Counterfeit cash spotted in city By Lori Larsen

Retailers beware, counterfeit bills have been making an appearance in different businesses around Camrose. Making and passing counterfeit notes is a criminal offence in Canada and if you suspect someone is trying to or has passed you a counterfeit note you should report it to the police immediately. Camrose police have been contacted on a couple of occasions regarding suspects trying to use counterfeit bills throughout Camrose. Police reports

On Nov. 16, a downtown business notified Camrose Police Service that two American $20 bills were passed to an employee during a purchase.

A separate downtown business reported that a male attempted to purchase cigarettes and snacks with a Canadian $100 counterfeit bill. The business did not accept the bill and the male left the store. On Nov. 15, a downtown business notified police of two Canadian $100 bills that were passed to an employee during a purchase. Camrose Police Service and Camrose RCMP caution residents to take the proper steps prior to accepting currency to ensure it is legitimate. Counterfeit prevention

Bank of Canada offers tips in counterfeit prevention. Examine the bills. The Bank of Canada offers free

training materials to help the public, businesses, and police agencies use the security features in genuine bank notes. Report suspicious money. Refuse the note (assess for possible risk in doing so then chose your words carefully) and inform the person passing the note you feel it is counterfeit and they should check it with the police. If you suspect you have received a counterfeit note report it and turn it over to the police. If the note is real you will receive the note back. For more information on counterfeit prevention visit www.bankofcanada. ca/banknotes/counterfeitprevention, the Bank of Canada website.

Prediger focuses on Olympics after skeleton win By Murray Green

Lanette Prediger is a step closer to realizing her dream of making Team Canada and competing in the Olympic Games. Prediger, who grew up in Camrose, won the Canadian Women’s Skeleton Championship in Calgary in December. She is also having her best season on the intercontinental circuit. “It was exciting to win because it was my first time winning the event. I’ve been second three times, always the bridesmaid, but I managed to be the bride this time,” said Prediger after her big win. “In the intercontinental circuit, which is just below the world cup, I’ve had three medals in four races. So far, it has been a successful season for me.” Going head first into her sport was not something she shied away from. “It is a strongly skilled based sport. The longer you do it, the better you get at it. It takes a lot of skill and isn’t just something you can be good at right away,” she explained. “I think experience is coming into play now because it is nearly 10 years in the sport. It takes that long to develop a really good skeleton athlete. It is a fast, precise and scary sport. You need a really good plan and lots of experience.” Lanette has been working hard on improving her starts. “My pushes have been faster this year in the first 50 metres, which helps. I’m also more relaxed and confident this year.” Her goal has always been to go to the Olympic Games. “I’m focused on that and preparing for it a lot this season. The Olympics are coming up quickly (February 2018) and I want to make Team Canada. Then I want to perform well for Canada at the Olympics and aim for a medal. I don’t think it is unrealistic,” said Lanette.

FIRST PLACE

Dave Holland Photo Lanette Prediger, formerly of Camrose, won the Canadian skeleton selection races held in Calgary on Dec. 10. She is trying to make Team Canada and compete in the 2018 Olympic Games in Korea.

Canada has a strong skeleton crew, so making Team Canada is almost as tough as the Olympic competition. “Most athletes that compete at that high level of competition are capable of winning medals on any given day. If you can make your way onto the Canadian team, you should have a good chance at medalling in any race. If I make the team, it gives me a good shot at success.” The Olympic track

is still a mystery in Pyeongchang, Korea. “It is being built and no one has gone on it, so it will be new to everyone,” she added. “There are Korean women competing, but they are not as strong. Usually the home team has the advantage, but not in this case.” The number of Canadian athletes going to the Olympics hasn’t been finalized. “It depends on the season next year on how many sleds qual-

ify. It will be based on points. Two nations will receive three sleds and the rest will be allowed two,” Lanette explained. “Hopefully Canada will be in the top two. It is very challenging because there are a lot of strong women’s teams in the world.” Germany, Russia and the United States will all be battling Canada in the top group. “It all depends how well the third person does in each country. You need

a deep team to send three people. We have a shot at it, but it depends on the points that are added up next year.” Lanette will compete in two more races in Calgary, as well as in Lake Placid, New York in January. “I’m used to not knowing where I will be competing very far in advance. It’s the nature of the sport. You have to be flexible and willing to adapt. You need to be ready on a moment’s notice if they call you to go on a plane to Germany tomorrow. They (Canadian sport officials) can shift us between circuits. I’ve learned to go with the flow and see what happens.” Although her focus is on the Olympics, she can’t skip her day job. “I’ve been lucky to balance work with training. I’m not funded, so I need to work. That is my biggest challenge because it is expensive and I bought a new sled this year. I also value my work and my job, said Lanette, who is an emergency care physician in a stand alone facility (not a hospital). “I do shift work, but the place where I work is amazing and very supportive of my schedule. I can work around when I am gone for skeleton races. Over the year it balances out. Calgary is probably the only place that I can train and work close to the facilities. On many days I work and then go training. Most tracks around the world are in remote areas.” Camrose still has a special place in her heart. “It is where my parents live and my sister recently moved back to Camrose. I try to visit as often as I can. It is where my athletic development occurred and I played volleyball at Augustana. Growing up in Camrose gave me an athletic advantage because I could play in so many sports at different levels.”

Kodiaks Kupka selected for Prospects Game By Murray Green

The Canadian Junior Hockey League, in partnership with the National Hockey League and in conjunction with NHL Central Scouting announced the rosters for the upcoming CJHL Prospects Game, which will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in Cornwall, Ont. Kyler Kupka of the Camrose Kodiaks will be one of eight players from the Alberta Junior Hockey League playing for Team West against the best from the east. Each of the players chosen to participate in the CJHL Prospects Game were selected through the efforts

of NHL Central Scouting and are currently among the top 40 CJHL prospects heading into the 2017 NHL Draft in Chicago. “We congratulate each of the players on their selection to compete in the 2017 CJHL Prospects Game in Cornwall and commend NHL Central Scouting for their contributions in helping formalize the Team East and Team West rosters,” said CJHL president Brent Ladds. “We are confident this group of young men will provide all those in attendance, including the multitude of scouts and junior-A hockey fans alike, a tremen-

dous showcase of CJHL talent from right across the country,” added Ladds. “The CJHL Prospects Game is a tremendous opportunity for these players to showcase their ability and represent their teams, leagues and communities on a national stage,” said NHL Central Scouting, headed up by its director, Dan Marr. As a rookie, Kupka has scored 13 goals and added 15 assists for 28 points in 34 games for the Kodiaks. He is tied for third on the Kodiaks in scoring as a 17-year-old player and is from Hay Lakes.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Making space

It’s the beginning of a new year. Lots of us (including me) are thinking about new things we’d like to experience in 2017. I’ve learned to ask a key question: Does my life have space for anything new? ***

Last year I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo. The book inspired me to give away about one-third of what was in my closet, and also to tackle a storage and junk-filled area (formerly known as “guest bedroom”) that had bothered me for a year. A key point in the book was not to ask, “What do I need to get rid of?” but rather to ask, “What am I willing to keep in my life?” For each item, the criteria was, “Does this make me feel a spark of joy?” If so, it was a keeper. If not, it was time to let it go. After the first few “let it go” decisions, the process got easier. I started looking forward to how much I could unload. Many recycle and giveaway bags later, I was amazed at how different I felt. When I opened my closet, I felt spacious and organized. The guest bedroom could now welcome a guest! More importantly, I felt like my mind and emotions and spirit were cleared and expanded. I now had room for new possibilities in my mind, and happier emotions.

Organic

farmers

are

not chemical farmers. As an organic farmer, I need to comment on an article in the September issue of the Country Guide. In the article The Target is Glyphosate, the writer, Gerald Pilger wrote (on page 60) “even organic farmers use this herbicide (glyphosate).” On page 61 he wrote “we also need to showcase farmers (including organic farmers) who use glyphosate on their farms.” We do not use and can not use herbicides, insecticides or fungicides (which we call suicide chemicals).

To become a certified organic farm you need to go through a three year transition period with inspections each year. Certified organic farms are inspected every year for chemical use and contamination. Our fields, bin storage and records are inspected. These inspections have become very rigid and costly since the big chemical companies have been trying to downplay the benefits of organic foods. Robert Snider, New Norway

A friend’s story told of a different kind of “making space.” Earlier in 2016, she and her team came to the conclusion they would no longer work with a major client. At the beginning of the project, it looked good. The work was within their expertise, would increase their profile, and would be a profitable revenue anchor for the year. But as the project progressed, the client became more and more demanding and difficult. The team concluded that, even though the project was an income-generator, they just did not want to work with this client any longer. My friend said, “It took us a day to write the resignation letter.” And then? My friend said, “I’m not making this up.” She went on to say, “Within an hour of clicking the Send button on our resignation letter, six new opportunities landed in my inbox.” They had made space. ***

Lately I’ve been keenly aware that I need to make “mental space” for some of the new things I want to experience, by letting go of some habits and beliefs that no longer serve. I was encouraged to read “Your Brain Has a Delete Button – Here’s How to Use It” by Judah Pollack and Olivia Fox Cabane. The authors explain that when we do or think something repeatedly, we build pathways in our brain (“neurocircuits”). The more you run a neuro-circuit in your brain, the stronger that circuit becomes. That’s why practice makes perfect. The more you practice piano, or speak a new language, or shoot baskets, the stronger those circuits get. But there’s more to learning than strengthening neural connections. Even more important is our ability to break down old ones. It’s called (I love this term!) “synaptic pruning.” Special cells in our brain have the job of seeking out less-used neural pathways and “pruning” them away. The authors say, “This is how your brain makes the physical space for you to build new and stronger connections so you can learn more.” When does this happen? When we sleep. That old adage to “sleep on it” was even wiser than we knew. Here’s a sobering point. Those repeated dark thoughts of mine are creating strong brain pathways. I want to be better at noticing and switching them to happier thoughts. I’d like all my “strong neural pathways” to be happy ones! In the meantime, the next time I decide to stop working and have a nap, I’ll say, “I’m activating my ‘synaptic pruner’ so I can think more clearly.” It will even be true! So – what do you want to make space for in 2017? *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

HATCHIMAL OWNER

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Central Agencies owner Norm Mayer purchased a Hatchimal from Canadian Tire owner Dave Jewell, left, for $400 during an auction on Camrose Now! Canadian Tire matched the amount to give to Camrose and District Neighbor Aid Center program director Jo-Anne Tweed for the food bank. Mayer passed on the Hatchimal to his granddaughter at Christmas. Below: A second Hatchimal was raffled for $540. The amount was split between the food bank, for a total of $1,070, and the JumpStart program, $270, to assist children with participating in sports and activities. Canadian Tire assistant store manager Bobbi Liebl accepted the donation that goes towards helping local children.

WHO can

Drivers must watch for pedestrian safety

I count on?

By Murray Green

Both drivers and pedestrians are responsible for safety. “Pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks, but they also have the responsibility to cross safely,” said Becky Oxton, regional traffic safety consultant in the office of Traffic Safety under Alberta Transportation. “Pedestrian safety is the focus.” Between 2010 and 2014, on average, 43 pedestrians were killed and more than 1,170 were injured, each year. The majority of pedestrian casualty collisions (95.8 per cent) occurred in urban areas in 2014. In the same year, 47.9 per cent of the drivers involved in pedestrian casualty collisions failed to yield the right-of-way to the pedestrian. In 2014, the casualty rates per 10,000 population were highest for pedestrians between the ages of 15 to 19. However, 78 per cent of pedestrians killed were 25 and older she pointed out. On average each year between 2010 and 2014, 17 pedestrians involved in fatal collisions and 119 involved in injury collisions had consumed alcohol prior to the collision.

Dr. Julia Shaw, senior lecturer in Criminology, tells us, “I’m a factual relativist. I abandoned the idea of facts and “the truth” some time last year.” [I’m a Scientist, and I Don’t Believe in Facts]. Ask yourself the following question, “Is it true that we cannot know truth?” If you answer “yes” then we can know at least one truth and the statement that we cannot know truth is false. She’s not alone. Several years ago, a teacher at Augustana College challenged a letter I wrote by claiming we can’t know ‘absolute’ truth. We exchanged a few letters, but I hadn’t studied enough to debate the issue properly. I should have asked if it’s ‘absolutely’ true that we can’t know ‘absolute’ truth. If it is only true for him (subjective truth), there’s no reason for me to believe him. If it is always true (absolute truth), then we can know absolute truth and he is wrong. This might all sound

a little finicky–why should we care if some academics don’t believe in truth? These academics write books and articles and teach. Their ideas get passed through our culture in classrooms, television, and theatre and they cripple our ability to think. I often wonder why so many intellectuals–people occupied with the pursuit of knowledge–would embrace a philosophy that denies our ability to know anything. The only explanation that makes sense is that true knowledge leads to God, and many intellectuals don’t want God, so they are willing to abandon all knowledge to deny God. Some will even admit it openly. “It’s that I hope there is no God! I don’t want there to be a God; I don’t want the universe to be like that.” Thomas Nagel. “[to abandon] meaning is finally to refuse God and his [foundation], reason, science, the law.” Roland Barthes. The foundation of Western civilization, our ability to feed, clothe, and heal the world, and our desire for truth and justice, is Jesus Christ. “Jesus answered him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life…’” When we abandon Jesus, we abandon truth, justice, reason and science. With God, all things are possible. Without God, we are lost. Dave Gosse, Camrose Carbon tax

Jan. 1 has come and has

gone. We all are noticing the effects of our government’s carbon tax. This year gas has an added 4.49 cents per litre. Natural gas has an added 1.011 per GJ. According to the government website on this tax, it states “All Albertans who take steps to reduce their emissions by turning down the heat, while no one is at home, installing smart thermostats, choosing more fuel efficiency cars, using public transit (including taxis), walking, biking or taking advantage of coming efficiency programs can reduce the cost of the carbon levy.” I have looked at these programs. There is nothing for renters, only owners of homes. All the programs require money to be spent up-front. For those on support income, there is really nothing to help them, but a few dollars thrown their way to give them a little relief from the high costs which businesses will pass onto the consumer. This tax will help those who are in the middle class only. This will be one huge mess for the next government to fix when this government is tossed out in 2019. Time will tell if I am right, or wrong. I sure do hope that the impact which I am describing will be wrong for Alberta’s sake. Lorne Vanderwoude, Camrose

Impaired drivers make roads unsafe By Murray Green

Driving drunk, or high is driving impaired. Whether you’re caught driving drunk or high on drugs, you will face the same consequences. In 2015, nearly half of all 24-hour licence suspensions in Alberta were due to drug impairment. Across Canada, the Traffic Injury Research Foundation found that 40 per cent of drivers who died during 2012 tested positive for drugs. A study by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse reports that cannabis creates performance deficits in many skills required to drive safely, such as tracking, reaction time, and concentration. Studies of driving performance (both simulated and on-road) show increased likelihood to swerve, following distance, and speed as a function of cannabis use. Alberta is slightly above the national average for drugged driving at 41 per cent. In 2012 82 drivers killed in collisions tested positive for drugs. “There is a common

misunderstanding that driving after using cannabis is safer than driving after consuming alcohol,” said regional traffic safety consultant Becky Oxton. “Another misconception is about the police’s ability to detect impairment for drug use. Our goal is to debunk the myths around drug impaired driving.” D r iv i ng wh ile impaired by drugs and refusing to comply with a demand for physical sobriety tests or to provide bodily fluid samples is a criminal offence. Drivers who are pulled over on suspicion of drug impairment may be asked to complete a standardized field sobriety test, which checks for divided attention impairment. This test gives an officer reasonable and probable grounds to then ask for a drug recognition investigation. For more information contact your local police department, or traffic safety consultant Becky Oxton at becky.oxton@gov. ab.ca or 780-554-7218.

Hardisty receives arena support

Battle River Community Foundation Ambassador Ken Drever presented a cheque to James Morrison, president of the Hardisty Arena Management Board to assist with arena operations.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to the Town of Hardisty to support community arena operations. The grants are from income from Bricker-Drever Fund, created to allow the donor to recommend grant recipients for consideration by the Foundation board. T he Bat t le R iver Community Foundation exists to support communities in East Central Alberta and have a positive impact on their future. Grants from the Battle River Community Founda-

tion are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4,470,000 to support community facilities and programs such as those available in the Town of Hardisty.

The family of Stuart Church announces his passing on December 23, 2016, surrounded by people who love him. Grieving his loss are his wife of 65 years Lorraine (Partlow); three sons and their families: Donald and Sandra Church of Olds; Paul and Mariken Church of Diemen, The Netherlands; Brian Church and Kathy Cave of Lacombe with their children Eli Church, Eric and Mina Church, Kody Stuart, Brooklyn Stuart; Robert and Margaret Church of Gull Lake with their children Wade Church and Ida Tornqvist, and Sarah Church; and a daughter, Dr. Kathryn Church of Toronto. Stuart was born at Oyen, Alberta on July 6, 1923. He gave four years of his youth to military service in World War II before returning to be educated at Vermilion College of Agriculture and the University of Alberta (BSc). Over four decades, from the Lacombe Research Station to the Alberta Agricultural Development Corporation, he dedicated his career to strengthening family farms in Alberta. Stuart was a longstanding member of First Baptist Church in many leadership roles. A great lover of the outdoors, he made a substantial contribution to the development of Gull Lake Baptist Camp. Stuart enjoyed both sports and music. He coached Little League Baseball and Minor League Hockey, and sang tenor with the Lacombe Male Chorus and Lacombe Centennial Choir. Stuart had an inquiring mind and many natural talents including carpentry and gardening – as amply displayed by the family house and garden. His irrepressible humor lightened our lives even in his final days. The family wishes to thank Drs. Van Niekerk, M. Unger and Chatel as well as the nursing staff at the Lacombe Hospital for their guidance and skilled care. Cremation has taken place. A public celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Thank You

Laura Crawford who passed away on January 10, 2012 Missing someone isn’t about how long it’s been since you’ve last seen them, or how much time has lapsed since you last talked. It’s more than that. It’s about that very moment when you find yourself doing something and wishing they were right there with you. As we sit and whisper, “I miss you”, we believe somehow you can still hear us. Gone from sight, but never from our hearts. – Jean, Scott, Susan

Gerard and Michael Wenger and families send their sincere thanks to Dr. Slabbert and the nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital for the great care that Stanley received. A special thank you to Faith House staff where Stanley called it being on a holiday every day. We are truly thankful for all our friends who supported us with calls, cards, food and flowers through this sad time. A special thank you to Father Greg and the choir. Thank you to A-1 Catering for the nice lunch. Finally, a special thank you to Tyler and Layne at Weber Funeral Home for all of their guidance and assistance.

Songbook Sunday adds Musical Mamas By Leslie Lindballe

Start the year off right with community music at Songbook Sunday at the Bailey Theatre. Many people in the Camrose area have come to

know the monthly songcircle, typically held on the second Sunday of the month. The word is spreading. This month, the Musical Mama’s Society plans to make a field trip out from Edmonton.

Founded in Edmonton in 2014 by Sinder Sparks, Musical Mamas brings female musicians together to support each other and expand their craft. Their monthly gathering has recently culminated in a compilation disk featuring some of the regular members, and they hope to make this a yearly tradition. “The Edmonton scene has some remarkable women and we’ve been able to invite not only musicians, but industry professionals to learn from. The whole process has been a great learning and bonding experience within the musical community,” said Sparks. Songbook Sunday plays a similar role, inviting players and lovers of music to gather together to sing, play and listen. The afternoon begins with an in-the-round hour where everyone is invited to play together before taking the stage solo, or in a bandscramble format. There will be interesting combinations with the meeting of the two groups. Songbook Sunday will be held on Jan. 8, starting at 2 p.m. at the Bailey Theatre. Entry is by donation.

Preserving our past at Centennial Museum By Lori Larsen

We store much of our past in our memories but for those historical pieces of yesteryear that deserve a safe place the Camrose and District Centennial Museum does a wonderful job of rehabilitating, recording and carefully storing antiquities and heirlooms so residents and future residents can enjoy them for years to come. Recently the museum received an anonymous donation of textiles (clothing articles and postcards) that has volunteer Emma Marentette beaming with excitement. Marentette, a fairly new addition to the dedicated volunteers of the museum, has been carefully sifting through the stacks of items in an effort to find some information that may lead to the owners of the items but more importantly the stories they tell. “There is masking tape in the clothes items and most of them have the name (surname) Sanders written on the tape,” said Marentette. She carefully removed what she believes to be a very small sized, intricately made lace wedding gown and some wedding socks and placed them on a cloth spread out on the table. Marentette noted that one of the leather postcards was addressed to an A. Sanders (Norwegian decent), while the other postcards were

addressed to Mary or Mae Cole (Irish decent.) Through 1906 census information Marentette was able to determine that Mary E Cole was 16 years old and lived in New Norway, listed still under her parents. The census also revealed that Mary had immigrated from the United States in 1901. In the same 1906 census Marentette found information indicating 19-year-old Albert Sanders lived in Camrose working as a druggist and also immigrated from the United States. By studying the leather postcards, part of the same donated box of artifacts, Marentette was able to ascertain that Miss Mary Cole received postcards postmarked 1907 and 1909 in Camrose. “The very first high school class was in Camrose in 1907 and she (Mary Cole) would have been 17 years old,” said Marentette. “So it seems possible that she came to Camrose to study for a year.” As romance often goes, Albert Sanders and Mary Cole met and according to the 1911 census wed and were listed together as Albert and Mae (originally Mary) Sanders. Marentette opened the Early History of Camrose book published in 1947 and turned to a page containing

a weathered photo of a March 17, 1908 dance, and there pictured in the back row numbered 12 and 13 were Albert Sanders and Miss Mae (Mary) Cole. “They had gone to the dance together,” speculated

Marentette. “But were not yet married.” Marentette’s next project is to find marriage records for the couple and eventually learn which church they were married in and hopefully find some wedding photos. Marentette recently com-

pleted her undergraduate degree in Art History and hopes to continue her studies to obtain a masters in textile conservation. She also completed a two year internship at the Royal Alberta Museum working with a textile conservationist. Originally from Camrose and with her family still living in Camrose, she moved back to work and save money in order to eventually study in Europe. “I always liked textiles,” she said. “My mom taught me to knit at six years old, then I learned to sew, embroider, weave and spin.” Following her passion and after completion of her Masters to become a textile conservationist Marentette hopes to continue her work with museums preserving the textile artifacts, specifically those that uncover women’s history. “I think simple textiles can tell us so much about how regular people lived.” Perhaps with assistance from anyone in Camrose or surrounding communities that may know more about the items donated, or the identity of Mary (Mae) Cole-Sanders or Albert Sanders, the story can continue to unfold as the items take their rightful place in history. Contact Emma Marentette at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum at 780-672-3298 if you have any information on these items.

Spend your winter at Miquelon By Murray Green

It’s a winter wonderland at Miquelon Lake. Mild winter weather is creating the perfect conditions to get outdoors and enjoy some seasonal fun in Alberta’s provincial parks this holiday season. You could spend an afternoon of tobogganing with the children, crosscountry skiing through a still winter forest, or skating on a frozen lake, winter activities are plentiful at parks throughout the province. You can also combine skiing with exploring. Skijoring involves cross-country skiing with the help of one or more dogs. The skier wears a skijoring harness and is connected with a rope to a dog wearing a sled dog harness. The cross-country skier provides power with skis and poles and the dog adds additional power by running and pulling. Skijoring is permitted on Beaver Hills, Chickadee, Deer, Ermine, Fox and Grouse Loop trails, as well as the Shoreline Path. Winter activities such as ice fishing, disc golf, snowshoeing and camping can be discovered at AlbertaParks.ca. The website also includes trail reports to help visitors prepare for their adventure. Snowshoe rentals are available through the Miquelon Park Centre from Monday to Friday. Phone 780-678-2022 for rental reservations. It is a short drive to Miquelon Lake Provincial Park to enjoy skating (ice rink is located near the park centre), or many of the other winter activities. A provincial park or provincial recreation area exists within one hour’s drive of every Alberta community, so opportunity abounds to spend outdoor quality time with friends and family this holiday season.

Shandro offers Songs of Love and loss By Murray Green

Share the powerful songs from soprano Shaunna Shandro as she reflects on love and loss in her concert at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. Revel in the power and expressive skills of the celebrated singer she brings to the stage. Shandro will be accompanied by University of Alberta Augustana pianist Roger Admiral. Shandro is busy with a variety of tasks such as acting, teaching voice, directing, adjudicating, playing piano, but it is her own voice that is the most powerful on stage. She teaches applied voice at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas and is the director of music for children and youth at the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Before her move to Texas, Shandro was a guest music teacher at Augustana in 2014, where she assisted with the recital performance of arias, art songs, musical theatre pieces, masterclass for voice majors, focused on vocal technique and dramatic interpretation in opera arias and art songs. She teaches several styles such as world, pop, opera, jazz, folk, gospel, rock, classical and musical theatre when she isn’t on stage herself. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive.ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances.

P L A N N E R Weddings, Grads and other occasions. Brought to you by…

Save the date messages Couples want all of the special people in their lives to witness their vows, and giving guests advance notice can ensure as many loved ones as possible attend the ceremony. To be certain that guests have ample notice to clear their schedules, many couples now turn to save-thedate cards, which announce weddings well in advance of the actual wedding day. Save-the-date cards have become commonplace for all weddings because many people (wedding guests) plan vacations or business trips anywhere from four to six months in advance. Save-the-date cards are typically mailed six to eight months prior to the wedding. Once a date and a location is secured, save-the-dates can be ordered and mailed. Save-the-date cards require couples to assem-

ble their guest lists well in advance of the wedding. Everyone who will get a wedding invitation should also receive a save-the-date card. It’s acceptable to mail save-the-date cards even if some wedding day details are still up in the air. Guests really only need to know the date and location of the wedding. Couples also can use the save-the-date card to direct invitees to a wedding website where guests can learn the details of the wedding as they unfold. RSVP information does not need to be included on the save-the-date card. Save-the-date cards are much less formal than invitations, so couples can have fun with them. Keep in mind it is in poor taste to mention gifts or registries on savethe-date cards. There will be plenty of time to direct guests to registries later on.

The history of the wedding cake The tall, tiered wedding cake—with or without toppers—is one of the most widespread wedding traditions in the western world. You’ve probably tasted a slice or two over the years, but what do you know about the origins of this sweet nuptial custom? Historians believe that the concept of wedding cakes can be traced back to ancient Rome. At that time, it was customary to break a wafer or loaf of sweet bread over the bride’s head with the goal of invoking happiness and fertility. In medi-

eval Europe, wedding guests typically stacked small pastries as high as possible, and the bride and groom would kiss over the resulting pile of sweetness. The higher the pastry tower was, the happier the couple would be. Sweet, tall, tiered cakes like those seen today in weddings across North America only became commonplace around the eighteenth century. Nowadays, bakeries create wedding cakes that are true works of art. Anything goes when it comes to the shape, flavour and colour—

and toppers are no longer limited to the tiny bride and groom model.

A symbolic gesture The tradition of the wedding cake being sliced by the bride and groom dates back to the Middle Ages. The gesture symbolized the first action taken by the bride and groom as a legitimate couple. Traditionally, the groom rests his hand on the bride’s as a sign of fertility and protection.

How to choose your wedding photographer in three steps

ou’ve carefully chosen the right life partner, soon it will be time to choose a home building or renovation partner! As married life unfolds, you’ll inevitably want to make your house a nicer home. We sell everything from laminates to lighting, paint to plumbing repairs, housewares, appliances, home expressions and decorating. Should your family grow from two to, let’s say, twelve, count on us for all the construction materials you’ll need to renovate or build from scratch. Our aim is to be your partner for life in hardware, home decorating ideas and a whole lot more. Count on the pros to find help and happiness!

Are you looking for a photographer that will immortalize every magical moment of your wedding, all while bringing out everyone’s best side? Follow these steps to make sure you succeed in your quest. 1. Do your homework Start by making a list of local professional photographers and have a look at their portfolios, eliminating the ones you don’t like right away. Seeing the work of different pros will help you determine whether you prefer a romantic, vintage, festive, or natural style for your own wedding photos. Then, draw up a (short) list of the photographers whose talents you appreciated and whose fees suit your budget. 2. Meet the candidates Once your preliminary selection is made, contact

each candidate to set up a meeting. After all, even if you really like their work, you still have to make sure that your personalities don’t clash. Remember that your photographer will be almost as close as your shadow on your big day. Consequently, it’s vital that you feel comfortable with the person— your state of mind, positive

or not, will shine through in your photos.

YES! We offer a handyman’s Bridal Registry Service! See us for details

3. Sign the contract The last step, but not the least, consists in making your agreement official. It’s important to sign a contract, because it is legally binding and covers you in case of unforeseen events or misunderstandings. See to it!

Three tips to help you plan your destination wedding Do you dream of saying “I do” to the love of your life barefoot in the warm sand? If so, know that getting married in paradise is relatively easy to do. Follow these three tips to plan an unforgettable ceremony under the sun. 1. Determine your needs First, decide what you want and set your priorities. Brainstorm with your part-

ner about your ideal destinations and discuss when you’d like to hold the ceremony. Draw up your guest list and establish a firm budget to avoid getting carried away. 2. Call on an expert A travel agent can give you the inside scoop on the best deals and destinations for your special day. Thanks to his or her expertise, the agent will make recommen-

dations based on your needs, your budget and your expectations. Most beach resorts offer all-inclusive wedding packages; if that’s something you’d be interested in, ask your agent for details. 3. Send out your invitations early Send out your wedding invitations as soon as you’ve settled on a wedding date. The earlier you inform your invitees about your plans, the better. Aim for at least six months notice to allow your guests to prepare for the trip. If some of your friends or family members can’t make it to your wedding destination, plan a celebration with them when you get back home.

Creating a wedding checklist can help couples not only stay on task, but on budget and will help to alleviate the worries of forgetting something on the special day. First and foremost determine a budget. Like anything else if you do not have a budget it is very likely you will overspend which can cause stress during and after the big event. Twelve months

Determine your guest list. Going over the list a few times will help to prioritize the list and cut back where needed. Providing for guests at your event is the most expensive cost and accounts for 45 to 50 per cent of your entire wedding budget. Choose and book a venue discussing with your venue representative the approximate number of guests expected. Select a person to officiate over the ceremony. Shop for and chose a wedding dress. Research various services and suppliers such as florists, photographers, invitations printers, entertainment, event planners, cake decorators and caterers Decide on food, drink and entertainment for the event. Book a photographer and videographer. Send out Save the Date notifications to guests, especially if you are planning a destination wedding or one during busy times of the year. Eight months

Book ceremony music and the band, DJ or other entertainment for the reception. Research accommodations for out of town guests and make reservations where possible. Contact rental companies that may be required for the ceremony such as decor, tents, tables and chairs. Order the cake. Book groomsmen’s suits if renting. Six months

Ensure you have valid passports, if necessary. Best man and maid of honour should be planning wedding showers or stags. Choose bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen suits (if being purchased). Choose and order wedding invitations and stationery. Meet with f lorist to choose bridal party arrangements and floral decor. Ensure all legal documents are organized and in some jurisdictions ordered.

If required, arrange for travel vaccinations. Organize wedding transportation. Two to three months

Send out invitations to guests. Order wedding rings. Where applicable rent the groomsmen attire. First dress fitting. Purchase or prepare gifts for parents, bridesmaids, groomsmen and each other where applicable. Book hairdresser and other wedding day preparations such as nails or makeup. Organize a RSVP list to keep track of the amount of guests attending and their names. One month

Final dress fitting. Confirm all vendors. Two weeks

Review the final RSVP list and contact any guests who have not yet responded to prepare for final count. Deliver the list of musthave photographs to photographer. One week

Give the venue and caterer the final guest count. If using an event planner (volunteer or paid) supply them with a list of decoration wants, head table and guest placement and placement of items such as guest book, gift table, photo booths and entertainment (DJ or band set up). Supply the ceremony and venue locations with vendor names, contact numbers and schedules for the event. Pack for honeymoon and wedding night. Final fitting for groomsmen and groom. Day before

Drop off place cards, table cards, favours, table plan to reception location coordinator. Double check all vendors and arrange for final payments. Rehearsal ceremony and dinner with full wedding party. Get a good night’s sleep and do not over indulge. Big day

Floral delivery to bride and bridesmaids. Give wedding rings to best man. Pay the officiate. Ensure there is one person delegated to work with reception coordinator in the event of questions or problems. Enjoy the day. After the wedding

Arrange for all rentals to be returned. Make all final payments to applicable vendors and venue. Send thank you notes to gift-bearing guests.

Wedding bells are ringing By Lori Larsen

Whether you are planning a smaller intimate gettogether or larger grand affair, wedding planning requires time and organization. If you have the budget for it hire an event planner, if not garner as much reliable and trustworthy help as you can. Remember, ultimately this is your big day, so anyone you get to help you should do so to your specifications. Get organized. Create a Wedding Book or binder that contains all the information on vendors as well as ideas and pictures. Chose a date early. Weddings, like any major event will include all those special people who may also need to plan in advance. Be aware of any community events that may affect booking venues, hotels and availability of other services you may require. Have a budget and stick to it as closely as possible. Prioritize with your budget in mind. If your dress cost a little more

than you anticipated cut back on your decor. Typically wedding budgets are be broken down as follows: 48 to 50 per cent allotted to the reception (dinner and venue); eight to 10 per cent for flowers; eight to 10 per cent for attire; eight to 10 per cent for entertainment/music; 10 to 12 per cent for photo/ video; two to three per cent for invitations; two to three per cent for gifts for the wedding party and guest favours; and eight per cent for miscellaneous items. Plan for the unexpected with a five to 10 per cent contingency fund. Prior to selecting the venue determine approximately how many guests will be attending your wedding. If you plan on having a sit down dinner and dance the rule of thumb is about 25 to 30 square feet per guest. Time can be your best friend or your worse enemy when it comes to planning that special day. So on a final note, give yourself plenty.

Safely secure child car seats to prevent injuries Child safety restraints are required by law for all children under the age of six who weigh less than 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Kids need a boost

Depending on their age, size and walking ability, children should be restrained in rear- or forward-facing child safety seats. Children under nine years of age who weigh between 18 and 36 kilograms (40 – 80 pounds) are safest using a booster seat. “The fact is that child safety seats and seatbelts save lives, reducing fatalities and serious injuries by between 45 and 65 per cent,” said Brian Mason, minister of transportation. “Making sure you wear your seatbelt and your child is riding in an approved safety seat is one of the best safety decisions you can make for you and your family.”

Child safety seats are ineffective unless used properly. That’s why the Alberta government has developed free, online child safety seat training. It will help caregivers and professionals who work with children learn how to properly select, install and use child safety seats. Five per cent of Albertans do not wear their seatbelts on a regular basis. This represents the equivalent of two cities the size of Red Deer not wearing their seatbelts–that is 200,000 Albertans risking their lives. Occupant restraints

Children should remain in their rear-facing seat until they are at least one year of age and weigh at least 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and are walking independently. Children should remain in their forward-facing seat

until they reach the maximum weight and height allowed for their seat and the child is at least 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and six years of age. Children who are under nine years of age, who weigh between 18 and 36 kilograms (40 – 80 pounds) or are less than 145 cm (four feet nine inches) tall are safest in a booster seat when riding in a vehicle. Without a booster seat, a child is three-and-a-half times more likely to suffer a significant injury. Children under the age of 12 are safest in the back seat of a vehicle in proper restraints based on their age, height and weight. The fine for not using a seatbelt or child safety seat is $155. In Alberta, the law requires that all occupants travelling in a motor vehicle

use a seatbelt or child safety seat that is properly worn and adjusted. Drivers are responsible to ensure that all passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured using either a child safety seat or seatbelt. Drivers may be fined for each unrestrained passenger under the age of 16. Seatbelts save about 1,000 lives per year in Canada. Seatbelts distribute the force of a collision evenly to the stronger parts of a person’s body. In a crash, a vehicle travelling 50 km/h comes to an abrupt stop in 1/100th of a second. At 50 km/h, an unrestrained person, weighing 80 kilograms (176 pounds), will strike whatever he or she hits first with a force of 2,785 kilograms (6,215 pounds). Airbags are a supplemental protection and only

function properly if the occupant is restrained in a proper position by a seatbelt. Airbags deploy at an explosive speed and can cause injury if the occupant is not properly positioned. Modern vehicles are designed with an engineered life space or passenger compartment that can withstand the force of most impacts. Seatbelts keep occupants from being ejected through the windshield or thrown around the passenger compartment. In a collision, unrestrained occupants increase the risk for everyone in the vehicle. An unrestrained occupant may hit something or someone inside the vehicle; or they may be ejected from their vehicle onto the road, guardrail or into another vehicle.

Wedding transportation tips to travel in style Weddings are momentous events for the couple getting married, as well as all of the friends and family invited to share in the big day. Though arranging wedding day transportation can be difficult, there are ways to make the process go more smoothly for guests and bridal party members. Before a transportation plan can be made, couples must first map out their needs. Everything should be built around the ceremony. Once the ceremony time has been set, the rest of the day can be arranged around that time. Determine how much time is needed to travel from the ceremony to the reception area. Allocate enough time before the cocktail hour to allow for traffic, photos and any other needs that may take up time. Couples do not want anyone, included themselves, to feel rushed. Once the timing has been orchestrated, couples can figure out exactly which types of

transportation will be required. Happy couples must make their own transportation their top priority. Arrange for the couple’s transportation between five and seven months in advance of the wedding. It could be preferable to book it even further in advance if a couple is getting married around a

holiday or during prom season when limousines and party buses are in high demand. Remember, unless the bride-to-be plans to be seen by her groom, couples will need separate transportation to the ceremony site. Factor multiple vehicles into the wedding transportation budget. Brides and grooms

have many transportation options at their disposal. If a limousine doesn’t add the spark of creativity they desire, they can opt for a VW bus or a retro roadster. Outdoor enthusiasts might want to ride off on horseback, while easy riders might prefer to rev up the engine on a motorcycle. Couples should never feel

penned in by tradition, especially when something else makes them feel remarkable and the budget allows for it. Couples generally opt to arrive to the wedding and reception in style, but take their own vehicles or cabs home afterward. This requires some advanced planning. Enlist the help of friends to park the return-trip car in a convenient location. Check with the catering hall to see if a vehicle can be left in their lot overnight. Otherwise, arrange to grab a ride home with friends or family. Have the names and phone numbers of taxi or ride-sharing services available for those who may not be able to drive after the party. Elderly or disabled guests might appreciate prearranged transportation as well. Although couples can arrange for transportation as a courtesy to others, they don’t need to make arrangements for everyone.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Premier tells Albertans to walk By Murray Green

In a news conference about how the carbon tax will impact Albertans, Premier Rachel Notley said that if and when gas prices go up because of the tax, taking the bus or walking are other options. This follows a pattern of the premier previously calling Alberta “embarrassing cousins” and telling Albertans to “make better choices” when trying to deal with the carbon tax, indicated the Wildrose opposition. The carbon tax increases prices on everything on Jan. 1. Premier Notley has no sympathy for hardworking Albertans who won’t be able to afford the new tax. “The premier has a choice here – she can forge ahead with her risky

carbon tax, or she can listen to the overwhelming majority of Albertans who are pleading the NDP to not go ahead with this plan,” Wildrose leader Brian Jean said. “While the premier lives in the bubble of a six figure salary and a motorcade, taking the bus or walking simply isn’t an option for many families going about their daily lives or hardworking Albertans with lengthy commutes trying to make a decent living.” To date the NDP has refused to release a comprehensive economic impact analysis of what the tax will cost Alberta families. “Our economy is struggling, over 100,000 Albertans have lost their jobs, and the NDP’s solution is to add another tax onto families in our province,” Jean said.

Dec. 26

Police received a complaint from a residence due to a family fight which was continuing to escalate. Police mediated the situation and family members were separated for the day. A complaint was received by a woman who was pushed by her ex-boyfriend during a verbal confrontation.

House of Commons faces uncertain year

By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

For a lot of families in our constituency there is uncertainty in the New Year. In the northern part of our riding too much crop was left in the fields because of the early cold weather. Still, we had a good crop, but hardly anyone can remember when we were unable to harvest it all. In the ridings surrounding ours and our province as a whole, workers and families are confronting an employment situation and economic prospects that are completely opposite to what the opportunities were just over a year ago. The economy in Alberta has left us frustrated with both the provincial and federal governments. As the House of Commons in Ottawa prepares to rise for the Christmas adjournment, the Liberal government has caused a great deal of uncertainty to remain on numerous files. This includes the Liberal government’s ‘thin soup’

legislative agenda in their first year–they have provided Parliament with very little to work on. Yet, Canada’s economy is not growing and the Liberals have failed to help create a single full-time position. Just over a year ago, jobs were being created by the thousands–month after month. Many items, including major election campaign promises by the Liberals have yet to be introduced. Yet, $30 to 34 billion (depending on which economic analyst you cite) have already been borrowed and spent, including almost $5 billion sent off-shore after the Liberals promised Canadians that annual deficit spending would be limited to $10 billion. The climate change strategy has raised more questions than are being answered. We really only know that much of the work and costs will be foisted onto the provincial and territorial governments. The Liberals are quick to say, “… every jurisdiction is free to do whatever works for them.” But the fact remains that every jurisdiction will have to compete with American firms that do not have a carbon tax on everything. The vast majority of Canada’s exports go to the USA and

the price of our products (and our energy costs to make them) is soaring. The Liberals closed the door on Northern Gateway, a project that would have created 4000 well-paying jobs. There continues to be uncertainty surrounding the Liberal-approved Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Expansion Project and the 157 conditions attached to the approval. There is much uncertainty for the next Parliamentary sitting in the New Year and much work to be done. The Liberals have made a mess of their attempt to eliminate Canada’s 150-year-old voting system. Canada’s democracy is arguable one of the best in the world– we help other nations adopt and implement our voting system. Conservatives have been clear from the beginning: if the Liberals insist on changing the rules of Canada’s democracy, every Canadian must have a say. The only way for every Canadian to be heard is through a referendum.
