A visit to this 1898-built home, available for educational purpose and viewing pleasure at the Camrose Museum since 1979, is like stepping back in time. The popular and well-appointed museum is a must-see in the summer season, celebrating 50 years of operation. The home was built by Thore Grue and housed his wife and five children for five years. Knut Lyseng struck a deal on the home and surrounding land in 1903; however, the dwelling sat empty until 1910. It was in this year that Carl Lyseng (son of Knut) purchased the homestead for his farming needs. The well-built home featured one room downstairs and one room upstairs for Carl and his wife Ragna. The family made this their home until 1969! The upstairs was divided into bedrooms by curtains. A sunporch was added in 1935 and electricity was finally added in 1950. The move to the grounds of the Camrose Museum, nearly four decades ago, was not the home’s first move. The home was originally built too close to the road allowance and Kurt Lyseng moved it using two bobsleds, each powered by a team of six strong horses. Today, this home stands preserved in time for all to see and admire. It reflects a simple, yet challenging, way of life.

Letters to the Editor Different for my grandson Police officer. Farmer. Rock star. Mechanic. Hairdresser. Teacher. Welder. NHL goalie. Doctor. Those were some of the answers to “What do you plan to be when you grow up?” from among the 88 students who graduated from Reading University at the end of July. I was privileged to attend the graduation. Beaming seven to 10-year-olds stepped up to receive certificates, smiled for a photo flanked by a red-robed University dean and their teacher, with cheering and applause from an enthusiastic full house. *** This was year nine for Reading University – a four-week summer program for students in Grades 2 and 3 whose reading is below grade level. The logic is that, in the first three grades, children learn to read. After that, they read to learn. If they haven’t mastered reading by the end of Grade 3, subsequent grades are likely to be more challenging for them. The goal of Reading University is to enhance children’s reading ability. The number one priority is that the children have fun. Field trips, treasure hunts, games, research in groups, visits with interesting people – whatever it takes to make reading fun, useful and easier. Children from Camrose and County attend Reading University at Augustana Campus of University of Alberta in Camrose. Beaver County and Flagstaff County children attend in Tofield and Killam, and come to Augustana Campus on Fridays so they too have a University Campus experience. The program requires dedicated teachers who choose to do this for a month of their summer break, and the commitment of families to make it possible for their children to participate. A highlight of the graduation was when all the children shouted in unison on cue, “Thank you!” to their families and teachers for making the experience possible. Children proudly led parents and grandparents to “my cafeteria” and “my classroom” and picked up photos and other gifts to take home. Results show that children’s reading improves – and often so does their self-confidence and enjoyment of school. *** There’s another inspiring story – the collaboration and community support for what began as a radical idea. Battle River School Division recruits students (with their parents’ permission) and provides teachers, curriculum, and half the funding. Augustana provides on-campus facilities and cafeteria lunches. Battle River Community Foundation provides half the funds and administers funds. (The program costs about $2,000 per student.) Besides this collaboration, local businesses and organizations and many volunteers provide opportunities for activities and one-on-one attention. *** A surprise guest at the graduation was Dr. Roger Epp, the dean who first committed to Augustana’s participation. A young woman who’d graduated from Reading University in year one attended this year’s graduation to honour a younger relative. She was able to get her picture taken with Dr. Epp, who’d presented her certificate all those years ago. She’s now getting honour grades and planning to be a biologist. A few months ago, Dr. Epp released a slim volume (which I highly recommend!) which includes a prose poem that captures the essence of Reading University. The driver stops the F-350 in the dusty parking lot so that, window down, engine idling rough, he can confess that he never really learned to read, that he works in the mines up north with young men who cannot read, that it will be different – here he hesitates, tears in his eyes – for his grandson. This is his first time on campus. On the dean’s arm is the scarlet robe he wore on the hottest day in July to present fidgety eight-year-olds with the diplomas that certify that reading levels have been raised and cafeteria lunches consumed. He misses the girl in a hurry to show her mom her university and stake her educational ambitions in this place. As if, invited, it is not a stretch for people like her to decide this might be right for them. ~ Roger Epp, Only Leave a Trace: Meditations (Edmonton: University of Alberta Press, 2017), p. 37. Reprinted by permission. I’d love to hear from you. The wrong headed comments by Mr. Kevin Sorenson appearing in his column published in The Booster issue of July 25 must be answered. The Conservative Party keeps harping against the payment to Omar Khadr. What are the facts as opposed to the partial political truths? When the alleged incident occurred Omar was 15 years old. His father and older brother were extreme right wing religious persons; so what chance would a 15-yearold have to stand against his family? The Americans had invaded Afghanistan and met resistance. In the incident one American was killed and another was injured. Soldiers invading a nation and meeting resistance are in danger of losing their lives. Soldiers do get killed in battle. Omar was captured; his brother killed; and taken to Guantanamo Bay (QB) an American base in Cuba. He was not sent to the U.S. because American laws about treatment of prisoners and evidence gathering would apply there; but not in Cuba. After his capture a law was passed by the U.S. to make any action by a person not part of a recognized military force illegal.

At GB Omar was subjected to water torture. That means being submerged in a tank of water until the victim loses consciousness and is nearly drowned. The victim is revived and questioned. If the answers are not satisfactory the process is repeated. Omar confessed to the charge that he had made an explosive device and threw it. There is no evidence other than this confession. Canadian security officers were not involved in the torture but were involved in the questioning and knew what was going on. Then Omar did not have a real trial. Some American officers read the confession and said, “Guilty.” Fifteen years later the President Obama wanted to close GB. Canada was pressured to take Omar. Canada did and he served the remainder of his sentence in Canada; a total of 15 years as a consequence of a confession extracted under torture. It is clear that Khadr’s rights as a Canadian citizen under our Charter of Rights were violated. This has been ruled twice by the Supreme Court of Canada. True the court said nothing about compensation because that question was not before the court. Admitting that the Government of Canada did not protect the rights of a Canadian citizen and paying compensation for that act is the right thing to do. Spending money to continue a wrong policy and argue against doing right when it is clear this is a losing argument is not a wise use of public money. I argue that some of this settlement should go to the widow of the dead American soldier is ridiculous. The judgement of the American court based solely on the conviction of Khadr which was

obtained by torture and no other evidence is unconscionable and the amount of $100 million is simply ridiculous. Do the Conservatives expect to gain votes by the continued attacks on a young man who was betrayed by his country? Ron Williams, Camrose Contradicting evidence

Regarding the article by Kevin Sorenson in The Booster on July 25. An examination of the evidence appears to suggest that Omar Khadr did NOT do the things he confessed to. It is tragic to consider that a Canadian child was abandoned by our government, spent years incarcerated in the foreign US Guantanamo Bay facility, had a representative of our government interrogate him rather than assist him and finally confessed to things he did not do as the only avenue apparent to him to return to his home country of Canada and escape continuing brutal treatment. There is a vast amount of information available about the incident of July, 2002, the evidence of armed forces personnel at the scene at the time, the brutality of interrogation techniques at Guantanamo Bay, the condemnation of the behaviour of the Canadian government by the Supreme Court of Canada. Much research has been done by skilled researchers and knowledgeable commentators. Mr. Sorenson refers to many constituents raising concern about the apology and settlement with Omar Khadr urge them to research the facts. I have written to Mr. Sorenson encouraging him to do so also. Marvin Miniely, Camrose

Ferintosh Little Beaver Lake offers great escape to nature

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The trail around Little Beaver Lake is brimming with fruitbearing trees and shrubs and beautiful wildflowers such as this wild aster.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Friends of Little Beaver Lake Society president William Davies stands at the sign of Little Beaver Lake trail.

By Lori Larsen Just a short 20-minute drive south of Camrose on Highway 21 is the quaint Village of Ferintosh. Amidst the quiet population of approximately 200, is a beautiful little haven known as Little Beaver Lake. The Friends of Little Beaver Lake Society (FOLBLS) is a volunteer group of Ferintosh residents dedicated to the preservation and eventual ecotourism of Little Beaver Lake. Started in 2007, by long time resident Vera Jackson, who is now 91 and still residing in Ferintosh, the society hopes to increase awareness of this incredible hidden gem teeming with wildlife and natural plant life. “Our idea is to focus on ecotourism, young families with interest in health and wellness pursuits,” said FOLBLS president William Davies. “Not necessarily having another Sylvan Lake or Buffalo Lake but focusing on enjoying the natural beauty of Little Beaver Lake. Aptly named the lake was historically a meeting place for aboriginal people who referred to it as Amiskoogis Saskhigan, meaning ‘little lake belonging to the beaver’. The rich history of the area includes European

fur traders of the 1880’s hunting buffalo then in the 1890’s, with the discovery of rich soils perfect for agricultural means, ranches were established in the watershed and farming began. “Our real asset is highlighting the natural ecosystem and the environment,” explained Davies. “Versus something that is more man-made.” The lake is approximately two miles long and a half mile wide and is quite shallow which makes it undesirable for sport fishing or submerging water sports such as swimming, but it is a sanctuary for a variety of bird species, native plants and native wildlife.

Trail signs are spattered throughout the 1.8-km walk around Little Beaver Lake.

“We have dozens of species of fruit bearing berry trees shrubs and wildflowers, great white pelicans, cormorants, bald eagles and a golden eagle flew over the lake the other day.” A kayak or canoe trip around the lake can easily turn into a viewing of a variety of water foul, including a rookery of cormorants that nest on the west side of the lake and other surprise visits by the local inhabitants. In an effort to encourage more visitors to this hidden gem FOLBLS developed the Little Beaver Lake Trail a 1.8 km nature trail loop which includes a maintained, albeit natural, walking trail, bird nesting boxes, interpretive signage and a seasonal boat dock. “We want to produce a trail map for next year to leave at the village office,” added Davies. Funds for the initiative come from Camrose County grant funding, Village of Ferintosh grant funding, Watership Stewardship Grant, and memberships and donations. “FOLBLS believes in a prosperous future for Ferintosh and Little Beaver Lake. Our glass is “half full”. By creating awareness of the ecotourism potential through access to lake environs via Little Beaver Lake Trail, by

highlighting the special environmental niche of our area, by encouraging nonmotorized water access and by securing funding to improve infrastructure for the Village of Ferintosh – the future can be good.” The strategic plan for FOLBLS includes a three year action plan with a vision to monitor lake water quality, maintain and create awareness for the trail, write and submit grants and continue to grow membership. “We are a concerned group of people who want to improve the lake and the community itself,” surmised Davies. “We want Ferintosh to grow and do well. By promoting ecotourism we hope it will promote

Ferintosh and make it economically sustainable. “It is a big idea for little Ferintosh but it is really for all of Central Alberta.” Ferintosh’s Little Beaver Lake is an ideal place for artists, photographers, recreational users, campers and people just coming for the pure enjoyment of surroundings filled with natural life and beauty. The Friends of Little Beaver Lake Society meet monthly, usually last Thursday of the month, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hi-U Centre in Ferintosh. To learn more about Ferintosh visit the website at www.ferintosh.info.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Ferintosh’s Little Beaver Lake is an ideal spot to launch a canoe or kayak and take in the wildlife and peacefulness of the natural surroundings.

Offering strong shoulders of support By Lori Larsen Most every person has, in some way, experienced loss and subsequently grieved loss and in doing so has felt an undeniable void that does not fill immediately if ever, but through the support of trained and caring individuals, such as the 45 Camrose and District Hospice Society (CDHS) volunteers, the hurt can be validated. For Bill Harder, program coordinator for CDHS, and a beacon of light in Camrose, cultivating the mandate of the Hospice Society, comes from a place deep within him. “I see that love pours through us potentially all the time if we are tolerant to it,” he said in describing why this work is important to him. “There is a possibility that this love can come through us to affect the world through what we’re doing. It does that to me whether I am at the bedside of a dying person, with a grief client or in my basement office writing a grant application for Hospice so that they will have funds to pay for all the volunteer programming.” Dealing with people grieving, when they are the most vulnerable, takes a true understanding, the ability to listen intensely, a sincere desire to care and a rare ability to speak the right words, when needed, and Bill, along with all the Hospice volunteers, exemplify all those characteristics. “Hospice moves, breathes and lives because of the volunteers of all ages. And these volunteers have had a death, grieved and many have been at the bedside of someone dying. They have walked the walk and talked the talk.” Bill began a career as a Lutheran pastor after being ordained in 2002. “I worked for the first five years in Armena, a two congregation rural parish, and I really enjoyed the rural setting but after five years I was itching to try something different.” After a stint installing hardwood flooring he worked for the College for two years. “That was a wonderful learning experience and I made great friends but I felt I wasn’t really done with parish work.” With some wise advice from his wife Anna, Bill felt a calling back to the parish and became the pastor at Bawlf where he served the three congregation parish for four and a half years. “At that point I really felt I had explored that vocation with about 15-18 years of various kinds of

church work which was all really meaningful to me. “In December 2014 I resigned and went off the roster with no intention of going back but really no idea of what I was to do going forward.” He completed training in Compassion for Fatigue Education and conducted 15 or so workshops to schools, teachers, family liaison workers, Alberta Health Services, Alberta Mental Health and Hospice. During this time the position for CDHS program coordinator came up and Bill applied. Despite Bill’s own hesitancy about possessing the right qualifications he was successful in acquiring the position. “It was in the realm of my parish and Compassion Fatigue work but there was a learning curve to assess the needs within our catchment area.” In doing so Bill was able to identify the needs of Camrose and district including a vital component of child and youth grief support. “We are not a culture that understands children’s grief or how to respond to it.” To best describe what makes him thrive Bill related a story of supporting a woman through grief. Through a referral this woman contacted him seeking a safe place to tell her story and admit she thought she was going crazy. Bill explained to her, he was not a therapist, there was no fee and he would hear her story and companion her in this difficult time. After a short time with the woman she was able to validate the feelings she was having as being grief and understand that it was a normal and very human process. “Grief is good for us,”

remarked Bill. “To be in that space for a while feels awful but it means that the love we have for the one we lost is percolating around and creating change in us.” Regarding the CDHS, which was formulated in 2011 through the insight and passion of Bev Drever and Treva Olson, Bill shares the continual vision of the Society and the possibility of a future freestanding building. “The vision is to create a place with a homey setting where families can spread out and be comfortable with their loved ones. Where a pet can come in and see them and where there are meeting spaces for education and grief support.” Bill added the vision for CDHS includes expanding grief programming, developing support groups programming and children and youth grief support, developing educational opportunities, expanding the use of the volunteers, maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders and moving supports into the rural communities and Bill will no doubt be a force behind the Hospice’s continual growth. With great work comes a toll and Bill ensures he stays attuned to his own well being by going to that place where he can find his own solace. “I am regimented with exercise, like dark chocolate, enjoy laughter with my wife, touch base with my children, have coffee with a friend and hug my dog.” A wonderful recipe for wellness. WHO can

City lot to be cleaned

I count on?

By Lori Larsen

City council voted in favour of remediation of the city-owned vacant property and adjacent lane situated at the southwest corner of 47 Street and 50 Avenue. Prior to the City purchasing the lot in 1981 it was used for a variety of purposes including a farm machinery shop. The estimated cost of the remediation is $225,000 and would include full excavation and disposal of the contaminated material, both within the cityowned property and in the adjacent lane to the west. With council approval, the cost of the project will be taken from the City’s general operating reserve. City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson indicated the cost would include a project contingency of approximately $50,000 in the event of additional soil needing to be removed. “Once you actually start the work on site, you may find out there is more contamination.” Enarson also noted that costs did not include odour control. “When you do an excavation such as this you do allow the contamination in the soil to become exposed to air at which time some of the vapours can drift downwind. “We do anticipate there will be some smell for as much as three or four weeks during excavation stage.” City manager Malcolm Boyd inquired as to whether or not the vapours would be a health hazard. Enarson indicated that it would not be a health and safety issue, more of a nuisance, especially for people located very close to the site. Councillor David Ofrim inquired as to the approximate timeline of the project. Enarson replied that it would depend on precisely how much contamination has occurred, but estimated it would be one to two months from start to finish. At this point, a start date has not been determined. Ofrim suggested that the closest people (businesses and residents) be notified of the cleanup and that there may be a potential odour concern. Councillor Agnes Hoveland asked about the strength of the odour. “How bad is the odour? Has anyone ever had any experience with this to know what it might be like?” Enarson replied, “The odour can vary from site to site. It is very much related to the concentration (of contamination) and depends on winds and other factors.” Continued on page 14

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.

To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants.

This year’s UDF program began August 10, 2017, starting with Zone A (in Area 2) and will continue for two to three months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regard to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Melissa Henderson at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428.

City of Camrose director of infrastructure services Mark Barrett added, “The odour during excavation is going to be the most intense. But because it is not going to be farmed on the site and allowed to evaporate into the air, I don’t think it will be as bad as we are all imagining. Just when some of the most intense material is coming out, it will generate some of the odours, but the further you are away from the site the less you will notice it.” There was some discussion by Enarson on the options for dealing with the concern of odour and subsequent costs. “We could send out letters to the neighboring business and residents to advise them that they might experience some odour issues or we could invest the money post project to try and deal with those other issues, which may or may not be a nuisance. We won’t know the amount of odour until we start the work. “It is something that can be dealt with once we actually see there is an issue. We will need to inform whichever contractor we use that there might be odour issues and to respond to them as they arise.” Mayor Norm Mayer inquired as to the amount of migration that is happening from the site at this point. Enarson stated, “The migration is happening and will continue to happen. My recommendation is that the city look at cleaning up the site to be free of the possibility of future liability and make the property a little bit more saleable.” Enarson explained the provincial regulations concerning property contamination. “The Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act’s rules, administered by the Alberta Environment, are clear. If a contamination is fully contained on your property, the province doesn’t become too concerned. “As soon it crosses the property by surface, air or by subsurface (ground water), you have a duty to notify the province and potentially develop a plan to deal with it. At minimum, the contamination that has migrated off this property (into the adjacent lane) has to be dealt with under the rules of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. Councillor PJ Stasko concluded, “I think we need it to be done and done right.”

2016 Decoration Day

ADVANCE TICKETS AVAILABLE! (PREMIERES INCLUDED)

Honouring our war vets By Murray Green

Decoration Day is a Canadian holiday that recognizes veterans of Canada’s military. In Camrose, graves of those who served in the military are marked on Aug. 20. The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be marking graves and holding a brief ceremony. Decoration Day is held annually on the third Sunday of August. This is a special day to pay tribute to those in the local cemetery. The community services department staff will be available on this day to answer questions or give assistance finding grave locations. Vehicle traffic is restricted to roadways only. The speed limit is 20 km/h. Flowers and similar decorations must be placed in an approved container. Grave decorations must not include lawn ornaments or any glass or china items. Flowers and potted plants shall not be placed on the turf area of graves between May 1 and Oct. 1 except for a period following Decoration Day or an interment. No pets or animals are permitted in the cemetery. Decoration Day began on June 2, 1890. Originally, the celebration served as a form of protest for veterans of the Battle of Ridgeway who felt that their contributions to the protection of Canada during the Fenian Raids were being overlooked by the government. The veterans placed decorations at the Canadian Volunteers Monument near Queen’s Park in Toronto on the anniversary of the battle. This became an annual event, taking place on the weekend nearest the original date and accumulating more participants as further conflicts resulted in a larger body of Canadian veterans. Participants included veterans of the Fenian Raids, the North-West Rebellion, the Second Boer War and the First World War. The actions of the Fenian veterans resulted in the British creation of service medals recognizing participants in the pre-First World War Canadian conflicts. Commemoration of Decoration Day became less prominent in the early 1900s, although it returned to some prominence when the First World War began. In 1931, the Armistice Remembrance Day Act established Nov. 11 (Remembrance Day) as the official day commemorating military service in Canada. However, recognition of Decoration Day is still held to honour all lost veterans.

Artwalk gala reception to be held

M. J. Kelly By Murray Green

You are invited to share in the celebration of some amazing artists during a gala reception held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Aug. 17 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Many artists will be in attendance, including M. J. Kelly whose work is being featured at the Lougheed Centre alongside works created by the late Robert McLean. M. J. Kelly is happily retired from a multiple career as an art educator and producer of non-profit art events in Canada and has a passion for any and all art. “My heart is full of gratitude for the environments that life has afforded me to live within: the big sky prairies of Alberta, the grandeur of the mighty Peace River, the untouched Kootenays, the gray but sunny coastal city of Vancouver, the endless horizon of Saskatchewan and the great cultural centre of Toronto,” said Kelly. “All of them filled me with new perspectives, colours and emotions. Most recently, I connected with the landscape and energy of

Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico. From the moment I set foot on the tarmac and had my breath taken away by the perfectly landscaped misty mountains, I was definitively grounded. “I finally see my painting as all new – the medium, the size, the subject all of the energy from all the places in which I have loved and lived. I believe that a work of art is an interactive communication between the viewer and the artist, stemming from a creative process that connects the two in a meaningful way. “Years ago, I said to myself, ‘I want to feel what it’s like to be living the full artist experience.’ For me, this has materialized into being almost obsessively consumed with creating, specifically visually and physically. These paintings have been a process and journey of mine that have been in the works for over six years now. Getting ready to show my friends/ loved ones how I see the world and how I experience it back here in Alberta, I realize that I’ve not really developed a market in Camrose, as my painting

windows are shorter and interrupted.” Kelly was a former high school teacher at PACE Outreach. “My focus was student art and English and finding a way for them to untangle their thoughts. These very same students have been my greatest teachers and some have connected deeply with my heart forever. This very purpose, connectedness and thinking created chaos with purist educators and colleagues.” If there’s one language that is truly universal– capable of speaking directly to every human mind and heart on a primal level–it’s art. “Since the beginning of humanity itself, people have been using various forms of art to communicate with others, record events, and express deeply felt emotions that are difficult (or even impossible) to put into words,” she said. Light refreshments will be served and the first 100 attendees will receive a complimentary drink ticket. RSVP to boxoffice@ camroselive.ca or phone 780-608-2922.

Producers open up farms to visitors By Murray Green

Alberta Open Farm Days has been a hit over the last four years for both producers and visitors. Rural residents are encouraged to open their farms because it helps grow their markets by sharing their stories as hosts for Alberta Open Farm Days. The two-day event that gives Albertans an opportunity to experience the farm and understand where their food comes from is a backstage pass to meet the farmer, experience ag-tourism in Alberta and taste local foods direct from the producer. On Aug. 19 and 20, the fifth annual edition of

Alberta Open Farm Days will offer Albertans a fun way to experience rural life. Farm-to-table culinary events on Saturday and free admission to farm tours across the province on Sunday will showcase Alberta agriculture and rural hospitality at its finest. Fill your day with great family fun as you choose from over 100 farms and 16 culinary events to take part in. Banack’s Homestead is open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They hope to be harvesting field peas at this time. If no harvest is possible, they will have a display of all the farm equipment

that is used on the farm. They will also have a display of all the crops produced. You will be hosted by Terry and Humphrey Banack of Round Hill. Go two miles south of Round Hill on Secondary Highway 834. Visit Irvings Farm Fresh on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to view free range Heritage Berkshire pigs, meat shop tours and a barbecue lunch is available. The farm is located oneand-a-quarter miles east of Round Hill on Township Road 484. The farm is first on the south side of road once you leave Round Hill, between RR 185 and RR 184.

Augustana hosts Singing the Circle Kodály symposium

Photos by Lori Larsen and Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Camrose and the University of Alberta Augustana Campus played host to over 250 delegates and presenters during the 2017 Kodály Symposium and Music Festival from Aug. 8 to 13. Photos top to bottom clockwise. The Augustana Faith and Life Chapel echoed the harmonious voices of some 200 people during the 8 a.m. communal singing and canons led by David Vinden of England. Jan-Taylor Bilenki tagged Chantelle Balfour a delegate of the Kodály symposium, during one of the international singing games played amidst the morning of speakers and events. Sarah Ross, executive assistant to the vice-dean of Augustana and creator of Sarah’s Fibre Arts displayed some of the handmade products she was selling at the trade fair set up in the Augustana Forum. Jill Trinka led Kodály delegates from all over the world in singing games during the symposium. Some of the Kodály delegates sat in a circle singing games. The Borealis String Quartet from Vancouver entertained delegates and guests from the community during a free concert held on Aug. 10 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Leela Gilday, aboriginal female entertainer of the year, performed on Aug. 9 as part of the Kodály symposium’s tribute to Canadian artists.

Another Booster advertising success story… Wow! What a day! On Thursday, August 3, Rose City Farmers’ Market at Duggan Mall welcomed a record number of people to their market following the BVJ parade.

“From about noon on it was run, run, run,” said Lori Blades, head of advertising and promotions for Rose City Farmers’ Market. M k t “We “W had h over 50 vendors. While everyone did well, those vendors with the unique and unusual did really well today.” There are many customers who visit Rose City Farmers’ Market every year when the come back for BVJ. They were pleasantly surprised to discover the Reward BUCKS they received with their purchases. “Many out-of-towners received the BUCKS and seemed confused at first. I told the ones I talked to that they could hang onto them if they had already finished their shopping. They don’t expire. But most of them opted to use them on one last purchase,” said Blades. “It was wonderful to see the program work so well – it was good for the customers and for the vendors.” An added bonus for the day was a prize package of products and gift certificates worth approximately $750 – all donated by Rose City Farmers’ Market vendors. In order to enter, the Rose City Farmers’ Market advertisement in The Super Booster had to be Erica Lucas, with her children Samuel and Sophia, accepting her prize package from Lori Blades, Rose City Farmers’ Market. cut out and brought in. “We had a great turnout for the draw,” said Blades. “We were really happy that the winner was a young Mom – Erica Lucas. She was so excited when I called her at 4:00 p.m. with the news! She grabbed her three children and came right down to the Mall to pick up her huge package. I actually wheeled it out for her.” A successful day and a successful contest due to advertising in The Super Booster!

When results matter, it’s a matter for The Booster!

The automotive section of

Pontiac sedans were more than gangster vehicles By Murray Green

The year 1929 was a significant time for Pontiacs. They made several modifications that changed the industry. “I wanted to fix an old car after I retired from my Battle River Towing business,” said Ken Andres of Camrose. “I liked the square type of car, the really old ones. I saw this one advertised in St. Albert and I brought it home all in pieces. There was no wood left, no roof and no doors. My wife Gladys said that I would never fix that pile of junk. Now she is proud of it.” The auto industry of the ’20s, Oakland Motor Car Company of Pontiac, Michigan included, would begin production of new models during the summer in anticipation of the next sales season. That ended and 1929 was the final year that Oakland followed this practice. “I put in all new steel throughout the vehicle, added the top and put in a new floor. Everything is complete steel now. I wanted something safe to drive, so I put in a 350 engine in it, loaded with extras and I drive it everywhere,” added Ken. Production of the new series 6-28 models commenced in July 1928 with vehicles that were nearly identical to the vehicles that preceded them. Among the changes to the new series was one that made spotting them very easy. The heavier 10-spoke wooden wheels replaced the previous 12-spoke units. The Carter carburetor gave way to a larger Marvel one and a quarter-inch single barrel and horsepower was increased as a result. Approximately 80,000 of these were produced as a 1929 Pontiac. “I modernized it so I can travel to car shows in comfort. I put a lot of time and effort into rebuilding this car, so the last thing I want to do is trailer it. I made it to drive and enjoy,” shared Ken. “It means a lot because it was nothing when I got it and I did almost everything myself. You can’t buy parts for this.

CLASSIC PONTIAC

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Ken Andres of Camrose took a pile of parts from a 1929 Pontiac and turned it into an award-winning thing of beauty.

What I couldn’t find, I had to build.” Introduced in January 1929, the New Big Six series 6-29 models arrived just in time for the winter new automobile shows around the country. Pontiac split the grille for the very first time with a thin vertical bar. Another easily seen feature of 6-29

series models was the use of horizontal hood louvers; these proved to be prone to warping due to engine heat and conventional vertical louvers returned to production in May and continued through the end of production in July. Total production of the New Big Six between January and the end of July was 120,000 units.

“I did the upholstery myself. I received a quote out of Edmonton for $20,000 to re-do the interior. I said to heck with that. I bought a sewing

machine, learned to use it over the Internet, and did all of the work step by step. It is all leather inside,” said Ken. Continued on page 21

Axemen end season with close game, prepare for next year By Murray Green

The Camrose Axemen men’s baseball team closed out the North Central Alberta Baseball League play with a 5-3 loss on Aug. 2. The Edmonton Athletics

led 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning before the Axemen chopped the lead in the bottom half by scoring two runs. Camrose collected seven hits with Joe Pasychynk

pounding out three including a double. On the mound, Shawn Noble suffered the loss by tossing six innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits and a walk, while strik-

ing out five batters. Corey Epp came in relief and pitched a clean inning. The Axemen missing the cut for the playoffs. The playoff semifinals will be played in Westlock

on Aug. 18 and 19. The final series will be in Edmonton on Aug. 26 and 27 on the former Telus Field, now called the Edmonton Professional Field.

Pontiac sports modern features on old body Continued from page 19

“In all of the car shows I’ve gone to, I’ve never seen another one like it. People often mistake it for a Ford Model A.” The 6-29A was identical to the previous 6-29 series although two significant models were cut of the line-up: the convertible cabriolet and the four-door landaulet. Over 60,000 were produced until the end of October when the 1929 model year officially ended for Pontiac. Ken has won four firstplace trophies and three seconds this year alone for his work on this classic, orange model. “Old cars have to be bright. I like them to stand out. I often park this beside my bright yellow International truck and light blue car.” Front and rear bumpers were optional; along with either single or dual sidemounted spare tires, spare tire cover, pedestal mirror, wind wings for open cars, heater, spotlight, running lights and Lovejoy shock absorbers rounded out the list of optional equipment. Technical improvements included counterweighted crankshaft with harmonic balancer, larger

intake manifold (a necessity with the larger carburetor) and larger valves with increased lift, which combined to provide a 20 per cent increase in power (no wonder gangsters loved them). “This is the first year for four-wheel brakes and Pontiac made several big improvements,” said Ken. T he four-wheel mechanical brakes featured self-energizing action for the first time. The transmission and rear axle were also improved, another necessity due to the increase in power. This philosophy of continual product improvement and attention to even minor details served Pontiac very well in combination with the vast resources of General Motors. Pontiac was able to offer the motoring public a product that was far superior to its direct competitors in size, performance and longevity. New, the 1929 Pontiac two-door sedan with the big six engine sold for between $745 to $895 plus delivery, depending on features. Ken intends to attend the Round Hill Show and Shine on Sept. 3.

Axle breaks on Marler Aug. 8

Police attended a collision scene at the intersection of Marler Drive and 65th street where a vehicle had crashed into a tree. It was determined that the front axle of the vehicle broke as the male operator was negotiating the corner causing him to lose control. A male reported that his 2011 Dodge Ram was stolen while he was at a party in Camrose. An unlocked red Trek mountain bike was stolen from a residence on 51st Avenue in the 5400 block.

Pontiac Indian head emblem find is a keeper By Murray Green

When Ken Andres of Camrose was restoring his 1929 Pontiac, he found another gem in a different vehicle. “I went to an auction sale and my son (also named Ken) bought a 1941

Chevrolet business coupe. It was just a shell of a car. We kept it for 15 years and then my brother decided to fix a car and bought it from him,” explained Ken. “We brought it out and wanted a closer look at it to see what condition it

was in. I was helping him clean the car up, taking the leaves out. He was in the trunk with a dust pan and broom, digging around trying to clean it. As he was digging, he hit something. He came up with this metal thing in the dust pan. I

looked at it and thought it looked familiar. I cleaned it up and be darned if it wasn’t a Pontiac emblem for my 1929 car. It fit like it was supposed to be there. I still can’t believe, to this day, how that happened.” The emblem was soon

changed to an Indian head with a longer headdress and hair flowing in the wind. “The newer style wouldn’t fit my car because of the way the folding hood opens. It had to be the shorter style,” shared Ken.

ICE CREAM QUEEN

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Eva McPhee served ice cream to customers during Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen on Aug. 10. She received support from the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Stollery Hospital creates miracles By Murray Green

Four-year-old Eva McPhee and her family know firsthand that Dairy Queen’s Miracle Treat Day helps children at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. The two Camrose locations of Dairy Queen Grill and Chill Restaurants are locally owned by Lorraine and Marty McPhee, Eva’s grandparents. “Every year, we donate to the Stollery Children’s Hospital because we think it is a good cause and it helps children,” said Marty. “They have nice staff and facility and it was even more amazing to us when they saved my granddaughter’s life. It’s like karma. You have been donating the money and feel very good about it, but all of a sudden your own grandchild ends up getting a brain tumour and the Stollery then helps us. You get to see how good they really are and I’m totally impressed. It makes me proud to be involved with Dairy Queen.” For about eight years, the business owners have held a Miracle Treat Day and donated all proceeds from Blizzard sales to the Children’s Miracle Network, which in central and northern Alberta is the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. “We had a few warning signs in the beginning that we never thought were linked to a brain tumour. We noticed that she would mix up the odd word that we thought was strange. I talked to my family doctor and she was found to be healthy in every other way,”

explained Eva’s mom Crystal McPhee, who is married to Darren, the eldest son of Lorraine and Marty. “She went through a period were she was sick on and off for a month and a half. She would throw up one day and then be fine again, so it was confusing. I took her to the doctor again and he noticed her right eye was a little lazy,” shared Crystal. “He recommended that I take her to an optometrist. From the day I made the appointment, it started to get worse every day. We found out that her optic nerve was swollen. We went to the Royal Alex (hospital) clinic and from there to the Stollery. Saturday night (March 25) we got to the Stollery and, at about 11 p.m. that night, they broke the news to us that she had a brain tumour,” said Crystal. “They showed us the CT scan with the big tumour. They operated on March 28 and luckily they were able to remove it all. She recovered amazingly well and she was off painkillers 48 hours later. That tumour was causing pressure on her optic nerve.” The McPhee family still had some travelling to do. “We had to wait a week for results. He thought it was ependymoma (childhood ependymoma is a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in the tissues of the brain) and looked very similar to another case he had,” Crystal explained. “She was graded a three– they grade them from one to four with four being the worst. That was scary to hear. The

doctors talked to us about further treatment plan options.” Radiation treatments on young brains is less then ideal. “They recommended going to the United States for proton radiation treatment in Jacksonville, Florida. She had 33 treatments, but we were there for about 70 days because we waited a couple of weeks to get started and get MRIs and other things in order,” Crystal said. Proton radiation is much cleaner because it is used only on the affected area, rather than on the entire brain. “They can control the protons and how far they want it to go. She was lucky because the tumour didn’t touch anything vision related or auditory. She gets tired a little bit easier, but other than that, she is getting back to normal. They told us about all of the side effects, but hers were very minimal.” The McPhees were thankful that she recovered as well as she has. Some are not as lucky. “We hope it doesn’t spread. We are confident in the team at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and she goes back every three to four months for a MRI. Last week, she went for an eye exam and everything was good. They thought she would have some damage, but it looked good.” The Stollery Hospital has helped a lot of children in the Camrose area. “We are incredibly lucky to be living in Alberta and have a facility and staff like we do in the Stollery Children’s Hospital,” she concluded.

Joan Braseth Joan Braseth of Camrose, AB was born on October 5, 1939. She passed away on August 2, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose at the age of 77 years. She is survived by her husband Russel; children Carol ( John), Jim (Beth) and Shona (Blaine); 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous family and friends. Marvin George Foss November 19, 1950 ~ August 3, 2017 Marvin George Foss of Round Hill, Alberta passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Marvin was born on November 19, 1950 in Camrose, Alberta. He was raised in Surrey, BC and was the fifth of nine children born to George and Grace Foss. Marvin married the love of his life, Noreen Lamont, on July 28, 1973 and they had four children. In 1976, Marvin, Noreen and family moved to Round Hill where they raised their family. In 1976, Marvin started working for AGT/Telus until his retirement in 2002. Marvin couldn’t stay retired long and he contracted out to Bell to do fiber optics. Never one to sit idle, Marvin and Noreen decided it was time they opened their own business and on June 27, 2006, Noreen’s Place opened in Round Hill. Noreen’s Place was where everyone would come to catch up, have a coffee and see faces you may not otherwise see. Everyone was always welcome. So many memories were made over the next ten years. In 2015, even after being diagnosed with cancer, Marvin shocked the family by deciding to get a night job at Walmart. It started as a part-time job, but it very quickly turned to full time. He worked there until he was unable to work any longer. Marvin enjoyed many things in his life, but one of his greatest joys was coaching the Round Hill Raiders men’s fastball team. So many great memories were made with that team and Marvin talked about it right until the end. His great loves were his wife, kids and grandkids. He loved them fiercely and nothing was more important to him. In 1988, Marvin and Noreen lost their only son, Derek, after a long battle with cancer. Marvin is survived by his loving wife Noreen Foss; children Tanya (Greg) Tkaczyk, Tracy (K.C.) Komosky, and Mindy (Nathan) Felgate; his most loved grandchildren Jake, Kacie, Luke, Timothy, Andrew, Owen, Joshua, Eli and Isaac; sisters Georgina (Joe) Orcheski and Eileen Staal; and brothers Arnold (Ria), Dennis, Ken and Harvey (Doreen). He was predeceased by his son Derek; parents George and Grace Foss; father and mother-in-law Ronald and Julia Lamont; sisters Kathy Campbell and Joyce Sutherland; sisters-in-law Cindy Foss and Barbara Foss; and brothers-in-law Dale Lamont, Mike Staal and Doug Sutherland. Marvin will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. A Public Graveside Service was held on Friday August 11, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. from St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Cemetery (Highway 834, West on Township Road 482 one mile, south side of road) near Round Hill, Alberta with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Fellowship and refreshments followed at Noreen’s Place (Diner) in Round Hill. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital or to the Canadian Cancer Society. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

NOTICE OF APPLICATION

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Giving truly does come full circle as MR MIKES Camrose owner Ryan Konowalyk presents a cheque for $500 to Cody McCarroll, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Camrose, while Marc Caba, MR MIKES Camrose kitchen manager and past recipient of a home from Habitat, looks on.

Giving back By Lori Larsen

Being on the receiving end of a home from Habitat for Humanity is something Marc Caba knows all about, so being part of the donation made by his employer MR MIKES Camrose demonstrated the reciprocal power of giving. Being unable to acquire Keith Urban to donate to Habitat for Humanity Camrose during the Big Valley Jamboree didn’t stop Ryan Konowalyk, owner of MR MIKES Camrose, from donating $500 to the cause. “My decision to donate was based on hearing my kitchen manager Marc Caba’s amazing story of immigrating to Canada and being able to make a great life for him and his family,” said Konowalyk. “Habitat for Humanity was a very big part of his success story.” Sheryl and Marc Caba and son Matthieu received their home in June 2016. BRCF assists with Naslund scholarship Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a scholarship grant to Battle River School Division. The grant is from income from the Ty Naslund Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was established by Carol and Jeff Naslund to honour the memory of their son, Ty, who passed away, while a student at Bawlf School. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual

donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in
