L to R: Rob Coe, Dale Martin, Dean Steinwandt and Dennis Nadon offer the ladyballs pose. It is a nationally recognized symbol of the grit and determination of females battling ovarian cancer. This cruel illness takes the lives of five women daily across Canada.

The sights and sounds of dozens of motorcycles riding in single file through the streets of Camrose and venturing out in the rural area of the city on July 9 will have extra special meaning. It is the second annual Camrose Motorcycle Ride for Mum in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada. Local organizer Dale Martin lost his mother to cancer which led to this unique local fundraiser. This ride signifies individual pain of loss and local riders’ combined attempt to raise a sizeable donation for ovarian cancer research. Last year, 48 riders joined forces in raising almost $7,000. This year, it is hoped that additional riders will show their support and help meet the lofty goal of a $10,000 donation. The fundraising ride will see registration taking place at Camrose Motorsports (the host business) beginning at 9:00 a.m. There will be a $20 fee per bike. Kickstands go up at 10:00 a.m. A barbecue will follow the scenic and purposeful ride.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson From humbled to proud

Two weeks ago, I was humbled by Arnold Malone’s Canada’s Birthday Trivia Quiz in The Camrose Booster. I blush to admit that I knew the correct answers to fewer than half of his 15 trivia questions. I felt smug because I knew the answers to Arnold’s first two questions: “Who were the first Europeans to discover North America?” I knew the Vikings landed on the coast of presentday Newfoundland more than a thousand years ago– roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus landed much further south. In Newfoundland, you can still find traces of early Norse settlements. “Is there a Canadian capital city about 700 km west of Victoria?” “Yes!” I said out loud. “It’s Whitehorse, Yukon.” From that point on, though, my quiz experience went downhill. I thought I’d do better. ***

With the 150th anniversary of Confederation coming up on July 1, that humbling quiz motivated me to prowl around Canadian history. I hadn’t thought about Confederation since elementary school. Reviewing some of the story, I noticed things I didn’t think about as a child. Three things occurred to me. First, I think we’re all more conscious than I was as a child that our story did not begin with Europeans showing up and claiming different chunks of land as their own, even though indigenous people already lived here. As Wikipedia says, “The history of Canada covers the period from the arrival of PaleoIndians thousands of years ago to the present day.” We’re still dealing with the fallout of early European visitors’ ways of dealing with indigenous peoples, and subsequent government policies deliberately intended to wipe out an entire culture. As Dr. Roger Epp said in a book title, We Are All Treaty People. We can’t erase 400 years and start over. It may take more generations to find the wisdom to reconcile that part of our legacy.

Letters to the Editor Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Clarification

Providing clarification regarding Cornerstone Christian Academy Society. There has been a great deal of public feedback regarding a perceived conflict between Battle River School Division and the Cornerstone Christian Academy Society board. The BRSD board of trustees, as a group, wants to emphasize that we stand together on this issue. Many people have received inaccurate information, resulting in a multitude of highly inappropriate and hateful comments addressed to board chair Laurie Skori and community relations advisor Diane Hutchinson.

BRSD welcomes feedback from parents and school communities on all issues. However, the school division will not tolerate personal targeting of anyone in our division. We are receiving advice on how to best legally address some of the specific slanderous comments that have been received. In addition, the BRSD board would like to clarify what appears to be the most common misconceptions that exist, by reiterating statements that were made at the June 15 meeting of the BRSD board. Cornerstone Christian is an alternative school offered by our public school division. As an alternative program within the public school division, Cornerstone is a public school subject to the same rules and regulations as every other school and program within the division, such as the Alberta School Act and Alberta Human Rights Legislation. There has been a positive working relationship in place since Cornerstone was welcomed into the public school division in 2009. At no time in the eight year shared history have members of the board of trustees entered the school’s

classrooms to direct any part of the educational program, including the Christian focus. It has never been the role of the board to do this and it is not their intention to do this in the future. BRSD was never suggesting or advocating that this board would review scripture and decide which are appropriate or not. We do not consider it to be our place to determine what is offensive or not offensive. We do expect staff of the Christian School, as we do the staff of every school, to follow the obligations of the law and to present a broad perspective on all issues. We feel that staff at Cornerstone school ensure this is happening now. We do expect that to continue. Representatives of the BRSD board met with members of the CCA Society board earlier this week. It was a positive discussion and both groups are hopeful that we can reach a place of understanding. While our organizations are engaged in this conversation, we both feel it would be best not to make additional comments to the media. Lorrie Sitler, vice-chair Battle River School Division

Second, what are we celebrating anyway? Basically, Confederation was a political agreement among a few British colonies. Though self-government was one of the objectives, those early men (and it was men) who promoted Confederation weren’t necessarily rebelling. They were uneasy about incursions from rambunctious neighbours to the south. More importantly, they could see that joining with other British colonies could work in their self interest. They negotiated with each other, and then negotiated the British North American Act with the British Parliament. And so, to quote Wikipedia, “On July 1, 1867, at noon, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Province of Canada were proclaimed the Dominion of Canada, with John A. Macdonald its first prime minister. Now, the area of Upper Canada was called Ontario and Lower Canada was called Quebec.” That’s it. Four provinces and the chutzpah to call themselves a Dominion! Some of the Fathers of Confederation (Macdonald for one) did indeed have a vision of a country from sea to sea to sea. The original Confederation agreement was just their first step–what they could negotiate at the time. In just four years, by 1871, through incorporating other British colonies, the Dominion had expanded from sea to sea to sea. A territory became two prairie provinces in 1905, and Newfoundland and Labrador joined Confederation in 1949. All that expansion through negotiated mutual self interest. No shots fired. ***

A third thing struck me as I meandered through Confederation stuff. Canada was set up as a federation–an arrangement of equal entities. That’s so blindingly obvious I never noticed it before! Right from 1867, they had to sort what powers provinces would have and what powers the federal (total federation) government would have. We’re still having that conversation 150 years later. I predict the tugs and pulls will continue. (Remember, you heard it here first!) But it is a conversation–words, not weapons. I’m quietly proud that, from the get-go, Canadian politics have been the art of the possible, of negotiating mutual self interests. It may not be the stuff of hero movies, but from my point of view, it beats alternatives like civil war. Happy Canada Day! ***

is about to commence with a

MAJOR RENOVATION of the

EMERGENCY DEPARMENT St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Board is financing this important project in the interests of enhanced health care for our community.

Board Chair Judith O’Shaughnessy details information you need to know about this exciting initiative.

WHY IS THIS RENOVATION NECESSARY? The design of the Emergency Department no longer meets the collective needs of physicians, staff and patients. Numerous studies over many years have identified serious shortcomings of the E.R. at St. Mary’s Hospital.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS FOR A RENOVATED EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT? A team of industry experts and our own administration, physicians and staff have collaborated to redesign the department to allow: • Improved safety and security for staff and patients including increased visual sight lines of the waiting area as well as all treatment and trauma rooms. • An efficient pathway for staff and patient access to our hospital’s cast room, ear, nose and throat treatment area, as well as our observation and trauma rooms. • Better environment for the patients, staff and physicians. • Better care for patients as the general population of Camrose changes. In 2015-2016, 60% of all emergency visits were adults 17-64 years of age. We recognize that going forward in view of natural aging, patients will require increased times for diagnosis and treatment and more complex health care.

FROM WHERE WILL THE FUNDING G COME FOR THIS RENOVATION? At the September 2015 Board meeting, Foundation n members passed a motion for this renovation in the interests of better health care and to use funds generated from investments and from generous donations made to the Foundation since it’s inception in 2002. After further study, internal and external analysis and extensive dialogue with all stakeholders, a subsequent motion was passed in June, 2016 to allocate a maximum of $1 million to the project. We instructed the design team to create plans for a rebuild within this firm budget figure.

HOW DOES THIS PROJECT FIT WITHIN THE FOUNDATION’S MANDATE? We continue to remain true to the mandate of our Foundation and the regulations set out by the Canada Revenue Agency. We support the hospital as needed whether it be for equipment, chapel, CT, scholarships or renovations to the Emergency Department. Necessary improvements at our busy hospital have been studied and requested for more than ten years. While, we have toured and had positive dialogue with two previous health ministers, the present Minister of Health, the previous CEO of Alberta Health Services and past and present MLA’s, we have yet to achieve the renovations we dearly require to continue to excel in meeting the standards of treatment in the Emergency Department. While we would have greatly preferred that some of the funding for these improvements would have come from AHS or government, we also recognize that for patient and staff safety, optimum patient care and to maximize efficiency with limited resources, the time has come to make these renovations the top priority for the money with which we have been entrusted.

HOW CAN THE GENERAL PUBLIC ASSIST IN THIS PROCESS? The Foundation always appreciates financial donations to support the work of St. Mary’s Hospital. As this is a significant project for our Foundation, we would appreciate your ongoing financial support to help offset the resources we are presently investing in meeting the needs of your hospital and community. Donations designated to the Emergency Department will be directed towards this project. We welcome your financial support in any amount.

HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THIS PROJECT? Visit our new webpage: We invite you to view our new, in progress webpage at www.stmaryshospitalfoundation.com.

WHEN WILL THE CHANGES TO THE ER BEGIN? We are in the final design phase and soon to commence in the tendering process. You will begin to see stages of this major renovation in the very near future. Adjustments will be made internally to allow full and uninterrupted service in our Emergency Department during construction. We ask and thank you for your patience as we complete this renovation.

Indigenous day celebrated with culture

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The soccer field in front of University of Alberta, Augustana Campus was filled with excitement and cultural pageantry in celebration of Aboriginal (Indigenous) Day on June 21. Photos clockwise: Red Thunder The Next Generation wowed the crowds with their interpretive dances and colourful costumes as seen by this warrior. Elder Myrna Yellowbird from Samson Cree Nation read a poignant story about a young child sneaking out to see the dances of the aboriginal culture that were once forbidden by the government. Red Thunder dancer entertained with a Women’s Fancy Dance. The drummer/ singer’s accompaniment rang out across the field. Members of the Red Thunder The Next Generation invited attendees to join in the Friendship Dance. Other dances included the Women’s Jingle Dress Dance and the very athletic Hoop Dance. Red Thunder The Next Generation began the event with a welcome dance.

SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER! Students of Battle River School Division leave their classrooms on Thursday, June 29 and won’t be returning until Tuesday, September 5.

By Lori Larsen

Did you know the peregrine falcon can reach faster speeds than any other animal on the planet when performing the stoop? The maneuver involves the bird soaring to a great height and then diving steeply at speeds of over 320 km/h and hitting one wing of its prey to avoid harming itself during impact. If you would like to learn more about this amazing animal and experience one up close, join CWSS on Thursday, June 29 as they welcome local falconer Helen Trefry of the Beaverhill Bird Observatory. “Trefry will bring one of her peregrine falcons to talk about Preserving the Peregrines and how breeding programs, like the Trefry’s, helped bring peregrines back from the brink of extinction,” said Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Coordinator Carson Hvenegaard. Residents are also invited to join in on a ecowalk on Tuesday, June 27 at Stoney Creek Valley at 7 p.m. and learn more about Camrose’s ecosystems, including plants, animals and water. Anyone attending a

Please watch for them in the playgrounds, parks and streets. Let’s make this summer a safe and happy one! Summer hours are in effect. All schools are closed until Monday, August 28. Starting in July, Division Office is open Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., with the exception of statutory holidays Monday, July 3 and Monday, August 7. CWSS Thursday event will have an opportunity to put their name into a draw for prizes donated by the community. The draws will be done during the last event held on Aug. 3. The more events you attend, the more times your name goes into the draw. For more information on the June 29 event or other upcoming events, contact CCWS coordinator Carson Hvenegaard by emailing carsonhv@gmail. com or by telephone at 780672-0544. GREENING UP Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Planting trees is one of the ways Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Society hope to ensure a greener future. “True friends are always together in spirit”

By Lori Larsen In an effort to thank members of the community for their generous gifts of scholarships, bursaries and awards, the University of Alberta Augustana Campus student recipients join their donors in a celebration of giving, receiving and giving back during the Community Awards Banquet, an evening that reflects the hard work of the Augustana Development Office. Spearheading the development office is Bonita (Bonnie) Anderson, who, after 12 years of passionately pursuing fundraising opportunities, will be retiring from the director position as of June 28.

work – seeing students succeed. “That’s what drives me. Whether they (students) are emerging artists, scientists who need support in the labs they are working in or students who need awards or bursaries.” Coming to Augustana was an easy choice for Bonnie, having an appreciation for smaller institutions. “I have come to realize I have a real soft spot for small liberal arts-type post-secondary institutions. You have to wear many hats and everyday there is variety.” Bonnie also noted that fundraising is all about building relationships. “Whether that is the fac-

there are a number of things we do very well that are the envy of other faculties in the U of A. “One is the Community Awards Program and Banquet. We have one of the largest support programs in the university. It is a Community Awards Program built on people in this community believing in the institution and the students. “It is so meaningful to the donor and it is inspiring to the students. We often get thank you notes that say ‘I (students) hope I can do this some day’ and that, in itself, is so meaningful to the donor, coming back full circle. The program started in

FREE LATTE

Murray Green, Camrose Booster East end Camrose Tim Hortons supervisor Lynne Van Slyke offers Hailey Haugen of Provost a free latte during the grand re-opening of the outlet on June 23.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster University of Alberta Augustana Campus Bonita Anderson is proud of the many donordriven accomplishments including the new Alver and Arlene Person Pedway, the Luther and Florence Olson Welcome Centre, the Jean Hachborn Common Room and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre.

“Most faculties have a development office, but most of us do a full advancement program including annual giving, planned giving, major gifts and those types of things. The director oversees that,” said Bonnie. Consisting of a staff of three, communication coordinator and administrative assistant Sydney Tancowny, assistant director Bree Urkow and Bonnie herself, the Augustana Development Office works enthusiastically at connecting the community to the students by providing opportunities for donorship. “In doing the work at the campus in development, we have really become connected to all the academic units. We don’t have any needs; we support the needs of all the various units on campus.” Prior to working with Augustana, Bonnie worked with the Alberta College Conservatory of Music at Grant MacEwan. “When you are in the arts, fundraising becomes part of your daily routine,” smiled Bonnie. But it isn’t the fundraising that motivates Bonnie, it is the result of that

ulty, staff, students or the community, it is so easy to build and maintain those relationships.” While fundraising isn’t for everyone, Bonnie admits that it is actually quite a creative process. It enables her to call upon, not only her technical skills, but her obvious conceptual skills as well. “I am a people person, so those relationships are important. It’s about knowing what we (university) need and listening to people interested in supporting the students and bringing those things together. “To be successful in a post-secondary institution you have to understand education and you have to be passionate and be creative.” And the development office, under the direction of Bonnie, and her passion for making students’ lives better, has been very successful in bringing together the needs of students university) with the philanthropy of the community. “Augustana is a difference maker in itself,” remarked Bonnie. “Within the University of Alberta,

1974 by volunteer community leaders and has grown to be the outstanding program it is today with some awards existing over 40 years. “That program, in many ways, anchors our total giving program, because that is where our relationships are first built. “If I have had a hand to play in that by shaping the opportunities that I have been able to bring to campus, that makes me proud.” While Bonnie admits she will not miss the commute from Leduc to Camrose, she will miss everything else about her experience at Augustana and the greater Camrose community. “I have made a lot of friends over the past 12 years.” Her future quests will include her other passions, namely music and bringing music into the lives of her four grandchildren. “This will be totally up my alley. We just sing, sing sing.” Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? Let us know. Call The Camrose Booster at 780-672-3142.

Use heat safety methods this summer By Lori Larsen

Albertans wait for what seems an eternity to get out and enjoy the warm summer weather and, true to the nature of Alberta, those warm days can come fast and furious. Spending hours outside taking in the sunshine no doubt has its health benefits, but it doesn’t come without some risks as well. Heat safety should always be considered when heading outside, especially when the temperatures soar. Be sure to take frequent breaks from the heat

by either heading indoors or under shade. Sunscreen is a must and can be the layer needed to protect the skin from damaging sun rays and the possibility of skin cancer. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Apply 20 minutes before going outside and reapply frequently, especially when in and out of water. Stay hydrated. In the heat, our body loses muchneeded hydration and often we are not even aware. Keep a water bottle close at hand. Dress the part. Wearing

a hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/UVB CSA certified seal) go a long way in protecting you from the sun. Light-coloured clothing will help in keeping your body cool. Albertans are also urged to keep an eye out for heat warnings issued by Environment Canada. The warnings are posted online at http:// weather.gc.ca/warnings/ index_e.html?prov=ab to keep residents informed and prepared during periods of extreme heat. Visit www.ahs.ca/heat for more information on heat safety.

SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID! A remarkable new hearing aid is now available and getting rave reviews from retirees! It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown

to reduce the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

Now providing FREE, no obligation hearing tests! Call now or visit AndersonHearing.com

Judging for all entries will take place on July 13 at 10:30 a.m. with the show commencing at 2 until 7 p.m. Entries need to be in between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Judges generally give an adjudication on the entries, offering some tips and information. “The first rose I put in had a confused centre,” laughed Diane. “The petals kind of curled in instead of coming out evenly all the way around,” she said, indicating the information the judges provide can be very helpful. Special awards will be given for Best Shrub Rose, Best Hybrid Tea Rose, Best Lily, First Time Exhibitor and, this year, an award for Arrangement Celebrating Canada 150 will be given. Judging the f loral arrangements this year will be Liz Long from Camrose. Liz is certified with the Alberta Horticulture Association for judging. Booklets describing the rules, awards, classes of entry and containing an entry form will be available at Pedersen’s Florists and Frankie’s Flower Shop. BRCF thanks donors and community during open house By Lori Larsen

The Battle River Community Foundation welcomed donors and guests to the annual Open House held on June 21 at the Norsemen Inn, an evening dedicated to the continual support and generosity of BRCF donors and the community. Chairman of the board Vivianne Grue began the meeting with an inspirational quote about being a donor. “Giving is not just about making a donation. Giving is about making a difference.

“A community foundation is most often just the right vehicle for meeting donors’ wishes,” said Grue, “Since it can grant to all sectors, far and wide, and go on granting year after year, thus creating a true legacy gift. “Everyone wins when we work together and our communities are better supported through effective charitable giving.” In 2016, BRCF earnings were just over $560,000 and it received over $1 million from donors. A total of $903,598 was granted

back to the communities of which $693,998 came from investment income and $209,590 from flow through grants. Since the first grants in 1996, BRCF has granted at total of $4,818,150. Bl a i n Fo wler announced the next Community Builders and subsequent dinner. “Tom’s (Kuntz) rather modest idea (the Community Builders Dinner) has evolved into one of the top social events of the fall season, while generating over $800,000 in endowments that will benefit our community forever. “Tonight, I am pleased to announce we will be celebrating another equally deserving couple for the multitude of ways in which they supported and contributed to the growth of our community and our province. It is with a great deal of pride that I reveal this year’s honourees to be Shirley and Ken Rostad.” The 2017 Community Builders Dinner will be held on Oct. 20 at the Norsemen Inn. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Aug. 9. The first speaker of the evening, Jon Stolee, related to guests how religion, politics and chickens influence why he, and his wife Shannon, choose to give specifically to BRCF. “It comes to us out of our faith and how we were raised,” began Stolee In regards to political motivation, Stolee said, “When we give money to a purpose, we change the world a little bit in the direction that we want the world to be.” With an insert of humour, Stolee also spoke about the correlation between giving to BRCF versus directly giving to a charity of choice.

“Every day, each of our hens lay a great big beautiful brown egg. On any particular day, I can either eat the chicken or I can eat the egg. But if I eat the chicken, I am going to get one meal and that is going to be it, no more eggs. And that is how I think of the endowment fund. A dollar that you entrust to the Foundation is, over the decades and, I hope, over the centuries, going to yield much more money and help many more people.” Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman spoke about the impact BRCF funds have on communities. In particular, how BRCF funds contribute to library programs, specifically the need for more adult programing. “The Battle River Community Foundation has helped us truly open the doors to adults. “In 2014, the BRCF grant funding to us increased quite dramatically and, as a result, we were able to focus on adults of our community and welcome them to stay in the library. Cryderman provided some statistics that reflect the impact BRCF funding has had on the library and members of the community it serves. “In 2011, a grand total of 2,500 people

attended all of our library programming. “Our funding increased in 2014. We directed all of that funding toward programming just for adults. That all started in 2015 and, in 2015, we had 4,023 adults attend programs. In 2016, that number was 5,031 and we are projected to have 5,460 attend programming this year. “Your (BRCF) care means that the library is able to fulfill the legacy of the Irving family.” The guest speaker for the evening, Darryl Schultz, retired Camrose dentist and BRCF director, gave an informed presentation on the concepts of planned giving. In a reference to Gordon Wusyk’s book Drift, Drown Or Decide: Navigational Tools for Business Families in Transition, Schultz suggested leaving personal estates should also be done with distinction and “planning a death well lived”. “Dyann and I wanted to leave our four sons a sum of money that they can take and administer after we are gone and, from the income of that money, take it and give it to the charities that they have carefully examined. SENIORS’ WEEK

Submitted Camrose and District Senior Society honoured Celebrating Seniors Week at Mirror Lake Centre on June 8. President Lawrence Baker welcomed guests to have lunch and cake.

“Then, each year, assign the income from that money to those charities,” explained Schultz, adding it will be an ongoing multigenerational concept. In comparing beginning a private foundation versus the already wellestablished BRCF, Schultz

indicated the choice was easy. “By starting a donoradvised fund through the BRCF, we would be able to accomplish the intentions of a private foundation.” Schultz also spoke of the low costs of operating and quality administration and advice available by donating through the BRCF.

“Through the BRCF, our children and our grandchildren will continue to learn the importance of investment, investment management, project evaluation and the impact assessment these investments can have on a community. “We hope to continue to teach our children and their children the importance of giving.”

GUEST EDITORIAL

Canada, our home By Arnold Malone

Most persons have an attachment to home. While attending university, I asked a fellow classmate, “What town are you from?” There was a pause followed by, “I don’t have a town. My Dad was in the military and I moved every couple of years, often to another country,” she added. I grew up in a farming family along with three sisters and two brothers. I have tried to imagine what it would be like to not have a place called “Home.” The notion escapes me. In Jerusalem, I met a man and asked where he was from. He said he was from Haifa. I asked him when he came to Jerusalem and he said, “My grandfather came from Haifa.” He had never, ever been to Haifa. “How can you be from Haifa if you have never been there?” I asked. “All my people are there,” he replied. Persons who have left the Atlantic provinces often speak of “Home” even though they may have married away and lived for decades in a far away place. The question arises, “What gives a place meaning?” If, for many, a place has a special attachment, then what are the traits that make we, as Canadians, attracted to our country? I submit it is more than moose, loons, forests, Canadian geese, four seasons, a never-ending winter and a host of other images that so many from afar attribute to us. Canada does have an abundance of beauty, but we are more than our landscape. I hold that Canada is a place of envied values. Around the world, others see us as an example of how people can and should live. We do more than tolerate one another; we engage with each other. Canada is not the rugged individual like Marlboro Man-image that the United States tries to pretend that they are. We are a more communal population, one that tries to move forward as a whole rather than individually. I suspect that some of these characteristics are derived from our climatic challenge. From our earliest days, we knew that survival in the harshness of winter required that we rely on one another. Sharing for survival has likely left a cultural stamp on what we have become. It was not easy for Canadians of long ago to seek a new frontier and become successful by only their selfdetermination. Living in Canada a century ago required inter-dependence which was different from the American mid-range and southern regions. So, when we are abroad and proud of being Canadian, it is often about the characteristic that we are tolerant, inclusive, diverse and collectively successful. Canada is more than mere scenery; it is our special set of values that gives us pride. Lake Louise, Niagara Falls, the Columbia Valley and the sweeping prairies are the icing that tops off our love of country. Nevertheless, it is our entrenched culture of togetherness that defines Canada as home. In Sweden, everyone looks Swedish. On the streets of our larger Canadian cities, people look somewhat like those in the cafeteria at the United Nations. Generally, we feel safe without a gun in every glove compartment and we have influence on the world stage far above our population numbers. We feel pride knowing that no other nation with only thirty-six million persons has as much influence on the world stage as we do. We are influential with NATO, the World Bank, the G Seven, the British Commonwealth, the United Nations, La Francophonie and a host of other associations. No nation is perfect. Yet, as Canadians, we have a strong attachment to ‘Our Home and Native Land’ and we are proud to stand on guard for thee, O Canada, because, in spite of our moments of criticism, we truly love this country.

Harvey Allan Bergstrom May 21, 1945 ~ June 19, 2017 Harvey was born on May 21, 1945 in Camrose, AB to Evert and Edna Bergstrom, a younger brother to Eddie Bergstrom. Harvey was raised on the farm near Meeting Creek where he attended school. On July 21, 1967, Harvey married the love of his life, Betty Young. Together they raised their son Philip and daughter Kristine in the Meeting Creek area. Harvey had a variety of jobs throughout the years. Everything from operating a grader, being a derrick man on the rigs, equipment operator for building roads, to owning his back-hoe service and snowplowing business. He was also a crop adjuster for many years, but through all these jobs, his love of farming remained strong. Harvey enjoyed visiting and having coffee and, if he could get a rise out of someone, his day would be that much better. If anyone ever needed a helping hand, he would be the first to offer and give it. Harvey would do his best to find fun and sometimes more fun in any situation. The love of his grandchildren was second to none and a prouder grandpa you could not find. Near the end of his life, he wanted us to know how lucky he was to have had such good kids and grandkids. Harvey loved and enjoyed travelling, snowmobiling and quadding. One of his other special interests was helping care for the Meeting Creek Cemetery, in which he took great pride. Harvey passed away peacefully at home on June 19, 2017 with his family by his side. Left to cherish his memory forever are his wife of almost 50 years, Betty; son Philip (Tara) Bergstrom; daughter Kristine (Russel) Sutley; grandchildren Cody (Rhianna) Sutley, Brett Sutley, Brayden Sutley, Axel Bergstrom and Lexa Bergstrom; brother Eddie (Shirley) Bergstrom; brothers-in-law Clarence (Brenda) Young, Melvin (Jean) Young, Leon (Carol) Young and Norman (Lisa) Young; sister-in-law Vi Steinhoff; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. As we celebrate Canada 150, think back on the automotive industry in our nation. We often think of Canadians not doing very well with no actual national independent companies. Canada’s first car hit the road the same year as Canada’s confederation, in 1867. The steam buggy was designed and built by Henry Seth Taylor, a prosperous watchmaker, jeweler and businessman in Stanstead, Quebec. Taylor never went into the car-making business. The automotive industry in Canada consists primarily of assembly plants of foreign automakers, most with headquarters in the United States or Japan. However, the world is rapidly changing and China is actually number one in producing vehicles, not the USA or Japan. Although Canada had some glory days, Canada is currently the ninth largest auto producer in the world, producing about 2.1 million cars a year, down from seventh place with three million per year a few years ago. China, Spain, India, Brazil and Mexico all recently surpassed Canadian production for the first time. Canada’s highest rankings ever in production was the second largest producer in the world between 1918 and 1923 and was still third after the Second World War. The first large-scale production of automobiles in Canada took place in Walkerville, Ontario, near Windsor, in 1904. In the first year of operations, Gordon McGregor and Wallace Campbell, along with a handful of workmen, produced 117 Ford Model Cs at the Walkerville Wagon Works factory. Toronto’s Russell Motor Car Company began building the Model A in 1904 as well. Canada had their own automakers with Brooks, Redpath, Tudhope, McKay, Galt Gas-Electric, GrayDort, Brockville Atlas, Russell (CCM) and McLaughlin. Brothers Jack and Dan McKay built cars between

1908 and 1914, producing an estimated 125 vehicles. The 1914 Russell is a fine example of one of the most distinctly Canadian cars ever built. Both the car and its engine were designed and built in Canada, something quite rare in the history of automobile manufacturing. This is clearly a luxury vehicle designed with great attention to detail and finished with the finest materials. However, in 1918, McLaughlin was bought by an American firm, General Motors, and was re-branded General Motors of Canada. The cars became known as Buick-McLaughlin models in Canada. In the 1930s, Studebaker built its Rockne line in Canada. Oshawa’s McLaughlin line began building cars based on Buick chassis and engines in 1907. By 1916, a lack of funds forced Russell to sell out to WillysOverland, the company that would go on to build the first Jeep. Then McLaughlin sold to General Motors, with Samuel McLaughlin becoming president of GM Canada in 1918. After the First World War, Canada’s automotive industry had grown into the second largest in the world, up to 1923, although it was still made up of relatively inefficient plants producing many models behind high tariffs. Ford opened an engine plant in Windsor and Chrysler started a vehicle assembly factory that made Plymouth sedans, Dodge hardtops, DeSoto convertibles and Chrysler station wagons and coupes in 1928. After a couple of decades, GM expanded its manufacturing presence in Oshawa and, in 1954, built an engine and transmission plant in St. Catharines that still builds a range of V6s, V8s and six-speed automatic transmissions. Ford started a factory in Oakville that would later house the company’s Canadian headquarters in 1953. Volvo became the first non-USA carmaker to assemble cars in Canada when it opened a factory in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1963. The company built

the facility to get around stiff tariffs on imported goods. It’s the brand’s first plant outside its home country of Sweden. Montreal’s Jacques About debuted his Renault 10-based Manic GT sports car at the Montreal auto show in 1969. However, Manic folded after building just 160 cars when its supply of Renault parts became scarce. The almost-famous Bricklin began producing its wedge-shaped SV-1 in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1974, complete with gull-wing doors, a look that would be adopted a few years later by the Delorean DMC-12. Bricklin went bankrupt less than a year later. Many changes occurred in the ’90s and on to the present date. Talk of moving most of the production to Mexico has the industry in a tailspin as far as building vehicles in Canada in the future.

Canada Day 150 years By Murray Green

Canada Day activities will be partnering with The Bethany Group (Rosehaven Care Centre) and Camrose Car Cruisers to offer a full schedule of fun on July 1. “The theme is Canada 150 and we are looking at diversity. We want to examine what Canada is and choosing to go beyond to acknowledge the age of Canada beyond confederation,” explained Jane Cherry-Lemire, Canada Day committee chair. The Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club will be starting July 1 off with a pancake breakfast. “They haven’t held a breakfast for a couple years, but being a special year, they have agreed to help us out and it has been extended to 8 to 11 a.m.” Opening ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum followed by entertainment, a Queen’s prayer, activities, the Mirror Lake Express train will provide rides, and Odin’s Ravens Viking Group will be setting up camp on site and providing demonstrations. There is also a new giant pyramid for children to play in, stilt walker demonstrations, museum tours and scavenger hunt, a mural unveiling and there will be lots of Camrose Spirals carnival games.

The mural will be unveiled at 2:45 p.m. prior to the serving of cake at 3 p.m. in the fire hall. “We will have characters talk about history and the mural,” said Christie Mason of the committee. The camera club will be taking pictures of people in costumes of early Canada. A toddlers’ corner will provide child care to give people a break to attend activities and to get children out of the sun. The Bethany Group will be inviting the community to share in the historical day. They will be holding an open house and giving tours at the Heritage Building, known to most people as Rosehaven, from 1 to 4 p.m. as part of our 95th anniversary this year. You can tour the tunnels with a guide and learn about our history with displays. “In the evening, there will be a Wild Rose Dance Club event at Mirror Lake Centre at 8 p.m.” said Jane. The band will be the Diamonds. “We encourage people to dress red and white to commemorate Canada Day. I would like a sea of red and white,” added Jane. Should you have any interest in becoming a supporter or volunteer to help set up, contact Jane at 780672-9949.

Summer arts program By Murray Green

The Camrose Arts Society’s Creative Arts Program is returning for a fun-filled program from July 3 to Aug. 25 at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre. The program will be offered during the week (except Aug. 7) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children from six to 12 years of age. Ryan White, program coordinator and Vanguard College student in Edmonton, collected information on last year’s success and has changed a few events to encourage more fun and adventure. “We looked at what worked really well last year, the best crafts and best activities, and then we tried to incorporate as much of those as we could,” Ryan said. “We also saw what things didn’t work and tried to change those. We changed the crafts, so if someone comes who was here last year, they won’t have the same activities.” He is glad to be back at the summer arts program. “I’m excited to see the children again and I really enjoy working with them. It’s super exciting because every day will feature a different theme and crafts. I know that I’m super excited, so I’m hoping they are, too.” Parents can register

their children for the entire program, a month, weeks, or single days to work around holiday schedules. “We encourage people to register early because we can only fit in so many children in a day,” added Ryan. Television game show themes have Ryan excited about the summer. “You’re the next contestant! July 6 will be one of my favourite day because I remember watching the shows when I was young. We’re trying to incorporate some of those games you’d see on the show and have some fun,” he said. Assistant program director Taylor Johnson is an Augustana student who wants to take an after degree program in education. “I like the AbraCadabra Day because we get to see a magic show at the pool. We’re going to try some card tricks and we’re going to be making magic wands and top hats,” said Taylor. The program is based out of the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, but often uses the facilities close by to add to the experience. “We go to Mirror Lake and the spray park, one of my favourites, so it is about adventures and not just crafts. We go to the museum and post office and places like that,” Ryan said. “Everything we do, we

Art, entertainment, fun activities in the park

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The Arts in the Park event held on June 17 around Mirror Lake gave residents of all ages an opportunity to enjoy the workings of local artists, entertainers and fun activities for children. Photos clockwise: Hal Strudwick from Camrose entertained people with a variety of songs. Terry Roth, member of the Mirror Lake Art Club, painted a beautiful oil landscape. Just sitting among the colourful flowers at Mirror Lake made 11-month-old Gretel Olson happy. Steven Hartman on bass violin and Erik Olson on piano had people tapping their toes at the gazebo. There were plenty of activities for the little ones as well. Two-year-old Paisley McArthur gets a balloon rabbit from Wonderstuff Cornelius Copperpot, seated, and Miss Ladybug, background.

Councillor Sears runs for mayor By Lori Larsen

An unexpected turn of events

Canada Day might bring to mind fireworks, barbecues and cake for most, but to me the event makes me think of love, and the unexpected turn of events that take place in our lives. This Canada Day marks 17 years since I became engaged in front of a waterfall, with a tripod set up to catch the moment! My husband jokes that the location was chosen so that he could push me in if I said no. Looking back, it was odd that he seemed upset by the slight splattering of rain on the hike and that he insisted we keep our backpacks on to see the falls instead of dropping them at the campsite first… As a teenager, I fully expected that I would pack my bags and head off to college, where I would meet someone, fall in love and live a life of happiness. Then the summer after high school graduation, the unexpected happened. I met someone. It was on a backpacking trip, organized by a friend, where I met my husband. I recognized him from my Grade 12 English class, where he spent most of his time hitting on a blonde in the front row. I remembered him because he had a confidence that wasn’t typical of most of my classmates, probably cultivated by his year in Australia as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. On that backpacking trip, he only had eyes for…the only other girl on the trip. Also a blonde. Again, an unexpected turn of events! We both returned from the trip to our new jobs at a local grocery store, where this time his sights became focused on me. We were young when we married, but as it turned out, none of the boys at college compared to him. (My parents said “proposed what?” when I told them that he had proposed, and my mum still refers to me as a child bride.) She was surprised that we didn’t wait until my degree was completed before marrying, but again, an unexpected turn of events. We recently watched the movie Passengers which made me begin to think about the strange turns our lives can take. (Doesn’t every lesson worth learning come from a good movie or book?) In the film, passengers Jim (played by Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) are on a journey through space to a new home. Sleeping in a hibernation pod (stay with me here), Jim is awakened 90 years too early when the ship malfunctions. This means that he is destined to live his life out on the ship. After a year, he decides to awaken a beautiful female passenger, Aurora. The two fall in love, and there comes a point where Aurora has the choice of returning to a hibernation state. Talk about an unexpected turn of events! She had planned to awaken on a new planet. But then a twist was thrown her way. Sometimes we can get so set on how we picture something to be, that we can miss out on the beauty that is. She had a choice between returning to her path because that was how she had imagined her life, or she could flow with the wild and unexpected new path her life had taken. Irish poet John O’Donohue sums up this kind of life choice: “I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” It’s the journey and the people we encounter that makes life so enjoyable. Goals are important, but focusing on our goals too much can prevent us from daring to jump at something new that comes up. Taking a chance and trying out something new can lead us to stumble upon new passions, like a career that we didn’t even know could be a career. We are all faced with many choices throughout life about which path to take (minus the hibernation pod part). To leap or to maintain a steady course! To embrace the unexpected or follow the expected path! While many Canadians are watching fireworks displays this Canada Day, I will be reminiscing about the funny ways we find love and the beautiful result of following an unexpected twist of events.

City of Camrose councillor Bill Sears recently announced his intention to run for the candidacy of mayor and is genuinely excited to meet and hear from as many residents as possible during the upcoming campaign. “The highlight of the last four years has been meeting and talking to people,” said Sears. “I want to continue that conversation. I have four and a half months to meet as many people as I can in this community and ask them what do they want to see in this community and what do they want this community to look like in 10, 15 or 25 years?” Sears explained that one of the changes that successful municipalities are experiencing is that of increased density, especially closer to older downtown regions. “We know the City in the future will have to be denser, so what does that mean to our community? How will that look?” Sears mentioned that growing cities, such as Camrose, may have to research and subsequently design transportation systems to accommodate the changing needs of citizens. “We know cities in the future will be designed for other modes of transportation, including public transportation, but will also integrate others, such as walking, cycling, mobility scooters, even the feasibility of autonomous vehicles (driverless vehicles), which we could be looking at in five to 10 years.” Sears also questions what Camrose would be looking like environmentally for the future. “How do we protect the things that people like about our City, such as the greenspaces, clean air and water? How do we develop so that those things are insured and are accessible to everyone, whether living in a suburb or downtown?” In reaching out to City residents, it is important for Sears to hear from all sectors of the community, including young families, and to strive towards representation for the City that is all inclusive. “Camrose has always been, more or less, sold as a bit of a seniors’ town, but I see many young businesspeople, entrepreneurs and families in town. Our schools are full and we just approved a location for a new school. This means our community is growing and growing with young people which is the future of our City,” said Bill, adding it is vital to bring these younger residents into the discussion and determine what they see as the vision for Camrose. On that note, Sears

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City councillor Bill Sears is excited about spending the next four and a half months of his campaign for Camrose Mayor getting out and hearing about residents’ visions for Camrose.

also questioned how young people, specifically women, can be encouraged to get more involved in municipal government including sitting on City council. “We have seen the move towards gender equality at the federal and provincial level, but we haven’t seen it at the municipal level,” he remarked, suggesting the structure and times of Council meetings may need to be re-addressed to accommodate working parents. Sears also said a move towards more regional cooperation, which is being mandated by government, will strengthen the chance of survival for both cities and regions. “It is something that will play to the success of both the region and the City.” When asked about the economic development of Camrose, Sears replied, “It is always a tough thing because every community is chasing the same people (employers, businesses, industry) to come to their community. “We need to look at our strengths, such as the University of Alberta Augustana Campus and our health care and education employers, and ask are there ways to enhance that and help bring people into the community?” Sears added that caution needs to be used as to what type of industry the City attracts. “Much of economic development is what you already have. How do you use it to attract people to your community?” Taking these and other topics to the residents and getting their opinions is the basis behind Sears’ motivation. “I am trying to think of the bigger picture. Camrose is at a bit of a tipping point as to where we want to go and I think it

is important to have these discussions with residents. “Ask them how big do they want Camrose to get, bearing in mind at what point does Camrose lose the small town feel with big city amenities that everyone likes so much.” Fairly new to the community of Camrose himself (2012), Sears stated one of his goals and commitments when he ran for Council was to get out and meet and talk with residents and learn about the community. He realizes the transition from councillor to mayor would entail a more leading role, but that said, it is vital for that leadership position to ensure they are on the same page as council members. “It’s important to get councillors involved and to feel free to express their opinions. “Some of that discussion would be done in public meetings, but some is also done in private, more informal meetings.” Sears envisions council having access to information specialists to present information on a number of topics including transportation needs, climate change, the needs of indigenous people, lower income and other sectors living within communities. “That way, council has a bit better grounding when making decisions while still relying on City staff to keep them informed.” Sears concluded, “Camrose is growing, so we must be doing something right, but we need to know how we can sustain that growth. What is the vision for the future? “I am excited because I have the opportunity in the next four months to ask those kinds of questions of residents and I am excited about being a part of that future and what this City can be.”

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Janine Carroll, left, Jane Cherry-Lemire and Christine Dietz of the A Moment In Time committee show some ideas of what could be placed in the 2017 time capsule.

Camrose and area residents are asked to present artifacts from 2017 to be placed in A Moment In Time Capsule. The time capsule will be placed above ground near City Hall shortly after the end of the year. Artifacts that don’t fit in the capsule, or don’t make it into the container, will be displayed at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. “We thought about different ways to celebrate Canada’s 150. We wanted to open a time capsule that was made 25 years ago on Canada Day. Because we wanted to put the new time capsule where the old one was, we secretly unearthed it,” explained Jane CherryLemire of the A Moment In Time committee. “It was a good thing we did because water had penetrated the capsule for a long time and it was disgusting. We don’t know who was involved in the time capsule. Going forward, we will have a very good record of what is placed in the capsule this time and who was involved.” One of the ideas was to create another time capsule. “My idea was to create some books to go into the capsule,” said Janine Carroll of the committee. “I would like to see scrapbooks and books of what happened this year.” Al Walkey explained that Grade 4 students were asked to contribute to the capsule because they will be around in 50 years to view the unveiling when Canada celebrates 200 years. “We left books to sign and for people to add messages at major events this year. We want people to add pictures. My challenge to people is to send a message to themselves and come back in 50 years to remember what they wrote or submitted,” said Janine. The capsule won’t be sealed on Canada Day. “It is a year-long celebration and our last event is on Dec. 31. We will include things from that event in the capsule,” said Janine. “Malcolm Boyd from the City has asked for a design of a capsule that will be filled with nitrogen to preserve its contents,” shared Al. “We are pitching the idea to the Camrose Composite High School to make the capsule. It will be about two feet by four feet for the dimensions.” Items with 2017 dated on them would be ideal. The deadline for submissions will be Dec. 1, unless the event falls after that date. People can contact Downtown Camrose to offer ideas or send artifacts. Contact Al at 780-672-5191 or stop in at 5051-50 Street between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
