Six-bed Hospice House
…in or very near to Camrose. The vision and planning call for the construction of a facility that focuses on the end-of-life needs of the patient, as well as the emotional, social and spiritual needs of family and loved ones. The Hospice House design reflects a tranquil place providing outstanding medical attention and compassionate care in the final days and hours of one’s life. The chosen design incorporates an open layout, a kitchen as the central focal point, overnight guest suites for visiting family members and working space for additional health care providers, such as a social worker and a grief and bereavement co-coordinator. HSCD became a registered charity in 2011. The group is committed to creating a comfortable, home-like setting with around-the-clock care for palliative patients and their families. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Three to one odds
“Nothing travels faster than the speed of light, with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws.” ~ Douglas Adams ***
When I had teenagers living at home, I used to watch the news regularly. As I watched, I would do a running rant. I’d talk back to the announcer. I’d argue with people who were interviewed. I’d pontificate about what the government should be doing. I’d go on about how appalling a certain situation was. I didn’t even realize I was doing that until one day my son said, “Don’t watch if it upsets you so much.” He stopped me cold. I wouldn’t have said I was “upset.” Opinionated maybe, but not upset. I had no idea my ranting was affecting him. ***
Two years ago I stopped watching TV. Last week I had a few minutes alone in a café booth. I was cheerful, looking forward to having lunch with someone I really like who I hadn’t seen for a while. From where I sat, I could see one of those TVs with non-stop news reports. Mercifully, the sound was muted but I could still see the images and headlines. Since I rarely see TV, I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. Within five minutes I was downright depressed. Lots of people can filter out whatever is on a screen. I’ve lost the ability to do that. My immunity to TV is now zero. I was stunned by how, in just five minutes, I could go from cheerful anticipation to abject depression about the state of the world. ***
You’ve probably noticed, as I have, that lots of mass media coverage is a tad dismal. The state of the world, the state of the economy, the state of the environment, the state of the government (local, provincial, federal, other countries)–doesn’t feel like good news. Fear is in the air. Anger and bitterness are loud. Yet really, almost anywhere in North America, even the poorest among us are living better lives than humans did for millennia. We are safer and healthier, with more advantages and conveniences, fewer hardships and injustices, than most of our ancestors. How come it doesn’t feel that way? There might be a clue in something I read recently. ***
Caroline Adams Miller, author of Creating Your Best Life, wrote, “In order to flourish, whether in a marriage, at work or in any other type of environment, you need three positive comments, or interactions for every one negative. If you listen to the news, we’re so far below three-to-one it’s staggering.” Three positives for every negative? Three to one odds? When I first read that, it was daunting. But then I thought, we could use that information in a practical way. For example, I could pay attention to when I’m thinking dark thoughts or saying dark things. As soon as I notice I’m in “bitter” or “depressed” territory, I could choose to say or think three positive things. If nothing else, stopping to think of three positive things breaks the negativity trance. That in itself is a benefit. ***
So–should we stop paying attention to the news? Maybe, maybe not. We humans do have some things to resolve, whether or not we watch, read or listen to the news. If we focus only on the negative, that drags us down and makes it hard to tackle much of anything. If we think of three positive things–and there are always three positive things to think or say–if nothing else, that will lift our spirits enough so we have energy to tackle the tough stuff. If we happen to play a leadership role (and each of us is a formal or informal leader somewhere), we can have a positive influence simply by noticing and shifting those negative conversations. I hereby commit to experimenting, to see if I can flip my focus from one negative to three positive things. Can’t hurt! ***

Do you think the world is going crazy? Politicians, journalists, scientists and educators–all our so-called cultural elites–are acting crazy. “War is peace; freedom is slavery; ignorance is strength” Any dissent is viciously attacked by self-righteous purveyors of peace and tolerance. It’s as if, given the choice between two options, they invariably make the wrong decision–not some of the time, not most of the time, but every time. It’s like their view of reality is so warped
they wouldn’t recognize truth if it bit them on the nose. Most of these folks subscribe to an atheistic reality model called “naturalism.” Naturalism claims only those things we can detect with our sense or instruments are real. “Everything is physics.” On the surface this sounds reasonable but let’s just have a peek below the surface. If everything is physics then, logically, everything must operate according to observed physical laws of cause and effect. Every effect has a cause all the way back to the first cause, the Big Bang. But what about our mental states? If the mental states are physical, then they behave in accord with the natural laws of cause and effect. We don’t ‘think’ any more than an eight-ball ‘thinks’, we simply react to stimuli (like the eight-ball reacts to the cue-ball). To the naturalist, mind is an illusion because mind transcends natural law. “‘You,’ your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free
will, are in fact no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules.” Francis Crick, Nobel Prize, Physiology. Now, think about it…if Crick is right then we have no reason to believe him, his ideas are no more than molecules in motion. But, if he is wrong, then there is evidence for the super-natural. If the mind ‘thinks’ then it transcends the natural (is supernatural) and our thoughts can be trusted. Naturalism, in rejecting the super-natural ends with the rejection of reason. Molecules do not think, they react; minds do not think, they feel. If we subscribe to naturalism, as do our so-called ‘cultural elites’, then reason, facts, and truth go out the window. All that remains are feelings–emotional reactions, but feelings are not conducive to truth. In fact, trusting our feelings alone can lead to some very bad decisions. And that’s why the world is going crazy. Dave Gosse, Camrose
Killam holds charity auction, garage sale By Lori Larsen
The annual Killam Charity Auction and Garage Sale has been raising funds to help support local groups, organizations and individuals in need for 20 years. The auction began as a project for Jean and Ralph Sorenson from the Killam area. Ralph starts early in the year canvassing local and area businesses and restaurants for donations to the auction. He commits his own time and effort to making several trips, stopping at a variety of different businesses, all in the name of a good cause. This year’s auction took place on July 15 with a good-sized crowd and featured guest auctioneer, Battle River Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson, Jean’s and Ralph’s son. One of the many items collected from over 200 businesses was a hockey stick signed by the former Killam player turned NHL Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan. The

Celebrate Canada with cultural food fare Since 2017 is Canada’s 150th birthday, what better way to celebrate than with great food? On Jan. 22 the University of Alberta Augustana international students launch a week of events with Augustana’s first International Food Fare as a highlight to recognize the number of cultures that make up Canada and, on a much smaller scale, make up the campus in Camrose. “Students are volunteering to be at booths, tell stories about the food and also helped plan the menu. country chose the menu, worked with the kitchen to plan the menu and then will be at the various stations. Our food services department will be preparing the food for sampling at the food fare,” said Trina Harrison, alumni and special events coordinator. “Each ticket sold will give you seven sample tickets. It allows you to sample food from each of the seven different countries,” explained Trina. International students from different countries and regions including Bangladesh, China, Germany, India,
Nigeria, Norway, as well as Indigenous students, will have booths with mini menus consisting of food and beverage items from their various locations. “The tickets are a steal of a deal. We won’t be making money at the event,” added Trina. “The idea is to celebrate Canada 150 and have our international students interact with the community and engage in conversations. It also shows the community what kind of diversity we have at the university at Augustana.” Currently there are five Bangladesh students, 60 from China, eight from
India and 28 from Nigeria at Augustana. German and Norwegian are taught in modern language classes. There are about 35 Metis and 60 indigenous selfidentified students in total. The International Food Fare will take place on Jan. 22 in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre with a tasting menu and cash bar beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the alumni office, by calling 780-679-1626, or you can purchase them online at aug.ualberta.ca/ eqztw.

Camrose library keeps residents in touch with technology By Lori Larsen
The Camrose Public Library is expanding its technology programs in order to better serve Camrose and area residents. According to library staff member Carley Angelstad, the library will continue the existing technology programs, but will soon be offering other programs aimed at different demographics. “We will be continuing the Maker Monday after school program, which runs on Mondays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.,” noted Angelstad. Maker Mondays is a free drop in program for children in Grades 1 to 6 and encourages young children to use technology, such as spheros, circuits, or to make their own crafts. “One of the other services we offer is the use of the 3D printer,” said Angelstad. The printer is available for use by the public and is a very inexpensive way for people to try their hand at designing and subsequently having their designs printed out in 3D. “We do all the printing,” said Angelstad. “All a person has to do is go onto the website and submit either your own design or a design from one of the websites, such as Thingiverse (www.thin giverse.com/)
which has predesigned objects. You just have to find a design that has good reviews and get it printed here. The only downside, because it is a public printer, is the general wait time for your object is approximately two weeks.” The library only charges for the materials making the cost of the amazing 3D printed objects minimal. and offers an opportunity to have general questions about technology answered. “Because there has been a high demand for that program we are going to be expanding it and making a weekly adult tech program which is called Tech Tutoring,” added Angelstad. The free program will take place on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. with a drop-in hour between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. “Each class will have a different focus and our first class will be how to
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The Camrose Public Library 3D printer is one of the many services offered by the library and allows anyone the opportunity to print amazing objects by simply using a design they created or one already created from a website. use your tablets (iPad or android). Other classes will include how to use e-readers, laptops and computers in general and eventually a “How to” class on the use of the different library services offered on-line. The final details on the classes will soon be available on the library website. “The library is also expanding our programming for youth. “Technically Speaking is free and will be for teens 13 to around 18 years of age. It will be offered on Tuesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. and will be similar to Maker Mondays but will involve projects that are a little more complex. We are flexible though, so whatever the teens are interested in we are really open to.” Angelstad suggested there is the potential for film making using the library’s green screen and a variety of apps available for making stop motion, black and white and silent films. “We are going to be offering video games for caregivers and children on various professional development days throughout the year,” said Angelstad. “There will be simple family friendly video games set up that they can play, which we hope will help promote intergenerational activity.
“We are also working on a special event called a Repair Cafe. “It is a global initiative that started in Europe where residents can bring things (technology) that are broken or not working and get them fixed.” The idea behind the initiative is to not only teach people how to fix technology but encourage them to reduce waste. The event is currently in the planning stages and residents who are interested in volunteering, either expertise or tools, for the cafe can contact the library. The tentative date for the Repair Cafe is Saturday, April 22, which coincidently is Earth Day. Times for the event will be announced. The library is also hoping to begin an intergenerational tech help program. “This would be a great opportunity for youth and teens to engage with adults and seniors and feel comfortable interacting with them all the while teaching them (adults/seniors) some really valuable basic skills. “Our general programming begins on Jan. 9 and weekly programs continue running all the time,” said Angelstad. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the library programs or for more information visit the library website at cpl.prl.ab.ca/.

The Camrose Spirals extended their love of sport and their hopes that all youth have an opportunity to participate in a generous and thoughtful way with a $400 donation to KidSport. The Spirals are a community jump rope team that competes provincially, nationally and internationally. The athletes range from ages six to 18 years of age and over. The community continues to support the Spirals by participating in activities, attending demonstrations and events and
taking part in fundraising initiatives that support competitions. Between September and December the competitive athletes dedicate their skills and knowledge to coaching skippers from ages three and up. During this time participants learn to jump and develop their own skills enabling them to bridge into the competitive program. After completing the six levels of the Can-Skip program skippers can compete and continue practicing with the competitive athletes. The club has approx-

Despite having just finished one of the busiest times of year, ringing in the New Year can mean planning in advance for other major events such as weddings and graduations. Staying on budget for any large event is not only wise but it can make the event that much more enjoyable knowing you are not in major debt afterwards. The following are a few tips on how to make life events special all the while keeping your budget in mind. Select a venue well in advance to ensure you get the date you want, remem-
bering they will book up early especially when there are similar events occurring at the same time such as graduations. Consider having the event on a less popular day such as a Friday or Sunday. Let one vendor lead to another vendor. Most of these businesses are familiar with or have worked with each other and are likely willing to offer leads or advice such as your venue team recommending a florist or limo company. Don’t be afraid to ask about discounts or promotions. When booking events some organizations will offer deals such a free
Beat the yearly winter blues By Lori Larsen
Many people are more sluggish in winter than in summer and for those affected with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the problem goes beyond getting a little gloomy. People who have SAD can experience: depressed mood, lack of motivation, fatigue and often feel tired throughout the day. These symptoms can lead to excessive time in bed or in front of the television, neglect of usual pleasurable activities and reduced social contact. If you are affected by SAD there are several simple steps you can take every day to brighten up both your body and mind.
Be active. Building activity into your lifestyle not only helps lift negative feelings, it also prevents the weight gain associated with the illness. Being physically active relieves stress, builds energy, and increases both your physical and mental wellbeing and resilience. Getting in as much sunshine as possible during the winter months can help. Make sure blinds are open during the day, with a direct path to where you sit or work. Better yet, get outside in the sunshine whenever possible. For energy throughout the day, eat three meals, and have healthy snacks between meals if you find
yourself hungry. Choose foods from at least three to four food groups at meals and one to two food groups at snacks. For more healthy eating information visit www.healthyeatingstartshere.ca”www.healthyeatingstartshere.ca. Stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle to make sure you drink enough fluid during the day. Most adults need nine to 12 cups of water per day. Cut down on alcohol and caffeine. If you are concerned about your mental health or someone else’s, contact the Mental Health Help Line toll-free at 1-877303-2642 or visit www. albertahealthservices.ca.
hotel room with the booking of the venue. Some vendors may offer discounts in exchange for displaying their business cards or placards at your event. A little free advertising can go a long way. When preparing the guest list do so at least twice and strongly consider eliminating a few guests, keeping in mind your top priorities. At an approximate $100 per guest for a sit down meal and dance, eliminating just 10 guests could save you $1,000. Stay organized by making a list or book of all the crucial elements of the event which may include attire (special occasion dresses or renting tuxedos), meals for guests, transportation, photography and keep all copies of contracts and receipts. In some cases you may wish to call upon the expertise of family and friends to help reduce costs such as that special uncle who is a hobby photographer, or that crafty sister who is very artistic. When planning an event consider the demographics of the attendees and the theme of the event before booking entertainment. A group of high school graduates may not appreciate the entertainment value of a harpist and to reduce costs search out friends who are techno experts and would be willing to set up their own makeshift DJ system. Consider sharing the event and subsequent costs
with others who are celebrating the same occasion. Sometimes less is more and by cutting back on the amount of guests or choosing a buffet as opposed to a three course sit down meal you can cut costs substantially. Offering cash bars at events such as weddings removes a large cost and can also discourage over indulgence. If you are handing out favours at your event chose ones that suit all attendees but do not break the bank. Candy bars or photo booths are becoming a popular and trendy option at events, as opposed to sometimes expensive not overly appreciated knick-knacks that guests will either leave behind or discard later. Opting to have guests help with the event instead of giving gifts can not only help reduce the costs for the event thrower but for the guests as well. Plan ahead and have a budget. Doing a little research can help to save money when planning an event. Having a budget and sticking to it is essential for ensuring you do not overspend. Planning that special day does not have to be riddled with stress if you think a little outside the box and understand that it really is all about the celebration and the gathering of family and friends.

Red Moon to shine at Bailey
2017 31st Anniversary
By Murray Green
Canada’s most energetic and endearing folk trio, Red Moon Road, will shine in Camrose during the Rose City Roots Music Society series at 8 p.m. on Jan. 21. They use harmonies along with instruments such as the mandolin, banjo, guitar, delay pedals and an old bass drum. Red Moon Road makes a much bigger sound than one would expect from a trio. Red Moon Road is a tapestry of song, masterful storytelling and spontaneous repartee woven seamlessly into something truly exceptional. Red Moon Road, formed in 2012 released its third album Sorrows and Glories just over a year ago. It quickly made it to the top of the charts. Spanning a wide range of genres, from a Beatles-like pop song “Words of the Walls,” which muses the storied past of an iconic apartment block, to “Beauty in These Broken Bones,” a full-on spiritual, the three collaborative yet distinct writers frame immaculately crafted songs with original and innovative instrumental work. The band includes Sheena Rattai on vocals, percussion and keyboard; Daniel Jordan on vocals, guitar and mandolin; and Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner on vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitar, keyboard. Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre. com/tickets, at the Bailey Box Office 5041-50 Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780-672-5510.

Punch Drunk to film music video By Murray Green
Camrose’s favorite outlaw rockabilly and steampunk swing band is returning to film a music video and they want you to be in it. Area music fans are going to be treated to a special evening on Saturday, Jan. 28 when Punch Drunk Cabaret takes the Bailey Theatre stage that also includes an opening act. The music and fun begins at 8 p.m. The Electrik Steam Show album released last year by Punch Drunk Cabaret features lead singer Randy Bailer, guitarist Terry “Sawbones” Grant and drummer Capt. Sean E. Watts. Randy, from nearby Wetaskiwin, shared his views on the project. “The need to shoot a live music video has come out of demand from the industry. The three “conceptual” videos Punch Drunk Cabaret has released have gone a long way to build a fan base, as well as create interest from venues looking to book the band,” he explained. “Fans and venues alike, really like them and we love producing them, but recently we’ve been hearing from industry people that they really want to see what the band looks and sounds like live. Unfortunately there’s no substitute for the immediacy of an actual live show, but documenting the band at the Bailey will come pretty close. It’s also important to note that we’ve always considered ourselves a live band first, whose audience is part of the show. The design from day one has always been to have the audience participate with us, so a live video makes perfect sense.” You may be surprised at the choice of song for the video. “On this production we’re going to break from the
tradition of releasing original music, and shoot our radical remake of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These) by ’80s pop act, The Eurythmics. We’ve been using that song to close our shows for years and it has become a live staple to the point that many of our supporters suggested putting it on an album. It also features an acapella part that’s custom made for an audience to sing along to, so the crowd will definitely have its own cameo. Seeing as the cameras will be rolling all night, you never know what else might come out of it,” added Bailer. Bailer still considers Camrose the band’s home town. “Although Robin (Eklund of Camrose) has left the band, we consider the Bailey Theatre a great venue and a place we can call home,” said Bailer. There was never a doubt of where the video was going to be shot “As a city, Camrose was the first community to embrace us as a band, so for that reason it’s always felt like home. In fact, quite often people refer to us as a local act despite none of us being from Camrose any more. I find the people to be an interesting combination of blue collar work ethic mixed with an appreciation for the arts. Which pretty much describes the band. They’ve been loyal and supportive and that means the world to us. As for
the Bailey, I’ve always maintained that it’s a provincial jewel. We play a lot of different venues throughout Western Canada, but there’s no topping the Bailey for beauty, or vibe. There’s something magic that happens when people gather in that room for an event. Add to that local openers, The Men Who Fell to Earth and you have an event that really celebrates Camrose as a community.” Punch Drunk Cabaret has consistently released a CD every two years, and it will only be a year. “It’ll be another 15 months before the next one. But we’ve been writing new material that will start making its way into the live show in the fall. We’ll also be adding some more radically-remade cover songs as well, which is a key part of the PDC appeal. The most recent has been a swingin’ version of the ’80s metal classic, You Got Another Thing Comin’ by Judas Priest mashed up with Radar Love by Golden Earring. Classic rock radio staples like you’ve never heard them before,” said an excited Bailer. Aside from the video shoot, the band will be performing a full night of music. Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre.com/ tickets, at the Bailey Box Office 5041-50 Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780-672-5510.

Hamelin is a new fable, but is based on a story from a few centuries ago. It will be shown on the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre stage at 2 p.m. on Jan. 21. Back in 13th century Germany, Medieval Hamelin Town is way too big for its lederhosen. Governed by a spoiled mayor, his mommy and stuffy corporate types who have no interest in its hard-working townsfolk, the town is primed to learn some important lessons in life from our heroes, 10-year-old twins Celeste and Ralph. When it seems that no one other than their Opa Johannes ever keeps their word, they come up with a plan to make the grownups wake up and smell the strudel. After the ridiculous new taxes render this tight-knit family homeless and desperate for help, they encounter a hapless “Minstrel,” a flute that has seen better days and lots of rats. Full of comedic twists and live music, this highenergy, original adaptation of the Pied Piper of Hamelin fable is sure to delight audiences of all ages. Hamelin: A New Fable is the winner of the 2015 Jessie Richardson Award for Design Concept and Execution. This is a great show for ages five to 12, but the adults will love it as well. It is written by Leslie Mildiner and Bob Buckley provides the music. The live musical adventure, Hamelin, delivers a strong message about the importance of “keeping your word” and that lying doesn’t pay off in the end. This is a comedic, hearttugging retelling of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, using masks, puppetry and a unique physical theatre style. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www. camroselive.ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances.

Cemetery offers above ground burials
Mirrel Roy Nelson
By Murray Green
The City of Camrose now provides columbarium service as another option for burials in the Valleyview Cemetery. The columbarium was completed late last fall, which is a granite structure with niches that can hold cremains in a safe and respectful setting. “The trend now is to provide more columbarium services for cemeteries. We had more interest over the past two years. Our columbarium holds 64 niches and the cemetery has space to expand to six columbarium structures in the same area in the future. When it sells out, we will look at building another one,” said Chris Clarkson, parks director for the City of Camrose. “Each niche is designed to hold one or two urns with a maximum urn size of 17.78 cm depth, 25.4 cm width and 25.4 cm in height.” A cremation niche is an above ground burial space, where a decedent’s urn, containing his/her cremated remains, is placed inside and sealed. “Each niche space has a letter and number for easy reference. Rosettes hold the niches in place and can be removed with a special tool. After the niche granite plate has been removed, there will be a second door with a locking system for security where the urns will be placed,” said Chris. Many people are choosing above ground burial in a cremation niche as it affords comfort in all seasons, especially in inclement weather. “The lower two levels cost less than the third and fourth levels because the demand is higher for the eyelevel niches,” he explained. “We are ready to sell the niches and it is a new service for us to provide.” A columbarium niche is a wall, which contains many cremation niches, designed to hold urns. It is an outdoor structure that contains 64 niches. The term columbarium in modern usage can also be used to describe a mausoleum. The two terms are interchangeable. Similar to a mausoleum, there is usually a wall with recessed compartments for placing the cremation urn permanently. The purpose of a cremation niche is to give the family a place to visit their loved one’s cremated remains, also known as ashes. They are available in a space that can hold one or two urns. “The columbarium structure cost about $55,000 and we plan on adding benches,” Chris said. Continued on page 28

Lloyd George Bowie October 21, 1923 ~ January 9, 2017 Lloyd Bowie was born to Ida and George Bowie on the family farm west of Rosalind on October 21, 1923. He was the second youngest in a family of five. Lloyd married Evalene Pederson on July 6, 1946 and they spent the next 70 years together within five miles of where each was born, building a successful farm and raising a family of four boys. They began their life together on one quarter where they milked cows, raised chickens and pigs, and “scratched” out a living. He always emphasized how hard things were. They then purchased a river quarter and later bought a half section, their current home place, where they continued to expand their mixed farm. Lloyd loved baseball, playing as a boy and on into adulthood. He fostered that love in his four boys and was key to the training of the only pitcher among us, Harvey, teaching him how to throw his famous curve ball. There was a lot of baseball played on the farm. Lloyd’s focus was family and farm. He had no desire to travel. He loved having everyone home to visit at family gatherings. He was a lifelong member of the Elks and was a strong community supporter. His strength, courage and determination are traits that stood out throughout his life and certainly were exhibited in his final journey. He never gave up! He is survived by his mate of seventy years, Evalene; sons Doug (Cathy), Harvey, Bill (Cindy) and Brent (Dawn) of Camrose; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and brother Allan. He was predeceased by his parents Ida and George, as well as brothers Lyle and Charles, and sister Bernice. Dad, rest in peace. You have earned it. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, January 13, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at Rosalind Community Hall with Rev. Deanna Cox officiating. Interment has taken place at the Green View Cemetery in Rosalind. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Hospice Society of Camrose and District or to St. Mary’s Hospital.

Augustana joins Make Some Noise for Mental Health By Murray Green
Student athletes and mental health advocates in Alberta are teaming up with RBC Olympians and Sheldon Kennedy to reduce stigma related to mental illness and promote mental health and wellness. Make Some Noise for Mental Health is an awardwinning campaign, which promotes mental health awareness on 17 post-secondary campuses in 15 communities. The campaign started on Jan. 16 and continues until Feb. 12. The Augustana Vikings, (University of Alberta Augustana) will be encouraging fans to get louder on Jan. 20 and 21. The hockey club hosts Concordia on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the EnCana Arena, volleyball teams host King’s on Jan. 20 at 6 and 8 p.m. and the basketball teams host King’s on Jan. 21 at 6 and 8 p.m. in the gym. The Vikings will be welcoming Olympian Marc Kennedy, who will be attending both volleyball (6 p.m.) and hockey games (7:30 p.m.) on Jan. 20. He will be available for autographs at both games and will be making a brief presentation at the Vikings hockey game. For a second consecutive year, and with endorsement from the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is conducting a conference-wide mental health awareness campaign.
CURLING FOCUS
File Photo Marc Kennedy focuses on making his shot in the EnCana Arena during curling action in Camrose. He will be returning to the arena to support Make Some Noise for Mental Health.
“We learned from the first SAIT Trojans campaign two years ago and the initial ACAC campaign last year, just how important this health issue has become on our post-secondary campuses,” said Mark Kosak, CEO, Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. “Students and ACAC student-athletes in particular, are coping with a broad spectrum of stressors and we’re only beginning to truly understand the full and varying effect that can have. Our students and our student-athletes are future leaders and we believe this
campaign can profoundly contribute to societal views about mental health to create a more understanding and tolerant future.” This year the ACAC is excited to welcome RBC as the 2017 Make Some Noise for Mental Health presenting partner. The ACAC is elated to announce the appointment of honorary Make Some Noise Campaign chair, Sheldon Kennedy. The recent Order of Canada recipient won a Memorial Cup, World Junior Championships gold medal and played for three NHL
teams during his hockey career. He is best known for his courageous decision to charge his Major Junior Hockey league coach with sexual assault for the abuse he suffered over a five-year period, while a teenager under his care. “By empowering the bystander, we create an environment where standards are set and informed actions can be taken. I truly believe that, in my situation, had adults/ peers around me had the knowledge, questions would have been asked and things
would have been different,” Kennedy said. This project was initiated by SAIT in 2015 and the Trojan Outreach Program won a national community service award for their efforts. By involving studentathletes as role models, Make Some Noise for Mental Health is intended to encourage empathy, understanding and open mindedness, while creating awareness about the resources and support available on campus and in the community. The campaign will be promoted through studentled, on-campus activities and appearances from NHL Alum Sheldon Kennedy and RBC Olympians Anastasia Bucsis (speed skating), Jessica Campbell (women’s hockey), and Marc Kennedy (curling) at ACAC events for various sports including volleyball, basketball and hockey. “CMHA recognizes that mental health on campus is critical during a time when students are facing new challenges and higher levels of stress,” said David Grauwiler, executive director, Canadian Mental Health Association Alberta Division. “Through Make Some Noise student-athletes bring attention to the importance of asking for help, speaking up and supporting mental health. We know students, like all Albertans, need to know when they need help and where to get help with mental health concerns.”

Kodiaks split north trip series By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks lost a tough 3-1 contest to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons after skated away with a 4-2 victory in Bonnyville. A bad second period was the difference against the Oil Barons as they scored all three goals as they out shot Camrose 22-5 in the frame. This came after a scoreless, but Kodiaks dominated first where they led 11-4 in shots. Cooper Johnson netted the lone Camrose marker in the third as the team tried to mount a comeback. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 29 of 32 shots. The Kodiaks doubled Bonnyville with a good defensive game. Eddie May started the scoring in the first for the Kodiaks. After a Pontiacs tally, Joe Tambasco replied. In the third, Camrose collected markers from Josh Zablocki and Ryan Hartman to provide enough goals for the win. Gora stopped 331 of 33 shots directed his way, while the bears managed 23 at the Bonnyville net. You have to go back to Oct. 18 to recall the last time the Camrose Kodiaks won a hockey game over the Canmore Eagles. The Eagles started the year with two straight victories on New Year’s day and Jan. 2 to record three wins in a row against Camrose. Canmore’s four point weekend vaulted the soaring Eagles past the Kodiaks and into fourth place. However, the bears are getting closer to taking down the birds. Back in the fall the Eagles won 4-1. This year, Camrose closed the gap with 4-2 and 4-3 losses. On Jan. 2, three Canmore power play markers were the difference in the contest. It was 1-1 after the first period with Matt Gervais connecting for the Kodiaks. It was all Camrose in the second when Tate Coughlin and Hartman scored. The momentum shifted back to the eagles in the third as they replied with three straight tallies. Netminder Gora stopped 25 of 29 shots, while Camrose fired 28 at the Canmore net. In the New Year’s day meeting, Canmore built a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes before the Kodiaks scored early in the third. Colin Schmidt and Coughlin brought Camrose back into the game with goals, but an empty net tally ended the comeback bid. Gora turned away 26 of 29 shots directed his way. Camrose recorded 29 shots on goal. The Kodiaks host Brooks on Jan. 17 to complete the three game home stand. Camrose closes out the month with home dates on Jan. 21 with Sherwood Park and Jan. 28 with the Calgary Mustangs at the EnCana Arena.

MLA delivers good news for Albertans By Bruce Hinkley, Wetaskiwin-Camrose
MLA
Good news for Albertans is our commitment of $34 billion for capital and infrastructure projects. This increased capital support will add and sustain about 10,000 jobs over the next three years. The increased capital spending is expected to boost economic activity, adding about 0.7 per cent to the level of real GDP in 2017. Some of those capital project include 133 schools under construction (31 completed this fall) and an additional 56 in the planning, design or tender stages. Both Wetaskiwin and Camrose will benefit from education capital planning– Wetaskiwin Composite High School has been given $20 million for renovations and Camrose will soon have a new Catholic high school. I continue to press for the building of a new Maskwacis Cultural College and the new science building at University of Alberta Augustana campus. Likewise, across Alberta there are more than 400 transportation projects in planning, engineering or construction phases. The traffic circle at Camrose and the cities and the town of Millet all received significant Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding for road and street renovation or construction. Highway 13 west of Wetaskiwin received some new paving. The end of 2016 also had good news for Albertans with the approval of two pipelines which will give Alberta better access to markets. These pipelines will create over 20,000 direct jobs. It is nice that we can promote responsible resource development while at the same time protecting the environment for our kids and future generations. The failure of previous federal and provincial governments to take climate change seriously was a dead-end for Alberta families and our economy. It was clear that the old method of confrontational politics, of shouting at Ottawa and the other provinces, was not working to get Alberta better access to markets for our oil and gas products. We chose a different path and decided to build a plan that would protect our environment and build our energy economy. The pipeline approvals are proof that this plan worked: when Prime Minister Trudeau announced these pipeline approvals, he said, “Let me say this definitively, we would not have approved this project without the leadership of Premier Notley and Alberta’s climate leadership plan.” Support for everyday Albertans has taken the form of the Alberta Child Benefit; 110,000 Alberta families have already received their first payment supporting the well-being of approximately 200,000 children. Help for lower income families makes it possible to make ends meet and support a better quality of life for their children. This will raise thousands of children out of poverty. Support for families has also come in the form of a power price cap. Electricity prices in Alberta have been extremely volatile in the past. When the price cap is fully implemented, Albertans will pay no more than 6.8 cents per kilowatt hour. This price cap will be in place from June 2017 to June 2021. For people on a Regulated Rate Option (RR0), they will pay either the market rate for electricity or the capped rate–whichever, is lower. The majority of power consumers in Alberta are on a RRO, however, Albertans are welcome to choose a plan from any private energy retailer if they feel it’s a better fit for them. Unsolicited door-to-door energy sales will be banned in Alberta. The ban includes: furnaces, natural gas and electricity energy contracts, water heaters, windows, air conditioners and energy audits. We know that people are concerned about the impacts of the carbon levy on their household budgets and on the budgets of their farm or small businesses. Our government has taken decisive action to mitigate the effects of the carbon levy on families, small businesses, farms and agribusinesses by: providing 60 per cent of Alberta households with a rebate, based on the average costs of the carbon levy according to family size and income level. Economists tell us the average Albertan uses 4,000 litres of gas a year at .045 cents will cost $180. The average Alberta home consumes approximately 100 giga joules of natural gas for heating purposes at $1 is another $100 cost. No where near some exaggerated predictions of $2,000 to $3,000. Alberta’s small businesses are receiving a tax rate cut by one-third, from three to two per cent to offset some of the carbon levy costs. Farmers will not pay any levy on marked gasoline or diesel for farming purposes. Have a great week everyone. For more information please check the Alberta Government web pages or call my offices to talk to Niel or Tony at either 780-672-0000 or 780-352-0241.

The automotive section of
Ford’s Model T started mass production of vehicles By Murray Green
Back on Oct. 1, 1908, the first production Model T Ford is completed at the company’s Piquette Avenue plant in Detroit. Between 1908 and 1927, Ford would build about 15 million Model T cars. It was the longest production run of any automobile model in history until the Volkswagen Beetle surpassed it in 1972. Gottlieb Daimler built the world’s first four-wheeled motor vehicle in 1886, but it was too expensive for most Americans. Henry Ford became inspired by the gasoline powered automobile that was invented by Karl Benz in the same year. In 1896, Henry Ford built his first car, a horseless carriage using a simple frame with an ethanol-powered engine and four bicycle wheels mounted on it. He called his creation the Quadricycle. With help of investors (that included John and Horace Dodge, who later started their own company, Dodge Brothers) the Ford Motor
Company started in 1903 with a Model A. Prior to the Model T, cars were a luxury item and not for the masses. At the beginning of 1908, there were fewer than 200,000 on the road. Though the Model T was fairly expensive at first (the cheapest one initially cost $825), it was built for ordinary people to drive every day. It had a 22-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and was made of a new kind of heattreated steel, pioneered by French race car makers, that made it lighter (it weighed just 1,200 pounds) and stronger than its predecessors had been. Early Fords tended to overheat if driven too fast for any distance because the little brass radiators were undersized. The Model T was an automobile conceived by Henry Ford as practical, affordable transportation for the common man, it quickly became prized for its low cost, durability, versatility and ease of maintenance. It could go as fast as 40 miles per hour and could run

on gasoline or hemp-based fuel. A touring model was listed at $850, a runabout $825, coupe for $950 and a town car for $1,000. Initially, the cars came in a choice of four colours; grey, green, blue and red. In 1914, in a way to cut production costs, he eliminated the selection and went with only black. He found black paint to dry much faster and it increased production. However, at the same time he promised all workers a minimum of $5 a
day, about twice as much as any other car maker. He reduced the work day from nine hours to eight and they were so delighted that they accomplished about the same amount of production. By the time the 1,000,000 car rolled off the assembly line in late 1914, a 1915 model, a touring car cost $425, runabout $390, town $640, sedan $740 and a coupelet was priced at $590. The coupe was discontinued in favour of the coupelet that was the first convertible top.

Ford kept prices low by sticking to a single product. By building just one model, for example, the company’s engineers could develop a system of interchangeable parts that reduced waste, saved time and made it easy for unskilled workers to assemble the cars. By 1914, the moving assembly line made it possible to produce thousands of cars every week and by 1924, workers at the River Rouge Ford plant in Dearborn, Michigan could cast more than 10,000 Model T cylinder blocks in a day. By 1924, a brand new runabout could be purchased for as little as $260. But by the 1920s, many Americans wanted more than just a sturdy, affordable car. They wanted style, speed and luxury too. As tastes changed, the era of the Model T came to an end and the last one rolled off the assembly line on May 26, 1927. It also marked the first time the company suffered a loss, a glimpse of the upcoming dirty ’30s depression was in view.

Family Literacy Day Jan. 27
Literacy lunch, learn event supports parents
By Murray Green
The Battle River School Division will be supporting Family Literacy Day by holding a Literacy Lunch and Learn event on Friday, Jan. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Sparling School. The Literacy Lunch and Learn session is for families with children ages three to eight. There will be information tables set up by various community agencies and sessions designed especially for parents. A free lunch will also be available. BRSD Literacy Support Teachers, Keely Nelson and Melissa Skuce are heading the program to encourage parents to develop literacy skills at home. “We have been working for the last five or six years to support teachers in developing student literacy skills in schools through instruction,” explained Keely. “This year we are adding more parent engagement sessions and this is our first big one.” Parents can bring their preschool children to the event to attend some of the open sessions. “We really want to help provide support for parents, skills to help them to work at home on literacy skills in a fun and playful way. We want children to learn basic literacy skills at home before they go to school,” added Keely. “We want to
help build a literacy learning atmosphere at home as the children go to school and into Grade 3. Parents want their children to be successful, but they may not have clear ideas about how to improve literacy. This event will provide suggestions on everything from how to build oral skills on shopping trips and just having conversations with your children.” The Literacy Lunch and Learn is an educational event for both parents and children. “The introductory session we are planning is to provide the basic educational information from the beginning. Then we have sessions manned by BRSD staff and community engagement partners, so parents can see how it can be embedded in people’s lives.” BRSD offers both school and community support at the event. “Partners for the event are Camrose Family Literacy, Camrose Family Resource Centre and the Camrose Public Library,” said Melissa. “We have sponsors helping us with this event. The Canadian Pediatric Society, Second Story Press, Kids Can Press (Kids Can produces the Franklin the Turtle series) and Edmonton Family Literacy Centre are helping us by bringing resources. We want parents to be able to

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

“We run a deficit on the cemetery, but we are getting closer to cost recovery.” The cost of a cremation niche includes the property holding the urn and endowment care. Engraving information, pictures, or art work on the niche must be approved by the City with a permit and is at the cost of purchaser. In cities, cemetery space is very limited and expensive. Many people prefer above ground burial as a
matter of personal choice. Above ground burial niches are not subject to extreme weather conditions. “It extends the life of the cemetery by not using as much space,” he added. Above ground burial with a cremation niche is a viable option to grave burial of an urn for families who want to visit their loved one’s final resting place. For more information, or to purchase a niche, contact the parks department at 780-672-9195.
