You humbly think of yourself ‘as only a farmer’. Yet, upon reflection, you are the person who feeds us all: the young, old, weak and strong. People of no other single career or profession have your unique and wide array of skills. Your chosen life requires you to be an accountant, mechanic, businessman, teacher, father and husband. In your ‘spare time’ you may dabble as a veterinarian and a chemist, too! Yet, you prefer the title of ‘farmer’. You may not be wealthy in terms of material things, yet you consider yourself wealthy beyond compare. You treasure your lifestyle and life itself. Despite your lack of ‘riches’, you enrich others’ lives. Your profession offers no guarantees. You are at the mercy of powers much greater than your own, yet you persevere. You are strong. You are courageous. You live and you allow others to live. Yet you seek no glory and rarely hear the word ‘thanks’, from the countless people who depend upon you. At Agriterra Equipment we recognize this. As your proud partners in farming, we say ‘Thanks!’ We say it loudly! And often.

Coffey appreciates the teamwork of local producers By Murray Green

Former National Hockey League defenceman Paul Coffey knows a thing or two about teamwork. He was a member of four Stanley Cup winning teams, but he was impressed with the teamwork farmers display in getting food from the field to the table. BASF Canada invited

keynote speaker Paul Coffey to greet Knowledge Harvest event attendees at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on March 7. “When I was first asked, I thought, what do I know about farming? Farming is the biggest job on earth and I want to give everyone a big hand,” said Paul

as he applauded the crowd. “Respect is a huge word. Everyone in the world has respect for what you do and it is immense. You are not only feeding yourself, but the towns, cities and the world, which is pretty impressive.” Farming and hockey can be totally different worlds. “I have a lot of respect for

farmers and I wanted to talk about the similarities. You have to work in a team environment, fight through a lot of adversity and you have to be able to take the good with the bad,” said Paul. “I’m going to a Hutterite Colony and learning about that. Farmers have a lot of pride in what they do.”

Known for his speed and scoring prowess, Coffey ranks second all-time among NHL defencemen in career goals, assists and points. He has played for nine teams in the NHL, including the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. Continued on page 5

Former Oiler Coffey praises farmers Continued from page 3

“It’s great to be back in Alberta. I came here in 1980. I’m from Toronto and the furthest west I had been was Windsor. Coming out west was great, but I didn’t know a lot about farming. The passion people have is incredible. The pride, commitment and passion is visible. way. We were all fueled by the fear of failure. Our job was to make Edmonton great. The Eskimos were winning Grey Cups and we wanted to be better than them,” shared Paul. “I met Wayne Gretzky when I was 14. He came to try out for our bantam team and he didn’t make it, so he played junior A instead,” laughed Paul. “The reason he didn’t is because he couldn’t get legal guardianship. We played road hockey and were buddies. After, we

went to McDonald’s and he had five Big Macs. I thought that is what you have to do to make the NHL. Everything about having a proper diet, Wayne threw out the window.” Paul said it was easy to be good when your best player is your hardest worker. “We had another great leader in Lee Fogolin. He went to the finals as an 18-year-old with Buffalo and then didn’t come back for 10 years. He gave us

an incredible speech about winning now and not waiting. We lost the first finals to the New York Islanders, but he taught us about winning. However, when Lee was traded, I realized this was a business and not just about hockey.” Coffey is a three-time Norris Memorial Trophy Winner, NHL All-star and Hall-of-Famer in 2004. He ranks second all-time among NHL defencemen in career goals, assists and points, behind another

former Boston Bruin, Ray Bourque. “People ask me all of the time how Wayne scored 200 (214 in a season) points and I say that’s easy, he was trying to score 300. He played every shift.” The first year Paul played for the Oilers, they met the Montreal Canadiens in the playoffs and beat the team in three straight games. “That was a thrill for me, other than winning the cup,” he said.

“We were playing one game in Calgary and, at that time when a fight broke out, everyone grabbed a guy. Mel Bridgman grabbed Mark Messier and I said, ‘I got him.’ Mel hit me with so many lefts, I was begging for a right. He just pounded me. Jari Kurri got dishragged that game too. Sather (coach Glen) didn’t like that, so he hired a boxing coach and we trained in a church basement. The next game, I think we played the Bruins, we lost 4-1 and Kurri didn’t get any goals, Coffey didn’t get any assists, so there went the boxing lessons.” Sather always wanted the next best thing. “We were the first team to do fitness testing. One year,

we did sit-ups and Wayne did 22, push-ups Wayne did seven and chin-ups Wayne did three. Slats (Sather) comes in and for whatever reason he could get information on other teams. “He had the Calgary Flames stats and he reads Jamie Hislop’s numbers – a good role player. Jamie did 100 sit-ups, 55 pushups and 35 chin-ups. Sather wanted better numbers from Wayne. Sather reads those numbers to Wayne and Wayne replies, ‘Why don’t you trade me for him then?’ The conversation was over.” He has excitement for the Edmonton Oilers again. “With Connor McDavid, they have a player. They are going in the right direction and it

is going to be exciting for the fans again.” He did point out that hockey isn’t the same as when he played. “No one hits anymore. Calgary came in to Northlands, the old rink, last year and came in and beat the Oilers 5-0. That shouldn’t happen at home. We would have had a brawl if someone did that to us.” Paul owns a car dealership and car wash and has sons playing hockey. “I coach because I get tired of watching. I don’t overcoach, I see too much of that these days.” He also loved playing for the oldest team in the NHL. “Playing in Boston was phenomenal. The Bruins were always tough. It took us a while

to figure out how to play in the old Boston Gardens because you didn’t have

as much room. Boston is a great city, great franchise and a good sports city.”

Farming Out Loud event By Murray Green

BASF held a Knowledge Harvest event at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on March 7 to pass information on to producers. “The industry is evolving and we are faced with many challenges outside of agriculture, such as climate change, demographics, increasing social and political pressure,” said Jeff Bertholet, BASF technical development manager. “We are so fortunate to be in an industry that is vital to life. As growers, you are producing food and we think there is no more noble profession than that. Today’s population is about seven billion people and by 2040, it is expected to be nine billion,” Bertholet explained. “That is not that far away, but that is another two billion people to feed. The question is: is food production going to keep pace with the growing population?” The company is developing solutions for growers and partnering with them to help them achieve success. Knowledge Harvest is a series of events hosted by BASF where growers, retailers and industry experts can connect and share information, ideas and experiences, and gather the knowledge needed to make the growing season a success. “In Canada, we are lucky. We are fortunate to have one of the lowest prices for food in the world. We spend about 10 per cent of our income on food and we have an abundant food

supply. We think science and technology equates to sustainability. The more food we can produce on the existing land we have, the safer it is on the environment,” said Bertholet. Knowledge Harvest also provides an opportunity to recognize the agriculture industry and the people who make it successful. “It is important to develop new crop solutions going forward. About 34 per cent of our money is spent on R and D (research and development). In Canada, we use our share of that money working together with you (producers) to develop solutions,” he added. “We are producing about $8 billion more in crops to feed that growing population than we would without those kinds of tools.” Since its inception in 2014, Knowledge Harvest events have focused on a theme, which guides the event and ensures guest speakers and topics are timely and relevant. The theme for Knowledge Harvest 2017 is Farming Out Loud, which speaks to an unabashed pride in producing the food that feeds Canadians and people around the world. Farming Out Loud also encourages collaboration, and sharing knowledge on innovative technology that is shaping the future of plant science in Canada. “By partnering with companies such as BASF, we become stewards of the land for future generations. There has never been a better time to get the farm tires you need to be ready for spring.

The Highway 21/13 roundabout received a 2017 Minister’s Award for Transportation Innovation. The award winners represent diverse parts of Alberta and assorted areas of expertise and recognize the innovative people and organizations in Alberta who plan, design, construct, operate or maintain a roadway, transit service or related initiative. “These awards celebrate transportation innovations, large or small, that are paving the way toward more efficient, sustainable and safer transportation systems in our province. I am proud to present these awards to those who use their skills and creativity to constantly elevate Alberta’s industry, said Brian Mason, minister of transportation. The Highway 13 and 21 Roundabout was a team effort with AlTerra Engineering, Ourston Roundabout Engineering, Border Paving and Alberta Transportation sharing in the construction project. Although there were traffic signals at the intersection at Highway 13 and Highway 21, collision rates were two-anda-half times higher than the provincial average. Left-turning vehicles were involved in more than half of the most severe collisions prior to the construction. Alberta Transporta-

to design a temporary detour around the intersection. The detour kept road users moving, while isolating construction workers from traffic. This new roundabout has reduced collision rates at the intersection.

A Salute to Farmers… Thousands of hardworking farm families work diligently every day to bring us the safest, most wholesome and affordable food found anywhere in the world. And while there are fewer people producing that food, they are more productive while being more quality, safety and environmentally conscious. It’s done by real people – families who have deep roots in agriculture and wouldn’t do anything else for a living. Our farmers work diligently to feed the world. They are also stewards of the land. We trust them to take responsible care of our land and water so the land will continue to produce food forever. As you enjoy your next meal, take time to think about the men and women who produced your food and what it took to get it to you. Be grateful for those who grow and raise our abundant and safe food supply.

Thank you to the men and women of our agriculture industry.

Truck inspections keep vehicles safe in County

Save Thousands ON Pre-Built Homes!

Camrose County will join forces with a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement crew to conduct free farm truck inspections March 28 and 29 at the east end Wildrose Co-op Cardlock bulk gas station. County Protection Service officers have begun preparation for the annual Farm Truck Check, which is hosted by Camrose County every spring. “Camrose County has invited an officer from Lacombe County and an officer from Flagstaff County to attend the check and work alongside Camrose County officer,” said protective services manager Mike Kuzio in his report to council on March 14. “This will be the third consecutive year that the Farm Truck Check will be held at the cardlock station. This new venue is the result of the Alberta Transportation Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Branch, advising that the Inspections (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance – CVSA Level 1) which are conducted at this Farm Truck Check, can no longer take place on private property (Camrose County grounds). If a Level 1 CVSA Inspection is now conducted on private property, these inspections are considered Level 5. This means that the officers conducting the inspections can no longer include these inspections in their yearly total, of which they are required to conduct 32 annually, in order to keep their CVSA certifications. This also means farm and commercial vehicles that are being inspected on private property are no longer able to receive their certification decal if they pass the inspections.” Last year, the annual inspection ran into some bad weather, but the trucks rolled in at a steady pace. “Because this is a free farm truck check, no vehicles will be towed and no tickets are issued,” said officer Manie Germushuysen, of County Protective Services. “Camrose County would like to encourage farmers to take advantage of this inspection program in order to avoid any on-highway problems.” Inspections will include critical safety items such as brakes, steering, lights, frames, fuel systems and drive shafts. Camrose County performs truck inspections on an annual basis, usually near the end of March or the beginning April.

Bob and Linda Coutts will be honoured as Forestburg area community builders by the Battle River Community Foundation on April 8.

It would be hard to find a couple who have been more dedicated to their community than Linda and Bob Coutts. The two met while they were both still in high school – in the summer of 1979 when Bob worked as a counsellor and Linda worked as a lifeguard at Bar Harbour Camp. Bob is a third-generation resident of Forestburg, while Linda, who grew up in Oyen, moved to town when the couple married about 32 years ago. Bob graduated from Forestburg School and then studied Marketing Management at NAIT before returning to join his family’s Home Hardware business. Linda studied Education at the U of A and then joined the staff of Forestburg School as a teacher. Linda has also maintained her strong interest in swimming, competing at the Masters Games in Italy, Australia and Edmonton, while Bob has volunteered at the World University Games. The couple have also dedicated time to successfully raising two children – daughter Kate now age 24 and son Duncan now age 19 – who are both pursuing post-secondary paths and making their parents proud. Linda and Bob say the influence and example set by their own parents helped each of them develop a strong belief in giving back to their community, through their parents’ own work with church and community groups. Bob has served on the town council – as mayor, deputy mayor and councillor, as well as on the local ag. society, community centre board, Chamber of Commerce/economic development board, arena building committee and church board. He is currently championing the Flagstaff Intermunicipal Partnership (FIP) efforts to regionalize services in Flagstaff County. Linda has also served on the church board, the board of Bar Harbour Camp, the swimming pool board (including the committee to build a new pool), as well as coaching volleyball and hockey. “You only get out of a community what you put in,” Bob said. “We love our community and we want it to thrive,” Linda added. “We are willing to volunteer because we want things to succeed.” Now the dedicated duo are supporting their community in a new and different way, by allowing themselves to be recognized as Community Builders by the Battle River Community Foundation. That means spending an evening in the spotlight and being acknowledged for all their hard work, in exchange for donations to their new BRCF fund, being established to support the betterment of Forestburg. “We keep hearing about all that the Foundation does in our area,” Bob explained. “We’re just amazed at the dollar value of the fund and what it provides.” “We’re very excited to raise funds that will benefit our community,” said Linda. “That’s very meaningful to us. We’re also grateful to have the opportunity to help more people be aware that the Foundation exists, because not only can they donate to it but they can apply for grants and actually use the Foundation to help our area thrive.” Linda and Bob are looking forward to a fun evening with friends at the Forestburg Community Hall on April 8 to raise funds and celebrate Forestburg. The evening will include tributes from local speakers and a live auction. If you’d like to join in, tickets can be purchased through Forestburg Home Hardware, Forestburg Agencies or through Battle River Community Foundation Board member Judy Larson at 780-385-3568 at the Camrose Battle River Community Foundation office.

Ryley-Daysland basketball strong finish By Murray Green

The combined Ryley-Daysland 2A girls high school team finished league play with a win in Tofield to complete league play with a solid record of 5-1. They also wrapped up tournament play with a gold medal in Redwater with a strong three-game winning effort. The team competed in seven tournaments over the year, starting off with gold in Vermilion. They placed in every tournament, which included Rocky Mountain House, Quad, Daysland, Hanna and Foremost. “The year was an attestment for the girls to evolve from foes to friends working together in a seamless transition to work as a cohesive team,” said Gene Hrabec, a coach on the team. “They look forward to heading off to zones, which are hosted by Pigeon Lake, who has been ranked number one or two throughout the season.” Ryley-Daysland has remained in the top 15 in 2A schools in the province with a 22-7 record throughout the rankings all season with honourable mentions in all three updates. Following the provincial run, three of the seniors on the team were invited to the Alberta Shooting stars, which will be held at Chestermere High School March 24 and 25 to compete for scholarships. The attendees are Sarah Hrabec, Heidi Bratrud and Alarie Guhle. Jill Omoth and Hayley Stokowski will be attending in the prospects event.

The new M7 offers superior hydraulics and sophisticated control to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Kubota’s V6108 engine delivers 168, 148, or 128 HP (3 models).
