Music was the life of Hungarian Zoltán Kodály. As a child around 1890, he learned how to play the violin. By 1906, he had written a thesis on Hungarian folk song. But public success was not to be achieved until 1923. As the decades passed, his unique, ground-breaking methods of music education were being praised and adopted by scholars of leading universities as well as individual music instructors. Even though Kodály’s life came to an end in 1967, his principles of music education live on and continue to be highly regarded worldwide. From August 8 through 13, the 23rd International Kodály Symposium & Music Festival will take place right here in Camrose at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. Local and international presenters will deliver insight and research on music education for classroom, choral and studio. Workshops and papers will be of benefit to the pursuit and progress of music for every age group. Guests from around the world will converge in Camrose to engage in and reflect upon the remarkable insights and philosophy of this esteemed music mentor.

Camrose sings the circle during 2017 Kodály Symposium and Music Festival
Kodály Symposium, Singing the Circle
After three years of intense planning and with the help of many, the City of Camrose and the Augustana Campus are poised and ready to host the 23rd International Kodály Symposium. Entitled Singing the Circle: KodályInspired Music Education from Birth to Adult, the symposium will attract over 250 music educators from around the world. These individuals have devoted their lives to Ardelle Ries, Associate Professor of song-based music educaMusic, University of tion practices grounded on Alberta Augustana the philosophy of esteemed Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, pedagogue, and linguist, Zoltán Kodály (pronounced koh-dye). Kodályian ideals embrace music as an oral and aural representation of culture present at the heart of all community and society. Already in the early 20th century, Kodály recognized that active musical participation (singing, dancing, reading, writing, and aural analysis) as opposed to passive musical participation (listening and watching) plays an integral role in cognitive and linguistic development. Kodály favoured and highlighted the singing voice above all, stating, “All people should sing before playing an instrument…free singing without instruments is the school of true and deep musicality. We should make musicians before we make instrumentalists and all would be better.” Through his work with children and young adults he experienced first-hand the strong relationship between the study of music and success in other academic disciplines. In one of his last public lectures, Kodály stated, “…where music…is one of the compulsory subjects taught every day, the children study every other subject with greater facility and thoroughness.” Kodály was adamant that every school should offer musical instruction and experience to all children on a daily basis taught by rigorously trained and highly qualified specialist music teachers. In Kodály’s words: “Only the best is good enough for children.” For Kodály, music is considered to be the most powerful vehicle upon which ideas and emotions are transported from generation to generation to generation, and this connection, from the past, to the present, to the future, creates a firm foundation for a vibrant, cohesive, and connected community. Kodály died in Budapest in 1967 at the age of 84. To facilitate this phenomenon, since 1975, International Kodály Symposia have been hosted every two years in cities around the world. The host country is encouraged to choose an appropriate theme that would nurture a rich exchange of pedagogical ideas and practices. The 2017 Symposium in Camrose marks the 40th anniversary of the first time that Canada was chosen as a host country. Our theme, Singing the Circle, is one that sparks the imagination and speaks to the soul. The circle is deeply symbolic on many levels with reference to the sacred traditions of our Indigenous peoples, the circle of life, inhalation and exhalation as the foundation for singing, and musical “circles” in the context of harmony, rounds, games and dances, and conducting gesture. In addition, the circle is a common metaphor for the process whereby music educators, performers, and researchers understand and revision their work as artist-teachers. Singing the Circle fully embraces the 135th anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s birth and the 50th anniversary of his death and bears connection to sesquicentennial celebrations for Canadian confederation. As the Big Valley Jamboree draws to a close, intense musical activity will continue in Camrose between Aug. 8 to 13. The City of Camrose, the Augustana Campus, and Battle River country promises to provide a hospitable environment for the rich exchange of current pedagogical ideas and practices as related to song-based music education and musical experience for the very young through to the elderly. Camrose and the Augustana Campus eagerly await the arrival of our international guests to Sing the Circle. As we celebrate, explore, and experience life-long songbased music education, we encourage you to join in and celebrate, explore, and actively experience music and singing in your life! Come, Sing the Circle with us!
By Lori Larsen Camrose will be alive with the sound of music from Aug. 8 to 13 as Camrose and the University of Alberta Augustana Campus welcomes 250 delegates and presenters from 20 countries around the world, to the 2017 Kodály Symposium and Music Festival. Symposium coordinator Ardelle Ries associate professor/music University of Alberta Augustana Campus, along with a dedicated group, have been working on bringing this momentous event to Camrose for over three years. “This is like a dream come true,” smiled Ries. “When I first became acquainted with Augustana back in the ’90s working in their summer music camp, I always thought this is a campus where in the summer beautiful things can happen, a summer retreat, so to speak.” The symposium is gearing up to be exactly what Ries envisioned. “I am excited that this family of music educators are coming together here in Camrose, to generate all kinds of ideas and make connections. “Bringing everyone together to share is really exciting for me and in a location where it is possible to have deep conversations.” Ries spoke about how Camrose is the perfect location for a thought-provoking symposium such as this and offers the delegates an opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas, knowledge and experience in a closeknit, beautiful location. “When it became apparent that they (Kodály Association) needed a city for the 2017 symposium, I thought we can do it right here. “After that, it became a creative process as to how we could design this so it was really a meaningful and beautiful thing that reaches out to a wider audience, not just an academic gathering. “Most of what we are doing with this symposium is going to be very active. We have a specialist who will be doing singing games and dances that are open for all delegates “It will be so much fun but, at the same time, there is so much in these traditional ancient games it will be exciting to see people enjoying them and learning these things from around the world.” The organizers of the symposium want it to be relevant to all attendees by connecting the academic ideas to what is actually happening in the classrooms and demonstrate
that the two can be closely aligned. “We combined amateurs with professionals to show that music is for everyone (Kodály theory) and singing is for everyone.” The theme for the symposium, “Singing the Circle” was Ries’ own idea and was somewhat spurred from the indigenous tradition of living the circular life, the connections between all things with the death of something comes the birth of another thing. “In terms of music, circles are a part of our work, too. With harmonic language we have what is called the circle of fifths, the way different kinds of harmonies sound together and, in terms of singing, our breath is what our voice is and is only possible through the vibration of air inhaling and exhaling.” Ries added that teaching, itself, entails a circle of presenting and reviewing, a circular evaluative process. Tying in the generations is another key notion of the symposium and ultimately one that Ries sees as being an integral part of the future of music teaching. “Our keynote speaker on the last evening will be speaking about singing through the generations (intergenerational) making the connections. “One of the areas we have dreamed about for a very long time is to have a music education program here in Camrose.” The program would encourage music education at the earliest age possible and also enhance the relationship with the Augustana Faculty Conservatory of Music. In connection with the symposium, the 2017 Kodály Music Festival
will feature concerts and recitals including: Aug. 8 – Singing the Circle from Dawn ’til Dusk featuring Asani, the Calgary Girls’ Choir and the Borealis String Quartet; Aug. 9 – Leela Gilday; Aug. 11 – Vocal Recital with Kathleen Corcoran and Judith Richardson with Roger Admiral and Gilbert de Greeve; and Aug. 12 – Vocal Recital with Cathy Daniel and Nola Schantz. In addition to this, on Aug. 10 at 8 p.m., a free concert by the Borealis String Quartet will be open to the public held in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. On Aug. 12 at 8:15 p.m., a free concert of delegates and community Singing the Circle: From Dusk ’til Dawn will be held at the Augustana Chapel. (Due to limited space, the Aug. 12 concert will be on a first-come first-serve basis.) “This is an opportunity for people to come together and sing,” commented Ries. Both free concerts are sponsored by the City of Camrose. On a final note, Ries expressed her deepest gratitude towards Augustana and everybody in the community who have been so supportive. “This may not happen as smoothly in other communities because there isn’t the luxury of having this amount of people who are thrilled to have this in our community. “There is so much that is possible in our city because there are people who chose to be here and are lifelong learners, not afraid to explore and risk. “If you don’t step out and risk, nothing can happen.” A point well proven by the soon-to-be 2017 Kodály Symposium and Music Festival.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Ardelle Ries, associate professor of music, University of Alberta Augustana Campus, excitedly awaits the arrival of some 250 delegates and presenters for the 2017 Kodály Symposium.

Her European facials are extremely popular. Ria notes, “It is quite an involved facial. It deep-cleans the pores, exfoliates, rejuvenates and uplifts.” In fact, many of her clients report long-lasting benefits from receiving regular facials. Ria also has clients that come strictly for her perfect eyebrow waxes, along with eyebrow and eyelash tinting. An array of additional treatments for the face, back, hands and feet are available including waxing, manicures and pedicures. Ria and her husband are the parents of two grown children and have happily made Camrose their home for many years.

STAND TALL. WEAR A CROWN. BE SWEET ON THE INSIDE. When Liz Zonneveld was creating a logo for her event planning business, she had an “Aha!” moment: The pineapple. It stands tall , it wears a crown and it’s sweet on the inside. What better way to let the world know your company embraces joyful, inventive qualities. Liz brings this same creativity to the events she plans through her company, Masterpiece Events. “No matter the reason or the season, we’ll plan your bash in a flash,” she says with a bright smile. Liz is a graduate of the International School of Hospitality in Las Vegas, the world’s entertainment capital. She has planned grand openings, weddings, milestone events, anniversaries, birthday parties, corporate retreats and celebrations of all descriptions. Right now, she is working on the grand re-opening of M&M Food Market which includes a charity barbecue scheduled for August 12. Funds raised during the M&M event will be donated to the Camrose Women’s Shelter, a charity Liz strongly supports by donating her talents and time. She also volunteers for the Red Deer Women’s Shelter. Liz says the best part of being an event planner is bringing the vision of her clients to life and seeing the excitement and delight in their eyes as they watch their guests enjoying themselves. Ideas and creativity Masterpiece Events are important, but so is giving attention to all the countless details that makes an event successful and memorable. Liz takes care of the details. If you have an important event on the horizon, give Liz a call to plan something unforgettable for you.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Food colouring in the water Someone I cherish died this week. She was 37. Four years ago, Gina had her first bout of cancer. Last year it returned and was treated. But when it returned a few months ago, it simply took over. A few weeks ago she was still working, between chemo treatments. And then something changed, and she was in the final weeks of her life. ***
I am stunned by the intensity of my grief. We worked together from a distance for almost 10 years, but only met in person once. How did this person become so important to me? Her work was impeccable–quick, efficient, accurate. Her work smoothed the way for me to be good at what I’m good at, without being distracted by things I’m not good at. But it was more than Gina’s competence that was such a gift. In her presence, I felt cherished. She didn’t just care about doing a good job. She actually cared about me and the work I was doing. You can be polite and you can be competent and kind, but after a certain point, you can’t fake actual caring. She actually cared, wanting the best for me. I could feel that. I suspect that’s how most if not all her clients felt. And I cared about her too, and wanted the best for her. She’s been in my thoughts and prayers every day for months. I wanted a miracle. I didn’t want that light to be extinguished. And maybe there was a miracle–just not the one I wanted. ***
I was impressed by how she met the cancer, facing it head on. She didn’t complain, she could always find something to be grateful for, and she focussed on what she could do. During the past four years, there have been other tragedies in the life of her family. She faced them the same way. She felt what she was feeling, and then did what she could to help. Always her focus was on how to be a positive presence. In her message to let us know Gina had died, her sister said: “We lost an angel here on earth and heaven gained one when Gina passed peacefully in her sleep this morning. A close friend described Gina as ‘food coloring in water’ -to me, it means that her soul, her energy, her ‘Gina-ness’ affects everything and everyone she touches: brightening lives, bringing smiles and forever changing us for the better.” ***
I’m old enough not to be afraid of grief. I don’t like it but I’m not afraid of it any more. I know the only way through it is to go through it. Trying to dull it does not work–only changes the form. Even when you think you’re through it, grief can catch you off guard and sear through you, sometimes years later. Grief has its own path. Someone who has had many more intense experiences of grief than I’ve ever had once told me, “Grief breaks you open. And once you’re through it, you are never the same. But you are capable of much more, you can understand much more, than you ever could before.” ***
“Food colouring in the water” is a phrase I’ll remember for a long time. Words to live by, something to aspire to, It occurs to me that all of us are food colouring in the water–we cannot not have an impact on the world around us. Let us then choose that our impact be positive. ***

I want to give a big shoutout to some of our public servants who care for Camrose citizens every day in many ways that largely go unrecognized. On a recent glorious morning I was taking my usual walk with a close friend around Mirror Lake. As we rounded the bend near Grand Drive, my legs decided to take off in a direction of their own. Before I knew it, I had done a full face-plant onto the grass next to the path. My friend and a lady passing by did what they could to attend to me, but two angels suddenly appeared out of the blue (literally!) and took charge. From my prone position I was delighted to glimpse at the uniforms of two of our city police officers. They had been driving by on Grand Dr., saw me fall, and immediately stopped their car and came to my rescue. After checking me out and spending a considerable amount of their time with me, they decided it would be best for me to be examined at the hospital. So, they radioed for the EMS and waited with me until I was transferred into the ambulance. Once the EMS attendants took over, the level of attentive care continued. They were absolutely outstanding in reassuring me, making me comfortable, and observing me closely on the way to St. Mary’s emergency department. The handover there went smoothly and they stayed with me until the Emergency staff took over. The fall was certainly not a pleasant experience, but the care I received was. It left me with a feeling of gratitude for the incredible personal attention given to me from all the personnel involved. Once again I was reminded of why Camrose is such a great place to live. Both the police and the EMS attendants made me feel, not just like a citizen, but like a member of a caring community.
I want to let people know what a treasure we have in those who devote their lives daily to making sure we are kept safe, often with little or no recognition. As far as I am concerned, they are not just public employees. They are our guardians. Peter LeBlanc, Camrose Wage gaps
I have heard some feedback from my letter, which I wrote about the new labour laws which were just recently passed by the government. I do realize that the minimum wage debate is a very hot one. As time goes by, the gap between the poor classes of society and the rich has been decreasing. The middle class has been slowly disappearing. It seems to me that whether people with or without kids can make their bills, is not a deep concern to many people who are rather in the rich category. People have been told to just work just a little bit harder and longer. What happens if there are certain people who are not able to get a second or third or fourth job? Childcare is so expensive that after a couple pays the day care bill, most of the extra money goes to pay those bills! What about the wages which some of these people do manage to earn? I do believe unions are the answer to this problem. Yet so many people do not have the privilege of a union. Without government intervention, a lot of companies would love to pay like their counterparts in Mexico. China also does come to mind. Cheap labour makes pretty cheap prices on the global market. How well do these people live? The standard of living is very low. So, for those who think there should be very little government intervention, put that in your bonnet. People’s rights need to be protected. Just because your income is low does not make you lazy. You just need more government help. This is just something for all of you to ponder. Lorne Vanderwoude, Camrose We have a problem! Trustees for the Battle River School Division said verses from the Holy Bible contravene Alberta Human Rights legislation. Diane Hutchinson said the BRSD
must see that Cornerstone Academy is compliant. Ms. Hutchinson, according to the Alberta Human Rights Act (current as of Dec. 11, 2015), the preamble states that all persons are equal in dignity, rights and responsibilities without regard to race, religious beliefs, colour, gender identity, gender expression, physical disability, age ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income, family status or sexual orientation. No person shall make a statement that indicates discrimination or intent to discriminate against a person or class of persons or is likely to expose a person or class of person to hatred or contempt because they belong to one part of the group mentioned in the preamble. In the case of the Cornerstone Christian Academy I refer to religious beliefs. Religious beliefs are equal to all the other aforementioned persons. The Alberta Education Act (as of June 13, 2016), Part 3 Clause 35 and 35.1 quotes the aforementioned preamble in the Alberta Human Rights Act. The Alberta Education Act added certain specific groups of person to their legislation over and above the Alberta Human Rights Act. BRSD Policy 26 added more individual persons than the AHRA and the Alberta Education Act. Persons adhering to Christian principles as laid out in the Holy Bible are equal under law to all the others. you cannot promote hatred toward any person because of religious belief. Ms Hutchinson, Ms Skori and board of trustees, the question is simple and straight forward. Why is Cornerstone Christian Academy being charged as non-compliant to the Alberta Human Rights Act or the Alberta Education Act of BRSD policy handbook? If they are compliant why are you terminating the agreement? Will you please do a press release. Vern Peterson, Kingman

Grief support steps away By Lori Larsen Colette Howery, member of the Hospice Society of Camrose and District’s weekly Grief-Support Walking group speaks eloquently of the process of sharing grief. “No-one is exempt from the heartache of loss so let’s learn together how we can help each other.” And help each other is exactly what a group of grieving friends do when they meet on Wednesday’s for the grief-support walk. Celebrating its one year anniversary the grief -support walking initiative has provided valuable support to a core group of approximately nine people and over 30 drop-ins. “The first walk was on July 20, 2016,” said Hospice Society of Camrose and District program coordinator Bill Harder. “We have walked every week in the last year, including Christmas week and 31 people have participated.” Colette Howery, Helen Samm and Nicole Luft are the main volunteer facilitators with the support of staff members Joy LeBlanc and Harder. “We average nine walkers a week, with a high of 14 and a low of four,” said Harder. But its not about the number of people that show up for the walks it is about
the quality of support, caring and eventual friendships that develop. “We have had grievers bereft of their spouse, parent, sibling; grief through divorce, loss of ability, and loss of work. All kinds of grief,” commented Harder. There is no cost to the program, and it is on a drop-in basis. All walkers are asked to register and sign waivers. The walk itself is most often done outside, usually around Mirror Lake, meeting in the parking area of the Bill Fowler Centre. In the event of inclement weather, walkers enjoy the comfort of the indoor walking track at the Camrose Recreation Centre. Coffee is provided by the Camrose Primary Care Network. In a fashion, perhaps only recognizable to those who are suffering loss, this group of people have created a warm and accepting bond, one that fears no judgement, shares all kinds of emotions but most importantly supports one another in the process of healing hearts. “Yes, we are sad in our grief,” said Colette Howery with a degree of melancholy “But as we walk alongside each other on Wednesday mornings, we discover kindred spirits and even rediscover laughter. Grief support walking group Continued from page 10
In their grief this group has also developed a new sense of friendship, one that is rare and yet true. “Back in February when my husband died suddenly they kindly invited me to join the grief walk where I have met new friends and acquaintances who are very wise and insightful, which has been helpful in my grieving,” remarked Laurie Simms. “Even though my world changed suddenly and will never be the same again these people make it easier to move on knowing they have been there too.” The group knows no boundaries either. No one’s grief is discounted, no one’s pain is dismissed. “I joined the first walk of the Grief-Support Walk, with my niece, after seeing the advertisement in the paper,” explained Lori-Ann Zimmer. “My dad was diagnosed with prostate stage 4 terminal bone cancer and I knew I was experiencing anticipatory grief. I wanted to join the group to provide future support for my daughter, husband and mother. The group has been much more than a support group. The friendships that have been established, the compassion exhibited, and the fun and laughter has been an added bonus. “Losing a father is a monumental loss in one’s lifetime and it is important to be surrounded by caring, individuals and provided support and comfort. “To know I was not alone in grief was therapeutic and consoling and walking in nature around Mirror Lake has been healing and a cathartic experience. “The group has been a blessing and when group members attended my dad’s funeral in March, it was a testament to the kindness, caring hearts, fortitude, and spirit of the members involved. And was unexpected, yet gratefully appreciated and never forgotten. It has been a profound, insightful, and enlightening journey with friends, that I have the privilege of meeting every Wednesday morning with anticipation and hope.” Testimonials of the extraordinary blessing the walking group has provided are plenty. Through tears, sometimes of laughter, sometimes of sorrow, members relate what it means to have such a beneficial program and encourage others, who may be working through their own grief, that support and love are truly only steps away.

City council goes live online By Lori Larsen The City of Camrose has beefed up its technology in order to allow residents more opportunities to access coverage of all council meetings. “As of Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. not only will council meetings be broadcast on channel 10 but they will also be live streamed on our website,” said city manager Malcolm Boyd. “The recordings will be available in our archives a day or two after a council meeting,” added Boyd. The archived videos allow residents to click through different agenda topics so they can easily pinpoint specific areas of interest of any previous-
ly recorded meeting, as opposed to watching the entire meeting. “This change is all about transparency and transparency builds trust,” said Boyd. “It’s also about encouraging residents to participate in local government. Not everyone has the time to attend a council meeting, but this technology will allow residents to follow a debate in a way that’s convenient for them.” To access the videos go to www.camrose.ca/ and click on the Your Government heading. For live stream click on Live Council Meetings. For archived recordings and agendas click on Videos, Agendas and Minutes.
Parade Route
Parade set to go downtown By Lori Larsen The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce Kick’N Country parade is making its rounds again on Aug. 3 starting at 10:30 a.m. Get out your lawn chair and find a spot along the parade route so you can enjoy all the fun and action that accompanies the parade.
See photo, above, for the exact parade route beginning on 51 Avenue. Come out and see the ornately decorated floats, vintage police cars and other vehicles, musicians, the Al Shamal Shriners, Walka-Milers for the Camrose Women’s Shelter, entries honouring War Veterans,
cadets and emergency responders and hilarious parade characters including Ole Uffda who will be available on main street for photos prior to the parade and by all indications this year the parade will be welcoming some newcomers to the lineup.

Dedicated to bringing a stage to life By Lori Larsen An empty stage is brought to life by the presence that step foot on it. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the team at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, with the direction of general manager Nick Beach, Camrose and area residents are blessed with a lively stage. Nick came to the Performing Arts Centre just over three years ago, taking the position of technical director and operations manager and within five short months became general manager. “I went to school in Montreal at the National Theatre School of Canada and spent some time at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. “I moved to Prince Albert and opened a brand new theatre in 2003, very much like this one, called the E. A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts similar to the size of ours (Lougheed Centre).” Missing being in theatre production Nick moved on to Fort McMurray to take over as the production manager for the theatre department. During their time there Nick and his wife, Stacey, discussed the possibility of moving to a more central location and with one thing leading to another the Beach family found themselves moving to Camrose. “It was really about Camrose as much as the theatre (Lougheed),” Nick admitted happily. “You can’t not want to move here because it is beautiful. And it is a beautiful theatre and it was a chance to open a hall again. “We looked at the town (city) really closely because we have a young daughter and we wanted her to grow up in a really great place and Camrose drew us in.” For the Beaches, Camrose was the perfect location. Geographically close to a large airport and a major centre, yet itself a smaller-sized city that offers all the amenities and plenty of things to do. With an infectious enthusiasm Nick literally bounces off his chair describing his role at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre and the incredible support he receives from the team. “We have a great team, and the partnership between the City and the University (Augustana) really works and they really want to see it succeed.” In a short period of time the team has taken the Lougheed centre from
nearly no events to as busy as many of the major regional theatres out of the Edmonton region. “It was clearly needed,” commented Nick. “A hall this size with a stage this size and the community interest was there. This is a busy, busy place and we just keep growing.” In the first season Nick and the team procured 20 presentations.
“A lot of our Camrose audience are saying we used to go to Edmonton and we don’t any more because our programming has become so diverse.” Nick related a story of his own dad (since passed away) being somewhat reluctant to attend a contemporary dance show, yet in the intermission of his first ever experience, was vibrating with excitement

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre general manager Nick Beach brings excitement and vitality to his work and the stage.
“Last year, we did 22 and this year we are presenting 29 shows so far, 27 for community and two specifically for schools.” Along with bringing some bigger names of entertainment into Camrose the team at the Lougheed also feel it is important to offer access to the centre for all residents of Camrose and area. “Now we are looking at what are the partnerships we haven’t pursued that we should. What are other groups that we are not reaching because we are here to enrich the lives of Camrose residents?” Including removing what may be barriers to some residents to attend events, by offering three free shows in the family series. Nick is also pleased to say that the Lougheed has a wonderful working relationship with the Bailey Theatre and that each venue has its own unique functionality. “There is work that people like seeing at the Bailey and that is their thing. They are doing a good job over there and they do it well and we are not going to get in their way.” It is obvious that Nick’s brain works 24-7 thinking about what he should expose to the Camrose audience, in a sense of offering a broader cultural base and keeping the excitement alive.
and ended up buying season tickets. “It’s important to grow your audience by exposing them to different things, which in turn broadens the performing arts centre.” And doing so is an art in itself, balancing big name entertainment with lesser known artists, bringing in shows that may be well known to other communities throughout Canada but are new to the tastes of Camrose and building vital partnerships with other theatre organizations in Alberta. “These partnerships are needed to bring these shows here and as our partnerships keep getting stronger our clout is growing and we are able to get them here. “I love what we get to do,” said Nick sincerely. “It is a big responsibility and we take that responsibility seriously. But it is fun. “And the support we get from the business community and our partners is just unreal. We have the best series and show sponsors.” It takes a person like Nick Beach to get the community engaged, keep them excited and make a difference in the cultural lives of the residents. Memberships keep museum healthy By Lori Larsen The Camrose Centennial Museum Society (CCMS), established in 2015, is encouraging residents of Camrose and area to become contributing partners in keeping the museum a valuable part of the community, by purchasing museum society memberships. “Family treasures that have been turned over to the museum and have become community treasures still need to be looked after,” said CCMS board member Janine Carroll. “It may not necessarily mean that a particular artifact needs attention right away but may require some in the future which may come at some expense.” The money generated from the nominal membership fees will serve as ongoing funds to assist in maintaining, not only ongoing expenses, but unforeseen expenses in the care of artifacts and training opportunities for volunteers. “If we have constant income it could go towards training volunteers and expenses that may crop up for artifacts,” said Carroll relating examples including special housing for an artifact, repairs to the vehicles or specialized training in working with specific
ering the impact those dollars can have on keeping the museum a vital part of the community. The mandate of the Society is, “To provide a supporting role to the City of Camrose in operating the museum through fund raising, grant funding, and other support as required” The society will be producing a newsletter and having an annual general meeting as ways to keep members, not only of the society, but the community informed about the museum. “The society will be creating a bigger presence in the future,” noted Carroll. “It has been created to assist with the fund development, and has nine board members and Dariya Veenstra (museum coordinator). Carroll stated that she has heard many comments from residents reminiscing about their childhood visits to the museum with their classrooms. “The museum will exist for many future generations, we encourage those who have these fond childhood memories to help keep our museum healthy and accessible for future school visits. By coming to the museum the next generations can see the machinery implements, everything that connects

items such as photographs, textiles and metals. Memberships can be purchased any time at the museum and prices are available at individual or family rates. The hopes of the society is to create a large enough membership base to not only maintain ongoing funds but to spawn excitement within the community about the gift that the museum is to all members. Minutes of the old society indicated that at one time it had up to 500 members. “The cost for membership then was $1,” said Carroll adding it is comparable to what the museum is charging today, which is a nominal amount consid-
our lives to local pioneers and history. “We also appeal to those who have contributed artifacts to the museum, over the past 50 years, and their descendants to purchase annual memberships-a small amount to contribute to the ongoing care and storage of these very special gems.” A membership kick-off will take place on Aug. 18, the 50th birthday celebration of the museum. Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Community Services art director Jane-Cherry-Lemire studies one of the pieces of the Art and Design in the 21st Century exhibition being shown at the Chuck McLean Arts Centre until Aug. 23.
Art is everywhere we look By Lori Larsen Art saturates our lives with beauty, light and expression and can often be found in the least obvious places, like the paper cup your takeout yogurt comes in or the Camrose garden beds meticulously planted in Ombré shades. The Chuck McLean Arts Centre is happy to present the Art and Design in the 21st Century exhibit presented by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling exhibition Program, on display from July 25 to Aug. 23. This particular exhibition studies the elements and principles of fine art and design as expressed in the work of three contemporary Edmonton artists. Fine art and design are not mutually exclusive but are based on the same

principles and often have similar purposes and are often created by the same person. As expressed by American designer, Paul Rand, “design is everything and the visual world, whether speaking of a fine landscape painting or such banal objects as traffic signs, is defined by the principles and elements of design.” “The Art Walk offers the opportunity for people to experience all sorts of mediums and approaches to the artistic process,” said City of Camrose arts director Jane Cherry-Lemire. “This curated show offers a glimpse into the practices of Edmonton artists Jason Blower, Lee Nielsen and Jim Stanton. It is the type of show that
once you are engaged can really make you think.” Camrose and area residents are invited to come to the Chuck Mclean Arts Centre and enjoy a viewing of this exhibit and remember to take in the 22nd annual Art Walk, second session running from July 24 to Sept. 5. A variety of art created by local and visiting artists will be displayed throughout the city at 10 local venues. To help celebrate Canada 150 there will be a focus on how art is translated into what it means to be Canadian. Visit the camroseartssociety.ca/ for more information on the Camrose Arts Society.

Gilday performance at Kodály By Murray Green
New menu here soon!
Garry Jesperson
Passionate northern singer-songwriter Leela Gilday has a voice that comes straight from the heart. She is going to perform her songs in conjunction with the 23rd International Kodály Symposium and Music Festival (Aug. 8 to 13). Leela takes to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts centre stage on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. Confessing her stories to her audiences with a clear voice and open stage presence, Gilday weaves her experiences as a northerner, a member of the Dene nation and a traveler into a beautiful world that transports the listener. With four full-length recordings and a long tour-
ing history, Gilday has numerous awards to her credit, including a Juno, two Western Canadian Music Awards and Aboriginal Female Entertainer of the Year. Above all, she seeks connection with her audiences through music and with each record brings more unique stories to the world. Whether it’s an anthem for the oppressed, or an upbeat song about mortality, she infuses her songs with a sense of humour as well as a sense of social justice and an ironic appreciation of human folly. From her home in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, touring has taken Leela from Tokyo to Toronto and from New Zealand
to Greenland, with an overwhelming response to the strength of her performances in concert halls, festivals or on radio and television. Without a doubt, Leela has earned an important place in the Aboriginal music scene and as part of the musical fabric of Canada. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camrose live.ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is also open one hour prior to all performances. Tribute to Elvis By Murray Green
Certain dates in history are etched in your mind forever. Can you remember where or what you were doing when the announcement of “The King is Dead” hit the airwaves? I remember harrowing the back 30 field on Aug. 16, 1977 when the news was first broadcast. You can help commemorate the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ death by attending the Elvis Film festival at the Bailey Theatre on Aug. 16. The Bailey Theatre is going to feature an evening of three Elvis films for the price of one. Featured films will be King Creole, Blue Hawaii and Elvis on Tour. Elvis Aaron Presley was born Jan. 8, 1935 and died on Aug. 16, 1977 and has been regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, often referred to as “The King.” The Bailey Theatre will screen three Elvis films on the actual date of the 40th anniversary of his death. All three movies will be projected on the Bailey’s wide screen in wonderful surround sound. King Creole is a 1958 musical drama about a 19-year-old who gets mixed up with crooks and involved with two women. The film was released by Paramount Pictures on July 2, 1958 to both critical and commercial success. The critics were unanimous in their praise of Presley’s performance. The soundtrack song “Hard Headed Woman” reached number one on the Billboard pop singles chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, while the soundtrack album peaked at number two on the Billboard album chart. Blue Hawaii is a 1961 musical romantic comedy. Chadwick Gates (Elvis) has just left the army and is happy to be back in Hawaii with his surfboard, his beach buddies and his girlfriend Maile Duval (Joan Blackman). His mother, Sarah Lee (Angela Lansbury) wants him to follow in his father’s footsteps and take over management of the family business, the Great Southern Hawaiian Fruit Company business, but Chad is reluctant, so he goes to work as a tour guide at his girlfriend’s agency. Elvis on Tour is an musical documentary film released by MGM in 1972. It was the 33 and final motion picture to star Elvis Presley before his death. The final era of the 20th Century’s most respected rock icon Elvis is captured here by MGM doing what he did best of all performing to various live audiences. Movies begin at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.

Glenn William Sitler March 4, 1935 ~ July 26, 2014 Glenn, age 82, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully with his family at his side after a long and difficult, but courageous struggle with cancer. He was predeceased by his son Tim; his parents Elmer and Alice Sitler; his sister Gail (Look); and brother Harold. Glenn leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 58 years, Edith; daughters Ellen (Aroon) and Gaylene (Will); and “son” Jeff (Jody). They will all miss him tremendously. He also leaves a host of relatives and friends who will never forget his gentle spirit and caring ways. Glenn lived a full life and was a blessing to all who knew and loved him. He was a man of kindness, compassion and integrity, as well as a man of many talents and interests – farmer, photographer, gardener, woodworker, singer, tractor and gas engine enthusiast, to name a few. He was a lab technician for 40 years with what is now Suncor Oil. Glenn and Edith developed their beautiful acreage east of Sherwood Park where they lived for 38 years before moving into Sherwood Park nine years ago. They travelled extensively and enjoyed many trips together, often with family or friends. Glenn’s early school years were in the Bardo and Kingman districts. He graduated high school from Camrose Lutheran College and later attended Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute where he met Edith. Glenn was a man of strong conviction and faith in Christ and was deeply involved in his church and related activities. Our family is comforted to know that we will be together again one day in that place of no more suffering or sorrow. Until that time, we will miss him more than words can possible say. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Sherwood Park with Pastor Markus Wilhem of Glory Lutheran Church officiating. Cremation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Glory Lutheran Church in Sherwood Park, Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute in Camrose, Hastings Lake Lutheran Bible Camp or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to extend thanks and gratitude to the nurses and doctors who so thoughtfully and tenderly offered their care at the Cross Cancer Institute, Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan hospitals. Thank you especially to Dr. Stecyk in Fort Saskatchewan for his kind and compassionate care.
Honour your departed friend or relative …with a memorial gift that will do good in their name forever.

Meeting with grassroots By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot As I write this midJuly Parliamentary Report, I am encouraged by the recent precipitation we have received in some parts of our large riding. It has been too dry for many of our agricultural producers and every bit of rain helps. Other uplifting news includes the success of conservatives in our province agreeing to unite under one banner in time for the next provincial election cycle. Conservatives are disappointed with the performance of the Alberta NDP government and are doing the hard work needed to replace them. The amalgamation of the conservatives in our province is a major step forward, and we can all be pleased with this progress. As always, constituents in Battle River-Crowfoot are generously sharing their political views with me at every stop I make throughout the summer. As usual, I am pleased to report that the vast majority of us feel the same way on the top political issues. From my perspective, I see political mismanagement of these issues from both the provincial government and the federal Liberal government. There are many examples of what we are talking about. We know Prime Minister Trudeau’s decision to arbitrarily make a secret multi-million dollar payoff to Omar Khadr is wrong. The Supreme Court of Canada never ordered any monetary compensation. The Supreme Court ruled that repatriation of Omar Khadr was the proper remedy and that’s why the previous Conservative government brought him back to Canada. There was no need to apologize to a convicted terrorist. Justin Trudeau chose a mean-spirited approach that has made it harder for Khadr’s victim’s family to seek compensation. The provincial government in their zeal to pursue “environmental” policies are driving our province into debt while failing to ensure workers have jobs. This was highlighted in my recent tour of the Sheerness Generating Station with fellow Albertan Members of Parliament Earl Dreeshen and Shannon Stubbs. While China and other countries continue to burn coal, export coal and build plants to generate power from coal, our governments are shutting down our coal plants with no plan for the re-employment of these workers. Amidst the graduations, celebrations, parades and other events that I have been attending, there are also community-building efforts. The “Taste of Stettler Night” and the Kneehill County’s “Farm to Table Culinary Tour” are events that bring together our volunteer organizations, local businesses, agriculture operations and workers to ‘meet and greet’. The history of our area of Alberta shows us that many local entrepreneurs developed prosperous and employment-generating enterprises large and small. Our agricultural industry has always and will continue to serve us well. As your Member of Parliament, it is great to see local communities working to try to maximize our opportunities. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Sorenson chaired the (June 2008) Omar Khadr Report of the Standing Committee, and submitted the Minutes of Proceedings 39-2. His anti-Khadr bias surfaced in his current use of “western values,” and his four referrals to Khadr as a “convicted terrorist,” Sorenson’s word-choices are inappropriate. Using “secret” four times (secret payout,” “secret payment,” “secretly” award, and “secret” nature) manipulates the tone of his article, and makes it provocative, and deceitful. His opening statement (i.e. “Everywhere I go”) is a flawed generalization, and does not reflect us, or acquaintances. Like-
wise saying, “Conservatives believe...” is an obvious generalization. His reiteration of “Many folks believe...” and “Many consider...” (versus “some Federal critics”) begs the question “How many is many?” One/two dozen? Hundreds? His generalizations make his closing statement, “The vast majority...” dubious. Did he conduct a valid national poll to determine this “majority,” or is this also a generalization? Sorenson deviates from truth in his second paragraph by stating, “Trudeau’s government has paid millions of taxpayer dollars in compensation to Omar Khadr... refuses to tell Canadians just how much... “ This is untrue because Canadians have been told Khadr received $10.5 million in retribution (roughly half the original requested amount). Reasons for Khadr’s retribution were based on the Standing Committee Report Findings, Recommendations, and Canada’s Obligations (which Harper ignored). Instead of attempting to influence Canadians against the Liberals and against Khadr by spreading misinformation, Sorenson could have informed Canadians the Standing Committee (which
he chaired) reviewed the issues of children “involved in armed conflict,” as they relate to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child” and the Canada-endorsed (2007) UNICEF Principles and Guidelines on Children associated with Armed Forces...”. The Report declared, “a State should not under any circumstances recruit or use in hostilities persons under the age of 18 years” [Article 4.1], and required the “rehabilitation and social reintegration of persons who are victims of acts contrary to this Protocol” (Article 7.1). This Committee Report further noted that 1351 Canadians have been tried and convicted in foreign countries, and repatriated back to Canada (since 1978). So, Khadr is not a “one of” case. Precedents have been set. Albertans expect Sorenson’s Reports to stick to the facts, rather than offering misleading/unfounded inflammatory (anti-Khadr) political rhetoric. We expect better from our elected Member of Parliament. M. R. Leithead Bawlf

Muyres displays DeSoto at Heisler show
By Murray Green
Donald Muyres of Forestburg picked up his 1957 DeSoto about 20 years ago. “I bought from a guy out of Edmonton for $4,000 and drove it to Calmar where my nephew lives. Be damned, the motor went out on it. So I had that all fixed up and then later the transmission went,” recalled Donald. “The only thing that didn’t go was the rear end. There is only about 40,000 miles on the rear end, so it is like new. That’s pretty good for a car of this age.” DeSoto was Chrysler’s quirky mid-lux division. The brand was originally envisioned as a stepping stone into the luxury marque. Dodge and Plymouth enthusiasts like this stylish model. By 1957, the horsepower races had already started, and Chrysler was at the head of the pack with their hemi power plants. In the DeSoto Fireflite, it was a 341 cubic inch hemi that used a single four barrel carburetor to make a very stout 295 horsepower, enough to push these gorgeous cars to more than 125 mph. “I had a guy do all of the body work on it and it cost me $4,000, which wasn’t cheap back then,” said Muyres, who has been a mailman for 55 years. “I retired about three years ago. “My brother and I first worked on a blue one. We put into it about $60,000 after we dragged it out of a slough. We took the body right off and sand blasted it. When we were done it was a nice car,” said Donald. “The last time I went to the show and shine in Camrose, I brought three cars. I like to go all over to the various car shows and meet people. I don’t go as much anymore because I can hardly walk.” Although DeSoto’s
original concept was introduced as a high performance four seater, the car was initially sold as a traditional coupe and convertible. At the front of this coupe’s sculpted body, a thick bumper centres a well-designed grille below chrome-trimmed headlights. At the sides of the car’s body, clean fenders flow into traditional fins behind great looking colour sweeps. The standard transmission in the Fireflite Sportsman is a 3-speed TorqueFlite feeding a 3.36-geared rear end. Donald’s love for this classic cost him a bit over the years. “It has a 341 motor. I was driving to Hardisty for a show and the oil pressure gauge went up and I took out a rod bearing, so I had to overhaul the motor again,” he said shaking his head. “I had to get parts from the
States. I don’t have trouble getting parts for this car.” “The tires came from California. They are special 14 inch ones that cost me about $200 each, then shipping and installation was on top of that.” Hernando de Soto was considered North America’s ultimate adventurer. His next project for the all original DeSoto will be to lift the dash that is sagging a bit from sitting in the hot sun in the summer. “I keep the car in a shed on a cement floor with a rug on it. I keep the shed heated all year round to give it a good home.” This classy DeSoto is a super cool cruiser that’s easy to imagine as the focal point of a cross-country road trip. With its burly V8, tailored interior and dramatic styling, it represents the pinnacle of American styling and manufacturing dominance.

Sustainable gardening By Lori Larsen On Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. the Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Society (CWSS) will be hosting its final summer event at the Stoney Creek Centre, featuring Takota Coen of Grass Roots Family Farm, presenting on permaculture. Coen will speak about how their 250 acre organic farm uses permaculture design, gardening with livestock, forest gardening, water harvesting, and other methods to create a living system that is earth restorative and sustainably produces high quality and great tasting food. He will also be offering attendees samples of the food produced through permaculture. “Coen will explain about how they have designed their farm so that as many things as possible work naturally,” said Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Coordinator Carson Hvenegaard. “Different plants and animals feed and help each other and terraforming reduces the need for irrigation. It allows them (Coens) to grow an amazing variety of plants and animals using far fewer inputs and also ensures that the land remains healthy and doesn’t strip the soil of moisture, nutri-
ents, or organic matter or destroy natural biodiversity like many industrial farming methods do. That’s the basis of permaculture, mimicking natural processes to keep the ecosystem healthy.” Topics for the evening’s presentation will include: permaculture design, gardening with livestock, forest gardening and water harvesting. Takota has helped steward Grass Roots Family Farm since 1988. In addition to farming Takota works to empower others with the tools and resources to design and implement resilient living systems that are earth restorative. He holds a Permaculture Design Certificate from The Permaculture Research Institute, a Holistic Management Certificate from HMI, and a Red Seal Certificate for Carpentry. Draws for the community donated prizes will be made at the Aug. 3 event. For more information on this event or any of the previous events, contact CCWS coordinator Carson Hvenegaard by emailing carsonhv@gmail.com or by telephone at 780-672-0544. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
