So there I was, on the edge of catastrophizing, when a voice in my mind said, “Ask an empowering question.”

That voice belonged to one of my early mentors, Jeanie Marshall, who taught that some questions are empowering and others are not.

She pointed out that some questions we ask ourselves are constricting and disempowering. Examples are, “Why is this happening to me?” or “When will this ever be finished?” or “What’s wrong with me?”

When we ask questions like that, our thinking narrows and none of the answers are happy. We can practically feel our energy depleting, our spirits sinking, and, quite possibly, our Inner Victim taking over and disconnecting us from personal power.

On the other hand, some questions empower us.

They expand our thinking, open us to new possibilities, tap into our creative genius and take us to our inner wellspring of personal power.

Examples of empowering questions are … “What can I learn from this?” “What’s a gift in this situation?”

“What’s within my power to do right now?”

“How can I be a positive presence in this situation?”

So – on the edge of catastrophizing – I blessed that voice in my mind! I asked, “What’s in my power to do right now?” and some ideas came to me. As the day went on, I asked questions like “What’s a gift in this situation?” and “What am I grateful for?” The answers to those questions were happy empowering ones. The day unfolded in a much better direction.

Missed point

In responding to a letter by Tamara Morris, Rachel Plantz begins by saying “I respect that you have your own opinion. I will respect that,” but then follows with, “But how dare you.” What exactly does Ms. Plantz mean by, “But how dare you?” Does she mean, “How does Tamara Morris dare have an opinion?

How dare she voice her opinion? How dare she have her opinion published in a local newspaper?” That comment

by Ms. Plantz shows neither respect, nor a willingness to accept an opinion that differs from her own.

I think Ms. Plantz missed the whole point of the letter. It seems to me that Morris was calling attention to the fact that the Beauty and the Beast movie targets an audience of children whose parents

expect the movie to entertain their children without exposing them to adult issues.

While “Disney isn’t just about fairy tails (I think Ms Plantz meant “tales”), Beauty and the Beast is a fairy tale, and Disney could have remained true to the original version instead of adding their own spin on it.

I would also ask Ms. Plantz how she knows The Camrose Booster prints “only what they agree with these days” and whether she has actually spoken with anyone at the newspaper to verify her assertion that “circulation has gone down. And will continue to go down.” Of course, fact-checking is tedious work; it’s easier to just make unfounded claims and hope that nobody will notice.

This past week has been filled with music and dancing as another local musical festival was held.

As I watched and listened to Chorazz perform a number of songs in the Jack Stuart School gym, I couldn’t help but be a bit nostalgic as I watched their director.

In the fall of 1978, the Spilas arrived in Camrose as Tom had accepted a music teaching position at

Camrose Composite High School. Now, thirty-nine years later, Tom is finally finishing his work at the school.

During all those years, Tom has selflessly given of his time and talent as he has encouraged hundreds of students to develop their musical gifts. He has been such an inspiration to so many students and the whole community.

In addition to helping gifted musicians to excel, Tom was always trying to encourage everyone to perform regardless of their level of ability.

During his time at the Comp, the music program received countless awards on the local, provincial and national level. His work with choral and band groups was quite renowned.

I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge Tom’s wife Crystal who supported him the whole time.

It is impossible to adequately pay tribute to Tom’s dedication and commitment to music in Camrose in a few words!

What a gift the Spilas have been to Camrose!

A long time ago, I learned about closed and open questions – useful in grammar, useful in designing questionnaires and sometimes useful in a crisis situation.

Closed questions can be answered in one or two words: “How old are you? What time is it? Would you like a glass of water?” Closed questions are useful when you need quick concrete information.

Open questions cannot usually be answered with one or two words: “What can I do today to move forward?

What would it be like if this problem were solved?

What if I could have everything I desire?

What am I grateful for in this situation?”

Open questions often begin with What or How. Empowering questions often include the word “I” (not “they” or “them” or “you”), because ultimately “I” am the only person with power to impact my situation.

Empowering questions tend to be open questions that tap into a creative place in our brains. Our brains were built to be puzzle solvers; they love exploring and discovering possibilities. Ask yourself an empowering question and let it go … At some point in the next while, you’ll likely begin to think of possibilities that had not occurred to you before. Not all will be immediately useful – but all will add something you’ve not thought of before.

There is a time and place for closed questions – when you need quick information or want not to overwhelm someone. But when you want to explore, want to open up a conversation, want to find out more than the obvious, open-ended questions are a good bet – if they go to a happy empowering place.

Don’t ask what you really don’t want to know

I also think it’s never a good idea to ask a question for which you really don’t want to experience the answer.

“What could go wrong? What’s not to like?

How long could it take?”

Of course it’s perfectly fine – and sensible – to ask “What could go wrong and how could I avoid or deal with that?” The addition makes it an empowering question. But when we toss off a question like, “What could go wrong?” when we really mean we think nothing could go wrong, our clever puzzle-loving brains will go in search of an answer.

Be careful what you ask for, and be careful what you ask! So … what empowering question are you asking right now? ***

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Ronelle Kiziak of KidSport Camrose assisted Cody and Emma Berry in finding a bicycle for their age at the bike sale in the Max McLean Arena on April 8. The event was a great success for the community and KidSport Camrose with 75 bikes consigned. The proceeds from the consignment, barbecue, raffle and batting cage totaled over $2,500 and the funds will be used to help children with fees and equipment for activities. The second annual Bike Swap will be held next spring.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose residents are once again being encouraged to Get Out and Get Active all the while tracking their activity during the GOGA challenge from April 24 to June 4. Pictured left to right are representatives from the Camrose partners in GOGA: City of Camrose Recreation Director Dawn Mercereau, University of Alberta Augustana Campus Fitness Centre Coordinator Jalene Johnsen and Primary Care Network Exercise Specialist Connie Harrison. A variety of activities will be offered to participants of GOGA throughout Camrose during the challenge.

Get out get active

Camrose Primary Care Network, in conjunction with 21 other PCNs across the province, are challenging residents to “Get Out and Get Active” during the fourth annual GOGA Challenge.

Join in the initiative to lead a healthier more active lifestyle from April 24 until June 4.

GOGA is a free six-week online program for all ages which keeps track of participants’ physical activities (walking, running, swimming, basketball, cycling, gardening, etc.), converting them into steps, which then takes them on a virtual health journey. By recording activity each week, participants will be able to see their online character transform and experience for themselves the positive impact of physical activity.

Participants are encouraged to track and log their activity each day. They can monitor their progress online to see how far they have gone on their virtual health journey, as well as to see how their overall team is doing. Over the six weeks, a GOGA character transforms from sick to healthy as more physical activity is done. During the challenge, a pedometer or other step-tracking device can be used to track physical activity. The online program can also translate time in various activities into the equivalent in steps.

The Camrose PCN will be collaborating with the City of Camrose, University of Alberta Augustana Fitness Centre and the Camrose Public Library to provide GOGA participants with an optimal experience.

The following are a list of Camrose activities and dates offered to GOGA participants.

On Monday, April 24 from 12:15 until 12:45 p.m., the Augustana Fitness Centre will be leading an outdoor miniexercise class (20 minutes) on the soccer field at the east edge of the Camrose Recreation Centre parking lot. In the event of inclement weather, participants will able to use the indoor track for a combination of walking/exercises led by the Fitness Centre.

On Wednesday, May 3 from 12:15 until 12:45 p.m., Camrose PCN exercise specialist Connie Harrison will be leading an outdoor walk, leaving from the Camrose Recreation Centre parking lot.

On Wednesday, May 10 from 12:15 until 12:45 p.m., participants can partake in a game of pickleball at the Max McLean Arena courts.

Pickleball club members will be available to demonstrate how to play and provide equipment to try a game.

On Wednesday, May 17 from 12:15 until 12:45 p.m., lane swimming is reserved for GOGA participants at the Aquatic Centre.

On Wednesday, May 24 from 12:15 until 12:45 p.m., Connie Harrison will be leading an exercise session at the Outdoor Gym in Jubilee Park.

On Wednesday, May 31 from 12:15 until 12:45 p.m., Augustana Fitness Centre staff will give an orientation to their equipment and lead a short exercise session.

The Camrose Public Library is also scheduling a weekly 30-minute walk during the GOGA challenge. Interested participants can meet at the Library every Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. A different route will be planned for each week starting April 25.

In addition to partnering on events, Augustana Fitness has agreed to give each GOGA participant a six-punch pass to the Fitness Centre to be used during the duration of the GOGA challenge.

Prostate cancer is the leading form of cancer diagnosed in Canadian men. A Man Van (a mobile unit to take a simple blood test) will be on 48 Avenue

“One in seven men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in Alberta every year, a fact we didn’t realize until an employee for Trademark was diagnosed,” said Mark Suchy, owner/operator of Trademark Pumping. “Men who are diagnosed early have a fantastic rate of success.”

He proposed a challenge to raise $30,000 in funding for Prostate Cancer Canada on behalf of Trademark Pumping and to paint his new 38-metre pump truck. His challenge was easily met due to the generosity of others.

“The truck will be on display during the event,” said Mark.

If diagnosed early, cancer may be treatable.

Even when the disease is advanced, treatment can eradicate symptoms and prolong survival. Survival rates for cancer have been improving for the last four years, perhaps due to the importance that is placed on early detection.

All men over 40 should get checked. In Alberta, one in seven men will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. When detected early, prostate cancer is one of the most successfully treated types of cancer.

Treating the physical symptoms of cancer, or related disease is only part of the recovery process.

“I was under great doctor care for years, because my brother had prostate cancer three or four years ago. I knew I would have to keep an eye on my PSA (blood test levels for potential of prostate cancer) to see if the level was increasing,” said Jim Robichaud of Trademark Pumping. “If it increases then you are at a high risk. They will be going through several tests and creating awareness of getting checked regularly.”

The PSA is a simple blood test and the Men’s Health Measurements test your body mass, blood pressure and random blood glucose. “I’m trying to bring awareness to prostate cancer because guys like me and people I know tend to go to the doctor once every 10 years. I want to send the message that guys need to take care of themselves.”

In the past Trademark Pumping has gone with red coloured trucks. “My new truck will be blue with a prostate cancer logo on it to support them.”

Jim’s levels increased to the point he needed a prostate biopsy and standard 12 samples were taken. “Ten of the 12 samples were positive. They gave me five different methods to choose from to deal with my prostate condition. The biggest problem right now is that the awareness isn’t great enough,” said Jim. “If we get the awareness out there, we will feel good about people being saved.”

Delivering spoonfuls of kindness

By Lori Larsen For most of us, preparing and consuming a healthy meal is something we may take for granted.

But for some residents in Camrose, it can be quite challenging.

Fortunately, kind people such as Bev MaertensPoole, volunteer with Meals on Wheels to ensure people who need assistance are eating well.

“I have been with Meals on Wheels since 1972 when it started,” remarked Bev. Meals on Wheels began in Camrose with a group of ladies from the United Church who saw a vision of helping those unable to provide healthy meals for themselves.

“They approached other church congregations,” said Bev, “Asking us to come to an organizational meeting and get something started.”

A member of the Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church (Camrose), Bev was very interested in becoming part of this great initiative.

“It is not strictly churches that help out now,” said Bev. “Businesses and individuals, lots of people have become involved.

“Food was always an interest of mine,” said Bev. As a Home Economics teacher, the fit seemed natural and the idea of ensuring these residents were going to receive a healthy meal resonated with Bev. “I started teaching in Provost and was there for seven years, then when we (her husband Bill and family) moved to Camrose, I filled in at the Comp (Camrose Composite High School) teaching HomeEc while we were raising our children.”

Bev and Bill moved to Camrose 50 years ago in July and have raised their children here and have been active members of the high school and the community.

Not only does Bev deliver Meals on Wheels, she is also the coordinator for drivers for the Bethel Lutheran Church.

“The most fun part is delivering though,” smiled Bev, indicating that it is more than a meal that is being delivered, it is a social interaction – an opportunity to check in on these people and ensure their well-being.

“I know if it were my parent receiving a meal, just knowing that they were being checked on once a day would be a relief.

“It might just be hello and goodbye, but there is still that interaction.”

Sadly, Bev recalled a time when they did arrive with a meal and found the recipient in distress and in need of assistance beyond the daily meal delivery.

When asked why volunteering was so important, Bev replied without hesitation, “It is part of the responsibility of living in a community. I grew up in a home where we were part of a community. We made our own fun and if something needed to be done, you did it.

“Not to mention, there is satisfaction in people working together to complete a project or provide a service.”

She explained that volunteering can take many forms throughout a person’s life and the type of volunteering often depends on what stage a person is at in their lives.

“When you have children, you become involved with things such as Brownies or figure skating. I was involved in the Brownie program for quite a while and it was fun. It progresses as your life changes.”

At this point in Bev’s life with her children grown and living their own lives, she has found other avenues for her passion for giving back to the community.

“I also volunteer at the Jeanne and Peter

Lougheed Performing Arts Centre now. I am enjoying that because that is purely for myself. I go and do my thing as a front-of-house volunteer.

“That facility is so good for Camrose and anything we can do to help it out, we should.

“If you are just willing to give of yourself a little bit, it is a wonderful way to get to know your community. Just get involved.”

Meals on Wheels is a registered society that offers a hot noon meal delivered to clients’ homes by volunteers up to five days per week (not including stat holidays) and a frozen food program (all frozen foods are prepared without food additives).

All hot meals are prepared daily from scratch and are low fat and low salt consisting of a soup or salad, main course and dessert and are based on Canada’s Food Guide.

This year, Camrose Meals on Wheels celebrates 45 years of service.

Dealing with grief and bereavement of family, friends, neighbours or colleagues can be difficult and often can go far beyond condolences. To assist residents, the Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) is offering a one-day free Bereavement and Grief Workshop on Friday, May 5 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. (including lunch) at the Camrose Public Library.

The workshop will explore society’s perceptions and expectations when speaking of bereavement, grief and mourning.

“Since 2011, we have met hundreds of wonderful people who have taught us the uniqueness of grief and loss,” says certified grief facilitator Donna Lynne Erickson.

“This seminar is for everyone. Learn how to walk alongside another who is suffering loss (of any type).

Understand the nature of grief and how it affects your physical, mental, emotional, cognitive and social realms.

There may be tears, sure to be laughter and likely a shift in your perspective when it comes to understanding the ritual of mourning.”

The workshop will include some of the following content: how to be a companion/grief helper to someone who has experienced a loss; types of loss: mobility, health, earning potential; the importance of integrating loss into our own lives first; that everyone’s grief journey is unique and that we all grieve differently; how to recognize signs of complicated grief; and how to access appropriate community resources.

“Learn how to create a safe place for people to work through their new reality – without judgment or shame.

There is no cure, no drug and no power to get things back to the way it was before the loss event. But, there is hope,” added Erickson.

Facilitator Colette Howery a retired RN also certified in grief support stated, “No one is exempt from the heartache of losing a loved one, so let’s learn together how we can help each other.”

Camrose PCN executive director Stacey Strilchuk added, “PCN physicians and staff are really pleased with the success of the grief and bereavement workshops which we have offered for over four years now. Participant feedback has been extremely positive and we know we are making a difference in people’s lives by offering this type of support in the community.”

Canada highlighted by Camerata

Camrose Camerata invites you to join them for a concert of music Made in Canada.

The choir returns to the intimate setting of Bethel Lutheran Church (4102-73 Street) for this concert, which begins at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 23.

“In this concert, the choir will explore an eclectic range of music by Canadians of all stripes. Camerata is excited to be exploring the rich choral traditions of Canada, where so many styles and musical colours can be found,” said director Joy-Anne Murphy.

“With character ranging from comical to sublime, our concert selections will include classic folk songs, depictions of some of our varied Canadian landscapes and cultures, a sampling of quintessential sacred music, and arrangements of popular songs by contemporary artists.”

Camerata has spent this choir season (from September until this final concert) commemorating Canada’s sesquicentennial.

“All the music for both concerts and our Christ-

mas Lessons and Carols has been either of Canadian origin or composed/ arranged by Canadian choral composers. We’ve done folk songs as well as music from pop culture, pieces that highlight our vast geography and just some of the many cultures that have come together to create the Canada we know today,” she added.

This concert will highlight some music that pokes fun at quirks like the “Black Fly Song” which calls up different regions of the country with folk music of the Atlantic seaboard as well as the prairies, and gives a taste of some of our best choral music over the past 150 years from Canadian composers renowned the world over.

Camerata is a chamber choir, meaning the group is fairly small in order to remain flexible, while still having enough singers to support louder sounds.

“This year, we have 19 singers, plus our accompanist and our director.”

Camerata was formed in the fall of 2003 by artistic directors Darryl Dewalt and Joy-Anne to take

advantage of the wealth of musicality in Camrose.

“We take our name from an Italian word first used in the Renaissance to describe a group of people who share a strong passion for a particular art form, who get together (often in a chamber or ‘camera’) to share their loved art form.”

The mandate is to take advantage of the high level of musicianship that already exists within the Camrose community, giving singers of a variety of levels of experience and ability the opportunity to expand their choral horizons to bring high caliber choral music from all styles and eras, languages and cultures to our members and our audience in the greater Camrose community; to teach and learn about great choral music and artistic expression both within our choir and within the community at large.

Flo spreads reggae Canadian culture

Montreal artist Flo will share Canadian reggae music with local residents in the first Canada 150 show of the year at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m.

The Canada 150 series in Camrose is co-hosted by the Bailey Theatre and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre.

“Flo will be the first artist in our half of the series,” said Geraint Osborne, who worked on arranging the

series for the Bailey. “He plays a mix of reggae, funk and blues and relies on his extensive world experience to infuse his music with a lot of variety.”

His eclectic background served him well as he opened for The Temptations at the United Nations.

Flo will also bring fellow Montreal musician, Auresia, to the Bailey. Auresia is originally from Alberta. She mixes her Ukrainian background with her love for French and Spanish music.

The show is sure to bring the multicultural nature of our nation to the forefront.

Flo throws his love of reggae and roots in various projects on the North American scene. His musical character has been shaped by his travels and encounters.

Police chief retiring after 36 years of public service

After 36 years of dedicated public service, Camrose’s Chief of Police Darrell Kambeitz is trading in the badge to partake in a new path in life.

Illustrious career

Kambeitz began his career on May 4, 1981 during a difficult time in Alberta, where policing jobs were hard to obtain, let alone keep. “I was fortunate enough to be offered a job in Camrose and part of me saw that as a stepping stone to a larger organization, but once I got here and realized how privileged we were here, I never looked back.”

The greatness of the Camrose community took a strong hold on another asset. “I was never disappointed,” said Kambeitz. “I was provided with every opportunity that I ever wanted to pursue, given training opportunities that were envied by colleagues across Alberta. With great support from home, I took advantage of every opportunity, not only for myself but for the organization.”

Kambeitz was able to advance through the ranks of Camrose Police Service including the administrative roles of inspector, deputy chief and ultimately chief for the past 10 years.

“I have had such a privileged career,” said Kambeitz.

“We were performing our duties, dealing with the public, when a very kind restaurateur arrived with hot coffee for us in support.”

As Kambeitz finished the story he couldn’t help but laugh. “We were shocked when we had a sip and realized it was hot cof-

“They have shortlisted as of this weekend to three candidates and are hoping to have my replacement by this summer.”

There will be a gap between Chief Kambeitz’s official last day and when the new chief begins, which is not unusual for policing organizations. However, Kambeitz rests assured that Camrose Police Service will not be affected due to the capabilities of Deputy Chief Lee Foreman and all the members of the agency.

Policing Camrose

Policing a community for 36 years is bound to be filled with memories from how it was done in the beginning to the amazing advancements and continual movement forward.

“When I think back to policing this City (past and present), we have some amazing people who are well trained, well committed and very dedicated to the safety of our community.

“Those members are tasked every day with the duty of ensuring the safety of Camrose citizens from all sorts of criminal activity.

“Any criminal element that you hear about or read about in the newspapers or see on the news that are in the larger centres, Edmonton and Calgary, are here, too,” said Kambeitz. “Motorcycle clubs, organized crime, drug distribution, whereever they see a market to fill, they will participate.”

Kambeitz explained that Camrose Police Service spends a great deal of time mitigating those elements by identifying and targeting individuals and ultimately holding them criminally responsible.

“It is a direct role for our major crimes unit and their crime reduction teams and we have done a very good job, not only as an organization, but as a

vice 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Our last environmental scan showed that 40 per cent of our calls were actually not police functions, but were directly related to people with mental health issues, child custody matters, civil property disputes and general assistance.”

Despite the excellent services available in Camrose, Kambeitz indicated the police are servicing these calls after hours.

“It is just something that in policing we need to work better with our partners so those people are going to the right organizations to begin with, because usually police officers are not the people they want to see in those situations and it can cause conflict.”

But policing isn’t all serious. There is a lighter side to the occupation and when asked to relate a fun story from his career, Kambeitz had no problem stirring up memories.

In relating this story, Kambeitz added that daily humour is a requirement in policing, and for all who know him, they understand his wonderful sense of humour is an asset to the service and a constant reminder to the police officers to remember all the funny things and good things in order to remain positive and sane.

Hard shoes to fill

The position for Camrose Police Chief will be chosen from a national competition that was advertised by the Police Commission. “ They (Police Commission) are getting close

Kambeitz happily noted that one of the priorities the Police Commission made perfectly clear in the national competition for the next police chief was that they must reside in Camrose and they will continue with the accreditation process.

The position of chief is responsible for the policing actions of all the police officers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which includes providing direction to and holding the police officers accountable under the Police Act and, beyond that, budgetary requirements and recent downloading from the provincial government have added increased responsibilities.

“For the right reasons, they want us (police chiefs) to be engaged at levels we never have before. Literally, we are drafting police strategies for them, which takes a lot of time away from our offices.”

With new leadership and change comes some uncertainty and stress.

In recognizing that, Chief Kambeitz has made it a priority in the past few months to help alleviate some of that concern among the service.

Future in policing

Kambeitz commented on the future of policing and some of the challenges facing young recruits. “The opioid crisis is probably the most known because of the lives it is currently affecting.

“We have been very fortunate in Camrose that we have so many like-minded stakeholders that we have been able to get ahead of it and address the educational components and developed hubs that provide those social services and alternatives to individuals who are ready to seek that help,” adding there have not been any deaths directly associated with the use of fentanyl.

Kambeitz stated that the police service will continue efforts in the fight against opioids, specifically fentanyl, and will join the province in the initiative to create safe communities.

“As the chief of police of a community, I am opposed to the creation of safe injection sites if it is just some place where someone can go to use illegal drugs, but if it is a wellness centre or a wellness hub where they have access to all other services that could eventually put them in a better place, then I am all for it.”

Looking forward, other challenges include the proposed legalization of marijuana and the continual growth of cyber crime.

“The social media aspect of that will be interesting. We are receiving calls for service that we never dreamed of in the past through social media, including threats against persons, concerns as a result of suicidal comments, identity theft and increased risk to lives and property.”

Kambeitz also spoke of the numerous scams that are continually plaguing citizens and that a great deal of time is spent by the Service educating residents on the Dark Net, the criminal component of the internet.

“I see those as being the biggest challenges for policing, whether you are in Camrose or Edmonton.

There are no boundaries or borders when it comes to criminal activity.”

The automotive section of

GMC started operations more than 105 years ago

GMC, known as the General Motors Truck Company in the past, started out primarily focusing on trucks and utility vehicles. It sold pickup and commercial trucks, buses, vans, military vehicles and sport utility vehicles around the world.

The company was founded by William C. Durant with headquarters in Detroit, Michigan back on July 22, 1911.

The McLaughlin Car Company was founded in 1907 when Samuel McLaughlin and Durant agreed to a contract to produce Buick Model F power trains for 15 years at cost plus. The cars became known as McLaughlin Buicks. On September 16, 1908, Durant and McLaughlin started General Motors Holding Company after Durant exchanged $500,000 of Buick stock for $500,000 of McLaughlin Motor Company stock. McLaughlin also exchanged his Buick stock for General Motors stock and in 1910 was invited to be on the board of General Motors in Detroit.

In 1909, GM purchased

the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan, forming the basis of the General Motors Truck Company, from which the GMC Truck brand name was derived.

The company developed some of the earliest commercial trucks ever designed, and utilized one-cylinder engines. The Reliance Motor Car Company (another independent manufacturer) was also purchased that same year by GM. Rapid and Reliance were merged in 1911, and, in 1912, the marque GMC Truck first appeared on vehicles exhibited at the New York International Auto Show.

Although 22,000 trucks were produced that year, GMC’s contribution to that total was a mere 372 units.

GMC had some currency within GM referring to the corporate parent in general.

Later, GMC would become distinct as a division brand within the corporation, branding trucks and coaches; in contrast, the abbreviation for the overall corporation eventually ended up as GM. GMC maintained three manufacturing locations in

Pontiac, Michigan, Oakland, California and St. Louis, Missouri. During the Second World War, GMC Truck produced 600,000 trucks for use by the United States Armed Forces.

In 1915, McLaughlin acquired the Chevrolet Car Company of Canada, which built Chevrolets in Oshawa with Chevrolet motors and McLaughlin bodies. In 1918, he merged his company with it under the name General Motors of Canada Limited prior to his becoming director and vice-president of General Motors on the approval of Durant, who was then president of General Motors and owner of the Chevrolet Motor Co. In 1925, GM purchased a controlling interest in Yellow Coach, a bus manufacturer based in Chicago, Illinois which was founded

by John D. Hertz. After purchasing the remaining portion in 1943, GM renamed it GM Truck and Coach Division. The division manufactured interurban coaches until 1980. Transit bus production ended in May 1987. The Canadian plant (in London, Ontario) produced buses from 1962

until July 1987. GM withdrew from the bus and coach market because of increased competition. In 1998, GMC’s official branding on vehicles was shortened from GMC Truck to simply GMC. Starting in 1920, GMC and Chevrolet trucks are virtually identical except for the grilles and nameplates, though their differences have varied over the years.

From 1955 through 1959, small (less than two-ton) GMC trucks with gasoline V8s were equipped with Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile V8s (the Canadian trucks used Chevrolet engines).

GMC had its own line of inline six-cylinder engines, known as Jimmy’s from 1939 to 1959, and their own V6 from 1960 to 1974 (also a V8, V12). Chevrolet trucks were marketed towards private ownership, while GMC was focused towards commercial uses and, in some cases, built for heavy usage.

Between 1962 and 1972, most GMC vehicles were equipped with quad headlights, while their Chevrolet clones were equipped with dual headlights.

In 1971, GMC marketed their version of the Chevrolet El Camino, which was based on the Chevrolet Chevelle. Called Sprint, it was virtually identical to the El Camino, and a sport version, the SP, was equivalent to the El Camino SS. In 1973, with GM’s introduction of the new rounded line series trucks, GMC and Chevrolet trucks became even more similar, ending production of GMC’s quad headlight models, and setting the standard for the Chevrolet/GMC line of trucks for over 30 years.

Today, only Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac XTS are made in Canada.

Glycol leak no cause for concern

On April 10, it was discovered that Glycol (a chemical used in the heating system for the building) had leaked into the sanitary sewer system of the Recreation Centre.

However, the City indicated there is no risk to the public.

The spill was contained to the sanitary sewer sys-

tem (within the Waste Water Treatment Lagoons) and was not released to the environment; there was no risk to the public, or to the Battle River water shed.

City staff treated the diluted Glycol with the recommended treatment process involving aeration within the

sanitary sewer system. Monitoring will continue to ensure that any chemical hazard has been fully mitigated.

This incident has been reported to Alberta Environment and no further reporting has been requested at this time. The root cause of the incident is being investi-

gated by City staff.

The City will continue to provide updates on their website as soon as the information comes in.

Reggae and roots songstress Auresia promotes latest album Raices during her spring concerts.

The former Albertan makes her home in Montreal and will be appearing on the Bailey Theatre stage on April 21 at 8 p.m. She will be oping for Flo, also a reggae performer.

“I fell in love with reggae when I went to a festival in California. I stumbled upon it and had a free ticket. I wasn’t planning on going all weekend, but I fell in love with the music and it captivated my soul.”

Auresia has been performing and charming audiences since her debut self-titled release in 2008.

Effortlessly blending the soul of reggae with various rooted sounds from around the world, Auresia has a penchant for delivering unexpected genre-bending tracks.

Auresia returns west to spread reggae music “This album is more worldly and I want to tour in broader places to take the music outside of Canada to share with the world.

My first album was more roots, the second more pop and this one is more reggae. I’m moving in a more worldly area of music and adding various types to my style.”

Bringing forward the sounds of traditional acoustic instruments from Cuba and her native Ukraine, her album is fully comprised of organic instrumentation, impressively blending roots-

reggae and Afro-Cuban rhythms with folk-pop lyrics and melodies paired by Auresia’s sweet-as-honey voice.

Karen Knievel Karen is survived by her husband of 55 years, Gerald; her children Joe Knievel (Marcy Newby), Doug Knievel, Bernie (Marilyn), Patty (Allan) Perreault, Mike Knievel, Kelly (Tracy) Knievel, Regina Knievel, Alan Knievel and Rick Knievel (Jenn Best); grandchildren Albert Perreault (Lacy Fidler), Shawn Knievel (Amanda Trimble), Matthew Perreault, Katie Perreault (Julien Prives), Carmen Knievel (Jacob Romaniuk), Branden Knievel, Chelsea Knievel, Ashley Mallett, Kirsten Knievel, Lexie Knievel, Riley Knievel, Jax Knievel and Danica Knievel; her siblings Don (Dorothy) Crough, Pat (Sue) Crough, MaryLou (Ray) Rouault and Rose Rita Crough; her in-laws Ann (Garf) Lindsey, Don (Angela) Knievel, Leo Knievel, Bob (Carol) Knievel, Ken (Barb) Knievel and Carol Knievel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Joe and Annah Crough; in-laws Tony and Ena Knievel, Francis (Annette) Knievel, George (Phylis) Knievel, Mary Bates, Sylvester Knievel and Jan Knievel; siblings Wilf (Anne) Crough, Paul Crough and Emmett Crough; and one grandchild Kyle Knievel.

Karen was born in Drumheller, AB. Her parents homesteaded in the Rockyford area. They moved to Edmonton in 1948 and lived behind Clark Park.

She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1957. She then attended Lindsey Thurber in Red Deer for one semester to upgrade.

Karen also attended the University of Alberta for one year for her teaching certificate.

Karen’s first job was at Pontmain School in Trochu, AB in 1959, where she taught grades four to six. She met Gerald soon after.

They were married on July 8, 1961 in the big church in St. Albert, AB. They lived in a little house behind the Knievel family farm in Trochu, AB. They moved to Killam in the spring of 1964 where they waited for their house to arrive in the fall of 1964. Karen worked on and off until Rick started grade two. Then she worked in Sedgewick, teaching grade two and special education.

Gerald and Karen farmed until 1976 and lived on the farm until they built a house in Killam in July 1993. They moved to Camrose the year Karen retired in 2003, and then moved to Wetaskiwin in April 2016.

A vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2017 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Camrose.

A memorial Mass was held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2017 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Camrose.

Cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place in the Killam Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Hedwig “Hattie” Patzer April 19, 1924 ~ April 10, 2017 Hedwig (“Hattie”) Bussler was born on April 19, 1924 in Retunka, Poland to Julius and Helene Bussler. They immigrated to Germany in 1940. Hedwig and her family went through many difficult times during the Second World War which lasted from September 21, 1939 until May 8, 1945.

Hedwig and Hermann Patzer formed a friendship and were engaged to be married, but their ways were parted by his service in the army. He was captured and placed in a Russian prisoner of war camp. They neither saw nor heard from each other for seven years.

When he was finally released from prison in 1949, he found out that Hedwig was also still alive and so, in less than one year, they happily got married.

They moved to Canada one year later where they both found jobs in Biggar, Saskatchewan. After hearing about sunny Alberta, they soon moved to Camrose and enjoyed living there to the ends of their lives. Both had many friends in and out of their church community. Hedwig, while living in Biggar, worked in the hospital laundry department, then at a dry-cleaning business, and as a seamstress. She never said “no” to helping other people. For many years, together with her husband, they cared for many less fortunate children in their home. Officially, they fostered over twenty children. She often was asked, “Why are you doing that?”

Her answer was, “We learn from each other, and God is blessing us and the children.” Hedwig accepted Christ as her Saviour in her teen years and was baptized together with her husband in Camrose in the early ’60s.

Hedwig is survived by her daughter Ruth (Chuck) Wagner; grandchildren Sarah (Danny) Johnson, Aaron and Rebecca; great-grandchildren Danny III and Lucas; as well as a host of adopted family and friends in Canada and Germany.

She is predeceased by her husband Hermann.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 from Camrose Church of God with Pastor Brian Krushel officiating. Interment will take place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Camrose Church of God – Nursery or to the Camrose Association for Community Living.

Rose “Rosie” Marie McNernie

Bernard Neufeld March 13, 1927 ~ April 8, 2017 Bernard “Bernie” Neufeld of Camrose was born to Bernard and Annie Neufeld of Roland, MB on March 13, 1927. Bernie was the second eldest of eight children. He passed away on April 8, 2017, at the age of 90 years.

Bernie married Loretta Remple on October 5, 1951 to whom four children were born.

At an early age, Bernie left home and worked at various jobs throughout Canada including the NWT. The north was very special to him with its endless adventures. He retired in the Alliance area and moved to Camrose in 2004.

Bernie is survived by his children Rockton (Wanda) of Sherwood Park, Shannon (Remi) Chalifoux of Edson, Raymond (Diane) of Heisler and Shirley Domatas (Nick) of Edmonton; his loving companion and friend of 22 years, Rose Barnes; numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren; sisters Kay Austinson of Kenora, ON, Anne Bergen of Morden, MB, Irene Sawatzky (Wally) of Edson and Grace Jorgenson of Kenora.

Bernie will be forever missed and forever loved. He is lovingly remembered as a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother and friend to many.

There will be no funeral service as requested by Bernie.

September, 30, 1945 ~ April 11, 2017 Rose Marie McNernie, “Rosie”, was called home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

Rose Marie McNernie was born on September 30, 1945 to Anthony and Eva Usselman in Saskatoon, SK. Rosie was raised in and around Allan, SK. She was the only daughter of three children. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and enjoyed her time on the farm, tending to her kittens and helping her mom with chores.

Rosie married and settled in Bradwell, SK where she raised her most treasured gifts – her son Randy and daughter Laneise. She could not be more proud of both of her children.

Rosie was gifted with so many talents – music, gardening, dancing, cooking, baking and sewing. She loved the outdoors, particularly wildlife. She loved to see deer out in the field and would sit and watch birds perch on her birdhouses just outside her bay window. She often would share that she wished she could fly.

Although Rosie’s illness progressed very aggressively, her trust and unwavering faith in God shone throughout this time.

Although many prayers were prayed for healing, God’s plan was to call her home in the early morning hours of April 11, 2017, with her daughter by her side. Her courageous spirit through this short journey was an inspiration to so many.

Rosie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children Randy (Monica) McNernie and Laneise (Troy) Atema; along with her six grandchildren Leighton, Kessler, Max, Hunter, Jet and Ewan.

She was predeceased by her parents Anthony and Eva Usselman; and her brother Andrew.

The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Valerie Smith, Mrs. Sandy Schoenknecht and all the caregivers at Sunrise Village. Your hard work, loving support and kind words spoken to Rosie were not unnoticed and will never be forgotten. To Pastor Bill Harder and all those involved at Burgar Funeral Home, we thank you for your kindness and gentle approach to guide us through this process. To all our family and friends, thank you for all your prayers and kind words, my mom would be so thankful that you are there for us.

Farmers’ Market is a treasure within Camrose

Every Thursday afternoon and early evening, the Rose City Farmers’ Market allows citizens an opportunity to purchase home-grown and handmade products without leaving the City.

The market has been operating for nearly 13 years at Duggan Mall, with current hours from 1 to 6 p.m. and between 32 and 38 vendors.

“We wanted to operate a market on Thursday because they still had latenight shopping. We started with 10 to 12 members,” said Lori Blades, advertising coordinator for the market.

“We have a public market along with the farmers’ market. That is where we are unique. We have a lot of home-based businesses, so we couldn’t be a true farmers’ market. We are allowed an 80-20 split between bake, make and grow it, and commercial.”

The Thursday market had to create a sub-market to accommodate those who didn’t fit into the solely farmers’ market. “When you come on Thursdays,

you get both a farmers’ market and home-based market. It creates a onestop shopping experience,” added Lori.

“It has helped us a lot because we don’t have to turn anybody away. Those businesses draw a lot of people to the market as well,” said Judy Schlosser, president of the market for the past three years.

“Holding the market on a weekday creates a convenience for the working people to stop in and pick something up during the day when we are open,” explained Lori.

“We are also here for those visiting the Smith Clinic for appointments.

“It also works really well before a long weekend, or in the summer, because people can do their shopping beforehand. They don’t have to worry about if they are going to be there on Saturday morning,” shared Judy.

“When we started, it was a 5 to 9 p.m. market.

Then we moved it up to 4 to 8 p.m. then 3 to 7 p.m. and now we are where we want to be,” recalled Lori.

“We are a market family and everyone here is supportive of each other.

The venders are very happy and friendly. The competition isn’t dog eat dog, we tend to help each other out. If we are sold out of something, we refer them to another vendor,” added Lori.

The third market, the downtown Thursday market in Camrose, did take away vendors and customers, but the Rose City Farmers’ Market had the advantage of picking up summer visitors because of their location and easy access from 48th Avenue.

“Camrose isn’t big enough for that many markets. We try to come up with new ideas. We have to worry about us and not other markets,” said Judy.

“In May, we will be rolling out an incentive plan to reward our regular customers. Not just an incentive, but an appreciation of our customers,” Lori said.

The Rose City Farmers’ Market offers a good variety of items every Thursday.

Lori Blades of Kay’s Krafts and Baking is known for her dandelion jelly at the Thursday market. She also makes silk flowers for various occasions.

Not one to sing his own praises, Kambeitz did say he was especially proud of the work the organization has done staying current with technology and the tools required to successfully complete the job.

“We have made a priority in our strategic plan during the whole time I was chief to invest in the best and that is to invest in our own people.

“We have spent more money and time on training for all of our people for the right reasons to prepare them mentally for the job.

I think that will be critical in the future of policing to have those individuals mentally prepared for what they are going to see, do and be accountable for throughout their careers with support groups within our organization and professional training that takes place with all those young people.”

It is apparent that Kambeitz is a strong advocate of ensuring young recruits are given the tools needed to survive in a very challenging, sometimes overwhelming, career.

“Something else I am

very proud of is where our organization is today.

We are at our authorized strength for the first time in years for police officers.

We have a very stable and experienced number of police officers who are on board, all somewhat young in service, but very capable of doing the public safety component for Camrose.”

Kambeitz commented, “We have some great people who make some tough decisions every day where they can take somebody’s liberties away and be absolutely accountable for that and have to justify every step.

“I believe our organization couldn’t be in better shape to hand it over and I am very proud of that.”

“I think our world is getting more hectic,” smiled Kambeitz, “Or maybe I am just slowing down.

“You really have to have high energy. I have to be hyper vigilant 24 hours a day.

“At some point, you have to decide it is time for someone else to take over that leadership and I feel very privileged I was allowed to retire on my own terms.

“Fay and I are going to

disappear for a little while and we plan on doing a little traveling. But we will always stay in Camrose.

Two of our sons and their families are here (one son lives in Lethbridge) and Camrose is home.

With five grandchildren, there will be no shortage of things to do for Darrell and Fay. “I am not looking for other employment,” he said with a warm smile.

“Finally, I will be able to be part of that wonderful volunteer sector in Camrose that I just didn’t have time for before because of the demands of this position.”

No matter what Chief Kambeitz decides to do in the years ahead, one thing is for sure, his sense of community both in and out of the police service, his professional demeanor and his warm smile will always remain in the minds of Camrose residents.
