Camrose Police Service officially added new Police Chief Mark Neufeld to the staff during a change of command ceremony on July 31.

Chief Neufeld started last week with acting chief Lee Foreman bringing him up to speed on Camrose events and policing issues.

“It has been way busier than I thought it would be,” said Chief Neufeld, reflecting on his first week. “The members here are handling all kinds of different things.

They have been very busy just in operational calls– that is not counting all of the planning that goes into BVJ (Big Valley Jamboree), which is a huge injection of work. There hasn’t been a spare moment, so I have been surprised at how busy it has been. I have been pleasantly surprised of the quality of work and the amount of dedication I have seen.”

Over the past 24 years, he has been with the Edmonton Police Service, lastly in the position of superintendent of southwest division.

The Police Service also celebrated the new colours and crest during the ceremony.

“The timing worked out well because the flag came in just in time. It was probably more good luck than good management,” joked the chief. “What a great symbol for leadership and responsibility in the organization from a traditional prospective. To use that along with the change of command ceremony was awesome,” said Chief Neufeld.

Foreman took over as acting chief after former chief Darrell Kambeitz retired. “The morale seems to be very good, the members seem to have what they need and the bottom line in the first month will be focused on building relationships by talking with members to get a feel of what their experiences are like and what things they

That is a sign of how safe the community is and typically they don’t have to worry about that. It is fairly clear to me, just over the last week, that anything we can do to make that a little harder, would be a good thing.”

The Neufeld family will be moving shortly. “We sold our house and recently purchased one in Camrose. We hope to move into the community as early as midSeptember.

Karla has always had a passion for event decorating, so when the opportunity came to purchase an event management business in her hometown, she couldn’t resist. “I love trying different options for décor and seeing what works well together. There are individual design aspects that you might not think would work well together, but once you combine all the elements – Wow!” With previous experience in marketing and PR, she loves that her new business allows her to put her creative side to use every day. Since taking over the business in April, Karla has added her own personal touches, including changing up the shop layout and increasing her online presence, including Facebook and Instagram pages.

Another Tammy recorded a smash hit in 1968, Stand

by Your Man, but it certainly describes in large part the way Tammy Graham approaches her life. As vice president of The Auto Shoppe since 1978, Tammy has stood by her man Gord through the years as the business struggled at first, grew steadily, hit some rocky patches, grew more and now is Camrose’s leading collision repair centre.

“She always listened,” says Gord. “She was a sounding board and a mentor and an unbelievable partner. It’s her demeanor, and not just with me, with our kids too and many others. She’s a very giving person who puts others first.”

One of her roles at The Auto Shoppe has always been a supportive one.

She’s the “social convenor,” the one who remembers staff birthdays (Tammy’s birthday is today, by the way) and helps keep morale up. More than that however, she’s got a talent for numbers, giving Gord a daily report on the business. She does the banking, is involved in the accounting and now she also has a new role, safety officer, which is a natural fit for someone who cares about others the way Tammy does.

On a day when I had a turbulent heart, I remembered a visit to the Jade Buddha of Peace a few years back.

It was about as unlikely a combination as you’ll find on a glorious summer day in rural Alberta. The statue of a slim, youthful, cross-legged Buddha—weighing about 15 tons and over four meters high.

Carved from a mammoth boulder of gem-quality jade mined in northwestern British Columbia, Canada possibly the single largest mass of jade ever hauled out of the Earth.

Commissioned by an Australian couple. Shipped from Vancouver to Thailand, where master artists and craftsmen freed the smiling, meditating figure of Buddha from the green gemstone.

Consecrated by the Dalai Lama. On a world tour promoting universal peace. At its only Alberta stop, located in the Westlock Meditation Centre, in a field near the Town of Westlock, surrounded by grain fields and pastures.

An organizer of the Jade Buddha’s visit to the Westlock Mediation Centre was quoted as saying, “Our hope is that when people see the Buddha they take a moment to reflect on peace. We want to capitalize on the theme of universal peace and internalize it, because inner peace leads to outer peace. When we have inner peace, everything we do externally reflects that.”

I expected to be impressed and I was. I expected to think about peace and I did. But my reflections took me some places I hadn’t anticipated.

Creating a welcoming hub of activity

By Lori Larsen Imagine a place where you walk in the doors and feel the weight of social pressure lifted and you are surrounded by a sense of acceptance, the freedom to learn and, above all, a feeling of family. For library director, Deb Cryderman, that feeling, for anyone who comes to the library, is a vital part of what she considers to be part of her job description.

“For me, libraries are the great social equalizer,” said Cryderman with her usual joyous passion.

“Everyone who comes in the door is equal no matter what their income is, what they do for a living, where they sleep at night, what their religion is or who they love.

“It is one place you can walk into where there is no stigma attached.”

“I remember I was studying for exams in the library when the news came on about the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. The library, for me, was where things happened.”

After high school, Deb became a summer reading programmer at the Fernie Public Library for three years until attending Lethbridge University where she continued her passion as a library page while completing her studies.

While in Lethbridge, Deb worked in retail but felt a degree of happiness was missing, so volunteered at the library. Realizing if she wanted to be totally happy in her work,

The statue was amazing–even more impressive than I expected. The surrounding flowers and fruit and artifacts enhanced the presence of the Jade Buddha. Obviously much care went into adorning the space around the Buddha. But did I feel peaceful? When I focused on the Jade Buddha, yes, I felt peaceful. But when I paid attention to the environment? Not so much.

On the pavilion in front of the Jade Buddha, a singer was entertaining the thousands of visitors, passing around a hat for contributions. This was not Buddhist chanting.

This was pop singing for pure entertainment.

In stalls and large tents were kiosks selling clothes, food, and lots of other things. Healthy lively commerce was much in evidence.

At first I was a bit surprised. I expected to feel the contrast of the Jade Buddha surrounded by Western Canadian farm country. But I did not expect to feel the same kind of commercial hustling atmosphere I’ve experienced at typical tourist trap places. ***

Sometime later I remembered a few things.

Of course there would be entertainment. As one of the organizers said to me, “We knew with this many people and lots of children, we would have to provide some entertainment” (He went on to tell me that Buddhist monks would be chanting that evening).

Of course there would be commerce; opportunities to buy food and drink and trinkets. That’s how people live.

That’s not only good business but an appropriate service to offer thousands of people out in the country far from restaurants. Why would I be uncomfortable with commerce? I was troubled by my own reactions. I felt faintly cheated because the setting didn’t feel sacred or peaceful. And yet…I did eventually come to peace, even with my own lack of inner peace! And isn’t that the point? “Peace” does not mean no noise, no troubles, no work, no commerce, no turbulence, no inner or outer conflict. Peace means finding a peaceful place within no matter what the external circumstances. Peace means acceptance, even of our own turbulence.

A Tai Chi instructor whose name I forget said this: “Anyone can go to the top of a mountain and wear a saffron robe and meditate, and be wise and centered and grounded. What the world needs now is for us to come down from the mountaintop and go into the marketplace and be wise and centered and grounded.” ***

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman spreads the joy of reading and being part of the library to everyone she meets.

At a very early age, Deb developed a love for reading and a soft spot in her heart for the safety and comfort of a library.

“I remember going to the bookmobile in Sudbury (Ontario) with my dad,” she said with an exuberant smile. “It was such a magical time. I got to pick from this selection of books and actually check the books out of the library.”

Deb also fondly recalls her dad reading to her a lot as a child. “Reading has always been something I have associated with love and being loved.”

So it is no wonder that the team at the Camrose library make every effort to ensure library visitors are made to feel welcome.

In Grade 5, Deb and her family, moved to British Columbia where she joined the library club.

“I thought it was a good way to meet people and it was a place where I felt safe.”

she needed to further her eduction, so completed the Library Information Technology program at NAIT. After graduation, she moved to Northwest Territories and worked in a school library for six years then back to Calgary working in special libraries for the oil and gas industry.

After a move to Cranbrook to spend time with her sister and her young son, Deb took a job as the manager of the Stettler Public Library and, in anticipation of directing a larger library one day, applied to do her masters degree at the University of Alberta. After graduation, she heard about an opening at Camrose Public Library, applied and was the successful candidate.

With her six-year anniversary approaching on Sept. 6, she continues to be a vibrant asset to our community and makes it her mission to ensure the library is a place for everyone.

“It (the library) gives access to information and democracy for everyone,” gleamed Deb. “It is the conduit to other organizations that can help people such as taxi tokens, or access to places where they can get social services, mental health services, a meal or housing and can take part in a number of programs.”

This includes the very successful Snacks in the Stacks, an after-school snack program sponsored entirely by the community.

“We noticed children coming in after school and fighting for access on the computer. We recognized the reason they were fighting was because they were hungry. Community partners came together and we made the snack program happen which is totally funded outside the library budget and it happens because there is a need the community saw and supported.”

With strong conviction, Deb recognizes all the partners that make the library the vital service it is to Camrose and area.

“It is a team effort that consists of everybody who works behind a desk here, every volunteer who comes in, the community, the university, all kinds of people from all walks of life.

“Our board is a team of people who are dedicated to the vision of this place.

The City and the County fund us generously because we support the social pillar and help to make Camrose and area a great place to live.”

Beyond the stacks of books, the library has become so much more – a place to sit in the sunlight and read, work on a computer, borrow a bike or baby stroller or partake in one of the many adult and children’s programs.

“We also recognize that a library comes in a variety of forms. We are a bit of a book warehouse and will probably always be one, but we have other ways of teaching people how to do or learn things through our programming.

“It is the community who runs this library because they come to us with a need and we try to fullfil that need.”

On a final note, Deb shared her dreams and visions for the library.

“It is the community’s building and service space.

I want the community to feel like it is their place – another home they can have. We are here to serve to give back ... always.”

Superintendent’s Message On behalf of the teachers, administrators, and support staff, I would like to welcome each and every student to Battle River School Division for the 2017-2018 school year.

This year staff will continue to strive to achieve our vision: Every Student, Every Day, A Success by providing an educational experience focused on the academic, character and relationship development of each student. We have a range of programs and services to meet the needs of students and families. You’ll notice a modified school calendar this year, as well as percentage-based report cards for all students in Grades 7 to 12. Our priorities, at all grade levels, will be focused on: 1. Welcoming and Caring school environments 2. Literacy 3. Numeracy 4. Learning and Teaching (21st century) We’re looking forward to a great year!

New Registrations Please let us welcome you to Battle River! Students new to the school division should register at the school they will be attending and provide a birth certificate when registering.

BUSING SERVICE The first day of busing for all students will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

Students residing in Beaver County, Camrose County and Flagstaff County Students new to these areas should register for bus service by calling the Transportation Department at 780-672-6131 extension #5244, or 1-800-262-4869 extension #5244, well in advance of school opening so that efficient routes can be planned. Students who were transported to a Division-operated school by bus during the last school year will be included in our plans for the 2017-2018 school year.

Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the transportation department.

Students residing in the City of Camrose Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometres from their designated school), will be served first at no cost; those students who were registered in Battle River School Division last year and were eligible for busing will be planned for again this year.

• Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometres from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $395.00 per student in grades 1-12, or $355.50 per ECS student. Registration for busing of non-eligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee.

• Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus pass upon entering the bus.

• Reminder: ALL bus passes must be picked up at the Transportation Office, 6211-48 Avenue.

• Bus passes will be available starting August 21, 2017.

• Bus passes are sold as a year pass. No half-passes or winter passes will be sold.

• We accept payment by cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard and Debit.

Reading University celebrates graduates’ achievements On behalf of BRCF, chair Vivianne Grue expressed sincere congratulations to the students and staff on the completion of another successful Reading University program.

“My hope is that you (students) rediscover that reading is the key to learning and that learning is the key to a full and well lived life.

By Lori Larsen Smiling from cheek to cheek, proud of their wonderful accomplishments, graduates of the 2017 Reading University program took to the middle of the stage on July 28 at the University of Alberta Augustana Faith and Life Chapel, to accept a well-deserved certificate of achievement.

In two separate ceremonies, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., 90 Grade 2 and Grade 3 graduates accepted congratulations from Augustana associate dean of Academic, Dr. Karsten Mundel, teachers and educational assistants to rounds of applause from special guests, donors, family and friends.

Battle River Community Foundation past chairman and director Blain Fowler welcomed guests to the event and began by explaining that Reading University is a Community Leadership Initiative of the Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF).

“We connect the people who are actually doing the work with the people who are prepared to pay for the work that is being done.”

The initiative is supported by the Battle River School Division (BRSD), University of Alberta Augustana Campus and community donors through BRCF. “The school division is responsible for designing the educational program, recruiting the students paying the staff, providing transportation and inviting appropriate children to participate in the program,” explained Fowler.

Speaking on behalf of BRSD, assistant superintendant Shan JorgensonAdam thanked the parents, teachers, staff, volunteers and partners for assisting in providing this valuable opportunity.

“Battle River School Division sets learning to read as one of our highest priorities. Through our partnerships with BRCF, Augustana University and the support of Camrose community services and volunteers we are able to offer this opportunity to some of our most precious resources—our children.

In quoting Dr. Suess, Jorgenson-Adam told the graduates that during their time with the program they read a lot, travelled to a lot of new places and met a lot of new friends.

“My hope is that you have come to love reading even more and you will continue to read books for both enjoyment and to learn new things.”

The University of Alberta Augustana campus provides classroom space, nutritious meals and snacks for the students and lunch time supervisors.

Associate dean of Academic Mundel spoke on behalf of the University and dean Allen Berger.

“Reading University is truly a special program it takes all of us working together to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people.”

In thanking the family members of the graduates, University staff and volunteers, Mundel said with passion, “You clearly know how important literacy is as a foundation for life long

learning, career success, personal success and building a meaningful life.

“And you clearly know how essential it is to develop joyful excited learners in the early elementary grades.”

Mundel applauded the graduates, reminding them of the power of learning through reading with an applicable reference to learning how to make widget spinners and go-carts by reading.

“It is my hope that you had so much fun reading here that you will never stop and you will keep up with your awesome reading skills.”

Mundel invited students to continue visiting the university and expressed his hope that they return in 10 to 12 years as students studying for university degrees.

Fowler continued to thank the partners that contribute to the continual success of Reading University including all the financial supporters. (See acknowledgement of donors on next page.)

“The cost of putting a child through Reading University is approximately $2,000 per student or $100 per day per student and is financed 50/50 by BRSD and BRCF. “ The foundation (BRCF) raises its share with the help of generous and supportive members of the local community. Their contributions cover the costs of meals, field trips, classroom supplies with items such as backpacks, t-shirts for the students as well as a collection of books that they can keep.”

“I hope you have become more excited about the whole process of learning because literacy opens the doors to opportunities.”

On a final note Grue thanked parents for ensuring their children were able to attend, staff for their commitment and dedication to the program, Augustanta and all financial supporters.

“It would not be possible without all the partnering of all these people.”

Misinformation

I am disappointed, but not surprised by MP Kevin Sorenson’s remarks on the Omar Kadar matter.

There are a number of errors in his factual claims.

Kadar has never been convicted by a real court of law. He was convicted by a military court of dubious authority.

He was tortured and threatened with a possible death sentence to elicit a guilty plea.

At the time of the incident he was 15 years of age, a child soldier. Had he been tried in Canada he, almost certainly, would have been acquitted.

Whatever we think of the Taliban, they were fighting in their own country against, from their point of view, foreign invaders.

Like all citizens, Kadar is entitled to go to the Canadian courts for redress against perceived wrongs by anyone including the government.

The Harper Government opposed this strongly and lost in the lower courts.

My understanding is that the advice received by the current government from their legal counsel was they would likely lose at the Supreme Court, so obviously a decision was taken to settle the matter, at a cost to the taxpayer.

Repatriation of their nationals from the military prison was achieved by Great Britain and Australia, so had the Harper Government wanted to bring Kadar home to Canada there would likely have been little opposition from the US. What is secret about the payment? It is widely commented on in the press.

I’m sure Kadar is grateful to the Canadian lawyer who took on his case notwithstanding it would be unpopular with some of the population, but he is also probably thankful that in this country the Rule of Law and Charter of Rights applies to all citizens, whatever their beliefs.

Of course, most Canadians want to support their military, especially the families of those killed, wounded or injured. I too think our vet’s

should receive better care. But that is not the issue we are speaking to.

How do you think your 15-year-old would have reacted in a similar situation under the influence of the adults, including his father who were there and who were killed.

We need to show compassion to all sides. All the information I have is that Omar Kadar has grown up to be a decent young man who will be a credit to this country.

For your information I served in the RCAF for six years during the Cuban crisis during a time we thought a third world war was about to begin. I am also a student of history and have learned that wars usually make things worse.

Canadians should stick to “Peacekeeping.”

Junior Kodiaks add to United States scouting staff

Cory Lonke and Bryan Fuss were added to the Camrose Kodiaks scouting staff. Both are from the United States where they will be focusing efforts in recruitment.

Lonke joins the Kodiaks with strong ties to recently named associate coach Nigel Dube as he served as the head scout for the

Minotauros in the NAHL. “I have worked very closely with Cory. He is very passionate about the game and represents all the characteristics Camrose believes in as an organization. He has also served as a goalie coach moving several goalies on to the NCAA. He has a real eye for talent, but more importantly he does the required work to make

sure the players we bring in are great people,” said Dube.

He will be covering Minnesota high school and Tier 1 elite hockey, based out of the Minneapolis area where he currently coaches high school hockey.

Bryan Fuss is currently the lead skill instructor for Minnesota Made Hockey, an organization based

in Edina, specializing in player skill development.

Part of his role with Minnesota Made is taking top talent to elite tournaments during the spring and summer months.

“Bryan works with elite players on a daily basis and spends many hours in the rink. His strong history in scouting adds connections to many different leagues.

Both Cory and Bryan are strong family people, something the Kodiaks feel is important,” added Dube.

Bryan’s territory includes the rinks in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Camrose Kodiaks welcomed the scouts into the organization in late July.

The Kodiaks main camp opens on Aug. 26 to kick off the 2017-18 pre-season.

The Camrose Red Cougars and Camrose Royal Cougars advanced to the Tier 1 provincials in Spruce Grove on Aug. 4 to 6.

Both squads played the Whitecourt Angels, St. Albert Cardinals, Lacombe Dodgers, Drayton Valley Giants and Parkland Twins.

Heisler Cardinals entered Tier 3 provincials on July 28 to 30 in St. Paul.

The automotive section of

Regular 1955 Chevy turned into a hot ride

Not everybody can claim that their daily driver is a 1955 Chevy 150. But Jamie Beausoliel of Killam drives his classic in the area and attends several car shows.

“I added a few custom touches to it. It has a 454 cc motor with a TH-400 transmission in it and a 10-bolt posy track rear end,” explained Jamie. “It has a brand new interior, aluminum radiator and centre line wheels.”

The 1955 Chevrolet is considered a huge turning point for the manufacturer and a major success. It was available in three models: the 150, 210 and Bel Air. He seized the opportunity to purchase the vehicle.

“Originally, why I bought it was to finish a project that I often thought about earlier in life. My dad had a 150 four-door. It sat in my yard for years and he always said he was going to fix it up. Then he retired and sold it. This style of car was in the back of my head all of the time. When I had an opportunity to buy one, I jumped at the chance.”

The ‘55 Chevy was the first successful Chevrolet with an optional V8 engine.

Chevrolet had produced an earlier car with a V8 in 1918 (Chevrolet Series D), which used a 36-horsepower and 288-cubic-inch V8, but it remained in production for only a year.

“I wanted to add a powerful engine for driving. One day, I hope to put in a really nice engine it,” said Jamie. “I don’t enter 100-footers because I don’t want to be one of those guys who destroys his car. I’ve seen a lot of horror stories of people destroying their vehicles by racing. I don’t think drag racing an eighth of a mile is something that is for this car.”

In 1955, Chevrolet decided to fit its new car with an overhead valve V8 engine design, which was similar to the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 V8 engine.

The new 265-cubic-inch overhead valve V8 was designed to be smaller, lighter and more powerful than previous V8s in the auto industry.

block in the ‘55 Chevy had its problems. It had no oil filter and the factory could only add one externally– owners had to opt for an external oil filter. Those who did not order the engine with the oil filter option had dirty oil in a short amount of time. This was corrected for the next year.

Additionally, Chevrolet drastically changed its body design. It had smooth straight panels on the sides and hood, wrap-around glass on the windshield, and triangular tail lights that jutted outward. This new look, combined with new power and engineering, made the it an instant hit and a critical success.

“The car came with a flip front end on it and it wasn’t very nice. I reworked the flip front end to get it right. It gives it more of a hot rod feel and a different taste in style. You see a lot of them restored with some custom stuff done to it, like this one, and I just continued with it,” said Jamie.

ried over to 1956 and 1957.

“It’s a daily driver and cruising car. I drive to all of the shows, I don’t trailer it. I want to enjoy driving it.

I don’t drive it to work, but rather to get an ice cream or to run an errand,” said Jamie.

“I’ve been around cars all of my life, but I don’t know everything. The nice thing about belonging to a car club is that people share information and you learn a lot. The thing about these tri-fives (1955, 56 and 57) is that you can get all of the parts and completely rebuild it if you have the money.”

The 55’s top trim offering was the Bel-Air, which had more chrome than the 150 or 210. The Bel-Air and 210 could be bought with a post between the front and rear passenger windows, or without a post. Without a post, it was known as a hardtop, which came only in a two-door and was not offered in a four-door hard top until 1956.

The two-door hardtop was also known as the Sport Coupe and it had no

post between the two side windows, it had a slightly shorter roof and longer rear deck.

The ‘55 offered a wide array of colors. One solid color, which was standard for the 150, could be had for the 210 or Bel Air, or 19 dif-

ferent two-tone color combinations were also available.

There were nine different variations of the three models made in 1955 with differences in body, roof type, number of doors, and available equipment, but not all possible combinations were sold.

Bridge replacement tentative schedule for construction Submitted In Camrose, 48th Avenue is a major route that links the local and regional transportation network.

The roadway between 51 Street and 54 Street is the busiest section and, with the growing population of Camrose, this section requires improvements to support the growth.

The bridge within this section has served Camrose for over 55 years and has reached the end of its life.

Along with replacing the bridge, the project will add an extra lane to both the eastbound and westbound directions to accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic.

The future seven-lane roadway between 51 and 54 Street will be constructed by extending the acceleration lane on the westbound road.

The additional eastbound lane will start from the 53 Street intersection and taper off before 51 Street.

The 48th Avenue Bridge Replacement and Capacity Improvement project also includes decreasing the slope

of the roadway between 51 Street and 53 Street. The change in slope will increase traffic safety and efficiency.

To improve pedestrian convenience and safety, there will also be a new underground pedestrian bypass constructed near the east side of the lake. The underpass will cross the bridge north to south and allow access between the north Mirror Lake trails and Jubilee Park.

The design for the project has been finalized; the bids were received on June 15 and the contract has been awarded to PSA Construction. The final accepted budget is $6.7 million, which is $1.3 million lower than the original $8 million budget.

The exact dates for construction have not been finalized, but the following is the tentative schedule of the construction timeline which will be done in two phases.

The first phase is set to begin in mid-August and end by late October during which the majority of the work will likely be in Mirror Lake.

The second phase is the

construction on the bridge and roadway which is planned to start in early April 2018 and go to the end of August 2018.

During Phase 2, 48 Avenue between 51 Street and 54 Street is expected to be fully closed to allow the removal of the old bridge and the construction of the new bridge and roadway. The detour plan is still tentative, but the City expects that all other crossings such as Camrose Drive, Grand Drive, 44 Avenue, 47 Avenue and 54 Avenue will become busier.

The City and the selected contractor will work together to provide a safe and efficient detour plan to minimize congestion and inconvenience.

The Rosalind Athletics won the opening game of the championship series 7-1 on Aug. 1. However, Holden came back with a close 8-7 win in the second match to force a final game.

Rosalind may have the home field advantage, but Holden won both games in the regular season matchup.

The third game of the series is slated for Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. in Rosalind.

By Lori Larsen Camrose Police Service reminds residents to lock up their vehicles. It is the first line of protection against the theft of and from your vehicle and may very well be all it takes to deter potential crime.

“We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of stolen vehicles and property stolen from within vehicles in all areas of Camrose,” said Camrose Police Service crime prevention officer Constable Kelly Bauer.

CPS reports six stolen vehicles within Camrose in the last two weeks.

Four of those vehicles were unlocked with the keys in the vehicle.

“The message that we want to get out to the public is for everyone to simply lock up their vehicles!”

It only takes a couple seconds to lock your vehicle just like it only takes a couple seconds to steal an unlocked vehicle.

“We have seen unlocked vehicles stolen while the owner went into a business for a couple minutes, however we have also seen vehicles stolen from people’s driveways and garages,” commented Bauer.

“The common denominator is that the vehicles were left unlocked and the keys were accessible to the suspect.

Car hoppers go from vehicle to vehicle at night checking to see if a vehicle is locked or unlocked.

“If the thief doesn’t steal the vehicle then they will steal electronic devices, sunglasses, purses, wallets, personal information or anything else of value. It doesn’t matter what part of the City you live in because all areas have been victimized.”

Even if your vehicle is locked, it is still advisable to remove any valuables while away from your vehicle or at the very least put them away out of sight.

Car hoppers will also use garage door openers in unlocked vehicles to gain access to garages, possibly attached homes and then steal from there.

“Leaving your vehicle unlocked is an open invitation for a thief! Please remove your valuables, remove your keys and lock your vehicles and protect yourself from being an easy target,” urged Bauer.

If you hear or see anything suspicious contact police and if you feel you are witnessing a criminal offence (theft) in progress call 911.

December 13, 1931 ~ July 29, 2017 Norman Henderson was born on December 13, 1931 to Earl and Mary Henderson of Duvernay Alberta.

He attended school in Duvernay and Fort Saskatchewan. While still in his teens, he started working for the Canadian Exploration Company at Red Water and Peace River. Norm eventually transferred with the company to Edberg in 1952 where he met Irma Boden. Norm and Irma were married on March 6, 1953 at Ferry Point Lutheran Church.

Norm worked for Boden Brothers Construction until 1971 when they decided to start Henderson Trucking Company.

In 1975, the family moved to Camrose and eventually bought an acreage in 1985 on the outskirts of town. Norm and his boys hauled gravel and asphalt all over Alberta. An accident in 1995 ended Norm’s trucking career and the decision was made to sell the trucks. The next year, Norm and Irma sold the acreage and moved into Camrose where they resided for nineteen years.

Norm passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital on July 29, 2017 at the age of 85 years with family at his side.

Norm is survived by his wife of over sixty-four years, Irma; three sons Reg (Kathy) of Camrose, Murray (Cheryl) of Bawlf and Mark (Aileen) of Edberg; daughter Trudy of Victoria, BC; grandchildren Lindsay (Trevor) Urkow, Ashley (Dave) Bolivar, Scott (Michelle) Hauser, Kristopher (Kali) Hauser, Shelby Henderson, Nicolas Hauser, Brodie, Olivia and Paul Henderson; great-grandchildren Ethan Urkow and Jackson Ryan Bolivar; brother Lawrence (Dorothy); sisters Florence Kotow and Karen (Art) Anderson of Langley, BC; and sisters-in-law Georgette Henderson of Edmonton and June Henderson of Vancouver, BC. Norm was predeceased by his grandson Ryan Henderson; parents Earl and Mary; three brothers Alex, Ray and Jim; and two sisters Edith and Myrtle.

A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Calvin Skriver officiating. Inurnment has taken place at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

Larry James Nielson April 18, 1950 - July 29, 2017 Larry James Nielson of Camrose, Alberta passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the age of 67 years.

Larry was born in Camrose, Alberta in 1950. He spent his years as a young teen raising his younger brother and sister, twins Kevin and Karen, after his father passed away and his mother had to go back into the workforce.

This set the caring, giving, compassionate nature Larry would carry throughout his life. He stayed in the Camrose area starting out his career as a heavy duty mechanic and eventually ending up at Battle River Implements as Supporting Products Manager.

He spent a few years in Ohaton on an acreage where he enjoyed spending time with his girls, Leandra and Erin, breaking horses, trying his hand at gardening (he grew the best corn!) and even dabbled in farming.

He met his wife Gail in 1988, at the Windsor of all places. His favorite pastime was trying to put a smile on her face by teasing her incessantly; he was the yin to her yang. He unconditionally accepted Gail’s children, Jamie and Kim, as his son and daughter.

They moved into Camrose where they had lots of friends and family. He enjoyed spending time in his garage puttering and entertaining the ever-present guests who would pop in and have a cold one.

In addition to work and family, he loved racing stock cars, playing pool, cooking, camping (first in the Clampett-mobile and then later at their cottage at Elinor Lake), hunting and his all-time favorite, fishing. Larry truly was a teacher of life – from taking all the kids out fishing, making sure they caught one and getting a picture of their prize, to mentoring people at work.

As his main focus was making sure everyone felt welcome and were well looked after, he never let you leave the table hungry, and you were always sure to get some of his famous pickles. He was a lover of animals, especially his Yorkies Izzy and Reese. He was a storyteller and had wisdom that made you wonder if there was anything he didn’t know. He had the BEST fish fries and the coffee was always on at the lake as his deck was a popular gathering place. He had a contagious laugh, a crinkly smile and a love for his granddaughters, Jayden and Delayna, that was unshakable. He had patience and strength that made you want to be a better person.

Larry really was one of a kind – an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. The ripples of his life will live on through all the lives he touched.

My three-year-old son stood up in his chair after supper and flung his bib, spilling a mixture of rice and peas across the freshly-vacuumed dining room floor. I gave him a time out and asked him to please clean up the mess. He said no. I sighed. My six-year-old son asked “Mom, are you feeling angry or frustrated right now?”

It was a good question. We had been talking lately about those two feelings, after “the night that mommy yelled.” The same night that my two boys had a water bottle fight in their bedroom, well after bedtime, soaking two sets of sheets and bedding, while I was with my daughter. It had been the fourth or fifth night in a row (I had lost track) that I had put the kids to bed on my own, while my husband was out working during the height of storm season.

I did some research that night to learn some new tips on managing anger and found an amazing website called www.ahaparenting.com. Controlling anger is a life skill and one that is sorely tested with little ones underfoot. Yet if we can find a way to manage our anger, then we are also role modelling this skill for our children. One mom I know has told me she doesn’t want to have any more children because she isn’t sure who she is when she yells at her kids.

Anger can be such a scary emotion, and isn’t effective at getting a message across to children. A friend of mine says her mom yelled a lot when they were growing up and by the time they were teenagers, they would roll their eyes (out of sight of their mother, I hope) when they heard it and think “oh there’s mom, yelling again.”

The tips I learned went far beyond counting to 10.

The next day, I put the plan into motion. First, I apologized to my children because I had essentially had an adult temper tantrum. If I mess up, I apologize, because I expect them to do the same. Then I explained what steps I would be taking so that I wasn’t a yelling mom.

Tip #1: Stop, Drop (your agenda) and Breathe. Well, I’ll tell you, after the rice and pea incident I was doing so much breathing I was nearly hyperventilating.

Tip #2: Give yourself a time out. The kids thought this sounded hilarious. After we had exhausted the pattern of time out; clean up your mess; him saying no, I went into my room. I quietly closed the door. Laid on my back. Pulled up the covers. And thought about something completely different. Still no yelling.

Tip #3: Smile or laugh. The idea is that you are tricking your body into realizing that this isn’t a fight situation.

I haven’t actually tried this one yet; I think it would be really creepy if you thought someone was about to blow their cool and they suddenly started smiling or laughing.

I would think: that’s it, I’m dead. Kind of like the time I somehow was the cause of my older brother getting toothpaste all over himself one morning; he gave me a look that told me that was it, my life was over, then proceeded to chase me around the yard.

Tip #4: Repeat the words “this is not an emergency”. This is to let your body know that you aren’t in a dangerous situation. I like this one, and now I can be heard saying it out loud when I am in challenging situations. I was repeating it, while we cleaned up the rice and pea mess on the floor together, and my daughter, who was sitting at the table, gave me a huge grin and a big thumbs up. She knew what I was doing.

I explained to my children that to me, anger is a clenched up feeling, whereas frustration is more of a big breath out and sigh kind of feeling. Later in the day after discussing this, my six-year-old asked again what frustration felt like. Then he said that he had done Stop, Drop and Breathe earlier that day while he was feeling frustrated. Success!

Now it’s time to research new tips and techniques for potty training…wish me luck!

Museum turns 50

On Aug. 19, starting at 10 a.m., the Camrose and District Centennial Museum will be celebrating 50 years of preserving the history of Camrose and area with a day filled with entertainment, games and tours of the museum.

“Because it is the 50th birthday, we are trying to focus on the earlier years of the museum, celebrating that commemorating early volunteers and lifetime members,” said Museum coordinator Dariya Veenstra.

Veenstra added that they want to encourage decedents of lifetime members to come to the museum any time, but especially that day and help celebrate their families contributions to Camrose and area.

“We have a museum volunteer who is working on a photo album project of old photos for a special 50th birthday exhibit,” explained Veenstra.

Along with the museum displays and exhibits, guests are invited to tour the facility and listen to interpretive presentations throughout the grounds and view live demonstrations of some of the equipment, tools and machines of days gone by.

“We will be having demonstrations of blacksmithing, spinning wheels and quilting and, of course, the steam engine. We also hope to have the lino typesetter up and running for that day.”

Local acting talent will also be reenacting some of the characters of days gone by.

In an effort to combine education with fun, the museum will be putting on a penny candy game where attendees will have a budget of 10 or 20 pennies that they can spend on candy valued at 1967 prices at a makeshift general store.

“They can also earn more pennies through other games and by attending the interpretive presentations,” said museum volunteer Stephanie Olson. “All the candy was donated by Wild Rose Co-op.”

Entertaining guests will be guitarist/vocalist Hal Strudwick, guitarist/vocalist Alex Mantai, singer/banjo player Devin Rehm and fiddle player Ethan Hardy.

Rebecca’s Bistro & Sweet Treats are donating a cupcake-tiered cake, decorated in keeping with the museum birthday theme and a local food vendor will also be on site. Bring the family and have a picnic lunch on the museum grounds.

The Camrose Axemen men’s baseball team crushed the Sturgeon Paladins 15-3 in North Central Alberta Baseball League action on July 27.

Camrose improved to 4-11 on the season, but will miss the cut-off for the playoffs with the top four teams advancing. The playoff semifinals will be played in Westlock on Aug. 18 and 19. The final series will be in Edmonton on Aug. 26 and 27 on the former Telus Field, now called the Edmonton Professional Field.
