Just prior to Tenore presents Christmas With You Christmas last year, Tenore brought down the house at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Comments following last year’s concert were so numerous and positive that the trio of vibrant tenors – Mark David Williams, David Wise and Jason Catron – were booked for a return trip to Camrose one year later. Tenore will present an exciting and magical Christmas show on

Saturday, December 17th at 8 p.m. This year, however, a new and very local element will enhance the musical delights from Tenore’s Christmas album with additional fan favourite songs. Sangkor Women’s Ensemble from the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta will be singing background vocals and complementing the full and rich voices of the world-famous, award-winning tenors.

Budget approves pool expansion and renovation By Lori Larsen T he hopes for a new swimming pool in Camrose is now a reality. City council’s approval of the capital budget for 2017-18 included$12 million for an attached competition style lane pool and renovation to the existing recreation pool. City of Camrose general manager for community services Ryan Poole explained what the project will entail.”There is $1 mil-

lion in the budget for 2017 which will be used for the design work. “That involves a very detailed design right down to every nut and bolt, pipe, heating, ventilation, everything. “The remaining $11 million will be used in 2018-19 to do a substantial renovation and retro-fit of the existing pool and then a fairly major expansion,” added Poole. The exact details of the expansion still need

to be determined and will involve consultation with the design company and community user groups such as the Camrose Swim Club, Camrose Tsunami Junior Lifeguard Club, Camrose Cygnets Synchronized Swim Club and other aqua programs. “We are leaning towards expanding and improving on a specific area for lane swimming and a specific area for recreational swimming,” said Poole.

Submitted The above is a rendering depicting what the new swimming pool expansion may look like.

Although the precise details on the two areas are not yet finalized Poole suggested it won’t be a separate building, per se. “The two buildings will be attached. We are planning on taking down the wall at the west end of the existing pool then have two buildings side by side. “People will be able to go from one pool to the other. From inside it will feel like it’s all one even though from the outside it may look like two buildings with an attachment between them.” Poole stated the proposed location of the expansion will be straight west of the existing swimming pool but will not affect the ball diamonds at all. “It will, however likely affect the existing spray park,” mentioned Poole. “We are planning, within the budget, to move and rebuild the spray park and include some new features. Our hopes are to move the spray park just south of its existing location if we have to move it at all.” Poole commented on the goals of the city regarding the new additional pool. “We have heard from the swim club that one of their goals is to be able to build it(the new pool) to

the right depth, the right length and have enough lanes to be able to host competitions. “As for the existing pool there will be some significant renovations to not only improve the esthetics but also to improve spacing and ergonomics. We hope to open things up and make it feel more welcome and spacious. “We are hoping to include some new play features as well. “It will likely be converted into more of a recreational pool. It won’t be used for lane swimming if all goes to plan, it will be used more for splash and play and teaching children lessons.” The vision for the new pool is extensive and exciting however large projects such as these do not happen in a few months. “This entire project will likely take from 2017 to sometime in 2019 before it will open.” Poole remarked that during that time it is more than likely at some point the pool will have to be closed but the goal is to ensure as little interruption to service as possible.

Free community dinner embodies the spirit of giving By Lori Larsen

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The 10th annual Charity Checkstop held on Dec. 3 saw a continuous stream of traffic driving through to hand over donations to volunteers from Camrose Police Service, Camrose RCMP, Camrose Victims Services and others. Donations were made to Camrose Neighbor Aid Center (food bank), Camrose Victims Services and Kinette Club Silent Santa.

Checkstop success thanks to generosity By Lori Larsen The Camrose Charity Checkstop was obviously one that residents had no problem stopping for and handing over the goods. The beautiful weather, dedication of volunteers and the kindness of Camrose and area residents made this year’s Charity Checkstop, held on Dec. 3 a huge success. “There is no recession evident when it comes to the generosity of Camrosians,” said Camrose Police Service constable Kelly Bauer. The initiative raised more than $9,512 for the Victims Services Unit, 4,255 pounds of food and $2,159 cash and gift cards for Camrose Neighbor Aid Center (food bank) and 1,490 toys and $750 cash plus gift cards for Kinette Silent Santa.

For many people this time of year brings about opportunities to come together with family, friends and fellow members of the community and share food, laughter, conversation and joy. The Camrose Church of God would like to invite members of the community to come together at the fourth annual Community Christmas Dinner held on Dec. 17. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. and dinner will be served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. “This is a free community dinner put on by the community,” said coordinator Steve Mitts. “It is open to anyone who is alone at Christmas, those who are having a hard time financially or those who would just love to have a good meal served by people who really care, in a warm family environment.” Since the Community Christmas Dinner began in 2013 the number of people attending and subsequently volunteering has grown substantially. “The first dinner event we served 75 and last year we served over 250,” remarked Mitts. “We are expecting close to 300 this year.” Mitts was delighted at the response from the community both as attendees

and volunteers. “With more people attending, which we are happy to see, it will take more people to put it on. We will need more volunteers and more food donations.” This event is more than just a meal; it is an entire experience of enjoying music, conversation with friends and family, meeting new people from the community and celebrating the joy of the season with others. “Throughout the evening we are going to have live music playing in the auditorium and a professional DJ who is going to be playing Christmas and instrumental music throughout the dinner,” added Mitts. Attendees are encouraged to come and enjoy the entire experience. Listen to music while waiting for a table in the dining room and take an opportunity to share with fellow community members. The Church of God will be taking flyers and invitations to Camrose Open Door, Camrose Women’s Shelter, Augustana Campus for the University of Alberta, Camrose Neighbor Aid Center and food bank, Martha’s Table, Camrose Association for Community Living and other churches. Various organizations

and individuals throughout the community have already come forward with donations of food, money (used towards the purchase of various items used for the event) and the offering of their time to help make this event happen. Coordinators of the event welcome any businesses or individuals to volunteer their skills or time to help with the event in areas such as the kitchen, dining room or for set-up and take down. “We want it to be a very relaxed family setting. People can come early, enjoy a cup of coffee and listen to the live music. Anyone willing and able to volunteer with the community Christmas dinner or wishing to make a donation can contact either Steve Mitts at 780781-5019 or Theo Stad at 780-231-8982.

Beware of fraud note

Recognize someone for excellence in customer service

By Lori Larsen

Residents need to be aware of another scam that is hitting Camrose. The latest scam involves letters being received through the mail from someone identifying themselves as an accountant trying to locate family members in order to claim a deceased client’s inheritance. The con artist (accountant) uses a story claiming he/she is an ancestry specialist and was hired to determine if the victim (person receiving the letter) is related to the deceased and therefore a claimant to the £4.5 million (British pounds). The con artist states he/she does not want to see the funds unclaimed and confiscated by the government and therefore needs the victim (recipient) to help by contacting the con artist (accountant) and supplying contact information. Be wary of any type of communication you receive from parties unknown and never release personal information to anyone you do not know. If you think you have been the victim of a fraud contact the Canadian AntiFraud Centre at 1-888-4958501 or visit the website at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

Tenore performs with Sangkor By Murray Green

Tenore is back in Camrose, due to popular demand. This year the Christmas show on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre will receive assistance from Augustana’s women’s choir, Sangkor. “Singing with Tenore allows us to be a part of something that is bigger than just ourselves. We get to sing with their large, orchestral background and their full rich voices. We become a part of creating that ambiance,” said Sangkor member Carolyn Olson. Most children know Tenore’s music by watching a Christmas movie on television. Back in 2012 Tenore traveled to Uganda to

join the Watoto Childrens Choir to record the smash hit “Where are you Christmas” from the movie, The Grinch who stole Christmas. Tenore, which evolved from the Canadian Tenors, will share the group’s Christmas With You show and feature Sangkor. “Being encouraged by Tenore to share something we love to do gives us the opportunity to fulfill one of our dreams: sharing a portion of ourselves with our own community through the beauty of music,” added Christine Heyhurst of Sangkor. “Last June at Jaywalker’s, I was talking to Nick from the Performing Arts Centre and I noticed from the advertisements that Tenore was performing a Christmas concert again

this year. I looked closer and to my surprise I saw that Sangkor: Augustana’s Women’s Chorus, was going to join them. I couldn’t believe it! Nick told me that Tenore likes to have a local choral group sing with them in their concerts and he arranged for Sangkor to participate in this Christmas concert. What an honour and thrill it is for us to be on stage with this world renown vocal group, which is always a Christmas favourite, right here in Camrose. Those of us in Sangkor are very excited to be a part of this performance,” added Barb Lentz. “The opportunity arose to come around Christmas time and it was a wonderful experience,” said Tenore member Jason Catron. “It is a first class facility and the staff were first class as well. We are excited to be going back to Camrose.” Tenore consists of three vibrant tenors in Mark David Williams, David Wise and Catron. They also have a couple of swing members who fill in when a regular member is unavailable. “It’s like being married to several people. You have to blend harmonies with several people and often practice without all of the group. Mark and I went to college together and are friends, so it is easy for us to get together, but David has now moved to Nashville. Often we get into a place a day or two early and practice before we start a tour. It takes dedication from each member to be ready for a tour without a lot of group practices. We were professionals before we came to Tenore, so we know what it takes to prepare for a tour.” Tenore likes to have fun and that comes through on stage. “We became friends first and then sing together. We have a nice mixture and blend of harmonies and that’s what people experience when they come to our concerts,” he said. The group was brought to the forefront of traditional and gospel music with great harmonies. They have added an exciting and magical Christmas show that will entertain a wide range of audience. “We get so excited to perform Christmas shows. It just adds to the holiday spirit when the audience

We think of what and who is the most important at this time of year.” Tenore will pass on the spirit of Christmas with a beautiful collection at this special time of year. “Music takes us to places we remember and love. We look forward to this time every year,” he said. “We

want everyone to come out and enjoy our songs. You won’t be disappointed.” In their short time together, Tenore has received tremendous acclaim. Nominated for awards in an incredible seven categories at the GMA Covenant Awards, Tenore walked away with three plaques, including the Fan Choice of the Year Award. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Christmas treats

Every time I walk past a commercial Christmas cake in a grocery store, I flash back to “Christmas cake making day” when I was a child. Every year that I remember, on a Saturday in November, we had Christmas cake making day. It was an all-day production. Kids helped prepare the dried fruit–rinsing it and setting it out to air until it was completely dry. There were conversations about the balance of raisins and currants, and how much peel. Bigger kids helped prepare the pans. As I recall, the special pans were greased, then lined with brown paper and then maybe the paper was greased too. Grown-ups were solely in charge of making the dark batter, mixing in the dry fruit, and filling the prepared pans. Only grown-ups were allowed to test whether the cakes were done. Then the cakes were packed away in a cool dark basement corner to deepen the flavours. One magical day in December (only our mother knew which day the cakes were deemed to be ready), we’d bring the cakes upstairs, take apart the tins, peel off the paper, and congratulate ourselves for how wonderful they were. *** When I see commercial Christmas cake in a grocery store, my flashback memories make me smile, but that doesn’t motivate me to go to all that work myself! In fact, I can’t remember the last time I did any home baking at all–except an annual Christmas cookie baking day with my daughter and eldest (now adult) granddaughter. Christmas cookie baking day began when my children were small. As they grew up and left home and grandchildren began to arrive, my daughter and I continued the tradition. We’re now joined by her daughter and every year I look forward to our three-generation Christmas cookie baking day. One of the delights for me (though I’m not sure it lights up my daughter and granddaughter) is that we’re still using my grandmother’s shortbread cookie recipe, passed on to me by my mother. My grandmother died long before my granddaughter was born, but I love the sense of continuity of a five-generation recipe. *** For the past several years, our baking day has happened in my granddaughter’s kitchen. It takes a bit of organizing for three people living a several-hours drive apart to make sure we have all the ingredients and equipment we need. Last year, we had some challenges. What with one thing and another, it turned out we were missing a few things. Ever adaptive (of course we’re adaptive, we grew up in rural Alberta!), we were able to innovate and make do. “No rolling pin? Hmm. That’s going to make it harder to roll out the shortbread cookie dough. Well, we could just pat the dough out…or…“Yes! A wine bottle on its side. Yes, the bigger wine bottle will be better. Perfect! “Hah! It works! A little awkward, but functional. You weren’t going to open that wine today were you?” “No cookie cutters? Hmm. Well, pretty boring but we could use an upside down glass to make circle-shaped cookies…” We really missed the little snowman and snow lady cookie cutters. My granddaughter excels in decorating those little shortbread people with eyebrows and facial expressions and icing wardrobes. (One year they wore icing bikinis – a big hit with some relatives, and pursed lips from others! I still giggle whenever I think of them.) *** Last weekend was this year’s Christmas cookie baking day. Once again, we honoured our tradition of “testing” the batter as we go. “Hmm. Butter and sugar. Yep, seems to taste okay.” “Oooh, icing. Yes, I think it will do.” Over the years, all three of us have moved to healthy eating patterns, but Christmas cookie baking day is an off-duty day. If we all feel a little queasy by mid-afternoon after all those gobs of sugar and raw batter, so be it. I figure our Christmas baking day is good for the soul. My body can cope with a sugar-butter-flour day once a year. When in doubt, enjoy! *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

The pipeline debates/ protests illustrate a problem we are now all facing. The environmental side seems to have broken into two factions. One faction is the people who are concerned with the environment but recognize the framework of our society today. They advocate a concerted but sensible move away from hydrocarbon fuels to conservation and the use of alternatives. They are the current Alberta and Canadian governments. The other faction I call extreme environmentalists and they advocate stopping the use of hydrocarbons NOW and often by violence. They seem to believe in a mythical utopia that would suddenly emerge and we would all live happily ever after. They want to burn down your house without fire insurance. Their views on hybrid

cars separate the two factions. Environmentalists see hybrids as a practical way to cut fuel consumption in half and build electric vehicle technology. Extreme environmentalists see hybrids as continuing to use hydrocarbon fuels and they would ban them immediately. Comparing extremism to environmentalism is like comparing ISIS to Islam. Extremism discredits the larger, more sensible, underlying group. Now, sadly, the media cannot (doesn’t want to) distinguish between these two factions and it’s more dramatic to publicize the extremist agenda. We live in a democracy and that is where the majority chooses the government. Not everyone is happy, but consensus rules and there must be acceptance of the consensus by all for democracy to work. Special interest extremism in any form invites what has happened in the US where the majority of lower and middle-class whites have spoken in a backlash. The result is that the US election may have set back fair treatment of everyone. Now for the majority of us who are neither active environmentalists nor extremists here’s what we need to remember: No-one in his or her right mind, left, right, or centre, wants to

destroy this planet. Farmers do not want to destroy their land. However, it is a fact that our standard of living is directly tied to energy consumption so, for today and for many tomorrows, that means using hydrocarbon energy. To the true environmentalists I say watch the extremists, they are damaging you and inviting a backlash that will undo the progress you make. The media inflates how many extremists there are and gives them voice way beyond their numbers. Work in a cooperative, sensible way as illustrated in the recent pipeline approvals, but you now must have the courage to see your decisions through. If you don’t you will lose the support of the majority and a backlash will probably follow as it has in the US. To the extremists I say you will fail because in the short term all you do is freeze the status quo so nothing positive happens, and in the long term the majority will be negatively impacted so they will eventually exercise their democratic power and you will do yourselves more harm than good. Tony Hladun, Camrose

AMA Fill Our Fleet campaign By Lori Larsen

AMA is holding its annual Fill Our Fleet campaign in support of community food banks across Alberta. Beginning Saturday, Dec. 10 and running until Dec. 17 AMA invites residents of Camrose and area to join forces with nearly a million AMA members to help Albertans in need of kindness and generosity. “We will be accepting cash and food donations or a person can purchase one of the AMA teddy bears,” said Camrose AMA registry supervisor Kevin Chornohos. “For every new teddy donated, AMA will donate $5 to Alberta food banks, to a maximum of $50,000.” All donations made

locally will go to the Camrose and District Neighbor Aid Center (food bank). Donations can be made online at fillourfleet.ca or in person at the Camrose AMA located at 6702-48 Avenue. Santa himself made an

appearance on Dec. 10 for the Fill Our Fleet kickoff. Santa was available for photos in exchange of a donation. AMA knows Albertans are eager to pitch in and wants to give them an easy, efficient way to do so.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Nine-year-old Liam Dereniuk from Camrose was happy to help Santa with AMA teddy bears on Dec. 10 during the kick off to the annual AMA Fill Our Fleet campaign.

CARRIERS On behalf of the Circulation Department of the Camrose Booster, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to those of you who work tirelessly to make sure our publication reaches every home in the Camrose community. The efforts of the editorial staff, sales team, creative department and inserting staff would all be for naught without your diligent dedication to providing the utmost of service. Many of our carriers have full-time jobs within the community as well as routes twice a week. Our youth carriers are often involved in sporting or extracurricular activities, yet they find the time to complete deliveries every Tuesday and Thursday without complaint. I would also like to extend a thank you to the Carrier Support Staff: moms, dads, adult children, neighbours and friends who take over during holidays to keep our deliveries flowing smoothly. A special mention goes out to Minthia, Jody, Jack and Caleb, who took on extra routes in the summer so that we could cover summer holidays for all our carriers. The four of you proved to be true team players and I am overwhelmed and so grateful for your dedication!

Leanne Taje Circulation Manager

And finally, a note of thanks to all our readers who have taken the time to call or stop me when I’m out on my rounds, and tell me how happy they have been with their deliveries. Too often we take what seems like a simple service for granted so if you see your carrier out trudging through the snow lugging a bundle of papers, please take the time to let him or her know in person. Or stop by the office and we can pass the message along. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2017!

In spite of the fact that our carriers call at each residence in Camrose at least twice a week, many householders never see them. The carriers who deliver The Booster on Tuesdays and accomplish our Thursday deliveries as required are shown here. By matching the route numbers on the map with the pictures, readers may identify the person who delivers in their area.

Budget approved By Lori Larsen

City council approved the operating and capital budgets for 2017 and 2018 during the regular council meeting on Dec. 5. The budget approval included a 1.27 per cent increase in property taxes for 2017 and a 1.32 per cent increase in property taxes for 2018. City manager Malcolm Boyd spoke about the budget process. “Council has had the opportunity to scrutinize and provide feedback through the various finance meetings and I would like to assure them that all their feedback has been incorporated. Boyd said the creation of the budget also required the involvement of many city staff members. “Everyone involved in the process was very cognizant of the economic environment that we are operating in and as a result we have brought in a 1.27 per cent increase of property tax in 2017 and 1.32 increase in 2018 with no increase in any of the utility rates.” Boyd added that the two year budget was also possible as the result of no staffing changes and reducing contingencies across the board. “We are continuing to strive for transparency at all levels from front line, to council, to the public.” Boyd spoke about the capital projects included in the two year budget including the expansion to the swimming pool ($12 million) and public works building ($ 8 million), the upgrading to the water treatment plant($40 million) and the already approved 48 Avenue bridge replacement project ($8 million). “As council is well aware through the finance committee meetings the funding for these capital projects has been made possible through a combination of capital grant funding and the use of reserves.” Boyd added that the city will still be dependent on capital grant funding and they (administration) will keep a continual eye on reserve balances. Mayor Norm Mayer noted the importance of the city embarking on the four major capital projects (swimming pool, public works building, 48 Avenue bridge replacement and the upgrade to the water and waste treatment plant) and that the funding of these projects will not have a bottom line effect on the tax base. “We are continuing a tight budget to provide the amount of service the city has become known for and to keep Camrose the community that we all chose to live in for many reasons.”

Anne Marie Knudtson Anne Marie Knudtson (age 91) of Camrose passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital on December 8, 2016. Anne Marie was born on May 16, 1925, at the family home north of Donalda, Alberta to Henry and Mina Johnson. Along with her family, she was active in the life of Bethany Lutheran Church. She attended Norbo School and then the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute in Camrose. Anne Marie married Hans Knudtson, also of Donalda, on June 18, 1947. Five children were born to this marriage, four sons and one daughter. Anne Marie spent all of her adult life on the family farm with her husband, Hans, and, after he died, she moved to Hillside Village in Camrose in 2003. In the fall of 2015, Anne Marie moved to the Louise Jensen Centre in Camrose. She had a very good year here, as she enjoyed the connections made with staff and other residents, and with the many friends and family who stopped by for visits. Anne Marie enjoyed a variety of artistic pursuits throughout her adult life, including pottery, oil painting, crocheting and Norwegian folk art (rosemaling). Anne’s Christian faith was always of central importance in her life, and she enjoyed being able to attend the weekly church services and devotional times at the Louise Jensen Centre after having been a shut-in for many years. Bethany Lutheran Church, Meeting Creek Evangelical Free Church and Resurrection Lutheran Church were the centre of her social and spiritual community for many years as she attended weekly services, Bible studies and ladies’ groups. She also played the organ and passed on her love of music to her children, particularly Arthur and Lois. Anne Marie was predeceased by her son, David (1957); her husband, Hans; by two brothers, Clifford (Caroline) and Norman; and by four sisters, Dorothy (Selmer), Doris (Mike), Inez (Art) and Alice. She leaves to mourn four children, Allen of Calgary, Arthur (Kathy) of Donalda, Paul (Elaine) of Cochrane, and Lois Sorenson (Alvin) of Viking; eight grandchildren, Kristy (Rob), Timothy (Sarah), Michael, Nathan (Megan), Philip (Elise), Andrew (Lynne), Jill (Paul) and Edmund; ten great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Alvin Rude (Alice); together with numerous nieces and nephews, and other family and friends. She will be dearly missed. Anne Marie’s funeral will be at Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose on December 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. After lunch at the church, interment will follow at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery north of Donalda. Memorial gifts may be given to Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute, Resurrection Lutheran Church, World Mission Prayer League or a charity of your choice.

Historic Nutcracker told through local dancers By Murray Green

The holiday season brings happiness, love and peace. All three of those are brought to the forefront in Ballet Victoria’s version of The Nutcracker. Professional dancers are joined by young Camrose and area dancers to create the perfect backdrop for your favourite music and memories. “This is a great opportunity to dance with professionals and see how they are, how they practice, get ready for the big show. I’m honoured to be part of this opportunity and some day, hopefully, I will be one of the professionals dancing up there and teaching others,” said Kristen Pearson of Ballet Camrose. “I think it will be a really great experience to be around the professionals, just to see how everything works,” added Natalie Stepan of Camrose Academy of Dance. “Coming from Camrose you would never think we would get such a big opportunity to work with professionals, but now we have the chance to learn and grow with them to gain a better experience,” said Tatiana Howard, also of Camrose Academy of Dance. Ballet Victoria blends the beauty and spirit of the classic with 21st century styles in The Nutcracker that will be featured on the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre stage on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. “We have to practice a lot, the same as other shows, but there are a lot more people involved in a show like this. They (professionals) get to dance with males and we don’t get that chance unless we are in a show like this,” said Kristen. “It is different in that we get to practice with dancers from other groups from around Camrose that we normally don’t work with. It is good to meet people and

dance in different ways,” shared Natalie. “The production is way longer than we are used to. You have to be able to dance for an hour, rather than just three minutes,” said Tatiana. “Last year, I was on stage for a minute and only had one part. This year, I have a couple of different parts and I will be in several scenes, which is exciting,” explained Kristen, who talked about her experience in Sleeping Beauty. “This year, we get to be on stage a lot longer and interact more with the professional dancers. I like The Nutcracker better because we get to dance more and because it is a happier, Christmas show,” added Natalie. All three dancers have about 10 years of experience and want to join a production on the Lougheed Centre stage again. “We do more acting and interacting with other people in this show then we normally do,” said Natalie. Local instructor Lisa Rootsaert has been working

with the young dancers to prepare them for the classic tale. “Last year 12 local dancers were selected to join the show, This year, we have 23, so it gives a lot more dancers an opportunity to be in a production like this,” said Lisa. “This year, it was by audition and we started out with 80 dancers.” “It was good to audition to see everyone and see their strong suits and what they need to work on. It was a good lesson to learn as you prepare for the future,” said Kristen. “This process was good because it brought all of the dancers from the area groups together and from there go into rehearsals and work with dancers you don’t work with on a regular basis,” added Lisa, who was asked to prepare the students for The Nutcracker. “The students are all here because they like to dance and it brings the dance community together and that is what it all about.” Local dancers include Clara, Tatiana Howard; party children Natalie Stepan, Jessica Dehoog, Courtney Bratrud, Keriah Heise,

Jayden Johnson; little party children Rayleigh Shymanski and Ella Sztym; Russian dancers Cadence B ratrud, Karlee Brosius, Abby Sharp, Kristen Pearson and Victoria Watmough; mice Jessica Daniels, Aunika Heise, Brynn Lansing, Brooklyn Pattullo, Baylie Brown, Erin Lowe, Claire Lansing, Kassidey Rafuse, Abigail Hein and Harley Shymanski. When we think of the Nutcracker, we immediately think of the music composed by Tchaikovsky at the end of the 19th century. But as brilliant as the great Russian composer was, the ballet we now know as the Nutcracker was the result of the work of four talented men. In 1816, E.T.A. Hoffman published his version of “The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice,” a dark tale not intended for children. To make it a more appealing story, Alexander Dumas the elder, wrote a sweeping adaptation of the fable, where magic reigns supreme and dreams come true. For Christmas, Clara receives a nutcracker. Night

Mary and her Cockney performer friend, Bert; the siblings try to pass on some of their nanny’s sunny attitude to their preoccupied parents. The ChurchMice Players’ version is directed by Sylvia Lyons. “We wanted a show that would appeal to children. The play only has two children in it, but children and adults know the story and words and can sing along and enjoy it. Our version is more of the Broadway version that has some songs in it that were not in the movie.” Auditions for the local play started back in June and the players have been learning their lines ever since. “We have a cast of about

40 people and I like to get the community involved as much as possible. It is a good number and we have the room at the Lougheed Centre for a bigger production. It is a large stage, so we have lots of room for dancers,” explained Lyons. “In this version we have two nannies, one is good and one is evil. There is a little fight between the two of them. Mr. Banks and the chairman of the bank had the same evil nanny,” said Lyons. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive. ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

falls and the little girl goes looking for her new toy, only to find herself in a world where everything is gigantic and her toys are dancing with mice. Clara throws her slipper at the evil king of the rats, killing him. Our little heroine then passes out and when she comes to the nutcracker has become a prince, who tells her the story of how he was turned into a nutcracker. Marius Petipa, the French choreographer from Marseilles, was the first person to fashion a ballet from this charming little fable. His previous works had included “Swan Lake” and “Don Quichotte.” Unfortunately, illness prevented him from completing work on “The Nutcracker,” so the task fell to his assistant Lev Ivanov, to whom the final ballet is credited. The world premiere of The Nutcracker was held on Dec. 18, 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The original story can be found in The Nutcracker, by Alexandre Dumas the elder.

Mary Poppins show brought back to life

By Murray Green

The ChurchMice Players of Camrose will be presenting Mary Poppins, based on the Broadway and Disney productions. Eight shows from Feb. 9 to 18 will be presented at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. except for a matinee on Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. You will remember the famous film with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Children Jane and Michael, of the wealthy and uptight Banks family, are faced with the prospect of getting a new nanny. They are pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins. They go on a journey of fantastical adventures with

Are you looking for a natural Christmas tree to add that special touch to your holiday season? The Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club are selling groomed Christmas trees at the north end of the Norsemen Inn parking lot. The tree lot hours are Monday to Friday 3 to 7 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 5 p.m. Trees will be sold up to and during the week before Christmas, or until supplies last. Proceeds raised from the sale of the trees go toward a variety of organizations and programs

supported by the Lions Club including, but not limited to: Guide Dogs, CNIB, STARS, Canadian Legion, food bank, Christmas Cheer Fund and Centra Cam, with the majority of the proceeds raised remaining local. The tree lot will be manned by volunteer members and some spouses of the Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club. “We would love to see some local celebrities come out and volunteer their time selling trees on our lot,” said Swans and Roses Lion Club member Gary Cunningham. “It’s for a great cause.”

Welcoming people in is a 14 foot Santa facing 48th Avenue. The lot offers a good assortment of fluffed and wrapped trees for easy transport. This year’s trees come from a Canadian sustainable tree farm and are available in sizes from four to 12 feet high and at prices to suit any budget. Delivery options are also available for trees purchased at the Lions Club tree lot. Take a stroll through the Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club tree lot to look for your perfect tree and add a little old fashioned fun to your Christmas.

Caring for the nutritional health of a newborn is vital in ensuring proper growth and well being. Alberta Health Services would like to help Camrose and district parents by offering free classes on infant nutrition. The classes will be offered in Camrose on Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Camrose Community Health Centre, 5510 46 Ave. The classes are being presented by a registered dietitian. The twohour workshop highlights why babies need to start on high-iron foods at six months and why introducing different food textures is important. Parents are encouraged to bring babies to the class, which focuses on creating a positive feeding relationship. Alberta Health Services dietitians are available to answer questions and show parents how to make

their own baby food using a variety of kitchen tools they may already have at home. Parents learn how to prepare vegetables, fruit, meat and meat alternatives, and infant cereal using a number of different tools including hand mixers, food mills and food processors. The class will conclude with a taste test of store bought baby food and homemade baby foods comparing the taste and texture. Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. For more information and to register to attend the class, telephone 780679-2980.

Consumer reports recommends wireless earphone and headphones, tablets, wireless speakers, handheld computer games, cameras, tickets to concerts or sporting events, drones, hoverboards, playstations, video games, fur pom key chains, portable chargers and cell phone cases. For moms and dads gift ideas can include replacing

worn out, older small appliances with more energy efficient ones, such as, coffee makers, blenders, juicers and toasters. Other trendy ideas include fitness watches, smart watches and technology for a vehicle. Suggested gifts for elder parents or grandparents include toaster ovens, electronic readers, cordless telephones, portable packable humidifiers. Seniors also appreciate gift cards to restaurants, tickets for shows, bus passes or taxi tokens.

One goal games hurting Kodiaks By Murray Green

Seven of the last eight games the Camrose Kodiaks have played in have been decided by one goal. Camrose opened the scoring against the Okotoks Oilers on a tally from Mackenzie Bauer in only 12 seconds into the second period. However, the Oilers fought back to tie it near the end of the period. The teams played well defensively in the third and overtime to force a shootout. Bauer was the only bear to score in the 2-1 shootout loss. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 25 of 26

shots. Camrose directed 29 shots at the Oilers’ net. The Calgary Mustangs galloped to a 2-0 lead and hung on to ride a 2-1 victory against the Kodiaks. Camrose finally scored in the last minute on Dec. 5 when Joe Tambasco replied on offence. Goalie Joey May stopped 17 of 19 shots. Camrose out shot the Mustangs 24-7 in the third period, but couldn’t push the game into overtime. Camrose played a complete 60 minutes as they edged the Calgary Canucks 3-2 on Dec. 3. The Canucks scored twice in the opening

period before local player Jacob Kendall notched the tally that sent the fur flying on Teddy Bear Toss night. The building exploded with gifts for children and by the time the bears were rounded up the momentum switched. Camrose scored twice in the second period with Kyler Kupka and Bauer completing the comeback. Goalie Gora turned away 22 of the 24 shots directed his way. The Kodiaks host Drumheller on Dec. 17 in the last game before the holiday break.

Merry Christmas Fund hampers By Murray Green

It’s two days before Merry Christmas Fund organizers and volunteers start packing hampers and the monies collected are down. “On Dec. 1, we had $12,750 collected and we want to collect at least $29,000,” said public relations chair Dale Debnam. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund was launched in 1965 to supply food hampers to less fortunate families in the community. Although some things have changed through the years, the need to provide food support hasn’t. Last year, the Merry Christmas Fund supplied 250 food hampers by raising $29,879. “Our goal this year is higher. We are estimating the number of hampers to be around 300 and our target goal is to raise $29,879 to cover the cost of the food,” said Dale. “We are hoping people will donate soon because we would like to pay for the food soon after it is delivered. We would like to know if we can pay for the groceries.” Donations can be made at the Royal Bank and at the Camrose Fire Department. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund is a registered charity, so people will be mailed a tax receipt during the first two weeks in January. The food hampers are intended to provide a good Christmas meal and food for an entire day. “If someone wants to have a hamper delivered to them or a family,

they have to register at the Camrose and District Neighbor Aid Center,” said Dale. The number at the centre is 780-679-3220. “The community has supported this project for many years and we are thankful for that,” she added. “We are looking for the community to come through for us again to make Christmas a little brighter for everyone.” Volunteers also help deliver toys packaged by the Camrose Kinettes. “Some hampers will also have toys to deliver at the same address. The Kinettes sort and package the toys, the Lions Club picks them up and drops them off to us and we send them out with the food hampers,” explained Dale. “If volunteers have a small vehicle we give them hampers without a lot of toys and those who have a larger

vehicle can take more. We meet at the current Fire Hall starting at 9 a.m. to start delivering hampers,” said Dale.” For more information about the Merry Christmas Fund, contact Larry Schultz at 780-672-1493. If you need a donation picked up contact Dale Debnam at 780-672-8777. The hampers are delivered to homes on Saturday, Dec. 17, in the morning. If people know they are receiving a hamper, they are asked to be home to receive the hamper to avoid sending it back. Undelivered hampers will have to be picked up at the food bank. She said it is a good outing for families who want to expose their children to a way of getting them into the Christmas spirit and helping others.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Central Agencies Home of the Week

Five bedroom bungalow

Tylor Keller By Lori Larsen

If you are looking for a perfectly priced home that will accommodate the entire family then this five bedroom, three bathroom home is perfect. Located in the built-up Century Meadows subdivision, this home is within walking distance of schools and parks. The main level features a bright open concept and a natural flow from the front room through to the dining room and kitchen. Thanks to large front windows, the home has an abundance of natural light. The kitchen is bright and airy and includes plenty of cabinets, counter space, an office nook and a cafe style eating area with views to the outdoors through a generous sized window. There is another living area on the main level that features a classic fireplace flanked by two tall windows, a wonderful space to curl up and enjoy a good book or have delightful conversations away from the hub of the home. Completing the main level is a master

suite with a four-piece ensuite, two other bedrooms and a four-piece main bathroom. The developed lower level includes a massive family room that could also easily house a play/games area or home office. There are two more good-sized bedrooms on the lower level and another four-piece bathroom. Older children would be overjoyed to have their own private spaces. Off the kitchen is a garden door to a good sized deck that overlooks a completely fenced, beautifully landscaped yard with mature trees and shrubs. It is like having your own private park. There is also convenient back alley access. This well-kept family friendly home at 6208 Erickson Drive is priced at $309,900. For a personal viewing contact Tylor Keller or Cole Walker at: Central Agencies Inc. 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 or Tylor cell 780-281-0016 Cole cell 780- 679-5544
