Wildrose leader gathers information in Camrose By Murray Green

Alberta opposition and Wildrose Party leader Brian Jean stopped in Camrose to gather information from supporters on the topic of allowing the Progressive Conservative Party to merge with them, Feb. 6. Although the Wildrose Party is posed to defeat the NDP government in the next election, they are listening to thoughts of the Wildrose and PC parties merging. “We are proposing a unity plan on a general outreach to members on what they see as a future conservative movement in Alberta. I want to see first hand on what they think the road is for the future,” said Jean. “Ultimately the members have the decision making process. I want to refine that plan as much as possible and put that forward at the annual general meeting.” Both conservative parties have been talking about a merger for 15 months. “We’ve talked about joining together and putting old grievances aside. I’ve always been clear that was a better way going forward, even when the PC’s rejected us last spring,” Jean explained. “We lost a lot of faith in the movement going forward because over 1,000 PC members showed up and said let’s not consolidate. I was upset by that because I was trying to get the conservatives in Alberta together.” Jason Kenney, who is leading in popularity in a PC leadership campaign, is in favour of a merger. “Conservatives always work bet-

ter when we are working together. We have work to do and we could be looking at an election in one year’s times from today. That is not out of the question. We have to be prepared at any time to take on the NDP,” added Jean. “I do believe the Wildrose Party, on its own, could win the next election. But, this is about giving the members the opportunity to consolidate and give us an even better opportunity to beat the NDP. It not just about this next election, its about future generations of Albertans. It is important to have a conservative fiscal voice to represent the needs and priorities of Albertans,” continued Jean. “We need to do this sooner, rather than later. We need this going by the summer and finished before we get back to work in the fall legislation. Let’s be clear, the NDP have pushed through some really bad laws and we need to be there every step of the way in order to oppose them. We need the new leader ready to oppose the caucus and face the next election,” Jean said. “I think people are overly positive. They see me putting the party before myself in order to consolidate a conservative movement. A single movement would be much more powerful in the future to give a better government. Its about putting Albertans first. My leadership was built on that and I will continue to work on supporting Albertans even as premier.”

WINTER WALK

UNITY TALK

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Wildrose Party leader Brian Jean spoke with Camrose residents to gather information on if the party should merge with Progressive Conservatives prior to the summer.

Jean said he is still going to be the leader. “If we unify the two parties, then I will be still running for the leadership of that party. I’m not going anywhere,” he told the audience at the Recreation Centre. Under Alberta election laws, if two parties merged, all party finances and assets would be forfeited to the Crown. The current Progressive Conservative leader-

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Charlie Killam School staff and students walked the winter blues away by wearing their winter jackets and boots, and going for a brisk walk to encourage Albertans to get active in the winter months. Winter Walk Day is an annual event created to combat the idea that winter weather is a barrier to outdoor active recreation.

Show Us Your Heart for Pets, animal shelter By Murray Green

During February, Global Pet Foods is asking the community to share its love with three local organizations. The Battle River Animal Protection Society (BRAPS), the Camrose Dog Park and the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society all benefit from the 11th annual Show Us Your Heart fundraiser that runs until Feb. 26. Pet parents are invited to visit Global Pet Foods Camrose (5706-48th Avenue) knowing that 100 per cent of the funds raised will go directly to BRAPS to help provide medical care for sick and injured strays, spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and food and litter for rescued animals; the dog park to help with expenses and the fund to build a new animal shelter. Global Pet Foods Camrose has developed a longstanding relationship with the protection of animals and continually raises money through Show Us Your Heart. Last year, Global Pet Foods Camrose raised more than $3,700. You can donate as little as $1 at the local Global Pet Foods store during the annual Show Us Your Heart campaign and it will be matched. Global Pet Foods Camrose store owner Chris Zamora supports BRAPS because it is a non-profit

organization operated solely by volunteers and only funded by public donations. BRAPS advocates for animals in the Battle River area by protecting them from neglect, abuse and abandonment. Global Pets in Camrose has been supporting the society for the last nine years. For more info on BRAPS visit www. braps.ca. Adoption days at the pet store will be on Feb. 18 and 25. However, Chris is willing to go one step further. “A $10 donation for a paper heart will earn you a gift card and bonus Air Miles,” she said. “All proceeds will go directly to the three organizations and all the funds stay in Camrose.” To show your heart to homeless pets and the volunteers that support them, visit any Global Pet Foods store and Natural Balance will match the first dollar of every donation made instore. Donations can also be made online by visiting globalpetfoods.com. All proceeds will be donated to local pet shelters and groups. Community-based pet groups often struggle to raise the funds necessary to keep the lights on and pay vet bills. Even the smallest donation made during the Show Us Your Heart campaign can make a big difference to pets in need and the people who are caring for them.

REFLECTIONS ‘Par’ taking in a by Bonnie Hutchinson Chocolate Mousse

About that chocolate mousse recipe … it’s available! Last week I told a story about a totally decadent recipe for chocolate mousse, a Valentine’s gift from an Edmonton chef. I ended the column with, “So here’s my valentine gift to you. If you send me an email at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson. com, I’ll email you the Chocolate Mousse recipe.” Many people did. And – many people weren’t able to get through to my email. By Wednesday morning, The Booster was receiving notes from people whose emails to me had bounced back. ***

Here’s what happened. On the same day that invitation appeared in The Camrose Booster Reflections column, my behind-the-scenes folks who look after all things technical were making some changes to my website and email set-up. In the course of that process, a new spam filter kicked in. The spam filter blocked all addresses with “cable-lynx” in the domain name. You may be aware that “cable-lynx” is a popular domain name in East Central Alberta. Aaaaarrrrgh!!!! The problem took a while to spot, in part because the first email I received last Tuesday was from a “cable-lynx” person who sent me a note before the technical change had started. ***

It took half a day and several different tactics to get the problem fixed. The technical folks couldn’t just remove “cable-lynx” from blocked addresses because the giant spam filter in the sky had blacklisted the domain name – how insulting – and also has no sense of humour. As we were getting to the bottom of the problem and technical people were working on it, one of the emails I received (at a different email address) was: “…maybe your spam filter thinks we’re bad people…:>)” It was signed, “Your dear son.” The technical folks had to do several “workarounds,” but the third try worked. My email is now joyfully accepting emails from cable-lynx ***

The final insult? Someone whose domain name is “camrosebooster” was also bounced from my email. Same problem – domain name blacklisted! On second thought, maybe the giant spam filter in the sky has a diabolical sense of humour. Here’s the most important takeaway. The Chocolate Mousse recipe valentine gift is still available. If you send me an email at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com, I’ll email you the Chocolate Mousse recipe – with apologizes for last week’s mix-up. ***

The mix-up did cause me to reflect on a bigger issue: the elegant balance of protection that’s enough but not too much. Every good thing in life has a potential dark side. Email, for example, has huge benefits in convenience and quick communication and a written record. But shortly after its introduction, email also came with risks of viruses, and huge volumes of unwanted communication. Due to an earlier technology problem, I was at one point receiving more than 500 spam messages a day in my inbox (not my junk mail folder, my inbox). I felt like I was under attack in a vicious siege. I’ve been thrilled with a newer spam filter that, most days, blocks any spam messages from arriving in my inbox. But – as I experienced last week–there’s such a thing as too much protection. In the desire to fend off what could be a genuine danger, we can screen out things we really want. Outside of technology, lots of aspects of life – food, exercise, global travel, friendship, sports, international trade – can be a joy and a benefit but under certain circumstances can do harm. In emails, and in life, and in public policy, it’s a neat trick to get the balance right, of being protected from genuine danger without blocking out gifts and opportunities that would enrich our lives and benefit our communities and our countries. We could at least be kind to each other as we try to sort out that balance. Meanwhile, Happy Valentine’s Day – whether or not it includes chocolate mousse! *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

good cause By Lori Larsen

Giving to a good cause is par for the course for Camrose residents and the second annual Putt Up A House Charity Snow Golf Tournament hosted by Habitat for Humanity Camrose and sponsored by Camrose Energy, held on Feb. 25, will be no exception. Everyone, golfer or not, is invited to come out and join in the fun of playing some not so traditional golf and help out families in the community. There are 18 holes all over Camrose including some holes located at and hosted by local businesses. “Using a club of your choice and a soft foam ball, teams of four will tee off at designated spots (maps will be provided at registration) and keep score just like on the golf course,” explained Habitat for Humanity Camrose project coordinator Brenda Murdock. Unlike traditional golf, getting to each designated hole can not be done on a golf cart instead teams will car pool to drive to each hole. “We considered some input we received from last year’s participants to make some changes to the event this year,” added Murdock. “The holes will be closer together so there is less driving and more interaction between teams, and there will be a 50/50 draw at the banquet.” To add to the fun and frivolity of the event participants are encouraged to dress in costume, perhaps a theme for the team. “Creativity and wackiness is definitely encouraged,” said Murdock. “We will have prizes for best costume, best decorated vehicle without distracting traffic too much of course, craziest club, best hole, and most tweeting, to name a few.” Registration will begin at noon on Feb. 25 at Re Store. Golf will begin at 1 p.m. and go until 4:30 p.m. The banquet and awards will take place at 5 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort and Casino. Replacing the silent auction this year will be a Silent Donation, the main fundraising component of the event. “Instead of asking businesses for donations for people to bid on at the banquet, we are asking businesses or individuals to donate towards the purchase price of items used to build a Habitat home. This way, everyone who donates

over $20 can receive a tax receipt. It’s a win/win for everybody.” The set up for the Silent Donation will be similar to that of a silent auction displaying items that are needed to build a home including items such as a window, door, nails, lumber, flooring and shingles. “Each item will have a bidding sheet beside it and we will be asking people to designate their donations towards individual construction materials,” said Murdock. “For example, an individual may want to buy three bundles of shingles, or contribute $100 to the flooring.” Every donation (bid) will count, unlike a silent auction where only the last bid counts, and will be totalled then put towards the purchase price of the corresponding item allowing for each donation to convert into actual material. “We hope participants will appreciate how concrete their donation actually becomes. “All contributions to this event will help to make the dream of home ownership come true for two more families in Camrose.” The entrance fee includes an afternoon of snow golf and the banquet. Tickets can be purchased to attend just the banquet.

“We really want to keep the fee down so people and families can afford to participate,” commented Murdock. “We are thankful for the support that businesses in town have shown us for this event. Camrose Energy is our title sponsor, and other businesses are participating by ‘hosting a hole.’ Businesses are very enthusiastic about being involved in the day and we are looking for ‘hole hosts’ to be even more creative this year with their hole placement and interacting with snow golfers.” Participants will need to bring warm clothing (suitable for weather conditions), a golf club (a limited number will be available at Habitat during registration) and your own transportation with a designated driver. Participants will be provided with two playing balls each, a scorecard, a map of the course and game rules. For more information on the Snow Golf Tournament including registration forms and game rules visit the Habitat website at www.habitatcamrose.com. Stretch your retirement savings Many budding retirees plan to travel, relax and enjoy the company of their spouses when they officially stop working. But such plans are only possible if men and women take the steps to secure their financial futures in retirement. According to a recent survey by the personal finance education site MoneyTips.com, roughly one-third of Baby Boomers have no retirement plan. The reason some may have no plan is they have misconceptions about how much money they will need in retirement. Successful retirees understand the steps to take and how to live on a budget. Have a plan. Many people simply fail to plan for retirement. Even men and women who invest in an employersponsored retirement pro-

gram should not make that the only retirement planning they do. Speak with a financial advisor who can help you develop a plan that ensures you don’t outlive your assets. Set reasonable goals. Retirement nest eggs do not need to be enormous. Many retirees have a net worth of less than $1 million, and many people live comfortably on less than $100,000 annually. When planning for retirement, don’t be dissuaded because you won’t be buying a vineyard or villa in Europe. Set reasonable goals for your retirement and make sure you meet those goals. Recognize there is no magic wealth-building plan. Saving comes down to formulating a plan specific to your goals, resources, abilities, and skills. Make saving a priority and take advantage

of employer-sponsored retirement programs if they are offered. Don’t underestimate spending. You will need money in retirement, and it’s best that you don’t underestimate just how much you’re going to need. No one wants to be stuck at home during retirement, when people typically want to enjoy themselves and the freedom that comes with retirement. Speak to a financial planner to develop a reasonable estimate of your living expenses when you plan to retire. Pay down or avoid debt while you can. Retiring with debt is a big risk. Try to eliminate all of your debts before you retire and, once you have, focus your energy on growing your investments and/or saving money for retirement.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose developments remain steady as noted by this Valleyview West subdivision.

Camrose development shows steady average By Lori Larsen

In a report to city council on Feb. 6, City of Camrose Planning and Development director Aaron Leckie presented the 2016 development statistics. “The last time this report was done was in 2014 at the mayor’s annual address to the city. I thought it was something we should bring back because it is a really strong indicator of performance within our department and the number of permits that come through,” explained Leckie. “It demonstrates that, regardless of some of the stories out of Calgary and Edmonton, perhaps the situ-

ation in Camrose isn’t as bad as we hear.” Statistically speaking

A total of 480 permits were issued in Camrose in 2016. The 2012-16, five year average, was 486.4 permits. The annual statistics remained within five per cent either way of the five year average excepting accessory structure permits and Compliance Certificates which declined more than five per cent and new subdivisions, new lots created, decks and sign permits which increased more than five per cent. In 2016, the City processed the second most subdivision applications since 2008 with a total of 11 subdivisions

being approved and in the process of being registered with Alberta Land Titles. These 11 subdivisions represented the registration of 148 new lots in Camrose. The number of major development permits consisting of residential(single-family dwellings and multi-family), commercial and industrial developments held steady at 124 compared to 2015 at 126. The overall value of the permits did decline however from $44.50 (in millions) in 2015 to $29.59 (in millions) in 2016. This is the result of more multiunit developments, which are typically more cost effective for developers per unit. “I recognize that this is just one of a whole multitude of economic indicators,” remarked Leckie. “But I think it is pretty reflective of the type of development we see.” “Areas like Creekview, Valleyview West and West Park are still growing areas of the city and in almost every category we are within five per cent of our five year average.” Leckie indicated that the numbers do fluctuate somewhat in accordance with the economic conditions in the province but that Camrose doesn’t see the big booms or big busts like other municipalities. “My overall assessment on this from a development permit standpoint is our numbers are steady, consistent and relatively stable.”

Camrose residents will soon be noticing that the street lights around town will be getting a makeover. As part of an initiative to green up Camrose FortisAlberta and the City of Camrose will be replacing all 2,203 existing city street lights with brand new LED lights. “The project was initiated by FortisAlberta, but is aligned with the City’s Blue Dot declaration,” said city manager Malcolm Boyd. The new lights shine a more vibrant white light, which not only increases safety, but because they focus the light downwards they are Dark Sky Friendly, enabling people to see the night skies much clearer. The lights being replaced include all Cobra style lights on City streets. This will not include decorative lights (such as on Main Street) or lights that exist in private parking lots or on private property. “The project is cost neutral,” added Boyd. “The rental rate will go up, but it will be offset by the fact that the power consumption costs will go down.” The Dark Sky Friendly lights will save the City money in the long run and are good for the environment. Camrose will save

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City street lights will soon be replaced with LED.

Churchmice Players offer brilliant version of Mary Poppins By Murray Green

Talented actresses and actors make the local Churchmice Players version of Mary Poppins a fantastic, can’t miss hit in its own right. Most people can’t imagine the vast number of very talented singers, dancers and musicians it takes to put on a huge production like this. These are all area volunteers that perform at a professional level! Following a script from a major Broadway and Disney classic is a tough act to follow, but the Churchmice Players pull it off with flying colours. Led by Ashley Kambeitz (if you close your eyes and listen a picture of Julie Andrews quickly appears: she is that good) as Mary Poppins and Brian Dumont as Bert, the singing quality is better than most productions of the play. The children Jane and Micheal (on opening night were Holly Enarson and Elise Stang) were simply fantastic. They not only said their lines with conviction, their wonderful voices could be heard ringing in your heart. The supporting cast of Miss Lark (Sheila Worton), Robertson Ay (Don Hutchinson) and Mrs. Corry (Carolyn Olson) added humour to the work and nanny problems that Mrs. Banks (Kate Bishop) and Mr. Banks (Mitch Bell) face in life. Miss Andrew (Carmen Rae Bruce), Mrs. Brill (Karen Huntley) and Admiral Boom (Brad Moshuk) stole moments of the show with

simply fantastic lines and voices. You will remember the famous film where children Jane and Michael, of the wealthy and uptight Banks family, are faced with the prospect of getting a new nanny. They are pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins. The show goes on a journey of fantastical adventures with Mary and Bert, while the child siblings try to gain some of their nanny’s sunny attitude. The local musicians led by director Art Fadum and conductor Heidi Schwonik were right on cue and added strong depth and support to the great cast. The Churchmice Players’ version of Mary Poppins is directed by Sylvia Lyons. She does a great job of pulling everyone together after many days with long hours of rehearsal. She molds each character, about 40 of them, into playing their part well on stage. The only thing I would have changed to this brilliant version, is to shorten the three-hour production a bit to keep everyone on the edge of their seat from beginning to end. Four more shows of this supercalifragilistexpedialdocious play will be held. Shows are on Feb. 15, 16, 17 and 18. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive.ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Report to the C Message from Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital It has been a productive year for Covenant Health and St. Mary’s Hospital. Covenant Health celebrated Legacy Day on November 27 at all of our Covenant sites to honor our heritage and recognize the contributions of our founding sisters. This year, our Legacy day celebration was blessed with a meaningful and reflective presentation by Sister Jeannette Filthaut, founding Sister of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul, Kingston, Ontario. Sister Jeannette captivated the audience with her humorous stories; while highlighting the true history surrounding St. Mary’s Hospital. As I reflect on the talent and the time our volunteers offer to St. Mary’s Hospital, it truly shows their dedication and commitment to the Hospital and to our Community. Last year the Volunteer theme was “Volunteers are the roots of our communities”. On behalf of Administration, staff members and physicians, we want our volunteers and Community and Foundation Board members who are also volunteers, to know how appreciated their time, efforts and compassion truly are. This year to acknowledge our volunteers, St. Mary’s Hospital planted four trees to honor and celebrate the work of our volunteers. Our volunteers have donated 4,817 hours at St. Mary’s Hospital. As we embark on 2017, I am encouraged as I am so fortunate to work with such a highly skilled team of professionals who are dedicated to providing compassionate quality health care, advocating Cherylyn Antymniuk for those most vulnerable and networking to provide Dr. Art Jaroni Site Administrator Medical Director better services to our community.

Accomplishments

Those we serve

Due to the generosity of our St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Board our community will see the redevelopment of the emergency department non-patient area. The renovation will improve patient access and flow in the emergency department. Emergency staff and physicians were engaged in recognizing the patient/staff flow issues and identifying solutions. The emergency department will remain open during the renovation which is planned to start in the spring of 2017. This year, Covenant Health launched The Vital Beat, our new digital newsroom and a website alive with stories of our mission and legacy, our leading work and our walk with patients, residents and families. Please take time to visit the website at www.thevitalbeat.ca. Visit http:// www.thevitalbeat.ca/news/big-impact-small-st-marys-hospital-orthopedic-team/ for a St. Mary’s story featuring Dr. Kumar and our orthopedic team.

St. Mary’s received generous d community businesses as follows:

New services and supports

Path to Home is a care model that was implemented at St. Mary’s Hospital one year ago. Path to Home is designed to better prepare patients and families with their transition from hospital back to the community. It focuses on the quality of our patients’ experiences by formalizing the admission; planning for a positive transition by coordinated discharge activities. The goal is to create more standardized and consistent communication with all team members and their patients. Path to Home is designed to proactively plan and coordinate care to those we serve. As an inpatient you will experience the following changes with Path to Home: • Bedside report requesting patient consent with all staff shift changes • Nurses assigned to your care • Nurses performing patient safety checks on equipment at shift report • Daily whiteboard updates

St. Mary’s was excited to announce that the upgrade to our helipad became operational on December 20, 2016. The helipad can accommodate both STARS helicopters, the BK117 and the larger AW139. The ability to have all medivac helicopters land on our site will improve patient access to critical care transport. St. Mary’s Hospital emergency staff and the inpatient Heart and Stroke clinic began the atrial fibrillation identification project in July 2012. The Atrial Fibrillation project involves screening all patients presenting to the emergency department over the age of 18. The Atrial Fibrillation screening involves taking a 60 second pulse check to detect undiagnosed Atrial Fibrillation as well as other potentially life threatening arrhythmias. To our surprise nearly 25% of all positive atrial fibrillation cases identified were patients between the ages of 18 and 65. On average, approximately three new cases of atrial fibrillation are detected each month in our emergency department. The goals of the atrial fibrillation are stroke prevention, reduction of health system costs and continuity of patient care. Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital is the FIRST acute care emergency department in Alberta to implement the 60 second pulse check. Our Obstetric team has had a very busy year with approximately 30 babies delivered each month. Our team is excited to announce that we will be expanding to have a third labor and delivery suite. The construction will commence in the spring of 2017.

Accreditation is a process that helps our organization meet the challenges of the future. In October 2016, accreditation focused on emergency, medicine and critical care. The results of the survey indicated that Covenant Health met 98% of the criteria in the Accreditation Standards document and all the required operational practices were met. Surveyors did not visit St. Mary’s Hospital this year; however, they highlighted Covenant Health as an organization that goes beyond the requirements of the Qmentum Accreditation program by attaining accreditation with Exemplary standing and demonstrating excellence in quality improvement with an emphasis on improving the patient and family journey throughout Covenant Health facilities. Rude restores 1949 Ford old family truck By Murray Green

John Rude is very sentimental when it comes to his restored 1949 Ford F-47 pickup truck. His dad bought it brand new before he was married and it performed well for many years. Fast-forward a few decades and John discovered the truck on a family member’s yard and inquired about restoring it to its former glory. ‘The truck was originally from my dad’s side and I know he purchased it new. Before my mom and dad met, the truck mysterious ended up on my grandmother’s place, which was my mom’s side. Theoretically, it has been in our family since it was purchased. That is what makes it so special,” recalled John. “I saw it at my grandmother’s place (in the bush) when I was 12 years old. My father and myself brought it home and got it back to a road-worthy state, so I could drive it at 14 with a learner’s licence,” he explained. “At that time, between my age of 14 and 16, it went through some minor alterations. When I was 16 or 17, it received its first new paint job. From there it has progressed through three or four different stages of improvements.” Originally it was purple with black fenders. “Just over a year ago I had it painted again to rose metallic with blue pearl to give it a copper look. I just really liked the colour and it appealed to me.” The truck came with a 239 V-8 Ford flathead engine with a three-speed transmission. John upgraded the driving with a 351 Cleveland Ford engine from

a 1970 Mustang with a matching automatic transmission. “I wanted it to be more modern, have more power and be more reliable. The motor and transmission came from my father’s auto wrecking yard,” said John. “The entire body has been re-worked. It has had a full frame off restoration not once, but twice.” He has taken it to several shows throughout the years and has done well by bringing home various trophies. “Prior to this build, it won in Calgary back in 1988. The show was at the second highest tier in North America and I won top truck,” he said proudly. John liked the auto industry and enjoyed fixing old vehicles. Since this truck was sentimental, it was even more appealing. “I really like the truck and probably would have restored one like it anyway.” The 1949 looks like an old-style truck from the outside, but features modern technologies inside. “I have air conditioning, power locks, a new stereo, disc brakes and electric wipers. I wanted the old truck with modern features to drive it and show it.” He trailers the truck to shows to save his paint. “The clean up to drive it to shows or on a rainy day isn’t worth it. It is pretty easy to get rock chips and you don’t want that. I put my heart and soul into the vehicle. I showed care and paid attention to detail. I took it out on Oct. 23, my mom’s birthday, and gave her a ride. Unfortunately it rained, but I didn’t care that day. It was the first time she rode in it, so it was a treat.”

Murray Green, Camrose Booster John Rude, with daughter Mikaila, show his 1947 Ford F-47 pickup truck that he completely restored. He wanted to keep it looking original, but added some modern conveniences.

built a wood insert for me. I wanted that to look sharp, but it was a lot of work.” The plan is to keep the truck in the family. “I hope

He even restored the wood in the truck bed, which is one of the most tedious jobs in restoration. “My dad’s twin brother

my son takes it over one day and I’d be honoured if it could stay in our family. That would mean a lot to me.”

CCHS are number one on the court By Murray Green

It’s official. The Camrose Composite High School Trojans senior boys basketball team are ranked number one in the province after winning the Spruce Grove tournament and the number two squad. “I’m quite proud of these young men with their hard work and dedication that they have put into the game. The sacrifices that they have made for what is best for the team is to be commended and it is one of those seasons that I don’t want to see end,” said an excited Jody Watson. The basketball team didn’t have time to think about it by playing five games in six days. Over these six days they traveled to Rocky Mountain House on Jan. 30 (ranked in the top 15 in the province) and came out on top with a 67-52 win. Thursday (Feb. 2) they traveled to Sylvan Lake to take on the eighth ranked team in the province and despite some outstanding shooting by the other team, CCHS came out on top with a gritty 73-64 win. Friday they traveled to St. Peter the Apostle in Spruce Grove where they played another top 15 provincially ranked team in the St. Albert Hawks and won on tired legs 62-34. Saturday they traveled back up to St. Peter the Apostle to battle the number four team in the province from Airdrie, George MacDougall. The team won that one in thrilling

fashion winning with free throws at the end and a great defensive stop to win by one point. This meant that the number one team in the province would have to face the number two team in the province in the tournament final. This was a fantastic game with lead changes happening often. The Camrose boys came out on top 82-80 to defend their number one ranking provincially. “It gave them the experience of what a provincial final could be like. The atmosphere was great for the boys. They got to play a great game in front of a hostile crowd. “It was kind of surreal to play and know that there were college coaches there looking for players. Made us feel like we were in the NCAA,” added coach Watson. CCHS went against the top ranked 3A teams and came out on top. “It has made each and every player better for it. Sure we could have taken easy games and got easy wins, but that would not make us better individually or as a team. We want to challenge our players both in practice and in games. We don’t want the easy road, we want to make sure that we compete.” Looking for even more of a challenge, CCHS is in a tournament in Calgary to battle some of the top 4A teams in the province. The final home league game is on Feb. 21 against Stettler.

Jane was born in the Netherlands on November 4, 1925 as Janke Huisman, the middle child of nine. Jane married Willem Scholler in September 1950 and had a daughter, Patricia, followed by a son, Ronald. She and her husband and children came to Canada around 1960, and eventually became Canadian citizens. They settled in Camrose, where they looked after many special needs foster children. Their last foster child came to them in 1966 -- they named her Brenda Lee and adopted her. Jane’s youngest brother Bill also lives in Alberta, as well as his son Ben (Winnie) and his daughter Jennifer (Vince) and their children; and another brother Dick lives in Australia with his wife Marian and their children and grandchildren. Jane has numerous relatives in Holland and all over the world. Jane spent her last nine months in Sunrise Village, Camrose where she made many friends with staff and residents. Jane enjoyed the outdoors and spent many happy summers camping at Miquelon Lake or at a cabin at Buffalo Lake. During the 1980s, Jane was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and, in 1996, she married Edward Erickson, a widower with two sons David and Royce and a daughter Sandra. Ed and Jane enjoyed their years together, traveling in their motor home, visiting friends throughout Alberta and BC, and living in their cabin at Tillicum Beach. Jane received tremendous support and friendship from many people over the years, and her dearest friends are Stan and Pat Bell, who have always treated her with inexhaustible kindness. Over the changing years, they have sought to make her life as comfortable as if she was their own mother. The family is extremely grateful. Jane’s eldest daughter Tricia died in 2012, and her sister-inlaw Gina in 2016. She is survived by her son Ron; her daughter Brenda (Henry); her stepsons David (Enid) and Royce (Dawn); her stepdaughter Sandra (Reinhard); all of their children and grandchildren; her grandchildren Russ (Nicole), Michelle (Reno), Vince (Stephanie) and Jessica (Adam); and her great-grandchildren Ally, Aurora, Denali, Eloic, Grayson, Teigan, Carson, Alora, Hailey and Emery.

It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Evelyn Nelson Evelyn was born in Tofield to Albert and Myrtle Sutton and raised on the Sutton family farm. She attended Bardo School. Evelyn met Leroy Nelson, the love of her life, at a dance and they were married in 1946. They were blessed with their two children Dianne and Brian. Evelyn worked side by side with Leroy on the farm. She also worked off the farm at Meraw’s Store, Brager’s Transit Mix, and Stoney Creek Lodge. Evelyn really stepped into her own when she became the director of Camrose and District Support Services. She worked passionately in this position and helped establish and worked with the Camrose Women’s Shelter, Camrose Food Bank, Mothers’ Day Out programs, preschools and Family Life Education programs. Evelyn and Leroy helped establish Family Camp for families who weren’t able to afford a holiday together. She later worked for the provincial government, coordinating services for Zone 4. Many of the smaller rural communities found Evelyn to be a great ally and promoter of their needs to the Provincial Government. Evelyn continued in this position until her retirement in 1991. Evelyn was a community organizer, 4-H and Hi C youth group leader, church leader, an avid gardener, world traveler, free spirit, generous friend and neighbour and the best mother ever. Evelyn was a devoted wife, a loving mother and an inspiration to her grandchildren. She was a healer with a Level 2 certificate in the art of Reiki healing. She loved music, dancing and drumming. Evelyn enjoyed camping and loved to paint. She was proud to have a painting included in a national calendar of senior art in 2017. Evelyn was a fierce feminist who championed the rights of women, particularly those who were often ignored or put down by the larger society. She demonstrated the power of believing in yourself, the value of knowing yourself and showed that women could achieve great things by coming together and assisting each other. She was a proud supporter of the arts and was an early supporter of the Bailey Theater. Evelyn loved children and helped raise and support many youth – both family and friends. She was a strong financial supporter of the Camrose Boys and Girls Club. In her later years, Evelyn struggled with dementia which, in her case, manifested itself in a loss of speech. She found this extremely frustrating as she had spent so much of her life connecting with other people. She passed away peacefully after spending her last morning on earth helping other residents in wheelchairs get around, and her last afternoon laughing and enjoying floor curling. She will be deeply missed. Evelyn is survived by daughter Dianne (Hans) Rommel; son Brian (Colleen) Nelson; grandchildren (Sylvia, Marina, Penny and Sean); grandchildren (Jaron, Amy, Sam and Kaiden); sisters Eunice Parent and Wanda Craigen; and brother Randy Sutton. Evelyn was predeceased by husband Allan “Leroy”; and brothers Doug and Larry Sutton. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from Camrose United Church with Rev. Liz Carter-Morgan officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Bailey Theatre, Camrose or Camrose and District Boys and Girls Club. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

CAMROSE FOOD BANK needs your help! Earn Rose City Farmers’ Market bucks for each donation 1-6 every Thursday, Duggan Mall. Call Allan at 780-678-0349 for info or tables.

PERSONAL DRINKING A PROBLEM? Alcoholics Anonymous, call 780-672-9406 or 780-608-8798. LOST THAT LOVING FEELING? Find it with a personal ad in The Camrose Booster classifieds. Ph. 780-672-3142.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Enjoy Children’s Choirs and delightful desserts By Murray Green

The Camrose and Area Children’s Choirs presents their 11th annual dessert concert fundraiser “Oh, Canada!” on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Camrose United Church (4829-50 Street). Both junior and senior Children’s Choirs continue their tradition of putting on a dessert show each February. This year, in keeping with the very special theme of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Canada, they will celebrate with songs from across our nation, from founding peoples to voyageurs to famous personalities. “Come join us for an evening celebrating some of the cultures and his-

tory that bring us together as a nation,” said director Joy-Anne Murphy. “Enjoy homemade desserts and the joy of singing such Canadian classics as Lukey’s Boat and the French Canadian J’entends le moulin (I hear the windmill). We’ll sing songs that celebrate the geography of our great country, with music from shore to shore. We’ll also celebrate what makes us a nation—from First Nations to French Immersion, from folk songs to new works by Canadian composers.” Tickets are available at the door. Children five and under are admitted free. For more information contact 780-672-3372.

Police received a complaint from a concerned relative that she could not reach her aunt that resides in rural Camrose and this is very unlike her. Member made a patrol to the residence and located the Aunt in her vehicle after she had locked herself out of the house. The aunt was taken by ambulance to the hospital as there were some health concerns. Police were advised that culprits had broken the locks off of rural mailboxes in the area of Range Road 194 and possibly stole mail. Canada Post was advised. This is unfortunately a reoccurring problem in the rural areas. If you have any information, contact your local RCMP Detachment at 780672-3342 during business hours, or Crime Stoppers Tips at 1-800-222-8477.
