Not too late to plan for retirement Submitted

Some people do not have the ability to begin saving for retirement early on. Others may have brushed retirement savings aside for so long that they are now worried that it’s too late to begin socking away money for retirement. While it’s best to start saving for retirement as early as possible, the good news is that it’s never too late to start planning for retirement. If your 40th birthday has long passed and you’re finally thinking ahead to retirement, consider these catch-up strategies. · Research tax-advantageous retirement savings plans. A financial planner can point you in the right

direction, or consult with your employer about employee programs. Deposit money into an RRSP or another retirement vehicle. Jump on any opportunities when your employer matches invested funds. · Cut back on expenses. Cutting back on unnecessary expenses is a great way to save more money for retirement. Figure out where you can save some money you can then allocate to retirement savings. Maybe you can reduce insurance coverage on an older car or raise your deductible? Downsize cable packages or skip that costly cup of coffee on the way to work. Perhaps it’s time to look for a smaller, less expensive home or a compact car

instead of an SUV. Any money saved now will benefit you when the time comes time to bid farewell to the workforce. · Delay your retirement. Many people who retire find themselves bored and looking for ways to fill their time, and as a result more and more people are delaying their retirement, which also gives them more time to save for that day when they do call it quits. If you want to work less, discuss and negotiate a phased retirement with your bosses that allows you to stick with your employer but gradually work fewer hours until you retire completely. You may be able to work parttime for several years and

PHONE 780-672-3142 4925-48 STREET, CAMROSE retire when you’re most comfortable. · Consider more aggressive funds. Even if you are 50 you still have a few decades before retirement, which leaves lots of time to grow your retirement savings. But you may want to consider more aggressive funds that can help you catch up more quickly than less aggressive investments. Just know that aggressive funds may also leave you susceptible to substantial losses.

· Don’t amass debt. If you’re saving for retirement but only paying minimum balances on your credit cards, then you’re not really saving. Pay down credit card debt before you begin to set aside money for retirement. Delaying retirement planning may mean you have to work a little harder to build up a solid reserve. But by following some financial tips and persevering, you can still enjoy retirement with security.

Junior Kodiaks earn four points against Bobcats By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks picked up four points in a twogame series with the Lloydminster Bobcats, Jan. 20 and 21. Bryson Traptow was named the player of the game on back-to-back nights. He had a rough December with injuries and being sick, but he made up for lost time by leading his club to the victories. “It’s good to feel good and be back in the lineup. It’s good to get back on the scoresheet and help the team pick up a couple of wins,” said Bryson. Camrose won 3-1 and 4-2 in an away and home series. In the second match, Traptow collected two assists and had a strong defensive game, as well as controlling the power play. “We look at the standings, but we have to worry about ourself first. There is nothing you can do about other teams unless you play them,” Bryson added. “We want to string a few wins together and go from there.” Cooper Johnson and Matt Gervais scored first period tallies to give the Kodiaks a 2-0 lead. Zach Vinnell added to

the lead with the only marker in the middle frame. In the third, the Bobcats fought back with two power play goals of their own, but Colin Schmidt connected in the third to secure the win. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 27 of 29 shots, while Camrose fired 38 at the Lloydminster net. “We have a lot of injuries right now and as the guys come back, it will certainly help us. With guys out, a lot of other guys have had to step up. That is nice to see and definitely hope they continue as players return. We want to surprise a couple of teams in the playoffs,” Bryson said. “Players may get power play time where they normally won’t and it adds to more experience and depth for the team. It gets the confidence level up and we are going to need that depth come playoff time. Playoff hockey is completely different than regular season and depth is super important.” Traptow scored twice and assisted on Tate Coughlin’s goal to spearhead the offence. The Kodiaks blasted 41 shots on goal, while Gora

turned away 21 of 22 shots in a welcomed slower night for the steady netminder. “He (Gora) has been unreal this past while, very steady and it reassuring that he isn’t going to let in much back there. We can trust him and that is huge for our game.” He was traded from Whitecourt to Camrose during the season. “That was hard at first, leaving by buddies and billets behind. My first two years there were good, it just wasn’t clicking this year. It has been an awesome hockey change. The coaches are great here and the team is run more like a professional club. It’s been amazing and prepares me for next year.” His brother Tyler was one of the players called up from midget to fill in for injuries. “It was pretty cool because I’ve never played with him, so it’s pretty special, in my last year, to play with him,” explained Bryson. Camrose opens February at home (Feb. 3) with the Olds Grizzlys at the EnCana Arena. Brooks visits on Feb. 7, and Canmore arrives for two games on Feb. 9 and 10.

Local pumping business fights prostrate cancer By Murray Green

Prostate cancer is the leading form of cancer diagnosed in Canadian men. If diagnosed early, prostate cancer may be treatable. Even when the disease is advanced, treatment can eradicate symptoms and prolong survival. Survival rates for prostate cancer have been improving for the last four years, perhaps due to the importance that is placed on early detection.

“One in seven men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in Alberta every year, a fact we didn’t realize until someone working for Trademark was diagnosed,” said Mark Suchy, owner/operator of Trademark Pumping. “Men who are diagnosed early have a fantastic rate of success. Our challenge to you is this; if we raise $30,000 in funding for Prostate Cancer Canada on behalf of Trademark Pumping, we will com-

mit to purchase a new 38 meter pump truck painted light blue and lettered to create awareness for Prostate Cancer.” Treating the physical symptoms of prostate cancer, or prostate related disease is only part of the recovery process. A resource centre is equipped to give patients and their families the information and support they need to overcome the stresses of diagnosis and treatment.

“I was under great doctor care for years, because my brother had prostrate cancer three or four years ago. I knew I would have to keep an eye on my PSA (blood test levels for potential of prostrate cancer) to see if the level was increasing,” said Jim Robichaud of Trademark Pumping. “If it increases then you are at a high risk. Men over 40 should get checked. In Alberta, one in seven men will be diagnosed

Trademark Pumping will be painting its new truck blue and adding logos of supporters to raise money for prostrate cancer. The local company wants to raise $30,000 for the disease and create awareness for men to receive regular check-ups.

Residents urge safer sidewalks By Lori Larsen

With the fluctuations in temperatures from warmer days to cold nights, the likelihood of icy roads and sidewalks increases dramatically posing hazards to both drivers and pedestrians. In order to ensure the safety of residents the City of Camrose snow removal Bylaw 2371/03 outlines specific requirements of owners of non-residential (commercial and institutional) and residential properties. According to the bylaw Section 3 every occupant or owner of any non-residential property shall within 24 hours (excluding Sundays and holidays) after the cessation of snowfall, remove all snow and ice from any sidewalk adjacent to the said property. According to Section 4 every occupant or owner of any residential property, shall, within 72 hours (excluding Sundays and holidays) after the cessation of a snowfall, remove all snow and ice from any sidewalk adjacent to the said property. City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd offered some snow removal tips to help property owners maintain clear and safe sidewalks. “Shovel snow early before it gets compacted. It is a lot easier before it turns to ice. “Freeze/thaw cycles are difficult because of the dams created by snow

banks,” noted Boyd. “Make note of where the water tends to pool and then try to create channels for the water to escape to the curb (in order to get to the catch basins.) “Treated sand is available free of charge from the public works site on 51 Avenue (one five gallon pail at a time.)” If snow and ice remain on sidewalks, it creates hazards for everyone, including your neighbours, delivery and service personnel and especially those with

limited mobility. Being a responsible property owner means ensuring walkways around your property are safe. “We are reminding home and business owners alike to remove snow in a timely manner in an effort to make our sidewalks safe for our citizens,” said Lucy Ernst, chair of Walkable Camrose. “We are aware that winter can be difficult for walkers, especially when people do not shovel. Not only does this impact those individuals on foot,

but also those in wheelchairs, walkers and those pushing strollers.” For more information and specific detail on City Bylaw 2371/01, the removal of snow and other obstructions from sidewalks in the City of Camrose visit camrose.civicweb.net/docu ment/107. To report unkempt sidewalks contact the community peace officer at email enforcementservices@ camrose.ca or by telephone at 780-672-8300.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Tyler Helgeland takes time to ensure the sidewalks are safe by shoveling snow back from the sidewalk before it melts then freezes again.

with prostate cancer during their lifetime. When detected early, prostate cancer is one of the most successfully treated types of cancer. A Man Van (a mobile unit to take a simple blood test)will be in downtown Camrose to test potential for prostrate cancer on April 22, the same day a new pump truck will be unveiled. “We want this to be a big event to raise awareness. All men should be tested on a regular basis, even when they are in their 30s,” added Jim. “Calgary has two Man Vans and we would like to see some in Edmonton area.” For sponsors who contribute $1,000 or more their company logo will be displayed on the new pump as well. “We are impressed with breast cancer campaigns that are done annually and I only wish to bring awareness to this cause as well,” added Mark. “I have relatives that have had to deal with prostrate cancer, I know people in my industry that deal with it and one of my own employees was diagnosed with it,” he continued. “He will be fine. He is one of those guys that had a clean bill of health all of his life, but was tested every six months and they caught it early enough.” Trademark Pumping’s goal is to raise $30,000. So far seven sponsors have committed $8,400 to reach about 28 per cent of the target. “I’m trying to bring awareness to prostrate cancer because guys like me and people I know tend to go to the doctor once every 10 years. I want to send the message that guys need to take care of themselves.” In the past Trademark Pumping has gone with red coloured trucks. “My new truck will be blue with a prostrate cancer logo on it to support them.” Jim’s levels increased to the point he needed a prostrate biopsy and standard 12 samples were taken. “Ten of the 12 samples were positive. They gave me five different methods to choose from to deal with my prostrate condition.” The operation by robotics was completed on Dec. 9. He will know if further treatment will be required by early February. “The biggest problem right now is that the awareness isn’t great enough,” said Jim. “If we get the awareness out there, we will feel good about people being saved.” When you provide your contact and payment information of $30 or more, you will receive a tax receipt. The electronic tax receipt will be sent to the email address that you provide. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Rising to the occasion

Sometimes, when things are really tough, we rise to the occasion. We deal with the heavy things, the crisis things. And then some little thing knocks us over. A woman once told me about the time when her family lost their three-generation farm. It was an excruciatingly painful time. During the three or four years when they could see the problem coming, they scrambled to fend it off, worked harder and longer, tried one more thing, but eventually had to face their worst nightmare. The bank foreclosed and they had to leave the farm. She said that during those years of unrelieved stress, their family held it together, kept handling one more blow, did what had to be done and mostly managed to be kind to one another during the toughest time of their lives. “I handled all of that,” she said. “But you know what did me in?” “No,” I said. “The church organist for my son’s wedding.” ***

I got it. Once when I was terribly unhappy in my job for a large organization, I had a similar experience. The problem at work wasn’t workload, though we often had to work long hours. Long hours didn’t bother me. What bothered me was we’d had a change in leadership and everything we were doing seemed to violate what I understood to be the organization’s core values. We were trashing trusted relationships and undoing work that had taken years to develop. Hard work I could manage. Hard work was sometimes even exhilarating. But violating deeply-held values? And no hope that I could influence what was happening? Being part of something I didn’t approve of? That was the stuff of burnout. I still had children to support, so definitely needed to work. I was applying for jobs all over, but every door seemed to slam shut. One morning when I turned into the alley for my parking spot behind the office building, a truck was blocking the alley. I burst into tears. That scared me. When I thought of things I’d overcome in my life, things I’d accomplished–and a truck blocking the alley did me in? I knew I was in trouble.

I am a resident of Camrose and notice how many people don’t take care of their sidewalks in the winter. An address on 53 Street is an example of where no house even exists and has had four complaint calls made to the police, bylaw officers and one call to the Mayor. It took over two weeks to finally get it taken care of. If someone slips and hurts themselves it can cause great injury and loss of time at work. People don’t seem to get it, but I do and it is very frustrating to repeat myself to

deaf ears. People I’ve talked to throughout the city agree but don’t know what to do or who to call or don’t have any faith that anything can be done. It’s common sense to shovel sidewalks in the winter, however a lot of residents don’t do it. More enforcement and awareness is needed to teach people to take responsibility for their property. It’s too bad society needs a babysitter. Michael Smith, Camrose Other choices

All I hear now a days is how dissatisfied Albertans are with our current Alberta New Democratic Party. Many people have told me that there does not seem to be a lot of choices when it comes to political parties. I do believe this is due to a lack of education when it comes to current political parties here in Alberta. There are currently 10 parties listed with elections Canada when it comes to parties operating in Alberta. There is the Alberta First Party who is lead by Bart Hampton; Liberal Party,

David Swann; Alberta Party, Greg Clark; Alberta Social Credit Party, Jeremy Fraser; Communist Party of Alberta, Naomi Rankin; Green Party of Alberta, Janet Keeping; Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta, Ric Mclver; Reform Party of Alberta, Randy Thorsteinson; Wildrose Party, Brian Jean; and finally our current government, Alberta New Democratic Party, which is lead by Rachel Notley. There are 10 parties, which people could join and support. There is no excuse why there is no where for people to go and to belong to. So, in the 2019 election. I do encourage everybody to find a party and to join that party. Maybe in our next election, we could have 10 parties running instead of the usual five. This could make our next election into an interesting contest instead of a boring event, which a lot of people seem to always avoid. Politics can be very interesting if everybody puts their minds to make it interesting. The choice is up to you. Lorne W.P Vanderwoude, Camrose

More people than usual are facing stressful times in East Central Alberta, dealing with factors over which they have no control but that have huge impact on their lives. Times of high stress and huge transitions are also a time when many of us are more likely to experience volatile emotions and dark angry thoughts, to look for someone to blame, to lash out. And, though we may manage to handle the really big things, little things can do us in. At a minimum, this is a time to be attentive to our own well-being, to do the things that keep us healthy. As they say on airlines, put your own oxygen mask on first, so you can look after yourself and others. It’s also a time to be kind to one another–as irritating as each of us and all of us may sometimes be. It’s a time when, though our first instinct may be to blast off, it will be more useful to back off and think of a kind response or a kind gesture. Laughter is great too, if you can manage it. Some of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard were black humour during a dark time. It’s also a time to remember all the good things– even in tough times–that are still blessings in our lives. In the midst of a deep recession, we are still more fortunate than most people on the planet. No magic answers to any of the stressors. No quick “feel good” solutions to the challenges. But what we can do is be even more attentive and more responsible for the kind of presence we are in the world. Kindness and laughter are catchy. ***

Harder returns to Augustana By Murray Green

New York tenor Dominic Armstrong and pianist Joel Harder will perform a concert called A Lad’s Journey at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. It’s a homecoming for one of Augustana’s prized pupils. “It’s always a treat to return to Camrose,” Joel said. “Augustana is my spiritual home. It’s where I started out. I look forward to visiting some friends.” The concert features poetry by English writers such as Robert Louis Stevenson, W.H. Auden, Thomas Hardy and William Shakespeare. The poems are loosely connected by the theme of the different paths that a young man can choose as he comes of age, whether that path involves settling down to a domestic life or setting off to explore the world. “Dominic is an excellent singer, and we have the same taste in music,” Joel explained on how they partnered in the show. “We have performed the show once before, but it is pretty new. The more I work as a collaborative person, as I see myself now, I find it easy to work with him. We have similar instincts.” Augustana’s music students will have the opportunity to attend master classes with the two musicians. Joel graduated with his doctorate from the Julliard School of Music and is a professor at SUNY Binghamton, New York. Students and members of the public can also join the musicians for an informal preview luncheon on Feb. 3 at noon in the Lougheed Centre. English professor Paul Harland will host an interdisciplinary discussion about the featured poets and poems. “We want to share a discussion about the music we are bringing to the concert. The event is open to the public, but registration is required. We want to give an insight about the music. It’s like program notes, but more than that to give people an understanding of what is going on,” Joel added. Contact Debra at olafson@ualberta.ca or 780-6791626 to book lunch. Joel started his music studies at Augustana in 1997, studying piano with Milton Schlosser. Looking back, he appreciates the liberal arts foundation he received at Augustana. “One of my first professors was Milton. We still keep in touch on a regular basis.” He is excited about a full weekend of activity, including the learning sessions. “Anytime you can get the audience invested is good.

Aviation Hall of Fame launches endowment fund At a recent meeting of the Board of Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame, the directors voted to establish an endowment with the Battle River Community Foundation to ensure the future financial stability of the Hall. Each year, net earnings from the new fund will be granted directly back to Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame to meet operational needs. Several local organizations have established their own endowments under the umbrella of the BRCF to build sustainability and guarantee their long-term success. One of these is the Camrose Rotary Club, that established an endowment back in 1997. To the end of 2015, the last year for which final results are available at this writing, the fund (without any subsequent contributions from the club) has grown to $157,843, while allowing the club to recommend grants totalling $62,820, which have supported their many worthwhile projects.

Other organizations that have also established their own endowments with the BRCF include The Open Door, the Camrose Performing Arts Centre, the Camrose Association for Community Living, the Prague Cemetery Association, the Bethany Lutheran Church of Donalda and others. Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame is hosted by the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin, with displays in the museum’s hangar. The Hall was founded in 197 and since then over 200 members have been inducted. The men and women honoured have led extraordinary lives as military and civilian pilots, doctors, scientists, inventors, engineers, astronauts and administrators. The Hall strives to increase public understanding and interest in aviation and aerospace history by making its displays, archives, records, and artifacts accessible to current and future generations. Camrose Adult Learning Council AGM By Lori Larsen

Camrose Adult Learning Council Annual General Meeting held on Jan. 25 at the Norsemen Inn briefed attendees with information on the services offered by CALC and supplied the 2015-16 annual report. Board chair Linda Wnuk welcomed attendees consisting of CALC board members, community partners and out of town guests including Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley and representatives from Alberta Advanced Eduction. CALC executive director Diane McLaren described literacy and indications that an adult may have a literacy need and services, courses and workshops offered by CALC. “When you hear us talking about literacy we are talking about literacy, the big picture,” said McLaren. CALC assists adults

working towards education and employment goals by providing a variety of services to adults who are either self referred or referred by another organization or individual. CALC Family Literacy Coordinator Lynne Hartwick spoke about the Family Literacy Program. “Family Literacy Program works with children any where from birth to kindergarten age,” she explained. “I can attest to the importance of getting children off to a good start and that they have all those early learning skills and proper development in every way before they come to school.” Hartwick described the literacy program and specifically what it does to provide in-home visits to assist families with literacy. She also provided information on when to and when not to refer parents to CALC,

specifically to the Family Literacy Program. “We work with families who need our help,” said Hartwick. “Sometimes they just need someone to come in and work with them one-on-one.” Annual report

McLaren presented the Annual Report 2015-16. The total revenues of $172,182 included the Advanced Education Grant of $143,270, membership fees and donations $9,237, NorQuest College Project funds $4,477 and programs totalling $15,198. The expenditures totaled $174,508 with a total deficit of $2,326. “Our board has made some hard decisions this year,” noted McLaren. “We have had staff changes, program direction changes and we just moved to a new location.” CALC is now located at #7, 5000 51 Avenue. What if your gift could make a difference, not only today, and not only for a lifetime, but forever? The Battle River Community Foundation helps donors create that kind of support. We call them “endowment funds” and they are more affordable than most people think. The power of an endowment is felt over time, creating a permanent legacy. For most organizations, raising enough funds for current operations is a never-ending struggle and many organizations f ind themselves back at square one at the beginning of every budget cycle. Having an endowment is an effective way to build a more sustainable and stable source of funding and become less vulnerable to fundraising shortfalls. Gif ts that a re endowed are not immediately spent; they are invested and grants are made of a certain portion of its value each year. T his a nnual amount is used by the organization to support its annual operations and programs. As the value of the fund grows over time from investment returns, the portion paid out each year also grows. This is the true power of endowment. Over time, the fund will grant back to the designated organization a cumulative amount far greater than the original gifts

and the fund itself will become larger. Because endowment funding is regular and predictable, the organization is able to look ahead and be strategic about its future plans. While some people may think endowments are created by only very wealthy people, or only for very large institutions such as universities and hospitals, the truth is that any organization can start–and benefit from–an endowment fund. Being able to build a named endowment to $10,000 over time allows more donors to create this type of ongoing gift. Also there are many ways to grow an endowment. Donors may choose to make an endowment contribution during their lifetime with a gift of cash or securities (such as shares and mutual funds). Donors may also leave a gift in their wills as a lasting legacy. In fact, some organizations have a policy that bequests be endowed so that the donor’s support continues. Donors who support endowment tend to be those people who believe strongly in the mission and vision of the organization and share a passion for the work that organization does in the community. T hrough the power of endowment those donors and the organization together build sustainability and stability for the future.

After leaving Camrose, Joel went on to a masters program in solo piano at the University of Ottawa. There, he became interested in collaborative piano, more commonly called accompaniment. “Collaborative piano suits my personality,” Joel said. “It’s more cooperative and social than solo work, and I seem to have an affinity for it.” Joel completed a post-graduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music in London and a Doctor of Musi-

cal Arts degree at Julliard, a program that accepted only six musicians. He has performed with Placido Domingo in Los Angeles, collaborated with Maestro Lorin Maazel at the Castleton Festival in Virginia, performed at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Centre, and played one of Beethoven’s pianos in the composer’s summerhouse in Austria. Now he is a music professor at the SUNY Binghamton campus, where he is starting up a masters pro-

gram in collaborative piano. “I’m pioneering new ground for SUNY,” Joel said. “It’s a good fit for me. Being on a liberal-arts campus again, I’ve come full circle. Part of my research is going out and performing, so it is a good fit for me. To teach students well, I need to actively perform as well.” To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www. camroselive.ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922.

Prior to the introduction of the Camrose Community Bus getting out and about in Camrose for some residents was more than a challenge. Since the inception of the bus in March 2016, for many those concerns have been alleviated as they find themselves boarding the bus to be driven to several convenient stops around Camrose. Recently Thursdays were added to the schedule to better provide riders with more options and the City is now contemplating a Saturday run as well and ridership continues to grow. In an effort to encourage more riders from the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus student Autumn MacDonald began an initiative to give away 75 free Community bus tickets sponsored by the RBC Make150Count program. “When I received the RBC Make150Count I went over a lot of ideas,” said MacDonald. “I really wanted to make it something that is long term lasting.” With $150 in hand McDonald approached the City about purchasing 75 Community Bus tickets to be given away to Augustana students in hopes of raising awareness about the bus service, creating connectivity between the Augustana community and Camrose community and reducing the carbon footprint by encouraging the

use of the bus over individual vehicles. Despite the already low cost of riding the bus, McDonald felt that giving away free tickets would further encourage ridership from Augustana students. “It (the bus) is very convenient for on-campus students,” she added. “Hopefully it will encourage a sense of community by getting riders to plan their trip ahead and where to go to make it in one trip and help to support local businesses.” MacDonald also commented that the bus service would be especially beneficial to international students, or others, who do not have their own personal mode of transportation. The RBC Make150Count program offered to young Canadiansdoesnotdictatehow participants should use the $150, but does request the participant demonstrate how the money was used and that the money be used to help communities prosper. “I really wanted to give back to, not only the Augustana community, but Camrose community as well.” MacDonald purchased 74 tickets and will be offering approximately 35 free round trip fares to Augustana students. For more information on the initiative contact Jo-Anna Wohlgemuth at Augustana Faith and Life office or the Dagligtale office.

Police warn be aware By Lori Larsen

Camrose Police Service would like to remind residents to be wary of any type of telemarketing calls or telephone calls requesting donations. On Jan. 26, police received a complaint from a Camrose residents indicating they had received a telephone call from a person alleging to be a constable from the Camrose Police Service raising money for an anti-bullying campaign. “The Camrose Police Service does not engage in, endorse, or conduct telephone solicitations to raise funds for community policing programs,” reminded Camrose Police Constable Kelly Bauer. “Police agencies in other jurisdictions have also received similar complaints of someone representing themselves as a member of the local police service,

RCMP or the Canadian Police Association trying to solicit funds for a variety of different reasons.” Con artists have been using a variety of different scams to illicit funds from innocent people and the police advise when in doubt, hang up. “If an individual wants to support or donate money to any type of cause or charity the best method is to contact them (the organization of cause) directly. Initiating the contact is much safer then responding to a phone call from someone claiming to represent a cause or charity.” For more information or to report an incident visit www.antifraudcentrecentreantifraude.ca/indexeng.htm or telephone, toll free, 1-888-495-8501.

Angels making angels By Lori Larsen

Happily supporting others comes naturally to a group of generous Camrose grandmothers and grandothers. The Camrose group of The Grateful Grannies came together for a work bee on Jan. 23 at Quilting From the Heart to meticulously construct Aids Angels as part of fundraising efforts for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. The angels take on unique personalities as they are delicately created by each individual member of the Grateful Grannies. Fran Reed, (Grateful Grannie), inspired by

a prototype of the Aids Angels, introduced them to the Camrose Grannies when the group first began in 2010. Fran has added features and enhanced the angels and continues to be the driving force behind their success. Since 2010 the Angel group has produced over 2,000 angels, allowing them to donate over $20,000 towards supporting women, orphans, grandmothers and people living with HIV and AIDS in Africa. Jim Byrnes was born in St. Louis, Missouri – that’s blues country. He grew up on the city’s north side. One of the neighbourhood bars had Ike and Tina Turner as the house band. As a teenager going to music clubs, he and his buddy were often the only white people in the place. “We never had any problems. Reischman’s Jaybirds fly into Bailey By Murray Green

John Reischman and The Jaybirds will play at the Bailey Theatre in the Prairie Edge Home Companion Series on Friday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. Bailey board member Geraint Osborne arranged for the performers. “It certainly is a bonus when a top-flight band like this agrees to come to the Bailey. These band members are seasoned professionals.” John Reischman and the Jaybirds deliver a fresh blend of original songs and instrumentals with old-time heritage and bluegrass. The group has five critically acclaimed albums, two Juno nominations and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. The band takes bluegrass that is innovative, unadorned, sophisticated and oldfashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. Reischman and his band will feature nine new songs from all five founding band members. Stellar Jays is the latest CD to earn rave reviews. The band is from the west coast with leader John Reischman from Vancouver. He is on mandolin, Jim Nunally is on guitar, Trisha Gagnon is on bass, Nick Hornbuckle is on banjo and Greg Spatz plays the fiddle. Jim is a San Francisco Bay-area veteran of several decades as a leading guitarist, songwriter and high, lonesome singer. Jim appeared with John on the Grammy-winning CD True Life Blues, the Songs of Bill Monroe. Chilliwack, BC-based Trisha provides irresistible vocalists in bluegrass. Nanaimo, BC-based Nick Hornbuckle has developed his own voice on the five-string banjo, a unique sound with a twofinger roll unlike other contemporary banjo players. Spokane, WA-based Greg Spatz is a world-class bluegrass fiddler. Each of these Jaybirds has earned their wings contributing to many projects in the West Coast music scene. Their style includes a good blend of story-telling and side-show humour. Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre. com/tickets, at the Bailey Box Office 5041-50 Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780-672-5510.

Canadian singer and musician Jim Witter was so well received last year that he was brought back by popular demand. His brilliant concert featuring the masterpieces of Billy Joel and Elton John left the audience wanting more. Witter changed his plans to accommodate a western Canada tour. But, it won’t be the same show. He will be performing the great songs of Simon and Garfunkel and other artists in the same era in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Feb. 2 starting at 8 p.m. “My memories of Alberta are wonderful, ever since the 90s. It is always a great trip and people still remember my original country music shows,” said Jim. “This time the show will reflect the 60s and was inspired by audience suggestions. I go into the lobby after shows and talk to people to see what they think about it,” he added. “The names Simon and Garfunkel kept popping up. It has been a well received show. The interesting comment we get from this show is that people don’t think of themselves as a Simon and Garfunkel fan, but after hearing the show, they realize they are fans.” His renditions are so riveting that if you close your eyes, you would think you are listening to Hall of Fame artists themselves. “I think he (Paul Simon) is one of the best folk-pop songwriters of the century. When I first started the show I knew the songs, but I didn’t learn them until then. Sitting down and learning them really drove it home to me, how such a phenomenal writer he was and continues to be. It would be a whole new show to feature his solo work.” Witter’s versatility as an artist has allowed him the opportunity to reach out and share his music and his infectious personality with audiences of all ages across North America. He is capable of going back to the same stage with the same fans and perform an entire different concert that leaves fans amazed at his talent. “It thrills me that people request for me to come back. That is the goal of a performer. You don’t want to go to a place and be done with it. I never take it for granted. Continued on page 21

The automotive section of

Evolution of tires followed automotive trend By Murray Green

The invention, or evolution, of tires started with wagons and bicycles long before we had vehicles. The earliest tires were bands of leather, then iron (later steel), placed on wooden wheels to be used on carts and wagons. Charles Goodyear of the United States patented a process known as vulcanization. Thomas Hancock of Great Britain also patented it in 1844 in his country. This process involved heating and removing the sulphur from rubber, thus making the rubber water-proof, winter-proof and allowing it to retain its elasticity. While Goodyear’s claim to have invented vulcanization was challenged, he prevailed in court and is remembered as the sole inventor of vulcanized rubber. That became hugely important once people realized it would be perfect for making tires. Robert William Thomson of Scotland invented the actual first vulcanized rubber pneumatic tire. Thomson patented his pneumatic tire in 1845 and his invention worked well, but it was too costly and he never went into production. That changed with John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish veterinarian and the recognized inventor of the first practical pneumatic (inflatable) tire. His patent, granted in 1888, wasn’t for automobile tires, it was intended for use on bicycles. It was an effort to prevent the headaches of his 10-year-old son Johnnie, while riding his tricycle on rough pavements. His doctor, John, later Sir John Fagan, had prescribed cycling as an exercise for the boy. Dunlop worked with Harvey du Cros and formed Dunlop Tyres. Between 1886-88, Karl Benz invented the first gasoline car equipped with unique metal tires covered with rubber and filled with air, resulting in a pneumatic tire.

The public, which was accustomed to hard, metal tires, believed the pneumatic tire to be no less than revolutionary. Popular use of the pneumatic tire began in 1895 and it was featured in an automobile race from Paris to Bordeaux. Brothers André and Edouard Michelin had previously patented a removable bike tire, were the first to use pneumatic tires on an automobile. In 1904, mountable rims were introduced that allowed drivers to fix their own flats. By 1905, tread is a part of a tire that comes in direct contact with a road surface. Made out of thick rubber, tread protects carcass and breaker inside a tire. Road surface friction coefficient increased with a development of the tread tire and today it is produced in various patterns. The B.F. Goodrich Company invented longer life tires by adding carbon to the rubber in 1910. In late 1913, Henry Ford introduced the first conveyor belt assembly line to the world, marking the start of the first stage of automobile popularization. In 1931, American company Du Pont successfully industrialized synthetic rubber. This development allowed tire industry, which had been dependent on natural rubber, to increase tire quantity and quality, ushering in a turning point in tire production. A balloon tire, a type of low-pressure tire is used in various types of automobiles to increase its contact area to road surface with low internal air pressure in the 1920s. The Goodrich Company also invented the first synthetic rubber tires in 1937 made of a patented substance called Chemigum. By the 1940s, it became popular to reduce the size and weight of existing car models. Many manufacturers eventually employed the

front-wheel drive method for their cars. With a development of the tubeless tire in 1903 (by P.W. Lichfield of the Goodyear Tire Company), the resulting weight reduction contributed significantly to the saving of fuel. However, the tubeless tire wasn’t overly popular until it appeared on 1954 Packards. In 1946, Michelin developed the radial tire method of construction. Michelin had bought the bankrupt Citroën automobile company in 1934, so it was able to fit this new technology immediately. Today there are many types of tires for all seasons and uses. Often airless tires are used on machines to avoid puncture.

Canadian Bull Congress beefed up excitement

The Pen of Three event held during the Bull Congress gave breeders an opportunity to show off the consistency of their stock and gave the bulls a chance to show off for the crowd.

WHO can

I count on?

Continued from page 18

There are places, such as a site near Chicago, where we are going back for the ninth time. It is like coming home again. Alberta is special for me because they are one of the few places that remembers me as a country artist. I get asked about it a lot, but I don’t have a country show. I don’t know why. I would love to do a legends of country from the 50s. I would like to perform early country rock like the Everly Brothers.” He has four major shows. “I have Beatles show, Billy Joel and Elton John show and even Barry Manilow as well. A big part of the shows is using the big screen behind us and to relive the era of the music. We like to take people back in time to hear different artists. It’s one thing to hear the old classics, but it is another to get emotional about it and recall the memories. I want people to recall the wonderful times, or how music got you through rough times.” Witter has a rich, powerful voice and has an ease of manner at the piano that makes him a favourite everywhere he travels. Bass player Ian Tanner will be helping Jim with the two-part melodies of Simon and Garfunkel. “It’s not like I’m Simon and he is Garfunkel. We switch back and forth and he sings a solo as well. Simon and Garfunkel learned how to sing by copying Phil and Don Everly.” Jim and the band open the second half with an Everly Brothers song. For Alberta audiences, he is likely to add one of his country songs for old time’s sake. “We get to know people in every city because we can go back with a totally different show,” said Witter. “I like to have interactive shows and sing along together, so it is fun for everyone.” Witter has earned multiple awards and nominations from the Canadian Country Music Association, the Juno Awards and most recently the Dove Awards in Nashville, where his album Forgiveness was nominated for Inspirational Album of the year. From his first self titled record, to All My Life and Forgiveness, Witter has had 10 top 10 radio hits in Canada, seven hit videos on CMT and in the United States on Billboard and R&R. Social Media call assist with your marketing By Murray Green

The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce members listened to Ashley Meadahl’s tips for using social media marketing on Facebook at the regular meeting on Jan. 11 at the Camrose Golf Course. The social media coach explained how local businesses could market together to increase business awareness. She started the Empowering Women Conference using social media. “Based on that success, the Rural Business Centre asked me to share that information with them and talk about helping others,” said Ashley, from Premier Event Management. “Here are five quick tips to improve Facebook for your business. Use your call action button. This is a new feature to Facebook and if you haven’t already, enable this feature. You can direct someone to call you, or look at your product on your web pages,” she said. “Number two, add a handle name for your business. It can direct people to your page. Facebook now automatically gives you one. If you don’t like it, you can change it. Number three, if you have a book page and you are wondering what to post, some ideas are quick business tips, details on your products or services, and one of my favourites is adding a teaser for announcing something that is coming up,” she explained. Ashley introduced a live feature and videoed the audience. “How many have used the live feature? You write the title and hit live button and then you can video live. Facebook live shows you who has joined in. This is great if you have a new product to feature or demonstrate.” Number four is adding a hashtag and join with others. “These are really important to add and other people’s audiences will find your hashtag. Number five is supporting each other. When you are on a business page, go to another business page and go to the drop down menu and like another business. It shows that your business supports another and not you personally. If you work a lot off your phone download Facebook Pages first for easier navigation,” shared Ashley. The next meeting will be on Feb. 1 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. It will be the 107th annual general meeting and the new president board of directors will be sworn in.

David Leslie Reimer

Wildie Christenson

David Leslie Reimer was born on July 25, 1969 in Camrose, Alberta to Fred and Doreen Barkman Reimer. God called him home unexpectedly in the early morning hours of January 12, 2017. David was welcomed by his Dad and Mom, brother and four sisters. He had a happy childhood, working and playing with his family. His first years were spent on the family farm at Edberg, Alberta. When he was 11, the family moved to Carrot River, SK, starting a new congregation with several other families. This was an exciting adventure for David. He enjoyed his school days and his friends. He gave his heart to God when he was 13 and was baptized, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. David was an enthusiastic Christian, putting his heart into singing, teaching Bible school on the Indian reserve and giving time at the boys’ unit in Montreal. On September 22, 1991, he married his childhood sweetheart, Lenore Megli. David was a loving and caring husband. We shared 25 happy years and dreamed of growing old together. Our married life began at Carrot River where he continued working on the farm with his dad and brother. Here, Trista and Brooklyn were born. Wanting to be of service, God led us to Vanderhoof, BC where David taught in mission school. Here, Jared and Staci joined our family. We decided to make BC our home and found a beautiful spot with a panoramic view of the Sinkut Mountain, trees and meadows. Here, we lived our dream. We loved working together as a family, building up our ranch while spending many happy hours outdoors caring for our cows, horses and dogs. Our dear Dad was a patient teacher, giving us his confidence: “You can do it!” Dad didn’t sweat the small stuff. He instilled in us a love of God and the beauty of nature. He loved flowers. We loved to spend evenings listening to him read aloud. He was the best Dad and a great example. He took time to enjoy life with his family and friends, taking trips, camping, singing around the fire and reciting poetry. David lived life to the fullest. We will miss his reassuring presence. He leaves to cherish fond memories: his precious wife, Lenore, and children Trista, Brooklyn, Jared and Staci; his parents Fred and Doreen Reimer, Camrose, AB; his brothers and sisters Bonnie and Tony Isaac, Sinclair, MB, Candace and Ken Thiessen, Cromer, MB, Vickie and Gerald Thiessen, Edberg, AB, Danny and Lenore Reimer, Porcupine Plain, SK and Lorna and Glenn Johnson, Lakin, KS; Lenore’s family: parents Irvin and Irma Megli, Carrot River, SK; brothers and sisters Vietta and Greg Isaac, Birnie, MB, Vonna and Dale Bartel, Roblin, MB, Wayne and Rilla Megli, Donica Megli, Bein and Trudi Megli, all of Carrot River, SK, Ardene and Kim Isaac, Vanderhoof, BC; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his nephew Royce Isaac.

Wildie Christenson from Kingman, Alberta passed away on January 22, 2017 at the age of 98 years. She is survived by her children Sharon (Dennis), Daniel (Elizabeth), Chris ( Jane), Greg (Nancy) and Rollin (Lovel); numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, relatives and friends. Wildie was predeceased by her husband Wyman and one great-grandchild. A visitation was held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Salem Lutheran Church in Kingman with Pastor Garfield Vikse officiating. Interment will follow at the Kingman Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Kingman School Museum and Tea House.

Buster Percy Brown Buster Percy Brown of Camrose, Alberta was born on December 23, 1930. He passed away on January 27, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose at the age of 86 years. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Reports

On Jan. 8 a Tofield area man plead guilty to unlawfully killing a mule buck and doe. This case resulted from an anonymous public tip provided in November 2015. The Camrose Fish and Wildlife enforcement utilized DNA analysis and an expert witness in photographic comparison analysis, from the Calgary Police Service during the prosecution. A second Tofield area resident had plead guilty to the same charges earlier in 2016, and in total, the court levied a fine of $7,000 and two years of hunting license suspensions. The deer meat and antlers were forfeited to the Crown. Three Edmonton area men have been charged with 31 counts under the Wildlife Act and one count of failing to report a lost/ stolen firearm under the Criminal Code of Canada. This file began with an anonymous tip forwarded in 2015. The charges included unlawful hunting and possession of moose, trespassing, hunting while impaired by alcohol and obtaining hunting licenses while ineligible to do so. After an anonymous September 2016 tip, a joint investigation between the Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Vegreville FEWB branches ensued. During that investigation, over 1,000 man hours were expended resulting in seven search warrants being executed and 115 charges under the Wildlife Act being laid. A Judicial Order prohibiting the men from hunting, carrying any weapons or accompanying any other hunter for the next four years, was issued by the presiding judge, as well as fines exceeding $10,000. A white tailed deer buck of “world record size” status, was seized and forfeited to the Crown. Reporting any suspicious or illegal activity involving wildlife or land abuse to Report a Poacher 1-800-642-3800 assists Fish and Wildlife officers in investigations and may lead to charges and subsequently the discontinuation of possible offences.
