Camrose residential areas and the business community always look great but the City really comes alive on Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day weekends. It is on these three weekends that the striking red and white colors of

three hundred additional Canadian flags

dresses up the community. The Flag Project fundraiser offered by Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak will be evident this weekend when Rotary members crisscross Camrose installing the full-sized Canadian flags with 8-foot flagpoles on private properties. Rotarians will return after the long weekend to pick up and store the flags and poles until next May. The Flag Project goes beyond providing goodwill, good friendship and strong patriotism. This is a key fundraiser for The Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak Club. Support of the program allows approximately $8,000 to be raised, annually, assuring the amazing work of this community service organization continues in our simply irresistible City.

Universal Bottle Depot honoured for local community support

By Murray Green

The Alberta Bottle Depot Association congratulated the Universal Bottle Depot through the Applaud program. Camrose customer Becky Anderson praised local bottle depot owner Grace Torpe for being an active community member. “I have been going to this depot since I was a child with my mom and every single time we go, Grace and her staff are always smiling and helpful,” said Becky. “Grace has run this depot for many years. I appreciate the fact they remember my name, help me sort and count my cans and bottles, and carry them. Grace does so much for the community by allowing bottle drives to help support cadets, guides and also supports the Camrose Legion by volunteering herself for numerous events that helps our community. Every Thursday she volunteers to help run bingo after running her own business. Our community is blessed to have Grace and her staff.” Grace is the president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, has helped out in collection of food for the local food bank and helped the local Bailey Theatre. “The Applaud A Depot Campaign encourages customers to send positive and

Letters to the Editor School Daze

“Back to school” is in the air. That bittersweet mix– tinges of regret that summer is ending; excitement and maybe some apprehension as a new school year begins; maybe looking forward to seeing friends again; wondering what the teachers will be like… For many years, the rhythm of the school year was the rhythm of my life. There were of course the student years–Grades 1 to 12 and some university years after that. During the seven years I was a public school teacher, the rhythms of the school year dominated. For a brief but intense time, I experienced being a public school board trustee–quite a different rhythm. First day, remember the first day of school? Remember enjoying the new supplies, wondering what the new school year would bring? “Fresh beginning” and “anything is possible” is the mood I remember. Flashback to my first day of Grade 1. My dad took me to school and, as it turned out, took me to the wrong school. There was some confusion as I was shuffled around to the correct school later in the day. In both locations, I had not been in a room with so many other children before, or in a room with desks. Lots to take in. A different memory a generation later, first day of Grade 1 for my firstborn child–releasing him into an environment dominated by adults and children beyond my control. How would my child do in that environment? Would he be safe? Would he have fun? Would he make friends? Noticing other parents having the same experience… And later, with both my children, dealing with the fact that the teacher was now often a more important adult than I was in the life of my child. Before the beginning

Like everything in life, the first day is never really the first day. It’s a marker, but it began earlier… Students and parents are gathering supplies and arranging whatever else will be needed. Recently my now-middle-aged daughter, with shining face, reminded me of her excitement the day her grandma took her shopping for a first day of Grade 1 outfit. For young adults leaving home to go away to school, many more aspects need to be arranged. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, others are taking care of administrative things–staffing, facilities, supplies, funds. For teachers and administrators, the official first day of school, when students arrive, is not the first day. I live near a school and noticed several weeks ago, the parking lot beginning to fill with vehicles of people preparing for the day the students arrive.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Unite

The Unite the Right vote which happened on July 22, in my view has made history. I worked two shifts back to back and on top of that I did

not get a pin in order to vote. I was too busy working hard in order to put food on the table. This government has made it hard for people like me to pay the bills month to month. I am in favor of the merger. Yet I am very disappointed that I was not given a pin so my voice could be heard. I do have concerns of the low voter turnout out. This will stop the voter splitting which helped place the NDP into power. The problem with the pins may have contributed to the low voter turnout. This will increase our caucus from 22 members to 30 members. This will help for now. This also depends on who becomes the leader

of this new party and whether the centre, who are the Alberta Liberals and the Alberta Party, will follow the same path which the parties of the right have followed. This will be up to the voters in the next Alberta election. This merger is not a 100 per cent shoe in for this new party. As a member of the Wildrose Party, I do hope that our new party will form the next government in the 2019 provincial election. Time will tell whether or not we have a good result or a very disappointing one. Lorne Vanderwoude Camrose

BRCF assists St. Mary’s Hospital The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose Foundation. The grant is income from the Norma Branes Fund. The fund was created to support projects at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose and provides an annual grant. This year’s grant will support equipment purchases. The Battle River Com-

munity Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The princi-

pal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4,470,000 to support community facilities and programs such as those at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose.

The millennials

The first day of school for this year’s Grade 12 students is a reminder of another marker. This year, 2017, is the first year when some students graduating from Grade 12 were born in the 21st century. And in 2018, most Grade 12 grads will have been born in the 21st century. A marker indeed. Makes me think about all that my parents and grandparents and I experienced in the 20th century that does not have meaning for today’s high school graduates. This also reminds me of the Great Divide–those who have never experienced Life Before Digital, and those who have had to adapt to digital. Done

One thing different about school compared to every other job I’ve ever had–you actually do finish. Whether you’re a student, a teacher or an administrator, once a year, you’re done. The school year is complete. For better or worse, done well or not, you are done, done, done. It is finished. And once a year, ready or not, you begin with a fresh start. There’s something therapeutic about a rhythm where you can mark completions and new beginnings– with a break in between. ***

I’d love to hear from you. What do you remember about First Day of School? If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send me an email at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Q. A:

What is a “Smart Home?”

If you’re planning to build a new home, one of the most important tthings for you to consider is getting the pre-wiring in place so your new home p can indeed become a super smart home. “We can wire a building for the future,” says Jeff Ordze. “If someone wants to start small and build up their system over time, we can install the infrastructure to create a system that does almost anything. Your imagination is the limit.” From your phone, no matter how far away, you can turn up the heat, flip on the lights, play your favorite music, ignite a fireplace, start the oven, adjust the window coverings and lock the front door. SECURITY SYSTEMS Comsec, the security division of AVU, specializes in 24-hour security monitoring, alarms systems and video surveillance. Yvan Gagnon can install a system as simple as one stationary camera up to a multi-level configuration that includes motion sensors, pressure sensors, multi-position cameras and 24-hour monitoring that protects your family and your property. Q.

What is the newest, most exciting trend in travel?

A:

It’s loosely labelled Your aadventure Your way and it is the hottest way to really see the world in a very affordable way. Many of our companies have gone to great lengths to develop deep relationships with countries, their home-grown businesses and their citizens. The goal is to move tourism much closer to serious exploration. Small travel groups, local hotels, local guides, involvement only with local business. Imagine organized e-cycling through the Black Forest of Germany; a tenting/hiking tour of the Swiss Alps; a luxury week-long bush camp in the heart of Africa; or meeting farm families from beautiful Vietnam. We could put you into a kayak trip in Slovenia, or a back-country trek during springtime to smell the cherry blossoms of old Japan. Imagine having a home-cooked meal in Sicily or listening to a guide born in Kenya passionately explain native wildlife. Now any country of the world is yours to see and discover in a compelling way. Our favourite representative from Exodus Travels will be with us in Camrose on September 21 to share more information. Call now to reserve your spot.

Users often wind up with unwanted or malicious software when they are trying to either update or download legitimate software. It often happens in one of two ways: the user searches for the software in Google or Bing and then clicks on the wrong link, or during the installation process the software installs additional programs if certain options are not deselected. To protect yourself, double check where the software is coming from. For example, if you need to download a program from Adobe, confirm that the website you’re downloading it from is in fact adobe.com. Also, whenever possible, allow software to update itself instead of going to look for the updates. When you’re installing downloaded software, even from legitimate sites, proceed cautiously through the install and keep an eye out for checkboxes which indicate that you are installing additional software as well. When in doubt, uncheck the box.

How did your business earn such a good reputation for customer service?

A:

Dale Carriere, is an example of those very special Home Hardware t people who help our contractors and p consumer clients. He works in our plumbing and electrical department but, frankly, he is knowledgeable about virtually all aspects of construction and our overall product line. Dale solves problems for people. With incredible patience, and the ability to teach, he can explain the purpose of special electrical or plumbing components, how they function and correct installation process. One day he will be helping a novice install a switch. The next day he might be filling a cart with plumbing supplies for a new basement bathroom project. He can predict items which will ultimately be required in a build or renovation; because he has, no doubt, previously done the same project on his own. We’ve watched admirably as this specialist, by phone, has deciphered a problem for a client based on a photo texted to our electrical department. He has also solved problems by relaying how-to videos to clients. These days, he is busy helping clients prepare ducts and furnaces for fall. He’s a busy guy! Answer provided by

What makes your ag lending unique in todays marketplace?

A:

We make sure we are better at understanding the agriculture business. We employ people very wellversed in the world of agriculture and add extensive training to ensure our ag specialists truly understand the current, specific needs of their clients. On the product side, we have developed a slate of products and services that meet farm families daily operating requirements. As partners in the complex business of farming, our goal is to meet the long-term financial requirements of every one of our clients. While competitors may have strict, typically unwavering rules in the area of farm finance, we pride ourselves on our flexibility. We understand the fickle nature of mother nature, ever-changing marketplace pricing and the inevitable machinery breakdowns and other surprises in the world of farming. We make lending easy, too. Our ag specialists will talk business at a kitchen table or in the field on a tailgate of a pickup truck if office location or standard operating hours are not convenient. Mason Kucy of Camrose captured his second title of the season after being declared co-champion of his home town Junior Open in Camrose earlier this summer. Kucy fired a steady 3-over par 74 to win by a single shot. At Black Bull, Aug. 17 near Ma-Me-O Beach, Jarrett Bossert of Belvedere and Camrose’s Devin Kucy

Jayla Kucy placed tied for 13th out of some of the best 106 golfers in the world on Aug. 3 to 5.

headed back to the treacherous par-4 ninth hole for a sudden-victory playoff. Bossert and Kucy had gone into survival mode out there and turned in scores of 6-over par 79 to earn their spot in the playoff. Kucy struggled hitting his tee shot into a

lateral water hazard, while Bossert made a conservative bogey-5. Jayla, Mason and Devin Kucy all qualified for the tour championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort in Ponoka on Aug. 28. Jace Shannon of Forestburg also qualified.

Peewee baseball team second at westerns By Murray Green

The Camrose Cougars peewee triple-A baseball team earned silver medals at westerns in Spruce Grove on Aug. 17 to 20. Camrose advanced to the final against the powerful Abbotsford Angels, dropping a 10-0 decision. “It started out as a pitching battle until Camrose pitcher Connor Hoglund was hit in the knee with a hit straight up the middle. He tried to continue pitching, but after a few more batters had to leave the game,” said Sheila Logelin of the team. Hoglund threw the first three innings before giving way to Evan Williams. The Cougars knocked off the Regina Buffaloes 6-2 in the semifinals to reach the medal game. Dylan Soch pitched a solid game on the mound going six innings and allowing just two runs on eight hits, while striking out seven batters. Tag Layton came in relief for one inning allowing one walk and two hits, while striking out one.

Road rehabilitations

“If we were to spend basically another $500,000 this year that would put us more or less right along that line of the $3 million we were planning on doing.” Projects from the 2018 budget were considered, however, they all involved the lengthy local improvement process and therefore could not be advanced one year ahead. Project 903 (Camrose Drive/68 Street) was identified as the best option. “Because it is not a 2017-18 project we don’t have funding approval right now by council,” explained Enarson. Councilor PJ Stasko inquired as to whether completing this project at this time would be cost efficient considering the upcoming Valleyview West (next phase) 68 Street/Camrose Drive traffic interruption. Enarson replied “We do anticipate there are going to be some significant upgrades at that intersection, with future phases of that development and we obviously don’t want to see throw away costs, but the scope of the actual improvements are really at the intersection itself. A section right at the intersection will potentially have some throw away costs. “While we do have some tentative plans from the developer things could change. The intersection of Camrose Drive and 68 Street is probably one of the worst areas along this stretch of roadway and even though we may run the risk of potentially redoing some work, if there are any changes or a downturn in economy and the developer doesn’t proceed with plans we would be doing everything except the really bad section.”

City council voted in favour of a motion made by councillor Max Lindstrand to approve the addition of Project 903, Camrose Drive/68 Street rehabilitation, from Marler Drive to Parkview Drive to the 2017 capital budget, to an estimated total cost of $500,000, with funding from the Federal Gas Tax Fund. The motion came as a result of discussion from Committee of Whole meeting on Aug. 21 initiated by city administration recommending council advance the project (903) from the 2019 budget into 2017. This is the result of the planned 2017 road rehabilitation projects coming in approximately $500,000 under budget. “Border Paving was already able to get to many of the projects that we had in the budget this year,” said City of Camrose director of engineering services Jeremy Enarson. “As a result we have a little bit of time, realistically before the end of the possible construction season, and we (City) have had an opportunity, to date, to look at various projects versus what was budgeted.” Enarson went on to explain that as a result of advantageous pricing from Border Paving, and costs of some projects coming in lower than anticipated the city could potentially have another approximately $500,000 worth of work. According to Enarson the estimated $500,000 is what is remaining from this year’s $3 million dollar budget for road rehabilitation. The plan to spend approximately $3 million per year until 2025 was one of the recommendations made by Tetra Tech in 2015 after an extensive roadway condition assessment.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.

To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants.

This year’s UDF program began August 10, 2017, starting with Zone A (in Area 2) and will continue for two to three months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regard to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Melissa Henderson at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428.

It was followed by “Fly (The Angel Song),” also a number one in Canada. A second album, Here and Now, produced the group’s last American top 40 hit in “Jimmy’s Got a Girlfriend.” After-

ward, the trio recorded three more albums, one of which was not released, and a greatest hits package. In the late 2000s, the Wilkinsons disbanded. Amanda and Tyler founded a new duo called Small Town Pistols in 2012. Now the family is back together for a Canadian tour.

Father Steve Wilkinson performs with his daughter Amanda and son Tyler to form The Wilkinsons, who will be playing at the Bailey Theatre on Sept. 1.

Camrose swim club member sterling example of dedication By Lori Larsen As a dedicated swimmer of the Camrose Sea Serpents Swim Club and now a lifeguard, Carter Rolston is a somewhat permanent fixture at the Camrose Aquatic Centre pool and one that is highly regarded by his swim coach Shane Gau, other members of the club and community. This remarkable young man epitomizes what hard work and focus can achieve. “Albert Summer Swim Association (ASSA) members are eligible to swim a winter club meet if any of the swimmers qualify before a certain date,” said coach Gau. “Seven swimmers across the province that swam summer club made it and Carter was one of them to compete against the all-year winter club swimmers.” This is quite a feat considering as a member of the ASSA, Carter only trains four months of the year, compared to 10 months for winter club swimmers. Last year Camrose Swim Club sent one person to the winter club senior Long Course Championship and this year Carter was able to qualify. This was his second time, having qualified in 2012. “This year I qualified for both my 50 metre breaststroke and my 100 metre breaststroke,” said Carter proudly. “It was pretty tough to get those times because it was at the start of our season. “I was fortunate enough to get them and then at the actual meet with the All Stars Team I was able to swim four races. So I swam the 50 metre breaststroke, 100 metre breaststroke and both the 100 and 50 metre freestyle.” To qualify Carter had to beat the qualifying time standards consisting of 50 metre breaststroke 32.9 seconds and 100 metre breaststroke 1:12.4 minutes.

His qualifying time for the 50 metre breaststroke was 32.53 seconds and for the 100 metre breaststroke 1:11.73. His race times at the competition were 50 metre breaststroke 33.57 seconds and 100 metre breaststroke 1:16.63. The other two races Carter swam in during the competition included times for the 50 metre freestyle 26.94 seconds and 100 metre freestyle 59.85 seconds. The slight time increase from his qualifying times to competition times was attributed to competing in a 50 metre pool versus the 25 metre pool he is used to training in at the Camrose pool where he would benefit from pushing off the pool wall halfway through the race. “At that meet the age group was 16 and over so I was racing against university CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) swimmers and Olympian swimmers gearing up for the world championships in Budapest. Just to swim against those guys was a good experience,” explained Carter. Coach Gau explained summer club swimmers are also faced with the challenge, during this competition, of swimming early in their training season ver-

sus the winter swim clubs that are nearing the end of their training season. “We are sending swimmers to this meet at a huge disadvantage because of our shorter training season and the timing of our season.” In his competition group, boys 16 years and over, Carter swam against 60 to 70 other competitors and held a strong middle of the pack position. “It was a lot of fun to face those challenges.” Carter demonstrates a strong, positive attitude not only about his swimming but life in general. He began swimming at sixyears-old and exemplifies what good work ethics can do. “From a coaching standpoint, Carter has always been one of my most dedicated swimmers in the pool and he is our leader,” commented coach Gau. “His work ethic is second to none; every practice he gives us everything he has and I look at the success of our entire team and a lot of that has to do with his leadership in the pool. Everyday setting such a good example for all of our swimmers. “Carter is outstanding at what he does and is an elite athlete and I was really proud of his accomplishments. Every time he

gets into the pool he seems to find another gear, which is truly amazing.” In June of this year Carter also competed in a Lifesaving Sport in Toronto with three other Alberta team members. “Our relay team achieved two golds and two national records. It was an honour to be a part of that team.” On top of being a dedicated, competitive swimmer Carter achieves top marks as a student, works as a lifeguard at the pool and intends on attending the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus in the fall in science studies. “We received numerous comments from the officials on the pool deck about the respect he shows and how polite he is,” added Gau. “He is definitely a well rounded individual and I really believe that your better athletes display that kind of maturity.”

Not to rest his own laurels, Carter humbly admits that his success and the success of the club are largely due to the coaching team. “The thing that separates Camrose from a lot of the other clubs within the province is how dedicated and experienced our coaches are. It makes it a lot easier as a swimmer.” When asked what lessons Carter would share with other young people he didn’t hesitate to answer. “Being involved in sports builds character, perseverance, dedication and hard work ethics and a lot of it is about goal building and achieving those goals.” Referring to a quote used by Andy Lyster, Camrose Composite High School physical education teacher Carter proclaimed, “If you are going to be here...be here. Don’t waste your time get the most out of it.”

Arts Society seeks your help in planning, hosting local events Submitted

The Camrose Arts Society plays host to a variety of exciting arts events and programs throughout the year. Things kick off with the Camrose Arts and Recreation Program, which offers many classes for ages five to adult. This program runs in two sessions from January to June, and September to December. There are teaching and volunteer opportunities available. Next is the Camrose Art Walk which celebrates its 22nd year this year. Each year 10 to 12 businesses become mini art galleries and showcase over 50 local and visiting artists from the beginning of June to the beginning of September. There are opportunities for artists, businesses and volunteers with this program. Taking place the at the beginning of June is Jaywalkers Jamboree and the Camrose Arts Society has a

long standing relationship with the Camrose Chamber of Commerce to organize two stages of entertainment throughout the two days. There are opportunities for performers and volunteers for this event. This year marked the resurrection of Arts in the Park which took place on June 17 around the northwest section of Mirror Lake Park walking trail. It featured busker style performers and other activities such as yoga and Tai Chi and artists on location. There were lots of activities for children, vendors and concessions. This event was well received and there are plans to try and make it an annual event taking place each June. There are opportunities for a variety of artists and performers, volunteers and other organization partnerships. June is a busy month as it also marks the official National Indigenous Day Celebration Day on June 21.

ART APPRECIATION Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Art appreciators of all ages showed up for the Camrose Art Society Art Walk Gala Reception held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Aug. 17. Local artist M.J. Kelly, middle left, took time to explain her piece entitled Irish Blow Flower to attendees Annie Mirza, left and Harvey Jones, right.

This year the Camrose Arts Society partnered with University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Camrose Centennial Museum and Battle River School Division and took place at Augustana. It featured three presentations by Calgary dancers Red Thunder-The Next Generation and storytelling with Elder Myrna Yellowbird. We had about 1,600 people attend the event throughout the day. This is an annual event that always welcomes volunteers. During the summer for more than 30 years, with the help of a government grant, we have hosted the Creative Arts Summer Program for ages six to 12. This program takes place at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre and is very popular with the children. The end of September marks the official days for Alberta Culture Days. This is a government initiative that began in 2008 and is intended to make arts and culture available to everyone. Either free or at a very lost cost. Each year we try to do something different and encourage others in the community to also plan things. This initiative welcomes volunteers, artists and other organizations to get involved. If you like the idea of sitting on a board and having input to these projects, or would like to propose and perhaps spearhead some new ones then consider joining the Camrose Arts Society. Phone Jane at 780-6729949 for more details on any of the above opportunities, or plan to attend the AGM on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre. RSVP for the AGM by Sept. 11.

Check insurance before going back to school By Murray Green

Before you send students or yourself to university, there are many things to consider. Clothing, text books, housing, developing a personal budget – it’s an exciting, but labour-intensive endeavor. With all the obvious checked off, one area parents may not consider is to ensure their child is adequately protected from an insurance perspective. Alex Walker, national director, claims relations for RSA Canada, offers information for parents with children attending university in the fall. When do you to get renters insurance? Find out if you are covered on campus. Most home insurance policies have some element of coverage for children under a specified age, while living in residence or away from school. Parents should review their policy limits, or contact their broker to see if they have enough coverage in the event of a loss. Off-campus living needs additional coverage. If living off-campus, sharing an off-campus house or apartment with friends, a student may have to set up a separate tenant’s policy. Tenant’s insurance are often required when renting, but are usually quite affordable as long as there are three or less unrelated people sharing the same house or living in the same apartment. Parents should ensure that their auto policy covers college-age children even while they are away. For more information on areas where students may, or may not be protected under their parent’s policy, contact your insurance provider.

Safe transportation for seniors an alternative to driving By Maria Lobreau, Camrose Seniors Coaltion

Safe driving is often a freedom and an independence we all enjoy. Seniors’ driving is often a sensitive subject no matter who is discussing it. Consideration should be given to many different aspects pertaining to safe driving, which are not always easy to make. As we age one should take into consideration how safe they drive and the safety of their passengers/ others on the roadways. It is very common to feel anxious or in some instances avoidant / neglectful in one’s ability to maintain safe driving practices. In some cases it does not matter how keen one tries to keep their skills, there will eventually come a day when one has to move over to the passenger seat. Approach changes to driving in stages opposed to the “all or nothing” mentality. Talking to your spouse or family is generally the first step, involving your doctor and outside community resources is the next suggestion. Programs like the AMA refresher or DriveABLE are great places to start. Reasons why our driving ability becomes a concern is because as we age our eyes change and focusing takes longer, our eyes become more sensitive to glares, peripheral vision narrows, depth percep-

tion narrows, our hearing often deteriorates, range of motion in our neck deteriorates making shoulder checks difficult, reaction time for incidentals can be slower and cognition changes affect one’s overall function. Driving enables seniors to remain connected to their communities, maintain socialization and access needed services. Losing one’s license has negative consequences like depression, social isolation, loneliness and deterioration in overall day to day functioning. Tips for older drivers include get your eyesight and hearing checked annually, get plenty of sleep, drive defensively, know your limitations, listen to concerns of others, accept assistance when offered and minimize nighttime driving if possible. The benefits of not driving anymore are elimination of the cost of a vehicle, gas, maintenance and insurance, eliminates the stress involved with driving, allows individuals to explore community transportation options and car pooling can be of benefit to the environment. Public transportation (alternatives to driving) in Camrose include the Camrose Community Bus. At $2 per ride it is an affordable accessible transportation asset in our community. The

Camrose Community Bus project has gone through several evolutions over the last year. It currently provides a fixed route service on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers on-demand/group bookings on Mondays and Wednesdays. These services are provided under a contract with the Handivan Society 780-672-8777. The bus is specially equipped with accessible ramps and equipment that safely secures strollers, walkers, and wheelchairs. The bus schedule can be found at www.camrose.ca. The Camrose Community Bus service has been designed to provide transportation options to those segments of our community in most need. The bus has eight stops at designated seniors housing that allows citizens who are no longer comfortable or able to drive to still get around the City. It also has stops at the university, medical facilities and major shopping areas. It is truly a Community Bus as it has become a place where you can meet new people, share stories, and enjoy the company of the friendly bus drivers. So whether you’re a seasoned transit traveler or trying it out for the first time, we are sure you will enjoy the ride.

Economic improvement is really good news By Bruce Hinkley, Wetaskiwin-Camrose

MLA

Good economic news for Albertans! According to the Retail Insider magazine reporter Mario Toneguzzi retail sales numbers in Alberta indicate Alberta has surpassed the prerecession peak reached in October 2014. According to Statistics Canada retail sales in Alberta continue to grow and in April and May reached $6.81 billion. ATB Financial reports that retails sales have increased nine out of the last 10 months. Some of the factors for this growth are higher employment rates and more consumer spending; plus the increase in minimum wages has allowed low income earners more disposable income, which is being spent in the province. Michael Kehoe, with Fairfield Commercial Real Estate says the impact of the economic downturn was short-lived as consumer confidence and spending has returned to a new-normal. Kehoe is seeing Alberta with a more diversified economy and a get-on-with-it business attitude. Also, according to Statistics Canada, the take-home pay of employed Albertans has risen. Alberta has the highest level of wages among the Canadian provinces. Personally, this news reaffirms that government policies were not the cause of the recession and this government did not kill the economy. Such hysteria we heard from the naysayers is faulty again. About $1.5 million has been added to the Alberta Incubator Program. The new services for entrepreneurs, recent graduates and innovators include mentorship opportunities, business advice, product testing space and access to world-class prototyping and manufacturing equipment. I am currently reading Farm Workers in Western Canada–Injustices and Activism (Shirley McDonald, Bob Barnetson 2016) and I’m absolutely convinced that the Farm Safety Enhancement Bill was the morally right decision to provide safety, protection and compensation for farm families and workers. In time Bill 6 may become recognized as one of our best, progressive pieces of legislation. I’m looking for feedback. My Private Members consumer protection Bill 208 has had first reading in the Legislature this spring. Bill 208: “Government Organization (Utilities Consumer Advocate and Electricity Consumer Protection) Amendment Act, 2017 will be debated this fall. It will ensure that residential consumers, farmers and small businesses in Alberta are protected against ‘bad actors’ in the electricity/energy market. It will give the Utilities Consumer Advocate the legislated authority to assist in he resolution of consumer issues, complaints or disputes between a consumer, provider or retailer. Doing his part with every step By Lori Larsen

A neatly dressed elderly gentleman, walking with a walker, picking up garbage maneuvers the sidewalks of downtown Camrose most every day, knowing in his mind this random act will help keep Camrose a beautiful city. Meet 93-year-old, Camrose resident, Sandy Johnson with a mind as sharp as a tack and a wit as quick as a whip. Born and raised in New Norway, Sandy has been living in Camrose since 1987. As an ordained Pentecostal pastor, Sandy with his wife Lillian (since passed away), travelled around doing fill-in ministries. “After a pastor would resign it would usually take them (the church) any where from three to five months to get a new pastor,” said Sandy explaining the premise behind fill-in ministries. “So I would go and fill in until they got a new pastor.” Once in Camrose they purchased a property on 48 Street and settled down. Born into a family of nine children, Sandy was the youngest of four brothers Marvin of Camrose, Herman of New Norway and Clifford of most recently Calgary (all have since passed). The only two remaining siblings are Sandy and his sister Nina, living in Edmonton and of whom Sandy has frequent telephone conversations with. “Nina was the ninth child born,” said Sandy with that familiar grin that usually proceeded a delightful anecdote. “That’s why we called her Nina, for ninth.” In speaking of his wife Lillian, Sandy’s smile softened as he proudly announced that Sept. 22 this year would have marked their 72nd wedding anniversary. “She passed away 10 years ago so we were married for 62 years.” Not one to lament in sorrow but rather rejoice in the good life his saviour has already blessed him with, Sandy joked. “Lillian told me once, ‘If I die first I want you to wait six months before you meet someone else.’ I looked her straight in the eyes and said, ‘What makes you think I’ll have to wait that long.’” Despite living by himself, Sandy is far from alone. His days are kept busy playing his guitar and singing at the church, visiting churches in town to study their theology and visiting patients at the hospital to bring light to their days. “When I go to the hos-

pital I visit with patients and we talk about spiritual things and I always sing hymns for them.” Sandy lives by his faith and with words of scripture he reflects on the key to his long and happy life. “God says ‘My peace I give unto you not as the world give unto you, let not your heart be troubled and neither let it be afraid.’” Aside from nurturing his spiritual being, Sandy feels it is imperative to take care of his physical being and does so by walking two miles every day. “Now I have taken to walking up and down 170 steps a day too,” he added. Weather permitting Sandy walks mostly in the downtown core, a close distance to the apartment complex where he lives. And no matter what route he takes he picks up garbage and puts it into a plastic bag he totes along in the basket of his walker.

but it was a little runt no bigger than me.” After minutes of unsuccessful attempts to free Sandy from the dumpster another woman passed by, who just happened to know Sandy. “She asked me what I was doing in the dumpster and I said I am doing my best to try and get out of it.” With their help Sandy managed to get free. Happily he was not hurt and the honey, well it made it home to his cupboard. When asked why he feels the need to pick up garbage his response was earnest. “We do get visitors here in Camrose and I don’t want people going home and saying those people in Camrose live in a garbage dump.” His rewards for doing what he does are simple, it makes a difference in the community and can ripple throughout.

Lori Larsen,Camrose Booster A daily walk downtown for 93-year-old Sandy Johnson not only keeps him healthy but keeps our city beautiful.

“The other day, on my walk, I bought a can of honey and stuck it in the bag that I put the garbage in. When I dumped the garbage into the dumpster and it hit the bottom I knew right away what I had done, so I crawled into the dumpster to get my honey. But there was no possible way I could get out of that dumpster.” Any other 93-year-old telling this story might have you believing they were pulling your leg, not Sandy. “I tried every gymnastic move that I could think of,” he laughed, obviously unfazed by the situation he had found himself in. “A car pulled up to the curb so I yelled to the driver to come help me. Of course I was hoping it would be a great big six-footer that would lift me out of there

“The other day I was bending picking up some garbage and a fellow tapped me on the shoulder. I kinda jumped and he said he didn’t mean to scare me but for all he knew I might be picking up some garbage that he threw out, so he gave me a toonie.” A toonie that came in handy later on Sandy’s walk when he went to purchase a couple apples and discovered he had left his wallet at home. On a final note Sandy recalled a famous quote “‘Don’t ask what the country can do for you ask what you can do for the country’ and if we all did that it would make a big difference.” Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? A visit to this 1898-built home, available for educatio nal purpose and viewing pleasure at the Camrose Museum since 1979, is like stepping back in time. The popular and well-app ointed museum is a must-se e in the summer season, celebrating 50 years of operation. The home was built by Thore Grue and his wife and five children housed for five years. Knut Lyseng struck a deal on the home and surrounding land in 1903; however, the dwelling It was in this year that sat empty until 1910. Carl Lyseng (son of Knut) purchased the homeste farming needs. The well-buil ad for his t home featured one room downstairs and one room upstairs for Carl and his wife Ragna. The family made this their home until The upstairs was divided 1969! into bedrooms by curtains. A sunporch was added in 1935 and electricity was finally added in 1950. The move to the grounds of the Camrose Museum , nearly four decades ago, was not the home’s first move. The home was originally built too close to the road allowance and Kurt Lyseng moved it using two bobsleds, each powered by a team of six strong horses. Today, this home stands preserved in time for all to see and admire. It reflects a simple, yet challenging, way of life.

The automotive section of

Coe’s 1970 Cougar set to roar at Round Hill show By Murray Green

Rob Coe of Kingman treasures his new-found 1970 Mercury Cougar. “I picked up this car from a fellow near Hastings Lake about a year ago. I had a 1971 Chevy C10 pickup and I was looking to getting back into a Ford and a car again, so we made a little deal,” explained Rob. “Ever since I was a kid, I thought the old Mustangs were pretty neat. The Mustangs were a little out of reach for me because as they get older they get more expensive. The Cougars were their running mates and they appealed to me as well.” Rob wanted a car that could perform, along with looking good. “The Cougars have a little different personality to them I guess. The Cougars have the hideaway headlights, sequential taillights and little things like that. Things like that drew me to the Cougar,” he confessed. The 1970 models also got an increased gear ratio of 3.25:1. These components gave the car superior handling capabilities over the base Cougar models, but comparable to other muscle cars on the market. “Both the Cougars and Mustangs were like a coupe family car a little bit until they got older, guys started to put wheels and tires on them to turn them into sports cars because they had a nice body shape to them,” he added. “The personality and body lines are attractive and along with a 351 Cleveland engine, it provided lots of power to haul the little car around.” Federally mandated locking steering columns appeared inside in 1970, a new front or nose and taillight bezels updated the look on the outside. The 300 horsepower 351 Cleveland V8 was now available for the first time. Returning to a vertical grille theme, the 1970 Cougar resembled the 1967-68 models, however, the centre grille divider had a more pronounced bulge, which added 2.3 inches to the Cougar’s length. The bodywork, in other respects,

remained essentially unchanged from 1969. The North American automotive manufacturers were introducing muscle cars that were lighter, sleeker and sported larger motors. “The car is completely original. I put the wheels, tires on and a stereo in it, but I still kept the AM radio in it. I put a wood grain steering wheel on and the rest is original,” said Rob. “I wanted to keep it original because I don’t have the dollars and cents to do a frame off restoration. To keep them original, the cars, it means a lot to me. Instead of modifying them, or changing things, I want to keep the old cars on the road and as they were when they first came out.” He uses the car off and on as a daily driver. “I don’t give it a lot of special attention. I want to drive it and enjoy the car as it was intended. I have

three miles of gravel to drive to my acreage outside of Kingman, so it will be muddy when I get home,” he said on a rainy day. “I love going to the car shows and visiting with like-minded people. We talk about each other’s cars and it is a relaxing day for me. You can hang out and remember the past, look at the cars and eat a cheese burger. It has happened to me a dozen times today (car show in Tofield) where someone has come along and said I remember my friend having a car just like that. It is a lot of fun. Just going to shows and meeting new people, I really enjoy it.” He tries to attend shows within 100 kilometres of Kingman and not go too far. “I enjoy the local shows in Camrose, Tofield and Round Hill. I went to Chipman this year as well. You get to know the local guys and it gives you a chance to say hello to them,” said Rob.

He has called Kingman home for the past four years. “I’m an ex-military guy who moved around a lot. I married my wife, who was originally from Kingman, so when I retired in 2010, her dad helped us out

with a piece of property so I brought her back to her home area.” Rob plans on showing his Cougar and attending the Round Hill Harvest Show and Shine on Sunday, September 3.

Joseph ( Joe) Cramer 1931 ~ 2012 The moment that you left me, My heart was split in two. One side was filled with memories, The other side died with you. I often lay awake at night When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down Memory Lane With tears upon my cheek. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day. But missing you is a heartache That never goes away. I hold you tight within my heart, And there you will remain. You see, life has gone on without you, But will never be the same. We will think of you tomorrow, And will our whole lives through, For the day we fail to think of you, Is the day we’ll be with you. Forever loved and missed, Ruth, Carey and Terry, Rose, Dawn and Shawn and grandchildren

Round Hill to hold Harvest Shine By Murray Green

Take your favourite car for a spin to the fifth annual Round Hill Harvest Show and Shine on Sunday, September 3. The Round Hill and District Agricultural Society is hosting its yearly event at the agricultural grounds near the ball diamonds and campground. “The show and shine is open to all pre-’90s vehicles and is in conjunction with our threshing demo. We changed to pre-’90s instead of pre-’80s because it allows vehicles 25 years and older to enter. A vehicle can be registered a classic after 25 years, so it made sense to include ’80s vehicles. We’ve had a lot of requests to include them as well,” said organizer Allen Tomaszewski. “Every year our event is growing. It depends on the weather, but we are hoping for more vehicles this year. I remember that in our first year, I went into Round Hill and couldn’t see Main Street because it was so foggy. I thought it was going to be a wreck, but it cleared off and it turned out to be a great day,” he recalled. Awards are presented in classic, pick-ups, rat rods and muscle car categories. “The show is open and we even take works in progress,” said Allen. “The event brings a lot of people into Round Hill. It begins with a pancake breakfast,” he added. The pancake breakfast starts the day from 9 to 11 a.m. with registration held from 9 a.m. to noon. The car show is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and door prizes will begin at 1:30 p.m. “We will have a binding, threshing and stooking demonstration. We want to show younger people how things were done in the past, and bring back memories for some of the long-time farmers,” he said. “It was so labour intensive and took days compared to the 10 minutes it takes a large combine to do the same space. This is our chance to show them what it was like.” Tomaszewski, when he was 16, was one of the last age groups to harvest with binders and threshing machines. “Both threshing and the classic vehicles are a thing of the past. This is an opportunity to reflect on our history in the area,” said Allen. The threshing demonstration is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. An awards presentation will be held at 3 p.m. and several awards will be presented. For more information on the event contact Allen at 780-672-6104.

Community minded men walked a mile, or more, in an effort to generate awareness about gender relations and sexual violence and raise funds for the Camrose Women’s Shelter. “This year we had 41 walkers and raised about $13,500,” said Camrose Women’s Shelter Society executive director NoraLee Rear. Last year the walk featured 47 walkers and raised approximately $21,000. “The guys who come

out every year are such great examples to other men in the community and inspired some new men to walk this year. “The message is clear and still strong that we need to raise the awareness of the long standing impact of domestic violence on women and children. All funds raised were donated to the Camrose Women’s Shelter. “The board’s goal was to raise funds for Second Stage housing this year,” said Rear. “Which we are aware is going to be a long process to establish in
