June 21st is a special day across the land. It is a day set aside to recognize the diverse cultures and the outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples. Camrose Arts Society, University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Battle River School Division and Camrose & District Centennial Museum have coordinated a unique opportunity for the residents of Camrose and area to celebrate the unique heritage of the Plains Indians through music, song, story-telling and traditional dance. Tomorrow (Wednesday), the University of Alberta Augustana Campus soccer field will come alive at 12 noon and 1:45 p.m. with the amazing talent of Red Thunder The Next Generation. This company is comprised of members from Tsuu Tina, Siksika, Blackfoot and Lakota Nations, all from the Calgary area. Red Thunder has been entertaining audiences of all sizes since 1986. Their compelling performance, made possible from the generosity of a variety of Camrose businesses, should not be missed!

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson What lights up your life?

On summer solstice day in the northern hemisphere, the day of the year with the most light, I’m thinking of things that light up my life. Immediately I think of favourite people–those people who, as soon as I see them, light up my heart. I’m struck by how many of those, family and friends, colleagues and clients, I can think of in a heartbeat. I pause to notice how blessed I am to have a life filled with people I treasure. Then I flash back to a 10-second incident yesterday in a coffee shop. I saw a baby with her young dad, couldn’t resist smiling and waving my fingers at the baby, and the baby smiled back. Lit up my heart for a moment. So people I don’t even know can light up my life. Then I think of laughter, music, acts of generosity, physical movement, beauty and challenge myself to remember three more things that light up my life… Being in nature

There isn’t much wilderness in most of the environments I inhabit, but simply being outside with trees and grass is a mood-lifter. A short item by Sunny Sea Gold in the May 2016 Oprah magazine reminded me how being outside lights up my life. It said: “Get outside. Research shows that being outdoors, no matter how briefly, makes us feel more alive. Nature’s effect is so strong that even imagining yourself in the wild can pep you up, says Richard M. Ryan, Ph.D., who has studied nature and mood with his colleagues at the University of Rochester in New York. ‘The key is to immerse yourself in the moment, whether you’re imagining it or you’re really outside,’ he says. ‘It won’t work if you’re on your phone or ruminating about something. Paying attention to the scenery the bird on the tree or the sunset seems to be a big part of why we’re more relaxed in nature.’ (Even, apparently, when it’s all in our head!)” So if we can’t be in nature every moment, we can still light up our lives by imagining it.

Letters to the Editor Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Not united

It’s praiseworthy to unite like-minded conservatives under one political entity. This July, both the PC and Wildrose parties will vote to merge into one entity called the United Conservative Party. The proposal, while laudable on its surface, raises some serious questions about the motives and integrity of the architects of the merger. Among the fundamental principles of conservatism is the basic tenet of limited government. Thus the Wildrose party’s popularity soared on a wave of opposition to the landowner Bills 19, 36 and 50. Not surprising, the PC party’s popularity correspondingly dropped. What happened? Simply put, those in power stopped listening to Albertans and concluded that a centralized authoritarian government was preferable to a messy democratic

process that allowed for local participation. To exacerbate matters, the bureaucracy had evolved into a netherworld of nepotistic appointments. Since 2012, the Wildrose has embraced nepotism. Hypocrisy is rampant! Jean formed a new political entity to replace the Wildrose without the consent of the membership. Dissent [free speech] is now grounds for membership revocation. While former floor-crossers are denied party membership, the main architect of the crossing is Jean’s paid confidant. Now members are asked to support an agreement that gives absolute authority to Jean’s appointees to approve candidate nominations. The vote in July should be a vote of no confidence on Jean’s leadership and Marciano’s future with the party. Surrendering grassroots rights for an authoritarian power grab to become what led to the PC party’s demise is a bad start. Jean and his obsequious MLAs need to be turfed! The PC membership voted on Kenney’s agenda. Jean hid his agenda from the Wildrose membership for two years, thus denying them an opportunity to vote. Like his predecessor, Jean is sabotaging the party’s sovereignty. Why rush? A ‘no’ vote resets the clock. Joe Anglin, (former MLA) Rimbey

Discrimination

Lauri Skori (chair), on behalf of the Battle River School Division, demands that Cornerstone Christian Academy refrain from teaching Bible verses that trustees and others might consider offensive. The Academy began its operation in the City of Camrose and built their school at Kingman, and has a very successful Christian Bible-based education facility that teaches the Alberta curriculum along with Christian education, which includes every word written in the Bible. The Academy, under mutual agreement, became part of the Battle River School Division. The agreement has been successful. With little, or no warning Skori and the board of education decided “either do as we direct, or get out.” This is discriminatory and we as Christians who believe in the holy scriptures and every word contained therein will not allow this to happen. I am prepared to take this to the Canadian Parliament and claim discrimination against all individual school board trustees who support Ms. Skori’s directive. Vern Peterson, formerly of Round Hill

Delicious quotes

I delight (yes, de-light, pun intended!) in quotes that surprise me and expand my perspective. Here are three that tickled me lately. For times when I feel a bit frazzled: “The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.” ~ Galileo Galilei For times when I’m focussed on what’s wrong: “If your ceiling should fall down, then you have lost a room, but gained a courtyard. Think of it that way.” ~ Alexander McCall Smith For times when I could use some hope: “Another world is not only possible, she’s on her way. Maybe many of us won’t be here to greet her, but on a quiet day, if I listen very carefully, I can hear her breathing.” ~ Arundhati Roy Light

This is so obvious that I almost missed it! I love our long summer evenings. I love waking up with sunlight streaming in the window. On mornings when the sky is blue, my heart is lifted. The trick is to remember the feeling even when skies are grey. I relish being in a plane, flying above the clouds and seeing sun colours bounce off the clouds, helping me remember that even when skies are cloudy and grey, the sun is still shining. It occurs to me that literally, light lights up my life. And light is always somewhere, even when it’s not visible or obvious in a particular moment. ***

So what lights up your life? Send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com and I’ll light-heartedly reply.

MS Bike Tour has a smooth ride to Camrose By Murray Green

MS BIKE TOUR

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose rider J. D. Bayliss, left, attempts to overtake teammate Josh Millang at the Miquelon Provincial Park bend during the MS Bike Tour from Leduc to Camrose on a rainy June 10. Riders raised money for MS research and programs in Alberta.

About 1,700 cyclists geared up to end MS by riding 180 km in the Johnson MS Bike Tour from Leduc to Camrose on June 10 and 11. “To date, we have already raised over $1.7 million towards our goal of $2 million, funds raised to support Canadian-led research into the cause and cure for MS, as well as helping Canadians with MS live better in the meantime,” said Megan Newman, Manager of Marketing and Communications of Alberta and Northwest Territories Division, MS Society of Canada. “It is not too late to support a cyclist who participated in the bike tour, as cyclists can continue to fundraise throughout the summer until Sept. 30. We can still achieve our goal of raising $2 million for people living with MS.” The MS Society of Canada is dedicated to funding research and services that

empower Canadians affected by MS. Funds raised through the Johnson MS Bike Tour will help fund things such as Canadian MS research into causes and risk factors, treatments for progressive forms of MS, translational research, scholarships, stem cells, vitamin D, diet and exercise. Programs and services: a variety of programs and services that help people affected by MS effectively manage and cope with the disease. Advocacy work: lobbying for more flexible income and employment supports for Canadians affected by MS, caregiver supports, coordinated care and more investment from governments in MS research. To support a cyclist in your community, or for more information about Johnson MS Bike Tour, visit msbike.ca. For more news from the MS Society, visit mssociety.ca.

AMA NEW DRIVER PROGRAMS

Call for Grant Applications The Battle River Community Foundation is now receiving applications for grants from the Community Fund and Field of Interest Funds. Grants are made to organizations operating in east-central Alberta that are recognized as qualified donees by the Canada Revenue Agency. This includes registered charitable organizations and municipalities. Organizations seeking funds must demonstrate a strong and committed volunteer board of directors, fiscal responsibility, and effective management of resources. Projects that impact the greatest number of individuals possible with a modest investment of funds are preferred. Grants are made for definite purposes and for projects covering a specific time period. In general, grants are approved for projects not met by other funding sources. In addition to unrestricted grants available from the Community Fund, some Funds provide grants targeted to projects reflecting donors’ interests. They include Arts, Youth Athletics, Brain Injury Prevention, Care and Shelter of Animals, Education, the Humanities, Health and Wellness, Music, Nutritional Programs for Children, Outdoor Education, Environment, Palliative Care, Sustainable Agriculture, and Youth. There are also Funds targeted to support projects in Alliance, Camrose, Flagstaff County, Forestburg, Galahad, Hardisty, Irma, Killam, Lougheed, Merna, Rosalind, Sedgewick, Strome and Wetaskiwin.

Door to door scams

WHO can

I count on?

By Lori Larsen

Camrose Police Service is warning residents of a recent scam involving a female going door-to-door claiming to be fundraising for a Wheelchair Sports Alberta charity by selling boxes of cookies. The complainant was able to obtain a description of the woman and the vehicle she was using, resulting in police later conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle in question. The female presented several documents and business licenses that were discovered to be fraudulent. The 51-year-old female was arrested and charged with fraud, uttering a forged document, proceeds of crime and false pretenses. “These type of frauds are quite common and the charity that they claim they are representing is usually a charity that is familiar to people,” said Camrose Police Service crime prevention officer Constable Kelly Bauer. Wheelchair Sports Alberta is a legitimate not-for-profit organization which according to Bauer only canvas in Edmonton and Calgary. “One of the side effects of these charity scams is that they hurt actual legitimate charities.” Const. Bauer advises residents to never be reactive in donating money to any charity. “Only do so if you personally know and trust the individual. If you are approached by someone claiming to be raising money for a charity and it seems very suspicious, contact the police.” Bauer added that even if the person and charity seem legitimate and one that you would like to support, the police do not encourage giving any money regardless of whether it is door-to-door, online or over the telephone. “We recommend that you obtain their information then disengage contact with them. If you would like to donate, research the charity online or by other means and be proactive in contacting the charity directly. Researching the charity directly yourself will help ensure that your donation will be reaching a legitimate charity and not fall into the hands of a fraudulent person.” If you have any suspicions on door-to-door canvassing, contact Camrose Police Service at complaint line 780-672-4444, or Camrose RCMP at 780-6723342.

Camrose cutting back on naturalization on the berm By Lori Larsen

The City of Camrose Naturalization Program has seen its share of backand-forth debate. During the regular Council meeting held on June 12, Council members voted 7-2 (councillor Bill Sears and Greg Wood opposing) to approve of proceeding with the following options for Camrose Drive regarding the Naturalization Program.

(1) Camrose Drive 50 Street to bridge. North Side: mow the area from the fence down to the tree line and mow two swaths (12 feet) from the sidewalk up. South Side: leave the south side of the road naturalized and plant trees on the undeveloped area as budget permits. (2) Camrose Drive from bridge to Valleyview Drive. North Side: cut two swaths (12 feet) from the sidewalk

up and leave the remainder as is. Continue to mow the north slope of the berm. South Side: mow from the fence line down to the sidewalk. The area from the sidewalk to the curb is to remain as is. Plant trees as budget permits. (3) Camrose Drive/68 Street from Parkview Drive to Enevold. North Side: berm to be cut on both sides. Replace any dead trees as budget per-

mits. South Side: west of Parkview Drive to 62 Street to be mowed. South Side: west of 62 Street to 68 Street leave the undeveloped areas as naturalized and plant trees in the future as budget permits and 68 Street, West Side, adjacent to Enevold Quarter: leave the undeveloped areas as naturalized and plant trees in the future as budget permits. City of Camrose recre-

ation manager Ryan Poole presented to Council for approval, administration recommendation to proceed with the proposed plan for naturalization as directed. “We had a little tour last Tuesday with a handful of councillors who could make it and there were some slight alternatives to these recommendations,” said Poole. Screaming for ice cream

Camrose District 4-H Beef Clubs

By Lori Larsen

Residents are invited to have an ice cream treat with a donation to the Camrose Boys and Girls Club as part of the Canada Screams for Ice Cream campaign, on June 24 at Camrose Safeway. “We are excited to partner with Safeway to provide healthy snacks and meals to kids in our community,” said Camrose Boys and Girls Club executive director Rees James. “Come see us at the local Safeway store (#200 6800-48 Avenue) on June 24th, enjoy a tasty ice cream treat for a donation and support a great cause.” All proceeds from the local sales of the ice cream treats for the campaign on June 24 will be donated to the Camrose Boys and Girls Club. In an effort to keep the good feeling rolling, the Canada Screams for Ice Cream campaign includes a Kids Paying it Forward component. Camrose Safeway donated a $500 gift card to a young person chosen by the local Boys and Girls Club who, in turn, donated the gift card to a charitable organization within their community that has assisted in their own life. Camrose Boys and Girls Club selected Katie Grettum, a five-year member and now leader in the club, who will be donating the $500 gift card back to the Camrose Boys and Girls Club. “I love being a part of the Camrose Boys and Girls Club,” said Grettum. “It has helped me so much and so I am so happy to have this opportunity to give back.” Camrose Boys and Girls Club has been in operation since 1989 providing a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. With funding allocated by Camrose and District Support Services, The Camrose Boys and Girls Club is able to ensure a centre where children and youth are given social, recreational and leadership experiences to help them overcome barriers, develop resiliency skills, build personal assets and contribute to a safer, stronger, healthier and more productive community As one of the largest youth-serving agencies in Canada, the BGCC supports the healthy physical, educational and social

As an alter ego of Wilde, Jack represents the idea of leading a life of respectability on the surface (in the country) and a life of deception for pleasure (in the city).

Camrose County encourages interested residents to attend a public open house on Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) and Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF). The County is working with Leduc County, Ponoka County and the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10 on developing IDPs and ICFs. Attend the public open house to discuss and learn more about the these projects on July 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Memorial Arts Centre (5206-50 Street).

Q. A:

I remember the classic cars of my youth and I wonder if vehicles are built like they used to be?

The safety features and the lifespan of today’s vehicles make 220-year-old cars and trucks seem like dinosaurs. On-board computer and safety systems and the way they’re engineered structurally make them the ultimate in occupant protection. Why choose an organized travel tour?

Travelling as part of an organized ttour is a very wise investment in ttravel. Group tours are definitely not tto be overlooked. We call it a way to t experience the wonder of travel. It’s also the best way to truly learn about your destination. And, it’s likely the safest method of visiting foreign cultures and far-off lands. Imagine never having to search for the right hotel, gamble on an eating place or be concerned about being in the ‘right part’ of a city. A professional guide will know local customs, speak terrific English, and be very well-versed in knowing what a Canadian traveller wants to see and do. Travel tours today offer the right balance between structured activity and giving guests sufficient time and flexibility to explore on their own. If schedule allows, you can keep in contact with your guide if you choose to venture from the planned itinerary. It is their job to make sure that no time gets wasted. Imagine never again having to disagree with or apologize to a travel partner! Today’s tours are often small – six to sixteen people. What a treat! Let us match you up with a dream vacation.

Can I get remote control blinds?

A:

Our treasured grandparents, parents p and loved ones may have mobility issues. They may spend much of their time resting and perhaps find it difficult or even impossible to get out of bed by themselves. This may pose a problem for something as simple as closing a blind and they may be too proud to ask for help. Building code requires every bedroom to have a window. If you have a strong glare coming through your window, imagine what it would be like to be unable to adjust your window coverings to block it. Today’s motorized blinds can be operated from an iPad or tablet and a remote control. Think of how much more comfortable and independent your loved ones would feel if they could operate their shades themselves with the simple push of a button. Answer provided by:

Q.

What should I expect when visiting a new stylist?

A:

The initial consultation is extremely important for you and your sstylist. Come to your appointment with your hair styled as you normally wear it. Even if you are planning on radically changing your look, it’s still important for your stylist to see your current style in regards to thickness, texture and the natural patterns of your hair. Explain what you would like done and why. Be specific and bring pictures of styles you like. Also make sure to tell your stylist about your color history and products you use on your hair. Some products do not mix well, and failing to tell your stylist about your previous product history could be damaging to your hair or cause breakage. Be upfront about what you know works for your lifestyle. How much time are you willing to spend daily on your hair? How often are you willing to return for appointments? A high maintenance style may not work for someone who isn’t willing to spend the time maintaining it. It’s also very important that a style you leave the salon in, is a look you can replicate at home. Answer provided by:

What separates your company from other insurance providers in the market?

A:

As an insurance broker, we represent an impressive variety of insurance products from multiple underwriters. We do the shopping for you! Conversely, agents who work for a Bank Insurance Arm or a Direct Policy Writer can typically only sell the insurance policies offered through this specific company. Based on our distributor relationship with a host of reliable and leading companies, we are able to compare and source a wide variety of competing products. Policies, be it: home, auto, farm, or commercial, can vary greatly with type and level of coverage. So we can better tailor your policy to your specific need or unique requirement. As well-trained professionals with nearly fifty-five years of service to the community, we can navigate you through any insurance question. We can point out the advantages of choosing specific coverage of one company versus another. And, we can typically get you the best market rate due as a result of being a broker in the field. The biggest difference, however, is the service we can provide. It’s our ultimate strength. Rely on our solid reputation and our team of experts. Answer provided by:

Camrose new police chief looking ahead By Lori Larsen

The City of Camrose Police Service will be welcoming new police chief Mark Neufeld and family on July 24 to the community. For the past 24 years, Mark has been with the Edmonton Police Service, presently in the position of superintendent of southwest division, but he has not always been a big city boy. “I grew up in Beaver County,” said Mark, “So I am familiar with Camrose from that perspective and I know from those years gone by that it is a wonderful place.” This was one of the motivating factors for Mark to apply for the position. With the reality of this new path sinking in, Mark said he and his wife Lynn are looking forward to the excitement and changes of moving to Camrose and becoming an integral part of the community. “Both Lynn and I are really excited because this is a wonderful opportunity. “Camrose is a great community to come to and it has an excellent police service.” Mark explained that Camrose Police Service (CPS) and Edmonton Police Service (EPS) have had a long-standing connection with EPS conducting the training of CPS new recruits and ongoing in-service training as well. “I have had the pleasure of working with members of the Camrose Police Service in integrated environments before.” Being familiar with former chief Kambeitz, Mark admitted he has big shoes to fill. New leadership is bound to be accompanied by a bit of concern among the established membership and Mark is very much aware of that. “I recognize this is a young service and they (CPS members) have never had a chief from the outside and a lot of members have never had a chief other than Darrel.” Background

With new leadership comes a new diverse background and Mark comes to Camrose with a plethora of experience, education and skills. He began his police career with the Vancouver Police Department before joining the EPS in 1993. The majority of his career has been focused on operational and investigative functions, including the building up of vulnerable communities. Mark has twice been seconded to the Justice and Solicitor General Ministry of the provincial government. Between 2007 and 2010, he represented Alberta police during the

operationalization of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) into the Alberta policing landscape. As the inaugural team commander of ASIRT North, Mark successfully led independent investigations into police incidents involving serious injury, death, as well as allegations of police corruption. “At a macro level, I was able to go to different organizations and see how they worked and the larger systems with respect to criminal justice in the province,” explained Mark. “I have been involved in police investigations all over the province as well as Manitoba, Yukon Territories and British Columbia.” During his investigative work with ASIRT, Mark attested most allegations of corruption were simply that, allegations, and that the police in Alberta, and Canada for that matter, are outstanding public servants. Between secondments to the province, Mark was the officer in charge of EPS professional standards branch and also served as duty officer. In March 2014, he returned to EPS and completed a recruiting project for human resources division. In June, he became the superintendent in charge of the criminal investigations division where he was responsible for all major and serious crime investigations city wide. In October 2016, Mark transferred to the southwest division where he became responsible for the delivery of frontline police service to more than 265,000 residents in the city’s diverse SW sector. He is also the president of the EPS Senior Officers’ Association, a position he’s held for the past two years. Mark participated on a variety of committees and working groups within both the EPS and the provincial government, dealing with issues of police professionalism and accountability. In 2010-11, he sat on the professional standards committee of the CACP. He is the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the national 20-year Police Exemplary Service Medal and, in January 2014, he was invested into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces as a member. Currently, he is completing his Masters in Criminal Police Management through University of Cambridge (UK). Mark was one of only a few police officers in Canada selected to complete the program. It is an impressive career considering Mark’s first ambition as a young man was to become a fish

and wildlife officer. After rooming with law enforcement students during his time at Lethbridge Community College, he decided on a career in policing. “I worked with the County of Beaver in the summers and when I returned one summer, my boss had left and recommended me for the director of agriculture which I held for about five years. “I was an auxiliary constable with Tofield RCMP when I was young and my original application went into the RCMP. I always thought I would police in rural communities.” However, his path took

of things that are really important to me and I don’t know yet to what extent they are an issue in Camrose. “Family violence is a huge one because it is a crime that is under-reported in a big way and has such devastating impacts on children and families.” Mark mentioned the Camrose Women’s Shelter and how impressed he was with the facility and the fact that it is full and expanding. Mark also indicated that he is keenly interested in building up employees of the Camrose Police Service which is also very important. “I know it is a

a different route, directing him first to Vancouver, then to Edmonton Police Services. It was a huge transition for a young man from a town of 500. “I don’t know where the time has gone. I still just feel like the new guy,” he said with humour and a degree of truth. Camrose goals

Respectful of being the new guy on the block, Mark said he will take time to get to know the service and the community, but mentioned a few areas where he is likely to focus some attention. “There are a couple

young service, but there are a lot of really great people here. It is important to get them exposed to as much as we possibly can in order to develop them for the future.” Lastly, he spoke of his intention to continue developing good relationships across the community with businesses, the public sector and other service agencies within and around Camrose. “On the policing side, we will continue working to provide good service to the community, but beyond that, my family have always been very involved

in the community that is very important to us.” Transition

At first, Mark thought it was going to be an easy transition, merely a change in uniform and shoulder flashes, but as time progresses closer to his start date, he admits that is not the case. “I think it is probably a bigger transition than I thought it would be,” said Mark. “Not that I am unfamiliar with the challenges of policing in a smaller community, as I know they are quite a bit different than policing in a larger community.” But, because he and his family will be moving to a new community and he will be joining an entirely new organization, the transition is likely to be more challenging than simply changing positions within the same organization. Despite Camrose being a new community with new people, Mark commented that, with time, the adjustment will lessen. Mark said that once in Camrose, he and his family will be making every effort to get involved in the community “We have been on a number of boards and we are active in the community. It is very important to us to find places where we can plug into and help out and give a hand.” With the support of his wife and their four grown children ranging in ages from 19 to 26, three living away from home, Mark is excited to start this new chapter in his life. “Family is very important. Especially in this job, you have to have that foundation. “We thought a lot about the transition, knowing that we would move here before I applied. My wife is wonderful – she is an amazing support for me. She will be a great asset for the community and is very excited to contribute however she can.” Away from work, Mark enjoys spending quality time with his family. He is an avid runner and cyclist and also enjoys reading, writing and travel. On a final note, Mark commented about the reasons they considered to make this move. “The service and the people were definitely number one. In my research, it became obvious that the service is well supported by the community and it is a community of close-knit folks and relationships. In that environment, you get a lot done. And in this environment, the process of getting a lot done is more personal.”

Naturalization debate Continued from page 12 Poole presented some of the alternative ideas to council. Council members discussed the issue in length regarding the specifics of the proposed plan moving forward. Opposition During a public commentary prior to the regular council new business, community member Rodger Banack, representing the opposition of the Naturalization Program, spoke to council regarding a telephone conversation on June 8 between himself and Mayor Norm Mayer involving the discussion of a compromise of the Naturalization Program in the Creekview area after a visit to the area by City management and some council members. “I feel if the City wants to do this action, which

would allow the petitioners a chance to view the area after it had been mowed and make an informed decision on this matter, go for it. “I am not just speaking for myself, as there were over 1,000 signatures on the petition against this program in its entirety. I don’t agree with council and management. I think the program makes the City look shabby and unkept. “I would have assumed, by the response of the citizens of Camrose at the Recreation Centre on April 9, this should have given the City, council and management the direction the taxpayers want to see them pursue on this matter.”

Giving Camrose the gift of music By Lori Larsen Mention the word music in Camrose and several people come to mind. One person, in particular, has been changing the lives of students in Camrose for nearly 40 years. The name Tom Spila is synonymous with music. After nearly 44 years of teaching music, Tom is trading in the baton for a fly rod, among other things. “My parents thought I was a bit musical in my early years and so they made an effort to get me piano lessons.” Growing up in Grassland, population 100, Tom took lessons about an hour from town and, while the town itself didn’t have a music program, that didn’t deter Tom from pursuing something he enjoyed. “I started teaching myself guitar in about grade five/six, then had an opportunity to take trumpet lessons.” In about grade nine, Tom started playing in dance bands and, after his father was transferred to Westlock, he became more involved in band and was able to acquire enough background in music to continue at the university level in education, specifically music. His first job teaching was at Lac La Biche junior/ senior high school for four years, where he met his wife Crystal who was the math/science teacher. In 1978, Tom and Crystal moved to Camrose. Crystal taught with what is now the University of Alberta Augustana Campus in the adult academic upgrading program until its completion and Tom began his career teaching in the band program at École Camrose Composite High School. “My goal, if I was going to stay, was to develop a comprehensive program and expose the students to as many genres of music as possible. The principal at the time encouraged me to add choral music to the program and, because I played guitar, add guitar classes.” The program now consists of concert bands, jazz bands, guitar class, choral classes, extra curricular Chorazz (chamber choir) and vocal jazz. “What is amazing over the years is that some students have gone on in several of these genres by teaching or participating at university level which is so rewarding,” commented Tom. “They (former students) also acknowledge the junior high program and realize that is where they got their start. The

seed was planted and the Camrose programs allowed them to develop.” Tom speaks fondly of all the school music programs that he has been so much a part of over his remarkable career. “The establishment of Chorazz has been great for the school and I am proud the (CCHS) band has played for the Legion every year for Remembrance Day. I always wanted to make

so many moments that are rewarding which may seem minor in the big scheme of things, but to the student they may be major.” Tom added, “Music offers comfort – an opportunity for expression. It is a great addition to anything in life. If people want something to celebrate or express sorrow, they turn to music.” Outside of the tireless work Tom dedicates to students, he is also the band

sure the students felt that connection.” Tom said the success of the program comes from all the support given from the district, school, community parents and students who, he added, have been wonderful. “And, of course, my wife who has been a great support.” And his legacy can be seen, or more appropriately heard, in the students he has touched. “The music helps some students who might be having some tough times,” he said with sincerity. “It gives them another option for a safe place to go.” For Tom, it is about the “ah ha” moment. “At some point in their (music students) high school experience, something grabs them. It might be in a performance, rehearsal or trip, but once they have that moment, it kind of hooks them for life.” When asked about the rewards Tom experienced in his career, his answer was humble, not unlike Tom himself. “There are

leader for the Community Band of approximately 60 to 65 members and plays in the Battle River Big Band (adult jazz band) and Simply Brass, a brass quintette along with Bob Bailey, Len Busse, Olav Traa and Norman Skretting. What lies ahead for Tom remains to be seen. “I want to sit still for a bit and assess the landscape,” he said with that warm Tom smile. “I will put my name on the substitute teacher (music) list and see if that is something I would like to do and continue to lead Community Band. Maybe teach private lessons and work on some music arranging.” He added, when Crystal decides to stop working, the couple plan to travel a bit and take some time to visit family and friends. Plant trees for a greener Camrose future By Lori Larsen

Residents are invited to come out to plant trees on Monday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 21 in the Stoney Creek Valley at 7 p.m. to help ensure a greener future for Camrose. All tree planters are asked to meet at the Stoney Creek Centre,

5320-39 Avenue, just before 7 p.m. “Help with ‘Greening Camrose’ by bringing your family or group out to plant trees and restore the natural forest in the Stoney Creek Valley,” said Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace coordinator Carson Hvenegaard.

“Your work will become a beautiful part of Camrose as the trees and our other work restore our natural ecosystems in the valley and our trail network where trees have died or been removed by our beaver population.” If you have a group interested in doing a separate

tree planting, contact Carson by emailing carsonhv@ gmail.com or by telephone at 780-672-0544. For more information on CWSS, visit the City of Camrose website at www. camrose.ca/168/WildlifeGreenspace-Stewardship.

They buzz around us as welcome guests to our yards and flower gardens, bees are a vital part to the continual health of our planet. Bees are responsible for pollinating approximately one-sixth of the flowering plants and 400 different agricultural type plants. A world without bees would be fruitless, literally. Beekeepers play an important part in maintaining the bee population. If you are interested in learning about beekeeping join the Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Society on June 22 at Stoney Creek Centre, 5320-39 Avenue at 7 p.m. Craig Toth of the Edmonton Beekeepers Association will be presenting the basics of beekeeping and demonstrate the materials needed to take a peek into a hive. Attendees are encourage to remain until the end of the presentation to sample a variety of local honey. On Tuesday June 20, CWSS invites residents to come along for a nature walk. Starting at 7 p.m. at Stoney Creek Centre walkers can delight in the wonderful natural assets of Camrose while reaping the benefits of a physical activity and fresh air. Anyone attending a CWSS Thursday event will have an opportunity to put their name into a draw for prizes donated by the community. The draws will be done during the last event held on Aug. 3. The more events you attend the more times your name goes into the draw. For more information on the June 20 event, or other upcoming events, contact CCWS coordinator Carson Hvenegaard by emailing carsonhv@gmail. com or by telephone at 780672-0544. War Amps key tags saving money Submitted

Most of us don’t realize how valuable our car keys are until we lose them. In recent years, remote starters and built-in unlock systems have sharply driven up the cost and complexity of the humble car key, with some owners paying hundreds of dollars in replacement fees. War Amps key tags, going out to Alberta residents this week, can help prevent this hit to the wallet and the inconvenience of arranging for new keys. Each key tag has a confidentially coded number. If you lose your keys, the finder can call the tollfree number on the back of the tag or place them in any mailbox, and The War Amps will return them to you by courier, free of charge. “Car keys are more sophisticated than ever, and replacing one is no longer a quick cheap trip to the hardware store. We have heard from people who said they would have had to pay anywhere between $200 and $600 had they not had a key tag protecting their key ring,” said War Amps spokesperson Rob Larman. He emphasizes that key tags are not just for car keys. “They can be used to protect keys for your house, mailbox or bike. Many people also attach USB sticks and sentimental items to their key ring and are relieved to have them back.” “Although the Key Tag Service is free, owners are so grateful when we return their keys that they often make a donation to say thank you, particularly when they’ve avoided hundreds of dollars in replacement fees.” The Key Tag Service was launched after the Second World War so that returning war amputee veterans could not only work for competitive wages, but could also provide a service to Canadians that would generate funds for the Association. The Key Tag Service continues to employ amputees and people with disabilities and has returned more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys since its inception. The War Amps receives no government grants. Donations to the Key Tag Service fund the Association’s many programs for war amputees and all Canadian amputees including children. Those who do not receive their key tags in the mail can order them at waramps.ca or call toll free 1-800-250-3030.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Edward Petryshen. Edward left us to join his wife Elaine in Heaven on June 14, 2017 at the age of 84 years. He was a cherished brother, father, grandfather, friend and so much more. Edward was born to John and Helen Petryshen on July 30, 1932. He grew up on a farm near Round Hill, Alberta. On June 4, 1961, he married the love of his life, Elaine. In the coming years, they welcomed a son and two daughters. After a house fire, the family moved from Alberta to Surrey, BC. Edward enjoyed a career in construction until retirement. Edward and Elaine also ran a daycare out of their home for many years. In 2011, Edward and Elaine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was known as Uncle Eddy to most, but his favorite name was Grandpa. He was well known for the abundance of beautiful flowers he grew all around the yard and the delicious cucumbers and tomatoes he grew in his greenhouse. In the past few years, you could find him enjoying breakfast with the A&W crew, catching the Blue Jay’s game or snoozing in his recliner with Samson and Diesel. We will miss your telephone calls, games of crib, baking and trips to Alberta but, most of all, your hugs and kisses. Our family was blessed to spend time together with him in the hospital before his passing, creating memories we will hold very dearly to our hearts. Edward will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Cheryl (James) and Brenda (Tony); son Darryl; grandchildren Chad (Lisa) and Brooke (Jason); sister Rose; and brothers Adam, Albert, Teddy and Joe. Edward was predeceased by his wife Elaine; brothers Nick and Johnny Petryshen; and sister-in-law Sharon. As per Edward’s wishes, a graveside service will be announced at a later date with internment taking place at Emile Bosmans’ Memorial Garden. The family would like to thank everyone for all their phone calls, visits and kind words during this difficult time.

Kenneth Herbert Pickett January 6, 1941 ~ June 13, 2017 Kenneth Herbert Pickett of Bashaw, formerly of Camrose, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at the age of 76 years. Ken was predeceased by his wife Diana. A private family Graveside Service will take place at a later date. Camrose Car Cruisers host Show ’n Shine By Murray Green

The Camrose Cruisers Show ’n Shine event is scheduled for Saturday, July 1, Canada Day, on Main Street. “This is the first time it has been held on Canada Day. We are trying to keep the event to the first Saturday in July,” said Ken Mah, one of the organizers of the show. The annual event draws classic vehicles from across the province. “With the event following on Canada Day, we hope that the synergy of both will draw a larger crowd. Most people register on the day of the event, so we are not sure how many vehicles to expect.” The Show ’n Shine portion of the event showcases the hard work and efforts of many enthusiasts with vehicles spanning several generations. Walking through row after row of cars is like travelling through time, with some of the finest examples of automobiles. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and ends at about noon. In case of rain, the alternate date is Saturday, July 8. “Registration takes place in front of the Camrose

United Church where we will take pictures of all of the entries. There will be trophies awarded for the best in each class.” Trophy prizes will be

awarded to the vehicle receiving the most votes in their respective classes. Each individual who registers a car will be given a voting card in

which they may vote for their favorite vehicle in each class. Immediately after all awards are presented for the Show ’n’ Shine, there

will be a cruise along 50 Street. The cruise will start at 6 p.m. with vehicles lining up on 48 Street and 51 Avenue. Only show-quality cars will be allowed for the first hour. The cruise starts at the north end of Main Street and heads south to RoseAlta Lodge then back up to 48 Avenue, west to Sunrise Village and then back to 48 Avenue and Main Street. “I encourage drivers to follow the rules of the road.” The drive-in movie will happen after dark at the Camrose Recreation Centre (Max McLean Arena). “We moved the drivein movie to Sunday because we didn’t want to interfere with the fireworks on Saturday evening,” explained Ken. There will be popcorn and refreshments available for purchase at the concession booth on site. This year’s movie is Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) featuring Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie and Robert Duvall.

Lamb Ford Sales general manager Brett Denham accepts the Ford President’s Award with Diamond Club distinction on behalf of the 62 staff members at the dealership from Erin Hokanson of Ford Canada.

By Murray Green

Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose earned the Ford President’s Award Diamond Club distinction for the past year. “This award is a team effort from all of our staff. It isn’t just based on vehicles sales, it is a result of a high customer satisfaction rating from all of our customers from vehicle sales to oil changes,” said Brett Denham, general manager at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose. “To earn this award, you have to be in the top 15 percent in customer satisfaction in western Canada and achieve market share in your market area then in the top 15 percent again to receive diamond distinction.” Lamb Ford is considered a “B group” dealership, with sales in access of 500 plus new units in a year. “For a community of our size to earn Diamond distinction means that all of our staff are working hard to keep customers happy. This is our fourth straight year of achieving Diamond status, so satisfaction isn’t a one-time thing. We don’t set a goal to win it, but high customer satisfaction is always our goal.” In fact, Lamb Ford has won a President’s trophy in nine out of the last 10 years, as well as a Diamond Club award in four straight years. “We are proud to have received the President’s Award Diamond Club, the highest honour for Ford Canada dealers. This award is presented annually to institutions that demonstrate outstanding achievements in sales and customer satisfaction. Thanks go to all of our customers,” added Brett.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded three grants to the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus. A grant of $1,400 is from the Augustana-Drever Fund, created to support the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. A $1,000 grant is from the Ness Family Fund created to provide a bursary to a student or students demonstrating leadership qualities and financial need. The third, $14,520 from the Grattidge Family Fund, supports a bursary or bursaries to senior students in the outdoor education program or the environmental science program who have demonstrated financial need. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4,865,000 to support programs in the region, like those at The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus.

Helping you make good things happen, forever!

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Public Library summer student Vanessa Gratrix hands a snack of fruit and granola bar to 12-year-old Wyatt Chartrand, as part of the Snacks in the Stacks after-school program offered at the library and sponsored 100 per cent by the community.

CDSS updates council By Lori Larsen

During the City of Camrose committee of whole meeting on June 12 and Camrose County council meeting on June 13, Camrose and District Support Services executive director Margaret Holliston provided the CDSS 2016 annual report. “One thing I would like to highlight from the annual report has to do with the finances,” said Holliston. CDSS is the Family and Community Support Services program for this service area. FCSS is a partnership between the province and municipalities and funding is allocated based on 80 per cent from the province and 20 per cent from the municipalities. “With our increase in FCSS revenue plus the money that we continued into 2016 that we received in 2015, we brought a significant amount of money into the community.” Provincial funding to the CDSS municipalities totalled $747,450 with a municipal contribution of $170,107, including the City’s contribution of $104,650, County’s contribution of $55,249 and the contributions from the villages of Bawlf, Bittern Lake, Edberg, Ferintosh, Hay Lakes and Rosalind of approximately $10,208, the total of the FCSS revenue was $917,557. “We ended 2016 with just over a surplus of $15,000 which we are permitted to carry into our 2017. Our auditors Grant Thornton reported us as having a deficiency of close to $15,000 reported in our annul report and report to the province.” Holliston explained the variation in reports. “The audit includes three things that we didn’t actually expend in 2016 but, because of the nature of the audit, they entered these three amounts as if they were expenditures affecting the bottom line.” The first expenditure of $27,000 represented, is required a percentage of accrued vacation if all staff were to leave at year end should they be paid out. Holliston related that none of the staff members at CDSS left and therefore that amount was not paid out. “The other thing that is included every year is amortization,” said Holliston. “They docked us over $6,000 in amortization. Lastly, we acquired a new photocopier at the end of last year and we did not sell our old one.” In not selling the old photocopier, Holliston said the auditors indicated a loss of $8,850. “When you add up those three amounts, it shows a deficiency, but we actually do not. We have a surplus of $15,000 because we used our provincial dollars wisely and we were able to spread some of them out and carry

some of them into this current year.” She highlighted some new projects and initiatives funded in part or whole by CDSS, which included a financial literacy project by Camrose Adult Learning Council, Camrose Association for Community Living Community Kitchen and, in 2016, the Camrose Public Library offered a Newcomers and Snacks in the Stacks Programs. “They have quite a few children who go there after school, in addition to the children who go to The Boys and Girls Club and the children who register in our OSCAR Out-of-School Care,” added Holliston. CDSS also supported the Habitat for Humanity and Resource Volunteer Support in 2016-17. “One way CDSS can support initiatives around affordable housing is to support the volunteer program with Habitat.” Along with these initiatives, CDSS has a new supportive information and referral counsellor to assist people in crisis who need information on services and to begin a plan of action. Funds were also allocated to expand some of the family violence program and to Camrose County Living Heritage project. Councillor Max Lindstrand inquired about the after-school care programs. “We have the OSCAR program, the Boys and Girls Club, and a whole bunch of people who show up to the library. Is there an economic base to that? In other words, are lower income people tending towards one of the programs versus the others?” Holliston replied “We suspect there is. We have indications of that in the poverty reduction work that the social development committee has done in 2014 and 2016. We don’t have the stats currently because we are still waiting for the employment and income portion of the long form census from 2016.” Holliston continued to explain that the OSCAR program is licenced. Parents using it can access the provincial subsidy for families whose income is $50,000 or less, but that OSCAR was the more expensive choice where The Boys and Girls Club, to her understanding, had a reasonable fee. Holliston suggested the Snacks in the Stacks program at the library offers parents an alternative place for children to go and receive a healthy snack after school. “I am happy they are all at good and safe places,” said Holliston. Councillor PJ Stasko commented that, to the best of his knowledge, the Library Snacks in the Stacks program was serving close to 220 meals a week.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Yards provide comfort By Murray Green

It takes proper tools and a little hard work to get your living landscape (grass, trees, shrubs and flowering plants) in great shape. The following are the top five benefits that our living landscapes deliver, without us even realizing it. Family yards cool our communities. Lawns can be 31 degrees cooler than asphalt and 20 degrees cooler than bare soil. This helps reduce the heat island effect, the phenomenon where cities are hotter than rural areas because of the concentration of concrete and hardscapes. Living landscapes

make us healthier. Dutch researchers found people who live within a half mile of green space had a lower incidence of some diseases. Our family yards make us happier. Researchers discovered children’s stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces. Grass captures carbon. Turfgrass is the largest carbon sink in the country, removing about six tons of CO2 per year from the atmosphere. Living landscapes improve curb appeal and can increase home values by as much as 17 per cent.

Reduce the risk of falls Submitted

Every year, AHS Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responds to child injury calls related to falls from windows and balconies. Last year, 175 children across Alberta were brought to an emergency department due to window and balcony fall-related injuries and 20 of them required hospitalization. In the first four months of this year, 23 children in Alberta were brought to an emergency department due to these injuries, one of whom was hospitalized. To reduce your child’s risk, always try to take these simple precautions, both in your own home and at any home you’re visiting or vacationing at. Move furniture such as cribs, beds, stools and change tables away from windows to prevent access to them. Outside, remember that furniture and other items stored on balconies and decks can be used to climb, resulting in a fall over a railing. It’s best to remove these if you have children at home. Beware of open windows. Remember, screens are designed to keep bugs out; they will not keep children in. Install window guards on all windows on the second floor and above. These act like gates in front of windows. Consider installing safety devices that limit the distance in which a window can open to a maximum of 10 cm (four inches). Ensure your balcony’s vertical railings are not more than 10 cm (four inches) apart. This will eliminate access between the vertical bars of a balcony or deck. Keep drapery cords out of the reach of children. Wrap excess cords around cleats or tie-down devices placed high on the wall to avoid a choking hazard. Removing corded window coverings is the best way to keep your children safe, especially in your child’s bedroom and other rooms where they play. Direct supervision of children is the most effective way to prevent falls and other childhood injuries. For more information on household safety for children and other important injury prevention topics, visit www.ahs.ca/injury prevention. Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
