returns to the Camrose area this weekend! It’s a great way to explore scenic Camrose County on a self-guided driving excursion. One of the stops you won’t want to miss is

Alberta’s Littlest Airport,

which is located close to Bawlf. The Blackwell family, well known for recreational flying, some thirty-eight years ago expanded their airfield (originally solely used for full-sized private aircraft) into a hotspot for flying radio controlled airplanes and helicopters of all shapes and sizes. On weekends, R.C. pilots, from far and wide, converge on Alberta’s Littlest Airport where they test and perfect their skills, “talk shop” and mingle with visitors and spectators. An annual Fun-Fly, hosted each July, attracts dozens of pilots each year, each interested in aviation on a smaller scale. One such pilot, Doug Currie, from Beaumont, has never missed this weekend activity in any of the nearly four decades that the Fun-Fly has been operational. This weekend, weather permitting, pilots from three western provinces are likely to be displaying their impressive skills for all to enjoy. The action will take place from 9 am until dark Saturday and Sunday during Prairie Fun Days.

in hot weather

By Alberta Health Services

Hotter temperatures have a lot of Albertans spending time enjoying the great outdoors. As temperatures soar, it is important to keep a few things in mind as you head out. Though most people can handle moderate summer weather without issue, even healthy Albertans need to keep heat safety in mind during warmer months. When temperatures are high, make sure to take frequent breaks from the heat, spending some time indoors at home, or in a cooled public building – like a mall or indoor pool. Ensure that sunscreen is applied 20 minutes before heading outdoors (be sure the product blocks both UVA and UVB rays), and reapply frequently. Rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day is also a smart way to beat the heat. When spending time outdoors, what you wear makes a big difference in keeping your body cool. If you know you will be out in the heat, light colored clothing is suggested. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/ UVB CSA-certified seal) along with long sleeves and pants can help protect you from the sun’s rays. A water bottle is a much needed accessory with any outfit – make sure to drink plenty of water and other nonalcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated. Albertans are also urged to keep an eye out for heat warnings issued by Environment Canada. posted at http://weather. gc.ca/warnings/index_ e. html?prov=ab to keep residents informed and prepared during periods of extreme heat.

A Heartbreaker By Arnold Malone

For 25 years Canada Day has held a special and bountiful meaning for myself and I am humbled by my good fortune of being Canadian. Twenty five years ago this past July 1, I received a heart transplant at Edmonton’s U of A Hospital. Post transplant I learned from one doctor, “That I would not have made September” and from another, “That I had no more than six weeks remaining without a transplant.” Since then I have enjoyed 25 years of good health, bountiful opportunities and many rich experiences. At the time of transplant our son was seven years old, he is now 32. Sadly many Canadians die waiting for an organ either because they do not match an available organ or there is a shortage of supply. When a community loses a person that is much too young, attractive, skilled, that is liked and widely loved there is always a huge hole in the lives of those who knew the deceased. But when it is for the want of an organ there is an additional haunting burden. “What if?” What might the situation have been had an organ been available when needed. What if life didn’t end now? That is the unending question and it is a question for every citizen to reflect upon. Too often potential donors reflect on their heart when considering being an organ donor and that becomes a cultural stumbling block. The heart is the first organ of which we are aware. Our heart is a noisy organ. From infants we have felt and heard our hearts. The heart races with fear, booms in exhaustion, dances with love, and lulls while we are at rest. The heart is the rhythm section of our emotions. The poets and song writers think our heart is a weather station. They declare that, “It is raining in my heart”, “The Winds of My Heart Blow For You”, someone is, “A Cold Hearted Woman”, “My Heart Is On Fire” and you share, “The Seasons Of My Heart.” So, “Stop draggin’ My Heart Around.” Song writers think our hearts are constructed of many materials: “Some men have; A Heart Of Stone, others A Heart Of Oak, some have a Heart Of Steel, and still others Have A Wooden Heart. If you are kind person you may have, A Heart Of Gold. We sometimes treat the heart like property. “I give my heart to you”, “You Have A Place In My Heart”, and “My Heart Belongs To Daddy.” Also, a heart can be athlete, “Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart.” If The song writers were correct we have hearts that cheat, sing, cry, laugh, break, dance, burn, listen, are cold or hot, hard as nails or as soft as a rose, some have heavy hearts and others are light hearted. Darn those “Achy Breaky Hearts.” When we are asked to draw a heart we draw a valentine. We may put lace on it or add cupids. Candy, sunglasses, beds, and pillows pretend to be hearts with their valentine shape. We don’t sing, “I left my kidney in San Francisco.” One organ does not trump another. There is little advantage in having a good heart if the other organs are in trouble. The world has many pumps. There are water pumps, oil pumps, sump pumps, air pumps, vacuum pumps, and all of us, along with millions of other critters all have pumps called hearts. The heart, however, is an pump with an image problem. More than 80 per cent of Canadians state that they are willing to be an organ donor but less than 20 per cent actually express their wishes to family and register to become an organ donor. We don’t romance livers and kidneys and there is no reason to romance our pumps. Every organ has a function–a duty–in sustaining life. So we need to see past our distorted attitude about hearts. A single donor can save or improve life for 13 others. The last gift you can give will be the best gift you have ever given. If it is your choice to become a donor, Google: Organ and Tissue Donations in Alberta. Don’t miss the opportunity to make a very precious gift possible.

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Well informed

I would like to commend both Harry Gaede and M.R. Leithead on their recent letters to the Booster concerning the Omar Khadr case. Thank heavens we have well informed citizens in Camrose who are able to recognize and point out the difference between facts and political propaganda. I have met Mr. Sorenson on several occasions, and he seems to me to be a reasonably intelligent man. But once MP’s are elected and start breathing the Ottawa air, something seems to happen to their rational and critical faculties. Their own independent thinking is replaced by boilerplate messages provided by their party headquarters. As much as I dislike the phrase “alternate reality” popularized by the U.S. administration, it does seem an apt way to characterize the Conservative version of the Khadr odyssey. Why can we not carry on in Canada a civilized rational discussion about the rights of Canadians abroad without turning it into a political cat fight whose main goal is to

denigrate the other party and its members. The underlying assumption to all this is that the opposition is by definition dishonest, devious and interested only in furthering their own agenda. Come on, Canada. I know we are better than that. Why is it that our politicians cannot rise above their petty needs to prove they’re right and hence disparage the personal integrity of those who hold different views? I sadly reflect on the glorious summer of 1967 when the whole country celebrated the incredible gift of being Canadian. What has happened in the last 50 years? Peter G. LeBlanc, Camrose Helping hands

Last Saturday, Aug. 12, I found myself in a disconcerting and unexpected predicament. I have MS and have used a power wheelchair for the past 12 years. That afternoon, for the first time ever, I ran out of battery power and was suddenly stranded a block from my home. My caregiver, Josie Ann, was with me and luckily remembered how to switch my chair from power to manual mode – which meant that the chair could be physically pushed. My power wheelchair is really heavy and more than twice the weight of Josie Ann, so pushing it was really difficult. We were getting anxious because it was a really hot day and where my wheelchair died was on an open sidewalk, nowhere near a tree or some shade. We were just debating calling 911 when we noticed a fellow and his lovely wife

and baby walking toward us. When I asked the man if he could help us, he didn’t think twice about saying yes. At this point, all I really wanted was to get into some shade while we waited for family/friends to give us a hand. But this strong fellow managed to push me and my chair all the way up the hill! As we were going up the hill, I could hear the man’s little one crying, so when we got to my building, I thanked him and told him we could take it from here. Josie Ann and I were a little stunned as we watched our hero head back down the hill. But then we realized we had another hurdle in front of us. We were at my condo building, but to go up the wheelchair ramp to the front door was also all uphill! We were struggling at the foot of the incline, realizing we were going to need help, when a man driving by (hero #2) stopped to give us a hand. He had me pushed up the ramp and in the front door of the building in no time. He left before I could even turn my chair around to say thank you. Once we were home, Josie Ann and I looked at each other, amazed at what had just happened. We felt overwhelmingly grateful that these two caring and generous gentlemen had stopped to help us. In a time when the world is full of unrest and distrust, I’m so thankful I live in a community where the kindness of strangers can still be found. To our heroes, Josie Ann and I will be forever grateful. Deborah Morgan, Camrose

Pool plans coming along swimmingly By Lori Larsen The City of Camrose Aquatic Centre renovation and expansion plans are moving along and according to community services general manager Ryan Poole the design concept phase should be complete by the end of this year or early part of the new year. “Right now we (city) are still working on the concept designs, the ideas of what can fit where,” said Poole. An architect has been hired to draft the basic concepts and determine the exact sizes and locations of features of the new facility. “The architect is able to come back to us with some very rough estimates of cost based on all that information then we can make a decision, hopefully in the next few weeks, to say this is the basic concept we want you to go with.” After that, the architect will work with a series of engineers on refining the details of the design including actual dimensions and types of materials. “At that point our goal is to go to tender to a general contractor construction company in early 2018,” added Poole. “They will give us quotes on detailed prices, including all the subtrades and if it fits within our budget we can go back to council to confirm this is the design and firm they wish to go with.” If for some reason the design doesn’t fit within the $10.5 million budget council will have to determine if there needs to be cuts to the design or if more funding is necessary. “Once the tender is awarded our goal is to have that company start actual construction in the spring of 2018, barring any hiccups,” smiled Poole. One of the main features and major expenses of the new Aquatic Centre project is the addition of a competition pool. “We are really aiming

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose community services general manager Ryan Poole relates the proposed plans for the Aquatic Centre renovations and expansion.

to put in a 25 metre competition pool, preferably eight lanes,” explained Poole. While some people may wonder about such an expense for competition swimming, Poole related several other uses for a competition lane pool. “Camrose has a high volume of lane and fitness swimmers, the Camrose Cygnets Synchronized Swim Club, Camrose Sea Serpents Swim Club, Camrose Junior Vikings Triathlon Club, Special Olympics, lifeguard courses and higher level lessons including swim kids two up to ten.” All would be potential users of the competition pool. “Having a competition pool would also free up the existing swimming pool to be redeveloped into a prop-

er play pool and an area for lessons for the younger children. Having the new competition pool would separate the groups of users which would allow for two separate water temperatures. A cooler temperature pool for competitive swimmers and a warmer temperature pool for children play, aquasize, water therapy classes and physiotherapy. An online public survey conducted by the City of Camrose regarding options for the pool renovation and added comments resulted in 1,900 respondents and a number of recommendations, the most prevalent of which was revamping the existing change rooms, Continued on page 9

Letters to the Editor A Mission Gets out of Hand

I’m normally not a person who is violent. On the other hand… Someone visiting had been watching out the window as I yanked up weeds. When I returned to the house, he said, “Wow, I wouldn’t want to get in your way when you’re mad.” I was startled. Moi? Mildmannered even-tempered me? (That snorting sound you hear in the background is my adult children laughing.) On another occasion, on a hot summer day when dozens of flies had got into the house, a visitor watched me in operation with a fly swatter. “I’ve never seen you look so lethal, “she said. “You look like you’re on the warpath. I’m getting out of the way!” I admit that I was definitely in “kill” mode. In that context, a small news item made perfect sense to me. *** The opening sentence said, “Officials in Thunder Bay said a local resident lit his house on fire in an ill-advised effort to get rid of a wasp’s nest.” “Ill-advised?” According to the item, the wasp nest was on the ground near the resident’s home. He decided to pour gasoline on it and set it on fire. The fire quickly spread and the house’s siding caught on fire. I could see it happening. I started to laugh. (Of course, it wasn’t my house.) In order to put out the blaze, fire crews had to strip the siding off the house. No one was injured. No report of what happened to the wasps, but presumably they were no longer a threat. Definitely one of those, “It seemed to make sense at the time” events. *** The item reminded me of a childhood incident. Our dad was trying to swat a fly in the kitchen of our home. His aim wasn’t precise and he kept missing. He too went into “kill mode,” getting madder and fiercer by the second. The fly landed on the ceiling light fixture. Dad swatted, and the light fixture smashed. The fly flew into the living room. So there was Dad, standing in the middle of broken glass. *** My brother chose that moment to say, “Um, Dad?” “Yeah.” “Um, you know the basement window by the front?” “Yeah.” “Um, well, I kind of parked my bike near there.” (We’d been told many times not to park our bikes by the basement windows.) My brother paused. “And the bike kind of fell and, um, the basement window broke.” And there was Dad, standing in the middle of broken glass. What could he say? I thought my brother’s timing was brilliant. (It’s no wonder he grew up to be a brilliant salesman, primarily because of his ability to think what would be important to the person he’s speaking with, and focus on that.) *** We’ve all had the experience. Something starts small, doesn’t work right away, we’re frustrated, we get into that “on a mission” relentless mode, and our more rational brain cells are over-ridden by primeval mindlessness. It’s human. Fortunately, most of us have people around us who can help us get back into clear thinking – or at least can divert us away from monumental stupidity. And most of us don’t have the power to do huge damage. Lucky for us. And lucky for the people around us. *** I’d love to hear from you. Have you ever “been on a mission” and found you were doing or saying things that you would not ordinarily? Send me an email at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I won’t blab (my email is private) and I’ll happily reply within one business day. ***

Coming back into the city, I have noticed the city management has finally mowed the grass along Camrose Drive as requested by council. As I indicated to council in my presentation, I would be requesting those who wish to take the time to view the compromised settlement the council had proposed; I would have the residents and taxpayers of Camrose view and comment on what they think about the proposal and write to the mayor and council @ 5204-50 Avenue, Camrose, AB T4V 0S8 or alternatively

you could call them on the phone at 780-672-4426. Myself personally, I’m not satisfied with what I see and would like to see all areas that are not in it’s original natural state return to being mowed and manicured. I still believe that the residents close to the naturalization areas, especially during the spring and fall seasons are still facing an extreme fire hazard. As well an article by Carson Hvenegaard (student and this years Wildlife and Greenspace stewardship coordinator for the City of Camrose) indicated how to combat the infestation of voles. Quoting from his article, “Since voles prefer to remain under the cover of long grass, weeds and other objects, one of the simplest ways of keeping your yard vole free is cleaning debris from your lawn and mowing your grass, especially around the plants you want to protect. I’m not sure if you have noticed we have some dead trees in certain areas in town that I believe are going to be replaced eventually. I have noticed that the City goes about watering the trees with watering trucks and sprays the water on the ground hoping the water will saturate into the ground before it flows

away. I think they should be using a watering spike and deep water these trees, it would take the same amount of time and the tree would get the water it needs to survive. This may be the perfect time for the residents to evaluate what council has done for you in their last term or terms. You will have the opportunity to voice your opinion by voting for a mayor and council members in this October’s municipal election (Oct. 16). For those who are not satisfied, I was able to obtain the paperwork from the City of Camrose office in which a person could review and decide if she or he would like to run in opposition to the current council members or mayor. The nomination date is set for Sept. 18. This gives a person little to no time to campaign for the position they would wish to challenge. Keep in mind, this is your city. You have hired these council members and mayor to act on your behalf. If you feel they have failed to act on your behalf, you have the right to make this change by running against them or just simply vote them out. Rodger Banack, Camrose

Armena Community market set to go By Lori Larsen Armena is once again hosting the Community Market on Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Armena Anniversary Park. In it’s seventh year the market is a place for everyone to come and enjoy with fun family activities and of course a variety of local vendors selling homemade and homegrown goods. This may be a perfect opportunity to purchase some early, unique Christmas gifts. “Last year was a huge success lots of folks on hand to celebrate the day,” said Olav Traa one of the event organizers. “It’s a celebration of community.” This will be the second year using the newly finished Skating Shack facility with a full kitchen and lavatories. “Another highlight this year will be the return of Will Voth and a selection of his engines from a by-gone era.” A hot lunch of beef on a bun will be served as well as some homemade fruit pies and ice cream. “We always have lots for the kids to do as well including many activities and our very popular play-

ground where parents can find peaceful benches.” The market started in 2011 by Pastor Jim Appleby as part of a rural ministry initiative and is a tribute to everyone in the community of all generations were everyone is welcome from near and far. “Having recently celebrated our 100’ish anni-

versary, Armena remains a dynamic and diverse little Hamlet proud of its rich heritage and ready to embrace the future with open arms.” Come out and visit the Hamlet of Armena, approximately 21 kilometres northwest of Camrose along Highway 21, and enjoy a fun filled family event.

Continued from page 7

“If we can possibly fit it in we would like to try to revamp the change rooms. Have a larger family change room so that people have options and spruce up the existing change rooms,”said Poole. Other features respondents requested were a better water slide and a lazy river, a shallow (three feet) pool, often oval or kidney shaped, with the jets facing one direction allowing users to be gently moved around the area. “We would like to improve the front lobby area as well,” said Poole indicating there has been feedback from both the public and pool staff suggesting the area is too small and congested. “Other parts of the renovation, that may not be visible to the public, are improving the mechanics of the pool so that the water gets filtered better and creates a cleaner pool with less down time. Also improving the air handling system so there is better air quality in the building which makes a difference to the public experience. “After tendering out to construction, hopefully in the spring of 2018, we estimate it would take over a year and half of overall construction. The first half of that year and a half will entail constructing the new building. Then there will be a time when we will have to move into the existing building, tie the two buildings together and do all the renovations and changes to the existing swimming pool, building and change rooms. “In that whole process we really hope to minimize how long the pool will have to be closed. But there will be a period of time throughout that year and a half of construction, we are not sure exactly when, where the entire facility will have to be closed. “It is too difficult and costly to do construction and tie things together when you have patrons coming and going but we are hoping to limit closure by having one pool closed while the other is open and vise versa if possible. Once again that will depend on the contractor and if there are extra costs involved.” The goal for final completion of the Aquatic Centre renovation and expansion is mid summer to early fall 2019.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Alberta Minister of Children’s Services Danielle Larivee, greeted parents and children of the Kids Campus day care on Aug. 2. Minister Larivee, left, sits with Ashley Radchenko and 18-month-old Paxton discussing the benefits of the recent funding initiative. By Lori Larsen

Alberta Minister of Children’s Services Danielle Larivee, made a visit to the Kids Campus day care centre as one of the 22 New Early Learning and Child Care Centres to receive funding for the pilot program, Aug. 2. The mandate of the program, implemented on May 1, is to demonstrate

the importance and viability of offering affordable $25-a-day child care in Alberta. According to Larivee’s office, the feedback on the program thus far indicates a strong desire to include more centres throughout Alberta and the ministry is investigating the possibility of expansion. At this point, the New

Early Learning and Child Care Centres offer 1,296 licensed and affordable child care spaces throughout Alberta that include hiring 119 new child care staff and an estimated 357 Albertans will be able to enter the workforce due to the availability of additional child care spaces.

Fraudulent passport website By Lori Larsen Renewing your passport? Beware. The passport website PassportOnline.ca is a fraud and has scammed some Canadians out of, not only providing their personal information, but the $186 fee. Unfortunately, when you Google search the phrase “renew Canadian passport online” the fraudulent application website service will appear as one of the options and promises fast and easy passport renewal. “The application looks very legitimate in that it is blue and white with a maple leaf in the corner similar to a government of Canada application form,” said Camrose Police Service Constable Kelly Bauer. “On the first page of the website there is a “see if you are eligible” button which simply asks your name, phone number and email address. Once you click the button the information you just provided is pre-filled onto an application form and that is the

application to become victimized.” Passport Canada is warning Canadians to protect themselves from any organization claiming to offer support in applying for a passport and the federal government indicated that Passport Canada is not affiliated with PassportOnline.ca or any other third party service provider. According to Passport Canada: No third-party person or organization has the ability to speed up the processing of your passport application. Only Passport Canada service locations

are authorized to collect passport processing fees. Passport Canada will never ask you to disclose the security code on the back of your credit card when paying the passport fee. The official website for applying for a passport is www.cic.gc.ca/english/ passport/apply/renew/. Your printed application from the official Government of Canada website along with supporting documents should be mailed, preferably by a certified carrier or traceable mail service. Ensure that the site you are using has cic.gc.ca in the website address. If in doubt contact or go to the nearest Service Canada office. Waiting in line may be inconvenient but it is far better than being the victim of fraud. For more information about applying for a Canadian passport, please visit Passport Canada at www. passport.gc.ca.

Working to get Albertans working By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

I was looking forward to coffee and treats (on me) with Battle RiverCrowfoot constituents during my Satellite Constituency Office Days. I gathered federal political input, observations, constructive criticisms and suggestions and help me prepare for the Conservative Party of Canada National Caucus in September in Winnipeg and the fall session of Parliament. Good news this week includes construction beginning on the multi-billion-dollar Line 3 pipeline replacement between Hardisty and Wisconsin with 1,600 workers will be involved in the initial phase. Locally, we’re building about 405 km of the total and these jobs will last until the spring or summer of 2018. This kind of work provides much needed economic stimulus for small communities all along the pipeline route. For example, Hardisty’s chief administrative officer Sandy Otto is quoted in the media saying the town will have about 300 temporary residents connected to the project and up to 800 workers. Albertans understand the importance of this local energy-pipeline news out of Hardisty. Former finance minister Joe Oliver wrote about the abandonment of the $36-billion Petronas LNG project and how this is further “sad” news concerning the Trudeau government’s failure to export Canada’s energy abroad. The tragedy unfolds as lack of employment opportunities, economic growth, funding for social services, and revenues for First Nations. Oliver warns about the troubles and potential losses involved with the $6.8–billion Kinder Morgan pipeline and the $12-billion Energy East pipeline. The University of Calgary’s Jack Mintz wrote the very next day about the U.S., Australia, Norway and others building lucrative LNG capacities focused on export markets. World demand for oil and gas will continue for decades. Professor Mintz lists the companies, “…bailing out of Canada, where tax and regulatory policies are increasingly hostile to business.” The loss of investment in Canada, indeed, the chasing away of investment by the Alberta NDP government and the federal Liberal government, is already hurting Canadian workers and their families. These governments preside over taxes, fees and costs (including home energy and food prices) that continue to rise while opportunities decline for Canada’s labour force linked to Canada’s energy sector–links too numerous to list and country-wide. Canadian Conservatives have always said that we can meet our global commitments and not hurt our workers, their families and our economy. I believe that more and more Canadians will be seriously looking at the political alternative to the political ideologies that are currently squandering Canada’s competitiveness, curtailing our growth, and failing to work for future prosperity. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get the exercise you need to stay healthy. Experts recommend at least two-anda-half hours of moderate activity (such as brisk walking, cycling or yard work) a week. Get friends and family to join you and find new ways to put steps in your day. Joining a walking group and setting goals to walk will help build walking into a regular part of a healthy routine. Some people like to track their steps through a phone app or a pedometer. Using one of these step counters can help to set short-and long-term goals for how much you walk in a day. Other people like to set alarms on their phone to remind them to walk. No matter how you choose to remind yourself to get up and walk, doing a bit each day improves overall health, mood and creates good habits. Here are some tips to be safe while outside walking: Know your surroundings. Walk in a well-lit, safe place. Carry a cell phone for emergencies. Wear comfortable shoes and socks that cushion and support your feet. Pay attention to your walking surface. Use sidewalks and paths. If you usually walk outside and the weather is bad, take comfortable shoes to the mall and walk several laps inside. Drink plenty of water before, during and after you are active. Take a water bottle with you when you walk. This is important when it’s hot out and when you do intense exercise. For more information, visit myhealth.alberta.ca.

Family Experiences nature up close By Laurel Nadon

The Arends family loads up onto a stroller and bikes, heading down the paved trail around Mirror Lake until they reach the north end near the bridge where they had the fascinating job this summer of being purple martin condo landlords. The once a week responsibility soon turned into a trip every two days once the birds had hatched just to look for changes in the birds. “The kids were really fascinated at how quickly the birds changed and so were we,” said Katie Arends, who along with her husband Greg and young children Oliver, Heidi, Theodore and Vera, cared for the birds this summer. “Every time we went down, there was a drastic change. Initially, the kids didn’t quite understand what we were doing. Once we saw the eggs, they were really excited. Once the eggs hatched, then they thought it was really cool and they wanted to go and check all the time.” She said that the birds’ size, eyes and feathers were interesting to watch change. The most interesting parts of the experience for her were to see the birds for the first time once they had hatched, and then to see how quickly they grew feathers. The family began their landlord duties in early

June after receiving a flyer in their mailbox from the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society seeking a landlord who lived close to the bird house. “They said to check every five to seven days, opening all the compartments,” Arends said. “They showed us what a purple martin’s nest looks like, a sparrow’s nest and instructed us that we have

to get rid of the sparrow nests because they will scare off the purple martin.” They were instructed to remove blowfly larvae from the chicks, which the parents don’t always remove, and to rebuild the nests at days 10 and 18. They also kept a journal to track development of the birds. Continued on page 25

Break and enter reported Aug. 19

A reporter advised of a Break and Enter, possibly in progress. Two people were observed breaking into his house. Camrose Police Service attended the address and located a male and female at the rear of the residence. Police observed the southwest window of the residence was broken into and two footprints matching the males footwear were present inside the residence. Both were placed under arrest for Break and Enter and transported to cells. Police located quantities of methamphetamine and heroin inside the female’s purse. Both will be placed before a Justice of the Peace. Aug. 18

While police were patrolling a neighborhood a motor vehicle was observed travelling with a stolen license plate. Checks showed the vehicle was stolen from another jurisdiction. The vehicle was stopped and the three occupants were arrested. Further investigation determined that two of the occupants were currently bound by court orders which they were breaching. A 29-year-old male, 19-year-old male, and 32-year-old female were charged with possession of stolen property. The 29-year-old male and female were also charged with breaching their court imposed conditions.

Alberta families recognized for 100 years of farm business By Lori Larsen To honour the dedication it takes to farm the same land for 100 years the Alberta government handed out Century Farm and Ranch Awards to 25 of 52 Alberta farming families at a formal event held on July 27 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. “The ongoing success of our agriculture sector depends greatly on the dedication and hard work of Alberta’s farming families,” said Minster of Agriculture and Forestry Oneil Carlier. “It is an honour to recognize their legacy and support the sustainable growth of our local food industry, which is an integral part of the foundation of our provincial economy.” Over 1,700 families have been recognized with Century Farm and Ranch awards since 1993. “Our ancestors, Peter and Anna Zimmer, came from Minnesota in 1902,” said award recipient Kevin Zimmer of Daysland. “This award is a real honour and recognized our entire family’s perseverance. It’s growing more and more rare to see land passed down through farming families for generations.” Agriculture is the province’s largest renewable industry, with exports values at more than $10 billion annually. More than 43,000 farms in Alberta total over 50 million acres of land and contribute to Alberta’s economic growth and success.

Rybalka signs four year deal

Duggan Cinemas is on and

By Murray Green

There is no question about it. Boris Rybalka will be the head coach of the Camrose Kodiaks junior hockey team for at least the next four years. He already has more than 1,000 games coached as a head coach and general manager in the AJHL and his experience is very valuable. “Our goal has always been to develop the player/ athlete on and off the ice and to make them successful in life. Now, I want to also really develop and mentor the coaches who we have coming aboard so that they know and understand what it is to be a Kodiak and part of this great City of Camrose,” said Rybalka. “Recently, the mayor of Camrose made a comment about why he is running for another term and it is very similar to our plan. We want to see the Kodiaks survive for years to come and we need to put a few things in place to make sure this happens.” Rybalka wants to see his mentorship game improve this season. Blair Becker has agreed to stay on with the Kodiaks coaching staff. “What I value in Blair is his honesty, integrity, and passion. He is a very knowledgeable man who is loyal, trustworthy and committed to our organization. He went to school here in Camrose at Augustana and he loves this community. What most people do not know is that he drives from Edmonton to Camrose to be here for practices and games. He runs a very successful hockey program called ‘Core Hockey’ where he teaches skill development to players on and off the ice,” continued Rybalka. “He is great at what he does and many of the players he teaches move on to the next level. He is in high demand in Edmonton as he provides individual sessions and he works in academies in Edmonton. I am glad that Camrose will be able to see Blair this August in Camrose as ‘Core Hockey’ will be here from Aug. 21 to 25. He is one of the best for teaching skill development as he has the passion and knowledge to be able to communicate to the athlete.” He is honoured to be able to coach again this year with Blair. “I would like to thank Boris and Doug for mentoring me along the way. I would like to thank the organization for the trust they have put in me. I am proud to be a Kodiak,” added Becker. Matt Hunter will be changing roles to join the team

as an assistant coach. “Matt has been doing great work since arriving in Camrose three years ago. He has been working hard with our business community in Camrose and surrounding area. He has been in the office and selling season tickets and doing game-day activities. Matt has also been training athletes on the skating treadmill and synthetic ice at the Kodiaks training centre. Now with a little restructuring, Matt will start to learn the game of hockey on the ice as an assistant coach,” said Rybalka. Hunter has a passion for the game and played at the NCAA level. “I am excited to see how he develops and learns the game of coaching over the next few years,” shared Rybalka. “I am excited to start this new chapter in my career as an assistant coach. I look forward to learning and being mentored by coach Rybalka,” said Hunter. Former defenceman Nigel Dube joins the Kodiaks staff as an associate coach. He played for the Kodiaks in the 2007 season when they went onto the national championship. Nigel was recently coaching in Minot in the NAHL. He has been instrumental in turning the franchise around on and off the ice, where many players have gone on to the NCAA during his time in Minot. “This did not come as a surprise to me. When Nigel left Camrose to attend school in Minot and play hockey in the ACHA, we stayed in contact for the next 10 years. What I respect about Nigel the most is that he listened.

He wanted to get into coaching right away and we talked and, although sometimes you might not want to hear things, I told him to stay in school and get his degree and gain experience. Well, now he has his masters, and he has gained experience in marketing, coaching and life,” explained Rybalka. “The community of Camrose will soon see the passion, knowledge and love of the game that he has. He will be meeting many people, businesses and the players in the very near future. I am excited to be able to mentor Nigel as I believe he will have a great career in hockey. Nigel reminds me of a young mini me.” Dube said, “I am excited and honoured to be coming back to Camrose to a program with such great history and success on and off the ice. I am looking forward to working with and being mentored by one of the best coaches in the game.” The coaching additions came as a result of a huge loss. “I want to thank a longtime Kodiak coach who has been an unbelievable asset to our organization and he will continue to help mentor during the upcoming year. Coach Doug Fleck has helped me over the past 20 years that we have been together and it has been an amazing journey. “Most importantly, Doug has been a loyal friend and that is something that will last a lifetime,” concluded Rybalka.

Her children were excited to discover five white eggs, which then hatched on June 30 and each bird survived. They weren’t the only ones curious about the nests; Arends said that lots of people would watch what they were doing as they unlocked and lowered the nests for inspection each week. “For the most part, people were very curious, especially kids,” Arends said. “Almost every time we went down, people would come up to ask us questions which I thought was great. I would explain what we were doing. If you are interested and you have questions, feel free to come and ask us.” She added that explaining what they were doing was exciting for her children. “It was really cool to see them so excited about watching the birds grow,” Arends said. “When other kids would come, they would get to teach about the birds.” She said she was surprised that they needed to throw out the sparrow’s nests as they often contained eggs. She was also surprised that the purple martin parents didn’t mind them handling the babies. The family has already asked to be landlords again next year which Carson Hvenegaard, Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship coordinator for the City of Camrose, says is quite common of landlords. “Most people are very happy to keep doing it,” Hvenegaard said. “It’s a really neat chance for people who are interested in animals or nature to be able to really get up close and personal with animals. You take care of your nests over the summer and can get to know the birds and see the chicks as they hatch and grow up.” The last three birds that the Arends family cared for were banded in order to track them. “With the bands, they have a specific ID number,” Hvenegaard said. “If they come back next year, we can read the number and see how old the birds are and where they dispersed.” The society manages 20 purple martin houses with support from the City, with another 60 privately owned. Landlords are found as new houses are built. A new purple martin house will be installed this fall on the east shore of the lake in Valleyview. “It’s quite a big variety of volunteers,” Hvenegaard said. “We’ve got many older people who have done this for lots of years and then there’s young people like Katie who want to get their kids involved.”

Alberta’s unharvested crop crisis still looms By Wes Taylor, MLA Battle River-Wainwright

This past week I had the privilege, to be in Hardisty, for the announcement from Enbridge that they are now putting shovels in the ground and work will begin on Line 3 replacement. This announcement is not only good for the people of Hardisty, but also the people of Alberta. Thank-you, and congratulations, Enbridge for following through on this project to the point where we are now getting ready to put shovels in the ground. The last couple of years has not been the easiest time for energy companies in Alberta, for a number of reasons. Companies like Enbridge are one of the reasons that Alberta became one of the best places in the world to raise a family, and it is good to see them willing to stick it out with us in hard times as well. This is a reminder that, even when faced with the obstacles of low oil prices and excessive additional costs imposed by government, Albertans and our energy industry finds a way to persevere and succeed. But make no mistake Line 3 is not a “new” pipeline approval like the Federal Liberals or the NDP would have you believe. This is a repair/replacement exercise. If not repaired or replaced time might have played upon it and failure somewhere on the line would have been inevitable. Similarly, Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline also already exists in B.C. Both Line 3 and the Kinder Morgan pipeline in B.C. are best described in terms of roads. Line 3 was like a failing road and must be repaired so that no one would have an accident on it. Kinder Morgan could be compared to a highway that’s seeing too much traffic and now we have to twin it. No social license should have been needed. Sound business practices should have fast-tracked both of these projects. This project, to replace and upgrade sections of the existing Line 3 pipeline between Hardisty and Superior, Wisconsin, is a massive undertaking, one that we hope will mean jobs and continued economic benefit to the people of Hardisty, Provost and Alberta. To that point I had the pleasure of meeting with management from a local company, Safety First Muirhead’s Ltd., a few weeks ago and discussing with them the issues they were having applying for work within the project. I’m happy to say that was, to a point, resolved and that a local company and local people will be direct beneficiaries of the project. This project is further confirmation of what Albertans and our caucus have always known, that pipelines are the safest and most efficient way to get our world-class energy products to market. It is unfortunate that this fact was ignored, along with National Energy Board approval, by government in the case of the Northern Gateway pipeline. When political points become more important that the rational, objective, and science-based process of the NEB, Albertans and Canadians lose out on the greater energy security and economic benefits that a new pipeline would bring. While I know that Albertans would like to see new pipelines instead of just upgrades or replacements, this is a good first step. But it is just a first step, and one approval grudgingly given by the federal government will not be enough to help restore the Alberta advantage. I, and my UCP caucus colleagues, will be working tirelessly to make sure that announcements like the one today become the norm, and not the exception. You can contact Wes Taylor, MLA Battle RiverWainwright at his office 780-842-6177 or fax 780842-3171.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Pictured at one of her favourite spots in Camrose, on the Mirror Lake walking trail, councillor Agnes Hoveland takes a moment to reflect on the past three years on council.

Councillor Hoveland honoured to sit on council By Lori Larsen

Residents of Camrose will be going to the polls on Oct. 16 to check boxes in votes for a mayor and eight City council members, positions within our city that occupy a great deal of commitment and responsibility. Some of the present City councillors answered a few questions about their experiences in an effort to enlighten residents about the duty of sitting on City council. In speaking with councillor Agnes Hoveland, her responses were as follows. What has your experience on council taught you about Camrose, the community and municipal governance? “It has truly been an honour and a privilege to serve. Over the last three and a half years, I have become increasingly aware of how vibrant and caring this community really is. “We are privileged to live and work in a unique community like Camrose with all its services and amenities.” Agnes commented on the opportunity she has had as councillor to learn about the ins and outs of municipal government. “There is much to learn when it comes to the Municipal Government Act and all the entities, agencies, departments and bylaws, that make up the municipality and how it is governed. “I have enjoyed the challenge and am grateful for all of the help and support from our administration and from my council colleagues.” What has been one of the most rewarding and

one of the most challenging parts of being on council? “It has been gratifying to experience more directly the pride, concern, passion and love citizens have for their community. “The challenges are how best to decide and deliver, in a timely manner, on the needs and wants within the community given budget constraints and the economic climate.” What do you feel is the most important role of a city councillor? In responding, Agnes noted the importance of listening and learning. “To continually learn and listen, to be well informed, striving to make wise, fiscally prudent, strategic, creative and visionary decisions. Decisions

made now are not for a term of office, but to build on a community vision of 20, 30 and 50 years in the future. What do you think contributes to a balanced perspective on council? “With a common commitment to serve, the mayor and councillors, from varied professional and business backgrounds, together with the administrative team, each bring their life experience and knowledge to the table. “We may have differing opinions and approaches on issues, but strive to be collaborative and always respectful. What commitments including time, can a person expect as a City councillor? “There is considerable reading and prep work prior to committee of the whole and council meetings held the first and third Mondays of each month. These meetings generally last four to six hours.” Aside from the scheduled meetings, Agnes indicated there can be a great deal of time spent attending to a variety of other commitments. “As well, we each serve on numerous committees, boards and commissions and attend as many events within the community as possible.” What advice would you give to anyone considering running for council? “Step out and do it,” she said without hesitation. “It is a rewarding experience to learn and to serve and I am glad I chose to accept the challenge. I do understand the challenge of maintaining a healthy work-life balance which is vital. Also, good support at home is essential.” When asked if she was considering running again for council Agnes replied, “Much can happen between now and October, but yes, I hope to run for re-election.”

A bag of love and heart of gold By Lori Larsen Children are our most precious commodity, our hope for the future and should therefore be nurtured with love and support. For Jewel Lien that goes without saying and her passion to ensure children are cared for reaches great distances. As the coordinator and office manager for Bags of Love–East Central Alberta, Jewel has helped establish an initiative with a mandate to make the lives of children displaced from their homes safer and happier and give them back an identity that is often swept away in the turmoil. “I was at a church potluck and one of the older ladies (Beulah Osland) just walked past my table and dropped this pile of papers in front of me, never said a word just kept on walking,” recalled Jewel of how she first heard about the initiative. Jewel eventually read the information about the Its My Very Own Bags of Love (name associated with the association developed out of the United States) and a story of children being removed from a home that was a methamphetamine lab, Jewel knew she was hooked. “The idea was these displaced children would have something they can call their own.” The Bags of Love–East Central Alberta began working out of the Camrose Seventh-day Adventist Church basement (now an old Alliance church in Tofield) with two chapters, in Camrose and Vegreville. “We started out with a $3,000 donation through a place called ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency),” said Jewel. After the third year, generous donations including quilt material, bag items and volunteer time to sew quilts and organize the bags, came from people all over Alberta and help to make the program thrive. In turn the program has enabled the donors and volunteers, who really just want to make a difference in a child’s life. “Children are taken out of their homes and 90 per cent of them go with nothing, or if they do have anything it is all in a black garbage bag. Bags of Love is meant to give them back an identity.” These children usually do not want to leave their home, it is, in most instances, the only home they have known, good or bad, so the idea of being removed is not only confusing but in many instances frightening. “That child is

at an extremely vulnerable place .” The bags consist of homemade, colourful drawstring cloth bags filled with items vital to providing children with hope and security, including a stuffed toy and homemade quilt. In a pocket on the outside of the bag are personal care items the child would require that evening and a heartfelt letter that tells the child there is hope and encourages them when they grow up to help other children. For a complete listing of items visit the Bags of Love website at bagsofloveeca.wixsite.com/ bagsoflove. The bags are made for five age group categories in both female and male, 0 to 18 months, 18 months to three years, four to seven years, eight to 12 years and 13 up to 18, but rarely go past 15 years of age. Jewel ran with the idea and through her own tenacity and passion and the help of many volunteers and donors has seen the program grow leaps and bounds servicing over 27 Child Services Offices in Alberta and now one in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. In explaining the important role Bags of Love plays in these displaced children’s lives, Jewel warmly related a story of a two-year-old girl who was removed from her home as a result of domestic fight. “This little girl was picked up by this police officer. He took her to meet with Child Services and somehow this little darling felt safe with this officer. She didn’t want him putting her down, she wanted to stay in his arms.” When the Bag of Love was presented by one of the program supervisors the police officer assisted the little girl in opening the bag and as they both peeked into the bag the little girl removed the

quilt, stuck her thumb in her mouth, curled up on the couch and fell sound asleep. “When I heard that story, that was it, I knew I had to do this because it does make a difference.” Since its inception Bags of Love-Central Alberta has gone from giving out 50 bags the first year to now over 500 and the threads extending from the original initiative are far reaching. When there are extra items that can not be used, such as quilts, Jewel ensures they are given to other organizations. Signs of Safety an extension of the program out of Edmonton, sees to it that children living in destitute situations, prior to being displaced, are receiving their own Bags of Love and Jewel is also helping a teen crisis, one night shelter in Edmonton assist displaced teens by supplying personal care items. Besides her devoted work with Bags of Love, Jewel is a mother and grandmother. Along with her husband Dale, she is also a foster parent to a 13-year-old boy who, due to behaviour problems as a result of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, was removed from previous foster care and would have been placed in a group home. “I just couldn’t let that happen.” She does admit foster parenting is not an easy journey, this boy still struggles, but to her it is worth the challenge. And Jewel does not appear to be the type to turn away from a challenge, especially when it comes to helping children. “Whenever I am at the end of my rope I go into my Bags of Love place and it feeds my soul.” Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? May 23, 1928 ~ August 14, 2017 Mr. Raymond Proskow passed away peacefully in Camrose, Alberta, on Aug. 14, 2017, at the age of 89 years. He was born to Joseph and Mary Proskow, on a farm near Round Hill, Alberta, where his parents homesteaded. Ray was involved in many volunteer projects with branches of the Camrose Canadian Legion and Camrose Elks Club. With the Legion, he chaired the annual Poppy Fund Campaign for many years with great success. On Remembrance Day every year, he placed a poppy on the grave of each war veteran buried in the Ukrainian Catholic church cemetery. Ray held an executive position with the Elks Club (his mother thought he belonged to an animal organization), and with them, accomplished much senior care service work. Ray loved Ukrainian songs, listened to them weekly on local CFCW radio programs and, as a hobby, collected Ukrainian records. Ray joined the Camrose chapter of the Barbershop Chorus and Quartet, and sang lead. Ray was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary; his sisters, Stella, Helen, Olga and Judy; his brother Fred, and twins Peter and Paul; his niece, Darlene; and his nephews, Douglas Norman, and Wayne. Left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Tony and Morris; eight nieces; seven nephews; and numerous great-grand nieces and nephews. Ray was particularly grateful to his neighbours, Mark and Cindy West, Alec Shute, Allan Sherbaniuk, Ann Sherbaniuk, Dennis Sherbaniuk, and Johnny Boychuk, for all their help in times of need. Ray’s presence among us will be sorrowfully missed. Ray’s carefree spirit will remain as a testament to a lifetime of achievement and fulfillment. God bless you, Ray. We love you. Dumkee drives in luxury with his Mercury Meteor By Murray Green

Everbody loves the slanted power rear window on the 1965 Mercury (and Ford) Meteor. It added class to an already luxury vehicle. Don Dumkee from Bittern Lake treasures his black and white model. “I’ve had the car for about five years. All I have done to the car is some brake work and regular maintenance,” explained Don. “I changed all of the fluids when I purchased it. Somebody put radial tires on it, but I changed them back to bias ply tires, which I thought if it is going to be classed as a survivor, it should have the original type of tires. It has been trouble free for me.” Starting in 1949, Meteor had been offered by MercuryLincoln dealers throughout Canada as a mid-priced model, comfortably positioned between Ford and Mercury. It was highly popular brand, taking nearly 11 per cent of sales in its first year on the market. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, more and more Canadians opted for compact cars like the Nash Rambler and the Studebaker Lark. For the 1960 model year, the big three car makers got into the small car arena with cars of their own. Ford fielded the Falcon and MeteorMercury-Lincoln dealers sold the Frontenac. Ford captured 46 per cent of all compact sales in Canada in 1960. Unfortunately, many of those sales came at the expense of the larger, more expensive Monarch and Meteor. Both grand names disappeared at the end of the 1961 season. As the compact phenomenon stalled, the Meteor name was called out of retirement in 1964. But this time the automobile was based on a Mercury shell, not a Ford body as had been the tradition since 1949. The entire price range was lowered because Meteor was being set up to take on Pontiac. Since its start was a last minute decision, the 1964 Meteor differed from Mercury only in minor details. Aside from the Meteor badging, it carried a Ford instrument

panel and was not as well trimmed. Bigger changes came in 1965. Meteors were given distinctive front and rear designs as well as special side trim. Ford-style roofs were grafted onto the Mercury bodies. Following Rambler’s trend-setting lead in 1963, Meteor was given curved side glass for 1965. Meteor shared upholstery with Ford and was given the Avenger 240-cubic inch, six-cylinder engine. The car has a long history of valuable service. “This car was bought new in Wetaskiwin at Pahal Motors by the Peacock family from Bawlf, precisely Margaret Peacock. She drove it as long as she could. Then she passed it on to her daughter. But, she didn’t like the car, so she parked it for 17 years

until her mother passed away,” recalled Don. “The daughter then gave it to her daughter, Margaret’s granddaughter. She licenced it and drove it for awhile. She then parked it and sold it out of the family. A neighbour of mine brought it home, but his wife wouldn’t ride in it. He kept for a couple of years and then sold it to me.” A call for a helping hand brought the car and new owner together. “What appealed to me most about this car was the breezeway rear window. I was called by this farmer to help him do some work on a grain auger one morning and I saw the back of this car sticking out the back of a garage with a for sale sign on it,” said Don. “I asked him how much and I bought it off of him.”

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Senator Betty Unger is asking for recommendations of outstanding Albertans to receive the Senate of Canada 150 Medal. If you know someone in Camrose or surrounding area who volunteers a lot for the community, nominate them to receive the special Senate of Canada 150 medal. The medal celebrates the sesquicentennial anniversary of the first sitting of the Senate on Nov. 6, 1867 and was created to give an opportunity to recognize Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities. “I was very pleased to be a part of the Senate Advisory Working Group which worked on the creation of this program and the design of the medal,” Unger said. “Canada’s 150th is a great

opportunity to recognize some of the incredible Canadians whose contributions, volunteer efforts and dedication to their local communities help to make our country a better place to live.” To be eligible for the Senate 150 Medal, a person must be thoroughly involved in their community and through generosity, dedication, volunteerism and hard work, make their home town, community, region, province or territory a better place. They must also be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, but need not necessarily reside in Canada. Additional eligibility details can be found at www.bettyunger.ca. Medals will be awarded in November.

Keep food safe while camping By Alberta Health Services

So, you are hitting the trails and planning on taking some lunch or perhaps you are doing an overnight hike. It’s important to pack your food properly, both before you leave and when you’re on the trail. Bacteria that can make you sick (e.g. salmonella) need certain conditions to survive. They grow well in foods that are moist and rich in protein (e.g. meat, poultry, dairy products) and between the temperatures of 4° to 60°C (40° to 140°F). In the right conditions, bacteria can multiply every 20 minutes. This can quickly make your food unsafe to eat. To keep your food cool in the back country, precook all perishable foods and plan to eat them first, freeze food before you leave and try to pack it all together, pack perishable foods in ice or with freezer packs, store food in lakes or streams when you’re at your campsite (remember to use airtight plastic bags to keep the water out). Other tips about food in the back country: Always wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before handling any food. Do not handle or prepare food if you’re not feeling well. Bacteria doesn’t grow well on dry or acidic food. Bring dry foods (e.g. nuts, dried fruit) and packaged foods that can be rehydrated. Pack food in reusable containers that can be cleaned and used for repacking. (This will help create less waste.) If you have to mix ingredients, do it just before eating them. Take food that doesn’t need to be kept cool. (Remember that canned food is heavy and the cans will have to be carried back out.) Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk doesn’t need to be kept cold when it’s unopened (but it must be used right away, or kept cold after it’s opened). You can also use powdered skim milk. Mix the powder with water you’ve already filtered and boiled. You can buy dehydrated meals in some stores. Plan to eat the whole meal right after you rehydrated it. Don’t keep any rehydrated food to eat later. Store food away from animals, in food storage lockers, on high platforms, or hung in a tree with rope or cable. Never bring food into tents or sleeping areas. For more information on staying healthy while in the back country visit: https://myhealth.alberta. ca/Alberta/Pages/packingfood-backcountry.aspx.

Sahakarini is moving ahead with great plans for the coming year. At the annual meeting on June 5, attended by over 50 people, Laurie and Michael Barr spoke about the importance of community and the parallels between Sahakarini community here and the communities in other countries where its projects are fulfilled. It is the power of the communities both here and abroad that make change possible. Encouraging healthy and vigorous communities will continue to be Sahakarini’s emphasis in the coming year. Sahakarini has chosen a new tagline to accompany its sometimes mystifying name. (The name Sahakarini is actually a word in Hindi that means “cooperation” or “working across,” but it is often difficult for people to remember.
