In the fall of 2010 the Camrose United Church Social Concerns Committee brainstormed ways to convert their spacious, “water-drinking” lawn into an alternative purpose – something that would help the broader community, including the Camrose Food Bank. This session lead to a hedgerow of black currents, and above-ground vegetable boxes. This produce grown on the Church property has been donated locally. Some products have been sold by donation after church and the “Annual Fall Harvest Sale” proceeds from remaining goods will be donated to the Camrose Food Bank, which is operated by NeighborAid. Last year, a labyrinth was added to the northwest corner of the grounds. Volunteers from the Church have expanded the initiative with yet another tier of creativity and progress this year – a new meditative garden currently being developed for the benefit of the congregation and the general public. Located on the west side of the large property, apple trees and saskatoon bushes have been added. The collective project has been created in the hopes of using space more appropriately, offering beauty and peace, while helping people less fortunate.
