In recent weeks, the spring melt caused impressive volumes of water to flow under the ice on Mirror Lake. Even though the picturesque lake remained completely covered by ice, water was tumbling over the spillway on the south end of Mirror Lake. Late last week, it was obvious that the amount of water roaring over the Mirror Lake spillway had increased significantly as the water-logged ice on the reservoir had disappeared due to steady rain, gradually warmer daytime temperatures and no overnight freezing. These same conditions being experienced locally are also prevalent to the west and north of the City meaning that water from thawing in the Hay Lakes area and south of Miquelon Lake is, increasingly, heading our way. Water flow relevant to the Mirror Lake spillway and the City creek system is measured by the provincial government just north of Camrose in the creek in the Braim subdivision. On Thursday, when this photo was taken, data collected determined that 3,000 litres of water per second was roaring over the spillway and through Jubilee Park en route to Dried Meat Lake. By Monday morning, data collected showed that 3,880 litres are now moving every second on it’s natural path to the south. The City reminds residents that it can be dangerous, even life threatening, to walk too close to the Mirror Lake spillway or along fast-moving creeks within Camrose. The City also asks residents to exercise caution when walking along the paved trails in Jubilee Park and around Mirror Lake in the coming weeks and to obey all safety signage in the area.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Better than expected

The headline of a tiny sidebar item said, “Optimism comes to those who age.” Since I’m in the process of conceding that I might be aging, it piqued my curiosity. The item reported the results of a research study that asked people how optimistic they were about aging. Among people in their 30s, less than half – 46 per cent – described themselves as mostly or somewhat optimistic about aging. Among people 70 or older, about 66 per cent – described themselves as mostly or somewhat optimistic about aging. That says to me that the reality turns out to be better than expected for many of us. Nice! ***

In Indigenous traditions and many cultures around the world, Elders are respected and revered. I naively once asked an Aboriginal friend, “How do you become an Elder? Do you have to study or anything?” She laughed and said, “Some people become an Elder. Some people just get old.” Some years later – on the occasion of experiencing my first sweat lodge – I met a woman who was learning the traditions under the guidance of an elder and shaman. She referred to herself as a “Baby Elder.” I loved that term.

A letter written by Tamara Morris spoke of her perception of the damaging influence a “gay character” has on children. I would like to respectfully disagree with the comments of the author. Like everyone in the City of Camrose, I was raised on films by Disney. In many instances, these stories have become classics. It was from Bambi we learned about the challenges of coming of age after parental loss, Snow White addresses the ability to escape powers of cruelty and vengeance in a world of predators who try

to poison our dreams and hopes. Fast forward four decades and Disney offered the story of Lilo and Stitch where members of a small “broken” family find love and comfort in one another. This film does not fit the narrow and restrictive definition of what a traditional family should look like. The film Mulan shows a girl’s struggle to protect her elderly father from going to war by pretending to be a man. She is forced to join the army. All of these plots deviate from the standards people would hear as society’s norms. And this takes me to the film Beauty and the Beast where Lafou, a gay character is presented. Once again, Disney is ahead of the times. This decision mirrors a new age, a new world of empathy, tolerance and compassion where intentions matter and we see things from broader perspectives with hopes of building rather than denigrating communities. My partner and I have a beautiful son, I want the same things for him that Mrs. Morris wants for her children. We all want our children safe, respected and

cared for. I do not want my son to grow up in a world of fear, cruelty and judgement that will take away his chance for acceptance of friendship. According to her narrow definition, only stories that are shallow and falsely sanitized make the standard of entertainment. I end this response as I leave the house with my son to catch the early showing of Beauty and the Beast tonight. Janelle Wallace, Camrose Movie opinion

Thanks Tamara. Your letter about children’s movie is a great encouragement to the many who agree with you! Thank you for being thoughtful and articulate about this movement that is creeping (at a rapid pace) into our young children’s lives and minds. Let them be children first. This new movement of the new “norm” is getting far too much attention. George Shostak, Camrose

That leads me to my gift of the week. A friend sent me this poem. It’s how I want to be when I grow up next. If you’re under 30, this might not resonate. If you’re over 60, it might! Becoming an elder By Cathy Carmody Written on a “Choosing Conscious Elderhood” retreat in British Columbia, August, 2012. Leaving behind my journey of struggling and racing through the white water of many rivers, I become the river, creating my own unique way. Leaving behind my self-imposed role as a tree upon, which others have leaned, I now become the wind, with the freedom to blow whenever and wherever I choose. Leaving behind the boxes I’ve created in my life, crammed with roles, responsibilities, rules and fears, I become the wild and unpredictable space within which flowers sprout and grow. Leaving behind the years of yearning for others to see me as somebody, I soften into becoming my future, with permission from self to continually unfold as I choose, without concern for how others may see me. Leaving behind years of telling and teaching, I become instead a mirror into which others can peer and view reflections of themselves to consider. Leaving behind the urge to provide answers for others, I become – in the silence of this forest retreat – the question. Leaving behind the rigor of my intellect, I become a single candle in the darkness, offering myself as a beacon for others to create their own path. I become an elder. Cathy Carmody died in 2016; her website, www.cathycarmody.com, continues to be a source of inspiration. She gave permission for others to share her poem as long as she is credited as author. ***

Parkview RV has been presented the following awards for 2016 1. #1 Timber Ridge dealer in Canada 2. #1 Black Stone dealer in Canada 3. #1 Glacier Peak dealer in Canada 4. #1 Overall Outdoors RV Mfg. dealer in Alberta 5. #1 Overall Outdoors RV Mfg. dealer in Canada Parkview Manager Jason Thompson had this to say about the awards: “It is quite an accomplishment to be awarded top volume dealer in Canada, for not just one brand, but for the #1 overall dealer in Canada for all Outdoors RV brands. It is the biggest accomplishment we can achieve. Outdoors RV Manufacturing has five unique trailer styles, with even their entry level, Black Rock, being considered a better built trailer than most other manufacturers’ top end brands. It shows that our customers are after high-end quality and they know where to find it, along with the high end level of customer service that should accompany this product. Repeat and referral business is everything for us so it is very important that our customers are extremely satisfied with the product they have purchased as well as with the level of service they receive during and after the sale. The Outdoors product has been such a perfect fit for us and our customers. The company is based out of La Grande, Oregon, and they make an RV for our climate. In fact they only supply dealers in the Northwestern US and Western Canada. Most other manufacturers don’t have the majority of their market share in regions with our type of climate, and they simply don’t have the type of product that should be built for up here. Outdoors RV products have more insulation (double in most cases), thicker walls, thermal pane windows, stronger custom chassis, heavier axles, with shock absorber suspensions, larger water capacities, etc., things that the true outdoors enthusiast will appreciate in an RV to get them further out into the wilderness and stay longer any time of the year, all this while being spoiled with the comforts of a high-end luxury home. They are a truly unique product and have features and construction that is not common in the RV market today.”

Kids Campus part of government pilot project By Murray Green

The Alberta government likes Camrose children and parents. Kids Campus Daycare Society was one of the Early Learning and Child Care Centre 22 locations across the province selected for a cap of $25 per day, daycare pilot project. “This is a $500,000 grant for which we applied and only one site was expected to be chosen within our central region (including Red Deer). The purpose is to create more, and more affordable, child care spaces along with supportive options for the community,” explained Suzanne Dumont, program director of the Kids Campus Daycare Society. “We worked with the City of Camrose Social Development Committee in an application for the grant.” Camrose will benefit with job creation with staff additions. “Utilizing current community needs assessment surveys, our centre recognized the need for flex care and available child care outside normal business hours,” said Suzanne. “This will add about four employees and maybe a part time one.” Starting May 1, Kids Campus will have a limited number of child care spaces open until 11:30 p.m. The existing program will have $25 per day maximum fees. However, flexible child care, new community partnerships, support for inclusion and diversity for Indigenous, immigrant and refugee children, access to parenting resources and supports for families, and support for vulnerable families will be enhanced. The Kids Campus will have room for a maximum

of 98 children at 5604-47 Avenue. Quality, affordable, flexible is the thought behind the new model of an early learning and child care centre. The foundation for a strong and healthy community starts with a strong and healthy childhood that supports children for future success as independent, stable and productive adults. “To be selected as an Early Learning and Child Care Centre, we were tasked with making improvements that go above and beyond other child care programs. Our program uses an evidenced-based child care cur-

riculum framework. This program was developed by early learning and child care educators, early childhood academics, government, and professionals working in related fields. It is designed to foster improved early childhood development outcomes so your child can get the best possible start to life,” added Suzanne. Kids Campus also offers inclusive supports for children with diverse needs, flexible child care hours and open from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. for parents who work shift work or attend school. “As a parent with a child already enrolled in our child

care program, nothing will change except that you will benefit from all the great changes including paying no more than $25 a day per child. There is no change to the child care subsidy program. Eligible parents will receive either full, or partial subsidy dependent on their circumstances,” added Suzanne. “If parents have any questions or concerns, they can contact us at 780-672-0152.” This Alberta-wide pilot program provides child care for children aged zero to six years. This program is a threeyear pilot. At the end of the

pilot, there will be a rigorous evaluation process with results reported each year. The results from the evaluation will allow government to determine continued funding and/or possible expansion of the program. Kids Campus will implement an early learning child care educational program. This program was developed by early learning and child care educators, early childhood academics, government, and professionals working in related fields. It’s designed to foster improved early childhood development outcomes so children can get the best possible start to life.

Local players advance to Telus Cup By Murray Green

Submitted Former Camrose Minor Hockey players and current Leduc Oil Kings midget teammates Conrad Phillips and Cole Lewis recently celebrated a provincial win and move on to the Telus Cup.

Two former Camrose Minor Hockey players have found success and earned a trip to the Telus Cup. Defenceman Cole Lewis and forward Conrad Phillips of Camrose moved to the Alberta Midget Hockey League to play a higher brand of hockey. Both were cut by Sherwood Park and went to Leduc to play for the Oil Kings. Lewis, a Grade 12 student, went to Sherwood Park last year, but was released to go to Leduc. Phillips, a Grade 11 student, followed a similar path this season. “It was different to play outside of Camrose for a change. It involved a lot more travel the first year, but this year I lived with my aunt,” said Lewis. “We were fourth last year and not that bad. We lost in the second round of playoffs to

the best team that went to the Telus Cup.” In 2017, Sherwood Park Kings were the top team during the regular season with a 28-8-3 record. However, the third place Leduc squad stole the show in the playoffs to garner the provincial title and earn a trip to the Telus Cup. “In the playoffs, we were rolling. It felt good to beat Sherwood Park. We didn’t think we were underdogs. During the season, we played well, but would lose by a goal because the puck didn’t bounce our way. This year, we had a lot overtime games that we found a way to win.” In the playoffs, Leduc swept the Edmonton Maple Leafs in the opening round, defeated St. Albert in the second round in five games, gained revenge on Sherwood Park in the next round by sweeping them

and knocked off the 24-4-6 Calgary Buffaloes in the final in four games. “The best teams in Canada will be there, but I think we will do fine,” said Lewis. “It’s our point in hockey to play the best we can.” Leduc played a total of 10 overtime periods in the playoffs to advance to the tournament in Prince George, April 24 to 30. “We had a pretty good team this year, we just didn’t play well at the first of the year,” said Phillips. “In the playoffs, I thought going to the north final was good, but each game we kept getting better, so it wasn’t much of a surprise after that.” “Going to the Telus Cup is a really cool experience that you might only get one change at it,” added Phillips. Battle River School Division wants children to have fun in between learning. The board of trustees approved grants in support of two school playground projects at its March 23 meeting. The grants, for $7,500 each, will be provided to Bawlf and Chester Ronning Schools. That amount is only a portion of the funds needed for new equipment. The board acknowledged that it is a small portion of what’s required and recognized the importance of community support and generosity to the development of playgrounds. Students from C.W. Sears School in Tofield spoke to the board about the Mind Up program. The program helps children understand the functions of different portions of their brain and strategies people can use to control or modify their own behaviour. The students demonstrated strategies and encouraged board members and staff to “use your pre-frontal cortex to make good decisions.” BRSD is disposing of the land and building that was Rosalind School. The area has already been sub-divided to transfer the ball fields and recreation buildings on the site to the village. As soon as two appraisals have been received, the site will be advertised for sale. BRSD indicated that the number one priority on its capital plan list, the modernization of Chester Ronning School, has been approved. However, no funding has been allocated to the project at this time. The school is 50 years old this year. BRSD revealed that funds will flow from the provincial government to offset the elimination of instructional material fees that school jurisdictions charged, so there will be no negative impact on the budget.

City reveals Transportation Master Plan update at open house By Lori Larsen

The City of Camrose along with WSP Canada/ MMM Group (WSP/MMM) held an open house on March 30 at Council chambers to inform residents on the process and the findings of the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) update. Staff from WSP, led by project manager Janis Fong along with City of Camrose director of Engineering Services Jeremy Enarson, were on hand to answer any questions about the draft Transportation Master Plan. The TMP is a report that includes an extensive review of the City’s transportation system. The TMP is used by the City to plan for future decisions and allocate resources for current issues regarding the transportation modes and infrastructure. “Our last TMP was approved by Council in 2007,” said Enarson. “In 10 years, the City has grown and the boundaries expanded in 2010 with an annexation of land from the County to the City.” Enarson explained that WSP used traffic count data from the City and put it into a computer model to simulate the City of Camrose and the traffic. “This mimics the transportation network within Camrose. “Once they have that into a computer model, they run a number of different scenarios looking at five, 10 and 20 year time horizons with various assumptions about the growth of the City as well as the regional and provincial traffic that flows in and out of the City.” Whereas the 2007 TMP model assumed fairly aggressive growth projections, the current TMP was developed using fairly moderate growth projections for the City and the region. “Based off the model, they (WSP) looked at some of the things that we (Camrose) needs to do to plan our transportation network to try to accommodate that growth.” Major projects

Enarson reported on the five major capital projects that were all previously identified in the 2007 TMP and subsequently confirmed in the 2017 TMP as areas of improvement as the city grows. “Camrose Drive eventually needs to be extended to the west to connect up with the next Range Road further to the west to facilitate future growth. Camrose Drive would continue past 68 Street to the west on an alignment where there is currently no road at all. This would allow for new quarter sections of land to be developed and then traffic from those quarter sections to be

MAJOR PROJECTS

brought into the existing network. “In the north end of the City, a new arterial roadway would be developed on the north side of Victoria Park connecting 68 Street to 53 Street, and would eventually be connected to 39 Street past the airport. This would be a new east/west arterial connection on the north side of the City. “Similar to the reasons for the Camrose Drive extending west on the south end of the City, the new northern arterial connection would allow new quarter sections of land within the City to be developed without overloading existing roadways which were not designed to handle that volume of traffic, such as 54 Avenue,” added Enarson. “Another area of improvement identified was the major entrances in and out of the City, specifically Highway 13 running east and west and Highway 26 in the east end. Of all those highway connections, Highway 13 at the west end of the City is currently the busiest, and is anticipated to see the greatest increase in regional traffic in the next 20 years.” Enarson explained that with future growth of the City, commercial development adjacent to 48th Avenue and regional traffic coming in and out of the City, the capacity of 48th Avenue is going to exceed standards calling for upgrades at some point The fourth major project Enarson spoke about was the recommendation of a new arterial connection across Mirror Lake connecting 53 Street on the south side and north side of Mirror Lake (the 53 Street Bridge). “This arterial connection would facilitate movement of traffic north/south through the City, including the key destinations such as the hospital and downtown, and would take significant pressure off of other collector roadways that were not designed to handle the anticipated future traffic demands, such as Grand Drive or 51 Street.”

The final major recommendation identified by the TMP report was a further review of 53 Street. “This is not just related to the 53 Street bridge. As the City continues to grow, traffic on 53 Street will exceed the capacity of the roadway on both the south and north sides of Mirror Lake. With parking currently being allowed on key sections of 53 Street, this road is projected to become a fairly major bottleneck within the City,” said Enarson. “At some point, the City should be considering whether to ban parking along those sections. Whether that be a 24-hour or peak-hour ban. Complete streets

Another key component of the TMP is recognizing that vehicles are not the only mode of travel and that the City needs to encourage the use of public transit, walking, biking and commuter biking as alternatives to travelling throughout the City. “The more non-vehicular uses you can have in a community, the less pressure there is on the actual roadways and that allows the potential deferral of some major capital projects,” commented Enarson. “Every time you defer a project, you are saving money for the City. “Part of the current TMP is the concept of Complete Streets. The current trend in the municipal world is to recognize that basically, property line to property line is for the purpose of moving people and goods, and that might involve transit, recreation-

al and commuter cycling and pedestrians. “We (the City) are looking at how we can we change our design standards for the roadways to better accommodate those non-vehicular uses including shared bike lanes or dedicated bike lanes. The City of Camrose has to at least be planning for those changes.” Recognizing that in Alberta people will still need to use vehicles for travel within the City, Enarson explained that the City can design the roadway and road right-of-way to encourage non-vehicular uses and the TMP does identify roadways and corridors that would not be appropriate for non-vehicular use, such as 48 Avenue. The concept behind a Complete Streets includes three main considerations, economics, social and environment. “While budget is important, so are the social and environmental aspects,” added Enarson. Future transition

“The current TMP, even more than the prior plans, is trying to position the City for transition into the future,” said Enarson. “This document helps to guide the City in our capital planning and will be incorporated into our design standards. It didn’t identify any new projects that weren’t already identified in the last TMP. “It helps to rearrange some of the scheduling of the projects, based on more up-to-date modeling which will affect us in the next couple of years which may

mean shifting projects that are in the Capital Plan either forward or backward. “When the opportunity arises, we will definitely consider some of the recommendations of the MTP. It will help us to look at how we have been allocating space within the rightof-way for non-vehicular uses.” Next step

Enarson indicated the open house had 40 to 45 people sign in, some representing organizations, but, for the most part, a good cross-section of residents from within Camrose. “The dialogue with people was very productive and even some of the controversial projects (53 Street bridge and the north arterial connection) had good discource.” At this point, WSP will be summarizing the feedback received and will be including it in the final version of the TMP report. Then, within the next month or two, the draft TMP will be presented to City Council for analysis, recommendations and feedback. “We (City administration) will sit down with Council, review the plan in detail and hear any concerns they have,” concluded Enarson. “The ultimate goal is to bring the TMP to Council for adoption after which it would become the new Transportation Master Plan for the City of Camrose – another planning tool we can use as we look towards capital planning and changes to our design planning standards.”

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Residents from all areas of the city came out to hear about and discuss the Master Transportation Plan update during an open house held on March 30.

Local players help Leduc win hockey provincials Continued from page 8

This marks the first time in team history that the Leduc Oil Kings have won the League title and have advanced to the Telus Cup.

“Hopefully, it gives us a better chance to make a junior hockey team next year,” said Lewis, who is considering attending several camps, including the Kodiaks.

“Same here,” said Phillips. “But, I have another year left to fall back on if that doesn’t work out.” Leduc joins the Regina Pat Canadians, Winnipeg Wild and Cariboo Cougars,

who have already secured berths in Canada’s National Midget Championship. An Ontario-Quebec team and an Atlantic club will make it a six-team tournament.

Both players said various coaches in Camrose helped them to get where they are today. Brandon Heck assisted them making the jump from bantam to midget.

Letters to the Editor Out of the zone

I am not just inching my toes out of my comfort zone this spring, I am taking a big leap. Another soccer season is upon us and this year I have signed up to be an assistant coach for my seven-year-old’s team. I am passionate about soccer (it’s clearly the best sport ever) and played it for many years in my youth. But, I have never coached a sports

team before. To prepare myself, I attended a day long coaching seminar. The facilitator asked us why people would choose not to coach. The answer was that it is out of their comfort zone. He suggested asking the other parents at the first practice who wants to have a fun season, with their children gaining lots of new skills. While the parents have their hands up, ask who can help with on-field activities during practice, organize a snack schedule, or whatever else you need help with that is in their comfort zone. The discussion begged the question: who says we shouldn’t do something that is out of our comfort zone? Some of the times in my life where I have felt the most uncomfortable have led to the most personal growth. My first year of my journalism degree, I had a course where one of the assignments was to interview someone we didn’t know and write a story. Just one story, over the course of four months. I jotted down my questions on a piece of paper, got my notebook and pen ready, picked up the phone… and put it down again. The next day…I repeated the drill. It made my stomach churn to call up someone unannounced and ask them questions. The background to this is that I was shy growing up. The kind of shy where when my Grade 6 teacher called me “Laurie” for the first six weeks of school, it was one of my classmates who finally piped up, “Her name is Laurel, not Laurie!” My voice all but disappeared in front of large groups and I hated speaking in front of class. But my Grade 5 teacher had inspired me to write, and how was I to get information to write about? Interviews. That first college class put me out of my comfort zone, but I rose to the challenge, conducted the interview and wrote the story. I could have dropped out of school, or changed my area of study, but instead I persevered, and it helped me to overcome my shyness. Now I think nothing of calling someone I don’t know, even if it’s for some of the messy, awkward life situations that come up. A friend of mine once even complimented me on how I leave such detailed, concise phone messages. (Wow, what a tremendous skill!) A few years back, I was approached at church to be one of the leaders for a program for children ages three to six that runs during the sermon. It involved planning a Bible story, songs, a craft and games. But it also involved speaking to a group. I hesitantly agreed to be a helper. After a few months, I tried out being a leader, and guess what? I liked it. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, but that was exactly what I liked about it! It challenged me to find a topic that held their interest, and to infuse them with enthusiasm. When the coordinator stepped down, she suggested me for the role and I have enjoyed it since. I am sure that I will feel out of my element as a soccer coach at first. Wanting to succeed can be nerve-wracking. But all that those kids want is someone who will do their best for them, and run alongside them as they learn. They are not expecting my teaching to be perfect, so why should I? Maybe by hurtling myself out of my comfort zone, I will find out more about myself and be a better me.

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Taken aback

I was taken aback to read a dear parents concern about a gay character’s role in the newest Disney movie. First, for the writer to say she believes in equal rights is erroneous. If the writer did believe in equal rights then she would believe that all classic Disney roles of heterosexual Prince meets Princess roles would be equally represented by LGBT Prince/Princess meets Prince/Princess roles. That’s not even happening in this movie for the gay character-he is simply existing (not kissing, marrying, or doing anything intimate that we’ve seen many, many heterosexual couples do in Disney movies). So philosophically no the writer is anti-equal for she doesn’t even want the gay character to exist.

Now, if we take her letter and remove the word ‘movie’ and replace with ‘school’, ‘church’, ‘workplace’, or ‘restaurant’ then we’re beginning to create the landscape for saying the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender person does not belong period. That is the philosophical slippery slope that this kind of thinking begins to create. Kids who are LGBT are born that way and need positive representation in media, religion, and school as much as women, as much as persons who are part of the Afro-Caribbean and black community, as much as persons with disabilities everyone needs positive role models. The writer goes on to say that children need time to form their own values about this issue with a covert implication that they may make some decision about a personal lifestyle choice for themselves - that sexual orientation is somehow a choice. It’s not. We know this is not an issue of values or opinion but of psychology and biology and that by forcing it as an issues of morality and value it creates great psychological problems (often cited as the reason for 40 per cent of homeless youth being LGBT and LGBT youth having a high suicide rate). I am offended that the writer says so glibly that all

of this comes two women kiss on television 10 years ago when she forgets that Matthew Sheppherd, a young farm boy, is tied to a fence and beaten to death for being gay. Does she remember this? Does she know about the stonewall riots? The martyrdom of Harvey Milk? Does she know that we were locked in the camps at Auschwitz too? The difference for us (LGBT persons) was when the soldiers came to save everyone they left us for dead? So listen, I think we can let a little candle flame on. Both the original writer and I jumped the gun, however, because after watching the movie last night, there isn’t even a gay character in it (kiss, dance, prance, march, flag wave or otherwise). It seems we both rode on the coattails of Hollywood scuttlebutt. Chrissy McBain, Edmonton Children’s movie

After hearing that there is a “gay” scene in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, our family too will not be watching any more of these newer Disney movies, when they include this agenda. It’s an individual decision based on what we believe to be right, based on God’s word. Melinda and Bob Michie, Kingman

Members and Public Welcome

Local coordinator for the Bailey, Leslie Lindballe, has used this as a guide to include Camrose organizations in this year’s event. “With the festival happening over the Easter break, I wasn’t able to include schools the same way I did last year, so I approached the community organizations and they really responded,” said Lindballe. The Camrose Pride Community, Aboriginal Students’ office at Augustana and Hospice Society of Camrose and District will all participate in the event. Each film will have a short introduction meant to orient the audience to the topic. Following the film, there will be a short period of discussion. “The best part of the event is that it’s completely free,” Lindballe said. “This means that everyone is able to celebrate our expanding film industry, while connecting with essential work being done by our community organizations. The first movie begins at 2 p.m. called Polytechnique. The 4 p.m. film is Breakfast With Scot, at 6 p.m. the show is Reel Injun and the day wraps up with Death By Joy at 8 p.m.

Rotary exchange student brings Denmark to Canada By Lori Larsen Denmark, home of the Little Mermaid, author Hans Christian Anderson and Lego Land Amusement Park is also home to this year’s Rotary Club of Camrose’s Youth Exchange student Mikkel Moller. The 17-year-old Grade 11 student hails from Svendborg, Funen, an island located in Southern Denmark with a population of approximately 40,000 in the city and 70,000 in the surrounding area. Leaving his father, mother and two half sisters, Mikkel excitedly came to Camrose to experience another country. “Both of my sisters went on an exchange 10 years ago,” said Mikkel explaining his interest in the program. “My dad is a councilor in Rotary too so I knew about it even before I applied. I knew four years ago I wanted to go on an exchange.” Mikkel was told his Rotary District in Canada would be northern Alberta, specifically Camrose and upon his arrival in August of 2016 he began to understand the true vastness of Canada. “It is huge country,” said Mikkel. “You have all kinds of nature here like mountains, the sea the prairies.” As his time here progressed he came to another conclusion about Canada, specifically Alberta. “You have really cold winters. At first when it started reaching only 0 degrees I was cold and I would be wearing my big winter gloves and my toque. But today when I came outside (March 16) to walk to school I just had my light coat. Now 0 degrees seems warm for me.” School first

While in Camrose Mikkel is attending Camrose Composite High School and has joined the junior volleyball and basketball teams. He speaks Danish, English and German but is also fluent in the universal language of friendship. “I really like that we (students) change classes and walk between different classes.

“We start at one class and go to the other one. In Denmark we are just in the same class all day with the same people.” Mikkel explained that moving between classes gets the students up and about and allows them to meet new people. When Mikkel returns to Denmark his plans for continuing school include three years of pre-university. “This would be what

Travelling Canada

One of the bonuses of the Rotary exchange program is the opportunity to travel the host country, and so far Mikkel has been fortunate to do just that. “I like travelling,” he remarked. “I have been to Yellowknife, Penticton, Shuswap and basically all over Alberta. “We went to Yellowknife two weeks ago and

families but the Rotary district has also arranged tours for the exchange students including a Jasper Ski trip and the Yellowknife trip. During these trips Rotary exchange students from all over the world are given an opportunity to meet. Thus far Mikkel’s favourite place visited was Penticton, Shuswap because of the combination of mountains, nice weather and water everywhere. Missing home

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Rotary Youth Exchange student Mikkel Moller from Denmark is proud to show off the Canadian flag and the pins he has thus far acquired during his youth exchange with the Camrose Rotary Club.

I potentially want to study in university so I have started to narrow it down to social, civic and political studies in the same class. I will also have English and Spanish as well and Danish history, it is mandatory. That is for three years and for two of those years I am studying math and science. “You can not really get a job without it so it is best to take the three years of schooling.”

it was really cold but it was amazing. We went dog sledding, saw the northern lights every night and did some ice fishing. We experienced a real taste of the Canadian north.” In July he will visit Toronto and Niagara Falls on his way back to Denmark and there is a potential trip in the spring or summer to Vancouver. Travelling has been done mostly with the host

Denmark is a Scandinavian country located in Europe with a population of 5,707,251 (2016) in an area of 43,560 square kilometres, compared to Canada with a population of 35,160,000 over an area of 9,984,670 square kilometres. Despite enjoying all that Canada has to offer and meeting new friends, Mikkel does miss being able to go to the sea as easily as he can in Denmark. “We (Denmark) are not as big a country so it is easy to get around with all our public transportation that can take us anywhere in the country you want to go. “If you go an hour to Sweden then there are mountains there to go skiing and couple hours south to the Alps to ski.” A couple things Mikkel noted he will miss about Canada, aside from the friends he has made, was the poutine and fast food restaurants. “I love my fries with gravy (poutine) and Tim Hortons in fact all the fast food restaurants,” he said with a grin. “We don’t really have that where I live.” Mikkel also commented on how much he enjoys Alberta beef. Before he leaves Camrose in July, Mikkel hopes to enjoy a few more experiences, such as Fort Edmonton Park, Ukrainian Village and a chance to see some of Canada’s wilder inhabitants such as moose and bears. After completing a year of schooling back in Denmark Mikkel and his family plan to come back and visit Camrose so his parents can meet his Camrose friends.

The exchange

The Rotary Youth Exchange program offers young people around the world an opportunity to study abroad from a few weeks to a full year hosted by local Rotary Clubs. During his exchange Mikkel will stay three months with four different Camrose Rotarian host families, Patricia and Jerome Stetar, Dawn Anderson, Sheila and Darren Herle and Lou and Morris Henderson. Mikkel advises students. “If you have the opportunity to go on an exchange you should definitely take it. It is an experience of a lifetime, an experience you can not get anywhere else. “It has been a fantastic year. I have met a lot of friends here but not only here in Camrose. We are 20 exchange students all over northern Alberta so I get to know people from all over the world. “I even have a Danish friend who is an exchange student in Stettler. We met at Rotary in Denmark and he was going to Canada as well then we found out we were only an hour from each other.” It really is a small world and the Rotary Club is helping to make it even smaller by affording students a rare and wonderful opportunity to experience places a world apart. Wildrose Co-op members elect new directors at AGM Submitted

Wild Rose Co-op held it’s ninth annual general meeting on March 21 at the Camrose Recreation Centre. It was chaired by director Terry Brodie. President Teresa Beddoes reported on the board activities for 2016 including attending monthly meetings, June district meeting, fall conference, and representing the Co-op at Federated Co-operatives. The audited financial report was reviewed by Hal Reid, control-

ler. Copies can be picked up at the Camrose administration office or emailed upon request. General manager Carol Rollheiser updated the membership on the Co-op activities and achievements of 2016. The local economy downturn, along with the wet fall, impacted Wild Rose Co-op financial results resulting in the net savings being less than in 2015. She highlighted awards received by the Co-op: Camrose Chamber Community Spirit Award and Business Excellence

Award, and the Camrose food store receiving the Meat Team of the Year Award and the Centre of the Store Award, both for 2015. Social responsibility is a pillar of the Co-op and in 2016, over $200,000 was given back to communities in the form of donations and goods in kind. This $200,000 includes the Community Kitchen Food Truck, now in possession of the Flagstaff FCS to serve first responders and to also be used for fundraising for local non-profit organizations.

Four director positions were filled by acclamation by the nomination committee lead by director Louis Hagel. The 2017 Wild Rose Co-op board of directors is: Teresa Beddoes of Daysland, Doug Hampshire of Sedgewick, Louis Hagel of Camrose, Chris Blades of Camrose, Meghan Kearns of Camrose, Terry Brodie of Killam, Brenda Young of Edberg, Dale Johnson of Sedgewick and Graham Galletly of Sedgewick.

Two-time Juno winner Emilie-Claire Barlow delivers jazz Continued from page 17

“I’ve always been a singer,” she said. “I just knew that’s what I was, who I was and what I was always going to do,” said Emilie-Claire. When she was seven, she was recruited to deliver the kid’s line in a jingle her mother was recording for Tide. The child’s natural, untrained voice, reliably in tune, guaranteed work in radio and television ads from the beginning. “I’m thrilled to be com-

ing to Camrose. In fact, it will be the first visit for me. It seems fitting to celebrate Canada’s 150 by playing a show in a Canadian city I’ve never been to before. I’ll be coming with my piano and bass trio, and we’re looking forward to a fun and intimate show-covering favourites from my repertoire over the years,” she said. The arrangements Barlow was beginning to write in college found their way into the making of her

1998 debut, Emilie-Claire Barlow Sings. The recording was a confident disc of jazz standards and contemporary favourites. Barlow’s latest musical journey is the daringly arranged and imaginatively chosen songs on her disc, Clear Day. The album, which ushers in a new phase of her career, began with her experiences four years ago on an icebreaker. Accepting an invitation to board the CCGS Amundsen

as an observer and sailing through the Northwest Passage to Resolute in Nunavut led Barlow to take stock of her life and make significant changes, which included leaving her marriage. As personal revelations were gradually reimagined into universal ones, the ambitious Clear Day began to take shape. Era and genre spanning songs that seemed to tell a chronological story of her emotional journey were selected as

the project morphed into a concept album with a narrative – an almost revolutionary move in an age where the streaming single track rules. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive.ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances.

Living for others by volunteering By Lori Larsen Experiencing the loss of a loved one is painful and overwhelming and is accompanied by a host of emotion that families and friends are often not prepared for. But with the grace of volunteers such as Camrose’s Arlene Peterson, living through those experiences can be somewhat eased. Arlene has been volunteering in our community for many years in one capacity or another and, most recently, received a 3,000-hour (volunteer) pin from St. Mary’s Hospital for her devote service to patients over the past four

but the patients who I have met through it have touched my life.” And she has, no doubt, touched theirs. In describing two separate families of dying loved ones that Arlene dealt with, she noted how the family took her in and made her a valuable part of the experience. “I spent time with their loved one when they (family) needed to go home or take a break,” she said speaking of the first family whose loved one died of lung cancer. “Sometimes families get so worn out, they need rest themselves and that is usually where I come in.” The second story Arlene related was that of a family

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Arlene Peterson, volunteer for over 15 years at St. Mary’s Hospital, sits in one of the four rooms at the hospital designed to assist palliative care patients and their loved ones feel a sense of home during the difficult experience.

years of her now 15-year volunteer service. “I am a retired LPN and I told my mom before I started school that I was going to be a nurse,” said Arlene. “Since I was five years old, that was my passion. “My dad taught first aid and his motto in life was living for others.” This motto also resonated deep within Arlene and is one she has proudly carried on through her own selfless help to others. Arlene retired early and started volunteering immediately in palliative care, which has always been her number one passion. “It is amazing how many people you meet that do not have family or are not close to their family and they need somebody at that time,” remarked Arlene with a degree of sadness in her voice. “I don’t even know how long I have been doing this,

dealing with the oncoming death of their young son. It was a testament to her own personal strength and ability to help people through one of the toughest situations imaginable. She met the young boy during her volunteer time as a teacher’s assistant at Sparling School and worked with him through grades 2 and 3. “I had never worked with children and death before that and he was just an amazing little man. “It was one of my most treasured experiences of death because he was a little boy who was very afraid, as was his mom.” Working through her own loss, the passing of her beloved father, Arlene found some solace in being able to not only make the journey through death easier for the boy, but for his family as well. Arlene explained to this little fellow that there would be someone there

when he needed to leave to help him ride his bike and be a boy, that someone – her father. On the evening the little boy passed away, Arlene was there to comfort the family and ensure them that their little boy was taken care of after they had to leave. “My goal is to make it easier for families when their loved ones pass away and I couldn’t have done it without my faith. To work with patients who are dying, you have to have a faith. You have to make it so that this death is going to be as easy as possible and that there is something to go to.” Arlene explained that St. Mary’s has opened four single rooms with a pullout bed, television, a little fridge, all the necessities needed to make a hospital room more homey for palliative patients and their families. However, there is a continual need for hospital beds so she, along with others, are working hard to get a Hospice in Camrose She also spoke about the dire need for funding and volunteers. “Last year, the hospital received funding to hire three staff members, and I was the volunteer who worked with them. We did bingo parties, movie afternoons, coffee parties, wheelchair travel and lots of things for patients waiting to be placed.” After a year the funding was removed, leaving only the volunteer position which is Arlene, who still spends time with patients reading, having coffee, doing crafts, playing cards or just listening, “They are just a vault of information. They are wonderful. “I really think we need more funding for entertainment for these people who are waiting for placement. We do have a wonderful group of volunteers and we are doing our best without having that organized group. “If I could say anything to encourage somebody to volunteer, it would be that it is energizing. I enjoy doing it so much, I get such pleasure out of it.” Arlene encourages everyone to get involved in any way they can to help make a difference in people’s lives whether that be patients at St. Mary’s, or any organization or individual who could benefit from your time. “I am going to do this as long as my legs will carry me.” Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? Church found open April 8 While on patrol, Camrose police stopped a vehicle for misusing a license plate. Further checks determined that the driver did not have valid registration, or insurance on the vehicle. The driver was charged and the vehicle was towed off the highway. Police conducted a traffic stop and noted an odor of cannabis marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Police arrested an 18-year-old woman and seized a quantity of cannabis marijuana. The woman was charged with possession of a controlled substance. A citizen reported that they saw a vehicle speeding on Parkview Drive while making the turn onto 53 Street. The vehicle struck the curb, ran off the road and was stuck on the boulevard. Police arrived and identified the 43-year-old woman driver of the vehicle to be intoxicated by alcohol. April 7 A report was received of a downtown church where a door had been propped open. There were concerns someone may be inside the building. Police attended and cleared the building and nothing suspicious was noted.

Cameron Lyster January 29, 1997 ~ March 19, 2017 The highest tribute to the dead is not grief but gratitude. – THORNTON WILDER

Throughout this difficult time of sorrow, we’ve heard again and again from Cam’s friends across the country that were grateful to have had his wit, intelligence, humor, good nature, easy smile and many other sunny attributes in their lives. His being present always made things brighter for those around him. Cam’s family would like to thank the many people who stepped forward to assist us with easy-to-prepare meals, beautiful bouquets and acts and words of comfort. Your friendships are precious to us. To the emergency personnel who arrived at our house and the emergency staff at the hospital, we know you did your best and appreciate your efforts so very much. Pastor Bill Harder, thank you for getting to Cam’s essence and for your wise words during this time. You led us through the darkness. Ron Pederson, we knew you would be the man to pay proper tribute to Cam. We cherish your words and the thoughts you gathered from other important people in Cam’s life. To the young people of Goldeye Cooperative Leadership Camp and the many young people who sent tributes, you spoke volumes about the young man Cam was. Your sharing gave us a glimpse at a different dimension to Cam and we treasure that knowledge. Ken Valgardson, he admired you greatly and would’ve been so pleased to have you read the poem that was so special to him. Thank you for offering to do that for him. Cam Parker and Bart Orr of Burgar Funeral Home, we knew we were in good hands. You guided us through this bewildering experience with professionalism and friendship. To the troops of 36 Service Battalion, Camp Aldershot, NS, you traveled 4,000 kilometers to honour your fallen brother. We understand his devotion to you. Your final service for him was a wonderful tribute to your friendships. A special thank you to Second Lieutenant Fred Paquette and Master Corporal Jonathan Veinot for making the travel arrangements so quickly and orderly. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for carrying him for us. To our sister and brother-in-law, Lara and Arnold White, who, in their own time of grief, willingly took in Cam’s troops and kept them well fed and comfortable. There are no words to express our gratitude to you and the angels who assisted you with your hospitality. You are all priceless. To the residents of Rosalind and Bawlf and the ladies who organized desserts and coffee, we felt a huge comfort in bringing Cam there. It is the place he called home and you are the people he called his community. To everyone who contributed to the Cameron W. Lyster Memorial, please be assured that your generosity will live on in an academic award which we are planning for future Bawlf high school graduates in Cam’s name. We thank you so very much for making this possible. Many others made generous donations in his memory to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. Thank you for supporting this cause that is close to our hearts. To everyone who took part in the Go Fund Me fundraiser to bring his troops to Camrose, your generosity knows no bounds and we are humbled by the love and support we received from far and wide. We will always be grateful for the light Cam shone on all of us. – Bob, Shirley and Greg Lyster

Fischer tackles 1928 Ford build, turns antique into hot rod By Murray Green

Ron Fischer of Camrose is building a 1928 Ford tudor hot rod that he hopes to complete prior to the Round Hill Show and Shine next fall. His first build was a show-stopping 1933 Ford coupe that is his pride and joy. “A friend of mine started this car 10 years ago and couldn’t finish it, so I took it over and I’m making it into

a bit of a rod. I want to keep the old sheet metal look, but modernize it with power brakes, power windows, air conditioning and some comforts that were not featured in 1928,” said Ron. “I want to be able to drive in comfort, but it will look mostly original on the outside.” He lowered the top of the cab by two-and-a-half inches and adjusted all of

Ron Fischer tinkers with his 1928 Ford.

the doors and windows to fit properly. “I put a bigger engine in it, so it will be considered a hot rod when I’m finished. I want the ride (suspension) to be better than it was originally, so I can drive it. If I wanted to drive to Banff and see the mountains, there would be no problem,” said Ron. “It’s all in fun.” He went with mostly

Ford parts, but added a Chevrolet 350 motor for reliability and easy access to parts. “Now they have a lot more as far as accessories for older cars. It is easier to pick up replica parts. It’s your ideas that you put into it. I don’t mind mixing it up. It is an interesting hobby.” The Ford Model A was the second huge success for the Ford Motor Company, after its predecessor, the Model T. First produced on Oct. 20, 1927, but not sold until Dec. 2, it replaced the venerable Model T, which had been produced for 18 years. “There is a bit of a story behind this. I told my daughter that I wanted a new Dodge Prowler when they came out. It looked like a street rod. I actually put a down payment on one, then my daughter challenged me to build one because I always said I could,” Ron explained. After high school, he went to NAIT to learn autobody and then to SAIT to learn refrigeration. “With my knowledge and skills, and my love for vehicles, I took the challenge on to build the 1933 Ford coupe. I let the Prowler go, I may still get one, one day. The the opportunity came up with this (1928) car and I took it over.” Ron will be going with

a dark blue in his new paint job. “I will keep them. I put too many hours into them to just sell them. I would like to build a truck one day. My brother helps me out and we should probably build him a vehicle. I will build at least one more if I have enough age left in me,” he laughed. “A lot of us want to build ’50s and ’60s vehicles because of memories. My first car when I got out of high school was a 1956 Cadillac four-door hard top and, together with a friend of mine, I rebuilt it in an autobody shop. That got me interested in the trade.” Ron enjoys the hobby and has more time to devout to his vehicles since turning his business over to his daughter. “This is a perfect situation for me. I help her out once in a while and work on my vehicles in the spare time. It’s the best of both worlds.” Even when he worked in the refrigeration business, he thought of restoring vehicles one day. “I’ve entered cruises and gone to car shows. I’m not a trophy chaser. The rewarding part is listening to other people’s comments and sharing stories.”

Test your air unit before it heats up Sounds a bit ironic, doesn’t it? And yet, it’s not a bad idea. The typical Canadian only uses their air conditioning for a few short months, and that means its sits idle for the greater part of the year. Turning it on every once in a while during the winter will prevent its various parts from seizing up. Obviously, we’re not suggesting that you crank up the AC on the coldest days of the year. But even the most northern regions of the country have some winter days that are warmer than others. That’s when you should turn on the unit for a few minutes. Doing so will prevent the valves and conduits from sticking. In some cases, the unit will turn on by itself if the vehicle is equipped with an automatic system. For those of us who have to turn on our AC manually, doing this every once in a while will not only “unrust” the parts, but remove some of the humidity that seeps into the vehicle’s interior. During the summer, it’s the humidity that makes being inside a vehicle so uncomfortable, while in the winter, humidity causes windows to fog up and become coated in frost. So, turn your AC unit on from time to time. Not only will it add to your comfort, but it could also save you from having to make costly repairs.

The Blackwood Quartet will be performing grand ole favorites and the gospel music that Elvis loved. The longtime gospel band will be sharing their love of music in Camrose on Monday, April 24 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The Blackwood family is the first family of gospel music, winning eight Grammy awards, 27 Dove awards and selling more than 60 million albums. They have performed in over 47 countries and have been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The year was 1934. Brothers Roy, Doyle and James Blackwood, along with Roy’s son R.W., formed

what was to become the most beloved and respected gospel group of all time, The Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Bill Shaw and Bill Lyles eventually joined the group and, together with James and R.W. Blackwood, this quartet went on to be featured on several television shows including The Johnny Cash Show, Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters show, the beloved American classic, Hee Haw, and the Arthur Godfrey Talent Show in 1954. It was equal to today’s American Idol. A few weeks later that same year in Clanton, Alabama, tragedy struck when two members of the group, R.W. Blackwood and Bill Lyles, were killed in

a plane crash. After the accident, many fans and critics alike believed that the quartet would not be able to go forth. However, as fate would have it, R.W.’s youngest brother Cecil Blackwood joined the group, along with the bass singer J.D. Sumner, silencing any doubts the public had about the quartet continuing to be a huge force in gospel music. Despite the family tragedy, earlier that same month, saw the birth of Cecil Blackwood’s son, Mark, who has held on to the tradition and sound that has made the Blackwood name world famous. Mark joined his family in the Blackwood Brothers Quartet in 1986, when he sang lead for many years

alongside his dad, Cecil, and many other talented singers. In 2012, Mark’s cousin Ron Blackwood retired and turned the reins over to Mark Blackwood. The Blackwood Quartet tours regularly singing music that lifts the spirits and hearts of many. The quartet has had the privilege of performing with Willie Nelson, Elvis and many other great artists. The Blackwood Quartet will have special guest Roger Anderson singing as Elvis on this tour. Elvis idolized the Blackwood family and wanted to sing with them. He was given that opportunity after the crash that killed R.W. Blackwood, but Elvis had already signed a

contract with Sun Records. He insisted the Blackwood Brothers sing at his mother’s funeral and they later sang at Elvis’ own funeral. Millions still love and adore Elvis’ music today, so the Blackwood Quartet is keeping his gospel music memory alive with this The Gospel Side of Elvis concert. To purchase tickets, visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive.ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances.

Repair or replace your cracked windshield

A windshield crack is something that should be remedied soon. The scenario is all too common. Drivers are traveling down the road, and a pebble gets kicked up and hits into their windshield, causing a small chip to appear. Slowly but surely that chip turns into a spreading, snaking crack that only gets worse with each bump and pothole. Having a broken windshield is not only unsightly and a big inconvenience, it can also be illegal. That’s because the crack reduces the efficacy of the window safety composition, meaning it may shatter in the event of an impact accident and cause extensive injuries. The crack also may impede a driver’s ability to see the road clearly. It’s important to note that liability car insurance typically doesn’t cover a cracked windshield that occurs in a collision. Instead, drivers hoping to be covered need to have collision insurance on their vehicle. However, not all windshields crack in a car accident. Many are damaged in nonaccident related circumstances, whether this be a tree branch that falls on the car or a rock kicked up from the roadway. It’s important to read an insurance policy thoroughly to be sure that nonaccident related cracks to the windshield will be covered. Even if the damage

is covered, it may not be worth the expense of paying the insurance deductible and filing a claim, which may end up raising your rate in the long run. Many small nicks can be repaired easily with a kit purchased from an automotive supply store. Inexpensive and userfriendly, the instructions guide users through the process of sealing the crack and preventing it from spreading. If the crack is beyond the scope of a do-it-yourself fix, a windshield repair service that specializes in this type of work might be necessary. These companies use products that harden quickly and reglaze the windshield so that the crack may not even be noticeable afterward. Upon inspection, a mechanic or a windshield replacement company may determine that the crack is not something that can be mended. The entire windshield will have to be replaced at this point. In some cases the windshield can be removed and replaced in the same day. While there is no way to prevent a cracked windshield entirely, there are certain ways to reduce the risk. This includes avoiding running over any debris on the road that can be kicked back at the windshield.

Traffic safety should always be your concern this year By Murray Green

Improve your traffic safety this spring. In 2013, 80 people were killed and 8,046 people were injured in collisions at intersections in Alberta. About 87 per cent of collisions are attributable to driver error. Driving properly and safely is important in reducing collisions. “In Alberta, three of the top five most frequently identified improper driver actions for drivers in casualty collisions were making a left turn across the path of an on-coming vehicle (12.9 per cent), committing a stop sign violation (7.8 per cent), and disobeying a traffic signal (7.2 per cent), indicated Becky Oxton, government regional traffic safety consultant. Across Canada, 28 per cent of fatalities and 40 per cent of serious injuries from collisions involved an intersection. More than half of all intersection fatalities and almost three-quarters of serious injuries occur in urban areas. At a stop sign, drivers are required to come to a complete stop, which means the wheels of the vehicle must not be moving, before proceeding safely through the intersection. This complete stop gives drivers the opportunity to look for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, or cyclists. Failure to stop at a stop sign results in a $388 fine and three demerits. A sidewalk also acts as a stop sign. Before entering a street from a road, service road, alley, driveway or parking lot, a vehicle must stop unless marked otherwise. Keep intersections clear so that other traffic may proceed if the light changes. When vehicles arrive at

a four-way stop sign, allow the vehicle that arrived first to proceed first. If vehicles arrive simultaneously, right of way is given to the vehicle on the right, while left-turning vehicles yield to approaching traffic. Just because one has the right of way does not mean it is safe to proceed through the intersection. Keep watching for oncoming traffic. The proper procedure for executing a turn is to signal first to provide reasonable warning to other drivers of your intention to turn. Then, check traffic and conditions on both left and right and left again before making the turn. Check for vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Maintain your lane through the turn. Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk carries a fine of $776 plus four demerit points. Pedestrians always have right of way at an unmarked intersection or stop sign unless otherwise indicated by signage. Give elderly pedestrians or disabled people more time to cross the road, as they may be less aware of their surroundings and unable to react quickly to sudden danger. Pedestrians may indicate their intention to cross the road by holding their arm straight and pointing across the road in the direction they intend to cross. Pay attention! Remove headphones and put away cellphones or other electronic devices when crossing the street. Execute safe left turns. Keep the vehicle’s wheels straight so that you do not cross in front of oncoming traffic if struck from behind. When there is suitable space, make sure the turning path is clear of traffic,

HOCKEY SUPPORT

including pedestrians and it is safe to go before proceeding through the turn. Be sure to stay on the right side of the center line through the turn. Only one car should be in the intersection to execute a left turn. An uncontrolled intersection is any intersection that does not have traffic signs or signals. When approaching an uncontrolled intersection, check left and right for traffic, slow down and be prepared to stop. Yield the right of way to the vehicle on the right. Be alert as other drivers may not be expecting any traffic at the intersection and that could result in a collision. Allow emergency vehicles to approach a red light with lights flashing. Stop and give the right of way to emergency vehicles until they have passed through the intersection. Failure to do so is a $233 fine plus three demerits. At uncontrolled and three-way stop intersections, drivers must always yield to the vehicle on the right. Directions given by a police officer overrule traffic signs or signals. If you are in a funeral procession, you may follow the convoy through intersections without stopping for red lights or stop signs provided you have headlights on, are not the lead vehicle and are following the vehicle ahead closely. Flashing red acts as a stop sign; vehicles must come to a stop before crossing the stop line or crosswalk. Additional information and resources can be found on the Safe Roads website at saferoads.com/ drivers/drivers-safety.html.

Make sure car seats are safely installed for infants After nine long months, and perhaps years of planning, your beautiful new baby is ready to come home with you. Just as much as your home life will change with the addition of this new bundle of joy, so should your driving habits and the safety precautions you take. Every day, hundreds of children are seriously hurt or killed in car accidents. While there could be numerous factors involved with any vehicle accident, safety experts across the country agree that the majority of child injuries

and deaths could be prevented by the proper use of safety seats and belts. Children have individual needs at specific ages, therefore it is important to be readily aware of these needs even before your son or daughter arrives. Though this information is widely available and often discussed, it can sometimes be confusing or overwhelming for a new parent, or any driver for that matter. To help you and your little one along on your way, here are recommendations for safe transportation of children.

• Infants should ride in rear-facing child safety seats until they have reached both 20 pounds and one year of age. Infant-only seats are small, portable and fit newborns best. Never place a rear-facing child safety seat in front of an airbag. In an accident, the airbag will discharge, hitting the seat and potentially harming your baby. The best place to install this kind of car seat is the back seat. • Children who have outgrown their rear-facing seats should ride in forward-facing child safety seats for as long

as the child fits in it (ears below the top of the back of the seat and shoulders below the seat strap slots). These seats are designed for use by children who are at least one year old and weigh at least 20 pounds. They are used until a child is about 40 pounds and four. Concerned about not having your little one by your side? Reflections safety mirrors provide a clear view of backseat passengers while letting the driver focus on the road. • Children who have out-

grown their child safety seats but are too small to wear seat belts properly should ride in booster seats. • Seat belts fit properly when they can be worn with the lap portion of the belt low and tight across the upper thighs, and the shoulder portion across the shoulder and over the chest without cutting across the face and neck. Never tuck the shoulder belt under the child’s arm or behind the child’s back. Use both the shoulder and lap portions of the safety belt.

Augustana students learn from the past at museum By Lori Larsen

A group of University of Alberta Augustana Campus students are literally learning from the past as part of an Art History class taught by Augustana Department of Fine Arts and Humanities assistant professor Andrea Korda as they work with a variety of artifacts and collections at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. “The students are all from Augustana and creating this exhibition as part of their coursework for an Art History class focusing on museum studies,” said Korda. “They are a diverse group of students, ranging from second to fourth year, and from visual art majors to physical education majors.” To begin with, the students analyzed questions regarding the role of a museum (strictly educational), who a museum should represent and what visitors should be expected to do at a museum. After gathering thoughts, the students then explored collections and artifacts with the ultimate goal of creating their own exhibition. The exhibits will be on display starting Tuesday, April 11 from 12:15 until 1 p.m. for public viewing. Residents are invited to come and experience the stories about, not only the artifacts and collections, but the Augustana students themselves and their own experiences working hands on with a piece of Camrose and district’s past. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

PERSONAL DRINKING A PROBLEM? Alcoholics Anonymous, call 780-672-9406 or 780-608-8798. LOOKING FOR PEACE OFFICER who stopped me last year in Strome and then three months later came looking for me. You know who you are! Is a coffee date still available? Please reply to P.Ocamrose@gmail. com. LOST THAT LOVING FEELING? Find it with a personal ad in The Camrose Booster classifieds. Ph. 780-672-3142.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Jason Scott

Diamond tribute at Legion By Murray Green

Jason Scott’s Diamond Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond music show will be held at Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m. The songs of Neil Diamond continue to attract new fans to go along with the legions of old. Scott portrays an extremely entertaining recognition to the music and talent of this legendary singersongwriter. “Neil Diamond has recorded his music so many times, and changed it so much, that interpreting that music can in itself be an art,” said Jason Scott, creator and Diamond performance. “When you look at Neil Diamond’s history and career of six decades, you realize the music and the possibilities of that music are unlimited.” Diamond is not just a simple songwriter, but a composer and performer as well. His music has a universality and timelessness that transcends his own personality and the personalities of anyone performing his music. The proof of this is the audience itself, crossing all generations. Scott began attending a Conservatory of Music in Toronto at the age of five, achieving first degree honors and graduation by age 15. In his 20s, Scott toured extensively with nightclub and concert bands and in his 30s he was a Canadian recording artist, writer and performer. Then his life changed. In 2005, in Las Vegas, he was the first ever Canadian international performer to win the “Be a Legend” celebrity tribute artist competition as Neil Diamond, at the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino. Scott was awarded the Sunburst Convention of Celebrity Tribute Artists Best Platinum Showcase Award. His show Diamond Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond will be the only Canadian performance artist, cast in an upcoming feature length motion picture titled Diamond Mountain. Currently preparing for a mid-2017 release, this motion picture was filmed in the United States, England, Ireland, Australia, Santiago Chili South America and British Columbia, Canada. Scott was honored to be the only Canadian Neil performance artist chosen to be part of this film’s 14 artist multi-national cast. Tickets are available at Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion at 780-672-3325. Members and public are welcome.

Refugee Centre

Come Join Our Team

By Lori Larsen

Members of the Camrose Refugee Coordinating Committee (CRCC) are looking to establish a Camrose Refugee Centre (CRC), a place where new Canadians to Camrose can receive needed support and assistance. Residents are encouraged to attend a meeting on April 12 at 7 p.m. in the upper level of the old AGT building located directly beside the Messiah Lutheran Church, to hear on the proposed motion to establish a CRC. “The idea is to get as many people who are interested in supporting refugees to come and join us to discuss it and to see what the possibilities are and how we can help,” said CRCC chair Erhard Pinno. The CRCC are proposing that the centre consist of a small classroom space, a separate small play space while parents are busy with courses and/or conversations, two small offices for private conversations, access to washroom facilities and phone access, which is already the primarily setup offered in the upper floor of the meeting location. “We want to make this recommendation (locate the CRC in the upper floor of the AGT building owned by Messiah Lutheran Church) in consultation with Messiah and that we do this on a volunteer basis in the coming year to see how the needs develop and how we can respond,” said Pinno. Despite the CRCC not receiving any governmentsponsored refugees which they would be directly responsible for, there are refugee families living in Camrose who are in need. Presently the CRCC is assisting with approximately five to 10 refugee families in Camrose in either the refugees’ homes, the volunteers’ homes or other less convenient locations. Having a CRC would provide a space that would centrally locate the volunteers, services and information on other services offered in Camrose. “We really want this to be the window for the refugees so they have a place that the community knows of,” added Pinno. “If there is a refugee family that has some needs, they can be referred to us and we will be able to provide them as much as we can with different volunteers.” The committee is hoping to establish a base of volunteers who would individually be able to maintain some consistency with the different services provided, such as a continual administrative person (volunteer) who could assist refugees with filling and filing required government forms.

Location is everything and this wonderfully maintained bi-level is a dream come true situated in the exquisite Park Ridge neighbourhood close to the beautiful Stoney Creek Valley. As you approach the home, you immediately understand how well kept it is by its attractive landscaping. It fits perfectly into this upscale neighbourhood. The half moon accent window over the front door floods the home with warm sunlight. In the living room, the natural light continues to come in through the three large windows, an ideal place to set a cozy loveseat and curl up with a beverage by the fireplace. Adjoining the living room is a large dinette area with a patio door that leads onto a large raised deck. Gas caps removed April 3

Camrose police were advised that several vehicles had their gas caps removed, while parked along 58th Street in the 4300 block. It appears that nothing has been damaged other than the caps being removed. Police have received complaints regarding skateboarders that continue to board in front of prominent buildings within Camrose. Youth have been warned that the skatepark is their designated area for boarding. Specific signage indicating “no skateboarding” is being considered by involved property owners. Police dealt with a property dispute between two males. Police assisted and told both parties that their matter was civil.
