This summer, Camrose and District Centennial Museum opens with new artifacts and two new staff members. We captured Dariya Veenstra enjoying a vintage wheelbarrow ride to her new position, courtesy of returning museum assistant Kayden Prevost.

A visit to the local museum is a terrific way to take a trip back in time and celebrate our community’s interesting history. • Greta Murat of Alberta Agricultural Development Corporation was declared the winner of The Camrose Booster Flaming Fingers typing contest, held at Duggan Mall. Her speed (with accuracy) was 79.4 words per minute.

• Norsemen Inn held a spring fashion show (the latest in leisure wear and swimwear) in Tom Katz tavern.

50 Years Ago This Week – May 9, 1967

Police review video surveillance April 28

A west-end business reported a theft from their business. Video surveillance is being reviewed and the Camrose Police Service is investigating.

A male driver was arrested on two outstanding warrants from Banff.

He was later released on a promise to appear with a new court date.

A 69-year-old female who had been causing a disturbance at a downtown business was issued a trespass notice.

A concerned citizen observed a small child walking by himself. Police located the child and determined that he had exited his residence on his own without his grandmother’s knowledge.

April 27

Police received a report of a theft of fuel from a business downtown. Fuel had been siphoned from one of their company vehicles. A vehicle stop was conducted resulting in the driver being charged with driving while suspended. His vehicle was also towed from the scene.

• Playing at Kar-Vue Drive-In Theatre was Kaleidoscope, starring Warren Beatty, Susanne York and Clive Revill. Also The Ten Commandments, starring Charlton Hesston and Yul Brynner.

• Fisher’s Ladies’ Wear Ltd. advertised refrigerated fur storage plus insurance on fur coats.

• Merit Stores, on main street, announced the opening of their garden centre.

Camrose Fire Department honours fallen firefighters

By Lori Larsen On May 4 at 12 hundred hours members of the Camrose Fire Department stood in formation honouring their fallen comrades during a Sounding Off ceremony.

In Camrose, as well as across the province, nation and world, firefighters who have lost their lives were honoured with prayers, messages and the official ringing of the bell. One ring to signify the call to duty and three rings signifying end of duty.

In Camrose the seven member Honour Guard, including the Sergeant at Arms, all wearing navy blue tunics donned with red piping, dickies and belt, white gloves and spit polished parade boots proudly marched into the fire station and took their post behind Fire Chief Peter Krich, Deputy Fire Chief Joe Mah and Sergeant at Arms Len Chartrand at the podium. Falling in behind the Honour Guard were other volunteer members of the Camrose Fire Department.

While somewhat solemn the ceremony was a reminder of the sacrifices these men and women make every day to ensure the safety of their communities.

The Camrose Fire Department Honour Guard is deeply rooted in tradition and is available to commemorate any community events.

By Lori Larsen Every year at this time a team of eager city employees don safety vests and boots and dot our city parks, greenspaces and golf course to keep our City looking and running smooth.

This year the City of Camrose welcomes 37 sea-

sonal employees to join the 10 full time employees in the Parks Department and 11 seasonal with 3 permanent employees at the golf course.

Residents will see the employees conducting various duties throughout the city including various landscaping, gardening, cem-

etery maintenance, and Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Coordinator hosting environmental programs for all ages.

As you drive around admiring the beautiful state of our city be sure to use extra caution when passing city vehicles and employees.

City of Camrose hosts week long clean up

By Lori Larsen The City of Camrose is hosting a week long initiative from May 15 to 19 to clean up the City and encourages residents to play a part in continuing to make Camrose a beautiful city for everyone.

The city welcomes any organizations, groups or families that want to assist in the cleanup and support the program by supplying the bags and gloves.

“The City will be providing bags and gloves that can be picked up a City Hall, Public Works or the Community Services Department,” said City of Camrose Parks Director Chris Clarkson.

“We ask that anyone participating register with us so we (City staff) know where to come and pick up the filled trash bags” The City requests that only regular trash, capable of fitting into the bags, be collected and left for pickup.

For residents who have begun their spring cleaning, the City of Camrose will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Roundup held at the Public Works Yard, 4202 - 51 Avenue on June 16 and 17. For a list of accepted hazardous materials visit www.camrose.com/203/Household-Hazardous-Waste-Information.

Recycling can be done at Centra Cam Collection Depot located at 4402 - 51 Avenue. Centra Cam is open for most drop-off’s 24 hours per day. For more information, call 780679-4196.

REFLECTIONS

Slept later than usual one morning a few days ago and smiled to see sunshine pouring through the window. Sunshine and blue sky–instant cheerfulness and instant gratitude.

And that made me think of some old truths that feel new because I was newly reminded of them.

For the past week, I’ve been away from my usual locations and activities, with no access to social media or email. Did it make a difference? Oh yes. Here are three things I especially noticed.

I noticed that I noticed more. I noticed the tastes and textures of food. I noticed beauty wherever I looked. I noticed acts of kindness and generosity. I noticed quirky humour and more things that made me smile or laugh. I noticed how easy it was to feel gratitude and affection.

This isn’t a new idea. The concept of “mindfulness”– of paying attention–has been around for centuries. Without the cues of usual surroundings and usual routine, it was easier–automatic, in fact–to notice each moment with all my senses, and to appreciate more. Without email, social media, radio or TV, it was easier to pay attention to where I was and whoever else was there.

Takeaway: I don’t have to be “away” to pay attention. I can set the intention to notice with all my senses in my regular surroundings.

Action: remind myself to stop and notice sight, sound, touch, taste, smell. Take intentional breaks from being lost in electronic worlds and look around at right here, right now. Follow the old adage: be here now, physically, mentally and emotionally.

I noticed the power of simply being present. I was privileged to be present when some courageous individuals told of challenging, painful experiences. They had been asked to do so, and they were not complaining or asking for sympathy. They were simply speaking their experience. I was privileged to see, hear and feel how powerful it was to have others simply listen and be present. Nobody gave advice. Nobody said, “I had a similar experience.” Nobody offered, “Here’s something that might help.” Nobody said or did anything except be with the person with acceptance and acknowledgement.

Takeaway: As I have before, I marvelled at how empowering it is to have others simply listen and be present with acceptance.

Action: Keep reminding myself that, when someone chooses to share with me something of great importance to them, my greatest gift is not my expertise or similar experience, but the willingness simply to be present with them. If they want my advice, they’ll ask. If they don’t ask, don’t offer.

(Uninvited words can actually diminish the person’s feeling of being supported. I’m not altogether comfortable with noticing how hard I’ve found it to resist trying to “help” with words, which are really about my ego trying to make a difference rather than what is really helpful to the other person.)

I noticed that “appreciation” is its own reward. I revisited a realization that I’ve had before. The idea that “When _ happens, I’ll be happy,” or “When I have _, I’ll be happy,” is backwards. First, find something to appreciate. Then other good things emerge.

This too is an old concept. Hundreds of writers, philosophers and teachers, along with friends, colleagues and clients understand this. I noticed it more deeply when away from my usual locations and activities.

Takeaway: This is not about denying unpleasant realities or abdicating responsibilities. It is about recognizing that, no matter how dark, there is always something to appreciate. That recognition taps into the resilience to deal with whatever must be handled.

Action: Revisit various “gratitude” practices that have served me well in the past.

Urging students

MLA Bruce Hinkley’s article advises junior and high school students to apply for “membership” on Minister Eggen’s Student Council, prior to May 5, to ensure a “direct line to the minister of education,” as announced in a public relations moment at Harry Ainlay School (Edmonton Journal; Feb. 27). According to Hinkley, all students need for council “membership” is a “passion for their education, and want[ing] to make a positive impact on education in Alberta.”

Eggen defends his council’s, claiming it will give him “better access to feedback from the people using the education system.” He added, “If I had a captive audience of kids today, I would ask them about school programming, including how relevant they believe the curriculum is, and how

government could improve specific subject areas.”

MLA Hinkley/all Albertans should know this is an annual waste of $105,000 tax dollars because these questions have already been asked. Minister Eggen already has access (at no cost) to the responses to the 56 curricula-related questions/statements from 800 students every year via Alberta Education’s “Stakeholder Satisfaction Surveys.”

Why doesn’t Minister Eggen examine the Survey Summary Report tables and charts? And the ROC Indicators? Bar graphs indicate the percentage (per cent) of (student) agreement on these matters. Why would he need 32 additional student opinions covering the same topics?

Students have already been asked: is “success of the student the highest priority of Alberta’s education system?” Is their “school work” contributing to the development of their ability to use numbers, to communicate, to take responsibility for their own learning or to manage money, credit and personal finances?”

They’ve been asked if their schoolwork is interesting?

Challenging? If they get the “help they need”? Whether they are satisfied with the extent that their input into decisions at school is considered? Are they satisfied with the course/subject variety

offered? The questions have covered the gamut of the relevancy/usefulness of their learnings, how AB Ed could improve that, whether they have considered the “trades as a career option” and if they “feel safe,” or whether “bullying is a serious problem in their schools.”

Mr. Hinkley, please find more essential advice for our students, instead of telling them to join Minister Eggen’s Student Council. Let’s “go for gold” in Alberta education!

I am writing this letter because I feel the operators of the Kingman Transfer Site deserve recognition on how clean they keep the site.

With a chain link fence surrounding it and open garbage bins, when a wind comes up, lots of paper flies out catching against the fence.

Our operators (or “our girls” as I fondly call them) diligently pick up all those stragglers.

I’ve realized over the years that it’s not an easy job to keep the site clean and yet it always looks the best it can be, and I appreciate it.

So here’s to our girls, who obviously consider it Earth Day every day! Way to go.

Just because it’s a dump site, doesn’t mean it has to look like a dump.

Hosting 2019 Alberta Senior Games denied

On April 3 during Committee of whole meeting, Mayor Norman Mayer presented council with a letter written to the City of Camrose from the Minister of Culture and Tourism Ricardo Miranda inviting Camrose to submit a bid to host the 2019 Alberta Senior Masters Games (formerly the 55 Plus Games.)

In the letter, Miranda pointed out that the successful host community will be given the opportunity to showcase its talents to participants from all regions of the province, as well as to attract numerous prospectors and special guests.

“Generally speaking, the Seniors’ Games are a little easier to coordinate,” said City of Camrose Community Services general manager Ryan Poole. “You don’t have to find as much lodging because adults tend to come with their own lodging or stay in hotels.

It would mean a little less sponsorship and a little less cost to run, but it still requires a fair bit of coordination and community involvement.”

Poole suggested if Camrose were to put in a bid for hosting the games and subsequently be successful, finding a community group willing to spearhead the event, with the City support, would be the best avenue to pursue, adding hosting the games would attract attention to Camrose along with the economic boost that comes with athletes and guests staying in Camrose.

Councillor Agnes Hoveland inquired to the cost of hosting the event and if there were any groups in mind that would be willing to take charge.

“With my experience in talking to others involved with the Seniors’ Games, it is usually some sort of Seniors’ Society and we have them in Camrose,” replied Poole.

“But the City, in any case, usually has to play a pretty strong role because these community groups usually don’t know a lot of the ins and outs of grants and coordinating volunteers.”

As for the projected cost, Poole speculated that it could be quite a bit less than that of the Summer or Winter Games, which could cost a community close to $1,000,000.

Mayor Norm Mayer recommended administration seek information from previous hosts of the Seniors’ Game as to the more specific costs.

Poole brought up the concern that the renovations to the pool may not be completed in time for the Games but that the possibility of partnering with Wetaskiwin may be a way to accommodate the water activities.

Councillor David Ofrim added that there are provincial bodies that assist in orchestrating such events.

Mayor Mayer requested administration look into it further then return to Council with more detailed information regarding finances, at which time Council would discuss it further.

During the regular council meeting on April 17, Council voted not to partake in hosting the Seniors’ Games. Council made the decision based on a recom-

mendation put forth by City of Camrose Community Services General Manager Ryan Poole citing a representative from Alberta Sport who stated community hosts for this event in the recent past had a budget of $800,000 to $1,000,000.

Council agreed the cost was too high to be considered at this time.

Ole Uffda holding annual Spring Run-off on Saturday

Runners who have been training indoors all winter are finally preparing to enter the annual Ole’s Spring Runoff starting at 10 a.m. on May 13.

Everyone is encouraged to enter the run which includes all ages. Adults can choose from three- and eight-

kilometre distances. A Kids’ Fun Run is only one km and begins at 11 a.m.

“This is a nice family event where everyone can participate in the various lengths. The proceeds from the race will go towards the Camrose Public Library,” said Robert Renman, one of the organizers. “We are hop-

ing to get a lot of people out and it is a fun course. It’s a fun place to run because you don’t have to worry about traffic.”

Located in the beautiful City of Camrose, the route takes you through a scenic run or walk into the valley using the trail system.

“We would like to hit the

200-runner mark this year,” he said. “This run is a good way to get in shape and get motivated to run in other events. It is a fun way to exercise.”

The run starts at Stoney Creek Centre, east on 39 Avenue toward the ski hill.

The eight-kilometre course has one somewhat

challenging hill, which comes at about 4.5 kilometres into the race. The threekilometre race has no hills and is a very flat course.

Children receive a Camrose Running Club shirt and a special medal.

Foster celebrates Canada 150 with national music

Calgary based singer and songwriter Stan Foster will be honouring Canada’s 150th birthday with a concert featuring the top music from Canadians through songs of some of Canada’s favorite musical artists.

This program on May 26 at the Camrose Resort Casino includes stunning visuals, stories and memorable songs that make Canada proud.

Foster always brings his warm baritone voice, piano and guitar skills to the stage

in an exciting performance package. His last show in Camrose was sold out.

In his 40 years entertaining, he has shared the stage with Kenny Rogers, B.J. Thomas, Gene Pitney, Tommy James and Gary Lewis.

His songwriting has awarded him national television appearances, a Nashville award, anthem projects and associations with organizations such as the CFL, Special Olympics, Easter Seals, The Safe Haven Foundation, and Children’s Wish Foundation.

Although classically trained as a pianist and composer, he made his name in popular music. His first major credit was as musical director for the Merry Macks, a smooth harmony and novelty group associated with Decca Records in America, who not only made their share of recordings, but also appeared in the Bob Hope/ Bing Crosby Road movies and played a prominent role (in tandem with a young Ella Fitzgerald) in Ride ‘Em Cowboy, one of the best of Abbott and Costello’s feature films.

Following his association with the Merry Macks, Foster went to work in England for the British Broadcasting Corporation, as the leader, arranger and pianist of Cyril Stapleton’s BBC Show Band.

By sheer chance, through a 1954 radio broadcast that paired the band with pop singer Alma Cogan, Foster met the up-and-coming British pop music star who, at the time, needed a replacement for her pianist, Joe Henderson, who had left her employ to go to work for Petula Clark.

Since then, Foster has been tributing some of the greatest artists in North America.

His Camrose show will include songs from Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Anka, Bryan Adams and The Guess Who.

Learning lessons through giving

Amidst the lessons in math, science, English, social studies, art, music and so on, students are also being taught invaluable lessons on the power of caring and giving back.

Our Lady Mount Pleasant Leadership Class students know this lesson all too well and many develop it more as a life choice than a class credit.

Aryanna Schiebelbein, a Grade 11 student at OLMP, quickly realized the true impact that giving of her time has when she began volunteering in various activities through the OLMP Leadership Club.

“I joined in Grade 10 and, since then, I have completed a lot of volunteer projects and have led some as well.”

The Club has taken trips to the Mustard Seed in Edmonton, a not-forprofit organization that responds to the needs of the inner city’s less fortunate with shelter, food, clothing and, most importantly, acceptance of people experiencing poverty.

“This year, I lead the trip. I also hosted a Wakea-thon fundraiser that raised a record amount of money, about $2,000,” said Aryanna.

“We have also gone

“Every Monday, I volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital for about two hours,” said Aryanna. “I got into this (hospital volunteering) a couple months ago. Basically, what I do is read to patients or just talk to them. It can get pretty boring and lonely (for patients).”

But Aryanna’s graciousness doesn’t stop there as she takes it upon herself to bring in treats to the patients at special times of the year, such as Christmas.

“The patients here will always say how grateful they are that someone will just come and talk to them because a lot of times there is no one to do that for them.”

Her desire to volunteer came naturally from her parents, but flourished as a result of joining the OLMP Leadership Club.

“Every time we have gone to the Mustard Seed, we have done it more than once, after the meal is served, we go around and sit with people and just have conversations.

“That is really nice because some people may have stigma around the homeless and, it may sound cliche, but these people have just had a tough time in their lives. It opens your eyes to how this can happen to anyone.

“You realize how just talking to these people really does make their day.

And I think it makes you

deal with people in a much kinder way.

“If you are on the street, you are more inclined to have a conversation with someone.”

OLMP Leadership Club went on a mission trip to California in 2015 and helped at a soup kitchen and rehabilitation centre for men on Skid Row. “There was one man in particular who was helping out in the soup kitchen, but was also in the rehab and we made a connection by talking about the differences in American and Canadian culture. But then we started getting into deeper conversations about how he got to where he is.

“These people have a lot of good life advice to give and it is important to understand that they are not necessarily bad people. These circumstances could happen to anyone.” It is an astute observation coming from a 16 year old.

The Leadership Club members also help out with school dances, planning activities, charity fashion shows and the Camrose Habitat for Humanity Build.

“You don’t have to do something super crazy or super important,” said Aryanna, when speaking on the importance of volunteering. “Just your presence and time is important to a lot of these people.

“For me, in Camrose, I didn’t think there were many areas in which a person could volunteer, but there are tons of places that people can volunteer such as the hospital, The Open Door, the Camrose Women’s Shelter – places like that.

“I know 100 per cent that I will continue volunteering throughout my life because it is nice helping people, but also, if I was in a tough situation, I would want people to volunteer to help me.

“The need is there and volunteering will make you feel good and teach you great life lessons. It opens your eyes to new things.”

Aryanna, in her own way and beyond her dedication to making other people’s lives more joyous, has taught us all a life lesson. Giving knows no boundaries, be it age, gender, ethnicity, background or otherwise.

Flying our flag for a good cause

Less unemployment across Alberta

It has been great news that the provincial unemployment rate has decreased and some 20,000 new, full-time jobs have been created in Alberta. Another interesting statistic from Alberta Economic Development and Trade is that in February 2017 we saw that Alberta manufacturing sales totaled $5.7 billion, which is a 16.4 per cent increase compared to February 2016. Financial analysts continue to make positive economic growth predictions for our province.

Congratulations to Rochelle Johannson, the former executive director of the Camrose Open Door for being awarded a grant from the Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund for their project “Rural Roadmap for Human Rights.” This award recognizes that all Albertans can participate in the cultural, social, economic and political life of the province without discrimination.

This initiative is an example of how our government can work together with communities to foster equality and increase the quality of life for Albertans.

I was very proud of the Member’s Statement given

by MLA David Sheppard (Edmonton Centre) who spoke about the fact that in two years we have already fulfilled 73 per cent of our 2015 election platform with another 15 per cent in process. Some of the promises made and promises kept include: a royalty review with six months with implementation in a year leading to a 50 per cent increase in rig activity; increasing the minimum wage to $15/hour by 2018; working to diversify our economy; banning corporate and union donations to political parties; extending sunshine lists to agencies, boards and commissions; reversing cuts to health care, education and children’s support services; providing stable, predictable funding for health services, school boards, postsecondaries and municipalities; repairing hospitals and senior’s facilities and constructing the new ones needed across Alberta; eliminating fee increases proposed by the third party including a regressive health care levy; returning Alberta to a reasonable, progressive tax system; funding schools for enrolment and building new ones where they are needed; freezing tuitions; restoring the Summer Temporary Employment Program; reducing school fees for essential services and transportation; phasing in targeted school lunch programs for elementary students; investing in child care capped at $25/day; increasing funding for Family and Community Support Services; improving the Alberta Family Employment Tax Credit and introducing the Alberta Child Benefit; creating a Ministry for the Status of Women; reviewing employment standards to support more family-friendly workplaces; creating more spaces in women’s shelters; leading on climate change by crafting solutions with stakeholders, other provinces and the federal government; phasing out coal-fired electricity; establishing an energy efficiency strategy and green retrofit programs; protecting the Castle Wildlife Area; repealing the Aboriginal Consultation Levy Act; working with federal and Indigenous governments to resolve land claims; ensuring Indigenous communities have access to clean and safe drinking water; improving representation of Indigenous culture and history in our school curriculum.

Keeping our promises is our commitment to making life better for Albertans. It was disappointing that we saw both the Wildrose Party and Conservatives vote against the budget and the economic proposals for our constituency. For instance, over $658,000 was approved for our seniors’ lodges’ maintenance but the WRP and PC voted against that. Millet received grants for over a million dollars for sidewalks, wastewater works, and bridge upgrades, but the Opposition parties voted against this.

Bittern Lake was approved for $200,000 for upgrades, that too was voted against. The City of Camrose was approved for capital projects for close to $9 million and WRP and PC voted against this. Camrose County of Camrose (east of our constituency) will receive over $13 million for Dried Meat Lake (widen bridge), New Norway (water distribution upgrade), Armena (waterline extension) and several township road reconstruction and the MLA for Wainwright voted against these.

They also voted against the $25/daycare for Kids Campus in Camrose. I am proud of the accomplishments we have made after just two years.

The Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak Flag Project fundraiser event is back again and the club is inviting residents to be part of giving back while flying the Canadian colours.

For a pre-set donation to the Daybreak Rotary Club you can proudly fly the Canadian Flag during Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day weekends.

“We (Rotary members) will come and put a Canadian flag on your front lawn for the three weekends,” said Rotary Daybreak member Carol Davies-Pedersen.

“We will bring it, put it up and then come and take it away.”

The Club supplies a full-sized Canadian flag attached to an eight-foot

pole with a metal sleeve and spike on the bottom that is inserted into the lawn.

“It looks pretty darn festive when an entire close (or area) has flags on the front yards,” said DaviesPedersen.

In 2016, the Flag Project raised $8,000 with a total of 200 flags. This year the club has purchased 50 more flags and hopes for another sellout.

“We also put 20 complimentary flags on 50 Street for Victoria Day, Canada Day and the Big Valley Parade,” said Davies-Pedersen.

The event is not only a great way for residents to show their pride in Canada, especially so during Canada 150 Celebration, but it is a wonderful way to give

to the Rotary Daybreak, an organization that provides community, national and international humanitarian services.

“One of the other things we really enjoy about this project is the social aspect,” added Davies-Petersen.

“When we go to put out the flags, we have so many throughout the City that we divide it up geographically.

Then, pairs of Rotarians spend about an hour going out. It is a good mixer for Rotary members.”

The Flag Project provides goodwill, good friendship and good patriotism.

It may be hard to imagine, but there are girls and women in our world who go without everyday personal hygiene products and associated education.

Thanks to the generosity of many volunteers throughout the world including Camrose, Days For Girls organization is making great strides in ensuring that these girls and women are receiving the assistance they need.

“Days For Girls is an ongoing program of the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak,” said club member Carol Davies-Pedersen.

“Since we began the program in the fall of 2014, we have completed 925 kits, 525 this year alone.”

The kits consist of a sewn drawstring bag that contains a travel-size soap, two pairs of underwear, one washcloth, eight absorbent tri-fold pads, two one-gallon size Ziploc freezer bags, two moisture-barrier shields and a visual instruction sheet.

Camrose Rotary Daybreak will be celebrating the 1,000th kit during a kit assembly event and hopes to reach a goal of 1,200 bags.

“We completed 200 the first year, 400 the second year and, so far this year, 525,” said Davies-Pedersen.

Volunteers from the community have assisted in, not only sewing the bags, but assembling the kits as well. “It is very gratifying,” remarked Davies-Pedersen.

“The Tofield Quilt Guild has done one day a year where they all come together and sew kits. The Wainwright Red Hat Society has also been making items.”

All volunteers of any stripe are welcome to give a hand in providing kits to those less fortunate.

Over 640,000 women and girls have been reached by the Days For Girls personal kits, education and training.

The mandate of Days For Girls is recognizing that every girl or woman deserves to feel worthy and dignified and celebrates this by providing sustainable feminine hygiene products and health education and training For more information on the Days For Girls organization visit the website at www.daysforgirls.org.

Residents are encouraged to come out to a barbecue hosted by the Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club to be held in front of the Pet Valu Camrose store from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on May 13.

“This is to raise awareness for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides and Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides dog walk,” said Swans and Roses Lions Club member Lee Kroeger.

The Dog Walk itself will be held on May 28 at Stoney Creek Centre beginning at 10 a.m. and all residents, two-legged and four-legged, are welcome to come out and exercise their heart and heels, all the while donating to a good cause.

All proceeds from the barbecue and the subsequent Dog Walk go towards supporting Canadians who have a medical or physical disability, with dog guides.

“There are six different assistance dogs and this is the biggest and main fundraiser, because the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is run strictly through donation. There is no government money that comes into it,” explained Kroeger.

“If a person were in need of an assistance dog, they would contact the Foundation (in Ontario) and a representative would be sent to the person in need to evaluate what type of assistance dog is required. Then the person is matched with a dog that is specifically selected for their individual needs,” remarked Kroeger.

“I met with a fellow in Lethbridge who was matched with a big chocolate brown poodle. The gentleman is blind and has this poodle because poodles are active and he (the recipient of the dog) is a very fast walker and he also has allergies. So the

Foundation matched him with a poodle. It is quite a procedure.”

The organization trains six types of dog guides used to service a wide expanse of people with disabilities.

The most commonly used breeds include Labrador retrievers, standard and miniature poodles (effective for people with dog allergies), golden retrievers and some smaller breeds.

Mother celebrates every day

Mothers Day is one of the busiest times of year for flower shops and telephone services, because it is the one time of year where we are reminded of the many wonderful things mothers do, not only for their children, but for society in general.

Laurie Fraser, the mother of two very energetic children, seven-yearold Cara and four-year-old Maxwell, wants nothing more for Mother’s Day than to be able to spend a relaxing day enjoying her children. Oh, and maybe have her husband home from his out-of-town job, but that may not be in the cards this year.

But then again, like most every mother, Laurie is grateful for any time she is allowed to spend just being with her children.

Cara and Maxwell both attend Sparling School and in an effort to give back to the school and show her support to her children Laurie herself is an active volunteer at the school.

“I am on the parent’s council and will be taking on the treasurer position at the school next September,” said Laurie.

“I am also the hot lunch lady and provide hot lunches for the students twice a month then every other week we do a popcorn program for fun for the students to fundraise for repairs and new playground equipment.”

In 2009, Laurie first became a mom. “I really

enjoyed my pregnancy the first time around, with the baby shower and all. When Cara came into the world everything stopped. Suddenly my world was all about her.”

Laurie and her husband Samuel, quickly fell in love with their new born daughter. “She has brought so much light into our lives,” remarked Laurie “Then we had Max right after we got married and he kind of threw us for a bit of a loop.

“Cara was such a good baby, in the sense that she slept through the night, she was so easy, she ate all of her vegetables,” smiled Laurie as she described finding out just how different children can be. “Then there is Maxwell; and I remember my mom said to me one day that God is going to give you the child that you deserve.

“I was a good child, but there were times that I was a troublesome toddler and we are going through that now with Max.” But Laurie recognizes that is part in parcel of being a mom, understanding that not every child is the same and parenting means appreciating each individual child’s strengths and obstacles.

“The Golden Rule is that every child is different. My son is very artistic and he communicates in such a way with his affections and my daughter is very social and she likes to make friends all the time.”

Laurie also said that she always tries to keep things positive in the household, which is not always the easiest task considering her husband works away from home.

“It gets difficult sometimes but basically you just have to stay positive.”

On that note Laurie did add that she considers herself so very lucky to have her own mom (Nana Angie) who helps out quite a bit.

“I have had a lot of help from my mom she is basically the reason I am the mom I am today. I know that sounds kind of corny but she really is just fantastic.”

It is quite apparent that Laurie absolutely loves being a mom and her children adore her as they run back and forth during the interview to grab a hug or check in with mom.

Laurie is equally grateful to her own mother for supporting her and teaching her how to be a good mom.

On a final note, Laurie said being a mom has taught her to be patient.

“My children have taught me to stop and take a deep breath and look within myself and don’t parent out of anger.”

A lesson we all could take to heart.

Parfett inducted into drag racing hall of fame

Harold Parfett of Bittern Lake was inducted into the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame in Montreal.

He was one of 23 to enter the Hall of Fame during its second major gala.

“I was there with some big names in driving, so it was humbling. I was more of a builder and helped a lot of other drivers. They put on a great event in Montreal and I was glad to be a part of it,” said Harold.

Back in 1966, Harold attended his first drag race in Edmonton at the age of 15. That is where he met famous race car driver Don Garlits, who told him that if he worked hard, that one day he could own his own race car. That encounter forever changed Harold’s life and inspired his passion for race cars and drag racing.

“He tapped me on the shoulder (I can still remem-

ber the way he did it) and said you can own a car like this one day. I worked hard after that towards my dream. I now have a replica of Don’s car in my garage.”

After studying at technical schools in Edmonton and Calgary, he started a business manufacturing electrical boxes in his garage. After a few years, his business grew into Ace Manufacturing near Bittern Lake.

Then racers began approaching him asking if he could sponsor their race cars.

Unable to afford a race car of his own and seeing the dedication of these racers to win, Harold focused instead on supporting struggling racers by any way he could.

“My funny car and dragster drivers soon were winning trophies and we have some success.”.

By the early 1990s, he became involved with the Powerama car show as the principal sponsor for race car

driver, Levy Dumont. His car won almost every race and was on the cover of several race programs. Shortly after Dumont’s 1991 championship win, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) approached Parfett asking if he would get involved with their Say No to Drugs campaign.

In the following years, Harold remained actively involved with the RCMP and their campaign on street legal programs among young drivers. The program’s aim was to foster a positive image of law enforcement among young drivers while targeting important issues such as the responsible operation of motor vehicles and an awareness of drug and alcohol abuse.

In 1997, he was approached to help build a 1970 Nova race car to participate in the street legal program at the Budweiser race track. Not only was this

the first police race car in Canada, in 1998, the RCMP team was presented with an award by the Chiefs of Police in Edmonton in recognition of their outstanding contribution to traffic safety. Being an avid supporter of this cause, Harold recalls this as an extremely rewarding experience and investment.

“Now the Edmonton City Police have a Blueline program and they have four cars that race on Friday nights. I’m proud to still be involved with that program.”

It was also during this time that he began sponsoring drag racing and helping young drivers succeed. Drag racers he sponsored went on to compete in races at both the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). In 2001, Harold formed Ace Racing with his sons and began racing snowmobiles and funny cars.

In 2003, Harold joined the IBBA Nostalgia funny car club and 37 years after meet-

ing Don Gartlis, he finally owned his own race car.

Each summer Ace puts on a race in Edmonton called the Outlaw 6.99. As of 2014, Team Ace Racing and Ace Racing has sponsored 15 race cars and is a sponsor of the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association (CMDRA), Outlaw 6.99 and Castrol Raceway in Edmonton. Harold has dedicated 30 years to helping racers and plans on continuing this journey for many years to come.

He is proud of his Wally’s trophies, given to the top drivers, and his driver’s safety records back when car racing wasn’t always as safe as they are now.

Inductees were enshrined for having been actively engaged in the top level of their respective drag racing categories for at least 25 years. He received a jacket and a ring for his contribution to the sport.

Harold has had racing in his blood since he first meet Garlits back when he was 15.

Flame of Hope runs with athletes

Camrose Police Service members and Special Olympic athletes will be running side by side in the Flame of Hope event around Mirror Lake on Saturday, May 13.

You are invited to join officers in running with the Flame of Hope along with walking/running Special Olympics athletes, family members, first responders, friends, volunteers and community members. Registration begins at 10 a.m.,

the run starts at 10:30 a.m. and a barbecue will follow.

Special Olympics Camrose has 34 athletes and 11 volunteers attending the provincial Summer Games in Medicine Hat, July 7 to 9.

raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. All donations of $25 or more will receive a tax receipt.

Last year, the tournament raised $18,000 and was the fourth sellout in a row. The proceeds from the tournament assisted 39 youth in staying a total of 3,095 nights and provided 5,042 meals while in the Open House program.

This year, they are hoping for another sellout with a goal of raising $20,000.

Augustana adds on solar power

University of Alberta Augustana Campus has added on to the existing solar power with three new installations of panels – two on top the Forum building and one on the roof of the auditorium of the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre.

The newest installation includes approximately 130 kilowatts of solar energy, bringing the total to approximately 252 kilowatts. All three new arrays, Lougheed Centre and the Forum include a total of 469 PV panels. The existing fly tower has a total of 488 PV panels.

“The initiative is funded through the energy management and sustainable operations office within the University,” said Augustana facilities and operations manager Chris Blades. “The University’s goal is to reduce the amount of energy that we require or we use and, as a result, lower our impact on the environment.

“The University continually looks at efficiencies within our systems (energy, lighting and mechani-

cal). We have, for instance, had lighting retrofits on the entire campus, twice now, as technology gets better.”

In terms of the CO2 avoidance or mitigation from the PV installations, the total for the Lougheed Centre (including the fly tower) is 125 metric tonnes and the installations on the Forum is 60 metric tonnes.

“In simple terms, if you take the fly tower and the new installation together, you would have enough power to cover about 30 to 32 homes over the course of a year,” said Blades. “That is really significant.”

In the Lougheed Centre, 100 per cent above the auditorium is covered with panels and the Forum roof is covered up to approximately 80 per cent.

During one sunny day of observation of the fly tower, Blades noted, “We over produced and, even though the Performing Arts Centre was busy, we were producing enough energy to cover the use of the facility and still put back onto the grid.

“And that is with older technology,” he added.

“Those panels are already obsolete. Every day, we produce power – even cloudy days in the winter.

“Part of the mandate of the University is to reduce greenhouse gases, reducing the University’s environmental footprint. The added benefit of doing all this is to save some money and to avoid some carbon tax.”

In looking ahead, Blades indicated the University will be doing mechanical improvements this summer to reduce energy use and make it more efficient.

“Every inch of this campus, including green space or flat field, has been looked at and this was the most efficient use of the technology,” He said. “This is why they went with this first. Perhaps down the road, when technology gets more efficient, we may be looking at more applications.”

With some of the rebate programs offering more incentives to try out solar energy, more organizations are getting on board. The result: Less impact on our environment.

December 13, 1927 ~ May 4, 2017 Joan leaves this world with a legacy of faith and love through her family: her children Leonard Greenwood and Terumi Sekihara, Dorothy Marshall, Sheila and Ron Hamilton, Irene and Brian Green, and David and Benita Greenwood. She was also very blessed to have 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Joan moved to Camrose in 1963 with her young family. Her husband, Rev. Adrian Greenwood, was the priest at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Joan always loved to sing and, as well as in the church choir, she sang with the Sweet Adelines and Camrose Community Choir. During those years, Joan welcomed Judy into her home. Judy later married Glen Lawes and he and their girls became part of the family. As Joan’s family grew, she began working at Mina’s Jewellery, China & Gifts, and later went to college before beginning her career with Alberta Social Services. She spent her retirement years keeping busy with her church community, her many friends and enjoying her growing family.

Joan was a woman who lived her faith daily. She was always full of fun and will be remembered for her loving spirit, her kind nature and her thoughtfulness. Her wonderful personality shone through during her final years which were spent lovingly cared for by the staff at Faith House, Memory Lane and Juniper Cottage at the Louise Jensen Care Centre. The family very much appreciated the respectful care she always received from the staff, and especially their support and that of Dr. Donna Morrow during her final days. It was nothing less than outstanding.

As a final act of generosity and an expression of love, she chose to donate her body to the Anatomical Gifts Program at the U of A – her gift to the future of medicine.

A funeral service for Joan Greenwood will be held on May 29, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Camrose.

Irene Evelyn Light April 20, 1922 ~ May 1, 2017 Irene Evelyn (Roth) Light was born on April 20, 1922 and was the fifth of ten children born to Matthias and Christine Roth near Maidstone, Saskatchewan.

The Roth family held church services in their home and, at the age of nine, Irene accepted the Lord Jesus into her heart.

Irene was baptized at age twenty and began a two-year program at Alberta Bible Institute in Camrose where she met Vernon Light.

They were married on September 23, 1947.

They were blessed with five daughters and one son. Irene was active in many church leadership roles.

Music played a big part in her life. She loved music and taught her children to play the piano and sing, instilling that treasured heritage in them.

For the majority of their fifty married years, Vernon and Irene lived in Carstairs, retiring to Summerland, BC, and then returning to Camrose in 1997. Irene was delighted with her seventeen grandchildren and she loved playing games and telling stories to them.

In her diary entitled Reflections From a Mother’s Heart, she noted that she wanted to be remembered as a cheerful Christian who loved her family.

In her last years, the staff at Cedar Cottage of Bethany Meadows provided exceptional compassionate care. Her family is appreciative of the love and tenderness that they gave her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Dyann (Darryl) Schultz, Marilyn (David) Morrison, Evelyn (Lynn) Bessey, David (Julie) Light and Connie (Darryl) Runham; son-in-law Terry (Dawn) Magee; seventeen grandchildren; twenty greatgrandchildren; and siblings Leona Walker, Minnie (Paul) Betker and Lois (Hal) Banasch.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Vernon; daughter Elaine Magee; granddaughter Angela; infant brother Rueben; brothers Frank and Dave; and sisters Elva, Ruth and Esther.

A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from Camrose Church of God in Camrose, Alberta with Rev. Brian Krushel officiating. Interment has taken place in the Century Meadows Cemetery.

Augustana sums up year at Soiree

University of Alberta Augustana Campus Dean Allen Berger presented the report to the community to guests during the 2017 Spring Soiree held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on April 25.

The evening was emceed by third year political studies student Darrion Letendre, who did a meritorious job of connecting his traditional Indigenous culture, coming from a small community 500 kms north east of Edmonton, to the small community of Augustana.

“It reminds me a lot of home, the way that people here look out for each other,” said Letendre. “In that sense Augustana has become my home. A place for me to grow amongst like-minded individuals who strive for knowledge and most importantly change.”

Dean Berger reported on both the past year’s accomplishments and future directions of Augustana.

Berger began by recognizing nine employees who have or will be retiring.

“Together these nine employees account for 261 years of service at Augustana.”

In 2016-17, Augustana hired new faculty positions or replacements in English, environmental science, cultural studies, two in management, computing science and religious studies (the new director of the Chester Ronning Centre.)

Facility work

“This year wasn’t as busy on the bricks and mortar front, but we did move forward with two significant projects,” explained Berger.

The Arlene and Alver Person Pedway was completed and connects Learning Advising and Beyond in Founders Hall to what will become the new Learning Commons in the second floor of the library.

The second project, now three weeks into construction, involves the renovation of three science labs and related support space in the science extension.

“During 2016 -17, Augustana Campus also began work, with support from the university architect and other F and O (facility and operations staff) on an update, officially amendment, to our long range development plan.”

Campus Accomplishments

In describing some of the accomplishments of Augustana faculty Berger said, “During the past year, Augustana faculty members published three books and a minimum of 32 peer review journal articles, nine book chapters, delivered over 65 papers at pro-

fessional conferences and they shared their artistic talents in six juried exhibitions, two master classes and multiple concerts. Our faculty also provided editorial leadership for three professional journals.”

Berger also recalled some of the accomplishments of the Augustana students.” Close to 300 students out of a total student body of 1,000, across 39 different courses and 15 disciplines participated in 415 community service learning placements with local organizations and the regional business community.”

Berger stated that since 2007, 2,657 or 36 per cent of all the CSL placements related to environment and sustainability.

“As a result of that record, the Augustana CSL program was also the recipient of a prestigious Emerald award from the Alberta Emerald Foundation.”

In speaking of further community outreach accomplishments Berger said,” Augustana not only hosted the Reading University for the eighth year and the Childrens’ Easter Eggstravagnaza for the sixth year, we also expanded, in collaboration with the Jeanne & Peter Performing Arts Centre and the Battle River School Division, the very successful Grade 7 Science Fair, which brought in over 200 junior high students here to campus. Those students science projects were guided by CSL students from Augustana.”

Augustana will also continue the new professional education program for rural and municipal leaders. “Since June 2015 Augustana has provided professional development designs of developed cutting edge skills and knowledge related to sustainability analysis, planning and programming to 183 elected officials municipal administrators and business leaders from 55 different rural communities across Alberta.”

Berger also mentioned the partnership with the City of Camrose and the Performing Arts Centre with the launch of several Canada 150 education and arts programs.

The other donation Berger spoke about is the largest donation ever to support programming at Augustana donated by Wendy Cassady (married to Noel Cassady, Chester Ronning’s grandson) which is a fund established to provide 20 years of support to the International Fellows Program of the Chester Ronning Centre.

Looking ahead

“We have committed, as a faculty and staff, to building on our core strengths rather than diversifying excessively and trying to be everything for everybody,” noted Berger.

“Our own priority and planning are grounded in the new strategic plan for the University of Alberta, referred to as For the Public Good.”

Berger discussed the particular importance of objective nine of the U of A’s strategic plan which states; ‘facilitate and deepen intercampus connections, communications and collaborations with Augustana Campus and ensure that it is strengthened as a leading liberal arts college and as a living laboratory

for teaching and learning innovation to the benefit of the entire university.’

“As part of ensuring this objective, Augustana will be implementing the new 3-11 academic calendar in September,” he said.

The new calendar will include three-week block classes for all students.

“The second feature of the calendar change is our first year seminar initiative (FYS courses). Starting this September during the fall block every first year student will enroll in a first year seminar FYS course worth three credits.

The courses will be discussion based classes focused on a particular topic,” explained Berger.

“The common goal of the FYS is to equip students with the skills needed for academic success at the university level.

“By the end of the FYS course we hope that students will recognize that they need to become full partners in their own education not passive participants who wait for their brains to be filled with knowledge by expert professors.

Top cowboys earn cash at spring rodeo

No winter rust was shown by cowboys with $57,172 up for grabs at the annual Camrose Spring Classic Pro Rodeo, April 28 to 30.

Jake Vold set the tone of the bareback riding event early on Friday night with an 87 point ride on Outlaw Buckers’ J-9 Jay Bar Nine to place first on the weekend and he took home $1,429. Seth Hardwick came in second with an 86, Michael Solberg scored an 85, for third place, Dylan Bilton, 84.5, was fourth, Pascal Isabelle and Wyatt Bloom tied for fifth with 82.5 scores.

In steer wrestling, Stephen Culling and Dustin Nicholson wasted little time in grabbing an animal in just 3.6 seconds. That earned them $2,031 each. Justin Miller recorded a 3.7 time, Luke Butterfield of Ponoka had a 3.8 time, Kal Klovarsky and Jay Many Grey Horses settled for a share of fifth place after coming in with a 3.9 time.

In tie-down roping, Blair Smith finished his business in 8.8 seconds to take home $2,086.

Riley Warren came in second with a 9.2 time and Virgil Poffenroth followed with a 9.4 time. Erik

Dublanko and Jess Finnerty, shared fourth spot with a time of 9.6 seconds.

Diane Skocdopole, was the fastest in ladies’ barrel racing with a time of 13.448 seconds to earn $2,030.

Kylie Whiteside, placed second with a 13.508 time; Melissa Thiessen came in third in 13.601 seconds and Bradi Whiteside was fourth in, 13.632. Kirsty White, 13.654 and Taylor Manning, 13.662 were fifth and sixth.

Marci Laye of Bashaw placed ninth with a time of 13.714.

Jordan Hansen of Calgary won the bull riding event with an 87.5 point score on Outlaw Buckers’ 106 Cutie to pocket $1,539.

Tyler Pankewitz was next with an 87. Cody Floyd and Meeting Creek’s Garrett Green tied for third with an 86.5 for $852 each. Jared Parsonage with an 85.5 placed fifth.

In steer riding, Quade Hughson of Foremost counted 79 points to win $368. Dixon Tattrie, 75.5, was second, Luke Ferber, 74, placed third and Brandon Tetz, 70, was fourth.

Local athletes shine at junior high badminton

Charlie Killam School (CKS) again emerged with the most points in the regional badminton junior high tournament on April 27.

In Grade 7 girls singles, Kiah Easton of ECKS (Charlie Killam) came in first, Kiley Sutter of Sedgewick came in second, Maegen Kuilboer of Killam placed third and Camille O’Brimchak of OLMP was fourth.

Dylan Soch of OLMP won the boys Grade 7 singles over Gavin Galenza of ECKS, a reversal of the result at divisionals. Connor Hoglund of Hay Lakes finished third and Kieran Sherman of Forestburg came in fourth.

Grade 7 girls doubles was won by the Forestburg team of Kiara Streich and Semira Hillman. Emily Watters and Sarah Raymond of ECKS were second, OLMP team of Cassidy Burns and Kayla Burns were third and Grace Tabler and Emily Margel of Tofield came in fourth.

In Grade 7 boys doubles, Damon Thirsk and Owen Lansing of ECKS won the category. Carter Hillman and Justin Myschuk of Forestburg placed second, Jacob Thompson and Sammy Thompson of ECKS placed third, Connor Mandrusiak and Rylan Kallichuk of Tofield came in fourth.

AGRICULTURAL SERVICE BOARD

ROADSIDE BRUSH AND WEED CONTROL PROGRAM Camrose County will be spraying along county roadsides for the control of brush and weeds commencing May 29, 2017.

Spraying will not be done in front of building sites, along field shelterbelts or other sensitive areas. The brush control program will be undertaken for safety, ease of snow removal and site line improvement.

The County recognizes that certain persons do not wish roadside adjacent to their property sprayed with herbicide.

These persons must complete an Agreement for the Restricted Use of Herbicides for Brush and Weed Control in Sensitive Areas and post Camrose County “Do Not Spray Area” signs prior to May 29, each and every year.

OVERVIEW Reporting directly to the Outreach Coordinator, the Community Outreach Worker is responsible for fostering both in-house and community relationships intended to aide in the ongoing delivery of services which enhance the lives of women and children fleeing all kinds of violence and abuse. The Community Outreach Worker establishes positive working relationships with community groups and the staff of related human service agencies in Camrose and area to assist women who are fleeing domestic violence, and may not wish to access the Shelter. The position is responsible for facilitating in-house groups and preparing/facilitating community presentations. This is a 3/4-time position.

QUALIFICATIONS Related undergraduate degree and at least three years of directly related experience are required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. Strong group facilitation and public speaking skills are required. Ability to work a flexible schedule. Must have a valid Driver’s licence.

Key Responsibilities A. Program Planning 1. Follow Personnel Policy and Agreements as it pertains to employee relations and employment standards.

2. The program assists women and children who require support establishing positive living environments, but do not wish to access the in-house shelter services.

3. Build, support and maintain a base of clients in the community.

4. Meet clients in a confidential, safe and secure environment.

5. Coordinate and deliver presentations in-house or in the community, for women experiencing violence and abuse.

6. Participate in ongoing Shelter promotional activities and events.

B. Shelter Staff Relationships 1. Facilitate positive working relationships within Shelter program staff and volunteers.

C. Community Collaboration 1. When appropriate, represent Camrose Women’s Shelter in client advocacy and service coordination, such as Police and Victim Services.

2. Deliver presentations and information to stakeholders (service groups) about the services provided by the shelter, including group sessions for the community on domestic violence and abuse.

D. Administration 1. Complete a monthly report and submit reports as required for ongoing program evaluations.

2. Compile statistics and administer program evaluations.

3. Ongoing Outcome Tracker database maintenance and input.

The FYS courses will accommodate a maximum of 25 students each and are the first and only course for three weeks.

Two faculty members presented a synopsis on FYS courses they have created and will be offering in September, assistant professor of English Brandon Alakas with course entitled, The Journey From Platform Nine and Three Quarters and assistant professor of art history Andrea Korda with course entitled the course Are We All Cyborgs Now. Berger spoke about the new workshop series presented at Augustana focused on building a capacity for reconciliation as one of its initiatives to be active listeners. “It represents Augustana’s attempt to follow up on the actions steps recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and it drew over 70 participants, a mixture of students faculty and staff members.

“Next year, the second year, we look forward to extending the workshop to a number of participants from Camrose and nearby communities.”

Housing project

“On a residential campus like Augustana our student life and residences programs are in many ways as important as the classes our students take,” said Berger. “I am pleased to report the addition of Randal Nickel last summer as the executive director of student life, who has brought fresh energy to planning initiatives in this arena.”

Sarah McCrae, student engagement coordinator for Augustana, presented information on the new residential living and learning community.

The new housing initiative, for third-year students, will begin in September and involves a renovated house located on 47 Street that will provide residence for five to seven students who have jointly committed to a common learning objective.

In conclusion, Berger spoke about how Augustana is also moving in the direction, with input from analysis and information, of creating a safe environment for LGBT community. “We will take what we learn and use it to make subsequent improvements in coming years.”

“In closing, the most important message I wish to communicate tonight is thanks to all of you.”

Berger thanked the community of Camrose, surrounding regions, north campus executive offices and the provincial government for their continuous support.

The female was charged with failing to stop for a red light, transporting open liquor and impaired driving.

Police assisted in two different situations involving harassing phone calls and text messages.

Camrose Golf Course is running at full throttle with all of the 18 greens and tees in play. The course is in excellent shape, says grounds superintendent Darren McDermott, and he’s looking forward to seeing everyone out enjoying some golf in the very near future.

Darren says there are no major renovations or construction projects planned for the course this year. The staff of 13 will be working diligently to keep the course in pristine condition, enhancing the excellent reputation Camrose has for being in superb condition throughout the season.

No major work is planned for the Clubhouse either, says general manager Bill Penny. A lift was installed last year, providing easier access to the upstairs restaurant. It also underwent some refurbishing and provides a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The new operators of the food and beverage services at the clubhouse will be the owners of The Metal Kettle, which has two other locations in Camrose. One is on the east side of town and the other is at the bistro in the Bailey Theatre. They are well known for their fresh baking, sandwiches, burgers and homemade soups.

Owners Karry Sikstrom and Arlene Gibbs have been in the restaurant business in Camrose for many years and have lots of faithful customers who are sure to follow them to the Golf

Bill and Marnie are dedicated to providing outstanding service. It’s their

priority and having the same staff return will ensure that a high level of service will be maintained.

Seniors’ Club

Another season of Tuesday morning golf for ages 50 and over began May 9. Coffee and registration is at 8:15 a.m., followed by golf at 9:30 am. Non-members are welcome.

Membership fee is only $20, and open to male or female, single or married, serious or just for fun. Each week consists of a different game format for friendly competition and prizes. A daily lunch special is available in the dining room for post-golf relaxation and enjoyment.

The Club also participates in an interclub arrangement.

Senior Open is July 19.

Ladies’ Club

We are excited to start our Ladies’ Day League and want to invite ALL interested lady golfers to join us on Thursday mornings at 9:00 in May and then at 8:30 am from June through to September.
