Mayor Norm Mayer spoke to the concerns presented by residents of West Grandview regarding traffic calming during the regular Council meeting on March 20. “As we have heard from comments this evening, it has not been traffic calming as much as it is the volume of the traffic, and that process of calming is by restricting the traffic in the area.” City Manager Malcolm Boyd explained the five recommendations brought before council. “The first three are requesting further direction from Council on motion 4/17 where Council directed administration to develop a traffic calming policy. “The second two recommendations are related to motion 5/17 where administration was directed to engage residents with options related to permanent traffic calming.” In response to administration’s request, councillor Wayne Throndson proposed a supplemental motion to motion 5/17. “We need to specifically deal with West Grandview. I think this has been hanging over the residents long enough and I think it is time to put this to bed.” Councillor PJ Stasko, while somewhat in agreement with the motion, expressed concerns that the option of full street closure was not addressed. Councillor Agnes Hoveland supported the two options (bollards or a gate) proposed in the March 6 report presented by City of Camrose Director of Engineering Jeremy Enarson and, subsequently, the supplemental motion made by Throndson, as opposed to closing the street with a cul-desac, citing financial costs. “These (two options) are more affordable. “I am reluctant to not have a shared cost on this project with the residents in the form of local improvement,” said Hoveland. Councillor Max Lindstrand expressed concerns about the City funding the costs. “We did some traffic calming in East Grandview just a few years ago and the residents paid 100 per cent of the costs, so there is that fairness angle of this. If we could keep the costs down, is it reasonable to have some cost-sharing on that?” Enarson commented on the City’s Local Improvement and City share versus residents’ share policy. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson In praise of civility
“A loss of civility goes straight to the bottom line” was an article title that caught my attention this week. ***
I grew up in an era where it was deemed important to be polite and courteous. It isn’t just that we were taught to speak respectfully to grown-ups and to one another. Courtesy was demonstrated and modeled by most of the grown-ups around us. True, our dad considered insult humour appropriate, but that’s a whole other conversation. (Rudeness is not appropriate unless it gets a laugh? Hmm. And I can’t help laughing. Double hmm.) But I digress. “Civil” is the root word of “civilize” and “civilization” and closely related to “citizen”–all words relating to our ability to live together and function as a society. A definition of “uncivil” is “rude, untrained, disregarding the duties of citizenship.” I didn’t know the word “civil” when I was growing up, but it’s fair to say that civility was both expected and valued, not just in our home but in the community. ***
With that background, I found it interesting, in the business section of a newspaper, to read the column by Lola Rasminsky entitled, “A loss of civility goes straight to the bottom line.” The article quoted from Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace by Christine Porath, who surveyed more than 20,000 people over a 10-year period. Porath says the effects of rudeness in the workplace “spread like a virus.” Among the measurable impacts of incivility were: Eighty per cent of workers lost work time worrying over an offending incident. Seventy-eight per cent said their commitment to their organization went down. Sixty-six per cent said their performance went down. Forty-eight percent who had been on the receiving end of rudeness intentionally decreased their work effort. Forty-seven per cent intentionally decreased the time they spent at work. Most telling of all, from a business point of view: Eighty per cent of customers who witness rudeness among employees were not likely to return to the business. So–rudeness in the workplace leads directly to reduced productivity, reduced employee commitment and reduced customers. Pretty expensive.

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Justice system
We as Albertans all have seen how our justice system here in Alberta has all failed us. The system as we all know it is broken. So, far our NDP government has not bothered to consult Albertans for their input on how they could fix our broken system. I do believe we as Albertans are not as dumb as our government would like to believe we are. I am quoting directly from this article which I found on the website, www. wildrose.ca the following statements. The article is called, Wildrose launches Alberta Crime Task Force. On March 22, Wildrose Shadow justice minister, Angela Pitt launched the Alberta crime task force, a
new initiative by the Wildrose caucus to consult directly with Albertans about the state of our justice system. The task force will be chaired by Pitt and co-chaired by MLA Don MacIntyre. The crime force will listen to Albertans directly about the impact of rising crime in Alberta and the effect of NDP policies, and seek feed back on solutions to making communities safer.” I have not seen this coming from our NDP government. Instead of acting like they cared, at times they have sat back and laughed at the suffering which a lot of Albertans had to suffer. There were some members of the government who have called us Albertans names. She did apologize for her actions however, this shows the disrespect which this government has shown towards the people who they pledged to look after. I have not seen a lot of consulting which a good government would do if they really cared about the well being of the people who trust their decisions to make a difference in their lives. In a poll, which I have seen, 61 per cent of Albertans want Brian Jean to be their premier. In the
2019 election, we will have to wait and see if Albertans will place Mr. Brian Jean as their next premier. Time will tell if this will ever happen. This will be up to Albertans to decide the fate of this once wonderful province. Lorne W.P. Vanderwoude, Camrose Movie beef
I also have a beef with Beauty and the Beast. A woman is depicted as having her head in the clouds and being frivolous because she is bookish and smart. A man forcibly confines a woman and somehow by the end of the movie this power imbalance is ignored. Another man ignores the clear “no” of a woman and continues to press his desires on her. Two men battle over the hand of a woman, ignoring what she wants. Finally, a viewer complains about a nonexistent “problem”: a gay character. Love is love. There is so much that is disturbing about the actual events of the movie, but increasingly diverse perspectives in Disney movies isn’t one of them. Tyler Osborne, Camrose
***
The negative impact of rudeness and incivility is also true in families and in communities. Incivility is an assertion of disrespect and of power. It’s a form of bullying. When it becomes acceptable to be rude and disrespectful to others, that opens the door to make other forms of abuse more acceptable. Incivility creates a climate of unsafety. In that unsafe environment, most people’s efforts and energy are going towards self-protection, through variations of fight, flight or freeze. Communication and actions are all about surviving in a dangerous environment–through toadying to power, saying what seems acceptable whether it’s true or not (so no accurate information on which to base decisions), or hiding, passive resistance, blatant or sneaky rebellion, sabotage or anything else to survive and (possibly) get revenge. Efforts and energy are therefore not available for actions to bring people closer to enable cooperation, or any other actions to help the family or the community move ahead and flourish. ***
Our strongest leaders have asked our best of us. Abraham Lincoln asked his countrymen to summon their better angels. Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela preached non-violence and acting from love not hatred. I cannot change current high-profile leaders who demonstrate incivility and inconsideration and lying – and, I suspect, are doing untold damage in subtle and not subtle ways that go far beyond what’s immediately obvious. What I can do is re-affirm my commitment to be civil in my own connections with other human beings. The business article leads me to conclude that rudeness, inconsideration and other forms of incivility are bad for business. Courtesy and respect are good for business, good for families, good for communities. If you can’t do it for love, do it for money! ***

you can’t get past the idea of a gay character in a movie. It’s a “you” problem, not a “they” problem. But thanks for helping out with the acceptance of others who may be different from you or your children, I mean why would we want the world to be accepting of all people for who they are, instead of what you think they should be and spreading hate because of it. Joslyn Mayer Podolski, Camrose
Tamara Morris, Beauty and the Beast, a fantastic movie so I’ve heard, sold out everywhere, including Camrose. The fact that there is a gay character should make no difference in who sees this or not. For somebody to say they are not homophobic and then carries on to say “But maybe they should just stay in the closet because I don’t like it and I don’t want to explain the facts of life to my children”. Instead you are choosing to teach your children to hate and fear what they don’t know or understand. Children are not born hating or discriminating, that is taught by their parents. I would guarantee that every child who has seen this movie never even noticed that there is a gay person in it or care if they did, until an adult pointed it out such as you, who says she is not homophobic, but truly is or else having a gay character wouldn’t bother you in the least. Being gay and or transgender is not a choice, it’s not the “in thing to do” for many families, it’s a fact of life not a choice. To dismiss that is plain ignorance, but I’m sure Disney can surely survive without your contributions. Just very sad that your children and possible grandchildren will lose out in so many great movies because
All I can say is wow. The writer claims she is not homophobic and believes in equal rights, then goes on a monster rant about gay Disney characters being unnecessary, pointless, and not something impressionable children should be exposed to. To finish it off in grand fashion, she basically says she is totally done with Disney because of this issue. Again, wow. I guess my point here is that I wish people would stop hiding behind false pretenses as this lady has done, and come right out with their obvious personal bias toward people and/ or issues. Disney has not done anything wrong here, as gays should be represented fairly and respectfully in this day and age. Why? To reluctantly quote the hugely unpopular Prime Minister, “because it’s 2017.” Bobby Wells, Camrose

Easter treats and daffodils By Lori Larsen
Easter weekend, April 14 (Good Friday) to 17 (Easter Monday) has residents celebrating a variety of occasion including the day of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, the welcoming of spring, the return of the Easter Bunny, or an opportunity to gather with family and friends. University of Alberta Augustana Campus invites residents to join in the annual Easter Scavenger Hunt held at the Campus Forum on April 15 at 10 a.m. Rumor has it that the Easter Bunny will once again be scattering sweet treats throughout the quad. The event will also include cookie decorating, arts and crafts, face painting and a magician. There will be a minimal cost and space is limited, so registration is required closing April 11. Since 1957, the month of April has been signified by the hope that a bright yellow daffodil brings to the fight against cancer. This April, the Canadian Cancer Society kicks off the 60th anniversary of Daffodil Month. This is one of the longest running Canadian annual traditions happening in every province and involves tens of thousands of volunteers in every community in Canada selling daffodil pins and fresh daffodil flowers.

how angry your letter made me. You’re angry because there is a gay character in a movie. You think children should be shielded from this type of thing. Do you not see the world we live in? You said and I quote “I am not a homophobe” and “I understand that being gay and transgender is widely accepted as part of the mainstream culture of today.” Obviously you don’t understand that well. You’re upset because of a gay character in a Disney movie…in case you haven’t noticed Disney has changed with the times, unlike you. While I haven’t seen the movie I have heard about the “gay” character. But let me ask you this. Would you rather children see this gay character in a Disney movie, have the time and opportunity to ask their parents about it, to learn about it. What it means, what it entails, or would rather have one of your kids or nieces or nephews go to school, watch a kid get bullied and beaten for being gay or transgender or bisexual and not fully understand why? Just to watch some one get beat or treated awfully because they are different. What would you do if it was your child, or any member of your family? Would you not want people to understand. To accept. What’s that saying, “Teach them while they’re young.” These kids are going to learn about it one day. Why not give them a hint, a glimpse, while they are still young enough to understand and before peer pressure kicks in. In a movie about love and seeing the best in others despite anything physical, seeing a persons true colours … I would much prefer my children learn that way. In a setting about love and seeing who a person is underneath it all. Yes, I’d much rather that. This is our world and our culture. Not everyone will accept it, and I’m sad for that. But I applaud Disney for their stand. Disney isn’t just about fairy tails and finding your prince at 16 and living happily ever after, cause we all know now that’s not real life. But imposing a bit of real life in a fairy tail, I think that’s where it is at. And I feel sad that you are not open minded enough to see that. I’m also sad that you won’t see all if any of this. Because The Camrose Booster is not what it once was. They print only what they agree with these days. And that is why circulation has gone down. And will continue to go down. But you all have a great day in your little world. Rachel Plantz, Camrose

French parent council looking for new school, site By Lori Larsen On March 29, during a the École des Fondateurs council meeting, discussion on the Infrastructure Committee Report and Capital Plan included a proposal for a new school facility that would meet the school’s growing needs. Attending the meeting were special guests Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord (School Board North Central) superintendent Robert Lessard, Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord Board of Trustees Catholic vice-chair Denis Lefebvre, vice-chair Kevin Bell, City of Camrose councillor Agnes Hoveland and City of Camrose Planning and Development senior development officer Colin MacPhee. Kevin Bell explained to school council, administration, parents and guests the purpose of the infrastructure committee report and capital plan beginning with an explanation of the composition of Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord (School Board North Central). “The school board is a composite board with a Catholic and public component,” said Bell. “It has existed since 1994 and consists of 19 schools in the zone, some Catholic and some public. Our mission is the continued survival of French first language in this area of Western Canada.” Mandated by the government to sequence capital needs internally, the school board formed a subcommittee and prepared the Capital Plan and Infrastructure Report. The Infrastructure Report identified schools within the Scolaire Centre-Nord (Francophone school division), including Camrose, that are in need of an improved (new) school facility.
Denis Lefebvre explained to the attendees the principle behind Section 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (which guarantees minority language educational rights to French-speaking communities outside Quebec.) “When there is a breach of Section 23, it must be rectified.” Referring to a Supreme Court of Canada ruling in British Columbia, Lefebvre stated that Francophone schools are allowed the equivalent schools to the Anglophone counterparts within the same community. “When you look at the French Immersion schools and the English language schools and you ask is our (École des Fondateurs) school equivalent to them, the answer is substantively, no. Then there is a breach of Section 23 and it must be rectified.” Lefebvre went on to say that the current provincial government has been responsive and, in tune with the needs of the Scolaire Centre-Nord school division, he pointed out that Camrose École des Fondateursis one of the schools that is in phase one of the report (breaches of Section 23.) Bell commented that Section 23 covered the legal part of obtaining a new school in Camrose, but that it is vital to lobby government as well as the City and other school boards (Battle River and Elk Island) on the proposal of a new French school in Camrose, including the feasibility of a joint school site. “In the end, you can make this in whatever sequence you want, but when the opportunity (for a new school) arises we can just go.” Lefebvre added, “We are glad we have the City

here as well, because those kinds of partnerships are really important. It is twopronged one: we are lobbying the province for money for the schools, but we also need to talk to the City and the municipal folks because they are the holders of the land.” Parent council member Malorie Aubé asked councillor Hoveland to share what land within the city is available for school sites. Hoveland responded. “The land that has been designated as available is the Valleyview West property and that is up for first-come first-served and whatever configuration that could be. “Right now, that is the only property that we have designated for school.” When asked how many acres the Valleyview West school site designation accounts for, MacPhee said he would confirm the exact size with the City Planning and Development director

Aaron Leckie (upon checking further MacPhee confirmed the school site would be approximately 12.5 acres.) MacPhee also stated he would take all information obtained from the meeting back to City manager Malcolm Boyd. Lefebvre commented, “One of the key issues here is we are unlikely going to be successful in having our own stand-alone school. The likelihood of us succeeding in getting something is to partner up. “We are open to the possibility of some sort of partnerships with the public board or Catholic board, or other infrastructure that the City is interested in putting forward – we have to make those connections.” Concerns were raised as to whether the land allocated for a school site at Valleyview West would be large enough to accommodate the possibility of a shared-school complex or campus. Information was also shared on collaborating with the University of Alberta Augustana French programming and creating a connectivity between Augustana and École des Fondateurs. Hoveland asked about the projected figures (student body) for the proposed school and was told 80 to 200 students. When asked about the projected timeline, Bell responded that it would depend on how quickly the school grew and, that with the right school, the projected student body of 200 would happen very quickly. Aubé said the catchment area for the school was approximately a 50 kilometre radius and a new school would attract more students (families) to the school. Parent Heather Verbaas added, “If we had a facility, they will come. There are opportunities in the other school divisions (Grades 6, 7 and 8 specifically) that will
actually pull students away from this school such as hockey academy, basketball, volleyball, that we just simply can’t do in this facility.” Verbaas said she has two students at the school, but that her son (Grade 6) left the school to attend French Immersion. “If he stayed at this school, he would have been the only student in Grade 6. Because he is a lover of hockey, he moved to Battle River so he could access that opportunity. If we had a facility, I wouldn’t have to take away that language opportunity which my son values.” Parent council chair Shauna Wilton concluded, “What we are interested in is how we can work with the City and other school boards on how this is going to happen.” School principal Nicole Pépin reported on the school’s continuous improvement plan noting the two main goals were to raise the level of reading among students and recruit new Francophone families, that fall within the boundaries, to the school. “In this process of moving forward, it is important to have a school that reflects who we are and what we believe in. We know when we have a building, we can offer more. “We are all working towards the vision that we all see which is offering a quality education to our students in French and working towards a common goal that the school we are putting forward is where people want to come and stay and recruiting the French base of our community.”

When you stroll through the displays, or visit any of the outbuildings at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum, little do you know that one specific person has likely had some level of involvement in what you are admiring. Dave Fitchie grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. He grew up in an era where kids rode bicycles from early morning to when the streetlights came on. He and his friends explored the backwoods, the valleys, the forests and tinkered with things to see what made them tick. They were backyard inventors and Mr. Fix-its. When Dave valiantly graduated from Grade 12, he hit the streets in a different way, looking for a career – actually any kind of employment, as he puts it, without reservation. In 1960 and 1961 in southern Ontario, jobs were few and far between and Dave had almost given up on trying to land a “machinist kind of job”, despite numerous applications and the occasional interview. As Fitchie puts it, “Finally, Stelco in Hamilton called to say they would give me a shot. I’d be the lowest man on the totem pole in the nondestructive ultrasonic testing area of the plant, but at least it was a start.” Eleven years later, an unexpected opportunity presented itself to Dave, his wife (a local farm girl)
and their two preschool children. He recalls the moment, “My boss invited me to move out to Camrose to set up ultrasonic testing in the Stelco mill in that community. I knew Camrose was in Alberta, but that was all I knew. I flew out and toured the city in June on Jaywalkers’ Jamboree weekend. I instantly loved the community and still do.” Prior to arranging the move out west, someone from the Stelco personnel department offered the Fitchies great advice, “Immediately immerse yourself in the community. Get involved. Get out and meet people.” Dave took this to heart. He joined the Kinsmen Club and stayed in the club until age 40 when membership expires. He became a Boy Scout leader–a role that continued for 26 years and, along the way, a life-changing or least life-altering moment happened. Local museum volunteers were looking to restore a gigantic, vintage steam tractor. They approached the general manager of Stelco Camrose, Len McBride. With the plant on shutdown (operating with minimal staff) at the time, Len immediately and graciously allowed the restoration of the massive machine to take place inside the spacious manufacturing facility. Recalls Fitchie, “He also said our company would provide any and all materials required during
the machine’s ground-up rebuild. In addition, I was delegated to assist in any way I could.” Over a long winter, the machine, which had been trucked over to Stelco courtesy of the Francoeur family (owners of Alberta Machinery), was returned to its former glory. On the day it was ready to be driven out of the shop and back to the museum for display purpose, Dave proudly rode on the back. “When we got to the bridge across the Mirror Lake dam, we read the sign ‘Five ton load limit’. Our steamer weighed 34,000 pounds (17 tons). We crossed the bridge and didn’t look back.” To this day, Dave’s favourite museum artifact remains the steam engine. You probably have seen him wearing coveralls and a conductor’s cap operating the machine at Founder’s Day, Canada Day, Machinery Day, Jaywalkers’ Jamboree or the BVJ parade. It’s his baby! What you won’t see are the 10,000 or so volunteer hours Dave has committed to the local museum. Though he has started to back off a bit, for years, he worked up to an eight-hour day, five days a week and occasionally on weekends, too. He has made displays, improved displays, and fixed anything and everything that needed fixing. He has pulled vintage tractors out of the bush and made parts on his own to get them to run. He has built walls for the fire hall building, reinforced walls for the schoolhouse and spent a winter helping photograph 8,000 artifacts and inventory 61,000 additional donated items. Dave has trucked junk to the dump and restored items which probably should have been sent to the landfill. He has fought for the facility in the most difficult of times and toured visitors from far and wide. He has implemented policies and procedures and demanded they be followed. He has brazed, machined, welded, trained volunteers, encouraged many to share their talents to the museum and done whatever it takes to make the place pleasing, despite a meagre budget. Fitchie is a Camrose visionary and he clearly is a Camrose Booster Difference Maker. Who do you know as a Community Difference Maker? Let us know. Call the Camrose Booster at 780-672-3142.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The temporary barricades installed by the City of Camrose on 49 and 50 Avenues have cut down on the amount of traffic using the streets as shortcuts. Residents are now requesting a more permanent solution.
“One of the reasons why the local improvement policy works the way it does, in that having a specifically local resident share, is because it allows the City of Camrose to help prioritize projects within the city,” said Enarson. “We do have unique areas in every area of the city. Without having a policy or process, an objective way of looking at this, the city could open themselves up for further requests down the road.” Councillor Greg Wood reiterated “The $40,000 potential cost to the City is our attempt to solve the problem. “If at some point down the road when its time for paving and curbing in that area and the residents want a cul-de-sac I think that is the time for them to pay 100 per cent (in local improvement). Right now this is a $40,000 fix to the problem.” Mayor Norm Mayer concluded. “I think each and everyone of these situations is unique and I don’t think you can have a hard policy that says you are going to pay this and you are going to pay that without knowing the exact details of the situation. “I think this is one we (the City) created, maybe not intentionally, by encouraging development in the west end, which we’re very pleased to have. We have to acknowledge the concerns this has caused for the people in the area as a separate situation.” A motion was carried that administration consult and seek the input from the residents affected in the West Grandview area as identified in Option 2 of the Report to Council dated March 6, regarding the two options, either of which have the approval of

The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus announces the upcoming choral concert, With Glowing Hearts, on Sunday, April 9, at 3 p.m. at the Augustana Faith and Life Chapel. We invite you to join us for With Glowing Hearts, the Canadiana-inspired spring concert from The Augustana Choir. The concert will take you on a journey across our country as we welcome weary immigrants (“Let Us Cheer the Weary Traveller” by Nathaniel Dett), glimpse life in a Newfoundland outport (“Feller from Fortune” by Hary Somers) and celebrate life in Alberta (“Alberta Bound” by Paul Brandt/Jennifer McMillan). The choir will also present a premiere performance of a fantastic new work by the sometimes-outrageous Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. Together, with six other Canadian university choirs, we commissioned Jakko to write a significant new work for us. We welcome you to our premiere of “Seven Last Words” – an off-the-wall and entertaining musical and etymological delight. As a special treat, The Augustana Choir is thrilled to welcome the choirs of Camrose and Wetaskiwin Composite High Schools (conducted by Tom Spila and Heidi Schwonik respectively). These two choirs will each sing a few of their own songs and join The Augustana Choir for a performance of “Add Your Voice” – a piece we commissioned from the New North Collective, written on the theme of reconciliation – a perfect complement to a concert celebrating Canada at 150. Under the dynamic direction of John Wiebe, the Augustana choirs build on a choral legacy of over 100 years. The choirs are known for their exquisite sound and attention to detail with national and international tours, conference performances and CD recordings to their credit. You won’t want to miss hearing these ensembles. Dr. Wiebe is an awardwinning conductor, pianist, educator, adjudicator and clinician based out of Edmonton. Tickets are available at the door or from choir members.

Are you the owner of
Collector Auto, Auto Memories or Auto Memorabilia?
Dale Scharf of Armena wanted something different to drive when he came upon a 1940 Plymouth that needed a little tender care. “I found the car listed for sale on a bulletin board and it was actually in pretty good shape. I had a 1928 Roadster, but it was getting a little uncomfortable. I wanted something bigger. It didn’t matter to me what kind of car, I just wanted to work on a vehicle. I widened the fenders out one-and-ahalf inches on each side,” explained Dale. He made the 1940 car wider to add more comfort and stability. “I wanted it to feel comfortable to drive. I also added a heater and air conditioning because I drive vehicles to enjoy them,” he added. “I brought it home and tore it all to pieces. I put in a Chevrolet undercarriage, changed the V6 flathead and three speed on the tree to a 350 motor and a 400 turbo transmission. It was called a businessman’s coupe when it was released. It didn’t have a back seat, just a shelf for storage.” Even though the 350 motor is no longer made, it is still the easiest to work on and parts are readily available. It had a butterfly hood, but Dale didn’t care for it,
so he remodelled it. “The hood was flimsy, so I made it stronger and easier for Betty (his wife) to lift.” Ford cars are often picked to restore because parts are easier to find. “I liked the style of the Plymouth and Chevrolet in the ’40s better. The roof line is smoother and slopes to make it look lower. I like the look of it. People asked me, ‘Why are you building a Plymouth?’ It is what I found and it didn’t matter to me. It is not going to be all Plymouth underneath, so what does it matter,” Dale laughed. “That is what is good about building a hot rod, you can do what you want. In the end, it is your car.” Dale likes to go to cruises and attend shows. “I haven’t entered the show and shines around here because I would rather view the other vehicles and talk to people rather than sit in one spot six hours and show my car. I drive in the Camrose Cruise. My favourite spots to go are Kalispell, Montana and Sandpoint, Idaho. They are the most fun and people are there to have a good time,” he shared. “They don’t pick your vehicles apart.” When Dale started on his project, he was still working and it was only
worked on during his days off. It took him four years, but he also had some health issues, which knocked out about a year. He painted his Plymouth a flat grey, but then added black flames to break up the one colour. “It looked a little boring, so adding flames was a nice detail. Guy Hanak was teasing me, asking me when I was going to paint that thing. He showed me some flames and suggested it. Having the front end shiny gives it a nice contrast,” said Dale. He has helped friends with projects such as an 1983 and 1980 Chevrolet, and is currently working on a 1930 Ford Coupe. “I also helped with a Nash. The guy bought three vehicles and we picked the best parts and put them together. It was a lot of welding, but it turned out all right. I know an upholstery guy, so I helped him and he did the upholstery work on my car, so it was a tradeoff and we helped each other. He did an 1946 Ford. He wasn’t as mechanical, so I helped him and it turned out to be a good deal for both of us.” Dale likes to help build a vehicle every year to keep busy and enjoy the older vehicles.
If you have a vintage ride (rebuilt or original), if you’re in the midst of a restoration, or if you’re building a “rat” or a street rod, we’d like to hear from you. Total Car Care. Vimy Ridge Canadian identity
As we commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday, we also approach the anniversary of an event regarded as a milestone that helped define Canada–the battle of Vimy Ridge. Recently in this column, Daniel Sims offered insights into how Canada’s ‘birthday’ could be viewed from a different perspective. The 100th anniversary of Vimy likewise offers a chance to ponder that event and how it has been perceived Jonathan Hawkins, since then. On April 9, 1917, History, the four divisions of the CanaAugustana Campus, dian Expeditionary Force (CEF) University of Alberta totalling about 170,000 men launched an assault on the German-held position at Vimy Ridge in northeastern France. Part of a larger Allied offensive, the battle lasted until April 12, ending with the CEF in control of the Ridge, a position Allied forces never relinquished. In the annals of the First World War, it was not a hugely significant battle. The frontline moved five km eastward, but there was no major breakthrough. Indeed, the CEF’s success surprised the British and French–the Canadian assault was the northernmost element of their broader attack and they were not prepared to follow up on the unexpected CEF achievement. Interestingly, Vimy was one of the few places where the greater offensive actually achieved its objectives. What made this battle so important to Canada was its implications for Canadian national identity. This was notably the first occasion where all four divisions of the CEF fought together in a specific combat role. The CEF’s success immediately became a source of martial pride, especially given that both British and French attempts to retake Vimy in previous years had failed abysmally. A significant portion of the ‘Canadian’ force was not Canadian-born–many were immigrants of British or North-European origins–but Vimy famously generated a distinct sense of being Canadian for the soldiers involved, as opposed to being North America residents identifying more fondly with their previous country. Their pride was soon transmitted back across the Atlantic and travelled home with the CEF veterans...at least, those who made it home–the casualty total over this four-day battle alone was close to 11,000, with almost 3,600 dead. This developing ‘Canadian-ness’, combined with the staggering casualties, were quickly seized upon back in Canada–the sacrifices of the valiant men of the CEF should, so it was felt, prompt the rise of a greater Canada and sense of Canadian purpose. Yet, in the following years, the vision of Vimy drove political development, but failed to realize its social potential. In spite of the diversity of the CEF (soldiers hailed from all nine provinces, from wide ethnic origins beyond the British homelands and featured a proportionally-high enlistment of Indigenous peoples), the promise of a greater Canada proved mostly accessible to middle/upper class Anglo-Saxons–others were less welcome unless willing to assimilate into this particular identity, which many felt understandably reluctant to do. For those within the prevailing culture, such failure to assimilate was seen as a repudiation of those who fought in the ‘war to end all wars’. The tensions rising from this growing divide were, to some extent, overridden by the realization in 1939 that war had not become a mere historical artifact after 1918. The ‘Vimy-as-nation-building’ narrative then found new life and fervour later in the 20th century...and into the 21st. So how can we, 100 years later, identify with Vimy Ridge? D.J. Goodspeed argued that “no matter what constitutional historians may say, it was on Easter Monday, 9 April, 1917, that Canada became a nation.” But the Canadian national identity is a complex thing that has long confounded people. At its root, it is profoundly reflective–its strength lies in its potential for diversity and a stubborn uneasiness at any attempt to define it too narrowly. For many, looking back on the valour, sacrifice and national pride generated by the CEF’s achievements helps inform their sense of Canadian identity, while for others, respect is present, but Vimy itself holds little meaning. Others still may resist basing national identity on military prowess and conflict. This seems contradictory, but the collective affirmation of uncertainty at the core of Canadian identity makes it possible. Vimy helps define us without wholly defining us, which makes this anniversary a noteworthy one for us all.

December 14, 1936 ~ March 29, 2017 A kind and caring friend to so many, Vonnie was born in Carnduff, SK to Alfred and Genevieve Mitchell on 14 December 1936. She passed away during heart surgery on 29 March 2017. Vonnie grew up in Carnduff, part of a large and loving family. Raised by her widowed mother, she quit school early to work as a telephone operator. She married Art Nicholson in 1956, and they moved around southeastern Saskatchewan during the early years of their marriage. With two daughters, they settled in Lampman, where Art worked for the Rural Municipality of Browning, and Vonnie worked at the Co-op. They were members of Faith Lutheran Church and active in the general community. Known for her wonderful baking, Vonnie often made dozens of donuts, buns, pies, and cinnamon rolls for community functions and school fundraisers. She was a creative force in multiple ways: quilting, refinishing antiques and gardening. She was an avid baseball fan and a fearsome fastball coach. Vonnie loved the natural world, especially the birds, but often waged war with the Saskatchewan climate as she worked to grow roses, uncommon vegetables and assorted fruit trees. Her busy and vibrant life continued after she and Art retired. In 2010, they moved to Camrose, where they became part of the Brookside, Bethel and Augustana communities. Everywhere she went, Vonnie became a surrogate mother or loving friend to so many. She did not suffer foolishness, but she was unfailingly kind and caring to everyone, even the fool. She loved life, she loved to laugh, and she made everyone at every gathering feel like family. Vonnie was the feisty matriarch of a large and loving (and noisy) family. She is lovingly remembered by her adoring husband of 60 years, Art; her children Roxanne (Wayne) Harde of Camrose and Michelle (Kris Lepianka) Nicholson of Maple Ridge, BC; her grandchildren Erin (Gord Burt) Harde of Calgary and Alex Lepianka of Sackville, NB; and her great-grandchildren Arwyn and Bristol Burt of Calgary. She also leaves to mourn beloved cousins, nephews and nieces and their families: Diane (Roy) Atcheynum and Dave (Linda) Unraw; Eldon (Marlene) Thompson and Donalee Patton; Brian Mitchell; the Carvers – Les, Alf, Doris, Ian, Dew, and Daryl; the Mitchells – Blaine (Jill), Curt (Paula) and Geoff (Jody); the Mitchells – Christine (Rick), Tracy and Monte (Nicki). Vonnie was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Genevieve; her Aunt Doris and Uncle Ab; her siblings Pete, Don, Viv, Gord, and Durl, and their spouses Doreen, Sharon and Kathy; and her nephew Chad (Jill) Mitchell. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2017 from Bethel Lutheran Church in Camrose, Alberta with Rev. Deborah Ann Taylor officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Bethel Lutheran Church. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Harold Leonard Loades February 14, 1943 ~ March 19, 2017 Harold Loades of Camrose, formerly of Viking, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the age of 74 years. All of his family were with him which is just as he would have wanted. A funeral mass was held on March 22, 2017 at the Holy Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Viking with Rev. Fr. Larry Pederson and Rev. Fr. Luan Vu officiating. Viking Funeral Services Ltd. was in charge of arrangements. Harold was born in Viking, but spent some of his early years living at the Irma gas camp. He moved back to Viking after his dad died when he was just 13 years old. In 1962, while helping out his mom who owned the Burger Queen Drive-In, Harold met his wife Rita. Harold and Rita married in 1964 and they celebrated their 52nd anniversary in October. Shortly after they married, Harold took over the Shell Bulk Plant in Viking. In 1976, he started working for Northwestern Utilities as a pressure operator. He was a dedicated employee for the gas company, which was first called Northwestern Utilities, was bought out by ATCO, then Burlington Resources, and finally Conoco Phillips. It was with Conoco Phillips that he retired after 32 years of service in the gas field. Harold always enjoyed traveling, camping in the mountains with his family and later, trips to Mexico, Hawaii and winters in Arizona. After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, travelling became harder as his mobility decreased. As a result of Parkinson’s, Harold moved into a nursing home in October, 2015. Harold will be forever remembered by his loving wife Rita; his three children and their families: Sandra Loades (Myron Felzien) of Forestburg, Janelle Layton (Blaine Layton) of Eatonia, Saskatchewan and James Loades of Viking; four grandchildren Dustin Daley (Judith Rassmann), Everett Daley, Adrianna Graham and Jordan Graham; one great-grandchild Oskar Daley; and one sister Myrna Crichton (Grant Crichton) of Edmonton. Thank you for the many words of condolences, hugs, flowers, food, prayers and charitable donations. Thank you to Earl Kjelland (Harold’s cousin) and Rosemae Kjelland of Viking Funeral Services for their kindness. A special thank you to the staff at Bethany Meadows for the care you gave Harold. Exploring your past By Lori Larsen
Exploring your past can lead to many interesting, exciting and sometimes shocking discoveries and has rapidly become a growing trend. G enealog y, often referred to as family history, is the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. On April 22 and 23, the Alberta Genealogical Society will be holding the 2017 Alberta Genealogical Society (AGS) Conference in Edmonton at the Radisson Hotel and Convention Centre. The conference features a list of speakers from around the globe presenting a variety of topics related to genealogy. Everyone is welcome to attend the conference, whether a member of a local genealogy society or just someone with a budding interest in learning more about their own family history or the craft of genealogy itself. “This is an amazing opportunity to hear worldclass speakers without racking up large travel expenses,” commented Janine Carroll, president of the Camrose Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society. “There are a few of us from the Camrose Branch excited to attend. With such an opportunity next door, we hope to interest other community members to attend as well.” Camrose has been selected to host the 2018 one-day AGS GenFair, a conference that is held the year opposite the AGS Conference. The GenFair, a smaller version of the AGS conference, attracts about 100 guests throughout Alberta and features a speaker and genealogy displays and will round off with the AGM. “Our ultimate goal is to grow our own branch and also connect with people who aren’t members because they are not in a position to join our group,” added Carroll. The Camrose Branch has between 20 to 30 members and meets the second Thursday of every month (except July and August) at 7 p.m. downstairs at the Camrose Public Library. “What we try to do quite often is pick a topic that every member can contribute to,” said Carroll in describing the meeting agendas. “For example, at Christmastime we had show and tell where everyone was encouraged to bring an artifact from home and then talk about it. Then the conversation just flows from there. It really is a lot of fun.” Continued on page 25
Denise Marie Therese Robinson September 2, 1931 ~ March 25, 2017 Denise Marie Therese Robinson of Camrose passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the age of 85 years. In later years, they moved to St. Paul and, finally, they moved their family to Camrose in 1960. In 1968, Denise gave birth to twin girls, Pauline and Paulette. And, the occasional cold one… Peter passed away in 1981 and, years later, Denise met Heinz Reddmann, who was also widowed. They spent a great deal of time travelling and enjoyed time spent with family. Heinz passed away in 1999. Denise’s health began to fail, and she required open heart surgery and valve replacement in 2007. She then moved to Faith House, and later to Good Shepherd in Wetaskiwin. Jolene Ellen Bieganek Toews Jolene Ellen Bieganek Toews was born on November 6, 1978 to Don and Laurie (Squire) Bieganek in Camrose, Alberta. In mid-January 2017, at the age of 38, Jolene was diagnosed with Metastatic Colon Cancer. Though it came as a shock and progressed very aggressively, her trust and unwavering faith in God shone throughout this time. Although many prayers were prayed for a healing, God’s plan was to call her home in the early morning hours of March 26, 2017 with family by her side. Her courageous spirit through this short journey was an inspiration to many people who never even knew her. Jolene was the third child in a family of ten and grew up on the family farm east of Edberg, Alberta. She attended Edberg Public School till Grade 7 and graduated from Grade 9 at Countryside Christian School near Edberg Alberta. During her early teen years, she gave her heart and life to Jesus and on September 27, 1992, she was baptized, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. Jolene never doubted her conversion experience and had a quiet, solid faith in God, remaining true to her vows till the end. Being one of the oldest in a busy family, Jolene developed a close relationship with her younger siblings as she helped care for them in the home. Jolene helped out on the farm with feeding pigs and being her Dad’s “right-hand man” in the farrow-to-finish hog operation. In November 1999, Jolene left home to spend a very enjoyable year serving at Hogan Hozhoni Emergency Child Care Home in Window Rock, Arizona. She enjoyed being “mommy” to the little Navajo children and made many happy memories with the other girls and houseparents. After coming back home, she headed north to Crooked Creek, seeking employment at the Ridgevalley Seniors’ Home as a cook, and helping out at the local Country Stitches Fabric Store. On October 28, 2001, she was joined in marriage to Mervin Toews. They made their home in Ridgevalley, Alberta and were blessed with two daughters and two sons. Although she was a busy mom, she still had time for her love of sewing, scrapbooking, quilting and gardening. Organization was a high priority for her, and the family relied on the notes on her “mommy calendar” as well as in her notebooks! Being outdoors and having family campouts were always highlights. They took a memorable trip in June 2009 to eastern Canada visiting Anne of Green Gables and many other interesting sites in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Jolene will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Merv; children Megan (12), Jamie (8), Zachary (6) and Sally (3); her parents Don and Laurie Bieganek, Edberg, AB, her siblings June and Darren Isaac, Vincent Bieganek, Meeting Creek, AB, Rhonda Bieganek, Mayerthorpe, AB, Jason and Amanda Bieganek, Edberg, AB, Chelsie and Jonathan Friesen, Kleefeld, MB, Kayla and Gary Wohlgemuth, Crooked Creek, AB, Raelene Bieganek, Edberg, AB, Dakota and Jerry Wohlgemuth, Crooked Creek, AB, Tyrell Bieganek and Joshua Bieganek, Edberg, AB; parents-in-law Willard and Eva Toews, Crooked Creek, AB; Merv’s siblings Lois Toews, Bow Island, AB, Mike Toews, Laurie and Randal Wiebe, Linden, AB, Lorraine and Tim Schafer, Dalhart, TX and Matt and Kendra Toews, Crooked Creek, AB; and also 19 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her four grandparents. The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to all, near and far, who have lifted their names in prayer. A big thank you to Dr. Verberg and the nursing staff of Valleyview Hospital for the excellent care Jolene received. A heartfelt thanks to the community for your support in so many ways. Thank you also to our close friends and family for your support and care for the children during this time, and we trust God that He will lead and give wisdom and direction to us in the future as we endeavor to go on from here.

Exploring your past Continued from page 23 In November the society held a military theme encouraging members to speak about somebody in their family tree with a military story. Understanding genealogy goes back centuries but really became a trend back in the 70s. “It just took off,” said Carroll. “And now it is a multibillion dollar industry.” “You used to have to go to the archives or the churches to get information but now so much can be done on the computer. “However, they do estimate that under 15 per cent of all documents only, are online.” Carroll is in the process of acquiring her professional designation for Genealogy so she will be able to assist people with researching their family history and lineage, specifically in this area and specializing in community records. “It makes me feel good,” smiled Carroll. “I remember a lady from the United States sending an inquiry to the branch. At that time the branch information was coming to me, now it goes to the webmaster person. “This woman was looking for a great, great, great aunt who came to Alberta in 1905 or something like that. The only information this woman (the one making the inquiry) knew was that perhaps the aunt came to Kelsey.” Carroll was able to locate information on the aunt almost immediately by looking through one of the 1975 Alberta local history books (some are online). “I found a picture of her (the aunt) standing in front of the Kelsey Hotel at the time, where she had gotten a job. She was a widow and had a child and the two of them were standing in front of the Kelsey Hotel.” Carroll sent the information to the woman who was inquiring then located and went to the aunt’s grave site, took a photo and sent that to the woman as well. “I was able to give her more information in a half hour than she had found in that 10 years. “It is very gratifying,” remarked Carroll. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Kodály festival By Lori Larsen
Music is indeed a universal language and Camrose will be speaking that language Aug. 8 to 13, as the host of the 23 International Kodály Symposium and Music Festival presented at Augustana and the Bailey Theatre. University of Alberta, Augustana associate professor of music Ardelle Ries and Augustana director of development Bonita Anderson made a presentation to council members on the symposium during a Committee of Whole meeting. “At this particular symposium there are usually around 150 to 200 delegates from around the world that attend,” said Ries. Along with the delegates there will be the addition of family members, friends and other interested parties. The symposium is organized by the International Kodály Society, the Kodály Society of Canada and the Alberta Kodály Association. The University of Alberta will work in collaboration with the Augustana Campus and Camrose for the presentation of the symposium. The symposium is based on the late Zoltan Kodály, a Hungarian ethnic musicologist who collected folk music and studied philosophies around the best approaches to music education. Both Ries and Anderson have deep connections to the Kodály methodology. “Bonnie has a masters in Kodály education and in her previous career she designed one of the best curriculums based on the Kodály philosophy of educating young children,” said Ries. “She has the best early childhood music education programs in the province.” Ries studied this approach to music education in Hungary for four years. She also taught in a music school in Kecskemét, Hungary, Kodály’s birthplace. “Kodály believed that music is for everyone,” said Ries. “He also felt the singing voice should be the foundation for all music education and that music literacy should be for everyone. Not only should we all be able to read words but we should all be able to read music.” Since 1975 there has been a Kodály symposium held every two years all over the world. “This past summer, 2015, it was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, and I had the privilege to be there to see what went on because I knew it was going to be in Camrose in 2017,” said Ries. The theme for the symposium is Singing the Circle, which will be reflected throughout the conference in the way of circular singing games and dances, round table discussions, and through other metaphoric symbolism. “There are so many pos-

Calming neighborhood traffic By Lori Larsen
Residents of the West Grandview area requested council consider permanent solutions to traffic standards for the West Grandview area, at the regular meeting on March 20. Clifford Hoyme, resident of West Grandview presented his concerns. “The traffic committee is not speaking only for ourselves, but have been commissioned by over 80 per cent of witnessed and signed documents involving properties affected by excessive short cutting traffic, to ask that cul-desacs be installed to reduce this short-cutting traffic to within reasonable limits.” Hoyme reported that the national standards for vehicles per day (VPD) on a residential street is 1,000, adopted by the province and the City of Camrose. “As far back as 2002, excessive short-cutting traffic was already near or exceeded the national standard,” said Hoyme. “In 2004, this number has increased to over 1,100 and has been increasing every year since to over 1,600 in 2013, and again to over 1,800 in 2015. “Within a short time after the barricades were
put in place, the VPD dropped from 1,800 to well within the national standard, proving the effectiveness of the traffic barriers.” Hoyme concluded his presentation by asking the City to consider maintaining the traffic count in the area to within the national standards if not with a cul-de-sac, then with the installation of steel posts. Judith O’Shaughnessy, also a resident in the West Grandview area, addressed council on her feelings regarding the traffic calming in the area. “When I purchased my home 25 years ago, 50th Avenue was an average street in a nice area in which to reside. However, expansion began west of 66 Street and, with the construction of the apartments, the commercial area and the Cascade development, our peaceful existence changed. “ T he expansion occurred without traffic planning and quickly our neighbourhood became a shortcut from east to west and visa versa.” O’Shaughnessy remarked on how the environment in the neighbourhood changed including
increased noise levels from the traffic, safety concerns when backing out of driveways, longer house-selling times, an increased number of rental homes, and a concern over home values decreasing. “The number of vehicles per day can only increase if the streets are reopened,” she said, indicating that while speed was an issue at times, the major problem was the volume of vehicular traffic. “The only answer is the continued closure of the streets.” O’Shaughnessy thanked council and the City for installing the barricades two years prior which allowed her neighbourhood to return to a quieter and safer place. “Now it is time to make the decisions regarding the permanent closure,” concluded O’Shaughnessy. “There has been enough studies, surveys, planning meetings, open houses and discussions. We all know the problem and it needs a solution. “I suggest it should be a permanent simple closure of our streets (not concrete barriers) and this should be provided by the City.”
