…their custom of ringing in a new year on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at Camrose Regional Exhibition. The amazing Polka Ramblers will provide live music throughout the celebratory evening. In addition, the Camrose Veselka Ukrainian Dancers, a group of talented local youth, will commemorate their Ukrainian culture with colorful costuming and fast-paced dance moves perfected after hundreds of hours of practice. No evening devoted to the people who originate from the Ukraine would be complete without an abundance of food made from recipes passed down through the generations. New Wild Rose Co-op meat department manager, Glen Levy. t doesn’t get any better than when a passion and a job are one and the same. Glen Levy found the passion for his vocation as a teenager working on the floor at Barrhead Custom Packers. He also met the love of his life, wife Kerry, when he was 17 and she was 15, on that very same floor. That was 39 years ago. Since then, Glen has been the meat department manager in that same Barrhead shop and then later managed the meat department for Vinet’s Food King in Camrose. He has tried his capable hands
at other jobs over the years but being in a meat shop is really where he feels at home. Glen is renowned among family and friends for making delicious, savory sausage as a hobby in his home shop. He has a gift and now he is bringing his considerable skills to manage the meat department at Wild Rose Co-op in Camrose. If you’re looking for fresh handmade sausage, cuts of beef, pork, chicken, and more, you owe it to yourself to experience the Co-op meat counters for the very best.

The CAMROSE BOOSTER, January 10, 2017 – Page 4
A few area residents share their perspectives Looking ahead at the year to come a few familiar faces of Camrose and Camrose County were asked to express their views on some matters of interest for 2017. Each participant was asked the following five questions. What do you think the outlook is for Alberta’s economy in 2017 and how might it affect the City of Camrose and or Camrose County? What would be the one thing you would like to see change or happen for the City of Camrose and or Camrose County to better provide for the residents? What are your views on the NDP political path for 2017? What plans and involvement do you have to help the City of Camrose and or Camrose County to celebrate Canada’s 150 Celebration? What is your wish for the New Year (for either the City of Camrose or Camrose County)?
Representing Camrose County and on behalf of the county council, reeve Don Gregorwich replied. 1. “The outlook for Camrose County and the Alberta economy is uncertain at best. Whether we like it or not oil is the key,” he noted. “If oil prices go to $50 plus it will stabilize the economy as would strong agricultural prices which, at the moment, are struggling in some areas. On a more national scale, Mr. Trump is a wild card and his actions could drastically affect our entire country and, in doing so, our provincial and local economy. “The carbon levy will penalize County operations to the tune of approximately $230,000 in 2017 and that is unrecoverable, so our taxpayers will have to pick that up. 2. We continue to search for and encourage new industrial development within our county. Industrial development provides employment, spin off development and revenue income which has a benefit for residential taxpayers.” 3. “We (county) are nervous about this government,” said Gregorwich. “Some of its legislation, which was literally installed overnight, shows that it is governing by ideology rather than by fact and economic reality. This is shown by Bill 6, by the raising of the minimum wage and the decimation of rural communities like Forestburg and Hanna by closing coal fired power plants. The welfare of rural Alberta seems to be taken very lightly by this government.” Gregorwich made reference again to the added cost the county will bear as a result of the introduction of the carbon levy. 4. “Camrose County has established a Canada 150 fund which is available to communities to celebrate the 150. Since our county is a community of communities, as opposed to being in one location like the City of Camrose, we hope that member communities will apply to this fund for their
commemorative projects. As well, we continue to have Legacy Fund for community projects.” 5. “My wish is that everyone enjoy good health and that we appreciate the many blessings we have as Canadians,” remarked Gregorwich. On a note from the county he added “The county hopes by continuing to look for industrial development and that while agriculture is the backbone of our community we will strive to supplement that in order to make communities healthier. When we make our communities healthier we improve our school children, strengthen community organizations and hope to make county life vibrant.” On a final note Gregorwich added. “This isn’t the first time in our community’s or province’s life that we have been on a downswing but we have always come out of it and I think that will happen this time despite our fears at the moment.”
City of Camrose councillor Max Lindstrand offered his insight. 1. “Our province has been very dependent on revenue from oil and gas royalties for many years. This has created difficult challenges for our provincial government. The price of oil has climbed over the past year. Hopefully, this increase will continue on into 2017 which will stimulate the economy resulting in improved employment opportunities. At the local level, as more people are able to secure jobs, the rental and commercial markets will improve and we should see an increase in construction. “Camrose has been somewhat not as affected by the oil downturn as other places such as Red Deer. But the impact has been more recent and the latest statistics for our region show the unemployment rate has climbed over eight per cent. We are not immune from it either.” 2. “Sorry, I have three! Road repair and maintenance was a major emphasis of Council in 2016. My hope
is that we will be able to continue to improve our roads during 2017. This impacts everyone! In 2017, we will see a major project begun as we modernize and enlarge our swimming pool. Finally, we need to continue to improve public transportation options. “I am actually pretty excited with what is happening with public transportation now with the taxi tokens and community bus, helping to meet the needs for people,” 3. “The NDP government was elected during a difficult economic time–low oil prices. It is my view that we should all wish our provincial and federal governments every success. Too often, I hear people blaming our provincial government for matters beyond its control. As the provincial and federal governments succeed, municipalities benefit as well. While the carbon levy is widely unpopular, if the revenue raised is used to reduce our dependence on carbon generated energy, our children and grandchildren will be grateful. “I believe in the science that the climate is changing and that we have to do something about it. Hopefully the provincial government is taking some steps with the carbon levy to addressing the dependance we have on carbon. “I think we do ourselves a disservice if we look for fault and try to blame the government for everything that is happening. If the provincial and federal government fail then the grants will dry up at the municipal level, we really need to be partners and hope for the best.” 4. “It is encouraging to see the plans for celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada! The “kick off” event included the unveiling of the large mural in the Recreation Centre. It was nice to observe the creativity of many residents who contributed to this project by painting one or more of the small tiles. The composite mural is well worth checking out! “I am very pleased to see collaboration between the Bailey and Cargill Theatres. The two theatres are hosting ten shows in the two venues during 2017. An added bonus is that the artists are Canadians from nearly every province in our land. These shows are available to be purchased as six or ten ticket passes. Our family intends to attend as many of these events as possible. These are two examples of fun activities planned for Canada’s special celebration.” 5. When asked about his wish for the New Year, Lindstrand hoped his reply didn’t appear cliche’. “My wish for the New Year is worldwide peace. Furthermore, I wish for progress in addressing world hunger, chronic illnesses, and poverty. It is also
my hope that we recognize that our local community is not free from poverty and that we need to pay attention to the needs of those that have few resources right within our midst.”
Tim Hanson, assistant dean, University of Alberta, Augustana campus External Relations Office provided his views in the following responses. 1. “I’m fairly optimistic about the Alberta economy in 2017, although I think growth will continue to be slow. It’s not likely we will see a return to the boom economy in oil and gas like we saw in the years prior to 2015, although I do anticipate some recovery in 2017. Camrose is not as prone to the sharp ups and downs seen in oil towns around Alberta, so I believe we are likely to continue growing at a steady pace, which is easier to deal with as a community.” 2. “We’ve got it pretty good in Camrose. Whenever we bring guests to visit for their first time, they are always impressed. We have a beautiful city with excellent services, abundant recreational opportunities and a great lifestyle. As for improvements, while I know this is nothing new, more and better employment opportunities for young people should continue to be among our top priorities. I’d also like to see decisions made to increase population density in our city centre, which would enhance our thriving main street and downtown core.” 3. “The NDP were elected in Alberta because people were ready for a change. They are still a relatively new government, and their approach is obviously going to be different than the former PC government, so that’s not a surprise. The perceived success of any government is often not within their own control. It’s often a matter of how well their decisions line up with activities on the national or world stage, and timing is important. So, now it’s a matter of wait and see. The NDP will be judged on their record over this term.” 3. “Augustana has been working with the City and other organizations, and I am proud to be working with my counterparts to arrange for several Canada 150 events. Work started about eight months ago, and the first order of business was to put together a publication with a list of events taking place in our city and surrounding area. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should check it out; it’s going to be a busy year.
There are several activities and events that Augustana will be putting on throughout the year that I will be a part of, and I also serve on the Nordlys Committee that will highlight this theme during our annual film festival.” 5. “I would really appreciate seeing everyone making an effort to treat others with respect. The recent election south of the border raised awareness of a disturbing trend in our society to embrace and participate in rude behavior. It’s fine to have different opinions and perspectives, but we really need to see our differences as an opportunity for further discussion. Rude behavior should never be considered normal.”
Tanya Fox, president of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce shed light onto the subjects from the perspective of a business owner and chamber president. 1. “We are heading back up the hill. I think it is going to be a slow climb. Among Chamber members there is a lot of positivety going into 2017. This is going to be the year of change and people are really rethinking the way they are doing business. We are seeing a lot more collaboration between businesses working together. This is so beneficial in a small centre and especially during a downturn. “It is going to be a slow and a hard climb but most of the business owners are digging their heels in and coming to terms with reality and changing the way they do things to be able to adapt and make it through.” 2. “The most exciting thing that we are hearing a lot of buzz about is the pool. That has been on the minds of residents for so long. I am happy to see the city is moving forward with that and it shows how well they are listening.” Fox commented on the City of Camrose new Director of Community Development and Innovation, Victor Goodman. “He has been fantastic. He is out in the community listening to people and he has an open door policy. He is working well with the chamber and is very interested in our input and what we have to offer. I also understand the city is starting to recruit for the councillors and they want every avenue covered and diversify who is sitting around the table so those decisions reflect all of the community.” Continued to page 8

2017 Kiwanis Top Cop Award The Top Cop Award is a community service project sponsored and coordinated by the Camrose and District Kiwanis Club, along with the cooperation of the Camrose Police Service (CPS). This award is presented annually in recognition of an individual officer’s commitment towards going above and beyond his/her duties as a member of the CPS. Typically, a worthy nominee would set high standards for volunteering at community events, working with sports-related and other Camrose organizations, and devoting personal time towards a variety of causes within our city. The general public, any of our local clubs and organizations, as well as the CPS are invited to submit nominations for members of our Police Service. Nominations are received and judged by the members of the Camrose and District Kiwanis Club. The club relies upon the Chief of Police to confirm the accuracy of nomination criteria. The final decision on each year’s Top Cop Award is made solely by the members of the Kiwanis Club, but we greatly value input from the community. The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club applauds the efforts of our Police Service in both their professional and their volunteer service to our community.
TO NOMINATE A TOP COP: Pick up an application form at the local UPS Store at 6010-48 Avenue Or from any Camrose Kiwanis member by emailing camrosekiwanis@gmail.com Deadline for nominations is February 3, 2017.

Mayor reflects on looking back and moving forward By Lori Larsen Looking back on 2016 Mayor Norm Mayer reflected on some of the ups and downs the City of Camrose experienced and commented on what is in store in the year to come.
with the public and it was something we didn’t have a choice on because the service providers would no longer do manual pickup because of injury claims for their workers.” Looking ahead
City successes
“One of the things that the city achieved that received a fair amount of compliments was our implementation of the roads rehab program,” commented Mayor Mayer. “It is the beginning of a 10-year rehab program where we are budgeting $3 million a year.” The rehab program entails upgrading the existing roads in Camrose to higher standards. “The roads have been allowed to deteriorate, quite badly in lots of areas,” said Mayer. “So we are hitting the high traffic areas to begin with, the ones in the most need of repair.” Mayer explained how the roads were tested using technology to specifically determine the sustainability and life cycle of the roads. “One of the other things we worked on was coordinating some of our feelings and thoughts on the Blue Dot Program, which I think was well received by a segment of the community. Basically the things we included were things we were doing anyway but we formalized the position.” Mayer referred to the installation of solar panels on the Recreation arena roof as a positive move towards not only saving dollars for energy costs but also decreasing the carbon footprint and displacing 700 tonnes of CO2. “We are also giving consideration to other potential buildings, the City Hall being one, and some more work on the Community Centre arena once we know the roof structure is adequate. “Another thing it was nice to see the community
Mayor Norm Mayer offers his insight on the past year and what is in store for 2017.
get behind was the setting up of the volunteer evacuation site for residents of Fort McMurray who had the misfortune of being forced out during the Wood Buffalo fires. “We are such a caring community in that regard and it was nice to see everybody put their shoulder to the wheel, so to speak and make things happen. “We (City) are trying to put a positive spin on our service to customers and we have come a long way in that regard. The crew at City Hall and other locations throughout Camrose have stepped up to provide a level of service that people and council could be proud of.” Some concerns
Regarding any issues in 2016 Mayor Mayer indicated the following. “The thing that caused us the most concern in 2016 was the economy. While we probably didn’t get hit as hard as some communities, because our dependance on oil and gas development is not as high as some areas it has affected unemploy-
ment in the steel plant and the coating plant operations.” Mayer added that the steel plant did experience a reduced level and a period of shut down. “They have called some back to work and it is nice to see that happen.” He did mention, however, the announcement of the pipeline going across from Hardisty area may not have a great impact (boom)on this area because the pipes required for the project are already in stockpile. “One of the other initiatives that we implemented in 2016 where we were concerned on how it would be received was the inauguration of the automated pickup system for residential garbage.” Mayer did mention concerns from some people living in concentrated areas of not needing so many bins, but explained that deciding where to place only a few bins in those areas might also cause concerns. “Overall I think it has gone over fairly well
Sharing perspectives of 2017 Continued from page 4
3. “The Alberta chambers is very good at sending report cards out to the provincial government on what their platforms are, what they have accomplished and what they need to. I am hoping they will take a harder look at that, because it is the voice of business and our membership straight across Alberta. I would like to see them sit back and look at where we are now today and reflect on what has happened over that last year and make some changes. A lot has changed since their initial platform. So going forward their views need to change with that as well. Alberta chambers will continue to work very closely with them and offer them advice and perspective from the business community to help give them a more rounded view when they are out searching for those answers.” 4. “We are trying to incorporate the 150 celebration into all the events that we do,” said Fox. “For example Jaywalkers and BVJ parade in the 25th year. We will be available
to offer the information to the businesses and help with promotions.” 5. “From the perspective of the Chamber we have a new executive and board and there are going to be a lot of great ideas and changes, whether that is revamping or updating such as our website. We want the website to be more interactive for our members. In 2016 we started a social media committee to be out in that aspect more and promote more what is going on with our members. “We are hoping to offer more affordable education for our members. Whether that be webinars or educational seminars that help businesses to succeed. We are trying to make it reasonable so members can come out. And we will continue with collaborations of businesses and helping out and working closely with the One Less Trip and the Cash Mob initiatives to help put more money back into the economy. I think it will be an exciting year.”
When asked what aspirations the city had for the year ahead Mayer replied. “We are always working to create employment and my New Year’s wish would be to attract some industries in the professional and environmental areas that do not necessarily have to be in a big city because most business can be accomplished on a computer. I’d like to see us (City) create an environment that would lead those types of businesses to locate here.” Mayer said this being the first year the city has prepared a two year budget, they endeavoured to keep tax increases to a minimum all the while providing the same level of service and include four major projects. The projects include the bridge over 48th Avenue, renovation and addition to the swimming pool, public works building and the waste water treatment plant. “Part of the 48th Avenue Bridge Project is to increase the grade level to 51 Street,” added Mayer. “This will hopefully reduce the hazards of winter driving and as a spin off there will be enough clearance underneath the roadway to put in a pedestrian walkway tying the walking paths together, which is very important in Camrose. It will also help traffic at 51 Street, where pedestrians now have to push the button to stop the traffic to cross 48th Avenue. “The swimming pool that has been asked for and worked at for years is now moving forward with the building of an addition basically for lane swimming, which will make it a competitive pool again as well as some additional space for play areas and possibly a slide. The existing pool will be fully renovated as well and it will become more of a mom and tot pool so the temperatures can be brought up to be more comfortable. “This will necessitate the movement of the spray park to some extent but it will be put back into operation as soon as possible.” Mayer said the planning for the pool is slated to happen in 2017 and the construction in 2018. Mayer indicated the third major project included work with the Public Works building and the fourth project is the upgrade to the waste water treatment plant. “This is the big one,” he said. “It has a $40 million
cost factor. The planning will take place in 2017 and the construction in 2018 and 2019.” Mayer expressed, “All of that is frightening dollar amounts, but by utilizing grants that we have had and reserves that have been put into place by the present day citizens we will only need to borrow $13 million for the waste water treatment plant and we have adequate funding in our utility bills to cover those payments.” Mayer noted that it is important to spend these funds (reserves) to not only help the economy move forward but to provide the services to the residents who helped put that money aside. “All four of these major projects that are presently planned we can move ahead on without having an impact on the tax dollars. “The City of Camrose is financially still solid and we have budgeted some protection for the carbon tax because we really have no idea on how it will affect the city. We do know it will affect costs associated in the operation of our equipment and buildings.” Celebrating in 2017
Mayer spoke about celebrating the year to come. “We kicked off Canada 150 on Jan. 1. I was pleased to see the amount of participation from the people who came out and also the participation of the people who worked on the mural. “This year will be full of activities for celebration including the windup on Dec. 31.” He also mentioned the busy year ahead in Camrose arts and culture. “The Bailey Theatre and Lougheed Performing Arts Centre are working together to put on a series of events. One month will be at the Bailey and then the Performing Arts Centre will take the next month. Both venues are working together to bring the best level of arts and culture that is available to our community. We (city) are very pleased with that collaboration.” Camrose strong
On a final note Mayor Mayer spoke about what sets Camrose apart from other communities. “The people who live here,” he smiled.” “Camrose has a culture of a giving community. Whenever it is necessary the citizens provide a bit of a stabilizing influence. As a city we work hard at providing a safe and healthy community with the protection where it is needed and will survive to be a community where people will be happy to move to and live in.”

Celebrate 150th By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot
How are you celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday? 2017 is finally here. Are you a teenager at least 14 years old? Are you a parent with any teenagers 14 or over? Do you teach school to students in Grades 9 to 12? Do you lead a youth group or sports club? If you are, or know students, youth group members or players and enjoy travelling; meeting motivated and inspiring people, sharing ideas with others, then, Experiences Canada150&Me is for you. Experiences Canada is a Signature Canada 150 Initiative offering an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young Canadians to join in a national conversation about Canada and the future of our country. Experiences Canada 150&Me is hosting a unique series of regional forums for young people to be held across Canada in the spring of 2017 culminating in Ottawa the week before Canada Day. Participants will have a chance to travel to Winnipeg, Vancouver, Montreal, or Halifax for a week-long visit filled with action, conversations, tours and community engagement activities. Canada 150&Me starts by inviting Canadian youth to answer the simple question, “What is the greatest challenge or opportunity facing Canada for your generation?” They can reply online using whatever creative media they choose – video, music, written word, or visual art. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 1. The 150&Me will involve thousands of students in a conversation about Canada’s future and allow young people to take a leadership role in celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday around topics and themes that mean the most to Canadians. A leadership group of 150 students representing all of the regional forums will travel to Ottawa from June 27 to July 2 to present their findings to government, business, and community leaders and to participate as volunteers throughout the week in Canada’s 150th celebrations. So, let’s get our young folk in Battle River-Crowfoot writing, performing, creating or producing. Let’s ensure they have the chance to join in this year’s sesquicentennial celebrations. Making Camrose greener By Lori Larsen
The Camrose Green Action Committee (GAC) has a mandate to educate Camrose residents on the importance of sustaining a greener, cleaner and healthier city. Green Action Committee chair Gordon Lougheed presented an update to council during the committee of whole meeting held on Nov. 21. “We (GAC) are looking at several ways of communicating to the public on recommendations (for a greener city),” said Lougheed. Lougheed suggested that some of the methods of communicating with residents would entail a newspaper insert outlining specific recommendations for reducing, recycling and reusing as well as posting these recommendations on the city website and distributing plastic lids to fit onto small cans used to store household grease “The most important part of the green action is to educate the public and the councillors on the ways that the City of Camrose could be greening.” Some of the recommendations Lougheed referred to include composting and reducing mowing. “A lawn mower operating for one hour is the equivalent of a car driving 300 kms.” Other recommendations were reducing water, chemical and energy usage and reducing vehicle idling time. “There are people who walk and bike to bring their children to school and it is very annoying with the amount of vehicles that are idling in front of the schools and creating a hazard for the children walking through. Lougheed concluded by noting that it is important to encourage all citizens to put green into action and that deeds really do count more than words.

August 26, 1922 ~ January 1, 2017 Gordon Harold Simonson of Camrose, Alberta passed away on Sunday January 1, 2017 at the age of 94 years. Gordon was born on August 26, 1922 in Edmonton and was the fourth of nine children born to pioneer farmers Oscar and Hilda Simonson – five boys and four girls. They lived on a farm two miles northeast of Kingman. Gordon left the farm when he was 18 years old and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he was until the end of the Second World War. He was stationed on Prince Edward Island and was scheduled to leave for the battlefields in Europe when the war ended in 1945. At the end of the war, he briefly trained with the RCMP and then started working for the Canadian National Railway as a conductor. During this period, he met Ruth Johnson and they married in April, 1947. Together they raised three children. Gordon and Ruth initially lived in Edmonton and then in 1952, they decided to go farming. They moved to the Albonas Johnson farm, seven miles west of Kingman. Albonas was Ruth’s stepfather and Albonas had homesteaded the farm in the 1920s. Gordon and Ruth’s life revolved around the farm, but Gordon always took time to enjoy sports for himself and with his children. Gordon initially played hardball for Kingman, then transferred to the Miquelon softball team where he played against his son Bryan. After his playing days, he coached several ball teams, but is best known in the sporting community as an umpire. If you played ball in the Kingman/Hay Lakes area in the 1980s, you probably remember Gordon for his loud voice and no-nonsense umping. When Gordon decided to retire from farming in 1986, he rented his land to son-in-law Blaine Rosland, but continued to live on the farm. It was then that Gordon’s love for nature flourished, and he manicured his yard so that it was like a park. He had the time, energy and passion to plant more trees, cut the grass, rake the leaves, feed the squirrels and birds, and prune the trees. Gordon also had another passion when he retired, and that was to go to Camrose and have coffee with the “coffee group” – and this sometimes happened more than once a day. In 2004, Ruth’s health was failing and they decided to sell the farm to their grandson Shane and son-in-law Blaine Rosland. They moved to Camrose and lived in a seniors’ apartment for five years and then moved to Stoney Creek Lodge where Ruth could get more help. Ruth passed away in 2010. Gordon moved to the Louise Jensen Care Facility in 2014. Gordon is survived and lovingly remembered by his family of three children, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three sisters, many nieces, nephews and in-laws, plus his many friends. His children include Bryan (Linda) Simonson, Brenda (Blaine) Rosland and Robin Simonson. His grandchildren include Kari (Chris Robertson) Simonson, Kelly (Livio Porcellato) Simonson, Shane Rosland, Heather (Ryan) Lapp, Cameron Samoisette, Jesselee Beauparlant, Robert, Greg and Paul Raynor and Shalyn Sabine. His great-grandchildren include Seth and Norah Robertson, William Star and Terry Anne Lapp. His sisters include Alvina Louch, Helen (Doug) Webb and Bernadine (Ed) Glandsman. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Ruth Simonson; daughter Betty Gaudet; sister Verna Gawlicki; and brothers Alfred, Clifford, Donald and Ken Simonson. A Funeral Service was held on Monday January 9, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Eriksson officiating. October 3, 1935 ~ January 4, 2017 Calvin Edward Ross of Camrose (formerly of Forestburg, Alberta) passed away on January 4, 2017 at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife Leona; his daughters Candice (Jonathan) and Stacey of Calgary; and two grandchildren Charlotte and Elliot. Also left to cherish his memory are his sisters Vesta, Grace, Blanche (Clarence) and Shirley (Allan); his brother Earl (Marge); and other family Duanne, Darcy, Michael (Sylvia), Joan (Harvey), Carol; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Tabor and Lottie; and siblings Charles, Gladys, Eunice and Harold. Calvin was born on the farm near Heisler. He received his education at Hastings Coulee, Forestburg and Vermilion College of Agriculture. Upon completion of his education, he returned to the farm and also worked at a job building the first power plant near Forestburg. Later, he took a job as Farm Director for CFCW. However, his heart remained in farming, and he returned to the family home. On August 15, 1964, he married Leona Jahns, and they raised two girls. Calvin farmed until he retired in 2000. In 2008, he and Leona moved to Camrose where they resided up to his passing. Calvin was a born athlete and loved basketball. He coached a high school girls’ team and played on a senior men’s team. Later in his life, Calvin was avidly involved in the curling and golf clubs of Forestburg and Camrose. One of Calvin’s fondest loves was his horses. He was active in Gymkhana and show horse events, but what gave Calvin the most joy was riding in his pasture, checking his cows. Calvin also spent many years in leadership roles with the Hasting’s Coulee 4-H Beef Club. In recent years, Calvin spent many hours in volunteering for the Camrose Kodiaks and Habitat for Humanity. He and Leona also enjoyed their involvement with the Camrose & District Senior Society. In respect of Calvin’s wishes, no service will be held. Please direct any memorial donations given in Calvin’s name directly to the charities listed: Hematology/Oncology Research & Education Fund, Foothills Hospital, Room 681, 1403-29 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 2T9 or Kaye Edmonton Clinic, 11400 University Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 1Z1. April 29, 1942 ~ December 22, 2016 Carol Marjorie Finley (Mitchell) passed away peacefully in St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, Alberta on December 22, 2016 at the age of 74 years. Carol was born April 29, 1942 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Carol was an only child, grew up on a farm near La Riviere, Manitoba, and was a hard-working farm girl. Carol shared lots of stories of driving tractor, tossing hay bales and swimming in the creek. She was also a good athlete, excelling in high jump, baseball and curling, to name a few. Carol made friends easily and was born sociable! She enjoyed innumerable friendships as a youth and carried many of those precious friendships throughout her life. Carol married her very best friend, Ross Finley, on April 21, 1962 in Manitou, Manitoba. Shortly thereafter, the young couple moved to Edmonton where they resided for a short time, with a final move to Camrose in 1962. Carol and Ross started a family right away, Wayne James was born in 1963 and Karen Lee was born in 1966. Being the modern, independent woman – long before it was fashionable – along with raising the family, Carol worked outside the home in the accounting department of the Camrose School District. Later, she worked alongside Ross managing the accounting for their business, Finley Masonry 1980 Ltd. Carol certainly enjoyed her work with the school district, but working alongside Ross made them both the happiest. As the family was growing, Carol was an active member of the Moose Lodge and the United Church and, of course, supporting her children in their various school activities and sport teams. After the kids left home, Carol’s available time and dedication to volunteering with organizations like Citizen Advocacy, Festival of Trees, United Church Women and Meals on Wheels grew to such a degree that she received the Volunteer of the Year award in recognition of her incredible volunteer commitment. Beyond volunteering for her community, Carol loved to travel, visiting over 30 countries! Carol is predeceased by her husband Ross (1990); and continues to be celebrated by her son Wayne, wife Michelle and granddaughter Kelty; and Carol’s daughter Karen, husband Tyler, grandson Kaison and granddaughter Macy; and by many great friends in Camrose and the surrounding community. We are not entirely sure what the world will be like without Carol in it … but it will certainly be less interesting. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017 from Camrose United Church with Rev. Brian Hunter and Rev. Liz Carter-Morgan officiating. Inurnment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Battle River Community Foundation, Camrose Citizen Advocacy Legacy Fund. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson In times of hardship
East Central Alberta faces tough times right now. That was in my mind as, last weekend, I read (finally!) a family history book created by my Aunt Doris Campbell in 2009. I’m still recovering. ***
My maternal grandmother was the daughter of parents from London England. At age 20 months, she arrived in Ontario in 1904 after long journey via ship and train. In 1907, they travelled by train to Wetaskiwin. For a young couple from London with no farming experience and no resources, it was nearly impossible to eke out a living. My grandmother told Aunt Doris that they lived one winter exclusively on wild rabbit which her dad was able to shoot. My maternal grandfather was one of 11 children who arrived with his parents from Nebraska in 1905. My great grandfather was able to purchase a quarter section near Bittern Lake. The house was one room downstairs and one room upstairs (about a 16 x 20 foot frame building) with a small shanty style porch–this for the family of 13. One year later, my great-grandfather dropped dead of a heart attack, leaving my great-grandmother with eleven children aged two to 19. One winter, their only cow fell through the ice, broke her leg and had to be destroyed. That meant no milk. The chickens didn’t lay eggs in the cold chicken coop. Obtaining food was a major challenge. They went into one winter with $5, which they used to buy flour, salt and gun powder. ***
So what does this have to do with January 2017? East Central Alberta is having a tough time. The two major bases of our economy–agriculture and petroleum–are in the tank. Boom and bust is a fact of life about Alberta’s resource-based economy; farming and oil have had tough times before. But for the first time in my living memory, both are in the tank at the same time. Last fall’s weather was especially devastating for farmers who couldn’t get their crops off before the Thanksgiving weekend snowfall. “Weather” has been a farming hazard for millennia so that’s not new. But other factors affecting today’s agriculture–like who controls the market; increasing expenses of production with no control over eventual income–those factors have been challenging for a while and don’t look like going away any time soon. The forces underlying petroleum’s collapse don’t look like they’ll change soon either. Actions by countries in the Middle East are depressing prices right now, but that’s just one of many factors that make me skeptical about whether “oil will come back.” There’s a straight line between the health (or ill health) of agriculture and petroleum and the retail businesses in our city, towns and villages. It’s heartbreaking to see local farms and businesses scale back or even go down. You know that behind every shutdown there’s a painful story of someone’s dreams, and hard work and hard money. I know there’s a climate of worry and discouragement. That triggers anger and looking for someone to blame (yep, I think most of us start in that unholy place). Any grounds for hope? I don’t know. But here’s what I thought as I read stories of my ancestors. Whatever hardship our corner of the world is experiencing now, our ancestors had it worse.

One cold morning in November my spouse and I woke up to a cold house and our 25-year-old furnace had stopped working. We received very prompt service from J Heating and Sheet Metal, and had a new one installed. I contacted both Kevin Sorenson and Bruce Hinkley about possible government rebates for energy efficient furnaces. I received a prompt response from Mr. Sorenson with several suggestions, but despite follow ups with Mr. Hinkley, not a word in response. Members of parliament/legislature should attend to the needs of their constituents and it is obvious who does this locally. Hinkley is probably too busy kicking Albertans when they are down with additional taxes. Shame on him. Jim Orr, Camrose Government mistake
Looks like the NDP did it again. You must have seen
all the ads on television. “The Alberta Government is working for the citizens of Alberta, creating jobs and cleaning up the environment!” Do you remember last summer, the NDP was reviewing the Motor Transportation renewal notices to all operator licences and licence plates? They outsourced the job and hired a company from the United States to make phone calls and send out emails to all operators and licence holders prior to their renewal dates. Now that’s creating Alberta jobs! To say the least, this was probably the worst decision they could have made and so proudly announced. I didn’t see any Albertan’s going back to work with this decision which was later retracted. Now; I must ask for transparency on this transaction. Was there a penalty we as taxpayers paid for cancelling the contract with the US corporation? As an Albertan who does not agree with the Carbon Tax being forced on its residents, I do not agree with the payments made from the Provincial Government to the Canadian Revenue Agency to the Alberta resident. You heard it right! The Alberta government has hired Revenue Canada to distribute the Carbon Tax refunds. This is going to cost the Alberta residents additional cash as there will be administration costs attributed to this action. Why was
this outsourced again? No Alberta jobs created again. The NDP keeps bragging about all the jobs they are creating, what about the jobs they have reduced in Alberta by implementing their policies and; considering the future; reducing jobs further by their cutbacks and plant shut downs and ridiculous tax implementation on the coal users. To tax a coal user for his/her use of stoker coal by 73 per cent is retarded. This may well force our small coal mines out of business. I don’t consider this as working for the Alberta taxpayers, would you? Weyburn, Saskatchewan has developed and installed a Carbon Capture Program at their coal fired power plant. This system reduced the carbon output less than a natural gas power plant. Who would have thought that it would be a good idea to review this and start to install this process on our power plants instead of forcing them out of business and costing the Alberta taxpayers extra monies cancelling contracts between the power processing companies and the Alberta government. This will be reflected on our future power bills, I understand. It never rains, it just pours with this NDP government. Rodger Banack, Camrose

I don’t think any of us faces actual food shortage or freezing in a sod hut. None of us is without a way to communicate with others who might help. Few of us have taken the kind of risk our ancestors took when they loaded a wagon or got on a train and headed west. We are descendants of those hardy souls. It’s in our genes to overcome tough problems. Reading their stories gives me hope that we descendants can master the unique challenges we’ve created, just as they survived the challenges they couldn’t have predicted they were taking on when they decided to head west. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

Nordlys Festival set for Bailey
Show and Dance Band
By Murray Green
The Nordlys Film and Arts Festival returns for its eighth year from Feb. 17 to 19. A lineup of award-winning films, guest filmmakers and musicians are set for the historic Bailey Theatre. In addition to an exciting slate of international films, Nordlys is proud to celebrate Canada 150 with a sampling of short documentaries produced by Alberta filmmakers, some of whom will be in attendance at the festival. “Canada has a very strong and diverse film community,” said Richard Bruneau, a festival board member. “And Canada’s 150th birthday is a perfect opportunity to showcase talent from right here in Alberta and beyond.” Nordlys Film Festival weekend passes are available at a lower rate before Jan. 15. On Friday night, we will be viewing Pawn Sacrifice (based on the true story of chess prodigy Bobby Fischer) and are thrilled to have Dale Johnson, the executive producer of the film and former Camrosian, in attendance for a question and answer period. Dale is recognized as one of the most active financiers in independent film today and his recent project, Lost City of Z directed by James Gray and starring Charlie Hunnam recently had its world premiere as the closing night screening at the 2016 New York Film Festival. Dale will be in attendance to kick off the festival with his film Pawn Sacrifice directed by Academy Award winner Ed Zwick and starring Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard. The film tells the story of American chess prodigy Bobby Fisher and his tumultuous role within superpower rivalries at the height of the Cold War. “It’s an incredible opportunity for Nordlys to have a special guest like Dale Johnson,” said local filmmaker and Nordlys devotee, Hans Olson. “It’s not often that an audience can watch a film with the magnitude of Pawn Sacrifice, then engage in conversation with the producer once the credits have rolled.” Dale was born and raised in Camrose, where he attended CCHS and Augustana. He moved to the United States in 2003 with his wife and fellow Camrosian, Erika Hoveland. The Saturday night concert this year will feature Calgary singer and songwriter Michael Bernard Fitzgerald,

The first step to getting healthier is seeking out the right information for you. Workshops offer safe, effective strategies to keep pounds under control. The program is open to residents 17 years of age and older. (Family members and supporters are welcome to attend. However, the workshops are not recommended for pregnant women.) Begin by exercising more and ultimately losing weight. The two really do go hand in hand but the benefits of exercise reach far beyond weight loss. The body was meant to be in motion and living a sedentary lifestyle (one
that lacks regular amounts of physical activity) can lead to depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, some cancers, high cholesterol, decrease in skeletal muscle mass, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Continued on page 21

The concept of locally owned and operated drug stores and pharmacies is certainly dwindling across North America. A significant percentage of prescriptions are now filled by giant business conglomerates out of grocery stores, or by courier companies.
WE’RE DIFFERENT! • After 68 years you will still find us on main street! • We’ve grown, too – our second location adjoins the Smith Clinic. • Our approach is still the same too: all the time you need and want to learn about your prescription from patient-focused pharmacists. • You can count on us for a wide range of health supplies, as well as an impressive assortment of consumer merchandise. • We are locally owned and operated.

Statistics show the influenza vaccination does work By Lori Larsen
The debate over whether or not to get an influenza immunization still goes on today, but with the flu season heavy upon us the statistics more or less speak for themselves; it does work. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), getting the flu vaccination can reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization, including among children and older adults. A study published in the summer of 2016 showed that people 50 years and older who got a flu vaccine reduced their risk of getting hospitalized from flu by 57 per cent. Flu vaccinations have also been shown to
be associated with reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes (79 per cent) and chronic lung disease (52 per cent). A study that looked at flu vaccine effectiveness in pregnant women found that vaccination reduced the risk of flu-associated acute respiratory infection by about one half. There are studies that show that flu vaccine in a pregnant woman can reduce the risk of flu illness in her baby by up to half. This protective benefit was observed for up to four months after birth. In most cases when people who did receive the flu vaccination got sick it made the illness milder and shorter lived.

Other statistics provided by Alberta Health Services indicated that as of Dec. 10, 2016 there have been more than 774 lab confirmed influenza cases in Alberta and 5,323 people with flu-like symptoms have been reported. Of those cases 189 required hospitalization. Everybody is at risk of contracting influenza. To lessen your chance, minimize your symptoms and protect those around you it is not too late to receive a flu shot, which is free of charge to any Albertan (over the age of six months old). Alyvia Teigan Kearns was the first 2017 baby born at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose on Jan. 1. Proud parents Meghan and Rob Kearns were not planning a New Year’s baby. “We were told by the doctor that the baby was due on Jan. 3, so she was two days early,” said Meghan. “The staff at St. Mary’s Hospital told us she was the first baby of the year.” Alyvia came into the world at seven pounds, 12 ounces on New Year’s day at 2:53 p.m. and was 19.5 inches in length. Eating healthier. Choosing foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains and foods rich in Omega-3 fats such as nuts and fish can lower your risk of depression and
improve your overall state of happiness while protecting you against disease. Reduce your stress. While stress is a part of everyday life reducing it by enjoying more relaxation, socializing and getting quality sleep can keep the
negative affects of stress at bay. Get quality sleep. Lack of sleep is linked to increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes, but it can also contribute to drastic mood swings and eventual depression. Get out and travel more.

Even if it is just a day long road trip around your Camrose and area, getting out and changing the scenery rejuvenates you and helps to improve your perspective. Adventure is good for the soul and can provide fun all the while learning something. Socialize more. Maybe it
is a trip to the store where you meet and greet people or a long overdue telephone conversation with a friend or family member. Strong social ties are associated with longer lifespans. Research shows relationships make us stronger, healthier and happier. Continued on page 22

If you smoke make every effort to quit. Never stop trying even if you have failed to quit in the past testimonials from quiters indicated that multiple attempts more often than not lead to final success. It can not only save money but your life as well. Take time to volunteer. You will not only improve your own outlook but you will improve the quality of life for the people and organizations you chose to help. The old adage is true, happiness really is contagious. Never stop learning. Learning can improve your memory, boost your confidence and increase your marketability. Signing up for a night course at your local university or college is not only a fun way to meet new people and get you out of the house but a wonderful way to improve your self image. You are never to old to learn something new. These are just a few resolutions that, if taken on with the vigor of that new relationship and with the promise to work at making it work, has the potential to lead you to a happier, healthier and more productive 2017 and beyond.
BRCF assists minor sports programs The Battle River Community Foundation awarded grants totalling $12,400 to the City of Camrose to support minor sports programs in Camrose. The grants are from income from Lions Club of Camrose Legacy Fund and the Zetsen Master Builders Minor Sports Fund. The Lions Club of Camrose Legacy Fund supports projects, including minor sports, that were supported by the Lions Club of Camrose before it dissolved in 2009. The Zetsen Master Builders Minor Sports Fund was one of three created from the proceeds of a “charity build” undertaken by Zetsen Master Builders and their sub trades and suppliers. Both funds are intended to increase the opportunity for children to participate in sports. These grants were directed to the Help Fund, which is available to assist with participation costs for Camrose children in both sport and cultural activities. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects and programs, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Welcoming 2017 with arts, culture, indoor and outdoor fun
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The City of Camrose welcomed 2017 with a fun filled family day on Jan. 1 at the Camrose Recreation Centre beginning with the unveiling of the Camrose Community Mosaic Mural. Insert, Mayor Norm Mayer, left, was joined by, left to right, Camrose Arts Society executive director Jane Cherry-Lemire, Anna Poole, city councillors Agnes Hoveland, Max Lindstrand, Kevin Hycha and Bill Sears for the official unveiling.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster For those who didn’t want to go out in the cold temperatures during the Jan. 1 Canada 150 Celebration Kick-off held at the Camrose Recreation Centre, there were plenty of indoor activities to keep children occupied including this oversized game of X’s and O’s that two-year-old Kyna Jensen was trying.
The Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club served up a hearty breakfast to attendees at the City of Camrose New Years Day, Canada 150 Celebration kick-off. Shelby Bianic, left, thanked Larry Sharuga, centre and Bruce Thompson for the plate of eggs, sausage and pancakes.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Two-year-old Grady Green held on steady as he took part in the free skating at the EnCana Arena.
Terry Doucette and four-year-old daughter Evelynn took advantage of the free skating offered by the city as part of the New Years Day 150 Celebrations Kick-off that took place on Jan. 1 at the Camrose Recreation Centre.
Taking on the persona of a Cheetah was perfect for sevenyear-old Rylea Rafuse who had her face painted by Tracy Fontaine of Wackadoodle Designs. This was one of the activities for little ones to partake in, offered by the City of Camrose during the New Year’s Day Kick-off to Canada’s 150 Birthday Celebration.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The weather outside was a bit frightful but the allure of being driven around by a team of four beautiful horses had people climbing aboard the wagon. Foss Irwin of Wetaskiwin provided participants with a wonderful winter ride.

F-150 Series trucks Built for hauling By Murray Green
If you demand a truck that gets the job done, the redesigned Ford 2017 F-150 truck at Lamb Ford Sales is it. The future of tough is here, so you can get the most from your truck. It all starts with a cab and box fabricated from high-strength, military grade, aluminum alloys. This generation is up to 700 pounds (317 kg) lighter than the previous one, resulting in better fuel efficiency, greater towing and payload capacities, impressive power-to-weight ratio for faster acceleration, enhanced handling and brake responsiveness. It can also deliver best-in-class payload. It also offers capability with no compromise on ride, handling and braking and features that redefine the cab and pickup box. “F-150 offers 12,200-lb. (5,533 kg) maximum tow rating with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. Other highlights include class-exclusive available Pro Trailer Backup Assist, an available 8-inch Productivity Screen, available Dynamic Hitch Assist (included with the rear view and 360 cameras) and available Smart Trailer Tow Connector,” said sales consultant James Larson. “F-150 also features standard Trailer Sway Control and available Trailer

Brake Controller (TBC), plus available BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Trailer Tow.” The 2017 F-150 is more than just a capable heavyduty Ford pickup. This allnew truck exceeds in maximum payload, as well as in conventional and fifth-wheel/ gooseneck towing. The 3.5L EcoBoost delivers best-in-class torque for a V6 engine, beating out its gasoline- and diesel-powered competitors. All-new turbochargers deliver more boost thanks to improved twin turbos and a lighter turbine wheel. “The available integrated tailgate step makes it easier to
access all of the payload the F-150 can carry,” said Larson. “Step and handle stow inside the tailgate and can be easily accessed when needed.” Whether you’re a towing novice or a seasoned pro, available Pro Trailer Backup Assist complements your skills, and simplifies backing up a trailer with the turn of a knob. Simply rotate the knob left or right in the direction you want the trailer to go, and let the knob return to centre to straighten the trailer back out. Less time and stress backing up trailers means more time

for work and play. Enjoy smart hardware and software with an easy-toread color touchscreen, experience quick reactions to your commands; capacitive touchscreen features impressive responsiveness such as the convenient swipe feature; talk with real-world voice commands; locate your favourite restaurants with simple destination entry via the optional navigation and bring the power of Siri eyes free and your iPhone into your vehicle. F-150 offers 31 safetyrelated innovations. Safety
starts with the fully boxed frame featuring eight crossmembers made of up to 78 percent high-strength steel. There’s an advanced restraint system with dual-stage air bags and available inflatable rear seat belts in super crew models. Safety belt pretensioners added to the belt anchor side further secure the lap belt around front-seat passengers. The available live-drive Power Takeoff (PTO) provision with Mobile Mode lets you power an aftermarket snow plow, pump, compressor or other accessory. And the big news: PTO provision is now available with the 6.2L gas engine as well as the 6.7L turbo diesel (F-250 and F-350 models). PTO provision is integrated into the torqshift transmission, reducing the time needed for seasonal upfit changes. An output gear connects directly to the engine crankshaft to power your PTO anytime the engine is running, whether the truck is in motion or stopped. Another big feature is “split-shaft” capability (diesel only) that allows multiple accessories to operate at the same time when the truck is stopped. You can see the 2017 Ford F-150 trucks at Lamb Ford Sales on Highway 13 East Camrose. Phone 780-672-2411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Erratic driver crossed the centre line several times December 30
A snowmobile was stolen from a shop on Township Rd 461 near Range Road 210. The snowmobile was later recovered after the suspect left it abandoned. This matter is under investigation. Police were called to a residence on Range Road 203 near Twp 453 after owners
caught two people inside their shop at 1:15 a.m. The suspects left when complainant turned the yard lights on. Suspects left prior to police arrival in a white dodge truck, crew cab, short box. December 29
Police received a complaint of an erratic driver after crossing the centre line
several times and nearly colliding with oncoming traffic. The vehicle was located and a 69-year-old male was issued a 24-hour driver licence suspension due to fatigue. Police want to remind the public to refrain from driving while fatigued. Police attended a residence in Hay Lakes to mediate a neighbour dispute. Neighbours
had a disagreement in regards to parking on the street and the verbal altercation led to alleged threats. Police spoke with parties involved and mediated the situation. Camrose RCMP and the Bawlf Fire Department responded to the report of an abandoned vehicle on fire. The vehicle was determined to be
stolen from the City of Camrose on Dec. 10. If you have any information regarding any of the above mentioned incidents that may lead to an arrest, please contact your local RCMP detachment at 780-672-3342 during business hours or Crime Stoppers Tips at 1-800-222-8477.
Starke visits Camrose during PC leadership race By Murray Green
Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Richard Starke stopped in Camrose to seek support in his bid for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta on Jan. 4. In March, a new leader will be voted into the position that was left vacant when former premier Jim Prentice resigned. “I have a deep and abiding love for the province. I have a sense of responsibility to the province and making it as good as we possibly can,” said MLA Starke on his decision to run for the leadership. “I’ve been a lifelong member of the PC party and proud of its legacy. I’m a sitting member and I think it is important that those with skills and talents step forward and offer their skills for leadership.” Starke grew up in Edmonton, became a veterinarian and started his business in Lloydminster. “It is difficult to watch what has been built following a certain set of values and principles that are held by most Albertans largely reversed and dismantled by the current government,” he said at
Richard Starke in Camrose
the Bill Fowler Centre. “We are a fiscal responsible province that pays its own way. We don’t incur mountains of debt to pass on to future generations. We have been a place that entrepreneurship and businesses have been welcome. Now we see businesses being vilified. It is driving businesses and
billions of dollars from our province.” Interim leader Rick McIvor is in a challenging position and doing the best that he can, Starke pointed out. “It’s not easy going from a party in power for over four decades to being the third party in the legislature with
a caucus of less than 10 members. That is challenging.” MLA Starke sees an advantage coming from a rural riding and being a current member at the legislature. “I engage with rural constitutes and rural people want to know that the leader understands rural Alberta and I have demonstrated that I do,” said Starke. “I also understand the challenges of urban centres because I served two terms on the Lloydminster city council.” The leadership will be decided in March. “After March 18, we need to get to work right away in rebuilding our party, setting policy and moving forward. I think we have time to do that. What we don’t have time for is asking the PC and Wildrose parties to destroy themselves to merge together. We simply don’t have time,” he said. “There are no quick fixes.” Starke is the only leadership candidate that currently has a seat in the legislature. “That is important to start the rebuild right away. My advantage is that I already have a seat. If the leader doesn’t have a seat then we need to have a
by-election and that is never a guarantee.” He wants to do what is best for all Albertans. “I also believe in taking the best ideas, regardless of what party they comes from, and work together to make this a better province. I don’t believe in voting against something just because we didn’t come up with the idea.” He also wants to provide respectful, inclusive, appropriate and effective supports to all vulnerable Albertans who require them, be they children, seniors or anyone facing discrimination of any kind. “It is incredibly important that we have sound policies, strong leadership and something that will inspire Albertans again with a strong and hopeful vision for our province,” said Starke. “We want solutions for our challenges. That is why Peter Lougheed was elected in 1971. We have to regain the trust of Albertans.” Besides Starke, Jason Kinney, Stephen Khan, Byron Nelson, Sandra Jansen and Donna Kennedy-Glans have declared they are running for the PC leader position.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

The love Canadians have for one of its favourite comedians was proven when a second Brent Butt show was added at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Jan. 20. The Corner Gas creator and star of the International Emmy Award nominated hit has also been in several television series, movies and comedy specials over the years. “Corner Gas was a lot of work and a lot of fun. I miss the camaraderie of the cast, but it was the right time to leave the live action when we did, so that helps,” said Brent. “I have a production company and the idea is to stay in the game, keep making television shows and movies.” Brent was born and raised in small town Saskatchewan, which helped his comedic skills. “Stand-up comedy is still my favourite thing to do and is something I always look forward to doing. When we were making Corner Gas or Hiccups, the whole while we were in production, I was planning to go out on the road again.” It was a busy time for him. “After each season, I would hit the road (comedy tour) because it is my favourite thing to do,” continued Brent. “In a perfect world, I was allowed to do both. Live performance is really the hub for me. Getting up in front of a live audience and trying to be funny is where I learned to be funny. The less time I’m away from that, the less chance I have of making a funny show or movie. If you are doing a single camera production with no audi-
ence, you are really relying on your experience of what makes people laugh,” he added. “The hub of everything is stand-up comedy. That allows me to do everything else. The fun for me is in the creating. It is evolutionary where you take something out that didn’t work as well and add some new material. Over the course of time you have a tickle trunk-grab bag of material,” he explained. “Since the first time I saw/ heard stand-up comedy at the age of 12, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought that is what I want to and need to be doing. That’s when I started to write material.” He tried his first material on his buddies. “In high school at variety night and drama night I tried it and it went over well and people encouraged me to keep trying. I like being on television and in a movie, but the burning ember for me was doing stand-up.” Canadians from coast to coast enjoy his sense of humour. “Most regions in Canada are the same in that they think of themselves as Canadians first. To me two people who grew up in the same small town might be totally different.” Adding a second show was a hit with the comedian. “It’s great. I was happy to hear the news and I am looking forward to coming to Camrose. Being able to do two shows in a night is not a bad thing.” Brent indicated that each show he performs is different. Even on the same night. “Each audience is different and creates a new identity. How the audience reacts to things may change the course of the night. You never know what to expect

and that is one of the things that keeps it fresh,” Brent said. “I know how I want to start and the path I want to go on. But, you make adjustments as you go.” Longtime friend and comedian Jamie Hutchinson will open for both shows. “He is a super funny guy and one of my oldest buddies in comedy. He is a relat-
able guy who can perform at a curling bonspiel, or at a corporate event. He comes in and has the ability to win everyone over. He is clever and smart. I like to watch him go into the crowd and listen to his fast wit.” Tickets for his 8 p.m. performance were quickly sold out and a second show was added at 5 p.m.
