coultis, who, for 40 years, was Sergeant-at-Arms of the Camrose Legion. As usual, Tom, with 12 years of service with the 14th Calgary Tanks, nine years of instructional duty with the 19th Alberta Dragoons and 12 years of service to the Camrose Air Cadets, will help set up the venue in anticipation of an expected large and appreciative crowd. It is a role that he has enjoyed for over 60 years! In addition, Mr. Coultis will bear the honour of serving in the colour party on this special day. Buy and wear a poppy. All proceeds support the remarkable work of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coins

Direct to Smelter – Precious Metals Roadshow returns to Camrose Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coin returns to Camrose November 16th and 17th. You can bring your gold, silver, coins and Canadian paper money to the Camrose Library between 10 am and 5 pm each day. No appointment is required. Barry Dick is a precious metals buyer and President of Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coin. “Ursa Major has the unique advantage of dealing direct with a smelter” said Dick. “That allows us to cut out one or even two middlemen. Ursa Major purchases gold and silver from other gold buyers, pawn shops, dentists, jewellers and jewellery makers as well as from the general public.” In terms of the US

dollar, gold and silver prices may appear low. The weak Canadian dollar means prices are strong. Ursa Major analyzes your gold, silver and coins while you watch, with the process explained to you in detail. Coins with numismatic value are set aside from those with a ‘melt’ value. Silver items such as jewellery and flatware are analyzed for hallmark identification. Items thought to contain gold will also be analyzed for hallmarks, and then confirmed using precise testing that is done while you watch. Then a cash offer is made and you decide to sell or not. With Winkler, Manitoba heritage, Dick was raised in BC and took out his first gold claim when he turned 16 in the 1970s. An ardent gold panner, he was a regular at the world championship gold panning competition with a personal best of 3rd place in 1984. Now he concentrates on building the wholesale business with jewellers and brokers while taking the roadshow out one or two times a month across Western Canada.

“People bring in all kinds of interesting items, but for the most part it is a broken or old chain, unloved jewellery, a single earring, and out of fashion items like charm bracelets. We also accept dental gold but it should be clean. Lately I see more and more silver flatware sets, but before you bring those in please make sure it says ‘Sterling’ on the handle. There is a lot of silver plated flatware that we can’t buy due to the low silver content,” says Dick. Another valuable item is coin with silver content. Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars and Dollars from Canada and America can be sorted and the silver content determined in no time at all. People are encouraged to bring in any and all coins for assessment. Ursa Major also assesses and purchases Canadian and Dominion of Canada bank notes. Ursa Major has extensive experience working with estate sales, executors, widows and widowers in a respectful and caring manner. No appointment necessary.

Remembrance Day honours our freedom By Murray Green

The Remembrance Day service held on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition beginning at 11 a.m. will not only be honouring those who gave their lives, but also those who live with the horrors of war throughout their lives. The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will lead the Remembrance Day ceremony and members ask that people be seated by 10:45 a.m. so they can be prepared to start on time because of the observance of two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. Legion members and cadets from South Alberta Light Horse Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and Air Cadets in Camrose will participate in the service. The CCHS band will be providing the music and community groups such as the cubs and scouts will join the parade march led by veterans. It is easy to honour those who gave their lives so we could enjoy freedom. It is much harder to help those who return scarred

from what they saw or did in war situations. “Edmonton soldiers Capt. Clint Guenther and Sgt. Derek Rosendal will be the guest speakers at the Camrose service. One was in Afghanistan in 2008 as a armoured ambulance crew commander,” said Camrose Legion organizer Lloyd Dool. “Guarding the cenotaph will be Master Cpl. Bauld and Cpl. Comer, who is from the Camrose area.” Mayor Norm Mayer will be making his address to honour local people who fought in the world conf licts. MLA Kevin Sorenson will be attending a different service, but will send a message. A local cadet will read from a letter about someone who is remembered at the tomb of the unknown soldier. “We are having the Camrose Children’s Choir back to perform again this year,” said Comrade Dool, about the popular addition. A reading of In Flanders Fields, several songs and laying of wreaths will also be part of the service.

FIRST POPPY

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion president Dale Debnam pins the first poppy sale on City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer on Oct. 28. Poppies are available at many of the businesses throughout the city until Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.

Price artifacts rest at war museum Submitted

Canadian War Museum acquires artifacts related to the last Canadian soldier killed during the First World War. The medal set and the memorial plaque in honour of Private George Lawrence Price, the last Canadian soldier killed during the First World War, have been donated to the Canadian War Museum. Private Price died at 10:58 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918—two minutes before the armistice went into effect. “The cost of the First World War in terms of human lives was overwhelming,” said Stephen Quick, director general of the Canadian War Museum. “One of the more poignant moments is the loss of Private Price mere minutes before the guns fell silent.” Born in Falmouth, Nova Scotia, Private Price was a 24-year-old farm labourer in Saskatchewan when he was conscripted into military service. After training in Canada, he was sent to Bramshott Military Camp in England and eventually assigned to the 28th Battalion. Two months before his death, Private Price survived a gas attack at the battle to cross the Canal du Nord in France. There are several conflicting stories of Private Price’s death, but official records note that at approximately 10:50 a.m.

on November 11, 1918, an enemy sniper shot Private Price in the chest while he was on patrol in Ville-surHaine, Belgium, just outside Mons. At the time, Private Price served as a runner for A Company, 28th Canadian Infantry Battalion, and was chasing German soldiers through of a series of houses. Despite the administration of first-aid, Private Price died a few minutes later and is buried at St. Symphorien Military Cemetery, Belgium. He is generally recognized as the last Commonwealth soldier to be killed during the First World War. The artifacts were donated by the Royal Canadian Legion in Kentville, Nova Scotia, with the support of the descendants of Private Price. Price’s story is currently included at the end of the First World War gallery. The medal set will be displayed in an exhibition in 2018 on the Last Hundred Days campaign of the First World War, curated by Dr. Tim Cook and Dr. J. L. Granatstein. The Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history. Its mission is to promote public understanding of Canada’s military history in its personal, national, and international dimensions. Work of the Canadian War Museum is made possible in part through financial support of the Government of Canada.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Friday, November 11, 2016 The Camrose Branch No. 57 of the Royal Canadian Legion is conducting their annual Wreath and Poppy Campaign. The purpose of the Poppy Fund is to provide assistance to ex-service personnel and their families who are in need. However, as the funds raised usually exceed that need, the surplus is used to improve life in the community through donations to local charities, purchase of hospital equipment as well as bursaries to local students that may have need. The annual Remembrance Day Service will be held at the CRE starting shortly before 11:00 a.m. Members of the general public are asked to attend and please be seated no later than 10:45 am so the veterans may enter, and the service commence, timed so that the two minute silence may be observed at 11:00 a.m. Come and help remember the participants of both world wars, Korea and Afghanistan as well as those personnel serving on United Nations Peace Keeping duties throughout the world today.

Green earns trip to rodeo finals

GEDays

SALE

By Murray Green

Layton Green of Meeting Creek earned a trip to the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton Nov. 9 to 13. The local cowboy qualified in second place in the saddle bronc event. The 22-year-old rider had a solid season and is within reach of the championship title in his second trip to the finals in three years as a professional cowboy. Last year, he was sixth heading into the championships. In 2015, he ended up fourth overall and took home more than $42,000. This year, he is going for it all at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. The Edmonton Exhibition had decided to run a fall Livestock Show and the Canadian Finals Rodeo would fit well with this event. The Canadian National Finals Rodeo was launched in 1974 at the Edmonton Gardens, with prize money a substantial $29,278. The inaugural finals attracted almost 30,000 people and made money that first season setting the stage for a move to the Edmonton Coliseum the following year, the venue that has been its home ever since. At its 40th anniversary event in 2014, CFR prize money climbed to $1.47 million and continues to attract world class rodeo athletes as well as rural and urban fans in record numbers. Local favourites

Other local cowboys to watch for at the NFR are number six ranked Justin and Brett McCarroll of Camrose in team roping, Curtis and Cody Cassidy of Donalda in steer wrestling. Cody was the 2015 steer wrestling champion and Curtis was the high point champion.

Learn how to explore your family history By Lori Larsen

Discovering the branches of family history can turn out to be a fascinating and sometimes intriguing experience. For anyone who has ever been curious about the lives of their ancestors, genealogy is an amazing way to uncover the past. The Camrose Branch of Alberta Genealogical Society will be hosting speaker Lorraine Lohr Cathro on Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Camrose Public Library. The presentation will run from 7 to 8 p.m. and everybody is welcome. Lorraine Lohr Cathro was raised on a farm southwest of Stettler. She taught at the elementary and university levels for 20 years and then worked in the financial sector. Using short stories about people and events, Lorraine has published two books—

a combination of family history and memoir. Lorraine’s first book titled Roots & Adventures: A Prairie Childhood related her child-

hood and family history. In her second book titled Branching Out: Adventures & Roots, she blends family stories and history written from the

perspective of a woman marrying, developing a career and raising a family. During her presentation Lorraine will discuss the processes used and the rewards and challenges of that collab-

orative writing using excerpts from her second book to illustrate her points. For more information, please see Lorraine’s website: http://www.lorrainecathro. com.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Messy in the Middle

I’ve been reading Rising Strong by Brené Brown based on her research about why some people grow from their setbacks while others get stuck. As I began dipping into the book, I found myself thinking about the life of a butterfly–a metaphor for transformation. An egg hatches into a caterpillar that eats everything in sight, spins itself a cocoon, and some time later breaks out of the cocoon as a butterfly. Nice. ***

Until a few years ago, I just assumed the caterpillar nodded off to sleep and magically woke up as a butterfly. Then I heard a scientist describe what goes on inside that peaceful-looking cocoon. From the outside it looks like nothing much is happening. But inside? It’s violent! Gruesome! Probably not suitable for children! Maybe you already know this, but I didn’t. Within the caterpillar are a few cells with the capacity to become part of a butterfly. They are called “imaginal” cells. (That name tickles me.) When the first imaginal cells show up, the caterpillar’s immune system perceives them as enemies and kills them off, like good immune cells are supposed to do. But the imaginal cells keep coming. Eventually there are so many that the immune cells can’t kill them fast enough and they take over the caterpillar’s body. There is a stage somewhere during this process that the (former) caterpillar is basically liquid goo. ***

Thinking back to times of major challenge or change in my life, I remember that stage! After you know something is ending or changing but you have no idea what is emerging, there’s an in-between stage. You might try to fend off what appears to be the disastrous end of life as you know it, but that doesn’t work. You don’t know who you are any more. You might be consumed with self-doubt and confusion, or terror. No, you’re not crazy– though it might feel like it. ***

Back to the cocoon. Within that goo, the imaginal cells begin to take shape into a body and wings. Eventually the butterfly cannot be contained by the cocoon. The cocoon has served its purpose and the butterfly breaks out–possibly still with damp wings, but able to fly. It doesn’t look like the result of a violent transformation. Brown’s book gives examples of how the middle of a creative process is the hardest and messiest part. That’s when the toughest challenges show up, the unanticipated barriers, the strongest emotions. The middle of a big change is like the cocoon stage. What may not be visible from the outside is the tumultuous turbulence inside. Lots of stories of overcoming challenges focus on the hero’s or heroine’s bold and clever moves to success. The stories don’t tell about lying awake at night worrying, or being blindsided by toxic emotion that turns you into a person you really don’t like very much. Brown’s advice? Dive deep. She says the more you are prepared to experience fully what is happening, the more you are likely to discover wisdom and opportunities. I’m being simplistic here–in part because I haven’t finished reading her book, but the pattern fits my experience and I see parallels in other fields too.

Letters to the Editor Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Carbon protest

It’s hard to miss the large sign on Highway 26 that invites folks to participate in a convoy to “protest the NDP carbon tax.” My first reaction to this was disappointment that someone is trying to turn a conservation effort into a political football. The purpose of this tax is to encourage conservation and less wasteful use of our resources until some kind of alternatives can be found. Which political party would not be in favour of conservation? I can see that this will be a difficult effort since many folks can’t even bring themselves to drive the speed limit to save fuel. I can imagine the outrage would any government have “the nerve” to reduce speed limits to conserve fuel, as was done in the early 1970s. It appears the fact that our fuels are a finite and declining asset has not sunk in. By the way, other provinces with different political parties have also instituted some form of incentives to use less fuel. If you read Mr. Malone’s article in the Oct. 25

edition of the Camrose Booster you would have seen a perfect illustration of the change in attitude toward consumption within one generation. It would seem that getting used to having more is much easier than doing with less, which is in the offing. The United Nations Environmental Program recently published a report entitled, Global Material Flows and Resource Productivity. Sounds boring until you read the second sentence, ”Overall, the global economy expanded more than threefold over the four decades since 1970, population almost doubled and global material extraction tripled.” If less than twice as many people used three times more “global Material”- oil, coal, grain, minerals, water, soil, gravel, gas – the next 40 years, with more people and wealth, will push the world’s resources to and past their breaking point. To make a lengthy story short; at these rates of extraction the world will run out of all of the above in 497 years. The “if” in this scenario is present rates of extraction. If humanity comes to its senses and starts a serious effort at conservation this timeline can be changed but experts tell us that to this point there is nothing on the horizon that is close to the energy sources we now use and major changes in our behaviour are coming. Think of how convenient it would be to carry a pail of electricity to your electric car. The good news in all of this is that thousands of people are working on alternatives and are making prog-

ress. The latest is the “accidental” discovery (They were looking for something else) of a process that can turn carbon dioxide into ethanol. It has worked in the lab but a prototype large scale facility will determine if this holds true for a commercial effort. Wait about 10 years for the results. I would suggest that the folks who are considering participating in this protest stay home, save gas and go to the website www.energyskeptic.com. They will find a lot of reliable information with regard to energy development. Horst Schreiber, Ohaton CAFCL impressive

My husband and I recently attended a charity auction for the Camrose Association of Community Living. We would like to express how impressed we were with two things. One, the sold out event spoke to the support Camrose extends to the work of this organization. In particular it was wonderful to also see the degree of support from the local business community. Two, we were unfamiliar with this organization. Like many they work with the invisible people of our communities and therefore don’t draw attention like high profile causes. Indeed, the measure of a community is the degree to which they support those who struggle. Thank you Camrose for showing someone from outside the community how it’s done. Two other thoughts about the butterfly metaphor, and turbulent times. First, perhaps it is almost inevitable that, even when our rational minds know that some changes are unstoppable and might even be good for us, other parts of us try to stop the change. Perhaps those resistant parts of us accurately see this as a life and death struggle (the caterpillar will be no more). Second, when an egg first hatches into a caterpillar, everything required to become a butterfly already lives within it. Though some stages (like the eat-everythingin-sight stage) aren’t very attractive and might even be disapproved of (gluttony), all stages are essential to the caterpillar’s destiny as a butterfly. On occasions when I’m feeling somewhat like caterpillar goo, those thoughts are comforting. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

Defending freedom By Arnold Malone

Nov. 11 is a day when each of us should pause and dwell on our good fortune and to give thanks to those who in years gone by made today’s privileges possible. Each year we pause and remember how we got to be the nation we now enjoy. War has changed us. It was Canada’s extraordinary contribution in the First World War that paved our way to nationhood. It was our war effort that focused the world’s attention upon us. In two large battles Canada, a British colony of only 8.7 million citizens, was victorious where larger nations had previously fought and failed. We succeeded at Vimy and Passchendaele and did so at a terrible price. Canada had 10,000 casualties in the battle of Vimy Ridge and 15,600 at Passchendaele. We know the names of past enemies, Stalin, Mussolini, Adolf Hitler and others. Democracy is fragile because there is always an enemy. Even today the enemy lurks amoung us; his name is apathy. Democracy is a concept that requires citizen involvement in nation building. Whenever a significant number of citizens begin to take freedom for granted we dishonour our veterans past and present. Through complacency we risk the freedom that others fought so hard to preserve. The larger colonies of the British empire came into adulthood through their extraordinary contribution in the Great War, First World War. In his book Marching As To War Pierre Burton indicates that it was our Canadian Prime Minister, Sir Robert Borden, a member in England’s Imperial War Cabinet, who stunned onlookers when he grabbed British Prime Minister Lloyd George by the lapels of his frock and shook him after declaring, “If there were ever another Passchendaele not another Canadian soldier would leave our shores.” Others were shocked by Borden’s declaration, but Lloyd George was impressed. After the end of the war Canada, Australia and New Zealand were considered somewhat semi autonomous countries. It was the contribution of the colonies that opened the gate for the process towards our transition to independent nationhood. Sir Borden’s anger was founded on the broadly held view that the British war generals had deployed colony soldiers with too little regard. Our great loss at Passchendaele was to secure a ridge of doubtful importance. We must always be prepared to defend our values and, hopefully, by diplomacy and through example we can retain our values while setting a model for others worldwide. Freedom is not a concept that can be won on a battlefield and once won, be assured for all time. Freedom is a concept that must be fought and re-won each generation, generation after generation. The line in the poem In Flanders Fields, “Take up the quarrel with the foe,” asks us never to forget to build and preserve our democracy; the democracy that once was defended through a terrible cost. From the sacrifice of so many we are now duty bound to be involved. This is not hard. If we show respect for others, are inclusive with those whose views are different, help to make our community better and, at minimum, pocket our gum wrapper rather than tossing it to the street, we are taking part in respecting Canada. We diminish our nation as soon as we assume that our country should provide for us without return. If we forsake the values that the brave men and women who sacrificed so much in assuring our freedom, “they shall not sleep though poppies grow in Flanders fields.” Remembrance Day is a special day for reflecting on the protection provided by our armed forces past and present but also reminds us that working for freedom and democracy is a continuous responsibility, lest we forget.

Sahakarini pipal power By Ruth Eva Jensen

Sahakarini, a Camrose based and led organization, has had a powerful influence, reaching into India, Tanzania, Colombia, Uganda and Kenya. It is truly extraordinary what a small band of committed and caring people can accomplish when they partner with equally committed individuals who covenant to work together for the good of others. That is people power. Sahakarini Loaves and Fishes Dinner was held on Nov. 5 with the theme Pipal Power (Pronounced peeple). In India the pipal tree is strong and heavy and can reach heights of up to 100 feet in just a few years. The pipal tree, abundant in South India, has many health benefits and is considered sacred throughout India. The Pipal Tree Children’s College has been named for this amazing tree as the goal is to make the children strong like the tree - through education and training so that they may be able to support themselves and their families and, in the future, make a contribution to their community and their country. Dr. Siddhartha, the director of Pipal Tree Children’s College, writer, journalist and social activist was the guest speaker for the Loaves and Fishes

Dinner. His articles have appeared in international journals and newspapers and his books have been published in India and abroad. He has been active in social movements in India and he is a former member of the World Social Forum. He coordinated an international network of ecological and cultural journalists called, The Transforming Word. The Pipal Tree Children’s College, this year’s celebrated project, “was created to serve indigenous Adivasi children whose families have been forest dwellers from ancient times. In recent years they have been displaced by mega dams that have flooded their natural habitat and destroyed their way of life as forest dwellers. The Indian government has also declared large tracts of forest as wildlife parks and thereby displacing these indigenous people and forcing them into a life of poverty of self-worth, and poverty brought about by lack of modern skills which have resulted in near destitution for many. Most often parents are forced into a life of itinerant work, often in the coffee and tea plantations far from their native place; accompanying children are removed from school and their already precarious futures in a modern world

are even more deeply compromised,” it was reported in the Camrose Booster, October 2015. “They are straddling the cultures of tribal and modern India and they have little hope of thriving without adequate access to nutritious food, clean water, shelter and education. The program provides shelter, food, medical care, and assistance with school curriculum and supplements the school education with activities rooted in tribal value and modern needs,” from the Sahakarini newsletter, fall 2015. Started in 2011, Children’s College has helped 15 Adivasi boys to complete their high school education. There are currently 22 children (20 girls and two boys) in the Children’s College, all with the desire to attain high school degrees and become tribal leaders with personal depth and imbued with social and ecological awareness. As tribal girl children are vulnerable to gender discrimination and are mostly confined to their tribal villages, Pipal Tree decided to select girls to replace the boys who graduated in the previous year. “It is a great joy to witness the emergence of young leaders from the Adivasi communi,” from the Sahakarini newsletter, fall 2016, Shabin Paul and Veena G. Pai.

Feldberg releases book

By Murray Green

Wetaskiwin author Lori Feldberg likes to tell her stories from a dog’s point of view Her new book Big Bertha and Hercules Mystery: The Case of the Duffle Bag Kids. This time the dog (based on a dog from Camrose) is hooked up with a human partner, a lady private investigator. “The dog tells the reader all kinds of things, so there is humour in it. They are working a case of multiple kidnappings,” revealed Feldberg. The book focuses on junior high school students and all the way up to adults. “It is a very good mystery. The children keep appearing in duffle bags, so that is why the book is named the way it is,” she said. The dog is named Mighty Hercules and the action begins when he is thrown out of his previous owner’s car window and abandoned. “Big Bertha Kowalski, the lady private detective comes across the dog and they become friends,” Feldberg said. “She is an ex-roller derby queen with a bad knee. That is why she

had to give it up and become a private investigator.” The story is based around the EdmontonWe t a s k i w i n - C a m r o s e area, but names have been changed. The local dog is of a Chihuahua and Terrier

cross with big ears and lots of hair. He is a tenacious dog with a nose for chloroform, who enjoys investigating as much as his new master. In the past, Feldberg wrote for elementary students. “The way the dogs interacted with each other was more for younger children. I like the idea of a mystery and a private detective. The theme wasn’t for little children, so I wanted a different challenge,” said Feldberg. “I hope a lot of adults read the book as well.” She will have the books for sale at the Camrose and District Farmers’ Market on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings starting on Nov. 3. Feldberg began writing horse and dog stories at an early age, and is perfecting her skills in genres like mystery, western, romance, and even fantasy, along with true adventure and newspaper articles. She has been published in many periodicals, magazines, and book anthologies like Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christmas in Canada, and Summit Studios’ collection of humourous animal stories, Mob Hit on My Grandmother’s Dog. She is currently working on a sequel to this book.

Roots Society honours milestone with Lund country concert By Murray Green

FREE POPCORN!

in the Norsemen Inn

Two big milestones will be honoured on Nov. 15. It is the 10th anniversary of the Rose City Roots Music Society and the fifth anniversary of the Bailey Theatre. Canadian roots-country singer/songwriter Corb Lund will be performing at the Bailey Theatre at 8 p.m. as a thank you to music fans in Camrose. Lund’s third album Five Dollar Bill (2002), established him as a favorite in the industry. Prior to his mainstream breakthrough, he was a member of the Smalls, a punk rock band from Edmonton that never attained commercial success, but was a regional favorite during the 1990s. Born in Alberta, where he grew up on his family’s farm near Taber, Lund moved to Edmonton to study music at Grant MacEwan Community College. In 1990, he co-founded the Smalls with a few college friends in addition to Lund on bass, the band made its full-length debut in 1990. Lund founded the Corb Lund Band with Kurt Ciesla on bass and Ryan Vikedal on drums with Lund on vocals and guitar. Initially considered a roots country side project, the band released two albums, Modern Pain (1995) and Unforgiving Mistress (1999), while Lund was still active in the Smalls.

After the breakup of the Smalls in 2001, the Corb Lund Band became a fulltime endeavor. The band traveled to Nashville to work with producer Harry Stinson on its third album that reached gold sales certification in Canada. Lund collaborated with Stinson again on his next album, Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer (2005), a similarly successful effort that was awarded Album of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association in 2006. The follow-up albums Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! (2007)and Losin’ Lately Gambler (2009), were also produced by Stinson. Following Live at the Edmonton Coliseum, also released in 2009, Lund issued Cabin Fever, which was recorded in a cabin he built north of Edmonton. In the summer of 2014, Counterfeit Blues featured newly recorded versions of songs from Lund’s catalog, but with a twist: he and his road band cut them live from the floor of Memphis’ Sun Studios, with no overdubs. Lund returned to recording new material with Things That Can’t Be Undone. The 10-song set was previewed by opening track “Weight of a Gun” as an Internet single. The concert is expected to be a sell-out.

The Big Valley Jamboree will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next summer from Aug. 3 to 6. Headlining the milestone will be Keith Urban, who last performed at BVJ in 2010. After 25 years of hosting the brightest stars in country music and partying, organizers are taking everything they have learned to make a number of improvements to the festival for fans. Urban is planning a Ripcord World Tour 2017 after his 2016 release of his eighth studio album, RIPCORD, which has already produced three No. 1 singles – the Grammy nominated “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16,” “Break On Me” and “Wasted Time,” which stayed atop the charts for two weeks and became Urban’s 21st number one record. RIPCORD’s fourth single, “Blue Ain’t Your Color” is on country radio and headed towards yet another top position. Urban continues to add to his career CMA awards nominations, garnering four for the Nov. 2 event including Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year. Another headliner will be Jason Aldean, who last appeared at BVJ in 2011. Whether he arrives on a night train, or the back of a big green tractor, Jason Aldean is sure to get the party going when the lights come on at the BVJ main stage. He recently released the album They Don’t Know and Jason is just getting started when it comes to showing off his newest material. With over a decade at the top of charts, his relentless artistry con-

tinues to earn him awards and accolades including ACM, CMT, CMA and Billboard music awards. Two other performers were announced in time for the ticket launch. Kacey Musgraves is a multitalented, Texas born singer-songwriter who plays the guitar, mandolin and harmonica. She is currently touring in Canada and the USA. In 2013, she received two Grammy awards for her album Same Trailer Different Park and the single “Merry Go ‘Round.” Her 2015 album Pageant Material debuted at number one on the Billboard country charts. CMA Musical Event of the Year nominee Chris Young has been celebrating the chart topping success of his duet with Cassadee Pope. “Think of You” is a gold certified single making it Chris’s eighth single to hit the top of the charts. To improve the BVJ experience for music fans, the focus in the next months is on how to improve the audio and video coverage in the main concert bowl. Adapting to erratic Albertan weather can be tough. Before BVJ starts a concert will be held on April 29, 2017. We know the artist, but we don’t know the location. Small Town Saturday Night is back and this year Gord Bamford will be putting on a very personal show for the winning town. Details on how to enter and win a once-in-a-lifetime concert for your small town will be coming soon. To order tickets to BVJ visit www.BigValleyJamboree.com or call 1-888404-1234. Tickets and camping sites went on sale.

Jake’s Gift shares a story of Remembrance By Murray Green

Jake’s Gift is a multiaward winning play about a Canadian Second World War veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Jake’s Gift is one of the most moving events of the year at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. A special showing for students will be held at 1:30 p.m. “I perform solo using four different characters. It is about a Canadian veteran who travels back to Normandy to find his brother’s grave. He doesn’t like to talk about the war and it is a hard decision to go back,” explained actress Julia Mackey. “I wanted this to be like a love letter to all of our veterans.” While revisiting the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts–most notably the wartime death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. “The story is about the unexpected friendship between Jake and the little girl. It is a story about friendship and forgiveness,” said Julia. “I started writing about three brothers from the prairies. Although the brothers’ names were made up, the events and feelings were based on real veterans during interviews I conducted back in 2004.” At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. “I didn’t expect to do this as a solo, but I had such a strong sense for all of the characters that I could perform them all,” said Julia. She hopes to hit 1,000 performances by next year’s Remembrance Day. “I wanted to share this story with as many veterans as possible.

I was watching a documentary about the war with my father in Grade 7 and it was the first time I had seen images of war. I was absolutely horrified by it, but it made me fully understand what Remembrance Day was about. I had it in my mind to write something to pay tribute to all of the veterans.” The local army and air cadets are encouraged to be part of the audience as well. Camrose organizer Adrian Zinck is encouraging the community to support the local Legion and view the moving story. “We wanted to host this play two years ago, but the new Legion Hall was too small for an event like this. Then this year the Performing Arts Centre approached us to help them. We just didn’t have the means to host a production of this size,” he explained. “When the opportunity came again we were thinking about it when the Lougheed Centre asked if we would co-sponsor the event.” The Lougheed Centre agreed to host the event, look after ticket sales and promotional materials. The Legion agreed to get as many members out as possible to honour them during the show. “It is a well-received play. Ragnar Gislason, our service officer, has been to the show twice and loved it very much,” added Adrian, the Legion entertainment chairman. “All of veterans will be in uniform and meet people in the lobby before the play. Once everyone is seated they will be marched in by the Sargent of Arms,” said Adrian. Legion members will receive a discount on tickets. “We are not doing this so much as a fundraiser for ourselves, but rather to get people involved and engaged. We want to show a presence in the community and get more people coming to the Legion,” he said. “We partnered with the Bailey Theatre last year with the Big Band and it was well received. We hope everyone will support this show as well.” Camrose will be holding Remembrance Day ceremo-

nies at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on Nov. 11 beginning at 11 a.m. “We are fortunate to have this play only six days after Remembrance Day, so it is fresh on everyone’s mind,” said Adrian. Since 2007, Jake’s Gift has gone on to play at festivals and theatres in 220 communities across Canada, as well as international visits to Washington State, the UK and to Normandy, France, for the 70th anniversary of D-Day in June 2014. The 2016-17 season marks the start of their 10th year of touring, and Juno Productions and Jake’s Gift continue to garner awards and rave reviews whether playing in small rural towns or big city centres. Playwright and performer Julia Mackey was born in Birmingham, England. Her family moved to Canada when she was three years old. She grew up in Montreal and received an education degree from McGill University before heading out west in 1993 to pursue a career in Theatre. In 1994, she started writing and performing her own work with the innovative Victoria based company, Theatre SKAM. In June 2004, Julia travelled to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. She attended many ceremonies, walked the coastline and interviewed dozens of veterans who had returned for the occasion. The experiences of the vet-

erans, her own discoveries, and a life long interest in Remembrance Day, led to the development of the play in August of 2006 at The Sunset Theatre in Wells, BC. In August 2012, Julia received a Betty Mitchell Calgary Theatre Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama. Jake’s Gift was also nominated for Outstanding Production. Director and stage manager Dirk Van Stralen uses no backdrops for the show, only raw emotion and storytelling. “We will be donating a plaque to the Camrose

branch of the Royal Canadian Legion as well as 100 per cent of the profits of the sale of buttons,” said Julia. “The Fallen Hero print was commissioned by Mark Norman founder of the Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation.” To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive. ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances. If you can’t attend the evening show, ask about joining the afternoon performance.

The Legion will be presented with funds from button sales.

The Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) once again wishes to celebrate Family Doctor Week in Canada (Nov. 7 to 12). This is the 13th annual Family Doctor Week in Canada– acknowledging the outstanding contributions of Canadian family doctors for their dedication to their patients and the delivery of highquality health care. As many of you know a fundamental part of the Camrose PCN’s vision is to support family doctors in delivering coordinated, qual-

ity rural primary care with the support of other health providers. Over the past eight years the PCN has worked with family doctors in a variety of settings in the communities of Camrose, Bashaw, Daysland, Forestburg, Hardisty and Tofield. We are very proud of the local PCN programming that has been developed - dedicated to patients and patient care. We know the importance of a positive relationship between patients and their family doctors. A family doctor is an important part of the patient’s health home, their own network of their family doctor, health care providers and community organizations all working together in providing the best possible primary care. During Family Doctor week, the Camrose PCN will be conducting a Primary Care and You Survey, which asks individuals to tell us about their relationship with their family doctor as well as their experience with their family doctor’s office and the Camrose PCN. The information we

received from survey participants will provide good insight into how people understand what Primary Care is and how it is being accessed in our community. To access the survey, visit www.camrosepcn.com or drop by your family doctor’s office. In appreciation to those that fill out the short survey, there will be a draw for an iPad mini. On behalf of the PCN, I want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the PCN board of directors, which includes Dr. Nichol, Dr. Bredesen, Dr. Pasha, Dr. Niemann and Dr. Letley as well as all the PCN family doctors for all they do. I encourage you to celebrate Family Doctor week by taking a moment to acknowledge and thank your family doctor. A listing of all our Camrose PCN family doctors can be found at www.camrosepcn.com. Ford Flex family wagon Always arrive in style By Murray Green

The Ford Flex has a style of its own with standard bright dual exhaust tips, five available wheel choices, distinctive bodyside grooves, available two-tone roof colour combinations, chrome grille (satinaluminum grille on limited edition) with integrated headlights and available satin-aluminum liftgate. Put some Flex into your life by viewing this vehicle at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose. “The Flex is as close as it gets these days to an oldschool station wagon—and that’s actually refreshing in a world of SUV wannabes,” said Lamb Ford Sales consultant Tony Loberg. “Big seats comfortably seat seven, with room for all your gear.” The base V-6 makes 287 hp, while a twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 produces 365. The limited offers the option of a turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 for 350 lb-ft that is all-wheel drive only. Both engines send their power through a six-speed automatic. A six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard. The 365-hp version is flat-out fast. The Flex comes in three trim levels: SE, SEL and Limited. “From its stylish and bold exterior to its spacious and

Tony Loberg Sales Associate

comfortable interior, Ford Flex is distinctively different. Inside, you have your pick of available features, including colours, wood finishes and leather-trimmed seating,” added Loberg. “An available multipanel vista roof provides natural light for passengers in all three rows, while available ambient lighting provides a choice of seven interior colours. On the outside, style is the dominant theme. The available appearance package, wheel choices and two-tone vehicle options let you equip Flex to your taste.” Neither a high-riding wannabe SUV nor a traditional

carheight station wagon, the Flex still offers distinctive, unabashedly squared-off style and a useful, reconfigurable three-row cabin. Most people look at the Flex and probably think, rightly so, that it’s some sort of retro-modern take on the station wagons that roamed the highways. The Flex’s positive attributes haven’t changed since it was introduced in 2008 (and only improved with its major updates back in 2013).

Tony Loberg Sales Associate

Ford refreshed the Flex with a new front and added a touchscreen infotainment system with capacitive-touch dashboard controls and a pair of displays in the gauge cluster. Those basic elements carry over with one key exception. Ford’s latest Sync 3 setup, is easier to use and more responsive to inputs. As a vehicle moving your family to events, the Flex shines. The relatively low ride height makes it easy for little (or aged) ones to climb aboard

a n d loading stuff into the Flex’s cargo hold is a snap. Fold down two rows of seats and there’s 83 cubic feet of deliciously cubic cargo space. Even with the third-row seats in use, there’s much-better-than-average luggage space thanks to a deep well behind the seats. The second-row captain’s chairs are comfortable and are spaced apart in such a way as to leave a reasonably sized pass-through aisle to the two rear most seats (a three-person second-row bench also is available). You can flip either second-row seat forward for access to the back, but it’s not necessary. The third-row chairs, by the way, are best suited for younger passengers. Two old looks are featured in the Flex. The liftgate under the rear windshield is reminiscent of an old woodie. Further helped by the grooved door panels, not only are these great design features on their own but they smartly fit the language of the rest of the car. The other element that really completes the car’s looks are the Limited trim’s headlights. SE and SEL Flexes get halogen lamps unbefitting to a car of this price. You can see the Ford Flex at Lamb Ford Sales on Highway 13 East Camrose. Phone 780672-2411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Recent announcements include The Climate Change Emissions Management Fund, which is providing $10 million to expand four energy efficiency programs to a total of $15.8 million. Additionally the cost share has increased to 30 per cent producer, 70 per cent government, which will allow larger cost projects to be undertaken. The four programs that these grant funds will go to are: On-Farm Energy Management, which looks at power consumption conservation for agriculture operations, increases the percentage of capital purchases to 70 per cent from the current 30 per cent and increases the cap on funding to $750,000 (up from $50,000). Such things as lighting, pumps, meters, boilers, heaters and low-energy livestock-watering fountains. On-Farm Solar Photovoltaics, which supports using solar panels to reduce energy costs as well as the ability to share any excess power to the Alberta power grid. Irrigation Efficiency, which helps producers invest in new or upgrade low pressure centre pivot irrigation equipment to improve the efficiency of energy and water use on Alberta farms. There will be an increase in the number of eligible projects by an applicant and increases in the funding cap to $15,000 from $5,000 for specific types of projects. Accelerating Agricultural Innovation Program which assists in the proof of concept and commercialization of new products, new processes or new business practices as well as with the early adoption of new techniques or practices that have the potential for sector-wide impact. All revenue from the carbon levy will be reinvested into Alberta’s economy creating jobs, diversifying our economy and fighting climate change. The carbon levy will not apply to the use of marked gasoline and diesel by farmers for farming purposes. After the carbon levy is introduced in 2017, Alberta will have the third-lowest provincial fuel taxes/levies of any Canadian jurisdiction. Carbon rebates will make sure lower- and middleincome individuals and families will not have trouble making ends meet. Sixty per cent of Alberta households will receive the full amount of the rebate, which is based on the average costs of the carbon levy according to family size and income level. The Climate Leadership Plan cuts Alberta’s small business tax rate by one-third making Alberta’s tax advantage for small business owners one of the most competitive tax jurisdictions in Canada. It is interesting to note that when these programs were announced in February 2016, in two weeks the solar panel program was fully subscribed. It is anticipated that this expanded program will also be fully subscribed before the end of the fiscal year. Some exciting news for 2017; you may have heard about our new “Energy Efficiency Alberta” program. It will promote and support energy efficiency and community energy systems (including micro-generation and small-scale generation) for homes, businesses and communities. Three specific programs which will come into effect during 2017 include: Direct Install Residential Program will offer direct, no-charge installation of low-energy efficiency products to residences, such as lighting, water and heating components. Residential Consumer Products Program will offer point of sale rebates to residential customers at retail outlets with products such as lighting, insulation and appliances. Business, Non-Profit and Institutional Rebate Program will offer incentives for high-efficiency products and installation of electric and gas based products as lighting, heating and cooling systems and hot water systems. The chair and board of directors of Energy Efficiency Alberta are: David Dodge (chair), Vittoria Bellissimo, Joseph Jobin, Peter Love, Helen Rice and Kyla Sandwith. If you or anyone you know might be interested in learning more about these programs for Alberta’s agricultural sector, go to http://www.growingforward.alberta. ca or call 310–Farm (3276). Some more Municipality Sustainability Initiative (MSI) grants for our constituency include $10,000 for the Rosenroll Cemetery Upgrades at Bittern Lake. For more information please check the Alberta Government web pages or call my offices to talk to Niel or Tony at either 780-672-0000 or 780-352-0241.

Minister of finance offers federal update By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

This week in Ottawa, the minister of finance presented an update on the economy and the Liberal government’s finances for the next five years. The government downgraded forecasts for GDP growth (from 1.4 to 1.2 per cent in 2016 and 2.2 to two per cent in 2017) and unveiled new spending and policy initiatives related to infrastructure, immigration programs and foreign investment attraction. Since before the election, the Conservative Party has insisted that in the current fragile global economy now is not the time to plunge Canada into deficit and debt. The risks are too high. The initial Liberal economic plan has failed and Canadians are already paying for it. This past week, the Parliamentary Budget officer reported that since the Prime Minister was elected, the economy hasn’t created a single additional full time job. The economic statement unveiled the Liberals’ ‘Plan B’ which is to borrow an extra $32 billion with no reason to believe we will get better results. There is no plan to eventually balance the budget even though the Liberals promised to do that, by the next election. Economists and financial watchdogs including from TD Bank and BMO, have publicly called on the government to halt any additional spending. Soon, the Liberals will impose a job killing CPP tax hike on all workers and employers even though internal documents from Finance Canada show that the finance minister was warned that higher CPP premiums will reduce job growth until 2035. The Liberals are also launching a national carbon tax on everything that will cost families thousands of dollars every year. Our local agriculture sector and anyone who heats their home, drives a car or truck will be hit hard in the pocketbook. New rules on mortgages are already making it significantly harder, or impossible for Canadians to buy a home (especially young folks just starting out and hoping to raise a family). Families are experiencing the loss of the family tax credits for sports and arts classes and more. Firms are missing the small business tax cuts the Liberals cancelled. As the chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, I was pleased to see that the 2016 Public Accounts of Canada, the annual three-volume document that reports the expenditure totals for the Government of Canada, reported that the previous Conservative government did in fact achieve a budgetary surplus of $1.9 billion in 2014-15. As the former Minister of State (Finance) my job was to help the late Jim Flaherty and his successor Joe Oliver reach that balanced budget goal. The Public Accounts reveal that in 2015-16 there was a $1 billion deficit. Canada was on course for surpluses in the following years. Further, the Public Accounts states that just under ten cents of every dollar of government revenue is being spent on interest payments to service the accumulated national debt in the current ‘lowinterest’ economy. The Economic Statement by the Liberals points to annual budgetary deficits for the next five years at least. Liederabend art song recital Submitted

Camrose and area residents are invited to join us in what has become the Augustana Voice Students’ annual fall recital of art song including compositions by Schubert, R. Schumann, Wolf, Brahms, and Strauss. You may be wondering what a Liederabend is. Liederabend dates back to the 1800s, when musicians and lovers of music would gather

for the evening at someone’s home, and one or more singers would perform the songs of composers of the day. In the field of classical music, these songs are referred to today as “art songs”, and the German art songs are called “Lieder.” You are welcome to a musical event that celebrates German Art Song. Step back in time and enjoy the Augustana vocal division’s presentation of “Lieder” on Wednes-

day, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Augustana Chapel. Augustana vocal students from the studio of Harold Wiens: Shaley Bain, Alexandra Brigley, April Heinrich, Carrie-Ann Hubbard, Hilda Lam, Deanna Robillard, Chantel Schultz, Eric Skretting and Gracie Yelland will each perform with pianist Dr. Roger Admiral. For ticket and other information, contact the Augustana Fine Arts office at 780-679-1532.

March 16, 1934 ~ October 28, 2016 Merle Allan Pederson, second son of Orvil and Inga Pederson of the Armena District, was born on March 16, 1934. He was raised in a family of five boys and one girl. He started school in Lake Demay, went on to Svea School and completed grade 10 in New Norway. While in New Norway, Merle lived with his Uncle and Aunt (Marvin and Betty Johnson) and worked on their farm. He had many fond memories of living on the farm, including walking with his cousins down the lane to meet the school bus. Merle enjoyed the farm life. He was first and foremost a farmer and, at the age of 16, he and his older brother Harvey began a mixed farming operation in the Lake Demay District. They lived in an old farm house with plenty of mice. Merle’s first job was with Ferris Motors and then Phil Link’s Esso Station. He also volunteered with Camrose Fire Department as a firefighter. It was during this time that he met and fell in love with his future bride Lois Wiley of Saltcoats, Saskatchewan. On the cold day of November 7, 1956, Merle and Lois were married in the United Church in Saltcoats. They first lived in Camrose and then, after the passing of Merle’s older brother Harvey, Merle and Lois moved to the farm to continue with the farming operation. In 1965, Merle began employment at Byers Flour Mill. He was well suited to this job as he was a farmer and a real “people person”. While there, he got to know many of the farmers in the Camrose and outlying areas, and was on a first name basis with each one. (It was rare for Merle not to know someone when he was out running errands or out for coffee). He enjoyed family meals. On most Sundays after church, the Pederson family would get together for food, fun and fellowship. Later in the evening at home, Merle would head into the kitchen for his weekly pancake supper. (The grandchildren all remember making pancakes with Grandpa.) Every year, he would gather up Lois and the kids, and head out to Saltcoats for a visit with Lois’s family, with stops in Saskatoon to visit his brother Ralph. Merle enjoyed community picnics, ball games, wiener roasts, steak fries and birthday parties. He most enjoyed spending time with neighbours and good friends. On October 28, 2016, at St Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, Dad passed away with his wife of 60 years at his side. He leaves behind his loving wife Lois; his sons Darryl (Corry Lockhart) Pederson of Cochrane, and Randall (Donna) Pederson of Camrose; and his daughter Dianne (Gerry) Vandenberg of Camrose. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Adrianna, Ries, Kailen, Lyndon and Jordan, and Randy, Justice and Hope (Carrie-Lee), Kathryn and Kendra. He also leaves behind his sister Marjorie (Lloyd) Grove of Camrose; brothers Ralph (Jackie) of Saskatoon and Wayne (Carmen) of Leduc; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Merle was predeceased by his parents Orvil and Inga; his infant brother Henry; and brothers Harvey and Lyle. Merle was a loving and faithful Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Brother-in-Law, and he will be deeply missed. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2016 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Calvin Skriver officiating. Inurnment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Hospice Society of Camrose and District, St. Mary’s Hospital or to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Bandits steal two points from Kodiaks By Murray Green

For the third time this season, the Camrose Kodiaks have lost two straight games. The Brooks Bandits came out with guns blazing on Halloween night to build up a 3-1 lead after the opening period and went on to win 5-3 in the EnCana Arena. Kyler Kupka started the Camrose scoring with a power play marker after the Bandits had a 2-0 edge. Brooks made it 4-1 in the second before Estian Coetzee and Ryan Hartman closed the gap with single tallies. In the third frame, Brooks netted the only marker. Goalie Patrick Gora kept the Kodiaks in the game in the first two periods when he was faced with 27 shots. He stopped 30 of 35 shots in the contest. Camrose fired 28 at the Bandits. The Calgary Canucks also jumped on the Kodiaks early and were up 2-0 after the first period and hung on to win 5-2 on Oct. 29. Camrose tied the game in the second when Alex Mowbray and Mackenzie Bauer scored. However, three goals in a row by Calgary took the steam out of the sails of the Camrose attack. Goalie Joey May turned away 27 of 32 shots for the Kodiaks. Camrose recorded 34 shots on Calgary. Camrose snuffed out the Drumheller Dragons 4-1 the night before. This time the Kodiaks netted the first three goals to take command of the game. Coetzee led the offence with two goals, while Bauer and Cooper Johnson added single markers. Gora stopped 28 of 29 shots between the pipes. Camrose directed 27 shots at the Drumheller cage. Bear facts The Kodiaks host the Grande Prairie Storm on Nov. 12 before going on a road trip to play the Calgary Mustangs and the Drumheller Dragons. They return for a home game on Nov. 22 to take on the Okotoks Oilers. All games have 7 p.m. start times.

CCHS Trojans finish against Sabres squad By Murray Green

The Camrose Composite High School football Trojans ended its season with a playoff game against the Wetaskiwin Sabres on Friday, Nov. 4. The Trojans lost 39-7 to the two-time league champion Sylvan Lake Lakers in the first round of the playoffs and were sent to the B side of the playoffs in a onegame playoff. Camrose beat Ponoka 28-14 late in the season. Against Ponoka, CCHS came out strong in the first quarter and Nick Ioanidis found the end zone early and Terryll Sherman added a convert to go up 7-0. “Quarterback Griffon Lorenz dropped back to pass four minutes later, but the Broncs had everyone covered, so he took off for a 58 yard touchdown run. Sherman added the convert to put the Trojans up by 14 points,” explained Trojans coach Adam Belanger. The kicker missed a long field goal late in the first quarter. The Broncs produced a sustained drive, but the Trojan defence stiffened to keep Ponoka off the scoreboard. It was back and forth in the middle of the field for most of the second quarter until Ioanidis broke free on a 52 yard touchdown run before the first half ended. Sherman added his third convert of the night. The third quarter remained scoreless, but Ioanidis found the end zone for his third touchdown of the night early in the fourth to put the Trojans ahead 28-0 with Sherman’s convert going through the uprights. The Trojans were in command of the game late in the fourth when Terryll Sherman, in at quarterback, was intercepted on a great break on the ball and the Bronc defender ran it in for their first touchdown of the night with 1:47 left in the game. Camrose fumbled the ball on their next offensive play and Ponoka punched in their second touchdown a few plays later. “The Trojans finished the game with their best rushing performance of the year with a total of 382 yards on the ground. The offensive line deserves much of the credit, they did a great job opening holes for our running backs,” added coach Belanger. “First year player Jonny Either stepped in at centre early in the third quarter and held up the line very well in his first action at the centre.” Ioanidis gained 213 yards along the ground on 20 carries scored three touchdowns. Lorenz added 95 yards on six carries and a touchdown.

FAMILY RUN

Mom Susan Brosius joined her daughter Emily Brosius on Sept. 30 in the Terry Fox Run held at Jack Stuart School. The duo set a goal to walk/run four kilometres, which they achieved. The run was especially touching to them because they lost a dear friend to cancer one month prior to the run. They were honoured to participate in the Terry Fox Run for those lost to cancer and said it was an amazing experience.
