initiative. All proceeds will be directed to Camrose Women’s Shelter. Last year over $23,000 was raised during this novel, but exciting, fundraiser. Hoping to surpass this amount as a result of Thursday’s high-profile walk, this year the money will be used to support the Shelter’s Second Stage Housing initiative. Second Stage housing is defined as stable, longer-term, self-contained, safe, affordable private living units for women fleeing domestic violence and supported programming for service recipients.

It’s another milestone for the local Shelter’s mandate, which has been doing amazing work for 30-plus years.

Wine Soaked Preachers sing good old country music Sunday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m.

The Wine Soaked Preachers play good, oldfashioned country and western music.

Alberta residents, The Wine Soaked Preachers, may have started out as a Corb Lund tribute band, but they’ve graduated to one of

the province’s most entertaining roots bands.

In 2016, the Calgarybased band released their second album, Same Old Town, which charted on college radio stations across the country.

The four-piece band has

been busy playing saloons and festivals across Alberta, spreading the gospel of country and western music.

They rocked the BVJ stage in 2016, and they’ll be taking it up a notch on the BVJ main stage in 2017.

It started with a shuffle beat in a room with two likeminded musicians in the most unusual of locales (Edmonton) for a punk rock-country band.

The beginnings were humble, but the evolution was far from that. Like a beautiful whiskey aging in an oak barrel or a crisp, golden ale fermenting in a vat, the music evolved into a delectable cacophony of art and joy.

Consistent gigs and a pickup truck full of songs in their repertoire kept this four-piece band grooving and growing stronger in the Canadian music scene. Echoing the sentiments of their heroes, their brand of country is fused with attitude and high energy.

Urban defies gravity in country music

“I have a real appreciation for the long, colorful, diverse musical road I’ve taken to get here,” Urban explained of his musical journey. “All through my youth in Australia, I got to play in so many different situations. I grew up in Tamworth, which is sort of the country music capitol of Australia, playing and competing there, but I also formed my own band playing West Coast Rock stuff that I loved. Then I got a job as a musical director for a cabaret singer, so I was learning “Twelfth of Never” and “Viva Las Vegas” too.

It doesn’t matter whether I am playing a backyard barbecue or on stage at the Big Valley Jamboree, I believe you can make that personal connection with an audience,” said Tracy who is in the process of writing material for her third solo album, one that will follow her 2004 release You Go Girl and her 2008 effort I’m Not That Girl Anymore.

Reiterating that the songs she sings “have to be a reflection of real life”, Millar feels she is “on the edge of a new chapter as an artist.” Sensing she has hit her stride as a writer expectations, from this woman who has continually set her sights high, are built on the touchstones to yesterday and material inspired by her multi-faceted life.

It’s an altered direction in the sense that this will be an acoustic, unplugged affair, one that should dovetail nicely with albums that touched on her love of traditional country music and a number of songs that didn’t disguise her love for the bluegrass tradition.

Coming off an itinerary that found her playing major

festivals not only in western Canada, but Chicago, the 2010 Winter Olympics, and opening for Tim McGraw, Tracy still grins when she’s asked about bluegrass superstar Rhonda Vincent singing on her last recording.

It’s a great story that bears repeating, as Tracy confidently but politely asked Vincent, following a Vincent concert if she would consider being a guest vocalist on a “Spread A Little Love Around.” It wasn’t long and Vincent put harmonies on the song along with enlisting her brother Darren Vincent from Ricky Skaggs’ band Kentucky Thunder to also sing on the track.

In a sense, that story sums up the manner in which Tracy approaches her art and life. She’s grounded, understands who she is, what her strengths are, what makes her tick, what affects her on a deeper level, and does her best to channel it into song and singing, and believes that others will continue to be moved by her music.

So far, so good, and there’s no reason to believe it won’t be more of the same as the next chapter in Tracy’s journey.

Fifteen years after his first-ever BVJ performance, Keith Urban will be returning to the main stage! Urban’s “ripCORD World Tour 2017” follows the spring 2016 release of his eighth studio album, RIPCORD, which has already produced three No. 1 singles – the Grammy nominated “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16,” “Break On Me,” and “Wasted Time,” which stayed atop the charts for two weeks and became Urban’s 21st No. 1 record. Australian-born and Alberta-raised, Gord Bamford stands as one of the most decorated artists in Canadian country music with an impressive 24 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) awards, multi Juno nominations and the only two-time winner out of Nashville’s Country Music Association (CMA) receiving the 2013 and 2015 CMA Global Country Artist award.

But it is his distinctive sound and songwriting ability that defines Bamford as

one of country music’s best neotraditional artists and like so many others that have come before him; Bamford is not an overnight success. He has spent the better part of the last 20 years honing his craft, working to get where he is today.

Bamford’s seventh studio album, Tin Roof, winner of the 2016 CCMA Album of The Year, was released in April of 2016 with Sony Music Entertainment Canada. Tin Roof follows the Juno Nominated Country Junkie album and it’s Number 1 Billboard hit song “When Your Lips are so Close.” The three-time CCMA Male Artist of the Year is a writer on 12 of the 15 tracks for the new album and collaborated with distinguished songwriter/ producer Phil O’Donnell (Blake Shelton, Tyler Farr, George Strait).

“Phil and I instantly connected in the studio. Working with him really brought a fresh, new sound to this album and I’m really proud of the results,” said Gord.

“Phil is truly a genius in the studio. I’m looking forward to getting out on the road and playing this new material live.

The Gord Bamford Charitable Foundation has generated almost $2.5 million since its inception in 2008 for charities such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and numerous children’s hospitals across Canada and MUSICOUNTS. “Those organizations have had an impact on my life and that’s why we do what we do. It’s always great to get out, play music, be on stage and wake up every morning loving what I do.

But probably the greatest thing I get to do is interact with a lot of these children and try to make a difference in their lives. It’s hard to comprehend but it’s an awesome thing to see a kid’s face light up who is really sick and all he wants to do is go to Disneyland. It puts it all into perspective as to why I think God put me on earth to do what I do because it’s helping other people.”

Country music legend Nelson is no stranger Friday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

With a six-decade career and 200 plus albums, this iconic Texan is the creative genius behind the historic recordings of Crazy, Red Headed Stranger and Stardust.

Willie Nelson has earned every conceivable award as a musician and amassed reputable credentials as an author, actor, and activist. He continues to thrive as a relevant and progressive musical and cultural force.

In the last five years alone he delivered 10 new album releases, released a Top 10 New York Times’ bestsellers book, again headlined Farm Aid, an event he co-founded in 1985, received his fifth degree black belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul, headlined the last three years of the on-going Luck Reunion food and music festival at his ranch in Luck, TX during SXSW, announced the launch of his cannabis company Willie’s Reserve, and graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Grammy Award-winning group, Little Big Town consisting of members Karen Fairchild, Phillip Sweet, Kimberly Schlapman and Jimi Westbrook first entered the music scene more than 18 years ago with hits such as “Boondocks,” “Bring It On Home,” “Good As Gone” and the Grammy-nominated single “Little White Church.” With albums Tornado and Pain Killer, they have seen massive success with Number 1 singles “Pontoon,” “Tornado,” “Day Drinking,” and most recently the history-making, best-selling country single of 2015, with “Girl Crush.”

In October 2014, the group fulfilled a career milestone and lifelong dream when Reba McIntire asked them to become the newest mem-

bers of the Grand Ole Opry; two weeks later, they were inducted. Little Big Town recently released their brand new single “Better Man” to country radio. “Better Man” is the first single off of the group’s forthcoming seventh studio album entitled The Breaker. Next year, the Ryman Auditorium and Little Big Town will team up for the historic venue’s first-ever residency, “Little Big Town At The Mother Church.” The group will headline six nights throughout the year with the first one falling on the day of their album release.

Fox sings about life down on Canadian farms Friday, Aug. 4 at 3:30 p.m.

In 1988, a young man set down a long rolling gravel road. In the distance a small yellow farmhouse faded from view. Leaving the safety of his home in the foothills of southern Alberta, George Fox was about to get the break he had long hoped for.

On that clear spring day he could never have imagined the amazing success story he was about to become.

It is now more than a dozen years since that fateful drive. Fox has a mantle of country music awards, he has recorded eight albums and there is a street named after him in his hometown.

George has traveled the world, opened for some of

the biggest names in country music and headlined sold out shows coast to coast. Growing up in Cochrane, the son of cattle ranchers Gert and Bert Fox, George was like a lot of rural kids – he lived, breathed and worked the farm. One day he arrived home from school and casually told his parents he was starting a rock band. Little did anyone know that the seeds for the future had been sown. In 1981, George went to Sweden on a farm exchange program. The host farmer asked Fox to bring along some country albums and it wasn’t long before Fox also took to the music.

Upon his return to Alberta, he decided he should

devote another five years to ranching, but fate had other plans. Soon Fox was back playing music, writing songs, and a short while later, with his life savings, he went into the recording studio. The end results were tapes he could sell at local shows. In 1988, one of those recordings passed through a series of hands, eventually landing on the desk of a Warner Music executive. A short while later a phone call from the label took George from the safety of the foothills and set the wheels in motion for what was to become an extraordinary career. With the release of his first self-titled album in 1988 country music fans discovered Fox.

Moskaluke will be mixing it up at BVJ Friday, Aug. 4 at 5 p.m.

With her collective YouTube views to date just shy of 20,000,000, the past few years have been a whirlwind year for country songstress Jess Moskaluke (MDM Recordings Inc./EMI Music Canada), a Tyler Ward Featured Artist who rocked the stage on a 45-city tour with his camp throughout North America in 2011.

A self-proclaimed nighthawk, the road is her oyster; late night gigs and travel schedules do not faze this budding talent, wearing her signature stilettos and sporting her long dark rocker-chic hair.

John Wayne once said, “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway,” these words mean everything to Moskaluke.

She can still hear her father sharing this, encouraging her as she contemplated what the future might hold. Sadly, he passed away in 2006 after a lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis, but his memory lives on in Jess’ music.

Now years later, she is

well on her way to a promising career with industry accolades, a new album release on the books and a rapidly growing fan base. In reflection Jess shares, “My dad is my hero for teaching me how to be brave, and that being brave is not the absence of fear, but rather in the presence of fear possessing the ability to overcome these emotions and persevere.” An interesting aside, if it wasn’t for her parents support and encouragement, her future may have been very different as Jess states, “I would have been a parole officer!”

Her career began as a small town girl in Saskatchewan at the age of 15, entering local contests to share her music with the world, as so many aspiring artists do.

Her debut single “Amen Hallelujah” rocked the Canadian radio airwaves and has received over a half a million views on YouTube. Defined by her powerful vocals, in Jess’ words the song is “a fun, uptempo country song about what it’s like to finally find

someone that you’re interested in and have an instant attraction to them. A very countryrock, as opposed to countrypop song, I like to mix it up a bit sometimes,” she said with a mischievous smile.

The journey has been a winding road, with many highlights in this young career. In 2005, Jess was awarded the title of “Most Promising Entertainer” at a local talent competition, and went on to win second place the following year (in the same competition). Following this, she placed in the Top 200 at the 2008 Canadian Idol competition. Unfortunately, she was unable to compete due to a severe case of laryngitis. The accolades continued as Jess was also the champion of the 2010 Painted Hand Idol and the 2010 620 CKRM Big Country Talent Search; the very same local competition that she entered a few short years ago in 2005. She capped off 2011 winning the Big Dog 92-7/Astral Media’s The Next Big Thing competition.

In 1974, Rolling Stone ran a cover story on Tanya Tucker with the headline that said “You’re Gonna Hear From Me.” Truer words have never been spoken.

For four decades, her sultry voice and vivacious stage presence has helped to make her one of the most admired and respected female vocalists in the Country Music genre.

Tanya’s reign includes 23 Top 40 albums and a string of 56 Top 40 singles, 10 of which reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts. Big & Rich provide the kick at launch party Thursday, Aug. 3 at 11 p.m.

They are America’s Technicolor cowboys, brothers-in-arms in service to the creed that great music has no boundaries. Individually, John Rich and Big Kenny Alphin are first-rate musicians, songwriters, producers and entertainers. Together, they are one of the most truly original musical forces ever unleashed on a welcoming world.

With the release of Hillbilly Jedi, they reassert their position as modern music’s best party soundtrack with songs like “Party Like Cowboyz,” “Rock the Boat” and “Get Your Game On.” As might be expected, though, given the wide sweep of their talent, they do a great deal more. Their music has always displayed great range, with well-crafted songs about love, loss, patriotism and social issues all interspersed among those party anthems, and that is especially true here.

Hillbilly Jedi covers a great deal of stylistic ground, from “Last Words,” which John describes as “Roy Orbison meets Queen,” and “Lay It All On Me,” a meditation on happiness and love set amid a hauntingly beautiful track complete with choir, to “’Cause I Play Guitar,” a bluesy bauble celebrating the fruits of the rocking life.

And if there is any doubt about the anticipation level for this, their first album since 2007’s Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace, it can be put to rest by the fact that Hillbilly Jedi’s lead single, “That’s Why I Pray,” became their fastest riser since “Lost In This Moment,” which climbed to the top of the charts five years earlier.

“When you’ve got two songwriters,” said John, “some people wonder why we’d record something we didn’t write, but we are in a position to take the greatest music we can get our hands on, and if something brilliant and poignant like ‘That’s Why I Pray’ comes along, we don’t care who wrote it.”

“I was surprised at how well it did right off the bat,” adds Kenny, “but I felt very positive that it was the kind of song that would make a difference.”

Big & Rich have, of course, made a difference,

exploding into the public consciousness in 2003 as that rarest of breeds – true country music game changers.

With 2004’s triple-platinum Horse of a Different Color, they were able to tap into the best strands of a wide spectrum of popular music, filter them through their pens and voices and produce a sound that is instantly recognizable, if not classifiable.

The title Hillbilly Jedi comes from a line in the album’s opener, “Born Again.”

“It came out in a writing session we were doing with Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi,” said Kenny. “We got to that line and Bon Jovi stops and says, ‘Hillbilly Jedi?’

That’s it! I’d buy that shirt.’

We were like, ‘Hey, that’s about as descriptive as you can get of what we are.’” “’Born Again’ is slammin’, and it kind of explains where we’ve been and what we’re doing – ’making little babies and writing big songs,’ that’s the first line of the song,” says John. “Then it goes into the chorus, with Richie Sambora shredding the guitar, and the big harmonies with Bon Jovi and Big & Rich together. It’s a really cool record.”

Also contributing to the proceedings is Cowboy Troy, whose rapping adds to the energy and attitude of “Rock the Boat” and “Get Your Game On.” At the production helm is Dann Huff, whose credits as a musician include Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, and as a producer range from Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts to Megadeth.

“We thought it was important to put a new sonic feel to what we do,” says John, “but we wanted somebody with a fresh perspective on what we do. We didn’t want to concentrate on the technicalities, but on singing the fire out of everything we could, really making a statement with every syllable coming out of our mouths and letting Dann handle the sonic end. For us, it was perfect.”

“He’s an amazing talent,” added Kenny, “and he just wanted us to do our thing. He pushed the edge as much as we do, and it was a great experience.”

As Hillbilly Jedi finds the duo on top of their studio game, their live performances find them at their hellraising best, with crowds as intense and appreciative as any they’ve ever faced.

“It seems like when you put John and Kenny together and we become Big & Rich, it’s like Clark Kent walking into the phone booth and coming out a superman,” says John. “We can’t explain it. It’s like a chemical reaction between Kenny and me on stage, something you can feel there – Hillbilly Jedi, the force is with you. It’s funny to think about but it’s really true, we walk out on stage and start laying into this thing, the energy goes back and forth between us and the crowd and it’s palpable.”

Aldean evolving into superstar status Sunday, Aug. 6 at 9 p.m.

For anyone looking to brand Jason Aldean as part of a significant musical movement, good luck.

There’s a lot about the singer that’s become familiar during his five years as a country hitmaker, after all, he has spent more weeks at No. 1 on the radio charts than any other country artist in the last 12 months. But none of what he does comes out quite like anyone else.

with new things,” he said matter-of-factly in a converted barn on his Nashvillearea farm. “What makes you different and more creative than the other guys is taking something to an extreme and making it better without ripping anybody else off. I think that’s the key. The great ones figure it out and are constantly evolving, and that’s what makes ‘em great.”

With My Kinda Party, the Academy of Country Music’s former Top New Male Vocalist further cements his uniqueness with a robust15-track project that builds on his personal past while covering new territory. The first single-the muscular title track-fit very quickly into the jacked-up portion of his concert set list, which already boasts “She’s Country,” “Crazy Town” and “Johnny Cash.” But there’s other stylistic landscape to explore, too-his first fullfledged duet, with big-voiced pop singer Kelly Clarkson; and an almost rap segment in

“Dirt Road Anthem” that suggests Aldean has listened to a little Snoop Dogg in his time.

Aldean was the first country artist of any significance to incorporate Guns N’ Roses medleys into his live show-”You’re welcome” is his simple response-and his listening history includes such diverse talents as Aerosmith, the Oak Ridge Boys and even Tupac Shakur.

“I grew up listenin’ to all kinds of music-rock and southern rock and country and blues and rap stuff, too,” he said. “My cousin, who’s five months older than me, he went through his rap phase when we had 2Pac in the car all the time. Really, I’m a fan of all kinds of music.”

While critics will gravitate to the extremes on My Kinda Party, the essence of the album is simply the solidity of its material. By selling 3.5 million records in the first phase of his career, Aldean commanded the attention of Nashville’s song-

writers as he put together music for the album. With volumes of Music Row’s best craftsmen and women writing for Aldean, he literally had the pick of the litter.

As a result, My Kinda Party is stocked with inviting melodies and intriguing storylines, many of them tugging on the small-town themes that have become the backbone of his persona. “Fly Over States,” “Church Pew” and “Tattoos On This Town” exemplify Aldean’s affection

for the topic, though it’s often misunderstood.

While country has plenty of bumper-sticker anthems that celebrate small communities, Aldean is more than a simple cheerleader for rural values. He does indeed take on the role of heartland defender in “Fly Over States,” but other songs find him grappling with the heartbreak and limitations that accompany towns with three- and four-digit populations.

Young is collecting awards along the way Sunday, Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Chris Young has accomplished more by 29 than some artists do in a lifetime.

Already a Grammy-nominated recording artist, he’s also a dynamic live performer consistently in demand, an international ambassador for his genre, a talented songwriter with six Number 1 songs to his name – by the way, he wrote four of them – and a handsome charmer to boot. Now, with the release of his fourth album, A.M., the man known for his classic baritone and melt-yourheart ballads knows how to have a good time, too.

Still, when all is said and done, it only takes two words to sum up the career of Chris Young: Definitely country.

“I’ve always loved country music, and I really liked singing it as a kid,” Young remembers. “So I was like, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ I just kind of always knew.”

His first record purchase was Keith Whitley’s L.A. to Miami, followed by the likes of Randy Travis, Tracy Lawrence and Brooks and Dunn.

He sang so much around the house that he jokes his parents “blocked him out.” But as puberty approached, the young tenor found himself facing adversity for the first

time. “I was singing all of Vince Gill’s stuff, and then my voice changed,” Young laughs. “For about a year there, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m ruined. It’s the end of the world!’ And then I realized I could sing Randy Travis songs. It worked out well.”

That’s something of an understatement for the Mur-

freesboro, TN native. Blessed with parents who encouraged his art, Young soon found his way into musical theatre, jazz training, and six years of classical voice, which honed his emerging baritone into something truly special. In his early teens, Young convinced his mom to drive him into Nashville so he could sit

in with bands and work with local songwriters; by 16, he’d formed a band with some older guys from Middle Tennessee State University, and they started playing George Strait and Garth Brooks covers in whatever clubs would have them. “I was entirely too young to be playing in bars,” Young says. “I would have these big Xs in chunky black marker on my hands. I can’t imagine we were that good, but really, that was me enjoying the heck out of what I did.”

Everyone starts somewhere, and Young was starting to hone his craft. “People were telling me to learn to write songs,” he says. “I’d written poems and stuff, but I didn’t really know how.

Which is funny, because you don’t necessarily have to know how to write a song.

You just sit down and create something. You make it up.” He cut his first independent record after high school, using his own money to fund 500 or so CDs and take himself on a short tour of Florida, where he played mostly Borders bookstores.

“One day, I played to three people,” Young remembers.

“Two were playing chess, and the other person was reading a book. When I said, ‘Well, this will be my last

song,’ the lady reading the book clapped.”

If you’re starting to think, Wow, this kid has a work ethic, you’re getting the idea. Three semesters at Nashville’s Belmont University and a short stint at MTSU taught him he wasn’t cut out for college life.

Instead, he picked up more than a diploma interning for a song publishing company owned by Laura Stroud, the wife of his future producer, James Stroud. Soon after, he scored an offer for a regular weekly gig as the frontman for the house band at Cowboys Dancehall in Arlington, one of the biggest country clubs in Texas. He dropped out of college, and began earning an equivalent of a Ph.D in the honky tonks of Texas, where he played more than 150 dates a year. He was 20. “We would open for anybody who came through – Lonestar, Dwight Yoakam.

That’s where I got real experience working with a band, lights, in-ear monitors, everything. I’m pretty lucky,” he admits. “When I dropped out of college and moved to Texas, my parents didn’t disown me.”

Williams and Ree crack up BVJ crowds Saturday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m.

Williams and Ree, aka The Indian and The WhiteGuy, are one of the longest running and most successful comedy/ music teams in history. Politically incorrect and proud of it, the duo reigns supreme as the quintessential antidote to staid and stagnant entertainment choices.

Bruce Williams and Terry Ree met in the Black Hills of South Dakota and formed a union stronger than most marriages. They began touring the country primarily as a musical act but soon incorporated their unique brand of humour into the show.
