Mad Malcolm Buckaroo Boyd

Marilou Yampolsky, Ruby Red Lipstick Gang

Long-Arm Sheriff Isaac Verbaas

Mad Malcolm Buckaroo Boyd, Marilou Yampolsky (of the notorious Ruby Red Lipstick Gang) and Long-arm Sheriff Isaac Verbaas were picked up mid-morning yesterday, Monday, July 24th. Camrose Police Service Constable Kelly Bauer, in an unprecedented brave and historic act of local police work at it’s finest, arrested the trio as they exited The Lefse House, just west of the heart of Downtown Camrose. Bauer, on routine patrol, instantly recognized the fidgety and nervous-looking crime-spree suspects. With no time for back-up, the veteran police officer single-handedly arrested the three. Boyd, Yampolsky and Verbaas, each with a notable record in the community, will have a lot of explaining and begging to do if they are to escape a long period behind bars. Jail and Bail is set for Wednesday, August 2 with Judge Lucas Banack presiding. For information you simply must know, kindly refer to page 4 of this edition.

Juggling hectic work weeks, owning your own business and raising two little boys is more than a full time job, but this busy mom and business owner wouldn’t have it any other way. Creative by nature, Heather always knew her calling was in the beauty industry. She notes, “The beauty industry is a fabulous way to showcase creative energy. I wanted a career that was positive, upbeat and makes people feel beautiful. I love to inspire!” Heather moved to Alberta shortly after her training at Marvel school in Ottawa, and has been a journeyman stylist at Inspirations Salon & Spa ever since. Five years ago, she had the opportunity to purchase the business she had put so much time into. While owning a business isn’t an easy job, Heather is quick to credit her wonderful staff and clientele for making it successful. She’s learned, “Trust your first instinct and never stop learning. Challenges make us who we are – and always stay true to who you are.” Heather has recently decided to consolidate both salons into the Camrose Resort Casino location, and offers a full range of spa and salon services. An AVEDA concept salon and spa, Inspirations carries luxurious, natural, eco-friendly body, hair and make-up products for the discerning consumer. Heather notes, “You don’t just come to Inspirations for a service, you come to us for an experience.”

ATB Financial fourth annual Jail and Bail helps community By Murray Green

Find your happy place

I closed my eyes tight and tried to conjure up my happy place. Any number of different locations could have come to mind, but what I thought of immediately was the beach on the island Pulau Pangkor, Malaysia where my husband and I spent Christmas almost 10 years ago. I could see the shimmering green islands in the distance, the rough sand at my feet, the tropical trees offering shade overhead. I wasn’t actually in Malaysia, but thinking of places where we have made happy memories is a powerful experience. I was actually sitting at the doctor’s office a few years ago, having a disconcerting mole removed, when I pictured this happy beach scene. Who knew it was my happy place! But there it was, vivid in my mind, ready for me to leap to when facing pain. (Until I underwent the trauma that is childbirth, my most painful experience had been getting my ears pierced in Grade 6. I asked the ear piercer not to pierce the second ear, but my mom insisted that they complete the job.) This was the same island where we stared incomprehensibly at food signs, then pored over our guide books to learn the words for rice, chicken and pork. “Nasi goreng cina” suddenly meant chicken fried rice! We were at the beginning of a five-month adventure in Southeast Asia, and at the middle point of our year of travel. We had freshly arrived through Singapore after two months of touring Australia, and were feeling a bit out of our element when we arrived at the ferry crossing. We were arriving at Christmastime and there was tension in the air as the rumour spread that there were few guest houses still available. Once on the island as we prepared to hop out of our taxi, we paused to thumb through our guide book to learn how to say ‘thank you’ in this new country. Our driver, thinking we were confused about what the next step was in this driving process, said to us in a gruff, serious tone: “You pay … get out.” This has since become a much-loved phrase in our family. I’ve been thinking about our happy places and how summer is a wonderful time to become reacquainted with our happy places and to discover new ones. Two years ago, we discovered a new canoeing area with interconnected lakes, clean water for swimming and beaches to camp along. As we got settled at the campground and raced to check out the beach area, I approached a tree. Not just any tree, but a behemoth of a tree. As I craned my neck up to the top, I just had this sense that I would see more of this tree. A lot more. This summer will be the third year in a row that we venture to this happy place. I face summers with a bit of trepidation now; it seems like such a short time to pack in as much fun and memories as possible before school begins once again. But to picture it as a time to find your happy place makes it sound more like a natural unfurling of time. A time for unwinding and getting reacquainted with a slower pace. I recently came across a page from the book Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed, which I had photocopied. She is talking about the need for balance in life when she writes, “Let’s listen to our bodies breathe, let’s take a few conscious steps per day, let’s smile, let’s spend a few minutes looking at the clouds, greet a passerby, touch the bark of a tree.” She goes on to suggest leaving “spaces where you could be alone, breathe, make your heart laugh, feel your blood travel throughout your body.” This gave me pause; I mean, how often do we add to our summer to-do list “touch the bark of a tree” or “make my heart laugh”? But yet that is the heart of what summer should be. Exploring, discovering, treasuring. Being still. Living. I went out for what a friend of mine calls a “sanity run” in the pasture the other evening. I stretched my legs out in one of my all-time favourite happy places, the trails on the family farm. I even touched the bark of a tree.

ATB Financial staff in Camrose have been arresting people for four years to help the community during the annual Jail and Bail event. This year, the action will occur on Wednesday, Aug. 2 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bailey Theatre. The action begins at 8 a.m. with a free community breakfast for the entire family at the theatre. Music will be provided by the Bailey Buckaroos. Then at 9:15 a.m., the outlaw round-up begins. Arresting officer Constable Kelly Bauer will bring a long list of outlaws to Judge Lucas Banack for sentencing. The list of outlaws includes Long-arm Sherriff Isaac Verbaas, the Ruby Red Lipstick Gang from Coldwell Banker (Glenda Strauss, Marilou Yampolsky, Joanie Johnson and Jessie Puddicombe), Sharp Shooter Shane Gau, Mad Malcolm Buckaroo Boyd, Les Pistol Pete Parsons, Ghost Rider Don Gregorwich, Uffda Aggie Agnes Hoveland, Mean Maverick Carman Mason, Colleen the Cruel Nelson, Dastardly Dave Roth and Hang ’em High Harry Gaede. The event is sponsored by ATB Financial and the proceeds from the Jail and Bail go to the Bailey Theatre and Camrose Sea Serpents Swim Club. The Bailey Theatre is truly all community owned. Alberta’s oldest performing arts theatre, the Bailey Theatre Society is a volunteer group of over 100 with an elected board of 15, all committed to improving cultural,

educational and entertainment opportunities for the citizens of Camrose and surrounding area. The Camrose Swim Club (Sea Serpents) is a not-for-profit competitive summer swim club run by volunteers and supported by membership and fundraising. During the past five decades, the Camrose Sea Serpents has grown to be one of the largest local non-profit community groups with over 80 swimmers and from over 50 families. “ATB Camrose is honored to be able to act as a catalyst to help bring these two local charities together with our local businesses as our outlaws and you in our community to help raise money for such amazing programs,” said Stacey Siminick, ATB assistant branch manager. “This year, with your support and donations to the Outlaw Round Up, our goal is to have helped raise $20,000 for the Bailey Theatre and Camrose Swim Club. This money will go towards a variety of programs that will in return help build a stronger, more vibrant community.” The scene at the Bailey Theatre will include an old-fashioned courtroom where outlaws will be rounded up to stand trial for their crimes and try to make their bail (your generous pledges). “We are so excited to be partnering with the Bailey Theatre this year and thrilled to be able to provide a free pancake breakfast,” said an excited Stacey. “People ask us why we do this? Well, I can’t think

BUSTED

of a better way to kick off Big Valley Jamboree than with free pancakes, outlaws and amazing local entertainment. The Outlaw Roundup has quickly become a BVJ tradition here at ATB. We have an incredible team in Camrose that helps make this event a true success. It’s an amazing way for us be able to give back and have fun doing it,” Stacey added. ATB Financial has been supporting community-based charities and initiatives in Alberta for over 75 years. In 2016 alone, that meant thousands of volunteer hours and $4.4 million given back to Alberta through donations and fundraising. In Camrose, the tradition is no different with ATB sponsoring and volunteering for a variety of local community groups and initiatives on an ongoing basis. Most notably, over the last six years ATB Financial has been a sponsor of Big Valley Jamboree. The Camrose branch is very proud to have helped raise and donate over $200,000 for important community programs including Camrose and District Neighboraid Center Food Bank, Sparling School Christmas Dinner, Christmas Adopt-aFamily, Toques and Mitts Program, The Open Door Association, Centra Cam, Habitat for Humanity, Camrose Boys and Girls Club, Kodiaks Game Day Sponsor, Camrose Women’s Shelter, Teddy 4 a Toonie, Tour of Alberta, Camrose Bull Congress, Camrose 4-H and Courtland’s Hope.

County drowning By Lori Larsen On July 22 at approximately 8 p.m. Camrose RCMP responded to a complaint of a male who was last seen in the water at the Camrose County Nature Conversation pond. Several agencies assisted in the search for the 25-yearold male from Camrose but he was not located that evening. On July 23 at 10 a.m., with the efforts of an underwater dive team, the body of the male was recovered in the pond and he was confirmed deceased. An autopsy is scheduled at the Officer of the Medical Examiner in Edmonton, however, preliminary investigation reveals nothing suspicious about this tragic occurrence.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson A cup of kindness

Last year at about this time, my home and office were moving to a new location (one that was being renovated), and a third location was being prepared for rental. Over several weeks, things were being moved into the new combined work/home location from three other locations, plus new furniture was also being delivered. Meanwhile, the renovation ran into snags and took six weeks longer than expected. Instead of moving into a clear empty space, the home and office were being moved into a construction zone. It was chaotic–complete disruption to both domestic and work life. Besides the chaos, I noticed something else: kindness. ***

Family and friends arrived to help in ways I expected and ways I could never have predicted. I am eternally grateful–and not surprised. That’s the kind of people they are. What I also began to notice was the kindness of strangers. As we began moving in boxes from the three other locations, workmen still finishing parts of the renovation arranged to have as much of their mess as possible out of the way, and made sure space was cleared for the boxes coming from other locations. Later, people delivering new furniture took outdoor footwear off at the door, made sure everything they delivered was properly set up, cleaned up the mess involved in unpacking, and even phoned later to check that all was in order. In the building to which I was moving, every time we arrived with another load, people we didn’t know would say, “Can I hold the door for you?” “Can I help you with that?” My family and friends noticed too. It seemed like we were surrounded by considerate people. In a stressful chaotic time, those acts of kindness made a challenging time easier – not just the logistics, but also the emotional and mental impact of all that chaos. ***

I thought of that as I read an article by Dr. Travis Bradberry, “Powerful Habits of Considerate People.” He said that our instinct to be considerate is even stronger than our instinct to be self-serving. Kindness and being considerate of others is an integral part of being human. Recent neuroscience explains why. According to Bradberry, research by Dacher Keltner at Berkely showed that our brains react the same way when we see other people in pain as when we experience pain ourselves. Seeing someone else experience pain activates the brain structure that’s responsible for nurturing behaviour. During my chaotic time of moving last year, I was keenly aware of how beneficial it was for me to be surrounded by kindness and consideration. What I hadn’t thought of was something pointed out in Bradberry’s article: being considerate is good for the person being considerate. Bradberry says, “When you show kindness and consideration for others, the brain’s reward center is triggered. That elevates the feel-good chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin and endogenous opioids. All of that gives you a great feeling, similar to what’s known as ‘runner’s high.’ All that oxytocin is good for your heart too.”

I just wanted to send a note to thank all of the amazing volunteers it must have taken to put on the soccer provincials this past weekend! We travelled from Linden to spend the weekend in Camrose as our daughter was invited to play with the U18 Carstairs team. We also watched our local U14 Acme/Linden girls team play their heart out. Our experience in your community was wonderful. The hospitality was amazing. The fields looked great. We were very impressed and know how hard everyone must have worked. On a side note we also loved how beautiful your city is—we couldn’t get over all the lovely green spaces and how everyone’s yards were so neat and tidy! You all should be very proud of your community! Jamie Collins, Linden

Great entertainment

Forget about social media, The Camrose Booster is where it’s at when it comes

to debate on issues! I find myself eager to open up the Booster every week to see what’s going to be said in the editorial, how many get offended by it, and eagerly read the back and forth week by week to see how it unfolds. Unlike social media where discussions all to often go off the rails, these Booster editioral debates only go off the rails somewhat, and it’s very entertaining, sometimes funny, sometimes cringe-worthy. Keep it coming Camrose! Bobby Wells, Camrose Who is safe

The AHS July 11 article “Keep Kids safe on the farm” simply repeats a decade-old old PC message. Farm-related kids’ farm fatality statistics have proven the current approach to be ineffective. At least 12 children have died on Alberta farms since 2010; roughly 110 have died since 1985! Alberta Agriculture and the chief medical officer no longer even report childhood farm-related fatalities, so we have no accurate way of knowing how many children lose their lives on farms annually. If any other travesty annually took this many innocent childrens’ lives, Alberta Health would be doing much more than recycling age-old advice. It would declare a health crisis and immediate remediation would follow. Eight children died on Alberta farms in 2008

alone! A cost-free solution, one that would prevent these fatalities, has been available since 2009, when CASA posted effective /user-friendly Mic Safety Kids’ Farm Safety education Fact and Activity Sheets on their federal website www.casa-acsa.ca. Alberta Health, Education, and Agriculture ministers have, however, been disinterested in saving kids’ lives on Alberta farms. That makes this July AHS column disingenuous. Had “Farm safety education” been included within the existing Elementary Health and Wellness Program of Studies, alongside the existing fire, personal, street, bike/helmet safety instructions years ago, innumerable lives could have been saved. Kids learn all these other safety strategies, and learn to make safer decisions. This could likewise be true of “farm safety” education if Minister Eggen didn’t continue to ignore this problem and its solution. Alberta children continue to pay the ultimate price. Bill 6, the purported “Farm Safety” Bill, has done absolutely nothing to improve safety on Alberta farms. It merely provides compensation to the victims’ families after the fatality. Farm safety for kids on Alberta farms is still a desperate need...and could be achieved. M. R. Leithead, Bawlf

Unkindness and rudeness and inconsideration are noisier and get more mass media attention than the millions of acts of kindness and consideration that happen every day. All that noise, all those images, can make us believe unkindness is normal and typical behaviour. It’s not. We are hard-wired to be kind to one another. It’s not just your mother or your spiritual leader saying, “Be kind to others,” because it’s the right thing to do. It’s neuroscience! As Bradberry concludes, “Being considerate is good for your mental and physical health, your career, and everyone around you. On top of that, it just feels good.” I love it when hard science catches up to what human nature has known all along–being kind is good for us. Regardless of how it may appear on mass media, kindness comes naturally to most of us, most of the times. Reassuring! ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com and I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Q.

When can a scratch be buffed out?

A:

When the sun catches the angle jjust right, you may start noticing small scratches on your vehicle, s annoying little marks that detract a from the gleam of your ride. It’s frustrating, but there’s good news: the pros at the Auto Shoppe can get bring back that pristine look. Generally, there are two kinds of scratches: ones that are shallow and can be buffed and ones that are deeper and require more attention. If you run your fingernail over the scratch and can feel a groove, then it’s probably too deep to power polish. A scratch you can feel with your fingernail requires more work: sanding, degreasers and body prep solvents need to be applied. Once the scratch has been fully prepared, touch up paint can be carefully applied and feathered into the existing paint so that it appears as seamless as possible. It’s not a perfect solution, but it will protect your vehicle from dreaded rust, which starts as soon as air meets bare steel. Rust never sleeps. That one tiny mark, if bare steel is exposed to air will eventually become a rusty eyesore. Treat those scratches with care and attention. If you have any questions, bring your vehicle in to the Auto Shoppe. We would be happy to give you a free estimate.

Q.

Do I need travel insurance?

A:

Travel insurance is not mandatory, but b we heartily recommend it. The pproper policy represents peace of mind wherever your vacation or business w ttrip takes you. Health coverage almost always jumps to mind when clients think of protection. We highly endorse a great policy from a reputable underwriter, particularly when leaving the country. There are too many horror stories of unimaginable hospital costs when people have experienced illness or an accident abroad. Medical insurance can even cover the cost of cremating and transporting your remains if you pass while on vacation. We offer professional advice, great rates and appropriate levels of coverage for other travel surprises. A trip cancellation policy can cover airfare, hotel and attraction ticket costs in the event of a non-pre-existing emergency. Flight delay and lost baggage insurance is popular and recommended. (Airlines, generally, are not required to compensate passengers for weather delays). This insurance will cover your hotel, meal costs and unexpected expenses. We can also offer rental car travel insurance, flight accident coverage, and other policy types. Eliminating your travel stress is as important to us as providing you with recommendations for a great holiday.

Q. A:

What should I expect when visiting a new stylist?

The initial consultation is extremely important for you and your sstylist. Come to your appointment with yyour hair styled as you normally wear it. Even if you are planning on radically changing your look, it’s still important for your stylist to see your current style in regards to thickness, texture and the natural patterns of your hair. Explain what you would like done and why. Be specific and bring pictures of styles you like. Also make sure to tell your stylist about your color history and products you use on your hair. Some products do not mix well, and failing to tell your stylist about your previous product history could be damaging to your hair or cause breakage. Be upfront about what you know works for your lifestyle. How much time are you willing to spend daily on your hair? How often are you willing to return for appointments? A high maintenance style may not work for someone who isn’t willing to spend the time maintaining it. It’s also very important that a style you leave the salon in, is a look you can replicate at home. Answer provided by:

Although lawns can handle this type of drought for a few weeks, a lawn should not be dry for an extended period of time. A long drought can kill the lawn, and a brown lawn is pretty unsightly! The first course of action which likely comes to mind is watering. It is important to know that watering frequently for short periods of time is not terribly effective. Light watering can lead to a shallow root system. Instead, opt to give your lawn a good soak once or twice a week. This will strengthen and deepen the roots. Consider watering your lawn in the early morning for the best water retention and give your lawn about an inch of water each time. Doing this once or twice a week should bring your lawn back to that lush green that you may have had a few weeks ago. Be sure not to mow your lawn too short during the summer! A cutting height of 3 to 3.5 inches is optimal to retain moisture in the leaf structure and the root system.

A general contractor is responsible for providing all of the material, labor, and equipment necessary for a construction project as well as hiring sspecialized contractors (electrician, plumber, drywaller, etc.) for the project. Benefits of having a general contractor include: Less stress for the homeowner – Booking specialized contractors and ordering materials is time intensive. Other trades need to be booked, and in a timely fashion, so the project stays on budget and on track. As an insider in the industry, your general contractor already knows many specialized contractors in the construction trade. When acting as the general contractor on a job, I will only hire quality contractors that I would trust to do work in my own home. Quality Materials – We have the experience to know which materials work best for various applications. What works well in one situation, may not be the best choice for another. As well, we do not use product and materials in a client’s home that we would not use in our own. Getting Permit Approvals and Inspections completed on time.

How does the share program work at Vision Credit Union?

A:

When you, as a member, count on Vision CU for your deposits, loans or mortgage, you will be rewarded dearly. Not just by awesome service, a government-backed guarantee of your money and local decision-making for rates. You will also start accumulating common shares based on your deposit interest earned or loan interest paid. You automatically share in the profit of Vision CU. This is called equity allocation. Yearly the Board, which oversees operation of Vision CU, will decide an additional allocation of common shares to members’ common share accounts based on our profit. In recent years this has been approximately 25% annually – an amazing bonus for our 23,000 member-owners. Members continue to be richly rewarded as their common shares accumulate. There is one more annual bonus, too. Each fall, the Board and management declare a cash payout to members – also profit based. For many years this reward has been a cheque which reflects 10% of the accumulated dollar amount in a members’ common share account. ($30,000 in common shares = $3000 cheque to spend as one pleases!) No other financial institution offers this level of reward! Answer provided by:

Dedicated service to customer building needs By Ron Pilger In March of 1971, an enthusiastic young fellow, with those infamous Scandinavian values of hard work and dedicated service, landed a delivery driver job at Imperial Lumber in Camrose. Recognizing that this local farm boy had an exceptional talent, within a year or so, Terry Nordin was asked to join Wayne Gaalaas and Cliff Paulson in working for them at a brand new independently owned lumber yard – Battle River Builders Supplies. (This company was sold to Revelstoke Lumber in 1974.) In 1977, another new lumber yard sprung up in Camrose: Builders Supplies Camrose Ltd. In a wise career move, Terry joined the duo of Wayne Gaalaas and Wilf Dyer. Terry’s duties were “anything and everything” – counter sales, preparing customer estimates, mixing paint, stocking shelves and ensuring that the lumber yard was full of inventory. It was a combination of new business and entrepreneurship at its best! In time, staff was added, duties became more specific to individuals and Terry’s time was increasingly channeled more into the role of choosing the right construction materials and lumber for the growing business. With a thorough understanding of clients’ needs and a unique, personal way of interacting with contractors, tradespeople and fellow staff, Terry became manager of the business 10 years later. Wayne Gaalass made a decision in 1992 to sell the Builders Supplies property to Beaver Lumber (a Molson company) and purchased the Beaver Lumber franchise in Camrose. In 1993, Rob Hauser (a friend, co-worker and a longtime experienced lumber man) then purchased this franchise from Wayne, where Terry remained. In 2000, Home Hardware Corporation purchased all Beaver Lumber stores across Canada. With Rob at the helm, Terry continued his role with various duties until he assumed the lumber buying position that he holds today. It is a role that Terry has tackled with determination, pride and respect until his retirement at the end of this month. That will be forty-six years in the trade! When asked what Terry will miss about his career, he’s quick to respond: “Everything.” Pushed to elaborate, he talks about

Ron Pilger, Camrose Booster Terry Nordin has served Camrose and area building customers for more than 45 years.

enjoying working alongside so many talented people, assisting clients and career contractors, and doing business with his supplier’s network – many of whom have become good friends. “It’s amazing as I have dealt with some distributors and vendors for over three decades. There are certain brokers that I talk with every day. I can’t imagine how much business I have done with some companies.” If it had been tracked, it would be an impressive number of semi-truckloads full of building materials that he has brought into their yard! Terry reminisces about how much the hardware and lumber business has changed for his four-and-ahalf decades of commendable service: “Things have changed considerably in the last 15 years in dealing with company reps. Sometimes a large part of my day would be talking with people who represent their companies, making presentations on their new products for our store to buy. Now, I spend much of my day negotiating on the phone. It’s not nearly as personal.” Terry reminisces, “Products and building codes have changed immensely over the years, too. More focus is being put on energy conservation. It’s amazing to see new products come to market which has made such an incredible difference for consumers. I see this trend accelerating even more.”

So, what is next for an outgoing, upbeat, easy-toget-along-with, accommodating professional who has rarely missed a day of work? Terry and his wife Marilyn have recently bought and moved into a home in the Valleyview subdivision. Leaving the countryside near Miquelon Lake where he spent his first sixty-odd years as a farm boy was something he thought he would never likely do. “I’ve got some yardwork and some basement finishing work ahead which I look forward to completing”, he says with a smile. “We are very close to our children and grandchildren, so having some freedom to be with them will be a treat. But what I really look forward to is this – doing things on the spur of the moment. If I decide to go golfing, I can. We enjoy camping, so we expect to do a lot more of that. I want to renew some old friendships – people I once went to school with or whom I have previously worked with. That will be fun!” “But I know for a fact that I will miss the customers, Rob and the entire Home Hardware family. That’s the part that will be most difficult to replace.” As is Terry Nordin, a guy who made a difference. Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? Let us know. HE’S GOT IT

Murray Green, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer convinced children at the Camrose Public Library who’s still got it during a book reading on July 11. He read the book King of the Zoo by Erica S. Perl with six-year-old Russell King, from the County, listening closely by his side.

During the regular council meeting held on July 4, City of Camrose councillors voted in favour of a motion that the City of Camrose approach Camrose County to renegotiate the Water Supply Agreement for the Hamlet of Ohaton. The negotiation would specifically target property assessment revenue for additional commercial connections and that the negotiations should take place within the next 30 days. The motion came as a result of a request from Camrose County for an additional water commercial use connection under the existing Ohaton Water Supply Agreement which was presented for review during the June 12 committee of whole meeting. Under the existing agreement, the supply of water is limited to residential. The request for an amendment to the existing contract was to include an additional connection and commercial use purposes. Fred Wildeman, owner of Battle River Transit Mix addressed council during a public hearing at the regular meeting on July 4 presenting his reasoning for supporting the request from the County for an additional connection and inclusion of commercial usage to include his business. Wildeman began by informing council that he, himself, is a resident of Camrose along with all but two of his employees and, that through his business, he spends roughly $250,000 to $300,000 on fuel every year, and $80,000 this year at Glover International. “I am in the County (business), but I am a big supporter of the town (Camrose).” In describing the water quality at his business, Wildeman said, “The water quality out there is very poor. I could drill wells, but may not get enough water to supply me out there.” Councillor Kevin Hycha inquired as to where Wildeman presently gets his water supply. “It comes out of a lagoon across the road and it is just filthy, dirty water. It is very hard on boilers and steamers.” Councillor Bill Sears asked Wildeman the approximate water consumption of his business. Wildeman replied, “It would be approximately 350,000 gallons (1,324 m³) annually depending on how busy we are, that could vary 50,000 gallons. “I would be open to putting in a bigger tank so I would have bigger capacity and it would fill overnight so there is not so much draw on the peak time.” Sears asked Wildeman if his business serviced contractors in Camrose.

“Yes, we service lots of contractors in town.” Wildeman indicated he would be more than willing to work with the City of Camrose in any capacity. Discussion

City Manager Malcolm Boyd indicated the current Ohaton Water Supply Agreement has 29 connections (residential use) plus Cargill Canola crush plant (included in an amendment in Oct. 2013 to the original agreement) and that the requested amendment would change it to include commercial use and 30 connections. Councillor Wayne Throndson spoke against providing additional water connection to County commercial users. “I might be convinced to change my opinion if we had an all-encompassing agreement with the County that provided some benefit to the citizens of Camrose. If we were to have some form of profit sharing or tax sharing with the County, I would be far more willing, but to merely allow another commercial connection on the Ohaton waterline makes no sense to me.” Throndson noted that the water supply agreement with the Hamlet of Ohaton is a two-party agreement including the City and the County and, that even by motion, the City cannot unilaterally change the agreement. It would require negotiation with the County (administration and council on both parties’ part) to change the wording. Councillor Sears pointed out that he felt there is more to the issue than just assessment. “Mr. Wildeman stated these businesses bring much to the City (Camrose) besides assessment. They bring business to our other businesses and provide service to our contractors.” Mayor Norm Mayer commented on the request. “We have the maintenance of the cost of operating and maintaining water plants and waste water treatment plants and our only source of funding for that is our tax base in the city of Camrose, which is primarily residential. “I don’t have any problem in opening up and renegotiating this agreement, but being specific in what we will include. The requested extension for Battle River Transit Mix should be subject to a revenue-sharing agreement of 25 per cent of taxes for each year on an ongoing basis.” Mayor Mayer further explained a possible agreement. “I think we have to enter into a revenue sharing agreement where we are providing a service that is costing us something to provide in addition to whatever small markup for water. We have to have some commitment to maintenance and rehabilitation of those plants.”

Trudeau’s secret payout, apology By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot Everywhere that I go in Battle River-Crowfoot, constituents are making sure that, as their Member of Parliament, I know their opinion that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s secret payment and apology to convicted terrorist Omar Khadr is wrong. Our democracy and freedom of speech is a main part of what terrorists in many places around the world abhor about our western values. I thank everyone who has contacted me to express their view, as always. Prime Minister Trudeau’s government has paid millions of taxpayer dollars in compensation to Khadr. The Liberal government refuses to tell Canadians just how much of our money has been given to him. Conservatives believe that it is one thing to acknowledge alleged mistreatments by other countries, but it is another to secretly award a convicted terrorist who murdered an allied soldier-medic. This was Trudeau’s choice and he is responsible for the decision. The Supreme Court of Canada did not instruct the Prime Minister of Canada to give one cent to Khadr. Repatriation was the proper remedy to the Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling on the violation of Khadr’s charter rights and that’s why Conservatives brought him back to Canada. Many folks believe that Khadr’s pursuit of this matter through the courts since his return to Canada is a measure of his lack of gratitude and continued feeling of contempt for western values. The secret nature of Trudeau’s deal may thwart legal efforts to ensure Khadr is required to pay any money to his victim’s widow and two children. Many consider Trudeau’s choice as an act of disrespect to the men and women in Canada’s military, and the nations and military personnel allied with Canada. Together, we fight terrorism and our military personnel face incredible danger every day in this on-going battle. When a Canadian soldier is killed or injured in battle, the Government of Canada provides a lump sum payment up to a maximum of $360,000. Despite this, the Liberal government is willing to provide millions of dollars and apologize to a convicted terrorist who actively sought to kill Canadian and allied soldiers. Our thoughts continue to be with Sergeant Christopher Speer’s widow and family, who must relive their ordeal every time this issue comes up in the media. Given Mr. Khadr’s admission of guilt, Conservatives are calling on him to give any settlement money to Speer’s family. Trudeau claims that when the Chretien-Martin Liberal governments violated Khadr’s charter rights, “we all end up paying for it”. He is saying that his father’s charter implies all Canadians share in the guilt of the Chretien-Martin governments, so all Canadians must pay. As Prime Minister, Trudeau made sure Canadians paid millions of taxpayer dollars and apologized to the convicted terrorist whose charter rights were violated. The vast majority of Canadians continue to think this is wrong. Cummings gets up close By Murray Green

Canadian music legend Burton Cummings has always had his own way to rock. Now he will get Up Close and Alone with the local fans in a concert on Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre beginning at 8 p.m. “Burton Cummings’ musical creations continue to resonate with fans both old and new. His voice is considered to be one of the finest in rock music and he has continued to uphold this impressive reputation as performer, singer, songwriter and recording artist. I’m so excited we were able to get him to come to Camrose,” said Lougheed Centre manager Nick Beach. “This is the biggest name in music to perform at the centre.” Burton Cummings is that rare artist who has transcended time, genres and generations with a body of work that continues to resonate with fans both old and new. His voice has been rated among the finest in rock music and his extensive catalogue of songs is the envy of his contemporaries. Burton continues at the top of his game as a performer, singer, songwriter and recording artist second to none. “I’m reading his list of hits and you forget how big of a deal he is in Canadian music. He is a voice for several generations and he just keeps on going. His voice and piano playing is as good now as it ever was.

He is still spot on,” said Nick. His set for this tour will be as energy-packed as any other, even though the music icon is now 69. “When the opportunity presented itself to get him here, I hardly paused. His tour will not be involving big cities. I think he is coming here, Red Deer and Medicine Hat,” said Nick. Burton is one of the most celebrated rock artists in Canadian music history. Beyond his many awards, accolades and accomplishments, he is also unquestionably Canada’s most beloved rock and roll son. How many Canadian rock stars can boast both a community centre and a performing arts theatre named in their honor? Yet Burton also enjoys a worldwide stature shared by only a handful of other Canadian artists. “We have never added a new show this early. It was an opportunity that we couldn’t pass up. Camrose fans will be able to be up close and alone with Burton Cummings,” he added. By 1970, The Guess Who had sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry combined to that point and their achievements remain unparalleled. “We now have two iconic bands playing in our theatre a week apart from each other. That’s huge for us and Camrose,” he said of the fact the Barenaked Ladies will be here as well. “That show sold out in an hour and 15 minutes. This

HOBO DAY

will be even a bigger show for certain generations.” The Guess Who recorded mega hits, starting in 1969, with songs such as “These Eyes,” “No Time,” “American Woman,” “Albert Flasher” and “Clap for the Wolfman” with Cummings as the writer or co-writer on the hits. In 1971, The Guess Who received the key to the City of Indianapolis, even though they were Canadians. In 1976, Cummings’ solo career skyrocketed. He had major hits with “Stand Tall,” “I’m Scared”, “Break It To Them Gently” and “My Own Way To Rock.” His 1978 album Dream Of A Child became the first quadruple platinum-selling album by a Canadian artist. Cummings was an original member of The Guess Who who received two Juno awards in the ’70s. After going solo, he added three more Juno awards. The Guess Who were also named to the Juno Hall of Fame. He launched his acclaimed Up Close and Alone solo concert series featuring the singer alone on stage recounting the stories behind his bestknown songs and sharing personal moments from his career. After all these years, he has nothing to prove to anyone, except himself. With Burton Cummings, there has always been one constant: he remains true to himself and his own way to rock.

Swea Ladies celebrate 74 year reunion By Murray Green

The Swea Ladies Group was formed in 1943 and to mark the special occasion of reaching 74 years, held a reunion luncheon at the Camrose Golf Course on June 13. The reunion attracted 15 ladies, nine of whom are current members. The rest were past members. In early years the club supported the Red Cross, as well as assist in welfare work whereever needed. The group has remained together socially, even though they are not as active today. The reunion was also a tribute to Joyce Meadahl who initiated the event, but since passed. “We miss you Joyce,” they all said at the luncheon. The welfare group, as they were known at that time, was formed with nine members and the group still currently has nine members.

Resident and family experiences with designated supportive living facilities vary greatly across the province. Finding the right place for you, or loved ones is a huge task for families during a stressful time. Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) released its 2016 designated supportive living resident and family experience survey results. The results are presented in two provincial reports, the Designated Supportive Living Resident Experience Survey Report and the Designated Supportive Living Family Experience Survey Report, published on the HQCA’s website. The council provided individualized reports to each participating facility about the unique experiences of their residents and family members. This includes five Camrose locations. Bethany Meadows, Faith House, Sunrise Village Camrose, Viewpoint and Memory Lane. The reports capture the voice of 7,400 Albertans who rely on care from designated supportive living (4,600 family members; 2,800 residents). “The HQCA has a legislated mandate to use surveys to provide a voice for Albertans about their health care experiences,” said Andrew Neuner, HQCA CEO. “We objectively report the input we receive with the intention to honour those voices by influencing the healthcare system in a meaningful way.” Most notably, the survey

Pre-planning also ensures your final arrangements will be carried out according to your exact wishes, in a cost-sensitive manner. results demonstrated that across designated supportive living facilities in Alberta, not all residents and family members experience the same quality of care. For individual facilities, residents’ rating of their overall care experience ranged from six to 9.6 out of 10 and family members’ rating of overall care experience ranged from 6.7 to 9.8 out of 10. “While residents at some facilities experience exceptional care, residents at other facilities have experiences that are less than ideal,” said Neuner. “Those facilities with high scores demonstrate that it is possible for residents and families to have very positive experiences. “We are calling on designated supportive living provider organizations across the province, Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health to come together and act on these survey results and provide residents with the best experience possible.” It is time to act on the survey. “Given the high response rate to this survey, it is clear that residents and their fami-

lies want the HQCA to share and report on their experiences,” said Geralyn L’Heureux, chair, of the patient safety advisory panel. “It is fundamental to residents’ overall quality of life, and to quality improvement, that the different organizations involved in designated supportive living care and services listen to and respond to the experiences of residents and their families.” The surveys ask residents and family members questions about a number of factors that reflect their experiences with care and services. These include a global overall care rating, whether or not the respondent would recommend the facility, experiences with food, and experiences on various other dimensions of care, such as: staffing, care of belongings and environment; employee responsiveness; communication with management; and, activities. Survey highlights include on a scale of 100, individual facility’s survey scores on residents’ experiences related to meals and dining range from 59 to 93. Survey scores on

residents’ experiences related to communication with staff range from 60 to 99. Sunrise Village Camrose received the highest ranking of the local facilities by residents. Scores on family members’ experiences related to staffing, care of belongings, and the environment range from 59 to 95. Experiences related to kindness and respect range from 65 to 100. Faith House in Camrose received the highest local rankings by families. All five Camrose facilities were in the top 25 out of 34 facilities in the central zone. This is the second time the provincial surveys were conducted. No statistically significant changes were seen in the 2016 results compared to the 2013-14 results.

Family members were asked to respond to one openended survey question. Across Alberta, family members praised hardworking staff and management and the quality of care they provided to residents. Their top three recommendations for improvement were related to food, staffing levels, and cleanliness and condition of the facility. The resident and family experiences described in the reports are just one representation of the quality of care a resident receives and should be considered with other sources of information to gain a complete picture of the quality of care and services at a particular facility.

Fire Department receives two awards By Bruce Hinkley, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose

Congratulations to Nalyn Tindall from École Charlie Killam School in Camrose for being selected to participate on the Ministry of Education’s Youth Advisory Panel. This will be an interesting educational journey for our excellent constituent. The Camrose Open Door Association was among the six recipients for the 2017 Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Community Justice Awards. Congratulations to their board and staff. Congratulations also goes out to three firefighters for Exemplary Service Medals. From our constituency are Fire Chief, Wetaskiwin Fire Services, Leigh Sawicki; and Camrose Fire Department captains Calvin Erickson and Warren Rosland. These awards were presented by Minister of Municipal Affairs Shaye Anderson. Mr. Johnny Bryne, president and CEO of Special Olympics Alberta, recently wrote, “Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Alberta to empower us to use the transformative power and joy of sport to reveal the full potential of athletes with intellectual disabilities.” The Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games recently took place in Medicine Hat. Mr. Byrne pointed out that the Special Olympics is more than just an event – Special Olympics delivers year-round world-class sport programs in communities across Alberta. For every $1 invested in Special Olympics community sport programs, a minimum of $7 of social benefit is created through improved athlete physical and mental health and increased athlete employment. When it comes to meeting the challenges of a changing climate, energy efficiency is low-hanging fruit. Efficient products can fit any budget. They are helpful for cutting back your utility bills. They make it easier to budget. It can start with a visit to the provincial energy efficiency agency. Energy Efficiency Alberta has been created to deliver energy efficiency and community energy system programs to homes, businesses and communities. A suite of Energy Efficiency Alberta programs promotes simple, cost-cutting technologies to reduce emissions without changes to your quality of life. There is a suite of programs to meet a wide variety of needs. The Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program is a low-risk introduction to efficient products like LED lights, low-flow showerheads and programmable thermostats. The Residential Retail Products Program offers rebates on an even wider range of products, including in-store products, high-efficiency appliances and home renovations (will start again in the fall). The Business, Non-Profit and institutional Energy Savings Program helps organizations cut costs. And the Residential and Commercial Solar Program helps homeowners and organizations tap into Alberta’s world-class solar resources. The goal is to help Albertans do two things: use less energy and save more money. Energy efficiency is a winwin-win proposition: a great return on investment that supports new jobs while reducing energy consumption. Consider the switch to LED lights. They are long-lasting and use 85 per cent less energy and pay for themselves in a few months. More information on specific programs is available at efficiencyalberta.ca or by calling 1-844-357-560 (toll free) Monday through Friday between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or by e-mailing hello@efficiencyalberta.ca. Information is also available by calling 310-0000 (toll free) or by visiting climate.alberta.ca. By providing stable, predictable funding to our municipal partners, we continue to ensure they have the resources needed to meet their local infrastructure priorities and strengthen the communities they call home. Bittern Lake is receiving, from the Municipality Sustainability Initiative, $15,000 for a water meter reader replacement as well $177,841 MSI funding. The County of Camrose will receive MSI capital and operating funding of $3,169,562 as well as $467,621 GTF. The City of Camrose will receive MSI capital and operating funding of $4,376,189 and GTF of $975,982. Have a great summer. I look forward to seeing many of you at community events. BRCF supports Kodály festival Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus to support the International Kodály Symposium and Music Festival at Augustana Aug. 8 to 13. The grant is from income from the Lee and Gene Penman Fund, the Howard and Margaret Church Fund, the John and Muriel Chamberlain Fund and the Douglas and

Dorothy Mattson Endowment Fund for the Arts, all created to support music, performing arts or arts programs and projects. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the gen-

erosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4,865,000 to support projects like the International Kodály Symposium and Music Festival.

Haugen’s 1941 GMC truck delivers the goods By Murray Green

Don’t be surprised if you see Back 40 Distillery co-owner Lorne Haugen making a few deliveries with his 1941 GMC half ton pick-up. No, he doesn’t make whiskey runs with his pride and joy, but he does like to take it for a spin now and then. Haugen, who lives on a farm southeast of Tofield, commutes to Camrose to attend to his business daily and he sometimes treats himself to a drive with his classic. “A friend of mine found this truck in Manitoba. He grew up on a farm just south of the fellow that originally purchased this truck,” Lorne explained. “He knew the truck since it was new and always saw it at the farm, admiring it. Then he moved to Alberta. When he went back for a holiday last summer, he found out that the truck was coming up for sale,” recalled Lorne. “The 80-year-old nephew of the farmer that used to own the truck wanted to sell it. My friend phoned and told me about the truck, so I said if it is in any kind of good shape, pick it up. I made an offer and my friend picked it up for me.” The truck was restored 30 years ago and it needed a few more repairs to bring it back to looking new again. “It was sitting in a garage since then. I replaced the front brakes, tuned it with new plugs and wires, and cleaned it up. I did routine maintenance to a vehicle that has been sitting for a long period of time. It is all original parts,” he said. “This 1941 GMC truck is quite rare and only made in Canada. In fact, it was made in Regina, which I confirmed with the serial number. They didn’t make very many trucks that year because the factory switched to making military trucks. This one was at the tail end of the production in the Regina GM plant.” To meet the heavy demand for new cars in the west, General Motors opened an assembly plant in Regina in 1927. The first

cars rolled off the assembly line in December 1928. This plant produced the first allCanadian-made Chevrolet with a six-cylinder motor. At its height of production the plant employed 850 and had a capacity output of 150 cars a day. The plant closed in 1930 because of the market crash and the ensuing economic depression. In 1931, GM reopened the plant and added Oldsmobiles to its line. In 1941, the Canadian Government took over the plant, renaming it Regina Industries. The Regina plant switched to only producing military vehicles during the rest of the Second World War. After the war, the plant closed for good. “That didn’t come into play when buying the vehicle, but it is interesting that the history records show where it was built and what factory equipment it had,” said Lorne. “Back in those days

they were pretty basic. This one has a deluxe heater in it and duel windshield wipers which was rare for that year.” Lorne enjoys attending a few car shows (promoting his distillery with signage on it). “It would be nice if it was a 1940 to match my business, but I really like the style of this truck, so I’m really happy with it. It’s a solid truck and as far as I know it has 80,000 original miles on it, so it was well taken care of.” His 1941 GMC has a 261 straight six motor with a four speed transmission. “That was pretty standard equipment back then. It runs like a top. I drove it from Tofield a couple of times and the top speed is 40 to 45 miles an hour. It is fun to drive, especially now that the brakes are fixed,” he laughed.

REGINA MADE

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Lorne Haugen traced the origin of his 1941 GMC truck back to the factory in Regina, prior to the plant turnover to military vehicles.

CWSS explores Camrose wild berries and edibles By Lori Larsen

Did you know that rose hips (ground into powder) contain 50 per cent more vitamin C than an orange and are also a powerful antioxidant? If you are curious about other wild forms of berries and edibles come out to Stoney Creek Centre on

July 27 at 7 p.m. for a walk on the wild side of Camrose edibles, presented by Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Society (CWSS). “We will go outside again, on an informational walk to pick berries and other edible plants in the valley and learn how to

find these treats yourself,” said Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Coordinator Carson Hvenegaard. “Once we are back at the Stoney Creek Centre, we will get to enjoy what we picked as well as tea and jams made from local and wild ingredients.”

Councillor Hycha brings business sense to council table By Lori Larsen

On Oct. 16, residents of Camrose will be going to the polls to check boxes in votes for mayor and eight City council members, positions within our City that occupy a great deal of commitment and responsibility. Some of the present councillors answered a few questions about their experiences in an effort to enlighten residents about the duty of sitting on city council. In speaking with councillor Kevin Hycha his responses were as follows. What has your experience on council taught you about Camrose, the community and municipal governance? “Realizing what a great city we live in,” said Kevin, without hesitation, adding, “Everywhere I go and I am asked where I am from, I reply, Camrose and the response is always the same, that’s a nice city. Camrosians are passionate about their city and want to keep it great.” In regards to what Kevin has learned about municipal governance, he said, “It is taking me a long time to learn the municipal ways, and I have a ways to go.” Kevin noted that, as a business person, he has learned to sit back and take in all the information, analyze the facts and ask questions when in doubt. “I also learned quickly that you cannot please everyone, but the decisions we make as council are for the majority.”

Kevin also said that understanding the reasons why the City does things the way they do is important. “There really is a method to their madness,” he said. “Careful studies and years of experience go into determining necessary services and needs such as snow removal, road repairs and grass cutting. “Being on council would be easy if we had all the resources/money we needed, but we don’t. We have to be careful to prioritize and evaluate the needs so we can accomplish what has to get done with as little impact to the levy as possible. It is the same concept as running a successful business.” What has been one of the most rewarding and one of the most challenging parts of being on council? “One of the most rewarding things about sitting on council is seeing projects come together,” he said. “For example, the new pavement on 39th Street, the waste water upgrade project being on track, public transportation and the swimming pool (upgrades and renovations) getting closer to reality.” Kevin remarked that by far the most challenging part of council is learning the municipal ways and the Municipal Government Act. What do you feel is the most important role of a city councillor? “Listening to people’s concerns and explaining why certain issues are decided upon or are going

back to administration for a review.” Along with listening, Kevin said it is important for councillors to be available and approachable. “Ultimately, if someone has a concern, they should reach out to City administration, but if they are still not satisfied with the answer, they can then talk to the council members. “We, as council, have been elected by the citizens, so I feel it is important that I try and make every open house, grand opening and council/board meeting that I can.” What do you think contributes to a balanced perspective on council? “Having an open mind and not always basing your decision on past experience, what others do or my own personal feelings.” Kevin indicated balancing perspectives means making decisions that benefit Camrose as a whole. He also remarked, “Administration does a great deal of work looking into the best possible way to do things with the least amount of impact on the levy.” What commitments including time, can a person expect as a City councillor? “This is something I have really struggled with over the past four years,” admitted Kevin. “Juggling time between my daytime job, family, friends and council has been a challenge. It’s not just attending council meetings the first and third Monday of each month, but all the other boards we are on, spe-

cial meetings, open houses, conferences and other commitments. “Once again, I feel I owe it to the people who elected me to be involved in as much as possible to benefit the City.” What advice would you give to anyone considering running for council? “Becoming a councillor was never really on my radar or what I dreamed of doing, but it has been a

great and rewarding experience and I hope to continue. “For those who are considering running, it is important you make sure you can commit the time and are not afraid of confrontation. “You will see the City from a totally different perspective and come to appreciate this great place even more.”

Helping to heal hearts walking in high heels

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Last year many brave men weathered the storm in heels during the Walk a Mile campaign. By Lori Larsen

In an effort to raise awareness about gender relations and sexual violence, the Walk a Mile initiative asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes.

This year, some brave and committed men of Camrose and area will once again be sized up for a pair of pumps in order to participate in the Walk A Mile campaign during the long haul of the Camrose

Kickin’ Country Parade held on Aug. 3. “This year, we are setting up in the Aaron’s parking lot at the end of main street,” said Camrose Women’s Shelter executive director Nora-Lee Rear. The walk is an international men’s march to end the long standing effects of rape, sexual assault and domestic violence against women. Men interested in participating in the walk can register by telephoning 780-679-4975 extension 8 or by email at admin@ camrosewomenshelter.org . Last year’s event had 50 participants from all “walks” of life and raised approximately $23,000, before expenses, for the shelter. Camrose Women’s Shelter is an emergency women’s shelter which provides Trauma Informed services. The Shelter’s primary mandate is to provide emergency shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse. A secondary mandate is to

provide assistance to women and children who are homeless, recognizing that many times homelessness is actually due to domestic violence. “Last year alone, the shelter could have assisted another 300 women and children if we had the capacity,” commented Rear. “On a yearly average, the shelter assists about 400 women and children from Camrose and surrounding communities including Tofield, Forestburg, Ponoka, Wetaskiwin, Leduc and Maskwacis. Our vision is that no one experiencing family violence shall be turned away or forced to return to a dangerous or abusive lifestyle.” This year, Shelter board members have designated the funds raised during Walk a Mile to support Second Stage Housing. Second Stage housing is defined as stable, longerterm, self-contained, safe, affordable, private living units for women fleeing domestic violence with supported programming.

“The board has a goal to open Second Stage Housing for women transitioning out of the shelter within three to five years in Camrose,” said Rear. “At this point, we are still looking for land on which to either build a new structure or renovate an existing structure to fit our needs. This will enable the shelter to have a bigger impact by addressing the needs of women fleeing domestic violence over a longer period of time and providing safe accommodations for women who are at a high risk for femicide. “The shelter has been assisting women in Camrose for 30-plus years and it’s time to move to the next step, which is Second Stage.” For more information on the Camrose Women’s Shelter, visit camrose womenshelter.org/.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

LOOK FOR OUR LARGE AD in next week’s (August 1) Booster for a chance to win a prize (approx. $750)! … From Rose City Farmers’ Market vendors VISIT “LOTS OF STUFF” in Duggan Mall – open 6 days a week. Avon, Regal, Watkins, Partylite, Honey, Aim Canada supplements. Until August 15, 10% off Watkins stock on hand. Avon Bubble Bath $6.00 each or 2 for $11.00. English/Spanish spoken. Shirley after 7 pm 780672-2224. Email tsbergeron@ yahoo.com, subject Lots of Stuff.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Kucy family wins McLennan Ross Golf Tour By Murray Green

Call it home course advantage, or golfing skills in the family. Either way, it was Kucy day at the McLennan Ross Golf Tour at the Camrose Golf Course on July 20. Jayla Kucy of Camrose won the junior women’s title by one stroke after a playoff round. Kaitlyn Wingnean of Edmonton and 10-year-old Jayla tied with 80 scores after the 18-hole round to force a sudden-victory playoff at the Camrose Junior Open. Jayla won the playoff with a bogey on the first extra hole. “It felt pretty good to win. I was a little nervous in front of everybody,” Jayla said, as her family and fellow golfers watched from the sidelines. “I thought about the way I played today and tried not to think of anyone else. I just focused on playing,” she added. “The playoff gives me experience and, if I am ever tied with another competitor and there is a bigger crowd, I’ll be ready for it.” She was thankful the playoff was in Camrose. “It is a course that I have

played a lot, so I knew what shots to make and I knew where to go, which helped me a little bit. The greens were faster than normal and the course was in great shape. I’m a little nervous for my brother, because it would be cool for a double win.” A season-high 60 junior golfers from as far away as Grande Prairie descended on the beautifully-groomed Camrose course. It was a three-way tie on the guys’ side with Austin Noskiye of Spruce Grove, Mason Kucy of Camrose and Ben Lovrod of Grande Prairie recording low gross scores of 77. Lovrod was knocked out of the playoff on the first extra hole and, after two more holes of the playoff were unable to decide a winner, Kucy and Noskiye were declared co-champions. “I made some good putts here and there, and chips, so I was able to tie a couple of players. Yesterday, I had a rough round. But today, I made a lot more shots. Today, I was hitting the greens, staying

in the centre and I made six birdies,” said Mason, forcing a tie-breaker. “I just wanted to hit down the middle and go shot by shot. In playoffs, I wanted to stick with them and make my shots as close as I could. I wanted to birdie.” After one player was eliminated, the final two went toe to toe on every shot. “The tie is perfect for me. I tied a good golfer that was even with me. I tried zoning them out first of all and then just worrying about making my shot.” He was also happy for his sister. “I won’t be made fun of because I didn’t win. Now I’ve won and won’t feel left out. It’s more pressure from my brother and sister than from other golfers,” he joked. “There was a big advantage playing in Camrose. I knew the course and which clubs to use. I’ve never won here, so it was awesome to finally win on my home golf course.” Eric Bouck of Camrose finished one stroke back of the leaders with a 78 total. On the girl’s side, Jenna Sand of Bashaw placed fourth.

Kucy juniors earn golf berths in tour finals By Murray Green

CASA hosts successful provincials By Murray Green

Camrose hosted a very successful weekend of soccer Tier 4 provincials on July 7 to 9. It wasn’t exactly a Camrose event, but rather a Central Alberta Soccer Association event that was organized by executive director Tammy Olson and the board of directors from many communities from the surrounding area. “The on-site organization was carried out by the Central Alberta Soccer Association and we would just like to be clear that parents from several communities put in valuable hours of time, as this was a district-hosted event,” explained Tammy. “This event is the first of its kind in Alberta soccer. All age groups were hosted in one location (Camrose).”

In the past, provincials have been hosted in a minimum of four locations throughout the province. In 2015, ASA started discussions with CASA to host a pilot project. The City of Camrose was chosen as the host site because of its reputation for having the best soccer fields in Alberta. “The City of Camrose community services department proved that by ensuring the fields were all in pristine condition. They also reconfigured three small fields at Rudy Swanson Park into two full-size fields,” shared Tammy. “The talks started within our own district (with our 14 member associations) at that time to inform them of the possibility of bringing the event to our district. A unanimous vote of all rural districts in

Alberta (16 districts in total) was taken in January of 2017 to ratify the decision.” As the host district, CASA was given a minimum of two declarations in each age group and gender to the provincial tournament (generally they only receive one for each). Sixty-six teams from across Alberta attended. The tournament was a huge success due to the assistance of the many groups and people. Soccer parents and coaches from local qualifying teams also helped. Camrose Soccer Association was going through several executive board member changes and wasn’t directly involved in hosting. CASA fielded 17 teams that earned eight medals and three Fairplay Awards.

It doesn’t get more exciting than this. Camrose golfer Devin Kucy needed two extra holes of playoffs to capture the title in Olds on July 12. Three golfers were tied through 18 holes of play. Kucy was deadlocked with Cole Bergheim of Red Deer and Nick Rimmer of Edmonton after shooting 74 on the day. However, all three pared the first playoff hole to force another playoff. Kucy hit a 10-foot par putt after the other two missed to capture the victory. All three qualified for the tour championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on Aug. 28. This was the first tour playoff for all three golfers.

They were followed by many of the other tournament competitors and a host of nervous parents and grandparents watching every stroke. On the par 4 dogleg left Number 2, Rimmer and Kucy were in the right trees off the tee, and had to lay up short of the green, while Bergheim went long and left with his approach, leaving all three players facing lengthy par putts once they reached the green. After Rimmer and Bergheim missed, Kucy went centre cut with his 10-footer, punctuated with a tour-calibre fist pump. Kucy actually qualified for the tour championship the day before in Carstairs. Devin’s older brother Mason and Jace Shannon of Forestburg posted matching 80s to tie for ninth.

GAMES GOLD

Submitted Camrose Cardinals softball team garnered a gold medal at the Summer Games in Medicine Hat on July 7-9. Camrose was tied 7-7 in the last inning when they exploded for six runs to win the event.

Rosalind sits at the top of the league with an 11-3 record after all 14 games. The Tofield Braves are next with a 10-4 record. The Holden Blue Jays are in third place at 10-4 followed by Leduc Milleteers with a 9-5 record. The Camrose Roadrunners at 4-9, Armena Royals at 2-11 and Sherwood Park

Athletics at 2-12 round out the teams in the league. Holden defeated Rosalind 10-7 and Armena edged Sherwood Park 6-5 on July 18. The last game of the season was Armena at Camrose on July 19. Once the season is over, the top four teams will complete in playoffs. Rosalind will host Leduc and Holden will be at Tofield in the semifinals. The annual all-star game is slated for Aug. 8 in Camrose.
