Gregg Shute may be gone, but clearly he is anything but forgotten. “The Shuter Crue” – people who were touched by the amazing life of Gregg, who perished in a car accident in May of 2009 – will once again host
Shuter Tribute Day
in an effort to commemorate his unselfish lifestyle and passion for life. Held every other year, Shuter Tribute Day has raised, and continues to raise, an impressive amount of money for youth who want to participate or excel in the fields of art or music. Small rural schools in Daysland, Round Hill, Viking and Ryley have each been able to afford new sound equipment or musical instruments from this enduring initiative. As well, children who could not otherwise afford drama club, band fees or accessories to allow participation have been helped in significant numbers. This unique celebration of a loved one’s life continues to grow beyond even the most optimistic expectation. It will again feature Big Smoke Revival (a Camrose Band) as well as Five of Diamonds (Hanna-based musicians) and talented youth from the Valhalla music program from Viking School. Kodiaks ready to start playoffs By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks are preparing themselves to start the playoffs on the road. Camrose dropped a 4-2 contest to Okotoks on Feb. 18 that set them back as far as hoping for home ice advantage. The Oilers outscored Camrose 2-1 in both the first and second periods to record the win. Bryson Traptow and
Devan Reed replied for the Kodiaks. Goalie Patrick Gora stopped 47 of 51 shots in the Camrose net. The Kodiaks fired 26 shots at the Oilers’ net. The Sherwood Park Crusaders scored a goal in each period to record a 3-1 victory over Camrose on Feb. 17. The lone Kodiaks marker went to Colin Schmidt. Gora
had an easier night by turning away 21 of 23 shots directed his way. The last goal was an empty-net tally. The next home game will be a playoff game in the EnCana Arena. Two Kodiaks were nominated for AJHL awards. Patrick Gora was selected for the top goaltender award. Kyler Kupka was nominated for the rookie of the year honours.

Camrose Police Service Const. Belanger named Top Cop By Murray Green
The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club have named Camrose Police Service Const. Adam Belanger as the fourth recipient of the Top Cop award. He will be presented with the award at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino on Saturday, March 18 beginning at 6 p.m. Const. Belanger is a positive role model and mentor to the youth in our community. He is in his 10th year with the Camrose Police Service, presently assigned to traffic division. He has been appointed Regimental Sergeant Major and is in charge of ceremonial duties for the police. “It is a huge honour to be nominated and recognized. It is certainly humbling to say the least. I look at the past recipients and myself and we don’t do this for recognition, we do it to help the community and its what we love to do,” he explained. Const. Belanger is the pistol armourer participating in the maintenance and servicing of the police pistols and assists with annual training. He is proof of the involvement between the youth of our community and members of the CPS. He has volunteered countless hours of his own time during his 14 years of coaching football for the Camrose Composite High School Trojans team and has helped coach the Battle River Shock midget team. “Helping youth at the high school level is so satisfying to me because you see the

growth of individuals. You see them maturing both on and off the field, and becoming young men and women. It’s a great age to work with,” he added. Coach Belanger created and runs Open Football, a program that is a football
themed off season skills camp that is free and open to players aged eight to university age wishing to try football, or develop their skills. “I’ve seen some great successes where former players have gone on to be a part of the community and have
successful careers. A lot of my coaching staff are former players who have come back and helped coach as well. I’m lucky to see that growth from players to coaches and watch them give back what they have learned along the way.” He has coached on
numerous football teams including the Alberta Senior Bowl team, the bantam Coyotes and the Battle River Shock. He has guest coached with both the junior Edmonton Huskies and Wildcats. Belanger has had players advance to play junior football and university football. He is there for his players when they need a positive influence, even inspiring some to take up the role of coach. “Seldom in life you do anything by yourself. When you are at work, you work as a team and that is learned through activities such as sports,” said Const. Belanger. In addition, he has coached U4 to U6 soccer, assists with the Charity Check Stop, the Bike Rodeo, the police Dare booth at Jaywalkers, CCHS Welcome Student Days, Dairy Queen Miracle Treat Day, McHappy Days, Tim Hortons Camp Day, and assists the Royal Canadian Legion’s Sgt. at Arms planning and executing the Remembrance Day Parade. He has played on the police team against the Special Olympics athletes in basketball and baseball. The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club is dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. The public is invited to join the community celebration of a supper and program. Doty shares jazz music, basketball memories in Camrose By Murray Green
Ellen Doty is no stranger to Camrose. She often accompanied her King’s University team to Camrose to take on the Augustana Vikings in basketball. However, it is not her athletic abilities that is giving her chances to tour Alberta again, it is her music that is bringing her back to the city and to the Bailey Theatre for a concert on Friday, March 3 at 8 p.m. “I will be joined by wonderful sax player Eli Bennett and guitarist Josh Crowhurst, who I have been working with for many years,” Ellen said about her band. “We take the audience on a journey where we will laugh and cry together. I’ll share some of my original music, a lot of stories about my life, some jazz standards and songs that people will know as well.” She is a soulful Canadian vocalist and songwriter with a world-class voice. Her music is rooted in jazz, yet seamlessly incorporates elements of other genres including folk and pop. A true storyteller whose works are as intimate and as personal as their handwritten lyrics, Ellen’s immense talent for songwriting is only

complemented by her stunning vocals. Rich, sultry and sweet, Ellen’s voice draws listeners in and takes them on an unforgettable journey. “I like to play a good mix of jazz. Some of it is laid back, but there are certainly a lot of moments of high energy as well. We’ll have a bit of a roller coaster ride,” she said. Originally from Okotoks, Ellen has been a performer since age five. “I sang and played piano at my Grade 1 class talent show performing “Can You Feel
the Love Tonight” by Elton John. My grandmother loved across the street from Nat King Cole in Los Angeles, so I really love his music. I always include a song or two from him in my sets. He influenced my music, so I like to go back and honour him. I also like soul and Motown music.” After playing for the Eagles, she went on to study vocal jazz at Carleton University in Ottawa and performed in their prestigious Talent Showcase. She’s had
the opportunity to work with many of her jazz heroes thus far including Al Kay, Pat Labarbera, Bobby Shew, Dave Mancini and PJ Perry. “I started out being more jazz focused, but now I’ve incorporated my other influences, which allows me to be more of who I am and I like that. People call it jazz, pop and folk all mashed together. All of the music I love have become part of that fabric, which is really neat,” she said. “As an artist it takes time to discover your own voice. People have a sense of when you have a personal connection with the music.” In 2013, Ellen was the recipient of the Outstanding Soloist award from the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho and she completed a Banff Centre Artist Residency for Collaborative Song-Writing at the prestigious Banff Centre. In May 2013, she received an album production grant for her debut album from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. “I’m from a smaller community, so going to places that I can really relate to are fun,” she said of getting out of Edmonton and Calgary and going to stops such as Camrose. “Same as in basketball,
it was fun getting on the road and going to new places to meet different people. It would be neat to see some people I played against,” she added. In another local tie, Ellen also connected with Karl Schwonik of Gwynne earlier in her career when he played drums for some of her shows. In 2014, it was a huge success for Ellen as she released her much-anticipated album Gold in May, which broke the top 10 on several jazz charts in Canada. The record features 10 of Ellen’s original compositions, as well as a song by Toronto songwriter Kyle Zavitz. Her co-writers include Oliver Miguel, Crowhurst, Kyle Zavitz, Conrad Good and Danny Michel. “I just finished recording my second full length album, but it won’t be released until later this year. Absolutely, I’ll be playing some of the new songs from the upcoming album,” she added. The Hay Lakes Post Office was subject to a break and enter around 3 a.m. This file is under investigation. Police conducted a traffic stop in the County of Camrose. The two male suspects inside threw drugs out the passenger window in an attempt to conceal illegal activity. The small baggy of elicit drugs got caught in a nearby tree branch. The males were subsequently arrested and charged. RCMP responded to two dangerous driving complaints, one false alarm and two reports of suspicious vehicles.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Learning to walk in the dark
I’m so appreciating the days getting longer now. But I’m also reflecting on being “in the dark.” When I was little I was scared of the dark. I know (because people have told me) that I am not the only one. I still remember that terrible walk from the light switch to the bed. I’d turn out the light, cross the bedroom and jump into bed from as far away as possible so the monster hand didn’t reach out from under the bed and grab me by the ankle. I’d dive under the covers and peer out. The half-open closet door hid nameless shapeless terrors; unknown bad things, scary things that would ooze out and do harm. From an early age, I have preferred the light: daytime rather than nighttime, sunny rather than cloudy, clarity rather than ambiguity. I have wanted to hide from, be protected from, turn away from, the darkness. At first, “darkness” meant simply the absence of physical light. As I grew older, “darkness” also acquired symbolic meaning – dark emotions, dark thoughts, dark actions. And then one day, I was jarred. Relentless? A friend from the coast was visiting me. We had, in my mind, perfect summer weather – sunshine every day, blue skies, bright and sunny. One morning it was grey, raining and overcast. I was disappointed. My friend came downstairs from the guest room and said, “Oh thank God! A rainy day. I was so tired of that relentless sunshine!” It had never occurred to me that light could be “relentless.” In the dark
When I remember painful experiences, many were prolonged unnecessarily because I kept myself “in the dark” about things I didn’t want to see. Some of those things were external – events and people around me. When I was willing to look deeply, most of those things were also internal. At the root, what I did not want to see within myself kept being reflected back in the outside world until I was courageous enough to let myself see it, or I was forced into seeing it because I had turned away for so long that a niggle became a crisis. I had to go into the darkness to see the light.

I want to express a concern that has been on my mind for some time now. Since the NDP was voted in and has assumed the political power in our province, the residents of this great province have had various situations shoved down our throats with no recourse for the residents who oppose their logic. Stop and think about what is happening in our province, and as well the whole earth. I don’t believe anyone living in this world has any intentions on not leaving this planet in great shape for our children and their children and so on. We are not illiterate, nor are we selfish. The world has, for some time now, been dependent on hydrocarbons and petroleum products. As far as I know the world hasn’t developed an alternative product to replace
all the items that are produced by either petroleum or hydrocarbon sources. Some of the auto producers are going the way of electric cars. Great, now we must find a solution to supply power to charge the batteries, so now when the owners of these vehicles get home from work they will be plugging in their vehicles to charge them. This is normally the highest usage of power in a day. Are we going to experience brown out periods in our power distribution system? What about the cost to dispose of these batteries after their five-year service has run out? As of now I have been informed the cost to replace those batteries is around $3,000 per battery. Not cheap to charge every night either. You’re saying we have solar power and wind power. The wind power and mirror generated power has been slammed by the animal activists because the birds are dying by flying into the blades of the wind power or being fried in flight due to the mirror reflected heat in the mirror fields. Guess where the products come from to build these power sources? That’s right, from the petroleum industry and the hydrocarbon industry. In fact, if you are open minded enough you will realize that every product you touch in your daily life has been touched by both industries. The food
you eat was developed and then transported to the store and to your home by truck. The clothes on your back, the asphalt roads you travel on. Factories that used high heat to develop their products have been using both petroleum and hydrocarbon products. When there is some other product developed that uses neither hydrocarbon products nor petroleum products; then and only then; we should consider changing our current daily products and replacing them with the new age products we will use daily as today. A little common sense will go a long way here. The hydrocarbon capture system developed by the Saskatchewan government in Estevan captures more carbon from the coal fired power plant than will be produced by power plant fueled on natural gas. The NDP government wants to convert our coal fired plants to natural gas powered. The money spent on converting and not gain anything is a waste. Both the federal liberals (as they have decided that coal will be eliminated by the year 2030) and the provincial NDP want us to revert to living the life as our predecessors did; Neanderthals. On this planet we have light and dark in equal measure. No matter where we live, at whatever latitude, over the period of a year we experience light and dark in equal measure. Perhaps there’s a message here. In the darkness, we can rest. In the darkness, seeds begin to sprout and grow roots and leaves. In the darkness, dreams are born. In the darkness, ideas can percolate and take shape. If we are willing to explore the darkness, we discover gifts we could not imagine when we are blinded by the light. Walking in the dark
So how do we walk in the dark? Carefully, gingerly, gently at first, feeling our way. And how do we learn to walk in the dark? Two favourite quotes provide a hint. Asp looks back on a century of memories By Lori Larsen
Not many people can say they have experienced a century of memories, but Herb Asp, from Kingman, who celebrated his 100th birthday on Feb. 23 with generations of family and friends, can. To begin with, Herb shared his secret to longevity, which he graciously said lied in his devotion to God. “I am a Baptist and my wife (Agda, since passed away) was Baptist,” said Herb. “There was a small church in Kingman (Kingman First Baptist Church) right next door to our house.” Herb and his wife both attended the church and in 1956 as a result of a growing congregation, the German Baptist Church in Camrose was purchased by the Kingman church and moved to Kingman. “I rode on top of the church as it was moving,” smiled Herb. “About four or five years ago we had to add on to the church and now the church is full of people.” Something Herb was proud to say as it is apparent that the church and the role it plays in his life is extremely important. Herb also spoke of being in the army for three and a half years and spending two years overseas serving our country. “I spent one year in Italy. The first and the fifth divisions were down in Italy the other three divisions were still back in England. They had the idea that we were on a holiday in Italy. “First of all the Germans had two lines, so they (Canadian soldiers) had to break through. Then they (Germans) moved up and built a line way up through Florence and the Canadians were brought up there to break through that line. “After we finished in Italy they moved us up to Holland.” Herb noted that things in the world have changed and that despite serving in the army during the war, life in Camrose (Canada) back then was far more peaceful. “It has changed quit a bit in our world now we almost have continuous war.” Simpler days Life in and around Camrose in the early part of the 1900s seemed so much simpler when listening to Herb reminisce. “I can remember we had some relatives living here (Camrose) over by what is the seniors’ centre now. “I was four-years-old my mother was visiting those relatives and they lost me,” Herb quietly laughed. “I was over by the rail-

road station over on the west end where the trains came in at that time.” With little fear of being abducted and less fear of being struck by a vehicle a child wandering off in those days didn’t strike the panic it would today. “There wasn’t a lot of cars then and things were much safer.” That led Herb to speak about the greatest change he has seen in his 100 years. “The cars,” he paused. “That was the beginning of big change from horse and buggy to vehicles. It was slow change because even at the cost of cars then,
not everybody could afford them” Compared to a world now where almost everyone owns or has access to a vehicle, back then it was even unheard of for women to drive a car. “Back in the 30s and 40s they (women) started to drive because the war was on and men were gone. Then young people could get cars and it sure changed things.” While Herb didn’t say the change was good, or bad he did note that the introduction of the motor vehicle had a great impact
on how the world would change. Herb also mentioned how passenger trains seem to be a thing of the past. “It used to be passenger trains were running all the time and you just don’t see those anymore.” He eluded to the fact that it is a wonderful part of the past that generations today are missing out on something, that there again the ease of motor vehicles has changed. “When we lived in Hardisty at the time they put Highway 13 through Sunburst Bus lines went out to Hardisty.
“I used to go visit my aunt and uncle down in Daysland and when I wanted to go back I knew what time the bus was going to be there so I would just go out and stand at the side of the road and it would stop for me.” Service station Herb and his brother started out as truckers in the early days then eventually ran a service station in Kingman. “We began by selling gasoline in barrels, but people were running out of gas so finally we put in a pump and that was the start of a service station. “Young people would get cars because they were working the pipeline and the odd one would come along and want to know if they could charge. “I would say yes you can charge, but how would you get to work if you didn’t have gasoline and they would say they couldn’t go. So I would say when you get your pay cheque, you pay me, if you don’t pay me the first time how are you going to get to work.” That type of honour system worked back then, the same may not be true today. Family man Herb spoke fondly of his wife, Agda, and how she was an amazing seamstress, and the memories they created together building a family, a daughter and a son and eventually 11 great grandchildren, who all performed to a packed house during his birthday celebration at Rosealta Lodge. “My wife and I travelled a lot,” recalled Herb. “We had friends down in Peru who we visited and we went to Israel and Jordan.” Both Herb and Agda were from Sweden and made the trip back to the home country three times. “We saw a lot of the world.” On Thursday, Feb. 23, Herb’s birthday, family and friends, residents and staff of Rosealta, Mayor Norm Mayer and community members filled the community room at Rosealta in celebration of Herb and his honourable passage into the century club.

You and your spouse are enjoying your golden years together and share pretty much everything. The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) recognizes that sharing is caring, so they allow senior couples to split pension income. This can offer you big savings on your tax bill, since you can transfer up to 50 per cent of your qualifying pension income to your spouse or common-law partner. How do I know if we qualify for pension income splitting? You and your spouse or common-law partner must both be residents of Canada on Dec. 31 of the tax year being filed. In the case of a senior who passed away during the year, they must have been a resident of Canada immediately before death. You need to be married or in a common-law partnership. You cannot be separated for a period of 90 days or more that includes the end of the year. What kind of pension income is eligible? Income from a registered pension plan will qualify regardless of your age: The CRA website has specific criteria on what’s considered eligible, but it’s good to know that any income that qualifies for the pension income tax credit can also be considered eligible income for tax splitting. This means that transferring income to your spouse
could allow them to claim up to $2,000 through the pension income credit, on top of tax savings you’ll receive through splitting income. Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) withdrawals, registered annuities and interest from non-registered annuities: These will qualify if you’re 65 and over. What kind of income isn’t eligible? Old age security and CPP benefits don’t qualify as eligible pension income. Investment income doesn’t qualify, but converting an investment to a Guaranteed Investment Annuity from a life insurance company would make it eligible for the pension income tax credit. Make sure to check in with your financial planner before transferring investments. Who should split with whom? If you and your spouse have eligible income, you need to decide who will be the one allocating income and who will receive the income. Splitting income allows money to be moved from one spouse’s higher tax bracket into another’s lower one to help reduce the overall tax bill, so as a general rule; the person who earns more should allocate their pension income to the lower income earner. If one spouse or common-law partner does not have any qualifying pension income, it may also be beneficial to transfer at least $2,000 so they can ben-
efit from the pension income amount. Is splitting pension income always beneficial? If you’re the spouse with income in the higher tax bracket, you’ll definitely benefit most from transferring income to your partner in a lower tax bracket, especially if you’re subject to Old Age Security clawbacks. Though your tax bill might be reduced, changing your partner’s taxable income can create other adjustments to watch for. Let’s say your partner is in a nursing home: their housing fees might increase if they happen to be calculated based on their income, so bear that in mind when considering pension income splitting as an option. Can I meet the deadline? Pension income splitting requests must be made within three years of the filing deadline for the tax year in question, so the deadline for the 2016 tax year is April 30, 2020. If you’ve already filed your return and are now thinking about income splitting as an option, remember that it could change any already assigned benefits, credits and refunds that you might have received. Pension splitting could still be worthwhile in the end, but make sure you check into it in advance to avoid any surprises. Not everyone is eligible for pension income splitting, but if you are, take advantage of this option and save some money on this year’s return.

The campaign encouraged everyone to wear a pink shirt, button or pin as a symbol of their intolerance of any type of bullying whether it be in the workplace, school, home or over the Internet.
Information was presented to city council during the regular council meeting on Feb. 21 on the direction administration should take regarding Mayor and Council remuneration. City of Camrose deputy city manager Kim Isaak provided council with information on remuneration figures from other municipalities and how they compared to that of Camrose. Comparisons were sorted in three different methods, councillor salaries, population and per capita. Salary figures Salaries for Camrose include the mayor salary at $60,952, and for the eight councillors a salary of $19,154 each. At a population of 18,742 the total cost of governance is $214,184 factoring out to $11.43 per capita annually. Figures were provided for 15 other municipalities and included Airdrie, Brooks, Chestermere, Cochrane, Fort Saskatchewan, Grande Prairie, Lacombe, Leduc, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Okotoks, Red Deer, Spruce Grove, St. Albert and Wetaskiwin. In comparison, the salaries for Camrose mayor was the third lowest of the sample group and the salaries for the individual councillors was the second lowest. The figures for Camrose County were provided to administration after the report was completed and will be added to the report. “We asked administration at the last meeting to go out and check comparator communities and that is what they have done and this is what they came up with,” said Mayor Norm Mayer “The question is do we farm this out to an independent group to review and come back with recommendations or do we deal with it internally.” Councillor Wayne Throndson responded. “I don’t think it is optimally something we as councillors should do, nor do I think it is fair to ask administration to set what council gets paid. “It should be looked at every four years, so this would be something for future council not for us and I do think it is something we should consider a three person committee to look at.” Councillor Bill Sears inquired as to how the figures from other municipalities were obtained. Isaak indicated the municipalities used in the report were contacted directly by Camrose administration and that the information came from their (other municipalities) Legislative Services Division.
Councillor Ma x Lindstrand expressed some concern about an independent committee being used.”If we do establish a committee it would be important for us to establish some benchmarks for them to look at because clearly in looking at the statistics we are lagging quite far behind.” City manager Malcolm Boyd commented on Camrose salaries compared to the other municipalities. “If you look at council remuneration compared to the mid-sized cities, Camrose is at the lower end. “The fact that we have a council of nine rather than seven or five has an impact on the cost of governance and the fact that we have a population of 18,000 versus some of the higher populations such as Cochrane or Fort Saskatchewan has an influence.” Councillor Sears responded by saying, “It doesn’t matter how we cut it the report identifies that we were behind and it is going to be hard for us to become even. It would be a fairly big jump. I think we have to start moving towards some equality and maybe the committee will come up with that. We are doing the same amount of work. We don’t pay our MLAs or MPs on how many people they represent. “I really think there is some unfairness between what councillors in the City of Camrose are paid compared to similar jurisdictions and I think we have to have some serious discussion about that and make it fairer to what it is now.” Councillor Throndson also commented on the number of councillors Camrose has compared to the other municipalities in the sample. “Looking at information provided it appears that having eight councillors and a mayor is a bit of an anomaly in Alberta. I wonder if part of the discussion should include a debate as to whether we should move to six councillors and a mayor versus what we have now. We are not alone in having eight councillors and a mayor I just think we are not in the majority anymore in terms of how cities are run.” Besides salaries other considerations with regards to city council and the cost of governance include remuneration in relation to training and conference expenses, out-of-pocket expenses recognizing the time and work expenses of council members attending events such as AUMA and benefits. The matter was set over to the next Committee of Whole meeting pending further discussion.

Old Man Luedecke’s choice of hillbilly instruments such as an infectious old-time banjo and guitar, may suggest he is from an era of times gone by, but the lyrics and melodies he creates are purely modern. Listen carefully between the bluegrass music notes and you can picture Old Man Luedecke in a creaky cabin in the snowy Nova Scotia woods. Chris Luedecke is original, intense, committed and blessed with purity honouring, but not trapped by tradition. His offerings of “My Hands Are On Fire” and “Other Love Songs” are music of the ages. The École Charlie Killam School will be presenting their version of Beauty and the Beast Jr. on May 29 and 30 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. About 30 students ranging from Grade 6 to 8 have been working on the production since October, two afternoons a week. “Belle will be played by Nalyn Tindall (Grade 8) and the Beast is played by Nicole Poepping (Grade 8),” said teacher Sabrina Heydorn, who is heading the production with teacher Rhonda Basque. Two nights of 7 p.m. shows will allow parents and members of the community an opportunity to see the classic play put on by aspiring young drama students. Income tax for seniors By Donna Coombs Camrose SOS program
For many that dreaded season is fast approaching, no not winter, thankfully that season is soon over. I mean income tax season. That necessary evil we all must complete yearly. Without completing this task the federal, or provincial government have no idea of your existence. If they have no idea of your existence then they automatically stop all social payments you may be entitled to as a senior. Many times a year when assessing what programs some of the seniors who attend our office qualify for financially, I will ask to see their tax returns. To which I often get the reply that they don’t pay taxes so they don’t file. Now we have a big problem. We have to file those missing years in taxes before we can apply for Alberta Seniors Financial Assistance or GIS Guaranteed Income Supplement etc. This means a delay of up to 18 months before they may be approved for these programs leaving them struggling financially. Also in
filing your tax returns the two levels of government can get needed information on population density by area, helping them determine how much each area receives in funding for their infrastructure and similar payments. Communities prosper with these funds. All senior financial programs are income tested based on the previous years’ return results. Seniors optical, dental and rental assistance to name but a few are so tested. Clients of AISH and CPP-D (Canada Pension Plan Disability), even OAS (Old Age Security) can eventually be discontinued if the recipient is thought deceased because returns have not been filed regularly. GST and now the new carbon tax refund would be stopped until returns filed. My suggestion is simply file your yearly returns. You never know when you may have to apply for any one of the social benefits available. The SOS Program (Service Options for Seniors) offers a Voluntary income tax program with two volunteers that are willing to help with simple returns.

Parkinson is a neurodegenerative disease affecting motor and nonmotor functions resulting from cells that produce dopamine, a chemical that carries signals between the nerves in the brain, dying. Seniors be aware of Parkinson’s (MS) - One of the diseases that afflicts more people over the age of 65 than younger adults is Parkinson’s Disease. While not exclusive to senior citizens, only 15 per cent of Parkinson’s diagnoses are in people under the age of 50. When many people think of Parkinson’s Disease, they can’t help but think of former boxing great Muhammad Ali or actor Michael J. Fox, both of whom publicly fought their battle with the disease for years. The disease itself still remains a mystery to many, including researchers working hard at understanding just what causes it. Parkinson’s Disease is a brain disorder that occurs when nerve cells in the brain break down. These nerve cells are responsible for producing an important chemical called dopamine, which sends signals to the part of the brain responsible for controlling movement. When these nerve cells are functioning properly, the dopamine enables the brain to let the body’s muscles move smoothly and however the brain wants them to. But when these nerve cells break down, dopamine is not produced, thereby negatively affecting how the body moves. In essence, when these important nerve cells are damaged, the body makes movements on its own, without regard for how a person wants his or her body to move. Unfortunately, the cause of Parkinson’s Disease remains a mystery. While research efforts are ongoing, a concrete cause has yet to be determined. These tests, for instance, could reveal signs of stroke or brain tumor. Treatment can depend on the degree of the symptoms. If symptoms are not affecting daily life, it’s possible a doctor will wait to prescribe medicines until the symptoms begin to impact a person’s quality of life.

W hen Wilf red Breitkreitz saw an advertisement to build your own classic sports car with a kit, he jumped at the opportunity to assemble a 1952 MG TD Roadster. “I purchased a 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle chassis to build the car onto. That is what fit this particular kit,” said Wilf. “It came from Classic Roadsters in Fargo, North Dakota. Along with the kit came instructions on how to build it step for step.” The vehicle is a standard transmission, 1,600 CC engine, rearwheel-drive roadster. The rest of the vehicle arrived at his door step in nine huge boxes. “I had an appointment in Minnesota to go to and, at the airport, they had a model of this car sitting in it. That’s where I got the idea to build one,” he recalled. It represents the state-of-the-art in engine design, transmission and suspension for 1971, with the classic feel of 1952.
“I was still working at the time, so I could only work on it in my spare time,” he said on the project. “I moved to Camrose 10 years ago and I was determined to have it finished before we moved.” It took Wilf several years to build but, in the end, he had a brand new car that represented his urge to own a classic. He avoided the time consuming task of autobody work. “I assembled it and everything fit perfectly. Going step by step, I slowly built it. I was looking for something to do and I was interested in cars, so that is how it started. It appealed to me, so why not make one.” He built the car in Wainwright, but moved to Camrose after his retirement. “I have driven the vehicle very little. I’ve just gone around town. I have been thinking of taking it to the Camrose Cruise, but so far I haven’t,” said Wilf. “Once I get more time, I would like to share it more at car shows.” His new car has no

airbags, no safety belts, no roll bars, no glass side windows and no real roof. The driving experience is about as 1952 as you can get. “I had a lot of fun building this car. I spent many hours on it. I hate to think of how many,” he joked. “The kit at that time to purchase was about $7,000.” After the assemble was completed, Wilf had the car appraised at
more than double of what it cost him. “Today, I estimate it would be worth around $20,000.” Visibility is excellent. There are no blind spots because there’s nothing like a window or a roof to obstruct the view. Air conditioning is natural. Storage is almost nonexistent. There’s no trunk because that is where the motor is. “I filled the front where normal cars have
an engine with sand, to weigh down the front to keep it level,” said Wilf. “I put carpeting in the interior, which was supplied in the kit.” The MG TD has truly classic looks, not unlike early Jaguars and Triumphs. The design is magic. It’s elegant and absolutely stylish, with a disproportionately long hood.

Windshield replacement or repair is a necessity when windshields chip or crack.
Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a piece of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause
chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

Popular Canadian country music performer Lisa Brokop is playing a tribute to one of the legends in the industry in the best way she knows how – through her music. She will be presenting her tribute entitled The Patsy Cline Project at the Daysland Palace Theatre on Thursday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. “I will be singing a lot of the classic Patsy Cline songs,” said Brokop, last fall. “I will be singing the classics, which are also a lot of my favourites. I have a couple of my original songs that I wrote specially for the project, that I will be doing.” Known for one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian music, Brokop has long been admired for her incredible vocal abilities. “Over the years I have changed directions and trying to come up with ideas of what to do next,” explained Brokop, who has appeared on the Big Valley Jamboree stage. “I feel that I have come full circle with this project. When I first got started in the business I sang cover songs until I could write enough of my own. I always loved some of those songs and often included them in concerts. I thought it would be cool to go back and sing some of the first songs I ever performed. My brother came up with the idea and I didn’t know much about it at first. Then I thought this could be really fun.” She has spent the last 20 years singing, songwriting and performing as one of the most nominated and awardwinning female vocalists in Canadian country music history. “I love singing this music. I love seeing the reaction from people because it is nostalgic for them and they remember the songs. Some of the audience is older and can remember when the songs first came out. It is a walk down memory lane,” she said. “I think my voice was made for classic country music, so I love singing it. I like the music and I suppose my mother exposed me to it (Patsy Cline songs). It was there and I don’t remember looking for it,” said Brokop. “It wasn’t until I was researching about her, that I really got to know who Patsy Cline was and I discovered that she was quite an amazing lady. There is such a mystery around her and that is part of the reason she is so intriguing to people.” Tickets are available by calling Sharon at 780374-2403. World Day of Prayer service to be held in Camrose

The theme of “Am I Being Unfair to You?” has been selected by residents of the Philippines for World Day of Prayer 2017 on March 3. A special service will be held at the Ukrainian Catholic Church on Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m. Before the web, there was the World Day of Prayer, an international event that has been connecting people in a meaningful way for almost a century. Despite being planned years in advance, the services have a remarkable record for anticipating major events, such as the refugee crisis (France 2013), the Arab spring (Egypt 2014) and the winding down of the United States embargo against Cuba (Cuba 2016). The secret to this depth and insight is the women who plan and write each World Day of Prayer service. Too often, women have the most intimate experiences of armed conflict, violence, social injustice and human rights violations. Canadians can learn from women of the Philippines, a country on the front lines of climate change, foreign mining and resources interests, regional insurgency and social upheaval due to migration. We can all ask ourselves, “Am I being unfair to you?” On March 3, Christians in more than 170 countries and in 2,000 communities across Canada will gather to learn about, pray for and celebrate with the women of the Philippines through the World Day of Prayer. Sheila Rae Streberg January 6, 1938 ~ February 18, 2017 Sheila Rae Streberg of Camrose passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the age of 79 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children Brad (Dawne) Streberg of Phoenix, Arizona and Mona (Barry) Phillips of Camrose; five grandchildren Shawn Streberg of Phoenix, Arizona, Grayson Streberg of Phoenix, Arizona, Kalyn Wilson (Perry Yurkoski) of Camrose, Karli Phillips of Camrose, and Conrad Phillips of Camrose; brother Vern (Phyllis) Phillips of Edmonton; sister Jerane Germaniak of Leduc; and companion Vernon Linzmeyer of Camrose. Sheila was predeceased by her husband Gerald “Gerry”, infant daughter Susan, and brother Harley Phillips. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from Camrose United Church with Rev. Mary Ann Pastuck and Rev. Liz Carter-Morgan officiating. It is with fond memories that we announce the passing of Carol at the age of 46 after her courageous battle with cancer. Carol was born in Wakaw on March 4, 1970. Carol went to Yellow Creek School and graduated in 1988. Shortly after, she attended Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1990. Her first job was in Camrose, Alberta, where she stayed until she met her fiancé Doug in 2006. She then transferred to the hospital in Red Deer where she worked until her illness. Carol leaves to mourn her friend and fiancé Doug Blatz, along with her dogs Caesar and Pepper and cat Charlie. She also leaves behind her parents David Papish and Shirley Papish; brother Randy; sister Lorie (Shawn) and their daughter Hunter and son Aidan; brother Richard; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. As well, she leaves behind the many friends she has met in her nursing career. Many thanks to Rhonda Hill for not just being an incredible friend, but for helping her with her medical needs towards her journey home. For those who are wishing to make a memorial donation in Carol’s name, the family has asked that they be made out to any SPCA or animal shelter near you. Leroy Simms Leroy Manuel Simms of Camrose, Alberta was born at St. Anthony, Newfoundland on May 7, 1958; he passed away unexpectedly at Regina, SK on February 19, 2017 at the age of 58 years. He is survived by his loving wife Laurie; daughter Alyssa (Mark) Hansen and their daughter Madison; son Aaron (Alyssa); ten siblings; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Florence; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Maxine and Henry Nordstrom. A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose, Alberta. Cremation has taken place. Robert Wayne Nelson December 26, 1945 ~ February 15, 2017 Wayne passed away peacefully at home with his wife and daughter, with the assistance of the MAID team on the evening of February 15, 2017. Robert was born on December 26, 1945 in Vernon, BC, the second of three sons to Bob and Verna Nelson. It was here that he fell in love both with falconry and his wife of 49 years, Alora (White), at the age of 15. Together, they attended UBC where he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree. In 1967, they were married in Vernon and headed to Alberta where they would remain for the rest of his life. It was at the University of Calgary where he obtained his Master of Science in Biology and Doctor of Philosophy in Biology – Behavioural Ecology. His research on Peregrine Falcons started on Langara Island, Haida Gwaii in 1968 and continued for 43 years, probably one of the longest continuing studies by an individual in the bird world. Wayne taught Biology at Camrose Lutheran College from 1979 to 1982. He then worked for the Government of Alberta as a biologist for 25 years, working tirelessly to protect the environment. In retirement, his love of raptors continued through his work wing tagging turkey vultures in central Alberta for the past seven years. Wayne’s life was spent as a scientist, falconer, avid reader, writer and researcher, photographer, lover of art and music, loving husband, father and Pa. Wayne is survived by his wife Alora; daughter Jennifer Willes; and granddaughters Olivia and Vienna. He is also survived by brothers Charles (Marlene) and Dennis (Patti) of Surrey, BC; and four nephews,

one niece and their families, all of the lower mainland, BC. Wayne has chosen to not have a public memorial. Alora and their family will join together at Langara Island this summer, where Wayne began his lifelong study of Peales Peregrines in 1968. Wayne read every day of his life and, in tribute, he requested that any donations be made to the Camrose Public Library, Augustana University Library Science Department or the University of Calgary Science Department. In Wayne’s own words, as quoted in The Alberta Falconry Associating 2014 Journal assembled by Alex Stokes, “Some days are just spectacularly beautiful, exciting and memorable. And many of those are falconry and wild raptor days. My years have seen a number of those days – but not enough! From my early teens onward, the pursuit of these two, closely-related, magnificent moments has guided much of my life.” Special thanks to Tanya and the three doctors (of Wetaskiwin, Ponoka and Calgary) who made Wayne’s passing peaceful and on his own terms. MacWilliam named first MacEwan hockey star

Former Camrose Minor Hockey and current women’s player Jill MacWilliam was the MacEwan Griffins first star of the week for her performance in leading the Griffins to a pair of wins over the Olds College Broncos in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) games on Feb. 16 and 17. MacWilliam garnered two goals and an assist in two wins over Olds that secured home-ice advantage for the Griffins in the first round of the ACAC playoffs. It’s the first three-star selection of the season for MacWilliam at MacEwan. The speedy rookie from Hay Lakes scored twice for the Griffins during a 3-1 victory over Olds, before chipping in an assist in another 3-1 win over Olds. MacWilliam and linemates Shyla Jans and Jessi Rampton racked up eight points during the weekend sweep of Olds that secured home-ice advantage for the Griffins in the first round of the playoffs. The three points gave MacWilliam six goals and 11 points in 20 games, with eight of those points coming in the last 10 games during the second semester. MacWilliam and her linemates advanced to a playoff series against the Red Deer College Queens, Feb. 23 to 26. MacEwan and SAIT moved on to the ACAC final.

Here is a brief backgrounder about the carbon levy, natural gas and electricity bills. I have received replies from Direct Energy, the Utilities Consumer Advocate and constituents about rising utility bills. On your natural gas bill the carbon levy is only one component of your overall price. As it is based on the ‘amount’ of natural gas consumed, it will increase during the winter and decrease considerably in warmer months. For 60 per cent of Alberta households, carbon rebates are intended to cover a typical Albertans’ carbon levy costs. This is based on income. Some Albertans will receive partial coverage. The carbon levy still provides incentive to reduce consumption–if you reduce your consumption, you will save more of your rebates and can come out ahead, with additional money in your pocket. In addition to rebates, the carbon levy is funding energy saving efficiency programs that will help Albertans to reduce their energy consumption, allowing them to save even more on energy costs. The carbon levy is only a small part of your heating cost increase. Enmax said, on Monday, Feb. 13th: “About 80 per cent of the increase in bills can be directly attributed to the extended and extremely cold temperatures we experience this winter.” Especially compared to our very mild November. Higher transmission charges in recent months are likely a result of households’ increased gas consumption. Transmission charges are variable, meaning they are based on your varying consumption. Higher distribution charges are a results of continuous investment and improvements in the distribution systems that bring gas to your homes and businesses. Complaints about distribution and transmission charges can be directed to the Utilities Consumer Advocate: 1-866-744-5129. Rate Rider X (for Direct Energy PRO customers) is being used by Direct Energy to recover the costs of their settlement and litigation fees resulting from settling a class action suit with customers over late fee billing practices. This was not a rider from the government and is not related to government policy. Concerns and complaints can be directed to Direct Energy at: directenergy. com/alberta; the Alberta Utilities Commission at: auc. ab.ca and the Utilities Consumer Advocate at: ucahelp. alberta.ca. Despite what some have suggested, there is ‘no’ carbon levy on electricity bills. The carbon levy is not affecting electricity bills. With regard to your electricity bills we have given the Balancing Pool the tools it needs to manage expenses. This is protecting consumers by limiting a charge that could have been $13/MWh to $1.11/MWh. For a typical residential consumer, that charge could have been $8 per month, but instead will be 67 cents per month. For a 50 megawatt oil and gas facility, for example, the cost would have been around $300,000 a month if our government had not taken action. By giving the Balancing Pool the tools it needs to smooth out the cost, that cost is about $24,000–a difference of over $250,000 every month. We announced a 6.8 cent per kWh price ceiling on the regulated rate option for electricity, that will take effect June 1. The electricity system we inherited is exceptionally volatile. Volatility was built into the design of this system. While we transition to a more stable electricity system through the adoption of a capacity market, we are protecting consumers against the sort of unexpected and unpredictable price spikes that have happened in the past. You may have also heard in the news that two additional medical examiners have been added to the office of the chief medical examiner to strengthen service to Albertans by increasing the speed of death investigations and allow families to receive important information about their loved one. This brings the number of medical examiners to 10. The two additional positions will help complete the 20,000 death investigations, including 4,000 autopsies performed every year in Alberta. STARS Air Ambulance fly an average of five missions a day from three bases in Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie. “This year marks the 24th STARS lottery in Alberta, and with the vital support of each of you, we have been so fortunate to sell out all of our previous 23 lotteries,” said Mark Oddan, communications lead. “Our very experienced doctors, nurses and paramedics used their critical care expertise to help 1,814 patients in more than 250 communities in Alberta last year, helping people where they needed it – on scene, or transporting them from a rural hospital to tertiary care. We carried out 22 missions to Camrose in the 2015-16 fiscal year alone.” It takes $10 million to run a STARS base. Funds from the lottery contribute to one-third of STARS’ operating budget in the province. For two weeks one winter, Matea Smid’s parents feared that their daughter would never reach her first birthday, learn to walk, or play with her sister. Would she get the chance to begin Grade 1? A severe blood infection left the eight month old lethargic, swollen and struggling to breathe. Her veins were collapsing. The rural doctor knew Matea needed urgent critical care in the city and feared time was running out. He called STARS for help. As the helicopter left,
with Matea in the care of STARS’ air medical crew, her parents felt a flood of relief knowing she was in excellent hands. Two weeks later, on Matea’s last night in hospital, her mother Pam wrote a letter to her daughter. In it, she counted her blessings and expressed her gratitude. She told her young baby how tremendously grateful she was to have one more day, week, month, year, or decade together. Every day, parents Pam and Terrace and sister Keziah thank Albertans for helping save Matea’s life. Twenty minutes after taking a selfie on the slopes and sending it to his wife,
and went from turning down the slopes to lying on a stretcher,” he said. “My world quickly changed as I struggled to breathe. My medical crew gave me oxygen and tried to keep my heart beating. The Augustana Vikings hockey team will meet the Red Deer Kings in the first round of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs. The same two teams split a series on Feb. 17 and 18 to set up the grudge match. Augustana needed overtime to win 3-2 in the first game. Travis Mayan and Dylan Coupal scored power play tallies for the Vikings in the contest that was tied 1-1 after the first and both squads scored in the third. Jeff Lorenz garnered the winning marker in overtime. Goalie Curtis Skip stopped 44 of 46 shots for the win. The Vikings dropped a close-checking 2-1 game in the rematch. Former Vikings player Keri Alcorn was named to the women’s north all-conference team. No current Vikings players were selected to the women’s or men’s team. Enforcement agencies will often team up in order to provide a broader scope of enforcement and ultimately ensure public safety. Reports out of the Camrose Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch indicated the following: Feb. 12
Officers focused on Fisheries Act inspections as well as OHV inspections (off-highway vehicles such as snowmobiles, quads and side by sides) relating to insurance and registration requirements. Approximately 85 users were checked and 24 violations were initiated by officers for prosecution. Feb. 11
Officers from Camrose and Stettler fish and Wildlife districts teamed up with the Bashaw RCMP, to respond to fisheries violations on Buffalo Lake. The six officers checked well over 100 anglers on the lake and dealt with fisheries violations, unlawful possession of narcotics, off-highway vehicle violations and

alcohol related violations. Compliance was about 85 per cent with only 15 violation tickets being issued. Officers also focused on off highway vehicle inspection ensuring OHVs were properly insured, registered and displaying a license plate, as required by law when operating on any public land within the Province of Alberta. The compliance rate was quite low with several tickets and warnings being issued. Note the law
Off-highway users are required to produce the proper documentation for any off-highway vehicles including proof of valid registration, insurance and licence plates when operating on public lands. Having these documents
enables officers to establish ownership and aides in the investigation of any stolen OHVs. It also protects public safety and the operators of the vehicles from liability in the event of an accident or theft. Any unregistered and or uninsured OHV is subject to immediate seizure and penalties under the Off-Highway Vehicle Regulations or the Traffic Safety Act. Officers remind OHV operators that the use of alcohol or illegal drugs while operating OHVs in public places may result in charges for impaired driving similar to that of on-highway motor vehicles and the consumption of alcohol in any public place, including temporary ice shelters (shacks) unless that place is deemed a temporary residence whereby all parties stay overnight in the shelter, is unlawful. Operating any motor vehicle including OHVs even on private property while consuming alcohol is extremely dangerous and should always be avoided.
