A bird’s-eye view of the purple martin hobby The widespread dedication to the purple martin hobby in and around Camrose is remarkable. A testament to this is that within our City limits are approximately 130 of those unmistakable tall, white poles atop which sits an eight- or twelve-suite purple martin condominium. The secure houses provide a safe haven for the friendly, feathered aviators upon their arrival from South America from late April through early June. The birds will make the 9,000-kilometre return flight to Brazil through mid-August after breeding and fledging their young. Further evidence of the popularity of protecting and enhancing the population of these large swallows is the appeal of the

8th Annual Purple Martin Festival in Camrose on Saturday, June 17 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Stoney Creek Centre. The day will provide an immense amount of information about purple martins, helpful backyard birding advice and, this year, will also feature a presentation on mountain bluebirds from distinguished researcher Lois Johnson.

Farmers’ Market reward program

The Rose City Farmers’ Market at Duggan Mall on Thursdays instituted a customer loyalty reward program on May 4 and it has been an overwhelming success ever since.

“I know that I hoped this program would bankrupt us but, seriously, I was just joking,” said Lori Blades, head of advertising and promotions. “The response from our customers and our venders has been wonderful.”

Having said that, Lori indicated the need to tweak the program slightly.

“We have found that we need to cap how many Bucks we give out at 10, $1

Bucks for single purchases in excess of $100. This may be subject to change,” said treasurer Nima Cole.

President Judy Schlosser agreed. “We have several venders with veggies, flowers, woodworking or other big ticket items doing huge sales, which is great, but we have hundreds of dollars in Rose City Farmers’ Market Bucks moving through on any given Thursday. This is exactly what we wanted, because it means we have lots of customers coming in. We just need to reign it in a bit.”

This reward program is paid for by the market itself. For every Buck redeemed on purchases

over $10, the vender is reimbursed by the treasurer.

“Unlike other market programs started up in the community, we don’t have businesses paying for it.

We are not sponsored by anyone to do what we are doing,” added Lori.

“Plus, this is cash directly back to the customer. They don’t have to wait to see if they win something later. It is an instant reward with no expiration date for redeeming them,” said Nimo.

The Rose City Farmers’ Market runs from 1 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays all year round at Duggan Mall.

by Bonnie Hutchinson A surprising twist on giving

A short talk by Debra Poneman gave me a new way to look at generosity and giving. She pointed out something I’d never thought of – and it made me laugh. ***

Many of the world’s great spiritual traditions encourage us to give to others. Generosity and sharing are highly valued. When thinking of giving to others, we often focus on the benefits of those who are receiving the gifts, whether it’s a gift of money or a random act of kindness. Fundraisers often tell us the benefits of the gifts we give to charitable organizations – the benefits to the community and to those who receive help from the organizations. ***

Tradition – and more recently, research – tell us that giving also has benefits for the person who gives. Generous people are happier, and some studies show physiological reasons for that.

A 2006 study by National Institute of Health showed that when people give to charity, it activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, connection and the “warm glow” effect.

When we give to others – whether it’s through an act of kindness or writing a cheque to a charitable organization – that act of giving triggers the release of oxytocin and other “feel good” hormones in our brains. Oxytocin is sometimes called the “cuddly” hormone. Among the many benefits of this and other endorphins are lower stress, anxiety and depression and increased warmth, trust, altruism, openness and pleasure. People who give to others sleep sounder, are healthier and live longer.

A 2008 study by Michael Morgan at Harvard Business School showed that giving money to someone else lifted the giver’s happiness more than spending the money on themselves.

Helping farmers

The last year has been a rollercoaster for many of Alberta’s farmers – from dry conditions early on to wet conditions later on. It’s been stressful for farmers to see last year’s crop – which was on track for very good yields – to sit unharvested in moistureladen fields.

But we’ve seen progress on this file, thanks to better weather – only about eight per cent of the unharvested crops left over winter remain.

As I drive around rural Alberta, I see that seeding is picking up steam. In the south, it’s all but finished.

Central Alberta is about 89 per cent seeded while, provincially, the average is about 80 per cent.

I know there is still lots of work to do, but, with the help of Mother Nature, things are looking better.

One area where the Government can help is through the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). When it became clear that we were dealing with unprecedented conditions, I asked AFSC to streamline inspection procedures to help expedite crop insurance claims. That said, it’s important that we balance the need to process claims quickly with the need to ensure that producers’ premiums are protected.

These actions helped producers spend less time worrying about last year’s crop, and more time preparing for the coming growing season.

I’ve also asked AFSC to have regular calls with representatives of Alberta’s crop commissions. My office and AFSC officials are in contact with them weekly and will continue to do so until last year’s crop is in the bin or otherwise disposed.

To help farmers get through this challenging time, AFSC staff have proactively contacted clients to set up assessments – especially those clients

affected most by the poor conditions. This helped to ensure AFSC is moving through inspections without delay.

Last year, I dismissed the former AFSC board after reports of staff expenses that were clearly out of line of Albertans’ expectations. The last board, installed by the previous government, approved expenses that showed a culture of entitlement within the organization. I dismissed the board and appointed an interim board who led the organization effectively and efficiently as the corporation continued to provide insurance and lending programs that met the needs of its client.

Recently, I was pleased to appoint a new AFSC board with a great breadth of experience in agriculture, governance, finance and risk management.

The unhar vested crop file is a time-sensitive matter and we acted quickly and efficiently to address it.

Flashback: I once heard a talk by a Meals on Wheels volunteer. She said that originally she thought the main benefit of the Meals on Wheels program was to provide nutritious meals to people who could not easily cook for themselves – and that was truly a benefit. Another benefit was it allowed some people to remain in their own homes.

Later, the volunteer came to see that another benefit was the social contact. Every day someone was checking in on the person, chatting a bit, maybe provoking a smile or laugh.

But eventually, the volunteer said, she came to realize that the greatest benefit of the program was actually to the volunteers. The days when she delivered meals on wheels were a highlight. She always felt good for hours or days afterwards.

So – a whole lot of motivators and benefits make generosity of time or money very attractive. ***

Okay, back to Debra Poneman’s talk that startled me and then made me laugh. She pointed out that it’s easy to see that the greatest benefits of giving are for the giver. That was not a totally new concept.

But then she said, “If you love your fellow humans and want them to have greater health and happiness,” it’s important not only to give but to be good at receiving!

Being a gracious receiver from others gives the gift of allowing others to give. That insight startled me and then made me laugh. How selfish of us if we only give to others and don’t allow others to give to us! ***

I flashed back to another message of my upbringing: “Don’t impose.” I know that I have turned down offers of help, help I actually needed because I didn’t want to inconvenience or impose on others. My pride and ego got in the way of accepting help.

Back to Debra. She said, “The next time you’re tempted to deflect a compliment or someone’s offer to watch the kids or give you a gift, stop. Remember – if we refuse offers of help, we are cutting off their flow of happiness.” What to do instead? Just say, “Thank you. That would be wonderful.”

Five rounds and more than one hour after the 2017 Bowl for the Green rolloffs started, the first ball of the finals disappeared through the hole at the end of the long, green alley. It appeared young Max Logelin may be headed home with the grand prize of $1000. However, William Hillaby aimed and released, his ball also found that elusive narrow opening. Ninety-four finalists, two balls in. Decision time; proceed with additional play off rounds - just the two remaining finalists, or split the prize? Serious discussion and contemplation with a bit of silence. And finally the two agreed, “let’s split.” In the end, Max Logelin and William Hillaby each took home $500 in spending power within Camrose. Not a bad way at all to wrap up the most popular attraction at Jaywalkers Jamboree and conclude the 2017 festival.

Camrose celebrates diversity with Aboriginal Day

Camrose and area residents are invited to join in celebration of the rich culture and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus during the National Aboriginal Day Celebrations on June 21.

The City of Camrose, Camrose Arts Society, University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Tourism Camrose, Battle River School Division (BRSD), Camrose Regional Exhibition and Camrose and District Centennial Museum have partnered this year and, with the assistance of a grant from Canadian Heritage, will bring together the celebrations of Canada 150 with National Aboriginal Days and create a greater awareness of the diversity of culture that exists within not only Camrose, but Canada.

“We have been running this event for many years with the Railway Museum,” noted Camrose Arts Society representative Jane Cherry-Lemire. “We have enjoyed our partnership with them and now we are excited about partnering with other groups for 2017.”

The day will consist of programs held at 10:15 a.m., noon and 1:45 p.m. in the north soccer fields.

The event will feature presentations by Red Thunder – The Next Generation and Elder Myrna Yellowbird from Samson Cree Nation to tell stories.

“Battle River School Division has a focus on increasing the knowledge of both our students and staff about the culture, history and experience of Canada’s First People,” said BRSD community relations

advisor Diane Hutchinson.

“Aboriginal Days is one such learning opportunity.

We are grateful that our students are able to participate.

“Last year, more than 1,000 students participated in Aboriginal Day events and we hope that even more will be able to take part this year.”

The change in venue allows for more people to attend.

“We are looking at anywhere from 600 to 800 people to attend each session,” said University of Alberta alumni and special events coordinator Trina Harrison.

Most of the people (specifically school children) attending the event will be transported to the event via bus, leaving plenty of parking available for residents from Camrose and area to attend.

The CRE will be bringing in tents and chairs for those who need to sit and be somewhat protected from the elements. In the event of inclement weather, the sessions will be moved indoors to the gymnasium.

“The opportunity to be the host again is important to the community and being able to offer this learning opportunity to as many people as possible is an added bonus,” said Harrison.

As well, Harrison said the National Aboriginal Day committee is hoping to work with more local dancers from both the Plains Cree and Métis for the event in an effort to continue building those relationships.

“National aboriginal day is for everybody,” said University of Alberta Aboriginal student advisor Megan Caldwell, “Not just

for Indigenous people, but for our whole nation to celebrate Indigenous people of Canada.”

Augustana is proud to be hosting the event and continues to strive towards developing awareness on the importance of Indigenous people and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

“The TRC and Calls to Action and the roles of post-secondary institutions in helping to create those spaces and opportunities for learning are vital for not just the students, but the whole community,” added Caldwell. “Being able to

have National Aboriginal Days happen on campus where everybody can come and be together, regardless of their affiliation with the university, is really important.

“For some people, it may be their first step in starting to learn about these things.”

and to ensure public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains.

The Sunrise Village community room was packed with residents and other community members celebrating Canada 150 and Seniors’ Week on June 6 during a High Tea. Attendees listened to a presentation by Camrose County Reeve Don Gregorwich on the County’s Living Heritage Program, all the while enjoying a cup of tea served in elegant china tea cups.

Some of the guests donned authentic clothing from years gone by while others sported dazzling hats and fascinators.

The tea was co-hosted by the Seniors’ Coalition, funding provided by Camrose District Support Services and Sunrise Village who provided the venue and snacks.

Police target drug trafficking activities Submitted

Members of the Camrose Police Service Major Crimes Unit and Red Deer ALERT Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit concluded a drug operation on June 3 resulting in a total of 33 charges being laid against a total of six individuals.

During the course of the investigation, two search warrants were conducted on two residences in the City of Camrose, and all six individuals were arrested late Friday evening and early Saturday morning.

During the course of the investigation, police seized 9.3 grams of cocaine, 60.8 grams of methamphetamine, 100 milliliters of GHB, 60 milliliters of codeine and $18,230 cash.

The following people have been charged.

A 32-year-old male was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possession of Proceeds of Crime.

A 31-year-old female

was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Trafficking a Controlled Substance, three counts of Possession of Proceeds of Crime, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Breach of Probation.

A 35-year-old female was charged with two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Proceeds of Crime.

A 20-year-old male was charged with Trafficking a Controlled Substance, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Proceeds of Crime.

A 26-year-old female was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Trafficking a Controlled Substance, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Proceeds of Crime and two counts of Fail to Comply with a Recognizance.

If the container is broken or cracked, place it inside a leak-proof package and label it. If you discover jars or cans of unidentified chemicals, take them to the Round-Up and tell a staff person you are unsure of the contents.

Any container that cautions about careful use of the product or disposal of the container should be included in the Hazardous Waste Round-Up.

Stollery challenges graduates to make a difference

University of Alberta chancellor Douglas Stollery greeted the graduating Augustana Campus students before challenging them to make the world a better place.

“This is a time of celebration, a time of reflection and a time to look at the bright horizon of the future all of the opportunities the university degree will bring you,” said Stollery. “The year 2017 not only marks the year of your degree, but also the 150th year of Canadian federation. Over the years, we have survived many challenges and we have made some remarkable advances.

We have moved from horse and carriage to the threshold of driverless cars. From telegraphs to cell phones.”

Stollery received his law degree from the U of A in 1976 and his masters from Harvard in 1980.

“I want to reflect on the advances on human rights.

Consider where we were 100 years ago. Chinese immigrants were forced to pay a head tax to enter the country. This was a burden placed on them solely because of their race,” he said. “Women were denied the right to vote in federal elections and were not regarded as persons under the Canadian constitution.”

He has received the Canadian General Counsel Lifetime Achievement Award, the U of A Distinguished Alumni Award, MacEwan University Distinguished Citizen Award and the Alberta Human Rights Commission Suzan-

Because it has done so is not only praiseworthy, but essential in achieving a magnificent role of equal dignity for all,” added Stollery to the students.

“It is the means of giving Canadians a sense of pride in order to achieve equality. Every individual must be recognized, regardless of age, sex, colour, origin or other characteristics of a person. This, in turn, should lead to a sense of dignity and worthiness for every Canadian, and the greatest pride and appreciation in being part of a great nation.

“Canada is recognized as a beacon of hope in the

“The progress we have made in Canada, the recognition of human rights has shown leadership, courage and perseverance of individuals in our society.”

Canada has come a long way over the past 150 years. “But, we have a long way to go. Women tend to be paid less than men for equivalent work. They are under-represented in our legislature and in the board rooms.”

Stollery added that we have more work to do with religious intolerance and transgender youth in Canada.

“All of this brings us back to you, our graduates.

As you cross this stage this afternoon, you start to assume the leadership in our country. A kind of society we have in Canada and around the world will be determined by your generation, by your leadership, courage and perseverance.

Each of you has a duty to preserve, protect and advance human rights. As graduates of Augustana, you are well placed to take up this challenge. Fifty years from now, Canada will celebrate its bicentennial. The chancellor of the day may take this stage and talk about your legacy. Let them speak of your help to create a society that is peaceful, just, fair and inclusive,” concluded Stollery.

Being the dad of two adorable little girls comes with a few surprises that otherwise outdoorsy dad, Ryan Doyle, has come to accept and maybe even enjoy, including having his toenails painted a stunning shade of purple.

Father of newly-born Maisy (one month) and three-year-old Quinn has Ryan sometimes bewildered, but always in love.

“It is an interesting journey,” said Ryan. “I learn something every day.”

“As a dad of girls, you have to go a bit outside your comfort zone because it is something you have never dealt with before.”

Ryan admitted, though, that his wife Laura has been a huge help in teaching him the ways of the female.

“There are a lot of tea times and little dollies,” he said with a slight grin.

“You know, things little boys don’t usually play with. I play a lot of dolls with Quinn and get my

nails painted, but I am just getting used to it.

“It takes you outside of your comfort zone, but there is no point in getting embarrassed.”

This may include being in a grocery lineup and having your daughter decide to undress herself.

“You just have to roll with it and be prepared and not be embarrassed.”

Ryan works out of the family home, so has the flexibility to be with his girls on a daily basis. It is apparent the benefits are tenfold, including daily snacks brought to his desk and frequent requests for hugs – by both parties.

On giving advice to new fathers (parents), Ryan said. “Be patient with your children. People tend to be in such a hurry with them today, especially if they (children) don’t do exactly what you want them to do.

They (children) like to do things their own way and, as they get older, they want to be involved and it is too easy to just do things for them.”

Ryan stressed how important it is to let children do things in their own way and in their own time.

“Oh,” he added with a half smile. “You should also get used to sleep deprivation and being a morning person.”

The biggest thing that has taken Ryan by surprise, now that he is the dad of two, is how very different children can be.

“My first daughter (Quinn) is very outgoing and loud and a lot like I was, a very rambunctious child.

“But even with how young my new daughter (Maisy) is, I can already see that she is very different. She is very quiet and likes to just watch and I can already tell the personalities are very different, which is good.”

Ryan added, “It is easier the second time around because, when you are a new parent for the first time, you have no idea what you are doing. There is no instruction booklet.

But with the second child, you are more confident with yourself. I have done this once, and that child is still okay,” he laughed.

Recalling the times when his own parents would fuss and worry over every little thing which, as a child seemed fruitless to Ryan, he now confesses he gets it. “I find I am a lot more noticing of things than I was before I had children. I notice poten-

tial pitfalls (dangers) for them.” And yes, now he, too, worries and fusses.

Ryan’s wish for Father’s Day is simple.

“I want a little memento that my girls (with help from Mom, no doubt) will make for me and be able to spend the day with my wife and daughters, preferably outside, but anywhere will do.

“I love being a dad.

It has changed my life. I don’t think anyone is truly ready for children, but if I had to do it again, I would do it the exact same way.

“I want to be involved in my children’s lives.

Your children are your legacy and I want to be there to watch them and help them all the way.”

Ryan said he couldn’t be the dad he is if not for the continual support and guidance of wife Laura, being ever-present to help him understand the true joys of raising their children, in particular daughters.

In conclusion and with some sleep-deprived eyes, Ryan smiled when he reflected on the job of parenting.

“One minute you are frustrated and then they (children) do one little thing and you know it is all worth it. Getting up early for a week straight, not sleeping, barely eating, it is all worth it because they are so cute and I love them and they love me.”

That pretty much says it all.

By Lori Larsen Camrose Tourism is happy to be working in partnership with communities along Highway 13 in an adventurous initiative to encourage motorcyclists to photograph all that the province has to offer during the 2017 Motorcycle Tour and Photo Scavenger Hunt this summer.

“We are going to be working with communities all along Highway 13 from Wetaskiwin to Provost,”

said Camrose Tourism executive director Jennifer Filip.

“Each community has identified two iconic destinations within and photos of these iconic places are posted on Luckyroute13. com so riders know what they look like when the they come through the communities.”

Filip said the event is targeted at motorcyclists, which is a rapidly growing trend among retirees and

baby boomers wanting to get out and experience new things and new places.

‘The riders are asked to take a selfie at each icon to prove they were there,” explained Filip. “Then upload photos to the website (Luckyroute13.com).

We will have local groups here judge the photos.”

The initiative will run all summer until Sept.

30 and the winners will be announced on Friday, Oct. 13.

Sacred Arts will be providing some yoga sessions in the park. Mandella art drawing using chalk will be available for children of all ages.

Costume period dress items will be available for photo sessions. “It will be a full day of fun activities in the park around Mirror Lake,” added Jane. “If it rains, we will move everything into the Arts Centre.”

The concession area will be near the Bill Fowler Centre. Since some of the Bill Fowler Centre parking lot and the street in front of the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre will be blocked with displays, so people can park at the Battle River School Division, Mirror Lake Centre, north end of Wild Rose Co-op parking lot, Church of God parking lot, the grassy lot at 52 Street and 49 Avenue, Grand Park Drive and the St. Francis Xavier Church parking lot.

“I hope this can become an annual event. We want to provide opportunities for the community to get together. That is how you build a strong community. Battle River Community Foundation, Downtown Camrose and Camrose and District Support Services have really helped us out as well,” added Jane. “It is good to get outdoors and enjoy art.”

The Arts in the Park festival around Mirror Lake returns on Saturday, June 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The arts will be on display from the gazebo and follow to the west, and the intention is for people to get out and enjoy a walk. On their way, they will see staging areas where we will have buster-style entertainers,” said Jane Cherry-Lemire, Chuck MacLean Arts Centre director. “We have a variety of people coming. Most of them will be local performers. We will have a Tai Chi demonstration. Members of the Mirror Lake Art Club will be situated around the lake and painting on location. Watching an artist paint is always fun,” she explained.

“Mary Wilton will have a tent to make pray flags with the intent of putting your dreams out into the wind. It is a fun thing for people to do and they get to take them home afterwards. Janine Carroll will be offering some ghost story telling, Battle River Water Shed will be demonstrating Aqua Art and having Aquatic Life Sessions.”

The Alberta Band Association’s Festival of Bands is an annual provincial festival that is heavily attended by school concert bands throughout Alberta and also draws music programs from BC, Saskatchewan, and northern USA. Held in Red Deer every May, the music program at École Charlie Killam School has regularly achieved the highest awards, and this year is no

exception. All of the bands (Grade 8 Concert Band, Grade 7 Concert Band and Grade 6 Beginner Band), under the direction of Bob Bailey, have once again been awarded superior plaques and praise from the adjudicators.

A Superior Award is the highest honour given at the Festival and is reserved for those few bands who perform far beyond expectations for their level, as adjudicated by highly ranked band educators and professionals from univer-

sities in the USA and Canada.

By Murray Green In the past, Battle River School Division schools allocated funds to career counselling services through school budgets.

This often meant bigger schools with bigger budgets were able to allocate more funding to providing teacher or counsellor time.

This fall, superintendent of schools Rita Marler is going to change that.

“Services should be based on student needs, not on which school has the most funding available,” she reasoned.

Traditionally, counsellors are teachers who have taken on the role of providing career counselling in addition to their teaching duties. Some teachers/counsellors have also taken specialized training and are able to provide personal counselling in addition to career counselling.

“In our 22 traditional schools, we had a real variance in what was available. There was a time when the province offered funding in a separate package for career counselling,” said Diane Hutchinson, BRSD community relations advisor.

“That program has been gone for about five years now. Just because a school is smaller, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be able to provide.”

BRSD will be using the funds that are currently allocated to each school to hire the equivalent of two full-time career counselling positions, which serve the entire school division.

“We offer high school courses in 11 locations, so two councillors could provide support for fiveand-a-half locations, so all high school students have access to career counselling with knowledgable

people and up-to-date information,” noted Diane.

They will focus on being aware of post-secondary opportunities, processes and requirements; making sure students are aware of the choices available and have all the information they need to support their decision-making. The major emphasis for career counselling is at the high school level, so the people selected for these positions will need to have experience with high school programming, as well as career and academic focus.

Schools will also be receiving more personal support for students. The school division currently funds the provision of family school liaison workers (FSLW), who are trained to support students and families experiencing personal issues, stress or trauma. FSLW work with students at all grade levels, from Kindergarten to 12.

BRSD intends to increase the number of FSLWs, in order to support more students and compensate for any decrease in service at schools that had teacher/ counsellors providing personal support.

“BRSD is expecting to have fewer dollars available in the next school year because our overall enrollment is projected to be down by about 100 students,” said Mrs. Marler.

“By pooling the counselling dollars we have available, rather than doling them out based on specific school enrollment, we can provide a more equitable service, which includes all students, no matter if their school is big or small.”

Due to a lack of available doctors, the Tofield Health Centre had stopped taking admissions on June 6.

Without a 24-7 physician service, a temporary reduction of inpatient and emergency service at Tofield Health Centre was scheduled to occur until 8 a.m., June 16. However, patient admissions began on June 9.

Alberta Health Services had suspended admissions to the acute care unit due to unavailability of physician coverage.

The emergency department will also remain closed. “This has not been an easy decision, but it is the right decision,” said Sherie Allen, acting chief zone officer for AHS Central Zone.

“Not reducing these services during this time would put patient care at risk and that is not something we would ever contemplate. We sincerely regret the impact on our patients and the community.”

There is currently only one physician available in the community.

AHS will transfer four high acuity inpatients to neighbouring health centres; six lower acuity patients (alternate level of care) will remain at the site and be supported with on-call physician and nurse practitioner coverage, and one will be discharged and provided home care supports.

The long-term care facility at the site will also remain open with on-call physician and a nurse prac-

titioner support. There are no labour implications for staff at the site.

Residents who required emergency services were asked to call 911, or go to their nearest health care centre. Albertans could also contact Health Link at 811 for a list of other available emergency departments and clinics or for additional health information. The closest health care sites to Tofield include St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose (55 km), Strathcona Community Hospital (55 km), Grey Nun’s Hospital, Edmonton (57 km), Viking Health Centre (68 km) and St. Joseph’s Hospital, Vegreville (70 km).

Heinz Boden

Bruce Ian Smith

August 8, 1927 ~ June 1, 2017 Heinz Boden passed away peacefully with family at his side in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose on June 1, 2017 at the age of 89 years.

Heinz was born on August 8, 1927 in Oldenburg, Germany to John and Frieda Boden. Heinz came to Canada by ship in 1930 with his parents and brothers Bob and Ted. They settled and farmed in Esther, Alberta. The Boden Bros. established their trucking and custom combining company and, in 1946, the John Boden family moved to a farm east of Edberg.

Heinz was a pilot, owned his own plane and enjoyed taking family and friends up for a tour. In 1953, Heinz married Dorothy Bakke of Rosalind and they started their family. They travelled with their trucking business and lived out of a small trailer with two little boys in tow. As Heinz and Dorothy’s family grew, they decided to settle in Edberg and, in 1970, they got the opportunity to move back onto the homestead east of Edberg. Heinz was a family man first and a businessman second. He enjoyed many, many years of sports with his children … never missing a game.

For years, he was manager of the Camrose Bulldogs Midget Hockey Team and was known for helping any young child get into the game if they wanted to play. Heinz’s love for horses led him to rodeo. He had sons who competed in bareback and steer-riding.

He especially enjoyed many fun years of team-roping with his kids.

As the older boys became part of the family business, H. Boden & Sons Construction opened up a shop in Camrose. Heinz and Dorothy purchased a lovely home just east of Camrose where they semi-retired. In 2013, Heinz’s health was failing and he moved into Sunrise Village Senior Centre and cherished times when family/ friends would come to visit. The highlights of his days were people, music and activities.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Dorothy; children Gary, Rick (Isla Mae), Greg (Marj), Shelley (Vern), Lenard (Tammy) and Cheryl (Scott); daughter-in-law Shauna; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters Frieda (Cameron) Thompson and Irma (Norman) Henderson; sister-in-law Florence Boden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Heinz was predeceased by his sons Douglas and John; brothers Robert and Ted; and sister-in-law Florence.

A Funeral Service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 from CityLights Church in Camrose, Alberta, with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating.

It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Ian Smith on June 4, 2017 within the embrace of his wife and daughter.

Bruce was born at Trochu, Alberta to George and Bertha Smith on June 23, 1939 and, throughout his life, called Wimborne, Brooks, Bassano, Carstairs, Stettler, Lloydminster, Calgary and Camrose home. It was at both Stettler, during his high school and adult years, and at Camrose where he made lasting friendships and community contributions.

Bruce was indeed happiest spending time with Glenys, his wife of 52 years; his children Shawn and Carolyn; his daughterin-law Karen; his grandchildren Dominique, Rebecca, Liam and Adam; and his great-grandson Jace. Bruce grew to love model railroading and spent the majority of his time over the last 18 years at the Camrose Railway Station maintaining and running the Garden Railway, giving rides on the track motor car, building and maintaining everything and anything around the depot and, of course, mowing all that grass! Bruce loved to chat with visitors and told many stories to those who took the time to listen. Bruce remained very active even over the last several years as he struggled with his memory and suffered from dementia. He also remained an active member and volunteer at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church right up to the time he entered the hospital in mid-May. Bruce left us before we were ready, but we take comfort in knowing that what he wanted was to say good-bye while he still knew us, and to end his pain.

Besides his immediate family, Bruce is survived by his loving sister Faye (Howard) Shields and many nieces and nephews, friends and community members. He was predeceased by his parents and brother and good friend Robert (Bob).

The family wishes to send our heartfelt thanks to all the friends of the Station who supported Bruce and our family during this time of transition. We would also like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff on Unit 4 of St. Mary’s Hospital, Dr. Nichol and Dr. Fletcher. A special thank you to Jeremiah Overland; who was so instrumental in helping Bruce remain active and busy; Jacque and Bobbie Valliancourt for their prayers and devotion to Bruce; and all of our family and friends who have supported us and walked with us through this time.

A memorial service and celebration of Bruce’s life has taken place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church (4713-50 Street, Camrose) with Father Jacques deGuise Vaillancourt, CD, presiding. Cremation has taken place.

Karen Anastasia Veleti (nee Schwab) January 13, 1962 ~ June 4, 2017 Karen Veleti passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at home.

Karen is survived by her husband of 36 years, Darrel Veleti; their children Jesse (Jocelyn), Robin (Kateland), Jeffery, Cory (Nikki), Christine (known as Chrissy) (Adam); and her six grandchildren Cadence, Jacob, Zoe, Brooklyn, Jeneline and Mya. She is also survived by her brothers Wayne, David, Kenny, Michael and Doug; her sisters Helen Schwab, Donna Johanson, Marilyn Schwab, Deanne Schwab-Mcgrath and Brenda Alward. Keeping fun in the classroom

By Lori Larsen Teaching is more than just a vocation. It truly is a calling and some teachers are naturally born to answer that call. One such teacher is École Sifton School English teacher Elaine Myers.

Along with her husband Rick, Elaine has a passion for enriching the lives of students by going above and beyond what the curriculum suggests.

“I started teaching in the fall of 1975,” said Elaine, adding that it seemed like such a long time ago, but has gone so quickly. “I feel sad because I think I am probably going to retire possibly next year, and I wish I was starting out instead of ending up.”

Elaine began her respected teaching career in Round Hill teaching Grade 1 then made the move to Sifton in 1978, continuing to teach Grade 1 for another five years, then shifting to Grade 2.

“I have come here every day for most of my life—40 years to the same spot.

I love having been here this long because you get to know the students and the parents and even some of the grandparents. I am on the third generation of some students.

“It has been a blessing and an honour. I think how fortunate I have been to be able to do this.”

With one look around Mrs. Myers classroom, it is easy to understand that the students she has touched are equally blessed.

Her room is bright and cheerful and filled with wonderful photos, artwork (by students) and an array of teaching aids that are, no doubt, aimed at peaking the students’ interest and keeping them engaged.

It is hard to imagine 40 years of not only facilitating young children’s knowledge, but being able to patiently contend with the abundant energy that accompanies a room filled with very active, very curious and very unique seven to eight year olds.

When asked about changes that have occurred over 40 years of teaching, Elaine thought for a minute, then spoke about the technological changes from chalk boards to smart boards, but then focused on the changes in the students overall.

“I think the students are maybe exposed to more than they used to be through media,” she said thoughtfully. “They are more worldly.

Some have travelled to more places than students of the past.”

the new family dynamics, she feels it has added a bit more stress to the students.

When asked about some of those extras that Elaine includes, she humbly explained them, but said it is all worth it. This includes a nature walk at the end of the year that coincidentally ends up at the Myers’ home.

“Rick usually decorates the fence with some streamers and hand-ties hundreds of water balloons.”

The students get to tour the Myers’ home, which has some older unique charm, play games and are treated to lunch which always consists of Rice Krispie squares, watermelon, ice cream and punch – a dream come true for Grade 2.

The learning fun just continues. For the past 26 years, Rick has constructed the makings of a large, three-dimensional dinosaur out of wood and chicken wire at home, then brings it into the classroom to be reconstructed, so the students can complete it with paper maché and then paint.

Elaine added, “It is part of one of the centres for language arts and we are reading about dinosaurs. It is a bit of a mess, but it is something they will always remember.”

Every Friday after recess during art, Elaine passes around gum so the students can have a chewa-thon. “They seem to like that a great deal.” But it is more than just a treat.

It helps to integrate the children who need to chew something to enhance their concentration.

When asked what has kept Elaine so devoted after 40 years, her answer was quick. “When I see the light come on in their eyes

(because they understand something), that is so exciting for me.”

Even the challenge of dealing with a combination of personalities, Elaine admits, “It is never boring because these little people are so wonderful and so complex. They always give me a run for my money and teach me new things.”

Elaine said she could not do it if not for the great partner (of 32 years) she has in husband Rick, who also, with the help of his four-legged sidekick Max, makes huge differences in the lives of the Sifton students.

For nearly six years, Rick has been the assistant to two different crossing dogs. First Monty, a sweet yellow lab who has since passed away, and now Max, the short, but serious little corgi.

“I brought him (Monty) up one day, and education assistant Terry Taylor, who does the crossing guard, fell in love with him. So we got him a little vest and AMA buttons and tags.

The students absolutely love him.”

Max and his handler Rick are at the school almost every day, ensuring students’ safety.

“I enjoy watching the students get excited when they see Max. It is fun to be around their energy,” said Rick.

This energy has kept Elaine and Rick plugged into the well-being and success of many children.

“Kids have wonderful energy. They keep you young,” smiled Elaine.

Leonard Lawrence Hoynick

Wilfred Hochhausen 1920 ~ 2017 Wilfred Hochhausen passed away peacefully at age 97.

He was born on April 1, 1920 in Provost, Alberta, the oldest son of John Hochhausen and Marie Theresa Pfleghaar of Cologne, Minnesota. He grew up as a farm boy in Provost. In 1941, Wilfred was conscripted into the army where he learned two trades, blacksmithing and mechanics. After the war, Wilfred began farming a section of land in Strome that his parents had bought. There, he met a young schoolteacher named Hazel Gutterud and was smitten. When she wasn’t looking, he removed the handle of her bicycle and tossed it in the ditch so he would have an excuse to see her again and the rest is history. They were married in August 1953 and farmed in the Strome area.

They had eight children – five boys and three girls.

Wilfred will be sorely missed and is survived by a large family of seven children: John, Genevieve (Neal Stroulger), Tom (Wendy), Dan, Bill, Jacqueline and Mike; 11 grandchildren: Grahame, Steve, Tara and Alexandra Stroulger, Ashley, Mitchell, Brooke and Kurt Hochhausen, Ryan and Marc Hochhausen, and Melissa Lupien; eight great-grandchildren; sisterin-law Gertrude Hochhausen (Louis); and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Hazel and his daughter Catherine Lupien.

A memorial mass will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Prairies Catholic Church, Daysland, Alberta. Lunch to follow.

Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to Kamloops Hospice Association and Covenant House.

November 1, 1943 ~ June 1, 2017 Leonard passed away peacefully at home on June 1, 2017 at the age of 73 years.

Leonard was born on November 1, 1943 in the Daysland Hospital to Michael and Helen Hoynick. He was the eldest of three children. He grew up on the family farm north of Daysland. The family moved to Camrose in 1963. He was employed at Call Tire while still helping out at the family farm. Leonard met Margaret in 1967 at Reno’s where she was working; they were united in marriage on October 5, 1968 in Camrose. Leonard and Margaret moved back to Daysland to Uncle Steve’s farm in the spring of 1969 where their three children were raised. He loved to work with cattle so much that he started up his own purebred cattle business in the early 1980s and won many achievements throughout this time. Leonard loved the farm life so much that he never fully retired from it.

Leonard didn’t need a special reason to enjoy family gatherings or coffee with his friends, family, neighbours or even a complete stranger. To him, camping in the mountains was the best place in the world.

He leaves to cherish in his memory his loving wife of 48 years, Margaret; three children Sheldon (Cheryl Reum) of Bawlf, Kimberly (Sheldon) Grieve of Sedgewick and Michelle (Kevin) Koehli of Strome; four grandchildren Abbi-Gayle Grieve, Charlese Grieve, Spencer Koehli and Hailey Koehli; two step-grandchildren Cheryl (Colin) Robinson and Donald (Stacey) Reum, along with four step-great-grandchildren Steffani, Bennie, Carsyn and Savannah Reum; sister Darlene Wellington of Camrose; brother Gordon (Pam) Hoynick of Calgary; mother-in-law Bertha Mills of Camrose; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Helen Hoynick; father-in-law Charlie Mills; brother-in-law Pat Wellington; and uncle Steve. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.

A prayer vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2017 from Burgar Memorial Chapel, Camrose.

Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday June 9, 2017 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Camrose.

Interment has taken place in the Daysland Cemetery.

Bruce Ian Smith

August 8, 1927 ~ June 1, 2017 Heinz Boden passed away peacefully with family at his side in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose on June 1, 2017 at the age of 89 years.

Heinz was born on August 8, 1927 in Oldenburg, Germany to John and Frieda Boden. Heinz came to Canada by ship in 1930 with his parents and brothers Bob and Ted. They settled and farmed in Esther, Alberta. The Boden Bros. established their trucking and custom combining company and, in 1946, the John Boden family moved to a farm east of Edberg.

Heinz was a pilot, owned his own plane and enjoyed taking family and friends up for a tour. In 1953, Heinz married Dorothy Bakke of Rosalind and they started their family. They travelled with their trucking business and lived out of a small trailer with two little boys in tow. As Heinz and Dorothy’s family grew, they decided to settle in Edberg and, in 1970, they got the opportunity to move back onto the homestead east of Edberg. Heinz was a family man first and a businessman second. He enjoyed many, many years of sports with his children … never missing a game.

For years, he was manager of the Camrose Bulldogs Midget Hockey Team and was known for helping any young child get into the game if they wanted to play. Heinz’s love for horses led him to rodeo. He had sons who competed in bareback and steer-riding.

He especially enjoyed many fun years of team-roping with his kids.

As the older boys became part of the family business, H. Boden & Sons Construction opened up a shop in Camrose. Heinz and Dorothy purchased a lovely home just east of Camrose where they semi-retired. In 2013, Heinz’s health was failing and he moved into Sunrise Village Senior Centre and cherished times when family/ friends would come to visit. The highlights of his days were people, music and activities.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Dorothy; children Gary, Rick (Isla Mae), Greg (Marj), Shelley (Vern), Lenard (Tammy) and Cheryl (Scott); daughter-in-law Shauna; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters Frieda (Cameron) Thompson and Irma (Norman) Henderson; sister-in-law Florence Boden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Heinz was predeceased by his sons Douglas and John; brothers Robert and Ted; and sister-in-law Florence.

It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Ian Smith on June 4, 2017 within the embrace of his wife and daughter.

Bruce was born at Trochu, Alberta to George and Bertha Smith on June 23, 1939 and, throughout his life, called Wimborne, Brooks, Bassano, Carstairs, Stettler, Lloydminster, Calgary and Camrose home. It was at both Stettler, during his high school and adult years, and at Camrose where he made lasting friendships and community contributions.

Bruce was indeed happiest spending time with Glenys, his wife of 52 years; his children Shawn and Carolyn; his daughterin-law Karen; his grandchildren Dominique, Rebecca, Liam and Adam; and his great-grandson Jace. Bruce grew to love model railroading and spent the majority of his time over the last 18 years at the Camrose Railway Station maintaining and running the Garden Railway, giving rides on the track motor car, building and maintaining everything and anything around the depot and, of course, mowing all that grass! Bruce loved to chat with visitors and told many stories to those who took the time to listen. Bruce remained very active even over the last several years as he struggled with his memory and suffered from dementia. He also remained an active member and volunteer at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church right up to the time he entered the hospital in mid-May. Bruce left us before we were ready, but we take comfort in knowing that what he wanted was to say good-bye while he still knew us, and to end his pain.

Besides his immediate family, Bruce is survived by his loving sister Faye (Howard) Shields and many nieces and nephews, friends and community members. He was predeceased by his parents and brother and good friend Robert (Bob).

The family wishes to send our heartfelt thanks to all the friends of the Station who supported Bruce and our family during this time of transition. We would also like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff on Unit 4 of St. Mary’s Hospital, Dr. Nichol and Dr. Fletcher. A special thank you to Jeremiah Overland; who was so instrumental in helping Bruce remain active and busy; Jacque and Bobbie Valliancourt for their prayers and devotion to Bruce; and all of our family and friends who have supported us and walked with us through this time.

A memorial service and celebration of Bruce’s life has taken place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church (4713-50 Street, Camrose) with Father Jacques deGuise Vaillancourt, CD, presiding. Cremation has taken place.

Karen is survived by her husband of 36 years, Darrel Veleti; their children Jesse (Jocelyn), Robin (Kateland), Jeffery, Cory (Nikki), Christine (known as Chrissy) (Adam); and her six grandchildren Cadence, Jacob, Zoe, Brooklyn, Jeneline and Mya. By Lori Larsen Teaching is more than just a vocation. It truly is a calling and some teachers are naturally born to answer that call. One such teacher is École Sifton School English teacher Elaine Myers.

Along with her husband Rick, Elaine has a passion for enriching the lives of students by going above and beyond what the curriculum suggests.

“I started teaching in the fall of 1975,” said Elaine, adding that it seemed like such a long time ago, but has gone so quickly. “I feel sad because I think I am probably going to retire possibly next year, and I wish I was starting out instead of ending up.”

Elaine began her respected teaching career in Round Hill teaching Grade 1 then made the move to Sifton in 1978, continuing to teach Grade 1 for another five years, then shifting to Grade 2.

“I have come here every day for most of my life—40 years to the same spot.

I love having been here this long because you get to know the students and the parents and even some of the grandparents. I am on the third generation of some students.

“It has been a blessing and an honour. I think how fortunate I have been to be able to do this.”

With one look around Mrs. Myers classroom, it is easy to understand that the students she has touched are equally blessed.

Her room is bright and cheerful and filled with wonderful photos, artwork (by students) and an array of teaching aids that are, no doubt, aimed at peaking the students’ interest and keeping them engaged.

It is hard to imagine 40 years of not only facilitating young children’s knowledge, but being able to patiently contend with the abundant energy that accompanies a room filled with very active, very curious and very unique seven to eight year olds.

When asked about changes that have occurred over 40 years of teaching, Elaine thought for a minute, then spoke about the technological changes from chalk boards to smart boards, but then focused on the changes in the students overall.

“I think the students are maybe exposed to more than they used to be through media,” she said thoughtfully. “They are more worldly.

Some have travelled to more places than students of the past.”

Elaine also noted there are more demands on parents which make it is a bit harder. Combined with

the new family dynamics, she feels it has added a bit more stress to the students.

When asked about some of those extras that Elaine includes, she humbly explained them, but said it is all worth it. This includes a nature walk at the end of the year that coincidentally ends up at the Myers’ home.

“Rick usually decorates the fence with some streamers and hand-ties hundreds of water balloons.”

The students get to tour the Myers’ home, which has some older unique charm, play games and are treated to lunch which always consists of Rice Krispie squares, watermelon, ice cream and punch – a dream come true for Grade 2.

The learning fun just continues. For the past 26 years, Rick has constructed the makings of a large, three-dimensional dinosaur out of wood and chicken wire at home, then brings it into the classroom to be reconstructed, so the students can complete it with paper maché and then paint.

Elaine added, “It is part of one of the centres for language arts and we are reading about dinosaurs. It is a bit of a mess, but it is something they will always remember.”

Every Friday after recess during art, Elaine passes around gum so the students can have a chewa-thon. “They seem to like that a great deal.” But it is more than just a treat.

It helps to integrate the children who need to chew something to enhance their concentration.

When asked what has kept Elaine so devoted after 40 years, her answer was quick. “When I see the light come on in their eyes

(because they understand something), that is so exciting for me.”

Even the challenge of dealing with a combination of personalities, Elaine admits, “It is never boring because these little people are so wonderful and so complex. They always give me a run for my money and teach me new things.”

Elaine said she could not do it if not for the great partner (of 32 years) she has in husband Rick, who also, with the help of his four-legged sidekick Max, makes huge differences in the lives of the Sifton students.

For nearly six years, Rick has been the assistant to two different crossing dogs. First Monty, a sweet yellow lab who has since passed away, and now Max, the short, but serious little corgi.

“I brought him (Monty) up one day, and education assistant Terry Taylor, who does the crossing guard, fell in love with him. So we got him a little vest and AMA buttons and tags.

The students absolutely love him.”

Max and his handler Rick are at the school almost every day, ensuring students’ safety.

“I enjoy watching the students get excited when they see Max. It is fun to be around their energy,” said Rick.

This energy has kept Elaine and Rick plugged into the well-being and success of many children.

“Kids have wonderful energy. They keep you young,” smiled Elaine.

Every dollar invested in balls at this year’s Bowl for the Green, in hopes it would disappear through any of the four holes at the end of the 100 ft. turf alley, is now benefitting Battle River Volleyball Club.

Spring session ends with first reading

The spring sitting of the 2017 session has finished. My Private Members Bill was presented for first reading and will be debated in the fall.

A great session in many ways! We were working to make life better by introducing a school nutrition program to every school board thanks to a $10 million injection from Budget 2017.

Seniors’ Travel for Specialist Medical Appointments received an additional $550,000 to help low-income seniors cover costs, like transportation and accommodation associated with travel for those special medical appointments. Edmonton will build a new hospital with up to 500 acute care beds. This means construction jobs and lots of staffing positions in years to come as well as a continued commitment to quality universal health care. Library funding has increased to help libraries keep pace with Alberta’s growing population.

We made practical changes to make life more affordable. For example, 1,000 more Apprentice Training Awards to reduce financial barriers for apprentices returning to technical training. There is the $25 per Day Child Care pilot projects to demonstrate the importance and viability of $25-a-day child care in Alberta. The Alberta Child Benefit will make life more affordable for 130,000 families caring for 235,000 children.

We are creating jobs and building a diversified economy by putting $10 million to put CO2 to use by converting CO2 emissions in usable products for the Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre. This is a transition to a cleaner energy future and creates good middle class jobs. New schools have been completed and more approved as we progress toward our election promise of 200 new schools. Our Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP) will support 87 municipal roads, bridges and community airports in fifty communities across the province.

We are protecting and improving the things that make a difference for Albertans by expanding treatment hours for cancer patients in Edmonton and Calgary by offering evening and weekend care at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Cross Cancer Institute, $5.7 million was approved for 14 affordable housing projects across the province. We are building more than 6,000 affordable housing units over the next five years.

Home care and community care received a $200 million increase helping more Albertans get care right in their communities where they live.

There will be more supports for those with addictions. There will be playground grants for all new and replacement schools up to $250,000 per playground, saving Alberta families millions of dollars.

Some good news in the agri-food industry which posted their results in 2016 which saw a 7.8 per cent GDP economic growth to a record $6.6 billion. Alberta’s agriculture industry increased 13.6 per cent to $3.7 billion. This significant growth was largely to crop production. Food and beverage manufacturing industries grew 1.1 per cent to $2.9 billion, marking the fourth consecutive annual increase.

On a surprising note the Wildrose and Conservatives both rose in the Assembly during introduction of guests to applaud a mother and her son suffering from leukemia. Moments later without having read, examined or analyzed Bill 17 voted against it. The mother had been fired for missing work to be with her son. They voted against Bill 17, which would have protected her.

They voted against job protection if there was a death or disappearance of a child. They voted against job protection for workers who miss work to attend their own Citizenship ceremony. They voted against an unpaid bereavement leave of three days increased to four days for the death of a family member. The list goes on: they voted against ending employees having to pay for “gas and dash” customer bills; unpaid compassionate care leave for sick kids; for long-term illness and injury leave; to repeal the ability of employers to pay employees with disabilities less than minimum wages.

Next update I will provide the Bills which were passed successfully through the Assembly and more about my Private Members’ Bill. Until then take care.

The automotive section of

Graham treasures his stylish 1958 Corvette

When Gord Graham found a 1958 Corvette in pieces many years ago, he couldn’t resist the temptation of putting the puzzle back together. After all, he was in the autobody business.

“It was built in Bowling Green, Kentucky and I found out about it from a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy. It was owned by an RCMP officer in Wainwright,” recalled Gord. “I heard it was for sale, so I hooked up my trailer and went to the RCMP station. He was on the road, so they called him back in. I went to his place and it was in his garage covered with junk and had probably been sitting there for 20 years.

It was a basket case, in pretty tough shape.”

The officer’s sister found it in the United States and brought it to Canada in about the late ‘60s. “It was involved in an accident when it was really young. It had been fixed, but not very well,” said Gord. “When I got it in 1988, I took the body off and completely went through it bolt by bolt.

It took 300 hours fixing the fibreglass in front to make it look like the accident never happened.”

Gord spent between two and three years turning the pile of parts back into a classic.

“The tires and wheels are the same on the car as a ‘60s after-market style.

I’m toying whether to make that car stay original or to spend $2,000 on steel wheels, or turn it into a pro touring chassis.

That would mean lifting that body off the frame and putting a new Corvette chassis underneath it. Then, it makes it really nice to drive.”

In the ‘50s, Corvettes were built for show more so than drivability. Taking the car up to high speeds wasn’t a smooth ride.

“This is close to a 60-year-old car we are talking about. Even

though it says Corvette on it, it isn’t close to what most people think of how a Corvette should handle.

In 1955, Ford came out with a T-bird (Thunderbird) and Chevrolet wanted something to compete with it,” shared Gord.

“The ‘58 to ‘60 were similar with very little changes each year. The 1958 was called the ugly duckling because it had chrome on everything. A lot of people thought it was overloaded and took some of it off.

“The engine had three different options; the single four-barrel 283 small block, fuel injection, or a duel four barrel. This has the duel four barrel. It has a four-speed standard transmission. It doesn’t have power steering, so it drives like herding cats,” laughed Gord.

The light car felt everything on the road.

“Some people say they

don’t build them like they used to and I say, thank God. Back then, they didn’t come with seat belts, you had to special order lap belts. If you were in a head on, these cars were designed to kill you, not save you. The new vehicles are improved so much with safety in mind.”

Gord has owned about 100 vehicles since he first learned to drive and they have come and gone.

“Every once in a while, a special one comes along.

I could barely afford this car when I bought it.

Now I can’t afford to sell it because I would hate to part with it. I hope my family can enjoy it down the road. It is worth $130,000 now, so it is a reasonably good investment. I like to tell people I take my RRSP out for a drive every once in a while.”

ing about owning a hot rod for touring. “My wife and I took this car to Wetaskiwin and back a week ago

and that was just about far enough. I like to drive it around town and maybe do some parade duty.”

A big step towards a sustainable future involves the movement towards solar energy. For anyone interested in learning more about the benefits of solar energy, join Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Society (CWSS) on June 15 at Stoney Creek Centre, 5320-39 Avenue, at 7 p.m.

“The nonprofit solar company Newo will explain the basics of solar energy and how to make use of new advancements in technology,” said CWSS coordinator Carson Hvenegaard. “Come learn about the benefits of installing solar panels, including new government subsidies. If the sun cooperates, we will even get to see a demonstration solar panel in use.”

Free infant nutrition classes offered by health services

Parents who have questions about feeding their growing baby have access to a free infant nutrition class offered by Alberta Health Services in Camrose on Thursday, June 22.

Led by a registered

dietitian, the two-hour workshop highlights why babies need to start on high-iron foods at six months and why introducing different food textures is important. Parents are encouraged to bring babies to the class, which

focuses on creating a positive feeding relationship.

This class has been offered in Red Deer since 2003, but now infant nutrition classes are offered in 29 communities across the central zone.

AHS dietitians are avail-

able to answer questions and to show parents how to make their own baby food using a variety of kitchen tools they may already have at home.

Parents learn how to prepare vegetables, fruit, meat and meat alternatives and infant cereal using a number of dif-

ferent tools, including hand mixers, food mills and food processors.

Another season of Battle River Vikings Club Basketball just wrapped up with several highlights and successes.

“This spring season, we fielded 12 teams and worked with 217 young athletes; this included 75 in the Steve Nash Youth Basketball program (ages 8-12), which we offered for the first time and filled up with 75 players in virtually no time,” said Jerry Iwanus, coordinator, Battle River Vikings.

“Next season, if we have at least 20 people interested, we will offer Junior NBA as well, which teaches the game to those aged five to seven. Clearly, there is a lot of interest in Camrose for basketball at a younger age and we are pleased to provide parents with a fun, inexpensive sports activity option for their young athletes.”

Ten of the local teams played in the Edmonton Youth Basketball Association this year, while the other two played in the Jasper Place League. In the EYBA, in the various divisions, Vikings teams came away with three gold and two bronze medals, along with a number of other strong finishes.

“We thank everyone who helped make our season a success from the Battle River School Division, whose great working relationship with the Vikings program ensures that we always have accessible gym space; Augustana Athletics Administration and coaching staff, who provided some of their own gym space for our tournament and absolutely bent over backwards in every way to enhance our young athletes’ club experience; and the administration and staff (especially including custodial staff) at École Charlie Killam School, École Camrose Composite High School, Bawlf School, New Norway School and OLMP for making their respective schools available and welcoming.

We appreciate our relationship with them.”

He also thanked all the coaches for the time and effort in enhancing young athletes’ lives and also all the parents for support and encouragement throughout the season.

The comedy troupe visits the Bailey Theatre on June 20 for an 8 p.m. show.

A mash-up of comedy, music and poetic monologues, Mission Potluck brings to the stage the story of a Lutheran Ladies’ League’s ill-fated fundraising efforts in Gimli in the 1920s.

This perfectly devised ensemble piece is inspired by the true story of First Lutheran’s (Winnipeg) fundraising efforts to build Gimli’s first seniors’ home in the early part of the century. One Trunk Theatre (OTT) flips history on its head in this play collectively created and performed by Claire Thérèse (Shakespeare in the City, A Behanding in Spokane, I Dream of Diesel); Gwendolyn Collins (title role of Alice Through the Looking Glass and I Dream of Diesel); Andraea Sartison, (OTT Artistic Producer and Co-Creator of all productions), Jacqueline Harding (Mr. Burns, Les Miserables, A Man of No Importance) and Anna-Laure Koop (Le Cercle Molèire and A Bicycle Built for Two).

The show has toured Winnipeg and the Interlake region with the Nuna Festival in 2015-16.

A play uniquely crafted for prairie people, Mission Potluck gives audiences an entertaining and heartwrenching reflection of a familiar Canadian story with an Icelandic twist. On and following the 15th day of July in any year, any person may harvest by cutting, baling or any other method, etc., any forage crops growing within the ditches of a public highway under the jurisdiction of Camrose County.

(3)

A forage crop harvested within the ditches of a public highway shall become the property of the person harvesting same and shall not be stacked or stored within the said ditches, but shall be removed as soon as reasonably possible from the said ditches upon the completion of the said harvesting.

(4) Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Council reserves the right to authorize its employees, agents or assigns to cut, spray or otherwise destroy forage crop or grasses, weeds, or other growth in the ditches or on the side slopes of any public highway under its jurisdiction at any time in the interest of safety for the traveling public and in the interest of controlling noxious weeds and any other undesirable growth.

Any person contravening this bylaw is guilty of an offense and liable on summary conviction to the penalties as outlined in Section 557 of Chapter M-26 of the Municipal Government Act R.S.A. 2000 and amendments thereto.

Woman leaves with debit machine June 12

A fast food restaurant advised that a female utilizing their drive-thru made payment and then left without

returning their wireless debit machine.

A complaint was received from a hotel that a female was hanging around indicat-

ing she did not have a place to reside and had no money to pay for a room. Police were able to assist in transporting her to a temporary shelter.

Noisy hotel guests June 11

Camrose Police received an excessive noise complaint coming from a hotel room in Camrose. Members attended and the occupants of the suite agreed to leave without any issues.

June 10

Police have located the man who was reported missing on June 7.

A traffic stop was conducted and the female driver of the vehicle was determined to have a suspended driver’s license. The woman was charged and her vehicle was seized for 30 days.

A west end business reported they had apprehended a woman after she stole merchandise from the store. The woman also had outstanding warrants from the Edmonton Police Service.

She was charged and released on a promise to appear.

While on patrol police identified a man who had an outstanding warrant. He was arrested and released on a promise to appear.

As a result of a traffic stop, police determined that the driver was operating a motor vehicle without registration and insurance. The driver was charged accordingly and the vehicle was towed.

Police were called to check on the welfare of a woman at her residence. The woman was located inside of her residence and she was intoxicated by alcohol. Police checks determined that she had outstanding warrants and was also bound by a Recognizance with a condition not to drink alcohol.
