In recent weeks, the spring melt caused impressive volumes of water to flow under the ice on Mirror Lake. Even though the picturesque lake remained completely covered by ice, water was tumbling over the spillway on the south end of Mirror Lake. Late last week, it was obvious that the amount of water roaring over the Mirror Lake spillway had increased significantly as the water-logged ice on the reservoir had disappeared due to steady rain, gradually warmer daytime temperatures and no overnight freezing. These same conditions being experienced locally are also prevalent to the west and north of the City meaning that water from thawing in the Hay Lakes area and south of Miquelon Lake is, increasingly, heading our way. Water flow relevant to the Mirror Lake spillway and the City creek system is measured by the provincial government just north of Camrose in the creek in the Braim subdivision. On Thursday, when this photo was taken, data collected determined that 3,000 litres of water per second was roaring over the spillway and through Jubilee Park en route to Dried Meat Lake. By Monday morning, data collected showed that 3,880 litres are now moving every second on it’s natural path to the south. The City reminds residents that it can be dangerous, even life threatening, to walk too close to the Mirror Lake spillway or along fast-moving creeks within Camrose. The City also asks residents to exercise caution when walking along the paved trails in Jubilee Park and around Mirror Lake in the coming weeks and to obey all safety signage in the area.
